SprungDigi is a project all about social media and digital creativity and the lives of people with learning disabilities. Many people with learning disabilities are not able to get online and give digital a try, which means they can feel left out of the digital revolution. At a time when cuts in social care can mean less opportunities for disabled people to be included, SprungDigi is about connection! SprungDigi knows that diversity and digital together make comunities stronger.
Hosted by our learning disabled SprungDigi Crew and trained volunteers you too can enjoy digital workshops, performances and games across the town on the 10th and 11th July. SprungDigi is about keeping safe too. We are making sure that SprungDigi is for everyone.

“We were the lucky ones”
Two local men return home after surviving the tragedy in Tunisia phil dennett News Editor
Two men from Horsham are back safe in Sussex after seeing the hell of a massacre on a Tunisian beach. One of them said: “We were the lucky ones that came home”. All around Kevin French and Gary Woolnough there were scenes of horror as a young gunman shot and killed 38 defenceless people in the seaside resort of Sousse last Friday. So far at least 18 Britons are known to have died, and possibly as many as 30, but Kevin and Gary made it back safely to Horsham, although still stunned by what they saw. Kevin did not wish to discuss details of his trip with The District Post when we contacted him earlier this week. He thoughtfully put a message on Facebook to thank everyone for their support and concern. An initial message told friends and family: “Back home - never seen anything like that in my life. It makes you love your friends even more.” A later emotional message said:
“We wanted to say a heartfelt thanks to all of your support and kind messages since our return back home every time I close my eyes I see what went on. “We really appreciate being back home but feel guilty about the wonderful Tunisian people who looked after us all and remain looking after people still there. “It still makes me feel numb and my heart goes out to love ones lost who won't be coming home and I will be thinking about them all and sending our love to each and every one of them. We were the lucky ones who came home.” Louse Wabe, 31, a friend, from Cowfold, said: “When we saw on the news that there had been an attack in the hotel next to where Kevin and Gary were staying out hearts dropped. We tried to contact them by phone and social media but heard nothing at first and we were extremely worried especially as there were reports coming in of British fatalities. “Eventually my husband Ash received a voicemail from Kevin to say that they had actually been on the beach during the attack and had seen everything but thankfully they were both OK.”

Actor Sheila Hancock asked people to remember victims of last week’s Tunisia and France terrorist attacks in when she was guest of honour at a celebration at Coolham. Sheila, who is a CBE, spoke to guests when she attended the reopening of the restored historic Blue Idol Quaker Meeting House. As well as being a celebrated actor and author Sheila is a Quaker. Sheila spoke movingly about Quakers being pacifists. She said they were ‘active pacifists’ and cited the way in which Friends work actively in war situations to help relieve suffering. She then asked everyone present to be silent for one minute while they remembered the “dreadful events of the last few days”. Also among the 120 guests were Nick Herbert, MP for Arundel and South Downs and Jeremy Quin, the new MP for Horsham. The event marked the end of two years during which the Meeting House, a Grade II* listed building, has been completely re-roofed with Horsham stone tiles, and many of the ancient oak timbers have been replaced. The 17th century Blue Idol was originally a farmhouse when William Penn, together with local friends, bought it and turned it into a Quaker place of worship. Terry Waite, also a Quaker, sent greetings and a poem, called The Kingdom, which expressed Quaker belief and practice. This was read at the opening ceremony together
Festival tuning up fo Saturday
Sheila Hancock chats to guests with a special greeting from Paul Parker, from Friends House in London. Don Makinder, the Valley Builder’s foreman, who was responsible for much of the skilled work on the massive oak beams, cut a ribbon. Posies were given to Sheila Hancock, Don Makinder and Barbara Kershaw who was, for most of the
two years of the restoration, the clerk to the Trustees of the West Weald Area Meeting of Quakers. Susan Richardson, who has been involved in the restoration from the beginning, thanked everyone who had helped fund the project, including English Heritage and many Quaker meetings and individuals in the UK and in America.

