Home hunters got a £700,000 helping hand from council tax payers in their search for houses and flats. Residents soon filled Reeves Court at Crawley Road, Horsham, after it was finished in March and an opening ceremony has now been held to celebrate the completion of badly needed lower cost homes. Horsham District Council put £700,000 of public money into the £2 million scheme, which was developed by The Guinness Partnership. The scheme for eight two-bedroom houses and six two-bed flats was designed to provide spacious accommodation, onsite parking, rear gardens and secure bicycle storage. The homes, which the council
says have all been built to meet modern standards for sustainable living, are near primary schools, amenities and transport links. Jon Milburn, Guinness’ director of development, said: “The country is facing a severe shortage of new affordable homes so we are pleased to invest in these 14 new homes in Horsham. I’d like to thank the Homes and Community Agency and Horsham District Council for their financial support for this project.” Councillors toured of some of the properties before joining residents and Guinness Partnership staff for refreshments. Cllr Claire Vickers, Horsham District Council’s cabinet member for planning and development said : “Horsham District Council has worked closely with the Guinness Partnership over
a number of years and provided a £700,000 grant to deliver this excellent scheme. The council is committed to providing homes across the district that people can afford. The Guinness Partnership is helping to supply Horsham with the affordable properties we need, and I am therefore extremely pleased that we have been able to support this project.”Built by Sunninghill Construction Co Ltd and designed by architect Richard Pike Associates, the homes stand on land that had been derelict for many years. Pictured are Tom Crowley, chief executive, Horsham District Council; Michael Gray the Guinness business development manager and Cllr David Searle of North Horsham Parish Council.
People living with dementia and their carers have a new club in Slinfold. Age UK Horsham District has launched it at The Cobblers, Slinfold, and the session runs every Wednesday between 10am – 3pm. The club was set in partnership with Saxon Weald housing association, and is the third rural club to be opened by Age UK Horsham District, with Storrington and Henfield already running. All three of the dementia clubs are small, each taking up to 12 members which the charity says enables members to choose activities around their own individual hobbies interests and abilities. One of the main objectives of the Slinfold Dementia Club is to provide much needed respite for carers allowing them to pursue their own hobbies or to work, whilst knowing that their loved ones are having an enjoyable day out. A typical day at the club may include quizzes, light exercise, music, board games, arts and crafts as well as occasional trips and visits from outside entertainers. Also included in the fee is a two-course lunch and all refreshments. Slinfold Dementia club offers free trial days for any potential members. Channel swimmer Paul Magg won’t be singing the song Blue Moon after being forced to abandon his second attempt to reach France. Paul, 53, thinks a surge in current from the effects of a so-called blue moon was a factor in him having to give up within sight of a landing spot on the French coast. The architect from West Chiltington was just over 16 hours into his charity swim when he decided it was safer to stop . Paul told the Post: “It was a blue moon that evening and it only happens every three years. The tides were unbelievable. Although I was swimming well enough I was being pushed away from land. I was exhausted but I was in no pain. Although I wasn’t going at my full speed I was still moving. “The angle of my swim was not right, because of the tide, and I found myself moving away from land.” Paul’s big consolation is that admirers of his courage have helped him towards hitting his £2,000 target for the Kent Surrey and Sussex
Sussex Police is appealing for witnesses after about 90 grams of cocaine was discovered in woodland near Storrington. A suspicious package of white powder wrapped in cellophane was found by a member of the public at about 7.10pm on July 29 in Sullington Warren. Officers carried out an extensive search of the area with police dogs
and found two more parcels hidden in a tree stump. Field tests confirmed the substance was the Class A drug. PCSO Carol Boniface said: “We are keen to speak to anyone with information about drug supply or possession. You can get in touch by emailing 101@sussex.pnn.police. uk or by calling 101 quoting reference 1386 of 28/07.”

Missing dog could have been shot and stolen A dog that went missing might have been shot and stolen, police believe. Analysis of blood samples discovered where Barney, described as a treasured family pet, went missing near Horsham have shown that he could have been taken. Barney, a black German shorthaired pointer, was being walked in woods with another dog around the Mayes Lane area of Warnham about 7am on July 20. The dogs ran off together and then shots were heard following by the whimpering of an injured animal. The other dog returned to the owner and he later found some blood along with some used shotgun cartridges in woodland behind Mayes Park. He had the blood DNA tested and it has shown it to be from a dog. PC James Munden said: “It’s not known what happened to Barney, but he is quite a valuable dog, so we are investigating the possibil-
ity that he has been stolen. He is a much loved family pet and his disappearance has been very upsetting for them.”

New NHS help ‘app’ up for award A new ‘App’ helping Horsham and Mid Sussex residents find the best ways to find local health services this summer has been nominated for a national award. The web ‘app’, called ‘Health Help Now’, has been nominated for prestigious national e-health awards. The ‘app’ is now available at www. healthhelpnow-nhs.net and will help local people quickly find the best place for treatment and advice. The e-health award winners will be held in central London in October. It is estimated that nationally one in five visits to accident and emergency departments are for minor conditions, such as coughs, colds, muscular pain or allergies, which could be managed safely and effectively at home or with advice from a pharmacist. Locally that would equate to
about 60 of the 300 people a day who attend accident and emergency department at East Surrey Hospital, Redhill. Horsham and Mid Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group, which is responsible for buying health services locally, wants to highlight alternative choices available should people need treatment because they are unwell or injured. The Health Help Now web ‘app’ helps people review their symptoms and suggests which local NHS service will be best placed to help them. It lists common symptoms and offers suggestions for treatment, with the one which works best for most people listed first. Health Help Now then links through to local services, and shows whether they are open or closed, their location and directions.

Scouts get a boost from police fund
GATTON MANOR One bad turn did a good turn for West Sussex scouts attending awards ceremonies when Horsham police gave them a cash boost. Sussex Police give out regular amounts of money to deserving causes, raised from income they received from sale of confiscated stolen property from the proceeds of crime. In the latest donation Horsham police gave £150 to the West Sussex County Scouts, based at Lodge Hill, Watersfield, to help fund a lectern. PC Natalie Stoner presented the donation to the county com-
missioner Irene Orford who said: “I would like to say thank you on behalf of West Sussex County Scouts for the donation from Sussex Police. The money was put towards a lectern which will be used for our county awards ceremonies throughout the year.” The donation was arranged by PCSO Julie Green and comes from the Police Property Act Fund (PPAF), made up of monies received by the police from property confiscated by order of the court and then sold. Ella fantastic on the trail Teenager Ella Hamlin has been hot on the trail after the Elephantastic launch in Horsham. Quicker than the swing of a trunk Ella, 14, from Southwater, got down to tracking down 185 of the beautifully decorated model elephants. And for posterity she recorded them in ‘selfies’ photographs as she completed the three trails in the first two days, posting her adventures on the Elephantastic Facebook page. Ella said: “It was great fun doing the trails. I loved seeing all the elephants and the designs are so creative. You can really see that a lot of effort has gone into each one.” John LeRossignol, Horsham Rotarian, said: “We are thrilled with the success of the trails so far and a huge congratulations goes to Ella who completed them in record time……unless someone knows differently! It was great to see her photos of the elephants and we would love others to have a go at completing all three trails and taking selfies as they go. We are so pleased with the response we have had so far and anyone interested in bidding on an elephant can now do so via our website.” The three safari trails are all now available with two in Horsham town centre, and one in the surrounding countryside, and will be open until
Monday August 31. All completed entry forms will be entered into a prize draw with over 100 prizes on offer with the star prize being a family trip to an elephant orphanage in Kenya. All trail maps and entry forms can be purchased for £1 from the Elephantastic Shop in Swan Walk Horsham, next to the EE Shop, and the rural trail can also be purchased at various locations on the route; New House Farm near the A264, Fishers Farm at Wisborough Green, Swains Farm Shop at Henfield, Billingshurst Post Office and

Celebrating 21 years of dedication Henfield Day Centre gets
Staff, volunteers and customers at the St Barnabas House charity shop in Steyning celebrated its 21st birthday. Passers-by were greeted with the sight of a musician performing by its window and the shop was reported to be bursting at the seams as everybody joined in the fun and enjoyed a slice of birthday cake. The birthday celebrations presented a great opportunity for the St Barnabas House charity shop to thank committed volunteers for all their hard work over the last few years. Jan Harper, Head of Retail, was delighted to present volunteer Carol Banks with her ten-year service badge.

