Boy tackles mountain for charity Phil dennett

News Editor

A boy of 10 tackled Britain’s highest mountain to thank charity workers who helped him combat a potentially fatal illness. Determined Ed Gordon-Thomson headed for the peak of Ben Nevis with dad Andrew and mum Gen in the Grampian Mountains of Scotland to raise money for research into why some patients with a blood disease suffer relapses. Ed, from Warnham, was two years old when he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Because of his treatment and illness he missed a lot of early schooling but has worked hard to catch up. Last year decided he would climb the mountain this summer to help awareness of his condition and help the Children with Cancer UK charity. By the time he reached the snowcapped slopes a team of 65 people including charity patron Linda Robson and “Walking with Dinosaurs” star Nigel Marven had joined the trail to raise at least £44, 161. Ed defiantly fought off fatigue at one stage during the climb but would not ease up. His proud dad said: “It

was a real reflection of his character... “He came to us when he was about two thirds of the way up and said to me ‘Dad, I am really tired’. “But in a testament to his determination not to let anything hold him back in life he said ‘I’m not saying I’m going to stop, I’m just saying I’m tired.’ He coped with it incredibly well.” Ed now has some unfinished business with the mountain, because freakishly severe weather sent everyone off the mountain when the party was only a tantalising 150 metres, about 40 minutes climb, from the 4,409 ft summit. Deep snow, ice and poor visibility made the paths ahead too treacherous for inexperienced climbers. Ed told the Post: “I found it very hard climbing the mountain. My legs hurt but I really wanted to get to the top. Hopefully I will get another chance soon. I would like to thank all of the people that joined us and everyone who has donated to the charity. I just can't believe how much we have raised." Mr Gordon-Thomson said: “It was disappointing for Ed. But he told us on the day that we need to go back and finish. I think it’s personal business for him. He did fantastically well, but he wants to get to the top.” continued on page 2

Charities will get a triple boost when two new stores open their doors next week. Staff at John Lewis “at Home” and the adjoining Waitrose are preparing to greet first customers on Thursday at 9am. On the same day John Lewis ‘At Home’ will launch its Community Matters scheme, providing £3,000 a month to be shared between three local charities every three months. The first charities to benefit are Age UK Horsham District, the Springboard Project and Horsham Matters. The scheme allows customers to decide which charity they would like to support by voting at the shop with a token handed out to customers for each purchase. Age UK Horsham District is an independent local charity, providing activities and services that promote, influence and improve wellbeing and quality of later life in Horsham district. The Springboard Project provides inclusive play and leisure for families with young children and short breaks for children and teenagers with disabilities. Horsham Matters is a social enterprise set up by Horsham Churches Together to provide projects giving practical support local people in need.

The charities will be supported for three months, after which time another three will be selected. Details on how charities and organisations can nominate themselves for the next period of support will be available in the branch. Nigel Davis, branch manager at John Lewis ‘At Home’ Horsham, said: “We are committed to being a force for good in Horsham, and my team at are very pleased to be supporting these three great causes. “Each makes a fantastic contribution to the wellbeing and vibrancy within our region. “These initiatives are all so important; from helping to deliver support to those in need, to improving the quality of life for the elderly and supporting leisure for children and teenagers with disabilities.” John Lewis ‘At Home’ Horsham will be open Monday to Saturday 9am8pm, and Sunday from 10am-4.30pm, including Sunday browse time 1010.30am. Waitrose Horsham will be open Monday to Saturday 7.30am9pm, and Sunday 10.30am-4.30pm. The café will be open Monday to Saturday 7.30am- 8pm and Sunday 10am – 4pm. The stores are expected to create about 200 jobs and cost about £11million to build.

The pathway was just snow and ice, you just could not stand up. But the trip was all about raising awareness and of course raising money for the charity. We never expected to raise as much as we have. The target was about £20,000.” Anyone wishing to contribute to the fund-raising may visit the website uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ fund/ClimbwithEd or google ‘Climb With Ed’.

Mrs Gordon-Thomson had climbed Ben Nevis when she was about eight with her parents, but this was Ed’s first try. He enjoys a lot of sport, including football, rugby, cricket, judo and fencing. Mr Gordon-Thomson said: “It was frustrating not to reach the summit, but were still higher than any other mountain in the British Isles.

On Saturday 20th June, the communities of Barns Green and Itchingfield will be celebrating a significant milestone, but also the end of an era. Present in the village for over 160 years, Itchingfield Primary School has educated over 3,500 pupils, seen eight head teachers and holds many fond memories for pupils both past and present. Nestling on top of Fulfords Hill in idyllic Sussex countryside, this Victorian school was, according to a previous headteacher, “a perfect location in which to educate young children in an increasingly hectic world”. The last remaining split site school in West Sussex is now being replaced with a new purpose built, single site facility. Award winning property developer, Berkeley Homes, has recently finished building the brand new school premises to provide bright and airy classrooms and play spaces, offering a new, inspirational and stimulating environment for the children of these villages and beyond. With the primary school holding such iconic status in the local community for so many years, the school

is keen to mark this momentous occasion by hosting a closing ceremony. People with any association with the school are invited to take part in the event at 2pm on Saturday 20th June along with pupils and head teachers both past and present. Visitors are being encouraged to bring with them their favourite memories. In order to capture all the heartfelt sentiments and history of the old school, the Parent Teacher Association is creating a memory book and is keen for everyone involved to contribute to the school’s vibrant past. The closing event will also be marked with the filling and sealing of a Time Capsule containing contributions from today’s pupils. Items to be included are a video of the children entering the new school building for the first time, a tile and brick from the old building, a current school jumper, a copy of The History of Itchingfield School book and selections of current school work. Anyone wishing to attend should contact Barns Green Primary School on 01403 730614 or email; office@ barnsgreen.org.uk.

