Inquest opens into air tragedy phil dennett News Editor
A minute’s silence was held for the 11 victims of the Shoreham Air Crash when an inquest into their deaths was opened in Horsham this week. West Sussex Coroner Penelope Schofield formally opened the inquest at a brief hearing at County Hall North, Horsham on Wednesday. The names of all those who died were read out and the hearing was then adjourned to March 22 for a further report because of the continuing investigations into the crash. It was the first time the names of all those who died has been officially made public, although some had been previously publicised through social media and statements from relatives through Sussex Police. A team of expert forensic archaeologists, anthropologists, odontologists and pathologists have helped identify the victims because of the severe damage caused by the impact and fire caused by the Hawker Hunter when it crashed on to the A27 on August 22. The crash closed the A27 for more than a week while experts tried to find evidence of the crash and identify those who died. The pilot survived the
Graham Mallinson impact but was taken to hospital with severe injuries. Dozens of floral tributes have been put near the scene of the crash and thousands of people have signed condolence books across West Sussex, including one in Horsham. It was the worst accident of its kind in West or East Sussex and attracted worldwide media
interest. Those confirmed as having died in the crash are : Matt Jones, 24, Littlehampton; Matthew Grimstone, 23, Worthing; Jacob Schilt, 23, Worthing; Dylan Archer, 42, Brighton; Richard Smith, 26, Hove; Mark Trussler, 54, Worthing; Maurice Abrahams, 76, Brighton; Mark Reeves, 53, Seaford; Tony Brightwell,
Hove, 53; Daniele Polito, 23, Worthing, and Graham Mallinson, 72, Newick. Mr Mallinson, a retired engineer keen on photography and a passionate steam railway fan, died while watching the airshow from the A27. In the latest tribute to a victim his family said on Wednesday: "He was the kindest and most generous man,

Villagers will have a Post Office again at Cowfold later this month. The Post Office says it is to re-open Cowfold “Hosted Outreach Service” at The Weald Community Church, The Smithy, Bolney Road, Cowfold. And it hopes to arrange a more permanent post office later. A “Hosted Outreach Service” uses a nearby postmaster to visit and provide a service at set times each week. It would be operated by the postmaster from Alford Post Office, who would visit the village every Tuesday and Thursday between 2 – 4.30pm. The Hosted Outreach Service will be located across the road from the previous location. The previous Cowfold Post Office has been closed after the resignation of the operator and the withdrawal of the premises for Post Office use. The Post Office said it would open the branch as a temporary hosted outreach service on September 24 at 2pm, and would be looking for a more permanent solution for the village. The same range of services as previously will be available at the hosted outreach service with the exclusion of car tax renewal. Customers can still collect benefits in cash using everyday banking services or Post Office card account. Caroline Hoare, Field Change Advisor for the Post office said: “We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents and we are confident this new service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.”
At 90 Doreen Haynes is the sort of material girl that a charity dreams of. Dedicated Doreen is one of two prolific dress makers for poor children who responded after a story in the Post. They make the clothes from donated material and turn it into dresses that delight people who otherwise constantly live with poverty. The clothes are sent thousands of miles as part of the ‘Dress a girl around the world’ project, whose credo is that every girl deserves a pretty dress. Unlike the self-centred character in Madonna’s song hit “Material Girl” Doreen, from Roffey, and neighbour Sally Barnes think of the plight of others thousands of miles away and have made hundreds of clothes. Although Doreen is a great-grand mother, she believes she is too young and fit to sit and watch the grass grow. When she spotted an article about this project in the Post a year ago, Do-
reen contacted local organiser Esther Clark, and has been sewing ever since. Now Doreen and her pal are appealing for more material so they can continue their much-appreciated work. Doreen told the Post: “Using scissors is getting a bit hard, but fortunately I have a very good neighbour who comes to cut the material, and then I stitch it all together. “I have lost count of how many dresses we’ve made. “We seem to be quite a good pair.” Sally modestly plays down her role and said: “Oh, really, it’s Doreen who does all the work”, but organisers say without her cutting the fabric would be no parts to sew together. Last year Esther took 170 dresses and shorts to Gambia, where she met up with Ian and Pippa Howard who run Pageant, an educational charity. Esther said: “Their in-depth knowledge of the area meant they knew where to take the clothes. The

children, most of whom were dressed in rags, were so excited about something that really is so simple. “It was such a humbling experience. I’ve made lots more dresses since, my mum’s been sewing, and so have another few lovely ladies” ‘Since then, I’ve sent off another two loads, and the latest is in its way this very moment. As long as I can arrange transport, I’ll keep sewing.” As a result of the publicity last year in the Post, generous readers donated lots of fabric, but Sally and Doreen make such a prolific pair that they have worked their way through most of it. The women also make regular trips to the shops, but buying fabrics soon starts getting expensive, even if the lengths required are relatively small. Any readers who have any spare fabric that they would like to be transformed into pretty dresses or sturdy shorts, are welcome to contact Esther on 01403 272978.

