Champaign

A retail theft was reported at County Market, 331 E. Stoughton St., around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

According to the report, the unknown offenders stole liquor from the store without payment.

A case of criminal damage to property was reported in the 900 block of Hickory Street around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. According to the report, the unknown offender had caused damage to the victim’s vehicle.

University

A wallet and cellphone were stolen from the First and Stadium Playfield Multiplex in the 0-100 block of East Gregory Drive in Champaign. The student reported that they were stolen between 6:45-8 p.m. on Thursday.

The student had left the items, valued at $525, in an unattended backpack.

A robbery was reported at Memorial Stadium, 1402 S. First St., around 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday. University employees reported that someone had broken into a safe in their office and stole headphones and cash.

Urbana

A theft was reported in the 500 block of West High Street around 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. According to the report, the unknown offender stole the victim’s unsecured bicycle from their backyard.

A theft of motor vehicle parts was reported in the 1400 block of West Park Street around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. According to the report, the unknown offender stole the front license plate from the victim’s vehicle while they were at work.

Champaign LGBT inclusiveness above national average

In Champaign, the LGBT community is treated more equally by the city government than the average city in the nation, according to a report released by the Human Rights Campaign.

“The Champaign score is 77, which is above the national average of 55,” said Xavier Persad, legislative counsel for the Human Rights Campaign. “Champaign also scored above the average of the nine cities in Illinois that we rated, which was 68.”

In the annual report, cities are given a score out of 100 based on criteria evaluating citywide resources, protections and services.

“We’re looking for nondiscrimination protections that apply citywide in employment, housing and public accommodation,” Persad said. “We’re looking at whether the city offers employees transgender-inclusive healthcare benefits.”

Persad said Human Rights Campaign also looks at whether a city has a con-

tractor non-discrimination ordinance, which states that the city will not enter into a contract with any business that doesn’t have inclusive and non-discrimination LGBT policies for its employees.

In 2015, Champaign received a score of 78 out of 100. The city received a score of 70 in 2014 and 74 in 2013.

“A small amount of those (changes in) points is due to changes that we have in our scorecard year-to-year based on the legal landscape changing, and items being added and taken away,” Persad said.

While Champaign scored higher than both the state and national averages in the report, Persad said there are still areas in which the city could improve.

“It looks like Champaign isn’t getting credit for … appointing an LGBTQ liaison in the police department, and offering services to particularly vulnerable members of the LGBTQ community,” he said. “Like LGBTQ youth, LGBTQ

Researcher holds lecture on brain imaging, mental illness Maclin brings knowledge of the mind to his talk

Beckman Institute senior scientist Ed Maclin led a lecture on neuroscience titled “A Random Walk through the Brain" on Friday at the McKinley Foundation Church.

He spoke about the importance of studying the brain and the impacts of research on treating mental illness.

“We study the brain to understand mental illness and ourselves,” Maclin said.

“We need to understand ourselves as biological beings before interacting with each other,” Maclin said.

As a teen he stumbled across a few books that laid the foundation for his fascination in science and philosophy: Bertrand Russell’s “A History of Western Philosophy” and “Human Knowledge” as well as Alfred Korzybski’s “Science and Sanity.”

To Maclin, these books provided the beginning of conceptual thinking and the workings of the brain.

In the lecture, he touched on the ideas of having the ability to build on our pasts and the research he undertook to demonstrate it.

“The point of my lecture was to try to give a sense of the range of different projects that I worked on over the years,” Maclin said. “I also wanted to touch a little bit on how my career devel-

oped by choice as well as random opportunities that arose.”

His career in research was guided by both an interest in fundamental lessons of psychology and an interest in the application of technology as well as a fundamental understanding of problems.

He addressed the issue of the study of memory in professional psychology, stating that people lose track of the fact that even single cells have memory. Part of his research touches on levels of motivation and memory from single cell to cultural level.

“Self-understanding is key to healthy behavior,” Maclin said. “We won’t have matured until we understand ourselves as biological and psychological beings.”

At his first job, Maclin worked in an educational testing service, in which he and his colleagues researched cognitive style and psychological differentiation. They studied the technicalities behind dreaming and discovered that stages of sleep have effects on it.

“We don’t understand dreams,” he said. “They are appropriated to fit weird narratives that dreams have.”

Maclin correlated his findings to that of J.M.R. Delgado’s, “Physical Control of the Mind,” in which he said that the brain can be manipulated electrically in precise ways.

His role in that research involved localizing things in the brain. He discovered

Ed Maclin, senior researcher at the Beckman Institute, talked about his career researching the parts of the human brain that result in consciousness. that depth increased with eccentricity, meaning the more eccentric, the deeper the stimulus in the back of the brain.

In 1982, six people in Santa Clara County in California were diagnosed with Parkinson's disease after having used MPPP (Desmethylprodine) contaminated with MPTP, a prodrug compound that produces permanent symptoms of Parkinson's. This led to his next research experiments.

“These experiments made me reflect long and hard on

the ethics of animal experimentation, even for medical research,” Maclin said.

After that, he studied electroconvulsive therapy at the New York State Psychiatric Institute.

“It’s safe, and its side effects pale in comparison beside the effects of depression and are comparable to the effects of drug treatment,” he said.

His background in psychology extends from memory to attention to conflict and novelty as well as plasticity, aging, infants and

preemies, neurovascular coupling, vascular health and emotional cognition.

He said that 50 percent of people have acute mental health and that 30 percent of jail mates have chronic or severe mental health issues.

“Knowledge and understanding are critical in addressing mental health issues,” said Maclin.

He also said that mental health issues have effects on a societal level and that the basis to relieving this issue starts with sympathy and understanding.

“Although we are making progress in understanding and alleviating mental health issues, I think the most important thing is that we all understand the nature of the problems, how common they are, and that we be aware of early symptoms," he said.

He also said that people should be willing to seek professional help, especially since there is a lot of ignorance and prejudice about mental health issues.

Planetarium director creates stellar night sky display for visitors For 20 years, entertainment, music and learning intersect at light shows hosted by Parkland teacher

The lights went off and everyone was silent. Then, David Leake cracked a joke.

“I should have probably hit play when the lights were on,” he said.

Leake is the director of the William M. Staerkel Planetarium and has worked there for over twenty years. He also teaches physics a nd astronomy at Parkland College.

“I have been doing (astronomy) since the fifth grade,” he said. “I haven’t been running the planetarium since the fifth grade, though.”

Leake said that the sky is perhaps one of the most important elements of each show.

“If you’re going to work in a planetarium, what you really need is to know the sky very well, so that you can interpret it for the people that come in,” Leake said.

The planetarium is home to several light shows throughout the year. “Legends of the Night Sky,” “Two Small Pieces of Glass,” “Dark Side of the Moon” and “The Wall” are a few of the laser shows this month.

A typical laser show encompasses renowned songs from popu la r bands, planets, stars and laser elements that when

fused together provide somewhat of a psychedelic experience.

