Our community’s top picks in food, entertainment and campus life

The DI · Wednesday, November 3, 2021

EDITOR’S NOTE CAROLINA GARIBAY It is my honor to introduce the “Best of CU” publication, one of buzz’s most highly anticipated guides, both from the buzz staff and from the Champaign-Urbana community. Each fall, the C-U community votes on the best of the best in the area, from local restaurants, campus favorites and unique spots. The buzz staff then highlights the winners in our “Best of CU” publication and shares the results with the community. In the past, many winners have even posted their “Best of CU” plaque in their stores to express the pride they feel being recognized so highly by the community. We spent the past couple of weeks tallying up the votes and writing about the incredible winners, and we are so appreciate of the community’s participation and enthusiasm for this guide. This year’s has been a big one for buzz, full of both exciting changes and beloved traditions. We’ve combined newness with tradition in this year’s “Best of CU” by cutting down the

categories to 30 and swapping out some old categories with new ones that capture the ever changing nature and development of the C-U community. We hope these new categories were exciting for the community to vote on and provided a sense of freshness to what has been a buzz tradition for so long. As in year’s past, we’ve also included Editors’ Picks in this year’s “Best of CU, which you can find at the end of the guide. This year, the buzz editorial staff wrote about the Best Underrated Spots on Campus, so be sure to check that out once you’ve gotten through the rest of the categories. We’re also very excited to include special editorial selections from The Daily Illini editorial board about some of our favorite spots to read The DI. I’ve had the pleasure to participate in four “Best of CU” publications since my freshman year: two as a staff writer, one as an assistant editor and finally this one as the buzz editor. Like buzz and this guide, I’ve grown and

changed in so many ways, and I could not be more proud of the buzz staff and this year’s final product of “Best of CU.” While different from past guides, it captures the essence of “Best of CU,” which I know is cherished by so many people in the C-U community, including me. Many of us have had a rough year and half, but the support of the C-U community is what keeps the buzz staff motivated and unified. We’ve

YOUR MONEY STAYS

ON CAMPUS

had the chance to speak with local business owners about the impact of COVID-19 as well as see some new businesses flourish, and it’s been a pleasure to be able to tell some of these people’s stories and share their many talents with the C-U community. “Best of CU” allows both buzz and the community to celebrate everything C-U has to offer and give some recognition to the people, places and things that touch our lives so deeply. Buzz and The Daily Illini want to thank everyone who voted and read the paper. Without your support, we wouldn’t be able to successfully do our job and highlight some of the community’s favorites, and we couldn’t be more thankful for your participation and passion for everything that makes C-U so special. We hope you enjoy this year’s “Best of CU,” and we look forward to producing next year’s edition in 2022. garibay5@readbuzz.com

2ND PLACE: YE OLDE DONUT SHOP 3RD PLACE: HOPSCOTCH BAKERY

Pandamonium is a from-scratch bakery that’s committed to using fresh, high-quality ingredients that are organic and local. The shop has flavors ranging from pumpkin spice to cereal killer to blueberry lemon and more. The shop also has coffee, drinks and other merchandise. Blue Guy By Isabelle Bertolini Contributing Writer

The one. The only. The Illini Blue Guy. It’s a signature drink that came from the well-known bar KAMS. It is typical for college campuses to have signature drinks from their most popular bars; the Blue Guy is that drink for Illinois. KAMS, “The Home of the Drinking Illini,” has deals on Blue Guys throughout the week. The drink is often paired with the Illini tradition of “icing out,” where you grab all the ice out of your drink and chug. Blue Guys are made up of one shot of vodka and four to five ounces of a blue raspberry energy drink called “Bam!” It is super sugary and bound to stain your tongue blue almost instantaneously (which also makes for a great picture). Bam! also comes in a can, with a diet option available for those conCAMERON KRASUCKI THE DAILY ILLINI

cerned about the sugar content. If there are any alumni or off-campus students that miss the feeling of having a Blue Guy in your hand, they are available for delivery. Blue Guys are also offered now in can form, and they are sold primarily in Champaign. The vibrant drink is so popular in the C-U community that during the pandemic KAMS sold Blue Guys to-go. During the shelter-in-place order, they offered a $20 package that included all the ingredients necessary to make 16 Blue Guys to help cure the KAMS drought that many college students were going through. So, if you’re 21 or older, ice-out some Blue Guys, take a photo of your stack of cups and wind down with your friends after class at KAMS. ib5@readbuzz.com

