SprungDigi knows that diversity and digital together make comunities stronger.

Hosted by our learning disabled SprungDigi Crew and trained volunteers you too can enjoy digital workshops, performances and games across the town on the 10th and 11th July. SprungDigi is about keeping safe too. We are making sure that SprungDigi is for everyone.

Henfield earns National Community Heroes award phil dennett

News Editor

Villagers have helped Henfield win the National Community Heroes of the Year Award 2015 for saving lives. Organisers say they were impressed by the way the residents got behind a scheme to get medical help to people quickly. Life-savers and first-aid volunteers are celebrating their success in their category in the St John Ambulance national annual “Everyday Heroes” awards. The charity said the win was because of what it described as “the villagers efforts to introduce an emergency response system to safeguard all its residents”. Henfield, with a population of about 6,000, has raised more than £100,000 since 2004 to fund its local community responder group. The community’s efforts paid for 23 public access defibrillators, which have already been used in 10 heart attack incidents. They have also funded an active response system that has so far responded to 2,400 emergency 999 calls on behalf of the local ambulance service, reducing serious emergency call response times by

an average of 10 minutes a call. They have also funded an emergency kit for each responder. Chairman of Henfield Parish Council Ray Osgood said: “The residents of Henfield Parish and the beautiful surrounding smaller villages and hamlets are extremely proud to receive this award. We have raised more than £100,000 to support the Henfield Area Response Team, HART, and we are equally proud of HART and privileged to have them. “Proud, because they are a great example of what local expertise and initiative can achieve by providing a service, now copied by many other communities, that brings a great sense of medical security to all local residents, and we are very privileged to come under such a dedicated medical service. “Henfield and the other communities have worked had to help provide financial support for HART, but it is the HART volunteers who are the real heroes. People who otherwise would not be alive today are still with us because of them.” Henfield was among nine winners in the Everyday Heroes awards, which were supported by the firm Physio-Control. The star-studded evening was hosted by Sky Sports presenter Kirsty Gallacher, whose father – golfer Bernard Gallacher – was saved with first aid when he

their stories really show the difference that first aid can make. I hope they are all incredibly proud of their achievements and I would urge everyone to follow their example.

Southwater’s new Dino Park

Children will join in the new Dinosaur Island adventure play area opening ceremony at Southwater Country Park on Saturday. They will be involved in launch celebration from noon until 4pm, taking part in a dinosaur procession, with prizes for the best dinosaur costumes. The youngsters can enjoy dinosaurthemed face painting, boats to race on the lake, bones to play with and a Hunt the Dinosaur competition. The Southwater Infants Academy School Choir will perform dinosaur songs and a firework display by Aurora Fireworks will round off the day. Live music, a Skate Jam at the Skate Park, arts, crafts and much more will all be available. ‘Dinosaur Island’ features a volcano with red hot lava flows, tar quagmire, dinosaur swamp and prehistoric jungle. Children of all ages will be able

to discover dinosaur bones in the sand and deadly swampland, swing through the jungle, climb the volcano, zip wire across lizard infested ditches and traverse aerial walkways to look out over the Country Park lake. The event is organised by Horsham District Council and Southwater Parish Council. The district council, working with the parish council and West Sussex County Council, says it has also improved car parking arrangements in and around the Country Park area. But it warns during the fun day parking will be limited so if possible it would be better to walk or cycle. If you have any ideas on how the facilities at Southwater Country Park can be improved, you may let the district council know via e mail on press@horsham.gov.uk or call 01403 215571.

Elephantastic, the follow-up to the successful 2013 Giraffe Trail in Horsham, is due to start on July 26. More than 170 of the decorated large model elephants will be scattered throughout the town and the surrounding countryside over five weeks. There will be a variety of associated events and competitions to entertain the whole family connected to the elephants. Elephantastic will raise funds and

Golfers raise money to save lives Explore the potential of Gatwick says West Sussex Council leader Gatwick Airport’s potential should be maximised even thought it might not get a second runway. The call came from Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, after it was announced Heathrow was the recommended choice. "Although the Commission has recommended allocating a new runway to Heathrow Airport, there is still scope for increased use of Gatwick Airport. Even without a second runway, flight and passenger numbers are projected to rise over the coming years so there will still be effects on the economic opportunities for our county and the communities within it. It is important to maintain and optimise the potential of Gatwick Airport in its current configuration - one runway and two terminals.”

Left to Right - John Stevens, Air Ambulance Paramedic Alan Cowley, Dr Tom Breen and Jane White Golfers at West Chiltington Golf Club have managed to raise more than £3,000 for lifesaving charity Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance. The Mens and Ladies Captains held a number of events at the 18-hole course including a 24-hour golf challenge, a black tie dinner and dance, and an auction. There was also a raffle with prizes

including a golf hat signed by 30 ProAm players and celebrities such as Rory Mcllroy, Ernie Els, Tim Henman and Ian Botham. In total they raised £3,202 for the air ambulance which relies almost entirely on public donations. Each callout costs about £2,500 so the substantial sum raised could effectively help save a life. Men’s Captain John Stevens and

Ladies Captain Jane White presented their cheque, John said: "The air ambulance is a real necessity and certainly gives a far better chance of survival and full recovery to anyone unfortunate enough to have a serious accident.” Jane added: "It's a great charity that any one of us could be in need of as we go about our lives, not that we want it to.”

