Bogus cops scam hits elderly residents

Phil Dennett News Editor HOAX police officers are conning elderly people in Horsham area out of thousands of pounds in a scam. The victims have handed over

£111,524 since the first of the cons kicked off in January. But more than £1.5 million destined for the crooks has been stopped, either because alert residents refused to hand over details or police intervened. Now detectives are warning older

people in the area to be on their guard. The bogus officers scare people into believing criminals have got hold of their personal details and urge them to take money from their banks and transfer it or hand it over for safe keeping.

The scam is played out over the telephone, and it is in fact the people who say they are police who are the actual criminals, keeping the line open while next pretending to be bank officials or helpline advisers who then suggest the victim should move their money. Police say because the fraudsters control the recommended account or send couriers to collect the cash, it is easy for victims to become confused and be duped into parting with their savings. On Monday 21 elderly people living in Horsham were called on between 9.30am and 6.45pm by someone claiming to be Detective Constable Rodgers or Latchman from Holborn police station. On previous occasions they have stated they were from Hammersmith police station. One particular reason given by the hoax officers is that a family member has been arrested. All of the 21 attempted crimes this week were in Horsham, Southwater, Warnham and Rusper. There have been 253 calls to police about attempted scams, with 17 cases in which people were persuaded to part with money. Inspector Clare McKnight said: “Even where the criminals have been unsuccessful they cause immense harm to people who by virtue of their age are often particu-

larly vulnerable. “They become confused and fearful, sometimes even losing the confidence to go out, and so end up housebound.. “This is the less obvious impact of this type of crime, and we would welcome any information that may help us to track down and arrest those responsible. “In the meantime, people should be on their guard against such calls and never disclose details of bank accounts. If suspicious, they should not use their telephone for at least 10 minutes after hanging up but if possible use a mobile phone or a neighbour’s phone to speak to Sussex Police. “They should dial 999 if a suspect call has just been received, but alternatively can email 101@sussex. pnn.police.uk or phone 101 with information, quoting Operation Edisto.” Among the incidents, acting on one of the bogus officer’s instructions, an 83-year-old woman withdrew £6,400 from her bank but thwarted the would-be thieves by placing it in a friend’s safe. And an 88-year-old woman was “advised” by a bogus helpline operator to transfer £5,000 from an ISA into another account and to take out £7,000 in Euros. Fortunately, genuine bank officials became suspicious and intervened.

Tory grip on Horsham District Council tightens Conservatives have a tighter hold than ever as they take their seats on the new Horsham District Council . The party’s supporters painted the district a distinctly deeper shade of blue as the Conservatives added another seven seats to their existing domination of the council chamber in the election on Thursday of last week. When the new council convenes the Conservatives will have 39 of the 44 seats, instead of the 32 it had before the vote. Liberal Democrats will have only four members, having lost three seats. Mike Morgan, of Henfield, will be the only Independent, instead of the previous total of four. The Liberal Democrats lost seats

phatic winner was Conservative political agent Toni Bradnum, who took 1142 votes in Nuthurst, way ahead of the 283 polled by Liberal Democrat Lesley Hendy. Liberal Democrats Christine Costin and Leonard Crosbie created a bright spot for the party, decisively retaining Trafalgar ward, but otherwise it was a night of losses. Councillors will now begin the process of choosing leaders and committees. Parish council elections have also been held. There were no elections for West Sussex County Council, having been held in 2013. Conservatives also dominate at County Hall, Chichester, with 45 seats. The other seats are UKIP 10, Lib Dems 7, Labour 6, Independent Group 3, and Independent 1.

at Broadbridge Heath, Horsham Park and Roffey North, while the Independents surrended those at Holbrook East, Steyning and Denne. The losses included seats formerly held by General Election candidates Jim Rae , Independent, at Holbrook East, and UKIP’s Roger Arthur at Chanctonbury . UKIP now has no seat on the council. The most overwhelming win was by sitting Conservative at Rusper, Liz Kitchen, who polled 1198 votes against nearest challenger Anthony Millson, recording 224 for the Liberal Democrats. Another em-

A new MP for Horsham - The Mighty Quin gets in New Horsham MP Jeremy Quin is continuing 135 years of unbroken Conservative domination in the area as he waits to be sworn in to his new job next week. The clear victory of the company adviser from Buckinghamshire in the General Election on Thursday of last week was historically predictable. No-one has managed to budge the Conservatives from the town, even with boundary changes, since Henry Fletcher, baronet, won it in 1880 from the Liberals with 605 votes. Fletcher later became Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher after changing his name upon inheriting estates.

Mr Quin, aged 46, polled 32,627 votes, taking 57.3 per cent of the poll The Liberals had enjoyed other successes before the late 1800s and have in modern times provided the strongest opposition locally. But this year their 21st century Liberal Democrat successors lost 20 per cent of their 2010 vote. Instead a party of much more recent history, the United Kingdom Independence Party, proved the nearest challengers, with the Liberal Democrats dropping to third. Mr Quin, aged 46, polled 32, 627 votes, taking 57. 3 per cent of the poll, against previous Horsham MP Frances Maude’s 52.7 per cent last election. Other Horsham constituency votes were Roger Arthur (UKIP) 7969 Morwen Millson (Liberal Democrat)6647 Martin Davis (Labour) 6499 Darin Green (Green Party)

2198 James Smith (Something New) 375 Jim Duggan (Peace Party) 307 and Jim Rae (Independent) 303. Some people living in Horsham District voted for an MP in Arundel and South Downs parliamentary constituency. They were from Bramber, Upper Beeding , Woodmancote, Chanctonbury, Chantry, Cowfold, Partridge Green, Shermanbury, West Grinstead, Henfield, Pulborough Coldwaltham, and Steyning. Sitting MP Nick Herbert celebrated 10 years in the job by holding his Arundel and South Downs seat comfortably for the Conservatives, with 60 per cent of the votes, his highest share. The Liberal Democrats lost 20 per cent of their 2010 vote, with UKIP reflecting their success in Horsham by surging into second spot. The votes were Nick Herbert (Conservative) 34331 Peter Grace (UKIP) 8154 Christopher Wellbelove (Labour) 6324 Shweta Kapadia (Liberal Democrat) 4062 Isabel Thurston (Green) 3606. The area around Horsham also remained true blue, reflecting the party’s success nationally. The Conservatives held neighbouring Mid Sussex through sitting MP Nicholas Soames and retained Crawley with sitting MP Henry Smith. Mr Soames polled 32, 268 against second placed Greg Mountain (Labour 7,982). Mr Smith polled 22, 829, with Labour’s Chris Oxlade taking second spot with 16, 303. With local Conservative candidates being firm favourites, attention centred on how the Liberal Democrats, their closest challengers in modern times, would fare. The polls told their own story as one of the most fascinating General Elections nationally for many years unfolded.

Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher Mr Quin told The District Post: "It is a huge privilege to be elected to serve the Horsham constituency. I have been given an amazing opportunity to be a champion for the people of this area. “That is my priority. There are huge challenges ahead which will need to be addressed.

“The constituency benefits from economic growth and under a majority Conservative Government I am sure will continue to thrive. In many areas though there is a risk that the quality of life that makes this such a special place is coming under threat. “Our infrastructure must keep pace. Nowhere is this more ap-

parent than local health services. “The joy of being an MP is being able to help shape policy nationally while being able directly to help individuals. I want to be a committed and wwdedicated constituency MP. I look forward to being approachable and of direct assistance to all constituents, whatever their politics."

