Education in RUTHERFORD county County hosts numerous educational opportunities Compiled by Erin Kidd ekidd@thedigitalcourier.com

Rutheford County Schools Rutherford County Schools provides comprehensive educational programs and services to approximately 8,900 students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12 at 19 school sites located throughout the county. The school district is governed by a locally elected, seven-member board of education, with superintendent Dr. Janet H. Mason serving as the school district’s chief administrative officer.  A technology-forward school district focused on preparing all students for success in career and college, Rutherford County Schools launched its Going G.L.O.B.A.L. initiative in 2011 to ensure that all students have access to 21st century technologies in order to overcome barriers to school success and to expand educational opportunities for all students in an increasingly interconnected environment.  All elementary school students enjoy classrooms

equipped with teaching and learning technologies that support communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. Â The school district provides laptop computers to all middle school and high school students for their personal educational use both at school and at home. Â Rutherford County Schools has been twice-recognized as a national Apple Distinguished Program for its innovative use of technology and digital resources to enhance the instructional program. The school district is organized to include one pre-kindergarten program center, ten elementary schools, three middle schools, three comprehensive high schools, one alternative learning center for middle and high school students, and one early college high school on the campus of Isothermal Community College. Â Rutherford Early College High School was recognized during the 2013-14 school year as a National Blue Ribbon School, a prestigious honor awarded to only six public and pri-

vate schools across North Carolina and to only 286 public and private schools across the nation. Â The school district has also been regularly recognized for the quality of its faculty and staff. Â During each

of the past three years, a Rutherford County Schools educator has been recognized as either Teacher of the Year or Principal of the Year SEE page 8

for Region 8, which includes 18 school districts across western North Carolina. Partnership with parents and community members is a central component of Rutherford County Schools’ mission to prepare students for lifelong learning. Working closely with those partners, the school district provides rigorous instruction in North Carolina’s established curriculum standards and offers an array of co- and extra-curricular activities to support each student’s academic, intellectual, social, physical, and emotional development in a safe, nurturing environment focused on success. Additional information about the school district is available on its website at http:// www.rcsnc.org/, and Rutherford County Schools welcomes school visits by parents and community members throughout the year. Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy Building upon the foundation of the Core Knowledge Sequence,

Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy: A Challenge Foundation Academy partners with families to educate students in grades K-12 in the trivium of grammar, logic, and rhetoric, thus graduating thoughtful, articulate young adults who are prepared for college and for a lifetime of citizenship and active intellectual inquiry. TJCA-CFA’s charter and the essay on which it is based (the late Dorothy Sayers’s “Lost Tools of Learning”) emphasize that the trivium is foundational both for further studies and for post-collegiate life. For these reasons, TJCA-CFA requires all high school students to take two years of Latin (with an emphasis on grammar), two years of logic and a year of rhetoric, culminating in a senior rhetoric thesis. Sayers emphasizes that grammar, logic, and rhetoric are stages of learning as well as foundational disciplines. During the grammar stage of learning (kindergarten through early adolescence), teachers provide a rigorous grounding in the “grammar” (or basics) of English, history, mathematics,

science, art and music by using the Core Knowledge developed by E. D. Hirsch. In accord with Sayers’s essay, teachers emphasize observation, memorization, and recitation during the grammar stage. During the dialectic or logic stage (early adolescence), Socratic questioning, logical argumentation and discursive reasoning come to the forefront. Later, during the rhetoric stage (later adolescence), teachers emphasize public speaking, presentations, and a synthesis of the knowledge gained in the various disciplines. Thus, TJCA-CFA’s curriculum is a unified whole in which the grammar stage prepares students for the logic

stage, which in turn prepares students for the rhetoric stage, thus preparing graduates for a lifetime of active intellectual inquiry and citizenship. Throughout the TJCA-CFA curriculum, preference is shown whenever possible for original works -- particularly the great books that have stood the test of time -- over textbook summaries. In addition, TJCA-CFA takes to heart Plato’s observation that the fine arts and athletics play a crucial role in classical education. Lake Lure Classical Academy SEE page 9

Recreation in RUTHERFORD county Adrenaline-pumping fun for everyone By Travis Durkee tdurkee@thedigitalcourier.com

