March of the elephants

Bringing the herds to Horsham for an ‘Elephantastic’ spectacular Horsham Rotary Club is inviting local businesses to adopt and decorate a model elephant as part of its new campaign which will help raise vital funds for a variety of local charities including Horsham-based Born Free Foundation’s new appeal to fund and build Europe's first elephant sanctuary in Tuscany. The event will also promote Horsham Town and the surrounding area throughout the summer holidays, as well as the local art scene and its fantastic artistic talent. Working with Horsham District Council and local trader's organisation, Horsham Unlimited, the Rotary Club are set to supply 150 plain elephant sculptures, which go on sale this week at prices ranging from £75 to £200 depending on size, to businesses and other organisations within a ten mile radius of Horsham town centre. Similar to Horsham’s giraffe initiative in 2013, once sponsors and associated charities have put their own creative stamp on the elephants, they will form a colourful art trail in and around the town centre for Continued on Page 2

Warnham residents are gathering information to produce the Warnham Parish neighbourhood development plan. Like so many parishes in West Sussex, Warnham sets about the task of engaging with residents to gather their views on a multitude of topics so that a vision can be set for years to come. Warnham parish residents are invited to attend the launch event at Warnham Village Hall on Hollands Way on Friday, April 24, from 7.30pm to 9pm, where they will be able to find out more information of how they can become actively involved and assist in the development of the parish plan. The Neighbourhood Development Plan concerns the countryside, environment, community, housing, economy, recreation,

amenities as well as traffic and transport. The Warnham parish has remained predominantly rural with the concentration of population within Warnham village; Kingsfold, Winterfold and Rowhook being outlying communities. The idea of the Plan is to safeguard the tranquil environment of the parish, protect its heritage and conservation area as well as seek ways in which to enhance it as a rural bespoke community. Drop-in events for residents to get involved will follow at: - Warnham Village Hall Saturday 9 May 10:00am - 2:00pm - The Owl public house, Kingsfold Tuesday 12 May 7:30pm. Visit www.warnhamplan.com for further information or ce-mail NDP4Warnham@mail.com.

Continued from Page 1 local residents and Horsham visitors to follow. Each sponsoring organisation can add their own unique non-branded design to the model elephants and display them in shop fronts, business foyers, shopping malls or other publicly accessible locations for the Elephant Safari trails which take place from July 25, until August 31, 2015, one in the town centre and the other within the nearby countryside. The unique model elephants are to be auctioned following the event and proceeds from the event will be divided across all participating charities as well as international wildlife organisation, the Born Free Foundation which was established over 30 years ago by local actress Virginia McKenna OBE. Horsham Rotary Club's John Le Rossignol said: “We’re really excited to be bringing fantastic art

find us on facebook horsham.news and family fun to the town through Horsham’s Elephantastic Safari trails. The giraffe trail in 2013 created a great sense of community spirit and attracted well over 12,000 people. With far bigger trails planned for this year, we can only imagine its popularity and success from which many important charities are set to benefit.” The elephants can be decorated by sponsoring organisation and charities in-house or outsourced to local artists or schools and community groups. For more details about how to purchase an elephant or information regarding the elephant safari trails and charities, please email: horshamrotary@btconnect.com. Charities operating in the Horsham area who wish to participate in the event, and artists who are prepared to use their talents to paint an elephant should also register with Horsham Rotary Club before the end of April.

School’s £1,000 lift for Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance Three pupils at The Focus School at Pulborough Campus have raised more than than £1,000 for Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance. The fundraising drive was spearheaded by Jemima Nash and Harriet Page, both 11, and 10-yearold Tegan Poole after two of their friends were airlifted. They held a cake sale, Name the Puppy contest, bike ride and market boot sale and raised a grand total of £1,013 in just two months. A school spokesman said: “It was a great achievement for 10 and 11 year-olds which they organized

entirely themselves with great enthusiasm.” Jemima, Harriet and Tegan were given a tour of the helicopter base last week as they presented their cheque to the pilot, doctor and paramedic. They were even allowed to sit in the back of the MD902 Explorer which flies at speeds of up to 150mph and can reach the furthest part of each county within 25 minutes. Tegan said: “It was interesting to visit the base and amazing to find out about everything the crew can do and how much equipment is on

the helicopter.” Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance recently launched its schools presentation to educate youngsters about its lifesaving work. Primary and secondary pupils can learn about how the helicopter is called out, types of missions, landing sites and major developments of the service such as night flying and blood transfusions. If you would like to register your school to receive a schools support pack please contact the air ambulance’s Community Team on 01622 833833 or email veronicaw@kssairambulance.org.uk.

Another chance to meet local election candidates Horsham Churches Together will host a meeting of all eight General Election candidates who have accepted an invitation to answer questions that reflect the particular concerns of the local Christian community. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 22, at 7pm at Kingdom Faith Church, Foundry Lane, Horsham. Ian Fletcher – Horsham Churches Together coordinator – is “delighted that the local candidates have accepted our invitation. Often the voices of the churches go unheard, or perhaps they are heard and are not seen as relevant. We are grateful

that all eight of the local candidates have offered to attend our meeting to answer questions that have been asked by the churches in Horsham. We hope that the candidates will be able to answer our questions on social and environmental issues as well as broader issues relating the United Kingdom’s relationship with the international community. This is a rare opportunity to meet the candidates and we hope that many of the local Christian community will attend, but this is not a closed meeting and all those who take an interest in the General Election as it affects Horsham will be welcome.

Horsham entrepreneurs enter Virgin business Pitch to Rich competition

New Digital legacy service from Horsham, The Soldier’s Box are pitching for a share of Richard Branson’s £1 million marketing fund. Virgin Media have launched their 2015 Pitch to Rich competition this year, giving entrepreneurs around the UK the chance to share in a £1 million prize fund to take their business to the next level. On the Pitch to Rich 2015 website, Richard Branson states “What is a business? It’s simply an idea that makes someone else’s life better”. When Darren Richmond from Horsham in West Sussex shared his digital Soldier’s Box idea with two

lifelong school friends, his intention was exactly that. To create a solution to a problem that affects each and every one of us. What happens to our digital world when we are no longer around to take care of it? How will those left behind access important services, open files and view digital photos and videos of loved ones? The modern day digital version of the Soldier’s Box was developed on the back of a common practice that started in the First World War. Soldier’s would often keep their most important documents and treasured possessions in small tins or boxes for safe keeping. In the event

