Elderly couple seriously injured in car collision charlotte schroeter News Reporter
E
mergency services attended the scene of a road traffic collision which closed the B2135 between West Grinstead and Partridge Green. Firefighters released an elderly man and woman whose car left the road and went into a ditch, where it was partially submerged in water. The incident happened at about 12.10pm on Monday, February 9. It involved a blue Jaguar X-type estate which was heading north towards West Grinstead and travelling behind a blue Holland tractor, close to the junction of the B2135 with Mill Lane. For an unknown reason the Jaguar left the road and went into a waterfilled ditch, colliding with a tree. The driver, an 86-year-old man from Steyning, and his wife, 82, who was the front seat passenger, both suffered serious injuries and had to be cut free by firefighters. Both have been detained at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, for treatment to multi-
ple injuries. The driver’s condition is stable but his wife remains critically ill. Road policing officer Sergeant Phil Badman said: “The road was closed for several hours following this incident.

The road was closed for several hours following this incident “This inevitably caused long delays and I would like to thank drivers for their patience and understanding while emergency services were at the scene.” Both were seriously hurt, the woman suffering potentially lifechanging but not life-threatening injuries. ciously in or around Cootes Avenue in the last week of January please contact us. “We would also like to speak to anyone who is offered the chance to buy any of the watches cheaply.” Anyone with information should email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting serial 1738 of 30/1, call 101 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
Horsham Police investigate break-in man jailed at Steyning estate agents’ for historic sex offences A Horsham man has been jailed for historic sexual abuse offences. Nigel Smith, 49, of Livingstone Road, Horsham, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years imprisonment when he appeared at Lewes Crown Court on Friday, February 6, having originally been charged with seven counts of indecent assault of a child under 16, two counts of indecency with a child and one of actual bodily harm. The offences took place between March 1995 and March 2003. In July last year, he was found guilty of two counts of indecent assault, one count of indecency and the ABH. He was found not guilty of two other indecent assault charges and the jury was hung on the four remaining counts. In October, his appeal against conviction was dismissed by the Court of Appeal. On December 15, he pleaded guilty at a retrial to one of the indecent assault charges and the other counts were left to lie on file. He has been placed on the Violent and Sexual Offender Register (VISOR) for life. Detective Constable Simon Goulding said: “Smith has quite rightly been punished for his crimes and I thank those people who have bravely assisted us and ensured that justice has been done. “Any such incidents, no matter how historic, will be taken seriously by Sussex Police. Your call will be treated confidentially and sensitively and we urge anyone who has been a victim, irrespective of when, to call us on 101 or email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk.”
Police are investigating a break-in at Steyning estate agents Osbourn Humphreys in which an ornament depicting dogs (pictured) was stolen. The thief got into the firm’s high street premises through a window giving onto an alleyway, next to The Chequers public house. The burglary occurred at some time between midnight on Saturday, January 31 and Monday, February 2. PC John Burt, of the Horsham district neighbourhood policing team, said: “The stolen item was removed from a desk. It was a gift presented to a member of staff and consequently has huge sentimental value for that person.” Anyone who saw anything

Boost to facilities at Lancing Manor
All the award winners and those who were promoted with Group Captain Richard Maddison OBE ADC MA RAF Station Commander RAF Odiham
Last Friday, February 6, Horsham Air Cadets celebrated their achievements of 2014, at their Annual Awards Evening. The guest of honour was the Base Commander of RAF Odiham and Chinook Force Commander, Group Captain Richard Maddison OBE ADC MA RAF. Held at the Cottesmore Golf Club, the cadets and staff dressed in formal black-tie attire joined together to enjoy a formal meal, following the traditions of the Royal Air Force. The Group Captain, whose wife is from Horsham, presented the awards and gave a stimulating and amusing speech. This highlighted episodes in his RAF career and he emphasised the many benefits he saw from membership of a disciplined youth organisation such as the Air Cadets. The Cadet of the year award was awarded to Cadet Harry StanleyJones, 14, who has gone above the call of duty in contributing to the squadron and for displaying the
highest levels of deportment, commitment and ability through 2014. The Group Captain was also asked to present the Commanding Officer’s commendation to Staff to Mrs Sandra Paterson, whose hard work and dedication are an intricate part of the Squadron. The Commanding Officer of 1015 (Horsham) Squadron Flight Lieutenant Richard Foster said “This was a fantastic opportunity for Cadets to experience a traditional RAF dinner, an honour that is normally reserved for regular RAF personnel. Our guest of honour was an excellent example of how Air Cadets can lead to a long and rewarding career in the Royal Air Force“. Horsham Air Cadets is recruiting, if you are interested in joining and are aged between 12 & 18, you can contact us on 1015@aircadets. org for details of our next intake in April. We also welcome applications from adult volunteers, who can contact us on the same address.
Much needed extra care development reaches milestone moment Much needed new extra care housing for older people came a step closer today as Saxon Weald’s flagship Highwood Mill development, built by Berkeley Homes, reached the pivotal ‘golden brick’ stage. Set on the desirable Highwood development in Horsham, the scheme consists of 106 one and two-bedroom apartments for sale and rent. Extra care allows people the independence of their own apartment, with the security of a care team onsite. This means that couples where only one person has a care need can continue to live together while getting the support needed. The ‘golden brick’ marks the transfer of the land to the buyer. To mark the occasion Saxon Weald employees met Site Manager, Paul Dye from Berkeley
Homes onsite for a tour of the impressive building. David Standfast, Chief Executive of Saxon Weald said: “We are really proud to be developing these homes. I can’t wait to see Highwood Mill finished. It will give older people a chance to live independently, while being part of an active community and receiving the care and support they need” The development will include a lounge, restaurant, library, salon and landscaped gardens. As well as various social opportunities there will also be a free shuttle bus running from Highwood Mill to Horsham town centre and Tesco. Highwood Mill is due for completion in winter 2016, if you would like to register your interest please contact Aimee at Saxon Weald on 01403 226016.
Work has commenced at Impulse Leisure Lancing Manor on a project to create a new Wellbeing Studio and Community Meeting Room, plus a new larger café. The leisure centre in West Sussex has received a £35,330 grant from Sport England towards to £93,000 project. The money is part of £10 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund. A grant of £18,000 has also been awarded by The Veolia Environmental Trust through the Landfill Communities Fund. The new Wellbeing Studio will enable Impulse Leisure to offer a wider range of mind body classes, such as yoga and Pilates. The space will double up as a community meeting room, where local businesses can hold meetings or members can hold parties. The new Café will be moved into the previous de Brock Suite, giving Lancing Manor extra space for a more welcoming social area. The Café will be Coffee Republic branded and there will be a new menu and a bar. This space will be available for hire for functions in the evenings and at weekends. Stuart James, Centre Manager at Lancing Manor, said: “Our ultimate aim is to provide existing and new members with a better service and more amenities. Creating a new studio will allow us to increase our mind body classes offer, which we know members have been asking for, and it also frees up more space on studio timetable, so we can offer additional fitness classes, too.” Sport England Property Director, Charles Johnston, said: “The Inspired Facilities Fund has had a huge impact on grassroots sport across the country. Since 2011, we’ve invested £94 million into more than 1,800 projects to improve and refurbish sports clubs and transform non-sporting venues into vibrant community sports clubs. It’s great to see Lancing Manor join the long list of successful clubs to benefit from this fund.” Paul Taylor, Executive Director of The Veolia Environmental Trust, added: “We support community and environment projects across the UK and since 1998 we have awarded £2.5m to ones in Sussex. It is good to hear that this one is starting. It will create an important facility for all to use and I look forward to seeing it complete.” The project is due for completion at the beginning of March. The centre will remain open while works take place. For regular updates visit Impulse Leisure’s facebook page. MP calls for superfast broadband in rural areas
A
Last year, fibre broadband with speeds of up to 80Mbps was introduced in Storrington, Steyning, Hassocks and Henfield, and it is now coming to Hurstpierpoint, Graffham, Petworth, Pulborough and West Chiltington. The County Council’s ‘Better Connected’ programme is investing £20 million into the network infrastructure to deliver broadband speeds of over 24mps. It has already connected more than 15,000 homes and businesses with a goal of reaching 44,000 properties by the end of 2016. But Mr Herbert said that despite this progress the latest figures showed that only half (52 per cent) of his Arundel & South Downs constituency had access to superfast broadband, placing it in the bottom 100 of parliamentary constituencies (564th out of 650). The MP urged that “we should not be fixated on the fibre-based solution, which will never be realistic in the hardest-to-reach rural areas. In those areas, wireless technology or access to 4G or faster mobile data signals will become the solution.” And he called for BT’s Openreach infrastructure delivery subsidiary to be split off and potentially broken up “to inject more competition” and improve customer service. Mr Herbert also warned of “... a danger that public money is being used to close the gap in areas
where it would have provided the service anyway, and the remaining 5 per cent or 10 per cent is not being covered.” He underlined the need to ensure that future subsidy is directed to the areas which the market would not supply, and he pointed out that it is often these areas where people do not have access to mobile phone data coverage, either, and are therefore effectively disconnected. The MP urged that the technologies adopted were “future-proof”, warning that “there is a danger that in seeking to meet the commitment to wholesale coverage by 2017 or superfast coverage for 95 per cent, technologies are adopted that will not stand the test of time and will quickly be found to be insufficient.” Mr Herbert referred to the broadband ‘summit’ which he had convened in West Sussex in 2012 with West Sussex County Council which had been attended by the then Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt MP, and led to the ‘Better Connected’ programme to deliver superfast broadband across the county. The MP said that he planned to hold a second summit on how to close the digital divide, which he hoped would involve groups such as the South Downs National Park Authority, and he invited the current Culture Secretary, Sajid Javid MP, to attend.

rundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert has called for superfast broadband to be extended to rural areas to close the “digital divide” between town and country. The MP said that “access to broadband is now essential, not a luxury” and called for the break-up of BT’s “unsatisfactory monopoly” over delivery when he spoke in a Commons debate on rural phone and broadband connectivity on Tuesday, February 3. Mr Herbert welcomed the Government’s commitment to give 95 per cent of households access to superfast broadband by 2017. But he cited a report by The Rural West Sussex Partnership, a branch of the Local Enterprise Partnership Coast to Capital, which said that the real coverage achieved might be as low as 85 per cent. The MP said: “We have to look ahead and test whether what is being done will be sufficient to ensure access for those in rural areas who will not benefit from the programme.” Mr Herbert recognised the “tremendous improvement, which reflects the initiative of the Government and the County Council” in delivering superfast broadband across West Sussex, pointing out that villages in his constituency “are being connected one by one.”

Steyning Grammar School to get significant funding Following a successful bid to the Department for Education Priority Schools Building Programme, Steyning Grammar School is to receive significant funding as part of the Phase 2 school building programme and is one of only three West Sussex schools that have been accepted. Over £6 billion of investment to improve the condition of the school estate has been approved by the government, with the first investment of around £2 billion for rebuilding and major refurbishment projects. As part of this funding Steyning Grammar School will be receiving significant investment that will be directed at the replacement of all temporary accommodation on the school site with a permanent classroom block.
Head Teacher Nick Wergan Nick Wergan, Headteacher at Steyning Grammar Schools said: “Improving our buildings has been one priority of our ‘journey to excellence’ – this is an investment in our ethos of highest expectations. Staff and students are absolutely delighted that our temporary classrooms will be consigned to history. We combine a tradition of excellence with preparing students for
their exciting futures – it is great news that the small minority of our classrooms that did not meet these high standards will now be replaced with the best learning spaces for our students.” “We are delighted that the hard work, ambition and achievement of our staff and students is being recognised, and that our building provision will now reflect the innovation and high aspiration of our teaching practice.” The Priority School Building Programme Phase 2 was set up to address major building condition issues within the school estate. Studies on all schools will commence from April onwards to assess the detailed work required, together with any specific site issues, and to review the best method and timescale for delivery.

Some of the designs that will feature at the fashion show Farlington sixth form student, Ellie Burnell-Price, is organising her first fashion show on Wednesday March 18 to help promote positive body image. Ellie is producing an Alice in Wonderland themed show with clothes from the School’s textiles department and with current designers such as Hiroshi Goto, Joanna Zara Millinery and Molly Coddle Childrenswear. The show is part of her Extended Project Qualification, an independent piece of work of her own choosing, which she is undertaking in addition to her A level studies. The whole school from the Prep School to the teachers is involved in modelling, dancing, designing sets, helping back stage or front of house. In addition all 200 members of the audience will receive a gift bag. Ellie has worked very hard to gain sponsorship for these and has received contributions from Tea Pigs, TK Maxx, Mavericks Children’s Books, Day Lewis Pharmacies and Supreme Crea-

tions. Ellie has already gained some experience of the fashion world from working at Cosmopolitan Magazine’s Fashion Fest and the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Fashion in Motion shows. Money from the event will be given to Beat, the eating disorder charity, as one of her aims for the show is to promote positive body image, an area in which the fashion image often falls short. Ellie said, “There are lots of body image pressures on girls and my aim is to use fashion to alleviate this and show people how they can be confident in themselves. The show has been a huge undertaking, but everyone has been very supportive. It’s great to see everything coming together and I have learnt so much already.” The show will be held in the New Courtyard Hall, Farlington School at on Wednesday 18th March at 5.00pm Tickets for the BILLINGSH show are £5.00 and can be obtained from the School Office St Mary’s S (01403 254967). 10, East

