Prewetts Mill in Worthing Road, Horsham, which was built in 1861, has been proposed for redevelopment by retirement property developers McCarthy & Stone. The proposal is to redevelop the site with high-quality apartments, specifically designed to meet the needs of people in later life. This week, McCarthy & Stone told The District Post local residents have an opportunity to comment on plans for new homes at the Prewetts Mill site. The proposals will be shared at a public exhibition on Thursday, November 20, at the Drill Hall, Denne Road, Horsham, between 3.30pm and 7pm. The site was omitted from the local list of buildings of historic interest by Horsham District Council and John Steele, a member of the Horsham Society, said it was the society that made the decision when the council asked them to produce the list. John told The District Post: “At the public consultation, no residents suggested adding the site to the list, and that was the time to. People seem to have not thought about it until now. It seems the building is largely forgotten other than by local residents. It is part of historic Horsham but now it’s just a shell. “The society can’t make up their minds until they see the final plans. We will have a firm view then but

the consultation plans were a little unexciting. It would be good to get the site used again as it’s one of the entry points into Horsham. I would like some continuity such as keeping Prewetts in the new name.” In a press release, McCarthy & Stone said it has carefully considered the designs to integrate the site with the surrounding area, and that a priority has been placed on improving landscaping, the street frontage along Worthing Road, the River Arun footpath, and enlarging the civic space. A representative of McCarthy & Stone said: “We’ve spent time carefully researching the architecture and character of Worthing Road, but we need to ensure that what we build is what our customers, as well as the local community, would like to see in Horsham. “To ensure the local community has been kept informed of the pro-

posals, McCarthy & Stone held a series of individual meetings with immediate residents and stakeholders at the Horsham Unitarian Church. It was a good opportunity to ask questions about the proposed development on a one to one basis. “Our project team will be at the forthcoming exhibition to answer questions and listen to feedback on what we’ve done so far. The comments we receive will help us tailor our proposals into something people will want to see, enjoy and call home.” If you are not able to attend the public exhibition or would like further information, McCarthy & Stone has provided a dedicated freephone information line on 0800 298 7040 and will set up a website covering their initial proposals which can be found at www.mccarthyandstoneconsultation.co.uk/PrewettsMill, which will go live nearer the time.

Burglars steal watches after Horsham break-ins Police are investigating the theft of 25 wristwatches, two of which are distinctive, from a private property in Farhalls Crescent, Horsham. The burglary is thought to have occurred between Saturday (1 November) and Sunday (2 November). Thieves smashed a window in a rear door to get in before making an untidy search and stealing the watches. One was a World War Two watch given to lower ranks, crudely fashioned from base metal and with a cloth strap, and another was a yellow metal watch with a dark red face and digital display. It was issued by the Howard Hughes corporation. Detectives are appealing for help from anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious at the scene, or who may be offered some of the stolen items. The value of the watches is not known. Anyone with information is asked to email 101@sussex.pnn. police.uk or phone 101, quoting serial 486 of 2/11. On Friday, October 17, Millais Student Cara Exall became the founder president of “The Interact Club of Millais Horsham” at a formal chartering event held at the school. Interact is a service club for young people ages 12 to 18 and is a part of Rotary International and the Millais club is sponsored by The Rotary Club of Horsham. The objective of Interact is to bring young people together to collaborate on local and international projects. Its members must demonstrate commitment to good citizenship and international understanding, whilst they fundraise and campaign together. Francis Maude MP, Horsham District Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Horsham Town, Cllr Helena Croft, Councillor Jim Rae and a number of Horsham Rotarians were all present to witness the official presentation of the Charter Certificate to Cara by the Rotary District Governor Doug Price. Cara (15) said: “As Millais Students we are excited to have this enriching opportunity for ourselves and are looking forward to representing our school in the wider local, national and international community. “Our Interact club is the first to be founded in Horsham and we are all excited by its prospects. Already we have decided to support both Oxfam and St. Catherine’s Hospice through our fundraising and campaigning over the next school year.

School kilns. The poppies were planted in St. Peter’s churchyard, and the oldest and youngest pupils planted the first ones. Mrs Hine added: “ We’re hoping to auction them off as parents and villagers have expressed interest in owning them, with proceeds going to the Royal British Legion. It’s really brought the whole community together.” Laura Braun said: “It has been a really big project. It was quite emotional to see it all being brought together. “Seeing the poppies makes it clear how many have died. We are hoping the poppies will remain there until Christmas. The children didn’t write names on the back of each poppy as it was not about them and the school, but the people who have died.”

Young people work together on local and international projects

Pupils at Slinfold Primary School have been making their own ceramic poppies after being inspired by the poppy display at the Tower of London. The project has seen involvement from the whole village community including the beavers, cubs, scouts, parents and local church groups. The project was the idea of year five and six teacher, Laura Braun who was inspired by Paul Cummins’ display in London. Headteacher, Mrs Jill Hine told The District Post: “Laura trained everyone in the school on how to make the poppies. It’s been a real labour of love for Laura.” The ceramic poppies were fired in Laura’s home kiln and at The Weald School and Rudgwick

The First Remembrance Day in Horsham and the nation horsham museum www.horshammuseum.org