Riders take up challenge in the name of charity One person will have a special reason for supporting bike riders raising money for two charities at a challenge in Rusper. The bikers will compete at Sussex Pits off Rusper Road, Rusper, on September 26-27 in an event run by Sussex Pit Bikes, of Horsham. Proceeds will go to Great Ormond Street Hospital and Parkinson’s UK charity. The firm has a personal interest for supporting one of the charities. Wendy England, business partner at the firm, said: “We always support Great Ormond Street because it is such a brilliant charity and cause. “Last year we also raised about £1,000 for the NSPCC and £1,000 for St Catherine’s Hospice, as well as £1,000 for Great Ormond Street. “This year we chose the Parkinson’s charity. Man arrested over Horsham rape A 19-year old Horsham man has been arrested on suspicion of the rape of a young woman on a footpath near St Marys Church in Horsham on August 16. After being interviewed he was released on police bail until 20 October while enquiries continue. The police had a good response after an appeal in the District Post and in other media two weeks for information about the incident. The woman, in her early 20s, was found by an officer on Hurst Road after friends had gone to her assistance. Detective Sergeant Jon Robeson of Sussex Police said:"We are grateful for the information so far received from the public but we still seek any more witnesses.
"If you were in Horsham town centre in the early hours of Sunday August 16 and saw a man and woman walking from Piries bar along East Street and down The Causeway past St Marys Church, to a footpath which goes off to the left, we would still like to hear from you. "In particular we would like to speak to a group of men who we believe spoke to the woman after she was assaulted. The man was arrested on Wednesday of last week after a description was circulated. Anyone with further information may contact Sussex Police on 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101, quoting serial 368 of 16/08. They can also call the independent charity
Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111." Police say they are not linking this incident to any other offences in the Horsham area. A 47-year-old man from London is due to answer bail on October 5 after being questioned about the reported rape of a vulnerable 32-yearold woman in Worthing Road, Horsham on July 12, behind the Sainsbury’s store. Two weeks ago they issued a public appeal and image in a bid to trace a man recorded on CCTV in the area.

We just thought it would good to support it because he was saying there is not that much funding for research.” Gates for the Sussex Pitbikes Charity Festival and Dirtbike Challenge open at 10am and admission is free. On the Sunday a Pit Bike Challenge will be run, where all the riders put in a “pot” and winner takes all. There will be attractions to entertain visitors including a bouncy castle and inflatable assault course. A raffle will be run, with a top prize of a five-seater “plug and play” hot tub worth about £1600 from the Canadian Spar Company, a keen supporter of Great Ormond Street. Last year the event attracted nearly 100 riders and so far this year more than 200 have indicated they are interested in taking part.

Big day approaches for the villa The long history of Cowfold and its people is captured in a book to be launched at this month’s village history day. At the same time villagers can see an exhibition about Cowfold’s connection with World War One. With some fascinating and high quality photographs, the history book traces the community from its beginning as a small Saxon settlement in the middle of dense woodland to the diverse and thriving village of today. Cowfold: The History of a Sussex Village is published by Troubador, priced at £9.99, and is available from September 19 at the Cowfold Village History Day at the village hall , and also from local outlets. The book was compiled by the Cowfold Village History Society. Cochairman Sue Crofts said: “It is the story of a typical Sussex village where life has followed a well-defined, familiar and easy pattern through the centuries of its existence. “Predominantly it is the story, through text, pictures, photographs and charming memories, of the people who have lived, and those who still live, in and around the village and who have made it the friendly community it is today.” In 1603 about 200 people lived in Cowfold, by the time of 2011 census this number had increased to just under 2,000. Beneath its modern exte-
rior the village retains the skeleton of its early layout and some of its early buildings are still in use. Sue said: “The book is a tribute to the development of the village and its people, past and present.” The history day runs from 10.30am to 5.30pm. It features an exhibition called Cowfold and the Great War, about the brave men who fought in World War One, and is part of a project to identify more than130 men who left the village to serve ‘King and Country’. The exhibition will provide an opportunity for the public to explore biographies of the men. There will be displays that place them in the context of the village they left behind, giving an insight into their families and lives, and also illustrations of what life was like in an early 20th Century rural English village. One of the men featured is Private in the 8th Royal Sussex Regiment (Pioneers Mark Matthews , born in 1892, who survived the bloodshed and lived until 1970, holder of the Military medal. Bob Farren, Cowfold Village History Society president, said: “One hundred years has passed and yet it is important to commemorate the lives of the men and their families for whom the Great War changed everything. This event brings to life the characters so that we may remember them”

Hospice announces new expansion plans St Catherine’s Hospice, currently located in Malthouse Road, Crawley, has announced exciting plans to expand their care services this week. The local charity provides care and support to local people and their families with a life-limiting illness and, each year, cares for over 1,800 people across Sussex and Surrey. But, with 5,000 deaths in the area each year and patients living with increasingly complex conditions, demand for their specialised services continues to increase. St Catherine’s Medical Director, Dr Patricia Brayden, says: “Sadly,
over the last two years, at least 42 patients were unable to access care from our specialist In Patient Unit in Crawley as we didn’t have a bed immediately available. We suspect this figure could be even higher as professional colleagues wouldn’t refer a patient into our care if they knew we were full to capacity. The local people of Sussex and Surrey rely on us to support them and their families through this difficult time and we need to ensure we are able to provide the care and support they need.” “For this very reason,” Patricia continues, “our trustees have been carefully considering future accom-
modation plans for the hospice for the past year and we were delighted when a local supporter came to our aid by donating five acres of land for a new hospice site.” The site, based in Pease Pottage, is just over two miles from the current building in Malthouse Road and, if their planning application is successful, will enable the charity to continue to provide hospice care for more people in the local community for many years to come. The proposed hospice site will form part of a larger development, being managed by Thakeham Homes, with up to 600 new homes addressing the growing demand for homes in Sussex. Giles Tomsett, Chief Executive of St Catherine’s, commented: “We are absolutely delighted to share these exciting plans with the local community which will help us to support those who need us most,
for many years to come. The new space will not only provide us with more beds, enabling us to care for more people, but will also help us

We will also have improved physiotherapy, complementary therapy and occupational therapy facilities which we hope to share more information with you about once designs have been finalised.” “We will be holding public consultations in September and hope local people will come along to support our bid and find out more about our ambitious proposals. We are still in the very early stages of design but are considering every possibility of how patient and family care can be improved.” For more information on the proposals and to find out how you can get involved visit www.eastofbrightonroad.org.uk or www.stch. org.uk.