Samba in the night for fund raisers Rogue car dealers in £100,000 scam face jail
A touch of the Mardi Gras helped hundreds of people raise money for a hospice. Nocturnal walkers injected a little bit of Rio samba into Horsham Park as they adopted a carnival theme for the St Catherine’s Hospice Midnight Walk fund raiser on Saturday night. A choice of seven, 13 or 20 mile routes were tackled, in some cases in memory of loved ones who have fought terminal illness. When the final figures are added up organisers hope to have topped last year’s figure of just over £65,000.
The 20-mile route was being tried for the first time this year for those who wanted a tougher challenge. To give the night a splash of colour there was Brazilian-style entertainment, and walkers tucked into a ‘welcome back’ breakfast, hot drinks and a medal after the finishing line. Carnival queen Naomi Davies walked seven miles in memory of her husband, Ken, who died under St Catherine’s care. She said, “St Catherine’s has made a huge difference to my whole family. As well as helping to make sure Ken wasn’t in pain
so he could really make the most of his time with us, they really took into account the impact that Ken’s illness would have on me and my two boys even helping him to make a memory box so that the boys could remember him. That’s why I particularly wanted to take part in the Midnight Walk – to give back. I was a little bit apprehensive of the challenge, it’s a long way to walk, but I did it with friends and it was really good fun. The atmosphere was fantastic and the carnival theme was so elaborate and involving, I’m really glad I took part.”
Two rogue West Sussex car dealers running a £100,000 dodgy car scam when caught by trading standards officers face a possible jail sentence. Linda Atrell, 48, and Lucien Munn, 52, sold potentially dangerous write-offs without telling the people who bought them and also falsified service histories. A jury found Atrell, guilty of charges under the Fraud Act, Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981 and Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 Act, following a trial at Brighton Crown Court, last week. Munn had previously pleaded guilty to similar offences. The pair had been advertising and selling hundreds of cars that had been written off by insurance companies via Autotrader and Gumtree under a range of different trading names in a scam thought to be worth £100,000. In one of the biggest trading standards investigations of recent years, the county council team discovered the pair were systematically buying insurance write offs and then selling those vehicles without declaring that they had been written off to unsuspecting customers. They were also falsifying service histories in order to make the vehicles appear more attractive to buyers and giving customers the impression that they were dealing with a private seller. The court heard during the trial that the pair also described the vehicles as “sold as seen” on pur-
chase invoices to try and avoid liability under civil legislation for the sale of faulty or misdescribed goods. The trading standards team spent months investigating Attrell of Railway Approach, East Grinstead, and Munn of Beechey Way, Copthorne after a complaint from a customer. They collected more than 64 statements from buyers and previous vehicle owners.
The pair had been advertising and selling hundreds of cars that had been written off by insurance companies Money made from the crime will be confiscated.Sentencing will be on July 3, and both have been warned they could face a jail sentence. David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for residents’ services with responsibility for trading standards said: “Throughout the course of this investigation our team spoke with customers who had real horror stories about the state of cars they purchased. We’re lucky nobody was involved in a serious accident”.
Gatwick protestors win crucial skirmish Protestors fighting Gatwick expansion have called on airport bosses to drop any potential challenge to this week’s Airports Commission recommendation for a new runway at Heathrow. There had been concern from people in the Gatwick-CrawleyHorsham area of extra pressure on services and housing and extra pollution. It led to the formation of pressure groups to oppose the idea of Gatwick having another runway. Commission chairman Sir Howard Davies said on Wednesday the economic benefits of expansion at Heathrow were much greater and said he thought the Commission had presented a “persuasive case.” MPs will now consider the report for the Government to make final decision and the debate is likely to continue for many months. Although the Commission says a second Gatwick runway remains a “creditable option” Sir Howard said this week that reflected the position of all the short-listed schemes before the recommendation was made and Heathrow was the “strongly unanimous and preferred choice.” Chair of Communities against Gatwick Noise and Emissions Sally Pavey, said: “Gatwick expansion was a non-starter from the word go.“The evidence clearly shows a second runway would be nois-
ier for tens of thousands of local residents. Dirtier due to increased pollution and emission. Unforgiving on our local services and infrastructure. And would devastate the local environment and tranquil areas we have a duty to protect. “ “If Gatwick really cared about the interests of the local community, they would stand aside, take-off and start to engage constructively about how the airport can play a stronger role in our lo-
cal area and address the current issues with concentrated flight paths.” Ian Hare of PAGNE, Pulborough Against Gatwick Noise and Emissions, said: “We are pleased that the Davies Commission has recognised the sound commercial arguments for opting for a further runway at Heathrow. We now urge the Government to adopt the Davies commission recommendations.”

New firefighters join Horsham team Charity walker impressed by blind fund raisers
Brennan and Laura Fitch Two new firefighters have joined the team at Horsham fire station. Laura Fitch is one of the few women appointed in recent years and she is joined by Dan Brennan.
Laura and Dan are among ten new retained firefighters in the West Sussex Fire And Rescue Service after their ‘pass out’ ceremony at Worthing Fire Station.
They others are Aaron Secrett, Jordan Russell, Ricky Hunt, Tom Gumbrell, Casey Poor, Patrick Silcocks, Robert Legg and Jacob Peak. They have just completed an intensive two week initial training course and now have the essential knowledge and skills to join their colleagues at fire stations around the county. Retained firefighters are paid to be 'on call' for the fire service, meaning they are often employed elsewhere or are at home when they receive a pager alert, but are ready to spring into immediate action to deal with a 999 incident. In West Sussex, retained firefighters fully crew 14 of the 25 fire stations and are vital to the county's fire and rescue service. They receive an annual retaining fee as well as additional payments for any incidents or community safety events they atend. They receive regular training in firefighting, rescue and extrication techniques needed to deal with fires, road traffic accidents and other emergencies. The new firefighters were presented with certificates by Assistant Chief Fire Officer for West Sussex, Gavin Watts, who said: "The retained system only works thanks to the support of local employers. There are many businesses in West Sussex that recognise that allowing their staff to become retained firefighters benefits the community, their staff and themselves. "We still need more firefighters to be on call at many of our Fire Stations. Retained firefighters come from all walks of life and we would encourage enquiries from all sections of the community.”
Nick on the walk Blind walkers impressed a Horsham police officer helping them raise money for their charity. Constable Nick Truan, 39, completed a 100k walk in what organisers describe as an “impressive” 21 hours and 49 minutes for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity
DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT... Guy Leonard & Co have been long standing advertisers with the District Post and in this time the newspaper has gone from strength to strength. We have seen our reach increase as distribution has expanded - the circulation of the District Post online as well as through local outlets across the district has been very well received with people that we talk to as many people do now access the paper online each week. The District Post is always willing to assist us with artwork and queries as well which is an extremely useful service they are a great local team with a really good understanding of our requirements.

