Reward offered in hunt for robber

The man at Elm Grove

phil dennett News Editor

Police are offering a £500 reward in a renewed appeal in the hunt for an armed masked man suspected of carrying out robberies in the Horsham area. Detectives recently appealed through the District Post and other media for public help in tracing the

man, but have now issued the offer of a reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction. And they have revealed for the first time that he was masked. The robberies took place on September 22, 19 and September 6, all at about the same time of day, 4pm. In each case the man masked his face with stocking material. In their latest report on the incidents, police say that on September 22 at 4.15pm they were called to the general stores in Elm Grove, Horsham where a man had come in holding a

hammer and then demanded money. He hit the till several times with the hammer and took money from the counter before leaving the shop and running up the alley opposite Eversfield Road. At about 4.20pm on September 19 a man entered The Warnham Village Store in Warnham. He brandished a knife and demanded money from the shop assistant, but other staff heard the threats and came to assist. The man ran out of the shop empty handed, turning right into Church Street.

On September 6 at about 3.45pm a man came into the Caterways store on Merryfield Drive, Horsham and demanded cash while holding a hammer. The shop worker handed over about £200 pounds and the intruder left in the direction of Greenway. Detective Sergeant Jon Robeson said: "We are offering a £500 reward for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the suspect. We are linking these three robberies, due to the similar actions and description of the suspect, the locations and the similarities in times. The

Local students get casual for charity England Rugby team supports school’s remembrance garden

Pupils raised hundreds of pounds for children with genetic disorders. The girls at Farlington School,

Horsham, are hoping to hand over more than last year’s £420 to Genetic Disorders UK from their Jeans

for Genes fund-raiser. The event raises money to give care and support for children and families who are affected by a genetic disorder. The school has supported the annual event for the last nine years. The girls paid a £2 contribution to wear jeans instead of their school uniform. The money raised on Jeans for Genes day supports very small charities and helps them get their voices heard and provides vital services for families living with rare conditions. Claudine Maude, Farlington’s charities co-ordinator, said, “The girls always enjoy wearing jeans to school and supporting this worthwhile charity. At Farlington, we feel it is important that students are encouraged to work with charities and to do something for the wider community.”

Man’s body found in ditch A body believed to be a man reported missing in July has been found. At 4.40pm on Sunday members of the public saw a body in a drainage ditch of the River Adur, just off the A283 Steyning by-pass, south of Upper Beeding.

At 4.40pm on Sunday members of the public saw a body in a drainage ditch of the river The body was recovered and police said earlier this week they believe that they knew his identity. However, formal identification had not yet taken place and official confirmation of the man’s name was delayed until later this week, while relatives were informed. Sussex Police said: “There are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances, but the death is being treated as unexplained at this time.” In the summer local media publicised an appeal to help police find an elderly man, and said they were concerned for his well-being.

Lauren Copley, Year seven student said: “They gave a really funny and interactive performance that showed the importance of always being streetwise. I now understand how my own behaviour and actions could impact on both my and my friends’ safety. Using your phone and the roads at the same time is a complete no-no.”

England did not cut much of a dash in the rugby World Cup but they still have some grateful fans at a Horsham school. Staff and students at Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School in Horsham have been given a signed rugby shirt by the England team. The school wants to auction the shirt to raise money for their new Butterfly Remembrance Garden and is welcoming bids directly from people in the Horsham community. School Head Teacher Lesley Dyer said “We have begun transforming a part of the school’s existing sensory garden into a special remembrance area. “We now need extra funds to help

Families of these students will be invited to decide where they would like to place the butterfly in the garden. Youngsters targeted in new rail Scouts celebrate 95 years safety campaign by the police have just got into the habit of taking risks, and that has to stop.” Officers have been handing out thousands of leaflets during the week. They have also visited schools and colleges, helping to promote Network Rail’s latest level crossing safety campaign, which is aimed at students and young people.

Students and other young people are being targeted in a crossing safety campaign by British Transport Police officers this week. Operation Look, which started on Monday, has seen extra patrols at a number of crossings. Police recorded more than 3,500 offences at crossings during 2014/15, with more than 2,500 offenders identified and dealt with. In May the District Post highlighted the case of a young man captured on video at Littlehaven rail crossing,

dumping his cycle on a platform and dashing along tracks. He survived but was then prosecuted. While the majority of those offences are committed by motorists, transport police officers also want to make sure pedestrians are aware of the dangers too. Inspector Becky Warren said as the week started: ““We’ll be stepping up our activity during Operation Look to ensure we speak to as many people as possible about using crossings safely. “There are crossings where people

10,000 people in the UK need an organ transplant and that three people every day will die while they are waiting This campaign has been launched this week to coincide with the start of the academic year, when many young people find themselves in new towns and cities. Darren Cottrell, head of level crossing safety at Network Rail said: “This week, we are especially focussing our efforts on students and young people, who are the target of our new level crossing safety campaign. The message to them is relevant for us all: stay alert and stay safe.”

Scouts celebrating their group’s 95th year need more helpers as it reaches towards its centenary. 1st Roffey Scout Group is believed to be the oldest continuously active Scout Group in Horsham. It was first registered with the Scout Association on September 30 1920 and celebrated the milestone at its headquarters in Cricket Field Lane. Horsham District Commissioner Peter Scofield presented Explorer Leader Trevor Walker with his 30 years service award and Scout Leader Dave White received his award for 25. At the party scouts and supporters saw photos of activities that the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts have enjoyed in the past year as well as photos and videos from past camps and events over the last 95 years. Group Scout Leader Chris Sillett

congratulated the leaders and young members for their hard work and achievements over the last year. He also thanked the executive committee for all its work behind the scenes. Its efforts enabled the group to buy a new minibus, as well as build an extension to the headquarters for some much -needed equipment storage space. The group said: “1st Roffey Scout Group has a good history of support and that is why it has been active for ninety five years. Scouting relies heavily on adult volunteers and there is always room for more people to get involved. Anyone wishing to help can commit as little or as much time as they like. Horsham nursery claims national award for quality A Horsham nursery has won a national award for its high quality. The Little Barn Owls Nursery and Farm School captured the ‘Nursery of the Year’ award at the Nursery World Awards in London. The awards showcase the best individuals, organisations, initiatives and resources in early years education and childcare from across the UK. The Little Barn Owls team was presented with the award at a black tie dinner in London after waiting for the result since February when the shortlist was announced. After accepting the award, Hayley Peacock, head of Little Barn Owls said: “We are absolutely full of joy and pride at winning the UK's Nursery of the Year 2015 “I am personally incredibly proud of the Little Barn Owls team who