Farewell to head teacher on Sunday Pupils, parents, governors and the wider community of Pulborough are preparing to say goodbye to St Mary’s C of E Aided Primary School head teacher at the school’s Summer Fayre on Sunday . Alyson Heath will be retiring at the end of the summer term after more than 12 years service to the school. Colleagues say that during that time she has worked tirelessly to make it an outstanding primary school and one that often sets an example for many others. This year’s Summer Fayre is set to be charged with emotion as well as the usual fun and games it offers to all. Not only will fayre-goers be able to wish Mrs Heath farewell but they will also be able to watch the excitement of the Wimbledon Men’s final on the big screen. Mrs Heath said: “The school’s Summer Fayre is our major fund-raising event of the year and one that is not only enjoyed by our children and parents but also the wider community. “As this is my last Summer Fayre, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people and businesses who have supported the school over the years. It is this level of support that helps to make St Mary’s such a special school and I am extremely grateful to you.” The Summer Fayre opens at 1pm at the school in Link Lane, Pulborough. As well as being able to watch the Wimbledon Men’s Final, the fayre offers something for all of the family including BBQ and Pimm’s tent, bouncy castle, tea room, coconut shy, tombola, Hook-a-Duck, lucky dip and much more. The fayre is organised by the school parent-teacher association.

Horsham District Council has welcomed the recommendation. Cllr Ray Dawe, district council leader, said: “We have constantly made it clear that a second runway at Gatwick would have

It is important to maintain and optimise the potential of Gatwick a fundamental impact on the general character of the district and on the lives of everyone who works and lives here. We are therefore extremely relieved that Sir Howard has listened to, and understood, our concerns.”

Great turnout for Cowfold’s big day Villagers turned out in force for the first Cowfold Festival. Fine weather helped draw about 1800 people to the recreation ground from noon on Saturday for the afternoon events, and about 700 watched the evening entertainment that went on until 11 pm. It was the first time the village had held the re-vamped event since a name change from Cowfold Fate. Youngsters lapped up the miniature train rides of Aiden Favell, while the dazzling fairground offered rides of a speedier kind. Dog lovers brought along their pets in the hope of capturing a title in the dog show, and bird lovers flocked to the Owls Out and About attraction, with the opportunity of getting up close to attractive creatures like Willow the barn owl.

Photos by Phil Dennett

Beat the goalie and throw the 'welly' were among the challenges, while there was plenty of energy from the Horsham Black Dragon Morris Dancers, a mixed ‘side’ whose dances include some Cotswold-style movements unique to Horsham. The horticultural show had some charming exhibits including the attractive Apple Blossom climbing rose of Lesley Etherton, winner of the Innes Cup for the outstanding floral and foliage exhibit. An impressive display of old cars, including a stunning 1959 Mercury Monterey from Eric Collard, of Burgess Hill, was among the attractions in the classic and sports car show, and local groups took the chance to get into the spotlight with stalls.

The Weald School’s ‘green car’ racers head for more success

Green car in action

Students are heading for autumn finals with their “green” car after giving it an electronic boost. The youngsters at Weald School, Billingshurst, took a big step towards retaining the National Greenpower Car championship title they won last October with success in heats at Goodwood. Greenpower car racing involves racing cars built by students aged 11 to 16, and powered by two car batteries. Schools from all over the country compete. The heat at Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit involved 58 cars. Students raced over an hour and a half, with the winner being judged by who has covered the most distance in the time.

In race one the school’s “Purple Predator” won, with last year’s champion car coming in third place. In race 2 the same cars achieved second and sixth place. These results secure the places of both cars in the national final later in the year. Year 10 student Max Mooney said: “We were really pleased with how the cars run but we have much more to do and we know we can go faster and further. We added some sophisticated electronics to the “Purple Predator” for this race, and it worked a treat”. The Weald cars will be in action in a few weeks’ time at Rockingham Race Track, where the students and cars hope to perform even better.

The Forest Falcon from Forest School Horsham, raced at Goodwood and was placed 27th overall having travelled 28.8miles at a top speed of 19.5 mph. Within the kit car race, for those teams that are using the Greenpower supplied kits, Forest Falcon placed 5th. The boys are racing again at Dunsfold in September. For the competition students design and build an electric car, powered by batteries, and race it. The motor and batteries are common to all cars, but designs vary widely. Currently an event is over two races which last for one and a half hours, with each race on a single set of batteries and a minimum of three drivers.