for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women. Fully sighted Nick has done long distance walking events before but he thinks nothing as challenging. During the tough trek Nick was particularly inspired and impressed by blind veterans, supported by Blind Veterans UK, who were taking part in the 100k challenge. Nick said: “Walking a 100k is a challenge in itself, but to do it as a blind person is an amazing achievement. I walked behind one veteran and his guide, along a really difficult stretch of terrain, and was blown away by the concentration, communication and team work being shown between the two.” He said of his own effort: “At the start line I was quite overwhelmed by the distance I had to cover. However, as I reached each check point my confidence grew. Before I realised I passed the half way point.” The Blind Veterans UK 100k challenge took walkers across South London, through countryside paths in Surrey and Sussex and the North and South Downs to the charity’s centre in Ovingdean, Brighton. Nick says: “The night stage of the walk was really enjoyable as you walked through Sussex villages and climbing onto the South Downs at sunrise was spectacular.” With a services link in the family Nick feels strongly about fundraising for Blind Veterans UK. He says: “My Granddad served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. I am a firm believer that if you serve your country you should receive the best care and support possible.” Registration has already opened for next year’s event. To find out more about Blind Veterans UK, visit www.blindveterans.org.uk Anyone wishing to support Nick’s fund raising may visit www. justgiving.com/Nick-Truan.

Girls from Farlington all-girls school staged a glamorous Sixth Form Ball instead of ‘Proms’ which was held at Wildwood Golf and Country Club. Upper and Lower Sixth girls, together with staff and parents, enjoyed a three-course meal and dancing till midnight. Other schools held the now-annual Proms nights, with music, food, and dancing. The parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Horsham, hosted the annual Collyer’s Founder’s Day and Leavers’ Recital. Founders Day has been celebrated by the college since 1532, to
give thanks to Richard Collyer, who provided in his will for a free school in Horsham, his place of birth. Canon Guy Bridegwater, Vicar of St Mary’s, welcomed the congregation, who enjoyed an evening of prayer, music and readings. Subject Leader for Music Dominic Leitner said: “Our student musicians excelled in some incredibly demanding repertoire this year. In a splendidly diverse programme ranging from Schubert to Bernstein, from Beethoven to Earth Wind & Fire, they performed with virtuosity and total engagement. I find the generosity of our students' musicianship truly inspiring, and I'm confident that our leavers can look forward to exciting musical futures.”

Whilst it is difficult to quantify results, I would say that as a free paper, delivered around the whole Horsham District and picked up from selected places in the area, they are friendly to deal with, professional, very helpful with design and swift to print. Deadline is Wednesday for a Friday print and they have NEVER let us down! We use this paper exclusively. Barnes Green and Itchingfield look back to Victorian times
Children, staff and parents were looking back into the future when residents of Barns Green and Itchingfield said farewell to a Victorian school that served pupils for more than 160 years. In its time Itchingfield Primary School educated well over 3,500 pupils and employed eight head teachers. Nestling on top of Fulfords Hill in Sussex countryside, the school was, according to a previous headteacher, “a perfect location in which to edu-
cate young children in an increasingly hectic world”. People associated with the school attended a poignant closing ceremony. At the same time they were looking forward, as the last remaining split site school in West Sussex is now being replaced with a new one on one site. Developer Berkeley Homes recently finished building the brand new school, Barns Green primary. A special book created by the Par-
ent Teacher Association is recording all the indelible memories from the old school. Pupils contributed to the content of a time capsule that was buried, including a video of youngsters entering the new school for the first time. Pictured on this page are old photographs of the school as it moves towards a modern future. Pictures Courtesy of the Barns Green Collection at West Sussex Records Office.

Remembering Philip Webb 100 years on guy deakins Gardening
2015 signifies the hundredth anniversary of the death of Philip Webb. You may be wondering who this gentleman is and what quite he has to do with you? Well, Mr Webb was one of the foremost architects of the 'Arts and Crafts' movement which dominated our national consciousness for a brief spell in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. A design movement, I might add, which still affects us today - most notably our obsession with the pitched roof 'English Vernacular' style of house. Again you ask, who cares? Go to Standen and see what I mean. The superb example of the crafted house and gardens that sits just outside East Grinstead is well worth a visit and is Webb's most complete design that survives. Lutyens perhaps is the man that everyone gravitates to when talking of the Arts and Crafts building and there are a few to choose from locally but one should never narrow your horizons to one or two design geniuses. He certainly had good PR and working with Jeykll, he was in good company so you wouldn't be
amiss, but Webb's Standen is this month's recommended viewing. Now July is upon us the soil will be bone dry and hard. The rains that we have at this time of year, whilst heavy and astonishingly dramatic - often being the thunderous type - do not usually penetrate deep. This means that your lawns will be stressed and possibly going yellow. As a result, many of you out there insist on watering the lawn to keep it 'green and healthy'. But you should not worry. Grass is an amazingly resilient plant and has a natural ability to go into a state of torpor. Well, yes, you are to some extent helping the plant; but you are doing so at the detriment to us humans. We need water too and with global climate change pretty much a future certainty, wasting it on a small patch of inedible greenness doesn't make sense does it? With barely 0.02 of all water on the planet available for us to drink, it isn't good maths. Better to let it turn yellow for the 3 short weeks it might do so, refrain from mowing it unless it is becoming obstructive and try not to stress it much more than it already is. Grass lawns are you see, a construct of our forebears and of a time before we realised our impact on our environment was so effective. If the great gardeners like Jeykll or Robinson were alive
An example of the Arts & Crafts movement
today, they would I have no doubt be using alternatives to the water hungry grass lawns when they could. I have in recent years, re-
moved lawns entirely from some gardens - in others I have replaced them with other plants such as pennyroyal and chamomile, which
whilst not as hard wearing and certainly not football friendly, offer a much more beautiful alternative.