From Volume 5 History of Horsham 1919-1839 – available from Horsham museum at £15 In November the nation and the town had to work out how or if it was to commemorate the end of The Great War. There was no precedence, Peace had been celebrated with Peace Day in July, now on the anniversary of the armistice, what? The Parish Newsletter set the scene in their November issue stating “The Anniversary of Armistice Day (Tuesday, Nov. 11) We propose to keep this say - S. Martin’s Day - as a regular anniversary. We believe that everybody will be glad to remember the desire of their hearts to sing praises to God on this day 12 months ago. For once we forgot to conceal or be shy about our religion…At 12 0 clock we shall have as last year, a short Service of praise and thanksgiving; at 7.45 p.m. we shall have a Service, as last year, at which Archdeacon Southwell, C.M.G., an Assistant Chaplain General in the War …will be preacher…” The Newsletter went on to tell the congregation that “the general community has decided to erect a memorial on the site of the present temporary memorial. It will take the form of an enlargement and enrichment of the present one.” It also related how St Mary’s Church would have its own memorial, with names on panels “complimentary to the memorial in the Carfax” which at that time would not have names. Interestingly considering the controversy that would occur later the names were on a list by the Church door with a box underneath “in which may be placed any alterations or additions to make the list full and accurate” along with the name and address of the proposer for reference. A month later the December issue contained a deeply felt account by Ralph Frost of “The Great Silence in London”, the extract below gives just a flavour of the feeling of the event: “In the bitterest moments of

Christ’s life, it was His custom to leave His disciples, and seek solitude and silence. This was the underlying thought that prompted the King’s wish that his people should commune for a brief moment with their own souls, and so draw nearer to things eternal…There were no cynics and no scoffers. In this great city, with its teeming millions, there were none who did not do reverent homage to those who have paid in full the measure of their love and patriotism…” As for Horsham town itself the County Times for November 15, carried the following report. “Armistice Day anniversary was reverently celebrated at Horsham, first by two minuets pause at the eleventh hour, and subsequently by church and chapel services. The Carfax cenotaph was the centre of a touching ceremonial. immediately the clock ceased striking four buglers from the Royal Engineers at Roffey Camp (with a corporal in charge) sounded the “Stand Fast” for the prescribed two minuets there was an impressive silence, except for the prolonged whistling in the distance of a train on the railway. Men stood reverently with bared heads, and there was a remarkable absence of all movement. Then the buglers sounded the “Last Post,” and the rev. Godfrey wells, assistant curate at the Parish church, who stood on the left of the cenotaph, led the gathering in the Lord’s Prayer, followed by prayers for the afflicted, “especially the widows and orphans of the fallen,” and or comrades who died that we might live.”

Horsham’s Christmas Cracker Charity Market Horsham Rotary Club, in conjunction with Horsham District Council and Horsham Markets are organising their annual Christmas Market for charities in the Carfax, Horsham, on Sunday, November 30. The market takes place from 10am - 4pm, full details are still being organised but if you would like to register for a table you can email horshamrotary@btconnect.com. The number of tables is limited and they are offered on the basis of one table per organisation and on a strictly first come, first served basis. Horsham Markets will be running their first Sunday Christmas market alongside the Charity Market.

…The body of the Parish Church was well- fitted for the 12 o’clock service, conducted by the Vicar (Rev. Morley Headlam) from the pulpit…(the address ) It is quite possible that in all our minds, aid the Vicar, there was a feeling of disappointment in regard to the history of the world and of our own country since the signing of the armistice twelve months ago. Did we expect and hope that everyone in the world, or everyone in our own nation, would turn directly to the building up again of our nation’s life? We had learnt during these last twelve months how deep-seated were the powers of selfishness in the human heart, and how great was the temptation to relax in the life of service. The prevalent unrest and great improvements towards the acquirement of material things were disappointing…” continuing in a reflective mood. Next to the article was an appeal for funds to build a “permanent memorial to the men of the ancient Parish of Horsham be on the site of the present temporary memorial in the Carfax.” The full story of Horsham’s War memorial is told in Volume 4.

Wellbeing team raise men’s health awareness

T

he Horsham District Wellbeing team are running a series of events to support the ‘Movember’ campaign, and change the face of men’s health through providing knowledge to aid prevention and early detection for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health issues. It has been highlighted that men are at higher risk of developing disease, by not openly discussing their health, reluctance in taking action because they don’t feel ill, engaging in higher risk activities which threaten their health, and due to the stigmas around certain health problems. The statistics are alarming and should not be ignored. Witchcraft in the Sussex countryside

CCTV is not a comfort if it doesn’t serve us nik butler @loudmouthman

T

neil arnold Sussex folklore

Where would the autumnal season be without the mention of witches and witchcraft – indeed, the practice of witchcraft is such a misunderstood exercise usually resulting in mass panics where over the years villagers have fled in terror from reputedly warty old hags. Townsfolk, in their sheer ignorance and horror have also been known to persecute such unfortunate victims; at first never understanding the worship of nature and secondly prompting authorities to drag such ‘witches’ to local ponds for drowning or even fires upon which their corpses are burnt to a crisp. It’s no wonder that due to such ignorance that over the years we’ve painted the image of the witch as one to be greatly feared as they traverse the sky on gnarly broomsticks and allegedly cast spells on those who disbelieve. In January 2010 ‘witchcraft’ was blamed after “…at least ten horse owners in Sussex (had) reported finding plaits in their horses’ manes over the last two months.” The report, written by a crime reporter named Ben Parson, added that the “mysterious plaits in horses’ manes had left police baffled” to the extent that a white witch named Kevin Carylon, who resides in Hastings, contacted a local newspaper to state that the plaiting was sometimes done “to precede ritual mutilation of horses in black magic” although there was no evidence to support this. Strangely, this type of plaiting has been reported for many years but police claimed that in relation to Sussex they had received reports from as far and wide as East Grinstead and Chichester yet with no mentions of horses being harmed. Plaiting is often said to naturally occur during strong winds where the hair of the horses mane tangles and yet centuries ago it was believed that witches were responsible for such practices; with some fear mongers believing that certain horses had been targeted by witches who during the dead of night would mount the horse in question and take off into the darkness. Over the years this legend has evolved with some people claiming that by plaiting the horses manes, gypsies could identify certain individuals and then return and steal them. Again, this has never been proven. However, Mr Carylon seemed to confuse the issue even more concluding that the looser plaiting was simply done under what is deemed as “beneficial witchcraft” and yet “with more complex, tightly knitted plaits you’re looking down the darker side…” Of course, such theories did lit-