Not all shows are the same, Leake said. The laser comes programmed and is rented.

“All I do is pick out ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ and hit play,” Leake said. “ Ever y th i ng ( people) saw that involves the laser comes with the show. Everything else, I completely winged.”

He said that the tempo of the song dictates what astronomical aspects he decides to add to the show.

For instance, sometimes he adds moving stars, astronomical grids or planets.

“It’s pretty surprising that he wings that part of the show. It actually makes it more awesome and shows how talented he must be,” said Severin Odland, sophomore in ACES. Odland said he was present at the Pink Floyd laser show over Halloween weekend, and said his favorite part was definitely the host.

“The best part of the show was the operator of the planetarium,” Odland said. “The show was beyond incredible because of him.”

Odland said that he heard about the director from other students who raved about how entertaining he was and partly decided to go to the show because of

him.

Like Odland, Justin Vozzo, sophomore in ACES, was present at the Pink Floyd laser show that took place on the Friday before Halloween.

“The lasers definitely provided a good visual experience, which was very well complimented by not only the Pink Floyd music, but the astronomical aspects of the show,” Vozzo said. “I thought (Leake)

“What’s funny is that I had astronomy in fifth grade and the next time I had astronomy, I was a junior in college,” he said.

was very enthusiastic, and he definitely made the show more enjoyable.”

Leake aims to make each laser show “different.”

“To be honest with you,” Leake said, “I think plain laser shows are boring.

You are just watching cool patterns, but then you put the stars up there, and all of a sudden there’s depth.”

“The planetarium opened … and I ended up doing some shows there,” Leake said. “I found out I wasn’t too bad at it.”

Leake said that his favorite part of his job is “sharing (his) passion for the sky with others.”

“I love doing shows for kids and watching

the light bulb go off,” he said. “Even in my college classes the other day, one of my students yelled ‘Get the hell out!’ The greatest thing is those moments where people are surprised or they didn’t know something, and it hits them.

That’s the excitement I live for.”

L e a k e ’s teachi ng philosophy is, “if you’re having fun, you learn more,” which is why he uses avant-garde tactics in the classroom.

“My students probably think I’m a little insane.

For instance, if I’m going to lecture on telescopes, I come into class ‘coughing,’” he said. “I will have an empty water bottle, and I’ll ask someone to fill it up and then I’ll say, ‘Wait, I have some over here,’ and in a very quick motion, I will pick up a pitcher of water and dump it all over myself (trying to fill up the bottle).”

This gets the classroom’s attention, he said. Then, he asks what he could have done differently. Some students will say pour slowly and others will ask why he didn’t use a funnel.

“I will say, ‘Oh right, I carry a funnel with me everywhere I go,” he said.

‘But then I’ll pull out a funnel from my back pocket.”

Most of the water misses the opening of the bottle,

but the remaining water goes through the funnel.

“The little opening is your eye; the light goes right passed it, unless you have a telescope,” Leake said. “That’s what telescopes are: light funnels.”

Part of Leake’s job is to trick his students into learning science since astronomy is a lot of applied physics.

“I want people to have a good time and look forward to coming class,” Leake said.

L eake is a lso the c o - fo u nd e r of the Champaign-Urbana Astronomical Society, which is celebrati ng their 30th anniversary this year, as well as the co-founder of The Friends of the University of Illinois Observatory.

When Leake was in junior high, he wrote a letter to Carl Sagan, a famous astronomer, asking him for advice on how to get into the field, and Sagan wrote back.

He followed his advice, kept the letter and framed it.

“Some people might consider me a failure since I didn’t become an astronomer,” Leake said.

“But I’m doing what I like to do, and I’m getting people interested.”

Diversity rally to result in public forum with chancellor

After the Black Students for Revolution presented demands at the Swanlund Administration building at a rally on Oct. 24, Chancellor Robert Jones agreed to meet with them as part of a “Freedom Forum” on Nov. 28.

The organization demanded the meeting be public, organizer Karen Olowu, student in LAS, said in an email.

“Public meetings guarantee transparency and allow students to dictate the changes we need,” Olowu wrote.

Jones, alongside Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Renée Romano and Associate Chancellor for Diversity Assata Zerai, will attend the meeting.

“The students in BSFR have raised many important national and campus issues, and we know that we can’t achieve progress unless we work together,” Jones said in an email.

Jones said the University takes student concerns seriously. He reached out to Black Students for Revolution, inviting them to meet and address their concerns.

“We invest a great deal of time, money and effort into building a more welcoming, diverse, inclusive campus community for all of our students, faculty and staff,” he said.

T he orga n i z ation’s demands are fundamental to the future of the University. However, Jones said, it is important for the University to remain attentive to its government bodies and processes: for example, by letting the academic and student senates set campus priorities.

The University appreciates the value and good intentions of the protests held throughout campus, Jones said. However, there are many parts of the community to consider when implementing campus changes.

The upcoming meeting originated as part of a recent Black Students for Revolution student walkout on Oct. 24. After rallying in front of Alma Mater, the events culminated in a march to the Swanlund Administration Building. Protesters then marched into the building where they publicly demanded the meeting.

“We are here to foster an alternative form of power that says higher education is a human right,” said Sunny Ture, a Black Students for Revolution organizer, at

the rally.

Over the past year, Black Students for Revolution formed 13 demands directed to the University administration about changes they wish to see made on campus.

These demands range from deeper consequences for assailants of sexual assault to stopping the increase of tuition at the University.

“Our demands are neither comprehensive, nor do they address entirely new issues,” according to the Black Students for Revolution website.

“They represent a collective student voice, speaking out against violence, oppression, and institutional inaction.”

The student organization

uses “endorsement cards” to showcase their messages are shared by all types of students on campus.

“The endorsement cards are essentially a physical representation of the growing student power on campus and a vehicle for raising the political awareness of students and staff at the University of Illinois,” Olowu said.

During the rally, Black Students for Revolution had 600 endorsement cards from students and on-campus student groups. Since then, they have nearly 1,000 cards.

“Knowledge empowers, and the number of cards we managed to get signed in

under two weeks is proof of how simple and reasonable our demands are,” Olowu said.

Jones is not the first to respond to campus racial controversy.

In 2015, Black Students for Revolution held a rally.

In response, a few students created a Facebook page called “Illini White Student Union,” which posted racial slurs toward minorities.

Then Interim Chancellor Barbara Wilson responded to the page. After the page was created, she sent a massmail denouncing the posts as “disturbing.”

The Facebook page controversy subsequently

reached national attention through articles appearing in USA today and MSNBC. The page still exists and occasionally posts.

Gus Wood, who was an organizer of Black Students for Revolution at the time of the controversy said in a previous interview with The Daily Illini, “that is very disheartening when we’re trying to point out racism on the campus but the national media has been sensationalizing white hate groups forming instead of showcasing the black rally or the black solidarity groups on campus forming.”

