A wizarding world record Tanbridge students break a record with a bit of magic for World Book Day Benjamin Coren News Reporter

Tanbridge House is now officially a record-breaking school thanks to a joint event with Guinness World Records to celebrate World Book Day 2015. The event saw students reaching for their wands and hoping to conjure up a spell to help them achieve a Guinness World Records title for the largest gathering of people

dressed as Harry Potter! Over the past few weeks, students in Year 7 and Year 8 at Tanbridge have been putting their DIY skills to the test in order make the components for their costumes from pipe-cleaner glasses and paper wands and hats, in order to prepare for the event. On the day, the attempt was overseen by an official adjudicator from Guinness and a team of parent volunteers who helped supervise the mass assembly of more than 500 students. The final total achieved was 521 people, more than double the target of 250 participants set by Guinness and a fabulous result. The students were incredibly excited to all officially be world record holders. Olivia, in Year 7, said: “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity we wouldn’t otherwise get. It is awesome and so good for the school,”. Jacob, in Year 8, said: “My uncle has a world record so it is great to have another in the family!” The event was organised by Mr Baker and Miss Ely through the Tanbridge Learning Resources Centre. Mr Baker, LRC Manager, said “This was such a fantastic chance for the students to be part of a world record and a great opportunity for us to raise the profile of reading across the school. The hard work of all the students and staff involved certainly paid off and made for a really enjoyable event. What a brilliant experience!”.

Sarah in training on Mount Snowdon When you read stories about someone doing something active, dangerous or sweaty for charity, it’s usually about a person who doesn’t bat an eyelash at doing something active, challenging or sweaty. This is not one of those stories. In fact, the latest Horsham girl to take part in a fundraising hike is possibly the least likely candidate ever, which is why she deserves your donations. This week, Sarah Hood, a bornand-bred Horsham-ite will spend six days climbing almost 6,000 metres up Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world. You might hear of challenges like this every other day. You may even read about them weekly in The District Post. So what makes this particular expedition so special? Per-

From left: Ben, Dan, Sarah, Richard and Chris

haps it’s that Sarah hasn’t been camping since she did her Duke of Edinburgh Award in 1995 – and even that was compulsory! She’s not going alone, mind you. Sarah will be joined by four of her friends; Dan, Richard, Ben and Chris, who will no doubt carry her. Oops, we mean encourage her, all the way. So why is Sarah putting herself through the hardship of sleeping sans Siberian goose feathers and peeing in a pot for a few days? It’s actually for a very good cause, as she explained to us: “My friend Dan and his brother Richard have raised more than £20,000 for Motor Neurone Disease, an illness that their mum died from recently, which I thought was an inspiring achievement. “The MND Association had been

News Benjamin Coren newsdesk@thedistrictpost.co.uk

so amazing in caring for their mum and many others battling the disease. It takes time, money and lots of help from others to keep them funded. Dan came to me and asked for some new fundraising ideas and I told him he needed to do something drastic and different. “He asked me if I would get involved with him and the next thing I know I’m standing at the bottom of Mount Snowdon, walking poles at the ready, looking up and wondering how I got there. Little did I know, Kilimanjaro is six times as high. “My great Uncle also died from Motor Neurone Disease so I have personally seen the impact it has on people’s lives. It is a cruel disease that anyone can get. It’s also poorly funded and there is no cure. I would be so grateful to anyone who could donate whatever they can afford to

this really great charity.” Sarah and Co’s trip is entirely funded by themselves, with every penny of donations going to the MND Association. Together the team has already raised £11,000 for the charity. Sarah added: “I’m terrified. The effects of high altitude can be pretty bad and on the last night climbing in pitch black to the summit for seven hours will be tough. But we’ve trained hard and I think we are prepared! I know that I’m doing it for a good reason and I’m very grateful for all the donations I’ve received so far.” A six-day mountain climb? It’s worth a bob or two if you ask us. To make a donation to the Motor Neurone Disease Association via Sarah Hood’s Just Giving web page go to justgiving.com/Sarah-Hood5.

Do you recognise this man who may have been involved in a telephone cash scam in Horsham? Police have released an efit of a man they would like to speak to in connection with a telephone and courier scam where a 79-year-old man was conned out for £2,000. On Tuesday, February 24, at 2pm the victim received a phone call at his home in Tilletts Lane from a After returning from the bank, who would only give him £2,000, the money was collected by a suspect described as a mixed race man, in his 30s, 5' 2" and of medium build. He had dark messy facial hair and was wearing a light coloured matching tracksuit with his hood up. Detective Constable Phillip Peadon said: "The caller intimidated the victim by threatening police action scaring the victim into thinking he was doing the right thing by handing over to help police. We will never ask for your details over the phone and will not ask you to take out money. "If you recognise this man or saw something suspicious in this area at the time please get in contact. "If you have any suspicions about a phone call, please do not use the phone you have been called on to contact the police or your bank. caller claiming he was an undercover detective constable from London police and was calling because his card had been cloned. The caller spoke with a deep voice and a foreign accent and asked the victim to withdraw £6,000 from his bank account. He was told he would receive a £10,000 reward for helping police or face arrest and a prison sentence if he did not cooperate.

Piries Place car park in Horsham is to be upgraded with the new SmartPark parking system on Tuesday, March 17. The upgrade will mean visitors no longer have to purchase a ticket on arrival or limit how long they stay. SmartPark has already been installed in Swan Walk and the Forum car parks by Horsham District Council and is making parking in the town centre easier and more convenient. Parking costs have not been increased. SmartPark car parks record the numberplate of a car via a camera as it enters the car park. The driver simply parks and goes off on foot without needing to worry about collecting a ticket or paying attention to time limits. Before collecting their car they enter their vehicle’s registration number at one of the pay stations and the appropriate fee will be displayed. Cllr Roger Paterson, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, said: “The purpose of Horsham SmartPark is to make parking at Piries Place much easier and more relaxed. “The only thing you will need to do is remember your car number plate.” Horsham District Council will soon be launching an online SmartPark registration service, making payments even more convenient. This online payment system does not replace the pay machines in each car park, which will still be used. Register now for more information at www.horshamsmartpark.co.uk.

