any aspects of college take some time to get used to. For many, it’s the fi rst time away from home with a roommate.

New students, especially freshmen, have to learn to budget their time now that their schedule is left entirely up to them.

One of the biggest adjustments that most students need to make is dealing with the size of some of their classes.

Most are not used to having more than 30 to 40 people in one class, but that will change when you walk into ECON 102 or STAT 100. Some general education classes consist of anywhere from 300 to 700 students.

Daunting as it may seem, this will eventually become commonplace.

By the time midterms roll around, strolling into your 9 a.m. ECON lecture won’t phase you a bit (that is if you can wake up in time). Here are a few tips that will help you get off to the right start in your large lectures.

Sit wherever works best for you Coming into my freshman year, I had multi-

ple professors and students tell me that to get the most out of huge lectures, I had to sit in the front. They said that if I sat in the front, I'd be able to focus on what the professor was saying without being distracted by a sea of students talking and surfi ng the internet in front of me.

This lasted about a week.

I quickly found out that sitting in the very front of a giant lecture hall isn’t the best way for me to learn. Seeing as most lectures consist of the professor going over slides on a large screen in the front of the room, my neck was sore by the third day of class from looking straight up all the time. It was also hard to see the information as a whole on the screen.

I eventually moved around until I found a spot where I could focus without wandering off.

Personally, I like sitting in the back half of the room, but not all the way back.

You may fi nd that sitting in the front works for you, or that sitting in the very back makes you feel more comfortable and ready to take notes. No one is going to judge you for where you sit, so make sure to fi nd a spot where you’ll pay attention.

Make friends with those who consistently sit near you.

One thing that you’ll notice as the fi rst few weeks of classes progress is that most students will sit in the same seat each time.

There will be the occasional period where someone sits in your seat–these people are the worst. You know it’s your seat. The people who sit near you every class period know it’s your seat.

Then you’re forced to move and possibly take someone else’s seat, creating a vicious cycle that throws off the entire balance of the lecture hall.

However, once you’ve established your seat, it’s important to get to know the people who sit near you every class period.

They will become your lifeline in case you miss a lecture or need someone to study with for the midterm. In such large lectures, it’s critical to have a small group of students in the class with whom you can go over the material.

And who knows, you might just meet your best friend for the next four years in the back of STAT 100.

Summarize Notes Knowing how to summarize notes is easily

the most valuable skill I learned freshman year.

Coming into college, I knew how to take notes, but not effectively. I got by the fi rst few weeks of school by simply typing down what the professor put up on slides verbatim.

When midterms rolled around, I realized I hadn’t been retaining any of the information that I had so diligently written down every class. That’s when a friend told me to start summarizing my notes.

For me, I found that summing up information on the spot was too much, especially when professors seem to think that the class can retain an entire slide’s worth of information in three and a half seconds. Instead, I wrote down the information verbatim during class, and then I would go back after class and jot down a one to two sentence summary of each slide at the bottom.

This not only got me thinking about the material on a deeper level, but by reading through my notes following the lecture, I retained more of the information and even did some proactive studying. It doesn’t take more than 10 minutes to do, and you will clearly see the benefits when test time comes.

I were allowed only to give one piece of advice to incoming freshmen, it would be to network. I don’t know how much to stress the importance of networking. This is college. Yes, we’re here to achieve our future goals and career aspirations by obtaining high GPA’s and receiving our bachelor’s or master’s degree, but we’re also here for other important reasons.

We’re here to find our life-long friends and partners, to connect with as many people as we can to increase our network capacity.

What I’ve learned from college is that having connections and good relationships with people is just as important or maybe even more important than getting good grades. Having a lot of people in your network is never a bad thing.

You never know who you’ll meet; that person could be your future business partner, your employer or someone that helps you get hired for your dream job or internship. That’s why you should never leave a bad impression with anyone you meet in college. Be nice to everyone you meet.

Help people out whenever you can. Make friends. Be social.

Drop that homework assignment and go out with your friends to a social event. Join extra-curricular activities that will benefit your career and network.

From my personal experience, becoming close friends with people in my major has been so beneficial. They can help with picking classes and professors, give advice when applying for internships, assist with homework

assignments and we get through the stress together.

Having good relationships with professors is also very important. When you’re applying for internships, you might need recommendation letters so don’t sit all the way in the back in class and never say a word. Say hello to your professors every time you see them in the hallway. Go to office hours, even if it’s just to introduce yourself.

I’m not saying that GPA is not important because it is, especially if you’re planning to apply for graduate school. The key idea is that GPA is not the most important aspect of your resume.

If you have a resume with a 4.0 GPA, and that’s the best thing about your resume, then that’s a problem. Employers want an active participant of the community. That means they want someone that participated in more than one extra-curricular activity, someone that’s passionate and has ambition and has a fairly good GPA, but they’ll understand if you don’t have a great GPA and were highly involved in college.

But don’t get me wrong.

If you have a good GPA and a lot of experience and still don’t get hired, then that’s okay. Employers aren’t just looking for a perfect candidate with a good GPA and an impressive experience section on their resume, they’re looking for someone that they think will fit in their company and will work well in their environment.

It could be that they think your personality won’t fit and that might be a good thing. You want to work somewhere where you’ll thrive and your personality is a good match with the people you work with.

rriving on a large campus like Illinois as a new student can be scary and overwhelming. Some people will try and make a large school sound like a bad thing, and say that there is no way that each student will get individual help with school work, studying, mental health and support. They will say that a student who prefers to have someone look over their papers, and help them study will not be able to succeed fully at a larger university.

This might seem like good advice to those types of students; however, this is not the case at Illinois.

This campus boasts a vast majority of helpful student study resources that surely did not exist in high school.

Each student can get the help they seek, whether it be from the writers workshop, counseling center, tutoring centers or advising services just to name a few.

The University is, of course, first and foremost a place to succeed academically. The Writers Workshop exists to help students

who may have to write a paper for class, or just need to tune up on their writing skills in general. It is located in the Undergraduate Library, and writing experts are available by appointment and are willing to read and re-word and give writing tips to improve it until the paper until it is perfect enough to turn in.

The University also offers tutoring services; each department has tutors who apply, and they are accepted based on how well they did in a problem class.

Athletes also have their own tutors, as well their own studying facility called the Irwin Center.

College advisors are also there to talk new students through classes, schedules, and even future job opportunities. Advisors are more than happy to help students and actually enjoy when students schedule appointments and take the time to know them.

Advisers are a pool of wealth and have seen many students go through similar classes and programs, so they have an abundance of wealth as well. Getting close to your advisor is one of the most beneficial steps a student can take to becoming successful in college.