Firefighters back from Girls go mufti to help quake victims tough task in Nepal A firefighter from Horsham and his West Sussex rescue team colleagues faced a tough task in Nepal in the aftermath of the country’s catastrophic earthquake. Owen Marfany, 46, went to Nepal as part of the UK International Search and Rescue team supporting the international response. The team included six specially trained firefighters from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. The West Sussex firefighters were primarily responsible for the logistics operation and helped establish the UK team’s base of operations in the grounds of the British Embassy in Kathmandu. Owen and his pals are now back in the UK. Meanwhile Nepal has been rocked by a second earthquake, adding more deaths and injuries to the thousands already recorded. Part of the rescue team’s role was assessing the local buildings and other services in the Chautara area of central Nepal and searching for missing people. However, with hopes fading of finding further survivors the team was asked to turn efforts to body recovery. The team helped at the scene of a collapsed six-storey building in Kathmandu. A seven-year-old girl with

Pupils at Farlington School, Horsham, were so touched by the plight of people thousands of miles away that they raised money for them. The public-spirited efforts of the girls for the stricken people of Nepal will help in the massive amount of rescue and rehabilitation work needed. The prep school girls were allowed to wear mufti with a floral theme in return for a donation to the Nepal earthquake disaster appeal. Pictured are a few of the youngsters who threw themselves into the spirit of the occasion to help other youngsters far less fortunate than themselves. Thousands of people died in the damage caused by the earthquake and many thousands are injured and homeless.

two broken hips trapped in bed for a week was among the shocked victims. A UKISAR spokesperson said last week: “People’s chances of still being alive in the collapsed building are, tragically, virtually nil. We have confirmed that we will support body recovery operations. “In addition, members of the team will be carrying out health infrastructure assessments in the Halambra and Lantang districts. “Their team’s skills spread to far more than search and rescue. Several UKISAR members have training in, and experience of, disaster and humanitarian medicine.“Their health infrastructure and medical assessment will involve gathering and feeding back medical intelligence to the international health organisations on the ground, to help them best prioritise their work and efforts.”The team of volunteers, drawn from UK fire and rescue services and health trusts, has been deployed by the Department for International Development. The other five members who went with Owen from West Sussex are Adrian Kirkpatrick (Crawley Down), Matt Simmons (Wittering), Antony Walker (Shoreham), Neil Graham (Shoreham) and Joe Sacco (Worthing).

Collection raises over £1100 for disaster efforts Members of The Rotary Club of Horsham, ably assisted by members of Horsham Inner Wheel, organised a collection in Horsham Town Centre last week in aid of the Nepal earthquake appeal. An amazing £1150 was collected in a four hour period and Horsham Rotary Club would like to thank the people of Horsham for their generosity. Horsham Rotary President, Dave Smith, said “Once again the people of Horsham have shown their desire to help people in need and have allowed us to make a good contribution to the disaster appeal. The staff and pupils at Forest School are holding a collection this week that they

will send to us to add to the monies already raised.” All monies raised will be used to supply the people of Nepal with Shelter Boxes. Shelter Box is a charity supported by Rotary that provides emergency shelter and vital supplies to support communities around the world overwhelmed by disaster and humanitarian crisis. Dave Smith added: “Anyone who was not able to give to the collection we held in the town centre can still send donations for the Nepal appeal to us. Please go to our web site and use the contact us facility to leave your details and we will reply to you with information on how to contribute.” www.horshamrotary.org.uk

Campus deal collapse loses 2,000 jobs Phil Dennett News Editor Job seekers are suffering the loss of more than 2,000 Horsham vacancies after the collapse of a deal to bring a University campus to the town. Brighton University pulled out of a bid to buy the former Novartis site in Wimblehurst Road after a Government agency refused crucial funding. The hi-tech campus for higher education would have potentially employed about 2,250 people and brought £1.7billion of investment to the area. As well as the prestige of having a university department based in Horsham, the purchase would have brought a massive jobs boost. Glen Poole communications manager for the university told the Post: “The site was excellent for many reasons. But without the actual funding in place we can’t go forward.” The scheme was doomed when the university’s application to the Regional Growth Fund was unsuccessful, and attempts to find alternative funding to support the University’s own investment have failed. The university planned to open an innovative, high-quality cen-

tre for higher education, providing about 3, 500 places for students. Tom Crowley, chief executive of Horsham District Council, said: “We are extremely disappointed that the University of Brighton has not been able to agree the Government funding package they require to redevelop the former Novartis site as a student campus. “We have worked very closely with the University in recent months to help them secure alternative investment, but sadly they have now confirmed that they are withdrawing from further negotiations to secure the site. “We will continue working with Novartis to investigate other options for the site and we are confident that there is sufficient flexibility on other sites to satisfy the district’s housing and employment needs.” Professor Julian Crampton, the vice-chancellor at the University of Brighton, said: “The government grant was the minimum amount need to complement the university’s much more significant investment and as we have not been able to find an alternative and viable business plan for the development, the university has, very regretfully, had to withdraw from further negotiations for the purchase of the site”

Broadwood Morris Men Day of Dance comes to Horsham The Broadwood Morris Men’s Day of Dance 2015 took place in Horsham town at the weekend to the delight of many onloookers. The event is organised by the Broadwood Morris Men with support from the Horsham District Council. The Broadwood Morris Men were founded back in 1972 and every year invite other Morris sides from the South and South East of England to join them in this traditional celebration of the Morris. Graham Hirst, the Day of Dance Co-ordinator for the Broadwood Morris Men, said: “We are pleased to have had around 20 sides attending this year.” Supporting the festival of Morris dancing, Horsham's Local Produce Market also got involved and went medieval for the day offering a selection of delicious foods from the era. “The Day of Dance is one of the most enjoyable Town Centre events of the year and Broadwood Morris do a grand job in organising all the Morris sides. We do our bit by encouraging our traders to go medieval for the day and, this year, the best of them all was Greener Greens who really got in to the spirit of it all” adds PJ Aldred Since the 13th Century, Horsham has held a charter to hold markets and, today, these markets still play their part in the vitality of the town. Over the centuries, markets have been hosted in both the Carfax and Bishopric in Horsham town centre and, during the Day of Dance.

Call for marshals as St Catherine’s Best selling author Chris Midnight Walk sambas into town Bradford visits Steyning A taste of Brazil is heading to Horsham this summer as part of St Catherine’s Hospice Midnight Walk. The carnival-themed evening will be bursting into Horsham Park on Saturday, June 27, from 10.30pm and St Catherine’s Hospice need you. St Catherine’s is on the lookout for 150 volunteers to help out at the hospice’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Could you or someone you know be one of their magnificent Midnight Walk marshals? St Catherine’s is looking for male and female volunteers to play a vital role on the night by making sure all walkers are safe and most importantly, having fun during the lively, night time challenge.

The ladies only walk sees women tackle a seven, 13 or brand new 20 mile walking route around Horsham Park. The hospice needs people to help marshal, give out refreshments and register ladies as they arrive at the walk. In return, St Catherine’s will provide a light breakfast and refreshments to keep you going. Louise Brown, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said: “Our Midnight Walk is the perfect way to kick-start your summer with Brazilian entertainment, carnival costumes and an energetic atmosphere not to be missed! Now in its eighth year, the fundraiser helps St Catherine’s raise vital funds to continue to provide free care for terminally ill people across

Horsham, Crawley, Mid Sussex and East Surrey. “Last year, more than 500 women took part, collectively raising over £65,000. This year, we’re aiming to raise even more. But we can’t do it without our magnificent marshals. By giving your time, you’ll be helping us to provide care and comfort to local people facing the devastating diagnosis of a terminal illness, as well as support to their loved ones. We can’t add days to life but with your help we can add life to precious days.” If you or someone else you know would like to volunteer at this funpacked fundraiser, please call 01293 447364 or email michaelaclements@ stch.org.uk for more details.