Is Horsham haunted? Charlotte Schroeter News Reporter Are you interested in the history or Horsham? Do you believe there are ghostly happenings in the town? All-Inclusive History, a non-profit making organisation based in Washington and covering the Sussex area, is looking at the potential of a Spooky Horsham Tour. All-Inclusive History find ghost walks are a great way of getting people usually not interested in the past into looking at the history of buildings and people. There is currently a ghost tour in Worthing run by All-Inclusive History called Spooky Worthing but do you think there would be a market for a Horsham one? Internet searches and word of mouth have led to finding these ghostly goings on in and around Horsham. A monk is said to have been seen in the Causeway leading to the church. It is said that this spirit often walks between the road and churchyard though he vanishes before setting foot on holy ground. A figure has been reported in this location from various sources as well as a sighting of a headless monk. In St Mary’s church a woman took a picture behind her in March 2005 (pictured) and captured a white mist even though her camera flash was not on. A young woman from Horsham was inside the church for choir practice with her friend and they both saw ‘a whiteish something’ moving and a nearby candle nearly went out when there was no draft. Others have reported sightings in the church. An Indian princess is said to be buried in Horsham ceremony and it is said her grave faces the other way. Some people have reported seeing her.

There is said to be ghosts at the town hall which some believe are prisoners who were once locked up there. There are also reports of haunts in the Carfax that could be the ghost of John Weekes, the last man to be pressed to death in 1735. Ghostly figures have been reported in houses around the town as well as shadows, phantom footfalls, items moving by themselves and a smell of curry plants. One house in the Causeway experienced knocking at the door and found no one there and got the police involved assuming it was children messing around but neither could explained the knocking. St Leonard’s Forest has its share of stories one of which being two teenage boys who camped overnight in the forest and claimed to hear a girl screaming, saw weird lights and encountered a presence that tried to enter their tent. One of the teenagers believes a presence followed him home and opened and closed doors and manifested as a dark shape. On the A24 at Buck Barn there is said to be a ghostly tramp who walks in front of traffic. Another story at Buck Barn from 1947 was of an aging man sitting on a stone that stood up and walked into the path of an oncoming motorcycle. The cyclist felt the impact but when they turned to look what had happened, the old man had vanished. On the A23 there are also many stories including an alarmed young woman who hitches a ride from the living only to disappear once inside the car. A similar story is reported on the A24 close to Horsham of a disappearing female teenage hitchhiker. She has reportedly given a few drivers her telephone number and when the number is called, it is discovered that the girl died in an accident near the site years before.

Following some recent bicycle thefts in the vicinity of the memorial playing fields in Upper Beeding, the last being on Monday January 5, PCSO Sparks and PCSO Slaughter combined with other neighbourhood policing team colleagues to apprehend the thief. The last of the stolen bikes was located at a local address and a man was arrested for the theft of the bike. Further searches of the property led to the discovery of several other bikes and bike parts. All of which are believed to be stolen.
Team work leads to arrest of shop lifters Kevin Newman of All-Inclusive History I would love to hear your ghost stories and opinions on how spooky you think Horsham is compared to other towns, what the spookiest or most haunted house in Horsham is, and which sites you feel should be included in a ghost walk. To share your stories and views, and express interest in a ghost walk, email cschroeter@thedistrictpost.co.uk.
Sergeant Vicki Tomlinson commended some great team work after PC Munden arrested a woman shoplifter in Horsham town centre which resulted in stolen property being located and subsequently identified. At the same time a man was detained by security staff and subsequently arrested for shoplifting by response team officers that also led to the stolen property being recovered and identified. En route to assist her colleagues Sergeant Tomlinson then spotted two men and a woman

crouched behind a set of wheelie bins on Blackhorse Way. Due to their suspicious behaviour one of the men and the woman were detained and searched. Both had stolen items in their possession that they had obtained from various Horsham shops, both were arrested. Sergeant Tomlinson said “Everyone worked really well together and the assistance from the Crawley Officers, PCs Holden and Harrison was fantastic. A bit of overtime for everyone involved but well worth it!”
Horsham Police make local donations Horsham Police have made a donation of £150 to Horsham Matters to help support the running of the Horsham Churches Together night shelter. PC James Munden said: “The Horsham Neighbourhood Policing Team work closely with Horsham Matters and we are pleased to be able to support them with their winter night shelter that provides a safe place for homeless people with a local connection” In addition Horsham Police have also donated £150 to Rainbow PreSchool who are based at Storrington Village Hall, Storrington. Last chance to enter Lions Club Swimarathon
No goodwill come of it nik butler
@loudmouthman
H
orsham Lions Club are once again holding their successful Swimarathon that has over the past three years raised almost £14,000 from which Lions donated almost £10,000 to the South East Lions Air Ambulance Night Flying Appeal and the remainder for four portable defibrillators for local Secondary Schools and one for the QEII School for children with special needs. This year they are supporting The Horsham Springboard Project, who
need to replace all their equipment in their Soft Play Area of their Hurst Road Centre. The Horsham Springboard Project is a community based charity, providing a range of inclusive play and recreational opportunities for a whole range of families, children and youngsters, including those with learning difficulties. Horsham Lions are calling on individuals between the ages of 7 to 70 years, youth and adult sports clubs, organisations and local businesses for help to raise £4000, in order that all the equipment in the
“Soft Play Area” at The Springboard Project can be replaced. The Lions are inviting teams of up to 6 persons plus an adult non swimming team captain to enter the Swimarathon on Sunday, March 8, at The Pavilions in the Park. Entry is free but teams need to obtain sponsorship from family, friends and other supporters. All swimmers will be presented with a medal. The income from sponsors is split 50:50 between Horsham Lions Club (for the Springboard Project) and any other good cause that the team may wish to support. Entries need to be in by Monday, February 16, and you can obtain the Invitation Pack, including the entry form by going to the Horsham Lions Club Website: www.horshamlions@ freeuk.com or by contacting Lion Tom Osborne at tomosborne1947@ gmail.com.
I confess to mixed emotions at successful fundraising efforts on the local Horsham Facebook group. That a child now has access to words and books and ideas thanks to the generosity of the local community is evidence that the people are capable of being better than presumed. What therefore frustrates me? That the parents and carers, of individuals who through no fault of their own require assistance to lead a normal life, must constantly compete for limited resources through acts of charity and competitions. I imagine the long term effort drains the will power and enthusiasm of those in charge. Granted the individual who contributes will have a fundamental sense of well being but their own lives go on separately to those daily battles for support. Suggestions that collecting taxes and creating pride in contributing towards a social system to benefit those competing for aid are met with comments about scroungers, immigrants, and swindlers for whom the reason we cannot go on spending are given. In the face these actions by un-
seen scoundrels of social care the decision is made and the penalties are paid by those who are left to seek help through Facebook. Hundreds of families were aided in daily meals by food banks and we congratulate the charities for their “tireless” support; yet rarely do we see a question raised as to why such a wealthy nation allowed hunger to grow. Certainly there will be arguments about money squandered on mobile phones or flatscreen TVs but I challenge anyone to buy anything less than a flatscreen TV or cheap mobile phone in todays high street. These are not marks of affluence, or waste, but icons of ignorance by those seeking to detract from the reality that having paid income tax and national insurance the community will pay again to charity and through good will to fill in the gaps left by councils and government. Parties whose powers have been gained through a willing desire to confuse the issue of hard working, and hardly working families, how taxes which when gathered can take the pressure from each of us. By all means dip once more into your pockets for the next goodwill effort but as you do, look hard at the party or councilor who praises the value in freezing your taxes for another year. You are paying in one way that which you save in another.