Carol said: “I choose to volunteer for St Barnabas House because it is such a valuable local charity and it does not get enough money from the Government to support the great work that the hospice does. The Steyning shop has such a great vibe about it; it’s a fun place to volunteer”. Customer Anne Jennings and her dog Sam have been supporters of the shop for more than six years and are both regular visitors. Anne said: “It’s a great place to shop; I pop in several times a week to find a bargain. The price and quality of stock is really good, I’ve picked up a lovely white linen jacket and an original watercolour of Steyning town by a local artist. The staff are always incredibly helpful and the atmosphere is so relaxed”. Jan Harper said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to Carol and all the Steyning shop volunteers, their commitment to our work and their community is remarkable and they make such a valuable contribution. It was a privilege to meet such a generous group of helpers whose hard work and dedication to St Barnabas House is unstinting. They kindly volunteer so much of their time to ensure that we continue to raise money to help St Barnabas provide specialist palliative care to adults with advanced progressivelife limiting illnesses, both within the hospice and in the comfort of the patients’ homes.” Caption Jan Harper, left, and Carol Banks

the centre is at an advanced stage and the county council says it is planned that the formal handover will take place before the end of this year. Professional care staff at the Haven will be employed by Impact Initiatives, a Sussex charity who have been selected by the Partnership to run the day-to-day services for the benefit of the community. The county council said that as the Community Partnership was not set up to take over the running of major assets, a Community Interest Company, called Henfield Social Enterprise, has been formed. The new company will hold legal agreements with the County Council and Impact Initiatives and will be able to manage assets such as the Haven on behalf of the community. Peter Catchpole, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “The community’s support will help ensure the success of the centre. “This is an exciting time as agreements are finalised to hand it over to the community and the Community Interest Company works on its ideas for the centre’s future.” Henfield Community Partnership Chairman Tony Jackson said: “We want to create a sustainable, lively and active centre which is widely used by local groups and individuals and the community has a sense of ownership. “It will be a place where people feel valued and able to contribute, feel welcome and safe, and enjoy spending their time.” Henfield Day Centre will become one of a number of assets that have been transferred by the County Council to a local community group, which will enable local communities to manage their own needs. Members of Age UK Horsham are looking for help as they part in the national Big Knit campaign in association with the innocent company and creating the small hats for ‘smoothie’ tops. The knitters want as many people as possible to help them finish their work for a November 27 deadline. One knitter has already pledged to make 1000 hats on her own, and has already reached more than 600. The miniature woolly hats will adorn ‘innocent smoothie’ bottles, which will be sold in stores nationwide from February. For each smoothie and hat sold, ‘innocent’ will donate 25p to help Age UK fund national and local winter projects. Last year alone, more than 800,000 hats were created, with designs including a bird cage, fruit, soldiers, peas in a pod, a bee’s nest, a crown and fishermen with their
A bear met a pal from Elephantastic when a store launched a partnership with a charity that helps children deal with losing a loved one. Sainsbury’s at Horsham launched its partnership with their new local charity of the year, Winston’s Wish. Whilst in store Winston, the charity’s mascot, met the Sainsbury’s ‘Active with the Kids’ Elephant which is part of the town’s recently launched Elephantastic trails that run until the end of this month. Customers chose the charity at the beginning of July and it will now receive a year’s worth of support through fundraising and
awareness from the store. Representatives from the charity joined Sainsbury’s staff to start the fundraising with the launch of the one million 5p challenge. Winston’s Wish is hoping to encourage as many people as possible to collect 5ps in an old jam jar and help them raise £50,000. Leaflets and jar stickers are available at the customer service desk at Sainsbury’s Horsham. Winston’s Wish started in 1992 to help children rebuild their lives after suffering the loss of a parent or parents. Janice Leeming, chief officer at Age UK Horsham District, said: “The colder months of the year can be really tough for many older people who can face difficulties protecting themselves from the harsh winter weather, getting out and about and staying connected. That’s why it’s so important that local knitters get behind The Big Knit to help raise funds for vital local winter services. We need knitters in Horsham District to create lots of miniature hats so we can help older people in the local area by arranging for them to have a regular home visit or to access benefits they may be eligible for through our Information and Advice service.” For more information contact 01403 751329/ 260560 or log onto www.ageuk.org.uk/horshamdistrict. “Sainsbury’s local charity of the year scheme has made a real difference to many charities over the last few years and we’re delighted to have been selected.” Derek Boarer, manager at Sainsbury’s Horsham, said: “We’re really looking forward to working with Winston’s Wish over the next year and the team have some great ideas for fundraising. We hope our support will make a real difference to the charity, and customers enjoy the variety of activities we are planning.” The Local Charity scheme is now in its seventh year and has raised more than £7 million to support local charities since 2009.

The Big Nibble 2015 is on the way First responders get great response from new store
Fans of good food and drink can look forward to a festival of local food in Horsham. The Big Nibble will be staged on September 5 and 6 in the town centre to launch the month-long 2015 Food and Drink Festival. Organisers say shoppers will get the chance to meet and talk with producers who really know and care for their products. On the Saturday there will be live cookery theatre which will be host to local and Michelin Star chefs who will be giving top tips and insight into cooking with some of the best food ingredients. New this year, the International
Food Festival will showcase food from around the world. On the Sunday East Street, Market Square and Piries Place will be the place for those who love to eat. Many of Horsham’s restaurants highlight their unique characters with a range of free tasters and ‘goodies’ and entertainment, The local Horsham restaurant’s chefs will also have an opportunity to show off their skills with the new ‘Fun with Food Kitchen’ showcase in Piries Place , Mamma Carmela’s Pizza Challenge and the Crates Local Produce and Cafe team Omelette Speed Challenge. These shows will also be inter-
laced with various demonstrations of the skills that go into the preparation of food and drink in Horsham’s leading restaurants and bars. Returning this year is the Little Nibble children’s food festival which will run for two days over the festival aimed at the tastes of youngsters. Food for adults will also be available. For classic transport enthusiasts, a variety of buses will be brought together once again for the Sunday’s Horsham Bus Rally based at Hop Oast Park and Ride. The services will be running to the Carfax and many of our district’s towns and villages.
People who help the public in medical emergencies got a big boost from the new Sainsbury store in Billingshurst. When it was announced that Sainsbury’s were opening a new store in Billingshurst, the area’s Community First Responder team saw a great opportunity to set up their 15th public access defibrillator site. Not only was permission given for the site, but the team benefited from a £1000 grant from Sainsbury’s contractor, Williams Southern Ltd to put towards the project. The team had even more positive news when it was informed that it had been chosen as the new stores nominated charity for the year. The group’s Hannah AlsburyMorris and some team members at-
tended the opening of the new store and helped spread the word to the local community about the role of responders. Chairman of the responders group Paul Berry was given the honour of cutting the ribbon and opening the store. The group, known as BEAT, says members are very much looking forward to working with the Sainsbury’s Billingshurst team in the coming year. It says it is also grateful to the North Sussex Seagulls who also made a financial contribution to the project. Community First Responders are volunteers who respond to medical emergencies in their local areas alongside the ambulance service, and are always looking for more team members. Public sites provide defibrillators that members of the public can access in the case of someone suffering a cardiac arrest. More information about BEAT may be found on www.beatresponders.org.uk The group is pictured at the tapecutting and also showing off its new equipment.

