A shop based at a former gaoler’s house in Horsham is helping supply refugees living in a camp across the Channel. The plight of the thousands travelling across Europe so touched bosses at Crates Local independent food store that it has agreed to provide a cellar to store much-needed supplies for the families at Calais. People can drop off food and clothing supplies anytime between 7.30am and 6pm from Monday to Saturday at the store in the town’s busy Carfax. The organisation CalAid will arrange for the donations to get to Calais, where refugees are living in basic conditions. PJ Aldred, who runs Crates Local, told the Post as she awaited the first donations: “We have got a cellar spare, as you might imagine at the former home of a gaoler. Some of the scenes on television have really driven home to me

the plight of the refugees. You feel a little helpless. We are not doing a lot really, just acting as a depot and CalAid is doing most of the work. “The least we can do is to provide a place where people can bring along their donations. “We were approached by Ruth Newman, one of our customers, and we just said yes straight away. It just seemed the right thing to do.” Ruth said: “”We are told that they are still short of many essential items at Calais, and we are grateful for the generous offer by Crates Local to act as a storage depot.” She also stated that the specific requirements at the moment were tinned food, tin openers, unperishable foods (not pasta), tents, sleeping bags, solar lights, sports equipment (footballs, swing ball etc)playing cards BBQ's and men's trainers. Items other than food can be either good quality used or new. The Crates Local premises date to the 1500s when Nicholas Lintott lived there while earning a living as the community’s jailer and for many years it was used by an optician.

Families help kids with mental health issues Two families will unite for a concert tomorrow evening that will help children and young people with mental health problems. Members of the Hansell and Ellis families will perform as the Hansellis Ensemble on Saturday at 7.30pm in Holy Trinity Church, Rudgwick. The show will include some of their favourite music to raise funds for the children and young people’s mental health charity YoungMinds. The ensemble will be playing music for strings, voices and harpsichord by Purcell, Schütz and Monteverdi, three of the great composers from the 17th century. Professional musicians David Hansell on harpsichord, Jenny Hansell soprano, and Rachel Ellis on violin will be joined by violinist Katy Ellis, Charlotte Ellis on cello and Harriet Hansell, soprano and violin. Jenny Hansell said: “YoungMinds is a very important charity. We would like to help those who are silently suffering by raising aware-

ness of the problems that are affecting increasingly more children and young people. We all know of young people who have been affected in some way or other and there are many more whose problems go unnoticed and don’t receive the h e l p they need. We are fortunate that we can help the charity by doing something we all love, making music’’. The concert is free but the families say donations to Youngminds would be really appreciated. People who cannot get to the concert may donate at www.justgiv-

Tribute paid to teacher killed in New school’s official lighting strike as inquest is held opening this Saturday A school paid tribute this week to a teacher killed by lightning, after details of his death were heard at an inquest. Robin Meakings, 59, from Pulborough, who taught at Forest School, Horsham died soon after being struck by a bolt of lightning while walking at Cribyn Peak near Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons in July. A mountain rescue team tried to revive him before he was flown by RAF helicopter to hospital, where he was declared to be dead. His name was not made public at the time, but a tribute has now been paid as staff and pupils return to school. Head teacher at Forest School Siobhan Denning said: “Everyone here at Forest was devastated to lose a loved and valued colleague in such a tragic way. He had been with us for almost three years and had quickly established himself as a valued member of staff. “After an initial career in the army as an engineer and instructor, Robin retrained as a teacher. He retired from his job as a Design and Technology teacher in another school several years ago and joined us as a Study Supervisor and tutor.

“Since he started with us he has taken on many roles within the school, most recently taking charge of our Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Robin was due to lead

our current D of E cohort on their expedition the weekend following his sudden death. He had worked particularly closely with many of these

boys, who felt his loss deeply. “He was an avid football fan, and a lifelong supporter of Fulham FC. Woe betide the member of staff who made the mistake of taking his Fulham mug from the staff room! “To quote Chaucer, Robin “was a veray parfit gentil knight.' “Firm with pupils when he needed to be, he was also caring and understanding and rarely had to raise his voice. He was respected by pupils and staff alike and is deeply missed.” Cliff Purvis, Chair of Governors at the school, was one of the many colleagues who attended Robin’s funeral in the summer holidays. “Although I did not know Robin personally, I was touched by the high regard in which many of his fellow colleagues held him. He was clearly someone who people warmed to on first meeting and whose kind and supportive personality drew people to him.” Robin leaves behind a partner of long-standing and two grown-up children. The school added: “He loved walking and we console ourselves here with the thought that he was doing what he enjoyed most.”

Teens urged to have new vaccination Teenagers are being invited to have a new vaccination to protect them from life-threatening illness. And students are being particularly encouraged to have the vaccination before starting university. Local family doctors are now inviting youngsters aged 17 and 18 in West and East Sussex and Surrey and Sussex to take-up a new vaccine which offers them protection against meningitis, or inflammation of the brain, and septicaemia, or blood poisoning. NHS England says it is welcoming the start of the new Meningitis ACWY vaccination programme which protects against these diseases which are caused by four meningococcal strains including Meningitis W. There were four cases and one death caused by Meningitis W in Surrey and Sussex in 2014. All teenagers in England born between September 1 1996 and August 31 1997 are eligible for this vaccination and they are now being invited by their local GP to take-up the vaccine as soon as possible. Emily Pearce, 18 years, from Seaford, had the vaccination and is encouraging her friends to also have theirs. She said: “I had heard of meningitis before but didn’t realise older teenagers like me were at risk. My mum encouraged me to book an appointment. “When I had my Meningitis ACWY vaccination at my GP surgery I was surprised how quick and painless it was.” Experts say it is important that anyone who plans to go to university this year gets vaccinated before they leave. This group are at increased risk of getting meningococcal disease, as many of them will be mixing closely with lots of new people at university, some of whom may unknowingly carry the meningococcal bacteria. The vaccine is being introduced in

response to a rapidly growing increase in cases of a highly aggressive strain of meningococcal disease, group W.

Cases of Meningitis W have been increasing year-on-year, from 22 cases in 2009 to 117 in 2014.

Pupils will have new school after the summer break as Barns Green Primary School stages its official opening ceremony on Saturday. The creation of the school is the result of a collaboration between the local parish council, the school governors, West Sussex County Council and property developer Berkeley Homes. A tape will be cut at 11am and herald hours of activity. Berkeley Homes has built spacious, light, airy classrooms to optimise the learning potential for up to 150 students. Other key features include a new fully integrated high-speed broadband connection, dedicated food technology and music rooms and a spacious hall has a high-tech lighting rig and sound system for performances and enables the full PE curriculum to be taught indoors. Local dignitaries will be joined by the school’s headmaster, Simon Simmons, representatives from Berkeley Homes and the local com-

munity to celebrate the opening with a ribbon cutting, speeches, and school tours. There will also be a traditional fete including the children performing in song and dance, BBQ and hog roast, cream teas, pony rides, tug-of-war, craft tent, fire service, tank, assault course, bouncy castle, more than 15 stalls, a beer and refreshment tent, all accompanied by the music of a local jazz band. Local dignitaries attending include Horsham MP Jeremy Quin, Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, and Tricia Youtan, leader of Horsham District Council. The school replaces the old Itchingfield Primary, which served the Barns Green and Itchingfield area for more than 160 years and had eight head teachers. A special event was held in June to commemorate the closure, but the staff and pupils are now looking to the future at Barns Green.

Talent challenge for West Grants available to help fight crime Sussex youngsters in 2016 Youngsters from West Sussex are invited to take their talents to the 2016 Rock Challenge. Their senior schools academies and sixth form colleges may sign up from September 22 to take part. Two local heats will be held on March 3 and 4 at The Hawth for schools across both West and East Sussex to get involved. Organisers of the Rock Challenge events say they aim to inspire, engage and motivate young people to make healthy and positive lifestyle choices. Each show provides the opportunity for young people to experience an adrenalin-based high through performing live on a professional stage rather than using tobacco, alcohol or other drugs. They are organised by the Be Your Best Foundation, a registered charity since April 1998 (registered charity number 1077291), facilitate the production and expansion of the Rock Challenge® and J Rock™ in the UK. Teams as small as 20 or as large as 135 students, can collaborate with teachers, parents and wider communities to prepare an eight minute performance. These preparations are undertaken

over many weeks and months and showcase an array of skills in dance, drama and design. Set to a theme of their choice each school’s performance is completely original and can vary from tackling a political or social message, retelling a true event or an entirely imaginative concept. More information about the event can be seen in a promotional video at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=z54kjiEi8aQ This year twenty one Sussex schools were successfully involved in The Rock Challenge® and two local primary school also competed in the junior division J Rock™. Four of the Sussex schools were also extremely successful qualifying through to the regional finals, and Durrington High School, Worthing was also placed fourth at the Rock Challenge® National Final. Schools may contact the Rock Challenge® and J Rock™ office on 02392 985710. Due to popular demand entries are on a first come first served basis and entry forms will be available on September 22 from 6am on the website: www.rockchallenge.co.uk Local sponsors are also being sought and can call 02392 985 716.