M&S store unites to help charity Customers and staff at the Horsham branch of Marks and Spencer have helped to raise more than £900 for children’s charity Action Medical Research. Those visiting and working at the store in Swan Walk raised the sum in three months through donations for bag packing, a raffle and a countertop collection. Action Medical Research, which has its main offices in North Parade, Horsham, has spent more than £110 million since it was founded in 1952, helping support some medical breakthroughs that have helped save thousands of children’s lives and changed many more. Some of the work it previously supported is now commonplace in medical care, such as the vaccines for

polio and rubella, the use of ultrasound scanning in pregnancy and the importance of taking folic acid before and during pregnancy to prevent spina bifida. It is currently supporting research into meningitis, Down syndrome, epilepsy and premature birth, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children. Paula Ray, Action Medical Research’s Community Fundraising Manager for London and the southeast, said: “We’re grateful to all the staff and customers at Horsham M&S who helped to raise this money which will help save and change the lives of sick babies and children,” she says. Peter Powell, Store Manager at Marks and Spencer in Horsham, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to

present Action Medical Research with the results of our fundraising, which forms part of M&S’ Plan A commitment to support the local community. We’re all very passionate about the children’s charity and I’ve been really proud of how motivated the team has been in its efforts to generate vital funds for this cause. Competition for this award was tougher than ever this year with Little Bar Owls up against stiff competition from nurseries across the UK including three other exceptional finalists. Chimney fires on the rise National award for Sussex police Billingshurst is one of the biggest areas for chimney fires in West Sussex, figures reveal. As Autumn grips and temperatures begin to drop, firefighters are reminding people of the danger that could be lurking inside their chimneys and urging them to have them professionally swept. In a year up to March, Billingshurst had the third highest number of chimney fires in West Sussex, say figures from the county’s fire and rescue service. Across the county they were 12 per cent up on last year, with some homes or offices left uninhabitable. In the Horsham district, Billingshurst had 15, Henfield two, Horsham eight, Patridge Green four, Storrington four and Steyning two. Jackie Boyle, Community Fire Safety Manager for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, said: “Chimneys that have not been used during the spring and summer months could become blocked or unsafe and people certainly shouldn’t be complacent about the risk. Chimney fires are one of the most commonly occurring incidents that our crews attend. “Don’t let getting your chimney swept be one of those jobs you leave until it’s too late. The cost of a professional sweep is certainly a lot less than being left to count the cost of a fire in your home or business.” The service says by following a few simple steps the risk of a chim-

ney fire can be reduced: • Keep chimneys and flues clean and well maintained • Always use a fire guard to protect against flying sparks and hot embers • Ensure the fire is fully extinguished before going to bed or leaving the house

officer for mental health work

In a year up to March, Billingshurst had the third highest number of chimney fires in West Sussex, say figures from the county’s fire and rescue service • When burning wood, use dry, seasoned woods only • Never use petrol or paraffin to light your fire • Do not overload the grate or appliance • Make sure wood burners and other fire appliances are installed and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions

A Sussex Police officer who transformed a support group for women in policing has won a national award. Supt Di Roskilly also introduced mental health street triage to the force, to help assess people with potential mental health problems.

Supt Roskilly was presented with the President's Award for Diversity at the Police Superintendents' Association of England and Wales annual conference. She also chairs Evolve, the Sussex Police women's network support

group. Under her leadership the group has increased work within the force to support women and other underrepresented groups during promotion procedures, and also activity in relation to the menopause, fitness testing, part time and flexible working and maternity. She has grown Evolve to become one of the strongest and most successful of the Sussex Network Groups and Evolve's work on social media has brought followers from all over the world with an average reach of 31,500 people. In February 2015 street triage was introduced across Sussex, with outstanding results. The first three months saw a 78% reduction in the number of people detained under S136 for the Mental Health Act being held in police custody in West Sussex. All Sussex Police cells have been withdrawn as a place of safety for children and young people detained under Section 136. Supt Roskilly said: "I am really pleased to be given this award. I hope that the work I have led and the police and mental health colleagues that have supported me in making it happen have brought progress and pride to both Sussex and to Sussex Police, and helped to improve the service we provide to the communities we serve."

Working plough horses are a favourite with visitors of all ages, with the museum's own Shires among the teams of draught horses at work. Vintage tractors will be busy preparing the ground for sowing after the harvest and there will be a display of tractors and farm implements for visitors to enjoy. The weekend’s celebrations will also include a fun dog show, dog displays and falconry, and a chance for visitors to enjoy a horse-drawn wagon ride. The threshing of the wheat crop, separating the grain from the straw, is one of the main attractions during the weekend. In the days before combine harvesters, the ‘threshing

train’ was a common sight working the farms and travelling the lanes during the autumn and winter months. It usually comprised a

Horticulture classes, dog agility, flower arrangements, animal displays and dozens of stalls selling everything from food to “combat” gear kept the big crowd busy at the Autumn Show and Game Fair. The show drew people from across West Sussex and East Sussex, as well as further afield, to the large South of England Showground.

The group formed a panel of experts and offered advice and guidance to year 10 pupils about applying to and studying at Oxford or Cambridge.

Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley hosted the day with the college’s Oxbridge link access officers

Students have been offered advice about studying at England’s two most famous universities. Youngsters from Tanbridge and Millais schools in Horsham went to the town’s Collyer’s college for a Year 10 Oxbridge Day. Following on from the college’s Year 10 Open Evening, pupils returned for a whole day of talks, lectures, advice and role play. Collyer’s Principal Sally Brom-

ley hosted the day with the college's Oxbridge link access officers, Emma Coulson from St John's College, Cambridge and Xina Moss from Churchill College, Oxford. The speakers were assisted during the day by current Collyer's students, Holly Schofield, Sam Hubbard, Emily Farr, Aidan Marks and Hugh Cook, who all have offers for Oxbridge courses starting in September. They joined forces with ex-Collyer’s stu-

Ian McAlister, who runs the college’s progression directorate, with a particular focus on higher education, said: “We have a very good record of admission to these colleges and we are improving and building upon our experience in this area every year. The Year 10 initiative has been so successful that we are considering making it an even larger event next year.” Principal Sally Bromley said: “It was wonderful to see these eager and talented year 10 students so engaged. We’re very much looking forward to having them at Collyer’s next year.”