Champion charity shop Quick-masterpiece nets Nepal firefighter celebrates after success £20,000 for charity rescuers thanked A team of West Sussex firefighters has been officially thanked for their international search and rescue work following the devastating earthquake in Nepal. Six members of the county’s Technical Rescue Unit were part of the UK team that flew out to help following April’s devastating quake, that left more than 8,000 people dead and countless homeless. They were tasked with searching an area north of Kathmandu’s centre in the suburb of Chandol, along with surrounding areas. The West Sussex unit is based in Horley, but members come from across the county. Five of the six who travelled to Nepal - Matt Simmons, from East Wittering; Owen Marfany, from Horsham; Antony Walker and Neil Graham, from Shoreham; and Joe Sacco, from Worthing – spent ten days on the humanitarian mission. Their team leader, Adrian Kirkpatrick, from Crawley Down, remained in Nepal a few days longer while arrangements were made for key equipment to be returned home. As well as providing vital humanitarian aid, international missions allow our firefighters to bring back vital skills for incidents closer to home. As the West Sussex team leads on logistics for the UK they also arranged for a local vet to travel with them to care for the search and rescue dogs who travelled to Nepal. The whole team, along with their families, was invited to West Chiltington and Thakeham Cricket Club for an event hosted by West Sussex County Council chairman Pat Arculus,. After welcoming everyone Cllr Arculus thanked the team for their dedication in protecting our residents and in their work abroad and said: “I would like to give special recognition to the families who are left behind and to those who support the team at home.” She was joined by vice chairman Lionel Barnard, cabinet member for residents’ services. David Barling and council leader Louise Goldsmith, who told members of the rescue unit: “We all thank you for your commitment and for always being on standby to go out and help people in situations that must be incredibly difficult and challenging. We also very much appreciate your work in West Sussex. I honestly believe we have the best Fire and Rescue Service in the country.” These thanks were echoed by Sean Ruth, executive director of communities and public protection and chief fire officer, who said: “You are a really skilled and motivated team, not just with the work you do overseas but for everything you do every day for communities across West Sussex. You have all been invited tonight because it is a real team effort, there is the team that stay behind and provide cover here and the support you all receive to do this from your families.” The TRU was set up in 2006 and the mission to Nepal is the sixth the team has undertaken in as many years, following previous efforts to help in Indonesia, Haiti, New Zealand, Japan and Bosnia.

Charity champs from Horsham threw a party and thanked the public for their success. Cancer Research UK in East St won the national charity’s 'Shop of the year 2015'. Shop manager Victoria Francis said: "The volunteers and I are over the moon to have won this fantastic award; we all work very hard to keep the shop full and tidy. “We would like to thank the peo-

S u ss

ple of Horsham for their support. “We really wouldn't have won this without our supporters bringing in quality items for us to sell in our charity shop. “We have a lovely team of over 50 volunteers who average 180 hrs of volunteering per week, ranging from the ages of 15 to 80. We have three volunteers who have been here for over thirty years. They are brilliant!”

The Horsham-based Born Free Foundation received £20,000 for an oil painting created in only 45 minutes. One of Britain’s finest impressionist artists, Sherree Valentine Daines, raised the money by her original oil painting in front of a 300-strong audience.A new five-minute timelapse film international wildlife enables viewers to watch the painting process from start to finish.

The artwork, which is entitled ‘Study of a Lion’, depicts one of the majestic creatures, and is one of only a few paintings by Daines to feature a wild animal. Before the paint had a chance to dry, Flog It’s James Lewis, world snooker champion Willie Thorne and Homes Under the Hammer’s Martin Roberts stepped up to open bidding, sending it soaring to £20,000 at Derby’s annual ‘Pride in the Park’ Ball.

Military show a record breaking hit A showcase of military metal and mechanics broke charity records. More than 3,000 fans at the weekend’s two-day Capel Military Vehicle Show raised just over £5,000 for Help For Heroes, which was twice the amount raised last year. Highlights included a Chinook helicopter landing on Saturday and staying for the day. It had been used in the Falklands, Bosnia, Gulf War, Iraq and other conflicts and also used for humanitarian aid in Pakistan.

The crowds, who included comedian Al Murray and his family, saw a huge range of more than 200 vehicles at Aldhurst Farm, from military motor cycles to menacing-looking main battle tanks and powerful frontline helicopters. Serving Flight Lieutenant Andrew Davidson, one of the organisers, said: “We promised that this show would be bigger and louder than ever and we were true to our word.” On these pages the Post presents a snapshot of the action.

We have been using the Resident and Clive G Hancocks subsequently, The District Post for Director advertising since the launch of the paper. Whilst it is difficult to quantify results, I would say that as a free paper, delivered around the whole Horsham District and picked up from selected places in the area, they are friendly to deal with, professional, very helpful with design and swift to print. Deadline is Wednesday for a Friday print and they have NEVER let us down! We use this paper exclusively. Because it is a free paper and the best known for that around the area, the circulation is getting bigger by the week/month and therefore I would recommend highly as THE advertising vehicle to use.

Dancers discovered there was no rationing of goodwill and fun as a 1940s-50s dance session raised £1500 for a charity. Age UK Horsham District entertained 115 guests at the town’s Drill Hall with a ‘Strictly Vintage ‘themed tea dance. Guests of all ages dressed what organisers described as “magnificently” in vintage style outfits and the afternoon was spent dancing to music from the eras provided by The Legionnaires Dance Band. During the interval guests were treated to a delicious afternoon tea on vintage china served by ‘Splendid Occasions’ with music during the break provided by Kerry Le Bern, known as ‘The Lady sings’, and saxophonist Dave Funnell together forming ‘Jazz a Deux’. Guests so enjoyed this interlude that many continued to dance! One guest said: “I used to come to the Black-out dances at the Drill Hall many years ago - and it’s been lovely to have a dance again today.” Community Fundraiser Angie De Ath said: “The Strictly Vintage Tea Dance has proved in its second year to be a great success and is now very firmly on the dancing map of Horsham. “ We have already booked the date of Saturday 26th June for 2016 and hope that our guests will return next year to have another wonderful afternoon of dancing and to support our charity.” Janice Leeming Chief Executive of Age UK Horsham District compered for the day and thanked the Horsham business community, including Partridge Green brewery ‘Dark Star’ who sponsored the event, for being integral to its success.

