Inspiring show launches Year of Culture inviting all to get involved Some 250 guests from the communities of culture, heritage, local charities, business and education gathered at Horsham’s Capitol Theatre, on 27 September, for an evening of live entertainment and film, to launch the start of the Horsham District Year of Culture.

The Year of Culture will feature a key event for each month of 2019, taking place somewhere across the district to celebrate the many facets of culture that make Horsham district unique. As well as the monthly key event, there will be an extensive programme of Year of Culture fringe events, which will be promoted and celebrated.

The official launch event featured a specially commissioned film celebrating what the Horsham district has to offer culturally.

The film, which received a great response, posed the question ‘What is culture?’ to numerous members of the public and the results were the foundation of the footage, which can be viewed on the Year of Culture website: www. hdculture2019.co.uk.

Live entertainment included performances from a host of local talent: celebrated violinist

Andrew Bernardi, fire dancer Lady Alex “Bound”, vocalist Julie Stardust, a dance routine featuring digital visuals by award winning games studio Creative Assembly, a reading of Hilaire Belloc’s “The South Country” by James Dinsmore and a sketch starring James Bolam and Susan Jameson.

The evening ended with an address by local children’s laureate Julia Donaldson MBE who is the Patron of the Year of Culture.

As the project’s sponsor, Horsham District Council is coordinating the Year of Culture, working closely with advisors representing arts and heritage throughout the community.

Cllr Jonathan Chowen, Deputy Leader of Horsham District Council and Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, commented: “I am both thrilled and delighted at the response we have had to our launch evening, which was a true showcase of some of the best our district has to offer in terms of cultural diversity.

A fun side effect is you will learn more about other cultures and have an excuse to travel to new countries. There are a number of adult education opportunities offered by the West Sussex County Council that you can explore.

Exercise Regularly: The benefits of regular exercise cannot be overstated. It is also one of the most important ways to avoid the onset of dementia. In fact, you can reduce your risk by half if you take no other steps but exercise. Plus, exercise can slow down further deterioration in people who already have cognitive issues. The brain is stimulated by exercise by making new neural connections and maintaining old ones.

Stay Social: Humans are social animals. We need other humans with whom

we can share difficulties, happy times, and ideas. Developing and maintaining new friendships becomes even more important as we age. The more involved people over 50 are in social activities, the more they can protect themselves from dementia. Fortunately, there are several hubs and clubs for seniors in Horsham District.

Eat Healthy: If exercise is the most important deterrent for dementia, eating healthy is definitely second. This includes lowering your cholesterol and watching your weight. Also, avoid food with artificial chemicals and sweeteners as well as high fat, over-processed foods.

Engage in Destressing Activities: Persistent and chronic stress takes a heavy toll on the brain.

When you have de-stressing tools in your repertoire, you can fight dementia.

Relaxing activities might include yoga, going for a walk, playing with your pet, or even just regularly spending time with people who share your sense of humour.

In Ashington age is no More ‘Wows’ from this years Steyning Food & Drink Festival barrier to having fun A group of adventurous older residents from Ashington recently attended an activity day at Lodge Hill Outdoor Activity Centre near Pulborough, where they tried rifle shooting, all-terrain vehicle driving and abseiling.

Arranged by Jan Wise from Age UK Horsham District and Horsham District Council Neighbourhood Warden Jayne Jeffrey, the day had been a while in the planning. West Sussex County Council’s Small Grants Fund, which promotes the 5 Ways to Wellbeing, financed the day.

Organisers noted: “Gennaro was a delight, full of enthusiasm and humour – in fact he well overrun the time allotted to answer numerous questions from the assembled company. To round off the week, Cobblestone Walk held a special Family Fun Day on 30 September, with face painting, treasure hunt, animals to meet, special offers and a raffle.

The owls proved especially popular.

To the amazement and delight of all, the nocturnal birds stayed awake for the entire day.

The Festival comes to end on Sunday (8 October). The residents thoroughly enjoyed the day, one 93 year old enthused: “At least I had a go, I tried, and it was good fun!”.

Due to the day being a success, another trip to the centre will be arranged next Summer, with an overnight stay, involving more activities including zip-wire and a barbecue around a camp fire.

Jan Wise added: “We need to give a very big thank you to the Lodge Hill staff who made this trip possible. At all times the group’s needs were accommodated and everyone had fun.”

New this year, at the Steyning & District Food and Drink Festival, the Great Steyning Bake Off took place on 16 September, showcasing outstanding entries from local home bakers.

With such high quality entries, competion was fierce. Local judges, Les Nicholson from the Artisan Bakehouse, Laure Moyle from Pudding Fairy and Eddie Woodward from Cobblestone Walk, had the onerous task of naming the winners, which included Best Chocolate Cake, Best Bread and Best Tea Time Favourites.

All cake entries were later sold off to the public, to help raise char-

ity funds, and throughout the afternoon, tea & cakes were served to visitors as they awaited the result of the competition. Local charity, Family Support Group, who organised and ran the event, were happy to announce that the afternoon had raised £400 for their cause.