Grammar School

Steyning Grammar School hosted a highly entertaining visit from best-selling author Chris Bradford on Tuesday 28th April. The school was incredibly honoured to be the first stop on his latest promotional tour and students were able to purchase advance copies of the new book, which is being released on 7th May. The writer wowed his audience of Year 8 Students at the school’s Church St site, with an energetic presentation, promoting the imminent release of Ambush; the third book in his BODYGUARD Trilogy. Miss Rahaman, the Literacy Leader at Steyning Grammar School beams: “The whole experience was amazing. If we can immerse the students in the fictional world to enthuse their own writing abilities and ideas then we have won half the battle. Chris Bradford was very entertaining, engaging and an inspiration to all.” For his best selling fiction books, Chris employs a technique he calls “method writing”, fully immersing himself in the subjects he writes about. For the BODYGUARD series, he embarked on an intensive course to become a qualified bodyguard and was able to share many of the secrets and skills he learned with his captivated audience, with willing volunteers participating in

various ‘ inter-active reading’ scenarios, including how to spot danger in a crowd, protecting a VIP and testing students’ self defence and reaction skills. Chris Bradford says: "I write the type of books I'd want to read books filled with relentless action, believable characters and a plot that twists and turn through the pages!" Donna Moore, Librarian at the school said: “The beauty of Chris’ presentation and his books is that they unusually appeal to both boys and girls, and this was vividly demonstrated during his ‘training session’ and afterwards from the reactions students gave to me in the library at break time. An author who can bring his work alive to students helps us here at the school to further the enjoyment and importance of reading for pleasure!” The author of 15 fiction books, including the Young Samurai and BODYGUARD series, Chris Bradford has been published in more than 20 languages and nominated for over 30 book awards, including winner of the Northern Ireland Book Awards 2011 and the Brilliant Book Award 2014. He has also written non-fiction books on songwriting and the music business, notably the critically acclaimed Heart & Soul: Revealing the Craft of Songwriting.

Team Running for Ronnie Billingshurst Primary School pupils raise money in the sunshine raises funds for charity

Under beautiful sunny skies, the children and staff of Billingshurst Primary School held their annual Spring Fair on St George’s Day, 24th April 2015. Festooned with red and white bunting, the playground became a marketplace of stalls and games run by the pupils to raise money for the school. Winners of the poster competition were also announced, following a fourth year of sponsorship by Fowlers Estate Agents, Billing-

shurst High Street. Pupils were invited to design a poster to promote the Fair reflecting the St George’s Day theme, and more children than ever took part. With competition running high the judges found it hard to reach a decision; however the three winners were Zoe Lewis from Reception, Marli Wright Thompson from Key Stage 1 and Isabella Holland from Key Stage 2. The overall winner was Marli. The winning designs are proudly displayed in Fowlers Es-

tate Agents’ window and throughout the village. Each year the Spring Fair continues to break records for the amount of money raised and this year was no exception raising over £1,700.00 for the school. With stalls ranging from the St George’s Cafe to the ‘Knock the Knight Down’ game, there was some healthy competition between Year Groups to see who could bring in the most amount of money. This year the Hunt the Dragon Egg proved particularly popular. Helen Williamson, Head Teacher at Billingshurst Primary School commented: “Thanks to the ingenuity of our pupils and some fantastic weather, we enjoyed a very successful Spring Fair. It is extremely rewarding to watch the children take such pride in coming up with ideas and actively getting involved in this event, ensuring our visitors had a lovely afternoon.” Keith Hutchinson, Manager at Fowlers Estate Agents also stated: “We are very proud to sponsor the poster competition for the fourth year in a row and as ever we were extremely impressed with the creativity of the pupils, the St George’s Day theme inspired some fantastic art-work, and created some legendary dragons.”

Seven local residents of East Grinstead teamed together and entered the Virgin London Marathon last weekend to raise valuable funds for St. Catherine’s Hospice in Crawley. A fellow runner’s partner sadly passed away last year from cancer. He was given the best palliative care from St Catherine’s Hospice. As a gesture of respect the team wanted to ‘give something’ back and approached St Catherine’s offering to run the 26.2 miles in the Marathon on Sunday 26th April 2015 as representatives for them. Their challenge was to complete the 26.2 miles and to raise £10,500 which would equate to a week’s day care at the Hospice. The runners, who called themselves ‘The Magnificent Seven’ were Ian Watkins, Nicky Pumford, Caroline Hamilton, Neia Abbott

and Cathy and Mark O’Donoghue, together with their mentor and fellow runner Karen Wells who unfortunately was unable to run on this occasion. Caroline Hamilton said: “It has been the belief and support of our families and friends that gave us the determination to conquer every mile week upon week. “As well and training and completing the race it is very important that the team achieves their fundraising target for the hospice.” If you would like to donate to their cause, please visit their web site www.justgiving.com/teams/ running4ronnie As a thank you and celebration of their achievement, The Magnificent Seven’ are holding a Post Marathon Celebration Party at East Grinstead Rugby Club on Saturday, May 9 2015. Slinfold Concert Band Returns to the Capitol in Charity Fundraiser Slinfold Concert Band is returning to the Capitol in Horsham on Sunday 17th May, after a three year absence. With a concert entitled ‘Listen to the Band’, the band hopes to raise money for two local charities, AgeUK Horsham District, and Horsham Hospital League of Friends. The Band has supported the League of Friends for several years through fund raising events, and by playing at their annual Summer Fete. The League will be running the raffle at the Capitol concert. This year the Band is pleased also to support AgeUK Horsham District, to whom they will donate the profits from the concert. Said the Band’s publicity officer Chris Youngman, ‘As a community band we often perform in support of worthy local causes. We have regu-

The concert will, as usual, feature a wide ranging selection of music old and new, serious and light hearted, complemented by solos from some of the Band’s talented musicians, and whether you are a regular supporter, or are hearing the Band for the first time we are confident that there will be something for everyone to enjoy. ‘Listen to the Band’ takes place at 3pm on Sunday 17th May. Tickets are priced at £12.50 adults, £1 aged 16 & under, and are available from the Capitol box office, by phone (01403 750220), or online. The concert proved to be a triumph, both musically, and financially, and we are hoping we can return there soon’. Playing in the Capitol in support of the League of Friends and AgeUK is something the Band is pleased to be doing, and it is hoping that regular supporters of the Band will join with supporters of the two charities to ensure a successful afternoon. Students from local schools taking part in this year’s St Catherine’s Hospice Thrifty £50 Project, supported by The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), have raised over £12,800! The Thrifty £50 Project, which ran from January until April this year, saw RBS’s South East Corporate and Community teams provide mentoring and business advice to five local schools: Hazelwick School in Three Bridges, St Wilfrid’s in Southgate, Farlington School, Tanbridge House School and Millais School in Horsham. Teams were given £50 at the start of the project and set the challenge of raising £1,500 each for the charity, by holding events such as talent shows, fun runs, cake sales and non-school uniform days to name a few. RBS has been involved with the St Catherine’s Hospice for several years, helping to raise more than £40,000 through schools initiatives like the Thrifty £50 Project and offering specialist business insight and advice. The project concluded on 29 April with an awards evening at Cisswood House Hotel near Horsham, which kindly provided the venue for free. Each team presented their plans, actions and outcomes to a panel of hospice and RBS judges.