Digital drive continues Living Landscapes at Hampton Court after successful meeting Horsham becoming the UK’s next Digital Hub is looking more and more like a possibility, following a successful Business Breakfast Meeting at Tanbridge House School last week, to explore new IT/tech opportunities in the town. Businesses and individuals, working within the digital industries, attended the event from across Sussex and the South East, in order to discuss opportunities and ideas for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, The Arts and Maths) in the area, with a view to Horsham becoming the next key area for these industries in the UK. The aim of the meeting was to highlight the desire to make the digital industries accessible to young people; benefit local start-ups and wider business interests and corporate responsibilities; bridge the gap between industry/commerce and schools; support the local community; discuss the ‘Futures’ room (new technologies available to students and the local community) and networking opportunities. Featuring guest speakers from BlockBuilders, Curiosity Hub, Red River, University of Brighton, SmashFest UK and Creative Assembly, a number of key ideas were discussed (including how to nurture and retain talent), bringing tech opportunities to people of all ages, engaging young people in STEAM and what Horsham can offer versus London/Brighton.

Addressing an audience of around 50 people, Tanbridge students gave a presentation on how technology affects their lives, and answered questions about the idea of school science days (on the same scale as sports days), how computing/coding is taught in primary and secondary schools, and more. The event, which was fully booked, has inspired some exciting collaborations and initiatives for the area already, including Horsham taking part in the national Festival of Code, which invites teams of young people to spend a week inventing a unique idea to create a website, app, game, algorithm or hardware hack, using open data (http://festival.yrs.io/). The event was organised through an ongoing partnership with Tanbridge House School, Hack Horsham, Creative Assembly and Horsham Blueprint. It supports some ongoing projects between the team, including Coder Dojo workshops (teaching young people how to code, with the help of expert teachers and mentors from Creative Assembly) and an innovative design project in Primary Schools, which asked children to redesign Horsham using Minecraft and view it using Oculus Rift 3d headsets. If you would like to find out more or to register your interest in the next event, please contact Sally Linsell at Tanbridge House School atslinsell@ ths.uk.net or call 01403 755981.

Horsham-based landscaping business, Living Landscapes, has been awarded two Silver Gilt medals at this year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The firm rose to the challenge of sponsoring and building two gardens in the Summer Gardens category, City Twitchers and H U G: Healing Urban Garden, both of which have wowed the RHS judges. Tecwyn Evans, Director of Living Landscapes, says, “It is a great honour to receive Silver Gilt medals! We are delighted to be recognised at this prestigious show, in its 25th anniversary this year. Our two gardens were very different and we are thrilled that the judges found a high level of merit in both the gardens.”

Bird-lovers paradise Sarah Keyser designed the City Twitchers garden to show the potential of a small urban garden to be stylish and contemporary, while enabling birds and wildlife to flourish. The garden balances ‘soft’ rustic elements with structured, modern shapes. A spherical bird hide provides a snug setting for bird watching, while a downy camomile lawn adds a soothing fragrance. The judges complemented the overall effect of the garden. Serenity in an urban setting Designed by Rae Wilkinson, the H U G: Healing Urban Garden is based on the idea that green space in an urban environment can have a lasting positive impact on wellbeing.

The H U G Garden is a sensory hug provided by a small, simple green space, aimed at giving city dwellers a serene spot in which to get back to nature and restore balance. The judges said the garden was one point away from being awarded a Gold Medal. Living Landscapes’ awards Living Landscapes is a previous medal winner at RHS shows. Its ‘Four Corners’ garden with designer Peter Reader was awarded a Silver Gilt medal and won the People’s Choice Award at Hampton Court in 2013. In 2014, he won two further Silver Gilt medals: for the WellChild Garden, with designer Olivia Kirk, at Chelsea; and for the Al Fresco Garden, with Peter Reader, at Hampton Court.

Slinfold’s Pink Golfers raise £5,000 for charity The eagerly awaited 'flag ship' event at Slinfold Golf & Country Club, Pink Day, did not disappoint. The event, in it's 5th year, saw 100 golfers resplendent in pink, competing for the prestigious Brenda Jackson Charity Cup. Golfers, helpers and staff in pink, pink flags, and pink cakes, set the scene for this fun 'Texas scramble' event. The day was kicked off by the traditional auction for favourable tees and shotgun start, which was proceeded by registration and purchase of raffle tickets. The halfway house was adorned by Pink toped fairy cakes in every shade and size imaginable. The fairways found and the exquisite greens conquered - eventually. The pink players gathered in the clubhouse for the traditional auction and prize presentations. With 13 auction lots, ranging from tickets for the BBC Proms in the