Youngsters who start fires are to be highlighted in a new programme also designed for parents. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has teamed up with its East Sussex neighbours to launch a new programme of help for young ‘firesetters’, as they are known, and their families. ‘Firewise’ is a new joint initiative aimed at helping children and young people to understand the dangers of ‘firesetting’ and to reduce the number and impact of deliberate fires across Sussex. Youth education officers from both fire services have spent 18 months working with a qualified education advisor to develop a new suite of interactive age-related resources for use right across Sussex. Within both its operational and non-operational staff, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service now has a team of 18 Firewise advisors specially trained to visit young people in their home or school environment. Safer Communities Manager for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service Nicki Peddle said: “We know that young people set fires for a variety of different reasons;
it may be curiosity, frustration, attention seeking or something else. We work in a supportive and non-judgemental way to help them understand and address the circumstances that may lead them to set fires. “Both fire services have been running a firesetter scheme for many years. However, by working closely with a skilled educational professional we’ve been able to develop a fantastic suite of new resources and training to support young people and their families.” West Sussex resident, Paula Hayward, who recently used the Firewise service, said: “I needed some help with my son to educate him on the dangers of firesetting. I contacted my local fire station and received a call back from a specially trained officer. “The fire officers were fantastic. They were extremely patient with him and talked to him on his level. In just two home visits they had a hugely positive impact on him.” To find out more about Firewise and the assistance that is available in West Sussex visit www. westsussex.gov.uk/fire call 01243 752535 or email youthinitiative@ westsussex.gov.uk

Employers (and drivers) Beware! In this months’ article, leading business expert Janette Whitney gives advice on the DVLA announcement that Driving License counterparts are no longer valid Janette Whitney
www.whitneyassocs.co.uk
In this months’ article, leading business expert Janette Whitney gives advice on the recent DVLA announcement The DVLA announced that from 8 June 2015 they will no longer be issuing the Driving License counterpart, and any existing counterparts are now no longer valid. You should destroy your paper counterpart after this date but you still need to keep your current photocard driving license. (Please note, this does not affect photocard licences issued by DVA in Northern Ireland) Any paper only licenses are still valid and these should be retained. Drivers can however check their driving record online via the Gov.uk website: https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence So what does the abolition of the driving licence counterpart mean for businesses?
Many businesses rely on both the plastic license and paper counterpart for identification purposes, for new employees, clients and subcontractors, as well as using this form of identification as part of our “know your client” responsibilities when checking the identification of directors and guarantors. For businesses that engage with car or HGV drivers, the paper counterpart provided vital information on which vehicles a person can drive, their driving conduct, nature and reliability, for example any penalty points, disqualifications and any offences, in order to determine whether a person should be considered for a position within their business and what risks they might be taking on by doing so. Although the paper counterpart is convenient to view this information, businesses can still check for relevant information online by using a check code generated and supplied by a prospective employee. Furthermore, as the information is all online via the official Gov.UK website, there is no room for fraud or impersonations, and the information is reliable, accurate and up
to date. Checks by HR departments for existing employees will therefore need to adapt to this revised access to information. This change eliminates the need for photocopying, and unnecessary paper usage, and so will help your business to be more economic and environmentally friendly! For more information please visit the website: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/driving-licencechanges ABOUT JANETTE Janette Whitney ACIB MCMI is a Multi- Award Winning Business Consultant and business growth specialist providing practical strategic advice to businesses from start-ups to £10m turnover companies. A new Harvest Fair event is taking place at Parham House & Gardens on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September between 10.30am and 5pm daily. It will bring together the very best of home-made food, locally-grown produce and small holding, as well as activities such as deer walks and seasonal cookery demonstrations in The Kitchen Theatre. This new event is an amalgamation of Parham's previously successful 'Grow Your Own' and 'Autumn Foraging' events and is based around the burgeoning interest in cookery and food, both eaten and home-grown. On Saturday 26th September, ITV's
This Morning chef, Phil Vickery, will be demonstrating some of his favourite seasonal game recipes from his recent book 'Game', with the ingredients being sourced directly from the Parham Estate. On Sunday 27th September, Rosemary Moon, a local cookery writer and demonstrator will be back at Parham by popular demand and showing visitors how to create delicious dishes with the very best fresh produce of the season. There will also be an 'Outdoor Working Arena' with demonstrations by heavy horses and gun dogs, as well as stalls with ferret keepers, sheep and pig owners and bee keep-
ers, all happy to offer advice on how to care for their respective animals. Enjoy guided deer walks through the ancient Parkland and veteran trees. The first records of the deer herd in Parham Park date back to 1628 and today they number around 350 animals and are carefully managed by the gamekeeper to maintain their distinctive dark brown coats. Also in the Park, visitors will be able to view inside the restored Dovecote and the Ice House, both of which date from the second half of the 18th century. THE BILLY JOEL SONGBOOK PERFORMED BY ELIO PACE AND HIS BAND Saturday 12 September, 7.30pm
The salty sound of sea shanties might seem distant in land-locked Storrington. Yet an organisation based there is promoting the health of the sometimes lusty songs across Sussex. Secret Shore is the name of a project being run by the Storringtonbased South Downs Society. It seems a new generation of Sussex singers are singing the shanties and sea songs sung on the Sussex coast two hundred years ago. Sussex students have been learning these rousing anthems as part of the project run by the society a small charity that aims to conserve
the landscape of the Downs and run a quarterly walks and events programme. Members of the public will be able to learn and sing the songs at free workshops in Shoreham and Littlehampton, starting this September. Secret Shore project manager Chris Hare, who is a Sussex historian as well as a singer, will lead the workshops with his colleagues, Emily Longhurst and Lisa Fairfield. Full details of the workshops and how to enrol can be found on the project website www.secretshore. org.uk The website includes videos of the Secret Shore team singing
some of their songs. Chris said: “It has been really great to sing with a group of young people in their late teens and early 20s. “These shanties would have been sung by young men who worked the tall-masted vessels that plied their trade at Sussex ports and harbours in the nineteenth century.” “Hearing these old work songs sung with youthful vigour, the way they should be sung, is an exciting experience. We hope that younger people living in Sussex will be keen to join the workshops and feel the power of the songs.”
Blood Brothers on stage at the Hawth Following a successful spring season of sell-out shows, Marti Pellow is back by popular demand, to continue his role, as Narrator, for the autumn leg of Blood Brothers, coming to The Hawth in October. Also returning to the show will be Maureen Nolan, who will reprise her role as the tragic Mrs Johnstone. Marti Pellow is one of music’s most respected artists. For over 30 years, he has enjoyed global success: as the lead singer of Wet Wet Wet, as a solo artist, and as one of the UK’s most acclaimed leading men of musical theatre. Starring roles include Evita, Blood Brothers, The Witches of Eastwick, Chess, Jekyll & Hyde and Chicago. As a solosinger, recording artist and with Wet Wet Wet, Marti Pellow has enjoyed virtually unrivalled chart success, with over 25 hits and three of the UK’s biggest number one singles, including the seminal Love Is All Around. In 2013. After 20 years apart, Wet Wet Wet reunited for a sell-out arena tour. That same year, Marti released Hope, his eighth solo album, and this year, he released Boulevard of Life, which saw him return to his roots as a singersongwriter and collaborate with some of his closest friends in the industry, including Chris Difford from Squeeze, for an album of soul, country and pop. Maureen Nolan has been singing with her sisters, since she was nine years old. Together, they became one of Europe’s first girl bands – The No-
lans. The Nolans’ success is legendary, including phenomenal record sales worldwide, particularly in Japan, where they sold more records than The Beatles! Maureen has played Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers, in the West End and on tour, to critical ac-
claim. She was the fourth Nolan sister to play the role, earning them entry in to the Guinness Book of Records. Hailed as one of the best musicals of all time, Blood Brothers, written by award-winning playwright Willy Russell, has triumphed across the globe. Scooping up no less than four awards
for best musical in London and seven Tony Award nominations on Broadway, Blood Brothers is simply unmissable and unbeatable! This epic tale, of Liverpool life, ran in London’s West End for 24 years and exceeded 10,000 performances. It is one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving story of twin boys, separated at birth, only to be reunited by a twist of fate and a mother’s haunting secret. The memorable score includes A Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. Willy Russell is undeniably one of this country’s leading contemporary dramatists. His countless credits include Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine. Educating Rita, originally commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, enjoyed a two year run in the West End and was made into a movie, starring Michael Caine and Julie Walters. Shirley Valentine also made the move from stage to screen, in an enormously popular film, starring Pauline Collins and Tom Conti. Blood Brothers is directed by Bob Tomson and Bill Kenwright, with design by Andy Walmsley. Dan Samson is the sound designer, with Tom De Keyser as musical supervisor and Kelvin Towse as musical director. Tickets are available from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or at www.hawth.co.uk.
Following his highly-acclaimed New York and Philadelphia Billy Joel ‘Original Touring Band’ concerts, Elio Pace delivers this sensational, electrifying tour celebrating the phenomenal music of Billy Joel. Featuring the massive hits Uptown Girl, Just The Way You Are and My Life.