The winners for 2015 are: Hazelwick School - “Most Money Raised” Tanbridge House School - “Best Presentation” Hazelwick School - “Best Planning” Millais School - “Most Innovative Fundraising Idea” Gabi Field, Community Fundraiser at St Catherine’s Hospice, said: “The enthusiasm, creativity and dedication of this year's teams has been inspirational and it has been so exciting seeing their fundraising ideas come to life. “With more than £6m to raise every year, it is so important that young people in our community feel motivated to support their local hospice. A huge thank you to all teams, their teachers and the RBS mentors and congratulations to everyone for taking part and raising such an incredible amount of money.” Colin Crisp, Corporate Director at RBS, "All of the students who took part in this year's Thrifty £50 Project should be hugely proud of themselves for raising so much money. For five years we have been mentoring students in taking on business-focused fundraising challenges for St Catherine's and it has always been incredibly worthwhile. We are really glad to be able to support our local

Combined Cadet Force swap cam for glam The Loxwood Joust returns with two action packed family weekends Photos by David Searle

The popular family event, the Loxwood Joust is returning and this time it’s taking place over two weekends on August 1 and 2, and August 8, and 9. Loxwood Joust is a fantastic family fun day out of mediaeval revelry and mayhem. Watch as your young knights and princesses revel in the Masked Executioner’s gory tales of torture; jump everytime the cannons fire and get close up to the graceful high-flying hawks. Will they help the Knight Marshall to control his knights and notice their bad behaviour in the all action jousting tournament? Will stories of past battles like Agincourt capture their imaginations? Will they favour have-a-go archery over pelt the peasant or maybe try both? Out and about in the recreated mediaeval battle camp there will be fully armoured knights showing what life was like at that time. Traders and hawkers will be selling a range of specialist goods in the mediaeval market place and companies of wandering minstrels will keep you entertained with plays, singing and dancing. You won’t forget the memorable antics of the Court Jester and trying to avoid those 'creatures most foul' - the Lepers. Venture to the Woodland Stage to hear the Mediaeval Baebes’ sing romantic songs of chivalry, love and loss. In the Learning Zone, the Medieval Housewife will tell of fashion and style, the Executioner discusses the art of torture, and the Mediaeval Cook demonstrates and talks about Mediaeval cooking, but will it be with dragons blood ingredients? And there are plenty of opportunities to sup fine ales and dine on local organic fayre. Open from 10am to 6pm at Loxwood Meadow, West Sussex. Most excellently located just off the B2133 between Wisborough Green and Loxwood, there is ample free parking or a minibus service from

They might be more used to camouflage than couture, but cadets at Christ’s Hospital recently had the chance to glam up in dinner jackets and ball gowns for their Anniversary Mess Dinner and prize giving. The formality and ceremony of the event certainly contrasted with the many adrenaline-fuelled activities the cadets have undertaken this year, ranging from flying and parachuting to firefighting and gorge scrambling. The evening celebrated a year of extraordinary achievements for the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). Successes have included Colour Sergeant Elliot Riley securing the prestigious best international cadet prize on an exchange with the Canadian Army and Cadet Warrant Officer Tom Higginson successfully completing a Royal Navy Special Flying Award. Tom has also recently won a RAF scholarship, which will provide financial support through university. The event opened with a drinks reception, which was followed by a three-course meal exhibiting the extraordinary range of the School’s chefs. Proceedings closely followed the formality and traditions of a British Army officers’ mess, with students learning something of the etiquette of formal dining. The youngest cadet proposed toasts to the Queen, church and “Housey” in a Christ’s Hospital tradition that dates back to the 18th century. The event concluded with the presentation of prizes including the Contingent’s own Sword of Honour. The Contingent Prize for Military Instruction was awarded to Petty Officer Kieran Harper, while Corpo-

The Pooley Sword was presented to Cadet Warrant Officer Tom Higginson Contingent Commander Captain Mark Aggrey commented: “The contingent’s record numbers and level of activity is a product of the enthusiasm of its senior cadets, so it is always a pleasure to reward their commitment with such a contrast to our usual activities. The cadets look forward to the event for

Sussex Folklore: The Leaf Man Open letter to the Chief hiding in the woods of Sussex Executive of Horsham Neil arnold Sussex Folklore

I’ve always been intrigued by creepy stories and their power to embed themselves into a local community. Growing up in the ‘80s I was obsessed with tales concerning local bogeymen and one such yarn which often spooked me was known as the Leaf Man. Such a monster was said to haunt an undisclosed section of woodland not far from Hailsham although reports of the creature seem mostly vague. However, one eye-witness told me a few years ago the following story: “I had been with three friends at the time; it must’ve been around 1984 during a time when it was normal for us kids to be out playing in the woods as long as we were home by a certain time. “I think at the time we were playing not far from what people know as Folkington Wood, it was around dusk and we were all lighting a campfire when suddenly, from the shadows and like in all good horror films, we heard the snap of a twig. “We all sensed that we were being watched but as teenagers we were brazen and goaded what was lurking the bushes to come

out and fight. We all armed ourselves with sticks and stones only to have our eyes met by a horrifying sight. Out from the shadows came a tall, spindly figure but which seemed to be covered in hair which in turn was matted with leaves. “The creature gave off a horrid stench and through its entangled hair we could see two burning eyes. As I’m sure you can imagine we were all terrified and so we fled, never once looking behind us to see if the monster was in pursuit. “Of course, no-one believed our story but as we got older, and most of us except one remained friends, we often spoke about the creature we named the Leaf Man. People often ask were we the victims of a hoax? Memories can be hazy, but this thing seemed real and more than just a man in a suit.” Oddly, I have another report of a socalled Leaf Man but from Kent; and again it involved a group of youths playing in an area and encountering such a

manifestation. Some believed however that the creature was in fact a ghost of a soldier adorned in camouflage enabling him in life to conceal himself amongst the foliage. Another creepy story from Sussex comes from Gatwick Airport of all places where it was once spoken of by local children that a horrible monster once lived. Of course, an airport is the last place you’d expect any bloodthirsty beast to reside, But anyway, the creature – sometimes believed to have been a descendant of the ancient dragon once said to haunt St Leonard’s Forest – was said to feed off scraps around the area; making its way through a network of sewer systems, drainage pipes and the likes between villages. Naturally, local children probably created the tale but where equally scared by it to the point that eventually it was claimed that the salivating serpent was eager for human flesh too. It has been suggested that some children are so reluctant to go to school around Crawley in case they get plucked from the path by this monster; whilst other children walk home in groups – all fearful that this elusive dragon may dine on their bones. It is possible of course that many of these legends may have stemmed from actual sightings of snakes and other reptiles that over the course of history may have escaped and been released, but how can we explain the appearance of the Sussex Leaf Man?