Brothers’ theme nights cast a spell on trivia loving students

When Illinois alumnus Michael Ponte pitched the idea of hosting themed trivia nights to Brothers Bar and Grill, he wasn’t sure if students would want to forego a night out in favor of playing trivia.

It was just two years ago, in October 2014, when he first brought Whaddayaknow? Free Pub Trivia, a Chicago-based trivia company, to Champaign.

“As a college-aged adult that loved trivia, I had a feeling that it would be a great demographic to target,” Ponte said. “I figured that if I couldn’t enjoy the kind of trivia that I wanted to while I was down here, I might as well let others experience the fun that I had.”

After partnering with Brothers, Ponte began hosting weekly trivia nights that have been going strong since.

The next trivia night will be at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday and will be Harry Potter themed. The other newly added themes will begin Nov. 8.

Ponte said, on average, he can expect about 10 to 12 teams participating every Tuesday night. Illini Sporcle, a trivia club, was even formed this semester and competes weekly.

The RSO was founded by Christobal Gana, junior in LAS and vice president of Illini Sporcle.

“We decided to start an RSO after meeting in rowing club and coming to Brothers,” Gana said.

Quad Day enabled the club to recruit new members and spread the word about the newly formed club. The executive board and members of Sporcle are currently in competition for the Chicago Trivia tournament, where winners can win up to $1,000.

“Whaddayaknow? has this huge tournament in Chicago twice a year called the Tournament of Champions, and the top three teams or so from each location advance to the big tournament day,” Ponte said. “So there are like 100 teams to compete with.”

The incentive to win $1,000 for something enjoyable is an appeal to both the executive board and Sporcle members, which keeps them coming back each week.

Parker Bradley, senior in Engineering, is a new member of Sporcle and enjoys the competition between the executive members. He hopes to also participate in the tournament.

He said his team attends trivia almost every week and has been in a tight competition with the executive

board’s team after winning the last few consecutive trivia nights.

“Our team has done consistently well each week, and we are trying to qualify for the Chicago Tournament,” Bradley said. “We come because it’s fun, and it’s a chance to win some money and drinks.”

After recognizing the past two years’ success and feeling the need for change, Ponte brought the idea of themed trivia to the Brothers manager and was given permission to add an extra day of trivia every month.

“Sometimes when I tell people that I host trivia, a few say ‘Oh that sounds fun, but I’m so bad at trivia’ or something along those lines,” Ponte said. “Trivia’s not for everyone, I get that. But with themed trivia, you may not be good at a bunch of other categories, but there are always people that are good at one particular topic, especially popular TV shows and movies and books.”

The first themed trivia of the semester was based off of “The Office,” a popular television sitcom. After the event was shared over 750 times on Facebook, Ponte said he was not sure what to expect.

“I had a feeling I was going to have a full house that night, but that would

almost be an understatement,” he said. “Quite honestly, I was only prepared for maybe 30 or 40 teams at most.”

Fifty-eight teams ended up participating in the Monday night event, and Ponte had to go across the street to print more copies of the score sheets for teams to use.

“It was a crazy night and super busy, but I think and hope people enjoyed it,” Ponte said. He realized the success of “The Office” trivia and is preparing himself for the “Harry Potter” trivia night on Nov. 8 and “Friends” themed trivia on Dec. 5.

Next semester Ponte is hoping to host themed trivia two nights a month and is planning for “Game of Thrones” trivia and “How I Met Your Mother.”

The bartenders and customers have given Ponte positive feedback encouraging trivia nights at Brothers to continue.

Austin Kolmodin, Brothers bartender and senior in Business, said he generally sees the same groups at Tuesday night trivia.

“It’s fun,” Kolmodin said.

“You get to casually drink, play games and get competitive, and you get to go home relatively early.”

Nothing should prevent students from voting

It

seems that November is howdid-that-happen season across the country — nothing is impossible.

When the Chicago Cubs fell behind the Cleveland Indians by a 3-1 series deficit, FiveThirtyEight.com estimated the team’s chances of winning the series at a measly 15 percent. And you probably know how that ended.

On the same day, Oct. 30, FiveThirtyEight. com estimated Donald Trump’s chances of winning the presidential election at roughly 21 percent. Since then, Trump has crept up in the poll-based projections to a frightening 35 percent chance of assuming the Oval Office.

Our message: Don’t fall victim to complacency when faced with a seemingly unlikely conclusion.

If that comparison doesn’t hit close enough to home for you, the Illinois football team beat Michigan State on Saturday. Statistically speaking, a Trump win is possible.

And if sports are any indicator, it could become a reality.

If you want to use that as encouragement for your exam you’re not prepared for this week, go for it. But we’re going to use it to scare you a little bit.

As stated in our endorsement, The Daily Illini Editorial Board is with Hillary Clinton. We know that most of our campus is too; however, we know that some of you aren’t.

No matter what your political affiliation, we want you to vote.

Whether you’re a Clinton or Trump supporter, even if you’re a Gary Johnson or Jill Stein fan, make time to vote. We know you know how important it is, so just do it.

That being said, we’re going to double down on our endorsement of Clinton. We wholeheartedly believe that Trump is unfit to be president.

Clinton is no longer a shoo-in. She may be leading in the polls, but not by much, and polls aren’t a perfect indicator of an entire nation.

So please don’t say that your vote doesn’t count. Don’t say that you don’t have time to vote or that you forgot. Know your worth and make it a priority to cast your ballot.

If you were “Feeling the Bern” and felt your soul crushed when Bernie didn’t win the nomination, that’s too bad — but you should still vote, even if it’s not for the presidency.

And vote with some common sense, please. Voting for a candidate whose views you don’t understand or don’t believe in just to protest Sanders’ loss is irresponsible.

Sanders has even said so himself.

And this should be a reminder that one presidential term is as long as the typical college career. If you’re a senior, think about who you were four years ago and how much has changed. It truly isn’t that hard: make a plan to vote, start your day with a positive attitude and bring an umbrella just in case.

Four years is too long for our nation to be stuck with a monster in the Oval Office because you didn’t vote.

ou’ve probably replayed this clip plenty of times: Kris Bryant fields a ground ball, throws to first base, falls to his knees and rejoices in one fluid motion as he initiates the last out to secure a World Series victory. He’s giggling the whole time.

Cue the waterworks.

After blowing their lead, the Chicago Cubs almost saw their chance of making history slip away Wednesday night. That was until the rain delay.

With just 17 minutes to get the team back on its feet, Jason Heyward led the locker room speech before the game went into extra innings. Given his performance at the plate all season, he seemed to be an unlikely player to rally the team to victory. But with his emotional speech, Heyward proved just how important vulnerability is.

“I just wanted them to … know how proud of them I was and that I loved them.

That I mean it from the bottom of my heart,” said Heyward.

In most situations, exhibiting this kind of vulnerability is thought of as a weakness. A group of grown men huddled in a small room professing their emotions would give Ron Swanson a heart attack.