Southwater’s Dinosaur Island children’s Scents of nostalgia play area launch dates now confirmed around Horsham Nik butler @loudmouthman

Councillors Kate Rowbottom, Ian Howard, Claire Vickers and Jonathan Chowen are shown the latest progress on the Dinosaur Island site Construction works to develop the new Dinosaur Island children’s adventure play area at Southwater country park are now well under way. It is estimated that the play area will now be open for use by the end of May 2015 and an official launch opening is being planned for July 11 2015. The play park features several special effects such as an active volcano, red hot lava flows, tar quagmire, dinosaur swamp and

prehistoric jungle. Children of all ages and abilities will be able to cross dinosaur bones and deadly swampland, swing through the jungle, climb the volcano, zip wire across lizard infested ditches and traverse aerial walkways along sheer slopes to look out over the Country Park lake in this ambitious project.. Horsham District Council, working in conjunction with Southwater Parish Council and West Sussex County Council, are also looking to

improve car parking arrangements in and around the Country Park area. It is planned that parking improvements at Station Road and Worthing Road will be in place by the end of May 2015 to provide enhanced car parking capacity for the busy summer period. In the meantime, some access disruptions in the Park have unfortunately been necessary to complete building works, but it is aimed to re-open the temporarily closed paths for the Easter school holidays.

The whole of the former play area has now been closed off for safety reasons for the duration of the works, though the Country Park is open for business as usual. Further details on the play area are available to view in the Visitor Centre and Café at the Country Park which are open seven days a week. If you have any ideas on how the facilities at Southwater Country Park can be improved, please let us know at parks@horsham.gov.uk.

One impact of taking up running, other than the oft referred to harm to ones knees, is the growing awareness of the quality of Horshams air especially the smells and odours. Psychologically speaking, scents are a powerful memory trigger and in terms of positive memories within Horsham I can think of a number of nasal bound moments which are associated with pleasant memories in Horsham. The most common would surely be the smell of hops and malt from the Kings & Barnes brewery; the deep caramels and robust swells of the brewing process would invade the town from Denne hill to Parkway. Today when I get a brief whiff of similar smells from the various breweries that stretch out along our railway line I am cast back to those moments in Horsham. After this comes the nostalgia of the Global Coffee Company whose coffee roasting process would gently smoke and consistently creep along the Carfax and out across Horsham park. Deep and full bodied scents which would trigger the need to stop at the cafe and watch the world go by as beans would continue their heated suserration towards their inevitable enrichment. In the times I lived on Cambridge road the occasional baking smells of bread slowly encrusting in the ovens would trigger the need for a well thought out lunchtime with fresh loaves and a selection of cheeses from the much missed Cheese shop. All these moments in memories appear to be mere nasal nostalgia compared to the present. Today’s experiences are somewhat different for residents of Horsham as their auditory and olfactory experiences are bombarded with an almost endless hiss of car tyre on tarmac and the dust and diesel expulsions that encompass every pedestrian as they traverse the streets. Add to this the experience of the local landfill whose odious odours need only prevailing winds to amend their habits and many a home in the shadow of mount liberty (thank you John Steele for that label) experiences a world of smells which are more akin to living at the bottom of a kitchen bin. Of all the memories in Horsham that we can capture those created by activities in baking, roasting, and brewing, are like so many other past times lost in History; soon to be forgotten treasures which defined a community. These then are the moments for which we can make the least scents.

Bluebells are just around the corner

under-storey plants. Basically they come into leaf and flower long before the trees above them. Thus they gain an early advantage, getting the light, feeding, breeding and seeding, all before the green canopy starves the woodland floor of light. One of the best displays of early woodland flowers I have ever seen was in Norfolk at a house next to the famous Adrian Bloom’s garden at Bressingham. Sadly I was too in awe to take photos, so you'll have to imagine the yellows and shocking pinks. That said, we are also not far from the bluebells. A beautiful plant, we are exceptionally lucky to have several decent bluebell woods locally.

Most notably at Warnham Manor and also at Slinfold although I have no doubt we all know a 'secret' place where the bluebells are just for those who know. Sadly our native bluebells are under threat. An invasive species has been introduced via garden centres. Larger, brighter but less characterful, the Spanish bluebell is cross breeding at a rapid rate - making our plant rarer by the year. Basically, if you want bluebells in your garden, please make sure you buy Hyancinthoides non-scripta and not Hyacinthoides hispanica. If you are not sure go to http://www.plantlife. org.uk/about_us/faq/bluebells/. You will be saving a precious native from extinction.

I love this time of year. After-all it’s the Celtic mid-Spring and all is well! (If this is March coming in like a lion, I love the lamb already). The crocus and snowdrops have

been glorious. The beautiful yellow of the lesser celandine is just appearing along with the wood anemone (Anemone nemorosa), to replace the 'Winter' aconites (Eranthus hyemalis) and cyclamen – both of which you can sow seed now for the future. Of course the white stars of wild garlic and the delicate bells of Lily of the Valley are yet to come. One thing many people don't realise is, you don't have to wait un-

til later in the year to plant these wonderful perennials. With careful research, you can buy all these plants 'in the green' from specialist nurseries. They also have the ability to ‘naturalise’ and spread, so a few plants will become many in time. The advantage of course is, you get to see that the plants are viable before they disappear for the next 8 months. Remember, all these plants are

Horsham children cele Farlington students celebrate World Book Day Farlington Prep School is supporting the charity Big Brother Mouse as it celebrates World Book Day, with each girl paying a pound to wear a onesie or dress as her favourite book character for the day. Big Brother Mouse is an organisation set up in Laos to help get books into schools. It is trying to change Laos from a country where traditionally “people don’t read” into a country which loves books. It has translated many well-loved children’s

books, including Beatrix Potter stories, into the Loa language and then arranges book parties and swaps in schools so that each child has their own book to read. Books are taken by canoe and elephant to the more remote villages in the country where there is a feeling of celebration when it is announced: “the books are here!” Girls in Year 6 have been shown pictures of Loa classrooms, so they can see what they look like without books. “There would be no path of

knowledge to follow and no ambitions to dream of,“ said Imogen Rimer. “A classroom without books is like a person without arms,” remarked Issy Hayes. Sarah Welsh, Prep 6W’s teacher, said: “I was very inspired by the work Big Brother Mouse does in Laos when I visited recently. It was strange to see classrooms without books. All the girls and l agreed that a life without books would be miserable, so we are very happy to support this charity.”

