If you’re looking for an artist to top all your favorite playlists, get acquainted with Sam Setton. The NYC based R&B-meets-pop artist provides heartfelt vocals over warm electronic-infused production and will likely become one of your new faves!

Let’s talk about your upcoming single, “Hurts So Much” – what’s the story behind the track?

It’s a story inspired by a breakup I went through. It’s told from the perspective of someone who just recently went through a breakup and is romanticizing the relationship. They are begging their ex to take them back in order to work on making the relationship better than it ever was.

Any memorable moments when creating/recording it?

Yes, actually! I’m based in NYC but at the time we recorded HSM, I was in LA for a few weeks taking meetings and finishing up other tracks with Alexander, the producer I work with. One day, we had invited a few people over to hang at his house (shoutout Didi) and I was just messing around with the keyboard while we were talking and I started to play/sing the early version of HSM… Everyone was vibing to it and so we started the recording right on the spot!

What’s the songwriting process usually like for you?

The process for me is almost always the same. I start by sitting at the keyboard at home, late at night, starting with an idea I had written in my notes app or with a cool chord progression. I usually create some melodies and start to write a verse or chorus. Then, I sit on it for weeks or months, crafting the song until it sounds right to me.

When it comes to stage presence, which artist(s) do you admire?

Great question. I thought about this for a while and I’m honestly not really inspired by anyone in particular. I guess I do pick up small things from some artists here and there but I just try and be myself when I’m on stage. I focus on really getting emotional with the performance and just try and bring the energy every time.

What do you hope listeners take away from your songs?

Everyone has their own relationship with the music they listen to, but I’d love for my fans to see and understand the stories behind each of my tracks and be able to relate to them while also enjoying the sonics.

Who do you think is killing it in the music scene right now?

GASHI, Alec Benjamin and Cautious Clay.

What’s something you’d like to see more of in the industry?

I’d have to say more awesome female producers and more independent artists supporting each other.

What’s on your bucket list for this year?

Touring the country, releasing another 6-8 songs, and playing a show overseas!

Any special message for fans?

If you’re a fan, or even a casual listener, I love and appreciate you. I got some more music and a great live show coming to a city near you. Follow me on socials to be a part of this journey with me!
