Driver responsible for death of local man to be deported Phil dennett News Editor
An illegal immigrant who knocked down and killed a cyclist in Horsham will be deported to Albania after he serves a jail sentence. Zisi Lushi was carrying fake “ID” documents and had no driving licence when he struck cyclist Michael Dixon in Kerves Lane, Horsham, after taking his brother's silver Citroen C2 despite also having no insurance. 65-year-old Mr Dixon, of Trundle Mead, Horsham, died at the scene. Mr Dixon was cycling south in Kerves Lane just before 11am on December 8 when Lushi, who was heading north, lost control of the Citroen and swerved across the road, hitting Mr Dixon and crashing the car into a hedge. Lushi, who is originally from Albania, was carrying fake identification that claimed his name was Luigi Dannile. The 27-yearold had bought the indentification after entering the country illegally on the back of a lorry. At Hove Crown Court on Friday last week he pleaded guilty to
causing death while driving without a licence and without insurance. He was found not guilty of causing death by dangerous driving but was convicted of causing death by careless driving. When Lushi, of Broadwater Lane, Copsale, near Horsham, appeared at the same court on Monday he was jailed for 14 months and told he would be deported to Albania after he had served his sentence. Sergeant Alan Spicer, of Sussex and Surrey roads policing unit, said: "Lushi had no good reason to be behind the wheel. "It is not clear why he lost control of the Citroen but the combination of the vehicles' tyres being in a dangerous condition and Lushi being an unqualified driver contributed to what happened. "Lushi's decision to drive that day cost Mr Dixon his life. His disregard for the law means that he is now in prison. "Driving without a licence is a serious offence that puts not just unqualified drivers but other road uers in danger. If you see someone driving who you know does not have a licence please contact us so we can take action before someone else is seriously hurt or even killed." After the sentencing Mr Dixon's

family said in a statement: "There are no winners in this case and Mr Lushi will have to live with the knowledge that his actions on the morning of 8 December 2014 ultimately took away the innocent life of a much loved husband, father, grandfather and friend to so many. he had achieved so much but we all know he had so much more to give. "As a family we would like to thank the police for all their ongoing support and assistance since the incident happened. We will now have to come to terms with our loss and the sentence given, before moving forward in
the knowledge that Dad's life, achievements and exceptional spirit will live strong in our memories forever." Anyone with information about dangerous or unlicensed drivers should call 101 or report them atwww.operationcrackdown.co.uk. If you see dangerousor uninsured drivers, please call 999.

Technology Singer urges kids to “Beat cyber bullies” on trial at the Library Customers are being asked for their views on latest technology at Horsham library. They can try a range of new devices and software, including an Apple iPad Air2, Microsoft Windows Surface Pro 3, Samsung Galaxy Tab S and HP Chromebook that are being piloted. Currently, all libraries have standard PCs that customers can use for free. Now West Sussex County Council wants to know over the next few months what the public thinks of the more modern equipment. David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for residents’ services with responsibility for the library service, said: “We know that technology has moved on so much in the last few years. “The PCs in our libraries are really well used but the time has come to upgrade our equipment and we want to test out some more modern devices to see how they go down with customers. “All the devices are currently in Horsham Library and we’re asking people to pop in and have a go. We’re simply asking for customers’ feedback which will help us make a decision about what to order for our other libraries." Horsham Library, in Lower Tanbridge Way, is open from 9am-7pm Monday to Friday and 9am-5pm on Saturdays. The equipment will be in the library until September.
The anti-bullying slogan “Don’t be mean behind the screen” was singer Rich Cottell’s big message to students on his tour. Emphasising the need to combat cyber bullying and pay attention to on-line safety Rich told Weald School pupils about his passion for getting the message across. Rich, a recently signed singersongwriter who has supported acts such as The Wanted and Conor Maynard, visited Billingshurst as part of his year-long online “Safety and Cyber Bullying School Tour” in partnership with Life Skills Education CIC. Rich told the students: “It’s about delivering a positive message and empowering kids to stay
safe online.” The school said that his musical performance, along with his infectious ‘feel good’ attitude reinforced the theme that the school was already delivering to students. Rich spoke openly about his experience of cyber bullying, explaining the significant effect it can have on individuals and the pressures young people face online, in particular the pressure to reveal too much information about themselves, or to post pictures of themselves they would not want others to see later. He urged students to stay safe online and keep control by checking account settings to make everything is private; being aware of

stranger danger and taking the time to think before you post. Rich then performed some of his material and current hits which had the students dancing in the aisle. One year eight student said: “I learned a lot. I’m going home to check that all my accounts are private.” Karen Furse, assistant head teacher at The Weald said: “The internet is a big part of young people’s lives and can be a really positive tool. Messages such as the ones we received from Rich Cottell help to remind us that, in order to benefit from it, we need to constantly remember to be vigilant and safe at all times.”

Solar community could create 500 jobs for the district
Councillors are backing proposals for a solar-powered housing, business and entertainments centre that could bring about 500 jobs to an old cement works site. One of the main features of the eco-friendly development at the former Upper Beeding cement works would be 600 “earth sheltered” holiday homes rented out on 12year leases at between £90,000 and £285,000. There would also be 50 “affordable” eco workers homes costing about £170,000 each. The estimated initial cost of about £104million would be offset by housing income, and money from five restaurants, a kayak centre, shopping, an entertainments centre, two hotels and other income-generators. Several potential projects have been suggested for the large site,
also known as Shoreham cement works, since the 1990s but none have yet come to fruition. The latest one is from the Off-Grid team with details drawn up by ZEDfactory planning specialists. Under the project the existing buildings would be converted and the bus depot and museum of historic busses would also be kept. The project is backed by local parish councillors, but any plans would later have to go before Horsham district councillors should a planning application be submitted. The proposal is also being studied closely by Upper Beeding Parish Council as it considers future development in the area. Cllr Sean Teatum, who leads the council’s team preparing the important Neighbourhood Plan, confirmed to the Post this week: “This project is part of the Upper Beeding Neigh-
bourhood Plan and does have the support of the Parish Council.” There would be a 1.5 megwatt electric solar farm and vehicles on the site would be powered by 500 watt lithium batteries to create an “offgrid” environment”. It is also expected that many jobs would be created if the scheme gets built. Among the facilities an outdoor amphitheatre and a stage would also be provided. In statement on the project ZEDfactory says: Set against the current global need to cut carbon emissions the project will offer the chance to experience low impact living first hand - The heart of the project gives visitors to the National Park a chance to sample a snapshot of a zero carbon / zero waste future that is fun and actually works well.” The site was last used as a cement works nearly 25 years ago and hous-
ing has been suggested as one use. http://www.zedfactory.com/projects_worldwide.html On the website, the project team states: “The Off Grid Project was formed as a positive response to a series of negative proposals put forward for The Shoreham Cement Works site one of the biggest brown field sites in the South East situated in the Heart of the South Downs national Park. “Working with and building on the local Parishes neighborhood plan - A team of experienced architects, project managers and financial advisers have put together a regeneration master plan that will meet the needs of the local community while enhancing the public experience of the National Park. “The proposal will bring new life and employment opportunities into
the area within a vibrant zero energy development containing an entertainment venue for open air performance. “Our proposal uses landscaped terraces to repair an industrial scar on this cherished part of the countryside. “We will sensitively create desirable holiday accommodation within a vaulted amphitheatre that can host the worlds leading musicians and performers. We will return plants and wildlife to this degraded environment and generate all running power from on-site renewable energy. The iconic industrial buildings will be retained, renovated and enhanced with the addition of a translucent solar roof. Our proposal will safeguard existing jobs and create new employment that responds to the unique context of the national park.”