Healthy walks programme receives national accreditation from Walking for Health

H

orsham District Council’s guided Healthy Walks programme has been awarded a national accreditation from Walking for Health which is run by The Ramblers – a UK non- profit making organisation which aims to promote the positive impact walking can have on people’s lives. The guided Healthy Walks programme was initiated by the council in 2000 and facilitates 10 to 15 walks every week across Horsham district which are led by a group of 50 trained volunteer walk leaders. The walks are all graded as either Health Walks – aimed at beginners and those who may have long term health conditions or Leisure Walks – aimed at those who have progressed from Health Walks and would like an extra challenge. Commenting on the accreditation, cabinet member for a healthier and safer district, Councillor Sue Rogers said: “Walking is such a simple and effective way to improve people’s health. Having gained this official recognition our

programme will now benefit from the backing of a strong national brand, providing free training, help with marketing and advice on funding going forward. Above all, it promotes our walks to a wider audience so that more of our residents can enjoy both the health benefits and more of our lovely countryside.” Walking for Health which is run by The Ramblers, is England’s largest network of health walk schemes, helping people across the country lead more active lifestyles. The network has been operating with great success for over 12 years, improving the mental and physical wellbeing of thousands of people. Every scheme across England are supported by a national team providing free promotion, advice and tools to help raise awareness of Walking for Health amongst policy-makers, funders and partners, as well as potential walkers. All the walks are free to join. Full details of the quarterly walks programme can be found at www. horshamhealthwalks.co.uk.

On the evening of Tuesday, March 2, the Sussex University Physics and Astronomy Department Outreach Team came to Farlington School to assist in the study of the observable universe. High-powered binoculars and a reflecting telescope were set up on the South Lawn and girls ranging from Years 8 to 11 were encouraged to step up and take advantage of the opportunity to have a detailed look at several objects in the night sky. As daylight started to fade, their attention was first turned to the Moon. The craters on the surface were clearly visible and the girls even managed to take some fantastic photographs through the

telescope. Throughout the evening, they saw three planets: Venus, Mars and Jupiter, along with Jupiter’s four largest moons. Other objects included the Pleiades star cluster and the Orion Nebula, a region where a star formation is taking place. Chris Snewin, Head of Chemistry, who organised the evening, said, “The girls asked some excellent questions of the Sussex University team about the things they could see – I think there are some budding astronomers at Farlington!” Special thanks goes to the Sussex University Physics and Astronomy Department Outreach Team who made the evening possible.

District Rotarians climb the O2 Dome to mark final push against Polio To celebrate Rotary’s continued efforts to put an end to polio, Storrington and Pulborough District Rotarians Brian Parfitt and Tony Vaughan joined 150 other members of Rotary clubs across Great Britain and Ireland to climb the O2 Dome in London and raise the ‘End Polio Now’ flag high above the capital’s skyline. T a k i n g place on February 23, the climb also marked Rotary’s 110th birthday and was organised in order to raise funds for the global polio campaign, which Rotary GBI has raised a massive £21million for so far. Tony Vaughan, who took part in the climb, stated: “It wasn’t the best of weather days which made the climb all the more testing, but it was all in a great cause.” Since the launch of ‘End Polio Now’ in 1985, the amount of en-

demic countries has decreased from 125 to just three: Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. In the past 12 months, Nigeria has also seen no recorded cases since July, sparking hope that it too will be declared Polio free in the near future. Eve Conway, Vice President Elect of Rotary GBI, explained: “The walk is a great way to celebrate the incredible efforts of Rotarians in Great Britain and Ireland, but also across the globe, to try and eradicate polio for good. With only three affected countries left, one of which has seen no new cases since July, our dream of a polio free world is now within our grasp.” Also benefitting from sponsorship raised will be the new ‘Walk For Water’ initiative, which aims to provide those in less developed countries with barrels to help them transport water more easily.

Admiral Nurses appointed in Horsham and Mid Sussex

NHS Horsham and Mid Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), working in partnership with Dementia UK, NHS Crawley CCG, Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and West Sussex County Council, have announced the appointment of four specialist Admiral Nurses to the area. The new team of four Admiral Nurses will cover the whole of the north of West Sussex, including Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex. Employed by the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and supported via the Dementia Challenge Fund, the Admiral Nurses have been commissioned for three years to

bring more support to those living with dementia in Horsham and Mid Sussex. The Admiral Nursing service has been established in response to direct patient feedback and the need to improve the quality of care for those living with dementia in the area. With their unique clinical and social skills, the Admiral Nurses will work in an integrated manner with other health and social care providers in the area, including existing voluntary and community organisations, to ensure a unified service. Admiral Nurse Nichola Cox said: “I grew up and trained in the local area and it feels important to be returning

to this patch and giving something back. The most important thing to me is having time to spend with families and offering comprehensive care.” Fellow Nurse Sarah Hiscocks added: “As a team we come with a wide and varied experience. We will be helping to create a seamless support network between all the other services out there and changing dementia experiences positively.” By responding to the needs of the whole family living with dementia, the Admiral Nurses will help to prevent crises and stop unnecessary admissions to care homes and hospitals.

A sparkling evening with Sakakini Jewellers and Denbies Wine Estate On April 16, 2015, Sakakini Jewellers will be joining forces with Denbies Wine Estate at their vineyard in Dorking, to bring you a unique evening of diamonds and sparkling wine tasting, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Surrey Hills. The “Call My Sparkling Wine Bluff” event is a rare opportunity to enjoy some of Denbies award winning sparkling wines and a canapé reception combined with a chance to hear a fascinating presentation into the intriguing world of diamonds, by local diamond expert and jeweller Dominic Sakakini. With over 12 years’ experience as a diamond trader, retail jeweller and manufacturer of bespoke jewellery, Dominic will be sharing his knowledge about the history of diamonds, how they were formed and how to choose a diamond with an eye firmly on cut, clarity, colour and carat. And with Dominic’s colourful personality and his selection of spectacular gems, guests can expect to be educated, en-

