EDITOR’S LETTER
A year ago this time- I was preparing to release our first print issue. An issue that had been writing itself for some time before the idea to even publish crossed my mind. The Dapifer has always been a bit of a growing process- a medium that seemed to shape and re-shape itself as I began to understand more and more its purpose. I would say I started this project- by design. I think I’m beginning to understand that more and more now. What began as a blog enamored with snapshots of my closest friends exploring new and known places - started to consume me in ways that I hadn’t prepared for. Questions such as , “Who are these people?”, “Where are they going?”, and most importantly “ Where have they been?”- started to flood my thoughts as I searched for more creative and ultimately editorial ways to display fashion- not only fashion - but people as they existed in my mind. THIS WAS FASHION. Perhaps this is why I was so uncertain at the start. Uncertain of exactly what The Dapifer was- and frankly, what I was doing posting street style photos and writing dialogues about it. It’s not really the type of thing that people just casually do. Around that time, I realized that to understand The Dapifer myself, I had to do things BIGGER- and of course that meant a few things. I realized that the only way to truly bring some of these stories to life and people together would require a differnt format-not a blog but a magazine. And slowly the pieces began to come together- Things began to feel right and I begin to meet amazing people- photographers, designers, artists- and began to connect in ways that can only be explained in photos. So we produced our first issue- and as you can imagine it was a learning another long-exciting-absolutely exhaustive process. A process that urged me to rethink, redefine, and recreate exactly what The Dapifer was- not only for myself but for the individuals that would become our muses-our artists-our inspiration. In the back of my mind I always knew that there was a certain level of responsiblity that came along with being any type of writer, editor, or artist. I think this is why the world of fashion and more so fashion media is so powerful. Powerful because people are always watching- lookinglistening.. and judging. It’s quite the intensive conversation, but it too can be very personal. That’s what The Dapifer is. Perhaps we’ll all understand it a bit more later. Along with the assistance of my team ( Francis Vazquez and Jon Gordon) things make more since now than ever. It almost feels as if The Dapifer was just a name and we had already signed up for the same project long before- We just didn’t know what to call it. So let’s ask some tough questions, meet a few interesting people, and collect some pieces-and our thoughts along the way. We’ll even print it out on a few glossy pages and save you a copy. Welcome to ‘The Begining’
-Lakenya Kelly

J
it is an urgency. a potential. and a risk.
INTERVIEW Where did you grow up? Dublin, Ireland. When was your first time coming to the U.S.? Ha! It was when I was 17 or 18. I don’t know why, but I told my parents. I was going to Wexford, which is the Irish countryside. I went to NYC and have returned every year since, including to do projects at Princeton and Cornell. Is there one inspirational memory from your childhood that sticks out? I remember dressing up. A lot. At what point did you decide that you would be an artist? That’s always a difficult question. I don’t even know if you do “decide” , without being pedantic. When did I admit I wanted to be an artist? When I got accepted into art college.
For a long time, black ink. I love a strong line and a drawing that achieves a lot with not so many marks. But I am now really rediscovering film making- collaborating with another artist Gary Farrelly on some low (or no) budget films called Radical Science that just won an award, and writing the script for a longer film called GLUE. What other artist influence/inspire your work? Werner Herzog, Sophie Fiennes, Jean Cocteau, Nijinksy, Matisse, James Turrell, Samuel Beckett, John Waters. The influence isn’t always linear. What’s the biggest project you’ve done so far? The Paper Ball was big in terms of cast, for such a short film. I have over 100 performers/participants, all dressed in paper gowns which we co-produced, and were destroyed during the performance. It was filmed on 16mm Bolex cameras by a cinematographer call3ed Andrew Legge.
What was the first piece you created?
What does art mean to you?
I made films all the times as a kid. I would boss my sister and my cousins about and we would work really hard and be exhausted. Thinking about it now, it had the same urgency I experience in art making now.
It is an urgency, a potential, and a risk. And it puts a really important value on the apparently useless.
Where do you find inspiration? Moving. I do my best thinking when I’m walking or on airplanes. You do a lot of drawings of people- How do you portray the individual? I tend to see the best in people. But then, I only paint people I am comfortable with- usually my friends who are usually other artists. It’s routinely four or six or more hours sitting with a person, or in my case, standing with a sitter. It is an intensified and unusual chunk of time to spend with one person, examining one person, without leaving the room, and sometimes without speaking. For that reason, the whole situation requires and produces trust. What’s your favorite medium?
Do you see the connection between art and fashion? Absolutely, and quite often. I am really inspired by wearable or performed art objects- like Oticica’s Parangoles or Franz Erhard Waither’s work. For a performance work I just made in collaboration with AA Bronson, we had these incredible costumes specially made by Bless in Berlin. The results will be shown in Witte de With in Rotterdam in September. How would you define your personal style? Very variable. I get all dressed up and then I dishovel myself. Do you have any favorite designers? I like Maison Martin Margiela, a lot. And Comme des Garcons.
THE DAPIFER-PF1 3
What’s your favorite place to travel? I am addicted to travel! But I enduringly love Kerry (The West of Ireland) and NYC. If you could change one thing about people, what would that be? Aggressive-Opressive normality. What are you future plans for your work? My portraits are being shown this October in a group show called the Line of Beauty at The Irish Museum of Art (IMMA) curated by Rachel Thomas. The portraits are large and on fabric, and hang like banners or flags. One of favourite writers- Alan Hollinghurst- is writing the text for the show.
“I tend to see the best in people. But thenI only paint people that I trust.”