Fascinating glimpse into Horsham’s past History lovers can enjoy a photographic glimpse into Horsham’s past with a new exhibition running until the autumn. Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery will feature selected photographs from the Cecil Cramp Archive to October 24.
It offers a chance to view further gems from the Cramp Archive of historic photographs of old Horsham from 1870 – 1950, donated to the museum in 2008, revealing the changing face of the town over the years. Museum volunteers catalogued the photographs and they will be
part of a project to have a searchable database of the Museum’s photographic archives online by the end of the year. The photographs are available to buy as a complete set in the form of Horsham Museum’s 2016 Horsham Calendar at a price of £5. A few of the images are featured

Students stage a summer music showcase Tax payers avoid £12.9 million loss
Young musicians put a swing into the start of the summer holiday. Pupils at The Forest School in Horsham had a packed audience at their annual summer concert. The evening opened with a performance of the extremely difficult vocal ensemble ‘Hello’ from ‘The Book Of Mormon’, which the school says was superbly executed by Alex Bell, Max Paterson, Ben Whiteley, Will Evans, Joe Henderson, Nick Voget and Henry Skipton-Carter. There were performances from a number of rock bands, singing
The evening opened with a performance of the extremely difficult enemble ‘Hello’ from the book of Mormon groups, duets, amusing drama and rousing versions of ‘Chitty Chitty
Bang Bang’ ‘Lady Marmalade’ and ‘Thriller’ from the school band. The whole event was brought together by host and Year nine pupil Kieran Boulton, who delighted the audience with his quick -witted and quirky humour. The evening culminated in an impressive performance of ‘Stars’ in four part harmony and whole cast performance of ‘One Day More’ from the forthcoming schools’ production of ‘Les Miserables’ with guests from Millais School.
Council tax payers in Horsham and the rest of West Sussex will not have to stand the loss of £12.9 million invested by a council in an Icelandic bank that collapsed. This month West Sussex County Council will receive a second repayment that will mean it has recovered almost all of the money deposited. The council says it will recoup between £12.6million and the total £12.9million that had been deposited with Heritable Bank and lost when its parent company Landsbanki collapsed in October, 2013. An initial payment was made in August, 2013, but now the bank’s administrator has confirmed an additional payment would be made. Leader of West Sussex County Council Louise Goldsmith said: “From day one we were determined to recover the money invested at the time of the crash. I remember saying that it would take between ten and 15 years so I’m delighted we’ve recovered this money for the taxpayers of West Sussex much sooner than that. “Our determination has paid off
Summertime, and the recycling is easy...
and we stand to recover between 98 per cent and 100 per cent of the money we invested. This is good news for the West Sussex taxpayer. The money will go back into supporting our key frontline services.” In total, councils across the UK had more than £1billion invested with Iceland’s three largest banks which collapsed in 2013 Landsbanki, Glitnir, and Kaupthing Singer and Friedlander. At the time councils invested the money, Iceland’s banks had strong reputations and high credit ratings. It emerged following the collapse that the nation’s banking system owed an estimated six times the country’s Gross Domestic Product. This meant Iceland’s biggest banks were unable to refinance loans when the world’s credit markets dried up in the wake of the failure of US investment bank Lehman Brothers. The Nordic nation became the first western European country in 25 years to appeal to the International Monetary Fund to save its battered economy. Recovery rates have varied between individual councils.
Items should be clean, dry and loose;
not tied up in plastic bags!
Summertime is approaching and that means lots of picnics and barbeques. Horsham District Council is asking residents not to forget to recycle all those extra bottles, cans and plastic food trays.
Top tips for the summer party season: • Place a container next to the barbeque for people to pop their empty drinks cans, bottles and plastic burger trays in. Make sure drinks cans and bottles are totally empty and no leftover food is put in. • Just tip all your recycling straight into your blue-top bin from the container. • Consider using washable plates and cutlery rather than plastic knives, forks and paper plates. • You can’t recycle plastic knives and forks but you can re-use them. • Ensure that everything is clean, dry and loose in your blue-top bin, if food waste or liquid gets in your bin it can ruin the rest of your recycling.
To learn more about your recycling service, visit horsham.gov.uk/bins/recycling, email: hopoast.depot@horsham.gov.uk or telephone 01403 733144

Defending your Get the best out of rivers patch with fences guy deakins Gardening
How to get the best out of rivers is the theme of a session in Storrington next month. The Riverside Habitat Management Workshop on September 23 at Meadowside is organised by the Arun and Rother Connections project to demonstrate ways to restore local rivers to improve them for fish and other wildlife. The project is a partnership between the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the Environment Agency, Sussex Wildlife Trust, South Downs National Park Author-
ity, Natural England, West Sussex County Council and the Arun and Rother Rivers Trust. The Royal Society is the lead partner, holding overall responsibility for successful delivery of the project. This is of particular interest to Storrington Conservation Society in caring for the River Storr in Fryern Dell. For more information about this and all the society’s activities, or becoming a member, get in touch with Mick Denness on 01903 745971, or look on its website www. storringtonconservation.org.uk/.
Volunteers begin an autumn programme with a working party on September 5 at 10am in Fryern Dell, clearing and coppicing around the pond. In the meantime the village waits for the results of the Bloom Competition for which judging took place in July. Events over the next few months include the group’s annual general meeting on October 31 when Damon Block, the Environment Agency Fisheries and Biodiversity Officer, will give a talk.

I love you. There, I’ve said it. The cat is out of the bag. I don’t say it for your benefit mind you. I say it purely as a way of releasing dopamin - the happiness chemical into my beautiful mind. There is a point to my opening gambit of course. It is a simple way of illustrating why we love to garden. Because it makes us feel good. But there are down sides we shouldn’t ignore. With all the recent furore about poor old Cecil the lion being slaughtered by a vain glorious tooth-puller, one forgets we have our own personal lions in the garden. Lions you see are predators and destructive ones at that. If left to their own devices a pride of lions will quite happily munch their way through a herd of domestic cattle. This of course causes the average farmer much distress, so he naturally acts. He builds thorn fences, hires guards and sometimes resorts to killing the problem beasts. So what does this have to do with you,
the humble Sussex homesteader? Well look into our garden. At a micro level there are any number of insects and animals waiting to destroy your tender perennials. From ‘common’ snails to the much rarer Privet moth we wage unthinking war on species we share the planet with. What do we do? We defend our patch with fences, guards, deterrents and killer concoctions. We are little different from our African cousins in that respect - excepting of course, that our gardens are hardly our livelihoods. But where does Cecil come in, a happy lion who was lured from the safety of a nature reserve to his untimely doom? Well look about you. We are surrounded by nature reserves here in Horsham district. With insect populations dropping in some cases by 80% and a shrinking green belt, our gardens offer some rare and distinct British species with a welcome refuge. In these dying days of our summer, please think on how we see the world. A minute violet ground beetle may not have the same cache as Cecil, but is vitally important to our varied ecosystems. Ours is a wonderfully isle with many rare or unusual species, let’s work together to keep it special.

Suits you Sir! Students celebrate anniversary An old suit got an airing as students stepped back in time to celebrate a 30th anniversary. Guests threw themselves into the spirit of an 1980’s theme, featuring music, videos from the period for the Challenge of Management celebration by Collyer’s College of Horsham. Ian McAlister, who has been involved for over a decade, gave a presentation to the students dressed in his original 1980’s suit and he even sported a mullet-style wig. There was special guest appearance from a popular former Collyer’s Business teacher, Richard Bond, who helped run the first event in 1985. The session forms part of the college’s “Planning Your
Future” initiative and gives students a taste of the real world of business management and employability skills.
Challenge of Management has been going for 30 years The event, which took place at the Holbrook Club in Horsham, enabled teams of ten students, each led by a top representative from the regional business community, to compete throughout the day in a number of business games and
team building exercises. Collyer’s Melanie Hargreaves said: “Challenge of Management has been going for 30 years and we were proud to welcome back Richard Bond. Richard had previously taught Business Studies at Collyer’s and been involved in the event in the past. Richard also taught one of the advisors, Steve Spurling, who is now International Commercial Manager for HSBC.” Ian is pictured (fourth left) with Melanie Hargreaves, Mark Surguy, Sam French, Sarah Ediss, Richard Bond, Kim Sim; Ian Townsend, Smita Warren, Maxine Hamilton, Steve Spurling; Neil Bennett, Lorraine Nugent, Lucy Hargreaves, Mark Goodson; Tracy Bennett and Dan Hubbard.