Volunteers helping to fight crime and support its victims may now apply for grants of up to £40,000 for their organisations. Their applications are now being accepted for consideration for a payment from the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner’s “Safer in Sussex Funding”. It includes an enhanced funding pot that will allow some voluntary organisations to apply for grants up to £40,000. The previous funding round in May and June saw 16 local organisations that help victims of crime and improve community safety receive funding totalling almost £95,000. The grant award scheme, established by the commissioner Katy Bourne, is made up of two funds. The Victims’ Services Fund gives financial support to voluntary and third-sector organisations in Sussex that help individuals to cope and recover from the impact of crime. These grant awards are available up to £10,000. The enhanced £40,000 grant is for those organisations in the Voluntary Community Social Enterprise sector that are well-established, long running and have already demonstrated their value, need and support for victims of crime. The Community Safety Fund – gives grants up to £5,000 to local organisations and projects that aim to reduce crime and improve community safety.

Katy Bourne said: "I am delighted that interest in my Safer in Sussex Funding is resulting in such a high calibre of applications being received. “In the last round of funding over 70% of applications were awarded grants to help create services that would otherwise not exist in Sussex. “This reflects the sheer number of organisations and community groups who are committed to providing an enhanced service to victims of crime and to keeping Sussex safe. "I look forward to continuing to visit these organisations and following the progress of their projects over

the coming months.” Applications for Safer in Sussex Funding must demonstrate support for the priorities set out in the Commissioner’s Police & Crime Plan. These include helping victims who have suffered from crimes such as child sexual exploitation, domestic abuse and stalking as well as addressing community safety priorities such as homelessness and anti-social behaviour. The current application window closes on October 2. For further information visit: http://www.sussexpcc.gov.uk/apply-for-funding/

Simon goes from sloth Tragedy as two women die in falls to super to help others Inquests could reveal why two women died in separate falls. The two women, one from Horsham, were killed in different but tragic circumstances. Police are investigating the final moments of the victims to prepare reports on both incidents for West Sussex Coroner Penelope Schofield for inquests to be arranged when the investigations are complete. Meanwhile, Sussex Police are still seeking witnesses to the fatal collision involving the death of one of the women, the aftermath of which blocked the M23 motorway southbound near Crawley for more than four hours. A woman died when she fell from a bridge above the M23 at Maidenbower and was subsequently struck by traffic on the road below. The incident happened at about

From confessed sloth into super runner for charity is Simon Perry’s transformation in a year. It all came about because of his concern for people who every day of the lives cannot depend on having something as basic as a clean water supply. Horsham resident and father of one, Simon, who trains locally in Horsham Park, has challenged himself to run 1,000km over the course of one year , raise at least £1,000 and increase awareness for the water aid charity Just a Drop. Already half way through his endeavour, Simon has committed himself to many running events and is not averse to doing some of them in style. For example for his first event, the Brighton Chicken Run, he dressed as a chicken. He has also taken part in the British London 10km and he plans to tackle the Great North Run next month. Simon said: “This time last year I was a typical sloth like 30-something who could not run for a bus if I tried. For

many reasons, some personal and some not, this changed. I dug out my running shoes and hit the road in the aid of Just a Drop.” The idea of running such a distance in aid of Just a Drop came about whilst working in an environmental consultancy. Simon decided that water sanitation was a crucial problem facing many areas today. He wrote on his blog, “Clean fresh water is a basic necessity which we all take for granted. However, millions of people around the world have to survive without easy access to clean water or basic sanitation.” Nicola Swann, fundraising and communications manager at Just a Drop says, “He has already run 500km and raised nearly a quarter of his target which will ensure that the lives of many children and their families will be significantly changed for the better through the provision of clean, safe water. 8.35pm on Thursday of last week close to the motorway's junction 10A. The victim, believed to be from Crawley, fell onto the southbound carriageway beneath the Turners Hill Road flyover. She was later pronounced dead at the scene. The West Sussex Coroner Penelope Schofield has been informed of the tragedy. Drivers were delayed when traffic on the M23 and surrounding roads was severely disrupted by the incident and by police investigations at the scene. The southbound carriageway of the motorway did not re-open until 1am. Anyone who saw what happened or who may have other information is asked to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or phone 101, quoting Operation Barnston. Another woman died soon after being serious injured in a fall in Horsham.

The 47-year-old was reported as tumbling from a small balcony at the four-storey Bishopric Court flats in The Bishopric, Horsham. 999 services were called and paramedics treated her on the spot before she was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Eastern Road, Brighton with serious injuries. It is thought the woman fell about 30ft in the incident just before 1.45pm on August 26. She died in hospital from her severe injuries on August 30. Sussex Police confirmed to the Post that the incident, which happened just before 1.45 pm on August 26, was not being treated by them as suspicious, which means no-one else is thought to be directly involved her death. The names of the two women who died had not been released by the police at the time the Post went to press.

ueen’s marathon reign

Two memorable visits to Horsham by the Queen were among hundreds she has made during her recordbreaking reign of 63 years. The Queen became our longestreigning monarch on Wednesday, surpassing that of Queen Victoria. At Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School in Comptons Lane, Horsham there are pictures still proudly displayed of the Queen opening the school on March 10 1978, in the company of the Duke of Edinburgh. During her visit to West Sussex on that day the Queen also visited Forest Boys School. The Queen gave the school a personally signed portrait of herself which it still has. Thousands of people turned out to catch a glimpse of the Queen and youngsters were given the day off school. It was another 25 years into her reign before the Queen visited the town again, on October 24 2003. At the time the town had undergone something of a minor transformation with development. During her visit the Queen toured the newly improved Blackhorse Way before unveiling a sundial to mark its official opening. The ceremony and unveiling of a bronze sundial made by Lorne McKean and Edwin Russell, marked the conclusion of the town's 25 year redevelopment programme that had started when she last visited in 1978. The Queen then called on the town’s Capitol arts centre, which had just undergone £6million worth of

refurbishment. After watching a musical performance the Queen unveiled a plaque to mark her visit. Cllr Vivien Lyth, then chairman of Horsham District Council, said of the day: "This is a great honour for our district and sets the seal on a 25-year programme of change and improvement led by Horsham District Council. "We should all be very proud of the recognition that this Royal visit will bring to our district." In the morning before going to the town centre the Queen had visited Christ's Hospital boarding school, which was celebrating 450 years since Edward VI granted its Royal Charter to mark its charitable work. The Queen, who was visiting as the school's Patron, joined the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duchess of Gloucester and the Duke of Gloucester, President of the school, to chat with students , staff and parents before attending a commemoration service to mark 450 years of Royal patronage. Before leaving the Queen unveiled a commemoration stone before taking lunch in the dining hall with 300 guests. The college’s original foundation stone was laid by the Prince of Wales, The Queen's great grandfather, in 1897. The Head Master at the time, Dr Peter Southern, said:“It was a great honour for Christ’s Hospital to receive The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh and The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. The pupils, staff

and Trustees much enjoyed welcoming them and providing a glimpse of the very special opportunities given to children from all walks of life at Christ’s Hospital.” Jackie Hughes, who taught at Queen Elizabeth II School, told the Post: “I remember the day so clearly when the Queen came to officially open our school. The air of anticipation and excitement was palpable with every student and adult on standby until we heard the words ‘she’s here!’. What a wonderful lady, who stopped and chatted in every room. The abiding memory is of a very petite and gracious lady who definitely had an incredible aura and presence as she moved about the school.” Other visits to West Sussex by the Queen include the opening of Gatwick’s North terminal in March 1988, King Edward VII Hospital at Midhurst in 1991, and The South of England Show at Ardingly in 1991. In earlier times she visited King Edward VII Hospital at Midhurst in 1956 and re-opened Gatwick Airport after its £8 million refit in 1958, also visiting Crawley. Among the pictures is one of The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh greeting Colonel Sir Brian Barttelot, OBE DL at Christ's Hospital as former Lord-Lieutenant, Mr Hugh Wyatt, CVO, looks on. Pictured are some of the scenes from the historic visit. Our thanks to the schools for supplying the pictures from their archives.