tertained and enthralled. In describing the idea behind the event, Dominic explained: “There is something sublime about the combination of diamonds and sparkling wine, particularly in the salubrious surroundings of Denbies Estate. Diamonds have a fascinating history and with the extremely buoyant state of the diamond market at the moment, diamonds have a very exciting future ahead. I’m really looking forward to this event where I’ll be sharing my insider knowledge as well as giving details of my prestigious Diamond Club, which offers a really fantastic and unique opportunity to buy diamonds at wholesale prices.” The event is from 6.30 – 8.30 pm and costs just £19.95. The Capitol Theatre in Horsham is delighted to announce a world premiere of two new Horrible Histories Shows, with several performances over the Easter weekend, Thursday, April 2 to Sunday, April 5. Thousands of years after the Ruthless Romans, Savage Saxons & Vicious Vikings stormed ashore on the coast of Britain and the Gruesome Greeks competed in the first ever Olympic Games, you can relive those horribly exciting times by bringing your family to see Birmingham Stage Company’s brand new Horrible Histories stage shows, Incredible Invaders and Groovy Greeks. Neal Foster, Writer and Director, stated: “I had a hugely exciting time bringing the Groovy Greeks to life in Horrible Histories style and loved shining the spotlight on Celtic, Roman, Saxon and Viking life in Incredible Invaders. “Both shows feature special amazing 3D effects that provide a spectac-

ular way for both children and adults to enter these extraordinary historical periods.” Incredible Invaders and Groovy Greeks look like being BSC’s best Horrible Histories theatre shows yet, designed to both entertain and educate their audiences from ages five to 105. Come and goggle at the goings on of those Groovy Greeks and let the Incredible Invaders ignite your imaginations to learn more about our island’s early history. So don’t delay, book your tickets today! There will also be a half-hour Q&A session after the 1:30 performance of Incredible Invaders on Thursday, April 2, so be sure to stick around. Tickets cost £14 for adults and £12 for children, with £9.50 tickets available for school visits. To book tickets or for more information, please contact The Capitol by phone on 01403 750220 or visit their website, www.thecapitolhorsham.com

Our mothers helped us grow to what we are today and fed us with food and love. So, this Mothers Day, say a big thanks with a small return of the favour and spoil her with some amazing food and drink. Horsham has become the foodie hub of Sussex and it’s not hard to source some really special treats including local artisan chocolate, freshly roasted coffee, stunning wines and superb cheeses from both England and the rest of Europe. Good food and drink is always a winner when it comes to gifts. From cooking up a delightful breakfast using fresh ingredients through to a hamper bursting with treats to eat and drink. And, when it comes to eating out, food will always bring people together in a very special way. Far from being just fuel, amazing food is sure to put a smile on any Mum’s face. CAKE - the GBBO with the delectable Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood has sparked a major baking revival but, let’s face it, we don’t always want to do it ourselves. Epicurean picks: Rachel’s Kitchen in Carfax for cupcakes, Just Brownies with Mr Bake on Carfax Market and for sublime fruit cake try Cake Angel stocked at good local food shops. CHEESE - the art of cheese making has enjoyed a big renaissance in recent years. Whilst the Cheese Shop shut years ago, there is now plenty of cheese available again in the town centre. Epicurean picks: Horsham Cheese Stall and Crates Local on the Carfax focus on Sussex cheeses whilst French cheese can be bought from Marion de Montford in East Street and for Italian, visit Horsham Enoteca and Carmela’s Deli. CHOCOLATE - whilst the big British brands may have sold out to the Yanks, there is a growing army of local choccy artisans creating very special chocolate. Epicurean picks: Cocoa Loco now has a shop in Piries alley as does Wimblehurst Chocolates in East

Street. Other chocolatiers are represented at specialist food shops such as award winning William Curley and Amelia Rope. FOODIE EXPERIENCE - we are lucky to be awash with a whole host of eating and drinking establishments to suit almost anyone. Apart from the high street big boys, there are some very special independents offering great food and foodie events. Epicurean picks: afternoon tea at Artisan in Market Square, 1898 in East Street or Pretty Things in Park Place. For Michelin star eating - a meal at Tristan’s or South Lodge could be remembered for a lifetime or, for something very different, tasting events are often hosted by Crates Local, Horsham Enoteca, the Black Jug and many of the vineyards so prevalent. BLENDED TEAS & COFFEE - we all appreciate a cuppa in bed and it’s easy to make it special. Forget just old builders tea, go for specially blended white tea or even locally roasted coffee, freshly ground to order. Epicurean picks: Crates Local for specially blended teas teas and freshly roasted coffee by Horsham Coffee Roaster. The Carfax Market also hosts CoffeECO every Thursday and Saturday for freshly roasted fair trade coffee beans. TIPPLES - don’t go for just a bottle of plonk or that Irish Cream that will remain at the back of the cupboard gathering dust as there is so much more! The growing number of vines growing on our gentle hills in a perfect climate is helping English wine become world renowned. It is also very easy to get your hands on specially selected European wines that will exceed what you can pick up from the supermarket shelves. Epicurean picks: for English red, white and bubbly try Crates Local who also stock the very special Brighton Gin. Italian wine is available on tap from Horsham Enoteca and a good selection also from Carmela’s Deli. Not all beer lovers are men and for the growing interest from women, Beer Essentials in East Street is, well, essential. Vote for Horsham’s best cup of coffee

The coveted bean trophy The District Post is organising the Caffe Italia competition this year as part of the Horsham Piazza Italia fortnight in the lead up to the event this Easter. The competition will take place from Friday, March 13, to April 10, and all local businesses serving coffee are invited to participate. Coffee is an essential part of Italian culture, and the Caffe Italia competition is searching for the perfect coffee experience. product quality as well as customer service. All businesses who serve coffee are encouraged to participate in Caffe Italia in the lead up to the Piazza Italia weekend. Customers at various coffee outlets will vote on a scale of 0-5 for participating businesses, either online or on paper, based on flavour, presentation and customer service. Any business serving coffee can take part, be it an independent cafe, a coffee chain, or simply a business serving coffee as part of another