A West Sussex vineyard’s wine has been voted the best of its kind in England in a prestigious award. Alison Nightingale’s Albourne Estate, near Henfield, scooped the accolade for her 2014 Bacchus in only her second year of wine production. The vineyard beat more than 300 other entries to take the top Wine of the Year Trophy at the UK Vineyard Association’s English and Welsh Wine of the Year Competition 2015, the industry’s annual national wine awards. The awards, judged by six Masters of Wine, included entries of sparkling as well as still wine from several established brands. And this year saw the highest number of competitors entering the awards, making the win especially important for Alison, one of the few female wine producers to win such an
important title. Alison, who lives on the estate with her three daughters and husband said: “This is great recognition of all the hard work and effort we have been putting in here at Albourne Estate. “One of my key aims at the outset was to produce the best Bacchus in England and to help put Bacchus on the map as the quintessential English wine. I’m excited to have achieved this in only our second ever vintage.” The English and Welsh Wine of the Year Competition 2015 judges described Alison’s Bacchus as being “very aromatic” with the taste of citrus, lemon and lime, nettle, fennel, gooseberry, honey and some spices. Join up to end broadband nightmare Residents living near a broadband “not spot” might get connected if enough of them get together for a special link-up. Architect Paul Magg, of Harbolets Road, West Chiltington, is hoping about 80 people in the area will show interest in paying for a special repeater mast to be installed at a nearby high spot near Badgers Wood Stud. It would pick up a signal from an existing mast at Little Bignor Hill to enable wireless broadband. So far more than 40 people have been keen to sign up for the service, which would involve a connection fee and monthly payments. Mr Magg said the existing BT landlines could not provide the service
and added: “All this area has terrible broadband. I live only 25 minutes from Gatwick and yet I cannot get broadband. We have to rely on satellite. It’s a complete ‘not spot’ for practically everything. “We need this repeater mast, to go over the hill. I have had more than 40 people interested but I need about 80 as a trigger point to get it started.” The link is being offered by Blaze Wireless of Chichester who can be contacted via https://www.blaze-wireless. co.uk/ or for those without broadband who cannot get assistance with using the internet telephone the firm on 01243 574810. The company said on its website:
“To date we have received nearly 40 confirmations of interest from potential subscribers which represents a little less than half of the target subscribers that we hope to achieve in order to render the project viable. “If you have expressed interest already, thank you and please continue to spread the word. In anticipation of reaching our target subscription level during the next few weeks we are completing our implementation surveys and firming up network installation details so that we are in a position to move ahead quickly with broadband service provision when the time comes.”
Talent takes Louise to summer university
BREAKING NEWS CLINICALLY PROVEN TO HELP REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF TINNUTUS
Talented art student Louise Garner had the chance to attend the prestigious Courthauld Institute’s Summer University, where she studied History of Art over four days. Louise explained: “This was an amazing opportunity to get a feel for what it’s like to be a student at the Courthauld, I enjoyed being able to talk to people my age who shared my interest and enthusiasm for Art History. We attend a range of lectures and seminars over the week around the theme of ‘local and global’, this allowed us to discuss and develop our own ideas. “The course really helped to expand my understanding of Art, in addition to building on skills which are essential to any student.” The highlight of the week was a chance to visit to the Conservation Studios, to see the fascinating ‘collision’ between art and science. Louise, a student at Collyer’s College, Horsham, said: “Next year
I will be applying for History of Art at University, the Courthauld being one of my options, afterwards I aspire to do a post-graduate in the Conservation of Art.” Groups of students also had the opportunity to curate their own exhibition around the Courthauld’s collection, which was presented at the end of the week. Louise’s group created an exhibition about the effects of the development of photography on paintings in the 19th century. Louise’s tutor at Collyer’s, Amanda Hall, said: “I was so impressed with Louise’s presentation at Somerset House. She was the first speaker and her ideas and comments were very well received by the audience. Teachers and parents were also shown an overview of the Summer University at The Courthauld Institute of Art. It is an impressive week of activities and I shall certainly be encouraging more of my students to apply.”

Paul Westbrook, Master Technician at Station Garage, commented: “We try to keep our groups quite small, to ensure that those taking part feel at ease and comfortable enough to ask us questions. buy diamonds at wholesale prices, with expert and very personal advice, guidance and assistance from Dominic himself. Caroline Whittaker, a Diamond Club member summed up the evening: “Dominic is an infectious host, who guarantees a lot of laughs, plus a good insight into the world of diamonds. The jewellery he had for sale at wholesale prices was absolutely beautiful. We were spoilt for choice on the variety of individual designs to choose from. A good night was had by all!” The next Diamond Club event will be held at Wabi’s, in Horsham, on the September 24, and will include a demonstration on how to prepare Japanese food, as well as more information about the fascinating history and world of diamonds. ferent colours, qualities and cuts of diamonds before inviting guests to make themselves at home in the seating area. The enthralled audience then passed round many different gems, including one particularly stunning 1.92 carat example (classified as having D1 colour (the best) and SI1 clarity), which although should retail for £33,172 and be sold wholesale for £16,856, Sakakini was offering to club members at the astonishing price of £10,680 (plus VAT). And as guests touched and felt the different cuts and stones, Dominic’s passion for making his gems and his ability to make them accessible to his club members simply shone through. Award winning Sakakini Jewellers were recently named retailer of the year at the Business Matters awards and last week’s event is part of the Sakakini Diamond Club, which hosts quarterly events. The Club aims to educate and inform, whilst remaining fun and light hearted. And most importantly the club allows members the opportunity to
Ginny Bishop, who attended the event also commented: “It was a fantastic evening. I learnt so many useful tips and basic car maintenance s k i l l s throughout the evening in a fun yet informat i v e way. The technicians were so friendly and helpful and made us feel comfortable, even when I asked some daft questions! I highly recommend women to book a space on the next event. Thanks to this evening, I am no longer afraid of breaking down and having no idea of what to do.” Spaces for the next Ladies Night are limited and those wishing to take part are invited to email events@stationgarage.skoda.co.uk, to book their place.
There was a definite sparkle in the Horsham Carfax last Thursday, as Sakakini Jewellers held their latest Diamond Club event in the evening sunshine. And with sparkling wine and nibbles provided by Costello’s and a beautiful selection of Italian silver jewellery to browse over, the event had a distinctively Italian flair. Thirty or more guests mingled with precious stones and glasses of wine and owner, Dominic Sakakini gave another fascinating insight into the world of diamonds. He explained the phenomenal growth in the value of diamonds of 15% per year over the last 50 years and how that makes diamonds a very powerful investment when compared to more conventional ISA type investment schemes. With huge potential for growth over a period of just a few years, Dominic explained that far from being a girl’s best friend, diamonds are now an increasingly lucrative and flexible option for the wile investor. Dominic also went on to demonstrate the significance of the dif-

The Billy Joel Songbook comes to The Capitol Sigma Sounds live recordings. This incredible honour inspired Elio to fulfil a lifetime ambition of creating a theatre show, showcasing the wonderful songbook of the sixtime Grammy award winner, Billy Joel. And so, ‘The Billy Joel Songbook performed by Elio Pace and his band’ was born.