In many sports, the only emotion you’ll see from players is anger. In fact, a study published in “Gender, Work and Organization” found that “male-dominated, higher status jobs are characterized by masculine qualities … including a masculine emotional style,” typically anger or frustration.

But real change happens when you let your guard down. Many times, people hide their emotions in fear

The emotions turn into stress, which is then exhibited as anger, which quickly escalates to violence.

Crying or releasing emotion is productive, healthy and totally normal, according to psychiatrist Dr. Judith Orloff.

“Tears are your body’s release valve for stress, sadness, grief, anxiety and frustration,” said Orloff.

We can all learn something from Heyward’s emotional speech during arguably the most stressful game the Cubs will ever play.

No matter what our goal, reaching it can be a frustrating and difficult process.

We may never experience the stress of being down 3-1 in the World Series, but Heyward’s ability to collectively gather his team’s emotions and make the best of high tensions can translate into our everyday lives.

Heyward’s speech also demonstrates a part

of sports that can be controversial.

“I just wanted them to remember how good they were,” he said. “How good we are.” He reminded the Cubs why they are the best team in baseball.

Some may call them cocky or arrogant, but being aware of your own abilities is hardly a crime.

In this society, we are expected to be humble, to downplay our strengths.

If we take pride in our work, we do so at the risk of sounding presumptuous. We don’t want people to think that we think we’re better than anybody else, so we keep quiet instead.

But reminding yourself that you’re good at what you do — maybe even the best — is not harmful. Heyward was not shy about reminding his teammates of their skills, and it didn’t go to anybody’s head.

The Cubs demonstrated the line between LeBron James-type hubris and a reasonable recognition of exceptional abilities; not

only self-confidence, but a self-awareness that is essential in all aspects of life.

For college students in classes where our scores, grades and abilities are constantly weighed against those of our peers, it’s hard to keep this mindset, especially knowing that the competition doesn’t end when we’re handed our diplomas.

But the Cubs, a team whose abilities are boiled down to numbers, scores, averages, etc., demonstrated the importance of not losing sight of their strengths, even while playing a sport where randomness can trump ability.

On top of that, the odds were against them for 108 years. These players joined a team that was expected to lose time and time again, and they prevailed — we can learn a thing or two from them.

Students should keep local shootings in perspective LEAH PEARLMAN Opinions columnist

T

he Chicago Cubs were up to bat Wednesday, when I looked down at my phone and saw a notification. It read that there had been a shooting on Green Street and students should “avoid (the) area.”

In the seconds after, I realized what the Illini Alert said, and I did not react in a very emotional way; personally, the alert didn’t cause me too much distress.

After a few more moments, I decided to text my friends who I knew were out on Green Street and let them know to be careful.

Otherwise, this moment was nothing more than simply frustrating. Another friend of mine, however, wrote in a group text to my friends that she was “in tears” and horrified at our campus safety.

Her sheer horror over a single incident on our campus astonished me and honestly seemed silly.

If you turn on any news channel at any time, besides when the Today show features Kathie Lee and Hoda, you will see pain and suffering going on

across the entire planet.

ISIS is conquering and butchering its way across Iraq and Syria, planes literally fall out of the sky, civilians are killed in massive numbers in the Israel-Gaza conflict, the racial bias involved in police violence in America is exhaustingly high, natural disasters are unending, people are dying from a new mutation in the Ebola virus in West Africa and the list goes on.

This list is actually continuous, and those who actually pay attention know that the world around us is always pretty horrifying.

Now don’t get me wrong — I am not a pessimist who believes our world is falling apart, although it sure seems like it at times.

Crying over all of these incidents would be firstly impossible, and secondly make you a complete nuisance to society. You can’t function and help the world be a better place if you can’t even handle the daily horrifying events that go on around us.

The difference between what we hear on the news and what we receive in a message on our phones is that we aren’t directly affected by them in any way.

A lot of students of this campus come from very crime-controlled neigh-

borhoods and hometowns.

However, Big Ten college campuses are a large assemblage of people from many different neighborhoods and backgrounds.

For some students, crime close to home may be very common, and for some it may be foreign.

In either case, similar events to those that happen “out there in the world” do happen at the University, whether you are used to it or not.

Police Chief Jeff Christensen automatically sends alert emails to students’ illinois.edu email accounts that usually inform us of crimes that have occurred in the campus area. From attempted robberies to aggravated battery, this campus is not free of crime in the slightest.

And as a student who likes to keep her email notifications low, I can attest to the number of messages I get with the subject reading “Campus Safety Notice,” of incidents that happen on this campus.

So, we have our own channel of news flowing through our emails every once in a while of crimes that take place closer to home.

And I can’t just cry every single time my phone bings with another sexual assault case report, or I

won’t be able to function.

There are bad people on this campus the same way there are bad people all over the world, and it is not worth your while to get exceptionally upset over certain events just because they are closer to home.

It isn’t good for your mental health, according to Dr. Graham Davey, a British psychologist who specializes in the psychological effects of media violence.

“In particular ... negative news can affect your own personal worries,” said Davey to the Huffington Post. “Viewing negative news means that you’re likely to see your own personal worries as more threatening and severe.”

He went on to say that how you interact with the news can affect the way you act with the world around you and may make you more anxious or sad.

Yes, it is awful that someone on this campus fired a gun on Green Street last Wednesday. It disgusts me just as much as it disgusted my friend. But getting too upset over every isolated incident only hurts your mental health in the long run.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

“Safe Roads” amendment must not pass Illinois, a once-proud state known for the late former President Lincoln, corn, gerrymandering and its “political boss” Michael Madigan, has planted a surprise in this fall’s voting ballot.

Not only will we all vote for who we think is the lesser of two evils in this election, we will also vote on the “Safe Roads Constitutional Amendment,” a farce in disguise designed by construction firms and the unions whose members

they employ.

Both being loyal donors to Illinois lawmakers, they would in fact grant themselves “constitutionally guaranteed dibs (on) state and local tax revenue,” as the Chicago Tribune’s Editorial Board so eloquently phrased.

On a first read, the proposed amendment might actually sound nice, but if you start thinking about the consequences it entails, the true nature of the amendment is unveiled.

In essence, the proposed amendment calls for making transport related revenues inseparable from transport related public investments.

Although there are arguments to be made for linking revenue and expenses, the state of Illinois unfortunately does not have enough budgetary leeway to make those arguments defendable.

Where now parts of the transportation fund, which is partially fueled by the gas tax, went to the general state budget, the amendment

would make that unconstitutional, thus restricting our virtually bankrupt state even more.

According to the News Gazette, one of the reasons why the public universities are funded for this fall semester is because last summer state officials reallocated $500 million from the transportation fund to the general fund. The shortterm budget we currently have is a good example of the dire financial situation of the state.

This, combined with the pension crisis which is bound to only get worse given our aging population, and you can see why the proposed amendment might not be the best idea out there.

At the end of the day, it’s a rather easy question: Would you rather fund the filling of potholes or stop public higher education from inevitably getting more expensive due to budgetary problems?