Park, and beautiful silver cufflinks, to vouchers for the prestigious Cowdray Park and Fox Hills, the auction alone raised over £1,100, thanks to the skills of auctioneer Tony Tisshaw. Everyone was a winner at this memorable day; a little or a lot lighter in wallet or purse perhaps, but well worth it, supporting two worthy charities. The actual winners of the Charity Cup were Men's Captain Clive Wright (8), David Robinson (8), Kevin Crump (7) and Bertie Chambers [0] with a very impressive score of 53.7, which included 12 birdies and 2 eagles, nearly 4 strokes ahead of Beckie Mabbutt, Igor Lemmens, Mike Lowery and Melanie Wedgbury, on 57.9. Third place was won by Ian Massbery, Sue Thompson, Andy & Sue Puttock with 58.1 Nearest the pin prizes were won

by Brenda O'Brien, Sue Thompson and Anne Ditchfield, for the ladies, and the men, Fred Ransley, Ian Massbery and Bertie Chambers. Presentations completed, it was time to appreciate just how generous the event supporters had been. With a cheque from Waitrose, donations from The Red Lyon (Slinfold), Julie & Martin Babisters Coffee day, the supporters raised £5,200! Pink Day has raised £28,250 over the past five years. As previously, 100% of the monies collected will be divided equally between the local Macmillan Nurses at Midhurst and Breakthrough Breast Cancer UK. The organisers Barbara Wilson and Peter Jackson would like to thank the golf club and staff, all the hard working volunteers, and the extensive support of the players in making Pink Day such a successful and enjoyable day!

Merger ensures health Sainsbury’s Horsham helps charity of Storrington & Adur Residents of Storrington and Adur areas have access to more health and fitness facilities after the merger of two groups. West Chanctonbury Recreation Association and Adur Community Leisure joined forces earlier this year. Members of Impulse Leisure’s Lancing Manor, Southwick, Wadurs and Chanctonbury Sport and Leisure centres can now use facilities at all four sites as part of their standard membership. The new arrangement gives both new and existing members access to three fully equipped TechnoGym

fitness suites, more than 130 exercise classes in three group exercise studios and a spin studio, 16 badminton courts as well as outdoor tennis courts. In addition, members can take advantage of 30 hours of swimming lessons at the 25-metres swimming pool at Wadurs, relax in a choice of three sauna and steam rooms and enjoy a well-earned break in any of the centres’ bars and cafes. Impulse Leisure has registered charity status and is a not-forprofit organisation. It operates seven leisure facilities in the West Sussex and Essex regions.

Award for council staff Community responders have received a £3,000 boost from Sainsbury’s in Horsham as part of the Local Charity of the Year scheme. The group was chosen by customers and colleagues last June and has received support from the store for the past year. Sussex Wildlife Trust is leading fun-packed outdoor activity days for children across the county throughout the summer holidays. From bug-hunting, survival skills, camouflage games, rockpooling, to arts and crafts from natural materials; there is something for everybody.

‘Wild Woodies’ may join in the muddy minibeast mayhem in the woods, or be shipwrecked on the shore and need to learn how to light a fire and forage for food. They might dip a net into the pond to explore the weird and wonderful creatures of the underwater world, or sweep-net the grassy meadow

for interesting insects; there will be plenty to keep the children happy. Wild Woodies clubs are running at Woods Mill Nature Reserve near Henfield; Stanmer Park, Brighton; Seven Sisters Country Park near Seaford; Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and Tilgate Park, Crawley.

Children do not need to be accompanied by an adult as the clubs are fully supervised. Online booking is essential, for further information on age suitability, activities, times, dates and prices please visit: www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/whatson or call 01273 497561.

Fun to be had at Southwater Water Sports

Its that’s time of year again, when the school summer holidays are fast approaching and, for some, they've already begun. There's a lot of fun to be had, right here on our doorstep. Southwater Watersports are based in the beautiful surrounding of Southwater Country Park and have something for everyone. Whether you’re a family looking for something fun to do, a club who wants an exciting sport for your

members, or want to become a qualified watersports coach, you’ll find it all here. Throughout the holidays, the centre will be running a wide range of activities that are ideal to get kids active and having fun outdoors. From canoeing and kayaking, to raft building and crew days, a fun packed adventure can be enjoyed by all! The centre is run by a small, friendly group of experts, who are passionate about all activities on the

water. The talented team (who can train children as young as 8) aims to offer watersports to everyone, whatever their level of expertise. All trainers are backed up by National Governing Body Qualifications. The Holiday kayaking Paddlepower courses, or the Sailing courses for children, will be: 4 mornings (9.30am to 12.30) or 4 afternoons (1.30pm to 4.30pm), There is a free Friday kids club throughout the summer holidays, for the children

that have been on the courses from 9.30am to 11.30am or 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Families will be encouraged to visit Southwater for sailing or kayaking, every Sunday, throughout the summer holidays, at 11am, 12.30pm or 2pm. To avoid disappointment, the centre recommends early booking. For more information and to book, call 01403 734424 or visit www. southwatersports.co.uk