Last year, with Billy Joel’s blessing, Elio took to the road with the first ever Billy Joel national theatre tour anywhere in the world, enthralling audiences at 70 venues around the UK and Ireland. With Joel’s reluctance to tour the world anymore, there are many fans out there that have never had the opportunity to hear his music live. ‘The Billy Joel Songbook’, packed with over 30 of Joel’s hits and fan favourites, will give everyone a fantastic opportunity to hear his wonderful songbook played and sung by the brilliant Elio Pace and his magnificent 6-piece band. Wonderful words about Elio by some great people: “Elio rocks!” Brian May “Elio is tremendous... I’m a big fan. Music made the old fashioned way... played” Huey Lewis
Ahead of hosting ‘The Blockheads at the Brewery’, a concert to raise funds for the Dark Star Foundation, the legendary Blockheads joined the Sussex brewers to brew a special beer to mark the event.
Blockhead, as it will be known, is a play on the brewer’s most popular beer, Hophead, and was created by the band and the brewers, after what Dark Star director, James Cuthbertson, described as “an ex-
tensive tasting”. James added: “The 4% beer is a nod to our very own Hophead, but taken to the dark side through a use of specialty malts, making it a little stronger and hopefully giving drinkers a reason to be cheerful.”

The ‘60s group Manfred Mann is now considered, more than ever, one of the finest and most respected bands from that era. Their numerous pop hits were R&B based with an undercurrent of jazz - a very unusual but winning combination of playing style and substance. As a result, their records have a timeless quality and, some 53 years
on, The Manfreds, with original ‘front man’ Paul Jones, will be performing many of their hits, along with a mix of Jazz and Blues songs, from some of their best-known albums. Paul Jones, with his unique harmonica sound, will be joined by Mike Hugg on keyboards, Tom McGuinness on lead guitar, Rob Townsend on drums, Marcus Cliffe
on bass guitar and Simon Currie on saxophone/flute. All excellent musicians who will provide a full evening’s entertainment with a few ‘surprise’ renditions of their work, not only with The Manfreds, but with their individual connections. To book tickets for the show on September 25, contact the Capitol Theatre, Horsham.
Mrs Beeton’s Book of household Managment Mrs Beeton, My Sister is an allnew retelling of this entertaining and moving story, using the latest research. Many years after Isabella Beeton’s untimely death, Bessie Mayson muses on the extraordinary life of her famous big sister. They were the eldest of 21 children, brought up in the Grand Stand at Epsom Race Course. Quiet, obedient Isabella fell for a charming publisher called Sam Beeton, and joined his rackety life in journalism, culminating in her world-famous “Beeton’s Book of Household Management”. Her family disapproved. But were they right? Thirty years on, Bessie is not so sure. Alison Neil has written eight onewoman plays to date, all based on real women from history. Her plays are always entertaining, amusing and full of historical interest. Mrs Beeton, My Sister is showing at the Capitol on September 3. Age 12+ recommended.

Pizza Express is celebrating the launch of its exciting new look restaurant in Horsham. Located in East Street, this restaurant has been totally transformed and features artwork paying tribute to Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the major Romantic poets, who was born in Horsham. Each PizzaExpress restaurant is individually designed
– often using well known places, people or historical events from the area as the basis. The interior of the Horsham restaurant has a range of collage artworks inspired by Shelley’s poetry and his story. The artworks combine pieces of text and imagery that give a contemporary interpretation of his work.

The illustrious history of our Horsham store dates back to 1925, when Messrs. Scott & Sargeant opened their premises at 26 East Street. The business flourished and grew and allowed the shop to take over the adjoining property. In 2004, nearly 80 years later, Scott & Sargeant became a Steamer Trading shop when the owners
decided to retire. When we had finished the shop had grown into no.28, next door, and acquired wonderful new spaces for displaying fabulous kitchenware – and even a café. Today, our Horsham store is a real emporium, with a fantastic selection of everything for the kitchen and table spread out over 7,000 sq.ft.

CORNER
Friday 14 August 2015
Make gardening easier with multipurpose compost Compost is an essential part of gardening as it feeds soil with a diversity of nutrients and microorganisms, which are specifically designed to improve plant growth. Compost also increases soil stability, improves drainage and helps retain moisture – all essential to ensuring your garden looks in top condition all year round. There are many different varieties of compost to choose from and it can be really overwhelming deciding which one to use. Jack Dunckley’s Landscape Design has kept it simple and chosen to highlight one all purpose compost, which can be used for all aspects of gardening such as sowing, potting, planting-up containers and planting out shrubs. Last year, Bord na Móna launched a new premium RHS Chelsea Flower
Show linked all purpose peat-free compost called Vital Earth Chelsea All Purpose Compost. Jack was so impressed by Growise products that he used their Multipurpose compost - 12,000 litres of it - for his garden at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show. Jack says: “The Growise compost is great as it has a mixture of essential plant nutrients that will ensure your plants look healthy and have vigorous growth. It’s also a handy compost to use for longer lasting nutrition as it releases natural food and nutrients to plants for up to six weeks.’ Jack’s garden at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show used a range of plants and flowers including Lavandula, Echinacea, Artemisia and Salvia. Two large cream Magnolia grandiflora also thrived using the compost. “It did a fantastic job of keeping our plants
looking in excellent condition throughout the show – even in the summer heat I found we didn’t need to water as much as if we’d been using a competitor’s compost.”
Growise Multipurpose Compost can be bought at Jack Dunckley’s Birchfield Nursery. Jack contemplating the use of Growise Multipurpose Compost at the Hampton Court Flower Show 2014
Keep your plants flourishing with our Multipurpose Compost. Suitable for all round use. Available now at Birchfield Nursery 3 x 50 litre bags for only £12.00
Jack Dunckley’s top tips for using Growise Multipurpose Compost n Due to the nature of this compost, it can be difficult to judge when watering is required as the top surface can be dry while underneath it is wet. A good way to check the consistency of your compost is by taking a handful and squeezing it in your palm – if it sits easily into a ball, then watering is not needed. If it crumbles, then watering is required. n You shouldn’t need to feed your plants for at least 6 weeks after using this compost. After that, apply a diluted general multi-purpose liquid feed. This applies to young, mature or container plants. n Use a slow release fertiliser for shrubs and trees in pots.

