In 2007 my sister was diagnosed with depression and in 2009 my mom knocked on my door to inform me that my sister had taken a hand full of pills and was taking her to the hospital. At the time I was 14 yearsold and didn’t quite understand what was wrong with my sister. I look back and wish some one would have told me how I could have been there for her, but not even my parents knew what to do so I just stood on the sidelines.

“Depression is a lot of things, for a lot of different people, but the cliche is anger turned inward and the lack ofexpression of the pain the people experience. For people to understand what depression is, it’s not a flip of a switch. It’s like wearing sunglasses all the time and everything is tinted grey and the difficulties is taking those sunglasses off.”

“ How would you describe depression to some one?”

Let them know you are there to help Be patient

“People can help by being patient, compassionate, listening, and understanding that they aren’t going to be able to fix that person and that it depression takes time. You can also help by allowing them to talk when they want to talk, making suggestions, avoid giving them ultimatums, and letting them know there are resources that they can talk to.”

Maria Grimshaw Arizona State University Counseling Services “How can people

without depression help those who do?”

“I believe that the most you can do for someone that is going through depression or anxiety is to be patient with them. Try to understand that this is something they don’t want either and to be supportive through this hard time. If you’re going through depression, just hang on. Sometimes it can get really really bad, but the outcome is always truly awesome.”