Welcome news for five lucky families looking for a stunning new executive home in the East Grinstead area! Leading Sussex estate agents Cubitt & West are proud to announce the launch of a brand new, highly select development in the village of Felbridge. The latest project from highly regarded Surrey-based housebuilders Woldingham Homes, The Hamptons is an impressive gated development of just five superb detached fivebedroomed family homes that set new standards for executive housing in the area, combining traditional external styling and materials with interiors designed and equipped to meet all the requirements of 21st century family living, including superbly crafted fitted kitchens, contemporary bathrooms and the latest in energy efficient technology. While each of the five homes differs subtly in terms of detailed layout, they all feature luxurious fivebedroom accommodation spread over three floors, with a minimum of three en suites, together with two formal reception rooms plus a study and open-plan kitchen/family room. Four of the properties have attached garages, while one has a detached garage with an additional en suite bedroom above. One – Broadhurst – also boasts a swimming pool. The exceptionally high specification includes superb fitted kitchens with granite worktops and a full range of high quality integrated appliances; stylish designer bathrooms and en suites; and underfloor heating to the ground floor. Yet with all this quality and exclusivity, prices for The Hamptons start at just £850,000. The official launch of the development takes place this Saturday 11th at Cubitt & West’s offices in East Grinstead. So, if you’re in the market for a brand new executive family home of exceptional quality in a highly exclusive setting, get down to Cubitt & West on Saturday – or telephone them on 01342 314324 – and register your interest. But whatever you do, don’t delay. With only five homes available in total, demand for The Hamptons is sure to exceed supply!

Guy Leonard & Co Property Market Comment Neil Moore, MD at Guy Leonard & Co, explains why having support when selling/buying is important It was two hundred years ago when Napoleon met his Waterloo – at Waterloo. Meeting one’s own Waterloo comes to all of us from time to time. I can think of many occasions in property when deals have gone sour, buyers have faltered leaving bitter sellers or sellers have changed their minds at the last minute leaving very frustrated buyers. Sometimes mortgages haven’t materialised or for some legal or survey reason the wheels have come off a transaction. Stuff happens. But sometimes stuff needn’t happen. A well-planned sale or purchase in the hands of an experienced expert has a great deal more chance of success than an ill-planned attempt put in the hands of the inexpert. For those who don’t move home very often – and that is most of us - the property market can be a confusing place in which to find oneself. There are so many conflicting claims and counter claims and so many differing points of view. It is difficult sometimes to know what to do for the best. But it is not a good idea to start by doing things on your own with no expert back up. It is also sen-

sible not to start with a cut-price estate agent because mostly all one gets is a cut-price service with a cut-price return. Some sellers who haven’t moved for many years may find lots of different and unfamiliar estate

It’s better by far to choose a longer established firm with a strong and enduring reputation and established links with the local community agency names locally and won’t know which to turn to. This is because over the years firms come and go. So it is perhaps best to choose a firm that has not recently come and will not shortly be going. It’s better by far to choose a longer established

firm with a strong and enduring reputation and established links with the local community. These are the ones with staying power and for one reason – they are good at getting people moved. But don’t confuse long established with dated. Today all estate agents are online estate agents. They have to be online, it is the ways things are now. But those who simply call themselves ‘online’ are often merely internetonly firms. The fuller-service firm brings a lot more to the party, which is why the cost can be higher. But the rewards can be much greater. It is tempting to be cynical about the property industry. But it would be better to resist that urge. Oscar Wilde described a cynic as 'a man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing’. It is easy to save a few pounds here and there on service but it could cost thousands and even tens of thousands in the long run – I’ve seen that happen too. Stuff happens – ask Napoleon. But stuff needn’t happen with the right support – ask Wellington, or call the team at Guy Leonard & Co Estate Agents on 01403 248222.

Pulborough’s win keeps league momentum going Bowls Jane Gray – Pulborough BC As the temperatures neared 30 degrees last week, Pulborough played host to teams from all over Sussex, in their Annual Ladies Invitation Triples Event, sponsored by Comyn and James Estate Agents. 10 teams played a total of 20 ends with the top 2 teams playing off for the winners shield. Competition was fierce, with Pulborough and Norfolk being tied on equal points. The Pulborough triple of Treacle, Jane Gray and July Day, were just beaten to second place on ends won. The final was between Norfolk and Preston A with the Preston team of Val Aldridge, Brenda Bailey and Kate Sayers snatching victory. The day was a huge success under the leadership of organiser, Jan Barnes, who did a fantastic job. Thursdays away game against

local rivals Billingshurst, didn't go Pulborough's way, but top rink for Pulborough went to skip, Mick Ralph, number 1 Jane Gray and number 2 Colin Andrews 16/11. A trip to Middleton-on-Sea on Saturday produced a win in the West Sussex Bowls League. 4 rinks played over 21 ends and out of the 3 winning rinks, the tightest game came from skip, Matt Ives and team, who were 9 shots ahead at half way, but were hauled back to win by just 1 shot. Paul Day and team managed 3 shots over their opposition and top rink went skip John Brown, won 24/16. The final score was an incredible 74/74 and 7 league points to Pulborough, to keep them in the top third of the Division 3 table. Sunday saw the hotly contested Stratton Cup played on the green at Pulborough with 8 triples playing a total of 20 ends. The old hand of Len Adsett, guided his team to

an impressive victory after a fourth sector white wash gaining them 13 valuable points and handing them the victory and the winner’s trophy. Hugh Hubbard and team came in second with +11 and Paul Day and team took third with +8 shots. The trophy was presented by Ade Stratton, proudly carrying on the Stratton connection with Pulborough Bowls Club by becoming a member several years ago. The Pulborough four of Steve Adsett, Matt Ives, Chris Etherington and John Brown played in the County Quarter finals in Lindfield, unfortunately they missed out on a place in the semi finals by just 1 shot. Matt Ives played in the Quarter Finals of the singles competition against David Moses from Mackie and won 21/18, He will now face Alec Martin from Hastings, in Lewes this week, good luck to Matt from all at Pulborough BC.