James Hood recruited Graduate entrepreneur makes a by Mayor of London Splaat with photography business candidate Ivan Massow
A Sussex communications adviser has been recruited to work on a politician’s campaign to be the next Mayor of London. James Hood from Horsham, a business communications consultant, is working for Ivan Massow, who launched his mayoral candidacy campaign for the Conservatives in an unconventional way, via Social Media, last month. The campaign launch saw Mr Massow, who could replace Boris Johnson when he steps down in 2016, release a 60-second video giving the nation a frank look into his background. In the video created by agency London Advertising, the mayoral candidate tells viewers he is an ex-alcoholic, gay, adopted, and dyslexic but that he is a successful businessman, a ‘do-er’ and a true Londoner who wants the best for the city. The honest approach was celebrated in the London and national news, with a TV news report by the BBC praising Massow’s unique and candid start to a political campaign. James Hood’s communications strategy for the launch led to more than 80 news outlets covering the story in one day. Hood, who runs communications and content writing business, Convey, said: “My first job was to take this amazing video that London Advertising put together and try to find the most important message for the campaign launch. We led with Ivan’s
refreshing, unique approach to running for mayor. “It wasn’t politics as usual, just the truth from the get-go. It turns out people really appreciated the honesty, because the response has been fantastic. Now we are working on finding out what the people really want from a London mayor, using social media and forms on Ivan’s website.
The campaign launch saw Mr Massow, who could replace Boris Johnson when he steps down in 2016, release a 60 second video giving the nation a frank look into his background “It is the most modern, forwardthinking mayoral campaign the country has ever seen, from a candidate who is really in touch with your average man or woman on the street – and it’s about time!”
Greg McClarnon is a Business Studies graduate and an entrepreneur from Horsham, West Sussex. After turning his creative hobby into a profitable business, Splaat Media, Greg now manages a growing team of staff and a company with a turnover of £100k. Splaat Media is a professional photography service for schools, groups and corporates across the south of England. Having started the business in 2010 whilst in sixth form, Greg explains how it began: “I had taken photographs of my secondary school show the previous year and found that there was a strong demand from parents to take away a photograph of their child performing. “Other local schools heard about what I was doing and asked me if I could take photographs for their shows. It snowballed from there and now I’m actively promoting across Sussex, Surrey, Hertford-
shire, London and Essex.” Going into schools, free of charge, Greg and his team take photographs during dress rehearsals and create eye-catching displays for production nights, giving parents the chance to purchase these photographs. Greg says: “Parents love what we do. It gives them the opportunity to take away a lasting memory and a permanent record of their child’s achievement.” In 2014, Greg worked with over 650 schools and groups and is on track to hit 900 in 2015. Although he has built many great partnerships with his clients and the bulk of his business is school drama photography, he is now becoming more and more involved in live event photography. As advice, if you have a business idea, Greg believes it is important to test that your idea works, in the early days: “Then get yourself a logo, business cards and a web-
site and start to earn some money. If you find that it's working, then look at writing aims and objectives, separate business banking, book keeping etc. Creating a website really helps you to lay your product or service out and make it clear what you're doing. "You need to be determined and motivated if you're going to succeed. If you've got an idea and you're motivated to be successful just do it!” Last year, Splaat Media had a turnover of over £100k and Greg is looking to continue this success. He has ambitious plans to conquer the United States, in the future, but is currently focusing on expanding further into the surrounding counties and gradually in the north of England. He is also hoping to start photographing university graduations next year, increasing his offerings to the student and parent market.

Now in its 20th year, The Rudgwick Music Festival is one of the longest running music festivals in the area - and is one of its best kept secrets. Run by volunteers, it has helped raise more than £80K for local charities. This year the nominated charities are Jigsaw, Care Ashore and local scout groups. New business radio station launches This week saw the soft launch of a new business radio station at the Eye Café in Horsham, representing an exciting opportunity for small and micro businesses. Web based, Business Radio, is the brain child of local business man, Tino da Silva, and the host for the launch was Horsham’s optician, Dirk Bollwerk. Dirk is also one of the DJs, owner of the eclectic Eye Café (found above Dixey CB in West Street) and creator of the already popular Business Radio Jazz Corner broadcasts. The broadcasts are a mixture of music and fun interviews, tracking the journeys of a diverse and fascinating collection of local business owners. Interviewees are then given a page on the website and can join the VIP lounge, or take part in the various social media platforms. And it’s all for free! With a team of 8 presenters, from across the region, Business Radio broadcast live, for the first time, last Thursday and listener numbers are
already steadily growing. With big plans for 2016, including its official launch and hosting their own awards, it’s very much about supporting good causes and small businesses. Tino da Silva recently described the ethos behind Business Radio: “Running a small business is tough and often there just aren’t sufficient funds for marketing and advertising. Business Radio is about redressing that balance. We’ve got some great initiatives planned and we can come into your business and broadcast from there for the day, really getting your staff engaged and giving you the chance to explain what you’re all about. We’ll also be supporting important causes, such as Breast Cancer UK. It’s free and it’s easy to get involved, just visit the website, get in touch or pop into Dixey’s.” You’ll find Business Radio at www. businessradion.co.uk and on Twitter at @businessradio1 or by visiting the Eye Café above Dixey’s, in West Street, Horsham.

