A voluntary search dog team that helps police search for missing and vulnerable people has been honoured with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. ALSAR Search Dogs Sussex was founded in 2003 after the disappearance of Sarah Payne. It is a volunteer search and rescue dog team that assists the police in looking for missing vulnerable people across Sussex and the neighbouring counties. The team provides a 24-hour, 365-days-a-year, on-call service to the police providing nationally qualified search dogs, handlers and support personal. Members are capable of deploying at any time of the day and night, in all weather conditions and terrain. The team is called upon for help 25 to 30 times a year, commonly searching for people with mental health problems, dementia and learning disabilities. It currently has 19 members who come from all walks of life and include an airline pilot and landscape gardener. They come together one day a week to train in a variety of rural locations across Sussex, with 10 dogs which include border collies, spaniels, a terrier and a number of cross breeds. Dogs are recruited from a beginners' course run by the team that anyone can attend to see if their dog has a talent for search work. The dogs are a valuable resource in lowland search because they use scent to locate the missing person; this means they can find someone who is out of sight. The group's chairman, Steve Ball, attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace along with his daughter

Thomas, 18, rewrites the record Manhunt launched for books at South of England show commuting criminal Detectives are hunting for a commuting criminal who strikes in Sussex and have appealed for information through the Crimewatch television programme. They hope the leads offered by viewers might help find Simon Knights, 39. Officers believe Knights uses the rail network to move from town to town dressed smartly in a jacket, shirt and trousers, committing burglaries and then getting the next train home. Detectives from police forces in Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Kent, Essex and the Metropolitan Police are looking for Knights and a £2,500 reward has been put up for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of him for at least one of the offences. It is thought that Knights is stealing cash and jewellery from homes to fund his gambling addiction, selling off any jewellery and spending the cash in betting shops, casinos and on fruit machines. Thousands of pounds worth of jewellery have been stolen during the more than a dozen break-ins that Knights is suspected of being
Talented wood worker Thomas Streeter wrote his name in the record books by winning a prestige South of England title for the second year running. And then he vowed to continue his cherished craft until he is 90. The skilful 18-year-old won the admiration of tens of thousands of people at the South of England Show with his charming entry that captured the coveted Young Craftsman of the Year award. It is the first time anyone has taken the title twice and for two years in a row. The large crowds at the Ardingly Showgound were able to see what organisers called a “stunning “ set of decorated wood turned hollow forms at the large marquee showing off exhibits for the contest. Thomas, from Pulborough, a former Weald Sixth Form College student, picked up a £1,000 prize on Saturday after winning his wood class section and then being judged overall winner. After the presentation Thomas said: “I was completely overwhelmed and shocked when I received the call, I never expected to win for a second time and it was a very proud moment to receive the trophy again this year. “I have been wood turning since I was nine years old and it has evolved so much over during that time with the technology available
today allowing for experimentation with a huge variety of finishes and techniques. I hope to carry on wood turning until I am 90 years old.” To win Thomas has to beat some of the finest young workers from the region, in a contest that included metal, textiles, ceramics and design and technology. To persuade the judges Thomas and other competitors had to show they had mastered the concept, design, proper use of materials, artistic merit, function, propor-
tion technical skill and finish, with a final “wow” factor to win the top prizes. Thomas entered as an independent competitor, having left his college last year, and he now works as an apprentice at Ricardo Engineering in Shoreham. Other successes in the competition included Karris Stewart, of the Camelia Botnar Foundation near Cowfold who took third place in the metal section with a forge-made king-sized bed.

Elephantastic safari trails Road works celebrated with ribbon set to launch next month cutting as new bridges opened
Television entertainer Dave Benson Phillips will appear at the launch of Horsham’s Elephantastic safari trails next month. The opening is set for the town’s Carfax on July 26 and the trails will run until August 31. Elephant orders have closed after the distribution of more than 170 of the model creatures. More than 100 companies are participating and nearly 40 charities will benefit from the proceeds of the elephant sales at an autumn auction. Many of the model elephant owners have chosen to carry out in-house designs, while others have recruited a professional artist and some elephant models have even been celebrity endorsed. Comedian Vic Reeves is just one of the big names involved in the project. At the launch the elephants will be paraded and there will be live music with family entertainment. Horsham Rotary Club has organised the event with international wildlife charity Born Free, Billingshurst-based marketing agency PMW Communications, Horsham District Council and local traders’ organisation Horsham Unlimited. Horsham Rotarian John Le Rossignol said: ““The town centre trails are going to be fantastic and now the rural trails are really coming together too as more countryside companies are placing their orders, including Christ’s Hospital, Fisher’s Farm and Camping World to name but a few. “With merchandise including tshirts, soft toys and jelly bands on their way, we are going to be seeing Elephantastic going up across the town in more ways than one.” “Some of the most far-flung elephants have made their way across the Atlantic to Idaho for painting by Rotarian artist Michelle Bliss who returned to their American home state from Horsham in 2014; and the CoCo Foundation who recently took one of theirs on Safari in South Africa. “There really have been no boundaries with the project and we have plenty more up our sleeve for the coming months.”
People can get a glance at a selection of the decorated elephants on July 12 at Sparks in the Park annual family event in Horsham Park from noon until 5pm. International wildlife artist Pollyanna Pickering is the latest big name to design and decorate a creature for Elephantastic. Pollyanna, who is a long-standing patron of the Born Free Foundation, used her creative flair to design an elegant elephant.
Bridges at the A24 have been officially opened. Work done at Broadbridge Heath includes a new road bridge and a replacement footbridge. The event on Tuesday included an
official ribbon cutting ceremony on the new road bridge, where Cllr John O’Brien, cabinet member for highways and transportation for West Sussex County Council joined senior directors from Countryside, Berke-
ley Homes and J Breheny contractors to mark the occasion. Earlier guests saw a presentation by the three companies on the scheme and were given a tour of the project.