Following on was this year’s star attraction – an Italian Extravaganza with celebrity guest appearance of Cookery legend, Gennaro Contaldo; star of Two Greedy Italians, restauranteur & author of numerous cookery books. Each runner had a personal story to tell, but two very determined Roberts were outstanding, fully deserving special mention, Nigel Currie of the organising committee explaining: “72 year old Robert Peel is a former Haywards Heath Harrier – he’s now a jogger, rather than a runner after having two heart stents fitted two years ago, and, although he pulled a muscle in his back after moving an olive tree shortly before the race, he still insisted on participating in the Half Marathon, despite the demanding, undulating course. As he jogged and walked his way around he caught up with Robert Frankel, a comparative youngster at age 63, but struggling with a groin injury.

Chatting as they progressed, the two Roberts encouraged each other and kept going valiantly until they crossed the line together in 3 hours 53 minutes.

They were both delighted to be rewarded with bronze medals and a presentation basket of goodies from the Barns Green Linseed Farm - and the products are already being put to good use!”

No charge for DIY waste West Sussex County Council has confirmed that it will continue to allow DIY waste at household waste recycling sites without charges.

Charging for disposing of waste has been suspended since April this year on a temporary basis. Now Deborah Urquhart, Cabinet Member for Environment, has taken a decision not to reinstate charges. She explained: “We said to our residents that we would suspend charging until the Government clarifies its position on the matter. It is not

expected that Government will be in a position to do this for some time, so we have taken the step to confirm we will not charge and look for savings in other ways.”

The Council will continue its drive to increase recycling, in order to drive down the amount that ends up in landfill sites, and put material into good use.

Deborah added: “We throw away £3m of recycling material in our black bag waste each year. Our focus will continue to be on encouraging residents to reuse and recycle more.”

The Weald School opens new buildings Call to help prevent leaves in drains becoming a pain

The Weald School has officially opened a series of new buildings as part of an £11 million expansion and development.

Jeremy Quin MP cut the ribbon to the new block on Friday 22 September, which includes a 450 seat canteen and 22 teaching rooms catering for mathematics and art.

The school welcomed around 50 local community stakeholders for the event, which included a tour of the new facilities.

Headteacher, Peter Woodman, explained: “Our site has been developing over a period of years, but some parts of their infrastructure date back 30-40 years.

It has been fantastic to have these

updated. We now cater for 1700 students and the new facilities are completely fit for purpose and for the size of our community.

“We have not just built a new block but used the opportunity to refurbish a whole range of subject areas around the school. As maths and art have moved into our new block, we have moved and improved other areas. We now have rebuilt PE changing rooms, additional music and drama and photography areas, a bespoke pastoral support suite, extra science labs, special needs and sixth form study areas. Our new media suite even contains a TV studio, which will allow us to broadcast

across the school into all classrooms.”

As part of the opening ceremony, all who were involved were thanked. Mr Woodman noted: “Our main contractor, Sunninghill, has done a magnificent job, with the building being completed with minimal disruption to learning, to a very high standard, on time and on budget”.

The new building was open to parents and students for the school’s Open Evening on Thursday 28 September. Current parents will have an opportunity tour the new build in the coming weeks.

West Sussex County Council are calling for help on the issue of road drains getting blocked by autumn leaves - an annual problem, which increases the likelihood of flooding.

137,000 highways drains and gulleys are maintained by WSCC, across the county, and it is hard to predict where leaves collect and where issues will arise.

The council is calling on residents to help rake leaves away in residential roads, provided they can do so safely. Five minutes spent raking them out of the way can help prevent blockages and potential flooding.

Five top tips: • Stand on the verge or pavement and rake leaves downhill towards you until they are well out of the way.

• Where possible do it in daylight (outside peak hours) when visibility is good, on roads of less than 40mph.

• If you live on a busy street, park your car in front of the drain to create a safety barrier for you.

• Wear something bright so you are clearly visible and other road users know you are there.

• Avoid raking leaves uphill, or into the road, as they will only be blown or washed back into the drain.

Collyer’s announce record numbers of speakers at Careers Surgery

Collyer’s were honoured to welcome back former Collyer’s student, Dr Paul Siklos, who gave another inspiring seminar, covering the application and interview process that the college’s aspiring medical students must negotiate to successfully gain a place at medical school.

Dr Siklos, Associate Clinical Dean of Medicine, University of Cambridge, gave an hour-long session to over 40 first and second year students, detailing the often daunting medical school application process.

Hussey, explained: “The session included how to make an application stand out by crafting an honest and individual personal statement, through to what to expect when called for interview.

“Dr Siklos’ extensive experience offered Collyer’s students an incredible insight into the process. As an old Collyerian, Dr Siklos put our students at immediate ease, and a fantastically productive and active session followed.”

Dr Siklos challenged students to crystallise their motives for studying medicine, then covered key NHS documents, relating to practising modern medicine and

the multi-mini interview process adopted by an increasing number of medical schools.