For those students who are seeking other types of support, there are many health and wellness centers on campus as well. For anything from the common cold to getting the flu shot, The McKinley Health Center located on Lincoln Street in Urbana is always there to help. Make sure to get your free cold and flu packs each semester.

The Counseling Center, located on Green Street, is ready to help with any mental health needs. Mental health needs should not be ignored, and the Counseling Center has experts there who are trained to help college students who might be struggling. These services should be utilized because one cannot be a successful student if their health is failing them.

Services on campus are there to help further students in their education and success, and they should be utilized. New students who might be nervous coming to such a big campus can rest assure in the fact that everyone around them is working for them and with them to assure they can be as successful as possible.

How do I register for classes/adjust my schedule?

A couple of months before the start of each new semester, students are notified of their time slot for course registration. It’s important to meet with your advisor before your time slot to ask any questions you may have.

They’ll walk you through the process of registering online and help you feel comfortable navigating it on your own.

You’ll also talk about exactly what courses to take and what hours and workloads would be best suited for you in the upcoming semester.

Basic guidelines for good classroom ettiquette

tudy abroad is an experience unlike any other, clichĂŠ as that sounds. The chance to visit new places, get immersed in a different culture and practice a second language while earning class credit may seem like an obvious choice for some students.

However, with over 400 programs to choose from through the University’s study abroad office, it can be difficult for students to make that final choice.

For students who are unsure about study abroad or want a general overview of the programs, the study abroad office organizes in-person First Steps info sessions, which are held at 2 p.m. every Friday in room 101 of the International Studies Building during the school year.

The study abroad office is the best resource for program information and oneon-one advising. Walk-in advising is also available during the school year.

Visiting the study abroad office can be easier if the student does some independent research beforehand, however.

The first thing to consider is where to go. Programs are offered on six continents, so this choice is pretty personal. Students should think about where they most want to travel

or how comfortable they would be in an area where they may not speak the language fluently. Personally, I decided to study in Geneva, Switzerland, because it’s a French-speaking, centrally located country, which meant it was easy to travel to other countries (and I somewhat knew the native language).

Also, some programs are only offered during certain semesters. If traveling abroad for a semester seems too worrisome or expensive, plenty of options are also available for winter and summer programs.

If students have an idea of where and when they might want to go, a good place to start is study abroad’s advanced search page, which filters programs based on location, language requirement and academic area as well

as more specific parameters. This is a great option for students who are concerned about credits transferring. The University’s study abroad page has a “suitcase,� which means students can save programs that interest them and compare them later.

This in-depth comparison includes projected costs, which can understandably be a deal breaker for many students. However, students who are concerned about costs shouldn’t necessarily give up hope of studying abroad. The University offers scholarships for specific colleges and the Illinois Study Abroad and International Programs and Studies scholarships that are open to all Illinois students. Students with financial aid packages can also talk to a financial aid advisor about how much their aid package will cover.

From there, the final decision depends on each student’s personal needs and interests. After a decision has been made, it is vital to keep up with application deadlines for the program as well as for any scholarships or other requirements. Taking care of all this can be a little stressful during the school year, but the final experience is completely worth it.

hen new students arrive on campus in the fall, they will have been going to class for more than half their lives. Sitting in a classroom might seem like a mechanical practice to them, so much so that they will be accustomed to being in that environment and might not give much thought into proper classroom etiquette. However, the actions of students in class can have a major impact on those sitting around them.

Skip class.

When students are exhausted, they may consider not going to class.

This behavior should be avoided if the reason for skipping class is pure laziness. Skipping class because you're sick is a completely different story. The reasons for never skipping class are simple.

When students skip class, they lose two important things: valuable information and money. Nothing is more important to students’ learning than being in class to absorb the information themselves. Relying on getting notes from others is not ideal. Whenever students feel tempted to not attend class, they should remind themselves that every lecture costs them money, so they are essentially throwing away money with every class they skip.

Arrive late.

Students should make every effort to arrive on time because arriving late can be disruptive, especially in quiet classrooms where opening a door can cause students to turn their heads toward that door. Sometimes arriving late is unavoidable if students have only ten min-

utes to cross the entire campus from one class to another. This situation is understandable, although students should have given that inconvenience more thought when creating their schedules. Getting to class thirty minutes late when the class has only fifty minutes is a terrible idea because students who arrive this late will miss most of the lecture.

Be disruptive.

This includes talking excessively to friends and eating entire meals in one class period. Basically, students should not do anything that could annoy others or take away their concentrations. In those cases, students should be careful not to make a lot of noise (and should check if they are allowed to eat in that classroom).

Surf the internet.

Students should not do this for their own benefit.

When students get online, they lose track of the lecture and do not absorb the information being presented. In addition, their computer screens can distract others, who will be tempted to look at what website they are browsing. To avoid this, students should turn off their internet access during class so as to not harm their learning.

Ask questions.

Whenever students feel confused in class, they should ask their professors questions to clear up that confusion. If they cannot bring themselves to ask a question during class because of being shy or embarrassed, students should always try to stick around after class to ask their professors directly. Getting questions answered will help students understand the material so that they can perform better on their exams.

Pay attention.

Going to class will be pointless if students do not pay attention to what their professors have to say.

Engaging in lectures is necessary for comprehension, so students should definitely listen in class.

E

arly morning in late August – the sun lethargically stretched from the silhouetted horizon and passive-aggressively nudged me to break out those running shoes and explore campus. Speaking candidly, sweat tends to run faster than I do, but I took advantage of a leisurely pace by expending more time and less energy to explore the CU-area as an incoming freshman.

Being the ravioli of a human being that I was freshmen year – seemingly put together on the outside and haphazardly filled with discombobulating anxiety on the inside – I decided that running would be the best way to learn the campus and adjoining towns whilst simultaneously calming my nerves.

Quickly, I realized that the area had a lot to offer in terms of modestly beautiful things to see. By running southeast of LAR in Urbana, you’ll run into the arboretum off of Lincoln Ave.; the layout and foliage is absolutely gorgeous in the fall and spring. It didn’t take long before that

scenic line had pushed its way up my list of favorite trails. The varying terrain and incline made for a lovely challenge, which acted as a replacement for my morning joe.

Another engaging trip through consisted of running into the heart of Urbana and even past it, to better familiarize with the area. Oftentimes, I left my dorm and headed north on Lincoln Ave. to One Apartments. Then, I’d loop back through Urbana’s contemporary downtown district to get a better picture the area which was – and still is – conducive to art aficionados, vegans, and coffeelovers' lifestyles alike.

As far as Champaign is concerned, I took my time to run through the downtown area which houses a plethora of restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and trinket shops that I went back to visit. However, one of my favorite routes was running up on Healey St. and through Scott Park. With a pond and a bridge, there wasn’t much else this firstyear who found herself surrounded by cornfields could ask for. Earnestly speaking, running through Scott Park during golden hour continues to crown itself as one of my preferred paths.