Police seek men after shop attack Gardeners’ back ache? Police want to interview two men caught on a security camera about an assault on a Horsham shop worker. The man was injured as he struggled with two men trying to steal a crate of beer from a Horsham off licence. The men entered The Bottle Shop in Crawley Road just after 8pm on May 22 and when challenged punched the 33-year-old victim and hit him on the head. They then ran from the shop and down Littlehaven Road. PC Martin Upton, of Sussex Police, said: "We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident or who has any information about the suspects. The men, pictured in a CCTV image, are both described as white, in their mid-20s, skinny and with short hair. Anyone able to help is asked to email 101@sussex.pnn.police. uk or call 101 quoting serial 1514 of 22/05. Alternatively, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111." Police said a third man, a 28-yearold man from Horsham, was arrested on suspicion of robbery and was later bailed until July 10. The name of the injured man was not released by police.

It’s that time of year again where we all look at our gardens with either joy or trepidation. It’s time to get back out there and have a tidy up and start planting. Many people suffer with back ache as a result of the bending and twisting movements involved with gardening. Some of this pain will be a result of repetitive strain leading to soft tissue irritation to the muscles, ligaments and tendons or some may be the result of an underling condition such as spondylosis of the spine. Back pain associated with gardening often occurs after the event, during the night or following day. Inflammation will often build up around the joints in the lumbar region, causing them to stiffen and the onset of back pain and discomfort. Sometimes the interveterbral nerves positioned very close to the swollen joints can become pinched or irri-

tated, this can lead to acute muscle spasm and possible sciatic symptoms with pain down the leg or buttocks. To help to ease pain whilst gardening always try to warm up before starting e.g a gentle walk or stretch, ease into your activity (try not to do too much in one go, and vary your activity) take regular breaks, use a wheelbarrow for heavy work and a knee pad whilst planting so you are not bending, be aware of your posture whilst digging and raking, use a roller to treat decking or fences to avoid bending. If you follow these top tips but are still struggling with pain please call Suzannna Frisby at Osteopathy Works Horsham 07876750517 or info@osteopathyworks Horsham .co.uk to book an appointment to help relieve your symptoms or for further advise.

Helping thousands of men and women service veterans in Sussex for more than 130 years has won a forces charity the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2015. The Sussex branch of SSAFA now holds what is considered to be Britain’s highest accolade for voluntary organisations, equivalent to an individual MBE. The charity, the oldest of its kind in the UK, has been recognised for its exceptional voluntary services for currently serving men and women and veterans and their families in need in West and East Sussex. The Sussex branch was launched shortly after the national organi-

sation’s formation in 1885, and assists hundreds of people a year with a wide range of need including, debt advice, housing adaption, mobility issues and general welfare support. As recognition of the award, the branch will soon be presented with a certificate signed by The Queen and a domed glass crystal by the Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex at an investiture. Alan Tait, chairman of the Sussex Branch of SSAFA for the past six years, who served in the Army as a Gordon Highlander, said: ‘It is a great honour to receive this prestigious award which is testament to the great work done by all our volunteers in East and West

Sussex and which very much reflects the tremendous work carried out throughout SSAFA across the country and overseas. Mr Tait said: “The main bulk of our recent work has been providing financial support to ensure that those who have served their country and might have fallen on hard times get to enjoy a life that they deserve. It is the very least we can do, but we are also, for example, working with local government civil military partnerships across Sussex to try to ensure that the many disadvantages they face in trying to access local facilities such as housing, healthcare and school places when they leave the armed forces are removed or mitigated.”

Memories and fun as 1,330 turn out in Race for Life

The Capitol Theatre team

Horsham Air Cadets Emotion and memories powered hundreds of people as they tackled a £90,000 target in the Race for Life in Horsham Park. Many of the 1,330 women and girls raising money for Cancer Research UK had either lost relatives, partners or friends to cancer or thankfully seen them recover after treatment. Other runners went along to support them on Sunday in the sunshine, wearing pink. They were aiming to raise £90,000 but the charity said total will not be known until everyone has returned their sponsorship money.

Jenny Ainsworth, event manager for Race for Life in Sussex said: “As ever, the women and girls who took part did us proud, as did the volunteers who help us make the event happen. “The spirit of support and friendship was tremendous; a real feeling of women uniting to do something powerful together. And as ever, some great dressing up went on turning the park into a sea of pink. “We’d like to thank every woman and girl for every step they took and every pound they raised which will help us prevent, diagnose and treat

all 200 types of cancer. “We’re now asking everyone to return their sponsorship money as soon as possible. Cancer Research UK receives no government funding so the money raised at Horsham Park is vitally important in the fight against cancer.” Air Cadets from 1015 (Horsham) Squadron worked behind the scenes at the event and Team Farlington had about 100 entrants. The Capitol Theatre team beat their 2014 fund raising with well over £1000 and people may donate at https://www.justgiving. com/teams/capitol-ladies1 or call in.