Cycling celebrity Anna Glowinski found herself in the judge’s role when more than 150 people attending a free drop-in event at Partridge Green to celebrate the West Sussex countryside. Nearly 150 people claimed their free coffee and cake at the event, held at Stan’s Bike Shack on Sunday 27 September, and many more dropped in to take part in the activities. Anna, who took up cyclo cross at five years old and has ridden BMX, endure, downhill and cross country, joined leader of West Sussex County Council Louise Goldsmith to judge a bicycle show and ride competition, which had more than 30 entrants. Bike lights were awarded to the winners of the different categories. Sussex Police provided free bike marking to about 30 bikes, helping to prevent cycle theft, while the county council’s ‘Doctor Bike’ service carried out free cycle health checks for visitors. The drop-in event was held as part of the West Sussex Weekends cam-

paign to encourage residents and visitors to enjoy and share favourite walking and cycling routes in the county. Louise said: “It was great fun to be at the event and I was delighted to see so many families and passers-by drop in. We were extremely lucky with the weather, which really did provide the icing on the cake for a fun day. “It was a great opportunity to celebrate our beautiful West Sussex countryside. We have lots to offer and lots to explore in our great outdoors – with half term fast a pproa c hing, why not plan your family days out to discover new parts of our countryside?” Steve Sole, owner of Stan’s Bike Shack, said: “We hoped the West Sussex Weekends event would attract cyclists of all persuasions, and it definitely did. It was great to see families here, confirming that cycling is for everyone to enjoy. With a range of activities on offer, there was something for everyone.” For inspiration on where to visit in West Sussex and for ideas for walking and cycling routes, visit www.westsussex-weekends.com

Work in the Henfield and Steyning area for the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm is expected to start soon. The first of 12 stages of the landbased work have already started to the south of the Upper Brighton Road, Worthing. Access points will be constructed first to allow construction of a haul road along the cable route. This will be followed by trenching works to lay the ducting for the cables, and finally, the reinstatement of the ground. Work was scheduled to start by the end of last month on building the land-based substation in Twineham. Other areas such as Steyning and Henfield are affected. Chris Tomlinson, E.ON development manager for the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm said: “Throughout the Rampion project’s progress we’ve worked hard to keep the local community informed of our activities and over the last three months community events have been held at locations along the cable route in Lancing, Steyning, Henfield and Twineham, where we were pleased to be able to update over 500 local people of our construction plans.” Offshore work in the English Channel is starting in readiness for the first foundation installation in January. This will include clearing thousands of boulders on the seabed along the cable route and around each of the 116 foundation positions to allow safe and effective installation.

A Horsham firm is offering free fitness sessions for people living with cancer. My35 Health and Wellness Club in Piries Place, Horsham has teamed up with the Olive Tree Cancer Support Centre in Crawley to offer a free 12 week fitness course for anyone over the age of 18 affected by cancer. The centre says several recent studies have shown that there are clear benefits to undertaking physical exercise during and after treatment for cancer. Benefits can in-

clude improved physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Patients may also feel that they are regaining an element of control over their lives and are making a positive contribution to their own recovery to complement the treatments that they are undergoing, but over which they have little or no control. Although aware of the potential benefits of physical exercise, some cancer patients may be reluctant to join a gym when they are undergoing treatment, fearing that they will be intimidated by super fit people

Fitness programmes at My35 use the “Milon Circle” which provides a total body work out with six strength machines and two cardio units. Participants only need train for 35 minutes twice a week in order to see improvements in both strength and fitness. Support to stop smoking Bond and

Big date for super carers

his A team cut a dash for charity

Horsham residents are being encouraged to kick the smoking habit. They are being offered support from the Horsham District Wellbeing team as part of the national Stoptober campaign, where smokers from all over the country take up the challenge to quit smoking for the month of October and hopefully beyond. In 2012 there were 194 smoking related deaths in the Horsham district. During last year’s Stoptober campaign 67% of Horsham residents who accessed the Smokefree West Sussex service during the Stoptober campaign managed to quit smoking beyond the month of October. The Horsham District Wellbe-

ing team of the district council can also support you in your quit if you are worried about weight gain, or if you would like to discuss improving your overall health. Stoptober is a national campaign where smokers all over the country take up the challenge to quit smoking for 28 days. It is the most popular stop smoking challenge in West Sussex with more than 2500 people attempting to quit smoking during Stoptober last year. If you would like any support to help you stop smoking, please contact our Horsham District Wellbeing team on 01403 215111 or email the team at info@horshamdistrictwellbeing.org.uk or alternatively, for more information go to www.horshamdistrictwellbeing.org.uk

Super carers will know soon if they have won awards in the 2015 West Sussex Care Accolades, the county’s ‘Oscars’ for care workers. The awards recognise the hard work and dedication of people working in the care sector including care homes and care at home. One of the new categories in this year’s awards is the Unsung Hero Award. Nominations are closed and the winners will be announced at a ceremony at Arundel Wetland Centre this month. Winners receive a trophy and shopping vouchers. The awards, now in their sixth year, are organised by West Sussex Partners in Care and are supported by West Sussex County Council. Peter Catchpole, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for adults social care and health, said: “If you know a fantastic carer or a care organisation who make a

special effort to go above and beyond their normal day-to-day duties then now is the time to get nominating.” The ten award categories are care home worker, domiciliary care, registered manager; dementia care, for someone who has improved the quality of life of people with dementia, ancillary worker, care employer award, end of life care award, unsung hero, best practice, and chair’s award for someone who has overcome personal difficulties while still going above and beyond their normal day-to-day duties. Chairman of West Sussex Partners in Care, Rosemary Pavoni, said: "These awards are a great way to recognise the dedication, hard work and commitment that care workers across West Sussex show every day of the year. Care workers really do make a positive difference to people's lives.”

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT... We have been using the Resident and Clive G Hancocks subsequently, The District Post for Director advertising since the launch of the paper. Whilst it is difficult to quantify results, I would say that as a free paper, delivered around the whole Horsham District and picked up from selected places in the area, they are friendly to deal with, professional, very helpful with design and swift to print. Deadline is Wednesday for a Friday print and they have NEVER let us down! We use this paper exclusively. Because it is a free paper and the best known for that around the area, the circulation is getting bigger by the week/month and therefore I would recommend highly as THE advertising vehicle to use.

MP visits RAFA members Local schools in need of money Schools are struggling in West Sussex because they do not have enough money. That is the message MPs have sent strongly to the Government. West Sussex County Council cabinet member for education and skills Jeremy Hunt joined a delegation of MPs to express concerns over a serious lack of funding for schools in the county. The group, led by Mid Sussex MP Sir Nicholas Soames, met the Education Secretary Nicky Morgan MP, and the Education and Childcare Minister, Sam Gyimah MP, who is responsible for school funding, at the House of Commons. Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert, Worthing West MP Sir Peter Bottomley, Horsham MP Jeremy Quin, East Worthing & Shoreham MP Tim Loughton, Crawley MP Henry Smith and Nick Gibb, the Schools Minister

and MP for Bognor Regis & Littlehampton, were also present. Jeremy Hunt said: “I was very pleased to be able to join this meeting and I am grateful to the West Sussex MPs for raising this important issue. “West Sussex is the lowest funded county council and the fourth lowest funded local authority nationally. Schools in West Sussex are missing out on millions of pounds of government money because of an outdated funding system which is simply not fair. “I welcome the government’s current review of the funding formula and I look forward to hearing more details of how our schools will be more fairly funded in the near future.” Secondary headteachers in the county have also been lobbying regarding educational funding. Headteachers wrote to MPs earlier this year

to ask them to support the cause of fair funding for West Sussex students. After the meeting, West Sussex MPs said they were "encouraged" that West Sussex schools will receive fairer funding in future. They also said that the Secretary of State said that she was sympathetic to the concerns raised and recognised that West Sussex was unfairly funded. The Secretary of State confirmed that the Government was currently reviewing the funding formula as part of the Spending Review and it would come forward with proposals in due course. Mr Hunt added: “Alongside our MPs I will be keeping this issue firmly on the ministerial agenda. It is vital that the current outdated funding system is addressed in order to stop our schools being disadvantaged financially.”