tle to help the panic although in the past some horses have been found soaked in blood or harbouring serious injuries as if they have been accosted by sick assailants during the night eager to cause harm to the animals. However, some owners believe that the reason the horses end up covered in blood is because the naturally formed tangles are in fact caught on wiry fences hence ripping at the fur and flesh. It’s rather sad to think that up until just a few decades ago people in Sussex were still living in fear of local witches in spite of the fact that in 1736 the Witchcraft Act enforced by Parliament dismissed any notion of such allegedly harmful practices. East Grinstead featured heavily in regards to witchcraft back in the sixteenth century when an Agnes Mowser was convicted of ‘bewitching’ one Ann Flemens; sadly some

victims purported to be witches had simply been accused to their involvement with a familiar – i.e. an animal such as a black cat, or a toad so God help any woman especially who some four or so centuries ago liked to keep pets! At the Stag Inn in Hastings it has been suggested that witchcraft was once rife after two mummified cats were unearthed in the 1800s. It’s more than likely they were simply pets buried within the walls, or animals which had become trapped within a cavity and suffocated by the chimney smoke or carcasses placed in a fireplace to ward off evil spirits. A witch named Hannah Clarke was said to have put the cats in the chimney in the seventeenth-century by way of deterring the plague. The two ghastly smoke-stained creatures can still be seen – presented in a frame upon the wall of the old inn!

here is a phrase whose acknowledgement is for many merely the background noise to their daily routine. It goes something like this “For your comfort and security CCTV cameras have been provided; please report any suspicious behavior or unexpected baggage.” The mantra is repeated in public areas, and in public transport, and has become synonymous with safety. I am unsure how CCTV cameras operated remotely recording unwittingly are able to ensure my comfort. It’s not like I spent much time attempting to sit atop cameras and security domes and I am pretty sure there will be no end of year DFS sale in 4 seater luxury reclining security cameras. As for security it seems that the idea of CCTV in public spaces operates more as an after the fact exercise than a deterrent. Additionally when signs are posted advertising that CCTV is in operation and yet there are no cameras in evidence are the public not left with an altogether false sense of security or comfort? The recent vandalism of car wing mirrors along Rusper road

serves to highlight the continuing problem we experience with CCTV and the comfort and security which we are promised daily. Privately owned CCTV outnumber state managed systems by factor of 70 to 1 and with many more cameras now becoming internet enabled a new world of public observation is created. Many will argue, quite correctly, that we need an increase in the availability and presence of the Police. None however will agree to grasp the nettle of significant increasing costs through council tax which would be required to pay for such opportunities. We need to find new ways of creating a community that provides the comfort and security without the fear based rhetoric that ‘if you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to fear’ in being observed. The long term cost in vandalism of property public or private carries into all of our lives as we pay in premiums what we failed to invest in ourselves or our communities. It may feel like a simple answer to install more cameras and add more recordings, but it is all for nothing if they provide no useful information when answers are sought. Long term it seems clear that if public CCTV is offering nothing more than news bite voyeurism then we may need to ask just whose safety and security we are paying for.

Don’t overlook the importance of a will Could your business benefit from an apprenticeship

R

ment will receive nearly £6bn from inheritance tax, which it said can be hugely reduced by drafting a will and careful planning. Sue Tipper of Crawley based solicitors, stevensdrake, added: “The importance of having a will is all too often over-looked, dare I say it, it’s a case of mañana for many. If people realised the consequences for loved ones of dying without a will in place, I believe attitudes would be very different. Also, in worst case scenarios, who wants hard-earned money to go to the Government

ipp Sue T

er

esearch by the Law Society has revealed that 73% of 16-54 year olds do not have a will and only 64% of people aged over 55 have a written will. The research also highlighted the fact that 23% of respondents incorrectly believed that without a will, their possessions would automatically go to their loved ones. This is not necessarily the case . As a result of this mind-set over £8m went to the government. Andrew Caplen, president of the Law Society, voiced his concerns at the figures: “Thousands of people die every year without making a will or without a properly drafted will. These figures show just how bad the problem is. The Society also estimates that by 2018, the govern-

when they die?” Sue added: “Creating a will needn’t be a daunting process. It’s very straight-forward to create a simple will, providing clear instruction to the powers that be on your passing. Of course, there are more complicated wills, but for the majority of people, we can provide a simple, easy to understand, but effective will, for a small outlay and peace of mind.” For more information on how to make your will, or to make an appointment, contact Sue on 01293 596908.

There are two months left to apply under the existing criteria for an apprenticeship grant. The Apprenticeship Grant for employers of 16 to 24 year-olds supports businesses that would not otherwise be in a position to do so. Up until December 2014, you can receive up to 10 grants in total, each one is worth £1,500. Jane Bell, Clinic Nurse Director for Sussex Travel Clinic in Worthing, said: “Having the grant has enabled us to employ three apprentices. “It has given us the opportunity to develop the business and has been a good and positive experience for everyone involved.”

From January 2015 the eligibility criteria for employers to apply for apprenticeship grants will change. The grant will be on offer to employers with less than 50 employees and you will be able to receive up to five grants in total, subject to eligibility and availability. The grant has already helped thousands of employers to grow their business by employing an apprentice. Could it help you too? Employers and providers should refer to the latest employer fact sheet about AGE at www.apprenticeships.org.uk, which references the changes to the programme from January 2015.