District Council Jim Rae Independent WSCC Member for Roffey divisions No matter that I loathe and despise the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and I have every reason to, unfortunately it is the law of this land and as such must be adhered to; if only for the sake of good order in our society – I trust in that we all are agreed. In the coming months Liberty Trust will file their controversial North of Horsham planning application, whilst as a WSCC Member I will continue the fight for the correct highway infrastructure to ensure proper traffic flows and safety for pedestrians and cyclists; what is actually achieved will be governed by that one-sided law the NPPF – no matter how unfair and inadequate you and I believe that outcome to be. Before the newly elected Members of Development Control (North) Committee sit in deliberation upon that application, I for one would like to see Horsham District Council organise a Member meeting in public (not a Public Meeting); to give those newly elected and in a good few cases inexperienced Members an opportunity to put questions to and otherwise grill one or two persons expert in the field of current Planning Law. I believe it extremely important that such a meeting is held in public, in order that we the residents have

the opportunity to hear at firsthand the range, scope and quality of questions put to those legal experts – and then to hear and appreciate the legal responses given. After all, the outcome of any future planning meeting must take into account and rely solely upon what is and what is not possible under planning law (the NPPF); what must be avoided is an inappropriate decision being made based solely upon an irrational and emotive dislike of the scheme. Falling foul of the law will certainly lead to an appeal, an appeal that HDC would lose if the law is not followed two its vicious letter, an appeal that would see truly massive costs awarded against the Council (that in the end is you and me the taxpayer) and with that loss upon appeal potentially see millions of pounds of community benefit lost. Over the last two years much has been said about the need for Freedom of Speech and Openness of Local Government, whilst I have seen no issue with how the last administration was led or how it acted; such a meeting would give residents a real opportunity to see and hear democracy in action. Residents in turn would have the opportunity to see at first-hand just how difficult life can be for an elected Member having to operate within current planning laws. Let us see if HDC are willing to permit and organise such a meeting – only time will tell.

Reeves and family go Elephantastic! Comedian Vic Reeves, wife Nancy Sorrell and daughters Nell and Beth, are delighted to introduce their Elephantastic friend, ‘Lady Lollippop’, ahead of Horsham’s safari trail. The cute and colourful elephant sculpture has been named Lady Lollipop and has been decorated by Jim (aka Vic), Nancy and the girls, who are all passionate supporters of Horsham-based wildlife charity, the Born Free Foundation. Ever generous with their time and support for Born Free, the family jumped at the chance to get creative in support of Elephantastic, which will see a stampede of custom-designed eles pop up in shops and businesses throughout the town centre and surrounding areas this summer. Having been lucky enough to see elephants in the wild last year whilst visiting Born Free’s wildlife rescued big cats at the Shwamwari Game Reserve in South Africa, Jim, Nancy and the girls were inspired by their travels and the ‘loving life’ theme, to create a bright and bold design for Lady Lollipop. Jim is a talented artist in his own right, and has signed the ele, which will be sold along with the rest of the herd, at auction in the autumn. Nancy said: “Lady Lollipop has loved spending time in our garden

– we’re really going to miss her!” Elephantastic has been organised by Horsham Rotary Club and in partnership with Horsham District Council; local traders organisation, Horsham Unlimited; and Billingshurst-based marketing agency, PMW Communications, and is set to be the biggest event of its kind to date! As well as supporting a variety of individual local charities, proceeds will also go towards Born Free’s appeal to build Europe’s first elephant sanctuary in Tuscany. Artists from the Horsham Artists Open Studios Group (HAOS) will be painting an elephant family during their Pop-Up exhibition in Swan Walk (unit 43 next to Country Casuals) from Thursday 21st May to Sunday 24th May inclusive. Fabulous innovative, exciting and colourful designs will appear over the four days as artists from the group paint the elephants while shoppers watch. Members of the HAOS group have also volunteered to help businesses decorate their elephant if they need it. Artists wishing to add their name to the list of volunteers can still do so. Girls guided in Indian cuisine at Blue India

Guides from Billingshurst should be able to cook curry and naan breads for their parents after a visit to an Indian restaurant. Staff at Blue India showed the 30 girls from the 2nd Billingshurst guide unit, under leader Natalie Evans, how to prepare authentic dishes in a two-hour session. The hut they usually use was a polling station for the General and District elections so guide organisers planned a night out for the guides instead. Belal Ahmed, manager at Blue India, said: “It’s really interesting. It’s a good thing for them to come

Belal also showed them how make alcohol-free “mocktails”. Belal said: “It’s our first time doing something like this with the guides. Following huge demand after their performance last year, Let’s Hang On returns to The Capitol Horsham on Friday 29 May to take you on a musical journey through the prolific career of one of the most successful bands of all time – Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. It’s easy to frequently name drop the big chart stars of the 60s such

Dino Buttarazzi, Martin Peat, Scott Walker, Jay Harrison and Robin Maughan (who scales the

falsetto heights previously set by Frankie Valli with remarkable ease,) truly capture the original magic of the Four Seasons. The atmosphere created is not only from their music but also their own unique sound, nostalgic mood, and electric feeling! From the beginning in the early 50’s when Frankie first joined the group, the show takes you through

Exciting new facilities at Slinfold Golf & Country Club Slinfold Golf and Country Club are pleased to announce the arrival of three superb new additions to their facilities. First up is an holistic studio, focusing on pilates, yoga and body balance classes. Set away from the hustle and bustle of the gym, the studio treats class participants to a tranquil and relaxing environment. With over 24 holistic classes a week, and more planned for the future (not to mention the 80+ other classes held in their existing two Studios) this really is the place to be, to enjoy a range of classes as part of a healthy lifestyle. The second addition comes in the form of a floodlit driving range. With 13 undercover bays and 4 outdoor bays, the 250 yard range is sure to be the envy of golf clubs from miles around. With this new facility, comes the introduction of a golf academy, providing PGA qualified professionals, to teach juniors, beginners and accomplished golfers, all aspects of the game. Lastly, the club is proud to be one of the very carefully selected venues to introduce MyRide, an indoor cycling class, to its timetable. The

new IC7 spin bikes are the latest and most advanced bike on the market, and will help take their instructor led spin classes, and virtual classes, to another level! With cycling being such a popular activity within the Horsham and Sussex/Surrey areas, these classes are bound to be a hit! Club General Manager, Dominic Eagle, says “We are committed to consistently investing in new facilities, to enhance our offering at, what is already, a superb club. With our commitment to being the best club in the local area, our passion for customer service and guest experience, sets us apart from other clubs.” Slinfold Golf and Country Club has experienced many exciting additions and improvements to its facilities over the years, that have proved a huge success. This has helped see the Club become one of the premiere Country Club facilities in West Sussex and over the Surrey border. PETs POST

23

Sponsored by

Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about what to do if your pet goes missing. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.

When your pet goes missing abbi moon

RSPCA

This week, ITV’s Give a Pet a Home saw William the dog being reunited with his owners, from whom he went missing in July 2014. When William went missing, his owners were distraught. When watching the program last week William’s owners recognised him and instantly got in touch. Whilst it is wonderful news that William has been reunited with his owners, the reality is that, had William been microchipped, he would have been reunited in September 2014, when the RSPCA inspector was called to William’s aid. Pet owners contacting us about their missing pets is a regular occurrence for our lost and found coordinator, Tracy, at RSPCA Sussex North. This month, whether you have a cat or a cockatoo, we share some hints and tips on what to do if your pet does go missing. A microchip is an incredibly important tool. From April 2016, it

will become a legal requirement to have your dog ‘chipped in England but the RSPCA also recommend that all animals that can be are microchipped as it is the most reliable way to be reunited with your pet. It is important to keep your address and phone numbers up to date on the microchip register though; we see many cats that we are unable to reunite because their details are out of date. If you have a pet bird, then it may be more appropriate to have a suitable bird ring placed on its leg and registered. Remember, by law, dogs have to be fitted with a collar and ID tag when in a public place. We recommend a telephone number is on the ID so you can be reunited quicker. In the event that your pet does go missing, inform your microchip register as soon as possible. If you have a pet bird, notify the National Theft Register. Contact the vets in the local area that your animal went missing and don’t forget, if you’ve lost your dog, to contact Horsham District Council (HDC), who are responsible for the recovery and kennelling of stray dogs found within its