Driver banned after Amy - local chess queen Session on drugs and new drugs test used A 40-year-old man is banned from the roads for two years after refusing to allow police to test him for drugdriving. Police officers saw Carlo Poceschi driving erratically in his Ford Fiesta on the A24 at Southwater. They stopped him for questioning after seeing him drive slowly and serving from lane to lane. Poceschi struggled to walk so officers used a new DrugWipe roadside testing kit which confirmed that he had cocaine in his system. He was arrested after the incident, which happened just before 8pm on March 12. But he refused to provide a sample that would have allowed officers to confirm whether or not he had an illegal level of drugs in his bloodstream. Poceschi was then charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis and was released on bail. Less than two weeks later Poceschi was found sat behind the wheel of a Ford Fiesta that had collided with a van at 7.50am on March 25 in Balcombe Road, Crawley. He was unable to follow basic requests at the roadside, was arrested, but then refused to answer questions in custody and failed to provide a specimen for analysis. Poceschi, of The Green, Crawley, pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to provide a specimen when he appeared at Crawley Magistrates Court

on Thursday of last week. He was banned from driving for 24 months, fined £220 and ordered to pay £100 costs and a £20 victim surcharge. As part of the current Operation Dragonfly, road policing unit officers are on dedicated patrols looking for drug or drink-driving offenders throughout June.

Poceschi struggled to walk so officers used a new DrugWipe roadside testing kit Teams are responding to tip-offs from members of the public who see someone they know has been drinking getting into a car to drive. People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug driving or visit www.operationcrackdown.co.uk. You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. Stop checks are also being set up at locations across Sussex and Surrey, in particular at locations where there is intelligence that there has been a history of drink-driving.

Student Amy Hoare knows her moves when it comes to chess. She holds three national titles as under-18 British girl Champion, British and English Women’s Champion in a challenge she says she finds fascinating. Amy, 18, from Billinghurst, began playing chess in Farlington Prep School at a lunchtime club and now represents England at international competitions. She was part of the England team at the European Youth Championship in Montenegro and achieved a top 20 placing in the prestigious Guernsey International Chess Festival. Amy enjoyed great success in the British Chess Championships in Aberystwyth. In all she has played in seven British Championships, four as a junior and three in the main championship section. With about 1,000 entrants each year, it is an opportunity for the chess community to get together and compete for a range of national titles. The strong-

est chess players in Britain compete with Amy in the main Championship section. Players have to “pre-qualify”, for example by having a title such as Grand Master, winning specific tournaments or achieving a certain performance or grading. After 11 rounds played over 12 days British and English Champion prizes are awarded to highest scoring players within this section. Amy told the Post: “Chess is a fascinating game, I’m always learning. Each game is a different problem to solve; it’s all about preparing for your opponent and working out the best moves against the clock.’ Proud Amy has been showing off her trophies to school pals. Louise Higson, Farlington’s headmistress, said: “We are very proud of Amy’s achievements and are delighted to have a champion in our midst. She has worked exceptionally hard to reach such high standards, and is an outstanding ambassador for Farlington and an excellent role model for the younger girls.”

Residents concerned about the abuse of drink and drugs by youngsters may attend an open session to discuss the issues on Wednesday. The new informal Families and Friends Network sessions will take place on June 17 and July 15 at Henfield Leisure Centre, Northcroft, Henfield between 1.30pm to 3pm. The sessions have been developed in direct response to a recently commissioned survey by Horsham District Council’s Think Family Neighbourhood initiative which showed that residents in Henfield and surrounding areas were concerned about substance misuse by local young people. The Think Family Neighbourhood project includes partners from Horsham District Council, Henfield Youth Centre and Henfield Medical Centre and others, all of which have come together to support local projects and work with resident volunteers on locally identified priorities such as this. Commenting on the new scheme, Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing Cllr Kate Rowbottom said: “If you think that you or someone you know could benefit from this service I would urge you to People in Henfield concerned about young people drinking and taking drugs may attend an contact us.”

Martin Read News Reporter Horsham Hockey Chair Nick Evans likes a challenge – in 2013 he walked from London to Brighton – in one go - with fellow hockey stalwart Mark Humphreys. Laast year, Nick wanted to set himself a different task so he volunteered to walk as a guide for a blind war veteran, but was forced to abandon the walk some way in when his companion was unable to continue. Relishing the camaraderie between the walkers and encouragement from the volunteers at the check points and refreshment stops, and enthused by the people on last year’s event Nick put his 52nd birthday celebrations on hold and set off again last weekend, saying: “My father used to work at St Dunstans (since renamed Blind Veterans UK) – it’s a great cause and that inspired me to walk again. In 2013 about 100 people walked but it more than doubled last year, the event is growing in popularity.” Nick prepared well with some 30

and 40 mile training trips. The charity say that the walk “challenges your mental and physical endurance, pushing yourself to your limits” adding that the route goes through some of the most picturesque parts of London, Surrey and Sussex, meandering through countryside, hills, footpaths and fields. Nick set off from Hammersmith at 9.30 am and after 30 miles, almost half way, he told the District Post: “I’m going well – it’s a perfect day for walking and I’ve got no problems.” Despite the tricky night time navigation – Nick quipping: “That’s the worst bit, but luckily it’s only dark for five to six hours in June!” – He arrived at the Blind Veterans HQ at Ovingdean in 19 hours and 46 minutes, commenting: “It would be fair to say that my legs and feet are a little tender now! But, I’m pleased to help with fundraising to enable Blind Veterans to continue to offer the fantastic support that they provide.” Anyone wishing to contribute to this especially worthwhile cause can do so by visiting www.justgiving.com/ NickEvans2015

Students inspired by artist Perry Alert on Henfield housing

Adult education students inspired by artist Grayson Perry have a new exhibition in Horsham. “So Sorry Grayson” is open at the town's Museum and Art Gallery in the Causeway until July 4 and is sponsored by Mortgage Required Limited. The students at Collyer’s College, Horsham, have explored a number of theme variations including alter egos.

