Searches under way for 3 vacant dean positions The College of Engineering, the College of Veterinary Medicine and the library are searching for new deans to fi ll positions left by pending departures. The College of Media also still lacks a permanent dean, but a search is not being conducted at this time. Dean searches for the College of Veterinary Medicine and the library are under way and are conducted by
committees of “experienced leaders on campus,” said campus spokeswoman Robin Kaler in an email. The College of Engineering will conduct an independent national search aided by search fi rm Isaacson, Miller. Kaler said the committees’ jobs are to name fi nalists for the positions, but Provost Ilesanmi Adesida will make the fi nal hiring decisions. Committee members are unable to comment on the searches until they
have been completed, Kaler said. She said the Office of the Provost expects to have the searches completed by late spring or early summer. “Colleges need to engage in multiyear planning efforts,” Kaler said. “So it is always preferable to have permanent deans in place.” Because this leadership is necessary, Kaler said, current deans for the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Library will remain in their positions
until chosen permanent deans assume their roles. Veterinary Medicine Dean Herbert Whiteley announced in October that he will be returning to a faculty position after serving as the college’s dean for the past 12 years. In his tenure as dean, Whiteley said he plans to continue working as a faculty member after stepping down. He said he decided to step down because it was a convenient time for

Facebook page opens admiration on campus Anonymous students write open love notes BY YELE AJAYI STAFF WRITER
Three anonymous University students created a Facebook page called University of Illinois Secret Admirers, which allows students to post their feelings about friends or strangers they admire. The page has been running for under a month and it has more than 3,000 likes and more than 600 submissions waiting to be posted. One of the anonymous cre-
ators said the purpose of this page was to create an outlet for students to express their feelings toward their peers, especially if they are too shy to do so in person. The page also gives students a chance to speculate who their admirers are. Students like Timothy John, junior in LAS, said they found the page entertaining. “I find the page funny,” he said. “Although I never found out who the person was behind the post (about me), I’m hoping she’s cute.”

Union rallies on eve of negotiations BY DAN WELIN STAFF WRITER
A day before contract negotiations between the University and the Service Employees International Union Local 73 are set to resume, service workers rallied in front of the Henry Administration Building to show the University that they are “still serious.”
“We want to send a message that we haven’t given up, we’re still serious, we plan to negotiate in good faith, but management is going to have to offer us something that our members will accept,” SEIU lead negotiator Ricky Baldwin said. About 30 protesters clad in winter gear and banging buck-
ets circled outside the administration offices in the fi rst rally held since SEIU ended its strike March 13. “Management is counting on the time elapsed. Members are starting to get their paychecks three days short and are starting to have to pay their bills,” Baldwin said. “That’s why it’s
important for them to see the members out here because they’re the ones that are going to vote yes or no.” Campus spokeswoman Robin Kaler said in an email that the University is willing to work out an agreement.

“I was really shocked but also flattered. It was really nice to know that someone admires me. My admirer did not talk about following me home or to work or anything creepy at all. If they had, then it would’ve been strange, (but) it was definitely more entertaining.” STEPHANIE LONA, sophomore in Engineering
“When I found out I was on there, I couldn’t believe it! I was really happy and excited. Usually, my friends will tag me in a comment when they think it is about me, and I’m always curious and eager to read and try to guess who it is.” KATHLEEN HACKER, freshman in Media
“Well when I first realized I was on it, I couldn’t say I was surprised. I have a great personality and expected more posts about me. But one still made me happy, and I will aggressively flirt with any and everyone in search of my secret admirer.” KEVIN GALLAGHER, junior in LAS
“I found out my friend was just messing around with me and submitted one, but he didn’t tell me until it was actually posted. But I think the site in general is really entertaining.” TORI BUSEMAN, junior in LAS
Snowstorm leads to 44 crashes, 4 injuries on Interstate 57 from Sunday to Tuesday DAILY ILLINI STAFF REPORT
Following a snowstorm that dropped nearly a foot of snow on the Urbana-Champaign area, 531 incidents were reported on Interstate 57 from 2 p.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Illinois State Police. Recorded incidents included accidents, stranded motorists and cars stuck in ditches. Of these incidents, ISP reported 44
INSIDE
crashes, and of those, only four injuries were reported. “Between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. (on Sunday) is when I contacted the University and asked to have something sent out,” said trooper Tracy Lillard, ISP safety education officer. “We were experiencing a high number of students who were the people stuck in ditches.” About three hours into the
snowfall, Lillard said ISP deemed I-57 so hazardous that traveling was dangerous. She said ISP advises motorists to always stay in the vehicle, and to have fuel and a phone available during these especially hazardous conditions. While traveling back to campus Monday, a University student was transported to Carle Foundation Hospital after being
run over by a vehicle on I-57. Ethan Asofsky, senior in Media and Illini Media employee, exited his vehicle in the center median lane because of the road conditions, according to a press release. Asofsky, a sports writer for The Daily Illini, fl agged down a friend who was driving by and stopped to assist him. ISP trooper Brian Scott
arrived on the scene on the northbound side of the interstate. He saw Asofsky begin to cross the interstate to approach the squad car. Before he attempted to cross, a car lost control and spun out, striking Asofsky and pinning him underneath the vehicle. Scott, along with bystanders and the driver of the vehicle, lifted the car off Asofsky and freed
him. He was transported to Carle around 12:30 p.m. His injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. He was released from the hospital Tuesday. “Thanks so much for all the well wishes everyone. I have a lot to live for. Couldn’t thank those who pulled me out enough,” Asofsky tweeted Tuesday evening.