Set the scene for success
Looking after your staff certainly helps morale and hopefully productivity follows. It’s not always easy but a welcoming work environment is a good starting place. With an idyllic rural setting just a few miles from Horsham, Eastlands Park offices provide well presented, practical office space set over two floors, where character comes as part of the package. Andrew Algar, head of commercial at Henry Adams estate agency, said: “These offices have the character of beams with the
practicality of modern lighting and cabling. It’s a very attractive setting being part of a courtyard of residential cottages, equestrian stables and storage buildings and the far reaching views could even inspire staff and reduce stress but whether or not that’s the case, there’s no doubt it’s a great place to work from.” The property comprises three first floor offices and a ground floor office plus office/kitchenette and toilet, totalling approximately 1,056 sq ft. Good onsite
parking is available and the A23 with its fast connecting links to the M23 and A27 is approximately three miles distant. The offices are available to let upon a new full repairing and insuring lease for a term to be agreed with a rental of £13,750 per annum. Further information is available at www.henryadams.co.uk and enquiries or viewing arrangements can be made through Henry Adams Commercial by contacting Andrew Algar on 01403 282 519 or andrew.algar@henryadams.co.uk.

Just 1 in 11 Brits manages to stick to their new year’s resolutions. The other 10 fail to keep up good intentions beyond three months according to a recent poll. But if getting fit, making friends, saving money and feeling happier are this year’s goals, the Out and About Club could provide a long-term answer. ‘I am the Lord of the Dance Settee’
Have you ever considered the amazing power of the sombrero to eradicate all sadness? Noticed the terrible curse of the UK’s oldest person? (whoever receives this poisoned chalice is always dead within months). Become disillusioned with organised religion when you realise a childhood mishearing of a hymn means Jesus isn’t anywhere near as much fun as you thought? Lord of the Dance Settee is Richard Herring’s eleventh stand-up show in eleven years. Having sorted out politics (Hitler Moustache), religion (Christ on a Bike), love (What is Love, Anyway?), death (We’re All Going to Die!) and spam-javelins (Talking Cock), he is in a frivolous mood with a show about daftness, being uncool and bouncing joyously on a sofa. He returns to The Hawth Studio with his new show on Friday, March 6. Richard Herring has performed at nearly every Edinburgh Festival Fringe since 1987. In the 1990s he was in a double act with Stewart Lee (whatever happened to him?) in BBC2 cult classics Fist of Fun and This Morning with Richard Not Judy. More recently he has created a raft of Sony and Chortle Award winning podcasts like Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast, As It Occurs To Me and Me1 Vs Me2 Snooker. You might have read his weekly column in the Metro, heard him on Just a Minute on BBC Radio 4 or seen him on a panel show being repeated on Dave. The show takes place on Friday, March 6, at 8pm at The Hawth, Crawley. Tickets cost £16.50. To book your place call The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or visit www.hawth. co.uk.

Aida on the Charm Offensive in Crawley Fascinating Aida, Britain’s bestloved comedy cabaret trio, who in 2013 celebrated 30 years of their unique brand of filthy, witty and fabulous entertainment, will finish their epic tour of hit show Charm Offensive with a final potty mouthed journey round the UK during Spring 2015, including The Hawth this March. Despite being around since before the birth of the internet, Fascinating Aida has clocked up over 17 million views on YouTube and counting, and their videos have become viral phenomena multiple times. Dillie Keane, Adele Anderson and Liza Pulman’s infamous anthem to budget travel, Cheap Flights has had over 12,000,000 hits to date, both officially and thanks to multiple uploads from fans, including translations into Hebrew, Russian and Italian. In 2013, they released a freshly minted song on YouTube entitled ‘The Ofsted Song’ which gained 100,000 hits within 7 days of posting. Finally, they released their own outrageous Christmas Carol “Try Not To Be A C*** at Christmas” – in 2013 it had 150,000 hits in a fortnight, and 60,000 on Christmas Day alone. When re-released on Facebook for 2014, it was viewed over 750,000 times in just 4 days. And not forgetting Dilliie’s infamous dirty ditty Dogging, which has had 2,000,000 hits and counting. Dillie Keane founded Fascinating Aida in 1983 (and was joined by key writing partner Adele Anderson in 1984) and since then the group
has played in hundreds of theatres in the UK and Ireland, with London seasons at the Donmar Warehouse, Lyric Hammersmith, Piccadilly, Vaudeville, Garrick, Apollo and Comedy theatres and the Theatre Royal, Haymarket. They have toured Australia three times, including a month at the Sydney Opera House, and also played New Zealand, San Francisco, New York, Berlin, Kenya, South Africa and Singapore. As Dillie herself says, “we’ve never been off the fekking road, and we’re too old to retrain.” They have made numerous television appearances and radio recordings, released seven CDs, three DVDs, two videos, an autobiography and a songbook, and have also been nominated for several awards - Perrier (once), Olivier (3 nominations) and New York Drama desk (3 nominations). In 2013 they won Best Musical Act in the London Cabaret Awards. The show takes place on Friday, March 20, at 7.30pm, The Hawth, Crawley. Tickets cost £21.50. To book your place call The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or visit www. hawth. co.uk.

Rocking at The Capitol in March A night of dirty dancing at The Capitol
This March, The Capitol, Horsham will be the home of rock as it presents three rock shows from top acts. Friday, March 13, brings Magic, A Kind Of Queen the first and arguably the best tribute to Queen performing all of Queen’s greatest hits plus some you may not have heard for a while in their latest show for 2015. The show takes place at 8pm and tickets are £19.50. Classic Legends Of Rock & Folk
showcases three bands on Saturday, March 14, at 7.30 pm. Martin Turner and his band play the music of Wishbone Ash. Carl Palmer & his band perform Emerson Lake & Palmer and more. The Strawbs comprise of David Cousins along with lead guitarist Chas Cronk who together formed the front line of the classic 1970’s line up of the band. Tickets are £25.50. For all those Stones fans, The Counterfeit Stones, billed as “The Most famous Stones Band in Eng-
land” by Mick Jagger himself, perform faithful and faultless renditions of The Stones’ greatest hits. Buying a ticket to this show will only leave you rockin’ from the music, not the dent in your bank balance with tickets priced at £21.00. The Band play at 8pm on Thursday, March 19. So come along to The Capitol and enjoy some fantastic rock music ! To book tickets, contact the box office on 01403 750220 or visit www.thecapitolhorsham.com.