Pizza Express is celebrating the launch of its exciting new look restaurant in Horsham. Located in East Street, this restaurant has been totally transformed and features artwork paying tribute to Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the major Romantic poets, who was born in Horsham. Each PizzaExpress restaurant is individually designed
– often using well known places, people or historical events from the area as the basis. The interior of the Horsham restaurant has a range of collage artworks inspired by Shelley’s poetry and his story. The artworks combine pieces of text and imagery that give a contemporary interpretation of his work.

The illustrious history of our Horsham store dates back to 1925, when Messrs. Scott & Sargeant opened their premises at 26 East Street. The business flourished and grew and allowed the shop to take over the adjoining property. In 2004, nearly 80 years later, Scott & Sargeant became a Steamer Trading shop when the owners
decided to retire. When we had finished the shop had grown into no.28, next door, and acquired wonderful new spaces for displaying fabulous kitchenware – and even a café. Today, our Horsham store is a real emporium, with a fantastic selection of everything for the kitchen and table spread out over 7,000 sq.ft.

Recorder maestro Piers Adams coming to Crawley next month
Join recorder maestro, Piers Adams, and pianist, Howard Moody, in a special family concert of highflying recorder music. The programme will include medieval dances, baroque favourites, romantic showpieces, tango, gypsy dances, strange modern works and
the funkiest piece of recorder music you will ever hear - David Pugsley’s Groovy or What! A lively recital, informally introduced by the performers, alongside some audience participation. Bring your recorders along and join in! Piers Adams is one of the world’s
leading recorder players and a much-loved musician, who has given the instrument a broad popular appeal, through his concerts, broadcasts and recordings. He has been hailed in the international press as “superhuman… the reigning recorder virtuoso in the world today”; “intensely musical and astonishingly colourful” and being “in an instrumental class of his own”. Adams began his career by embarking on a period of study, with some of the leading players of the day (including Dutch pioneer Kees Boeke), winning numerous awards and competitions along the way. But he was quick to forge his own path, his natural performing flair at odds with the restrictions and traditions of the classical (and especially early) music scene. It was a chance encounter with a group of Hungarian gypsy musicians, whilst taking part in an early music festival in Belgium, which was to provide the inspiration for Adams, in the years to follow: this was music performed with unbridled freedom, heart-on-sleeve emotion and sheer, joyous virtuosity – and these facets have now become the hallmarks of Adams’ own style. Tickets for the October 4 performance: £12 (adult), £5 (child). To book, please call The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or book online at www.hawth.co.uk
DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT... We have been using the Resident and Clive G Hancocks subsequently, The District Post for Director advertising since the launch of the paper. Whilst it is difficult to quantify results, I would say that as a free paper, delivered around the whole Horsham District and picked up from selected places in the area, they are friendly to deal with, professional, very helpful with design and swift to print. Deadline is Wednesday for a Friday print and they have NEVER let us down! We use this paper exclusively. Because it is a free paper and the best known for that around the area, the circulation is getting bigger by the week/month and therefore I would recommend highly as THE advertising vehicle to use.

Are you market ready? Tim Cattini, Manager of Guy Leonard & Co in Horsham, gives advice on getting ready for the autumn property market. August is traditionally a quiet time in the property market. With so many families on holiday buying and selling homes takes a back step. But for some this is a very important time. This is the month that can be spent getting ready for the autumn market - as September is the month when things usually hot up again. Getting one’s own house in order has never been more important. Good condition and appearance are crucial to getting top price and beating the competition to the best buyers. Yes, selling property is a competition. There are other houses and apartments that are vying for buyers’ attention. So spending time and even some money in preparation can be very important. Tastes are changing all the time. What is in one year is out the next. When this relates to clothes keeping up-to-date is relatively easy. But property is a different matter altogether. However there are ways to ensure that a house is market ready without too much expense. So here are a few golden rules
when preparing your property for the market: Debug: All rooms should be kept particularly clean when buyers are on the prowl – especially kitchens and bathrooms. De-clutter: it is vital to make the space look as large as possible. There should be a place for books, magazines, clothes, kitchen utensils, etc. and all these things should be in their rightful places. Removing just one piece of furniture from a room can often make a big impact to the sense of space. De-colour: Gloss black, orange and purple walls may be some people’s idea of great interior design. But many buyers would run a mile. Repaint in white or light grey – it looks clean, offends no one and makes rooms look larger. The uplift in value should far outweigh the cost of the work and materials. De-smell: we are used to our own house odours but others aren’t. It’s best to remove spicy foods from the menu for a while. Open the windows; buy flowers; make some fresh coffee and perhaps light a good candle or two before potential buyers arrive.
De-noise: Does your property sound good? Is there loud music playing or an off-putting television in the background? Turn them off. Are there young children screaming? Turn them off too. Let peace reign. Or if there is ambient noise from outside such as traffic or aircraft play some low level calm music to sooth the ear and deflect attention. Finally don’t forget the first impression. You will never have a second chance. Most unkempt front gardens precede an unkempt house. Cut the grass. Prune the plants. Hide the dustbin. Store away the red plastic slide that had faded to pink in the sun. Follow these rules, price sensibly and you will be on your way to sweet-smelling selling success. You will be gone long before your fellow sellers - ever wake up and smell the coffee. Put another way, if you don’t love where you live no one else will! If you’d like some advice on selling your home in the current local property market, please contact Tim at Guy Leonard and Co on 014034 248222 or email timcattini@guyleonard.co.uk.

Horsham junior cricketers win the Sussex Festival Shield Junior Cricket Dave Smith – Sports Editor The Sussex County Junior Festival was founded in 1967 and consists of a series of matches where various teams play all week against other junior teams from around the County. The aim is to encourage clubs to
run colts sections and to bring more youngsters into the sport. During the 2015 Festival Week held at Eastergate Cricket Club the Horsham U13 team played superbly in their opening matches against Ifield, Three Bridges, Horley and Felbridge, and won all four games with maximum points. The final between Horsham and St
James Montefiore was a hard fought match with Horsham making 1847 in their allotted overs, while St James fell short on 164-8, leaving Horsham to take the U13 Festival Champions Shield home. For Horsham, Akshay Ramani was top scoring batsman during the week with a total of 335 runs and Manav Parekh top bowler with 8 wickets

If challenged to name some great British runners then Seb Coe, Mo Farah, Steve Cram and Roger Bannister would no doubt spring to mind; but what about Alfie Shrubb? Given the little that is written or spoken about him many will be thinking, probably with certain justification, who is Alfie Shrubb. Local man Alfie Shrubb was one of the finest runners this country has ever produced and perhaps awareness of him from the memorial races held each year in England and Canada will one day lead to him being mentioned along with the likes of Coe and Bannister. Alfred "Alfie" Shrubb was a late starter, his running career did not begin until he was twenty, having worked in the building trade throughout his teens. In 1899 Alfie met a man named F.J.Spence near his home in Slinfold. Spence, who was a well known runner and member of the local athletic club, was on his way to a large house fire in
Southwater and suggested Alfie ran with him to see the blaze. Afie - who had not attempted to run at any great speed over any distance before - beat the fire engine to the scene and the impressed Spence convinced Alfie to join him at Horsham Blue Star Harriers Running Club.
Alfie quickly became a respected runner firstly as an amateur between 1899 and 1905 and then professionally, competing regularly until his retirement from competitive running in 1912. In his career Alfie
won over 1000 of the 1800 races he took part in. He excelled in distances less than 15 miles, in which he was virtually unbeatable, often taking on four man relay teams to create a ‘bit of competition’. One memorable day on November 4, 1904, at Ibrox stadium in Glasgow he broke the world one hour record as well as all the amateur records from six to eleven miles, and all the professional records from eight to eleven miles; altogether on this one incredible day he set 28 world records. In 1928 Alfie moved to Canada and loved it so much he remained there until his death in 1964. Each year the Alf Shrubb Memorial race is run over a 5 mile cross country course in his home town of Slinfold, starting and finishing at Slinfold Cricket Club. This year’s race will be held on Sunday October 4 when, in addition to a £150 Cash Prize for the first athlete to beat the course record of 25.42 minutes, all competitors will receive a replica of the medal awarded to Shrubb when he broke the world 3 mile record in 1902. Entry forms are obtainable from the www.sussexraces.co.uk and at Up and Running 20 Queen Street, Horsham