Tucked into the woods just before you get to Lake Lure on US 64/74A is one of Rutherford County’s most exciting places to spend a day. Whether you’re a family looking to make lifetime memories together, a couple ready to try something new or an old-timer looking to feel young again, Canopy Ridge Farm Adventure Park zipline and kayak tours can certainly deliver. After launching in June 2011, Canopy Ridge has grown consistently offering zipline tours through the Blue Ridge Foothills on ziplines that range from 500 feet long to over 1,000 feet long and over 100 feet above the ground. The tours’ longest zipline is affectionately referred to as “Zip Zilla.” Tours can last from 60-90 minutes. For those that prefer to stay a little closer to the ground, Canopy Ridge offers kayak tours on the lower Rock Broad River making for a great trip for children and beginners. The kayak tour offers paddlers a chance to experience gentle flowing water while also bringing them through a few white-water and fast-moving areas. Canopy Ridge owner and operator John Wagner, who also started Lake Lure Adventure Company in 1998, developed Page 16

Canopy Ridge is currently in the process of implementing another adventure to the park for next year, but in the meantime, it’s certainly worth it to spend a sunny Saturday exploring the woods and streams of northwest Rutherford County at Canopy Ridge Farm. “Lake Lure is a beautiful place to spend the day as it is, but to come up and spend the afternoon with your family ziplining, then go to lunch and come back for a kayak trip makes for a great day,” Wagner said. Safety in RUTHERFORD county The men and women who keep us safe By Alyssa Mulliger amulliger@thedigitalcourier.com

In Rutherford County, there is no shortage of hardworking, dedicated public safety personnel who spend endless hours serving the citizens of the community. These men and women include law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency medical staff. Public safety departments across the county participate in a variety of programs to help fight crime and assist citizens of all ages. To aid senior citizens and/or the disabled, the

R.U.O.K. (Are You Okay) program utilizes a computerized phone system to make daily calls to designated residences to check on occupants, ensuring they are okay. Project Lifesaver is designed to assist public safety personnel in tracking and locating Alzheimer’s patients, autistic children or individuals with a brain injury that tend to wander. To assist children, school resource officers protect the rights and safety of all students and school personnel and teach D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) and G.R.E.A.T.

The goal of G.R.E.A.T. is to prevent youth violence by teaching children how to control anger and make positive decisions. Meanwhile, the interdiction team detects, apprehends and prosecutes persons involved in the use, transportation and trafficking of controlled substances and other criminal activities on Rutherford County highways. Two permanent medicine drop boxes are located in the lobbies of the Sheriff ’s Office (198 North Washington Street in Rutherfordton) and Forest City Police Department (187 South Church Street), where citizens can safely dispose of expired and unwanted prescriptions and over-the-counter medications. Annual Operation Medicine Drop events also help citizens clean out their medicine cabinets to keep drugs from being misused or abused with potentially deadly consequences. Public safety personnel also help ensure the well-being of citizens traveling on county roads including Interstates, major highways and two-lane streets by coordinating frequent multi-agency driving while impaired (DWI) and license checkpoints. Additionally, local law enforcement agencies participate in statewide enforcement campaigns like “Booze It & Lose It,” “No Need 2 Speed” and “Click It or Ticket.” To reduce crime through an expanded and stronger relationship between the community, police and media, citizens www.thedigitalcourier.com

Housing in RUTHERFORD county County offers diversity in housing selections By Jean Gordon jgordon@thedigitalcourier.com

The housing situation in Rutherford County is as diverse as its people. From multi-million dollar homes overlooking Lake Lure to the furthest end of the spectrum. One in every 10 homes in Rutherford County is identified as being in “poor” or “not liveable” conditions, valued at $5,000 or less. Off Spindale Street in Spindale where a trailer park was once located, small one to two bed-