of their death, their boxes would be passed to loved ones. These boxes filled with their possessions provided great comfort to bereaved families offering emotional and practical support at a difficult time. The modern day Soldier’s Box provides an online storage box where someone can store all their most important digital possessions, including photos, videos, documents, passwords, personal messages and dying wishes. The Soldier’s Box includes a highly secure yet simple mechanism to pass the contents of the box to a trustee and unlimited beneficiaries. With over a year in development and testing,

the Soldier’s Box is due to launch this summer. Darren Richmond, founder of The Soldier’s Box, comments: “We believe we have created a service that will make a difference to people’s lives. Winning the Pitch to Rich 2015 competition would mean the world to us. It will provide us with the vital funds we need to spread awareness of The Soldier’s Box when it launches.”The Soldier’s Box has entered the competition in the ‘Grow’ category. The idea has been designed, developed, market tested and will launch this summer. Anyone over the age of 18 can get a Soldier’s Box and a 14 day free trial will be available from launch. An

annual subscription to The Soldier’s Box costs £36 for 1GB of online storage space including the trustee and beneficiary process set up. The Soldier’s Box are currently offering a 20% discount those who register on the website from today. Votes for the Pitch to Rich 2015 competition can be cast until the closing date of 5th May 2015. First grandparents’ afternoon Author Helen Dunmore held for Farlington prep school makes visit to GCSE pupils Christ’s Hospital’s Year 11 pupils, who have been studying Helen Dunmore’s ‘The Siege’ for their iGCSE English Literature exam, had a very special visitor – the Orange Prize-winning author herself, who came to speak to the pupils about the book on Thursday, March 26. In the first part of her talk she discussed how an author researches and develops a historical novel like ‘The Siege’ and explained why in her view historical fiction is so important as a way of understanding the present. Farlington Prep School held its first Grandparents’ Afternoon at the end of last term. The idea was to welcome grandparents, along with friends, relatives and godparents to tour the School with the girls. The afternoon began with a rapid turnaround, sweeping lunch things away and setting up for around 70 visitors. A brief welcome was followed by refreshments and then the visitors settled to enjoy a short concert. Farlington Prep girls rose

to the challenge with choirs and the cast of ‘Annie’ singing with gusto. There were some fabulous harp, oboe and flute pieces performed too, all showcasing the confidence with which our girls share their considerable musical talents, under the excellent guidance of Mrs Thomas and Mr Dallimore. A sunny spring afternoon added to the buzz, as girls led their grandparents to their favourite parts of the School: the Forest

Helen Dunmore then took a series of questions from the floor. She had already emphasised that once a book is created it ‘belongs’ to the readers, and that pupils should feel confident and determined to read the book and to respond to it in their own way. To the pleasure of their English teachers, who share the same philosophy, the pupils showed in their fresh and interesting questions, that this particular book now belonged to them.

Family values are closely held by our happy and vibrant community and it seemed very fitting to reserve this special occasion for our grandparents, to thank them for their interest in the School and, of course, for the wonderful part that they play in the girls’ education. Lake District adventure Record Office announces online for Horsham Air Cadets access to old school records Air Cadets celebrating together at the top of a mountain in the Lake District

Cadet enjoying spectacular views at the top of a mountain in the Lake District

Residents in West Sussex are being encouraged to search a new online database for ancestors who may have gone to school in the County. The admission registers from around 100 local schools, most of which date from the 1870s to 1914, have been digitised and indexed by the family history website Find My Past. The registers vary in the level of detail they provide, but usually record a child’s name and date of birth, date of admission, father’s name and address, previous school, and date of leaving. They often record why a child

left school, with common entries being 'left the parish' or 'gone to Brighton'. But they also record when a child started work, went into domestic service or ‘left to help mother’. Or they may simply say ‘age’, which indicates that the child had reached the school leaving age of 14. Matthew Jones, Assistant County Archivist, said: “This will be a fantastic resource for people who want to find out more about their West Sussex ancestors. The records themselves are quite fragile so having access to digital copies will help us to preserve the originals for years to come. But it will

also mean that they’re available to a worldwide audience and enable family historians to search all of the admission registers simultaneously.” Anyone can access the admission registers, either by subscribing to Find My Past or by visiting West Sussex Record Office in Chichester where the subscription website is available free of charge. To find out more, contact the Record Office on 01243 753602 or visit Orchard Street, Chichester, PO19 1DD. Alternatively, visit www. westsussex.gov.uk/ro where you can also find out what other school records are available.

www.kokorouk.com Five Air Cadets and a member of staff from Horsham Air Cadets have enjoyed an action packed week of adventure training in the Lake District. The group were joined by other members of Sussex Wing for the annual training week which saw cadets take part in activities such as mountain walking, canoeing, kayaking, climbing and abseiling. Cadets utilised accommodation at the Air Cadet Adventure Training Centre in Windermere which was their base for the week. Teamwork and leadership was not only tested on the hills but also working in the Centre in group tasks including cooking, washing, making lunches and cleaning. This week long course is quite difficult to get a place on, as there are only 30 spaces for the whole of the Sussex area. Two Horsham Air Cadets, Finlay Collins (15) and Thomas Footitt (15) ended the week by climbing Scafell Pike, the highest point in England at 978m high led by an experienced

mountain leader. Officer Commanding of 1015 (Horsham) Air Cadets, Flight Lieutenant Richard Foster said: “This has been a very tiring but rewarding week for the cadets with many skills tested and knowledge gained in a wild country area. All the Cadets had a chance to experience some fantastic opportunities in the picturesque setting of the Lake District. I had the privilege to be there and see the Cadets gain confidence and gain new skills in a very short amount of time.” Adventure Training is one of many actives offered by Horsham Air Cadets, they also have the chance to do many activities including visits to RAF Stations, Flying & the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Horsham Air Cadets is recruiting, if you are interested in joining and are aged between 13-17, you can contact us on 1015@aircadets.org for details of our next open evening. We also welcome applications for adult volunteers, who can contact us on the same address.