Council chairman Brian O’Connell praises volunteers as he hands over
Volunteers are praised for their role in a message to Post readers from the outgoing 2015-16 Horsham District Council chairman. Cllr Brian O’Connell, of Henfield, said as he handed over to Cllr Tricia Youtan: “As I come to the end of my year as the 41st chairman of Horsham District Council I would like to reflect on some of the highlights and achievements of the year. “When taking office last year my goal was to raise the profile of the chairman and of the civic side of the work carried out by this council. I believe it is extremely important that the council retains its identity
and that our history in this district is remembered and celebrated. “My year of office marked the 100th Anniversary of World War 1 and I was both proud and privileged to attend remembrance ceremonies across the district representing the council It gave me the opportunity to work with the British Legion who carry out fantastic work locally, looking after survivors of war and supporting their families. “November 2014 also saw the opening of the new wetlands project at Chesworth Farm. This project was to restore the natural habitat of the Riverside Field, which is
next to the River Arun, to what it was many years ago and at the same time, stop the extensive erosion of the riverbank. “The project was achieved as a result of a joint initiative between the Friends of Chesworth Farm and the council. A fantastic example of community collaboration. “With Christmas, the council’s thoughts were focused on the less fortunate in our community. To this end, the Chairman’s Trust and the Trustees work hard fundraising throughout the year to be able to make donations to those in need. This year we raised nearly £10,000 and given that this was only the second year of operation for the Trust, this was truly a magnificent achievement. “In conclusion, I think the most striking lesson that I have learned during the year is that along with performing all the civic duties that this role entails, it is the voluntary organisations and those people who give of their time freely for the benefit of others that are really some of the most important positive contributors in the district. They deserve all the support that we as a council can give them, and the chairman, as the representative of the council , must continue to work tirelessly to raise the profile of these organisations. “Finally, I would take this opportunity to wish the new Chairperson Cllr. Tricia Youtan every success for the coming year. I know that she will do a fantastic job for the residents of Horsham district.”
A caged elephant is being used to trumpet a good cause. Local charity West Sussex Mediation Service has started a campaign to get the beasts released. The charity says it cannot reveal the name of the incarcerated creature at the moment, but says the poor lost soul is desperate to gain its freedom so that it can join all the other elephants on the Rotary Club of Horsham’s Elephant Trail that takes place from July 25- August 30 in and around Horsham. The event is set to promote Horsham town and the surrounding areas throughout the summer holidays whilst at the same time fundraising for local charities and the Horshambased Born Free Foundation. The charity has so far been unable to find a partner business willing to sponsor the elephant, despite its best efforts. Service co-ordinator Nick Handley said: ““There can be a tendency for better known,
good causes to be chosen instead of smaller fry like our local charity. However, we believe that we are worthy, as we do some great work in the local community and help change lives for the better.”In order to ‘FREE the Horsham One’ (and keep it safe meanwhile), the charity asks that members of the public make a small donation to West Sussex Mediation Service. The money will go towards the initial cost of acquiring an Elephant to partake in the Trail. The charity will provide a personal photo of the fully decorated elephant, which they believe is set to become the pride of the herd! If anyone is willing to display a ‘Free the Horsham One’ campaign poster in their window, they are requested to contact the charity on 01403 257800. Details on the Campaign can be found on the charity’s blog http:// www.wsms.org.uk/mediationnews/free-the-horsham-one.

When tragedy came to the life of Joe Brocking he later overcame his grief to turn it into something more positive. As part of Volunteers Week he has spoken passionately about the satisfaction he gets helping people who are being cared for by a hospice. Joe, 69, who has three daughters, is a volunteer driver for St Catherine’s and also helps the fundraising team. He lost his wife at only 45 in 1999 to a terminal illness and after retiring from construction industry thought about volunteer work. Joe told the Post: “I was not sure how to go about it. One Saturday afternoon I went into a St. Catherine's show and enquired about the volunteering rolls St. Catherine's offered. I filled an application form in on line and had a reply to go for an interview and got accepted, and started as a driver taking patients to day hospice. “Then three weeks later I stared to help out in the fundraising office, this grew into me carrying out other rolls within the hospice. “I started volunteering for St Catherine’s two years ago and it feels like I’ve been here forever. “After 50 years in the construction industry, I never dreamed I’d do anything like this. But once I’d retired, I’m not the kind of person to just sit at home.” Joe has found the work a two-way benefit. He enjoys helping others and he is also inspired by people he meets. Joe said: “Now, I drive patients to and from their appointments. I drove my first patient for six months, she was such a character and I learnt a lot from seeing her through her journey. Sometimes,
when you pick people up they’re feeling down but going out lifts them. The day is special and that’s why I do it. “I can make someone’s day brighter. It’s the most satisfying thing you can ever do and if there’s one thing I do last on earth, it’ll be to drive a patient.” When he is not driving Joe helps the fundraising team with distributing leaflets, marshalling events and street collections. He said: “Joining the team at St Catherine’s is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done – I wish I was 20 years younger. It’s the nicest place and when I walk in the door, there’s always a smile. “Volunteering here has also made me a better person; I listen more. I love my volunteering days and I’m

here to stay. “I hope my story inspires people to consider volunteering for St Catherine’s too, to help provide vital services to patients and their families in our local community”. Each year, more than 800 volunteers, aged between 14 and 96, play an essential part in delivering services for St Catherine’s Hospice. Coming from across Surrey and Sussex, they take on varied roles from gardeners and charity shop assistants to ward support and catering support or hospitality. Between them they volunteer more than 38,000 hours a year and contribute time worth more than £300,000 per year. Anyone wishing to volunteer can contact the hospice on 01293 447333.
From Horsham to Morocco for charity Boys from Christ’s Hospital School have notched up the distance from Horsham to Morocco without leaving the town to raise money for two charities. The youngsters rowed, cycled, swam or ran the equivalent distance of 1750 kilometres to raise more than £2,300 for Cancer Research UK and My New Hair, causes close to the heart of some of the boys. They tackled the challenge at Bluecoat sports centre with a fivehour limit to eat up the miles.
Pupils from the Maine B boarding house at Christ’s Hospital school organised and took part in the challenge. The school calculated that the distance achieved was the equivalent of travelling from the town to exotic Morocco. The Housemaster of Maine B, David Mulae, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the boys. There were some outstanding personal achievements and the team spirit was quite amazing.”

Life saving aircrews remembered Cotswold Outdoor open
a new store in Horsham
The courage of wartime aircrews who risked their lives 70 years ago to help starving Dutch people was remembered at Storrington. On 29 April 1945, 3,100 flights were made by RAF Bomber Command and 2,200 by the US Army Air Force, dropping 11,000 tonnes of food to desperate Dutch citizens under German occupation. Staff and residents at Care South’s Sussexdown care home in Storrington welcomed some very
special guests earlier this week, when they hosted a reunion lunch to commemorate Dutch Day and Operation Manna. The event, organised by the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) Amsterdam Branch, remembered Operations Manna and Chowhound, food aid flights organised by the Allies in response to the severe food shortages in Holland This year’s reunion luncheon was attended by a large number of
RAFA branch members and guests, including special guests John Oliver Lancaster, a 96- year- old ex-WWII bomber pilot and former test pilot, and Sarah Waugh, overseas director for RAFA. Representatives from the RAFA Amsterdam Committee, RAFA Shoreham Air Show and Shoreham Airport, Dutch Days sponsors, pilots and aircraft owners and RAFA members from local branches also attended.