BEST PIZZA

2ND PLACE: PAPA DEL’S 3RD PLACE: MIA ZA’S

Manolo's Pizza & Empanadas By Casey Daly Staff Writer

Many Illini come from the Chicagoland area and crave a good pizza once in a while. Still, the fact remains: it can be hard to find good pizza in Central Illinois. Manolo’s Pizza & Empanadas in Urbana is a hidden gem on a campus where Papa John’s is prevalent. The C-U area does have several places for some quality pizza, though, and the community has decided that Manolo’s pizza is the best in the area. Manolo’s Pizza & Empanadas stands on the narrow shoulders of Oregon Street, perfect for students quadjumping between classes looking for a quick bite to eat. The shop specializes in the type of thin-crust that appeases the dreams of real Chicagoans and New Yorkers who are looking for a little taste

of home. It is neither Chicago style or New York Style but a type of oven-baked thin crust that could only exist nearby Urbana’s culinary stars like The Bread Company. Manolo’s Empanadas are the cousin of the calzone, cooked crispy and chewy enough to melt in the mouth with a crunch. Manolo’s also knows that college kids love dip and provides dipping sauces. Manolo’s gives the pizza experience a twist, adding jalapeños, veggies and olives to its pies. It sometimes even experiments with chives, red pepper and other savory wonders to satisfy the more explorative pizza eaters. They even offer a glutenfree pizza; just be sure to ask about the availability ahead of time to ensure your pizza. caseyd2@readbuzz.com

Everyone loves a good burger. They’re a simple delicacy, and made correctly, they can be so delicious. The competition for C-U’s Best Burger was high with several strong contenders, but the people of C-U have spoken, and Farren’s has taken the spot of Best Burger. Farren’s Pub & Eatery is located in downtown Champaign at 117 N. Walnut St. and is currently open for indoor seating (masks required, of course) and curbside pick up. Though only moving to the Walnut Street location in 2019, which allowed for more space and seating, Farren’s has already proved to be a staple of the local dining scene. The interior is casual but welcoming — the perfect mood for a burger joint. Even if you’re not in the mood for a full meal,

Farren’s can be a place to grab a couple of appetizers and catch up with some friends. Besides the beloved burgers, Farren’s also serves a variety of salads with house made dressing and appetizers like fried cauliflower and fresh fried truffle potato chips. So, even if you’re not the biggest burger fan or just a picky eater, you can still tag along with friends and should be able to find something you like. For anyone who’s avoiding meat, you can also replace the burger with a black bean burger instead. BEST RESTAURANT TO TAKE YOUR PARENTS TO

2ND PLACE: THE BREAD COMPANY 3RD PLACE: BIG GROVE TAVERN

Black Dog By Sydney Wood Assistant buzz Editor

Unfortunately, the Taco Bell on Green Street isn’t an ideal dining option for many parents visiting their children at the University. Fortunately, there are plenty of options in downtown Champaign and Urbana for students to bring their parents to, including this year’s “Best of CU” winner, Black Dog Smoke & Ale House. The restaurant’s Urbana location is temporarily closed, but its Champaign location at 320 N. Chestnut St. is open every day of the week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The location offers on-site eating and online orders. If your parents are fans of barbecue and cocktails, they’ll definitely appreciate the food and