Lotus F1 Team’s Third and Reserve Driver Jolyon Palmer will be back in action today at the practice sessions for the Italian Grand Prix at the famous Monza circuit. Monza has been a favourable hunting ground for Jolyon throughout his career with the Southwater driver claiming three victories on the 3.6-mile circuit. He took his first two wins in 2010, as he scored a double victory at the third round of that year’s FIA Formula Two season, on his way to finishing second in the championship. Jolyon also produced stunning drives in both of last year’s GP2 races at Monza, storming through the field in the feature race to claim an eighth-place finish and pole position for the sprint race. He converted that into a memorable victory to extend his championship lead in what proved a key moment on his way to clinching the 2014 GP2 title.
Jolyon Palmer will drive at Monza this weekend Jolyon said: “Monza is one of my favourite tracks having won there in both F2 and GP2. It's really low down-force with long straights and huge top speeds of around 370km/h, so I'm looking forward to driving it
in an F1 car for the first time. It was fantastic for the team to get a podium in Spa and we are all hopeful of another strong performance this weekend, where the circuit should suit us again."
Gemma gets a call up to British squad
Gemma Tattersall and Artic Soul Equestrian Dave Smith – Sports Editor Horsham eventer Gemma Tattersall was left speechless by her call-up for her first senior European Championships but she is determined to make next month’s outing the first of many. Tattersall is part of a 12-strong Great Britain team, who will travel to Blair Castle in Scotland for the Cham-
pionships from September 10-13. The 30-year-old has previous excelled when competing at a high level having won team gold with Great Britain at Young Rider level in 2005 and 2006 while earlier this year Tattersall and her horse Arctic Soul finished 16th at Badminton and third at the Burgham International. Despite those results, her call-up still came as a surprise although she intends to take full advantage of the
opportunity, especially with the likes of Olympic medallists William FoxPitt, Pippa Funnell and Nicola Wilson on the same team as her. “It’s my first call up to the senior team for the Championships and I didn’t really know what to say to start with, which is fairly rare for me,” she said. “I was hopeful of a call-up but in this country we have so many amazing riders and horses. My aim is a top-ten finish; I would be absolutely over the moon with that. It would be beyond my wildest dreams to make Rio for next year’s Olympics, but I feel like I could do it.” She praised her 12-year-old horse Artic Soul, saying she believes he is more than capable of delivering the goods next month. “Artic Soul’s huge strength is the cross-country,” she added. “He’s an incredibly fast horse and he’s a real machine across the country.” The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials (September 3 - 6) has been established as a major international equestrian and social event in the autumn sporting calendar for over 50 years. YM beat Dockers to progress in FA Cup Photos by Clive Turner
Dave Brown scored two goals in YM's victory Sunday 30th August 2015 - FA Cup Preliminary Round Erith Town 2 – 4 Horsham YMCA 4 Football Tom Norris – Horsham YMCA Horsham YMCA’s unbeaten start to the season continued on Sunday, as they saw off Southern Counties East League side Erith Town 4-2 in the Preliminary Round of the Emirates FA Cup.
Dave Brown’s twenty-ninth minute opener was cancelled out just before half time by Dockers front man Tom Garrick, but three YM goals in seventeen second half minutes from Dan Evans, Matt Crane and Brown again secured a commanding lead, before Garrick added a consolatory second late on. What made the win even more impressive for Peter Buckland’s side was that they were without unavailable regulars Simon Lockwood, Sam Schaaf, Luke Gedling
and Anthony Hibbert, whilst both Dean Carden and Luc Doherty picked up injuries during the warm up, which halted them from featuring. Sunday’s victory cements YM’s place in the competition’s First Round Qualifying, where they will now host Ryman Premier League Burgess Hill Town at Gorings Mead on Saturday September 12. YM manager Buckland commented: “When you consider that we’ve got no Lockwood, no Hibbert, no
YM`s `keeper Mark Fox halts an Erith Town attack Gedling, no Schaaf, and then in the warm up, after deciding on an eleven, I lose Luc Doherty and Dean Carden at half past two, I really think it was a tremendous performance. We were easily in the game at half time, and on the slope we just had to turn them quick and that’s what happened. I think in the end we were comfortable winners. Our big players performed today. I thought that Ash [Dugdale] was man of the match – he covered every blade of grass out there. Craney
[Matt Crane] and Gathern were immense and Browny [Dave Brown] was really on it. My own personal ambition to get through today was that I really wanted to clash swords with Burgess Hill in the next round. I’m really looking forward to that now.” YM: Fox, D. Sullivan, Crane, Gathern, Evans, D. Brown, Dugdale, Hunter, (Cheesman 59) J. Brown (Wood 86) Wright, N. Sullivan Unused subs: Doherty, H. Horner, Carden.