Think you know Scouting in Horsham? A taste of Italy in Steyning

On Saturday, March 28, a new Scout District was formed in Horsham. For 20 years Scouts across the area have been organised in two Scout Districts (Horsham Weald and Horsham West), but from now on there will only be Horsham Scouts. In confirming the formation of the new District, Irene Orford, County Commissioner for West Sussex Scouts, said that this was a new chapter for Scouting in Horsham. The 19 Scout Groups and 10 Explorer Scout Units have the opportunity of working together to increase the opportunities for the young people of the town and surrounding villages to experience the fun and personal development that comes through being a Scout. Peter Scofield was appointed as the District Commissioner for the new District supported by Anthony

Smith as the Chairman. Peter Scofield said in accepting the appointment that the challenge for the new District is to enable more young people to join. There are currently over 1800 children, young people and adults involved, but there are many who cannot join. This can only change when more adults volunteer as supporters and leaders. The weekend before the District formation, Horsham Scouts were out in force in Swan Walk and the Carfax speaking with members of the public about the everyday adventure scouting can offer to both young people and adults. For many adults working to develop young people and prepare them for the future is their time to shine and putting volunteering in their CVs can make all the difference to their own careers and employ-

ment prospects too. Many Explorer Scouts and Young Leaders were out and about in the town. They enjoyed the chance to tell others about their personal experience of Scouting. Eve Chatham Explorer Scout and Young Leader said: “I think having the scouts about, actively seeking adults to help keep troops and units going really brought together the family nature of the Scout Movement which I think really helped get people to notice and consider joining the movement.” Another Young Leader, Adam Sandle said: “It was a great chance to introduce more adults into scouting and demonstrate the diversity of scouting and range of experience scouting offers.” Alan Scofield, Explorer Scout Leader said: “It was great to see our already diverse youth and adult members coming together to promote the Scout Movement and using their knowledge and enthusiasm to engage with potential future leaders.” The event engaged with adults and helped them understand the opportunities for them, but of course lots of young people dropped in to the pop up shop in Swan Walk. They were able to get an idea of the activities that can be available, canoeing, caving, camping, shooting and more. To find out more about visit www. horshamscouts.com and to express an interest in joining e-mail join@ horshamscouts.com.

The case of Wyatt v Vince – can an ex-wife really claim £1.9m 30 years after a legal separation? Hana Khodabocus Solicitor, Family Department, stevensdrake On March 11, 2015, Kathleen Wyatt was granted permission by the Supreme Court to continue with her application for a financial order against her former husband, Dale Vince. At a first glance, these facts do not appear to be exceptional; however it is the background to the case that makes it highly unusual. Background Ms Wyatt and Mr Dale met whilst at university in 1981 and married shortly afterwards. They had one child together and Ms Wyatt also had a child from a former relationship who was accepted as part of their family. During their marriage, the parties lived meagrely, surviving on benefits. They separated after a short marriage in 1983, and both parties moved on with new partners, Ms Dale going on to have two more children. Their divorce was finalised in 1992. In the late 1990s, Mr Dale started a green energy business called Ecotricity, which gradually became successful and today is estimated to be worth around £57m. In contrast, Ms Wyatt continued to struggle financially. Proceedings to date In 2011, Ms Wyatt issued an application to start financial remedy proceedings against Mr Dale and was seeking a £1.9m lump sum. Mr Dale in turn applied to strike out her application on the ground that there was no reasonable prospect of it succeeding.

At first instance, the district judge dismissed Mr Dale’s application, which he sought to appeal. The Court of Appeal overturned the first decision, which led to Ms Wyatt appealing to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has now unanimously ruled in her favour by allowing her appeal. Ms Wyatt will need to return to the High Court in order to proceed with her original application. In response to the Supreme Court’s judgment, Mr Dale said: “I feel we all have the right not to be looking over our shoulders. This could signal open season for people who had brief relationships a quarter of a century ago…” Opinion It is unlikely that Ms Wyatt will receive £1.9m that she is claiming on the basis that her application for financial relief was made after considerable delay and the fact that the marriage itself was of a short duration. However, the Supreme Court did consider that she had made a significant contribution to the welfare of the family by looking after their children, and such a contribution should not be confined to any particular time period i.e. during the marriage or prior to separation. For this reason, the court concluded that a financial order for a modest lump sum to help Ms Wyatt re-house herself comfortably may possibly be justified. This case has set a precedent in that the court chose not to close the door on a financial application made after a very lengthy period of separa-

tion between the parties. However, this case is highly fact-specific, not least because of the 30 year separation between the parties that preceded Ms Wyatt’s application, and the great fortune amassed by Mr Dale since their divorce. It is therefore highly unlikely that similar cases will be heard in the lower courts throughout the country. Notwithstanding this, the case

highlights the importance of resolving financial issues at the same time as a divorce. As demonstrated by the parties in this case, a failure to do so will mean that financial claims can still be made by former spouses regardless of how long ago their divorce was finalised. Indeed, whatever the outcome of this case, both Ms Wyatt and Mr Dale will incur massive legal costs which

could have been avoided had proper advice been sought at the time of their separation. For more information about this article, or for advice on divorce and the associated financial settlement, please contact Hana Khodabocus on 01293 596959 or Peter Alison on 01293 596935. Last year Nathanael successfully auditioned for The X Factor achieving four yes's at Wembley Arena placing him in the top 23 boys at bootcamp. He made the difficult decision to pull out prior to bootcamp as the dates clashed with a world premiere musical he was already cast in with National Youth Music Theatre. The show, BRASS went on the win

Best Musical Production 2014 in the UK Theatre Awards and Nathanael has just finished recording the original cast CD which will be released in June. Next month he will be filmed singing one of the songs from the show as part on an Arts Council funded project. Nathanael will audition again for X factor this year. Nathanael has performed as pre show support on the Forum Stage at the LG Arena in Birmingham for both Robbie Williams and Michael Buble and has been invited back as pre show support for The Vamps

later this year in May. Nathanael has two local performances coming up: his first headline gig at The Latest Bar in Brighton on Saturday, April 4, which is nearly sold out and the TeenStar regional final in Brighton on Sunday, April 12. Details of Nathanael's appearances and debut single can be found on twitter @Natinfinum and Facebook at www.facebook.com/nathanaelsaul. Nathanael's single can be downloaded via SMS by texting BITFL to 85888 and costs £1.