Tutor Helen Bolger said: “I have always been fascinated by Grayson Perry and his intuitive look at the lives of people and this was the starting point for the inspiration behind the idea. Having a themed piece of work throughout the year meant students could very much develop their own work using a whole range of media. “Considering a lot of students have

used some of the media for the very first time, the work is of a very high standard.” Like Mr Perry, the students have made ceramics, portraits and wall hangings as well as using experimental printing techniques. The exhibition also features stone carvings, jewellery, drawings and puppets. Mr Perry has been invited to attend the exhibition.

Bids for share of £105,000 welcomed Local good causes can bid for a share of £105,000 grant funding for projects to support people with learning disabilities or autism. Any not-for-profit organisation in West Sussex can bid for up to £20,000 towards an innovative project. The money is available from West Sussex County Council’s Learning Disability Development Fund Grant and Autistic Spectrum Condition Grant. The closing date for applications is 5pm on June 26. Projects to benefit in the last round

of grant awards included community friendship groups, the Gig Buddies scheme and support for people with autism to become trainers. Peter Catchpole, cabinet member for adult services and health at West Sussex County Council, said: “These funds have enabled us to give grants to a wide range of projects which have made a difference to people across West Sussex. “I would encourage any organisation that needs assistance with a project that will support people with learning disabilities or autism to send us their application as soon as

possible. “There are lots of local charities and organisations that could benefit from these funds and we’d love to help more of you. We very much want to make sure that the money goes to worthy causes." The funding is for a three year period. Organisations can apply for either a Learning Disability Grant and/ or an Autistic Spectrum Condition Grant. For more information and application form email Mike Smith, Service Project Manager, at Mike.Smith2@ westsussex.gov.uk

Residents have been put on alert over a new planning application for extra houses at Henfield. Objectors have asked them to consider making comments by Thursday after Stonegate Homes submitted a new application for the Sandgate Nursery Site in West End Lane. Red Hot Chilli Peppers on Weald sixth form leaving party menu

Pupils and staff became Greek gods, Toy Story characters, Thunderbird creations and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers to celebrate sixth formers leaving. They were among the themes set

by Weald Sixth Form for their annual “Leavers’ Day. It is organised by the students themselves and celebrates their hard work and dedication over the last two years as they prepare to move on to

the next stage of their lives. The lead prefects led a whole year assembly which included a quiz to see if people could recognise students from photos when they were babies. Afterwards they enjoyed activities

on the school field including inflatable volleyball and inflatable gladiators. Tom Backshall, head of sixth form said: “Leavers’ Day celebrates the fantastic sense of community at The

Weald sixth form and gives us the opportunity to celebrate all of our student’s achievements. We hope they’ve enjoyed their time here as much as we have and wish them lots of luck for the future.”

Horsham town area still waiting for cabinet voice Residents of Horsham town area will have no Cabinet member on the newly-elected district council for the time being. May’s election brought so many new faces to the council that many are relatively inexperienced. The ruling Conservatives have decided to delay the filling of the cabinet Horsham Town and Communication post, sharing the work amongst other councils for the time being while councillors gain experience. Conservatives predictably dominate the 2015-16 cabinet posts, holding all the posts. They also hold a huge majority in the council chamber, with 39 of the 44 seats held by them. Liberal Democrats hold only four seats, and Mike Morgan is the lone Independent. Leader of the Council, Ray Dawe, of Chantry Ward, said: “The council

that the district's voters have just elected is a mixture of great experience in local government and of new talent. This new cabinet reflects that great experience. “However, all its members are aware that we have a near 40% change in the composition of the council. “While we need to allow new members time to gain good working knowledge of the council, we shall need in the short to medium term, to look at how we can increase the responsibility of those members who are not in the cabinet but are able and willing to take this on. “This will ensure that as experience grows and as opportunities arise, the new talent we have gained can be fully harnessed in appropriate roles. “On advice from both the outgoing cabinet member and council of-

Woman’s fire death prompts warning from West Sussex firefighters A woman’s death in a blaze is prompting warnings from West Sussex firefighters about smoking in the home. The woman, in her 70s, died in a house fire in Hog Lane, Amberley on Friday of last week before medical staff could reach her, having been unable to get out of the thatched cottage. She had suffered from poor mobility. West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service received the first call from an automatic alarm at 4:23pm and neighbours made 999 calls. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said this week that the fire is believed to have been started accidentally by “smoking materials”. A fire crew from Storrington arrived within 13 minutes of the 999 call followed by further crews from Chichester, Littlehampton, Arundel and Worthing. On arrival firefighters found a well-developed fire on the ground floor of the cottage. A team wearing breathing apparatus entered the cottage to find the woman in the smoke-logged living room. She

had already died from the effects of the fire. The blaze was extinguished using four hose reels and four jets. Fire Investigation Officer Lee Spencer-Smith said later: “After a joint investigation with Sussex Police we believe the fire to have started accidentally, in this case by smoking materials. This is a very sad way for this lady’s life to end and our thoughts are with her family at this time. “Smoking is still the biggest cause of death in accidental house fires here in West Sussex and nationally. The most important piece of advice we can offer to smokers is to ensure that they use an ashtray and extinguish their cigarettes fully when they have finished smoking. “Sadly, the lady in this case had very limited mobility. We are working hard with our partners and the public to protect the most vulnerable in our community. If you know a family member or someone within your community who may be at increased risk from fire then please contact us on 0845 872 9719 or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire”