Heath score eight against East Preston Fred hopes interest will lead to a World Cup Saturday August 29 - SCFL Peter Bentley Cup Broadbridge Heath 8 - 1 East Preston Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor After Heath’s awful midweek performance against Pagham the final score line and dominating performance in this match was not to be predicted. Manager Painter predictably made a number of changes from the team that played midweek including debuts for Dan Sandell and loanee Tom Familton. Heath went for it from the whistle peppering the East Preston goal with
relentless waves of attacks. The inevitable goal came in the 13th minute when Ollie Moore got on the end of Bhujun’s cross to find the bottom corner. New boy Familton made it two 8 minutes later and just before the break Bhujun made it three; effectively ending it as a contest by half time. With 60 minutes on the clock it was four, Moore grabbing his second by smashing a shot into the roof of the net. 3 minutes later Rob Godfrey got in on the act by hammering in a Scott Weller cross for number five. In virtually their first attack East Preston pulled a goal back on 68 minutes when visiting striker Alfie Gritt scored from a tight angle. Almost from the restart Stuart Chester
scored the goal of the game when he found the net from the edge of the area which was followed minutes later by Bhujun’s second of the game and Heath’s seventh. There was still time for Moore to grab his hat-trick when he converted from the spot in the dying seconds. Painter described the Pagham performance as one of the worse he could remember - after this rout he was delighted – but this seasons Jekyll and Hyde Heath performances will need to gain some consistency. Heath Team: M.Chester, Sultan, S.Chester (Helsdown 75), Flack (Balfour 25), Familton, Waddingham, Godfrey, Sandell (D.Robinson 75), Moore, Bhujun, Weller.
Draw at Deal keeps Hornets hopes alive Saturday 29th August 2015 - FA Cup Preliminary Round Deal Town 1 – 1 Horsham Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor Horsham took the long trip down to the East Kent coast to face Deal in the FA Cup in what was a difficult looking tie in which to keep their FA Cup hopes alive. Deal came quickly out of the blocks putting the Hornets under pressure from the start with the home sides strikers Coyne and Smith both causing numerous problems for the Horsham defence. In a rare attack Hor-
sham did come close when a Shelley header clipped the bar but the goal the home side deserved finally came when a misplaced kick from Horsham ‘keeper Williams resulted in Deals Coyne’s ending up scoring to give his team the half time lead. Deal continued to boss the play in the second half and it took a goal line clearance from Ashley Jones to prevent the home side going two up. Di Paola brought on Terry Dodd just before the hour, the striker having signed from Bognor Regis the day before, along with Kevin Keehan and Niall O’Hagan and the changes sparked life into the Hornets. The rejuvenated Hornets pressed
forward and from a Pamment corner Jordan Clark met the ball on the run leaving the Deal keeper Waymark with no chance. The Hornets now went for the win and new boy Dodd had two good chances to seal what would have been a memorable victory; unfortunately he put one over the bar and the other well wide to leave the score even at the whistle and Horsham still without a win in Kent for three years. Horsham Team: Williams, Duncan, Knee, Clark, Jones, O’Hagan (Keehan 55) Shelley, Brad Lewis (Dodd 55) Murfin, Pamment, Boswell (Charles).
Cricket Dave Smith – Sports Editor Horsham’s Fred Bridges insists there is more than just results to play for in next month’s first international physical disability cricket tournament as the England star is hoping it will lead to the introduction of a World Cup. Physical disability cricket is still in its infancy, with an England national team being launched in 2009 and to date England and Pakistan are the only countries to have sides. But next month Broadbridge Heath CC’s Bridges will be part of the England team that competes in the sport’s first multi-nation competition, with India, Afghanistan and hosts Bangladesh joining England and Pakistan at the International T20 Tournament for p e o p l e with Physical Disabilities. The 24-yearold admits he feels that this inaugural tournament should be the start of something spe-
cial for physical disability cricket with the profile of the game having increased significantly in recent years. Fred said "The opportunities in disability cricket are increasing all the time so hopefully in the future that will lead to a World Cup and hopefully with the coverage that we are getting it will help with that in the future. It's a wonderful opportunity to be going out to Bangladesh. We've been training hard as a squad and it's a really exciting opportunity for all of the team to hopefully win the series.” England will play all four teams between September 2 and 8 as part of a league table, with the top two taking part in the final on September 10. The left-arm spinner added: "The series is a T20 tournament so w e ' v e been working on power hitting and our bowling skills and an attacking brand of fielding.” Updates on the England PD team in Bangladesh can be seen at www.ecb.co.uk or by follow on Twitter @ECB_Cricket. All County Cricket Boards are now running disability cricket programmes, email disabilitycricket@ecb.co.uk to get involved.