‘Super hero mad’ sons inspire Dad to devise themed parties

Horsham dad of two Steve Goodwin has launched super hero themed birthday parties for children aged 4 to 6 years old, which includes not one – but three – super hero special guests. The party format is inspired by his sons’ passion for Captain America, Iron Man and Spider Man, and

includes six training ‘missions’ designed to develop specific super hero skills. A super hero provides the training, with a total of three different super heroes making an appearance during the two hour party timeframe. Designed to appeal to both boys and girls, it’s the super hero’s duty

to ensure everyone gets involved. Each child is awarded with a named certificate and badge at the end of the party, with an extra special treat for the birthday boy or girl too. “It’s really an excuse for me to relive my childhood”, said Steve, whose favourite super hero charac-

ter is Ice Man “because he’s super cool.” “The unique mix of games, music and prizes ensures the kids are entertained from start to finish. Plus parents are happy as their children have burnt up so much energy by the time they go home!” he explains. Steve is an under 7’s football

coach at Heron Way primary school, so he’s used to managing large groups of children. “I’d say it’s easier when I’m dressed as a super hero!” explains Steve. “The children are captivated by every one of the three super heroes, especially Spiderman and his ability to shoot sweets from his hands!”

May Pearson Entertainment Reporter

Famous around the world for being the longest running play in the history of British theatre, Agatha Christie's ‘The Mousetrap’ has en-

joyed success in London's West End for over half a century. Now into its third year of a 60th celebration tour, it has reached Horsham and is currently showing at The Capitol Theatre. I attended Monday's opening night. This was my first encounter with the phenomenal play and I must admit, I plan on making it the first

of many. For I am a fan of Poirot and Marple and The Mousetrap has all the hallmarks of a classic Christie. The entire play is set in the lobby of a secluded stately home. The rather naive proprietors, attempt to run it as a guest house, despite having no experience in the field. Welcoming a handful of paying guests, for the first time, the plot thickens, when

one of the party is found murdered. Heavy snow blocks any connection with the outside world and tension, suspicion, and a dash of comedy, is cleverly written into this whodunnit gem. From my seat in the stalls, I could see the theatre was close to full capacity. A quick glance at The Capitol's Web page tells me that this is the case for the forthcoming performances and it's easy to see why. The late, great Richard Attenborough and Sheila Sim, were original cast members, when the show opened in 1952. Mirroring their real life marital status, the couple played the roles of Giles and Mollie Ralston. Today, those roles are filled with the shoes of Alex Wadham and Esther McAuley, who, along with their co stars, bring to the stage a wealth of performance experience in theatre, film and television, to deliver the audience a highly tense tale, where suspicion is cast on every character, leaving one gripped, until the very end. In my humble opinion, The Mousetrap deserves its place as a London box office record breaker. For lovers of the murder mystery genre, it's a must see, but you had better reserve your ticket soon, if you want to catch it for yourself! Performances run until Saturday. For further information and to book, contact The Capitol Box Office website:www.thecapitolhorsham. com, or call: 01403 750220

Pizza Express is celebrating the launch of its exciting new look restaurant in Horsham. Located in East Street, this restaurant has been totally transformed and features artwork paying tribute to Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the major Romantic poets, who was born in Horsham. Each PizzaExpress restaurant is individually designed

– often using well known places, people or historical events from the area as the basis. The interior of the Horsham restaurant has a range of collage artworks inspired by Shelley’s poetry and his story. The artworks combine pieces of text and imagery that give a contemporary interpretation of his work.

The illustrious history of our Horsham store dates back to 1925, when Messrs. Scott & Sargeant opened their premises at 26 East Street. The business flourished and grew and allowed the shop to take over the adjoining property. In 2004, nearly 80 years later, Scott & Sargeant became a Steamer Trading shop when the owners

decided to retire. When we had finished the shop had grown into no.28, next door, and acquired wonderful new spaces for displaying fabulous kitchenware – and even a café. Today, our Horsham store is a real emporium, with a fantastic selection of everything for the kitchen and table spread out over 7,000 sq.ft.

Last chance to see the national no. 1 touring production in Horsham! Thursday 8 - Saturday 10 October 7.30pm (Sat matinee 2.30pm)

The extraordinary story of Handel’s favourite tenor, John Beard, will be told by internationally renowned tenor, Neil Jenkins, at St Mary’s House, Bramber, this Saturday. Neil will illustrate his talk by singing many of the arias and songs that made Beard the darling of Covent Garden and Drury Lane. The ‘Pavarotti’ of the time – Beard sang in the premières of all Handel’s oratorios, was a frequent interpreter of the Messiah solos, throughout England, and was the principal singer in John Gay’s perennially popular, The Beggar’s Opera. He rose from obscurity to fame, became manager of the Covent Garden English Opera

House and married into the aristocracy. King George III awarded him the title ‘Vocal Performer in Extraordinary to his Majesty’. It is both a compelling personal story and a fascinating insight into the life of two of London’s famous 18th century theatres. Neil Jenkins was a member of the famous vocal group 'The Kings Singers', and sang in the first concerts given by John Eliot Gardiner's ‘Monteverdi Choir’. He has worked with many of the world’s leading conductors, .and recorded over 60 discs of opera, oratorio and song. He runs his own international summer school – AIMS – every August, gives

a regular series of master classes, is a well-known Music Festival adjudicator, and sits on international singing juries. He will be accompanied at the piano by Gary Branch, who has worked with many established musicians and given recitals at many venues throughout the country. Neil will also be signing copies of his book on John Beard, entitled Handel and Garrick’s Favourite Tenor. The event takes place at St Mary’s House, Bramber, October 10 at 3pm. Tickets, which include tea and cake, are £25 and can be obtained by phone: 01903 816205, online via the website www.stmarysbramber.co.uk, or email info@stmarysbramber.co.uk.