Regardless of the way this vote swings, it will set a precedent for the special

interests on the state level.

If this passes, the construction lobby has proven that constituents can be deceived with euphemistically phrased proposals and other lobby groups will probably try to plant something similar in the next ballot. If it fails, special interests might be more cautious and redirect their focus on fancy dinners with legislators once again.

Irwin Academic Center a second home to athletes

On the corner of Fourth Street and Armory Avenue is a large beige building with gray trim and arches lining the front porch.

While this building may look much like it’s home to a fraternity or sorority, it’s more of a second home to many student athletes.

The Irwin Academic Center used to be a fraternity house that was created in 1920. However, in 1997 the house was transformed into a place for student athletes to study, and in 2007 the house underwent a $4.6 million renovation which added individual study rooms, a computer lab and a presentation room.

Around 500 student athletes that compete in Division I athletics use the facility to study and keep up on their classes, said Marlon Dechausay, associate athletic director for academic services.

Some of the student athletes have required study halls that they must spend at the center. During their freshman year, athletes typically have to study eight to 10 hours per week there, and after that, their GPA determines the number of weekly study hours they need to complete per semester.

Aaron Jordan, sophomore in Media and men’s basketball player, said the basketball team does not have a specific amount of study hours

per week because its athletic schedule can get pretty hectic.

“It depends on when we are traveling, but we usually study there every day from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.,” Jordan said.

Jordan also said he meets with the academic counselors often. Jordan meets with a counselor twice a week in the morning but also likes to pop in to talk after classes just to check in.

“It’s kind of nice that (student athletes) know that there’s a place for them.”

Being a cinema studies major, Jordan is able to meet with one of the tutors in the College of Media in order to stay on top of his classes.

The center offers tutors for specific subjects as well as academic coaches that focus more on building the skills to become a successful student, like time management.

Zakary Gaylord, senior in AHS, tutors students in recreation, sports and tourism classes at the Irwin Academic Center where he can earn some extra money.

As for the specifics of tutoring, he said “tutoring is by appointment. Usually it’s one to two-hour-long appointments a week for me, but for engineering and science tutors, it’s more. Undergraduate tutors get paid $10 per hour, and graduate students get paid $12 per hour.”

Dechausay said over 100 appointments are made by students wanting to meet with an academic coach, so the tutoring is utilized quite a bit by the student athletes.

The tutors for students athletes are paid for by the athletic department, which has a budget allocated to ensure that the students are on top of their classes and successful in their academic career along with their sports careers.

“The athletes are serious about getting help, and it’s very helpful for them. People would be shocked at just how hectic their schedules are,” Gaylord said.

The Irwin Academic Center is exclusively committed to helping the student athletes succeed.

“Between practice and games and traveling and classes, I think it’s kind of nice that they know that there’s a place for them.”

Dechausay said. “They know they can always find place here to study and feel comfortable, like their home away from home.”

HumansofUIUC spreads diversity and inclusion awareness

The University is the largest university in Illinois, with about 44,880 students enrolled. There are a multitude of races and cultures represented in the student body, yet minority students can often be overlooked.

Last year, economics student Christelle Panumpabi took the initiative to start an Instagram page spotlighting the unique and valuable differences

in all people around campus. One short story at a time, Panumpabi alone has been able to promote inclusiveness and multicultural awareness for her followers on the page, similar to the page “Humans of New York.”

“I love being about to hear stories of where people come from and difference aspects that make them who they are. I love how diverse our university is and I wanted to be able to create a platform where

I could share this diversity with anyone and everyone through social media,” Panumpabi said.

That’s what HumansofUIUC is offering to its current 1,168 followers: Some insight into the accomplishments and struggles real humans face on a daily basis. It is also making followers more aware and understanding of others and increasing inclusiveness in society, where everyone is equal.

Madison Gillespie, an

advertising student who was interviewed by Panumpabi, said, “I just thought it was so cool the girl who interviewed me saw something in me that she thought was cool enough to talk to me about. It’s nice to be recognized.”

Humansof UIUC recognizes something in all kinds of people, showing the beauty that there is to each of them.

“I know about the Humans of New York, and I think this page is a great

idea because I like this movement. We are such a diverse campus, so it’s good that someone started it here as well,” Gillespie said.

In the future, Panumpabi plans to turn the page into a registered organization.

Panumpabi said she hopes the club will better both the diversity and inclusion on campus.

“I have thought of making HumansofUIUC a club on campus. We could possibly have photographers and editors and a team to go out

and find these cool stories,” Panumpabi said.

Panumpabi said the club would help capture the uniqueness of each person, and hopes the growth of diversity and inclusion will make the world a better place.

“Hopefully in the near future, something like this can actually happen on our campus,” Panumpabi said.

“But for the meantime, it’s really just me.”

Professor, researcher Klaus Schulten, 69, dies DAILY ILLINI STAFF REPORT

The late University professor Klaus Schulten researched how the HIV virus interacts in cells.

Klaus Schulten, a prominent University physics professor and researcher, passed away Oct. 31 at the age of 69 years.

Schulten received his Ph.D from Harvard University in chemical physics in 1974, after graduating from the University of Muenster in 1969 with a degree in physics. He had been working as part of University research and faculty member for almost 25 years.

He was a leader of bio-

physics and led the Theoretical and Computational Biophysics group. This group is comprised of about 30 students and postdoctoral professors who conducted seminal work in the area of molecular dynamic simulations and illuminating biological structures.

Not only did he make strides in the physics field, he also made numerous contributions to biology.

His research was focused on the supramolecular systems in the living cell, while

also making advances that include understanding animal vision, photosynthesis and force-generation in cells.

Schulten was a diverse professor that had created an impact in the scientific fields of chemistry, physics and biology. He paired this knowledge with a strong knowledge of computers.

Juan Perilla, a postdoctoral research associate, worked closely with Schulten at the University. Perilla described Schulten as “a

very wise man” who was his “mentor” and “advisor.”

“He was very supportive,” Perilla said. “He allowed me to explore my curiosity.”

Schulten’s memorial service will be held at St. John’s Catholic Newman Center at 604 E. Armory Ave. and Sixth Street, Champaign on Monday at 10 a.m. A reception will immediately follow.

Beckman Institute of Technology will host an honorary symposium in 2017.

rinning from cheek to cheek and stepping foot on a campus he has not returned to in over 40 years, Michael Peterson recounted what it was like to be a black student at the University in the 1970s.

Amid outward displays of discrimination and an unwelcoming environment, the alum said he values what he learned and the moments of hardship that ultimately made him stronger. The experiences of discrimination inspired Peterson to raise minority student involvement in the engineering field.

A graduate from the civil engineering program in 1974, Peterson returned to campus this past week to revisit his time at the University. In preparation for his trip, Peterson worked to schedule meetings with current staff members in the College of Engineering and a past mentor who helped shape who he is today.

During his time as a student, Peterson said he had trouble connecting with other students and faculty members in the engineering program until he met former

School district, Rosado said the hope is for younger generations to become more educated about options they may have in the future.

