LUKE CRIDLAND WINS 24TH JOSEPH SUNDE MEMORIAL Luke Cridland added his name to a stellar list of local and international winners when he won the 24th edition of the Joseph Sunde Memorial Race with a commanding sprint to edge out Jack Bennett and Chris Powell. The race has always been about family and this years edition was no exception with the Cridland family part of racing at Heffron Park since the circuit was established in the late 70’s. Ken and Gai Cridland were both on hand to witness their son’s win, along brother Jonno who also raced and of course his No 1 supporter, wife Michelle. The family connections continue all the way down the results list with Grant Bennett a Heffron regular who never misses watching his son Jack race. The Mills family Dom, Viv and Elke (minus Hank and Delores) were all there again to support Brad who once again was on podium proudly with children Viv and Elke. The touching support from the local community always makes for a special night which is an incredible legacy for a brave little boy who lost his battle with leukemia in 1993. And it’s this little extra bit of emotion which also comes through in the racing with the 27 strong elite field setting a blistering pace in the opening laps. An early split in the bunch added to the pressure before Crit Dawg Dan Bonello escaped solo after 7 laps. The next move surprised everyone when
RESULTS
masters rider Liam Kelly proved 50something is just
1 Luke Cridland (St George)
halfway point the duo had a solid 15sec advantage.
2 Jack Bennett (Randwick)
The next 2 moves were just impressive as Alex
3 Chris Powell (St George)
Nazarewicz and Brad Mills got across to make it 4
4 Bradley Mills (Parklife) 5 Tristan Ward (Sutherland)
a number when he got across to Bonello and at the
up the road. Then came a very ‘unCridland’ like move when Luke Cridland made it across solo
6 Jonno CRIDLAND (St George)
laying down an impressive marker of strength.
7 Liam KELLY (Easts)
Eventually it was back together for the closing laps
8 Chris BALL (Manly)
before Ed White and Phil Lucas launched what
9 Jack RENSHAW (Northern Sydney)
looked like a race winning move. At the bell it was
10 Dave EVANS (Manly)
Phil Lucas solo holding onto a slender gap with the
11 George BRYAN (Sydney Uni)
entire crowd behind him.
12 Jesse COYLE (Sydney Uni)
The headwind over the back got the better of Lucas
13 Phillip LUCAS (Manly) 14 Aaron BICKNELL (Manly) 15 Dan BONELLO (St George)
and as he was caught the sprinters lined up to etch their name on the trophy for 2019 with Luke Cridland a deserved and popular winner