• • • • •

room homes are being built on the metal frames where the trailers were. The developer of the homes has been in the process of renovating several homes in the Town of Spindale. Timber Ridge, off Railraod Road in Spindale, is the county’s newest apartment complex, geared specifically for seniors over 55 years old. It is a State Tax Credit Project. The corner of West and Railroad Avenue, also in Spindale, will be the location of another State Tax Credit Project, “Sterling Oaks” that will serve single

families and will include two story units. There will be 50 to 60 units constructed for families. How is the housing market? “The real estate market in Rutherford County in my opinion is better than last year, so that is encouraging to sellers,” said Judy Oates, Washburn Realty in Rutherfordton. “Most houses have a much better chance of selling when they are priced at $150,000 and below,” Oates said. “It seems that is the magic cut off for most

buyers. The market has had a lot of foreclosures hit us. Although some of them are good buys, they take so long to come to fruition that a lot of buyers get tired of the wait. I think the wait time has gotten better over the last year.” Oates said there are a lot of folks looking for retirement homes but aren’t ready to make the jump. “They like to scout out different areas. It usually takes most buyers a year or more to make a commitment,” Oates SEE page 37

said. “The over $300,000 market, which we have a good inventory of, has a much more difficult time of getting to the closing table. The job market here is not conducive to buyers making a decision on a more expensive house as we have seen in other years. It has to be really special. Most of them have acreage or they are or on the lake in Lake Lure or Lake Adger.” What about Substandard Housing? “I recently rode through the

Habitat for Humanity: Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) is the result of a vision of a county resident, the late Mrs. David Lindsey, who saw the need for housing for low income citizens of Rutherford County. She provided the funds and enlisted help to get the local affiliate started in 1987. Twenty-seven years later, Habitat’s mission remains the same-to eliminate substandard housing and to build safe, decent and affordable housing for low-to-moderate income families in Rutherford County. In 2013, the group completed its 71st home and by the end of 2014 at least two more houses will be complete. SEE page 39

This subdivision, which will take several years to complete, is where 17 Habitat houses will stand. Currently, seven of those houses have been completed. They fully expected him to say something to the effect of, “Well, we’ll have to try another day when we get some REAL help.â€? Nope. He said, “Let’s get to workâ€? without giving a second thought to the fact that they were women who had no clue what to do. The three enjoyed the experience so much they talked their friends into volunteering to replace an entire roof – under the direction of the guy now affectionately called “Bossman Billy.â€? — Rev. Getting around in RUTHERFORD county Transit gives residents a way around county By Kerry Giles Transportation Director

The purpose of Rutherford County Transit is to provide efficient and effective utilization of all available resources in the provision of safe, convenient, and reliable transportation services, and to facilitate mobility choices for all individuals including the elderly, disabled, and clients of Human Service Agencies. Rutherford County Transit is a county run organization that services the citizens of Rutherford County. With 24 drivers and an office staff of six, the employees at Transit love helping the citizens of Rutherford County. Transit never wants transportation to be a barrier to living independently. To schedule an appointment or determine eligibility, residents can call (828) 287-6141 for more information. Once an appointment is scheduled, a passenger will receive a call the night before their trip with a pick up time and then are called again on the day of their trip approximately 20 minutes before the vehicle arrives. Transit services citizens through several different programs. Medicaid transportation is available but passengers must first be approved for Medicaid Transportation through the Department of Social Services at (828) 288-4022. Once approved Page 40

through DSS, appointments can be made through the Appointment Line at (828) 287-6141. If an attendant is required, a Medical Necessity Verification Form must be filled out at DSS. Medicaid transportation is only available for medical appointments. Employment transportation is also available through limited funds to help clients get to work or Isothermal Community College for training. An application must be filled out. Cost of trips is based on frequency and total distance. Transit has grant funds

through NCDOT that are available to transport individuals over the age of 60 or who have a disability. An application must be filled out and if they are disabled, a doctor must sign the application. Currently, applicants are allowed three trips per month for free under this service. The number of trips per month is subject to change based on program funding. The application is available at www. drivingpossibilities.com or one can be mailed to an individual upon request. Service for the general public is provided through Transit’s

2014/2015 Everything Rutherford

Deviated Fixed Route which runs in Rutherfordton, Spindale and Forest City, on a set schedule. The route operates from 8 am. — 5:45 p.m. A list of set times and locations can be mailed upon request or found at www.drivingpossibilities. The fare is only $1 to ride. Deviations can be made up to a half mile from a set bus stop. Stops may also be made along the route as long as it is a safe location for the bus to stop. Deviations will not be allowed that require the bus to back up. SEE page 41