Pirates break record for hospice care Rugby World Cup brings boost for Horsham fans

Pirates broke a record as motley crews raced across a lake to help raise money for people with terminal illness from Horsham, Crawley and nearby areas. They tackled the water at Tilgate Lake, Crawley, on Sunday as part of St Catherine's Hospice annual Dragon Boat Festival. With a winning time of 01.02.22, Virgin Active set the fastest race time ever seen in thirteen years of the festival. Sunshine and free pirate themed entertainment drew huge crowds to cheer on 32 corporate teams as they raced in 40ft Dragon Boats. Jayne James, Team Captain for Sussex Community NHS Trust, said: "It was our first year taking part in St Catherine's Dragon Boats Festival. Some of us have had people cared for by St Catherine's so we

wanted to raise money for the hospice and have a laugh." With team spirit in abundance and adrenaline pumping, teams

Sunshine and free pirate themed entertainment drew huge crowds to cheer on 32 corporate teams as they raced in 40ft Dragon Boats battled it out in a series of competitive races. Coming in second was CGG and taking third place was Smith and Western. The winning teams were

presented with well deserved medals by Crawley Mayor, Chris Cheshire, St Catherine's Chief Executive, Giles Tomsett and the Chair of Trustees from St Catherine’s, Simon Turpitt. Back on dry land, traditional stalls including: a tombola, Knock Polly off her Perch and a plant and cake stall attracted queues throughout the day. A caricaturist also proved popular with families taking the chance to grab a unique memento of their day. Face-painting, a pirate obstacle course and smoothie bikes also added to the fun and Captain Jack Sparrow caused a stir as he mingled among the crowds. Fundraising events such as Dragon Boat help St Catherine's to continue to provide vital care for terminally ill people, and their friends and family, across Sussex and Surrey.

Sports fans in Horsham have better facilities thanks to the 2015 rugby World Cup. Horsham Rugby Club in Hammerpond Road has completed its bar and internal renovation to make it more welcoming in time for the global competition being held this month and October. The £10,000 cost was covered by cash from the Rugby Football Union’s “Transforming Social Spaces Grants” which aims to get local rugby clubs “Fit for 15”. The club says the grant will enhance social facilities and provide a resource to be used by the local community and hopefully encourage non-rugby playing people to visit the club to watch games during the Rugby World Cup. Commercial manager Richard Ordidge said: “We are delighted that our project has been chosen as a recipient for a Transforming Social Spaces Grant. “This has helped us improve our facilities, making our social spaces more comfortable and appealing for our members and the local people

from Horsham as a venue for hire. “The 2015 World Cup will inspire a new wave of people of all ages to become involved in rugby and this RFU investment will help our club to be even better equipped to welcome newcomers.” Horsham MP Jeremy Quin attended a social event for sponsors and club officials and said: “This investment by the RFU is excellent news. “Horsham Rugby Club has an enthusiastic group of hardworking volunteers and this funding will enable them to do even more for young people in the community in future.” The club is still fundraising hard to build new changing rooms and is looking for businesses or private sponsors to support the project. Those interested can contact Commercial Manager Richard Ordidge on 01403 262231. The club completed a double success last season when its first team was promoted to the London South East Division 2, and its second team won promotion to Sussex Division 1.

Martin Pratt says: “Our dedicated team pride themselves on producing everything you need to give that extra special lift to your activities – business and personal. Hepworth Brewery finds a new home Work is well underway on Hepworth’s new brewery Looking at the very, very large and very muddy building site now sitting beside the A29, just south of Adversane, it is hard to accept that in seven months, this, admittedly very neat, scene of devastation, will be brewing, conditioning, bottling and kegging three times as much glorious Sussex beer as is currently possible on the current site in Horsham's Railway Yard. "We had been looking for a possible site for several years," says Andy Hepworth. "But land is at a premium in the South East. Building land is even more difficult to find - and afford! But, Brinsbury College have a master plan to develop their land along the lines of Agricultural Ex-

cellence and we fit the specifications - our business is totally dependent on agricultural produce, most of which is grown in Sussex. So, we agreed with them quite rapidly, spent two more years with HDC Planning department and now the Contractors have moved in!" Hepworths are grateful for grants from Be the Business and Coast to Capitol which have certainly eased the progress of the enterprise. "Without them" says Andy, " We would have had real difficulty, given the unfortunate planning delays" The new brewery will be as green as can be: bore-hole water; reed-bed drainage; water recovery schemes; solar power. "Brewing is a pretty green industry in any case,

BREAKING NEWS CLINICALLY PROVEN TO HELP REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF TINNUTUS

when brewing is traditional" says Andy," We are simply using the land to turn produce into a form we enjoy in a glass - and remember that beer is a foodstuff, too." The New Brewery will be fully operational by April 2016, but there will be no interruption of supplies during the transfer. "We couldn't go without our own beer!" Andy smiles, mock horrified. "We've already planned out a constant supply!" More beer equals more jobs; "We have an excellent team and they'll help newcomers in-house, but there will also be new posts for the Shop and the Visitor centre" It's all very exciting" So, Horsham's brewing Heritage is set for great things - Cheers!

Why has Chiropractic become so popular? This healing art, science and philosophy founded over a century ago, is now the largest natural health care profession in the world. Whilst most of us know it’s well documented Chiropractic can help headaches, neck pain and low back pain, it is less well known and not yet documented in the same scientific fashion that many people through the years are convinced it has helped conditions such as ear infections, asthma, colic, bed wetting, hearing problems, digestive and menstrual problems and even infertility. Stephanie Ling, an enthusiastic Chiropractic patient at Horsham’s award winning BritChiro Clinics shares her experience: “I first went to BritChiro because I was suffering with headaches and neck and shoulder pain. After quite some time of feeling uncomfortable, my boyfriend,

who has been going to BritChiro for many years, finally persuaded me to try them. I have been going regularly ever since. The adjustments are never painful - I actually look forward to them because it means I will feel better afterwards! I hardly ever get headaches anymore, and my shoulder pain comes back only when I’m stressed. But I know when it does I can quickly get myself set right again. Since going I feel in such good health generally - I hardly ever get bugs and colds, and my chiropractor is more my GP than my actual GP! Everyone is always friendly and helpful, and I never struggle to get an appointment. I would, and do, recommend them to everyone. My boyfriend’s sister took her new born baby for a check up on our recommendation.” Sounds too good to be true? We asked Clinical Director Peter Westergaard, Founder of the award winning Chiropractic Clinic group, BritChiro Clinics to explain this amazing form of treatment. “The reason Stephanie feels in such good health generally following her Chiropractic treatment is because when nerves are no longer pinched they are better able to send life’s messages. When nerves are no longer pinched, your brain and internal organs are likely to begin to function more efficiently and the healing process may begin on many levels. Many patients report that they feel more relaxed, more peaceful and aware that the old tensions or stress they’ve been carrying for many years begin to dissolve. Whilst generally it is a gradual step by step process, many report an immediate change in symptoms – less or no pain, better movement, more upright posture and more energy.