Bone-shaped medals for charity walkers at Bark in the Park Every dog had its day as Horsham’s Bark in the Park raised money to help provide services for terminal ill people. The dog walk with a difference took place as pets of all shapes and sizes took their owners for a stroll at Chesworth Farm on a scenic three kilometre route to raise money for St Catherine's Hospice. Bark in the Park has been held at Horsham since 2013, with local dogs helping towards the £15,000 St Catherine’s needs every day to provide free end of life care to terminally ill people and their loved ones. Every dog that followed the route on Sunday was rewarded with a drink and also a bone-shaped medal to take home, whilst their human friends enjoyed refreshments and the chance to socialise with other
dog owners and their families. Gabi Field, Community Fundraiser for Sussex, said: “Horsham is the second largest recipient of St Catherine’s care, so it was great to see so many people supporting their local hospice. Bark in the Park is a great way to support St Catherine’s whilst having fun and we were delighted that so many Horsham people came along”. Josie Cosham, director of Maltman Cosham Veterinary Clinic which sponsors Bark in the Park, said: "We couldn't pass up the opportunity to sponsor this event again to help St Catherine's provide its vital care. Bark in the Park is a fantastic, different way to support a very worthwhile local charity, to enjoy the beautiful countryside and spend time with your favourite four-legged friend.
Women’s car care day at local garage a success
Local women were provided with the skills for basic car maintenance at a special workshop at Station Garage in Horsham. The group was shown how to change tyres and check oil and water levels. They put their newly acquired skills to the test with a timed tyre changing challenge. James Thorpe, dealer principal at Station Garage, said: “We were delighted to host this special Ladies Night. “Car maintenance is presumed by
some to be a masculine-orientated skill, but our female customers frequently express interest in the learning about what’s under a cars’ bonnet so we were more than happy to help. “As technology has advanced in recent years, vehicle care has become more automated but we strongly believe that it’s important for everyone to go back to basics in order to learn how to care for their cars as you never know when you might need this practical knowledge.”
Bicycle shop and country club work 'in tandem' to offer prize bike to public Prestigious local companies, Slinfold Golf & Country Club and The Cycle Shop, are working together to offer an amazing chance to win a bike worth £750, including a £185 bespoke bike fitting. The Cycle Shop's strength is focused on customer service. When a bike is sold, all fitting and adjustments are catered to the individual's needs. Slinfold is also customer service focused. Their aim is to help every individual achieve their lifestyle goals. To be in with a chance to win the bike, our members either refer a friend to join in the month of June, or a person joins in June – their names will go into the prize draw and a name picked at random.

New history book shows the changes of a turbulent Bishopric
A new book brings to life the colourful history of the Bishopric area of Horsham. As a prominent street it was once the place for those who rebelled against the establishment, where groups of like-minded people met weekly to preach revolution and dissent against Church and State. Now it is the scene of multimillion pound investment and transformation. The story of the street is told in a new fully illustrated publication “The Bishopric - A Biography” published by Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum. The Bishopric has a remarkable history, from princes of the Vatican to pipe-making paupers. The name the Bishopric derives from its one time owner, the Archbishop of Canterbury, when that position was part of the Roman
Catholic Church. Even by 1550 the Bishopric was a flourishing market site. It had a medieval market cross, possibly even a market hall, taking the name Lynd Cross from lime wood. Later in the 18th century the area developed a distinct feature as a place of settlement for religious groups who were not part of the establishment. From Quakers, Roman Catholics, Baptists and Independents they all settled there. By the end of the century, the once wealthy area with large houses had slumped in status, developing the name the Rookery; not an area of rooks but an area of low life and crime. Later the name would be adopted by the area’s football team as a photograph in the book shows. Even later still in the 1930s a developer was going to call the Davies estate Rookery, until someone told
him the real meaning. By the death of Victoria in 1901 the Bishopric was a flourishing area with a bustling market and two breweries. In the more recent past the area developed a row of shops; one run as a sports shop by the husband of author Daphne De Maurier. It was still seen as a distinctly different area of Horsham, serving the growing community to the west of the town. Its range of shops and trades was explored in detail in the directory drawn up by Friend of Horsham Museum volunteer Julie Mitchell. The new book joins another street biography, West Street, both published and available only from Horsham Museum. It contains stories and more than 40 images of a part of Horsham that today is undergoing one of many transformations it has seen in its 100-year history.

Mulch Ado About Nothing Guy Deakins Gardening
My apologies for anybody looking for my lecture list in the last article. I do not of course work for Planet PR. My web address is www.guydeakinsgardening.com. This week I have been asking myself that vital question. To mulch or not to mulch ( whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous gardening fortune?) Well, it depends. If you mean mulch now with a good, rich compost then yes, do so. This will enrich the bed, feed the plants, keep the soil moist for longer and extend the longevity of the plants. If whilst you are doing it, you can add a good mixture of blood, fish and bone, the
better your garden will like it. The blood provides an instant fix of nitrogen, the fish - a longer term solution - the bone, and even longer term offering. Organic too. If on the other hand, you are thinking of mulching with 'landscape bark' to suppress the weeds, then don't bother - that is unless you are planning a mulch 4 to 6 inches thick. Here's the rub. Bark does not do anything for your garden except offer the Blackbirds s o m e thing to t h r o w around. It robs the soil of vital nutrients as the bacteria and fungi that break it down use up vital nitrogen to do so. It adds to the acidity of your soil in the process too. To be frank, it looks pretty for about a week and then the weeds come back, but now instead of a clear run with the hoe, you have to get down on your hands and knees to separate the proverbial wheat from the
chaff. Ultimately leaving you to grunt and sweat under a weary life all the same with a slighter lighter pocket. Quite simply put, it is an industry lie - the result of the wood industry having leftover materials and nothing to do with them. My advice, use it on paths and nowhere else. The best mulch I ever found was cocoa husks, a waste material from the chocolate industry, but they have long since disappeared from the shops. The structure of your soil is vitally important, but so is the knowledge to unlock the goodness. Locally to Horsham, we have a heavy marl. Clay in other words. It may surprise you to know, clay is full of nutrients, but its structure prevents much of this nutrient being released. One way of getting to the good stuff is by generating vast electric storms. That's right. Buy or make a large Van Der Graff generator (not the prog rock kind) and release the nutrient naturally by having your own lightning party -wearing rubber boots for safety. Or you can add a soil improver which changes the soil structure to one that is more amenable to life. You can do this at any time from now until late October. Remember, adding organic matter to the soil can alter the pH so check it regularly to make sure you are not creating an acid bed fit only for extremophiles.

Charity golf day success
Farlington held its second Charity Golf Day on 15th May at Ifield Golf Club. The day was in aid of two very worthwhile charities: Cancer Research UK and the Farlington Foundation. The sun shone on the golfers as they enjoyed some very competitive golf! 68 golfers competed to raise money for the Farlington Foundation and Cancer Research UK. The main sponsors of the event were
the Black Isle Group and Crickmay Chartered Surveyors and we would like to say a big thank-you to all those who supported the event. The day was rounded off with drinks overlooking the course, followed by a delicious dinner. There were plenty of prizes presented by Sara Whittaker, a raffle and even a fabulous auction all of which contributed to the funds raised. The total is anticipated to be over £6000.