Of course, a great gen-

eral route is anywhere on campus. Overwhelming at first, the area rarely became stale and it was an excellent way to make our sizeable campus a little more manageable. A few notable things to look out for is the apartment on Green St. with a “xx.5” address, the Engineering Quad and north half of campus for those who want to appreciate great modern architecture and the Krannert Art Museum to get an off-campus feel while still staying on-campus. Also, bonus points for figuring out where the McKinley Health Center is. I realized on the way to the Arboretum that it is actually not the Church located west of Kam’s.

All in all, running was an enjoyable way for me to construct a mental map of the towns which would become my home for the next three and a half years.

Hopefully, you’ll find reap the same benefits of staying mentally and physically healthy, while concurrently learning the wonderful differences between Champaign and Urbana, and getting a feel for what the campus has to offer.

As

a college student, you are making an investment in yourself as you pay for your tuition. While this money goes to paying for professors' salaries and University upkeep, there is also a section of fees that are billed to students to provide additional services. Some of these fees are very small, only a few dollars per student, but provide major benefits when applied to the entire campus population. However, if you don't take advantage of these services, you are essentially wasting that money.

Every student pays a mandatory health services fee to give them access to McKinley Health Center and the Counseling Center. This is separate from the student health insurance fee and students cannot opt out of it. Students should take advantage of the many services provided by the professionals at these centers when they are having issues with their mental or physical health.

Another fee provides Registered Student Organizations with the funds necessary to hold events and recruit new members.

As a student, you can take advantage of this by joining campus RSOs and attending Quad Day to collect pens, t-shirts, lanyards and fris-

bees for free from various groups. Even after Welcome Week is over, freebies are still found. Organizations are willing to grill up hot dogs or pass out pizza just to spread their name. These events are easy to hear about from fliers posted around campus.

When the weather takes a turn for the worse or you are headed to the opposite side of campus, you will be happy that your fees also provide you with unlimited access to the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District. There are bus lines that run around campus, stopping at most of the major intersections, and lines that will take students off campus to both Champaign and Urbana. When you board a bus off campus, just show the driver your i-card and ride until you reach your destination.

In the real world, there's no such thing as a free lunch, but on campus, there are many events with free food provided. Every week during the semester, The Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations will host “Lunch on Us”. These events are held at one of the various cultural houses where they provide lunch and a lecture, so come with open ears and an empty belly. Many times the food will be authentic to the culture represented by the house and is a great way to expose yourself to new flavors.

The Illini Union Board is constantly hosting free events for students, includ-

ing movie nights, guest speakers and comedians.

One night each month the Illini Union Board hosts Illinites, which offers an alternative to common college nighttime practices. At Illinites, students can find free food, free entertainment, and free fun.

Students also pay a fee to give them access to campus recreation facilities. Physical health can be kept up on at the Activities and Recreation Center and Campus Recreation Center East. Students enter with an i-card and are granted free access to equipment, gymnasiums, and swimming pools. While taking exercise classes cost and additional fee, The University provides awesome academic services for free as well. Textbooks can be rented from libraries. Writer’s Workshops are available to get advice on essays. Media technologies, such as cameras, can be rented out. Plus, best of all, the campus wifi is accessible in all campus buildings with your University log-in and password.

With all of these free items and events to be found on campus, I encourage us to not lose sight of the most important freedom of all.

In college, you are free to be whoever you want; you are free to be YOU. So utilize that freedom and always stay true to yourself.

he recreational facilities at the University of Illinois represent an important part of campus life. I think that, more so than at most other schools, these facilities serve as a gathering ground for people to exercise, relax, and socialize. The two main recreational facilities are the Campus Recreation Center East (CRCE) and the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC).

Since the ARC happens to be one of the biggest recreational facilities in the country, one would expect that CRCE wouldn’t really have anything else to offer. However, they both offer different things and possess several differences, among them being their general location. This will ultimately serve as the main decision maker as to where one would choose to go work out or exercise.

Both facilities have an extensive assortment of exercise equipment and cardio machines. The ARC, of course, has a larger selection of equipment and a larger indoor running track: 1/5 of a mile as opposed to CRCE’s 1/8 of a mile track. The ARC has lots of cool amenities that would attract even students who live on the other side of campus.

They have a 35-foot climbing wall, two 50-foot swimming pools, a 35-person sauna, 12 racquetball courts, an instructional kitchen, a massage center, a café, twelve racquetball courts, four gymnasiums and nine multipurpose areas. CRCE does not have most of those things, but it does have an indoor field,

One of the big plusses about living in one of the Ikenberry Residence Halls is that you are so close to the ARC. When I was thinking about going for a workout at the ARC and I had time on my hands, it was difficult to come up with an excuse as to why I shouldn’t go because of its convenient location. It's located at the south end of the Ikenberry residence halls, just in front of Memorial Stadium.

CRCE is located next to Allen Hall and is just a

short walk from the quad.

I can only speak for the ARC since I didn’t exercise regularly at CRCE, but I could defi nitely tell that the ARC was the least busy at around noon and in the morning during the week. There are a lot of people who live around the ARC area so the workout rooms there can get pretty busy regardless of their large size.

If someone wanted to play basketball, the ARC would probably be the place to go. There are plenty of courts and there are always some people to pick up a game with. Later in the day, the basketball courts do tend to fill up so be prepared to wait for an open court or for the next game.

When it comes down to where someone would want to work out, it’s really just about which recreational facility is closer.

The ARC does have a lot more to offer, but CRCE has a great facility with all of the same essentials that the ARC has. No matter where you live, the buses drop off in front of both of the recreational centers so there really isn't much keeping someone from regularly going to both of them.

These are top-notch, allencompassing recreational facilities and one would be hard-pressed to not fi nd something for them.

hen I graduated from grade school in 2009 (yikes), I was terrified of losing touch with the seven best friends I’d spent the past ten years growing up with. Between the eight of us, we were going on to four different high schools, and I was certain that by the time I graduated, I would no longer have anyone to reminisce with about the joys (and many frustrations) of our time at Notre Dame School.

Boy was I wrong.

Now approaching my senior year of college, my grade school friends are still some of the most important people in my life. Making new friends and seeing each other less in high school didn’t mean there was no longer room or time in my life for old friends; when I left for college, I knew that keeping in touch with my preschool pals and high school buddies was a guarantee.

The start of your freshman year is full of fun experiences and new, interesting people. Often, it’s easy to let checking in on friends and family fall by the wayside when you’re balancing making new friends, going to class, joining new clubs and figuring out that darn bus system.

Make time.