Rob Hussey added: “The students found the session to be very informative and were incredibly thankful to Dr Paul Siklos for taking time out from his busy schedule to offer his advice and guidance.

“We are very proud of our annual success rates in helping students secure places at medical school.

Not only has this seminar helped focus our second-year students applications, it has also inspired our first year students to pursue their ambition and turn dreams into reality. We are very thankful to Dr Siklos for giving his time for yet another stunning session!”

Historic church tour brings Dickens’ festive classic to life!

Joining forces once more with charity, the Churches Conservation Trust, the Sussex-based theatre company will embark on a historic church tour, starting at St Botolph’s Church, Steyning. Sarah Slator, This is my Theatre, explained: “We are touring A Christmas Carol again this year, as we had so

many requests after last year’s production which was again in CCT churches. I think there is something incredibly special about staging work in these sometimes forgotten buildings, particularly at Christmastime.

“The original story is wonderfully rich and an absolute favourite of mine. The smell of the mulled punch, seeing the characters come to life in beautiful buildings and hearing the audience sing carols throughout the show, makes this one of my favourite productions. Nothing will get you in the mood for the festive season more!”

Safari Supper raises over £800 for children’s hospice

On Wednesday 6 September, the Safari Supper was one of the events to kick off the Steyning and District Food and Drink Festival 2017.

Organised by Shirley, Barbara, Cathy, Lynn and Mary of Chestnut Tree House Steyning Friends Group, the popular Safari Supper has taken place since 2015, and this year has raised £833 for Chestnut Tree House – the children’s hospice for East and West Sussex, Brighton and Hove, and South East Hampshire.

The fun three-course meal allowed guests to enjoy the ambience and cuisine of some of Steyning’s favourite eateries, all in one meal.

Starting with a glass of Prosecco

on arrival, courtesy of sponsors Wiston Estate Winery, the Safari Supper featured Chez Joel, The Cobblestone Tea House, The Sussex Produce Company Café, and The Star Inn. Osborn Humphrey and Compass Mortgages also offered support by providing a complimentary drink during the main course.

In addition to being treated to a range of food and drink, the Safari Supper included a raffle at The Star Inn, with a host of prizes donated by individuals and local businesses, including a one-week stay in Croatia from Chestnut Tree House volunteer, Mary; a hamper from The Sussex Produce Company; a Steyning Butchers voucher, and

a teddy bear from Smiffy Bears in Cobblestone Walk.

Group leaders, Shirley Green and Barbara Sayers, said: “We were delighted with the Safari Supper this year and received lots of positive comments from guests, with several saying it was the best year yet!

“We’d like to thank the Chair and Committee Members of the Steyning and District Food and Drink Festival, for all their support, as well as all the fantastic local eateries involved, and the local businesses who supplied sponsorship and raffle prizes. A special thank you to Nick, Zoe and Gary, and the team at The Sussex Produce Company, for selling tickets for the event.

Packed full of activities, from wine tours and beer tasting to farm walks, cream teas and a tasty bike ride and BBQ, the Food and Drink Festival runs until 8 October.

In addition to the Safari Supper, Chestnut Tree House was also being supported by the purchase of special Charity Dishes at the Artisan Bakery on 26, 27 and 28 September, Balloos Bistro throughout the Festival, The Pizza Oven on Friday evenings, a Charity Breakfast, at The Chequer Inn, still to come on 7 October, and a special BBQ taking place at Stan’s Bike Shack at the end of the Tasty Bike Ride also on 7 October.

Horsham Lions present more High-Vis jackets to local scout and guide groups

Following the provision of HighViz Jackets to Primary Schools requesting them, Horsham Lions extended their offer to local Scout and Guide Groups.

At a presentation at the Guide hut in Denne Road, Horsham, Immediate Past President Lion, Tom Osborne, said: “In its 55th year of suporting the local community, the club is part of Lions Clubs International celebrating its 100th anniversary with over 1.4 million members and represented in 208 countries, including China and Russia.

“The Hi-Viz jackets project started over 2 years ago, when the Club discovered, from the Royal

Society for the |Prevention of Accidents, that in the previous 10 years, more children were injured than any other pedestrians. As a result, 15 Primary schools accepted an offer to provide them with High-Viz jackets. 580 jackets were provided.

The offer was then extended to local Youth groups.

“In 2016, the Co-op Community Fund scheme invited Horsham Lions to become a participant.

Under this scheme, members could choose between three beneficiaries, or, for monies to go into a “joint pot”. 1% of profit on sale of co-op branded goods and services [sic].

The period covered 6 months, at the end of which Horsham Lions

received over £5,200.”

Thanks to the generosity of the Co-op Community Fund, additional jackets have been purchased and 348 were presented to 21 Groups of local Rainbow, Brownies and Guides.

The Guide District Commissioner, Helen Cunnington, thanked the Lions for their gift, which she considered important in providing safety for members of the Guide groups.

A further 836 jackets are soon to be presented to 28 Beaver and Scout Groups. At present, a total of 1,750 jackets have been provided for local Youth groups.