After eight weeks of hard work and rehearsals, James and the Giant Peach was performed by thirty-five Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 Christ’s Hospital pupils to packed audiences in the Christ’s Hospital theatre. Directed by Caroline Kelley, using elements of physical theatre
and storytelling, the talented cast let their imaginations run wild and their creative juices flow free, whilst rehearsing the play of the story, adapted by Richard George. The much loved book was brought to life on stage. Every pupil shone in their characters - two nasty aunts,
six oversized insects and one special little boy were joined by a whole host of weird and wonderful characters. The audiences joined James and his friends, and experienced their trials and tribulations, as they ventured over land and sea in an amazing giant peach!
Purple Zeppelin at the Capitol in July Featured in the BBC TV documentary 'The Joy of the Guitar Riff', Purple Zeppelin are proud to pay tribute to two of the greatest Rock Bands of all time, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin – Together on the same bill for the very first time! Many years have passed since either of the bands last played a UK gig. Whether lucky enough to have seen the originals, live or not, Purple Zeppelin will take the audience back to the magic, the excitement and the sheer raw energy generated by those incredible musicians. In a 'full on' two and a half hour show, complete with costume changes for each band, they'll hear more than 30 classic songs – basically, the best bits! Purple Zeppelin are four talented and versatile musicians, with decades of playing between them, comprising thousands of sessions and gigs both in the UK and overseas, selling out
venues up and down the country. However, this is much more than just a great band performing all the 'Greatest Hits' - it’s a theatrical insight into these two giants of rock, complete with special effects, onstage artistic differences and even some audience participation! Voted Best Tribute Band of 2012, the band members are genuine admirers of both Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. With the accent firmly on entertainment, this show promises to be a night not to be missed, complete with Ritchie Blackmore’s lute, Jimmy Page’s twin neck guitar and theremin, and a very special violin bow solo! To experience the excitement of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin in one mesmerising show, contact The Capitol Theatre Box Office: 01403 750220/www.thecapitolhorsham. com