The Dead Parrot named the UK’s best bartending team

After six months of battling it out against some of the most talented bartenders from across the UK, The Dead Parrot impressed the public and industry experts alike with their professionalism and total commitment to making the final a night to remember. Guests were immersed into the full circus experience, from a high striker and a candy floss machine to winning your cocktail through hook a duck. The Dead Parrot really pulled

out all the stops for the final and left no cocktail glass unturned! The team served up a crowd pleasing and creative menu of cocktails, including the Bearded Lady, Hook a Buck and Tin Can Alley and secured over 489 votes. As part of the winner’s prize, The Dead Parrot will now run their own bar at London Cocktail Week from the 5-11th October 2015, which will be promoted and stocked by Monkey Shoulder. They will also get to keep all the takings made during the week

which totalled over £12,000 for the 2014 winners. The competition was designed for bartenders to work as a team to create an unforgettable experience for customers. It considered speed of service, cocktail quality, hosting ability, setting an atmosphere and ability to stock-take efficiently. Adam Manning from The Dead Parrot said: “We are over the moon to be crowned Monkey Shoulder’s Ultimate Bartenders! The whole champion-

ship from start to finish was incredible and every team in the final was equally matched with some great ideas – a really tough one to call. As well as creating some killer cocktails, we also wanted everyone to have fun and I can safely say I think we achieved that. To sum it up all I can say is that The Flying Circus is for everyone.” The Dead Parrot beat Bristol team Stirred Down and Brown and 21st Reamendment from Newcastle, who did their best to impress the crowd in a

Horsham based acts have been lining up to play at the annual Midsummer Musicfest in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice this year. This summer’s event will take place on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st June in the grounds of The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield Green, with the action kicking off at 1 pm on both days. Musicfest opens on Saturday, with local female vocal harmony group, Angel Delights. Over the years, the individual band members have finely honed their singing talent in a number of community choirs and vocal groups around Horsham and combine in the new format, to encompass a variety of musical styles from across the decades. Angel Delights are, therefore, a new ‘sum’

that is definitely much greater than the ‘parts’; with superb harmonies and clever arrangements of wellknown songs; often demonstrating the fact that the voice is the ultimate musical instrument. Local duo, Jackie & G, get Sunday’s schedule under way at 1 pm, with some easy lunchtime-listening, performing covers of popular songs, along with some great jazz classics. Former Acoustacatz singer, Jackie Evans, combines her silky voice with Gordon Bell’s creative guitar style, that should make for that perfect Sunday afternoon feeling. Music co-ordinator for Musicfest, Will Lewis said: “This summer, we have selected acts for the schedule that we hope will cater for all ages

Previously based near Littlehampton, Equine Partners CIC has recently expanded and relocated to Wisborough Green.

Now that the summer has arrived, they are opening their gates to visitors, on Friday and Saturday of next week, in order to properly introduce

We have also added a bouncy castle and ‘circus skills family fun zone’ to the event this time around. Both adults and children can try their hand at, or get some practice in, juggling, diabloing, hula hooping and plate spinning.” For full details of this year’s Midsummer Musicfest schedule, please see The Jolly Tanners facebook page, a week before the event, or phone Martin on 07704 454002.

Hopefully, there should be something for everybody to enjoy. “ Project manager for the event Martin Jeremiah, who previously ran the Horsham Community Festival and Forum Stage at Horsham District Council’s popular Music Week, added: “Many of the performers and helpers' families, including mine, have benefitted from St Catherine’s services and the response has been tremendous for this year’s event, with people generously donating raffle prizes, for example. themselves and their animals. Mother and daughter team, Fran Hibberd and Jo Marshal, founded the organization in 2010. It specialises in equine assisted learning and therapeutic horsemanship, with focus on helping both families and individuals overcome life's difficulties. As a CIC, the activities are not for profit, and solely intended for the benefit of the community, whether the specific needs are of a family requiring help with working on their relationships, or a young carer who needs a break from the demands of day-to-day life. Sessions are built on a wealth of experience. Fran and Jo are both neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) master practitioners, and combine these practices with a knowledge of solution-focused therapy, in order to help visitors to adjust their thinking and improve their relationships, whilst (with the help of their equine colleagues) witnessing situations in a different way. The partnership is also certified

by the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA), a body which ensures that practitioners work within a code of conduct and undertake continuing professional development. In addition, they run a pony share scheme and are committed to rehabilitating horses. The open days will enable a variety of stakeholders to visit and experience the work, first-hand; Each day will incorporate demonstration equine assisted learning sessions, horsemanship displays, competitions and refreshments. Visitors will be able to participate in the sessions themselves, playing games with the horses and ponies, to test their communication, as well as seeing what the facilities have to offer. Members of the team will be on site throughout the open days, in order to answer any questions. Farlington School’s Prep 4 visited Fishbourne Roman Palace on 14th May as part of their Romans topic. It was a very wet day and, unfortunately, the girls were not able to wander around the beautiful gardens. However, there was plenty to do inside, such as take in the amazing sight of the mosaics in the north wing and marvel at the intricate designs. Walking from room to room, the

girls were able to appreciate the size and grandeur of the palace and get a sense of what being a guest, at such a splendid house, would have felt like. A highlight of the day was the workshop, in which, the girls had the opportunity to write their name in Roman letters on a wax slate, design their own mosaic, use a spindle to make yarn and construct a Roman roof.