Rate relief for Horsham District businesses A business rates relief scheme, which will benefit hundreds of businesses across the district, was approved by Horsham District Council on 21 September.

In April this year, the rateable value of businesses was changed due to a revaluation by the Government’s Valuation Office Agency. The government subsequently established a £300 million discretionary rate relief fund, to support those businesses that face the steepest increases in their business rates bills as a result of the revaluation.

Horsham District Council’s share of the national pot of money is £789,350 and will be distributed to some 348 small and medium sized businesses over the next four financial years.

Businesses with a new rateable value of between £15,000 and £150,000, and who were subject to an increase in rateable value of more than 7% of their revaluation, qualify under the scheme.

The money will be automatically awarded so there is no need for businesses to apply.

Cabinet Member for Finance and Assets, Councillor Brian Donnelly, said: “We are very pleased that funds have been made available to ease small businesses through the increase in business rates.”

Horsham District Council’s third Jobs and Skills Fair buzzed with the sound of hundreds of jobseekers looking to meet prospective employers on Wednesday 20 September in the Drill Hall, Denne Road, Horsham.

Employers, apprenticeship providers and training companies came from around and beyond Horsham district, covering a broad range of sectors.

Some 37 employers took exhibition stands to showcase their job vacancies, apprenticeships and voluntary opportunities and were swamped by nearly 450 people from the Horsham district and beyond.

From the world of finance were Kreston Reeves and Grant Thornton UK LLP. Engineering was represented by Metricell Ltd and SIGTA Training who specialise in the training of people in the manufacturing and business administration industries. Some five different care companies were present and employers from the hotel and catering and pharmaceutical industries.

Horsham District Council’s Economic Development team organised the event in partnership with Horsham Jobcentre Plus, the

The event was opened by Jeremy Quin MP and Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr. Gordon Lindsay, who outlined the event’s objectives: “We want to encourage our local businesses to grow and helping them find the right staff is to achieving this objective.

“There are plenty of job and apprenticeship vacancies around this year. The aim of the Horsham District Jobs and Skills Fair is to bring local people together with employers to fill those vacancies.

The event has been a great success and many of these vacancies will be filled and more people will be in work as a result’.

There were not only large employers at the fair, but also smaller businesses, such as publisher Usborne Books at Home - a local franchise company.

Piper and Chantry are the choreographers of David Walliams’ Award-winning ‘Gangsta Granny’, which premiered at The Capitol in 2015, before touring the UK and playing at the Garrick Theatre in London’s West End. They are also known as the choreographers of the ‘Horrible Histories’ stage shows, as well as choreographing at international Opera and Dance houses such as Sadler’s Wells and the Royal Opera House.

The pair’s new, innovative full-length dance show, ‘THE SANDMAN’ is a fabulous, original full-length contemporary ballet, in which The Sandman brings sleep by dropping sand into the eyes of humans and uses a magical rainbow umbrella to impart good dreams, or a dark umbrella to send nightmares.

Follow the story of a woman who is desperate to bring good dreams to her ailing husband so desperate that she is willing to follow the Sandman into the DreamWorld to steal the dream umbrellas. There, she meets many bizarre and entertaining characters, including the timid Monster-under-the-Bed, the Puppet who yearns for freedom from his strings, the Unformed Dreams, and of course, The Sandman himself.

The woman steals the dream umbrellas and returns to the real world, where she gives beautiful, magical dreams to her husband and others with the rainbow umbrella.

But what will happen if the umbrellas get mixed up? You’ll have to wait and see...

‘THE SANDMAN’ is a contemporary ballet inspired by the Hans Christian Anderson tale of Ole Lukøje and features an original score by composer, Tim Mountain.

Chantry’s tour is performed by highly skilled international ballet and contemporary dancers, and provides a great evening of entertainment. After seeing the performance, singer and TV presenter, Simon Butteriss, enthused: “... hugely impressive event last night – amazing”.

Butteriss is one of many to be enchanted by The Sandman. Following the start of its tour, the show has received fantastic audience feedback: “Couldn’t believe our eyes.... seamless visual spectacle...the amazing choreography with its endless surprises made us all stop in our tracks.”

The nights are drawing in, and the children are back at school, but whilst for some this heralds the onset of the winter months, the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra is looking forward to their new season of Sunday afternoon concerts at Brighton Dome.

The season opener on Sunday 8 October features works by the greatest masters of Romanticism - Schumann, Tchaikovsky and Brahms. The orchestra, under Conductor Laureate Barry Wordsworth, is joined by exciting young

Romanian pianist, Alexandra Dariescu, playing Tchaikovsky’s popular Piano Concerto No.1, a wonderful piece full of intense melody, surging power and quiet introspection.

Alexandra was recently named as “one of 30 pianists under 30 destined for a spectacular career”,

by International Piano Magazine, and her most recent CD is of this piano concerto and well worth a listen. A keen cyclist, she completed the London to Brighton Bike Ride on a custom built bicycle made for two, in June. She will be arriving by train for the concert though!