Will your vote effect your move? Neil Moore - Guy Leonard & Co. Neil Moore, MD of Guy Leonard & Co Estate Agents, takes a very personal view on moving home in this time of political and economic uncertainty. Which way will you vote? Will you vote to move home before or after the election? All decisions have consequences. And all big decisions have big consequences. Buying and selling property is certainly a big decision. Answers to questions like this are best made on the basis of what you know. So what do we know? We know that Britain is a nation of homeowners, that we have the lowest interest rates ever and lenders have entered a mortgage rate war, bringing some incredible deals to the market. We know that as salaries rise so does the affordability to move home and that it is now often cheaper to buy a property than to rent one. We know that we are more optimistic about the

economic future - and therefore our own financial futures - than we have been since 2008. Finally we know that property stock levels are the lowest for many years and while that should put upward pressure on prices it hasn’t because of what we don’t know. We don’t know who will be in 10 Downing Street after May 7th. So we don’t know what sort of country we will be living in following the election. We don’t know how far the current improvement in the economy will take us, nor the effect that the three headed monster crisis of Euro Zone, the Ukraine and the Middle East will have over time. Nor do we know how much a mansion tax would affect the UK property market. It would also be helpful if we knew how long our current low interest rates will prevail. But we don’t. One thing estate agents have always known is that many fewer people would move if residential prop-

erties were simply viewed as commodities. But residential properties are not commodities they are homes. And despite what is going on in the world, at the heart of our lives and our families are our homes. They are not a speculation they are a human necessity. If your voting intention to move is clouded by indecision you are not alone. But in my view one thing is certain; home trumps the UK economy, current affairs, ‘dodgy’ politicians, terrorists, tax evaders, devolution and the oil industry. Home is where the heart is and if this is the right time to find a new home then now is the right time to move – despite what is going on in the rest of the world or who might be grinning broadly at us from the steps of Number 10 on May 8, 2015.

Four bedroom village home for sale

Chilmans, Slaugham Price £425,000 Located in the picturesque village of Slaugham is this charming three/four bedroom semidetached cottage. Offered to the market for the first time in 56 years. This property has been lovingly lived in and enjoyed but is in need of modernisation throughout, although some steps including a new oil fired boiler and some new windows have been fitted. Already benefiting from a loft conversion this property lends itself to further extension (STPP) to create a stunning family home. The location and setting is a real delight and a viewing is highly recommended. The property is entered via a hallway leading to the lounge which boasts a unique open fire and a large front window, making it a wonderful welcoming space. The central fire place is a great focal point and is ideal for curling up in front of on a cold winters evening. The open planned kitchen/ diner flows nicely on from here and was hand built by the previous owners, benefitting from some unique touches. The kitchen/diner has plenty of space for a good size table and there is ample cupboard space including a large walk in larder. To the rear of the house is a small double story extension which houses a large downstairs cloakroom that doubles up as a utility room and stores the boiler. There is also a handy space by the back door for coats and shoes etc. On the first floor you have the family bathroom and although dated, it is a great size and has plenty of potential. The three main bedrooms in the property are all doubles and any one of them could described as the master bedroom. The study/bedroom four could be used as a respectable size single bedroom if required. On the first floor bedroom one benefits from the rear extension and has plenty of space for a large bed, wardrobes and dressers. The extension could be utilised by having a walk in wardrobe or be converted to an en-suite. Bedroom two already has built in cupboards and a dresser cleverly utilising the available space, leaving ample area for a double bed. The third bedroom is located on the second floor and accessed by a bespoke staircase. This room was converted in circa 1970 and offers a generous amount of floor space. It has a delightful widow seat with clever storage space below and overlooks the fields and woodland to the rear of the property. There is also access to the small loft space for storage and the water tank. This room also has built in wardrobes and dressing table. Call Mayhew Estates today for an appointment on our open day March 14, 9.30am. 01403 276777

Rampant Horsham hit lowly Barnes for six Photos by Nick Evans

hockey

Martin Read – Sports Reporter

Saturday March 7 - South League Premier Division 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 6 - 0 Barnes Without their three leading scorers - Matt Hough, Jack Dean and Cirdec Atkinson (37 goals between them this season) - rampant Horsham maintained their push for promotion with a merciless 6-0 thrashing of lowly Barnes. Mark Ansell came across from outside to open the scoring before John Burroughs tapped in from short range and promptly roofed another following pressure from a short corner. Then Barnes conceded their hundredth goal of the season when player coach Dominick Male reverse sticked another before Dom Cohen rounded off a long Burroughs run with Horsham’s fifth goal, rendering them invincible at the break, courtesy of pinpoint passing and a concentrated team effort. Matt Hough, out for the season with a broken thumb, told the

John Burroughs (no. 10) scoring from a tight angle District Post: “I played for Barnes when I moved to London two years ago – they were strong then but there is only one player left from that team.” John Burroughs completed an excellent hat trick early in the second half with his fifth goal in two weeks – again from a short corner. A rare Barnes attack subsequently drew a

great save from Horsham’s semiredundant keeper Neil Burlinson but their dominance was never questioned, epitomised when Noah Chinn just hit the crossbar. Team Manager Al Campbell said: “They gave us a lot of space in the first half and we scored for fun - it was great to see our short corner routine working so well. We could

Mark Ansell opened the scoring against Barnes have scored more after the interval but it was a clinical win by our weakened side.” Henley head the table by two points despite suffering their first reverse of the season – unexpectedly walloped 6-0 at runners up Banbury. With the top two teams securing promotion Horsham stay third on 42 but with a game in

Boro’s woes continue Saturday March 7 - London 3 South East League

Horsham Ladies 1st XI 0 - 1 Harleston Magpies

Uckfield 14 - 3 Pulborough

Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In urgent need of a win to stave off relegation Horsham conceded an early goal but then held their thirdplaced East Anglian opponents at bay and were unlucky not to share the points. Before the match recently appointed Horsham captain Gill Adams said: “Magpies always travel to us strong and determined but no matter what they throw at us we will come back at them harder than ever.” Horsham, as good as their word, are now coached by England’s Dan Shingles and Marc Hardy, and look to have a more combative edge. Had they been able to convert some of their short corner opportunities the result could well have been different. Chairman Nick Evans told us: “Once Horsham got into their stride Magpies never looked like scoring again. This was a very positive Horsham performance and if they play like that in their remaining matches then they’ve got more than half a chance of surviving in this league.” With just two games to play Horsham remains bottom with ten points, but just two behind Bedford, who lost to eighth placed Ipswich. Tomorrow (Saturday 14) Horsham visit St Albans (fifth), to whom they lost by the narrowest of margins in November, St Albans were beaten last week. With Horsham’s fellow strugglers Bedford having a tough trip to second in the table Sevenoaks, there is still all to play for.

hand. Tomorrow (Saturday 14) they travel to ninth-placed Eastbourne, whom they beat at home in November. Eastbourne drew with Marlow last week. The outcome of Horsham’s last home game – against Banbury – looks likely to have a critical bearing on the destiny of the league.