Getting around in RUTHERFORD county FROM page 40

Please call (828) 288-1830 if you need to request a deviation. Monthly passes are $32. The Senior Center and Rutherford Life Services also contract with Transit for daily transportation of their patrons. Also Transit vehicles are handicap accessible and can load and unload an individual in a wheelchair. Transit does approximately 250 trips a day and around 55,000 a year. They also drive over 500,000 miles a year. There are 30 employees, 24 of which are drivers. Transit also utilizes 28 vehicles to maintain the demand for services. Transit is open Monday-Friday from 6:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., however some accommodations are made for early dialysis appointments or for those who get off work at 5 p.m. Most of the trips are in county to doctor’s appointments or grocery stores. Transit has an out of county schedule where all appointments must be made

between 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. They go to Shelby, Asheville, Hendersonville, Columbus, Charlotte, Gastonia, Mooresville, Kings Mountain, Spartanburg, Hickory, Morganton, Winston-Salem, Durham and Chapel Hill. While Transit is a county run department they do not use any county funds. Transit receives funding from the North Carolina Department of Transportation for administrative and capital expenditures. All other expenses are covered by revenues that are collected. The Transit Advisory Board also oversees operations. They meet quarterly and members include representatives from: DSS/Medicaid, Veterans, County Manager, Regional Transportation State Rep, United Way, Employment Security, Dialysis, American Cancer Society, Health Department, Rutherford Life Services, Senior Center and Workforce Development. Safety is a critical component to operations. Safety is en-

forced through monthly safety meetings, vehicle drills, pre trip checklists, supervisor ridealongs, and the entire staff is certified in CPR and first aid. Transit’s goal is to give back to Rutherford County. The employ-

ees are natural care givers and enjoy their job tremendously. Please call Transit at 828-2876141 to see if they can help you or find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/rutherfordcountytransit.

Retirement in RUTHERFORD county Opportunities for enjoying the golden years By Alyssa Mulliger amulliger@thedigitalcourier.com

Retirement can be one of the most rewarding times of life. In Rutherford County, several sites provide opportunities for senior adults to help them maintain and enhance their quality of life during their golden years. At the Rutherford County Department of Aging/Senior Center on Callahan Koon Road in Spindale, director Angela Ezell and staff strive to offer free programs and services that will best meet the needs of aging adults in Rutherford County, regardless of economic status, race, creed, education or other circumstances. The Senior Center is a North Carolina Certified Center of Excellence and a United Way member agency, and anyone 55 or older can become involved in the plethora of activities at the center. When attempting to tone up or lose weight, finding exercise

that is fun, easy and modifiable for different fitness levels is crucial to a person’s success. Programs at the center that encourage seniors to “use it or lose it” include Zumba and SilverStriders. Zumba combines fun dance moves and upbeat music, and some people even say they do not feel like they are exercising when participating. Instructor Wavolyn Norville teaches Zumba on select Mondays at the Senior Center and is a pro at showing modifications to each movement so no matter what a person’s fitness level, he or she can achieve a maximum workout. Also offering a wealth of benefits is SilverStriders, a national award-winning running and walking club for people 50 years of age and better. The mission of SilverStriders is to promote the practice of health, physical fitness and personal achievement

through running and walking in the community. Seniors have a myriad of ways to exercise their minds at

the Rutherford County Senior Center through programs like SEE page 46

Pen Pals, the writing club and the book club. By joining fellow pen pals to write to Spindale Elementary School students, seniors are able to make a difference in the life of a child by caring and sharing their wisdom. The writing club, led by Linda Tomblin, meets twice a month and writers are given pointers to help enhance their writing and an opportunity to share with the group. For seniors who love to read, the book club is a great place to get started. There is not a required book list so participants choose what they want to

read. Both the writing and book clubs are ongoing and participants can join at any time. Other programs and services the Senior Center features are Meals on Wheels, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, Box Tops for Education, Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), blood pressure checks, diabetes testing, meet and eat dinner clubs, shopping excursions, crafting classes, quilting sessions, recipe club, special speakers from the surrounding community, monthly birthday recognitions and special holiday celebrations. In addition to the many varied

activities scheduled throughout each month at the Senior Center, daily drop-in events always available for participants to enjoy include billiards, board games, Bocce ball, horseshoes, table tennis, shuffleboard, walking trails, playing cards, word puzzles, newspaper and magazines, coupon room, computer lab and library, chair fitness videos, exercise equipment, television shows and friendly conversation. The majority of activities available at the Rutherford County Senior Center are also offered at satellite sites in Ellenboro, Henrietta and Shingle Hollow.