boundary. On the first occasion the release fee is halved if the dog is microchipped and the owner can be traced. You can find out more on HDC’s website www.horsham. gov.uk Reunification websites, such as petslocated.com, can be very useful for helping to find your lost pet. If a lost or stray animal has entered RSPCA care, we will register him/ her on petslocated.com. You can search this site for free however for £12 (which gives you access for 12 months), you can register your pet as lost with Pets Located. This will give you enhanced filtering options, an automated matching system which notifies you if there are any matches and a downloadable lost animal poster to print. You could put posters up in newsagents, vets and schools. However, please be aware that HDC may prosecute for fly posting, so don't put posters on lamp posts, telegraph poles, fences, without checking with HDC first. You can advertise lost pets in The District Post for a reasonable price and you could even ask Heart FM and Spirit FM if they can make an announcement about your search.

Due to improved veterinary care, knowledge and dietary habits, our pets are now living longer than they ever have before. One consequence of this is that pets, along with their owners and vets, are faced with a whole new set of age-related problems usually depending on the species and breed in question. So when does a pet officially become “old” - senior or geriatric? It varies depending on species and breed, but cats and small dogs are generally considered senior at the age of 7 and geriatric after 10 years. Larger breed dogs tend to have shorter life spans and are considered senior or even geriatric when they are approximately 6 years of age if they are very large. Owners tend to want to think of their pet's age in human terms. While it is not as simple as "1 human year = X cat/dog years", there are calculations that can help put a pet's age in human terms. Senior tip of the week: To age your pet correctly according to breed and size please check out this informative website www. calculatorcat.com for both cats and dogs.

Can you teach an old dog new tricks? Your fit and faithful companion may be slowing down and showing signs of old age, but many dog owners consider lethargy, reluctance to exercise and laboured breathing to be ‘par for the course’, especially as they may also be suffering from similar symptoms! However, before you pension off your dog to a sedentary retirement, help is at hand as there are a number of things you can do to delay or reduce the effects of ageing. Activity levels and metabolic rates change as dogs get older, so it is important to evaluate your dog’s diet, particularly as overweight dogs are more likely to suffer from diseases such as arthritis, diabetes, bronchitis and heart disease. Specific diets are available for all

requirements including weight control and diseases, so ask in the surgery for further details. Older dogs may increasingly suffer from stiffness, both during or after walks. It is advisable to keep exercising your dog and if it is lagging behind, make your walks shorter. Reluctance to exercise may occur as a result of arthritis, in which case a number of treatment options exist which can, in many cases, transform the dog’s quality of life. Regular exercise can help your dog’s mobility and promote health. Heart disease is one of the major causes of death in dogs and approximately 10% of pets that visit a vet’s surgery are affected. Early signs of heart failure may include lethargy, coughing, a decrease in

appetite and tiredness on walks. All is not lost however, if the illness is detected early on, medications are available to help maintain the quality and length of a dog’s life. If your dog is showing symptoms of old age, there are medicines, which increase the supply of blood and oxygen to the major organs including the brain and heart. The resulting improvement in overall circulation may increase willingness and ability to exercise and improve demeanour, breathing and overall quality of life – alleviating the symptoms of ageing to give you a happier, healthier pet! So if your pet is showing signs of age, book a health check NOW by simply phoning your vet practice.

Rabbit Health and Husbandry In Association with Rabbit Awareness Week 9-17th May Rabbits are very social animals and love the company of another rabbit to snuggle up to. Male rabbits however, will fight once they reach sexual maturity at 3-4 months old. The best way to introduce rabbits is to have them in separate cages next to each other for a few days, allowing them to get use to each others scent. Then place them in a large run together and observe their behaviour, often some chasing will occur but will calm down after a short while. This should be repeated until the rabbits are settled in each others company. Once you are confident the rab-

bits are compatible, they can be put in a clean hutch together and observed to ensure they are still happy in closer proximity. This can be a long process with not all rabbits being compatible, but once complete they are bonded for life. With the Summer months approaching, it is critical to remain vigilant with housing hygiene as the environmental temperatures rise. Rabbits are very hygienic and enjoy grooming as part of a daily routine. Accommodation should be well ventialted and cleaned regularly with soiled areas being cleaned daily. Negligence of maintaining clean

housing can lead to a condition called "fly-strike", in which flies lay eggs within the soiled areas. Infestations can be severe and sometimes life-threatening. For more information on rabbit health and husbandry, please book a complimentary consultation with Josie at our Pulborough surgery. Also, for the month of June don't miss our "Check a lump" consultation for just £10. (Normal consultation price £31.55) and further discounts may apply. Offer is exclusive to lumps and bumps only, other examinations will be exempt from this offer. Terms and conditions apply.

Neil Moore, MD at Guy Leonard & Co, gauges the effect that the Election result will have on the residential property market For several weeks leading up to the 2015 general election, houses didn’t seem as safe as they might be. Across the country, house buying and selling activity stalled as people awaited the result. So the announcement that there would be a winner with a clear if perhaps only slender majority was met by those in the housing industry with a collective sigh of relief. It wasn’t necessarily the political stripe of the party that won but the fact there was at least a clear result and the property market would not be left in limbo during weeks and possibly months of political horse-trading and in-fighting. Also, there will be an acknowledgement that the threat of mansion tax has gone. This was a significant concern towards the upper end of the market. Another worry was the threat of rent control. This would potentially have affected the buy-tolet market dramatically. So there is a mandate from the electorate. The city has responded favourably. The pound is up; shares in major house building firms are up and at least 37% of the population feel a little more confident about the immediate future – buoyed by a trend of improving trade, employment and cost of living figures. But let us all hope - no matter which party we supported – that the next government, besides dealing with a small majority, a large deficit, Europe, devolution, world hot spots and many other incredibly important issues, will at last get to grips with an effective and sustainable housing policy in the UK. It will not be before time. Find out exactly what your home is worth post-election and what is happening in the local housing market. How to avoid mould - and a dispute with your landlord/tenant

Leaders - Horsham www.leaders.co.uk As we gladly leave another long winter behind us, many home owners, landlords and tenants up and down

the country will be all too aware of the range of problems the cold weather has inflicted on their property. One of the most common is mould. It might not sound like a particularly serious issue, but for thousands of landlords

and tenants in the UK it is a major headache. Capable of growing anywhere from carpet to clothing, inside walls, on pipes and above ceilings, mould causes more disputes between landlords and tenants than any other issue. Not only can it be extremely expensive and difficult to fix, it can damage the health of people living with it through the allergens, irritants and toxins it produces. Jane Wilkinson, Leaders’ regional director for Sussex, said: “Mould can seemingly appear out of nowhere and very quickly become a huge concern in many properties. “We often see landlords and tenants pointing the finger at each other when mould appears, with the former suspecting its presence is the result of the lifestyle of the latter. However, tenants often believe their landlord should have done more to prevent it. “Most cases we are alerted to are the result of high humidity rather than any faults with a building, so the most effective approach to take is to implement measures that reduce moisture within a home.” Leaders has compiled five practical tips to help both landlords and tenants reduce the likelihood of their property being affected by mould. - Identify problem areas in a property: While it is impossible to entirely mould-proof a property, you can strengthen its defences. Think about which areas are at most risk. For instance, does the bathroom flood or does condensation form around the bedroom window? Preventing mould in these

