Alma dresses for Chinese New Year In-state tuition freezes for fall

THE DAILY ILLINI STAFF REPORT

The University will freeze tuition for in-state freshmen for the fifth straight year next fall. The last time the University experienced a tuition freeze of this length was from 1962 to 1968. However, non residents will have increased tuition along with student fees and housing costs, which will keep up with inflation. Tom Hardy, executive director of the University of Illinois System, said the tuition freeze helps prevent Illinois residents from attending colleges in other states, which affects the Illinois economy because graduates typically find employment in the state where they study. “As a major state higher institution in Illinois, our primary constituents for enrollment are high school graduates in Illinois,” Hardy said. “We want to be affordable to all qualified students in Illinois. We want to grow our enrollment and make it possible and preferable for high school graduates to attend our universities instead of taking their intellect and skills to another state.” Barbara Wilson, executive vice president and vice president for Academic Affairs of the University of Illinois System, said in an email that the tuition freeze will allow the three universities to stay in line with competing schools. For the ChampaignUrbana campus, Wilson said the peer comparisons are Big Ten schools and top-ranked universities outside Illinois. This includes the University of Michigan, Purdue University, UC Berkeley, Indiana University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “Our three universities are always benchmarking our tuition levels by comparing to our peers,” Wilson said. “The fiveyear tuition freeze for in-state undergraduates has helped us stabilize our costs, which are now more in line with our peers.”

App boosts peer assistance BY DAVID RUVINSKIY STAFF WRITER

Although many students choose to seek help for their classes by going to office hours, a University student is aiming to provide an alternative by developing a new app called Subawu, which con-

nects STEM students with their peers. Oluwabusayo Adebayo, sophomore in ACES, had the idea for the app about a year ago after struggling to receive the help he needed while attending office hours for his chemistry class.

“I’ve been to so many office hours, and it just wasn’t helping me,” Adebayo said. “They did help as much as possible, the best way that they could, but I feel like I wasn't getting that much one-on-one interSEE APP | 3A

After several accounts of sexual misconduct and sexual assault allegations at the University, several faculty members joined together to create a panel to review sexual misconduct policies. The panel of professors and University board members consists of seven women and five men. Robin Kar, professor in law who is also fulfilling the role of chair committee and spokesman, said that it was important that the majority of the panel is women. “ W hen it comes to understanding the dynamics of sexual harassment and the experience as victims, many are wom-

en, henceforth, it’s very important to have people who studied that and I believe many of them should be women,” Kar said. There is no requirement for other faculties to join the panel; however, being on the panel is a volunteer job and looking at the seriousness of the issue, it requires people who are fully involved and want to get it right, he said. “Everyone on this committee cares a lot and I can imagine people saying they’re too busy and just don’t have time for it,” Kar said. “You can’t make people be on the committee, but if the provost asks you to do something and if you have an expertise, it’s kind of like the president asks you.” The creation of this panel was inspired following the story of the sexual harassment investigation of another law professor, Jay Kesan, last fall. Perez looks for someone to follow in her footsteps BY ONIX NAVA CONTRIBUTING WRITER

La Casa Cultural Latina has been in search of a new director now that the previous director, Gioconda Guerra Perez, has taken on a new role at the University. However, after over a semester of searching, the position still remains vacant. As the assistant vice chancellor for Diversity and Academic Inclusive Excellence at the University, Perez gets to take what she was working on at La Casa to a larger, campus-wide scale. “Hispanic Heritage month was always a La Casa effort,” Perez said. “Now we are going to have a Hispanic

Heritage Month on the calendar, and we’re going to bring in a great, well-known speaker in journalism, and we’re putting funding into it. So now it’s the campus Hispanic Heritage Month. We’re expanding for the first time. We’re going to have big things going on. It’s not a one-group event; it’s a campus-wide event.” While Perez said her experience at La Casa has helped her feel comfortable at the Office of the Vice Chancellor, La Casa is now looking for someone to fill her place as director.