I know, I know, some days you’ll feel like you barely have time to brush

your teeth–please, for everyone’s sake, make time for that–but prioritizing the people who stayed by you through your awkward phase or who may be footing the bill for your education (hint hint, Mom and Dad) will make you a happier person.

Your friends from home want to hear about what you’re up to, the new friends you’re making and the cute guy or girl in your CMN 101 class. Your mom wants to know that you’re eating enough, and your dad wants to make sure you know that you can’t date until you’re married.

If you have siblings — especially younger siblings — check in with them too.

Don’t just ask your parents for an update on the family; call or text them individually to stay clued in on everything they have going on. Your friends and family can’t go to college with you, but they want to feel a part of things, so keep them in the loop.

Fortunately, you don’t have to use a payphone like your parents did when

they were in college. This means you can call friends and family on your walk to class, or as you’re laying in bed looking for something watch on Netfl ix. Texting is an easy way to stay in touch, but sometimes it’s nice to hear a familiar voice or see a loved one’s face.

And when all else fails, encourage visits. If you’re from Illinois, chances are your family lives just a couple of hours away–invite them to take a day trip to campus, even just for lunch.

Most of my friends from home stayed in the Midwest for college, which means we’re all just a short drive away from each other. In October, my high school friends are planning to visit campus for the Illinois-Purdue football game.

Weekend trips are a great way to stay close to old friends and also give you the opportunity to meet your friends’ friends or introduce them to yours.

Be warned: staying in touch can be tough sometimes. You might play phone tag with your dad for a few days, and trying to fi nd a weekend that both you and your best friend are free might prove near impossible, but making the effort is crucial. Of course, you’ll go home for breaks and summers, so don’t fret about being gone for too long, but staying up-to-date throughout the year makes those breaks so much more exciting.

Obviously, you can’t major in “General Studies”. What’s going to happen when your relatives ask you what you’re majoring in during your time at college? The point I’m trying to make is that “General Studies” is a thinly veiled term to sugarcoat what we all know: You’re undeclared.

It’s okay, there’s nothing wrong with that. The University website says that “DGS is designed to help you explore the academic landscape at Illinois while keeping you on track for graduation ... incoming Illinois freshmen can apply to the University as undeclared.”

Basically, the school is letting you know that it’s totally okay if you are in DGS as an incoming freshman. It’s even okay to be admitted to it as a sophomore if for some reason you realize a little into your college career that you don’t want to major in Women’s Studies.

If you think about it, though, your friends who do have declared majors going into college are in a league all on their own.

They basically have decided on what they want to do at the ripe old age of 18 and are set on studying it for the next four years – we’re not even going to talk about graduate school – just so they can receive a paper from the University to show to prospective employers and convince them to take a chance on them because they’re scholars in this one subject.

Joke’s on them, though.

Basically, the school is letting you know that it’s ok if you are in DGS as an incoming freshman from the National Center for Education, around 80 percent of students will end up changing their major at least once in their college careers. If you are in DGS, the fi rst step is to recognize that you are technically not “behind” your friends who have actual majors.

You’ve got a lot of time to fi gure it out, that means you should go out and explore the different areas of interest at the University of Illinois. This is a world-renowned school.

There are one-of-a-kind

programs in countless colleges on campus, so make yourself at home. Take classes that interest you.

Sometimes one class or an interaction with a professor can inspire you to seek out further studies in that department.

Outside of class, get involved with organizations that are based around your hobbies or interests.

The University’s list of over 1,400 Registered Student Organizations guarantees there will be a group of people that share in your passions. These groups can provide valuable networks and experiences that will benefit you in the future, regardless of the major you end up choosing.

Before doing all of that, schedule an appointment to meet with a DGS advisor through the University of Illinois’ online appointment system.

These professionals are there to make sure you explore all of your interests while keeping you on track for graduation.

And if that’s not enough, the University also has a program where you can explore majors while traveling Costa Rica.

With all of this in mind, students entering the Division of General Studies should see it as a way to reach their full potential at the University, and not as a second-place fi nish behind all of their peers.

uilding your schedule for the first time as a freshman can be intimidating. No one is there to hold your hand and advice from counselors rarely help, but getting your perfect schedule together isn’t as tough as it seems. Here are some handy tricks to help you out:

Explore the Course Explorer if you’re looking for a class to take to meet credit hour or any other requirement, just browse the Course Explorer. All classes are sorted by very specific subjects, which makes is easy to look through. That one class that you randomly found and just registered for because it sounded interesting could end up being the best class you take all semester long.

Use Google

Talk to upperclassmen

When in doubt, just Google it. By using Google to find information about classes, it will cut down the time of needing to search through countless links and hard to find pages on the University websites.

Upperclassmen have the experience and knowledge and it is okay to utilize it!

They can give you the best opinions on which professor grades easy or whether or not taking a biology class or a chemistry class is the better option for your interests and goals.

Use a schedule planner Whether you use a website, calendar, spreadsheet, or just plain old pen and paper, actually listing out your options helps make things clear. Online schedule planner Scheedule was originally started at UIUC and continues to be a useful tool for many students. It not only allows you to plan your schedule, but also allow you to connect to other friends that use the site and see what they are taking. Another simple tool that can easily be used is Google Calendar, where you can input all of your classes and look at what a typical week would be like.

Don’t be afraid to drop classes If all else fails and you’re taking a class that you thought was going to be great but turned out to be less than fantastic, don’t be afraid to just drop the class. Granted, you might need to find another class to fill it’s place or might need to retake it if it’s a core course for your major, but you can change a mistake into the best decision you’ve ever made.

t’s not advertised on your acceptance letter, but freshman year of college can be a scary time.

Behind all of the fun opportunities and friends, you’ll also find yourself making some major decisions.

Besides deciding on classes and activities to join, you also might face a common but important decision for freshmen: Should I rush?

The University of Illinois boasts the largest fraternity and sorority community in the country, with 97 sororities and fraternities. Still, that counts for only about 25% of the undergraduate population. There’s benefits to both joining and not joining, so if you’re headed to college unsure, do not fret, we’re here to help.

It’s a positive life decision for many students on campus, but that doesn’t mean it’s for everyone.

To Not Rush

Not everyone is part of the Greek community; in fact, the majority of students are not affi liated with the Greek system. Greek life is just one way to get involved, and there are hun-

dreds of student organizations on campus–you’ll have a pile of flyers by the end of Quad Day to prove that.

Other students choose not to rush to focus on academics or sports. Many sororities and fraternities are time-consuming and have many events per week.

They’re also expensive to be a part of, especially if you are required to live in the house. Some sororities can cost up to $2,000.

Another reason to avoid Greek life is the social scene. In some cases, much of Greek life is going out to the bars and consuming alcohol. It is possible to be in a house and not participate, but this reason can discourage students from rushing.