28 Friday 14 August 2015 We often get asked by clients to include a water feature in their landscape design, as it is a fairly simple way to transform a garden, feel closer to nature and bring wildlife and interest to outdoor spaces. There is nothing more tranquil than listening to the gentle gurgle of water or watching light dance off the ripples, particularly at this time of year. At Jack Dunckley Landscape Design, we use water features in both private and show gardens. Whether it is a small natural pond or a large outdoor pool, we’ve found that water creates an eyecatching addition to any outside space.
‘Italian Job’ Show Garden
Plant of the Month
Fluid Landscaping
with Jack Dunckley Landscape Design
Jack’s team are currently working on a large pond in a garden in Henfield, which involves constructing a sizeable floating gazebo. The client’s brief was to create a space, which looked like an island and would be a perfect place for a glass of wine! When the gazebo is constructed, it will be accessible via two timber boardwalks and lined with various aquatic plants.
Daniel Barber, senior landscape designer of Jack Dunckley Landscape Design was able to feature a very small natural wildlife pond in a modest sized suburban garden in Henfield. At just one metre cubed, this small pool is now a haven for wildlife and is lined with water loving plants such as Flag Iris. The edging is a mix of Beltrami Tandur Yellow stone and timber. When Jack was only 16, he designed the tropical garden ‘A Desert’s Delight’ for the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show. This encompassed a shallow stream, which surrounded the substantial Breeze House and featured a thatched roof. Lining the water’s edge were Zantedeshia aethiopica, Calla lilies, Crocosmia Lucifer and Canna indica, all hardy tropical plants all of which work really well in damp conditions.
Jack’s top tips to keep your water feature looking at it’s best: n Ponds don’t need to be too perfect. They are great habitats for a variety of animals to live and hide in, so don't over-manage them. n Plants are great habitats for wildlife, so aim for a good mix of underwater plants, plants with floating leaves and plants that grow out of the water. n Try to have a balance of shade and sun as too much shade will reduce plant growth and fallen leaves may lead to a lot of decaying organic matter at the bottom. n A mixture of shallow and deep water provides a variety of habitats for plants and animals but it doesn’t need not be too deep - a small pond, 1ft deep is enough for wildlife to flourish.
In 2012, Jack’s ‘Italian Job’ show garden used water as a key feature in the design. The crisp, clear water defined the colour and shape of the Buxus sempervirens and Allium senecens, which surrounded the pool. Walking over the pool on the low, tropical Ipe hardwood bridge to the covered terrace, Jack’s vision was to create a relaxed space to enjoy the garden and pool as it shimmered in the sun. Jack’s ‘Birchfield’ garden had a smaller square pool and the water was mixed with a dark dye to create the impression of more depth than there actually was. The jet black water really made the light stone paving and patio area stand out. Strategically placed in and around the pool were plants such as Equisetum japonicum, Caltha palustris, Thalia dealbata, Pontederia cordata, Carex Evergold, Hosta Sum and Substance, which all thrive next to water.
Rudbeckia fulgida var. deamii Commonly know as ‘Deam's coneflower’, Rudbeckia is part of the Asteraceae family. It is an upright herbaceous perennial, which grows to 60cm and has oval, dark green, hairy leaves and bright yellow daisies. Rudbeckia flower from late summer to mid autumn and make a beautiful, colourful addition to any garden. Rudbeckia are available at Jack Dunckley Birchfield Nursery.
AUGUST/SEPT OFFER Rudbeckia From £6.95 each 0r 3 for £15.00
n Be careful when using chemicals near a pond. Small ponds are not able to dilute toxic chemicals sufficiently so they will have a big impact on plant growth and animals. n Use rain water if possible as tap water can contain high levels of nutrients such as nitrates so using it to fill your water feature will encourage algae and may turn it a murky green. Be aware that particularly at this time of year water evaporates during hot weather, leading to the water level dropping. n Fish can look great in ponds, but do not mix well with other wildlife. Don't transfer fish, plants or frog spawn between ponds as this can introduce disease and problem plants. Wedding Glamour
Plant Hire service for Weddings or Corporate Functions
At Jack Dunckley’s Birchfield Nursery, we love nothing more than getting positive feedback from clients who have used one of our horticultural services.
n To encourage healthy growth apply an annual dressing of Growmore and a mulch of organic matter in the spring. n To create topiary such as the popular ‘lollipop’, select one upright shoot to act as your main stem, tie this to a cane and remove all others. Gradually clear the lower part of the stem of shoots and foliage, continuing until the desired height of main stem is reached. This could take several years. n Clip your topiary into shape, either by eye or using a template.
n Allow for the plant to grow to the required height before its main leader is trimmed.

You can rent topiary from Jack Dunckley’s Birchfield Nursery for weddings or events, but if you want to invest in a piece you will need to know how to maintain it. Topiary should be trimmed once or twice a year to maintain its shape. Growmore can be applied once a year in the spring for healthy growth, and mulch with bark or organic matter if the plant is not surrounded by ornamental gravel. If you’ve neglected your topiary, don’t worry! The majority of evergreen plants respond to hard pruning in early or mid-spring especially yew, box and holly. Once pruned, help promote new growth by feeding, mulching and keep them watered throughout the following seasons. Depending on the species it can take a few years for the specimen to grow back into its desired shape.
n Decide what shape you want to create - balls, pyramids and cubes are the easiest to start with.

Topiary is the art of training plants (typically evergreen shrubs and trees) into intricate shapes. It is a natural art form and has been used historically in many different European gardening styles, from early Roman gardens through to the modern day.
Here are Tom’s top tips for creating your own topiary from scratch:

Last year, Sussex based Sarah-Louise and her then fiancé hired specialised ornamental and architectural planting from the nursery for their country wedding. Heart shaped topiary and standard bay together with privet ‘lollipops’ lined the church and outdoor marquee. Tom Halliburton is the Nursery Manager at Jack Dunckley’s Birchfield Nursery and is also our resident expert in topiary, “Traditionally, cut flowers are the traditional form of wedding decoration, but topiary can really lend itself to this type of event. Since the royal wedding, we’ve definitely seen an increase in sales for topiary, exotic and architectural planting for weddings.”

Average home gains £9,000 in value The average property in England and Wales is now worth in excess of £9,000 more than it was a year ago. New figures from the Land Registry show the typical value of a home was up to £181,619 in June, an increase of £9,252 in comparison with the same month in 2014. The substantial rise also takes house prices to an all-time high point, ahead of the previous peak of £180,983 recorded in November 2007. Kevin Shaw, National Sales Director at Leaders, says the sharp rise in house prices is evidence of overwhelming demand from buyers and a healthy market. “House prices are the highest they have ever been, with homeowners enjoying average capital appreciation of more than £9,000 in the last 12 months and an extra 1.1 per cent in the last month alone,” he explains.
“With the market made up of a higher number of buyers than sellers right now, it is a lucrative time to put a property on the market and sellers can feel extremely confident about getting the best possible price for their home.” Across England and Wales, house prices grew by 5.4 per cent in the year to June, but in certain areas this rise was particularly steep. For instance, properties in London continue to attract significant price gains, rising by 9.2 per cent over the period in question, while there was an 8.4 per cent surge in the south-east. Kevin adds: “All parts of the country witnessed an increase in house prices over the last year, so no matter where you live, your property could be worth more than you realise. “While the largest rises in property prices have been seen in London and the south-east, the
east, south-west and north-west have also enjoyed a boom in recent months, making it a great time to sell in these areas too. “A buoyant market presents an attractive opportunity for sellers to potentially achieve a quick sale at a high price. This can provide you with the funds you need to make your next move up the ladder or to downsize while banking a hefty sum.” People who have lived in their home for a couple of years or more may not be aware of just how much it is now worth, following substantial increases in house prices over that time, so it can be a good idea to ask an experienced agent to carry out a valuation.
For instance, the average property in London is now worth £481,820, while in the southeast this figure is £247,375 and in the east of England it is £203,428.

At the time of year when we’re either going away on holiday or spending more time with family and friends enjoying the warmer weather and longer days. NHBC has produced a checklist to help improve security to reduce the risk of unwanted visitors. The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) reported around 3 in 100 households were victims of domestic burglary in the last year. Check your window locking systems Where windows have been fitted with locks normally on the ground floor and those easily reached by climbing, make sure you use them. If you own a home built in the last ten years your windows may lock automatically at the press of a button and require a key to be opened – always ensure that any keys can easily be located. Rely on your doors It is important to have robust locks on both the front and back doors, as well as a spy hole to check on callers, a door opening limiter and hinge bolts on outward opening doors. Newer properties may already have these installed. Consider a light sensor… Crime can be prevented by external detection security lighting that switches on after dark when someone is nearby, illuminating the general area. This allows both you and a neighbour to see a possible intrusion. Try to make your home look occupied! Leave the lights on in the evening, perhaps invest in a timer Remember to cancel papers, milk and other deliveries before going away Ask your neighbour to keep an eye on your home. Keep valuable and easily transportable items out of view. The temptation may prove too much for a passing burglar. Hide small valuable items like jewellery For more information please visit www.nhbc.co.uk/Homeowners/Guidanceandadvice

Pulborough beat Tarring to top the league Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC Another busy week for Pulborough BC comprised of 2 league fixtures and a friendly, with all eyes firmly fixed on the game against Tarring Priory who held the top spot going into the game. An away game in the Brookes Motors League against Hotham finished just as the sun was setting over the sea at Bognor where three triples played in two league games and a friendly. Skip Mick Ralph’s team left the opposition in their wake winning all but five ends and finishing with an impressive 25/5 top rink. Malcolm Gray and team put up a fight, but the end score was against them at 20/16. The friendly rink, skipped by Mick Ayling finished 24/11 ahead. 4 league points ensures Pulborough keep their position in the league with just one game against Southbourne still to play. A home friendly against Fishbourne saw a mixed bag of results. Top rink for Pulborough went to