Little Gems pottery Summer Fair and Car Boot Sale Gemma Willmer has nine years of experience working in pottery workshops. After four years managing a setting for someone else, she decided to branch out on her own and has been proprietor of Little Gems for just over three years. Being owner she made the decision not to charge studio fees which instantly reduces costs for her clients, many of whom have become regulars. One great feature of the setting is that she has created a small outdoor area where younger siblings can play in a wendy house or get creative using the chalkboard. She is also working on a colouring wall for the summer holidays. Over the summer she will also be
running some clay workshops where youngsters can have a go on the potter’s wheel in addition to the usual pottery painting offered. For more information on how to book and where you can find the full range of what is on offer see the Little Gems advert on this page.
This summer’s fund raising event for the Academies and Castlewood School is almost upon us! The car boot sale will run at the same time as the fair so please book your slots soon - space is limited! Why not try and sell some children’s clothes or toys? We normally have about 2000 people walking through the gates, plenty of shoppers... We are looking for volunteers to help on the day. So far we have 15 names. This event is enjoyed so much by the children of Southwater village and they will all benefit from the profits made. Please spare half an hour to help set up, help your child on a stall or clean up. At the moment we can only man 4 stalls of our own. On Friday 19th June we are asking for children to bring in donations for our Tombola stall. As a thank you they will be allowed into school in non uniform. We would like anything you are prepared to win, bottles of wine, beer, gifts, toiletries etc. We would also like to run a cake stall at the fair. We would be grateful
for cake donations to be brought into school on Friday 3rd July, please. On both occasions tables will be around both Academies before and after school. It’s a great day. Come and join in the fun.
The car boot sale will run at the same time as the fair so please book your slots soon Sat 4th July, 12-3pm on the Academies field. Hamptons International supports Cancer Research UK with fundraising Prize Draw Leading residential agency, Hamptons International is delighted to have launched its Grand Prize Draw - a fundraising raffle for its charity partner, Cancer Research UK. The Hamptons International Grand Prize Draw is a raffle open to customers, colleagues and friends. Prizes have been sourced by branches and teams throughout the Hamptons International network and include generous donations from luxury brands to local businesses and individuals. Prizes include a week’s stay in the French ski resort of Chamonix, a suite at the O2 arena to watch the ATP tennis, a framed and signed Didier Drogba football shirt and a Burberry handbag. Also up for grabs are overnight stays at hotels across the country, signed sporting memorabilia, VIP concert tickets, spa days, Land Rover and Aston Martin driving experiences, dining and gourmet gifts and much more besides. Tickets are £5 each and can be purchased through a dedicated Just Giving page (www. justgiving.com/hamptonsinternationalgrandprizedraw). The closing date to buy tickets is Friday 24 July and the winners for each prize will be announced by Monday 3 August. Marc Goldberg, Head of Sales at Hamptons International says: “Cancer Research UK is charity very close to our hearts and we are extremely proud to have raised over £100,000 for the cause to date. Our staff have showed tremendous commitment and support to this latest fundraising campaign and the result is a fantastic and wide-ranging selection of amazing prizes. We hope that staff, clients and friends of Hamptons International, as well as all those living and working within our local communities will enter the raffle and in turn generate a phenomenal fundraising total for Cancer Research UK.”
Landlords struggle to keep up with new laws Two in five (43%) landlords in the South East* admit that they struggle to keep up with changes in law relating to letting property a week before a new deadline that could leave them with heavy fines for missing. There are already over 50 Acts of Parliament and more than 70 sets of regulations that govern the private-rented sector (PRS). The new deadline – 23rd June – imposed as part of the Deregulation Act, affects landlords and agents in England and Wales who still hold a deposit on a tenancy that began before 6 April 2007 – when Tenancy Deposit Protection (TDP) laws were introduced – but since continued as a Statutory Periodic Tenancy (SPT) on or after 6 April 2007. Previously deposits taken in these circumstances have not needed to be protected in a government-authorised scheme and landlords are being reminded that they could face fines of up to three times the value of deposit if they fail to protect
in time. CEO of mydeposits Eddie Hooker commented:“It’s important that landlords and letting agents are aware of the legislation changes and how it affects them. They must act now and check whether they need to protect any deposits and avoid a fine.” Richard Lambert, CEO at the National landlords Association, said: “Everyone will be relieved that the Deregulation Act has sorted out the uncertainty created by the Superstrike and Charalambous judgements. Now the onus is on those landlords still holding a deposit they haven’t yet protected to make sure they do so before the deadline.” Landlords who still hold deposits that were taken before the 6 April 2007, and where the tenancy continued as a SPT prior to that date, aren’t required to protect it. However, if they don’t then they won’t be able to serve a section 21 notice to regain possession of the property. Mydeposits, a government-authorised scheme, is offering a 50% discount on their
joining fee for all landlords who sign up before the 23rd June deadline by using discount code SUM15. Eddie Hooker continued:“Our advice is simple: if you still have a deposit that was taken before 6 April 2007 then the belt and braces approach is to protect it and provide your tenant with all the relevant information as soon as possible. That way you can avoid a hefty penalty and regain possession if needed. “Protecting a deposit with mydeposits is simple and can be done online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We also have a dedicated team of advisors that are here to help landlords and agents ensure that they act in time to protect older deposits”. A detailed breakdown of what the Deregulation Act is and how it affects landlords and agents is available on the mydeposits website. For any landlords who wish to take advantage of the 50% discount off the mydeposits joining fee, visit the website and apply online quoting SUM15.
Rental demand continues to outstrip supply as number of available properties plunges The number of rental properties available for tenants decreased in May, according to the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) monthly Private Rental Sector (PRS) Report 1. Supply of rental property fell by seven per cent from April, with just 179 properties managed per ARLA branch in May; the lowest level recorded this year.2 The report found that worryingly, London – known for its booming rental culture – has the least amount of rental properties per branch, with only 134 managed in May, compared to 273 properties per branch in Scotland. Whilst overall available rental properties decreased, demand remained the same. ARLA members reported 36 potential tenants registered per branch in May, remaining the same as the previous two months. Bad news for tenants, as rents continue to rise During May, a third (34%) of ARLA agents reported rent increases for tenants. This figure has been slowly creeping up from the start of the year, when just 27% of agents reported hikes for tenants. Those living in the South West were the most affected by monthly rent increases – with just under half (49%) of agents reporting an increase – and it’s set to
get worse. Three quarters (76%) of ARLA member agents nationally, predict that rents will continue to rise over the next five years, meaning tenants already struggling to meet payments will struggle further as time goes on. David Cox, managing director of Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) comments on this month’s findings: “It is worrying to see that there such a sharp decrease in supply, when we know there is already a struggle to meet housing needs. The months following any major event such as the General Election will always cause uncertainty and shake things up for the property market, but one thing is for sure – the dwindling supply and alreadyhigh demand is an issue that’s going to continue to plague the property market. “We are in desperate need of more housing stock in this country and supply and demand isn’t something that will level out overnight. It’s vital that the new government follows their promise of building more houses, so we can free up rental properties and head on the right path to turning the property market around once and for all.” For more information and the full report, please visit the ARLA website: http:// www.arla.co.uk/

Horsham Hockey Club elated Artistic gymnasts excel by White’s England selection at Sussex Invitational Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Popular Horsham Ladies Hockey first XI regular Charlotte White – CJ – has been selected to play for the England mixed team. CJ jointly captains the Horsham mixed XI and was recently in action for the club in the National Finals at the Olympic Park. Since then she has been going through the England selection process, telling the District Post: “I’ve just found out – by email! I knew I was in the frame but I’m amazed that I’ve got in and am absolutely delighted.” Training has already started, mainly at Broxbourne and Bedford, including weekend warm up games. A three day tournament is coming up – at East Grinstead Hockey Club on July 16-18 with long-standing mixed opponents Wales among the contestants with 25 year old CJ playing at the back on the right. CJ’s parents – Steph and Tom are Horsham Hockey stalwarts, Steph still playing for the seconds and thirds after being a first teamer for a number of seasons and Tom turning out for the vets. Both have been Chair at the club and Steph is currently Treasurer, while their other daughter, Emily captains the thirds. With Horsham Hockey Club firmly in the family blood CJ says: “Because my parents play I’ve always had a hockey stick – I grew up playing and watching hockey!”

Tigers proud of their sportsmanship
Horsham Tigers bike ride raised valuable funds Junior Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor Horsham Tigers FC organised a sponsored bike ride and BBQ that
was well supported by the players, their families and club supporters. The bike ride took place along the country lanes surrounding Horsham and raised funds for the club
as well as for Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice. The hospice has been supported by Horsham Tigers for a number of years and the club are pleased to continue their involvement with such a great charity. Horsham Tigers FC has provided youth football in Horsham since 1969 and prides itself on its team’s sportsmanship that saw the club win the Sportsmanship trophy in their respective age groups in the Horsham District Youth League last season. The trophy is based on marks awarded by opposing managers that are supplied to the Horsham District Youth League, who then tally up the scores at the end of the season to find the winner in each age group. The Horsham Tigers under 13 score was not only the highest in the age group it was the highest among all the age groups; making the team the highest scoring team from the hundreds of teams that compete each week in the league.