Additionally, not being in Greek life doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. With the abundance of bars on campus, concert venues and restaurants, the Illinois campus provides plenty of other ways to have a fun night out. So while joining Greek life has its benefits for some students, there are plenty of students who prefer to do their own thing and get involved in other ways.

Overall this is just one of the decisions you’ll make in college, and there are many factors to consider.

Both have their benefits and will provide you with an amazing four years here at Illinois.

orty-four thousand students may appear intense.

I came from a high school of 2,000 people so I knew I needed a larger school, and I wasn’t worried about the numbers at Illinois.

I’d found my place in high school, and I hoped I would be able to do the same thing wherever I went.

As an incoming senior at Illinois, I’d like to say I did. In the past three years, I’ve done everything I could to make the most of my time, between clubs, jobs, study abroad and internships. It all lead me to fi nd friends along the way toward fi nding a home among thousands.

It started my fi rst few days of school when I decided I wanted to branch out, meeting as many new people as I could. I’d sit in our floor’s open lounge getting to know neighbors and starting conversations with random people passing by.

I joined organizations, such as The Daily Illini, fi nding great friends as we went on throughout the years and spent nights bonding by collectively putting together a paper.

I’m also lucky in that the College of Media is small, meaning I have shared classes with the same people throughout the years — strengthening relationships with students and professors alike.

Then, my sophomore year, I found 15 new friends when I studied abroad in Paris.

Flash forward from those fi rst few days of freshman year and I’m living with these people, hanging out with them on a regular basis and even randomly running into them on the quad non-stop. It is possible to make a campus as large as Illinois feel like a home.

While the numbers may scare you, don’t let them intimidate you. You’ll fi nd your niche and friends soon enough. It may take a while or maybe just a few weeks, but you’ll soon fi nd yourself calling your dorm, and thus Champaign, home.

While it can be intimidating to put yourself out there at fi rst, start with baby steps and you’ll soon fi nd it becoming easier.

Not only will you possibly gain friends, but you’ll acquire a new confidence as well. College isn’t just about the parties and classes. You change as a person throughout the years and cliché as it sounds, you really grow into yourself.

It’s the time to be selfi sh doing what you want when you want to learn about yourself. Make the most of it by doing what you can for your academics, career and social life.

Before coming to school here, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about Illinois as my choice. I remember realizing the fi rst time I called Champaign home on a phone call with my parents. My dad, an alumnus, pointed it out. And I couldn’t agree more. I’d found a home on campus and with all the people I’d met along the way.

Every new student has to endure it, and when you do, odds are you’ll quickly become familiar with McKinley Health Center.

McKinley Health Center offers students a very wide variety of services. There are a variety of different clinics to address whatever illness or medical problem you may be facing. McKinley has a clinic for women’s health, immunization and travel, mental health and three general health clinics.

The best thing about McKinley is that it’s "free."

One downfall of McKinley is the location. With the exception of a few residence halls, getting to McKinley can be a bit of a trek, and when you’re already ill, the last thing you want to do is walk a mile and a half to see a doctor. Going to concerts or shows can be one of the best things you can do with friends. A great show can be a mix of good vibes, beautiful performances and of course: a great venue.

Canopy Club

Address: 708 S Goodwin Ave, Urbana, IL Location: Right down the street from the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, Canopy is also across the street from, Evans Residence Hall and just a walk away from Allen Hall and LAR. Am I old enough: If you’re 18+, you’re good.

More days during the week than not, you’ll find a goodsized crowd flocking to the Canopy Club. It makes sense, the venue’s schedule is packed with events and concerts. Last semester alone, big names such as R&B artist Jeremih and EDM producer Carnage played the Urbana stage. Canopy also serves

drinks and food in case you’re trying to add to your concert experience. Tickets vary from artist to artist and can be bought online or sometimes at Manolo’s Pizza and Empanadas right around the corner.

The Accord

Address: 51 East Main St Champaign, IL Location: Being in downtown Champaign, probably not. Though you can take a 100 North Yellow or 120 West Blue bus to get there.

Am I old enough: Like other campus bars, you do have to be 19 and older to get in.

Formerly known as the Highdive, th is dow ntow n Champaign venue has its good share of big names as well as playing home to many local acts. The Accord not only does music but can also host drama performances and stand-up comedians.

Music wise, acts such as St. Vincent and Twin Peaks have played here. Comedy wise, actor Creed Bratton (known for his role as “Creed” from “The Office”) performed an evening of music and comedy in January.

Krannert Center for the Performing Arts

Address: 500 S Goodwin Ave, Urbana, IL 61801 Location: Krannert is a block away from the quad and across the street from the ISR dorms.

Am I old enough: Varies from event to event, usually all ages.

Music, theater and dance come together at this Urbana venue. Mostly known for its more symphonic acts such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (performing Sept. 24), the center is also home to the biennial Ellanora Guitar Festival.

Pygmalion Festival (Sept. 16–24)

Address: Varies, in the past, concerts were held at The Accord or vegetarian restaurant The Red Herring.

Okay, but is it near where I live: Varies, but probably. Pygmalion does a good job of balancing downtown Champaign and on-campus venues.

Am I old enough: The festival itself is all ages, though if a concert is at a venue such as The Accord, it is 19+.

Not so much of an actual venue, Pygmalion is an independent arts festival that comes down to the

Champaign-Urbana area every fall since 2005. Artists play at various spots in the area, ranging from The Accord to the Krannert Center for Performing Arts to vegetarian restaurant The Red Herring.

Festival artists in the past range from Diplo (2013) to American Football (2014). This year’s headliners include EDM-outfit Louis the Child and critically acclaimed rapper Vince Staples. If the music isn’t enough to reel you in, Pygmalion also celebrates arts, tech and literature through other separate events and festivals. They just added food this year too, yum.

State Farm Center

Address: 1800 S 1st St, Champaign, IL Is it near where I live: If you live within a section of Memorial Stadium, then you’re good. If not, the State Farm Center is only a quick walk away from the Ikenberry Residence Hall area.

Am I old enough: It varies, but most concerts are all ages.

Did you know the late great Prince came down to Champaign in 2004? Prince! That’s the type of huge names you’ll find playing at the State Farm Center. The stadium

was renovated last season and will be home to concert venues again.

Pop group Pentatonix is next up on Oct. 29.

Foellinger Auditorium

Address: 709 S Mathews Ave, Urbana, IL Is it near where I live: Right on the Quad, it is a good middle point for most residence halls.

Am I old enough: It varies, but most concerts are all ages.

Mostly known for: being a huge lecture hall. On occasion, you will see a performance on the Foellinger stage. Star Course is a student RSO that has brought names such as indie-folk artist Father John Misty and rap duo Rae Sremmurd to come through the lecture hall doors.