Local company, SouthDowns Health and Fitness, have been providing an elite personal training service from Chanctonbury Sport and Leisure, for the last four years. The company has expanded from the initial partnership, of Liam Mitch-

ell and Alex Ryan, to a team of five and is now in the exciting position of being able to open it’s first private facility in the heart of Storrington. Liam Mitchell, the company’s coowner and head trainer, will be taking the reigns of the facility which

will offer a host of services, including Personal Training, Osteopathy, Health Foods and Sports Massage. From the beginning, the company’s goal was to have a group of health professionals, operating under the same roof, with similar philosophies: “We have managed to achieve this with the new facility, not only do we have a top team of personal trainers, we are now also able to work closely with local Osteopath, Nicholas Coysh”. In addition to this, Michelle Green will be offering sports massage from the new facility. To book an appointment, please email: info@southdownsfitness.co.uk. Alongside this exciting new project, Liam is currently studying for a Masters Degree, in Strength and Conditioning, at St Mary’s University, one the leading universities in developing Sports Science. He has experience working with recreational and elite athletes and will also be furthering his knowledge by working at the English Institute of Sport, later in the year. Liam and Alex take pride in the company’s evidence-based approach to training and feels it is something that needs to be addressed across the industry. Gone are the days of ‘no pain, no gain’. The company's approach, is based on the demands of the individual’s needs and lifestyle, using proven methods that get results: "We take the same approach for someone who wants to lose some weight and get more done in the garden as for someone who is

preparing for a professional rugby season. We undertake a thorough needs analysis of the individual and plan the training to maximise adaption and get results.” Client, Mark Davies (Team GB Triathlete, sub 3-hour marathon and sub 10-hour Ironman) comments: “Working with Liam has helped me improve my performance significantly over the last 3 years. I have been able to achieve my goals thanks to Liam’s knowledge and coaching and I am now at a point where we are working towards qualification for the 2016 Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.” Local athlete, Flora Bertwhislte (16) has also been working with Liam for the last 2 years. Flora’s hard work has paid off, as she recently received her first call up to the Sussex Ladies 1st team. To top it off, she is hopeful of making the England Team, for the 2016 season: “The training with Liam has really helped my progression over the last few years and I’ve learnt a lot in the process”. The SouthDowns Health & Fitness Performance Centre will be opening in September and welcomes you to the open evening on September 9, at 7pm, to view the new facility and health food store. Vintage Rose Café will be providing drinks, and a welcoming environment, to met the team and ask any questions about what the centre can offer. Benjamin Folke Thomas at Crawley

Alternative-country star Benjamin Folke Thomas and his band, return to The Hawth Thursday, 1 October 7.45pm. Benjamin appeared solo, at Crawley Folk and Real Ale Festival,

in late June and now returns, with his band. Their autumn tour follows the success of their Summer festival appearances and Spring tour, which saw the release of their latest album 'Rogue State Of Mind'.

An electrifying performer, Ben possesses a characterful and resonant vocal style, which is complemented by highly accomplished finger-style guitar. He is also an inspired and mature songwriter, with influences including Warren Zevon, Leonard Cohen and early Dylan. His songs are marked by sensitivity and originality. Ben has gathered around him three brilliant musicians, each complementing the others, and creating an exciting show, that is simply not to be missed. Although now based in his native Sweden, Ben is no stranger to England. He lived in London for many years and built a substantial following, playing venues large and small, throughout the UK, as well as festival appearances at Glastonbury, Green Man, Larmer Tree and Cropredy among others. Ben is lucky to count legendary radio presenter, Bob Harris, amongst his fans. Last year, he travelled to Nashville, with Bob, as part of a BBC Introducing initiative. Harris commented: "Ben can really hold an audience, so catch his show if you can and enjoy his instrumental virtuosity, sophisticated songwriting, and passionate vocals.” Tickets: £13 (£16 on the door). THE BILLY JOEL SONGBOOK PERFORMED BY ELIO PACE AND HIS BAND Saturday 12 September, 7.30pm Following his highly-acclaimed New York and Philadelphia Billy Joel ‘Original Touring Band’ concerts, Elio Pace delivers this sensational, electrifying tour celebrating the phenomenal music of Billy Joel. Featuring the massive hits Uptown Girl, Just The Way You Are and My Life.

WISDOM OF A FOOL ***World Premiere*** Thu 17 - Sat 19 September, 7.30pm (Sat Mat 2.30pm)

In this moving and funny one-man play, Jack Lane takes you behind Norman Wisdom’s well-known cheeky character to reveal a tough and lonely childhood that would spur him on to a better life. Success on the silver screen including the hit song ‘Don’t Laugh at Me’ seals his fame. But fame comes at a price… The ‘gump suit’ that Jack wears is one Norman actually owned and wore for his own stage performances.

THE MANFREDS: HITS, JAZZ AND BLUES Friday 25 September, 7.30pm The 60s group Manfred Mann is now considered, more than ever, one of the finest and most respected bands from that era. These musicians will provide a full evening’s entertainment with a few ‘surprise’ renditions of their work, not only with The Manfreds, but with their individual connections. A brand new show, containing all new tales from the travels of two of the world’s best-loved broadcasters, starts its UK tour next month. Blowers and Backers are back with Rogues on the Road - a brand new show, crammed full of even more wonderful (and occasionally outrageous) reminiscences and anecdotes, from two extensive careers spent broadcasting around the globe in search of sporting excellence. Bastions of the beloved Test Match Special, with over 80 years in the commentary box and touring the world between them, Henry and Peter certainly have some tales to tell. The fun, the games and outlandish characters – from Ian Fleming to Noel Coward – spread well beyond

the confines of any cricket ground or studio. 2015 sees a completely fresh set of hilarious stories, after three years of playing to packed houses across the UK, including two successful seasons at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, earning rave reviews and captivating audiences of all ages. Henry ‘My Dear Old Thing’ Blofeld is one of Britain’s most loved and recognisable broadcasters and, in 2014, also appeared on ITV’s The Chase and BBC’s Room 101. He continues to delight an army of TMS fans. Peter Baxter was in charge of Test Match Special for 34 years - a schoolmaster trying to keep some very errant students in line. Between them they’ve seen plenty

of shenanigans, across the years and across the globe, so come ready to be shocked and entertained by good men behaving badly. Tickets for October 23 available by contacting The Capitol Horsham, via Box Office: 01403 750 220 or Online: www.tickets.thecapitolhorsham. com “A show that is not so much about cricket as about what happens in the commentary box and beyond”

Tuk-tuk deliveries for award-winning restaurant

Customers of an award-winning restaurant might soon be getting home orders delivered by a tuktuk. Giggling Squid Thai Restaurant in Horsham picked up the prestigious award for ‘International Food Festival Experience’ at Horsham’s ‘Big Nibble’ festival. Giggling Squid’s tuk-tuk, more normally seen on the bustling streets of Bangkok, provided highly popular photo opportunities for

many selfie hunters. The restaurant says the tuk-tuk had been imported from Thailand with a view to introducing home deliveries for Giggling Squid customers. Focused around Horsham’s ‘Carfax’ open square at the town centre, Horsham Council, Horsham Markets and Food Rocks company organised a showcase of local produce and street foods. Record crowds encouraged by sunshine meant that several stalls

sold out of stock well before the day’s end. Giggling Squid, whose head office is soon to be based in Horsham, won the Horsham Chairman’s award for producing the best ‘International Food Festival Experience’ with “loads of exciting food samples, amazing demonstrations of the art of vegetable carving.” Horsham’s District Council chairman Tricia Youtan said: “Giggling Squid completely deserved

my winner’s award for the best experience. “They had obviously put a huge amount of thought into not just showing off their food but the culture and skills of their country’s cuisine as well.” Pranee Laurillard, who co owns the family of Giggling Squid restaurants with husband, Andy said: “This award means so much to the every one at Giggling Squid given the high quality of local competi-

tion.” the two-day event included a live cookery theatre which say all three of Sussex’s Michelin starred chefs demonstrate their culinary skills and share trade secrets, with a supporting a cast of top local chefs and local artisan producers. The Horsham beer and cider trail attracted record numbers of ‘trailers’ with eight bars, shops and stalls providing a quality sup in the specially produced souvenir mugs.

Gardening

CORNER

Friday 11 September 2015

September Gardening It suddenly feels like autumn. What with the rather uninspiring summer, we’re still holding out for a last minute heat wave, but it’s not looking promising. Never mind, whatever the weather there are still jobs to do in the garden and while there isn’t as much to do in the ornamental garden at this time of year, if you have a fruit or vegetable patch, now is the time to reap the rewards of harvest. If your garden is in need of an overhaul, now is also a really good time to start thinking about a new design to implement in the spring. The design team offer a free consultation, so pop in and see us or give us a call, as we would love to hear more about your outside space.

It is also the time to start planting your spring-flowering bulbs before the first frost. Senior Designer Daniel Barber recently designed a garden, which incorporates 40,000 spring flowering bulbs – he shares his invaluable advice on the following page.