Midge Ure coming to The Capitol

In 1995, Midge delivered his fourth solo album, Breathe, to BMG just 10 years after the phenomenal successes of Band Aid and Live Aid. Always one to ring the changes, this album had a very Celtic feel with

a plethora of acoustic instruments from uilleann pipes to mandolins and accordions alongside Midge’s trademark soaring electric guitar riffs. The title track was picked up by

Swatch watches and headed their most successful advertising campaign ever. The album went triple platinum and was a massive success all over Europe. After the successful reformation of Ultravox in 2009, Midge feels it’s time to revisit his Celtic roots, and will perform Breathe in its entirety for the first time in 2015. Ably accompanied by the two musicians from India Electric Co, recreating the nature of the album. Midge will also play a selection of his other hits like Vienna, Dancing with Tears in My Eyes, Fade to Grey and If I Was, as well as songs from his recently released album Fragile. The show takes place on Sunday, May 3, at 7.30pm at The Capitol, Horsham. Tickets cost £19 and are available from the box office on 01403 750220 or at www.thecapitolhorsham.com.

PETs POST

Sponsored by

Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about the dangers of leaving dogs in cars.If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.

Remember - dogs do die in cars abbi moon RSPCA

As the warm Spring days show their face now is a good time to remind ourselves how hot the inside of a car can get even when outside it feels quite mild. Dogs die in hot cars, it’s a message that the RSPCA, and many other welfare charities, have been sending out for decades but still dozens of dogs die needlessly each year and hundreds of people leave their dogs in cars thinking “it’s not too hot outside” and “it won’t happen to me”. I have a simple message it does happen to

ordinary people like you and I. People whose dogs die in cars are rarely cruel people treating their dogs with contempt. They are ordinary people who make a terrible judgement decision. The dogs are usually extremely loved pets whose owners are heartbroken at their loss. It doesn’t make it any less of a crime (you can be convicted under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 for allowing your dog to

If you are going somewhere, ask yourself; do I need to take the dog? Can you take your dog home before you pop to the shop? suffer in a hot car) and it doesn’t make it excusable in the slightest. There’s no safe way to leave your dog in car, unless you have specialist ventilation systems specifically for animals fitted. Dogs need a constant fresh stream of cool air to cool down their bodies so leaving the window down and water is not good enough. As dogs don't sweat having an air stream is really important. A few years ago, I had a thermometer on the back seat of my car and it was a shock how cool it

could be outside whilst being quite toasty inside the car. There isn’t a ‘safe’ temperature inside a car for a dog; every animal is different. Some will be affected by even the smallest of increases in temperature. I don’t think it’s worth taking the risk so if you are going somewhere, ask yourself; do I need to take the dog? Can you take your dog home before you pop to the shop? If you’re going out for a meal, can you choose a dogfriendly venue? If you do come across a dog in a car, observe from a distance. Going up to the windows may stress the dog and make the situation worse. If the dog is panting excessively, appears to be distressed or unconscious, dial 999. If you don’t feel the dog is in immediate danger, then you can call the national RSPCA on 0300 1234 999. You’ll need details of the car, such as it’s registration number, make, model and colour and where the car is parked. If you can take a photo, that can also help. Of course, it’s not just cars; conservatories and caravans have the same heat-retaining qualities. So where ever you leave your dog, make sure it’s safe, no matter what the weather may have in store that day. Dogs left at home will need somewhere to go in order to stay at a comfortable temperature, water, the opportunity to go to the toilet and something to do to prevent them getting bored.

Could your pet have osteoarthritis? Osteoarthritis is an inflammation of the joint and surrounding tissues which results in the progressive degeneration of the joint. It is a common condition in dogs, cats and people and tends to occur in older age through general ‘wear and tear’. About 20% of dogs and cats have osteoarthritis and it is a significant cause of discomfort, pain and poor quality of life for our pets! The signs of osteoarthritis will vary depending on which joints are involved, the age of the pet and the severity of the condition. As osteoarthritis is more common in the older pet, many owners see these signs as simply part of the ageing process. In dogs, the first sign usually seen is lameness as the dog tries to put more of its weight on its unaffected legs. Another common sign is stiffness with the dog finding it a struggle to get up or lay down. In cats, osteoarthritis is often harder to recognise as cats do not tend go ‘lame’. The most common signs of osteoarthritis in cats are decreased activity levels and reduced ability to jump Osteoarthritis is often suspected from the age of the pet, the clinical

history and a physical examination. Osteoarthritis is confirmed with xrays showing characteristic changes in the affected joints. As in people, there are a number of treatment and management options available for both dogs and cats. Response to these different options however can be variable. Achieving and maintaining your pet’s ideal body weight is important. Obesity increases the amount of weight a joint must support making the osteoarthritis worse. Weight reduction alone can often offer significant improvement in the clinical signs of osteoarthritis. It is important to keep up the exercise with arthritic patients, to maintain muscle, help prevent weight gain and to provide some stimulation for your pet. There are no fixed rules as to how much exercise, but it should be the same amount and type each day. The exercise should be ‘within capacity’ – the pet should not be stiffer or more painful the next day as a result of the walk. Multiple short walks can better suit some animals. Hydrotherapy or myotherapy can be good options, especially if patients cannot walk far.

Osteoarthritis is often treated medically with the use of non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAIDs). These drugs are very effective at treating the signs of osteoarthritis by reducing inflammation and pain; they unfortunately do little to slow down the underlying progression of the disease. As such, the osteoarthritis gradually gets worse over time. Nutraceutical joint supplements containing two disease modifying agents, chondroitin sulphate and glucosamine hydrochloride may also help. Oral consumption of glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulphate is believed to increase the rate of joint repair, reduce inflammation and so reduce pain. Occasionally, surgery may be appropriate from some pets with osteoarthritis. It is important that pets with osteoarthritis have a warm and comfortable place to rest.

Remember to chip your pets, says RSPCA Two Sussex cats have been returned to their owners on the same day all thanks to their microchips. One was returned following three weeks stuck in a garage, and another following 18 months of being missing and then spending several days in an enclosed back yard. Both owners were traced thanks to microchips, and the RSPCA is issuing a reminder to owners about how important it is to get their pets chipped, and keep these details updated. Honey, a one year-old calico-coloured cat, was found in a padlocked garage with no windows in Caraway Close, Crawley, where she is believed to have been trapped for nearly three weeks after the garage owner installed a new door. She was discovered on Wednesday, March 25, after a passer-by heard crying noises coming from inside. The RSPCA was called and after tracking down the garage owner we found a distressed Honey inside. After being taken to the vet and traced the delighted owner, who lived half a mile away was re-united the next day and it turned out Honey had been missing since mid February, around the same time the garage owner last visited his property and padlocked the door. The second cat, an eight year-old black tom cat called Spider), was found on Thursday, March 26, after he had been missing from his owner, who had moved to London from Brighton, for a year-and-a-half. He was found in an enclosed back yard in Marine Parade, Brighton, where it is believed he had been for several days. A member of the public reported