beverages Black Dog has to offer. The restaurant’s menu boasts an array of food ranging from salads, chili, barbecue sandwiches and platters. Some menu items include pulled pork sandwiches, barbecue salmon sliders, brisket sandwiches and chicken wings. Black Dog also features an assortment of unique cocktails, like raspberry pepper margaritas, grapefruit hibiscus margaritas and Give It A Chai, a drink made from gin, lemon-ginger syrup and chai tea. Black Dog is easily a community favorite, so don’t be afraid to let your parents give it a try, too. Bubble tea is a highly popular treat for college students but especially for University of Illinois. Though the University has several spots for bubble tea, for the third year in a row, Kung Fu Tea has earned the title of Champaign-Urbana’s favorite in the highly-competitive bubble tea scene. The locally-owned franchise location is one of more than 250 across the country. Bubble tea — also known as boba tea — is a milk tea-based drink characterized by its use of chewy tapioca pearls. The beverage originated in Taiwan during the 1980s and quickly grew in popularity in the U.S. in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The drink has since become a symbol of Asian American identity. Tea may be in the name, but two of the shop’s most popular menu items are actually foods: the popcorn chicken and the poke bowls. Poke is a Hawaiian dish consisting of diced raw fish and an assortment of vegetables, sauces and seasonings. Although the space does get crowded during peak hours, the shop features spacious booths for large groups and plenty of table seating. A small collection of tabletop games are available for patrons to use during their stay. Kung Fu Tea is located near the intersection of Green and Sixth streets, the perfect location for a stop on the way back from class or for a mid-day treat, because we all deserve one. alexisr5@readbuzz.com

What’s the best place on campus that regularly reps orange and blue? If you’re thinking of the soap dispensers in the Lincoln Hall bathrooms, you’re absolutely right. When you’re not busy rubbing Abraham Lincoln’s nose for good luck before an exam or vibing in the Lincoln Hall courtyards, be sure to check out the building’s biggest attraction: its bathrooms, obviously. With its sleek silver bathroom stall doors and motion-sensor sinks, it’s no surprise why these bathrooms are popular among University students and faculty alike. The Illini-themed orange-and-blue soap dispensers are the most colorful component of the modern-looking bathroom that features a slate-grey floor and cream-

Because of college students’ unfortunate yet insatiable urge to steal toilet paper rolls – and other relatively cheap household necessities, as shown in the suspicious number of silverware missing from the dining halls – padlocks prevent students from stealing full rolls from the bathrooms, which is an admittedly common occurrence in a majority of on-campus bathrooms. So if you’re ever feeling down and need more orange-and-blue soap dispensers in your life, remember to keep the Lincoln Hall bathrooms on your list of must-visit campus attractions. swood2@readbuzz.com

The canopy of trees hanging overhead provides a calming environment for those needing a reminder of the beautiful nature on campus to cheer them up. Since the bell tower is nearby, it acts as a great 15 minute timer for those who just need a short breather. It’s important to remember that there’s no shame in letting a cry out every once in a while, especially if you’re in college, and the C-U community has already agreed that these statues are a perfectly acceptable place to to do that. These status are the perfect alcove, hidden right in the center of the hustle and bustle on the Main Quad, to take a moment to yourself and cry it out. ogr3@readbuzz.com.

Arguably one of the best parts of college is meeting new people, but sometimes we aren’t in a social mood and would rather people-watch than interact with them. Whether it’s squirrels or people, watching interactions on campus is an entertaining way to pass the time for many. The Main Quad is the perfect location to watch some shenanigans: a Spikeball or frisbee game, students tabling or campus preachers. The lush green space has great spots to sit — stone benches along the sidewalk, bases of trees and the steps of Foellinger Auditorium. Even hanging up a hammock amongst the trees provides a great view of all the life around. In

the afternoons, the Main Quad is full of people passing by on their way to different places on campus; there is a constant flow of traffic, with new people coming and going every minute. Even the animals on the Main Quad are amusing to watch. Squirrels are continuously trying to ravage garbage cans or pick up any crumbs they can find, without fear of getting close to the people around them. If you wanted, you could even people-watch the other students on campus that are people-watching. Next time you have a break between classes in the heart of campus, take a minute to look around at all the other life around you. There is never a dull moment when people-watching on the Main Quad. ogr@readbuzz.com.