Billingshurst Fireworks 17 Oct 2015

The Fireworks Season is rapidly approaching and once again Billingshurst looks to set to be first to go, on Saturday 17th October. The Organisers are often asked “why so early?” the simple reason is that they use local Fireworks Suppliers, Aurora Fireworks, to put on this display, and Aurora get terribly busy as 5th November approaches, but don’t want to let down their local event. Two benefits of an October date is that the weather is often a bit warmer and drier – no promises, just saying! The theme this year is Musicals, so come along and see how many

A Bar and BBQ will be available as will Tea and Coffee, but no alcohol to be brought to onto Jubilee Fields,

Entrance will cost the same as last year, £6 Adults, £5 Children (under 3 go free). Advance Tickets, at £1 less, are available from a variety of outlets in the Village, until the close of business on Friday 16th Oct. Planting bulbs with Tom Tom Halliburton, Manager at Jack Dunckley’s Birchfield Nursery explains the do’s and don’ts of planting bulbs.

When to plant If you want to fill your garden with colour next spring, plant bulbs from October to December, before the first frost. Daffodils, tulips, crocus, grape hyacinths and fritillarias are just some of the plants to choose from.

How to buy bulbs

Keep your plants flourishing with our Multipurpose Compost.

Most bulbs have a long dormant period, requiring little attention for much of the year. When buying bulbs check they’re healthy and as fresh as possible. Avoid any that are damaged, shrivelled or feel soft, and go for plump, firm bulbs. Try to plant within a week or they’ll start to sprout. When possible, check that the plants have been obtained from reliable growers, rather than from stock that has been collected from the wild.

Suitable for all round use. Available now at Birchfield Nursery 3 x 50 litre bags for only £12.00

How to plant Bulbs are some of the easiest garden plants to grow, needing only a welldrained soil and some sunshine. As a general rule, plant bulbs two to three times their own depth and around two bulb widths apart. It’s important to plant bulbs with their top facing upwards. If unsure, plant the bulb on its side. Replace the soil after planting, breaking down any large clumps and firm in gently, making sure there are no air spaces around the bulbs.

Bulbs in lawns Naturalise bulbs in lawns by taking a handful and dropping from waist height and planting where they land. In order to save time, try planting a large number of small bulbs by lifting a piece of turf and planting a group of bulbs in the soil.

Bulbs in pots When growing bulbs in a pot, pick a container that is the right size and will complement your chosen bulbs. If you are using a clay pot with a large drainage hole in the base, cover it with a piece of broken pot. Fill pots with general-purpose compost, mixed with a handful of horticultural grit to improve drainage. Water after planting.

Designing your garden on a budget - a case study Having your garden professionally designed doesn’t have to cost the earth and at Jack Dunckleys Landscape Design, flexibility is the key word. This lovely garden in Henfield was designed by Daniel Barber, Senior Gardener Designer at Jack Dunckley Landscape Design. The client’s budget was £20,000, so to keep on target all of the hard landscaping was undertaken by Jack Dunckley’s in house team, but, using Daniel’s planting scheme, the clients planted up the entire garden themselves. The whole project, apart from planting, took 5 weeks.

# "

Daniel Barber, Senior Garden Designer at Jack Dunckley’s Landscape Design, says, “This was a lovely project to work on, partly because the clients had a fair amount of experience and knowledge of plants from their previous garden. They had also set themselves a maximum budget of ÂŁ20,000 for all aspects of work, which is often helpful when starting out to produce a design.â€?

Daniel Barber

The garden prior to design and landscaping One year on, the garden is now fully established and is a very good example of a plan coming together. The project timetable was divided into six main stages. 1. The Client’s brief 2. The Garden Design 3. Layout and Planting Plan 4. Hard Landscaping and Turfing 5. The planting of the Herbaceous borders by the clients 6. Completion

Daniel uses a bespoke professional software called Vectorworks to visualise a garden design and subsequent planting plan. Daniel explains, “It allows you to create and import industry standard drawings to scale. If required, we can build a fully animated 3D model of the proposed garden. Being able to see what the garden looks like from any perspective is amazing. This process really helps when presenting a client with the concept and detail that either Jack or I have designed. Not so long ago I did all the designs by hand. These illustrations looked terrific but were very time consuming. One of the first major decisions after an initial discussion with a client is what can practically be done in the garden, given the access. One of the major hurdles to overcome with this project was the lack of access. All the excavation work, which was fairly extensive, was done by hand and the team were required to squeeze through a narrow side gate, to access the garden. They removed tonnes of soil and rubble, in order to produce the different levels and the flat lawn area. The next stage in this Henfield garden was to start the landscaping, which again had to be done by hand due to the lack of access. Shen Neville-Clarke, General Manager at Jack Dunckleys Landscape Design supervised the team. “To give you some idea of the task involved when building and landscaping the different levels and the small pond, we had to remove about 40 tons of earth and rubble from the site. Once all landscaping was completed, Stage 5 involved delivery of the shrubs and plants from Jack Dunckley’s Birchfield Nursery to the clients to enable them to plant everything over a period of about 5 months. Approximately a year later, the garden is well established and bearing the fruits of a well thought out project as you can see by the pictures on the right.

Come for a browse around the nursery and on your visit, enjoy a warming bowl of freshly made soup in our coffee shop. Open Thurs - Sunday 10.00am - 4.00pm Kidders Lane, Henfield, West Sussex BN5 9AB Tel: 01273 494058

Winner announced of The District Post 2015 Annual Garden Competition in collaboration with Jack Dunckley’s

We are delighted to announce that Sharon Hill has won the Jack Dunckley Landscape Design competition ‘Small Garden / Best Efficient use of Space’ category for her small garden in Horsham. Sharon has won £300 of Jack Dunckley Landscape Design vouchers to use in her garden.

Plant Hire Service

Transform your special event by adding topiary or exotic plantings to the setting. More cost effective than cut flowers, top quality plants and trees will give your venue a natural sophistication, all at a fraction of the cost of purchasing the plantings. At Jack Dunckley’s Birchfield Nursery, we offer a hire service on a range of top quality plants and will also deliver and collect. For more information, contact Tom Halliburton, Nursery Manager 01273 494058 / tom@jackdunckley.com

Open Thursday - Sunday at Birchfield Nursery – 10.00am - 4.00pm

Sharon’s garden consists of areas of paving with planted borders on two sides, two areas of artificial grass, a fountain and numerous containers. To create the feeling of more space, Sharon has positioned mirrors on the two boundary fences. She likes to maintain an evergreen look with splashes of colour. The framework comprises Fatsia japonica, many varieties of Euphorbia, Euonymus, Heuchera, Ferns and varieties of Hedera. Colour is provided in late spring with Peonies and Clematis followed by Hydrangeas, White Phlox and Michaelmas Daisies. Many of the plants are propagated in her greenhouse, along with a selection of vegetables. Sharon uses various containers planted with Hostas, Boxtrees, Bay trees, Pelargoniums and Fuchsias, which she moves to areas that need ‘cheering up’ from time to time.

