Introduction
11
Every year I fall into that old tradition of making a number of ‘new year resolutions’. Meant to be more of a series of promises to myself and my family, I generally commit to focusing on living a balanced life, sharing time evenly across everything that’s important. Every year, I would look back and realise that I’d failed…….. with the exception of last year! In January 2013 I made the decision to launch a full series of events for our ACE community in Sydney. I realised that to make it happen I needed to tell E X E C U T I V E C Y C L I S T M AG A Z I N E
someone who inspired me about my resolution. This would make me directly accountable via my verbal commitment. After some brief thought about who to tell, i realised that it was not one person that inspired me but all of you. I’m not exactly sure how I came to announcing the series to the entire group and then agreeing for a calendar to be published, but it sure did the job and I have you to thank for a magical first year.

As we now look to 2014, and we make the

commitment to grow and include our Melbourne members, I feel that I can speak from a position of experience and let you know that by sharing your goal, vision or resolution with those close to you, the chance of achieving success increases substantially. So whether pledging to ride more kilometres, enter a challenging event, improve your diet, spend more active time with the family or drive improved ebit data, be sure to think about who inspires you the most, shout the coffee and be brave enough to share your resolution. Welcome to my Adelaide. Adelaide is my Aussie summer home, my cycling home and my training ground for Europe. Born and bred in Sydney the sea change at 26 years of age was a calculated decision to become a world class athlete. Adelaide was my Launchpad – A quieter city, less expensive and a gateway to relentless traffic free terrain of the Adelaide hills, McLaren Vale and the Barossa which soon became my workplace toward European success. The Adelaide cycling community have been an incredibly important part of my development as an athlete humbly receiving support from the South Australian Institute of Sport, local produce suppliers, bike shops, gyms and of course local coffee shops! I still choose to reside here in Summer months while I prepare for Europe and remain adamant it is one of the best cycling cities in the world! www.rachelneylan.com

Greenhill Road. It’s not the steepest climb in Adelaid, but it is one of the longest and hardest. Starting with a few ramps of 9-10% (the steepest part of the climb, the road soon evens out . And it is relentless - at an average 6.6% for the total climb (over 7km), it is a good test for a confident climber . It also makes for a fun descent.

Something to share with the group….a passion, something interesting: I donate approximately one litre of blood plasma every 3 weeks at the Red Cross and will make my 150th donation next month. I wondered whether the reduction in blood plasma affected athletic performance – like climbing speed in the Adelaide Hills. I was certain my community service to medicine was the only barrier to me leading my own squad to victory up Alp d’Lofty. I found scientific studies that showed plasma donation has absolutely no influence on athletic performance but subconsciously I still cling to the idea that it’s the sole reason I don’t climb as fast as others. It couldn’t be anything else, could it? 53

Montacute Road
Hugh Bannister: Montacute Downhill This is my favorite descent from the hills, only
problem is that you have to get to the top first, and Corkscrew is only half way up! From the top
beautiful views across the valley, especially when you look down to clouds in the valley. As you approach the junction at the top of Corkscrew the gradient increases with a couple of sharp bends, this caught 20+ pros on the TDU napping last year when they had a big stack on one of these corners. After this the gradient levels, the road is smooth, the scenery in the valley spine tingling and the descent fast and furious. You can peddle as hard as you like and it feels like you will never stop accelerating until you hit the first roundabout at Cambletown!

of Marble Hill the descent is slightly undulating
Bill Le Blanc: Montacute Road
This is my favourite climb near the city. The gradient varies with plenty of 10-12% challenges in the mix. The climb is adjacent a creek at the bottom and it’s easy to lose yourself in the environs and forget you’re supposed to be suffering up the hill. The ‘average’ gradient of 5% misleads - this climb has some challenges in it. For a nice steady climb at 5% try Norton Summit Rd – a lot of riders (self-included) use Norton as a bit of a climbing time trial / reference point.