places could be as simple as treating them with the right products or making minor repairs. - Focus on ventilation: The growth of mould can be accelerated by some everyday activities. Cooking dinner, taking a shower or doing the laundry releases moisture into your home, so make sure you have effective ventilation systems in place to ensure it does not stick around. - Divert water away from your property: If the terrain around your home does not naturally slope, allowing water to flow away, it could gather and eventually seep into your basement or walls. Find a way to push it as far away as possible. - Monitor humidity: Indoor humidity should be between 30 and 60 per cent. A good hardware store will sell a device that allows you to measure your exact level, and if you find it is too high you can take action in troublesome spots, such as areas where condensation builds. - Dry wet areas: It is impossible for mould to grow without moisture, so it is crucial that you dry any area that becomes wet immediately. Whether your bath water has spilled on to the floor, a pipe has developed a leak or there has been heavy rainfall, aim to dry it as soon as you can. Mrs Wilkinson added: “We believe these simple tips will help landlords and tenants avoid becoming embroiled in a dispute and, most importantly of all, keep properties free of mould and the damage it causes.” For advice you can trust on all aspects of renting, letting, selling or purchasing property please contact your local Leaders branch – www.leaders.co.uk.

Horsham Joggers have marathon weekends Athletics Julia Johnson - Horsham Joggers Horsham Joggers have been enjoying a number of races during the last two weeks. The Mid-Sussex Marathon Weekend took place on the Bank Holiday weekend and consisted of three races over three days, totalling a distance of 26.2 miles. Seven Horsham Joggers completed all three races, receiving a special Marathon Weekend medal: Paul Yokom, Carol-Anne Davies-Jones, Ali Gormley, Paul Burgess, Amanda Sullivan, Helen Woods and Helen Mallows. Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham reached the final without playing a game after a bye in the first round and walk overs in the quarter and semi finals, but in the big match there was no easy ride. Horsham had the misfortune to find themselves pitched against East Grinstead against whom they suffered two heavy defeats in the league earlier in the season. Horsham have won the cup eight times since 2002, beating East Grinstead 3-2 in last year’s event but this season Grinstead have been a different proposition, winning the Women’s Conference East League by nine clear points, fully earning promotion after scoring more goals and conceding fewer than any other team. By contrast Horsham’s season ended with narrow defeats in the play offs resulting in relegation, after which Team Manager Jane Denman said: “It is so sad, the girls gave it their all this season and I couldn’t be prouder of them but the luck just didn’t go our way. Our new coach, England’s Dan Shingles, made a big impact and the girls looked a good team in the final stages of the season.” Club Chairman Nick Evans added: “We’ve had a hugely disappointing end to the season but we’ll re-group during the summer and do our very best to bounce back. There should be new opportunities for some of our impressive young emerging players!”

Aquathlon Series will take place at The Pavilions in Horsham Park. This event will be one of six in the series with the other five being held on June 20, July 18, August 22,

September 19, and October 24. The events are primarily aimed at newcomers, beginners & novices aged over 14 but will be great fun for all levels. The Aquathlon event, which consists of a swim and then a run, has a entry cost of only £5 and was chosen to make it as accessible to as many people as possible as the only equipment needed is a swimming costume, t-shirt and some trainers. Last year Horsham Tri Club ran 6 events with an broad range of participants, ages ranging from 14 to 74, many of whom had never participated in an event like this before. Horsham Tri Club Chairman John Birkens said “We are delighted to be running these six events in 2015, and hope to make Go Tri Horsham and other such events a regular fixture which locals can support at the Pavilions leisure centre” For more information about the events and the club email Graham Kempster at horshamtriclub@ gmail.com.

Sussex stars account for Roffey steam through in the cup depleted Billingshurst Roffey's Alex Collins took two wickets

Saturday May 9 - Sussex Premier League East Grinstead 243-7 declared (54.5 overs) Billingshurst 108 all out 45.2 overs) East Grinstead won by 135 runs Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter Billingshurst’s induction into the Sussex Premier League at much fancied East Grinstead was certain to be a stiff challenge – and so it proved, ending in substantial defeat with Hurst still not at full strength. The hosts won the toss and got off to a good start, Sussex junior professional Fynn Hudson-Prentice going on to post a century. 18 year old Sussex second XI wicket keeper Leo Cammish fell one short of a fifty and although no other batsman inflicted serious dam-

age, Grinstead’s 243-7 presented a demanding task. Hurst skipper Ben Williams was again pick of the bowlers with 4-86, Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi taking 2-74 and Andy Barr 1-42 while Sussex’s Chris Liddle went wicketless. After a troubled beginning to Hurst’s response Dhanushka, Andy Barr and Rob Woodman all made good starts but other wickets evaporated too quickly against the wiles of Bradley Hatchett’s 5-27 and Ian Sturmer’s 3-19, Hurst tumbling to a disappointing 108 all out. Ben Williams told the District Post: “Losing the toss didn’t help and the ball didn’t swing for us. We never really got going with the bat – they bowled well and held some great catches, contributing to our downfall.” After three tough away games in the cup and league, tomorrow Saturday May 16, Billingshurst entertain Eastbourne at Jubilee Fields.

Sunday May 10 England & Wales Cricket Board National Club Championship Sutton 184 all out (44.3 overs) Roffey 185-3 (36.2 overs) Roffey won by 7 wickets After a bye in the first round, Roffey, carrying the flag for our local clubs in the national knockout cup, visited Surrey Championship Premier Division side Sutton, winning impressively. Sutton, third in their league last season, won the toss and elected to bat only for Leigh Harrison to promptly snaffle one of the openers. Three more wickets soon fell, leaving the hosts on 33-4 in the 14th over. Two relatively productive partnerships followed but when they ended and another wicket fell Sutton were teetering on 125-7. In subsequently getting to 184 they were deeply indebted to their captain, Garth Gavson, his 106 coming off 120 balls, following his hundred against Banstead in the previous round. Only two other batsmen reached double figures, 21 extras making the second highest contribution, Leigh Harrison, George Fleming, Alec Collins and Dan Smith each taking two wickets. Roffey responded with a 49 run opening stand and although they lost two more wickets – both to

Gavson - in adding another 40 there were no further alarms, skipper Josh Fleming showing the way with 68 not out and Chris Webb unbeaten on 54 as they cruised home with almost nine overs unused. George Fleming said: “We bounced back well after yesterday and this was a great win. It was a re-

ally good cricket wicket with something in it for everyone. 240 was probably a par score but we bowled well at the start and tied them down – that made a big difference”. In the next round, on May 31, Roffey host Beddington, 2014 runners up in Division 1 of the Surrey Championship.

Roffey shaded by travelling Nomads Saturday May 9 - Sussex Premier League Roffey 171 all out (56 overs) Preston Nomads 173-6 (45.1 overs) Preston Nomads won by 4 wickets Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter

Saturday May 9 - Sussex Premier League Eastbourne 272-7 (58 overs) Horsham 111 all out Eastbourne won by 161 runs Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham had a calamitous start to their Premier League campaign after Eastbourne won the toss, batted first at the Saffrons and put on 135 for the first wicket. Another scalp was taken at the same score but, for some while, further success was elusive, Eastbourne reaching 216-3, aided by some dropped catches. Horsham subsequently took four wickets, Michael Munday being the

pick of the bowlers with 3-59 but with their sometimes unpredictable batting a target of 273 was likely to be a severe challenge. In reply they were soon in trouble at 2-2 before Ben Shoare (20) and James Johnson (32) raised the spirits with a stand of 55. But, once they were out only two of the later batsmen reached double figures, three of the upper order failing to score. At 67-6 the mood had become sombre but Paul Williams and Nathan Roberts dug in until their demise enabled Ben Barter and David Twine to run through the tail, Horsham sliding to a heavy defeat with almost 20 overs still in the bank. Anxious for a league win Horsham return home tomorrow (Saturday May 16) to host last season’s strugglers Bexhill.