The programme also includes Brahms’ lyrical Symphony No.3, which charts a musical journey from turbulence to tranquillity and has a reputation as one of his most artistically perfect works. And the concert opens with Schumann’s dramatic overture to the opera Genoveva, which is full of themes of betrayal and reconciliation in music of exquisite tenderness and high drama, inspired by a medieval German legend and heavily influenced by Wagner.

The Art of Negotiation: Neil Moore of GL & Co Estate Agents Neil Moore, MD at GL & Co Estate Agents, sees yet more similarities between the Brexit talks and property negotiation.

Every negotiation begins with conflict of some sort - different points of view where both sides have strong and seemingly entrenched initial opinions about what each wants. This is the argument stage.

But negotiations can’t proceed if both parties don’t move from those entrenched positions.

Deadlock has to be broken otherwise neither party can proceed to any sort of end, never mind an agreeable one. This means one side has to take the plunge and be the first to make a proposal - to show that they are prepared to soften on their original stated position. This is not weakness. It is strength. It is clever. It is part of the negotiating process, for without a proposal there is stand off.

Theresa May has just made this

first move in the Brexit negotiations. After months of squabbling and posturing on both sides of the channel the British prime minister made a proposal during a speech given in Florence. Any decent negotiator knows that they should reward a reasonable proposal with, at least, a reasonable counter proposal. What will the European Union negotiators do next? Will they stay in the argue stage and stall the negotiation further? Or will they do the smart thing and signal that, they too, are ready to make reasonable concessions which will help kick start the constructive stage of the process?

Property negotiation is just the same. Without concessions there is no progress. Skilled and experienced negotiators understand this. They understand how to read the negotiation road map. Which is why employing an experienced negotiator in the form of a talented estate agent is so important.

The secret to good negotiating is in understanding when to argue and when to make a proposal. For house buyers the final quarter of

2017 may be precisely the right time to make a strong proposal.

So far the property market has had a slow year. This we can really put down to higher property taxes, the general election and Brexit. We certainly can’t put it down to employment and mortgage interest rates.

It may be too soon to call, but there are certain signs that we are approaching, or may even have reached, the bottom of the market cycle. Knowing when to make a move is always difficult. But one thing is certain those people who think they will wait until after the Brexit negotiations are over may well be too late - all the good deals will have been done by people who understand that making a reasonable proposal early is better than reacting when it is too late. The Brexit negotiators should also bear this in mind as they enter the next round of talks this autumn.

Horsham jump all over Gymkhana Saturday September 30 – South League – Premier – Division 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 5 0 Indian Gymnkhana Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Steady rain persisted in Horsham Men’s opening match of the season – their debut appearance, under lights, on the state of the art pitch at Christs Hospital School – but a superlative performance lifted the spirits of players and spectators alike, the adverse weather being but a trivial inconvenience. Relegated last season, Gymkhana made the early running with a short corner but Horsham responded with an attack and, after the first of many Joey Humphreys’ incursions, Ellis Woolley gave the visiting keeper no chance from a set piece. Two more Horsham shorts followed, Woolley converting the second to give Horsham a two nil advantage

at the break, despite being temporarily a man down.

On the resumption Barney Knights-Johnson, a perpetual thorn in Gymkhana’s side, burst through, won tackles and blasted home Horsham’s third. He then broke through again and, facing the wrong way, swivelled and crashed the ball in for a breath-taking goal just inside the far post, later quipping: “Just a trick that I’ve been practising!”

Horsham were treating the crowd to some exceptionally impressive build ups, but Gymkhana had an unfulfilled short corner against the run of play. Horsham, though, were not done, debutant James Groves from Storrington putting the icing on the cake with the fifth goal. Horsham Captain Andy Isaacs told us: “Its not often that we’ve got off to such a great start, so I’m absolutely delighted – we were very disciplined. We’re going to Henley this Saturday and they’ve just lost 6 nil to Bromley & Beckenham!”

At times the game became scrappy and quite heated but the girls managed the situations well and deserved the three points. We want to play an attractive, attacking form of hockey, which the girls have worked hard on so far. There were many solid performances and the diligence and commitment is a credit to them all. Horsham go top with gritty fourth consecutive win Saturday September 30 – London 2 South East Beckenham 25 27 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Much changed Horsham, suffering from injuries and non availability, showed strength in depth in their sternest test to date.

Beckenham has not been a happy hunting ground, but Horsham came away from Balmoral Avenue with a right royal result against one of the big metropolitan clubs. Withstanding early pressure from the formidable Kent side, Horsham were the first to get on the scoreboard when Kyle Fairs combined with Declan Nwachukwu to supply Jake Lowe to complete the opening – unconverted – try. Beckenham, though, promptly took the lead when Leon Driscoll, previously

a Green & Whites junior player, converted a Mike Furness try.