Dealing with senior pet moments Due to improved veterinary care, knowledge and dietary habits, our pets are now living longer than they ever have before. One consequence of this is that pets, along with their owners and vets, are faced with a whole new set of age-related problems usually depending on the species and breed in question. Just like humans, animals once they get to a certain age – also forget things or get confused. Animals can certainly suffer from “petzheimers” as I like to call it, which is very similar to what some people suffer from. The difference is that it is not through conversation we notice the signs of this Canine or Feline “Cognitive Dysfunction”, but rather through altered behaviour and change in habits. The affected animal is suddenly behaving oddly, vocalising randomly, soiling inappropriately, sleeping a lot – or not at all - and simply just being a completely different “person”. So when does a pet officially become “old” - senior or geriatric? It varies depending on species and breed, but cats and small dogs are generally considered senior at the age of 7 and geriatric after 10 years. Larger breed dogs tend to have shorter life spans and are considered senior or even geriat-

ric when they are approximately 6 years of age if they are very large. Owners tend to want to think of their pet's age in human terms. While it is not as simple as "1 human year = X cat/dog years", there are calculations that can help put a pet's age in human terms. Senior tips of the week:

(1) To age your pet correctly according to breed and size please check out this informative website www.calculatorcat.com for both cats and dogs. (2) Contacting your vet as there may be supportive measures and treatment for your “absentminded” senior pet.

the issue to the RSPCA after they said they had heard him miaow-ing. A microchip was out of date, but contained the details of the local vet, who revealed the owner was living 50 miles away in Bermondsey, London. They had previously lived near the courtyard in Brighton but moved away, and had been missing Spider for 18 months. RSPCA inspector Liz Wheeler said: “These two cases show how important it is to get your cat microchipped, and keep those details updated. “Poor Honey must have felt so anxious in that dark, windowless garage for all that time - she could have easily starved to death in there as it was used as storage space and not opened very often. “She was unlucky to get stuck in there, but then very lucky a passerby heard her. “She shot out at full speed when I opened the garage - it was a good job I had some food handy to entice her back to me. She was unhurt but pretty hungry, and skinny - I don’t think there was much food or water. “Spider was not trapped for so long but was still incredibly nervous after being in that courtyard for a few days. We do not know what must have happened to him for the 18 months in between being found and reported missing - but the owner was ecstatic to find him again after so long. “He was well fed, though, so I suspect he had been cared for by someone in the meantime.” For more information about microchipping, please ask your vet or visit http://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/general/microchipping.

The Malt House, Amberley A fantastic Grade II Listed detached house with over 2,900 sq.ft of accommodation (including garage and cellar) offered for sale chain free is being marketed by Guy Leonard & Company. This attractive home is extremely deceptive with excellent accommodation and is coming to the market for the first time since 1977. The property gives potential buyers an opportunity to modernise and adapt to suit their own taste, but it already benefits from generous and well-planned accommodation with exposed wooden beams and a thatched roof, which in our opinion is in good order and an integral garage. The accommodation comprises an entrance hall leading to a cosy living room, which features a beautiful inglenook fireplace. There is a spacious kitchen/dining room with stable door out to the garden and separate door leading to the cellar, with access into the utility room and door to the integral garage. The formal sitting room is to the right of the hall and has a door to the side entrance, which is a good space and could be utilised as a study, and a further door leads into the inner hall where there is a cloakroom. To the first floor there is an extremely generous principal suite with a bathroom and triple aspect bedroom, family bathroom, two further spacious double bedrooms and another bedroom previously used as a study. The wall enclosed garden comprises a flagstone patio which surrounds the property and is inset with a lawn area and shingle for ease of maintenance. The Guide Price is £650,000 for the freehold interest. An internal viewing is highly recommended to appreciate this home and its convenient location within the village. For further information or an appointment to view, please contact Guy Leonard & Company on 01903 742354 or go and visit www. guyleonard.co.uk.

Palmer wins on opening weekend at Oulton Park Motor Sport Dave Smith – Sports Editor Will Palmer enjoyed a great start to his 2015 Duo BRDC F4 campaign as he took a win, podium and the championship lead at Oulton Park. The 18-year-old had been in fine form throughout testing on Friday, setting the overall pace in the damp with a lap of 1:48.620s. He claimed P1 on the grid for the opening race of the season following a titanic battle with his teammate Harri Newey. Palmer made a strong getaway and leapt into an early lead in the first race. Newey was overtaken by South African Sebastian Lanzetti for second and it took until Knickerbrook on lap three for Newey to retake the Hillspeed driver. The 16-year-old attempted to close the gap to Will but Palmer extended his advantage and strolled home to victory by 4.815s with Lanzetti taking

third. With the reverse grid format for race two, Will started in eighth place and had made his way up to fourth by the end of the opening lap. Pole-sitter Sisa Ngebulana spun on the warm-up lap which left Manxman Chris Mealin to lead the field away with Ciaran Haggerty in close pursuit. Palmer caught up Tom Jackson but was struggling to find a way past, which allowed Jack Bartholomew to close up and a three-way fight soon developed. It took until lap eight before Will dived inside Jackson and Bartholomew followed him through. Up front, Mealin extended his advantage over Haggerty and came home to take the win with Palmer holding off Bartholomew to stand on the podium once again. Having set the fifth-fastest lap across the first two races, Palmer lined up on the third row behind Chris Mealin, Ciaran Haggerty, Har-

ri Newey and Jordan Albert. Newey made a good start and was pressuring leader Albert immediately but Palmer had a less successful getaway and was relegated to eighth. Newey spun off and rejoined in 16th, promoting Palmer to seventh, and he soon improved on this by passing Bartholomew for sixth. As the race headed towards its conclusion, Ciaran Haggerty made a number of mistakes which allowed Will to take fifth behind Albert, Mealin, Rodrigo Fonseca and Jackson. Will said: "It's been a really good weekend for me and I'm really pleased that we've been able to start the season so strongly. The team did a great job all weekend as we saw with a one-two in qualifying and the first race. There are a few things we should be able to improve for the next race so hopefully we can carry this momentum through to Rockingham and be even stronger there."

