Joseph Sunde & Anthony Spurgeon Snr Memorials Captivating night’s racing to open 2016 with 2 iconic Heffron races,
the Joseph Sunde Memorial and the Anthony Spurgeon Snr Memorial. Blustery southerly winds which peaked at 70kph just before racing meant it was always going to be survival of the fittest and strongest.
21st Joseph Sunde Memorial
A stellar list of names adorns the Joseph Sunde Memorial Trophy which celebrates the memory of Joseph Sunde who lost his battle with leukemia in 1993 when he was only 4 years old. The event has always attracted the cream of Sydney’s racing scene with some classic hard fought races – the 2016 edition was no exception with a quality field of 25 elite riders in typical summer evening Heffron conditions. Scott Law wasn’t on hand to defend his 2013 title when the race was last conducted but his brother Jackson along with NSWIS team mates Jake Kauffman and Nathan Bradshaw were. Add in regular Heffron hitters Alez Nazawericz, Alex Wong, Brad Mills, Dan Bonello and Dave Evans and the pace was on from the get go. A threatening break in the final 3 laps of Chris Miller, Alex Nazawericz and Chris Barlin looked like they would steal the race at the bell but a monster last lap effort by Jake Kauffman delivered Jackson Law to the line first to keep the Joseph Sunde Memorial in the Law family trophy cabinet for another year. Big kudo’s go to Brad Mills who placed second and was also the bridesmaid to Scott Law in 2013. Add in Millys second place in the pre Xmas Trophy Race and you must feel a win coming soon. Alex Nazawericz snatched third by the narrowest margin from Liam Kelly which was a deserved podium spot after he was one of the main protagonists all race.Kudo’s also to all 13 finishers who put on such an awesome display of power, speed and aggression which underlines the beauty of club racing at Heffron. As always big thanks go to Colin Iremonger and the team from Eastern Suburbs Cycling Club who prepare the circuit and manage the event for an enjoyable nights cycling for riders and spectators alike.

45 starters lined up for the 15 lap race and after only 3 laps it was obvious the stronger B grade riders were going to make it tough for everyone. Tough conditions meant it was difficult for a breakaway to form and in the final laps Niall Durney was dominant on the front with Anthony Spurgeon closely monitoring every move. This was Spurge’s race and he was determined to get his name on the trophy in memory of his late Dad. In the sprint though it was Scott Curtis who was fastest with the King having to settle for second. Lachy McKillop had a great race which he underlined by getting 3rd and on the podium. Darragh Larkin and Warrick Edward grabbed the last 2 places to complete the top 5
