“Unofficial is officially on its way to being trademarked — at least when it’s written on the green t-shirts that cover campus during the fi rst weekend in March. According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, USPTO, website, the clothing company “UpMerch fi led a trademark application for the term “Unofficial on Oct. 19. The sale of Unofficial-related merchandise by both students and community members has become a growing market in recent memory, even creating controversy surrounding “Unofficial Chiefs, which are commonly featured on Unofficial apparel. The University’s Campus License Coordinator Marty Kaufmann told The Daily Illini last year that the University can only control the circular depiction of Chief Illiniwek through its trademark. But the growth of the Unofficial merchandise market may quickly be impacted by the trademark on the term. UpMerch LLC is listed as the owner of the trademark, though according to a representative from the company, they said they have no affi liation with the Unofficial Shirts brand on campus. The representative said UpMerch bought the trademark “for a corporate customer of ours, but said the company could not reveal who the customer is. However, within the USPTO trademark fi les are PDF images with shirts displaying “www. unofficialshirts.com on the inside. UpMerch was founded by University alumnus Kevin Alsterda in 2015. Alsterda, who could not be reached for comment, is also known for founding KRA Apparel; Unofficial Shirts was a subsidy of KRA Apparel. Douglas Beck, former cochair of the search committee for University president, said the search firms were chosen with little or no input from the presidential search committee. “The University maintains a list of prequalified search firms, they provide a proposal for a given search and then

As of Feb. 9, the trademark was “approved for pub-principal register, meaning the fi nal review prior to publication has been completed and the trademark application will be published for opposition. The application was published for opposition on Feb. 10. The trademark will remain in opposition for 30 days until March 11; during this period any person who believes they will suffer due to the registration of the mark can object to the registration. The trademark is a standard character claim “without claim to any particular font style, size, or color according to the USPTO. Students fight second University mumps outbreak CONTRIBUTING WRITER

With spring weather quickly approaching, the mumps virus has reappeared within the University. Mumps, a highly contagious virus that affects the parotid glands, is confirmed to have spread to the dance department within the past three weeks, sending home both a male and female dancer in the process. Linda Lehovec, associate professor and Bachelor of Fine Arts program codirector, shed light on the steps the dance department took to counter the mumps virus. “We had deep cleaning done in all of our studios, including providing Clorox wipes to wipe off all the ballet barres and asking all faculty to not have students doing anything that required body to body contact, she said in an email. She said that she hasn’t

seen anything like this in the dance department in her 21 years working in the department, emphasizing the unpredictability of the mumps. “Both students were quarantined – the male for a twoweek period and the female

ing hands a lot, carrying hand sanitizer and being OCD.â€? Both Lehovec and Soldati said that the nature of dance helped to permit the spread of illnesses. “In our department we are in body to body contact a lot ‌ We are also a small department that at times

can feel almost familial, so we often don’t hesitate to share food or drink with a classmate, Lehovec said. A college campus is prime for the spread of the mumps virus, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as students are regularly in close proximity to one another and the vaccine is only 90 percent effective. In addition, the weather shifting to warmer temperatures may only increase the spread of the virus, according to the CDC. Besides getting the booster vaccine, washing hands and preventing the spread of saliva are ways to prevent contracting mumps. The outbreak is not the first time mumps has spread on campus; last semester several cases of mumps developed, prompting the University to offer free vaccinations.