Sainsbury’s and Horsham Rotary Warning after children lottery raises over £1100 for charity hurt in aerosol explosion
The draw for the Horsham Rotary Club Lottery, held in conjunction with Sainsbury’s Horsham, took place on Sunday May 31 at Sainsbury’s. The lottery was run in aid of Horsham Community Responders and has raised £1116.00 for the local volunteer group. Horsham Community Responders have been Horsham Sainsbury’s charity of the year for the past year as well as being Horsham Rotary Club President Dave Smith’s charity of the year. The £1116.00 will be added to further by Sainsbury’s fundraising activities during the past year which once calculated will be a considerable
donation to Horsham Community Responders. There will also be further funds to come from Horsham Rotary Club’s President’s charity activities throughout the past twelve months. The winner of the first prize, a Sainsbury trolley dash, was Mr Andrew Macauley from Cowfold, the second prize of a 32 inch colour TV was won by Jill Horn of Slinfold, a bottle of champagne went to Cathy Barnes from Horsham and a giant bunny rabbit was won by Tamzin Hindle, also from Horsham. Responder Team Leader Marc Harrold said “I am delighted with the amount that has been raised by Sainsbury’s and Horsham Rotary and the
funds will be used to train and equip a new team member who will respond within the Horsham area”. The Horsham Community Responders scheme was set up in 2007 and they now have thirteen trained responders in the Horsham, Mannings Heath, and Warnham areas, with another three currently going through training. Responders are a trained and totally voluntary unpaid group that work closely with the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb). The team run and instigate their own funding through various fundraising ventures and monies such as that raised through this Lottery are vital to the schemes operation and growth. The aim of the group is to eventually provide a service 24 hours a day 365 days of the year. On duty responders are alerted of an incident by the ambulance control centre at the same time as they are dispatching an ambulance. The responders will often get to the scene before the ambulance where they will give vital lifesaving treatment and prevent the patient from getting any worse. Once the ambulance arrives they remain on site working with the ambulance crew until they are stood down. More information on Horsham Community Responders and how to help them can be found at www.horshamresponders.org
Two children were taken to hospital after an aerosol of hair spray exploded on a garden fire pit in front of them. The boy and girl had been playing around the embers of the fire pit in their garden in The Willows Storrington on Monday when the hairspray can overheated and exploded The 12-year-old boy suffered extensive burns to about 40 per cent of his body, while his 14 year old sister received superficial burns to her knees and hands. Both children were taken to Worthing Hospital for treatment. No further details of their injuries have been released.
WSFRS fire investigation Officer Mark Hayter said: “The children were using paper to try and relight the fire pit. They then did some fire play by placing a hair spray aerosol on the embers. The canister heated to a point that it exploded". "Playing with fire can be very dangerous. When you play with a cylinder with gas in it, on a fire, it can lead to explosive consequences, which can result to serious injuries or fire being spread to property" "A lot of young people experiment with fire, with some creating small flame-throwers using hairspray or deodorant cans. . There are severe consequences when it all goes wrong.”

Make a connection to fostering More power means better It’s Foster Care Fortnight, so if you’ve ever considered fostering, now is a great time to contact West Sussex County Council’s Fostering Recruitment Team. Foster Care Fortnight (1st to 14th June) is an annual event which recognises the significant commitment foster carers across the UK make in supporting vulnerable children who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to live at home. It also provides an ideal time to raise awareness of the need for more foster carers to come forward. The Fostering Network recently announced that in 2015 around 8,000 more foster carers are needed across the UK to meet the needs of children in care. In West Sussex, the County Council estimates that between 60 and 80 new foster carers must be found this year. There are different ways to foster, from offering short term or emergency support to offering a longer term home, or providing short breaks for children with disabilities. West Sussex County Council particularly needs people who could give a loving home to siblings or older children, and those with disabilities. For the children who have ben-
efited from being part of a foster family, it really can make a huge difference. Claire came into care following a particularly turbulent time at home and has now been with the
same foster family – who also have younger children of their own - for two years. She is aiming to start her A levels later this year and hopes to go on to university.
Claire credits her foster family with supporting her in all aspects of her life. “Everything’s changed. I’m a lot happier, I have grown in confidence and I am doing better in school.” This change is something that many foster carers cite as one of the most rewarding parts of their role. Graham and Sarah have been fostering for 10 years and during that time have helped 38 young people. Sarah says: “It is a privilege to be able to support children through a difficult time in their lives. I would encourage anyone thinking about fostering to take those first steps to find out more.” Foster carers come from all walks of life. The only thing they have in common is a spare room, patience and the ability to offer a stable and nurturing environment. If this sounds like you, West Sussex County Council would love to hear from you. You can call the Fostering Recruitment team for an informal chat on 0330 222 7775, visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/fostering or text FOSTER to 82228 to receive a call back.
services says council leader Residents of West Sussex would have better services if the Government gave the county council extra powers. That is the view of Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, which is calling on the government to give more powers to county authorities. Cllr Goldsmith said that devolving powers from Whitehall to county council level will enable a co-ordinated approach to delivering better services for local people, improving the economy and attracting more investment. The county council has commissioned research into the benefits that would follow for communities in the south east if county councils were given greater autonomy by the government. Speaking at County Hall in Chichester Cllr Goldsmith said: “This work highlights the very strong economy in the South East but that economic success comes at a price which county councils deal with day in day out. “We are acutely aware that we need to nurture our vibrant economy which continues to be the economic powerhouse for the South East.” The work highlights that seven councils alone in the south east produced more than £133 billion in GVA in 2012 – making them the
third largest contributor to the UK’s economy – and they have more active enterprises than Scotland and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority together. Cllr Goldsmith will now look to work with other councils across the south east to take forward the work and prepare the case for greater devolved powers to be given to county authorities.
The County Council has commissioned research into the benefits that would follow for communities in the South-East She said: “There is considerable work to do to prepare a case, particularly around infrastructure, social care, our work on the troubled families agenda and skills. “To me, this work is about building a case to put to the government about how devolution could help resolve some of those really key issues around infrastructure and adult social care.”

chocolate mango and biscuit cake (both available in our Piries place shop for a limited time). As well as having a great knees up we also wanted to show people how chocolate can not only be scrumptious, but ethical too, we are proud that all our chocolate is Fairtrade certified and organic. Commenting on the event Cocoa Loco founder Sarah Payne said: "What a stupendous party! We had
such an amazing afternoon with huge amounts of fun and so many customers and friends congratulating us on our success. “We even had an amazing 'Willy Wonka' style birthday cake made for us by local cake maker Sharon Walker, which was devoured with gusto by all who came, but only after local celebrity John O'Sullivan led us all in singing Happy Birthday. We worked so hard to make the party a big suc-
cess and feel the effort really paid off. However we were all austed and when asked when the next celebration would be, we politely declined to comment! Staff then went on to celebrate with an 'after party' at Bills in Horsham. Huge thanks are due to all the people which made this event possible, especially to the council for allowing us to use the band stand as our venue.