Mark Greet was first Horsham Jogger over the line Athletics Julia Johnson – Horsham Joggers The 6th Brighton Marathon kicked off the marathon season for Horsham Joggers last Sunday, with 22 runners from the club taking part. Further afield, Natasha Heasman completed the Paris Marathon in a time of 4:17:51. In the Brighton 10k Neil Boniface finished 18th in 31:30 followed by Guy Gilder 45;31 and Paul Arnold 53:26.

A contingent of Atlantis swimmers took the opportunity of top level competition competing in the Guildford City Level 1 Long Course Meet over last week-end in preparation for the SE Regional Championships next month. Fifteen year old speedster Hamish Milne-Skillman, a certain National qualifier, took the honours with golds in his Age Group 50 and 100 freestyle events with times of 25.58 and 57.53. Fellow sprinter Cavan Murphy (17) also swam well with a PB time of 32.64 for his 50 breaststroke and a solid 57.30 100 free. The girls were led by junior club captain Lily Davis who collected gold and silver in her 100 and 50 breaststroke events with times of 1.15.44 and 33.94. Her young team mates responded with some spar-

kling performances in their Age Group categories. Medley specialist Rebecca Barber (12) took gold in both the 400 and 200 IM events together with bronzes in the 100, 200 and 400 freestyle. Ethel Whyman (12) collected silvers in her favourite 50,100 and 200 backstroke events together with a bronze in the 400 IM. Amelia Wright (13) collected silvers in the 50 and 200 breaststrokes together with a bronze in the100. Excellent results were also recorded by Lucie Lee (17) with a 30.85 PB in the 50 butterfly and Freya Fulcher (14) 1.12.87 for a place in the 100 backstroke final. Head Coach Bill Penny commented "This has been a worthwhile experience for our young swimmers and has given them a valuable foretaste as to what to expect at the Regional Championships next month and will hopefully motivate them to train harder with that goal in mind"

Storrington’s Leighton Aspell wins the Grand National - Again! horse racing

Martin Read – Sports Reporter

Storrington jockey Leighton Aspell pulled off a major horse racing coup by winning the Grand National in consecutive years – the first jockey to do so since Brian Fletcher won on Red Rum in 1973 and 1974. And, 38 year old Leighton did it on two different horses. Last year he romped home on little fancied Pineau De Re, while last Saturday on his eighth National appearance he was aboard Many Clouds, carrying the second heaviest weight. Leighton said: “We knew we’d got a good horse” – it won the Hennessy Gold Cup in November, but was completely overlooked by the pundits after coming in a disappointing sixth in last month’s Cheltenham Gold Cup. Leighton’s tactics echoed last year’s triumph, maintaining a good position before taking the lead in the closing stages and winning comfortably in a fast time at 25-1 again. Runner up in 2003 after winning the Welsh National two years before and then again in 2005

Leighton retired in 2007 to work as an assistant trainer at John Dunlop’s Arundel Castle yard until the camaraderie of the track coaxed him back. Before the race trainer Oliver Sherwood praised Leighton’s horsemanship, but was reduced to tears in the winner’s enclosure saying: “Leighton kept him out of trouble and he went round foot perfect.” Meanwhile Many Clouds, the youngest winner for 13 years, and close to collapsing had to be hosed down to combat overheating. All eyes had been on Tony McCoy in his last National but, for the second year running this was Leighton’s day and despite triumphing in the world’s greatest steeple chase, earning a share of the £561,300 winning prize pot, he was as cool afterwards as he had been throughout the race, saying: “It was wonderful and we’ll certainly celebrate tonight! I asked some big questions, but he dug deep. He’s all heart and I knew he’d run to the line. That’s the best ride I’ve had in the National. I just hoped his battery would last out, and it did!” Popular Leighton won praises from his fellow jockeys, runner up Paddy Brennan commenting: “It was won by a true gentleman.”

Cricket clubs receive funding boost Cricket Dave Smith – Sports Editor Local cricket clubs across Sussex have received a financial boost with the news that £80,000 has been invested into facilities at

thirty clubs from the England & Wales Cricket Trust Small Grant Scheme which is supported by Waitrose. The Sussex Cricket Board is responsible for distributing the grants which range between £1000

and £4000 per club. The money can be used for a variety of things including improving the long term sustainability of clubs, saving or raising money and reducing operating costs; with the overall aim of creating a sustainable future for af-

filiated cricket clubs. Four clubs in our District, Horsham, Billingshurst, Southwater and Horsham Trinity have benefitted from the grants which will go towards projects such as improving kitchens and indoor and outdoor social areas to help clubs become the heart of their local community. Horsham had to make a 600 mile round trip for their second relegation play off but despite holding their Lake District opponents to a draw they made the long haul home knowing that they had bowed out of the national league after cruelly losing their previous decider against Bristol Firebrands from the last hit of the match. Originally destined to visit Merseyside for their final play off, Horsham’s game was switched to Kendal at short notice when that club slipped down to the penultimate spot in the Conference North League after being docked five points for fielding an ineligible player, allowing Liverpool Sefton to escape the danger zone. In the vital match Kendal took the lead early in the second half. Rebecca Williams equalised 22 minutes later but Horsham needed to win to stay up. Horsham suffered ill fortune in the run in but, looking back over the entire season paid the penalty for two lengthy losing spells after heading the table following two wins and a draw from their opening three matches. A change of captain and coach late in the season revitalised the team but, unlike recent years, Horsham could

Farlington girls qualify at Sands Farm Farlington team at Sands Farm

Equestrian Dave Smith – Sports Editor Farlington equestrian grass roots team have experienced another great day of competition at Sands Farm. A team of four consisting of Lucia Mayhew riding Sammy, Roseanna Savage riding Polo, Georgia Stephens riding Jeepers and Lucy Bugler riding Buttons entered the 60/65cm class and were looking to get a good result as this was a championship qualifier. Lucia and Roseanna went clear, Georgia had an unfortunate stop but continued and finished the course and Lucy’s pony ran out of the last jump but determinedly Lucy got him over and the team finished. With only the top five teams going through it was a nervous wait for the girls before finally finishing third. In the 70/75cm class Megan Speers riding Hector, Suzie Lunt riding Billy, Lucia Mayhew riding Sammy and Roseanna Savage riding Polo all rode very well with Megan and Suzie going clear, Roseanna had a stop at jump 9 but finished the course and Lucia’s pony also decided to stop at jump 9 and was unable to finish. The team ended on four faults and were placed third out of a very strong class.