Horsham author’s Julie Walters to award book really is a ‘source prizes at The Capitol of understanding’ Charlotte Schroeter Entertainment Reporter Having previously met and interviewed the author of Living with Arabs, Joan Ward, I was intrigued to read her story of the nine years she spent living in Jordan. She told me parts of the story which made me want to read the book even more. In the book, Joan explains her journey from visiting the country on holiday, to deciding to move there as she felt a connection with the country. She moved to Amman and spent two years as the head of English at the International Community School before moving to Petra when she retired after many weekends spent there in the mountains. Along the way, Joan tells of the many people she met, the friends she made, the trust and respect she gained, and the times she killed a snake, was stung by a scorpion, and broke her collar bone. A clear theme in the book is the difference between the way men and women are treated in the country, and although I was aware of this previously, it really opened my eyes to how life is from someone who experienced it first-hand. The gender imbalance and the significance of Islam are seen throughout the book. I was shocked at some of what I read but at times I also felt myself smiling and laughing at anecdotes Joan shares. At times I could almost

feel what she was feeling as she describes everything in such detail. I also felt I got to know some of the recurring people such as her neighbours Bassam and Fatma, and the donkey Azuz. When reading, Joan shares her thought patterns and how these develop over time. This book does act as a source of understanding – as said on the front cover - that you may not gain unless you visit the country and experience it for yourself. Fiction is my usual preference but this book is a real page turner and I struggled to put it down. I would definitely recommend this book.

The Capitol, Horsham are delighted to announce that Julie Walters CBE will be at the Capitol on Tuesday, November 18, to award the prize winners of a competition for students from The College of Richard Collyer. The competition to design Christmas cards for The Horsham and Crawley branch of Samaritans was launched earlier this year, with the successful designs not only being announced as the winners of the competition, but having them sold by Samaritans Horsham as their Christmas cards for this year and taking pride of place in an exhibition of all the entries due to take place in The Capitol Gallery which commences on November 11. Sue Jago, Director of Samaritans of Horsham & Crawley said: “We have a very positive relationship with the College of Richard Collyer which has been very supportive of all our outreach programmes. We are particularly grateful to Susan McAlister for her help in organising this competition and to her students for their enthusiasm in taking part. The judging panel was hugely impressed by the talent and thoughtfulness that had gone into the designs”. Julie is Patron of Samaritans Horsham and will be attending the awards with the public invited to attend from 3.45pm after which she has offered to stay at The Capitol for an hour or two to help sell the cards. The cards will also be on sale from

The Capitol Box Office from that date and are also on sale in the Horsham Museum Charity Card shop. The message from Samaritans of Horsham and Crawley is that you don’t have to have suicidal thoughts to call them. It doesn’t matter what your worry is. If the weight of something feels huge, then it is. Reluctance to burden loved ones or fear of being judged can lead to emotions being buried. It’s OK to talk to Samaritans about that growing anxiety before it turns to overwhelming despair. But if it does, they’ll be there for that too. At 21 Denne Road, listening volunteers come in around-the-clock for their shifts. Putting their own life experiences aside, they concentrate 100% on each caller. They never know who’s going to call or what they’ll talk about but they are always there so there’s no need to worry about waking them up. For those seeking face-to-face support, they’re open most days between 9am and 9pm (phone to check or go to www.samaritans.org/ branches/samaritans-horshamand-crawley). Callers can also text or email if that’s more comfortable. The Samaritans of Horsham & Crawley want to reach those who may not have considered themselves a Samaritans caller before. Julie Walters CBE is an English actress and writer. She has won two BAFTA Film Awards, four BAFTA TV Awards and received the BAFTA Fellowship in 2014.

Relive Neil Diamond live in concert For the past 20 years, the unique voice and music of Neil Diamond has been portrayed by JJ Jones all over the world, including many years touring Australia and Europe. ‘Hello Again’ is his new UK Theatre show for 2014, consisting of 2 hours of unforgettable music celebrating the song writing genius who has written such enormous hits as Love on the Rocks, Sweet Caroline and Cracklin’ Rosie. Top marks for Billingshurst curry house davey pearson Review: Blue India

Blue India Indian Restaurant recently opened its doors in Billingshurst high street in the beautifully listed premises of what was The Monsoon Restaurant and is already proving popular with the locals. You may or may not have heard of Blue India but as a brand they have been a round for a while, starting out with their first restaurant in Crawley 12 years ago. 2014 has seen not only the launch of their newest restaurant in Billingshurst but they have also scooped the chef of year title at the Curry Life awards. As part of our 18th wedding anniversary my wife and I decided to book a table for the evening to sample a few of their dishes. The restaurant has parking for about four cars and if that’s full Jengers Mead car park is free after

Our mains arrived within seven minutes and we got stuck in. The lamb shank was enormous and cooked very well, the meat slid off the bone and the flavour hadn’t been lost in the spicy/sweet sauce. The Prawn bhuna was apparently very good, however I didn’t really get a look in. Full to the brim we reluctantly ordered our dessert... well not really. For me, a triple chocolate ice cream and for Mrs P the caramel bomb, both delicious and presented very well on the plate, in fact all the dishes that evening were presented well with a touch of class and finesse very seldom seen in local curry houses. Our total bill came to £51.20 which I thought was reasonable considering the portion sizes and course numbers. We found the staff to be friendly, knowledgeable and very attentive, the atmosphere good, and the setting relaxed and cosy. Overall a pleasant evening had by all, no negatives to report and a definite re visit to be planned. Rating: 5/5