South East Hearing Care Centres Proud Rudridge supplier celebrates landmark accreditation completes race for charity
For Horsham based audiologists South East Hearing Care Centres, 2015 is proving to be an incredible year with a prestigious accreditation from Unitron, the global specialists in hearing instruments. Upon completing the Unitron master fit course, South East Hearing Care Centres is one of just a few audiologists UK wide to be granted this highly sought after accredita-
tion. As a result they are now offering local people the opportunity to try “Flex”, a brand new hearing solution from Unitron. Rob Davies, Managing Director said, “ As a local, independent team of qualified audiologists we have been helping people in the surrounding areas for many years and have extensive experience in improving their lives and often signifi-
cantly through better hearing. With this accreditation we can now offer a pioneering hearing solution that’s without equal”. Flex has a simple three-step approach. It removes the upfront cost and uncertainly people feel around purchasing hearing aids. That’s because the hearing aids are fitted during the individual’s first visit with no initial cost or obligation. They can then wear the hearing aids in their dayto-day life – at work, home and play. At the end of the trial period they can choose to keep the hearing aids or to return them and walk away owing nothing. Philip Stores, Director of Unitron UK & Ireland said, “For a customer to benefit from the highest standard of care, their audiologist should embrace the very latest technology training. In completing this course and being accredited, the audiologists at South East Hearing Care Centres are making a real commitment to providing a first class consultation and rehabilitation service to their customers. Undoubtedly their customers will receive the best advice and aftercare when choosing their hearing aids.” For more information either telephone South East Hearing Care Centres on 01403 218863 or call in to see us at 20-22 Bishopric, Horsham.
Civil engineering groundwork material specialist, Rudridge, with branches in Brentford, Gravesend, Horsham and Farnham, is proud to announce that one of their suppliers valiantly took on and completed the recent Monster Race in Oxfordshire. Andy Zeglovskis from Rudridge supplier, Hanson Cement, took part in this challenge along with friends, forming team ‘Nuff Said’ and collectively raised over £1,000, of muchneeded funds, for the Chestnut Tree House Hospice. Rudridge was only too happy to provide sponsorship for Andy to run this challenge. This tough event included over 25 obstacles, such as the ‘Bog of Eternal Stench’, ‘Barbed Wire Crawl’ and ‘Monsters Marsh’, as well as the standard giant climbing walls and
freezing streams to run through. Andy said: “The Monster Race was a lot harder than I thought it would be, and trust me, I was expecting it to be tough. However, the team pulled together and made a valiant effort to complete it. We’re all really pleased that we raised a good amount for the hospice and would like to say thank you to Rudridge and all of our other sponsors.” Darren Price, Rudridge Business Development Manager, added: dp“When we heard about Andy taking on the Monster Race challenge we thought he was brave – and bonkers and were more than happy to sponsor him. We’d like to say a big ‘well done’ to him and his team for completing the race and raising such an honourable figure for the charity.”

The new Bye Bye Baby Show – a fresh take on the story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons; comes to The Hawth Crawley on Wednesday July 1 and is set to take the town by storm. Musical Director Mark Ryzer says: “The Bye Bye Baby Show is above all about the timeless music of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons which is still relevant today. We have worked extremely hard on every single element of our performance and in particular, in producing high quality melodies. I can guarantee that whether you are 8 or 80, you will not stay sat down during our show!” Bye Bye Baby takes audiences through the journey of the Four Seasons with all its highs and lows; right from how the group formed; to how they were admitted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The show features a huge set list
including classics such as Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like a Man and Will You Still Love me Tomorrow. The Bye Bye Baby Show also has a unique twist in that this show will also feature big numbers which have never previously appeared in the original Jersey Boys musical including Silence is Golden, The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore and Why Do Fools Fall in Love. Bye Bye Baby features the New Jersey Boy Jukebox; a seven piece live band. Mark Ryzer adds: “Our singers are of an incredible vocal range and quality. Take our lead singer Jamie Ledwith. Remember not to forget your Table Manners at The Capitol Theatre Talking Scarlet is proud to present Table Manners by Alan Ayckbourn at The Capitol in Horsham. Part of the trilogy The Norman Conquests, Alan Ayckbourn's hilarious play depicts the interplay between six characters over a weekend in the dining room, as assistant librarian, Norman, tries to bring happiness to the lives of the three women present at the house with varying results. Sarah and Reg (Annie's older brother) arrive to give Annie the chance to escape for the weekend for a long-needed rest. Fireworks begin almost immediately when Annie tells Sarah she is going away with her sister's husband, Norman. That
pretty much sets the tone for the evening: an extended family whose members simultaneously despise each other and can't get enough of each other. Central to these relationships is Norman, who needs desperately to be needed--by anyone. It's almost hard to blame him, too, once you meet his wife, Ruth, a career-obsessed woman with little apparent need for Norman. And then there is Tom, the veterinarian neighbour whom everyone assumes is courting Annie (including, to some degree, Tom and Annie, even though the two haven't ever declared it or acted on it). An all-star cast including Sabina
Franklyn (Full House, Coronation Street), Marcus Hutton (Brookside) and David Callister (The Bill Of All and many, many more. “I can’t remember when I last sat in a theatre and laughed out loud, neither can I remember cheers coming at the curtain call at Devonshire Park for some time but they were richly deserved. Not only has Patric Kearns directed this with great pace, he has also designed a lovely set and chosen a superb cast.” Sussex Express Table Manners runs from Monday 29th June to Wednesday 1st July, with performances at 7.30pm on Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th and 2.30 pm and 7.30pm on Wednesday 1st July.

Slow food in Horsham
For the past two years, Crates Local Produce has been flying the flag for local producers, makers and bakers from their convenient Town Centre shop in the historic Carfax, Horsham. Bursting with locally produced fruit and vegetables, freshly baked bread, dairy, groceries, cheese and
even local beers, wines and spirits, this modest shop with it’s own cafe-deli has built up a large following of discerning customers looking for fresh and better tasting food. Now they have added a new member to their team and one who should prove quite a head turner - a vintage electric milk float.

Milk floats are the original eco vehicle and Britain manufactured thousands of these electric workhorses since the 1930’s but in recent years they have almost all been replaced by diesel powered vans. Built in 1966, Flo (the slow) is an original Morrison D6 electric milk float that worked tirelessly until she fell into disrepair many years ago. Now lovingly restored by Len Stevenson from Southwater, the float is entering service again for Crates Local to feature at many local events and markets but also as a mobile shop. The first round for Flo will be in the Heron Way area every Tuesday from 6.30pm making it convenient for busy working families. Customers can find out the exact stopping points and timings through the Crates Local website and social media platforms to then simply come out to buy from the mobile shop. Crates Local co-founder, Marion Carter, explains “Flo is already getting a lot of attention since arriving this week and bringing back many childhood memories for people. We do apologise in advance, however, to any driver who may get stuck behind us as both the float and our produce is most definitely slow!” For more details of Flo and Crates Local, visitwww.crateslocal.co.uk.