Junior Football Round Up

Sparrows U18 girls had a good win Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor Chesworth Rovers U11 3 - 1 Royal Utd U11 Chesworth Rovers U11 played a pre cup final warm up match against a strong Royal Utd team at the Forest pitches. Chesworth took an early lead through Tom in the first half with Leo in goal hitting fine form keeping the Royals attack at bay. The second half saw Callum swing a corner into the box for Seb to smash home. Callum got himself on the score sheet by jumping highest to meet Tom’s corner with a brilliant header past the keeper for 3 - 0. Royals grabbed a consolation goal to make it 3 - 1. Game 2 saw Tom and Seb on the score sheet again. Nyle and Regan joined them for a 4 - 0 win.

Horsham Sparrows Sparrows Under 12 – An impressive performance from the team saw them run out comfortable winners against local opposition Horsham Baptist and Ambassadors. This firmly secured third place in the table with one match left to play. Sparrows Under 13 – Horsham Sparrows entertained high-flying Crawley United. This was a competitive game with good performances from both sides. Crawley ran out 4 - 0 winners but the match was closer than the score-line suggests. There were many good performances from the Sparrows but Frazer F was Man of the match for a composed performance in the heart of the defence. Sparrows Under 11 girls – An away game at Cuckfield Cosmos saw the girls share the points with

an impressive 0-0 draw. All the team worked really hard and deserved the praise from their coach and parents. Hannah was girl of the match and Aimee picked up the accolade of most improved player for the day. Sparrows Under 15 Girls – The team travelled to Crawley Wasps and won their semi final 2-9 which saw them reach the cup final. Goals from Jazmine Y (3), Ruby E (2), Fliss L, Lily K and Daisy B sealed the victory while MOTM went to 3 players Fliss, Ruby and Daisy. The girls play in the final against Angmering on Sunday April 26, spectators most welcome (visit website for more details www.horshamsparrows.co.uk) Sparrows Under 18 Girls – The girls started with a strong belief that they would upset the odds against a quality team from Reigate. Amber opened the scoring for sparrows with an excellent 20 yard drive into the corner leaving the ‘keeper with no chance. South Park equalised within 10 minutes but a tenacious run by Hannah and a deflected shot flew into the net shortly before half time. The second half was end to end stuff and midway through the half, Charlotte scored from the edge of the box giving sparrows a 3-1 lead. The final 20 minutes was open with chances at both ends before South Park pulled one back with 5 minutes to go. The nerves on the touch line were settled when Charlotte hit another pile driver from 20 yards which flew over the keepers head into the back of the net giving the girls an excellent well deserved 4-2 win.

Weakened Heath lose but reserves finish runners up Saturday April 11 - Sussex County League Div 1 Lancing 3 - 0 Broadbridge Heath Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor With six first team regulars already missing from his side, Broadbridge Heath manager Steve Painter knew the trip to an inform Lancing was going to be very difficult but when hit by a further two late withdrawals on the morning of the match, it meant bringing in some inexperienced players from the Reserves and the task then became almost impossible. Heath did manage to keep the score level at 0-0 going in at halftime but there were rare moments of quality from the side, Lancing upped their game in the second period, took the lead within two minutes of the restart through Ross Adams, added a second midway through the half from substitute Neil Munday and completed the scoring in the 70th minute with a goal from Michael Williamson. Painter was very disappointed with his team’s performance after the game, even with a weakened side he knows the players are capable of playing much better than they did, and he will be hoping to get a few more senior players back and will expect a much improved performance on Saturday when Heath play championship contenders Littlehampton Town at the Leisure Centre. Meanwhile in the County League Reserve Premier Division, a weakened Heath Reserves confirmed the runners-up position with two games remaining in their first ever season in the Premier Division, and they did it in style by completing the double over league champions Saltdean United at the Leisure Centre, the only goal of the match was scored by Adam Wicking in the 75th minute, a 30 yard thunderbolt into the bottom corner of the net, a goal worthy of winning any game. Heath Reserve Team: M Chester, Wicking, Robinson, Alfieri, S Chester, Bacon, Meech, Clark, Maxted, Copestake.

Sullivan header lifts YM up to sixth Saturday April 11- Sussex County League Div 1 Horsham YMCA 1 – 0 Eastbourne Town Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter A first half Nick Sullivan header was all that separated Horsham YMCA and visitors Eastbourne Town last Saturday, as Peter Buckland’s side returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory at Gorings Mead. YM bounced back from their Easter Monday defeat to league leaders Dorking Wanderers with a composed performance against fourthplaced Town, and the three points lifts them up to sixth spot in Division 1. Manager Buckland commented: “It had an end of season feel to it, but the fact does remain that against one of the better sides in the league we have won again. It’s just bizarre. “That’s Eastbourne Town and Newhaven we’ve beaten twice now. We’ve beaten Pagham, Dorking Wanderers and Littlehampton Town, and yet we’ve had some ridiculous results that have cost us so dearly.

“I guess it is hard to motivate ourselves when there is nothing to play for, but what I said before the game was that I’d like to think that as a group of players they are out there for ninety minutes of football, which is why they’re here and what they love doing.” Eastbourne failed to register a single shot on target all game, much thanks to a disciplined YM defence that was marshalled superbly by man of the match Matt Crane. At the opposite end, Nick Sullivan’s twenty-third goal of the season secured the win as he headed home an inch perfect cross from Luke Gedling, who recorded his 100th game for YM, eight minutes before the break. Buckland concluded: “If we can finish fifth or sixth, we can turn around and say that we have had a bad season, but we’ve finished fifth in the league. That’s not so bad, and it’s important to me that we keep that mentality and that spirit going and roll it on into next year.” YM Team: Lockwood, Carden, Crane, O’Carroll, Evans, Dugdale, Gedling, D. Sullivan (J. Brown 81), D. Brown, Schaaf, N. Sullivan. Unused Subs: Fox, Gathern.

