Master the art ofsimplicity

8 I www.dentaltechnician.org.uk

Within modern day dentistry, the needs of the population have become more complex. Patients are living longer and our way of life is providing plenty of unique issues for the dental team to manage, whether due to our lifestyles, habits or diet. As such, prioritising convenience and simplicity wherever possible is vital to avoid becoming overwhelmed, and be able to deliver exceptional outcomes for every client.

Successful treatment results often go hand-in-hand with prime investments, but the beauty of simplicity is that less is often more. It’s not about how much you buy, but rather whether what you invest in helps you meet the needs of your clients, who in turn can offer a better experience to their patients. Streamlining workflows may also help to save on costs as well as time, which are often precious within this profession.

WHAT CONTRIBUTES TO SUCCESS?

Focusing on one of the most innovative developments in dentistry, dental implant treatment has established itself as a popular patient preference. Patients around the globe are experiencing the benefits of this modality, and it’s clear that dental implants are able to dramatically improve a patient’s quality of life, in addition to being a dependable source of revenue for dental practices. Clinicians who place the implants have access to first-class training, meaning they’re able to tackle even the most complex of cases. Dental technicians can also undertake training and gain support, helping to refine their skills in the design and fabrication of implant-retained prosthetics and frameworks. The plethora of digital options have also helped to streamline treatment workflows, from planning software to imaging technologies. The implant systems and components on the market today have increased dramatically in quality, which means clinicians and technicians have more choice than ever before.

A major factor in the success of a treatment is co-ordination between the dental team, namely between the dental practice and the dental laboratory. Even with the outstanding advancements made within the industry, communication is still a simple yet vital tool that can influence the final treatment outcome.1 Quality communication can also improve the experience for both the clinician and the technician. Modalities such as digital tools have helped to simplify the passing of information between the practice and the laboratory, but are there further ways to streamline this relationship, prioritising simplicity where it’s needed most?

A SIMPLER PORTFOLIO

For both dental technicians and clinicians, a simpler product portfolio can make life all

that much easier. In particular, for clinicians who don’t have a large number of implant patients, but plenty of cases where they need to replace/repair an implant crown, a simpler, more flexible selection of products does away with time spent seeking out and ordering the correct components. Essentially, a more versatile yet streamlined selection removes any unnecessary stepsgranting peace of mind, too.

For the dental technician, a diverse range of multi-platform components, compatible with all major implant systems, can be a boon for the laboratory’s workflow. Choosing multi-system components will help to streamline tool selection and reduce the need to stock various types of products. If their clients’ patients present with implants from various suppliers, they’d be in a prime position to support the clinicians with compatible abutments and components. Money can be saved through simplifying the laboratory’s products, and also through satisfying clients. As you know, satisfied clients are a benefit for business - they exemplify the standard and quality of the laboratory’s work, and word-of-mouth is still a trusted method of gaining new clients.

So, dental technicians should communicate with their clients and suggest products that will help to simplify this stage in the dental implant treatment. At the end of the day, the goal is to provide dental work that is long-lasting, beautiful and comfortable, while avoiding overcomplication and unnecessary stress. Maintaining communication between the laboratory and the practice is another key factor.

THE VALUE OF VERSATILITY

Investing in multi-system implant abutments and components will be appreciated by your clients, as well as for your profit margins, as they’ll save you valuable time and money.

Leading manufacturers will also provide a guarantee for their products, demonstrating quality and assurance, so you’ll have peace of mind that your work will be long-lasting.

Dental technicians are prime players in the dental implant workflow, so it’s vital that you have the right products at hand to support your clients and their patients. The Medentika® Multi-Platform System (MPS), from the Straumann Group, provides an attractive solution for dental professionals working with multiple implant systems. With Medentika®, you hold all the aces, because our extensive MPS range includes connections to all major implant systems. By delivering multi-platform components and abutments that are durable, fully compatible and priced affordably, the cards are stacked in your favour. Combined with German precision engineering and a lifetime guarantee, you’ll always have a winning hand with the Medentika® MPS.

Nowadays, the choices for products and systems in dentistry are endless. While many of these innovations help to save resources such as time, money and labour, too much choice can sometimes encourage inefficiency. Simplicity, an ethos that promotes quality over quantity, can help to improve the experience at every step of the treatment pathway.

PREPARING FOR THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES AHEAD

lSteve Campbell, President of the Dental Laboratories Association (DLA), will be speaking within the DTS Lecture Theatre programme for 2023.

He says: “The industry is experiencing what will be the biggest transformation in its history. We only have to look at other manufacturing sectors that have already been transformed by the technology and digital workflows that are now starting to dominate our sector in the same way. This will bring both threats and opportunities to the dental lab community.

“My presentation will be an update on the challenges and opportunities that lab owners and dental technicians will

soon face. I hope to share some of the good and the bad to help others prepare for the future.

“I have attended DTS for many years now and always find it to be a great event. I would recommend it to colleagues as a means of growing their support network and discovering opportunities to enhance their knowledge and understanding of a rapidly changing industry.”

DTS 2023 will be held on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 May, NEC Birmingham, co-located with the British Dental Conference & Dentistry Show. For more information, visit the-dts.co.uk or email dts@closerstillmedia.com

VITA Zahnfabrik presents Digital Highlights at the DTS

lThe Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) will take place in May 12-13, 2023, in Birmingham. During this trade fair, visitors are invited to the VITA stand in Hall 11 to witness live demonstrations and innovations from the fields of tooth shade determination, digital prosthetics and zirconia.