Local bartenders stirring up a storm Chef holds pasta lesson
It’s been six months of shaking, stirring and straining, but the hard work has paid off for Horsham bartending team The Dead Parrot as they are set to participate in the final of Monkey Shoulder’s Ultimate Bartender Championship taking place at The Yard in Shoreditch, London on 4th June. Hundreds of bartending teams from across the UK applied in the hope of winning every bartender’s dream – the chance to run their own pop-up bar at London Cocktail Week. Promoted and stocked by Monkey Shoulder, the winning team will also get to keep all the takings made during the week which totalled over £12,000 for the 2014 winners. With over 30 years bar experience between them, the team comprises Andrew Harrod, Dave White and Adam Manning from Dead Parrot
based in Horsham, who have all been put through their bartending paces at each stage of the competition. They beat strong competition in round one as they demonstrated their bartending expertise, from creating cocktails with speed and accuracy to stock taking and problem solving. Team member Dave took this one step further and created his cocktail in just one minute and 26 seconds – the fastest out of any entrants in the competition! The next stop for The Dead Parrot was the semi-finals in London, where Andrew, Dave and Adam had to create a cocktail like no other to impress industry experts. If the pressure wasn’t enough, the team also had to present the concept for their bar in an apprentice style boardroom challenge. Luckily the lads kept their cool and sailed through to the finals.
Team member Adam Manning said “We are delighted to have made it to the finals! We understand that everyone wants to have fun when they go out so we consider that first and foremost. We don’t want to give too much away, but for the final, the circus is coming to town. Guests will have the chance to interact and immerse themselves in the full circus experience, from wearable garnishes to winning their drinks – this is set to be a bar with a difference.” The Dead Parrot will battle it out against Bristol team Stirred Down and Brown and 21st Re-amendment from Newcastle in the final, which will see the three teams go head-tohead in a cocktail extravaganza, pulling out all the stops to impress the crowd and give them a taste of what’s to come for London Cocktail Week in October. On the night, each guest will be given four drinks tokens to redeem against four cocktails – one from each bar and one to vote for the experience they enjoy the most. All they have to do is drink, enjoy and then choose their favourite. It’s simple – the bar with the most tokens wins and gets to bask in all its whisky-soaked glory. Grant Neave, Monkey Shoulder’s UK brand ambassador said “The UKwide competition is set to culminate in a showdown of all showdowns and I can’t wait to see what each team has in store.” Tickets are available from EventBrite. Tickets cost £10 each and include four drinks tokens.
People at a day centre got a cooking lesson from Horsham’s own MasterChef Steven Edwards. Millions of people watched Steven cook his way to victory in MasterChef: The Professionals in 2013. This time Steve, 29, was in a new kitchen at the Strawford Day Centre in Horsham giving customers a master class in pasta-making. The Strawford Centre is a day centre for adults with learning disabilities. Steven, who lives in Horsham, shared his expert tips with the centre’s customers before sitting down and enjoying a pasta lunch with them. Steven said: “I had great fun meeting all the day centre cus-
tomers and making pasta with them. They were all really enthusiastic. Thank you for welcoming me along.” Peter Catchpole, West Sussex County Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “What a great opportunity for customers at the Strawford Day Centre to learn cookery tips and take part in a master class with a top chef. “The customers all had great fun making the pasta. Thank you to Steven for giving up his time to hold the class – I’m sure all the customers join me in saying he’d be welcome back any time!” Since winning MasterChef Steven has set up his own consultancy company called ‘etch’.

New Horsham development a runaway success
New apartments built with exceptional style and quality, but without costing the earth, are rare enough these days. To find them within easy reach of Horsham town centre is virtually unheard-of. So today’s announcement from leading local estate agents Cubitt & West that almost
two thirds of the apartments in the new Horsham Gates development are either already sold or reserved – before they are even finished! – should come as no surprise. Situated just a four-minute walk from the town centre and railway station (London Victoria in 54 minutes), Horsham Gates comprises a
total of 85 one and two-bedroom apartments, over 60% of which are already reserved or sold. And it’s not hard to see why. With prices ranging from just £190,000 to £365,000, and featuring stylish contemporary open-plan living areas, Horsham Gates represents the very pinnacle of affordable 21st
century luxury. All the apartments are finished to the same ultra high specification, with superb fitted kitchens and designer bath and shower rooms – plus eco-friendly LED lighting, high-security locks and entry phone systems. Significantly, all apartments also have parking, while some also have private balconies. “There is a significant shortage of stylishly-designed, well-priced new homes in the Horsham area, and currently nothing else of comparable quality is being brought to the market,” says Jason Willetts, Head of Cubitt & West’s Land and New Homes Division. “Small wonder then that Horsham Gates is proving such a runaway success with everyone from first time buyers and investors to downsizers!” So, if you’re looking for a high quality and attractively priced new home in a great location, best get down to Cubitt & West in Horsham right now - or ring them on 01403 269268 - and register your interest. But don’t delay, because as the rate these apartments are simply flying off the shelves, you don’t want to miss out!

Lines & James unite for SAFEagent Awareness Week 2015
Lines & James are proud to be a part of SAFEagent Awareness Week 2015 (June 1st – June 5th) which will see over 3,000 professional lettings agents unite across the UK for what will be the 4th annual initiative. The act looks to drive awareness amongst consumers of the importance of choosing a lettings and management agent who is part of a Client Money Protection (CMP) Scheme. The timing is auspicious because, from 27 May 2015, all lettings and management firms will be required to display their fees and charges to landlords and tenants as well as displaying whether or not they are part of a CMP Scheme. Agents, consumer bodies (Citizens Advice Bureaux, The Property Ombudsman, Ombudsman Services:Property, My Deposits, TDS and DPS) and the wider property community traditionally support this campaign, both on and off-line. The Government has also given its support to SAFEagent Awareness Week since its launch in 2011. Tenant and landlord financial protection remains in the media spotlight in
2015 in the wake of a few high profile instances of where lettings agents misused funds. However, despite this, SAFEagent feels that the message is still not getting through that consumers’ finances are at risk if their chosen agent does not subscribe to a CMP scheme. “There are still too many people who are not aware of the potential pitfalls of choosing an agent who doesn’t have CMP”, says John Midgley, Chair of the SAFEagent Steering Group. Midgely maintains that whilst awareness of the SAFEagent mark is increasing, consumers are not always aware of the fact that if an agent were to abscond with a landlord or tenant’s money without CMP in place - there would be little chance of retrieving those funds. And, as a result – consumers are still not always asking the right questions at the onset. He says: “Whilst the last few years have seen the Government move to tighten regulations around letting agents, it is also important that tenants and landlords understand that the right to redress only goes so far, and they need to choose wisely by asking a few simple questions. It can make all the difference”. “As it stands we welcome the requirement for all agents to display whether or not they are part of a CMP scheme but we want to see inclusion in such a scheme a mandatory requirement for all agents.” Tenants and landlords / consumers are encouraged to go on-line and check out www.safeagents.co.uk to find an agent in their area and the advice is to always look for the SAFEagent mark, an easily identifiable consumer mark denoting agents subscribed to a Client Money Protection (CMP) Scheme.
Leaders raises £22,000 for during Children’s Hospice Week Staff at Leaders estate agents took part in a variety of fundraising events – including baking, dressing up, longdistance cycling, rowing and walking, and even sponsored head shaving - in support of Children’s Hospice Week, which took place from 11-17th May. Their efforts raised £22,000 nationally for their Charity of the Year partnership with Together for Short Lives, the UK’s leading charity for children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions. Together for Short Lives helps to ensure that every child and young person unlikely to reach adulthood, and their family, get the best possible care and support whenever and wherever they need it by raising money for the 53 children’s hospice services across the UK. Each Leaders branch has been partnered with its nearest children’s hospice so staff can support seriously ill children and their families locally. Paul Weller, Leaders’ managing director, said: “We are delighted to have raised such an excellent sum of money during Children’s Hospice Week and some of our branches still have events and sponsored challenges taking place later this month. “We want to raise as much as we can for this wonderful cause during 2015 and we’re very grateful to our customers, business associates and the general public who have so generously supported us so far. “Working with Together for Short Lives as our charity partner means we can make a real difference to seriously ill children and their families. Local children’s hospice services are supported by
Together for Short Lives so the money raised by each of our branches directly benefits their local community.” Nick Appleby, Corporate Fundraising Manager at Together for Short Lives said: “We are delighted with the enthusiasm
Together for Short Lives helps to ensure that every child and young person unlikely to reach adulthood, and their family, get the best possible care and support whenever and wherever they need it by raising money for the 53 children’s hospice services across the UK that Leaders have shown to the charity. Their support will help us raise muchneeded funds for thousands of seriously ill children and their families who rely on the vital care provided by local children’s hospices across the country." Josh Dance pulls a masterstroke Golf Martin Read – Sports Reporter Twelve year old Josh Dance from Roffey has pulled off a major coup by winning the Sussex Junior Open Golf Tournament at Albourne’s spectacular Singing Hills lake course with its backdrop of the Sussex Downs. The age limits for the competition were 11 to 17 years and Josh romped home with 42 points, holing the last nine in level par. A very happy Josh saw off a field of 18, telling the District Post: “I’ve been in quite a few competitions before but this was my first big individual win and it was great to do it on such a scenic course.” Proud dad, Darren – former Roffey and Horsham cricketer - said: “Josh has been promising something like this for some time and it’s fantastic that he’s now done himself justice. I’ve been taking him around to tournaments and I missed this one, but his mother, Jo, was delighted to be there! It was the first time that Singing Hills had put on the junior competition and they won praises for running it so well.” All round sportsman Josh also plays football and cricket for Roffey
Sussex Junior Open Golf champion Josh Dance but says: “Golf is my favourite – I started when I was 5 years old and enjoy playing with Dad at Cottesmore.” Meanwhile, Dad quipped: “Yes we do still play golf together but Josh is catching me up now - it won't be long before he is beating
me regularly! Seriously, it’s marvellous to see his progress.” Tomorrow (Saturday June 6) Josh has been selected to play for Sussex U14s against a combined team from Hertfordshire and Hampshire at Whipsnade.