In a game of ebb and flow Roffey suffered a rare home defeat after some poor shot selection saw them collapse from 50-1 to 104-8. Yet their last two wickets put on 67, posting a competitive score, only overhauled with some discomfort. Reigning champions Roffey have a good track record against Nomads but since 2006 Nomads have won the league six times and were not to be denied. Roffey were indebted to three of their later batsmen: 18 year old overseas player Ben Manenti, whose 26 included impressive cover drives, Dan Smith (29) and, especially, Stuart Whittingham, showing the way with an unbeaten 43 at number ten. Things looked black when Nomads reached 75-1 but the early season wicket had something in it for the bowlers and just when Roffey were praying for relief George Fleming went down on bended knee to pouch a caught and bowled before grabbing another scalp. A run out and a victim for Rohit Jagota and wickets for Leigh Harrison - who

Despite Leigh Harrison taking wickets, Roffey lost had taken a sharp slip catch - and, in a marathon spell, Ben Manenti, turning the ball prodigiously, reduced Nomads to 113-6. The odds then favoured Roffey, but lusty blows in 39 not out from perennial scourge of the premier league Carl Simon to add to his earlier four wickets saw Nomads home, bringing to mind a hit title from his near namesake Carly - Nobody Does It Better.

Roffey skipper Josh Fleming said: “That wasn’t the way we wanted to start the season but they’re strong and we stuck at it really well. A few more runs would have made it interesting - we’ll play worse than that and win!” In a tight game the distribution of points (seven for Roffey and 30 for Nomads) seemed disproportionate. Tomorrow (Saturday May 16) Roffey visit Brighton & Hove.

Horsham secure historic league and cup double Saturday May 9 - Bob Rogers Sussex Cup Final Horsham 44 – 5 Crowborough

Horsham celebrate the historic double

Horsham completed the most successful season in their history by retaining the Bob Rogers Cup having already won the London League 3 SE championship. The game was a fascinating gauge as to how Horsham might fare when they join Crowborough in a higher league next season. Both sides were missing key players through injury and had to delve deep into their squads with Horsham fielding four colts from the last two seasons. Captain Paul Talbot, powerful back row Michael Tredgett and top try scorer Jamie Gibbs were all unavailable, and influential centre Sean Tuhakaraina following a leg break in February was making his comeback on the bench. To reach the final Crowborough have battled through some tight encounters over the last few weeks but nothing will have prepared them for the intensity of Horsham’s early onslaught. From the first scrum with the technique of Giles Barber, Matt Stone and Liam Brady in the front row to the fore, and the power coming from Jonny Goward and Joe Green in the engine room of the second row, Horsham drove back the opposition pack but Crowborough were able to get the ball away. After five minutes and following a line out the ball was spun right

and Arun Thompson broke through a gap out wide and stepped his man to score the first try which was converted by Johnson. Straight from receiving the kick off James Whiting followed a great pick up with a 30 yard break to pass to Declan Nwachukwu but he was immediately stopped by a high tackle, and Johnson slotted the penalty. Then Jonny Whiting picked up from the base of a wheeling scrum, and scrum-half Ben Rush committed the back row defence to put Nwachukwu in the clear who outpaced the cover and side stepped the final defender, giving Horsham a 15-0 lead after twelve minutes. After a good period of play from Crowborough, Will Bell went close to scoring in the right hand corner. From the ensuing line out Horsham launched a catch and drive which was finished by Rush, and after 27 minutes the Green and Whites were leading 20-0. When Crowborough spilt the ball in the tackle Johnson was the first to pounce and the ball was spun wide to Josh Mills who made good ground with a grubber kick. From this position James Whiting ran a direct line off a delayed pass from Johnson to score under the posts. Horsham were making a clear statement of intent against a higher ranked side in the league and reached half time with a commanding 27-0 lead. With the game appearing to be won Horsham were able to make a number of changes from the bench. Johnson broke through and when faced with just the full back to beat he floated a long pass out to Nwa-

chukwu who scored his second try in the corner. On 63 minutes Iain Fisher scored after a spectacular diving flip back inside by Johnson as he was going out of play, following an Ordidge break off turnover ball which was carried on by Thompson, to take the score to 37-0. Crowborough scored a consolation try through Gus O’Grady as Horsham briefly fell off a few tackles but Horsham were determined to finish strongly with Joey Walker coming on at fly half and delaying his pass to draw the defenders on to him and allow Sean Tuhakaraina to burst through to score under the posts to take the score to a resounding 44-5. Horsham coach Nick Stocker said “It was a great way to end the season. At the beginning of the season the job was to get promoted and retaining the cup was the icing on the cake. I asked the players to play with fire, passion and confidence, and they certainly put on a show. I feel very proud to be associated with these guys. It was a full squad effort however if I had to single out three players who were exceptional it would be Tom Johnson for his sprinkle of stardust, Arun Thompson for his outstanding athleticism and Richard Tredgett for his control and the hits he made”. Horsham Team: W Bell; Nwachukwu, James Whiting, Ordidge, Mills; Johnson, Rush; Brady, Stone, Barber; Green, Goward; Tredgett (capt), Thompson, Jonny Whiting. Replacements: Fisher, Fairs, N Bell, Smith, Price, Tuhakaraina, Walker

Whirlwind hits town – with a Tornado Snooker Martin Read – Sports Reporter The Holbrook Club was packed with snooker aficionados on Tuesday evening, many arriving early to get a ringside seat to see charismatic, colourful Jimmy White in action, a legendary pro who has played with and beaten the very best. It was a case of its all White on the night as whirlwind Jimmy despatched all comers – until he came up against surprise guest Tony Drago, the Maltese Falcon, the Tornado. The pair have notched up well over 400 century breaks between them at the top level, Jimmy scoring the majority but it was Tony who made

the highest break of the night, 136, beating Jimmy three frames to two in the top match. Earlier Jason Wells from the Holbrook Club was the first to take on fast- playing Jimmy, who, when a shot was under too much consideration, quipped: “It’s a good job we’re not paying for the lights!” Jason told us: “I played my hero and it was nerve wracking.” But, it was clear that the protagonists relished the experience of taking on a sporting great, although no quarter was expected or given. Mick Sutton, Jimmy’s agent, said: “Jimmy wants to play and wants to win!” How right he was – the pockets seemed to shrink when the amateurs were on the table. Rating

Ronnie O’Sullivan as the best player ever and best friend Alex Higgins as a great shot-maker Jimmy emphasised that he intends to keep playing: “I’ve still got ambitions to win the world title – if I didn’t think I could then I’d give up and play bad golf.” Jimmy also plays pool, commentates on his sports, loves poker has acted in three films, received the MBE from the Queen and taken tea with Ronnie Kray in Parkhurst, but snooker is his bag and it would be immensely popular if he carried off the big prize. Meanwhile Holbrook Manager Matt Russell beamed: “I’m really pleased to see a great event so well attended.”