Food & Drink Winter Wonders

W is for Winter Fuel There may not be an abundance of colourful fruit and vegetables at this time of year, but the winter larder is far from empty with some of our tastiest vegetables available from local markets and grocers. Even meat can be at it’s best, butchered from animals that have been feeding on pasture during the summer. Don’t be fooled by the promotion of Spring lamb, it’s best much later in the year after the sheep and their offspring have enjoyed life outside. This follows through with beef, free range pork, poultry and game especially. Even local cheese that mature at this time of year is produced from the delicious milk yielded whilst the animals are grazing. We all know that root vegetables are abundant so there’s no reason to stick to just the usual carrots or parsnips, mix these with really tasty beetroot, celeriac or Jerusalem artichokes. There is nothing better on a wintery Sunday than a medley of root vegetables, chopped into large chunks and simply throw in to hot oil to roast with a juicy joint or just

on their own. Of course, this is also the time of year for squashes and they really do come in all colours and sizes. Easier than you might think to prepare and again, great for just roasting or baking in the oven. One of most satisfying and easiest meals for throughout the winter is, of course, soup made from any combination of veg, cheese and meat. All that we used to dread about school meals is also King at this time of year - cabbage. Ruined by cooks years ago, this glorious family of vegetables includes the standard white, red and savoy but also the superfood Kale and, love ‘em or hate ‘em the Brussels sprout - a perfect cabbage in miniature that should not be just for Christmas. The key to all the brassica’s is not to cook the life out of them, Keep them crunchy and add in sweetness such as honey, sourness with balsamic vinegar or soy sauce and other ingredients including crispy bacon, nuts or even fruits. The winter will soon become a welcome friend bringing food bursting with flavour. For the A-Z of Real Food visit www.horshammarkets.co.uk.

Sprouts - your genes can dictate whether you love or hate sprouts as a certain gene causes a reaction to the bitterness. Beef - the best is sourced from cattle feeding predominately on grass through the spring and summer and then aged for a minimum of 30 days. Cheese - one of the finest local cheeses, Norbury Blue, is always at it’s best once matured in the winter due to the rich meadowland the herd grazes on. Jerusalem artichoke - is neither an artichoke nor from Israel but is a tuber from a plant with bright yellow flowers. It is does, however, taste a little like an artichoke heart and the name is thought to come from the Italian word ‘girasole’ meaning sunflower. Winter hunger - is experienced by many of us and theories abound including a primeval reaction to store up food and fat reserves or that the decrease in sunlight increases the appetite but just as likely is that we simply need more fuel to stay warm. Soup - goes right back to 20,000 BC and beyond but, in more recent times, the word comes from ‘suppa’ or ‘sop’ which was the bread used to soak up broth. Seasonal meats, vegetables and cheeses are always available from the Local Produce Market in the Carfax and from specialist local shops.

Simple Rocky Road for the family Kim Cook The Steyning Tea Rooms This is the second monthly recipe column written by Kim Cook, owner of The Steyning Tea Rooms. Each month we will be featuring a different recipe which you can make at home, or try at the tea rooms. It may seem premature, but here at the Steyning Tea Rooms we have been thinking about Christmas for quite a while. Our Christmas cakes were made back in September and have been basted in brandy every week since! We like nice simple Christmas recipes that can be enjoyed by the whole family and rocky road is one of our favourites. The best thing about it is that you can add in whatever you like! Sultanas, sweets, popping candy, maltesers, anything really. We like to keep ours simple with just crushed biscuits and mini marshmallows. Festive Rocky Road Ingredients: • 600g chocolate – we use half milk, half dark but use whatever combination you prefer. • Approx 10 digestive biscuits crushed • 2 handfuls of mini marshmallows • White chocolate stars and edible glitter to finish! Method: • Melt the chocolate in a bowl over a saucepan of hot water. (You can microwave, but chocolate burns easily so we recommend using a bowl over hot water. If you micro-

wave, do it on low power and stir every 20 seconds) Grease and line a 2lb loaf tin with baking paper Once the chocolate has melted, mix in the biscuits and marshmallows or whatever treats you are using. Spoon into the loaf tin, top with white chocolate stars, edible glitter, any other festive delights that take your fancy and chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours before slicing. Enjoy!

What’s Inside

To sell or not to sell before Christmas?

Lettings

Kathy Taylor

Horsham Branch Manager kathytaylor@leaders.co.uk

Throughout 2014 demand for property in Horsham has been strong and the result is a very buoyant sales and lettings market. High rental demand has led to an increase in investor landlords buying properties to rent out, and

thanks to improved lending options, sales have also increased to first-time buyers and families looking to climb the ladder. So, with Christmas just around the corner, how is the property market likely to be affected? Any holiday season will have an impact on the number of buyers actively looking for property as their focus is naturally drawn elsewhere. As a result, sellers often choose to wait until the new year to put their property on the

sales market. However, acting earlier has some distinct benefits. For a start you will have less competition, so those savvy buyers who want to secure their next home before the January rush will be more interested in your property if it is one of just a few. In addition, if you are selling in order to buy your next home, then finding a buyer before Christmas can put you in a better position when you are searching yourself

in January. If you have a buyer secured you will be ready and able to make an offer as soon as you find your ideal property and will be in a strong position to proceed. There’s no reason to wait for the January rush –get ahead of the crowd by putting your property on the market before the Christmas season hits. If you are thinking of selling and want to know how we can help you succeed, contact us today on 01403 217585 or visit www.leaders.co.uk.

t Dulwich College, Horsham went a goal down but bounced back strongly to win convincingly, fully avenging two defeats at the hands of Tulse Hill last season. Horsham made the early running only to see the hosts take the lead half way through the first half against the run of play. Then ever persistent John Burroughs passed to Jack Dean for him to level to one apiece at the interval. In the second half Matt Hough buried his fourth short corner into the back of the net, but Tulse Hill responded with a soft equaliser. Horsham though finished

strongly, Peter Neave demonstrating good control to supply Jack Dean for his second. Near the end Joe Humphreys put the icing on the cake by latching onto a cross from the side of the D and spectacularly pinging it into the top left corner. Joe modestly told the District Post: “I had plenty of time to hit it!” adding “It’s good to be back playing for Horsham – they gave me a great welcome and I’m really enjoying the camaraderie at the club.” Team Manager Al Campbell said: “We didn’t allow them any short corners and they played very defensively. It was heartening to hear their coach say that Horsham are the best organised, most effective team that they’ve seen all season.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham come back to Broadbridge Heath to entertain sixth in the table West Hampstead. In their third victory of the season the visitors beat Marlow 4-2 last week.

