THE GLENN MURCUTT EXHIBIT AND DESIGN STUDIO A PROPOSAL FOR SUPPORT
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Design School in collaboration with the Arizona State University Art Museum and members of the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects proposes to develop an exhibition of the work of Australian architect Glenn Murcutt. The exhibition will be researched, curated, designed, fabricated, installed, and documented by a team of faculty and students from the School and Museum. 1
STATEMENT OF NEED The Design School and the ASU Art Museum are now seeking $80,000 to curate and design the Glenn Murcutt exhibition and develop the trans-disciplinary graduate design studio. The exhibition will be designed by Design School students with support from the museum’s curators staff, and offers participants an opportunity to better understand the collaborative engagement between the curatorial and design processes required to mount a major exhibition.
The Exhibit The Australian Architecture Foundation has assembled a package of Murcutt’s work for exhibition. The package includes drawings, renderings, photographs and models of a variety of Murcutt’s projects. Access to these materials is available for a fee. The exhibition materials highlight Murcutt’s genius for designing projects derived from a keen observation of the natural conditions of each project’s site. Murcutt was designing “sustainably,” long before the term became fashionable and noted for his interest in projects which “touch the earth lightly.” With its range of nuanced responses to range of natural/climatic conditions An

They will collaborate with Heather Lineberry, the museum’s Associate Director and Senior Curator. The instructional team will help students understand the process of curating an exhibition and will work with students to design an exhibition of Murcutt’s work. The exhibition would open in spring of 2015.

Travel As a part of the studio experience students would travel at the beginning of the semester to visit a series of museums whose collections and/or exhibitions focus on architecture. A preliminary list would include the Canadian Center for Architecture in Montreal, the Center for Architecture, Cooper Hewitt Museum, and Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Building Museum in Washington DC. The ten day trip would allow students to see a number of museum exhibitions related to architecture and understand the range of design strategies employed to help interpret the exhibited work.
The Catalogue The students will be documenting the studio to capture the entire process from travel and research, to concept, fabrication, and installation. An exhibition catalogue will be designed and printed to accompany the final exhibition.