Horsham gymnasts had a good Sussex competition
gymnastics
Dave Smith - Sports Editor
Seventeen women's artistic gymnasts from Horsham Gymnastics Centre have competed at the Sussex Invitational Competition that was held in Hastings. The first round consisted of the Level 5 out of age gymnasts in which Elena Jones competed extremely well, taking the silver in her category. Isabel Carr and Phoebe Light came away with the bronze medal for their age group but unfortunately Lily Garrard competed well but just missed out on a medal after making a few errors. Round 2 consisted of the Level 5 and Level 4 in age category and Level 3 in and out of age gymnasts. Lola McNaughton, competing in the youngest category, was placed a tremendous 3rd overall just 0.350 behind first place. Amara McGeachie and Cissy Marlow competed for the Sussex squad at Level 4 in age with Cissy taking the silver medal and Amara taking the gold medal in both sections of the competition. Izzy Lamb and Katie Ridley were the only gymnasts competing at level 3 in age with
Izzy edging in to 1st place with Katy 2nd in a hard fought competition. Honesty South in the level 3 out of age section was placed 1st, winning by an impressive 6 marks. The final round included the Level 4 out of age, Level 2 out of age as well as the FIG challenge and FIG categories. Millie Craven took the silver medal for the level 4 03 year of births, Charley Bargman also took silver in the L4 04 year of birth and Poppy Griggs took the Gold medal for the L4 05 year of births. All 3 girls represented the Sussex squad and with all age groups combined Mille Craven was 4th, Charley Bargman 3rd and Poppy Griggs again took Gold. Fran Clark competed for the Sussex squad in the Level 2 out of age section taking the silver medal in both sections of competition. Scarlett Tidy and Evie Lamb competed in the Espoir Challenge level with Evie finishing 3rd and Scarlett 2nd. Scarlett represented the Sussex squad at this level and took home the Gold medal. Izzy Hilliard competed in the Junior FIG category and with a steady competition took the Gold medal overall. This was a good competition for all Horsham gymnasts involved and was an extremely good preparation for the competitions coming up over the next few weeks.

Pulborough qualify for Horsham Cycling’s race of truth County Quarter Finals Photo by Stephen Hook
cycling
Martin Read – Sports Reporter
Pulborough picked up league points against Norfolk Bowls Jane Gray – Pulborough BC Highlights for Pulborough Bowls Club this week, came from both County and League success. The Pulborough four of John Brown, Chris Etherington, Matt Ives and Steve Adsett, played in the area final of the County Fours against a team from Chichester. After the first 9 ends, there was nothing between them at 9 shots all, but Pulborough picked up the pace with a 5 on end 11 to pull ahead by 10. Chichester showed their pedigree by clawing back the deficit to finish just 1 shot behind Pulborough at 23/22. Pulborough now go on to play in the County Quarters in Lindfield, on Friday July 3. Matt Ives is through to the Quarter Finals of the County Singles after yet another away win but unfortunately the triples met their match and are out. The next round of the Abergavenny Cup was played at Pulborough and Tarring Priory with the away team finishing with an impressive 20/11 victory, only to be knocked out by a
home loss of 28/11 to Priory. Two games were played in the West Sussex Bowls League; the first was away at Littlehampton's Maltravers, the second, at home against Norfolk. Skip Jeff Davy, with number 1, Derek Swaffield, number 2, Mick Ayling and number 3 Roger Jupp, took top rink for Pulborough against Maltravers with a strong 25/10 score line. Unfortunately that was the only 2 points achieved by Pulborough that day. A reverse of fortunes on Saturday saw a much more dynamic Pulborough team steal a valuable 8 league points from Norfolk with 3 rink wins and overall victory. Top rink for Pulborough went to skip, John Brown, supported by number 1, Melvin Green, number 2, Mick Ayling and number 3 Chris Etherington with an embarrassingly good 36/10 score line. A 6 on the second to last end just went to rub more salt into the Norfolk wounds. Other rink wins came from skip, Matt Ives, 32/8 and a fantastic comeback by Ivan Salmon and team from 18/10 behind to 25/19 by end 2. The final result was 111/60 to Pulborough.

Horsham Cycling provides opportunities for everyone, with a wide range of rides, long distance and fun events, indoor competition, UK and overseas trips and social get-togethers. And, for serious contenders, time trials – especially the highly competitive HC annual10 Mile Open Time Trial. This year’s competition was held on the Horsham to Crawley course, HC Scratch Champion Matt Andrews saying: “It’s fast, attracting those keen to beat their personal best time.” 37 year old Matt trains for up to 12 hours a week, adding: “I compete in other time trials but really look forward to the HC one – it’s a flat out competition.” Time trials, billed as “the race of truth” with each rider competing individually against the clock are the ultimate cycling test – with nowhere to hide. Time trial stages are included in most top professional events and British riders have excelled, notably Sir Bradley Wiggins, Chris Boardman and the 1988 Tour de France time trial winner, Sussex’s Sean Yates. Despite a heart pacemaker, Sean, now 55, was among the 60 strong Horsham field with two younger brothers, Conall and Christian, quipping: “It’s in the blood!” The oldest HC competitor, 73 years young Dave Manders set off first at 6.50 am, telling the District Post: “I joined my first cycling club in 1955. I’m really hooked on cycling and trained all through the winter for this event. It’s a big challenge – I en-