“I would still consider the program to be successful even if the students decide to go elsewhere. If they go to college regardless, that’s a success for me,” Rosado said.

Looking outside of just working in the engineering field, Peterson said a new focus of his is to gain more involvement from people who have been historically marginalized.

A current goal of Peterson’s is creating an estimating company, which determines the cost of a project, so students can look at the process of engineering from multiple perspectives. His intent is to expose students to various construction trades and engineering professions.

The momentum from his time at the University and his life in the engineering field have welcomed Peterson into the next chapter of his life, one where he is choosing to lead the way for other minority students on the prospect of beginning a college education.

“I’m on a technical track of being an engineer, but I also am on this other track of wanting to end human suffering where I see it,” Peterson said.

Mays the latest Illini to step up and lead the team

Although former Illini Geronimo Allison set himself apart as the leader of the Illinois receiving corps last season, some of his teammates still had trouble telling the 6-foot3 pass-catcher apart from someone else.

“Last year during camp, we always had to see who it was and look closely,” said sophomore receiver Desmond Cain.

A nother 6 - fo o t- 3 , 200 -pound receiver by the name of Sam Mays brought fl ashbacks of Allison’s playmaking abilities Saturday, and it wasn’t just because of the similar lanky frame and athletic prowess.

With just over a minute remaining in Saturday’s game against Michigan State and Illinois trailing by three, Mays hauled in the game-winning score on a 16-yard pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Jeff George Jr., reminding fans and play-

ers of Allison’s famous Nebraska catch from a year ago.

It was Mays’ fourth catch of the day and just the 16th of his young career.

“I defi nitely got mobbed,” Mays said. “Everyone was just congratulating me. These guys know how much potential and ability I have and they were just happy I got that moment.

I was happy for myself as well.”

Even though Mays’ physical liking to Allison hasn’t matched the now-Packer’s production, the sophomore knew a more prominent role waited for him.

The Texas native was yards away when Malik T urner crumpled to ground after a hard hit to the helmet during last week’s loss to Minnesota, leaving a void in the receiving corp.

Mays was confident he could fi ll the playmaking void, though, and made sure his quarterback knew so.

“I told him before the

game, ‘I got you,’” Mays said. “We’ve got each other’s backs, we trust each other.”

George returned the same sentiment when the two hooked up for what turned out to be the gamewinning score late in the 31-27 victory over the Spartans.

Mays has been waiting to seize a big moment for the past two seasons, and when that ball spiraled toward him in the end zone on Saturday he knew all his hard work would result in a celebration at the end of the game in the north end of Zuppke Field.

“I was like, ‘Oh, man, I need to make this play,’” Mays said. “I made it and I was happy to do that for the team.”

On the same drive, Mays forced a pass interference call that brought Illinois past midfield. He hauled in four passes for 39 yards, both team-highs and career-highs. The game-

1. Michigan (2) — The Wolverines are one of the most dominate teams in the Big Ten and in the country. And they have no blemishes on their record unlike Ohio State. The Wolverines are winning their games by an average of over 37 points per game. Nobody will come close until the last game against Ohio State.

2. Ohio State (2) — Ohio State lost to Penn State on a field goal, ruining the Buckeyes’ perfect season. But they aren’t rolling over, and they showed that against Nebraska. After a close game with Northwestern, they crushed the Cornhuskers by 59 points, reminding everyone that the Buckeyes are still an alpha dog.

The offense still struggled, not putting any yards on the board until late in the second half. Kendrick Foster was the highlight and Jeff George Jr. didn’t get anything going until his final drive of the game.

But better late than never; he at least demonstrated composure in the moments that mattered most. On Illinois’ last scoring drive, George threw for every play minus one rush from Foster.

On the other hand, the

defense was impressive given the time of possession. Michigan State had the ball for 41 minutes compared to Illinois’ 18.

The Illini defense was tired but stopped the Spartans in their crucial last minute drive.

My dad got the Illini win, and I got my game with my dad.

From him screwing up card stunts to singing “Hail to the Orange” at the half and after the win, I felt like the typical college student for once.

Three years after I

started going to games, it’s weird to think this is my last year as a student.

Because I’ve covered the team for so long, I don’t really feel like a real fan anymore.

And the next time I’m in the stands, singing along to “Hail to the Orange,” I’ll have graduated and maybe Illinois will have a win against a team that matters.

Illinois’ Tatya na McFadden won yet another New York City Marathon in the women’s wheelchair race Sunday morning.

It is her four thconsecutive title in the four major races, and she fi nished in one hour, 47 minutes and 43 seconds.

She completed the Grand Slam by winning in London, Boston, Chicago and New York.

McFadden won her fi rst major marathon in Chicago in 2009. She became the fi rst athlete — able-bodied

or otherwise — to win all four major marathons in the same year in 2013. She repeated the task in 2014 and 2015.

McFadden was coming off an impressive performance at the Rio Paralympics, where she fi nished with six medals — with four gold and two silver. She now has 17 medals as a five-time U.S. Paralympian in track and Nordic skiing.

It’s been over a year since former Illinois head coach Tim Beckman was fi red, but the University is still dealing with repercussions.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that former Illinois offensive lineman Anthony Durkin filed a lawsuit against the University, Beckman and former athletic director Mike Thomas on Friday. The suit claims that Beckman forced Durkin to return early from a shoulder injury that he suffered in his sophomore season in 2013.

sat in the stands of Memorial Stadium for the first time since my freshman year on Saturday, watching Illinois football.

I went to every game my first year, but my dad couldn’t make it down for that Dad’s Day weekend.

After that, he’d come down, but I’d be up reporting in the pressbox, only seeing him at the half, then maybe dinner after the game and before he went home.

This year, however, we both sat together in the student section, me struggling to cheer for a team that I’ve been unbiased for and him shouting loudly as if players and coaches could hear him.

It’s just like when I’m home watching games with him before I came to school. Him, loud as he could be, and me, slightly embarrassed to the point where I joked I’d get him a referee jersey for Christmas.

I could understand his frustration, but this is a team I’ve been closely following for three years, and every time Illinois screwed up, I wasn’t surprised.

3. Wisconsin (3) — Wisconsin stayed steady, and now that Nebraska has fallen even with them in the standings, the Badgers can take their rightful place as the top team in the Big Ten West. The Badgers should cruise to the end of the season, and since they already beat the Cornhuskers, they own the tiebreaker if both teams were to end the season with two losses.

4. Penn State (6) — Some could not understand how Penn State was ranked so high (No. 12) in the playoff rankings this week. They beat Ohio State, but a bad loss to Pittsburgh early in the season makes them a little hard to stand behind. They proved those feelings wrong by trouncing an underperforming Iowa team.

5. Nebraska (4) — The Cornhuskers got completely embarrassed in Columbus this weekend. They once had a two-game lead in the Big Ten West and are now clinging for life after a two-game losing streak.

