Rauner defeats Quinn Davis, Ammons, Durbin win; Senate goes Republican
Quinn not yet conceding DAILY ILLINI STAFF REPORT
Republican businessman Bruce Rauner has defeated Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn in what has been widely regarded to be one of the closest gubernatorial races of the 2014 election cycle. Tuesday’s victory marks the fi rst time Rauner has been elected to public office. “This is a historic time in Illinois,” Rauner said. “The voters have spoken. The voters have asked for a divided government. For the fi rst time, we will have a Republican governor and a Democratic legislature.” Rauner said he called Mike Madigan, speaker of the Illinois General Assembly, and John Cullerton, president of the Illinois Senate, telling them his win was an opportunity for them to work together. The average of available polling for the gubernatorial election, compiled by political polling aggregate RealClearPolitics, put Gover-
nor Quinn ahead of Rauner by just .8 points going into Election Day, while Quinn’s approval rating hovered around 35 to 40 percent. Before beginning his political career, Rauner had a successful career working in the investment fi rm GTCR, which continues to oversee retirement investments for public workers. “Let’s shake up Springfield. Let’s bring back Illinois,” he said.

Incumbent Davis tops Callis Freshman republican Congressman Rodney Davis defeated Judge Ann Callis in his bid for re-election to Illinois’ 13th Congressional seat. “I remain humble and grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve the families of this area,” Davis said in a statement. “We have so much work to do, but I believe that together, we can govern and make Washington work again.” Davis was sworn in to his position in January 2013 and is currently a sitting member of the House Agriculture and Transportation and Infrastructure committees. In his first term, Davis
introduced the Hire More Heroes Act, which would have allowed employers to exclude military veterans receiving health care from the Department of Defense or the Department of Veterans Affairs from employer insurance mandated under the Affordable Care Act. The bill passed the House of Representatives but failed to pass in the Senate. In a news release, Callis said she wishes Davis and his family the best. “It has been inspiring to have met so many incredible people since I resigned as Chief Judge and entered this race,” she said.

Ammons wins 103rd house seat
Democrat Carol Ammons defeated her Republican challenger, Kristin Williamson, in the race for the 103rd District of the Illinois House of Representatives. “I’m honored to be the state representative. I look forward to serving and we’re going to work hard,” Ammons said. “That’s what our campaign really showed: that we were willing to work hard and so I think people will appreciate the service.” Ammons had been considered the favorite for the race and had won the endorsement of retiring six-term state representative Naomi Jakobsson,
a democrat. Ammons previously served five years on the Champaign County Board and is a member of the Urbana City Council. “The person I want to say thanks to the most is this guy right here,” Williamson said as she motioned toward her son. “About six months ago, he said, ‘You know, mom, even if we don’t win, we can still knock on people’s doors and ask how we can help.’ It was in that moment that it didn’t matter how the race went. I did my job.”