Josh takes his designing talents all the way to Paris A promising designer from Horsham is heading for a year at a top Paris fashion house. Josh Read, 21, who says he likes to “modernise the mundane” has been handpicked for a sought-after role at world-famous Dior. The Kingston University student was snapped up by the distinquished French fashion label after being named one of the winners of the coveted LVMH Graduate Prize for his collection of clothes for women. He will take up an internship at Dior's headquarters in August. A delighted Josh said: “I've always felt a particularly strong pull to fashion. I love the fact that people seem to wear their own personalities and I want to be part of shaping that. “The role at Dior will be an amazing opportunity to develop my knowledge alongside prominent industry figures. Their style is all about making a woman feel confident, which is something I've also concentrated on in my work.” Josh's

new womenswear range, developed in the studios at Kingston University during the final stages of his BA(Hons) Fashion studies, features vibrant blocks of bright oranges, blues and reds referencing both 1950s' glamour and cutting edge fashion houses. He said: ““I've developed my own signature style, which I'd describe as sophisticated, modern luxe,” he said. “I'm interested in the elegance of the 1950s and love the way women thought about fashion at that time. “They would dress up for different activities and I've tried to bring this concept into the modern day by creating bespoke outfits for everyday scenarios.” Modernising the mundane was another key focus of his collection. Josh said: “I take inspiration from the flashes of colour within the grey concrete urban environment. “I've woven in the colours used in the logos of major retail brands; splashes of red and blue amid the grey.”
Three junior golfers will welcome the first day of summer by playing from 5am to 10pm to help a cancer charity this weekend. Tom Griffiths, Scott Foice and Lewis Sparrow aim to play four rounds, 72 holes, at West Chiltington Golf Club on Sunday, the official start of the season of summer. They estimate they could walk about 15 miles and play about 300 shots, and earlier this week were already about half way to their sponsorship target of £300. Proceeds will be given to the Macmillan Cancer Support charity. The players can be sponsored on https://www.justgiving.com/fellowship-of-the-swing/ or by signing a form in the “proshop” at the club.

Police are warning motorcyclists about anti-social riding after a rider broke his neck in a crash offroad. It was the serious accident that police, worried about the antics of some riders, had feared might happen. The rider lost control of his motorbike and hit a tree in Faygate.
The rider was airlifted to St George’s Hospital, Tooting, with serious injuries The 36-year-old was riding with a pillion passenger on a public bridleway of Kilnwood Lane, Faygate. Neither wore crash helmets at the time of the impact. The rider was airlifted to St George's Hospital, Tooting, with serious injuries including a fractured neck. The passenger, aged 31, suffered cuts to his head and a leg and was taken to the East Surrey Hospital at Redhill after the crash on Wednesday of last week at 5.35pm. The names of those involved have not been released. Sgt Alan Spicer, of Sussex Police, said: “Local officers have been giving their best efforts to prevent this anti-social riding happening on public footpaths in the area. But their worst fears have been realised and a man is seriously ill in hospital. “It should serve as a warning of the real consequences and anyone considering riding recklessly on these bridleways will be dealt with robustly.”

Speech Day at Christ’s Hospital school Man jailed for indecent images of young children A man arrested at his home in Horsham in a paedophile squad raid has been jailed for making indecent images of children. Simon Quinn, unemployed, 43, was caught after an investigation by a specialist team of detectives. Quinn was arrested by officers from the team in August 2013 at his home address in Hawthorn Close, Horsham. He appeared at Hove Crown Court on Thursday of last week for sentencing, having pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to 10 charges of making a total of 1100 indecent images of children. He also admitted one charge of possessing three extreme pornographic images. He was sentenced to a total of six months imprisonment and ordered to forfeit the images and the CS spray. The prosecution, authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service, followed an investigation by the Paedophile On-Line Investigation Team (POLIT) of Sussex Police. Police said all of the images were obtained from the Internet and there was no evidence of any offences involving the contacting of children. Detective Constable Chris Smith said: “Although there was no evidence of any contact offending, each image in these cases repre-
sents a criminal offence of child abuse and we will continue our efforts to identify and bring to justice such offenders." Sussex Police said that Quinn, whose address at the time of sentencing was The Street, Rustington, was a police constable in Surrey Police but had resigned four years ago.
Traditions went ahead smoothly during Speech Day at CH, in the presence of The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor Locum Tenens and the Sheriffs of the City of London. Speech Day is a very special celebration for the Year 13 (Grecians) pupils and their families, when prizes are awarded and a thanks-giving service takes place in the School Chapel. John Franklin, Head Master said: “After a week of unsettled weather, we were very lucky as the sun shone for our Speech Day this year. The CH Band was outstanding and the march past went very well indeed. The pupils took an obvious pride in marching for their house and for the School. At the Prize Giving ceremony that followed, the highlight was the oration given by the Senior Grecian, James Winsbury, and Lord Mayor Locum Tenens, Alderman Sir David Wootton’s response to James’ speech.” Following the speeches, academic prizes were given to pupils for excellence in particular subjects. Awards and trophies, given by Livery Companies and other generous supporters, were presented for special achievements and breadth of education. Year 7 pupils, Molly Sakutukwa and Peter Crowther (pictured), presented flowers to guests, Sheriff Adler and Mrs Parmley, respectively. Pupil Rosemarie Lane and her mother (pictured) captured the moment with a selfie! Rosemarie is off to study Veterinary Science, following in the footsteps of her older sister who was also educated at Christ’s Hospital.