BEST PLACE TO MEET NEW PEOPLE

2ND PLACE: KAMS 3RD PLACE: THE QUAD

House Parties By Olivia Rosenburg buzz Assistant Editor

Thanks to the University’s safety precautions in response to the pandemic, the campus social scene is roaring once again. There are countless places to meet on campus, and our students have voted that house parties are the best place. House parties bring a variety of people together with music, fun and a laid-back environment. While bars and campus buildings offer a great place to do work and meet people with similar interests, house parties open the door to others with different ideas and goals. New connections can spark curiosity and be a great way to delve into an interesting conversation with a stranger. Parties are also a great place to have fun. Dancing, laughing and listening to good music all work together to create a

lighthearted mood. “It’s easier to connect with new people over music,” said freshman Maia Shelegeda. Music, for many, creates a more comfortable and unified environment, making it easier to relax and really connect with people. It can serve as a conversation starter or just set the atmosphere in the room. In either case, music at parties brings people together and creates a fun, carefree environment. Whether you’re hanging out by the food, jamming to the music or actively seeking out new connections, house parties allow you to open up to new people and make fun memories. Students are able to take a break from the stress of school and make new connections at parties this year. nduffy3@readbuzz.com RYAN ASH THE DAILY ILLINI

BEST PHOTO OP

Japan House By Olivia Rosenburg buzz Assistant Editor

College is all about the memories with the people you meet during four formative years of your life. But really what’s the point of taking pictures if you can’t post them on social media? And you can’t really post on social media without a good background, which is why taking a bit of a hike around campus to find that perfect photo op could be a fun idea for the next time you have a free day. If you’re hoping to post a new Instagram picture, head to the Japan House gardens in Urbana for the perfect photoshoot location. With beautiful landscape and architecture, the gardens provide a picturesque backdrop fit for anyone’s feeds. The Tea Garden and Dry Garden are two locations at the Japan House that create a variety of spots for photo taking and for hanging BRIGIDA DOCKUS THE DAILY ILLINI

out with friends. Just a short walk from campus, there are bamboo gates and stone paths, which help the area transport visitors to a brand new place. The inner and outer gardens within have many different sights of unique nature, different from the landscaping on campus. The pond in the gardens is not only a great spot to admire nature but also to snap a few photos with friends. There are not many bodies of water in Champaign or Urbana, so the pond is a rare spot to enjoy. In addition to it being the perfect place to take pictures, the Japan House gardens also is a great place to learn about Japanese culture and appreciate the new perspectives learned during a trip there. It is a peaceful and tranquil location where students can take a break from academics and plan a day trip with friends. ogr3@readbuzz.com

BEST BUS STOP

2ND PLACE: TRANSIT PLAZA 3RD PLACE: GREGORY AT IKENBERRY COMMONS

Illini Union By Alexis Ramirez Contributing Writer

Whether you’re a transit-oriented teen or just trying to get from point A to point B, the Illini Union bus stop is just as noteworthy as the eponymous student center. Perfectly situated between the Main Quad, Bardeen Quadrangle (colloquially known as the “Engineering Quad”), Campustown and Transit Plaza, it’s not hard to see why it’s been voted as the best bus stop in the ChampaignUrbana area. It’s the most serviced stop within the University campus by number of routes: eight. One can board the Red, Green, Bronze, Teal, Silver, Raven, Illini and — since mid-August — Link. The Illini Union stop’s current appearance is the result of the Multimodal Corridor Enhancement