Keep your plants flourishing with our Multipurpose Compost.

Jack Dunckley’s

top five tips for September gardening: Divide herbaceous perennials (plants whose growth dies down annually but roots survive) to ensure healthy, vigorous plants that will continue to perform year after year. Collect and sow seed from perennials and hardy annuals. Plant spring flowering bulbs before the first frost. Put a net over your pond to prevent autumn leaves falling in. Don’t forget to water new plants, using rainwater where possible.

Don’t kill our bees!

Suitable for all round use. Available now at Birchfield Nursery 3 x 50 litre bags for only £12.00

There is a petition on the UK Government and Parliament Petition website at the moment to immediately halt the use of Neonicotinoids on crops, which kill our bees. Neonicotinoids are pesticides in agricultural use that control pests such as aphids and grubs. The poison gets into the pollen and renders it deadly to bees and other pollinators. Neonicotinoids are banned in several countries due to links with bee deaths. The petition needs 100,000 signatures for it to be considered for debate in Parliament and at last look there were just over 81,000 signatures. You have until January 2016 to sign: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/104796

Spring Flowering Bulbs at Birchfield

Plant of the Month

Skimmia japonica 'Rubella' A compact shrub with deep green elliptic leaves. Dark red flower buds are produced in autumn and last through winter until white fragrant flowers open in spring. This is a great shrub for growing in a pot or for filling in gaps in the garden border.

Daniel Barber, Senior Garden Designer at Jack Dunckley Landscape Design. (Pictured here with Jack at the landscape design studio based at Birchfield Nursery)

Skimmia japonica 'Rubella' are available to buy at Jack Dunckley’s Birchfield Nursery 3 Litre pot is £14.99.

I’ve just competed a landscape design for a garden in West Sussex, which involves planting 40,000 spring flowering bulbs. This is going to be a huge task, but will be worth it when spring comes and the brightly coloured displays of tulips, crocus, daffodils and hyacinths are out in full bloom, heralding the arrival of warmer weather. If you have a big space to fill with lots of bulbs, the easiest way to plant them is by excavating a trench. The trench needs to be three times the height of the bulb and ideally located in a warm, sunny spot with good drainage - this is important as most hardy bulbs come from areas with dry summer climates. Once the trench has been dug, fork over the soil for drainage and then distribute sand on top to create a natural drift for the bulbs to sit in. Place your chosen bulbs in the trench with the pointed growing tip facing upwards. A general rule for planting bulbs is that a smaller bulb will need a higher density per square metre than a larger bulb so, for example, you would need to plant a lot more crocuses in one area than you would, say, hyacinths – this is to ensure a significant show of colour come spring time. Smaller bulbs should also be planted nearer each other, so you can plant crocuses with about 5-10cm spacing, whereas narcissus can be planted with about 1015cm spacing. Once all your bulbs are in, cover them over with a mixture of top soil and compost. Depending on the look you want, finish with either bark mulch or grass on top. Many people prefer the look of bark mulch as it provides a neater, decorative finish once the bulbs have pushed through and flowered. It also helps to suppress weeds, deter some pests and protect plant roots form extreme temperatures. Not everyone likes the natural look of a grass finish, as you should really leave the grass for about six weeks after the bulbs have flowered before mowing. Inevitably, the grass grows wild alongside the bulbs.

Rudbeckia fulgida var. deamii Commonly know as ‘Deam's coneflower’, Rudbeckia is part of the Asteraceae family. It is an upright herbaceous perennial, which grows to 60cm and has oval, dark green, hairy leaves and bright yellow daisies. Rudbeckia flower from late summer to mid autumn and make a beautiful, colourful addition to any garden. Rudbeckia are available at Jack Dunckley Birchfield Nursery.

SEPT/OCT OFFER

You can use this method of trench planting for various sites, such as bordering a path or driveway. However, if you want to create a spring colour splash under a mature tree, I would advise you to plant them separately as large excavations can cause damage to tree roots and may encourage suckering. Keep an eye out for pests such as slugs, snails and squirrels (particularly with tulips and crocuses) and diseases such as daffodil viruses, narcissus basal rot, tulip fire and tulip viruses.

Planting Times: Plant daffodils, crocus and hyacinths by the end of September.

Rudbeckia

Plant tulips in November, before the first frost.

Deciding on Deciduous Trees Jack Dunckley, Owner of Jack Dunckley’s Birchfield Nursery. I have always thought there is something magical about deciduous trees in autumn, as their leaves change to beautiful hues and then eventually fall. Is there anywhere more striking than Sussex to see this transformation? I look forward to watching it over the next few weeks.

Plant Hire service for Weddings or Corporate Functions

Autumn is the best time to plant new deciduous trees in your garden as the soil is warm and there is adequate rainfall. They are also about to lose their leaves, so the growth is focused on supporting the roots and not the leaves. There are so many wonderful varieties to choose from, but here are three of my favourite to look out for in Sussex over the next few weeks:

Liquidambar styraciflua Commonly known as the American Sweetgum, this wonderful tree has to be in my top three. Its large, star-like, shiny, bright green leaves, turn brilliant purple, then shades of orange and yellow in the autumn. Its flowers are monoecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but both sexes can be found on the same plant) which flower discreetly in spring and are pollinated by Bees. American Sweetgum isn’t suitable for a small garden, as it will eventually grow to 25 metres. It is native to eastern North America and regions of Mexico and Central America, but you can find some really beautiful examples in Sussex, such as at Sheffield Park. Tip: Trees grown in rich, damp soil in full sun will colour the best. When planting, incorporate lots of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole and stake firmly. They require minimal pruning, but remove broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter.

The West Himalayan birch is a beautiful deciduous tree perfect for most gardens, large or small. The bark turns bright white as the tree matures which helps light up the garden in winter, or act as a beautiful contrast for the dark green leaves, which turn yellow in autumn. Can be grown as a specimen in the lawn, grown in a group in a woodland or just planted as a feature in the garden border. The brown catkins it produces in spring are also very attractive. It's a shallow rooting tree and prefers moist but well drained soil.

Transform a standard marquee or Reception area into an attractive setting. At Jack Dunckley's Birchfield Nursery we offer a Hire service on a range of top quality plants. We will also deliver and collect. All this at a fraction of the cost of purchasing planting.

Pizza Express is celebrating the launch of its exciting new look restaurant in Horsham. Located in East Street, this restaurant has been totally transformed and features artwork paying tribute to Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the major Romantic poets, who was born in Horsham. Each PizzaExpress restaurant is individually designed

– often using well known places, people or historical events from the area as the basis. The interior of the Horsham restaurant has a range of collage artworks inspired by Shelley’s poetry and his story. The artworks combine pieces of text and imagery that give a contemporary interpretation of his work.

The illustrious history of our Horsham store dates back to 1925, when Messrs. Scott & Sargeant opened their premises at 26 East Street. The business flourished and grew and allowed the shop to take over the adjoining property. In 2004, nearly 80 years later, Scott & Sargeant became a Steamer Trading shop when the owners

decided to retire. When we had finished the shop had grown into no.28, next door, and acquired wonderful new spaces for displaying fabulous kitchenware – and even a café. Today, our Horsham store is a real emporium, with a fantastic selection of everything for the kitchen and table spread out over 7,000 sq.ft.

The future of estate agency comes to Horsham Did you know that over 90% of home buyers now use the internet to search for their next home? That’s why new estate agent Open House Horsham, is based entirely online. “We don’t need an expensive high street office”, says owner Michelle Bradley. “We can pass the savings on to you.” The estate agent, one of several local agents in the national Open House network, is offering a special fee of 0.5%, inc VAT, until the end of 2015, and a standard rate after that of just 0.6%, inc VAT, as well as fixed-price fee options. Having lived and worked in Horsham for over 16 years, Michelle has the local knowledge that people expect from their estate agent. Being online doesn’t mean being remote and impersonal, as Michelle explains: “We offer the same local estate agency services as the conventional agencies in Horsham. I’ll come to your

house to do a valuation, I provide accompanied viewings, negotiate and secure offers, and see the sale through to completion. In fact, it’s a much more personal, oneto-one service, as I’m involved in each house sale from valuation, through to completion. In addition, our telephone lines are open 24/7, so you will never miss a potential buyer." Open House Horsham will also be able to get your house ready, for sale on the internet, in a far shorter time frame: “I have really flexible working hours”, says Michelle. “I can even pop round to your house in the evening, to collect or sign paperwork, without you needing to make a special trip into town.” Like traditional estate agents, this one has a database of buyers. You can easily register your details on the website – which is far better than traipsing around town visiting each different estate agent.