Waterloo: 100 days
Horsham museum www.horshammuseum.org
This event runs from 19th Mar 2015 to 11th Jul 2015 The French defeat at Waterloo, on the evening of Sunday 18 June 1815, drew to a close 23 years of war that began with the French Revolutionary Wars and continued with the Napoleonic. The wars redefined Europe, and Britain did not escape untouched by the experience. The new exhibition 'Waterloo: 100 Days,' explores the background to this most famous battle and the thrilling events that led to the final defeat and exile of Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo marked the end of the Emperor's final bid for power, the so-called '100 Days', and was the final chapter in his remarkable career. This exhibition explores the background
to the battle, beginning with the French Revolution of 1789, and describes some of the key events and personalities that led up to that day in June 1815. It also features many local stories, from life in Horsham
Although the wars themselves took place overseas, local militias and barracks of soldiers were common sights at the time, when a popular ditty ran:"Ridgick for riches, Green for poors, Billingshurst for pretty girls, and Horsham for whores." Although the wars themselves took place overseas, local militias and barracks of soldiers were common sights across southern England, and for a time in the early
1800s Horsham too was a Barrack town – the soldiers' encampment was where the Cricket field is today. The revolutionary fervour unleashed across the Channel by turns gripped and horrified the British, and as the 1790s wore on, the government became steadily more suspicious of internal dissent. In the 1800s and 1810s, though, the figure of Napoleon was admired by some, and the struggle against tyranny and arbitrary government became a rallying cry to figures like the Warnhamborn poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Horsham Museum is fortunate to have many original documents from the period including the plan of the barracks drawn in 1815 when the barracks were sold and dismantled. The exhibition will feature documents which illustrate how the town was dramatically affected by the soldiers, with accounts of corruption, court martials, trials for robbery, attempted murder, rape and causing affray. Using the Museum's collections the flavour of the period will be given, through costume, books, prints, china and glassware.

Trying to beat the burglars Young politicians start on road to Parliament
Police are working with volunteers and residents to try to block burglars in Sussex. Officers across the county stepped up their activities to encourage crime prevention, track down wanted offenders and cut the number of breakins in Sussex during the warmer months. As part of National Volunteers' Week, police cadets, specials and neighbourhood watch co-ordinators across the county supported the awareness campaign by distributing a simple checklist showing how residents can cut the chances of them becoming a burglary victim. The checklist helps people iden-
tify areas where they could make improvements to their home, such as changing the types of lock on doors and windows and ensuring those at ground level are shut when those rooms are not occupied. People will also be encouraged to register their valuables free at www. immobilise.com so that if they are stolen officers can more easily reunite them with their owners. A number of burglary victims have also agreed to share their stories in the hope that this could prevent other people from being preyed on by thieves. These will able to be viewed on the Sussex Police website by visiting www.sussex.police.uk and click-
ing on the Operation Magpie logo. Police launched Operation Magpie to tackle burglary across the county. Recent successes for the Magpie team include the charging of a 28-year-old man with robbery and conspiracy to burgle eight homes in West Chiltington, Midhurst, Lavant, Rudgwick, Loxwood and Chichester, between 9 January and 14 January. The offences were part of Operation Smart, a linked series of more than 200 burglaries across the south east. If you have any information about burglaries or shops selling stolen goods, call 101 or email 101@sussex. pnn.police.uk. For crime prevention advice visit www.sussex.police.uk.
Youngsters who could be tomorrow’s top politicians honed their fledgling skills at a training weekend. Newly-elected members of the West Sussex Youth Cabinet and UK Youth Parliament came together for the first time at Lodge Hill Activity Centre, near Pulborough. 40 of the 44 West Sussex Youth Cabinet Members, Members of Youth Parliament and Deputy Members of Youth Parliament took part in workshops focusing on social media, representation, public speaking and communications skills. The Youth Cabinet is an elected group aged 11-19 who represent their peers and give a voice on issues affecting their lives by talking with decision and policy makers to ensure young peoples’ views are listened to and acted upon. The UK Youth Parliament is a national elected group that provides opportunities for people aged 11-18
to use their voice in creative ways to bring about social change on a national level. Sebastian Maxted, 14, deputy member of UK Youth Parliament for East Arun, Adur and Worthing, said: “The weekend was a great opportunity to meet a broad range of people, each differing in their views, to come together. “I really learnt how different people think and work in a team and I think the most important thing I have come away with is how we can all contribute effectively together as a group. “ With more than 23,000 votes, the 2015 West Sussex Youth Cabinet and UK Youth Parliament elections proved to be most successful to date. In further Awards News – Woods are proud to have been recognised as Coach Tour Operator of the Year (Medium Fleet), at the National Coach Tourism Awards last month. In explanation of Woods Travel’s worthy win, the judges stated that Woods are clearly committed to improving what they do. On certain departures they give clients a choice of a three or four star hotel on the same holiday. To avoid cancelling a holiday, and disappointing clients, Woods share selected tours with other operators of comparable standards. There is first night feedback from the driver or courier to help nip any problems in the bud and staff regularly travel on tours for first-hand experience. The judges commented that Woods Travel deserves recognition for the way in which they focus on each element of what they do, looking to continually improve through training and product development.