Saturday August 29 - Sussex Premier League Roffey 182 All Out (47 overs) Billingshurst 86 All Out (23.5 overs) Roffey won by 96 runs
Roffey captain Josh Fleming
After a minute’s silence to remember the victims of the Shoreham air disaster the match started under blue skies but ended in gloomy damp. Roffey however overcame the rain stoppages to pull off a vital win, keeping them four points clear of East Grinstead who maintained their challenge by beating Bexhill. Roffey prefer to chase but were inserted to face Sussex’s Abidine Sakande and Chris Liddle. An early wicket went down until 33 from Mike Norris and 69 from Rohit Jagota enabled them to set a demand-
ing target on the lush green outfield, despite 5-66 from Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi and Ben Williams’s 3-54, the pair again bowling in tandem to great effect. The innings featured sightscreen-clearing sixes from Rohit and two county standard catches – a running overhead gem by Andy Barr and a full stretch dive by Stuart Barber, and, as Roffey pressed on, three stumpings by Richard Brown. At the half way stage Roffey captain Josh Fleming said: “150 is a par score in these conditions – the wicket is slow, but the ball is turning and seaming. I’m pleased with our total.” Rain breaks caused frustration but when Billingshurst batted they were soon in trouble at 17-3. Stuart Barber made 24 and Chris Liddle 34 but after Leigh Harrison with 3-27 saw off the upper order, George Fleming, unchanged, took 4-47 and Ben Manenti chipped in with 2-4, Roffey using just the three bowlers. Matt Davies pouched four catches, a run out polishing off Billingshurst.
George told the District Post: “It nibbled about off the pitch and they kept nicking it to Matt behind the stumps. Fortunately we were able to keep the ball surprisingly dry.” Josh said: “I feel tired – drained! It was stressful coming off and on and not knowing whether we could play, especially as we knew East Grinstead were going well at Bexhill. The umpires were excellent in keeping the game going – and the groundstaff, too, and Billingshurst wanted to play, so we got the game in - with a good result for us!” Tomorrow (Saturday September 3), on the final Saturday of the season, Roffey host bottom of the table Middleton, while Billingshurst, sixth and probably safe but still in need of points, travel to relegation threatened Cuckfield, with Eastbourne and Brighton also in the danger zone. Horsham are fifth - their game against Cuckfield was abandoned last Saturday - and tomorrow, in a game of great significance to Roffey, travel to East Grinstead.
YM and Heath play out goalless stalemate Horsham defeated in FA Cup Photo by Clive Turner
Heath keeper Michael Chester deals with a rare YM threat Tuesday September 1- SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 0 – 0 Horsham YMCA Football Tom Norris – Horsham YMCA Horsham YMCA and near neighbours Broadbridge Heath took a point apiece from a dull local
derby, as they drew 0-0 in Premier Division action on Tuesday evening. There were just four shots on target during the entire ninety minutes, as a lack of creativity at either end of the field saw both sides fail to break the deadlock. After a tedious first half, the Bears enjoyed the better of a slightly improved second period,
and perhaps looked the more likely to score during a spell of sustained pressure. But they, like YM, failed to convert the few chances they did create and the two sides shared the spoils of a dreary encounter. YM manager Peter Buckland commented: “I said to our coaching staff beforehand that if we could come away from here undefeated, under the circumstances, I’d be quite happy. All things considered, I’m reasonably pleased with a 0-0. I can forgive you for thinking that there was a lack of creativity, and there was, but it was almost by design. They [Broadbridge Heath] were pressing the ball and playing 4-51, so you’ve got to try and shut it down in that midfield. I think that they probably had more goal scoring opportunities than us, but having said that we did have opportunities to nick the game. The players were running on empty the last ten to fifteen minutes. I think it is a big ask to come here and play in a local derby that close to an FA Cup game. Maybe we should have asked for a postponement until Wednesday when we knew our FA Cup fixture had to be switched to the Sunday.” Broadbridge Heath Team: M. Chester, Sultan, S. Chester, Balfour, Familton, Waddingham, Moore, Godfrey (Wragg 85) Andrade, Bhujun (Sandell 92) Weller (Robinson 89) Unused sub: Goodwin. YM Team: Lockwood, Doherty, Gathern, Crane, Evans, Dugdale, Gedling, D. Sullivan, Wright, J. Brown (Hunter 66), N. Sullivan. Unused subs: Schaaf, White, Wood, Cheesman.

