a new urban open space with connections to the past.

The new A.J. Chandler Park is both responsive, progressive, and evocative creating a SEAMLESS representation of Chandler. The park represents the past, present, and future of Chandler and its diverse urban environment.

Rows of trees are planted in line with building features, this connects park to exterior spaces. The Chinese Pistache was chosen for its Fall colors.

Rio Grande Cottonwood

Shaded area for relaxation and decompression buffered with trees and dense planting of shrubs.

Allows for unstructured use like concerts and is reminiscent of historic park.

The shade structure is made to evoke feelings of fluidity and water. Also representing old Commonwealth Canal that biseted park.

Populus deltoids ssp. wislizeni

A smaller less water intensive cottonwood that still gives the same feeling as the Freemont Cottonwoods that formally lined Commonwealth Ave.

Passive Recreation

Cottonwood Promenade is open planned area to host farmers markets, events, car shows, Chandler Culture nights.

Gentle hills with dirt paths and tall grasses, changes the atmosphere of the park to a more natural feeling.

Urban Agriculture Fields

Bike Path & Arizona Ave. Separates bikers from traffic e ncouraging a bike friendly environment.

A reference to Chandler history and a great use of open space for the community.

BioSwale

Basketball Courts

Controls stormwater and also channels water to cottonwood swales and agriculture fields.

Adds active recreation to park and doubles as parking lot on late nights for businesses with l.e.d. lights in ground to mark spots.

During the day the canal shade structure floats over gathering areas while seamlessly connecting both sides of the park and representing the historic Commonwealth Canal that use to run through the park.

At night the center ribbon of the shade structure illuminates providing light along path while also connecting both sides of the park even at night with a band of light.

Water collection swale to accomodate Cottonwoods water needs. Also receives water from restroom sinks and drinking fountain drains.