What was once a magical season for the Cornhuskers might end in a second-place finish.

6. Minnesota (7) — The Golden Gophers are tied for first in the Big Ten West, but do not have the strength to compare to both Nebraska and Wisconsin. They play both these teams over the next three weeks, so they will have a good measuring stick to see exactly how good they are.

7. Indiana (9) — Indiana has just been there all season. The Hoosiers are the definition of a middleof-the-pack team. They are not picking up any bad losses and are not picking up any big wins. They are sitting in the middle of the Big Ten, and that is where they will finish.

8. Northwestern (5) — The Wildcats have had a rough two weeks. They had to play two top teams in the Big Ten back-to-back right as the Wildcats were on a three-game winning streak. They have threestraight winnable games to close the season, and should be bowl-eligible by the end of it.

9. Iowa (8) — Iowa is the definition of an underperformer. The Hawkeyes got smacked by Penn State. sitting at 5-4. There were debates about this team making the college football playoff last season, and now, they are struggling through the Big Ten. 10. Maryland (10) — After a promising season start, Maryland did not live up to expectations in the Big Ten slate. They were humiliated by Michigan and sit at 2-4 in the Big Ten East. If it weren’t for Michigan State and Rutgers, they would be in the basement.

11. Purdue (12) — Purdue took another loss to Minnesota this week. They are now 3-6 in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers are on a four-game losing streak, but they beat Illinois, which gives them the spot above the Illini despite the worse record.

12. Illinois (13) — Illinois beat Michigan State, a team that was ranked No. 12 in the preseason but is currently on a six-game losing streak. The Illini have had a rough season, but this was a bright spot for them.

The Illini needs to win out to make a bowl game, and that just isn’t likely with the amount of injuries and struggles they have had this season.

13. Michigan State (11) — Michigan State is just bad.

For weeks people have been wondering what is going on with them, but the answer is simple: The Spartans are bad. They get Rutgers next week, so they should be getting their first — and likely only — Big Ten win of the season, but the loss at Illinois seals it: Michigan State is bad.

14. Rutgers (14) — The only team worse than Michigan State. The Scarlet Knights keep putting up some good fights, but they can never get it done. They will likely end their season without a Big Ten win, and it should come as no surprise. Rutgers is a long way away from being relevant in the Big Ten.

Five straight three-and-outs to kick off the game cannot go without being penalized. Sans its initial five drives, the Illini offense piled up 309 yards on 38 plays, including a 75-yard touchdown drive to retake the lead within the final two minutes of the game. Junior Kendrick Foster shouldered the load with 150 total yards and two game-breaking touchdown runs — the first a 15-yard rush that dragged multiple Spartans into the end zone as well, and the second a 64-yard dash to give Illinois its second lead of the day. Quarterback Jeff George had his best game of the season with 140 yards and a career-high two touchdown passes. With an offense trotting out its third-string quarterback and missing its leading receiver, offensive coordinator Garrick McGee certainly “coached his butt off,” as head coach Lovie Smith put it following the game.

Kicker Chase McLaughlin remains perfect on the season in extra-point tries and nailed a 42-yard field goal to pad a third-quarter Illini lead. Punter Ryan Frain punted seven times and did his best to pin the Spartans deep while the Illinois offense struggled early on. The Illini allowed two 20-yard kick returns, but Foster had an exciting 24-yard return of his own.

It took five drives to figure out, but McGee and the offensive staff finally pushed the right buttons to get Foster, George and the depleted offense some momentum heading into the second half. A gusty play-action call on third-and-one on the goal line that led to a wideopen Ainslie Johnson score was the highlight. With the Spartans facing fourth down in the red zone and the game on the line, Smith burned three timeouts in a row to either hype up his defense or faze the Michigan State offense. Either way, it worked, and Smith secured his first home Big Ten win in front of a packed crowd during Dad’s Weekend.

The biggest difference may have came days before the win, though, when the entire team went to see “Hacksaw Ridge,” which came up multiple times during postgame interviews as a source of motivation. Anything to motivate the troops, right?

Top to bottom, this was Illinois’ best defensive performance this year. The reason the Illini weren’t down by multiple scores after its slow offensive start was the defense’s ability to hold Michigan State to two field goals on five drives that all ended in Illinois territory. The reason Illinois was able to keep its 31-27 lead was a huge defensive stop on fourth-and-six in the waning seconds.

Illini given a reason to celebrate after win

A certain behind-thescenes chemistry had been building between Mays and George from their large amount of practice reps as backup players.

And when the time to show off their connection came, the result was the

“Me being the thirdstring guy to start the year, and Sam not getting all the reps, we defi nitely had that chemistry going in practice,” George said.

“It’s a cool thing to see when two guys working hard get their opportunity.

I have all the confidence in Sam and I think he has all the confidence in me.”

Saturday was just the fourth game Mays participated in so far this

season. He played in four games all of last season and never totaled more than two catches in a single game.

said. “When we changed his role and it was time for him to step up to the plate, he did.”

The I l li nois youth movement has firmly taken over the defense and Saturday marked its spread to the offense. Junior running back Kendrick Foster has become the elder statesman among the offense, and he called Saturday’s win a “springboard” for the future of the program.

When it came to trusting

in guys like Mays, Foster didn’t need to think twice.

“I knew he was good since day one,” Foster said.

“His frame’s great and his physical attributes are off the charts. I expected Sam to make a play and I’m so happy for him just to step up when he got the opportunity.”

For the second straight week, senior quarterback Wes Lunt dressed but did not see any action in place of George, and it’s unclear when Turner will return.

Now in what Smith has called the fourth quarter of the season, George and Mays could have ample opportunities to keep proving their chemistry.

“Me and Jeff have always been clicking, we’ve always had chemistry,” Mays said. “Not that I haven’t had it with anybody else, but when the opportunity presents itself, you’ve just got to make the most of it.”

Rice returns to court after injury

Illinois drops home exhibition to Division II Drury University

A lot has changed since the Illinois women’s basketball team last played, and on Sunday, the team played its first exhibition game of the 2016-2017 season against Drury University.

The new-look Illini went back and forth against their Division II opponent all game long before squandering away a fourth quarter lead. The Panthers went on to win 66-60 behind 24 points and six threepointers from senior Paige Wilson.

“They ran a couple of good sets early, and we got a little bit lost,” head coach Matt Bollant said.

“I thought we played hard, but at times, we got lost in our rotations and didn’t do a good job of finding (Wilson). Her taking 11 threes is way too many threes, and most of them were pretty good looks.”

One year ago, center Chatrice White was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Illini, and although she was the marquee player on his squad last year, Bol-

lant had a different former player cross his mind following the loss.

“I think especially we missed Kylee (Simmons’) poise today at the point and (her ability) to knock down big shots,” Bollant said. “Someone else is going to have to step up and be able to do that, and obviously we didn’t have that in the fourth. We have to find who’s going to step up and make shots when the game’s on the line.”