There is bounty in every garden Thank you Horsham Society and John Nicholas... Cllr Jim Rae West Sussex County Council - Independent Member, Roffey division
Guy Deakins Gardening
Something that often surprises me when I meet people to discuss their garden is their insistence that they cannot grow anything. Of course this is never true, but it seems to me that there is a psychological barrier in place. Now that Chelsea has passed and Hampton Court is rapidly approaching it appears that the 'shows' leave many with a distinct conflict of confidence. On the one hand they want to grow plants and flowers - inspired to beautify their surroundings - on the other, they look at the success of those professionals and wither under the self-imposed scrutiny. Perhaps we should be less harsh on ourselves? After-all is said; a professional is but somebody with the experience of learning from others mistakes.
The point about psychology is of great importance. Having just started a course on cognitive neuroscience and emotion at the Universitat de Barcelona (my first dalliance into the subject was at Duke University last year), you may be surprised to note that humans and plants are more than just planetary companions. Believe it or not, it is now thought that our evolution is linked directly not only to growing plants for our food, but to giving and receiving plants. Without going into the complications of neural pathways and chemical transmitters, it has been recorded that there is an increased release of certain naturally produced 'reward chemicals' when flowers are given. This effect is not only seen in women either (so an untraditional but welcome present for father's day perhaps?) It is thought that this stems (no pun intended) from our very earliest genetic memories when we foraged
for our food and evidence of a good future harvest was key to our survival. Thus to give and receive flowers is hard-wired into our consciousness. Simply put, we do it because our genetic makeup requires us to. It is also noted that these same chemicals are also released just at the sight of a flower in a garden,. Basically, what is in honest simplicity the sexual organs of a plant, is of the utmost interest to us as well as the bees and butterflies. If you are embarrassed by this statement, my apologies, but science is so fascinating don't you think? Now, when you go to one of the shows, or visit one of the many open gardens this summer, just think you are helping your own mental wellbeing. By appreciating these gardens, you are releasing the feelings of happiness and fulfilment into your system. Your excuse? You are simply doing what mankind has done for nigh on 2 million years, so why change the habit of many lifetimes?
After having been vilified, crucified and driven out of the Conservative Party and Horsham District Council for telling the simple truth about the proposed North of Horsham development for the last 2 and a half years, it would now appear that some are now cottoning on to that simple truth – unluckily for me, at least 6 months too late! I have always said that the damage was done pre-2011 elections, I have always said that with a 5 years housing land supply shortfall and the advent of the NPPF we in North Horsham had no chance to say no to Liberty Trust’s ambitions; I have always said that what we had to do was to make the best of a bad deal and extract every single penny of community benefit we could from the developer. I now must thank both the Horsham Society and Mr John Nicholas of Langhurstwood Rd, Horsham for agreeing with me – and John, a battle was
never lost because there was never a battle that could have been won…. I have always said even if we did not have a valid Horsham District Planning Framework that would not have stopped an application from Liberty Trust. In fact without one that application would in all likelihood have been for far more houses than the 2,500 in the framework, it is a pity that the few noisy and belligerent voices have not understood that simple fact – and sadly I have to tell them that a petition will not make the slightest difference either ….this government is not listening and never has!!! As the Horsham Society and John Nicholas recognise we now all have to come together and get the best out of this we can, I have paid a terrible price for my blunt simple honesty; for the next two years as a County Councillor I will do what I can to assist capturing those benefits that we in North Horsham desperately need – the question being will others now stop bemoaning our fate and do their bit?
Firm helps young cyclists stay safe on the roads Young cyclists have a better chance of being seen after a firm’s Bike Week gift. Horsham company Rudridge, specialist material suppliers to the civil construction industry, gave high visibility tops and reflector ankle bands to year six pupils at Holbrook Primary School, Horsham, who have been undertaking their BikeAbility tests. Darren Price, Rudridge business development manager, said: “We’re delighted to support these pupils with specialist safety wear and reflector ankle bands. Cycling is a great activity especially when it’s a part of everyday life, but it’s crucial to be seen and safe. The hi-vis jackets and
reflector ankle bands will ensure that these pupils are very visible to other road users”. Ian Holmes, head teacher at Holbrook Primary School, added: “We are very grateful to Rudridge for supplying our pupils with these essential safety items. “BikeAbility teaches the youngsters skills and confidence for today’s roads and visibility is an important part of that. “Whether pupils are cycling to school every day, just occasionally, or using their bikes to visit friends, they are going to be seen, thanks to these hi-vis tops and reflector ankle bands”.
Anti-Gatwick expansion activists ready to fight on Protestors fighting Gatwick expansion insist they will fight on if a decision goes against them. Communities Against Gatwick Noise and Emissions is awaiting the final recommendation from the Airports Commission on the location of a new runway at either Gatwick or Heathrow. Unveiling the latest campaign slogan, ‘Noisier. Dirtier. Unforgiving. Devastating’, chair of the group Sally Pavey said: “A second runway would be catastrophic for the local area. “Noisier for tens of thousands more residents from the air and roads. Dirtier due to increasing levels of pollution from concentrated flight paths and congested roads. Unforgiving on our local services and infrastructure – pushed well beyond their capability. And devastating for the local
environment and local taxpayers in having to pick up the bill for Gatwick’s expansion.”
Communities agaisnt Gatwick Noise and Emissions is awaiting the final recommendation from the Airports Commission The protest group says its new slogan comes as a direct response to Gatwick’s advertising campaign.