It’s a strange thought of a venue, but its sheer size and architecture make it a one-of-a-kind. That and the fact that you can sit in a desk while watching something like Rae Sremmurd, which is quite an experience of its own.

D

uring the school year, it can be so easy to get into the routine of going from your dorm to class and back.

However, there are so many hidden gems on campus that some students will never know existed after four years at the University. Trust me, as an incoming senior, I am already in a panic, worried that I still have so much to see and not enough time. Luckily, as a journalism major, I have gotten to leave the

classroom and explore for writing assignments and stories for the Daily Illini.

I’ve found myself at several interesting places — concert venues, farms, little-known libraries and even law and government offices (not as interesting). So, if you’re looking for a new, cool place to study (or procrastinate), you have come to the right place. Here are some of my favorite overlooked spots on and around campus.

Arboretum

Stop and actually smell the roses at these gorgeous on-campus gardens. Taking up 160 acres, the Arboretum is open to all students and the public as a way to

provide beauty as well as plant science and arts education. Some of my favorite features of the arboretum are the ponds, cherry trees and the gazebo in the Master Gardener’s Idea Garden.

Rare Book and Manuscript Library

During my freshman year, I got the opportunity to write a story about the Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Located on the third floor of the Main Library, it is truly a hidden gem on campus, with almost half a million books. There are old texts ranging from the Elizabethian period in England, Shakespeare and the Bible. They also

have collections that depict American history and culture, free speech and economics. It is easy to plan a visit on the library’s website, and once there, a curator will help you fi nd what you are looking for, or just show you around. (There are temperature-controlled rooms where they preserve the books!)

Visit the “Prairie Monk”

It’s true that the best experiences are unplanned.

One day, a friend and I were walking around downtown Champaign when we came across what looked like a secret garden with tall grasses tucked away from the industrial street. As we

snooped around, the owner of the garden, David Monk, also known as the “Prairie Monk,” came over and gave us the grand tour. Monk, who calls himself a preservationist, environmentalist, naturalist, educator and activist lives nearby and created the garden, or “pocket prairie,” as a way to preserve the Illinois prairies so people can appreciate them. To experience this for yourself, stop by the nearby WEFT Radio Station (113 N. Market Street), where Monk does a weekly radio show on Sundays at 11 a.m. If you ask, he may show you around.

Illinois Dairy Farm

Did you know there are 400 cattle at the University?

If this intrigues you, get outdoors and visit the Illinois Dairy Farm (2307 S. Lincoln Ave.), where students can learn about the dairy industry and animal science (and see the adorable cows, of course!). I visited the Dairy Farm for a Daily Illini story, about a 16thgeneration cow at the University named Illini Nellie.

Antonio’s Pizza serves thin-crust pizza by the slice until 11:00 p.m. on weekdays and 3:00 p.m. on the weekends. The chain originally started in Amherst, Massachusetts, but is a campus favorite for pizza late at night. I recommend the pizza topped with tortellini, which combines two of my favorite foods–pizza and pasta! There are several other neat combinations you can try.

If you’re looking for large portions of nachos, burritos or quesadillas, Burrito King is your answer. Located on Green Street, it is a popular late-night destination for Mexican food. I usually get the steak nachos, and even when splitting them with a friend, there are leftovers!

Fat Sandwich is one of the better-known late-night destinations for food. The restaurant serves crazy sandwich combinations such as the Fat Illini, which is topped with chicken fi ngers, mozzarella sticks and ranch dressing. If you aren’t hungry for an entire sandwich, I would recommend the mac and cheese bites as an after-dark snack.

WRIGHT STREET

Chopstix offers carry-out, dine in and delivery of Chinese food on campus until 3:00 a.m. every day. I would recommend the sesame chicken with fried rice; it always seems to hit the spot. The restaurant is one of the only Chinese restaurants open late on campus.

Insomnia Cookies Insomnia Cookies is my all-time favorite late-night food. Located near the intersection of Sixth and John, it is close to the center of campus and open until 3:00 a.m. It serves cookies and ice cream in a variety of fl avors, and the cookies are always straight from the oven.

My favorite type is the chocolate mint cookie; when it’s warm, it’s to die for!

rbana-Champaign may seem sleepy at times, but Downtown Champaign is filled with numerous gems. We’re lucky to have such a lively downtown area so close to our campus. Make sure to set aside an afternoon during a spring or fall weekend to explore the many different vintage boutiques, cafes, and restaurants that Downtown Champaign has to offer. It’s a great place to spend with a few of your friends, your parents, or your significant other. There are endless places to look into, but these three places are, in my opinion, some of the most unique places that I would recommend making a beeline for.

Cream & Flutter Cream & Flutter is a bakery downtown that creates delicious cupcakes, cookies and macarons from scratch each day. The idea that delicious, pure ingredients will create a better fi nished product is integral to the mission of the bakery. The menu includes classic favorites such as the signature red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting and more unique delicacies like the blackberry macarons or salted caramel brownies topped with chocolate ganache and sea salt flakes. The store also has a commitment to helping the community, and partners with charities such as the University of Illinois Relay for Life and Crisis Nursery. If you need to satisfy your sweet tooth while downtown, Cream & Flutter is a great place to stop.

When I first entered the shop, I had to catch my breath because I had never seen so many books in one building. With books on everything you could think of lining every wall of every room and hundreds of shelves groaning under the weight of the thousands of books, you are sure to fi nd something you’re interested in reading. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, another room full of books emerges. The staff is very eager to help you fi nd what you’re looking for. If you’re not looking to buy a book, there are places for you to curl up and read on your own. This shop has everything from vintage manuscripts to children’s picture books to your favorite series.

If you’re looking for an outfit for that party you’re heading out to on Halloween night, look no further. This store is hard to miss when you’re traveling through downtown due to the Tyrannosaurus Rex peeking out of one of the outer walls. Dallas has a huge collection of full costumes, accessories, and decorations that you can browse. Around Halloween, they even have a haunted house that you can walk through for free, and if you get to the end, they award you with a medal! Totally worth the nightmares later. Whether you’re going as something terrifying, cute, or a little more revealing, there is bound to something at Dallas that will complement your outfit ideas.

Athletes to watch outside of football and men’s basketball MASAKI SUGIMOTO Editor-in-Chief

T

here is a lot of hype this year for both football and men’s basketball. Football has former Bears coach Lovie Smith at the helm, and basketball has forward Malcolm Hill,who is shaping up to be one of the better seniors in the Big Ten. Here are some superstar athletes that you may not know of when coming to campus.

Martinez is arguably one of the best wrestlers Illinois has ever seen. With two national titles in two years, Martinez now embarks on the second half of his journey to be one of the best that college wrestling has ever seen.