Then, endeavouring to prevent a seemingly certain Beckenham try, Lowe was carded off for a high tackle, enabling the home side to get over the line. The conversion hit the posts, but Beckenham led 12-5. However, Horsham skipper Tom Johnson’s penalty reduced the deficit before the Green & Whites regained the narrowest advantage after Nwachukwu broke through with a speedy try. With the game see sawing, Beckenham succeeded again to be 17-13 to the good at the break. On the resumption the hosts got over again, but although Horsham were now nine points adrift, they maintained determination with a wave of attacks before Fairs notched up a try, Johnson converting to leave the Green & Whites just two points behind. indiscipline reduced Beckenham to 13 players and, with just five minutes left, Nwachukwu burst through the Kentish defence to get under the posts for Johnson to convert, sealing the memorable 25-27 victory, despite a late home foray looking especially threatening. Heading Horsham’s coaching team for the day, Richard “Wes” Bell said: “I’m really pleased with the result – a real gutsy performance. We allowed them to run at us at times, but we scored some good team tries and Declan’s second was outstanding, so he’s my Man of the Match because of his finishing, but it was a great team performance!”

Horsham return home on Saturday for a top of the table clash with high-scoring Dartfordians, who beat Horsham twice last season and, having also won all four of their games, including against top sides, currently lie second, just one point behind Horsham.

After last week’s nightmare 118-0 defeat, the highest in the club’s history, Pulborough demonstrated great spirit to deliver their first win at their highest ever level following last season’s

promotion.

Boro played with determination from the start, and the scoreline was a little deceptive, Dover accumulating late points. Boro took the lead in the eighth minute when Nick Haynes broke through down the right, Frazer OliphantHope converting the try. Six minutes later Ollie Coombe-Tennant crossed the line, giving Boro a 14-0 advantage after Frazer’s boot had again obliged. And, it

promptly got even better when Brad Game completed Boro’s third try, under the posts, Frazer again adding the extras. Dover had possession early in the game but now it was all Boro’s and when Frazer successfully kicked a penalty Boro led 24-0. Despite disappointment at conceding a converted Dover try just before the break, Boro were happy with their more than useful cushion.

Dover, though resumed in fighting mode, quickly adding a converted try to whittle away at Boro’s lead, until a Frazer penalty provided three more points.

Increasingly competitive, Dover were coming more into the game but another penalty, this time kicked by Captain Simon Burfiend, boosted Boro’s advantage to 30-14, before this was eroded by two tries, the first converted, but the second kick – the last of the game - went astray, Boro winning 30-26.

Boro President Alex Steele said: “We knew the opening games would be tough against last season’s better clubs, but we backed ourselves and played much better today. We just need to maintain concentration – we let them back in a bit, but it was a great result.” Boro Head Coach Clayton Saunders told us: “It’s all about performance and we had a great first half. We relaxed just before the break and towards the end, and we’ve got plenty to work on, but I’m proud of our first win at this level.” Boro skipper Simon Burfiend added: “Forget about last week – we were severely depleted and it was a freak result. We’ve had a slow start to the season with quite a few injuries, but this was another big step up today.”

Tomorrow (Saturday) Pulborough visit Kidbrooke, south east London, to play 7th placed Charlton Park, who, in their four games to date have won two and lost two.

St Peter’s Duo Riding High

Football Ian Ford - Sports Development Manager The Horsham District contains two St Peter’s primary schools, one in Henfield and one in Cowfold.

Both got off to a flying start in the first meeting of the Horsham District Primary Schools Football League Year 5+6 first meeting, St Peter’s Henfield winning through a tight Group B in the large schools section and St Peter’s Cowfold winning all four of its matches in the small schools event to head up the halfway standings.

24 teams convened on a miserable September late afternoon but the endeavour shown soon brightened things up in Horsham Park over the six pitches laid out to accommodate the seven-aside format. The 15 large school teams competed across four groups and interestingly it was only the group of three which was won by a team notching a full house of victories. That team was Steyning beating Leechpool A 2-1 and Billingshurst B 3-1 and having goalkeeper Patrick Ford to thank for some good saves along the way. Leechpool A had to be content with runners-up spot although Lucas Medrow’s mazy full-length pitch run and goal, Tom Leicester’s defensive prowess and Rhys Releen’s tireless running were reasons for them to be cheerful nonetheless. Billingshurst B competed well with midfielder Ben Offei being their stand out player.

Southwater justified their favourites tag in style with their B and A teams topping groups A and B respectively. Yes if one Southwater team doesn’t get you the other one probably will. As much as mention of Southwater gets footballers’ knees trembling neither of their teams’ progression was easy. Southwater B relied on goal difference after gaining similar points to Heron Way A, the two sharing a goalless draw in their opening match.

Their goalscoring potency came to the fore next up however with Holbrook being hit for four, Oscar Marriott hitting one from

the halfway line and Charlie Guy getting his first ever school team goal. Heron Way A’s marginal victories couldn’t compare on the goal difference front so they took second and Elliott Peate will draw consolation from being his team’s star player on the night.

Holbrook’s 1-0 win over Kingslea A got them third. They had Harrison Jones showing poise in defence whilst Kingslea’s goalkeeper, Zac Norman, performed admirably to reduce the damage his team suffered.