Michelle is also acutely aware that house hunters are inundated with property details by email, most of which don’t match any of their criteria: “With the more personal service we are offering, we’ll be much more targeted with the property details we mail out.” Michelle knows that people think estate agents charge a large fee for, what appears to be, very little work. “Having worked in an estate agency, I know this isn’t true”, she says, “For example, there’s a lot of work that goes on, once an offer has been accepted. But in an area like Horsham, where many houses sell themselves, I know people will want value for money. That’s what we offer, along with a truly personalised level of service, to make your move go as smoothly as possible.” So, if you want to get moving in 2015, visit www.openhousehorsham.co.uk or call Michelle on 01403 253867 for a free valuation.

Parkrun’s founder praises Horsham’s first anniversary

Horsham’s 1st anniversary parkrun start

Athletics

Dave Smith – Sports Editor

Last Saturday morning Horsham parkrun celebrated its first birthday with a record 380 runners taking part including the parkrun founder, Paul Sinton-Hewitt CBE. Since the initial event, held in Bushey, Hertfordshire in 2004 parkrun events take place in ten countries throughout the world. All parkrun’s are free to enter and are

run entirely by volunteers who set out the course, marshal the race and record the individual times. In addition to signing copies of the new parkrun coffee table book Paul Sinton-Hewitt also added his signature to ‘Bolt’ the Horsham parkrun elephant that has been part of The Rotary Club of Horsham’s Elephantastic Trail. Bolt, now proudly carrying the founder’s signature, is up for auction along with all the other elephants from the trail at www.elephantastic.org.uk, where bids can be placed. Monies raised from Bolt’s sale will go to Horsham parkrun to help ensure its continued success and growth.

Horsham Park dodge the showers at East Grinstead Bowls Dave Smith – Sports Editor Horsham Park’s visit to East Grinstead resulted in Park having a successful afternoon, winning on 3 of the 5 rinks and by 98 shots to East Grinstead’s 82.

Park’s top rink was skipped by David James with Brian Milner and Marie Davies who overcame their opponents, winning 29 to 15 Park’s top rink was skipped by David James with Brian Milner and Marie Davies who overcame their opponents, winning 29 to 15. Paul Sinton Hewitt CBE (Blue shirt) with Horsham parkrun core team Raff Vitale, Phil Liberman, Verity Dods & Helen Walden

Before the start of the anniversary run the end of year presentations were made. Top male and female runners awards went to Harry Wilcox and Karen Broomer, the volunteers of the year awards went to Christian Liberman and Yan Yip and the overall parkrunner of the year award was presented to Sarah Mitchelson. The run was due to be a ‘Naked’ run (meaning no timing equipment carried by the runners) with runners predicting their times beforehand and then running tech free to see who could get closest to their time, over 100 runners joined in with Rob Shapland getting to within 1.2 sec-

onds of his 24.56 estimate. 86 people attained a personal best on the day and 44 people ran parkrun for the very first time, throughout the year an incredible 2523 runners have taken part in Horsham’s parkrun running 11576 times to a distance of over 56000 km; the average attendance has been 214. Paul Sinton-Hewitt told the District Post “Although there are over 600 parkruns taking place this morning each one is unique within the parkrun family, creating its own identity and character. It’s great to see people of all capabilities and ages taking part and having fun, it’s just

fantastic”. The effort put in by Philip Liberman, Horsham parkrun’s driving force, was recognised by all participants; much of the events local success can be attributed to Philip’s enthusiasm and energy. Adjourning to the Conservatory café after the run for the traditional coffee and cake, Paul Sinton-Hewitt added "I always enjoy visiting Horsham parkrun. The people are friendly and welcoming and the course is wonderful". To take part in the weekly run or to help out as a volunteer visit www. parkrun.org.uk/horsham

Pulborough’s finals weekend brings out the best of the club Bowls Jane Gray – Pulborough Three triples played 18 ends with tight scores away against West Tarring but Pulborough managed to just beat Tarring by 2 shots 48/46. Top rink for Pulborough went to skip Mick Ralph, Kath Ayling and Trevor, 19/16. Later in the week away at Arundel Pulborough had a far more comfortable victory, ending up 106 – 70 winners. Top rink, with a strong score of 36/16, was skip Jan Barnes with Malcolm Gray, and Colin Andrews. Finals weekend at Pulborough brings out the club’s most talented players producing some quality games and this year certainly didn't disappoint. The Novice Cup was contested between Treacle and Steve Adsett. Treacle couldn't keep up with the heavy scoring produced by Steve who won 21/11 after 19 ends. The 3-2-1, or Diggle, as it is known in Pulborough, was played next, with the winner needing 72 shots for victory. Matt Ives and Chris Etherington played a thrilling game of 23 ends with the result going to Matt 72/66. In the pairs’ trophy Ade Stratton and Mick Ralph faced Alison Turrel and

Ivan Salmon. Both teams produced some stunning shots but Ade and Mick kept ahead to take the win 25 shots to 21. The final game of the day was the two wood between Steve Adsett and John Brown. Despite his best efforts, Steve couldn't keep pace with the scoring of John who finally took victory after 29 ends 24/17. Sunday saw the conclusion of the club finals, starting with the Novice Salver played between Steve Adsett and Mick Ayling, Steve eventually taking the match 22/18. The handicap singles followed between Chris Etherington and Steve Adsett - Steve making his third finals appearance - the final score was 27/17 to Chris. The Ladies Championship, played over 21 ends, was contested by Treacle and Jan Barnes. The scores were level until end 16 when Treacle found another gear to pull ahead and win 23/16. The final event was the Men's Championship between top county player, Matt Ives, and one of the Clubs biggest characters, George Lewis. The lead changed hands throughout the game with the scores being within 1 point of each other until end 19 when Matt got his nose in front to win by just 2 points 21/19.

Mid-table for Storrington after tight finish Bowls John Wharmby - Storrington BC

Storrington have finished in mid table

Horsham suffer worst of conditions to finish fifth Saturday September 5 - Sussex Premier League Horsham 171 All Out (47.1 overs) East Grinstead 175-7 (37 overs) East Grinstead won by 3 wickets Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham’s erratic season ended in defeat at East Grinstead but they

were unfortunate to have the worst of the conditions after losing the toss and batting first. Early rain postponed the start twice and when the game got underway the outfield was wet and the light poor. Bradley Hatchett took 6-60 and Ben Shoare, Tom Clark, Kevin Stoute and Sam Attfield all made twenties, but the batting honours went to Craig Gallagher – coming in at nine.

Craig’s undefeated 50 carried Horsham to a defendable 171 – until the sun came out and batting became markedly easier. Against East Grinstead’s strong line up Horsham needed to take early wickets but although Ben Shoare subsequently took 4-47, partnerships built around opener Will Adkin’s classy 52 paved the way to a home win, Horsham finishing the season a disappointing fifth in the table with 331 points. The maximum (30) point win left East Grinstead in the runner up spot on 467, four behind Champions Roffey. Scorecard link – http://sussexcl.play-cricket.com/website/results/2356375

A loss against Field Place and a win against West Tarring have left Storrington in mid-table. Storrington played at home against second placed Field Place for their next to the last league game. 3 of the 4 teams succumbed with only Howard White’s team winning, resulting in a final score of 66 – 78 shots. Storrington’s last league match of the season was at home against West Tarring. A win was essential to maintain their reasonable position in the league; a good win could, possibly, put them in 4th place. David Ogley’s team and Paul Leatherbarrow’s both progressed with steady determination to win by 14 and 13 shots respectively. Peter Newman’s team could not combat the West Tarring team’s constant

pressure and lost by 7 shots. Howard White’s team found the opposition a comparable match, but failed at the last hurdle, losing the last shot of the match to finish down by one shot. With hindsight this proved an important result as a win would have put Storrington in 4th place and West Tarring in 6th. However it was not to be and the final match result of an overall win by Storrington, gave them 6 league points (against West Tarring’s 4), leaving them mid-table. Geoff Page, Gerry Newman, Richard Pettet & David Ogley won 22-8 Mike Obrien, Peter Coles, Harry Kendall & Paul Leatherbarrow won 28-15 R Naldrett, David Bain, Chris Walter & Howard White lost 16-17 Les Wilson, D Larcombe, John Rimmer & Peter Newman lost 22-15 Storrington 79 - 62 West Tarring. Points - 6-4 to Storrington