Down through the rabbit hole Horsham business, Make, Do & Trend, celebrate 150 years of Alice in Wonderland with upcycled vintage china decorating workshop Horsham based craft workshop company, Make, Do & Trend, are organising a creative class and tea party, to celebrate 150 years of Alice in Wonderland, next month. The workshop's creator, and Business Matters Award’s finalist for Innovation and Young Achiever, Kirsty, explains “I have always loved the story of Alice in Wonderland, since I was a child and it’s so nice to be able to incorporate what I do now and remember my childhood at the same time.” Class participants will receive tuition and materials required to upcycle a selection of vintage china, which they can decorate, using an array of patterns and typography. Kirsty speaks of the event “I wanted to run a class that not only incorporates something that is ontrend, but also plays homage to the storybook itself. The Mad Hatter tea party is such an integral part of the book that I knew it had to be something involving vintage Upcycling is a trend that continues to become increasingly popular and the workshop provides the perfect platform for participants to start out their own homemade upcycling projects. All of the china used for the class, will have been passed down or purchased from charity shops and car boot sales, and Kirsty can advise on the best places to source upcy-

Last Saturday an estimated 4000 spectators at Ewhurst’s Hurtwood Park Polo Club were treated to a unique local event in especially beautiful surroundings. The excitement and spectacle of high quality polo, a dazzling array of jaw dropping high performance supercars, all topped off by a concert showcasing leading exponents of popular music made for a time to remember. The day was a major fundraising event for Prostate Cancer UK with many of their cheerful volunteers hosting the event. Every year 40,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and the charity sponsors research, information and advice to help more men survive and enjoy a better life. The fields at the club were full of picnicking families, while others dined from outlets in the marquees. Over 100 red Ferraris wowed the crowds and there were even more Porches, Lamborginis, the occasional Maserati and superb vintage cars, including Lagondas, E Type Jaguars, Austin Healeys and a pair of bang up to date Tesla electric cars. There was also a display of iconic vintage motorbikes – Moto Guzzis and Ducatis, for sale at upwards of £8000 each, although for some a helicopter was the preferred mode of transport to the event. With the big wheel and other fairground attractions in full swing, polo enthusiasts were entertained by top professionals – the Welsh national team taking on international counterparts comprising regular visitors from Argentina and Uruguay. There was a poignant reason for the location and the choice of charity. Hurtwood is owned by Kenney Jones,

drummer of The Small Faces, Faces and The Who. At last year’s event Kenney’s friend, locally based Alvin Stardust, gave a stellar performance, describing his participation as: “One of the best days of my life,” but within a few months sadly lost his battle against advanced prostate cancer. Then Kenney himself was diagnosed with the disease. The concert was opened by Julie Stardust with a heartfelt tribute to her husband – “my hero” - and a plea to men, especially older men, to get themselves checked – in the UK one in eight men will get prostate cancer at some point. Then Julie launched into some vibrant, semi-operatic renditions of songs she has performed at the National Theatre, West End, Wembley and far beyond. Next came Cross Section of Quadrophenia fame: “We haven’t played together for 37 years, but we’ve kicked the rust off it and here it is!” Nik Kershaw – “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”, Grammy winner John Parr and Ali Campbell of UB40 followed. Chris Difford of The Squeeze featured his pithy lyrics with “Up the Junction”, Andy Fairweather Low – soon to appear at Horsham’s Capitol – whizzed on before Steve Harley of Cockney Rebel donated his guitar “for a minimum of £2000” – it raised £7000 for the charity. This was a great fun day for a serious cause - the busy musicians travelling long distances and providing their services free for the sheer joy of playing together to raise funds for the pernicious disease - prostate cancer is the most common cause of cancer in men in the UK. PETs POST

Sponsored by
Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about what to do if your pet goes missing. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.
Pet care for your holidays abbi moon
RSPCA
You may have chosen a dog-friendly holiday but if you are not taking your pet with you when you go away, there are a number of options to ensure your pet is cared for when you are away; you can leave them with friends or family, have a pet-sitter, or take them to a boarding establishment. Many pets can find the absence of their owner and a change of routine stressful. Asking responsible friends or family to look after them can often be the least stressful option but make sure that you leave clear instructions on how to look after your pet. If your cat or dog is staying with friends, make sure they have an identification disc with their temporary address. If you do not have family or friends who can look after your pet, another option is to arrange for a pet-sitter.
It is important that you leave your pet in the care of a responsible and reputable person that will meet your pet’s needs as well as respect your property. The National Association of Registered Petsitters can provide you with a list of their members. When choosing a pet-sitter make sure that you meet them before employing them and check their references. You need to be confident that they will care for your pet’s needs properly and that your pet gets on well with them. When choosing a kennel, cattery, or small animal boarder it is important that you take the time to find one that will suit your pet. All kennels and catteries should have an up-todate licence from Horsham District Council. Before deciding on using a boarder you should always visit them. It is important that the facilities are suitable for your pet so ask; Will they exercise your pet, and provide s/he with the appropriate social contact? Do they make daily checks to make sure the animals are eating and toileting properly? Do they ask about
your pet’s diet and health, and if your pet has any special needs, or medical requirements? Boarding establishments should not keep predator and prey species in close proximity, for example rabbits near dogs. It is important that there are enough people to look after the needs of the animals in their care so ask how many staff they have per animal. International Cat Care have a list of approved boarding catteries on their website, www.icatcare.org.uk and search Listed catteries. Whoever you chose to care for your pets while you are away, make sure that they are a responsible person and that they understand your pet’s needs and any special requirements that s/he may have. Give them clear instructions on how to care for your pet and leave the name and number of your vet and, if possible, a number where you can be contacted in case of emergencies. More information can be found at www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/ pets/general/holiday.