One large annual event for senior adults at the Rutherford County site is the Scam Jam, where members of the community are educated and reminded about ways to protect themselves against scams, fraud and con artists. According to Attorney General Roy Cooper’s office, seniors are hit by scammers harder and more often than other consumers. Scam Jam attendees are provided materials explaining various scamming techniques being used against North Carolinians, including identity theft, SEE page 47

telephone and telemarketing fraud, sweepstakes and charity scams, predatory lending practices, investment fraud, deceptive business practices, health care scams and door-to-door home repair fraud. While most of these scams are used against consumers of all ages, many of them target seniors. Another significant annual event held by the Senior Center is the Senior Games. Every year senior adults have the opportunity to exercise both their minds and bodies while engaging in some friendly competition.

Over the course of three weeks, seniors participate in various art and sporting events. Art events are spread across four categories (heritage, literary, performing and visual), while sporting events include everything from archery to swimming. The games kick off during an opening ceremony with the lighting of the official torch and conclude with an award ceremony and gala. The games are sponsored by numerous individuals and businesses who contribute donations and provide their facilities, helping to grow the event each year.

While some Rutherford retirees may prefer lives of leisure, for those searching for learning and fun, there are endless opportunities throughout the county. Its first public project was a production of the musical “Camelot,” which involved over 700 people in bringing it to the stage. This first presentation set the

precedent of utilizing large musical theatre productions as a primary means of involving and training large numbers of participants while seeking artistic excellence in the final result. In the following years, a variety of programs were created in all major art forms and thousands of county citizens took part in these programs, both young people and adults. For the past four and a half years, the Arts Council and Rutherford County Schools have collaborated on a program called “Playing For Keeps,” which has provided after school tutoring, homework assistance and enrichment programming. Most recent productions were “The Golden Goose” and the “Shakespeare Sampler.” Upcoming productions include “Medieval Plays From the Bible,” a Greek comedy named “The Cyclpos,” as well as a large summer musical and various other events throughout the

Faith in RUTHERFORD county Rutherford County is rich in places of worship By Jean Gordon jgordon@thedigitalcourier.com

From the church in the valley by the wildwood to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on West Main Street in Forest City with its magnificent murals, the faith community in Rutherford County has many places of worship with diverse services. Members gather on Sunday for worship and they also gather on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and other days of the week. There is a church building on nearly every corner of the county with numerous denominations or non-denominational congregations gathering to worship. There are places of worship for all races, ethnic groups, the non-hearing, the handicapped and those who may have lost their way in a traditional setting. Gathering for worship on Sunday at a traditional Baptist church generally means worship service between 10 and 11 a.m. with Sunday School before the worship service. “Rutherford County is blessed with so many wonderful churches,” said Dr. Bobby Gantt, pastor of Florence Baptist Church. “Walk through most any church door and be spiritually fed and experience wonderful Christian fellowship. “But my fear is that Rutherwww.thedigitalcourier.com

ford County mirrors society in general in that we are spiritual beings made by the Almighty God and redeemed by the Lord Jesus Christ, but we are less and less church people.” Gantt said of the spiritual climate of Rutherford County. “My daily prayer is that we will experience spiritual renewal in our souls and part of this renewal will be renewed excitement and enthusiasm about the church, in short that we will take advantage of what God has placed right at our finger tips. What if all of us simply observed the Lord’s Day by attending church on Sunday? Many, if not most, of our problems will be solved.” For some churches such as Florence Baptist Church on South Broadway Street in Forest City, there is a contemporary service on Sunday at 8:45 a.m. in the church’s Life Enrichment Center where over 450 people gather for praise and worship songs and the pastor’s sermon. A praise team leads the service before the pastor delivers the morning message at 9 a.m. At 11 a.m., the church worships in a more traditional fashion with hymn book singing, a sermon, special music by the choirs and the pastor’s sermon. More than 450 attend the 11 a.m. service.