If Martinez completes the three-peat at 157 pounds, he will become the first wrestler in Illinois history to win three titles. If he can win a title all four years, he will be only the fifth person in history to do so. His name will be with the greats like Cael Sanderson and Kyle Dake.

Make sure to watch for Martinez’s matchups against Penn State’s Jason Nolf. The only time Nolf and Martinez have lost in their career is to each other. This is shaping up to be one of the best rivalries that college wrestling has to offer.

The Big Ten is the strongest wrestling conference in the country, so most of the opponents Illinois will face are going to feature the best wrestlers in the country on either side.

Wrestling may not be your cup of tea, but watching one of the great ones is sure to make you a fan.

With this team, it was hard to narrow it down to just one athlete because this team is so good year in, year out.

If you were to rank the greatness of an Illinois squad based on wins or postseason fi nishes, men’s golf would come out on top.

Illinois has been a powerhouse in golf, a rarity in the midwest. They have been able to compete with the Big 12 and PAC 12 when it comes to postseason play.

Last year the team almost made it to the fi nal round of match play but fell short against Oregon, who were playing in their home state.

Every year this team has dominated the Big Ten with seven conference titles in the last eight years.

Catching the team is hard. The closest they played to Champaign last season was at Olympia Fields on the south end of Cook County. If you do get the chance to watch this team in action, you will know why they were named the best team at Illinois and why their head coach Mike Small was named coach of the year.

Some freshman come into school having just turned 18 and are ready to start the new chapter in their lives. Brandon Ngai just turned 18 but is about to be a junior and a defending NCAA champion.

Ngai won the pommel horse title last season for the Men’s Gymnastics team. At 17, he was the youngest NCAA champion.

Ngai could return to the top spot on the podum again this year. Illinois always manages to get someone bringing home an individual championships.

Illinois is one of the few schools in the country that is lucky enough to feature a men’s gymnastics program with only 16 around the country.

Gymnastics may be a sport that is not everyone’s goto for an event, but if you want to witness a team that is consistently among the top in the country, go see Illinois.

They are second in the team titles with ten.

he University of Illi nois ath letic department suffered arguably one of its worst years in its history.

Since May of 2015, two varsity head coaches were accused of player mistreatment, former head football coach Tim Beckman was fi red a week before the regular season,

former athletic director Mike Thomas was fi red, the department faced two lawsuits from players, new football coach Bill Cubit was fi red a week before spring practice and four men’s basketball players were arrested.

And that wasn’t all.

But after the figurative hurricane passed through the athletic department, new athletic director Josh W hitman seems to have provided the calm the department so desperately needed. He

pulled the shocker of all shockers when he signed Lovie Smith to be the new football coach. He provided Illini fans a new motto that’s taken off better than “Our state. Our team” ever could’ve hoped: "We Will Win." Although the former Illinois tight end has rejuvenated Illini nation, fans need to be reasonable with their expectations in the upcoming year, especially when it comes to the school’s revenue sports.

Illini Union Café when he met with students, but that doesn’t mean this year’s team will automatically challenge Ohio State, M ich iga n State a nd Michigan for a Big Ten title.

Fans need to remember that this year’s team has only Beckman and Cubit recruits. Lovie has made a strong start in recruiting the Class of 2017, especially within the state, but there are plenty of holes in the current roster.

The defense lost a lot of playmakers and coaches will be forced to rely on players who haven’t started before. Yes, the defensive line will be the anchor, but the linebackers might be cause for concern.

The offense returns senior quarterback Wes Lunt, who will learn a new offensive system after the departure of both Bill and Ryan Cubit. Lunt lost his lead running back Josh Ferguson to the N F L, but sophomore Ke’Shawn Vaughn provided highlight reels that might remind fans of former great Illini running backs.

Injuries continue to be a problem for the team.

Both wide receiver Mike Dudek and running back Dre Brown suffered ACL tears for a second-straight offseason, meaning other players will need to step up.

Fans shouldn’t plan on a 2-10 season like the one the team suffered during Beckman’s fi rst year, but getting to a bowl game with a 6-6 record despite a difficult schedule would be considered a victory for Lovie.

The upcoming year is a make-or-break season for men’s basketball head coach John Groce. Many called for Groce’s head after his team failed to qualify for the NCA A tournament for a third straight year as four players were arrested with two of which being dismissed from the program. After all the arrests, Whitman decided to stick by Groce. The head coach will have to prove his worth to the program, especially in his upcoming recruiting class.

With the dismissal of Kendrick Nunn, senior Malcolm Hill remains the face of the program. Both Tracy Abrams and Mike Thorne Jr. were given a

And who knows what surprises and fun journeys other teams will take fans on this year?

So while the new faces in the athletic department are exciting and fans have a right to think it’s heading in the right direction under the leadership of Whitman, remember, be cautiously optimistic.

pulled the shocker of all shockers when he signed Lovie Smith to be the new football coach. He provided Illini fans a new motto that’s taken off better than “Our state. Our team” ever could’ve hoped: "We Will Win." Although the former Illinois tight end has rejuvenated Illini nation, fans need to be reasonable with their expectations in the upcoming year, especially when it comes to the school’s revenue sports.

Fans need to remember that this year’s team has only Beckman and Cubit recruits. Lovie has made a strong start in recruiting the Class of 2017, especially within the state, but there are plenty of holes in the current roster.

The defense lost a lot of playmakers and coaches will be forced to rely on players who haven’t started before. Yes, the defensive line will be the anchor, but the linebackers might be cause for concern.

The offense returns senior quarterback Wes Lunt, who will learn a new offensive system after the departure of both Bill and Ryan Cubit. Lunt lost his lead running back Josh Ferguson to the N F L, but sophomore Ke’Shawn Vaughn provided highlight reels that might remind fans of former great Illini running backs.

Injuries continue to be a problem for the team.

Both wide receiver Mike Dudek and running back Dre Brown suffered ACL tears for a second-straight offseason, meaning other players will need to step up.

Fans shouldn’t plan on a 2-10 season like the one the team suffered during Beckman’s fi rst year, but getting to a bowl game with a 6-6 record despite a difficult schedule would be considered a victory for Lovie.

The upcoming year is a make-or-break season for men’s basketball head coach John Groce. Many called for Groce’s head after his team failed to qualify for the NCA A tournament for a third straight year as four players were arrested with two of which being dismissed from the program. After all the arrests, Whitman decided to stick by Groce. The head coach will have to prove his worth to the program, especially in his upcoming recruiting class.

And who knows what surprises and fun journeys other teams will take fans on this year?

So while the new faces in the athletic department are exciting and fans have a right to think it’s heading in the right direction under the leadership of Whitman, remember, be cautiously optimistic.