Diabetes in cats: What you should look out for!
Diabetes mellitus, also known as “sugar” diabetes is a complex disease that is common in cats; a recent survey suggests that nearly 1:200 cats are diabetic. Diabetes in cats, like diabetes in dogs and people, arises because there is either not enough insulin produced or alternatively the body doesn’t respond to the insulin as it should. Insulin, which is released from the pancreas, plays a vital role in the body. It controls the flow of glucose (sugar) from the bloodstream into the cells of the body. When insulin is deficient or ineffective, the cat has to break down fat and protein instead for energy. This then causes a cascade of events which lead to the disease. Whilst diabetes can affect any cat, it most often occurs in older, overweight to obese cats. Male cats are more prone to the condition as are Burmese cats. It is not clear what the exact cause of diabetes is, but the above are all known risk factors. Ensuring one’s pet cat is of normal bodyweight, for example, significantly reduces their risk of developing the condition. So what to look for? There are four ‘classic signs’ that characteristically develop in the disease. Diabetics tend to lose weight (sometimes dramatically) despite having a good to ravenous appetite. Diabetics also tend to be extremely thirsty and they drink to excess. Of course, this ultimately causes them to urinate excessively as well. Other signs to watch out for include lethargy, a poor scurfy hair coat
and an unwillingness to jump. However, not all diabetic cats show all of these signs, so if you are worried that your cat may have the condition, please contact your vet. A simple urine or blood test is usually all that is required to confirm whether your pet has the condition. If your cat does, the disease can often be treated successfully with a combination of diet, exercise and insulin. Like all diseases, catching diabetes early significantly improves the outcome. In the case of diabetic cats, early treatment has the added benefit that it is sometimes possible to reverse the disease so that the cat is no longer diabetic. In some cats control of the diabetes can be very difficult and the disease may be as a result of feline acromegaly. This is an hormone disease caused by chronic, excess secretion of growth hormone from the pituitary gland. It is a slowly progressive disease that affects many organ systems and nearly always results in diabetes mellitus that is difficult to control with standard insulin therapy regimes. Feline acromegaly tends to occur in middle aged to geriatric patients, with the average age of onset being 10 to11 years old. The condition also tends to be more common in the males than females. Additional tests would be required to confirm feline acromegaly. If you would like further information on diabetes or would like your pet checked for the condition, please contact your veterinary practice.

Little Marley’s lucky leg
THE UK'S NO.1 BEST REVIEWED VET PRACTICE *
3000 owners trust us to provide personal and complete, continuous care for their pets Marley was brought in to Arun Veterinary Group with a fractured hock and a complicated dislocation; unfortunately the owners could not afford the complex surgery and turned to a local animal charity for help. The outlook for Marley’s leg was poor as the charity could only afford a full leg amputation. Arun Veterinary Group were approached to perform the amputation and upon further examination, Matthew Gittings – Owner of Arun Veterinary Group, offered to try the extensive orthopaedic procedure to save his leg. He had the complex surgery performed at the new Ashington branch practice, using wires and an external fixator to keep the hock in place. He came round well from surgery and
was kindly fostered by one of the nurses. He had to endure 6 weeks cage rest in order for it heal, before having the external fixator removed, much to Marley’s relief it was finally off, but it wasn’t over yet, he still had the internal wires holding the fracture together, which was now making its way out of his leg, after another small procedure he had the wire removed and has commenced some physiotherapy to gain strength back in his leg, and we are happy to say he is enjoying his new home on 4 legs. Don’t miss our £10 ‘Check a Lump’ consultation with a vet (Normal price £31.55) Further discounts may apply. Offer is exclusive to lumps and bumps only, other examinations will be exempt from this offer, terms and conditions apply.