Project. Phase 1 of the project, headed by the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District, transformed this section of Green Street into a complete street. Complete streets are designed to be safe for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and public transit riders of all ages and abilities. The contraflow bike lane was replaced by conventional lanes on either side of the street. The added island bus shelter facilitates pedestrian crossing and left turns for routes heading toward Transit Plaza. The Illini Union bus stop is your ticket to nearly all that Champaign, Urbana and Savoy have to offer. While you may board here free of charge thanks to its iStop designation, make sure to bring your iCard or cash for the return trip. Ride on! alexisr5@readbuzz.com

2ND PLACE: DANDELION 3RD PLACE: TWICE IS NICE

BEST THRIFT STORE Salt & Light By Julia Youman Staff Writer

BRIGIDA DOCKUS THE DAILY ILLINI

BEST DATE SPOT

Salt & Light Ministries has once again defended its title as the best thrift store in the Champaign-Urbana area. With two locations, the nonprofit organization works to end poverty on a local and national level. It is completely volunteerrun and hosts several volunteer orientations a week to encourage new people to get involved. Its mission has remained the same throughout the years: to build collaborative relationships between community members and those in need. The concept for the store started from a shared passion for Christian ministries. For anyone looking to help out, Salt & Light offers many volunteer positions from sorting and stocking goods to working at the store. After opening its doors in January 2004, it began an

emergency food pantry and clothing place and quickly grew. Since then, it has donated countless items to families in need and offered critical services like free financial education classes during times of financial hardship for many. At one point, Salt & Light became the county’s largest emergency food pantry, serving hundreds of households a week until changing its model in 2014. In the last few years, it has focused on raising money and donating goods through its thrift stores. Donations ranging from clothing items to household goods to vehicles can be dropped off Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It also offer free estate sale and furniture pickups for donations of six or more goods which can be arranged through its online website. jyouman2@readbuzz.com

2ND PLACE: 3-WAY TIE BETWEEN ESPRESSO ROYALE, COCOMERO AND BIG GROVE TAVERN

The Arboretum By Alexis Ramirez Contributing Writer

The College of ACES describes the University of Illinois Arboretum as an “exceptional living laboratory,” but it’s also been voted as the best “loving laboratory” in the Champaign-Urbana area. Test your connection as you stroll through the 160 acres of natural beauty it has to offer. Experiment with a change of pace from urban date nights with your significant other. The grounds are home to nine different gardens. The Noel Welcome Garden’s natural enclosure offers an intimate space for conversation and an invitation to explore further. The Miles C. Hartley Selections Garden to the east lies at the heart of the Arboretum; and with its octagonal arrangement of colorful flower beds, it may just help you capture your date’s heart. The best time of year to vis-

it the Hartley is currently July through October, but plans are underway to convert it to a four-season garden. On sunny summer mornings, the Oak Grove offers a beautiful sight as sunlight filters through the canopy. Take a break from your walk and stop by the gazebo where you can imagine your future wedding. The Grove and the Hartley are popular venues. In mid-April, the cherry blossom season draws visitors to the Japan House and adjacent Sen Cherry Tree Allée for flower viewing. What could possibly be more romantic than a stroll through cherry blossom petals dancing in the wind? The Arboretum at the corner of Lincoln and Florida avenues is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Admission is free. alexisr5@readbuzz.com DAILY ILLINI FILE PHOTO

One of the staples of the college experience is gaining independence and being able to make life-changing decisions, which parents might judge when you come home for breaks, like getting a tattoo. Luckily, C-U has many places to get a tattoo, and the community has decided that No Regrets is the best spot. No Regrets Tattoos and Body Piercing opened in downtown Champaign in 2006 and has been beloved by the Champaign-Urbana community ever since. The store’s mission to create quality art for affordable prices has carried it to success despite the struggles of running a business. Dedication to these goals has boosted No Regrets’ popularity, which is why it has been named the best tattoo shop in C-U. Champaign fostered No Regrets’ growth during a time when small businesses were frequently going under. The