Pulborough’s mystifying away record was maintained when they lost to Uckfield after beating them at home earlier in the season. Frazer Oliphant-Hope kicked a penalty in the first half but the hosts responded with an unconverted try and a penalty of their own to lead 8-3 at the break. Two second half Uckfield penalties gave them the game at 14-3, two Boro kicks going begging. Winning five times at home Boro has just one away victory from nine starts. Team Manager Roger Hunt said: “Injuries and other absences forced us to shuffle our line up but Uckfield didn’t win it – we lost it! We had three or four scoring opportunities but wasted them. They’ve got a big old pack and we gave them a soft try, just rumbling in from a line out. A week’s break enables Boro – ninth on 29 points – to regroup before returning to action on Saturday, March 21, with their final home game against eleventh-placed Hastings & Bexhilll, whom they beat comprehensively before Christmas. Hastings were trounced 68-10 by current runners up Dartfordians last week. Boro’s last two matches are both away – looking to avenge December’s heavy defeat against Dartfordians, then in the final weekend of the season (April 11) a visit to Kent to take on Park House, tenth with 21 points, against whom they won easily in the opening match of the campaign

Horsham nearly champions after a Gibbs hat-trick Saturday March 7 - London 3 South East League Gillingham Anchorians 24 51 Horsham Rugby Dave Smith - Sports Editor

Horsham travelled to Gillingham looking for a five point win that would give them the opportunity to wrap up the league title at home against Old Dunstonians on March 21. The Green and Whites more than did that after running in nine tries to come away with a huge 51 – 24 victory and virtually ensure that this dominant season for the team will end with them as champions. The only thing to sour the day was skipper Paul Talbot suffered a broken leg that could put him out of the Sussex Cup Final on May 9. Both sides started slowly but after a tentative first ten minutes Horsham took a hold of the game applying pace and power that Anchorians had no answer to. Jamie Gibbs opened the scoring on fourteen minutes by finishing off a fine flowing move but the resulting conversion was missed as was five more throughout the match mostly due to the strong swirling wind.

Then three minutes later and against the run of play a defensive lapse let Gillingham level the scores, again missing the conversion. Horsham resumed normality ten minutes later when Johnny Whiting touched down for another unconverted try leaving the score 5-10 with thirty minutes played. On thirty five minutes Paul Talbot suffered his injury but the team did not allow this to disrupt the performance and Jamie Gibbs got his second try to make the score at half time 5 – 15. The Green and Whites came out of the blocks in a determined mood in the second half and totally dominated for the first fifteen minutes that saw Horsham run in five tries. Jamie Gibbs continued his fine first half form to score his hat trick and seventeen year old Declan Nwachuku, scored the first of his brace. Flanker Scott Price, winger James Whiting and scrum half Ben Rush also added to the score line with Tom Johnson converting two of the five tries leaving the score 5 – 44 with 60 minutes played. With the bonus point secured Horsham made a number of personnel changes which led to a slight breakdown in the flowing rugby that they had displayed for the first hour allowing Gillingham to score a

converted try to reduce the deficit to 12 – 44. Horsham’s final try came on seventy minutes and was scored by Declan Nwachukwu who used pace and power to get through several half tackles and outpace the defence to score. The try was successfully converted by Tom Johnson to make it 12 – 51. In the final incident packed ten minutes Horsham’s hooker Iain Fisher was harshly sin binned, they lost another player leaving them with thirteen on the field in which time Anchorians scored two tries one of which was converted to leave the final score 24 - 51. Amid so many fine performances Ben Rush, who will return home to New Zealand at the end of the season, was deservedly given the man of the match award. With a week off this Saturday (March 14) the Green and Whites will be left champing at the bit to retake to the field at home to Old Dunstonians on March 21, when hopefully eighty minutes later they will be crowned league champions. Horsham team: Bell (Downey 60) Whiting J, Gibbs, Ordidge, Nwachukwu, Johnson, Rush (Mills 60), Talbot (Cass 35), Fisher, Barber, Grover, Green, Price, Thompson, Whiting J.

Horsham and Pulborough Seven straight wins for the Hawks play out a final thriller Horsham Hawks U12 78 – 56 Crawley Cagers U12

Lewis Wilson scoring for Horsham U16

Youth Rugby Dave Smith - Sports Editor The two most improved teams in the league this season, local rivals Pulborough and Horsham, met last weekend for what was their last game of the season. Pulborough won a hard fought contest 10-12 to finish third in the Under 16 Div 1 league table, Horsham finished a place behind them in fourth. Pulborough broke the deadlock on 20 minutes through Jacob Temple who run in under the posts for the games first try which was converted by George Lee to give the visitors a 0-7 lead. Horsham hit back quickly and reduced the deficit to 5-7 with a Jordan Bell unconverted try. Pulborough then had a

good finish to the half having most of the ball which culminated in Ciaran Keating going over for Pulborough’s second try. The conversion was missed but Pulborough took the 5-12 lead into half time. Horsham came out stronger in the second half and Lewis Wilson put Horsham right back in the match with a well taken try in the corner that was not converted. The tense last ten minutes saw the vocal crowd at their noisiest but despite opportunities for both sides there was no further score and the match finished as a close and exciting 10 – 12 Pulborough victory. Both teams have made big improvements this season and both can feel very pleased with their performances throughout the year.