Storrington 117 – 51 Aldingbourne (Storrington 10 league points) After experiencing two disappointing league results on home ground, Storrington hosted Aldingbourne for its latest league game. Peter Newman’s team ploughed through the opposition, apparently with no effort; winning by 31 shots. David Ogley's team had to try a little harder to win by 21 shots, while Howard White's team had a few heart-stopping moments, but managed to win by 13 shots. Paul Leatherbarrow's team had
even more heart stopping moments with it being touch and go right up to the last end, when Paul managed to win by that vital single shot. Roffey squeeze past Billingshurst Saturday June 27 - Sussex Premier League Billingshurst 202 All Out (50.3 overs) Roffey 204-8 (52.5 overs) Roffey won by 2 wickets Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter
Leigh Harrison took early wickets for Roffey
Either side could have won this highly entertaining, fluctuating game but Roffey held their nerve to get over the line despite a concerted Billingshurst effort to deny them after they had posted their highest total in the Premier League. Billingshurst elected to bat, Leigh Harrison (2-22) dismissing both openers in a frugal opening spell. "From 97-2 and then 167-4 with Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi (39) and Sussex’s Chris Liddle, whose 42 included 4 sixes, one invading a nearby house, going well a challenging target beckoned. But that was before George Fleming got into his stride, taking 6-73, following his five wicket haul at Cuckfield earlier in the season. Batsmen contrived ways of getting out, nine falling to catches, the last three wickets evaporating for
two runs. Dan Smith mopped up with 2-5 while, crucially as it transpired, Billingshurst failed to bat out their allocation, gifting Roffey seven extra overs. Roffey also set a promising platform and at 110-2 with Theo Rivers (53) and Rohit Jagota (39) batting fluently towards a seemingly inadequate target with 35 overs in hand a straightforward win appeared inevitable. But, although the outfield was hard, fast and difficult to protect, as witnessed by 25 fours in the Roffey innings, Billingshurst held stunning catches, both close and in the deep and kept pressing. Amid a flurry of injudicious strokes squandering their earlier good work Roffey suddenly found themselves in dire straits at 147-7 with Ben Williams (4-49) and Dhanushka, 2-51, in command. But, with every run being applauded by the ever- enthusiastic Roffey crowd, an undefeated 26 from Dan Smith, batting first with George Fleming (20) and then Alex Collins saw Roffey home, holding firm against a hostile onslaught from Chris Liddle. Relieved Roffey captain Josh Fleming said; “We made a meal of that!
The way we batted and with Billingshurst out-fielding us I’m not sure that we deserved to win, much though the points are welcome.” The depth of Roffey’s batting line up got them through, Dan Smith saying: “I’ve always enjoyed batting and am used to facing some county pros in this league, so the short pitched stuff didn’t bother me too much.” Although coming off second best – just - Billingshurst gave a highly creditable account of themselves, Scott Stratton saying: “We just needed to have produced a little bit extra and we would have won,” Dhanushka adding: “We were well placed when we batted so that was disappointing, but we expect to be stronger next we ek.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Roffey, now third by one point, but with a game in hand, visit Middleton, who held on for a draw against leaders Preston Nomads, while Billingshurst entertain Cuckfield. On Sunday Roffey host East Grinstead in the Quarter Final of the T20 Cup. Scorecard link - http://sussexcl.play-cricket.com/website/results/2356445

Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter 200 years ago Horsham’s cricket ground was covered by barracks, a military base during the Napoleonic threat. Last Friday the army returned – the Barmy Army – for a special charity challenge match, the Sussex leg of a nationwide tour. Barmy Army MD Paul Burnham told the District Post: “To celebrate our 20th anniversary we’re playing 18 cricket matches and 18 golf tournaments to raise money for the Lord’s Taveners’ cricket programmes for young people in disadvantaged communities and for those with disabilities. It’s great that Horsham Cricket Club is hosting the match and we’re delighted to be here. Our aim is to raise £100,000, which will buy three
The Barmy Army on the Horsham leg of the tour mini buses for the Taverners.” Two mixed teams competed, encouraged by music from Billy “The Trumpet” Cooper. Former Sussex captain Chris Adams captained the Barmy Army side, opening the batting with his daughter Georgia of Horsham Women. Chris’s brother and nephew also played, prompting a rendition of the Ad(d)ams family theme tune. Between the innings there was a highly entertaining trick
shot golf and cricket show by Rob Brown, Craig Gallagher and Chris Adams excelling. The barbecue, raffle, silent auction and a Q&A session with Chris Adams, Sussex and England’s Holly Colvin, Paul Burnham and Billy Cooper rounded off the well-attended popular evening, Chris Adams telling us: “I’m coaching the Netherlands team now and this was my first game for three years!”
Another trophy for Atlantis swimmers Swimming Dave Smith – Sports Editor Last Saturday, 48 Atlantis swimmers headed off to the K2 for Crawley’s Airtech Relay Gala at which they competed against Crawley, Beacon and Littlehampton.
The Gala included 35 relays that covered all age groups including five squadron relays of which Atlantis won four. The Atlantis team spirit was high and all of the team swam exceptionally well with Atlantis taking the lead from the very first swim.
Although all the swimmers deserve a mention, the team of the night had to be the 12 and under boys, Archie Batten, Sam Clarke, George Haskell, Senan Marshall, Chris Lawton and Billy Brigdon who won three of their relays and swam superbly in the mixed and squadron relays.