MMJ6 surged into a 4-2 lead but Seb Dunckley turned the tide with a 3-1 defeat of Finn Dock and then Bob Griffiths rescued his night by beating Chris Goodi-

er to set up Evans to take the deciding battle against double winning Harry Yip. Storrington remain unbeaten in the second tier courtesy of a 6-3 win over Horsham E. Keith Anderson was untroubled in maintaining his unbeaten record. MMJ 3 also retains a strong interest in the promotion stakes after beating struggling Holbrook 7-2. The big match in Division 1 brought two of the three leading teams together, Horsham A and MMJ 1, and it was a match that lived up to its billing. MMJ’s Scott Covey made the experienced Ian Ford sweat into a fifth

set to earn his win. Joe Worskett made a real nuisance of himself to account in straight sets for the two unbeaten records of Holly Holder and Mark Weston but still Horsham A came out on top, 6-3. MMJ East Grinstead kept in close pursuit with a 7-2 victory over Horsham B. Andy Sinclair excelled for Horsham C against Horsham D despite them coming out on the wrong side of a 5-4 scoreline. Only Steve Parnell could add to his efforts, although his win over the Graeme Selwyn was a particularly creditable first scalp. Ollie Giles and Mark Clover both opened their accounts for the season with doubles.

Local champion jockey Ryan Moore has pulled off a major racing coup by winning the highly prestigious Melbourne Cup in front of 100,000 passionate race goers at the Victoria track. The race-day is a national holiday with the Cup capturing the imagination of the country in the same way that the Grand National does here. 31 year old Ryan has been our champion jockey three times but has pledged to win the top international races on his shopping list. Australian racing was sceptical of his chances following two previous Melbourne Cup setbacks but his win on German trained Protectionist left fans in awe of Ryan’s skill and dedication, especially as he had just won Australia’s Cox Plate, another top race, providing £3million winnings in ten days. At Melbourne Ryan brought Protectionist through from the back, leaving the 21 other contenders stranded yet when told that he would go down in Australian racing

folklore he said: “The horse might but I won’t! I’ve been lucky to ride two good horses here and you take your chances when they’re good enough.” But his record is impeccable – 19 Group One triumphs in 12 months – in eight countries across four continents. Shrewder Australian pundits were not surprised by his successes after observing him study the opposition very intensely. Ryan, in great demand on Australian TV and radio saying: “I knew a lot of the horses coming into the Cup and have been watching plenty of races to get to know the local horses. Protectionist had better potential and found the extra.” In between the two big races Ryan flew to Los Angeles for the Breeders Cup and his next stop is seven weeks in Japan then Hong Kong and back to Japan before coming home to partner Michelle and their three small children on Christmas Eve. Success is a constant feature at father Gary’s Cisswood Stables at Lower Beeding – Brother Jamie celebrating Ryan’s achievements with a win on Smart Exit in a chase at Chepstow. Ryan’s growing following will ensure that he is a much sought after jockey on the world racing stage.

Holbrook bring Kingslea back down to Earth Junior Table Tennis Dave Smith – Sports Editor After only managing a draw last week Holbrook re-asserted themselves in week 4 of the Horsham Primary Schools Table Tennis League A with an 8-0 rout of previously second placed Kingslea. Holbrook’s Leo Anderson won 3-2 against both Melissa Berry and Max Wright. Harry Filson added another two to his unbeaten record but met a surprise high level of resistance from Berry who took their match into a fifth set. Warnham whitewashed a mandown Leechpool team. Connal Lawes and Dan Harrison managed to win a set each but other than that it was one-way traffic.

Southwater turned up without their top player Zach Hodges but it made no difference to their fortunes as replacement Charlie Graham-Adams stepped in with confidence to ensure business as usual as they despatched an enthusiastic but forlorn Shelley team 8-0. Billingshurst crushed Heron Way 7-1 with Chris Goodier, Tom Chambers and Jack Furse-Copse all winning doubles. Only Josh James 3-0 win over Louis Massingham salvaged any consolation for the Herons although Louis Humphries came close to getting a second taking Jack Furse-Copse into a fifth set before finally losing. Walkover into round Lions through to the quarter-finals three of Senior Vase Rugby Andy Layzell - HRUFC

The 2014-15 Horsham 1st XV squad in the new kit Rugby Richard Ordidge - HRUFC Horsham were granted a walkover into round three of the Senior Vase when Grasshoppers from Middlesex contacted the club to advise that they could not raise a front row and therefore wished to pull out. This competition provides Horsham with the opportunity of playing at Twickenham for the first time in their history should this cup run continue. Horsham are now drawn against Fullerians from Watford on

January 3. As part of the pyramid structure of league rugby in England, participants in the Senior Vase play in equivalent standard leagues across the country and with the Green and Whites currently heading their London league they are one of the favourites to go far in this tournament. Horsham’s next game in London 3 South East is away to Folkestone on Saturday November 15. Folkestone currently lie fourth in the table and traditionally provide tough opponents with league honours shared last season.