Schools gather to enjoy Hawks score a century but fall in final Farlington sports festival Horsham Hawks U12 100 – 108 Worthing D&D U12 Youth Basketball Dave Smith – Sports Editor
Farlington hosted their annual Sports Festival School Sports Dave Smith - Sports Editor Farlington hosted their annual Sports Festival for Year 5 girls on Wednesday May 13. The sun shone and the pupils from Park Mead Primary, Loxwood Primary, Cranleigh Church of England Primary, Greenway Academy and Farlington had great fun trying out, what proved to be for some, new activities. The afternoon was run by the Year 10 Sports Leaders group. This course gives the opportunity for pupils to develop a range of leadership skills which will be useful both in a sporting environment and in life in general. The Farlington Sports Leaders displayed excellent organi-
sational, communication and leadership skills ensuring that all those involved had a fun-filled and safe afternoon of sport. The event started with an endurance race of 600m. A wide range of activities followed with the girls moving from station to station trying their hand at a wide range of skills including hurdles, striking a rounders ball, scoring goals in hockey and netball, and jumping. All of the teams were competing for gold in each activity. In what was a great afternoon of sporting activities all those organising the event were impressed with the talent and enthusiasm of the participating students, many of whom were trying some of the sports for the first time.
With one win apiece the U12 Sussex Cup Final between Horsham and Worthing would be their third meeting this season bringing together the first and second placed teams from the Sussex League and featuring eleven South East England Players. Horsham started quickly taking a 14-6 advantage behind accurate finishing from Josh Lea-Clayton (41 points) and Josh Tavolieri (18 points) before Worthing fought back to lead at the end of the first quarter 25-22. A blistering 65 point second quarter was a masterclass in attacking basketball as both teams scored heavily featuring eight lead changes and Horsham outscoring Worthing 33-32 leaving the Hawks just two points adrift going into the half time interval. Fearless attacking basketball and accurate finishing continued in the third quarter as Horsham continued to close the gap to 85-86 with Fin Bennett (18 points) and Miguel Venturini (14 points) adding to their totals. With just ten minutes remaining in the game a packed crowd at the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy settled down for the
Hawks and Supporters after the final game final instalment of a mesmerising contest. Mid way through the fourth quarter back to back baskets from Charlotte Willcox kept the Worthing lead to a single point at 94-93 before an explosive 14-0 D&D run in just three minutes threatened to kill the game off. An inspired Horsham team however, refused to quit and responded with a 7-0 run of their own in the final two minutes including a three pointer from Antonio Lozzi before time ran out on the Hawks and saw Worthing secure the County Cup 108-100. This game brings to an end an amazing season for Horsham that has seen the Hawks win 16 of 19
games whilst racking up a massive 1464 points. Head Coach David Clayton said “This has been fantastic year for the Hawks U12 squad who continue to grow and develop as individuals and as a team. The players have been an absolute pleasure to coach and with their work ethic, commitment and passion for basketball I have no doubt it will not be long before they reach another final and go a step further.” Scorers: Josh Lea-Clayton - 41, Josh Tavolieri – 18, Fin Bennett 18, Miguel Venturini - 14, Charlotte Willcox – 4, Antonio Lozzi - 3, Harry Rose – 2, Meghan Stevens, Amy Willcox, Anaya Wakefield, Jamie Coulson, James Lowe.

Welsh International Jamie Whitehouse (red) & Seye Akande (white)
Sunday May 31 - Annual President’s Day Match Horsham 7 - 3 President’s Invitation XI Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter President Hugh Thomas put out a strong Invitation XI against Horsham men’s 1st team at Broadbridge Heath, but despite conceding an early goal to Welsh international Jamie Whitehouse – a former Horsham colt – Horsham won at a canter. Duncan Howarth responded, celebrating his recent reappointment as men’s captain and former skip-
per John Burroughs also found the net. Peter Neave, enjoying his final game for Horsham before leaving for university in Scotland, and Freddie Campbell were also on target. And, prolific scorer Jack Dean crowned an excellent performance by Horsham’s forwards with an outstanding hat trick. Hugh Thomas told the District Post: “The weather relented and a good turnout of spectators were treated to some great hockey from leading league players from Havant, Guildford and East Grinstead, but Horsham beat my Invitation XI and it was very pleasing to be able to present Jack Dean with the Man of the Match award post
match back at the club.” Duncan Howarth added: “The annual President’s Day match is always a big occasion for the club, giving us the opportunity to showcase both our senior players and some of our fine emerging talent. It was particularly noteworthy to see three Chinn brothers on the field – Noah, Zac and 14 year old Joel.” Team Manager Al Campbell said: “Horsham Hockey Club have got a big challenge this weekend in the National Finals at London’s Olympic Park when the mixed team take on Bedford in the semi final tomorrow (Saturday June 6). We’re hoping to go through to Sunday’s final!”
Dominant weekend performance from Will Palmer at Silverstone
Southwater's Will Palmer leads the F4 championship Motor Sport Dave Smith – Sports Editor Will Palmer took two commanding wins on the Grand Prix Circuit at Silverstone last weekend, May 30 and 31, as he moved into first place in the Duo BRDC Formula 4 Championship standings. The 18-year-old added a fourth place finish in race two to take 88 points across the meeting and now leads Mexican driver Rodrigo Fonseca by 12 points after the first nine races of the season. After securing pole position in the wet on Friday, Palmer took up his position at the head of the field on Saturday for the first race of the
weekend, making a clean getaway into the first corner. Scottish racer Ciaran Haggerty moved into second, having started fourth, but Will got his head down and began extending his advantage, setting a new BRDC F4 lap record with a time of 2m 04.517s. He completed the first nine laps untroubled and on the last lap Will had a gap of 5.056s over Haggerty, eventually crossing the line 5.800s clear of the Scot with Jordan Albert third. Will lined up in eighth for the start of the second race on Sunday morning. The circuit was damp following overnight rain and Palmer used his wet weather experience to quickly move into third. As the condition of
his tyres deteriorated in the closing stages, Will was overtaken by Tom Jackson which relegated him to fourth, a position he would hold until the end of the race. Due to his fastest lap across the first two races, set in dry conditions in the opening race, Will was on pole position for the final encounter of the weekend, making a strong start to comfortably lead into Copse ahead of Jordan Albert and Ciaran Haggerty. After the first lap Will had opened up a clear advantage and was over five seconds clear by the midpoint of the race. Will continued to extend his advantage, setting a number of fastest laps, and he finished 8.292s clear of Newey with Rodrigo Fonseca taking the final podium spot in third. Will leads the championship standings on 193 points, 12 points ahead of Lanan Racing's Rodrigo Fonseca and 31 points clear of Manx driver Chris Mealin in third. The Formula 4 Championship standings after race nine of 24 are; 1. Will Palmer, HHC Motorsport, 193 points 2. Rodrigo Fonseca, Lanan Racing, 181 points 3. Chris Mealin, Lanan Racing, 162 points 4. Tom Jackson, Chris Dittmann Racing, 152 points 5. Jordan Albert, Sean Walkinshaw Racing, 143 points