Dressed in costumes, the girls learned about the different types of clothing worn by the rich and poor. Seeing the length of a toga and hearing how it was worn, was a surprise, but what truly astonished the girls, was learning that, if they had been living in Roman Britain, they would be married off by the age of thirteen! Despite the rain, it was an enjoyable day and the girls learned much from their hands-on experiences.

HOME SERVICE Friday 12 June 7.30pm “Blistering... truculent folk-rock” ***** The Financial Times “The brass section play like the Devil’s own pit band; Graeme Taylor’s guitar can strip paint, Steve King conjures a whole orchestra from his keyboards and John Tams’s vocal smoulders and roars.” *****BBC Radio 2 Born in 1963, Whitney Houston rose to superstardom, through her awe inspiring talent, but her life, like many who experience the dizzy heights and excesses of fame, was tragically cut short. From humble beginnings in Newark, New Jersey, as a Gospel Choir soloist at the age of 11, she found her “God-given gift’.... Her voice! By the age of 14 she was working as a backing singer with notable music industry greats, including Chaka Khan, Lou Rawls and Jermaine Jackson. The 1980’s saw her do a short spell as a fashion model, whilst continuing her recording work, which led to her being signed up, in 1983, by Arista records. This would prove the launch-pad of her singing career. The release of her debut Album, 'Whitney Houston' in 1985, heralded the beginning of her rise to prominence and was swiftly followed by the release of a number of

chart-topping singles and her first Grammy Award in 1986. The rest of the decade saw her gain hit after hit and award after award, and culminated in her undertaking her first acting role in the blockbuster film ‘The Bodyguard’, for which, she also performed the soundtrack that won her a further three Grammys. Following her turbulent relationship with Bobby Brown and highly publicised divorce, she re-launched herself onto the world stage. But this was short lived. One of the bestselling artists of all time, one of the 20th century’s greatest talents and one of the most highly awarded female artists in the history of pop music, died on February 11 2012. Whitney’s legacy - her music and the style and class in which she performed it - is being celebrated in an exciting new theatre show, currently enjoying a highly successful 70 date UK national tour.

Seasoned Producer, Paul Roberts, spent many arduous weeks searching the UK for a star in the making who would have the personality and voice to be Whitney. After auditioning hundreds who aspired to the iconic role, he discovered an exceptional young talent in Rebecca Freckleton and he knew instantly that she was the one who could truly portray Whitney - Queen of the Night. Rebecca has toured internationally and worked alongside high profile artistes, including Macy Gray, Paloma Faith, The Noisettes and Jools Holland. She, together with a super talented company of singers and musicians, delivers a show, packed with hits, including 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody', 'I’m Every Woman', 'I Will Always Love You', 'Saving All My Love', 'Where Do Broken Hearts Go', 'Greatest Love Of All', and many, many more.

Children in Horsham and Billingshurst are being invited to attend a number of free sessions at local pools this Summer to help them become safe in and around the water. As part of National Drowning Prevention Week the sessions will cover basic safety advice, first aid and CPR skills as well as combining fun games and rescue activities in the pool. Drowning Prevention Week is a national campaign run by the Royal Life Saving Society UK and aims to reduce the number of drowning and

near drowning incidents that occur in the UK every year, by showing people how to be safe near water. Over 400 people drown in the UK each year and drowning is the 3rd highest cause of accidental death of children in the UK. Claire Matthews, Contract Swim Development Manager for Places for People says “We’re pleased to be involved in this year’s RLSS campaign. The event comes at the perfect time of year, just before the Summer holidays, where lots of children are out and about near the water. Our sessions are designed to be informative

and fun for children and they will take away some practical skills.” Children wishing to take part must be 8 – 16 years of age, able to swim 25 metres unaided and confident in deep water. Places are limited and must be booked in advance by contacting the centre. For more information about the events visit www.placesforpeopleleisure.org and select the relevant . The sessions are being run by local leisure operator Places for People Leisure at the Pavilions In The Park and Billingshurst Leisure Centres on the following dates.