As the church continued to grow a few years ago, there was the decision to offer two services at two different times. Other churches have gone to two services, giving members a choice between contemporary or traditional and a choice between early church or late church. The Biker Church, located at 156 U.S. 74B just outside the city limits of Forest City, has its Sunday service at 11 a.m.

“We start gathering, hanging out and drinking coffee at about 10:30 a.m.” said pastor Chris Bucy. There are 25 to 30 people who attend the church with a small majority being bikers. “We started out as a biker church as a mission as far as our outreach,” Bucy said. “But now there are others from all different walks of life and probably five bikers.” He said people who attend

have no interest in traditional church service, but wanted a place to worship. “It’s a resting spot for broken and thrown-away people,” he said. The group also conducts a Bible Study on Thursday night, which is how the church really started — a Thursday night Bible study in the home of Smokey McCurry, who is also a founder of the church. There are more Southern

Baptist churches than any other denomination in the county. In the Sandy Mush Baptist Association there are 62 churches and the Green River Baptist Association has 32 churches. Membership ranges from 1,300 to under 30 or 40 at some of the Baptist churches. The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church has 284 families in its congregation and the church meets several different SEE page 57

times during the week for mass. There is a Deaf Chapel for the hearing impaired congregation at West Memorial near Rutherfordton. In addition to the 11 a.m. worship service, there is also a deaf ministry for those attending Sunday School and other events. A Spanish speaking church, Iglesia Bautista Christo Vive, on Oakland Road in Spindale began several years ago in a Henrietta facility and as it continued to grow, the church built the new facility. The Church of the Exceptional on U.S. Highway 221A in Henrietta, that was organized 40 years ago, opens its door to the handicapped. Very early on Sunday morning, volunteers begin driving transport vans across the county to bring the members to church. Some churches have become more involved in providing food for the community, including the Welcome Table at the First

United Methodist in Rutherfordton where each Monday night people come into the fellowship hall, sit down and have a hot meal. There are also food pantries and food kitchens in some locations. Churches do not always meet in a traditional facility. The Biker Church meets in a warehouse building, Element Church meets in the former Alexander Elementary School and other churches have erected large metal facilities. The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses has a new facility off Birch Hutchins Road near Forest City and the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints meets in a traditional church building off Mt. Pleasant Church Road in Forest City. Other denominations include Presbyterian, Methodist, Lutheran, United Methodist, Apostolics, Bible Tabernacle and Seventh Day Adventist; And the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Forest City Foursquare

Church, Grace Bible Church, the Bible Independent, Assembly of God, African Methodist Episcopal Zion, African Methodist Episcopal, Assembly of Gold, Contemporary, Bible Independent, Church of the Brethern, Restoration Charimsatic Church of Christ; Church of God Congregational Holiness, Episcopal, Presbyterian, Church of the Brethern,

Full Gospel, Holiness. The Village Chapel in Forest City got its origin more than 50 years ago as a church to serve the men of the community who had become addicted to alcohol or lost their ways. Interdenominational churches include Full Gospel, Holiness, Nazarene and Missionary Methodist. SEE page 58

Community churches include The Element Church, Father’s Vineyard and Cornerstone. Non-denominational churches include the Church of the Exceptional, Grace Convenant Church, Jesus Way Christian Ministries, Pleasant View Community Church, Village Chapel and Zion Hill Faith Temple. There’s the Temple of Jesus and the Fairfield Mountains Chapel that serve the resort community of Fairfield Mountains/Rumbling Bald. Each summer student missionaries conduct services at

campgrounds and recreational facilities in Lake Lure and Chimney Rock to minister to tourists who visit Rutherford County. Among the newest Baptist church to become organized is The True Word Baptist Church. It meets at the Sandy Run Baptist Association Building on Puzzle Creek Road in Bostic. Bible Study is every Thursday at 6 p.m. and Sunday morning at 11 a.m. For anyone interested in gathering together for worship, the walk or drive to church is just around the corner and the types of worship are plentiful.