shop’s owner, Matt Stines, is appreciative of this support, and he strives to offer accessible and quality services for the community. “It’s something we strive for as a business, taking care of our customers,” Stines said. No Regrets has dedicated artists working seven days a week, offering top-quality tattoos and piercings. Keeping its doors open makes the parlor’s services accessible and inspires new customers to come in any day, which sets the shop apart from other shops in the area. For Stines, winning the best tattoo shop in C-U is “an honor and a privilege,” and the shop “(loves) to hear that kind of feedback from customers.” The supportive community that allowed No Regrets to flourish is now showing its appreciation for their piercings and tattoos through their supporting votes.

BEST LOCAL BAND The Data Waves By Sydney Wood buzz Assistant Editor

It’s no secret that the C-U community has a lively, rich music scene, so the results for Best Local Band in C-U were very close. But a winner prevailed, and the community voted The Data Waves as C-U’s best local band. The Data Waves is a local instrumental funk band that formed at the University in 2016. Over the summer, the band played a show at NOLA’s Rock Bar on June 5 and played a show at The Canopy Club on Sept. 18. With jazz fusion music that’s so similar to C-U’s creative spirit, it’s no surprise why The Data Waves are so beloved in the community. The band’s drummer, Shravan Raghuram, said the band’s impact on C-U has evolved over the years. “We owe all of our success as a group to the community which has supported us so greatly over all these years,” he said.

As the house show scene has grown over the years, Raghuram said, the more he’s realized that C-U’s arts community is full of friends who enjoy and support each other, saying anyone is welcome regardless of their background, identity, race, gender, sexuality or financial background. “After five years of recording and gigging across and beyond campus and collaborating with other artists on campus, it’s great to know that our music is still a catalyst for bringing together people of different age groups, backgrounds and life experiences to have a blast with us at our shows, ” Raghuram said. The band’s latest extended play was released on Oct. 22. The EP, titled “Puesta Del Sol,” is a collaboration among The Data Waves, Miyka’el and yourbeautifulruin. It comes as no surprise that the Canopy Club has once again earned the title of best live music venue. From multi-platinum artists to up-and-coming punk bands, The Canopy Club knows how to put on a show. After not being able to hold in-person events for over a year, the club has reopened and is already back to having several shows a week. When Cheat Codes came in September, the line was down the block an hour before the show even started. On any given Saturday night, there’s LOGAN HODSON THE DAILY ILLINI

BEST ON-CAMPUS BAR

2ND PLACE: KAMS 3RD PLACE: RED LION

Murphy's Pub By Casey Daly Staff Writer

If you’re looking for a great beer and a burger at one of campus’ more toned-down locations, Murphy’s Pub is the place to go. Casual, nostalgic and classic, the bar’s low lighting and drafts often attract alumni, graduate students and parents. During fall and spring days, the breeze floats through Murphy’s wide-open windows facing Green Street to delight students happily sipping and typing away on their laptops. On Tuesdays, upperclassmen sit eagerly arched on the barstools for the famous Trivia Night. On Wednesdays, Murphy’s is the place to be — selling a logo glass

for a unique draft with inexpensive refills. Offering a premier selection of drafts, from Angry Orchard to Daisy Cutters to Guinness, Murphy’s is a full-stacked bar that uniquely offers classic beer blends. Its fries are served shoestring style. The staff is friendly and can be often heard joking around with each other behind the counter. Over the years, many Illini have sat in Murphy’s booths for a good drink, meal and laugh. The place is historical but remains relevant. Open since 1969, Murphy’s is voted as campus’ most inviting, pleasant and exemplary bar. caseyd2@readbuzz.com