Local Junior Football Round Up

Horsham Sparrows U14 Boys team 2015-16 Brockham Badgers U16 11 – 2 Roffey Robins Athletic U16 After a lacklustre 14/15 season, Robins Athletic made a storming start to the new season in this Division C fixture away at Brockam. With their squad boosted by a number of new signings, Athletic had established a convincing 5-1 lead by half time. The second half unfolded much the same as the first with Robins maintaining their pressure on the Badgers’ goal. The final score was an impressive 11 – 2 to the visitors. The scorers for Robins were Alex Barker (4), Sam Holt (3), George Chantrill (2), Joe McGrane, Joe Lamberty and Thomas Segal. Horsham Sparrows Under 11 – The team travelled away to Copthorne and drew their game 2-2

Under 12 – The team had a close match against Forest Row. Hugh settled the nerves by opening the scoring before Forest Row levelled. Two goals from Liam, one either side of half-time, saw Sparrows take control of the game before Forest Row scored their second. A final effort by all of the Sparrows players saw them hold out for a very exciting win 3 - 2. Man of the Match was Oliver H. Under 13 – A convincing start to the season saw the team play St Paul’s Panthers in Horsham Park. A hat trick from Luke and goals from Connor, Tyler, Charlie and James ensured a comfortable win. Under 14 – Opening game of the season for the Horsham Sparrows Under 14's saw an away game at Maiden-

bower Colts Red. Sparrows opened scoring early in the second half with a goal from Zak, this was closely followed by a fine double save from Louis to keep Sparrows ahead. Sparrows dominated the rest of the second half with a hat trick from Man of the Match Alex and goals from Matt "O" and Jack making a 6-0 victory to the Sparrows Under 15 – A disappointing start to the campaign saw Sparrows 5 – 0 down at half time to Ashurstwood. However, the team rallied and put in a stronger second have performance and a goal from George V left the final score 1-5. Under 16 – The team won their first game of the season by beating Ashinton 3-0 in Horsham Park Women’s Team – Friendly game match report Sparrows’ women playing their first game as ladies against Haywards Heath from the southern counties league produced a very encouraging and entertaining performance. Sparrows took the lead in the second minute from great play between Hannah and Naomi and finished from the edge of the box by Amber. The game saw debuts for Daisy in defence, Steph Harriet and Jeannie. There were also notable performances from the younger team members GG, Abbie and Lucy all making use of the big pitch. Haywards Heath equalised in the last minute of the first half and despite a close second half they ran out winners 4-1 with their greater experience showing through in the final quarter.

Captain Ben Williams is delighted with Billingshurst's season Saturday September 5 - Sussex Premier League Billingshurst 126 All Out (40.2 overs) Cuckfield 75 All Out (21.5 overs) Billingshurst won by 51 runs Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter Coming into this match Billingshurst had an outside chance of relegation, needing points to secure survival. At tea, after being bowled out for 125 they were not safe, but speaking volumes for their determination and self-belief, they won the match by 51 runs, finishing a highly creditable sixth with seven victories in their first season in the Sussex Premier League. Batting first Billingshurst reached 44-1 but with Nick Patterson (5-47) and Josh Hayward (4-29) bowling accurately in ultra-helpful conditions, wickets tumbled with only Scott Stratton (28) and Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi (20) making any impact. At 95-9 a Hurst win seemed highly improbable, until a priceless last wicket 31 run partnership between Mike Burroughs (22) and captain Ben Williams (15 not out) provided hope. This season they have specialised in snatching nerve-jangling close wins

from seemingly lost causes, yet this time, after the initial breakthrough, the result was not in serious doubt. Sussex second XI’s Abidine Sakande (3-42) and, coming back from injury following a side strain, Andy Barr bowling unchanged with a priceless 6-28 - soon had Cuckfield on the ropes at 17-4 and then 37-8. Cuckfield’s wicketkeeper, Marcus Campopiano (36) batting with their captain, Hayward, put on 35 together but Hurst were not to be denied. Chairman Jim Burroughs said: “Oh, my goodness - we’ve had so many tight games! This was a difficult wicket and Ben and Mike got us up to semi respectability – then Andy bowled absolutely brilliantly – we’re just over the moon!” Andy Barr told us: “I just ran up and put it on the spot and the pitch did the rest!” and Ben Williams summed up Hurst’s season saying: “We’ve been promoted in each of the two previous seasons so playing in the Premier League has been a major challenge. Doing the double over Horsham was the pinnacle, confirming that we can compete. We’ve consolidated our position and will now look to build on what we’ve achieved.” Billingshurst scorecard link: http:// sussexcl.play-cricket.com/website/ results/2356454

YM beat Elmstead to progress in FA Vase Photos by Clive Turner

YM's Harrison Cheesman battles for the ball Saturday September 5 - FA Vase First Qualifying Round Horsham YMCA 3 – 2 FC Elmstead Football Tom Norris – Horsham YMCA Horsham YMCA survived a serious first half scare before narrowly seeing off FC Elmstead 3-2 in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase at Gorings Mead last Saturday.

A deflected George Jones strike from distance gave Elmstead the lead just after the quarter hour mark, but YM quickly levelled when striker Nick Sullivan headed home from close range. A lack of communication in the home defence allowed the visitors’ Matt Knuckey to restore their advantage less than sixty seconds later, before hosts’ midfielder Luke Gedling’s free kick in added time at the end of the first period made it 2-2 at the break.

Liam Hunter takes a shot at the Elmstead goal

YM were more dominant after the restart, but still less than convincing in their performance, and only a moment of magic from winger Dave Brown eventually separated the two sides, as he cut in from the left and unleashed an unstoppable strike that flew into the net. Manager Peter Buckland commented: “It was another laboured performance and that’s an understatement. You can’t always be at your best in football. And when

that’s the case, you usually get six or seven players carry you through a game. It’s not very often that you get eleven that don’t turn up and I’d say that eleven players just weren’t at it today. “I talked to the players about complacency, because they [Elmstead] were going to have a real big day out here and a real big go at us. This is the highest level ground and game that their club has ever played in, so it was something special for

them. We gifted them a second goal and the first one took a really wicked deflection, but that happens. Maybe it’s not as disastrous as I initially feel it is now straight after the game, because at the end of the day we’re through to the next round.” Horsham YMCA: Lockwood, D. Sullivan, Gathern, Crane, H. Horner, Dugdale (Hunter 60), Gedling, D. Brown, Wright (Cheesman 84), J. Brown (White 54), N. Sullivan. Unused subs: Wood, Schaaf.

Lively Kieron Pamment Hat-trick helps Heath into next round shines in Hornets cup win Photos by Gary Chester

Saturday September 5 - FA Vase First Qualifying Round Horsham 3 – 0 Epsom & Ewell Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor After exiting the FA Cup the previous weekend this match gained importance if the Hornets cup exploits for the season were not to fizzle out completely. However any fears of an upset were settled early in the second half before being made comfortable with two very late goals to overcome a spirited Epsom & Ewell team. During a somewhat cagey first half, in which Horsham had slightly the better of the play, the only issue for both sides was not being able to turn some decent football into goals. Most of Horsham’s efforts were from distance while the visitors had a couple of chances to take the lead. If Epsom had grabbed the half time lead it would have left manager Di Paola to rue the lack of a clinical finish to some elaborate - sometimes over complicated - Horsham football. The second half was only five minutes old when man of the match Kieron Pamment put a tempting cross into the box that the visitors captain

Sam Currie could only help into his own net to give Horsham a lead that their clever football just about deserved. The goal seemed to settle the home side and led to them dominating the remainder of the match. Pamment - who has been outstanding since his arrival – caused major problems to the visitors and proved a good focal point to the controlled football his team were playing. While at 1-0 the game was always in the balance however and although now being outplayed Epsom & Ewell had a few breakaways that could have spelled trouble for Horsham. Fittingly it was Pamment who finally put the game to bed, slotting home in the 85th minute after good play from substitutes Samir Hadi and Terry Dodd and then making sure with his second three minutes into injury time to make the final score a more comfortable 3-0. In the next round – to be played on October 3 - Horsham will travel to Selsey’s High Street Ground where they will be looking to keep the dream of a Wembley trip in their sights. Horsham Team: Williams, Duncan, Knee, Keehan (Hunt 57) Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Clark, Murfin (Dodd 65) Pamment, Boswell (Hadi 76). Unused Subs: Lewis, Chadwick.