Z is for Zinc and other minerals
Z
inc may be classed as just a trace mineral, accounting for just 0.003% of our body but without it we would not be able to live. It has a number of vital functions such as activating growth, cell division, aids T-cells to fight infections, helps the renewal of skin cells, is important for healthy hair, thyroid function, taste, smell and even prevents the development of cataracts. Essential minerals include calcium, phosphorous, sulphur, sodium, magnesium, potassium and chloride. Add to these the trace minerals of iron, iodine, selenium, chromium, copper and fluoride and is it any wonder that people feel they need to take supplements to ensure their bodies remain healthy. However, given a balanced and well rounded diet, all the minerals you require at any time of life can be found naturally in our foods. It
is only when we chose or have to eliminate certain foodstuffs that we can suffer from a lack of all or some mineral intake. Vegans and vegetarians are unlikely to obtain enough zinc as it is found predominately in red meat and shellfish. Whilst there are plenty of vegetarian foods with an adequate zinc content, eating whole grains and plant proteins can interfere with the body being able to absorb zinc. Iron and calcium can also be lacking in such diets so it is worth knowing what foods can be included to ensure a healthy intake of minerals. There are many other essential minerals and, of course, vitamins also. Choose fresh, delicious food in a well balanced diet to ensure you get all you need. For the A-Z of Real Food visit www.horshammarkets.co.uk.
Farlington pupils go behind-the-scenes at Wagamama
MINING FOR MINERALS CALCIUM - for bones, teeth, regulating heart beat, blood clotting found in dairy, green leaf vegetables, soya beans, nuts, flour and fish where bones are eaten such as sardines. COPPER - great for blood cells and releases iron to create the haemoglobin carrying oxygen around the body making it good for growth, brains, the immune system and bones. Nuts, shellfish and offal are amongst the best sources. IODINE - best sourced from sea fish, shellfish, cereals and grain as it found in seawater and soil. Helping to make thyroid hormones for cells and to maintain a healthy metabolic rate but too much can lead to problems with the thyroid gland. IRON - essential for making red blood cells to carry oxygen around the body and, apart from meat, can be found in nuts, whole grains, dried fruits and dark leaf vegetables such as kale. PHOSPHORUS - useful for strong bones and teeth and aids the release of energy from food. Similar to zinc, it is found in red meat, dairy, fish, bread but also poultry, rice and oats. POTASSIUM - one of the minerals we need the highest quantity of to help balance body fluids and even thought to lower blood pressure but is found in many foods from fruit, vegetables, nuts, milk, fish, meat and bread. SELENIUM - eggs, fish, meat and brazil nuts are the best sources and this mineral ensures our immune system remains strong and helps reproduction.
On Wednesday, January 28, Farlington School’s Prep 2 headed into Horsham to visit Wagamama, the Japanese restaurant and noodle bar. The girls were welcomed by the manager and were given an introduction to Wagamama. The head chef showed them to the restaurant and ran three practical sessions for them. The six- and seven-year-olds learnt how to take orders and were guided through the menu. They were brought a tray of authentic Japanese
ingredients to try and were taught the names of the exotic items. The girls tasted a variety of ingredients including pink-coloured ginger, spiced cabbage, seaweed and yellow-coloured radish; some were met with more approval than others! They were split into two groups, having donned blue hair nets, for a tour behind-the-scenes including a quick visit inside the huge freezers. It was interesting to learn about the fresh ingredients used and taste freshly-made apple and carrot juice.
The head chef instructed them in food preparation: weighing ingredients with special scales, explaining why weighing is important and the importance of hygiene. Each girl then had the chance to weigh the ingredients which would be used to make their noodle sample. Finally, the girls had a chance to taste the delicious noodle dishes which they were served and were delighted with the fantastic goody bag they each received! An informative and tasty trip was had by all.
SODIUM CHLORIDE - found mostly in salt and whilst a high intake of salt can be very bad, we do need it to maintain a healthy balance of body fluids. Foods that include it are seaweed, rye, tomatoes and celery. ZINC - high sources include red meat, shellfish, milk, cheese, bread and wheat germ which is essential for cells and healing together with processing carbs, protein and fat in our foods.

Have a berry good Valentine’s Day What are your plans for this Valentine’s Day? A Chinese meal? An Indian meal? Maybe a steak? Or perhaps the good old favourite of fish and chips? In a recent report by food psychologist Dr Christy Fergusson, berries are claimed to be the ultimate love food and are just what is needed to put some zip into a Valentine’s Day spent with your partner. Dr Christy Fergusson said, “This Valentine’s Day, the best food to get you in the mood is a handful of berries. They contain a number of nutrients and compounds which help your body feel frisky. Packed with soluble fibre and slow releasing energy, you will be guaranteed to keep your stamina up.” However If the thought of you and your partner eating a few berries throughout the day leaves you cold instead of hot then why not try the one day berry diet which combines berries with other ingredients to come up with the ultimate Valentine’s Day breakfast, lunch and evening meal.
Here is the one day seasonal berry diet, why not give it a try. Breakfast: Porridge topped with blueberries, almonds and a drizzle of honey or golden syrup. Add oats to a saucepan; pour in milk (dairy, almond, coconut, oat milk) or water. Bring to the boil, simmer and stir for 4-5 minutes. Pour into bowls, add blueberries and almonds. Drizzle over a little honey or golden syrup. Lunch: Tomato and basil soup with dash of fresh chilli for that extra kick. Followed by a blackberry and raspberry fruit salad Preheat the oven to 200°C, 400°F, Gas Mark 6. Place the 1 kg of halved tomatoes and 2 whole garlic cloves in a roasting tin, drizzle with olive oil, season and add chopped fresh chilli. Roast for 20 minutes. Spoon tomato mixture into a food processor. Squeeze in the cooked garlic, removing the skin. Pour in 1 pint of vegetable stock with 8 chopped basil leaves and a fresh chopped chilli.
Blend until smooth. Add to a pan and reheat before serving. Serve with brown seeded crusty loaf. Follow with a blackberry and raspberry fruit salad. Dinner: Wild Alaskan salmon with dark leafy greens followed by strawberries dipped in a chocolate fondue. Grill 2 wild Alaskan salmon fillets for 15 minutes under a medium heat. While the salmon grills, take a large bowl, mix together 1 ½ tbs of olive oil, 1 tbs lemon juice, ½ clove of chopped garlic and ½ inch of grated root ginger. Add 3 cups of mixed leafy salad greens such as watercress, rocket and spinach toss to coat. Season with rock salt and black pepper. For dessert, warm 8 ounces of cream over medium heat until it gently simmers. Add 12 ounces of dark chocolate and whisk. Transfer to a fondue pot on a slow flame. Use a fondue fork to dip the strawberries into the mixture and devour immediately.