Sports in RUTHERFORD county Everyone loves the Owls By Travis Durkee tdurkee@thedigitalcourier.com

Since 2008, Forest City Owls baseball has offered a team that everyone in Rutherford County can rally behind regardless of high school affiliations, or Duke vs. Carolina preference. Forest City’s local Coastal Plain League (CPL) team has embedded itself into the landscape of Rutherford County and serves as the focal point of the county’s social and sporting world every summer. The Owls, formerly known as the Spartanburg Stingers, began their move to Forest City in 2007 when owner Ken Silver chose the town as the new home for his team. Forest City, thanks in large part to a $1.5 million gift from Houston Texans owner and Rutherford County native Robert McNair, built McNair Field on the grounds of the American Legion Field next to Cool Springs Administration Building. “I worked closely with the council on a plan to bring the team to Forest City and they built a stadium that’s second-tonone,” Silver said. The team held a contest in the summer of 2007 to rename with www.thedigitalcourier.com

the overwhelming number of votes favoring the Owls name, a name affiliated with numerous minor league and independent Forest City baseball teams dating back to 1936. With the buzz of a new ball club and the sight of a stateof-the-art stadium in Forest City, the Owls took off in both popularity and the win column. “The anticipation of the team coming to Forest City was off the charts,” Silver said. “Season tickets were being sold faster than we could print them and it’s been a very popular pastime for everybody.” In just its second season, the team finished 51-9 and captured it’s first of back-to-back Petitt Cups. In the 2009 season, Forest City’s 22–2 start, 24 first-half

victories, 25 wins at home and 46 regular-season wins were all CPL records. The Owls were also voted as the No. 1 collegiate

“What happened was that the recruiting became almost easy because of the stadium and the support,” Silver said. The players in uniform weren’t the only ones getting national attention as the grounds crew got in the act when McNair Field was named one of the county’s best baseball fields by the Sports Turf Management Association, a non-profit professional association of grounds keepers. Local baseball fans flock to the stadium during the summer months to watch college kids from across the country compete while the more casual fans can come out and enjoy social time with fresh concessions and cold (sometimes adult) beverages. “The team has become a real focal point,” Silver said. “When you talk to people about what they’re doing over the summer the Owls always come into that conversation.” McNair Field and the Owls

have played hosts to Team Japan, Team USA and will host the Chinese Taipei Amateur National Team in July 2014. And for Silver, who also owns the Gastonia Grizzlies, either he or his wife are in attendance for every Owls home game alongside thousands of loyal Rutherford County fans. “It’s been great for the team to get the support they get,” Silver said. “It makes recruiting a lot easier for us. We just ask kids to come to a community that offers a tremendous fan base and a stadium that’s just outstanding.”

Getting utilities in Rutherford County

Essential utilities are available throughout Rutherford County and are competitively priced for small business, and for high-volume commercial and industrial users. In addition, Rutherford County currently has excess capacity in both current water and sewer treatment, with both designed to be expandable to meet the needs of a growing industrial base. Electricity: Depending on the location, Duke Energy Corporation, Rutherford Electric Membership Corporation and the Town of Forest City supply

electricity to area residents and businesses. All have solid reputations for quality and dependable service. Costs fluctuate with demand and location, however in 2006, industrial customers paid an average of 4 cents to 7 cents/KWH, well below national averages. Gas: Public Service of North Carolina (PSNC) provides natural gas to the area at or below the national average cost. Prices for this utility are negotiated with PSNC depending on a variety of factors.

Water & Sewer: Water is a plentiful natural resource in the area. With access to the Broad River and several natural and manmade reservoirs, as well as ample storage, the area’s water and sewer systems are designed to meet growing demand. Depending on the location, water is provided to businesses and residents from one of three providers: the Broad River Water Authority; the Town of Forest City; the Town of Lake Lure; or Chimney Rock Village. Sewer providers include the towns of Forest City, Spindale, Rutherfordton and Lake Lure. Capacities in each

area vary and are designed to be expandable. Telecommunications/ Broadband: Telecommunications services in the area are provided by AT&T, which provides telephone and fiber optic services. Facilities include major digital switching equipment and high-speed digital access. Cellular providers include AT&T, US Cellular and Verizon Wireless. Additional broadband services are also provided by the Pangaea Fiber Network.