Storrington battle for points as season ends Bowls John Wharmby - Storrington BC Every league match now takes on increasing importance as teams try to improve or maintain their league table position. This was no exception for Storrington, visiting Worthing twice. Paul Leatherbarrow’s team had a slow start but methodically pulled ahead to win easily, 26 – 12, while Tony Gledhill’s team managed to pull ahead during the second half of the game to win by 5 shots. Howard White’s team also seemed to have the game under control, drawing 15 all after the 17th end. However their game then fell apart, finishing down, 15 – 24. The match, however,
was virtually lost by Ian Younger and his team with an abysmal score of 5 – 25, leaving Storrington down by 10 shots, giving them only 4 league points. Peter Smith, Neil Tewsley, Harry Kendall & Paul Leatherbarrow won 26-12 David Bain, Alan Head, Chris Walter & Tony Gledhill won 20-15 P. Monk, Don Barber, John Rimmer & Howard White lost 15-24 Geoff Page, Brian Bona, Gerry Newman & Ian Younger lost 5-25 Storrington 66 - 76 Worthing League Points 4-6. Three days after the Worthing league match, Storrington again visited Worthing, this time to Field Place BC for the next league match.
Again the poor green condition (reflecting the Council’s lack of interest in bowling) was not to Storrington’s liking with the 3 good skippers – Leatherbarrow, Ogley and White – all finding the rinks unacceptable. David Ogley’s team lost by 13 shots; Paul Leatherbarrow’s team lost by 8 shots and Howard White’s team had to fight to maintain a loss by 5 shots. Peter Newman’s team was the only one to be able to cope with the Green conditions, winning by 2 shots. This left Storrington with a match loss by 24 shots and only 2 of the 10 league points available, leaving them in a poor league table position. Field Place 80 – 56 Storrington League points 2-8
Roffey bow out of National Cup in hard fought clash cricket
Martin Read – Sports Reporter
England & Wales Cricket Board National Club Championship National Quarter Final – Roffey v Bath Bath 221-9 (45 overs) Roffey 197 All Out (44.4 overs) Bath won by 24 runs After inserting Bath in front of a sizeable crowd Roffey contained the visitors for long periods but the target proved too much in the face of tight bowling and fielding. Bath started briskly but were pegged back when they were reduced to 40-3. Roffey subsequently made regular inroads, Leigh Harrison, George Fleming, Alex Collins and Dan Smith taking two wickets each. But they were unable to dismiss Sebastian Benton early enough and after holding the innings together he eventually cut loose carrying his
side to 221 with an impressive 98. Bath had not posted a killer score but the accuracy of their bowling and tightness of their fielding – two lapses apart – kept Roffey in check. Theo Rivers made 47 but from 106-6 in the 30th over an up-hill struggle was in prospect. However when Rohit Jagota (59) and Matt Davies (20) were batting together the run rate accelerated – until they were out off consecutive deliveries, victory becoming a bridge too far despite an enterprising 28 from Dan Smith. Bath - young and lively (the umpires warned their wicketkeeper for over- exuberant behaviour) - are currently second in the West of England Premier League and have been runners up in three national finals. Acknowledging that Bath were the better side on the day, captain Josh Fleming said: “We played well and I can’t fault our effort so we’re very disappointed but no complaints, Bath bowled brilliantly first up. They’re a massive club compared with us and are clearly a very useful side.” Scorecard link - http://www.to-

Skip Len Adsett’s team after consistent scoring saw them ahead from the first end to finish 18/12 in the positive. Ivan Salmon and team won 20/16 so with two wins and two losses out of four rinks, the overall score was tight, but Fishbourne just sneaked the win by 6 points, 69/75. The hotly anticipated home game against top of the league Tarring Priory on Sunday under the burning sun saw many a temper flare as Pulborough set about dismantling the game of the opposition. Four rinks played with Pulborough ahead on all rinks by half way. Len Adsett and team pinned their opposite numbers on just 1 shot for the first 13 ends, only allowing them to score when they were sure of victory 20/9. John Brown and team also didn’t disappoint at 28/15. Matt Ives and team had a tougher job with Tarring fighting back from 17/10 down to finish with a draw at 18 points each. The final result was 96/54 to Pulborough and 9 valuable league points putting them ahead of Tarring in top spot with one game left to play.

but after two early reverses Hurst got to 91-2 from which Danny, notably supported by Tom Nightingale, cruised home with almost half of their overs unused. Danny told the District Post: “At tea I thought that if I could get fifty then we should win!” Captain Ben Williams added: “The wicket was Ph ot fair for both sides – it turned, o by but as Danny proved, it wasn’t unplayable. It was great to watch Will Fazackerly’s bowling too – he really put it in good areas.” Tomorrow, Saturday August 15, Billingshurst, now sixth, host Middleton (in dire need of a win to avoid relegation). Pre-season Billingshurst felt that six wins – which they now have would ensure continuation in the Premier League. They are almost certainly safe but if they continue playing in the same vein further successes will surely follow. partScorecard link - http://sussexcl. nerships. Despite batting frailty Brighton elected to have first dig but posted an inadequate total, Billingshurst securing a 30 point win without undue difficulty, after previously beating Brighton in the away encounter. The man of the match award was a no contest affair – Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi taking 5-26 before coming in at number three and notching up an unbeaten 92. But, although Danny was outstanding, this was a genuine team win for Hurst. Sussex Academy player Will Fazackerly took early wickets with a challenging 3-41, setting the scene for Danny and captain Ben Williams (2-57) to deliver another lengthy spell in tandem after Andy Barr was unable to continue bowling because of a
side strain. Brighton appeared reasonably well placed on 105-4 but, even with the presence of impressive Sussex second XI’s Sam Grant and Philip Salt, were unable to put together sufficiently telling

League newcomers Middleton have impressive facilities and a line up including leading batsman Sean Heather and productive all-rounder Joffra Archer but are struggling to stay in the top flight despite beating the hapless Sussex Development XI on Sunday. With Sussex’s Will Beer (39) opening the batting Horsham’s first wicket put on 50 but on 92-5 alarm bells rang – until overseas signing Kevin Stoute’s unbeaten 115 – the 29 year old Barbadian’s maiden century for Horsham - including 11 fours and 4 sixes and a run a ball 60 not out from John Burroughs (JB) fired an unbroken 163 run partnership. Replying, Middleton reached the dizzy heights of 96-2 but then crashed to 109-7, four wickets going down for one run in seven balls, Will Beer narrowly missing a hat trick and Kevin Stoute pouching three
good catches. With Michael Munday taking 4-66 and Beer 4-49, bowling 23 overs between them, spectators were treated to the very rare sight of two quality leg spinners bowling in tandem, their expertise proving well beyond Middleton’s capability. Will Beer said: “It spun a lot!” while Kevin Stoute confirmed: “The wicket was definitely doing a bit so I needed to make sure I was in before starting to play shots. JB batted re-