Atlantis remain top of Arena National League Swimming Dave Smith – Sports Editor On Saturday evening, the Atlantis swimming team travelled to Maidstone for the second round of their Arena National League campaign. Sitting on top of the league after the first round, Atlantis were full of confidence as they came up against teams from Orpington, City of Canterbury, Croydon, Dartford and the host club Maidstone. Croydon had also had a very good first round gala result, and Atlantis was expecting a close battle with them and the strong team from Canterbury which proved to be the case as the three teams shared the top three places in 7 of the first 10 races. Atlantis however were winning the most races and gained a small points lead that they built on as the evening progressed to move further ahead. On completion of the 50 races at the end of the evening Atlantis finished as relatively comfortable winners, having won 22 of the races and finishing second in 15 of the others. The final point’s totals were Atlantis 242, Croydon 229, Canterbury 172, Maidstone 155, Orpington 148

and Dartford 99. The Deputy Head Coach from Atlantis, Andy Lobley said “There was a massive effort from our swimmers tonight and they all swam really well. We had several under the weather and a few carrying a niggle, but everyone stepped up to the mark and did a great job. Two wins puts us in the top gala for the last round which will be a real battle for all the clubs involved. I am expecting it to be full of Sussex clubs so that will be a good test for us. In the meantime we need to get back to work as a busy programme stretches out in front of us now.” The next round will be held on Saturday December 13 and will be the final round of this year’s competition, with the teams currently in the top 6 places swimming against each other for the league title. The winners and the runners up will also win promotion to the Premier League for next year’s competition. The final round is dominated by teams from Sussex with Atlantis, Crawley, Brighton and Hastings representing the county where they will be joined by teams from Croydon and The Black Lion Swimming Club from Gillingham in Kent.

Horsham Lions came through a free flowing match victorious over a very committed Lewes 2’s team to proceed to the quarter finals of the Sussex Bowl. Horsham failed to make use of the wind at their backs in the first half of it, instead deciding to pass the ball wide to make the most of their pacey backline. However the power that the Horsham pack displayed was impressive in setting up a number of opportunities for scores. The first try of the game came from a break by Richard Henderson who drew the Lewes fullback in before passing to Pete Summers whose pace outstripped the cover defence to touch down in the corner. Although Lewes countered Horsham’s attacks they were un-

able to penetrate the Lions line. Lion’s second try came from a counter to a Lewes chip kick over the Horsham defensive line that was collected by James Layzell whose foot work beat a number of Lewes defenders to drive deep into the Lewes 22 from the ruck. The Lions had an overlap and through excellent hands the ball made its way out to Jerry Downey whose pace outstripped the covering defence to score in the corner. The second half was played in the same vein as the first except Lewes seemed to have been reinvigorated by their coach’s half time talk and started the half strongly. Within the first ten minutes Lewes attacked the Lions with some powerful runs that were only stopped by last ditch tackles from the Lions defence. Lewis did eventually cross the line after a powerful run from

their number 8 broke a number of tackles before going over for the try. The Lions responded by scoring the try of the match through Jerry Downey, who made a superb outside break in which he pushed off a number of defenders to outstrip the rest of the Lewes defence to score under the post. The try was converted by Josh Chalk. Lions Manager Andrew Layzell reflected on an excellent performance by his side in saying, ‘I think that there was a lot of positives to take away from the game, our defence at times were superb with special mention to Jordan Smith whose power in the tackle was in evidence today. The scrum was powerful with Liam Brady showing power and technique on regular occasions to push his opposite number back. My Man of the Match was Liam Brady for his all-round game.”

Below par YM Beat Ten-Man Ringmer Saturday November 8 - Sussex County League Div 1 Horsham YMCA 3 - 1 Ringmer Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter Horsham YMCA avenged their Sussex RUR Cup defeat to Ringmer last month, as they beat the Blues 3-1 in Division 1 action at Gorings Mead on Saturday afternoon. Dan Sullivan opened the scoring for the hosts from the penalty spot on the half hour mark, before efforts after the break from Anthony Hibbert and Josh Brown, either side of Ringmer’s Jacob Shelton being shown red for a two footed tackle, extended YM’s lead. Ringmer substitute Louie Pople’s late penalty earned his side a consolation in added time, but it wasn’t enough to halt the home side from making it six games unbeaten, despite some minor frustrations from manager Peter Buckland. The YM boss commented: “It was a good win under the circumstances. I thought that Ringmer were very well organised on a day when we were very average actually. We had a slow start and I tried at half time to really get the players going, but we just didn’t seem to be quite at it today. It’s a bit disappointing after where we have been the last few games. We were a yard too slow all afternoon, but with all things considered it was a good win and it is three points. We’ve got the whole squad available now. Nick [Sullivan] looked like he’d been out for three or four games today, and Phil Gault is still a long way off what we know he can do, but Anthony Hibbert is settling in well. It was nice to be able to look round at the bench and know that I could make changes

that would influence the game.” “Hopefully we can make it seven games unbeaten away at Chichester next week and then we can look forward to our Sussex Senior Cup tie against Eastbourne Town at home on the Tuesday evening.” YM: Lockwood, D. Sullivan,

Nuthurst on the netball mark

Horsham picked up a valuable away point in their fight to escape the bottom three of the Ryman Division One South table. The point however still leaves the Hornets second bottom, four points adrift of third bottom East Grinstead and five points less than Redhill who lie two places above them, just outside the relegation places. Kent is not a happy hunting ground for Horsham having lost all three of their matches there this season and having failed to win on Kentish soil since 2010. The point therefore can be looked upon as a good one; however at this stage the need to grab some league wins, in any county, remains a priority if the club are to climb to safety. In a game where both sides had few chances and were both guilty of poor ball retention all the opportunities that did come were from set pieces and long balls to the forwards, making for a fairly scrappy affair. Gary Charman and Byron Napper both had chances from corners during the first half hour while Ramsgate’s Greg Skinner hit a tame shot at Williams when he should have scored and the same player was flagged narrowly offside when a long ball up field put him through one on one with Williams. As the last third of the half remained Skinner, who was involved