VITA Easyshade LITE for digital tooth shade determination

With the NEW VITA Easyshade LITE, VITA Zahnfabrik introduces a brandnew variant of its digital shade measuring device. Visitors can test for themselves how easily and accurately the tooth shade can be measured. Thanks to high-precision spectrophotometer technology, the device presents the right tooth shade on the display within two seconds. This is shown in both VITA classical A1-D4 and VITA SYSTEM 3D-MASTER shade standards. The device

is operated with just a push of a button and can be carried out safely by all users.

Zirconia VITA YZ ST: Faster sintering, reliable strength and an even greater choice of shades

Robust materials that can be produced efficiently and precisely in the required shades are an everyday necessity in digital laboratories The light effects of a natural tooth should be reflected in a blank with excellent shade accuracy, in order to finalize restorations quickly and easily. Due to that VITA presents several news about the super translucent and polychromatic zirconia VITA YZ STMulticolor with an yttrium content of 4 mol%. The zirconia blanks are suitable for the production of monolithic, as well as partially veneered crown and bridge restorations in the anterior and posterior regions. VITA YZ STMulticolor not only

offers a lifelike play of light, but also a natural shade gradient from the neck to the incisal edge. The portfolio is available in five VITA SYSTEM 3D-Master shades (incl. bleached shades for even more brightness in cosmetic restorations in the aesthetic zone) and will be expanded to 16 VITA classical A1-D4 shades in July 2023 to ensure that a blank with the right shade is available for every patient.

With the VITA YZ ST speed sintering range, you can now sinter up to three bridge units in less than 60 minutes. The high bending strength (1,200 MPA) offers functional safety. VITA YZ ST is the indication-based key to precise results, consistent strength and exceptional aesthetics.

The group discussed how digitalization is transforming dentistry and why some dental professionals are still hesitant to adopt digital solutions - and how to provide them support.

“Dentistry is digital and digital is humancentric. We are moving the technology to the background and enabling dental care teams to focus even more on the patient,” said Max Milz, Group Vice President Digital Platforms & Solutions at Dentsply Sirona. “That is why we need Cloud and AI; these two key components drive the technology change.”

The second DS Talks, United for sustainable dentistry , focused on the critical role of the dental industry in creating a better planet and society - and how it can be part of the daily practice. Panelists challenged the whole industry to understand, commit, and take action by leveraging resources such as the ones described in Dentsply Sirona’s Toolkit with Resources for Developing a More Sustainable Dental Practice

“As an industry, we have both a responsibility and an opportunity to make our care as kind to our planet as possible,” said Dr. Steven Mulligan, dentist from Sheffield, United Kingdom, honorary clinical fellow, and founding member of the FDI World Dental Federation Sustainability in Dentistry Task Team. “Prioritizing sustainable measures can seem like a daunting task for many clinicians, but there are so many actions that all of us can take each day to reduce our impact on the environment. So I would recommend everyone to join the challenge and take one action for a more sustainable dental practice. In doing so, they will be caring for their patients and the planet.”

base showing through without negatively affecting the translucency of the zirconium oxide. During the sintering, the liquid diffuses into the zirconium oxide and masks the titanium base.

COMPLETING THE ABUTMENT CROWN

The sintered crown (NexxZr T Multi) showed the usual good fit and after the sintering had wonderful optics and a smooth colour gradient. The vestibular veneering (ZI-CT, Creation) was performed in five steps. For the first firing - Frame Shade bonding agent - the veneering surface was coated with a high-fusing, fluorescing ceramic material. The second firing is similar to the wash firing. Using the sprinkle technique, fluorescing shoulder material was sprinkled onto the framework. This produces a slightly roughened or glazed surface that creates vivid colours and supports the bond between the zirconium oxide and the veneering ceramic. For the dentin firing, the crown was coated with the dentin and enamel materials. Because NexxZr T Multi has a tooth-like colour already, only a thin veneer layer is necessary. This step was followed by a corrective firing and, after working the surface texture, by the final glaze firing.

CEMENTATION OF THE TITANIUM BASE AND INSERTION

Cementing a crown to the titanium base requires a reliable protocol because the bond determines the long-term success. Blasting and conditioning of the titanium base and the zirconium oxide adhesive surface and cementation with the luting composite (Multilink Hybrid Abutment, Ivoclar) were performed according to the information from the manufacturer. Thorough removal of residual composite near the cementation joint followed manual polishing of the basal parts. A certain micro-roughness is recommended in the transmucosal area to encourage the growth of the gingiva while at the same time counteracting the deposition of plaque [3] A final check on the model confirms the fit and correct adjustment of the proximal contact surfaces. The restoration was sent to the practice and screwed occlusally into the patient’s mouth.

CONCLUSION

The exceptionally natural appearance of the light optics of the hybrid abutment crown is confirmed intraorally. The restoration appears warm and vibrant from the inside out. The titanium base is completely concealed; nevertheless, the crown has a beautiful translucency. In theory, NexxZr T Multi and its colour and translucency gradient allow the fabrication of monolithic restorations. Because the aesthetic demands in this case were high, vestibular thin-layer veneering was carried out. The functional

surfaces remain monolithic, which provides a high level of protection against chipping. The expectations of the patient were met in full. The implant dentistry therapy is successfully completed. At the same time, this efficient method of fabrication is in accord with the economic requirements of the dental laboratory.