Wins for Storrington in Rudridge continue support and sponsorship of Horsham FC under 16s the heat of the day

Horsham FC under 16 squad Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor

Howard White’s team had a convincing win against Henfield Bowls John Wharmby – Storrington BC On a hot Monday afternoon four, mixed, Storrington teams welcomed Henfield B.C. to their grounds. The captain's team, of Pat Petrie, Alan Head & Geoff Page could not prevent Henfield moving remorselessly ahead to win 28 - 9. However Howard White's team woke up to the threat after the 12th end, with the score standing at 12 - 9, and opened up to finish 28 - 15, - good, but not good enough. Richard Pettet's team of Margaret Bishop, Ian Petrie & Richard were level at 11 - 11 after the 14th end but changed gear to finish 18 - 11, just sufficient to give an overall winning score by one shot. The overall result therefore depended on the team of Pat Brooks, R. Naldreth & Brian Bona outplaying Henfield. After the14th end the score was still a nail- biting 13 - 10, so it was with a sigh of relief that Storrington went on to finish 19 - 11, giving a final, overall, score of Storrington 74 shots, Henfield 65. Peter Smith, Chris Walter & Howard White won 28 - 15

Pat Petrie, Alan Head & Geoff Page lost 7 - 28 Margaret Bishop, Ian Petrie & Richard Pettet won 18 - 11 Pat Brooks, R. Naldreth & Brian Bona won 19 - 11 Final score - Storrington 74 – 65 Henfield Two days later Storrington were visited, on another hot day, by Arundel B. C. for a league game. David Ogley's team narrowly lost on the last end, 20 - 21, as did Peter Newman’s team, 18 - 20. However Howard White's team narrowly won 19 - 15, while Paul Leatherbarrow's team won decisively 24 - 13, resulting in an overall win for Storrington of 81 shots to 69 for Arundel, giving them 6 league points and Arundel 4. Geoff Page, Gerry Newman, Ian Younger & David Ogley lost 20-21 R. Naldrett, David Bain, Chris Walter & Howard White won 19-15 Peter Smith, John Rimmer, Tony Gledhill & Peter Newman lost 18-20 Mick Obrien, Alan Head, Harry Kendall & Paul Leatherbarrow won 24-13 Final score – Storrington 81- 69 Arundel. League Points 6-4 to Storrington.

The Horsham branch of civil engineering material specialists, Rudridge, has announced that it will be continuing its sponsorship of the under 16 squad at Horsham Football

Club. The under 16 squad won every game last season and eventually went on to win the league with maximum points. The team is looking forward to next season, having been promoted to Division 2 of the Sussex Sunday Youth League and is

planning a good run in the Sussex County Cup. The sponsorship funding from Rudridge will go towards a new ‘away’ strip and training tops for the team. Rob McLeod, Manager of Horsham Football Club under 16s, commented: “We are very pleased that Rudridge has agreed to continue its sponsorship of the team and we are looking forward to another positive season, hopefully with more silverware to come.” John Chesson, Branch Manager at Rudridge Horsham, said: “The Horsham under 16 team did spectacularly well last season and we’re really pleased for their promotion to Division 2 - it’s well deserved. We enjoy being involved with the local community and we’re proud to continue our sponsorship of the team for next season.”

Horsham Darts League continue their support for charity ‘Lest We Forget’ Darts Dave Smith – Sports Editor All teams except one attended the recent AGM of the Horsham & District Darts League. Chairperson Glenda Wickersham thanked everyone for their continued support to the league and for their generosity in both the collecting boxes and cup night raffles resulting in the league being able to make

a donation of £1970.00 to the Lest We Forget Association. The latest donation brings the grand total collected over the leagues history to a fantastic £76,703.00. The league committee was re-elected with the addition of Ady Davey as League Secretary; Lee Burlton from the Cat & Canary may also join the committee at a later date. The Roffey Club (£270.46) and Runner up The Railway, Billingshurst

Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter After impressive batting performances in their two previous games Horsham’s frailty returned, East Grinstead breezing home with ten overs in hand.

Batting first Horsham created a sound platform at 68-2 but although eight batsmen reached double figures, Tom Haines (43) and James Johnson (31) leading the way, wickets fell all too regularly, Horsham closing on an inadequate 188, after being 161-9. George Garton took two wickets on his Horsham debut and Kevin Stoute and Michael Munday were also successful but unbeaten fifties from Ollie Graham and Sussex’s Lewis Hatchett enabled East Grinstead to recover from 76-4 to get over the line without further alarms.

Michael Munday told the District Post: “When we won the toss our aim was to post 250, which we needed against East Grinstead – they’re a good side. Although some half chances didn’t go our way we bowled well enough, but realistically we just didn’t get enough runs.” Horsham drop one place to fifth and tomorrow (Saturday June 11) entertain strugglers Eastbourne (with just two wins from ten games). it didn’t work, so the car was a real handful to drive after the first half an hour. The baseline is not bad but we need to revert back on the changes so we have some work to do. From my perspective, I am quite happy with how I did and from the team’s perspective, it wasn’t the most encouraging but at least we know the right direction to go in. “I was very happy to drive in front of my home crowd. It was really special to be driving a Formula One car on a nice, sunny day at Silverstone. I’ve been coming here to see the British Grand Prix since I was about three, so to drive an F1 car here on a Grand Prix weekend is pretty incredible.”

Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham Trinity’s Rob Whittick described the opening of the new clubhouse as: “A very proud day for our friendly club”. This sentiment was roundly applauded by the large crowd at the opening ceremony performed by Sky Cricket’s Charles Colvile and former Sussex and England’s Matt Prior. The commentator recounted how Trinity’s 1st XI captain, fireman Andy Petch had doused a blaze at his home following which an invitation was accepted to visit the club with the MCC CEO, when it was felt that: “Your old pavilion was letting

Saturday July 4 - Sussex Premier League Middleton v Roffey Middleton 174 all out (56 overs) Roffey 178-5 (36 overs) Roffey won by 5 wickets Roffey overwhelmed league newcomers Middleton, triumphing with 18 overs unused. Winning the toss Roffey inserted

the hosts, whose 75 run opening stand threatened a stiffer target, but once the prolific Sean Heather and Beck Hemingway were out insufficient further resistance was encountered. Ben Manenti and Dan Smith each took four wickets, Dan again polishing off the tail. Then, 56 from Theo Rivers and an unbeaten 76 from Mike Norris quickly put the result beyond doubt. Captain Josh Fleming told us: “We stuck to it with the ball and bowled them out cheaply after they’d got off to a good start. Then Theo & Noz (Norris) batted really well. Although we won easily enough it was slightly disappointing that we lost wickets

needlessly and didn’t knock off the runs with just one or two down!” Tomorrow (Saturday June 11) Roffey, still third by one point but with a game in hand, visit league leaders Preston Nomads (with seven wins from nine starts – same as Roffey), against whom they have a good track record despite losing narrowly to them at home earlier in the season. On Sunday in the England & Wales Cricket Board National Club Championship Roffey, through to the last 16, host Havant, the team they eliminated last year. A superb all round performance from Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi piloted Billingshurst to an excellent win – their third victory from four home games. Although Danny’s unbeaten 154 - from 140 balls, including 16 fours and 7 huge sixes - and two wickets - was the outstanding performance, this memorable team victory contained several other telling contributions. Batting first ‘Hurst were soon a wicket down but Stuart Barber (68) and Danny’s partnership was worth 150, followed by another of 89, Tom Nightingale making 53, before Hurst declared on 299-4, allowing themselves four extra overs to bowl out Cuckfield. At 74-1 the visitors had started well, with wickets hard to come by

Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi gave another superb all-round performance but Hurst kept plugging away. Yet at 149-4 in the 34th over the game seemed to be in stalemate with Cuckfield still not half way towards their target and Hurst needing six more wickets on a good batting surface – until captain Ben Williams (474) promptly grabbed two dismissals. Cuckfield had drawn four of their nine previous games, but instead of shutting up shop they kept going for their shots, even when they had no realistic chance. Andy Barr, 3-43, cut through the tail before Danny (2-23) made the final breakthrough with 28

balls remaining. Ben Williams said: “Great wicket, great batting, great wins – another good home performance!” Danny added: “I’ve been scoring plenty of runs for Horsham Thursday XI but it was good to get my first Premier League hundred!” The 30 point win moves Hurst up two places to eighth and tomorrow (Saturday June 11) they host current second placed East Grinstead. Roffey tortured by a one run defeat Sunday July 5 – Gray-Nicholls T20 Cup Quarter Final Roffey v East Grinstead East Grinstead 164-6 (20 0vers) Roffey 163-9 (20 0vers) East Grinstead won by 1 run Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter Cricket cruelty was inflicted on Roffey when they were defeated by the smallest possible margin. Preferring to chase, Roffey inserted East Grinstead and were pleased

to be chasing 165 after the visitors had been 124-2. Sussex’s Fynn Hudson-Prentice top scored with 58 while Carl Cachopa made a speedy 38 as Rohit Jagota and Dan Smith each took two wickets and Leigh Harrison and Alex Collins bagged one apiece. In reply Roffey lost an opener before a run was scored and trouble escalated as they slid to 29-4 before recovering to 110-5, courtesy of 38 from Theo Rivers and a typically quick-fire 51 from Matt Davies. Ollie Rivers and Dan Smith subsequently made useful contributions but cru-

cial wickets from former first class cricketer Ian Sturmer (3-35) denied Roffey victory. Roffey stalwart Peter Cheesman told the District Post: “The loss of early wickets made life difficult for us but Matt Davies and the middle order got us back in the game with some rapid scoring but then more wickets went down and we lost momentum, just preventing us from getting home.” Scorecard link – http://sussexcl.play-cricket.com/website/results/2584091

Henry Hankin from Creative Assembly said: ‘We were delighted to invite SprungDigi to come and help shape our GameJam and test the different games we made over the weekend. It was a perfect tribute to our much missed colleague.’ The winning game RELIX featured things that were important to SprungDigi- getting around, feeling lost and found, easy to play, putting learning disabled people centre stage.