Hawks beat Crawley to record seventh straight win

Youth Basketball Dave Smith - Sports Editor The Hawks started the game at a high tempo with pressure defence from Antonio Lozzi and accurate finishing from Josh Lea-Clayton giving Horsham an early 16-4 advantage. A big and determined Crawley team responded with some strong rebounding to kick start their offence but were unable to stop a Meghan Stevens jump shot ending the first quarter with the Hawks up 20-9. Charlotte Willcox and Josh Tavolieri led the Hawks on an 8-0 run to start the second period as the Hawks continued increase their lead. Supported by quick and confident play from Miguel Venturini, Amy Willcox and Fin Bennett Horsham continued to dominate the quarter before a resilient Cagers team again battled back with an 8-0 run of their own narrowing the half time score to 38-

26. An impressive third quarter from a relentless Hawks squad eventually started to take a toll on Crawley as Horsham began winning the war of attrition for rebounds with Tavolieri, Harry Rose and Jamie Coulson turning Crawley misses into Horsham scores extending the lead to 60-39. The fourth quarter was a much more even contest with James Lowe opening his scoring account and

Anaya Wakefield confidently making a shot from the wing as time expired to make it 78-56 and securing a seventh straight win for the Hawks. Josh Lea-Clayton – 19, Josh Tavolieri - 19, Charlotte Willcox - 10, Miguel Venturini - 8, Harry Rose - 6, Meghan Stevens – 4, Antonio Lozzi 2, Amy Willcox - 2, Fin Bennett - 2, Jamie Coulson - 2, Anaya Wakefield - 2, James Lowe – 2

Early Gedling strike sinks the Dockers Saturday March 7 - Sussex County League Div 1 Horsham YMCA 1 - 0 Newhaven Football Tom Norris - Football Reporter A solitary Luke Gedling strike helped Horsham YMCA complete the league double over fifth-placed Newhaven and close the gap on the Dockers in the race for a top six finish. The midfielder’s exquisite volley after just three minutes was all that separated the two sides during a scrappy and often fragmented affair where clear cut chances were at a premium. Buckland’s side remain in seventh spot in the Division 1 table, eight points behind Newhaven and three points behind local rivals Loxwood, but the YM boss still believes that they will still record a top six finish. “It was a pretty scrappy old game that went stop, start, stop, start, but we stressed to the players after recent weeks that what we needed today was discipline. “We needed to be disciplined in our shape all over the pitch, and I think

we completely shut them out of the game. But we weren’t all that graceful going forwards as a result of trying to tighten up. After last week’s shambles I thought that we just needed to shut the back door. And it was a fabulous goal worthy of winning any game that made it 1-0. I said that we’d finish in the top six and I still feel that we will.” Both sides struggled to create opportunities, and the fragmented nature of the first period continued as the second half wore on, not least thanks to some contentious officiating decisions, heated exchanges and several players’ names entering the referee’s notebook. Buckland added: “Our opportunities in the second half were certainly at a premium and we became a bit predictable. I think we got the balance about right overall. And they [Newhaven] are decent. They’re a big, physical side and I’m not surprised that they are where they are in the table.” YM Team: Lockwood, Carden, Dugdale, Doherty, O’Carroll, Hibbert, Gedling, D. Sullivan, J. Brown (T. Smith 80), D. Brown (Evans 76), N. Sullivan (Schaaf 80) Unused Subs: Fox, Gathern.

Horsham U15's have won their division Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Roffey Youth FC 3 - 0 Burgess Hill & Hurst Albion Youth On a difficult pitch Roffey won both matches in this double header 3-0 to grab maximum points against a stubborn Burgess Hill team who made it difficult for Roffey in both matches. Roffey started strongly in the first match, with Liam Ruz scoring in the opening five minutes. Burgess Hill worked their way back into the match, but it was Roffey who scored next, Callum Nash converting a free kick when the Hill keeper picked up a back pass. Roffey secured all three points when Dan Meisinger nodded home from a free kick in the second half. The second match, although a little scrappier, ended with the same 3 - 0 score line, this time the goals came from Ed Kear, Callum Nash and Liam Ruz. Ashurstwood U15 1 – 2 Roffey Robins Athletic U15 Robins Athletic earned their fourth league win of the season in a hard fought contest away to Ashurstwood. Robins scored first when Jack Roe beat the Ashurstwood keeper with a looping header but Matthew Rogers equalised for the home side just before half time after being left un-marked at a corner.

The second half produced plenty of end-to-end action with both teams creating scoring opportunities. The match was finally settled when Alex Barker’s shot from the edge of the box found the bottom right corner. Maidenbower Colts U15 0 - 1 Horsham U15 With two matches still to play Horsham’s U15 team have secured the Sussex Sunday Youth League Division three title and in doing so maintained their 100% record for the season. In a scrappy match Horsham sealed victory with a goal on 22 minutes from Harvey McLeod whose well placed glancing header beat the Colts keeper. Defender Marcus Laker was Horsham’s man of the match. In other Horsham FC junior games Horsham U16 lost 2-1, the U14 team won 3-0 and the U10 side lost 1-0 in match one and won 3-0 in match two. Horsham Sparrows Under 12 – A close game against strong visitors from Perrywood saw the Sparrows team end their cup run with a 2-1 defeat. Under 14 – 10 man Sparrows lost at home to table topping Lingfield. Despite a great team performance capped by man of the match keeper Tim W, the team lost out to strong opposition. Under 15 – The team hosted top of the table Heron Olympic and in a game

where there were plenty of chances for both teams, eventually lost out to their visitors. Under 13 Girls – The girls travelled to Broad Oak boosted by the return of Emily, Olivia and Alice and with Ella T making her debut. The team started well and Alice scored the first goal of the game after ten minutes from a great through ball from Emily. The game then turned into an end to end affair and Broad Oak scored an equaliser before taking the lead shortly before half-time. The second half started with chances for Melissa and Esther before the Emily and Alice combination delivered a second goal for Alice. Both teams then pushed for a winner and Sparrows were unlucky to concede with a player down injured. Ella S in goal was excellent along with Ellen in defence and Melissa in midfield but girl of the game was Alice with her 6th and 7th goals of the season. Under 14 Girls – After a long break without games the team hosted Crawley in the cup. A close game saw Sparrows run out 3-1 winners and progress through to the next round. Under 18 Girls – The team travelled to Kempton for a double header and after a close game in which Georgina score a great header, the team narrowly lost 2-1. The second game saw the girls share the points as the game ended goal less.

St Francis Rangers 2 - 3 Broadbridge Heath Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor

Having lost the previous two encounters against St Francis this season and with manager Steve Painter forced to change his centre back pairing for the fourth game running the task facing Heath before kickoff looked a difficult one. But again Heath put in a determined performance that kept their very decent season going. St Francis had the best of the opening quarter of an hour, forcing Heath to defend stoutly but without really troubling Heath keeper Chester. Then on twenty minutes, and against the run of play, Heath gained the advantage. Piers McDermott played a long free kick deep into the St Francis penalty area that caused chaos among defenders and a scramble ensued. The ball broke loose to Heath striker Tiago Andrade who hammered a left foot shot through the crowded penalty area into the net. Buoyed by the goal Heath piled forward and minutes later got further reward by grabbing a second.