Roffey chase down 279 Bhujun helps Heath Saturday August 8 - Sussex Premier League Eastbourne 278 All Out (57.1 overs) Roffey 279-7 (50.1overs) Roffey won by 3 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey bounced back restoring their title aspirations by chasing down a sizeable Eastbourne target, the 30 point win moving them up to third on 321, two points behind second placed Preston Nomads. After another crushing victory East Grinstead are top with 347 points but Roffey have a game in hand. Winning the toss Roffey put in struggling Eastbourne and had an early success but on one of groundsman Drew Smallwood’s belting wickets – producing 557 runs in an afternoon - the visitor’s impressive batting line up made hay, Sussex’s Callum Jackson making 56 and county academy player Delray Rawlins 47. At 173-6 Roffey had hopes
of polishing off the tail but despite 4-77 from Ben Manenti and 3-69 from George Fleming Eastbourne set a stiff target that many teams would have found too daunting. A good platform was created, Josh Fleming, Theo Rivers, Usman Khan and Ben Manenti all making useful contributions yet Roffey needed to tap into their all-round resources when they found themselves still 69 adrift with seven wickets down. But, Mike Norris with 79 and George Fleming, 52, both unbeaten, saw Roffey home with 11 balls to spare, George saying: “It was a really good wicket so I just went out there and batted to see what happened.” Mike Norris added: “George batted brilliantly, taking the pressure off me!” With the race for the title still wide open tomorrow (Saturday August 15) Roffey visit this season’s surprise package – Bexhill (currently fourth on 302). referee pointed to the spot and club captain Joe Shelley calmly put the penalty out of the reach of ‘keeper Wickwar to leave the sides all square at the break. As in the first half the Hassocks striker Jamie Hillwood continued to create problems with his pace and energy but it was the visitors who had the best of the play and the chances in the second period. Kevin Keehan made the Hassocks keeper pull of a good stop and Mark Knee hit the bar with a mishit effort but the winner just wouldn’t come. Di Paola sent on Bradley Lewis, Samir Hadi and Adam Hunt to try and change things and Lewis and Hadi both had good efforts on goal; Hadi really should have scored after following up a Shelley header. Hassocks played well and put in a well disciplined and organised performance but there will be tougher opposition to come and the new look Hornets will need to find the net, especially during periods of dominance like they experienced in this match. Goalscorers: Horsham Shelley (32) Hassocks Miles (4) Horsham Team: Williams, Duncan (Hunt 78), Jones, Farmer, Knee, Keehan (Lewis 70), Shelley, Clarke, Pamment (Hadi 77), Murfin, Boswell. A goal from last season’s top scorer Ollie Moore, and two from Merv Bhujun, gave Steve Painters side a winning start to the season away at Wick & Barnham. In a match that ‘Heath totally bossed the only slight moan was that they could have won even more convincingly than the final 0 – 3 score line. The normally efficient Tiago Andrade blasted over from a few yards out early on and two goal Bhujun could have at least doubled his personal tally for the game after finding himself in prime scoring positions on a number of occasions. The deadlock was however finally broken when Moore’s shot from distance went in off the post leaving the home keeper helpless. Tim Martin was then bundled over for what looked a certain penalty but the referee waved aside the loud appeals. A more realistic balance between the score line and possession was made just before the break when good play from Mark Bevan and Tim Martin allowed Bhujun
to sneak in at the far post to score from close range, sending ‘Heath in 2-0 up at half time. The second half produced little relief for the home side as ‘Heath continued to dominate. The third and final goal came in the 69th minute when Bevan and Bhujun combined before Bhujun slammed the ball high into the roof of the net. Painter introduced Kieron Purkis with 15 minutes remaining giving him his first outing in a ‘Heath shirt since being injured a year ago at Dorking. After the game a smiling Painter said “I was absolutely delighted with the team’s performance, especially that of Stuart Chester at centre-back and Rob Godfrey in midfield. I thought we dominated for long periods and should probably have scored a few more but there is a long way to go and with Horsham and Pagham our next two away games it was important that we got something out of this game”. Horsham go into this season as favourites to win this division, in the eyes of most of those ‘in the know’ at least. The Hornets fans must also have great expectations following Dom Di Paola’s total rebuilding of the squad following last year’s disastrous performances. However the Hornets were held by Hassocks, who flirted with relegation for a while last season before finishing fifteenth, Joe Shelley equalising Hassocks early opener on the half hour. It took only four minutes of life at this lower level for Hassocks to remind Horsham that this season is not going to be straight forward when the host’s Nathan Miles collected a long free kick and turned neatly to hammer a fierce shot past Hornets ‘keeper Gareth Williams. After the early opener Di Paola’s easy on the eye style of football was evident with Horsham playing some lovely passing moves that led to them dominating

Big crowd see Hornets put three past Heath Tuesday August 11- SCFL Premier Division Horsham 3 – 0 Broadbridge Heath Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor The biggest crowd for nearly three years - the attendance being 335 - saw Horsham secure their first win of the new season in what was the first ever competitive match between the two clubs. A first half goal from Kieron Pamment followed by two in the second half from Mark Knee and Samir Hadi with no reply from ‘Heath was enough to give Horsham all three points in what was a lively and entertaining match. Horsham boss Dom Di Paola was forced into one change from the draw at Hassocks on opening day, Adam Hunt coming in for the injured Keehan. Steve Painter made three changes from ‘Heath’s win at Wick, Jamie Robinson, Dan Attwater and Andy Waddington starting in place of Bevan, Balfour and Wragg. The game was played at a fast pace with Pamment for Horsham showing early quick runs and forcing Chester in the visitor’s goal into
a smart save. At the other end Bhujun made a breakaway at pace but instead of taking the more likely option of shooting he tried to find teammate Martin and the chance went begging. Boswell and Shelley both had good attempts to no avail but the opener was not long in coming however, the lively Pamment putting the Hornets ahead in the 22nd minute. Horsham keeper Williams pulled off a good stop just before half time from an Ollie Moore effort ensuring his side kept the single goal advantage going into the break. It took just 14 minutes of the second period for Horsham to double the lead when a fierce free kick from Knee found the bottom corner of ‘keeper Chester’s goal. The game was wrapped up in the 82nd minute when ‘Heath keeper Stuart Chester made a great stop from substitute Samir Hadi only to see the Horsham midfielder follow up the rebound and tuck the ball away for 3 – 0. Horsham, most people’s favourites for the league title, will no doubt push on from here while ‘Heath, playing only their second season at this level, will take a lot of

An early Sam Schaaf strike and a brace from Nick Sullivan saw Horsham YMCA secure their second win in four days with a salient 3-1 win over Loxwood on Tuesday evening. YM manager Peter Buckland commented: “I think we have turned a major corner. I do not believe last season that we would have got anything out of tonight’s game. That’s what continuity and a bit of discipline in your shape brings you. I can absolutely guarantee that a lot of teams will come away from here with nothing other than a slapped backside, so it is a good fixture to get out of the way and a good win.” YM Striker Schaaf profited from a fortunate ricochet before neatly netting his fourth goal in two starts after just six minutes. The visitors doubled their advantage as Sullivan half volleyed home from fifteen yards, before an extraordinary
few minutes of added time then followed. Buckland’s side spurned the chance to make it 3-0 when Sullivan and Wright

Schaaf hatrick helps YM to perfect start Saturday August 8 - SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 7 – 0 St Francis Rangers Football Tom Norris - Horsham YMCA Horsham YMCA kicked off the new Southern Combination Football League season in style on Saturday, as they smashed St Francis Rangers 7-0 at Gorings Mead. A hatrick from striker Sam Schaaf and further efforts from Luke Gedling, Dave Brown, Dan Sullivan and debutant Dean Wright meant that Peter Buckland’s side sat top of the newly named Premier Division after the opening weekend of fixtures. A delighted YM manager commented: “It was a good start. It’s an old phrase, but you can only beat what’s in front of you. They were a good set of youthful lads from St Francis, with honest endeavour, but if you don’t put teams like that to the sword with your experience and passing and moving early doors, then they can creep into a game.” When YM midfielder Gedling curled in an exquisite twenty-five yard free kick after just nine min-
utes, spectators at Gorings Mead must have sensed a rout was on the cards. Schaaf doubled the hosts’ advantage midway through the first period with a stunning swivel and volley, before three goals in five minutes from Brown, Sullivan and Wright made it 5-0 shortly before half time. Front man Schaaf completed his hatrick after the break with two goals in quick succession, first latching onto a Dan Sullivan pass before sidestepping Rangers’ stopper Mateusz Slafranski to coolly tap home, and then again rounding the ‘keeper before neatly finishing eight minutes later. Buckland added: “There just wasn’t a weakness on the park. The players were really up for it and that is the message this season. We’ve got to turn up for every single game and the players have all got to come off as individuals and say that they did their bit.” Golscorers: Gedling (9) Schaaf (25, 55, 63) D. Brown (34) D.