Pulborough host the Presidents and Executives match Bowls Jane Gray – Pulborough BC On Tuesday May 26, Pulborough played host to the competitive Presidents versus Executives County Match, over 6 rinks. 5 Pulborough players took part, across all rinks, with the Presidents taking winning honours on all but 1 rink. The winning Executives team were made up of President Ken Woodcote, Terry Mitchell, Reg Strong and Pulborough's Chris Etherington. After a cancellation at Horsham Park, Pulborough BC next played away at Fishbourne on Saturday May 30. 3 triples played 18 ends against tough opposition and skip, Len Adsett, chose his game to redeem himself after a tough run of late. His team of Melvin Green and Joyce Woods took top rink, after leading from end 2, to finish 39/6 ahead. Skip Jan Barnes, with number 1 Pauline Adsett and number 2
Arthur Varndell, had a tough game after being behind by up to 10 shots in the first half, but a six on end 9, followed by a 4 the following end, pulled them in front 18/16, and never looked back, finishing 24/21. Not to be outdone, Joyce Broadribb, Steve Adsett and Colin Andrews also finished ahead 18/14, giving Pulborough overall victory on all 3 rinks, 81/41. County successes were plentiful for Pulborough players this week with John Brown winning 22/11 in his County Singles against T. High, Chris Etherington/John Brown winning their pairs away at the Witterings and Ivan Salmon/Matt Ives winning their pairs at home after playing an extra end. Pulborough next play in the WSBL at home to Middleton on Wednesday 3, a club event on Saturday 6 and an away game on Sunday 7 at Bognor in the West Sussex Bowls League, spectators and new members are always welcome.

Maximum league points for Storrington Billingshurst emulate Bowls John Wharmby – Storrington BC Storrington Bowling Club’s second league match of the season was away against Petworth, on Saturday, May 30. Fine, sunny weather, a playable green and a weakened Petworth team meant that Storrington did not have to “pull out many stops”. Harry Kendal’s team set the
theme with a slow start (7 - 4 after 7 ends) but then pulled away to finish 28 shots ahead. Howard White’s team demonstrated a similar ease of play, ending with a win of 10 shots, but Paul Leatherbarrow’s team produced a few awkward moments, “only” winning by 6 shots. Petworth’s team facing that of Peter Newman was the only one to produce a little apprehension, drawing 16 – 16 two ends from the
finish. However Peter perfected a winning shot on both ends to give a match win by 46 shots and the full 10 league points. N Tewsley, A Head,J Rimmer & H Kendall won 37-9 G Page, G Newman, I Younger & H White won 21-11 B Manning, R Naldrett, P Brooker & P Leatherbarrow won 24-18 D Barber, B Bona, P Smith & P Newman won 18-16.

Roffey win after strong performance Saturday May 30 - Sussex Premier League Roffey v East Grinstead East Grinstead 200-9 declared (57 overs) Roffey 203-6 (51.4 overs) Roffey won by 4 wickets Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter Reigning champions Roffey overcame a strong visiting East Grinstead side, earning 28 points placing them third, five behind Preston Nomads and ten behind leaders Brighton & Hove (who have played one more game). After being inserting East Grin-
stead reached 89-1 with consistent 19 year old Fynn Hudson-Prentice going well on 67, but a flurry of wickets saw them slump to 109-5, slowing the momentum considerably. Roffey bowlers shared the spoils, Ben Manenti leading the way with 3-55 from 20 overs and Rohit Jagota taking 2-25. Four lower order batsmen reached double figures carrying the total to a respectable but not too daunting 200. In reply Roffey soon found themselves in trouble on 20-2 but the depth of their batting took them home with eight balls to spare, Rohit scoring 56 with 6 fours and 2 sixes and Josh Fleming and Dan
Smith notching up thirties, useful contributions also coming from Chris Webb, Ben Manenti and wicket keeper Matt Davies. Josh Fleming said: “They’re a good young side, the best we’ve played against so far this season, and they got off to a good start but we restrained them well. It was a great team effort producing a good win for us!” Tomorrow (Saturday June 6) Roffey visit mid table Eastbourne, comprehensively beaten by Preston Nomads last week. In an enthrallingly tense lowscoring game at Jubilee Fields both sides created promising platforms only to collapse spectacularly, Billingshurst holding their nerve to strangle victory with a tight bowling and fielding performance. After Billingshurst won the toss openers Stuart Barber (40) and evergreen Scott Stratton (30) raised hopes of a challenging total until, following their dismissals on the spin friendly wicket, 82-1 subsided to 117-6. Michael Munday’s mystery wiles earned him 4-40, featuring an excellent second attempt catch by John Burroughs, during 27 tormenting overs in tandem with Ben Shoare (4-30). A suicidal run out brought the innings to a close at 142, around 50 short of earlier expectations. Horsham were happiest at tea, but their fragile batting returned to haunt them. An early wicket fell, Ben Shoare penalised for flashing wildly, amid playing and missing during a lively opening spell from Andy Barr. But at 46-1 there was nothing to suggest that with 68 overs available to overhaul a modest total Horsham would succumb so readily. With Craig Gallagher at the helm, top scoring with 41 – including an upper cut six behind square – a Horsham win beckoned. However, four catches from Ben Williams – including two smart ones off his own bowling – led the tigerish Billingshurst fielding display as Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi (6-47) system-
atically worked his way through the upper order before attending to the tail. Among 10 Hurst maidens, injudicious forays down the wicket proved fatal, and although Nathan Roberts was unbeaten on 20 from 67 balls, team mates came and went with alarming regularity. Despite an obdurate last wicket partnership, Jonathan Whiting batting with a runner after injuring himself while completing an earlier catch, there was to be no recovery from 116-9. Sussex’s Chris Liddle eventually claimed the number 11 before Chief destroyer Danushka said: “It turns here, especially in the second innings, so I thought we could defend 142 if we bowled as well as we have been. We’ve got ten home games and if we can post 200 then we should do well here.” Andy Barr added: “We really wanted to win this and buzzed around creating pressure. Getting an early wicket set the tone!” Ecstatic captain Ben Williams told us: “We let ourselves down with the bat but we gave it everything in the field. Horsham were 91-3 so there was definitely something in it for the batsmen. We’ve got a proper team spirit going and it’s great to have Chris Liddle here – he’s fitted in so well helping with the younger players.” The jubilation of Hurst’s players and supporters contrasted the much more circumspect Horsham camp, skipper Sam Attfield saying: “We bowled well and their total was gettable but our batting was very poor – it’s been brittle for a while and we need to have a serious look at ourselves.” Tomorrow (Saturday June 6) Horsham in need of a win host struggling newcomers Middleton while Billingshurst visit league leaders Brighton & Hove.