The Queen has never had to be too concerned about her own housing. Of course Buckingham Palace was bombed during the war and there was that dreadful fire at Windsor Castle in 1992 – her annus horribilis. But with Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Holyrood House, Hillsborough Castle, Sandringham House, Balmoral Castle and Craigowan Lodge to choose from there is no shortage of royal accommodation. So housing concerns must be left to the Queen’s subjects. Royal or not, having a roof over one’s head is a big matter – one of the most fundamental of human requirements and desires whoever you are. So when the Queen read out her speech at the opening of parliament she may have been intrigued as to what her government was going to do about housing. After all

there was a lot said about it in the run up to the election. We had had plenty of mansion tax talk and debate concerning non-dom status and stamp duty rises - not to mention rent caps, three year tenancies and restricted landlord tax relief. All this without doubt helped to cool the housing market across the UK and may have even played a small role in Labour’s downfall at the ballot box. But in the event the Queen didn’t say very much about housing at all. In fact all she did say from a 1007 word speech were twenty words, "Legislation will be introduced to support home ownership and give housing association tenants the chance to own their own home." Apart from extending the right to buy to housing association tenants, housing it seems has once again been kicked into the parliamentary long grass while matters like Scotland, Europe and the Middle East sit in the much shorter grass. Without all the fears of what another government might do and now knowing what this government won’t do means that it is once again business as usual in the housing world. Already there are clear signs that the market is recovering from its pre-election jitters. This will we hope please the Queen. It certainly will please most subjects.

World ranked squash pair star in Horsham exhibition match Squash Dave Smith – Sports Editor An exhibition game took place at Horsham Squash Club at the end of May between the PSA World number 6 Peter Barker and PSA World number 14 Daryl Selby. The evening started with a doubles match with Horsham clubs own recent doubles winners Rob and James Norman playing against Peter Barker and Daryl Selby. The Norman brother’s played exceptionally well in front of their home crowd and pushed Barker and Selby more than the world ranked players had expected. Quality and fitness eventually shone through and Barker and Selby won two games to nil 11-9 and 11-7. The exhibition match was Peter Barker’s first game since the British Allam championship. Selby with vast amounts of effort went 2-1 up

but the higher ranked player pulled it back to 2-2. The final game went on for 25 minutes where eventually mistakes from Selby cost him dearly as Barker won the final game 12-10, taking the match 3-2. The exhibition game was followed by a question and answer session with the players and the evening was completed by a buffet meal made by double AA Rosette Chef Alec Makins. The sports company Wilson gave away gifts to all the club members with a number of the junior section walking away with brand new squash rackets. The club will be looking to build on this with more high profile events of this nature in the future. Horsham Squash Club prides itself on being a family friendly and active club and invites anyone interested in becoming a member to contact them on hsc@horshamsportsclub.co.uk

Horsham Joggers out in Horsham mixed team disappointed force at various events with a bronze at Olympic Stadium Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter

The Horsham Joggers South Downs relay team Athletics Dave Smith – Sports Editor Another busy weekend for Horsham Joggers saw great success at a multitude of distances and terrains. Geoff Colenso, Helen Woods, Tony Johnson, Geoff Pepper, Mal Thornton, Alan and Dan Petitt tackled the 100 mile South Downs Way Relay; ably assisted by Paul Aylett who provided the transport. The race is run over 18 legs starting at Beachy Head and finishing at Chilcomb Sports Ground, Winchester. In the beautiful surroundings of Kent’s Begdebury Forest Gemma Berill took on the challenge of a half marathon that is run entirely on forest tracks. In a field on over 530 runners Gemma finished the demanding course in a very creditable 2 hours 24 minutes. On a more traditional running surface – along the breezy Worthing seafront - a huge contingent of 37 Horsham Joggers took part in the

Worthing 10k as a part of the Sussex Grand Prix. Last year’s winner, Joggers’ Neil Boniface, finished second in 31.45 behind the race winner Chris Smith of Haywards Heath Harriers. The other Joggers who competed were: Pete O'Connell 36.14, Mark Greet 36.54, Paul Adams 39.32, Harry Wilcox 40.03, Raff Vitale 41.49, Steve Wilson 43.57, Mike Catlow 43.45, Lorraine Treadwell 44.08, Brian Frost 44.09, Laurence Carpenter 44.27, Stuart Carruthers 44.32, Keith Valentine 44.41, Matthew Payne 45.06, Guy Gilder 45.45, Kevin Croker 47.05, Paul Burgess 47.53, Lynden Kemp 47.50, Daniel Price 48.12, Geoff Fisher 48.32, Greg Collins 49.40, James Boniface 50.27, Alasdair Coyle 50.57, Neil Edmonds 51.18, Nigel Blackbee 51.30, Viv Underhill 55.01, Elisa Vitale 56.35, Paul Arnold 58.03, Andy Jefford 57.40, Elizabeth Scott 58.26, Nici Eyre 58.26, Richard Barron 59.31, Claire Miller 1.00.54, Amanda Avery 1.02.45, Claire Burrows 1.08.24, Rebecca Clay 1.10.02 and Paul Chandler 1.19.38.

In May Horsham’s mixed hockey team beat Holcombe to qualify for the National Mixed Finals weekend for the English Hockey Trophy at the Lee Valley Olympic Stadium – their second appearance at the main event in recent years. But the trip ended with a bronze medal on Sunday after a disappointing display in the semi final against Bedford on the previous day. Horsham Men’s team Manager Al Campbell said: “They started slowly but looked the better side by the end of the goal-less first half. However Bedford scored from a penalty, soon followed by a reverse stick screamer. Horsham then attacked, Joey Humphreys reducing the deficit with a trademark winner, but despite further pressure they lost a game they really should have won.” On Sunday, against Hampstead and Westminster it was more encouraging - Horsham taking an early 3-1 lead with goals from Joey Humphreys, Lou Denman and a

Horsham's Steph Dent scored in the playoff win Freddie Campbell short-corner. Yet, lapses in concentration threatened defeat until Steph Dent drew the scores back level and, with a penalty shoot out beckoning, a last gasp infringement enabled evergreen Ian Brown to convert, Hor-

sham scraping home 5-4. Al Campbell summed up saying: “Horsham play mixed hockey for social enjoyment but the national finals weekend is very competitive and we need to consider that if we are to win it.”