Many are familiar with some of the University of Illinois’ famous oncampus bars, but not many may be as familiar with the off-campus bar scene. Luckily, some students and many C-U locals know all about what’s great in the area, bar-wise and have cast in their vote for the best off-campus bar. Coming in first place for buzz’s Best of C-U is the Blind Pig Brewery. With its main brewpub located at 120 N. Neil St., along with three other locations nearby, the brewery’s beer is widely recognized as the best of the best here in Champaign-Urbana. In fact, it’s one of the best in the rest of the U.S. as well! Blind Pig Brewery has been voted 26th Best Beer Bar in the entire country by the Beer Advocate and has also made it into the top 150 bars in the United States by Imbible and Draft magazines. EDITORIAL PICKS

The Best Places to Read The Daily Illini By The Daily Illini Editorial Board When given the question of where the best location to read The Daily Illini, numerous spots come to mind. Whether it’s riding a bus and reading the weekly guide or scrolling the site while skateboarding, there are infinite possibilities as to where the DI can be read. Nevertheless, members of the Editorial Board wish to share their preferred places to inspire your DI read:

Diana Anghel, Editor-in-Chief While waiting in line at the Starbucks in the bookstore. Copies are placed conveniently right as you walk in, and the line can get very long.

Heather Robinson, Managing Editor for Reporting Perched on a bench near the Japanese garden. There you can find some rare peace and quiet from the always-happening Main Quad. And if you need a break from processing current events, you can always give your eyes a rest and take in the views, enjoying some local nature while you’re at it.

Chieh Hsu, Managing Editor for Online Between my first and second classes on Wednesday, I enjoy reading the DI in the Communications Library. There are also several news channels and newspapers being displayed in the room, which makes the environment fantastic for newspaper reading.

Ryan Ash, Managing Editor for Visuals The best place to read the DI is the University of Illinois Arboretum. Especially in the spring, it’s great to sit out there with some friends and enjoy the weather.

Jonah Ozer, Design Editor Legends: I personally enjoy getting my scoop of news from the DI with the paper in my right hand, an icecold Riggs wheat beer in my left and a hot, fresh fish sandwich on the table to compliment both. If you’re 21+, you can do the same at Legends.

Cameron Krasucki, Photo Editor The best place to read the DI and look at all the beautiful photos in the issue would be on the steps of Foellinger Auditorium, overlooking the Main Quad. Ideally, it would be sunny and the temperature outside would be in the mid-70’s, creating a comfortable atmosphere for your daily dose of news.

Amrita Bhattacharyya, News Editor Under the cherry trees at the University of Illinois Arboretum.

Carolina Garibay, buzz Editor

Maddie Heidtke, Social Media Director

In between classes — whether that be on the Quad, the engineering quad or somewhere else on campus. This allows you to live out your main character moment, casually walking to class with your face buried in the local paper, while also allowing you to read fantastic stories.

Nestled in the back corner of the second floor of Bevier Hall is Bevier Café. This student-run restaurant is my goto spot for a quick lunch in between classes. It also happens to be my favorite place to read the DI. Every Wednesday, I’ll pick up a copy of the DI, head to Bevier Café and enjoy a turkey pesto panini while catching up on campus news.

Matt Troher, Investigative News & Longform Editor

Nathaniel Langley, Opinions Editor

There is no better place to read the DI than in one of our campus’ many coffee shops. From Caffe Paradiso to any of the miscellaneous Espresso Royales, the eclectic atmosphere of an Illinois coffee shop suits reading the paper better than anywhere else.

Gwyn Skiles, Features Editor Caffe Paradiso: I always think the best way to read the news is with something warm in your hand. Caffe Paradiso has a wonderful, energetic atmosphere and the perfect cup of coffee that goes hand in hand with our stories.

My kitchen counter is the premier place for reading the DI. For the best-balanced breakfast, one must consume fruit, breakfast bars and a healthy portion of the news. Similarly, starting my day knowledgeable of campus news and culture gets me merrily on my way through a campus I then better understand.