A minutes silence for the victims of the Shoreham jet crash Monday August 31 – FA Cup replay Horsham 1 - 2 Deal Town Football Martin Read – Sports Reporter A lack lustre first half display at Gorings Mead cost Horsham the contest that they might easily have won. The game got underway after a minute’s silence to remember Matt Grimstone and Jacob Schilt, Worthing United players, victims of the Shoreham Air Show tragedy. Poignantly, Deal Town were the last team to play Worthing before the crash. In this second encounter between Horsham and Deal in 48 hours – the first game was drawn 1-1 on the Kent coast – Horsham applied early pressure with two well-structured attacks. But, Deal opened the scoring with an easy Charlie Walsh goal against the run of play. Horsham soon hit the bar before Deal triggered thrusting runs, kept at bay until Ryan Philpott put the visitors further ahead after a failed clearance on the rebound from two Horsham corners. Two minutes later Horsham netted an offside goal and then had a corner headed away before shooting wide three times, once with
Hornets new signing Terry Dodd only the keeper to beat. Starting the second half two goals adrift despite creating an equal number of scoring opportunities, Horsham responded more positively but, crucially captain Joe Shelley missed a penalty. Amid a welter of yellow cards – mostly against Deal, but followed by a red apiece – Kieran Pamment did reduce the deficit and although Horsham kept pressing for the remaining 25 minutes, earning a battery of corners, the Deal defence held firm, keeper Chris Whymark having an outstanding game. Horsham last played Deal in the cup 23 years ago, losing 6-1 at Queen Street, this game was far closer, but sadly with the same result. Displeased Horsham CEO John Lines told the District Post: “We’ve only got ourselves to blame – you can’t give away two goals and miss a penalty and expect to win the game.” Horsham return to cup action – with a home FA Vase tie against Epsom & Ewell on Sunday before hosting Pagham in the Peter Bentley Cup on Tuesday evening. Horsham team: Williams, Storrie (Hunt) Knee, Keehan, Jones, Clark, Shelley, Lewis (O’Hagan) Murfin, Pamment, Dodd. Unused subs: Chadwick, Duncan, Charles, Hadi, Boswell.
