Hot Nights kicks off full season

By MATTHEW CLARK mclark@thedigitalcourier.com

OREST CITY — The annual Hot Nights Cool Rides car show is more than just a downtown car show, it’s an event used to set the tone for the rest of the events in downtown Forest City. After Hot Nights Cool Rides, Forest City has events regularly through the Christmas season. “It really is because this is the first event and we have Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas,” said Kelly Dale, president of the Forest City Merchants Association. “So this is definitely the start of the season for us.”

For All You Need To Know About

But, this weekend’s event spurs much more than interest for other events through the rest of the year. “A lot of people ask if we make tons of money on the car show but we don’t,” Dale said. “The money we do make goes to funding things like the Christmas parade and donations at the end of the year to civic organizations. “We strive to do well at the car show because it does help us have a good rest of the season and let the people of Forest City enjoy our efforts from the car

Baxter to show off 1954 Ford 150

By JEAN GORDON

jgordon@thedigitalcourier.com

OREST CITY — Derrick Baxter is proud of his 1954 Ford 150 and is ready to show it off again August 16 at the 23rd annual Hot Nights Cool Rides car show in Forest City. His Ford 150 is a trophy winner. Last year the Forest City Merchants Association voted the truck, "Merchant's Choice" and it is on the event T-shirt this year. "This is pretty exciting," Baxter said. "I will wear one of those Tshirts with pride. Baxter bought the truck 20 years ago from Lee Black, of Forest City, and later begin to refurbish the truck.

"It took about five years to fix it up," Baxter said. He said he paid $500 for the truck "I'd sell it for $4,500,” he said. Taking part in shows like Hot Nights Cool Rides is a treat for Baxter. "I love coming to the car show," he said."I love it because you can just sit out there and talk with friends, maybe you've never seen before. They talk to you about your truck. "Sitting beside my truck in my easy chair at the car show is what I like to do.” When he isn't driving a truck to Atlanta, Ga. every day, Baxter can be found inside his work shed, restoring two other Ford trucks — up and coming trophy winners, too.

Jean Gordon/The Daily Courier Derrick Baxter is proud of his Ford 150. He paid $500 for it about 20 years ago. It's a trophy winner and he will show it at the Hot Nights Cool Rides car show in Forest City.

Deviney's Road King featured on event T-shirt

By JEAN GORDON

UTHERFORDTON — Doug Deviney's 2004 Harley Davidson Road King is about to become even more famous. The motorcycle is featured on the 2014 Hot Nights Cool Rides T-shirt that will be available for sale at the 23rd annual car show in downtown Forest City. Deviney's motorcycle received the Merchant's Choice Award at the 2013 Hot Nights Cool Rides event. Deviney built the motorcycle at his shop, Vindictive Wayz in Rutherfordton, off Railroad Avenue in Rutherfordton jut a few years ago. After working in construction for

much of his life, Deviney said he was tired of traveling so he opened the motorcycle shop at North American Autos. "I've done a lot of stuff to the motorcycle since the car show last year," Deviney said. In addition to adding a $1,000 audio system, he changed the front end of the bright red motorcycle and also repainted the motorcycle. The artistic work on the motorcycle is the same. "This is pretty cool," Deviney said of the motorcycle being on T-shirt. "Especially right here at home." He enters the motorcycle in numerous shows in the state and region. "I just enjoy this," Deviney said.

Music fit for a car show By ERIN KIDD

ekidd@thedigitalcourier.com

OREST CITY— The music will be flowing during the 23rd Annual Hot Nights Cool Rides car show on Saturday, Aug. 16. The event will feature some local staples and a very talented meteorologist. Bands include Jack Roper and the Weatherman Band, Rocky Yelton and the Hired Guns and The Night Moves Band. "I think the music is going to add to the event. It provides a soundtrack to people walking and looking at cars from different eras," Amy Bridges, Forest City town planner, said. "All three of these bands will provide a good soundtrack to what we are promoting here in Forest City; a fun, family event."

Kelly Dale, president of the Forest City Merchants Association, said the bands will start at 11 a.m. with Jack Roper and the Weatherman Band. From Page 3 show.” This, the 23rd year of the event, will feature new components aside from the car show. Dale said more food vendors on Main Street will be spread out beyond the normal confines of the food court. “People will be able to stop just about anywhere to get something to eat,” Dale said. The event is also partnering with the Rutherford County Farmers Market and bringing tractors into the fray. Dale said tractors will line up along De-

pot Street leading to the farmers market, which will be open until 1 p.m. Saturday. “We really wanted to have a lead into the Farmers Market because they will be open early in the morning,” Dale said. New bands and classes to be judged also highlight this year’s event. For Dale, however, this will be her last as president of the Forest City Merchant’s Association as she plans to step down at the end of the year. However, she said that doesn’t mean an end to her involvement in things like Hot Nights Cool Rides.

“As far as working the car show, I hope this is not my last,” Dale said. “It is still very rewarding to see the day of all the hard work come.” And, it’s that hard work that is more behind the scenes on the day of the event. “We are fortunate to have the Marine Corps League here in Forest City because they really help the day of,” Dale said. “It takes a battalion to really put this on the day of.” Hot Nights Cool Rides begins at 9 a.m. and continues until 8 p.m. Saturday.

Among Ellenburg's body of work is also a 1924 Star truck, which he transformed into what he calls his "moonshine truck." his Nova at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte and entered his vehicles in countless

car shows throughout the region, from Tennessee to Georgia. Expectedly, Ellenburg

has earned many accolades ranging from Best Interior to Best in Show. "I've won at least 100 awards with the Nova, money too," he said. Ellenburg parks his Nova and Ranger in a garage surrounded by trophy-lined walls. One of the most unique awards on display is an 85-pound handmade trophy that Ellenburg won for his moonshine truck. And if the honors were not enough, for Ellenburg the icing on the cake is having his vehicles featured in national automobile magazines. The Nova appeared in the April 2013 edition of

"Crusin' Style Magazine" and the moonshine truck in the July 2014 edition. The magazine features articles on classic car restoration, hot rods, performance cars, muscle cars, street rods, car shows and cruise nights. For his most recent project, Ellenburg is fixing up a 1937 Plymouth truck. "I found it on the other side of Charlotte and began working on it in February this year," he said. Ellenburg hopes the restored truck will be completed by the middle of next year and in time for Hot Nights Cool Rides 2015.

The band has played at the car show before and Yelton is looking forward to performing close to home. "We do a lot of running up and down the road and it's nice every now and then to do one at home," Yelton said. "The car show thing is right up my alley because that's what I do, I work on cars during the week." Yelton said he has brought his own classic car to the show in the past. "It's [the car show]'s awesome. All of the people are in front of the stage and in the street dancing," Yelton said. "I like being in that atmosphere." The Night Move Band will round out the day from 6-8 p.m.

Members are Phil Witherspoon, Mike Miller, Ron Skinner, Larry Arndt, Alan Knight and Jeryl "Spanky" Smith. They have performed at the car show for 16 years. "We get them to do the car show every year because they have such a good following," Dale said. "They are a regional favorite and they play beach music. People love it." Phil Witherspoon, manager of the band, said they will also be performing at the Lake Lure Dirty Dancing Festival that day before they head to Forest City. The group is based out of Hickory and Witherspoon said they love coming to the Forest City area every year. "It's a great event. There are a lot of classic cars, friendly people and a good atmosphere," Witherspoon said. "I just enjoy coming back up to Forest City."