This year’s squad features six new players, including forward Ali Andrews and guard Brandi Beasley, who both started for the Illini.

On the first play of the game, Beasley drove the ball hard to the basket and layed it in. The Memphis-native had plenty of family and friends at the State Farm Center to cheer her on, and after scoring her first collegiate bucket, there was an uproar from her cheering section.

Beasley showed that she could handle the ball, often breaking Drury’s press by herself and displayed flash-

es of being a strong onball defender. In the third quarter, she stole the ball from Drury’s Heather Harman near half court and coasted in for the lay-up.

Illinois’ guard finished with 10 points and four assists.

“I was kind of nervous to start off,” Beasley said. “But my teammates did a good job of making me feel comfortable. I think I did pretty good overall. I think we did decent as a team. I think this was a good loss for us to figure out the things we need to work on and get better on later in the season.”

Sophomore forward Alex Wittinger, who recorded a double-double, took only two shot attempts in the fourth quarter and missed both. She shot 5-of-14 from the field overall for 15 points, fouling out with 1:29 remaining in the game.

“I’m trying not to dwell on (the missed shots) because if you dwell on it, you turn inward,” Wittinger said.

“Our biggest thing we need to work on is our defense and just our talk with switching screens and knowing our scouting report. We know what we have to do. We just have to do it.”

Many reporters flooded over to the men’s practice at Ubben Basketball Complex to see John Groce’s squad, but on the other side of the facility, the Illini women prepare to take the floor. There’s less coverage and fewer questions, but the media attention doesn’t matter to sophomore Cierra Rice.

It was Illinois basketball media day in early October.

Donning a blue practice jersey, the guard grabbed a basketball off of a rack and prepares for practice.

She’s only been back for a few weeks.

“I’m just really excited. I don’t even know how to explain it. I’m just happy,” Rice said.

As a freshman, Rice started and played in 10 games for the Illini before a knee injury cut the rest of her debut campaign short.

Rice was sidelined for the remainder of the season — a total of 20 games — and it took several months of rehab for her to return fully healthy. Since her injury was so early during her freshman year, she still hasn’t played in a conference game.

“Hopefully, this year I can finally play in the Big Ten which I’ve always dreamed of when I was a kid,” Rice said.

During her time off, Rice said her parents were the main people she leaned on for support, and she said that the injury gave her a new perspective on the game she loves.

“That was my first really serious injury,” Rice said. “I’d never been out for a significant amount of time like that before, so it was definitely difficult. It was a very tough time for me at the moment, but it helped me really appreciate the game. It can be taken away from you at any moment.”

Head coach Matt Bollant said that Rice’s return will certainly help his team, but mentioned that her conditioning is one of the few things that still has to improve post-injury.

“It took a while (to come back),” Bollant said. “We took it slow and obviously knowing that she’s got a bright future in front of her, I think that injury last year really took a toll. She was averaging 14 (points) a game, shooting over 50 percent from the field, and I think we’re seeing flashes of that.”

Rice mentioned that she spent the offseason expanding her game.

Illinois’ guard said she attacked the basket a lot last year but has expanded her range by working on her pull-up jumper.

The Michigan native has already had a few notable performances in her collegiate career, including being named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. She recorded two 20-point games — against UT-Martin and Miami —and will look to add to that total this season.

Aside from how Rice’s game has changed, the landscape of the Illini is significantly different than when she last played. Illinois’ leading scorer and rebounder from a year ago Chatrice White, or as her former teammates call her, “Tree,” transferred to Florida State.

The move not only left a hole in Illinois’ frontcourt, but it also affected Rice on a more personal level.

“She’s still one of my best friends,” Rice said. “I still talk to her like every day. I’m definitely going to cheer her on and hope that she does well this season. I definitely think that a lot of people are going to have to step up in order to fill that gap.”

Dad’s weekend helps Illinois break five game losing streak

Head coach Nick Fabbrini thought this weekend was a milestone for his program.

For the first time in the program’s history, the Illinois hockey team had its Friday game versus Illinois State broadcast on ESPN3.

The Illini joined Ohio and Iowa State as the only teams in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League to be featured on the national broadcast this season, something head coach Nick Fabbrini saw as a a milestone for the program.

“It was really exciting and a big step for the program and ACHA as a whole,” Fabbrini said. “Anytime you get national exposure for a great level of hockey it’s a great thing. I don’t know the ratings, but I feel that they did pretty well for having a big name school and we were honored to be a part of it.”

Illinois won the first of a two-game set 4-1, scoring the final four goals of the contest after ISU scored first. The win ended a fivegame skid for the Illini, giving them a much needed confidence boost early in the season.

Defense was the key to the first game, as the Redbirds didn’t muster double-digit shots on goal in any of the periods, finishing with only 14 on the entire game.

“It definitely played a part,” Fabbrini said. “Anytime the building is full like that, the turnout is always great and we always appreciate the support. The players were really excited to see some of their family members in the stands.”

The team dismantled Illinois State by a score of 11-0 Saturday night.

One of the highlights from the victory was a hat-trick from freshman Luke Forfar, who got his third goal with

The three-time national champions will be looking to bounce back after being shut out in both of its past two games.

Fabbrini said the trip will allow him to gauge where his team is compared to some of the best in the country.

“They are two of the best teams in the country, and it will be a big key for us,” Fabbrini said. “Good teams make you pay when you make mistakes so we have to limit those in order to have a successful trip.” dapena2@dailyillini.com

After suffering its first loss of the year last week, the Illinois swim and dive team bounced back with a powerful performance in Terra Haute, Indiana, coming out with an 184-77 victory.

Serniute was the second swimmer for Illinois in the 400-yard medley relay — Stratford’s normal position — and helped lead the Illini to a first place finish in the event with a time of 3:55.34.

“I wanted them to have the opportunity to really step up and help the team,” Novitsky said. “It was a great experience for them and was great to see after a hard week’s worth of practice.”

The Lithuanian native also placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard butterfly events with times of 1:06.13 and 58.59.

Freshman Emily Martin took her first victory of her collegiate career in the 1000yard freestyle event with a time of 10:33.74. Fellow freshman Monica Guyett, who has been the Illini’s go-to swimmer in the event, did not partake in the event.

Familiar faces for the Illini continued their strong start to the season: Seniors Audrey Rodawig and Amelia Schillings placed first in a combined four events. Junior Ashley Aegerter finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke and butterfly with times of 2:22.09 and 2.09.48.

UNDERSTAND THE CONSEQUENCES. There is a $183,000,000 Bond Request on the ballot for local Champaign Grade and High Schools.

A Yes vote means much higher property taxes.

HIGHER TAXES means much HIGHER APARTMENT RENTS.* ***************** A NO VOTE will tell the local

Champaign School Board to adjust future bond requests to fund Grade & High School Improvements with smaller amounts over a multi-year schedule.

Not all at once.

Local school improvements are fine, and smaller tax increases over an extended time allows property owners to plan and adjust expenses to keep apartment rents stable.