Ollie Moore played the ball over a defender who tried in vain to head it back to his keeper but Andrade read the play and nipped in to score his and his team’s second of the match. But then like Heath before them St Francis got a goal against the run of play when Josh Bryant converted a corner to reduce the deficit and take the teams in at the break with Heath holding a 2-1 lead. Five minutes into the second half Jamal Sultan got behind the fullback and picked out Ollie Moore who scored his 20th goal of the season from twelve yards to give Heath back the two goal buffer. St Francis were not done though and midway through the half Dan Lawrence glanced a header wide of the Chester to bring the difference back to one goal. Despite attempts from both sides that could and probably should have led to further goals 2-3 was how it remained and Heath came away from Haywards Heath with three more points to take them to eighth in the table. In what will be a tough game Heath host third placed Pagham on Saturday (March 14). Heath team: Chester, Sultan, Robinson, Waddingham, Flack, Mobsby, Moore, McDermott (Legrange 75), Andrade, Holmes, Greig.

Saturday March 7 - Ryman League Division One South Hythe Town 4 - 0 Horsham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor

Hythe striker Shawn Welford scoring from a corner

Horsham keeper Williams was left exposed again

Following last week’s defeat at Hythe’s near neighbours Folkestone the Hornets needed to come away from the Kent coast with something, if not a point then a decent performance that would give confidence a boost for the games to come. In the end it was another heavy defeat and the prospects of Horsham playing Ryman League football next season get slimmer by the week. Yes, Lewis Hamilton was harshly shown a red card in the second half after making what looked a well timed tackle but no wins in the last eight, thirteen goals conceded in the last three and only one goal scored from open play in the last four does not inspire the belief that survival is possible. Perhaps things may have been different if when straight from the kick off a swift attack and shot from Trevor McCreadie had not been well saved by Hythe keeper Hayward. However this turned out to be one of the very few efforts on goal that Horsham managed in the remaining ninety minutes with most of the attacking play coming from the hosts.

The Hornets defence had two early scares; a totally unmarked Bradley Jordan should have scored for Hythe but headed over when it would have been easier to hit the net. Then a run and shot from Town’s Shaun Welford beat Williams in the Horsham goal but hit the underside of the bar from where the loose ball was cleared for a corner. The relief was short lived for the jittery Horsham defence as from the resulting corner kick more poor marking left Craig Thompson time and space to nod home and give his side the lead. The rest of the half saw all the threat coming from the home side, although the game itself lacked in excitement and skilful football. Again Horsham were fortunate when another effort hit the Horsham goal frame with Williams beaten but it was McCreadie again who against the run of play could have put his side in level at the break but his close range header went straight to Hythe keeper Hayward. Horsham were somewhat fortunate to go in just 1-0 down at the break but while the score remained that way there was always hope of taking some points back down the M20. But instead of coming out in the second half and going at Hythe the Hornets were put on the back foot and forced to defend the flows of Town attacks, much the same as the first forty five minutes. Horsham held out however right up to the hour mark when an awful decision by referee Daniel Bonneywell saw Lewis Hamilton sent off

for what the ref deemed to be a foul and then he compounded the decision by judging Hamilton to be the last man resulting in a red card. With Horsham a man short Hythe town now took control not only of the play but also of the score line. On seventy-one minutes the Horsham defence were again caught out when they left Welford unmarked to head home and double his team’s lead. Williams produced some heroics to keep out the now constant stream of efforts on his goal but the Horsham keeper could only parry a Welford shot and the unmarked Bewick had the simple task of tapping in goal number three. In the last minute of added time Hythe got a fourth when Harvey’s shot was saved by Williams but again Horsham was slow to react and the rebound was put away by Town’s Jordan Wells. This was another poor effort from Horsham when a great deal more was called for given the desperate situation. Horsham rarely do well in Kent but now do not venture into the county again until the third last game of the season when they visit Faversham. By then however the Hornets fate for this season could already have been decided as the statistics of twenty six defeats from thirty eight matches show the problem is not just about the journey into Kent. Horsham Team: Williams, Obersteller, Hamilton, Gilbert, Hughes, Welch, Camara, Vickers (Branford 68) McCreadie (Izokun 73) Nwachukwu, de Andrade (Berry 45). Unused subs: Hope, Storey.

Sam Osborne makes a cracking debut at Thundersport Motorcycling Elayne Nunan – Motorsports Reporter

Sam Osborne made a big impact as a fearless trophy hunter in his first race meeting in the Thundersport GB Club Bike Championships at Brands Hatch last weekend (March 7/8). Moving up to the heavier weight club is a big step up for Sam after his rookie season last year. But with MSG Racing behind him and riding their Suzuki GSX-R600, Sam pulled out all the stops. Qualifying 3rd place on the grid on Saturday, Sam got stuck straight into battle, leading the first two races well over half the time, taking a 3rd, followed by a 2nd. Sunday qualifying placed Sam 2nd

on the grid and after 12 laps of sparring with the other frontrunners he took a 2nd, getting a lap time of 49 seconds. The final race produced 12 laps of nail-biting entertainment as Sam and the other frontrunner pulled ahead of the field, repeatedly swapping places. Victory looked to be Sam’s as he led the way round the final lap only to highside on the final bend, flung up into the air, first place swiped away seconds from the finish. His rival crashed into him, running over his leg, leaving both out of the race. Despite the disappointing blow, which left Sam with a broken bone in his foot, nothing could take away his achievements which left his bosses at MSG Racing “very happy and very proud of him”.

Sam, 23, from Billingshurst, said: “What a weekend!! I went in hoping to make top 10 and came out with two 2nds and a 3rd. The last race was the best, me and another rider battling it out. I was leading when I highsided the bike and got thrown into the air. My bike hit me in the back followed by the other rider’s bike. But still it was an amazing weekend with some wicked racing.” Next round is Donington Park on April 11/12. Sam is seeking sponsorship, big or small, towards the ongoing cost of the season, with each weekend in the nine-race calendar costing £1,000 for track fees, tyres and petrol - call Sam on 07743 931964 or see his Facebook page Sam Osborne Racing.