Warm up with a bowl of homemade, hearty soup and a crusty roll for £3.50.

Jack Dunckley says: “Sharon’s entry is a great example of how to fill your garden if you’re short on space. I particularly like her clever use of containers and mirrors – it proves you can achieve a lot, even in a limited space.”

Hawks defeat Eagles in sensational season opener U13 Horsham Hawks 70 – 66 Haywards Heath Eagles

Bennett narrowed the score to a single point, (49-50), but the Eagles started the fourth quarter by extending their lead to 54-51; Horsham losing leading scorer Josh Tavolieri to injury. Horsham kept their composure with baskets from Antonio Lozzi, Josh Lea-Clayton and Fin Bennett to put the Hawks back in front 57-54 with six minutes to go. The Eagles then cut the lead to a single digit before Horsham exploded into action, Antonio Lozzi, Josh Lea-Clayton and Fin Bennett helping to open up a 66-58 lead with two minutes to play. Haywards Heath cut the lead to four points before a Harry Rose steal with ten seconds remaining sealed a hard fought 70-66 victory to Horsham. Coach David Clayton said, “This was a fantastic result not least because it demonstrated a growing level of maturity and toughness from our young players to be able to deliver such composure and intelligent decision making whilst under pressure, particularly in the final five minutes of a very tight game.” Statistics: Josh Tavolieri - 22, Josh Lea-Clayton -17, Fin Bennett - 10, Antonio Lozzi - 9, Meghan Stevens - 4,

Harry Rose – 4, Miguel - 2, Amy Willcox - 2, Charlotte Willcox, Oliver Brooker. U13 Horsham Hawks 51 – 54 U14 Sevenoaks Suns Forty eight hours after beating the Eagles Hawks were in action once more, this time against the Sevenoaks Suns. The friendly was organised to challenge the U13 Hawks against U14 National League opposition. The Hawks started well taking a shock 16-8 first quarter lead against the much bigger Suns. A closer second quarter left the Hawks still in front at the half (26-20) before the Suns dominated the third quarter 22-12. With just three minutes remaining the Hawks found themselves down 50-42 but continued to battle, closing the game to 51-54 with just eight seconds remaining. Both Josh Lea-Clayton and Antonio Lozzi managed to get three point shots off as time expired that failed to drop giving the Suns a narrow victory and winning the Hawks praise from the opposition. Statistics: Charlotte Willcox – 16, Josh Lea-Clayton – 15, Miguel Venturini – 8, Meghan Stevens – 4, Fin Bennett – 4, Antonio Lozzi – 4, Amy Willcox, Amber Hutchinson

East Grinstead Meads Inter. Team and were 2 – 0 down to the home side at half-time but re-organised for the second half and put in a much better display. Unfortunately the breakthrough failed to arrive and 2 – 0 was the final score. Man of the Match was Louis. Under 14 – Sparrows played Ashington Cougars in the League and it resulted in one of the best performances by the team as they ran out 11-0 winners. Man of the Match was Zac with 5 second half goals and a good all round performance. The other Goals came from Joe with 3 and 1 goal apiece from Andrew, Matt "J" and Alfie. Under 15 – An end to end game at The Needles saw Sparrows narrowly beat Greenway 5-4. Goals from Rhys and Josh were added to with a hat trick from man of the match George that sealed the team’s 3rd league win of the season. Under 16 – Sparrows opened the scoring away to Holmbury Wolves after six minutes with a faultless long range free kick from Nathan B. The second came fifteen minutes later when Mark S collected a cross from Charlie S to make it 2-0 at half time. The second half saw a turnaround in fortune as Holmbury picked up their first goal after ten minutes, closely followed by a penalty and four minutes later a further goal to give Holmbury a 3-2 lead. Despite valiant efforts Sparrows couldn’t grab an equaliser. Final score 3-2. Man of the Match was Lucas Owers. Under 14 Girls –Sparrows hosted a very strong Crawley Wasps team and who scored just before the break, leaving Sparrows 1 down. The team grew in confidence in the second half and narrowly missed out on an equaliser. Crawley scored their second to make the final score 2-0. Women’s Team - The first half was dominated by Sparrows playing with the wind but failing to score allowing Mile Oak to come into the game. Sparrows again had the better of things in the second half and eventually broke the deadlock with a tap in at the far post by Lucy. Sparrows are now up to third in the league.

Youth Basketball Dave Smith – Sports Editor The U13 Horsham Hawks began their new season in a well matched encounter against the Haywards Heath Eagles in a game of multiple lead changes. Josh Lea-Clayton and Josh Tavolieiri scored early to give the Hawks a narrow 8-6 advantage in a see-saw first quarter. Baskets from Miguel Venturini and Amy Willcox closed the first quarter with Horsham narrowly in front 20-16. In the second quarter a 12-2 run by the Eagles gave them a 32-28 lead before Horsham went on their own scoring streak to end the quarter with 10-2 run. Clinical finishing from Fin Bennett and Harry Rose put the Hawks in front 38-24 at the half. In the second half Josh Lea-Clayton and Josh Tavolieri continued to add to the score but Haywards Heath responded once again with a huge 14-2 run to take the lead 50-45. Horsham Sparrows U9 team Dave Smith – Sports Editor Horsham Ambassadors 1 – 9 Roffey Robins Athletic Robins Stormed back to winning ways with a decisive win in this U16 Division C encounter. Ambassadors scored first when George Williams punished an error in the Robins defence. However their lead was short lived as Joe Lamberty and Alex Barker (2) found the net before the break. Robins resumed their attacking rhythm in the second half and were rewarded with a further six goals scored by Alex Barker (2) Joe McGrane, Harry Lord, Joe Lamberty and Tom Law. As a result of this win Robins currently lie third in the table. Chesworth Rovers 11- 2 Crawley United A rampant Chesworth Rovers U-15 side racked up a decisive victory against Crawley United to maintain their 100% league record. Archie Talbot opened the scoring after five minutes, while Michael Murray (two),

Ben Harrison and Connor Jones also got on the score-sheet. Captain Tim Bennett took the plaudits, leading a superb team performance by scoring six, mostly from the 18-yard line and beyond. Crawley deservedly scored two goals of their own, but couldn’t contain the Rovers’. Eastbourne Borough Youth Red 2 4 Loxwood Youth Loxwood U15 survived a scare as they came from behind at half time to beat a useful Eastbourne Borough Youth side on the south coast. Loxwood took an early lead with a nice volley from Liam Lyons but Eastbourne dominated the rest of the period, scoring two goals in five minutes to leave the Magpies reeling. Loxwood upped a gear in the second half, and stylish strikes from Michael Murray, Ben Peppercorn and manof-the-match Lyons sealed a hardwon victory. Last ditch agony thwarts Horsham Ladies

Louisa Denman opened the scoring for Horsham Saturday October 3 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Surbiton Ladies 3 - 2 Horsham Ladies Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Two late goals frustratingly sunk Horsham after they had led for much of the game and were tantalisingly close to victory with a performance promising much for the rest of the season. Louisa Denman put Horsham ahead from a short corner deflection before Surbiton equalised. Then England Mixed’s Charlotte (CJ) White restored Horsham’s lead from a short corner, raising her team’s hopes of bringing home the points.