Thanks to its long history of strong athletics, the University of Illinois has garnered a sizable following by fans from all over the country. You can catch most of the games on TV or at least follow the scores online, but these are some of the more fun ways to watch them on campus.

Go to the game

Being a student at the University of Illinois comes with some major perks when it comes to sporting events.

By just showing your iCard, all students have free access to watch any sporting event on campus besides football basketball and volleyball. Although those tickets aren’t free, students get a major discount and tickets can usually be found for as little as $10. For the biggest fans, there is also the option to get involved in the student sections (Block I for football, and Orange Krush

for basketball). They put on some fun events that often include free food or t-shirts for all of its members.

Road Trip

Often times for larger sports like basketball and football, student sections will offer traveling packages and group trips to some of the closer schools. Just this past year a large group of students traveled to Iowa for the football game. Specifically, students that are members of Illini Pride have the opportunity to go on road trips for free by attending enough events and earning points. It’s a good opportunity to see some other Big Ten campuses and possibly visit friends if you know people at other schools.

Every Saturday morning many of the fraternities will pair up with sororities and go to some of the on-campus bars such as The Red Lion, Kam’s, or Joe’s. They almost always have the games on and even if you are not 21

(Champaign’s legal age to get into bars is 19), it is still a fun environment to hangout with friends and cheer on the Illini.

No matter your method, getting involved in Illinois sports is one of the most fun things you can do during your career at Illinois.

The tradition alone draws in fans across the country, but being a part of it

while you are on campus is a completely different atmosphere. There's nothing quite like looking out into the stands and seeing thousands of people wearing orange and cheering on your school.

The football season will be the first on your priority list in terms of games.

Lovie Smith is the new coach, and the roster has some solid players that will make the team competitive. Here is a list of four games that you should consider attending.

Murray State

This isn’t exactly a huge matchup or anything, but it is the first game. Watching Lovie coach the Illini will be the main highlight as many Bears fans are hoping to taste the same success that Lovie brought to Chicago. The Illini should run away with this game, but some key contributors should start showing their skills in this game.

North Carolina

The start time for the game against North Carolina is 6:30 p.m. CST,

which means the Illini will be playing under the lights. Night games always bring a certain level of excitement, if nothing else because the Illini have not had many on the schedule in the last few years, and the night game last year was postponed due to rain.

In both of the last two years, the Illini have lost to North Carolina in the first few weeks of the season, so the team will eager for a victory this year.

Minnesota

Minnesota is a team that the Illini should have beat last year. Shannon Brooks was one of the main factors in the Gopher’s victory that day.

The Illini will be taking on the gophers on their home turf this year, and for homecoming. The Gophers had a home field advantage last year with the low, weather that was in the twenties. Hopefully homecoming will not be that cold, and the home crowd can clinch a win for the Illini.

Northwestern

This is not only a rivalry game, but one that the Illini want some revenge for. The Illini’s bowl hopes were crushed by Northwestern last season at Soldier field. This matchup is hopefully one that will be closer than last time. The game is also the only away game on the list. Away games, especially in the Big Ten, are a great experience. Being in a new town and a new stadium for a game can be exciting as you get a taste of what other Big Ten schools have to offer. I recommend finding a group to travel with and going by car. It is over break as well so there won’t be much worry about the trip interfering with school work.

In comparison to many other Big Ten teams, Illinois football offers a great deal on tickets, and the atmosphere of the games does not disappoint.

Tailgating tricks to ensure a great day ISABELLA JACKSON Supplements editor

ith the creation of Grange Grove in 2015, tailgating before Illini football games has reached a new level. Previously known as Lot 36, Grange Grove is the area directly to the West of Memorial Stadium before crossing First Street and is sought after because of the prime location, atmosphere and beautifully landscaped area. It is complimented by a statue of The Galloping Ghost and namesake of the spot, Red Grange. Students are able to reserve a spot in Grange Grove for free, and many Registered Student Organizations, fraternities and sororities and groups of friends are taking advantage of the spots.

When tailgating, there are a few items that are necessary to bring and helpful tips to ensure a great game experience.

Enjoy food at all times of the day

In the past few years, the Illini have had multiple games with a kickoff at 11:00 a.m., meaning that tailgates would start at 8:00 a.m. or earlier. That early in the morning, most of the guests will just have rolled out of bed, and a hot dog or hamburger might not seem too appealing. Instead, opt to bring bagels and cream cheese or make pancakes or french toast sticks on the grill.

When the team is lucky enough to get a afternoon or evening start time, take full advantage of the lunch hour and grill burgers, brats and hot dogs. Make sure to fill a

cooler with ice to keep cold food and drinks chilled to a healthy temperate – nothing ruins a game day like a case of food poisoning!

Additionally, don’t forget the snacks. It is always nice to have a bag of chips, some Chex mix or cookies to snack on, especially if you are planning to tailgate for a long time before the game.

Mingle with other Illini fans

One of the best parts of tailgating is being surrounded by other fans who are also there to cheer on the Illini. Tailgates are a great way to meet fellow students, alumni and even professors. Because everyone is there for the game and has similar interests, many people are willing to chat about football, campus and your experience as an Illini.

On Homecoming weekend, the University provided a free concert in Grange Grove, allowing people to break out of their tailgating spots to sing along with the music of Rodney Atkins.

Clean up after yourself Grange Grove is immaculate before games: the grass is mowed and lush, there are trash receptacles placed strategically throughout and the place is welcoming to the thousands of Illini fans who will walk through its doors. Before you leave to enter Memorial Stadium, make sure to leave your tailgating spot as you found it.

Throw away garbage, especially food that could smell or attract animals, and grab any trash that others may have left.

Dress for the weather

The football season spans from late August to midNovember, meaning Illini

fans will experience two weather extremes – temperatures in the nineties during the first few games and freezing winds by the end of the season. During the first few games, remember to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.

Blankets are allowed in Memorial Stadium, so if you think it may be chilly, feel free to carry one into the game with you. For most games, it is helpful to dress in layers. Although it may be chilly in the morning when you begin to tailgate, by late afternoon it tends to warm up, especially when you are sitting in the sun. On the other hand, seats in the top of the stadium may be windier and chillier than the tailgating spot on the ground.

If drinking alcohol, stay safe

Many people will choose to drink at tailgates, and while alcohol is allowed in Grange Grove, it is important to be smart and take care of yourself. Eat food and drink water. Don’t be belligerent, especially when you run into fans of the opposing team. Be respectful of those around you, especially the Memorial Stadium volunteers who are there to make sure the day goes smoothly.

If you or a friend does need medical assistance for any reason, there are professionals in Memorial Stadium that can help.

Lastly, have fun. Tailgating is one of the best parts of college football, and everyone can enjoy it, regardless of age or passion for the sport.