Busy keeper Gareth Williams kept the score down

Heath shock the leaders Saturday November 8 - Sussex County League Div 1 Littlehampton Town 3 - 3 Broadbridge Heath Football Andrew Crisp – BBH FC Steve Painter’s Broadbridge Heath side turned the form book on its head and came close to causing a major upset when they travelled to Division One leaders Littlehampton Town last Saturday. Still missing his main strikers through injury, Painter gambled by playing Ollie Moore, his centremidfield player, as the main striker with Jake Legrange and Jamal Sultan playing either side. And that inspirational move certainly paid off with Moore scoring twice and Dan Attwater adding a third as Heath went into a 3-1 lead against their high-flying opponents. Heath got off to a great start when Attwater forced the home keeper into a save in the opening minute, followed immediately by two successive corners. The home side took a while to get going but

came close to scoring on 17 minutes when their skipper drilled a low shot just wide of the post. Heath responded with the opening goal just 3 minutes later, Rob Godfrey won the ball in midfield and played the ball over the defence for Moore to run on to and score with a right foot shot across the face of the goal. The lead was short lived when defender Lee Garnham played a long free-kick into the Heath penalty area, the Littlehampton forwards attacked the ball but it avoided everyone and went in at the far post. 6 minutes into the restart Heath were awarded a free kick in their own half next to the dugouts. Matt Carruthers launched the ball forward to Dan Attwater who took a touch on the edge of the box and then hit a right foot shot past the Littlehampton keeper into the net. Things got even better for Heath on 55 minutes when Moore chased after a long Attwater clearance, the Littlehampton keeper sprinted off his line to clear the danger but only managed to hit the ball into Moore who reacted quickly to

knock the ball into the empty net. In an attempt to get back into the game the visitors pushed everyone forward and pulled a goal back midway through the half when Josh Clack scored from close range. Heath still looked dangerous on the break and Sultan came close to scoring a fourth when he cut inside from the left and hit a right foot shot from the edge of the penalty area that went just wide of the post. On 78 minutes the home side were awarded a free kick just 20 yards from goal, Clack stepped forward and hit a beauty round the wall into the net wide of the diving James Fisher. In the closing minutes Littlehampton’s Scott Packer picked up his second yellow card for a foul on Sultan, followed immediately by a red to ease the pressure on the Heath defence. Heath Manager Steve Painter had mixed feelings after the match saying “I would have gladly accepted a point before the match but having taken a 3-1 lead we should have held on and won the game.” Heath Team: Fisher, Robinson, Attwater, Carruthers, Flack, Godfrey, McDermott (Wanstall 79) Waddingham, Legrange (Holmes 79) Moore, Sultan.

After a battling draw last weekend at Ramsgate the inconsistency and the ability to ‘not turn up’ that has plagued Horsham this season reared its head again on Tuesday night in a lacklustre display that saw the Hornets exit the Sussex Senior Cup at the first attempt for the third year running. With the team relying so much this term on Tony Nwachukwu’s goal threat, his absence due to injury was always going to be a problem on this wet and windy night. And so it proved as visitors Worthing comfortably won the match with Hornet’s keeper Gareth Williams being the busiest player on the pitch while the home side failed to register any worthwhile attempts on the visitor’s goal. The first half started in a fashion that was to set the tone of the game when after only two minutes Worthing’s Tariq Richards troubled Williams with an acrobatic attempt on goal. The usually reliable Williams could be excused for dropping the ball from a corner due to the horrendous conditions, but he would have been grateful nonetheless for Byron Napper’s clearance off the line to save his blushes. The only effort on goal by Horsham in the first half worthy of naming as an attempt came from Tarbie who hit a low shot that Worthing keeper Fagan saved comfortably at the near post. All the action of note was taking place in the Horsham half, Jaz Rance brought a good save out of Williams and a Terry Dodd shot just cleared the bar. The visitor’s Brannon O’Neill was extremely unlucky to have not given his side the lead when his thirty yard effort rattled Williams’ crossbar. It was O’Neill again who troubled Williams by fir-

ing a shot inches wide as the visitor’s peppered the Horsham goal. Ex Hornet Trevor McCreadie should have scored after Akande allowed a through ball to go, but McCreadie’s effort was weak and easily handled by Williams. But just a couple of minutes before the break Worthing finally got the goal they deserved when the home defence shut off allowing Dodd to cross for the unmarked O’Neill to nod the ball home to take Worthing in at the break a goal up. Horsham came out a little more upbeat in the second and produced more in the opening fifteen minutes of the half than they did in the whole of the first, although it would have been difficult to have been worse. Tarbie, Smith and Ampleford all had attempts on goal but the upsurge was to be short lived as again the Horsham defence went to sleep once more allowing a cross from Dodd to reach the head of the totally unmarked Tariq Richards, who headed his side into a two goal lead. From this point Worthing took back the control they had during the majority of the match and the remainder of the game became a constant barrage upon Gareth Williams goal. Only some great work from Williams along with some poor finishing from the dominant Worthing players prevented the score from increasing and it was with some relief that the final whistle brought to an end what was this season an all too familiar lethargic and toothless display from the Hornets. Much all round improvement will be needed tomorrow, Saturday November 15, for the trip to Barkingside along with a return to fitness of Tony Nwachukwu if the clubs involvement in the FA Trophy this season is to continue. Williams, Marriott (Wicking 74) King, Tarbie, Gilbert, Akande, Williams (Frankland 69) Morley, Ampleford, Napper, Smith. Unused Subs: Varley, Hawthorne.