On the first floor, there are six large bedrooms, four bath/ shower rooms including a master suite, which features a dressing area and en-suite shower room. The gardens and grounds are beautifully secluded with a mixture of herbaceous borders, mature trees and informal lawn areas. There are a number of lovely terraced areas and an outdoor swimming pool, partly heated by solar energy. There is an abundance of oak, silver birch and other specimen trees, such as willow and maple. The property is well screened on one side with yew hedging and a path on the west side of the gardens leads to the driveway. Adjacent to the swimming pool is a substantial outbuilding with parking for several cars, which has planning permission to convert into a two bedroom annexe with garaging. This garage has four bays and measures 45’ by 20’ (Planning Reference Number D/11/2165008). The property is being offered for sale with a Guide Price of £1,375,000 for the freehold interest and a viewing is highly recommended. Becoming a ‘grandlord’: Top 5 benefits of investing a pension in property
Now that retirees can access their pension funds as cash, many are looking at buy-to-let as a way to get the most from their pension savings. Good returns, a long history of strong performance and tangibility make property an attractive investment, particularly compared with the volatility of the stock market and low interest rates on savings. Allison Thompson, lettings director at property specialist Leaders, says: “Demand for rented accommodation has been strong for many years, and is still increasing, with more people renting than ever before. In many areas, there is not enough rental property to satisfy demand; rents are rising, tenancies are getting longer and good quality properties do not stay empty for long. “All this paints a very stable picture for
landlords and is appealing to older investors, who can now use their pension savings to become ‘grandlords’. Like any investment, buy-to-let comes with no guarantees, but, done with proper care and planning, the benefits are compelling.” For those considering buying to let, Ms Thompson highlights the top 5 benefits of investing a pension in property: 1) Good returns on income and growth Buy-to-let can deliver great returns over the medium to long-term, giving investors the opportunity to earn a regular monthly income, whilst also achieving capital growth. Longer-term house price growth is around six per cent per year, according to most reliable measures, and in most good buy-to-let areas, rental yields of five per cent or more are achievable. With the performance of traditional
pension funds often strongly linked to that of stock markets, by investing your pension in property, you can avoid volatile equity markets and benefit from a more stable source of income and growth. 2) Benefits not offered by annuities Annuity rates are at historic lows (around four per cent), making this traditional option for retirees, increasingly unattractive. Furthermore, if you buy an annuity, you give up any further growth from your pension, whereas investing in property, gives you both a rental income and the opportunity to grow your capital. Unlike an annuity, an investment in property is not limited to an individual’s lifetime and can be passed on to the next generation, and generations to come. 3) Save on fees to maximise your pension pot Many pension funds charge significant fees for managing your investments, even when they perform badly, which further reduces the value of your pension pot. If you used an independent financial advisor to set up your pension, you may also have to pay commission to them on an ongoing basis. Investing your pension in property, gives you control of it, enabling you to potentially make more of your pension pot and at the same time avoid those eroding pension management fees. 4) Borrow to boost your investment potential Investing in property means you could take out a mortgage (to be paid off by your rental income) while you enjoy the potential capital growth. Most buy-to-let mortgages are done on an interest-only basis, so the amount borrowed will not be paid off over time. This is tax efficient, as you can offset mortgage interest payments against your income tax bill.
If you secure the right buy-to-let property and mortgage deal, your rental return could still be substantially higher than your mortgage payments, giving you the option to save the extra cash to supplement your life, invest in another buy-to-let, or use it to pay off the mortgage at the end of its term. During the time that you own the property, you will benefit from the capital growth across the full value of the property, often giving you a higher capital return than on a cash only purchase. Whilst mortgages for older owner-occupiers can be harder to obtain, many buyto-let lenders are prepared to lend to older landlords, in some cases up to the age of 80 or 85. 5) Take control over your investment and limit the risks No investment is risk-free, but with buy-to-let, there are a number of practical steps you can take to limit the risks: Consulting a letting expert to guide you on where and what to buy for maximum return, is the best first step for a solid investment. A good letting agent will also find you a reliable tenant, ensure you stay on the right side of the law, take care of your property and protect your interests at all times . You also have the option to take out specialist landlord insurance, to cover you in case of rent arrears, damage to your property or legal fees. This comes at a cost, but can save you money, if anything goes wrong, and gives invaluable peace of mind, so you can enjoy your retirement to the full. Horsham FC manager Dom di Paola has targeted a top three finish for the Hornets next season after finishing bottom and dropping out of the Ryman League last season. He has however revealed that although there are a few players he would like to keep at the club he very much doubts if any of the players from last season will remain due to travel problems for those living a long distance away and others not wishing to drop down a level. The Hornets will now play in the Sussex County League that has been renamed as the Southern Combination Football League from next season. Di Paola also revealed that he has already secured the signatures of a number of players with County League experience but will keep them under wraps until the transfer window opens on July 1. The Hornets manager has also said he will be looking to bring through the club’s youngsters such as Matthew Maynard and Jake Chadwick whom he gave first team debuts to at the end of last season. Di Paola has a lot of experience at this level having given East Preston their most successful period in their
Horsham will almost certainly be without the influential Tony Nwachukwu next season history so he will know exactly the kind of player required to compete in this division. He also recognises that the Hornets will not have an easy ride and will have to be at their best each week as he expects a few
surprise packages. He will also have six difficult local derbies to negotiate in matches home and away against Horsham YMCA, Broadbridge Heath and Loxwood.

Pulborough picked up value league points Bowls Jane Gray – Pulborough BC Pulborough faced Bognor for the second time this season and Bognor were keen to avenge their previous defeat and made it tough for Pulborough throughout, with close scores on all rinks. Rink wins for Pulborough came from Skips Len Adsett and Ivan Salmon, both managing a 3 point victory and gaining another 4 league points for Pulborough in the battle for West Sussex Bowls League honours. The final score was 71/76 to Bognor.
Next up Pulborough hosted West Tarring for a friendly. A mixed bag of results yielded a fantastic top rink for skip John Brown, with number 1 Melvin Green and number 2 Kath Ayling. The scores were tight until the home team killed their competition with a 7 on end 8 and winning ends from then on, to finish 28/8. The final score for the day was a hard fought 62/82 to West Tarring. Pulborough had their second of three away games of the week against top of the league Tarring Priory in the WSBL. A local derby against rivals Storrington in the Brookes Motors League, delivered a comprehensive away win, with wins for all 4 triples and some consistent scoring from the Pulborough teams. Top rink for Pulborough came from skip Jeff Davy, number 1 Kath Ayling and number 2 Arthur Varndell, after the best possible start of scoring 5's on the first 2 ends to quash any hope for their opponents. Anna Wilson won the Albatross Diving Competition
Farlington School’s Anna Wilson competed at the Albatross Diving Interclub Competition in Reading last weekend. Ten diving clubs from across the South East brought their skills divers and Anna competed against sixteen other girls aged 12-13 years old. Anna dived very well winning her age group by a clear nine points. The win is a great boost for Anna who next week takes part in the
South East qualifiers for the National Skills Competition in Manchester in July. Also last weekend, Farlington’s Gemma Cumber swam in an open water race in the River Arun in Littlehampton; the race was over the Iron Man distance of 3.8km. Gemma, who is aged 14, was the youngest swimmer in the event of over 400 competitors. Gemma won the youth section in a time of 43.2 minutes, came 5th overall in the ladies section and 15th overall for the entire race, including the men.