Oaks Close £450,000 This generous detached family home is perfectly located for the local shops, schools and train station. Throughout the accommodation is generous, particularly so on the first floor which offers four double bedrooms, a rarity in homes of a similar size and price. Additional benefits are the quiet residential cul-de-sac which is safe for families, the large kitchen and the fantastic south facing rear garden. You enter the property in to a bright entrance hall which offers stairs to the first floor, a storage cupboard along with a downstairs cloakroom. There is also access from here in to the integral single garage which if required, could be converted to add further reception space, a family room or study. Beyond the hall there is a bright kitchen/breakfast room which looks out on to the rear garden and provides plenty of room for a table and chairs. There is ample storage and worktop space making this an ideal place to create family meals. From here you enter the main reception (also accessed via the hallway) which is a fantastic size. The double aspect ensures maximum light and the space easily accommodates a large dining room table as well as your sitting room furniture. Again there is an aspect over the rear garden along with a set of sliding doors that provide access to it, which is particularly appealing in the summer. The first floor is as equally impressive as the ground floor and ideal for a family who need good size bedrooms. All would be considered double rooms but both the master and second bedrooms offer a great deal of space along with fitted wardrobes. There is a modern central family bathroom and it is our feeling that there would be ample opportunity to create an en-suite in one of the adjoining rooms if required. Come along and join us for the open day on 28th February at 12pm.

There are also several outlying villages in this semi-rural part of the county and a mainline station. Why wouldn’t someone want to live here?” The branch sells a range of beautiful properties, from a two double bedroom period cottage on the market at £550,000 to a 200-year-old, 7-bed property worth £1.3m. Horsham suffer last gasp defeat
Horsham stumble against Maidenhead
Saturday February 7 - South League Premier Division 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 3 - 4 Henley Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter
H
orsham looked the better side against runaway league leaders Henley but after being a goal up at the break they paid the penalty for a desperate session early in the second half when the visitors scored three times in quick succession. Yet, Horsham fought back strongly to equalise only to concede the deciding goal in the dying minutes. Horsham mounted a series of first half attacks with Jack Dean and then John Burroughs probing the Henley defence. But it was Cirdec Atkinson who opened the scoring following another excellent Horsham build up. The Horsham defence kept three Henley short corners at bay but after the interval such set pieces proved crucial. First Henley scrambled the ball in on the rebound from a save to equalise, then they scythed through Horsham’s previously sound defence with a well taken goal before slotting home a repeat of their first short corner goal to lead 3-1. With the umpire

calling for calm, bruising Henley were carded, again reducing them to ten men as Horsham earned four short corners without finding the net, until they finally got through in open play with Noah Chinn reducing the deficit. Ten minutes later Horsham levelled when their eighth short corner rebounded from the keeper onto a defender and into the goal. Five minutes from the end Horsham thought they had won the game but the goal was disallowed before Henley stole victory right at the death by converting anoth-
er short corner. Club Captain Nick Kimberley said: “We had most of the game but a really bad five minutes early in the second half cost us dearly. Their defence was very quick in coming out to neutralise threats but we showed great character to fight back from their rapid hat trick.” Now fourth with their promotion hopes dented Horsham travel to London Edwardians (fifth) tomorrow (Saturday February 14) whom they beat 3-1 at home earlier in the season.
Hawks crush the Bears
After the interval Josh Tavolieri and Meghan Stevens of the Hawk’s stamped their authority on the game by battling hard for rebounds. This and unselfish play and great passing from Lea-Clayton and Antonio Lozzi set up team mates for easy scores building a 72-18 advantage at the end of the third period. A 24-2 Hawks run closed out the game with solid defence and confident scoring from the relentless Miguel Venturini. There were also impressive contributions from the newest members of the Hawks squad with Anaya Wakefield demonstrating tremendous energy and Isla Head and James Lowe both opening their own scoring accounts. Horsham remain second in the Sussex League with seven wins in eight games. Next up is a home fixture against last season’s Sussex Cup winners, the Brighton Cougars. Scorers: Josh Tavolieri – 26, Josh Lea-Clayton – 20, Miguel Venturini – 14, Harry Rose– 10, Charlotte Wilcox – 9, Jamie Coulson – 6, Antonio Lozzi - 3, Amy Wilcox – 2, Meghan Stevens – 2, Isla Head – 2, James Lowe - 2, Anaya Wakefield.
Five wins out of five for Hawks U 12 team
Horsham Hawks U12 96 – 20 SRWA Bears U12 Youth Basketball Dave Smith – Sports Editor The U12 Horsham Hawks made it five wins in as many games with a convincing 96 - 20 home victory over the SRWA Bears. The Hawks got off to a blistering start with six straight points from Josh Lea-Clayton to open the game. The energised hosts continued to extend the lead to
14-0 before a spirited Bears team fought back and began to find their own shooting touch trading baskets in the latter stages of the first quarter which ended with Horsham leading 26-8. In the second quarter the Hawks tightened up defensively with Amy and Charlotte Wilcox disrupting the opposition and forcing mistakes that were quickly converted into points by Harry Rose and Jamie Coulson, increasing the Hawks lead to 44-12 at the half.
Saturday February 7 – Women’s Conference East Maidenhead Ladies 1st XI 4 - 1 Horsham Ladies 1st XI Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham had an unhappy return to league action after their prolonged mid season break, coming unstuck against mid table Maidenhead whom they beat 3-2 at home in September. Horsham began the season with two wins and a draw from their first three games but have now lost eight of their last nine matches to again find themselves in the danger zone as the business end of the season approaches.
The Berkshire hosts led 2-0 at the break after scoring in the fifth and twelfth minutes. They went further ahead after the interval before Charlotte White put Horsham on the score sheet, but Maidenhead scored again to put the result beyond doubt. Horsham slip to ninth on goal difference, one point ahead of basement club Bedford. Coach Ben Allberry told us: “We weren’t quite there today – it was one of those games. We’ve got six fixtures left to get ourselves out of trouble. We play Sevenoaks (at Broadbridge Heath tomorrow, Saturday February 14) – they’re second, then we go to league leaders East Grinstead, so it won’t be easy. We’ve just got to get what we can from those games and then take it from there.”
Spirited performance by Hawks ends in defeat Worthing D&D U14 69 – 47 Horsham Hawks U14 Junior Basketball Dave Smith – Sports Editor A spirited Horsham Hawks U14 team lost 69-47 to a big and powerful Worthing D&D team but showed great improvement on their performance from the previous encounter with D&D earlier in the season. Hawks started well with their attractive play leading to early points from Maclean and Lee before Maya Le Rossignol joined the fray and showed her talent from the line to ensure a comfortable and impressive 16-11 lead for Hawks going into Q2. The pattern continued after the break as Le Rossignol and Lee added 3 more buckets without reply while great work from Millie Lea Clayton, leading the defensive duties, allowed Hawks to extend their lead to double digits. D&D then quickly hit 3 long range 3 pointers bringing them back into the game which resulted in them taking a 30-28 lead into the half time break. The second half started with
Hawks again producing some splendid basketball with Le Rossignol frequently in the right place at the right time to finish off some flowing plays allowing Hawks to go 37-32 up. D&D again battled back upping their defensive intensity which Hawks struggled to cope with for the first time in the evening. With Hawks stamina levels sapping and poor decision making proving costly the turnovers increased. Another D&D 3 was the catalyst for them to go on a scoring blitz which Hawks struggled to contain. Q3 finished with Hawks down 4738 and the pattern continued in the final quarter as D&D were able to score at will. Lee and Tegan Holden briefly stemmed the flow with their own scores and Hawks did well to finish with pride outscoring their opponents in the last few minutes but bowing out on the wrong end of a 69-47 score-line. Hawks scorers: Kieran Lee – 17, Maya Le Rossignol – 10, James Maclean – 10, Michail Manthios – 2, Tegan Holden – 2, Millie Lea Clayton – 2, Ellie Hutchinson – 2, Josh Raby - 1, Jamie Miller – 1, Joe Kershaw, Robert Hartley.

