The perfect ingredients for a memorable Tuesday Night’s racing at Heffron Park....

- Howling 50kph summer afternoon NE wind

- 2km of concrete, corners and gutters which make up Heffron Park - Solid field of 115 starters

- Stellar field of 32 A grade riders with guest appearances from St George Continental’s Marcus Culey and ACA Cycling’s Michael Potter

Mix in all the regulars, a bumper crowd, photographers covering the track and the result is an awesome spectacle of drama, speed and power.

B grade got the race underway followed by a 40 strong C grade field.

Next was a diminished B1 field of only 10 riders and after a 2m 20sec gap A grade roared into the life. The handicap format makes Tues-

day Night racing the hardest race on the Sydney calendar and when there’s a 50kph

NE wind blowing across the track the racing is brutal.

Riders were losing contact in the first 3 laps and by mid race most

grades had dwindled to less than half. A grade ripped through B grade just inside 5 laps and weren’t waiting for anyone.

An ambitious group of 10 C grade riders were still up the road and

looked at one stage they to have half a chance to stay away for the

win. An impressive move by Marcus Culey and Peter Livingstone with 2 laps to go looked dangerous and of course Darcy Ellerm-Norton’s trademark attack followed.

It was all A grade on the last lap plus Sam Dwyer and Nelson Aston

from C grade who somehow were still hanging in. In the finale there

were only 10 riders left in contention and Michael Potter wasn’t wait-

ing for anyone, kicked early and lead the entire straight to claim a well deserved win a Tuesday Night Heffron for the ages. Jesse Coyle and Alex Nazawericz had to settle for 2nd and 3rd while Joel Walsh and Darcy Ellerm-Norton completed the top 5.

Next was daylight before Sam Dwyer rolled in to win C grade and

prove both he and Nelson Aston are ready for B grade next week.

Another big patch of daylight followed before the last group finished with Troy Fisher claiming B grade with a very solid ride.

Congratulations to all riders who raced and especially those who toughed it out to finish.

THE KING of HE ANTHONY SPURGEON

Call him washed up, call him a retiree, just don’t ever

forget that he is THE KING of HEFFRON. No other rider in the history of the world has ridden more laps or won as many races here.....#fact

THE KING rates for us the top 10 place getters of Tuesday Night Heffron Week 3.

1st: Michael POTTER (Northern Sydney) A. I only see you race a few times a year. Do I like what I see? Not really. Now in all seriousness, when you hit 18 in a few years come and have a drink and we’ll disuss your career path 2nd: Jesse COYLE (Sydney Uni) A. Mate you may just be future Heffron royalty. The only A-Grade top 10 finisher from Week 2 to move up more than one place. But guess what. Kings don’t come 2nd, so try harder next week. 3rd: Alex NAZAREWICZ (Manly) A. So you stormed back onto the podium to finish 2nd loooooser? This is not good enough although my highly educated guess is that you are positioning yourself for greater things when you soon get to your 50’s, like Liam did years ago. 4th: Joel WALSH (Illawarra) A. Like many racers from south of Sydney, those years spent stealing bikes and fleeing from the police served you well. It’s not about the bike is not true, Cash Converters are still counting out the dollars. 5th Darcy ELLERM-NORTON (Rapha) A. Once were warriors doesn’t come to mind. A week out celebrating your ‘greatest ever sprint win’ has clearly gone to your head. To be a true winner son, you have to keep winning. Like I used to, week after week. Boring you say? Only for the trophy engraver who knew one name - mine!

6th Liam KELLY (Easts) A. Now here’s a name I have been looking forward to seeing, on the podium again. I have to admit I too got old and a little slow but you know, “Once the King, Always the King”. Your long apprenticeship may soon be over but alas, like Prince Charles the wait will be a long one. LONG LIVE THE KING 7th Brad MILLS (Parklife) A. I fondly remember a time when you and I raced and defeated a future international cycling star. Gerro became a legend. I became The King. And you...? 7th? This is deserving of what, a spray of foul language on social media. Keep up the good work. 8th: Jack BENNETT (Randwick) A. We’ve touched on social media, so let’s now talk diet. Having slipped down the podium I can only guess you aren’t eating out with Naz as much. Might I suggest you catch up with Jake K at the Upper Crust in Collaroy. You need to fuel up to move up. 9th Dwain HESP (Central Coast) A. Those training sessions we did together are paying off. But 9th does not pay much so you now need to practise your on-camera appearances and start a VLOG that pays serious $$$ per week 10th: Scott LAW (Marconi) A. Son, you went to the USA for our off season, did well, came home and got yourself a new team but you’re riding like a three-legged dog with fleas. 10th might as well be last.