Heath had a comfortable win over St Francis

Saturday September 5 - Sussex Principal RUR Cup Broadbridge Heath 5 - 1 St Francis Rangers Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor Broadbridge Heath won through to the 3rd round of the Sussex Principal RUR Cup with a 5-1 victory over fellow Premier Division side

St Francis Rangers. The Haywards Heath based team have struggled so far this season having lost their manager and entire first team squad during the summer and it’s been very much a case of rebuilding for newly appointed manager Dave Shearing. An early chance fell to Ollie Moore, who was playing a forward role alongside Tiago but the Heath midfielder shot over the crossbar.

Rob Godfrey put a header straight at the visitor’s keeper before Heath keeper Michael Chester was tested by a powerful attempt from Johnson. The deadlock was broken in the 11th minute when Moore slotted past the St Francis keeper Szafranski. Seven minutes later Moore hit his and his teams’ second by firing through a packed area leaving Szafranski no chance. Just before the break former Heath player Jeffrey Mahadoo pulled one back for the visitors with a tremendous individual goal to bring his side back into the game. Just nine minutes into the restart Moore had his hat-trick; rising above everyone to head into the St Francis net. Substitute Jake Legrange made it 4-1 after some good play from Adam Wicking and Godfrey, then with six minutes remaining Legrange grabbed his second to complete the convincing victory. After the game manager Painter was delighted with the result, he also praised the attitude of the St Francis Rangers players who he said never gave up and made his team work really hard to get the result. Broadbridge Heath team: M.Chester, Sultan (Wicking 70), Weller, S.Chester, Familton, Godfrey, Waddingham, Wragg (J Robinson 55), Moore (Legrange 70), Andrade, Sandell.

Martin Read – Sports Reporter

Saturday September 5 - Sussex Premier League Middleton 125 All Out (49.1 overs) Roffey 127-2 (19.2 overs) Roffey won by 8 wickets On the last Saturday of the season only Roffey or East Grinstead could win the league. A maximum point victory would ensure that Roffey were uncatchable – and they stormed home as champions, retaining their title, by 4pm after walloping Middleton, condemning them to relegation (along with Eastbourne). Roffey put Middleton in and soon had them 8-2. Then Barbadian all rounder Jofra Archer bludgeoned 28, including a six through a neighbouring bedroom window, before evergreen Sean Heather’s watchful innings was ended by another stunning Leigh Harrison catch. Beck Hemingway top scored with 41, but George Fleming’s 3-36 – taking his seasonal tally to 47 scalps – and Ben Manenti’s 5-31 eroded Middleton’s resistance. A target of 126 was inadequate, Josh Fleming (37 not out) and Mike Norris (47) seeing Roffey across the line at the double.

The Roffey team celebrate retaining the Sussex Premier League title As congratulatory tweets came in from friendly rivals, Roffey President Mick Webb said: “Even better than last year – a great achievement. We were bowled out for 62 at East Grinstead and bounced back with six straight wins – fantastic!” Chairman Mark Hamilton added: “The great thing is we’ve improved – last year we had 11 wins and 401 points, this time we’ve had 15 and got 471”.

Captain Josh Fleming told us: “It’s been a tough season but today we got it done easier than we’d envisaged.” Brother George told us: “It was a freak result at East Grinstead – we knew we were better than that”. What the other players said: “A great way to round off the season and I hope I’ll be back next year.” (Overseas signing allrounder Ben Manenti, with over 40 wickets and almost 400 runs) –

“An even bigger achievement to better our 2014 title – we’ve got the best team spirit and best support in the league” (Matt Davies). “It was fitting for Josh to see us home – brilliant – and, great credit to our groundsman Drew Smallwood for getting games on week after week.” (Mike Norris). Rohit Jagota’s wife Natalie, confidently assuring everyone at tea time: “We’ve won, we’ve done it, I know we have!”

And, a final quip from Leigh Harrison: “It’s been great to be back at Roffey for these last two seasons – I never realised that my return would bring us such success!” Hastings and Worthing have been promoted back into the Sussex Premier League for next season. Hornets progress from feisty cup tie Late Dan Evans header sinks valiant Wickers Photo by John Lines

Tuesday September 8 - Sussex Principal RUR Charity Cup Second Round Southwick 1 – 2 Horsham YMCA Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter

Scott Murphin fouled by the keeper for a penalty Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor The Hornets first ever Peter Bentley Cup tie turned out to be a feisty affair in which referee Hughes showed seven yellow cards as Horsham stood up to Pagham’s strong arm tactics. The visitors took the lead after 17 minutes when a harmless looking free kick from Pagham’s Simmons was not cut out by Jordan Clark allowing the ball to evade the wrong footed ‘keeper Williams and find the Hornets net. The goal forced the Hornets to up their game and to settle into some periods of decent play

Jordon Clark slots home the penalty kick

despite the aggressive nature of the visitor’s challenges. On 38 minutes Horsham grabbed the equaliser. Terry Dodd played in Scott Murfin who was clumsily fouled in the area by Pagham ‘keeper Binfield resulting in a penalty that Jordan Clark - atoning for his earlier error - slotted past the offender for 1-1. Almost immediately from the restart a run and cross from Murfin was met by Terry Dodd who tapped in for a 2-1 half time lead to Horsham. The second half saw chances aplenty for both sides mixed in with some decent football, some hefty challenges and the resulting yellow

cards; however neither side managed to add to the score leaving the Hornets to progress to the next round. In what was another good win for Di Paola’s ever improving team it was also a good sign to see that 104 spectators took advantage of reduced prices and turned out to watch what is in effect a minor cup competition for the club that undoubtedly ranks low in importance alongside the top priority of promotion. Horsham Team: Williams, Hunt, Knee, Keehan (Lewis 85) Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Clark, Murfin, Dodd (Duncan 89) Hadi (Boswell 77) Unused Subs: Chadwick, Storrie, Lewis.

An injury time header from defender Dan Evans secured Horsham YMCA a place in the third round of the Sussex RUR Charity Cup on Tuesday evening, after they narrowly overcame Southwick 2-1 at Old Barn Way. Wickers’ midfielder Richard Hudson’s deflected twenty-yard strike gave the Division 1 hosts the lead against the run of play midway through the first half, but YM levelled ten minutes before the break when winger Dave Brown marauded past two defenders and lashed home from inside the box. Both sides then spurned good chances after the restart. Visitors’ striker Sam Schaaf saw a drilled effort desperately cleared off the goal line, whilst substitute Paul White’s glancing header was expertly tipped over the crossbar by impressive home goalkeeper James Hollis. At the opposite end, Southwick goalscorer Hudson hit the upright, An-

drew McDowell was smartly denied by YM stopper Simon Lockwood and his follow up then thwarted on the line by defender Dean Carden, before Ross Myers also struck against the woodwork. With the tie seemingly destined for extra time, YM full back Evans then saved his side’s blushes and delivered a cruel blow to a spirited Southwick, as he headed home an in-swinging Brown corner with the last kick of the game, five minutes into added time. Assistant YM manager, Dean Potter, commented: “I thought that we looked lethargic. They [Southwick] worked really hard. They pressed us, they had a nice shape and tried to counter attack and even though we had a lot of possession, we just didn’t have that cutting edge. We’ve had two poor games but got through them and good teams do that. And we are a good team and we have got good players, but we’re under no illusions. Tonight wasn’t good enough and we’ll need a big improvement for Saturday against Burgess Hill.” YM Team: Lockwood, Doherty, Gathern, Burgess (Carden 54) Evans, Hunter (Dugdale 66) Gedling, D. Sullivan, Wright, D. Brown, Schaaf (White 73) Unused subs: J. Brown, Cheesman