The Green and Whites now go on to face either Crowborough or Haywards Heath in the final on May 9, and the possibility of a league and cup double for the first time in the club’s history. The victory maintained Horsham’s nineteen point lead over third placed Bromley and two more wins from the final six games will ensure promotion. Boro shade Fokestone in a tense nail biter rugby
Martin Read – Sports Reporter
Saturday February 7 - London 3 South East League Pulborough 13 - 12 Folkestone Pulborough halted their run of five consecutive losses with a nail biting win against Folkestone – who had won four of their previous five outings – avenging a heavy defeat at the hands of
the Kent side in October. Boro led 13 -12 at half time courtesy of a Harry Perry try converted by Frazer Oliphant-Hope and two penalties from the boot of Simon Burfield, Folkestone’s points coming from two tries, one of which was maximised. Harry was subsequently forced to leave the field with a rib injury en route to hospital. Although neither side scored in the second half it was a mighty close run thing, Team Manager Roger Hunt telling the District Post: “This was an excellent cracking result for us – a good win
and a very nice scalp to grab. It was end to end stuff and we just managed to edge them out in a very tight game after they missed two long range penalties in the final moments. We were obliged to blood some colts and it was particularly pleasing to see them doing well, Joe Taylor impressing on the wing.” Boro remain eighth, five points ahead of Gillingham Anchorians, against whom they return to league action on February 21 after beating the Kent side 29-23 at home in November.
Horsham Joggers at the Chichester 10K Athletics Julia Johnson – Horsham Joggers The Chichester Priory 10K is the first race of the year in the Sussex Grand Prix series and always attracts a strong field. Other leading times from Joggers were: Mark Greet 36:11, Pete O’Connell, who was 2nd in his age category M50-59 in 36:14, Matthew Anstee-Brown 36:24, Dean Angell

In addition two Horsham Joggers completed the Wokingham Half Marathon last Sunday. Mal Thornton finished in 1:28:58 and Carol-Anne Davies-Jones in a personal best of 1:35:52.
Lancing upset the form book against Heath Saturday February 7 - Sussex County League Div 1 Broadbridge Heath 0 - 2 Lancing Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor Broadbridge Heath came into this game on the back of some good form which has seen Steve Painters side move into mid-table, collecting 12 points in their last six games and scoring 19 goals in the process. Whereas Lancing’s form has not been quite so impressive with just four points gained and 18 goals conceded in their last six. Heath started brightly with Ollie Moore forcing the Lancing keeper Callum Fidler into a finger tip save to push his goal bound effort wide of the post then minutes later Tiago Andrade saw his overhead scissor kick go just over the Lancing cross bar. But midway through the half, and against the run of play, it was Lancing who took the lead. A through ball was played to Alex Fair who looked a couple of yards offside but while the Heath defenders stood with their hands in the air appealing for offside, the Lancing player ran through unhindered on
goal and finished well to beat Michael Chester. Early in the second period Moore hit a first time effort wide of the post from a Mark Bevan cross but despite having the majority of possession Heath just couldn’t break down the defensive wall put up by Lancing. Manager Steve Painter went three at the back and pushed Dan Attwater up front in the hope the defender could open up the Lancing defence but Lancing remained solid and in injury time a swift counter attack allowed Williamson a free run at goal and the midfielder finished in style to seal the win. After the game Heath manager Steve Painter said “I was disappointed with our performance, you will always get one or two players below par but it’s rare to have so many players performing so badly”. He added “It was our worse performance of the season but full credit to Lancing who defended well in numbers and scored two very good goals, albeit the first was miles offside”. Heath Team: M. Chester, Alfieri, Bevan, Carruthers, Attwater, Bhujun (Holmes 60), Moore, Waddingham, McDermott, Andrade (McNab 80), Sultan.