Citlaly Leanos, Copy Chief The Main Library is my go-to place to read the DI. The high ceilings and long tables located in the Literature and Languages section on the second floor makes me feel like I’m in a Harry Potter movie. Plus, they always have stacks of the DI available near the entrances! opinions@dailyillini.com

buzz EDITOR PICKS:

BEST UNDERRATED SPOTS ON CAMPUS OFFICE OF STUDENT FINANCIAL AID By Sydney Wood buzz Assistant Editor

THE ILLINI UNION'S SOUTH LOUNGE By Carolina Garibay buzz Editor

The Office of Student Financial Aid is Nestled between the Turner Student Services Building and Illini Hall. Now, you may be asking yourself, “Why are you recommending a student services building as one of the University’s most underrated areas?” That’s a fair question, but it’s not the building itself that’s underrated but rather the area surrounding it. On the north side of the Office of Student Financial Aid is a miniature amphitheater, complete with a small grassy area and a few steps for people to sit on. If you don’t want to sit on the steps, there are also a few benches in the area. Now, I’m unsure what the purpose of this area is, but my friends and I go there often to relax and have late-night conversations. At night, the area is a nice place to stargaze, and it’s relatively quiet because of its secluded location. Though it’s near Green Street, I’ve spent many nights there and only one or two people pass through the area. You can access the area via the sketchy-looking alley on South Wright Street near the Career Center or the area between the Turner Student Services Building and Illini Hall. Also, there’s at least one rabbit that’s always in the area, so keep an eye out for it. Though I’d love to gatekeep this area, the pseudoamphitheater remains one of my favorite underrated campus locations to vibe at night.

The University of Illinois campus is full of underrated spots, and many of them hidden in areas of campus students might not frequently visit. But one of campus’ best and most underrated spots is actually swood2@readbuzz.com not so hidden. Located on the south side of the Illini Union is the South Lounge, the big room that overlooks the Main Quad and connects the east and west sides of the building. Though students pass through this room all the time, not many students have actually sat down and studied there. Not only does the South Lounge offer a silent spot for working, overthinking or napping, it also gives you a gorgeous view of the Main Quad and has a ton of natural light to motivate and energize you. If you’re looking for a place to cram for an exam, write an entire essay in one sitting or just vibe for a few minutes in between classes, the South Lounge is perfect. You’re usually guaranteed a spot. The room is never full with people filtering in and out as they’re going to classes. Besides the perfect mix of tables, comfy chairs and couches, the South Lounge is also super close to the Union Starbucks, so you can use your study session as an excuse for a quick Starbucks run. The South Lounge also has a piano that’s open for people to play, so if you’re lucky (or unlucky depending on your preferred level of noise), someone might be playing the piano, which can be really nice background noise for studying. garibay5@readbuzz.com

KRANNERT ART MUSEUM By Olivia Rosenburg buzz Assistant Editor

Out of the numerous hidden gems in C-U, my favorite underrated spot would have to be the Krannert Art Museum. Located on the corner of Sixth Street and Peabody Drive, the museum is home to a diverse collection of art pieces from around the world. It is easy to get lost within its galleries as they are a tranquil escape from campus. Whether you have a free 15 minutes or two hours, Krannert Art Museum is filled with enough pieces, exhibitions and programs to keep you engaged for your entire visit. The museum has 10 galleries both indoors and outdoors; my personal favorite would have to be the Bow Gallery. The collection consists of 10,000 works ranging all the way from the 30th century B.C. to 2021. Pieces from notable artists like Andy Warhol, Charles Burchfield and Gabriele Münter can be found on gallery walls. With free admission, students and community members are welcome to visit Krannert Art Museum at any time during its open hours. On Tuesdays through Saturday, the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. except on Thursdays when the hours are extended till 8 p.m. during the academic year. Personally, I think this the perfect place for anyone looking for a place to wind down and enjoy some artwork unique to the C-U community. Its quiet, creative appeal makes it one of the best underrated spots on campus. ogr3r@readbuzz.com
