University librarian aids after hurricane BY SAMANTHA BOYLE STAFF WRITER

Even though Hurricane Maria hit only four months ago, University library worker Miriam Centeno is already preparing for the next natural disaster. Centeno is the collections care coordinator for the University library and traveled to Puerto Rico two weeks ago to assist with the preservation of books and libraries in the event of future natural disasters. According to The Kaiser Family Foundation, the hurricane is known to have killed 55 people, though the total number is thought to be higher. KFF concluded that the hurricane worsened the public health and economic issues that Puerto Rico was already facing. However, the issues Centeno focuses on are Puerto Rico’s libraries and the culture. Centeno’s knowledge and experience of book preservation made her qualified for teaching preservation, said Jessica Unger, emergency programs coordinator for the American Institute for Conservation. “I take care of books, and I take care of the environment in which they are stored,” Centeno said.

Accused kidnapper’s lawyers file motions BY KARAN ABROL STAFF WRITER

Attorneys of accused kidnapper Brendt Christensen, former University physics student, filed 12 pretrial motions totaling 663 pages on Monday. These include one to change the trial venue to northern Illinois and another to drop the main charge of kidnapping resulting in the death of Yingying Zhang, a visiting Chinese scholar. For the motion to drop the main charge of kidnapping resulting in death, the lawyers presented two arguments.

The first is that, according to Christensen’s lawyers, prosecutors lack evidence Zhang was coerced or forced into his car. Christensen’s attorneys argue the evidence does not suggest he seized, abducted or carried Zhang away without her consent. “This leaves the government with having to show that Mr. Christensen enticed Ms. Zhang into his car through false pretense,” they wrote. They also claimed the federal prosecutors don’t have jurisdiction and the SEE TRIAL | 3A

ISG elects new chief of staff BY CORI LIPPERT STAFF WRITER

The Illinois Student Government will go into the semester with a new chief of staff, Susan Zhou. Zhou, freshman in LAS, wrote in an email that she was interested in advocating for students’ issues and joined ISG when she discovered the organization on Quad Day. “I ran for the position of Chief of Staff because I felt that I was fully qualified after a semester spent being the deputy Chief of Staff and learning all about the functions of ISG,” Zhou wrote in an email. “Additionally, I felt that I could make a positive impact both in ISG and on campus.” Zhou wrote she would like to see more member involvement in ISG and would like to develop lasting connections between members that will help the organization run smoothly. “The purpose of the Chief of Staff is to ensure that the government, and all of its branches (i.e. committees, subcommittees, events, etc.) are being run smoothly and in an efficient way,” wrote Joseph Domanski, senior in LAS

and student body vice president, in an email. The chief of staff serves the length of the administration, so the position changes yearly, Domanski wrote. “I think Susan will do a fantastic job,” Domanski wrote. “She is a strong and smart woman. Her drive and willingness to work is unmatched. I know she is only a freshman, but she works like a graduate student and is as smart as a professor.” Andrianna Kurzenberger, senior in LAS and ISG senator, wrote in an email that Zhou’s work ethic and drive really resonated with her, and she is excited to see what Zhou will do as she gains more experience as a student government leader. The chief of staff is chosen by the executive members and voted on by the senate. Zhou was the obvious choice and impressed all of the senators, so there were no reservations about confirming her, Kurzenberger wrote. “Susan was an extremely hardworking person from when she started with ISG,” wrote Patricia SEE ISG | 3A