But, the hosts drew level with a strike in the last 10 minutes. Worse followed when Surbiton converted a short corner just before the final whistle to snatch the win. Elle Blakesley told the District Post: “It was an even, fast paced game with some skilful hockey. Surbiton are a young, fit side but we gave a very good account of ourselves. CJ was our player of the match – apart from her goal she played exceptionally well at right defence.” Tomorrow (Saturday Oct 10) Horsham ladies return home to take on Reading at Broadbridge Heath, 13.30. After winning all of their three games Surbiton top the table, while Reading, fresh from beating bottom club Havant last week, are third, just one point ahead of fifth placed Horsham.

Saturday October 3 – South League Premier Division 2 Woking 2 - 4 Horsham Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham began their new league season in the best possible way with an emphatic away win, despite being one down at the break after Woking had gone ahead from a short corner straight from the whistle. The second half was all Horsham with goals from Cirdec Atkinson, John Burroughs and, continuing his excellent form from the previous campaign, two from impressive young striker Jack Dean. Horsham conceded a late consolation goal but the result was never in doubt, former skipper Burroughs telling the District Post: “This was a good win for us – the first league game of the season is always tricky because nerves can play a big part. We didn’t play particularly well in the first half but we were the better side, as we proved after the restart. We were always in control and we know that we can play better but it was great to get the first game out of the way with three points. We’re very happy with that!” Tomorrow (Saturday Oct 10) in their first home game of the new season Horsham entertain West Hampstead at Broadbridge Heath (12 noon). Last Saturday the visitors beat Trojans 4-2.

Heath exit FA Vase in narrow defeat Saturday October 3 - FA Vase Second Round Qualifying Newhaven 3 - 2 Broadbridge Heath Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor Playing away at league leaders Newhaven in the FA Vase, Heath’s difficult task was added to when they had to start the match with 10 men: Jamal Sultan and Merv Bhujun were both held up in traffic and did not arrive until the 7th minute. With 11 players now on the pitch Heath took an early lead. A good run from Scott Weller followed by a 1:2 with Dan Sandell on the edge of the penalty area led to Weller placing a shot under Newhaven keeper Jake Buss. Four minutes later however the Dockers drew level with their first attack. A quick free kick caught the Heath defence napping allowing Lee Robinson in behind from where he crossed for Ebou Jallow to score from

close range. The home side took the lead in the 32nd minute when a fierce James Rhodes shot from 25 yards flew in off the underside of the crossbar, giving ‘keeper Michael Chester no chance. One minute later things got a whole lot worse for Heath when the lively Robinson ran through to score for 3-1. Heath responded well and was unfortunate to not pull a goal back when Ollie Moore crashed a shot from distance against the post and Tim Martin forced Buss into a superb save. The second half saw Newhaven come out on the front foot. Ryan Walton forced Chester into a good stop early on from a header and Scott Weller cleared off the goal line. After this early onslaught from the Dockers the remainder of the half belonged to Heath, with all the chances falling the way of Steve Painters side. Bhujun should have passed to Moore who would have had an open goal but chose to shoot at a tight angle and

Buss saved Stuart Chester’s powerful header at the second attempt. Just after the hour mark Heath finally got the goal that their play warranted. A quick throw-in found Moore in space down the right from where he crossed into Martin who hit it first time into the bottom left corner. Heath pressed for the equaliser and what looked a good shout for a penalty was waved away by the referee. Shots from Tiago Andrade, Weller and Moore all tested ‘keeper Buss and in the dying minutes Bhujun headed just over but the final whistle eventually signalled the end of Heath’s FA Vase exploits for this season. The two sides meet again tomorrow (Saturday Oct 10) when Newhaven travel to Broadbridge Heath for a SCFL Premier Division clash. Heath Team: M. Chester, Ozga (Sultan 60), Weller (Helsdown 80), S. Chester, Waddingham, Moore, Godfrey, Andrade, Martin, Bhujun, Sandell.

Saturday October 3 - FA Vase Second Round Qualifying Selsey 0 - 3 Horsham Given the huge margins of some of the Hornets recent victories it would have been natural to assume that another double figure scoreline was on the cards in this FA Vase cup tie. However Selsey, who sit second bottom of the division below that of Horsham, showed far more fight and determination than that displayed by some of the recent opposition that the Hornets have brushed aside. Despite having the greater possession Horsham only managed two efforts on their determined opponent’s goal in the first half hour; Joe Shelley and Darren Boswell both firing high and wide. The better football from Horsham continued to go without reward as the well organised Selsey defence played offside well and cut out the numerous through balls they had to deal with. Horsham continued to press and as the half came to a close the attempts on goal from Horsham increased although the end result was

still the same and the battling home side went in level at the break. The home side continued to frustrate Horsham in the second half and could have had a goal themselves when ‘keeper Williams misskicked a back pass that he caught to give a free kick in the area, the free kick was eventually cleared by a relieved Horsham defensive wall. Finally however the breakthrough came and as so often in such cases further goals were to follow. Kieran Pamment’s cross into the box was met by Charlie Farmer who put his header past home ‘keeper Warren Boyd. Provider turned scorer ten minutes later when Pamment placed his shot past Boyd from a Terry Dodd cut back. The match was finally settled in the 76th minute with a wonder strike from Joe Shelley. The Hornets skipper hit a half volley from 30 yards, over ‘keeper Boyd, to ensure Horsham’s place in the next round. The home side still refused to lie down and it took a last ditched tackle from Mark Knee to deny Jake Jackson. Chances then fell to both James Kilhams and Danny Harrington as the minutes ticked away. The final whistle confirmed Horsham’s progression in the competition but Selsey can walk away proud of the effort and fight they showed in keeping the recently rampant hornets down to three goals.