Billinghurst U11 1 - 3 Chesworth Rovers U11
Chesworth Rovers go through to the knock out stages of the Heron Way cup as group leaders having won against Billinghurst. Chesworth are unbeaten so far in the cup and both teams went for a win in this contest that produced end to end football from start to finish. Billinghurst scored first tapping home a loose ball from a corner. Chesworth fought back and when Toby broke free down the right wing, his cross ball was met by Fletch who volleyed home for 1 - 1. In the second half Nyle whipped a
ball across goal and Fletch was there again, ahead of the keeper for 1 - 2. Then 5 minutes from time Lewis lobbed the defenders to set Fletch away one on one with the keeper to score, completing his hat-trick to leave Chesworth 1 – 3 winners.
AFC Uckfield 0 – 2 Roffey
Roffey progressed into the quarter finals of the County League Cup with a 2 - 0 over AFC Uckfield. Uckfield started strongly and had the greater possession for the opening periods, but Roffey took hold of the match as time went on. Roffey’s dominant period of play saw them take the lead when Callum Nash was brought down the in box and the referee awarded a penalty, which Nash converted.
Horsham YMCA recorded their first three points of 2015 with a comfortable 4-0 win over tenman Crawley Down Gatwick in Division 1 action last Saturday. The victory lifts YM back into the top half of the table, but manager Peter Buckland was left feeling a little frustrated that although his side dominated proceedings, they once more failed to convert an abundance of chances in front of goal. Dave Brown opened the scoring on his return from three games out through suspension after just eight The second half was evenly matched but after some good work down the right by Joe Wright and Callum Nash, Liam Ruz made the final score 2-0 to Roffey which booked themselves a quarter final spot against Eastbourne.
Horsham Sparrows Under 12 – A close game that was
competitive throughout, Sparrows lost narrowly to a strong East Grinstead Meads team. Despite an incredible penalty save from man of the match Seb J between the sticks, the team couldn’t deny their hosts a victory. Under 13 – The team played away at Three Bridges in a Division A league match. This was always going to be a tough match having lost 8-0 in the earlier home game. The whole team put in a tremendous effort, competing all over the pitch to only lose narrowly 1-0. The Man
minutes, and it looked as if the floodgates would open. But despite numerous opportunities to extend their lead and the sending off of hosts’ midfielder Sam Cane seven minutes after the break, Buckland’s side didn’t add to the score line until late in the second half, when three goals in the final quarter of an hour from brothers Dan and Nick Sullivan and substitute Taylor Smith secured the win. Manager, Buckland, commented: “If I’m being honest, it’s nothing less than I’d expected. They [Crawley Down Gatwick] are in a transitional stage as a club and we needed to cash in on that. At times during the game if it had been a boxing match it would have been stopped, but we made hard work of things with our finishing again. It could have been 10-0 and it should have
been a lot more comfortable than it was. “But credit to the players because they kept going. We must have had about twenty shots on goal to their one, which says it all to be honest. We totally dominated the game, but it’s just a tad frustrating when we keep missing these opportunities. Hopefully this will give us a bit of a confidence boost now. It’s nice to get on the winning track again. I’m looking at us going the rest of the season now without losing a game.” Goalscorers - D. Brown (8) D. Sullivan (74) N. Sullivan (84) T. Smith (85). of the Match was keeper Louis who made a number of great saves. Under 14 – The team travelled to Lower Beeding and after an end to end first half went in level at the break. Despite an outstanding performance by stand in keeper Rhys B and a great all round team effort, the hosts took the lead deep into the second half. The game finished 1-0 to the hosts with Dominic H getting man of the match. Under 11 girls – The team travelled to Crawley and after an end to end first half took the lead early in the second with a great goal from Caitlin. The hosts turned on the pressure and an equaliser was soon followed by the winning goal. The team are improving all the time and this was a good performance. Freya was player of the match. Under 12 girls – The girls competed at the U12 Futsal Tournament last
Sunday at Southwick. With victories over all three teams in their mini league and topping the group the next stop is the final play offs. They won hard fought victories against Mile Oak (2-1) and Eastbourne Borough (1-0) and beat Lewes Bridge View 6-0 with hat-tricks from Holly S & Maisie P. Under 13 Girls – The team played very well in the first half with Ellen, Emily and Ellie in defence keeping a really strong line which allowed the team to get forward. Becca scored her first and second goals for the team. Leading 2-0 at half-time it was Sparrows best half of football this year but third placed Worthing came back strongly with two quick goals and then managed to get the winner five minutes before the end. Girl of the game for her ‘brace’ was Becca.

No luck and no points once again for Horsham
Bailo Camara heads the equaliser plauding the referee’s decision of added time if Richie Welch had scored from the good chance he had to win it deep into the five minutes. But as so often of late they were left to feel hard done by when from the Welch chance Merstham broke away and scored, taking all three points and dealing Horsham another defeat. To be honest not many would have expected Horsham to get anything at Merstham but the nature of the defeat and the decent performance the Hornets put in made this

came a little more to life, Berry had a weak attempt saved and Hornets keeper Williams pulled off a great stop from Tre Metford. However Williams was guilty of an error on 27 minutes when his poor goal kick picked up by Chipstead’s Andrew Dalehouse who returned the keepers kick back into the net to give Chipstead a one goal lead. Richie Byrne had a goal bound header saved well by the visiting keeper before a controversial penalty decision gave Horsham a way back into the match. Trevor McCreadie went down just inside the box and the referee adjudged it to be a foul to the annoyance of the
latest ‘nil points’ difficult to take. Tomorrow (Saturday 14) Horsham take the flight to Guernsey for a 1.00pm kick off. Another difficult fixture, but for a team sitting bottom of the league they are all difficult. Once again points will need to be grabbed from the Channel Islanders, and most of the remaining opponents, if ‘The Great Escape’ is to be realised. Ex Hornets boss Simon Colbran had a winning return to Gorings Mead last Saturday when, in only his second game in charge, his new side Chipstead took all three points leaving Horsham with an ever increasing struggle to maintain their Ryman League status. In what was a game lacking in both quality and excitement Tom Gilbert and Lewis Hamilton were
again unavailable through injury with Jack Page and Gregg Berry both making the starting line-up. The lack of any action worthy of mention on the pitch did little to warm the supporters on a bitterly cold afternoon that saw some dire play from both sides in the opening twenty minutes. For the Hornets, a Tom Vickers booking and a too high cross from Welch was about it in the early stages. The visitors nearly scored however when Chipstead’s Derek Tieku took advantage of an error from Welch that allowed him to get a shot in on goal that Williams just managed to keep out at the second attempt. s with the Chipstead defeat four days earlier, Horsham can consider that they were again unfortunate to not come away with something from this difficult fixture against promotion chasing Merstham. However come away with nothing is what they did and one point from the last four games is the sort of form that will condemn the Hornets to relegation. To compound things fellow relegation strugglers Redhill beat South Park 3-2, a result that dumps Horsham back to the foot of the league table. It was however another game where the officials played a part in Horsham’s downfall with referee Daniel Berry somehow finding five minutes of stoppage time from a half where neither physio had been called into action. Inevitably with the way things are going for the Hornets Merstham hit the winner deep into those five added minutes to break the hearts of the travelling support, players and staff.

The Hornets were without Richie Byrne, Joe Obersteller and Ehis Izokun started and there was a place on the bench for the returning Mark Zawadski. In a fairly even first half Tony Nwachukwu had a header saved from an offside position and Tom Hughes headed just wide. Merstham however looked the more comfortable on the ball as would be expected from a team in their lofty league position. With the game looking to go into the break goalless Merstham captain Tommy Hutchings effort from the edge of the area just before the half time whistle went passed the previously untroubled Hornets keeper Williams to give his side the lead and to deal Horsham a body blow. Bailo Camara came on for McCreadie in the second half and the game continued to be an evenly matched contest with neither keeper having to produce miracles. Then on 67 minutes Camara met an Nwachukwu cross and sent his glancing header passed Merstham keeper Brannan Daly to give the Hornets a deserved equaliser. Horsham received a further boost on 80 minutes when Merstham’s Aaron Rhule was shown a red card leaving his side a man down for the ten remaining minutes of normal time and the incredible five minutes Mr Berry saw fit to add. Horsham would have been ap-