Southwater A also got off to a shaky start by their standards being restricted to 1-1 by a Greenway B team powered by workhorse Archie Hudson. However

So how did St Peter’s Henfield achieve its group-topping feat? a 3-1 win over Billingshurst A in the next game meant normal service was resumed as year 5’s Josh Baker, Charlie Nichols and Callum Webb got into their stride. Leechpool B felt the full force by the time they came to take on the title-holders. Billingshurst A’s 1-0 last match win over Greenway B saw them take second spot and they were grateful to ‘keeper William Heater for his shot-stopping efforts. Letts Cornish should be proud of his unstinting contribution as part of a Leechpool side that tried hard but struggled against more experienced opponents.

So how did St Peter’s Henfield achieve its group-topping feat?

Superior goal difference was the answer, being required to squeeze out a strong Greenway A challenge. The 2-2 draw the teams fought out in their first match showed how well the two were matched but whilst Greenway beat other teams in the group – Shelley and Heron Way B – con-

fidently, St Peter’s despatched them both with super-confidence, scoring four goals each time. Hugo Cinn was excellent for St Peter’s, showing a steady temperament whilst for Greenway A Bailey Weller got a wonder goal and Archie Robins played consistently well. Alfie Wisniewski scored a great left footed goal as part of a Shelley team that came in third and well done to George Sharp for perseverance as part of a Heron Way B team that kept going despite losing all its matches.

With fewer teams the small schools event was played in a different all v all round-robin format. Last year’s winners, St Peter’s Cowfold, made a statement of intent by winning all of its first meeting games, scoring 16 and conceding none. However St Mary’s Horsham weren’t far behind, only a goalless draw against Loxwood in their last game preventing them from finishing on equal points with the Cowfold crew. St Mary’s goalkeeper Madeleine Sweet was deserving of particular praise after she sustained an injury but refused to be deterred and carried on playing; less Tough Mudder, more Tough Maddie. Could next week’s encounter between these saintly rivals decide the destination of the title?

A clutch of clubs occupy midtable ground and they’re headed

by Plaistow and Kirdford courtesy of goal difference elevating them above two other teams on similar points. They scored impressive wins over Kingslea C and St Robert Southwell but hit the rocks 1-0 against St Mary’s Horsham. Kingslea B was the highest performing of the large school guest teams and striker Joe Bovan with four goals was the key factor behind their thrust, although St Peter’s clipped their wings 4-0. St Robert Southwell was the other member of the 14 point gang. They registered good wins over Kingslea and Billingshurst C teams before Plaistow and Kirdford brought them down to earth with a 3-0 defeat in the last round of matches. Oliver Strut was solid in defence for the Rob Southies.

At the bottom of the middle zone was a Loxwood team which was tight in defence but thin in attack. Only St Peter’s breached the Lox rearguard but they could only score against Billingshurst C. Rusper accumulated eight points on the first football league appearance. After a St Peter’s baptism of fire they recovered well by holding both St Robert Southwell and Kingslea B to creditable draws before they took a 4-0 pasting against a St Mary’s team which had started to buzz.

Bringing up the rear were the plucky Kingslea and Billingshurst C teams. Oscar Taylor was brave between the former’s sticks and chiefly responsible for them achieving a goal difference that kept them off bottom spot.

Billingshurst C let more in but at least managed a goal against St Robert Southwell. Isaac Young was their best performer.

YMCA progress in cup against spirited Billingshurst Tuesday October 3 – Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup Horsham YMCA 2 0 Billingshurst Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Pre season YM beat Billingshurst 8-0 but this Cup encounter was far closer.

YM had 11 corners – none of which were converted – and created plenty of chances, but without Sam Schaaf and the speed and ingenuity of Phil Johnson (both sidelined by injury), and Joe Shelly and Kieran Pamment, who have signed for Horsham and Worthing respectively, finishing was a problem. And, YM survived a scare straight from the off when Aaron Jeal had to produce a good save to prevent Billingshurst from taking an immediate lead. But, in the fifth minute, the ball was played back for Ollie Gill to tap in to put YM ahead. Billi claimed that the ball had gone out of play, but the goal stood. YM then had three corners and Gill shot wide, but Billi had their moments, too, with a corner and then Jordan Stallibrass caused Jeal to dive full length, the ball just passing the post. Further chances followed at either end, Billi hitting the woodwork with Jeal under pressure and Dan Evans and Tom Gilbert unable to get the ball in for YM, the

first half ending 1-0 in their favour when 3-2 might not have been unreasonable. After the break both sides had more opportunities, until, after a quarter of an hour, the ball came out from the right for Gill to score again. Three minutes later YM had a goal disallowed and Gill fired straight at Liam Matthews in the Billi goal, giving the ex Brighton and Crewe keeper little difficulty. The closing stages belonged to YM with four corners - one almost resulting in a Billi own goal – and three shots going adrift, but Billi also got through, only to fire over. YM emerged 2-0 victors, but they made rather hard work of it, Manager Peter Buckland saying: “I am finalising two substantial signings, meanwhile, given our resources we knew it might be a bit laboured and I told the boys ‘let’s just get through it’. Billingshurst are a spirited side– congratulations to them on their effort - its difficult to understand why they’re so far down the Southern Combination Division1 table.” On Saturday YM are in league action again, travelling to high flying Chichester City, while Billingshurst host St Francis Rangers at Jubilee Fields. Then, on Tuesday (10th) YM return home against mid-table Crawley Town Gatwick, again in the SC Premier Division.

