Left untreated, urinary tract infection can cause permanent damage
Dr. Grover Little
Painful urination, urinar y frequency with little output and urine that is cloudy or smells bad may mean you are suffering from a urinar y tract infection, an infection that many adults will experience at some point in their lives. Urinar y tract infections occur when germs get into your
system through your urethra, the tube that carries urine from your bladder to the outside of your body. Urinar y tract infections, or UTIs, are more common in women because they have shorter urethras, making it easier for germs to move into their bladders. The germs that typically cause a
UTI live in your large intestine and are found in your stool. Most urinar y tract infections are bladder infections, which is usually not serious if treated right away. Left untreated, it can spread to your kidneys; a kidney infection is serious and can cause permanent damage. More serious signs of infection are fever and chills and nausea and vomiting. UTIs are diagnosed from a urine sample to check for germs, and are treated with antibiotics. These infections can be
prevented by drinking lots of water and other fluids each day and urinating when you feel like you have to, and by completely emptying your bladder each time. UTIs are more likely if you do not drink enough fluids, you have diabetes or you are pregnant. The chance that you will get a bladder infection is higher if you have any problem that blocks the flow of urine from your bladder, such as having kidney stones or an enlarged prostate gland. Locally, Dr. Glover Little is an expert on urinary health. He is accepting patients and can be contacted by calling Rutherford Urology at 828-287-7332 or learn more at MyRutherfordRegional. com/Urology.
Painless lump could be a sign of a hernia A lump in the abdomen could be a hernia. Hernias can cause soft, small and painless lumps or lumps that are a little painful and swollen. As much as 10 percent of the population develops some type of hernia during life. Locally, the board certified surgeons at Rutherford Surgical Associates in Rutherfordton are experts in treating hernias that require surgery. A hernia occurs when the contents of a body cavity bulge out of where they are normally located. Usually these contents are portions of intestine or abdominal fatty tissue, and enclosed in the thin membrane that naturally lines the inside of the cavity. Abdominal hernias can be
present at birth, but others develop later in life. Any condition that increases pressure in the abdominal cavity may create or worsen a hernia, including obesity, heavy lifting, coughing, straining,
chronic lung disease and fluid in the abdominal cavity. Those with a family history of hernias may also be more at risk of developing a hernia. The signs and symptoms of hernias can include a painless lump to severely tender, painful swollen protrusion of tissue that you are unable to push back into the abdomen. Hernias by themselves may see services/page 2