Rohit Jagota's century was too good for Horsham

Sunday June 14 – Gray-Nicholls T20 Cup Horsham 170-4 (20 0vers) Roffey 172-2 (16.1 overs) Roffey won by 8 wickets Thanks to a superlative batting display by Rohit Jagota, Roffey won this T20 cup encounter at a canter with almost four overs to spare. After being inserted Horsham threatened to score 200 plus but were reigned back in the latter stages of their innings. Several players chipped in with promising scores but acting captain James Johnson was again the pick of the batsmen, his 81 containing 8 fours and a six. At the half way stage honours were fairly even, Roffey skipper Josh Fleming saying: “170 is a good score, we bowled too many wide balls, gifting Horsham too many runs and we should have kept them to something like 150.” However, such was the brilliance of Rohit’s batting – his elegant footwork and dismissive stroke play smiting 9 fours and the same number of sixes in his 112 - that Roffey bruised home in double quick time, finishing in the grand manner, fre-
quent bowling changes unable to stem the tide. The major difference was Roffey’s all-round strength in depth; Horsham’s playing resources being cruelly exposed. Post match Josh Fleming said: “It was a flat deck and we found it difficult to contain Horsham, but how do you bowl against Rohit when he bats like that?”
Several players chipped in with promising scores but acting captain James Johnson was again the pick of the batsmen James Johnson agreed, saying: “That was a pretty special innings from Rohit - our attacking batsmen didn’t come off today.” While Rohit commented: “A great win for us! It was a good wicket and our partnerships enabled me to just play my natural game and I really enjoyed getting a hundred.” Roffey will visit Burgess Hill in the quarter final on July 5. George Fleming's 3 wickets helped Roffey retain second place
Roffey won comfortably, staying second, breathing down the neck of league leaders Preston Nomads. Bexhill won the toss and took early Roffey wickets but productive middle and late partnerships carried the score to 214, runs aplenty as it transpired. Sussex’s Ashar Zaidi bowled 20 overs, taking 4-55, but from 84-5, 37 from Rohit Jagota, another useful contribution from Ben Manenti and, most especially, a typically
spades - wickets falling relentlessly as Leigh Harrison, George Fleming and Alex Collins grabbed three scalps apiece, Bexhill collapsing to 84-9, only a 45 run last wicket partnership saving them from total ignominy. Roffey skipper Josh Fleming said: “The wicket had a bit in it for the bowlers, so once we passed 200 I thought we’d be OK and then when Zaidi was on four he hit a half volley straight to square leg, making us pretty confident.” Tomorrow (Saturday June 20) Roffey visit Horsham, looking to avenge last season’s two league defeats at the hands of their near neighbours. forthright 61 not out from wicketkeeper Matt Davies – with 7 fours and 2 sixes – converted Roffey from potential defeat first to respectability then to a highly defendable total. A 47 run last wicket stand featuring a handy 29 from Leigh Harrison batting at number eleven was the icing on the cake, but Leigh quipped: “I hope I don’t have to bat again for a few weeks!” Matt added: “He’s in his prime!” then continued: “Their opening bowlers were useful and Zaidi was steady, but our strength in depth enabled us to post a challenging total.” In the previous game Bexhill were shot out for 90 by Preston Nomads and in the first match of the season they capitulated for a paltry 58 against Brighton & Hove. Their batting fragility surfaced again – in

After three wins from their previous four games Billingshurst came badly unstuck against lowly Middleton, who notched up their first victory from six starts. Billingshurst have bowled consistently well, dismissing the opposition very cheaply on three occasions but have yet to pass 200 with the bat. Without the reliable, experienced Scott Stratton they were again indebted to Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi with 42 - and to 45 from Rob Woodman, both hitting 7 fours - but just 41 runs came from the other nine batsmen. At 51-1 a challenging score looked likely, until a cluster of wickets reduced Hurst to 107-7, from which meaningful recovery proved impossible. Impressive bowling and fielding displays have enabled Hurst to defend low totals, but not this time. Dhanushka, opening the bowling, took the four Middleton wickets that

fell – for 51 – but, after his century at Horsham last week, Captain Sean Heather was again on form with an unbeaten fifty, overseas player Jofra Archer passing the same milestone, to add to his 6-69 as Middleton cruised home with 41 overs unused. Billingshurst Club Chairman Jim Burroughs told the District Post: “We were missing four first teamers and didn’t look quite the same side, which made life difficult for us as our batting has been
letting us down. Their overseas has been a reluctant bowler but he impressed with wickets and runs and their skipper batted well, too. We’re likely to be depleted again tomorrow (Saturday June 20) when Preston Nomads visit Jubilee Fields.” Nomads top the table but Hurst have been a different proposition at home, winning both of their matches.