Saturday April 11 - Ryman League Division One South Faversham Town 2 – 0 Horsham Horsham’s very small chance of escaping relegation was finally dealt a fatal blow in Dom Di Paola’s first game in charge at promotion chasing Faversham Town. It was certainly too late in the day for the new manager to influence the Hornets’ fate for this season and his efforts must now turn to next season in the Sussex County League, to be renamed the Macron Store Southern Combination Football League. Next season will be the Hornets first outside the Isthmian League for over four decades and will contain a number of interesting and tricky local derbies for the team as they attempt to make their stay at this level a one season occurrence. Just how many of the current squad will remain next season is to be seen but with only the injured duo of Tom Bold and Lewis Hamilton and ex manager Storey the only players

missing Di Paola had a near full squad to choose from. In the early stages both teams exchanged efforts on goal but the difficult playing surface favoured Faversham’s long ball game and their tall forwards height advantage was causing Horsham problems; as it has to teams all season with the Kent side scoring over one hundred goals. Arguably Horsham’s best player this season, ‘keeper Gareth Williams, made the first of many good saves during the game, saving well from David Botterill’s header as the home side looked to cement their play off place. As the pressure built on the Hornets’ goal Williams saved well again, this time from Charley Robertson. Williams was eventually beaten on twenty five minutes however when a quick passing move from defence put Faversham’s Dean Grant in on goal from where he shot passed the Horsham ‘keeper. The home side continued to press and the only surprise as the referee called half time was that Faversham’s lead was not a goal or two more. However this was an all together more determined and organised Horsham, especially in defence, and if Di Paula has instilled this in them in such a short time then next season

the team should reap the rewards. Straight from the restart the superb Williams was called on to once again thwart the home side; this time diving to push Wayne Wilson’s shot around the post. Faversham began to get frustrated and collected a few yellow cards as the free scoring team failed to add to their solitary goal. For the Hornets Camara and Gilbert were also cautioned as they battled to stem the tide of Faversham attacks and in an attempt to turn the tide Di Paula sent on Hadi, Izokun and Berry for Obersteller, Hope and Camara. The changes failed to inspire any threat to Faversham and home keeper Robert French remained fairly untroubled. Five minutes from time the match, and Horsham’s Ryman League status, was over when Matt Bourne’s bullet header from Wilson’s free kick flew into the net. With two games remaining there is nothing left to play for apart from pride and the chance for some of the players to show the new manager they are maybe not as bad as the results would suggest. Williams, Hope (Izokun 77) Rogers, Obersteller (Hadi 65) Byrne, Gilbert, Branford, Welch, McCreadie, Nwachukwu, Camara (Berry 80). Unused Subs: Frankland, Cusdin

Horsham rounded off the season in style with a resounding 92-3 win at home to already relegated Hastings & Bexhill. In the perfect conditions the Green and Whites broke a series of club records since the advent of league rugby namely biggest win 92-3, most tries scored in a game 14, most league points in a season 101, most points scored in a season 806, least points conceded in a season 239, and most tries scored in a season 120. Individual honours go to top try scorer Jamie Gibbs with 17, top points scorer Tom Johnson with 167 and a special mention to both Johnny Ordidge and Ben Rush from Matamata, in Waikato, New Zealand, who were the only players to play in every game. It was a performance that delighted Horsham head coach Nick Stocker. He said: “We were in a celebratory mood having secured the title a few weeks ago. We tried to play champagne rugby and this was a fine way to end the season. We now need to focus on the cup final.” Horsham started quickly and following good phase play a pen-

alty was taken as a scrum which resulted in a pushover try for Richard Tredgett after 3 minutes. The Green and Whites then scored a further two tries in three minutes when the ball was spun wide and Gibbs made a break for a fine try finished by Mills. Ordidge then made an incisive break and the ball was spun wide for James Whiting to score. Both tries were converted by Tom Johnson and after 18 minutes Horsham were leading 19-0. Hastings & Bexhill pegged Horsham back with a penalty but the pressure was soon on again as Horsham added a further three tries in the final ten minutes of the half. Following a scrum penalty James Whiting scored his second try, and then Tredgett scored his second try from the back of the scrum and on the stroke of half time Matt Stone scored out wide meaning Horsham entered the break 38-3 up. In the second half Horsham turned on the style and added a further eight tries. Ordidge burst through the middle to score and Thompson scored out wide following several phases. Then in a purple patch the Green and Whites scored four tries in eight minutes. Scott Price broke several tackles to score under the posts, Jonny Whiting unselfishly passed to Giles Barber in support to score, Jonny Whiting scored after good phase play, and Barber scored

his second try to take Horsham into a 78-3 lead after 70 minutes. Horsham’s attacking was relentless as Hastings & Bexhill’s heads started to drop. A fine break was made by James Whiting which was taken on by Will Bell, and Goward stormed over from 25 yards. Jonny Whiting then drove over to score his second try in the final minute after a tap penalty. Eleven tries were converted by Johnson. Stocker singled out the following players for praise: “Liam Brady has really started to develop his handling and competed well against a big lumpy set of forwards. It was good to have Matt Stone back from injury and Giles Barber showed his pace. Richard Tredgett was my man of the match for a couple of tries, his tackling and he carried well. Johnny Ordidge had a good game, Will Bell was consistency personified, James Whiting ran some great support lines and carried with purpose and Jamie Gibbs was always threatening.” Horsham attempt to secure an historic league and cup double at East Grinstead on May 9 when they face the winners of Crowborough and Haywards Heath in the final of the Bob Rogers Sussex Cup. Horsham Team: Bell; James Whiting, Ordidge, Gibbs, Mills; Johnson, Rush; Brady, Stone (Smith 40), Barber; Jonny Whiting, Goward; Fisher, Thompson, Tredgett (Price 40)

Boro survive in a good club season Saturday April 11 - London 3 South East League Park House 7 - 15 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read – Sports Reporter In their last game of the campaign Pulborough maintained their league

status with a welcome, if unaccustomed; away win – against the Kent side they beat at home in October’s seasonal opener, Park House - condemning them to relegation. Lewes and Hastings also go down, Boro finishing eighth on 38 points, one ahead of Gillingham Anchorians. There was all to play for in this final

league match, which had an extra edge because Anchorians were playing nearby and if they beat Bromley and Boro lost then Boro would have been for the drop. But despite starting slowly and conceding a converted try Boro moved up a gear, easing the tension and winning easily enough in the end to secure their league fu-

ture for next season. Seven nil down at half time Boro turned with the wind and slope in their favour and began to assert control, closing out Park House. Dan Brown crossed the line ahead of a Tom Hoey penalty before Dan Paige’s try was converted by Frazer Oliphant-Hope to give Boro the decisive 15-7 win. Team Manager Roger Hunt told the District Post: “After getting

back into this league our pre season aim was to build up the club standings. The seconds and thirds have been promoted and the firsts have stayed up, so all in all that’s pretty satisfying. “We’ve got some good reserves coming through and, looking ahead to next season we want the feeder sides to make further progress and consolidate the firsts higher up the table.”