Stoolball comes to Billingshurst CC Stoolball Dave Smith – Sports Editor

Broadbridge Heath Stoolball Club are hosting the Chanctonbury League's annual ladies tournament at Billingshurst Cricket Club this Sunday, June 14.

Seven local teams will be playing in a round-robin tournament. There is ample parking on site for spectators and there will be a bar and BBQ throughout the day. Stoolball is a sport that originated in Sussex in the 15th century and a number of leagues exist today under its governing body,

Stoolball England. The sport was originally played by milkmaids who used their milking stools as a "wicket" and it could be the ancestor of cricket, baseball and rounders. The cricket club is situated at Jubilee Fields, Billingshurst, where play will commence at 10.00am.

Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter Both sides were missing key players in this 45 over ECB knock out cup tie, Roffey crushing newly promoted Surrey Championship side Beddington, largely thanks to a superb bowling performance from Leigh Harrison. Although the visitors lost two early wickets they recovered to 56-3 but had no answer to Leigh’s 6-18 from his nine over allocation, sliding remorselessly to 90 all out in the 26th over, Alex Collins supporting with 3-10. In response Roffey also suffered early setbacks, Beddington skipper Ryan Cummins, formerly a pro with Leicestershire and Northants striking twice. But Theo Rivers (33 not out)

and 36 from Matt Davies with 3 fours and 3 sixes made short work of the well below par target at Roffey. Delighted Roffey skipper Josh Fleming told the District Post: “We backed ourselves to chase so I put them in and Leigh bowled brilliantly. We made the most of our chances and it’s great to be through to the Regional Final, which will be against Guildford at Roffey on Sunday June 21”. Leigh Harrison added: “It was a typically decent Roffey pitch with good carry and once we got among them we kept taking wickets. I was pleased to help get us through to the next round. We’ve got a good record at home – some sides find it difficult to adapt to our ground.” Last year Roffey knocked out Guildford in a home tie in the early stages of this competition.

Roffey go second after overwhelming Eastbourne Saturday June 6 - Sussex Premier League Eastbourne v Roffey Eastbourne 153 all out (45.2 overs) Roffey 156-5 (34 overs) Roffey won by 5 wickets

An unbeaten 53 from Mike Norris steered Roffey to victory

Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter Roffey won comfortably at the Saffrons, needing little more than half their allocation of overs and only a substantial late order partnership saved Eastbourne from an even more comprehensive defeat. Roffey put Eastbourne in to bat, Leigh Harrison taking an early wicket before finishing with 3-27. A very nasty accident followed when Eastbourne captain Luke Tomsett took a blow on the head from a rapid Stuart Whittingham delivery, necessitating urgent hospitalisation precluding him from any further part in the game. Wickets continued to tumble, Ben Manenti and George Fleming taking two each as Eastbourne slid to 98-8 before opening bowler David Twine came out swinging. Twine hit 10 fours and 2 sixes, his

bludgeoning 72 enabling Eastbourne to recover to a comparatively respectable 153. With 64 overs to get the runs Roffey put on 58 for the first wicket, Josh Fleming making 40 until an unbeaten 53 from Mike Norris secured victory with 30 overs still in the bank. Roffey, with four wins from five games, move up to second on 123 points five behind Preston Nomads and clear of the next three clubs who have all played one game more. Skipper Josh Fleming told the District Post: “Had we batted first we would have wanted 220 or 230 so when we had them eight down for under a hundred they were on the ropes – until David Twine came in and whacked it. But, another good team performance enabled us to win without too much further trouble.” Tomorrow (Saturday June 13) Roffey entertain struggling Bexhill, bowled out for 91 by Nomads last week, and on Sunday (June 14) visit Horsham in the T20 cup. Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi again starred with bat and ball

through Brighton after Andy Barr had made the early breakthroughs. Two subsequent partnerships hinted at better things to come but only two batsmen reached double figures in the entire innings amid five ducks as Dhanushka bagged the last six scalps to finish with 7 for 16 off ten frugally tormenting overs. Another solid contribution from Scott Stratton (ending with 36 not out) set the stage for Billingshurst’s dynamic victory and although they were 28-2 Dhanushka again showed his class, his unbeaten quick-fire 48 containing 11 fours, Hurst romping home with 59 overs unused. Jubilant skipper Ben Williams told the District Post: “Andy Barr took an early wicket and then crucially dismissed the dangerous Philip Salt second ball. That enabled us to put the pressure on and Danny did the rest, before starring with the bat. This was potentially a difficult game for us, so it was great to come away with a big win.” Chairman Jim Burroughs added: “Having just been promoted it really is fantastic to see the team playing so well. After his excellent bowling display Danny batted brilliantly.” Jim then quipped: “The boys celebrated by going to the greyhound stadium but having promised them a good evening every time they won it’s getting rather expensive and I couldn’t afford to go!” Billingshurst, now seventh in the table with three wins from five starts, visit beleaguered Middleton tomorrow (Saturday June 13).