Horsham’s good midweek cup win against Premier League Burgess Hill Town hinted that the Hornets’ indifferent league form might improve, but their woes continued with another defeat at Culver Road, Lancing.

Since their last league success at the end of August, the Hornets have drawn one game and lost their last three and, after the Cray game, are 20th in the table.

With injuries and non availability depleting the Hornets, Cray soon had the ball in the net, a Marcus Evans header deceiving Josh James in the home goal. Although understandably set back, the Hornets had attempts, but the efforts of Rob O’Toole and Toby House were thwarted without undue difficulty, until Michael Power notched up Cray’s second goal - from the penalty spot after being floored by James. Then, although goal mouth technology might have suggested otherwise, Cray were kept at bay by the woodwork with visiting supporters convinced that the ball had entered the net. But, they did not have to wait long for a third goal, when Evans and Power combined to finalise a corner. The woodwork came to the Hornets’ aid again before O’Toole and Adam Hunt were unable to convert House’s cross, and, trailing 3-0 at the break, they had a second half mountain to climb. With Cray’s commitment wavering, the Hornets did up-their-game on resumption, but forays from Hunt, O’Toole, Charlie Farmer and House all came to nought. Later, George Landais drew a top save from Nick Blue in the Cray goal, but, it was another difficult league encounter for the Hornets and they will be hoping for revenge when the two teams meet again at Hayes Lane, Bromley in the FA Trophy this Saturday. Meanwhile, the Hornets will be looking to get back to winning ways in their league match against beleaguered neighbours Shoreham

Welcome YM league win with a double against Worthing Saturday September 30 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Div Horsham YMCA 3 1 Worthing United Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After cup success, but three straight league defeats, including one that they will be especially anxious to forget against then bottom of the table Arundel, YM were delighted to notch up three league points with a strong win against Worthing United, whom they had previously crushed in the Peter Bentley Cup. The win against Worthing was all the more satisfying because YM fought back with real commitment after conceding an early goal when Jahobi Maher spotted YM keeper Mark Fox off his line and unleashed a long range

rocket. Five minutes later, YM had an opportunity, but Sam Schaaf was unable to convert a one to one with Mavericks’ keeper Kieran Sills. It then took a great block from Fox to thwart Worthing before, just ahead of the break, Luke Gedling equalised from the penalty spot. The second half belonged to YM, Sam Schaaf putting them in the lead in the 62nd minute, before a ball sent skywards was latched onto by Dave Brown to complete with a looping header to seal YM’s 3-1 victory, leaving Worthing to reflect on their second unsuccessful visit to Gorings Mead this season.

Before resuming league activity against high flying Chichester City, YM, now tenth in the Southern Combination Premier Division, return to cup mode in a local derby against Billingshurst in the Parafix Sussex Senior Cup.

Horsham Sparrows Under 11 girls

Hornets speed through in Velocity Trophy Wednesday September 27 – Velocity Trophy Round 1 Horsham 4 2 Burgess Hill Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Coming in to this Velocity Trophy – League Cup - game, the Hornets had been without a win for almost a month, and had had three straight losses, conceding 10 goals in their last two matches.

But, against Premier Division Burgess Hill Town, the Hornets’ old confidence returned and there was a swagger in their step. True, Burgess Hill were keeping some of their powder dry, resting players for an FA Cup tie, but Horsham were not at full strength either – and they thoroughly deserved their

convincing victory. The omens were not good, however, when Tom Lawley was sidelined by an injury sustained in the warm up, and, the Hornets missed an early goal scoring opportunity, but they were soon lifted when Charlie Farmer found space to head in a corner after Steve Metcalf’s volley was pushed over the bar by Max Huxter in the visitor’s goal. And, it quickly got better, when, after unfulfilled chances at either end, former Hillians’ player Darren Budd unleashed a pile-driver to double the Hornet’s lead with just 16 minutes on the clock. Then, Budd was in action again – with a free kick that Lewis Hyde managed to put in the net to give the Hornets a telling three nil cushion at the break.

Hillians scored next, though,

when, shortly after the restart, Smith-Joseph got the ball past onrushing Horsham keeper Josh James to reduce the deficit, before Hillians threatened again, only to be denied by Steve Metcalf.

The Hornets, too, missed a goal scoring probability, until Jack Newhouse, the young signing from Worthing, shot past Huxter to put the Hornets 4-1 up. A Hillian corner enabled Cheick Toure to head home, but with time fast evaporating, this was only minor consolation and although the visitors came close again, the Hornets ran out deserved 4-2 winners. In the second round, at a date to be announced, the Hornets return to Walton Casuals’ impressive new ground, where they drew 1-1 in the league early in September.