Horsham beat old foes Dartfordians in a thriller Saturday October 3 - London 2 South East Dartfordians 34 – 39 Horsham Rugby Dave Smith – Sports Editor A second successive victory, this time away to fellow promoted side Dartfordians, has seen Horsham climb to fourth in the table. Games against Dartfordians have always been keenly contested however this is the first time that the Green and Whites have managed to secure a win in Bexley for many years. Dartfordians started the more strongly of the two sides and a penalty from Mike Briggs gave the home side an early lead before a Tom Johnson penalty levelled at 3-3. The first try came on 9 minutes when Tom Johnson scored under the posts and then converted himself for 10 – 3 to Horsham. Dartfordians reduced the deficit with another Briggs penalty before Johnson replied with a penalty from a knock on. This was one of Johnson’s final actions of the match as he was replaced by Matt McCabe due to a hip injury. Dartfordians again rallied and following some good play captain Liam Bowmer crashed through the Horsham defence from 25 yards to score under the posts and level the scores at 13-13. Back came Horsham as the end to end play continued, this time

it was Josh Mills who crossed the line after an excellent individual run. Bell took over the kicking from the departed Johnson and made no mistake with the conversion. Again Dartfordians quickly responded; winger Tristan Demuth taking advantage of slack Horsham defence to score a try and narrow the score at 20-18 to Horsham at the break.

The first try came on 9 minutes when Tom Johnson scored under the posts and then converted himself for 10 - 3 Dartfordians came out the stronger and straight from the restart Horsham were penalised for killing the ball at the breakdown and the penalty was kicked by Briggs. A poor clearance kick then went straight to Dartfordians number 8 and home side man of the match Sam Allen who went on a strong run through the defensive line and put Connor Sutherland in under the posts. A further three home points after an offside left Horsham

trailing 31 – 20 and with a lot to do. The tide turned following tactical changes from the bench allowing Horsham to score three tries in a hectic seven minute spell. Horsham Man of the match, Richard Tredgett, scored in the corner and Tom Johnson, who was now back on the field, hoisted a perfectly weighted kick for Watts to catch and cross the line under the posts. The conversion gave Horsham a 32-31 lead. Minutes later they went further ahead when following a break from Johnny Ordidge Thompson accelerated away to score and following Bell’s conversion Horsham now had a 39-31 lead. Dartfordians completed the scoring with a final penalty but the game ended soon after in a memorable 39 – 34 Horsham victory. Horsham coach Nick Stocker said “Dartfordians are a good spirited side who tackle well and have great ability to slow the ball down at the breakdown. Unfortunately we allowed them to live with us due to our own errors. I was pleased that we didn’t panic when we went 11 points down.” Horsham’s next game is at home tomorrow (Saturday Oct 10) against Thanet Wanderers kick off at 2:00pm. Horsham Team: Bell; Crook, Whiting (Ordidge 60), Tom Johnson, Watts; James Johnson, Mills (McCabe 60); Brady, Grantham-Hill, Fairs (Harcus 55); Tredgett, Gaynor; Smith, Thompson, Gray.

YM`s Nick Sullivan takes on a Croydon defender Saturday October 3 - FA Vase Second Round Qualifying Croydon 2 – 1 Horsham YMCA 1 Football Tom Norris Horsham YMCA crashed out of their second cup competition in four days, after they were beaten

2-1 away at Southern Counties East League Croydon in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase on Saturday. A jaded looking YM were flat for large parts of an often fragmented affair that produced little in the way of quality during the entire ninety minutes. Trams’ striker Tristan Toney capitalised on a goalkeep-

ing error to open the scoring six minutes before the break, but a dominant display after the restart saw YM draw level thanks to Ash Dugdale’s diving header midway through the half. Croydon then reclaimed the lead against the run of play when front man Toney turned the ball in from close range to double his tally for the afternoon four minutes later, before the visitors were handed a last minute lifeline. Defender Alex Gathern was brought down right on the edge of the home box, but after referee Richard Butcher pointed to the spot, Nick Sullivan’s 96th minute penalty was saved by former YM goalkeeper Francis Ameyaw. Manager Peter Buckland commented: “We dominated the game and we lost it. That’s quite a strange experience for us. They played the long ball but were effective. They went from the ‘keeper to the last third and retained it reasonably well. We totally bossed possession, but sometimes the footballing Gods just aren’t shining on you and they certainly weren’t today. We are all disappointed because the Vase is a good competition that you can go far in. I’m not panicking. I don’t think it’s a case that the unbeaten run has gone and so now we’ll start losing games. I maintain one hundred percent that if we had scored that penalty, we would have gone home from here victorious today. We would have beaten them in extra time.” YM Team: Lockwood, D. Sullivan (Hibbert 81), Gathern, Doherty, Evans, Dugdale, Gedling, D. Brown, Schaaf (White 69), N. Sullivan, Wright. Unused subs: Hunter, Pollard, Fox.

Saturday October 3 – London 3 South East Pulborough 35 - 28 Cranbrook Pulborough’s enthusiastic supporters were treated to an entertaining game with good handling and the right result, their team recovering from a first half deficit to win convincingly despite a late Cranbrook surge.

Dan Paige’s long raking run enabled him to score in the corner before Cranbrook missed a straightforward penalty kick The visitors opened the scoring with a penalty straight from the off but Borough immediately responded - charging down a kick for Dan Bullock to score in the corner, Frazer Oliphant-Hope converting. The Kent men then benefited from a penalty, followed by a converted try, the scrum half skirting the ruck. A penalty apiece left Borough trailing 10-16 at the break.

But, two minutes after restarting Dan Paige’s long raking run enabled him to score in the corner before Cranbrook missed a seemingly straightforward penalty kick. Then Dan’s brother Ollie sold a double dummy and charged over, Frazer’s conversion reinstating Borough’s lead. With Cranbrook a man down and 5 gliders soaring above the pitch, two Borough penalties provided a 12 point cushion until a late Ben Miller try, converted off the posts, took them to an unassailable 35 points. Late inroads from the visitors encroaching on injury time made the victory appear closer than reality. Borough President Alex Steele said: “It was great for us to get a bonus point win but frustrating that they picked up a point (for finishing on a close losing margin).” Coach Clayton Saunders added: “We’ve started the season well with two wins out of three but it was a shame that we eased off at the end gifting them a point, putting them above us in the table.” Despite the defeat Cranbrook are top with 11 points on level pegging with Bromley, Borough are third on 10, narrowly shading Old Dunstonians. Tomorrow (Saturday Oct 10) Borough travel to joint highest point scorers Eastbourne, who put 62 past bottom club Burgess Hill last week. Pulborough Team: Blunden, Denman, Clay, Nicholls, Reed, Bullock, Leddra, Chenoweth, Paige, F. Oliphant-Hope, Akers, Burfiend, Hoey, Miller, Paige. Subs: Turner, G. Oliphant-Hope, Leddra.

Tuesday October 6 – Peter Bentley Cup Eastbourne Town 0 – 1 Horsham In what was always going to be a difficult fixture for Horsham – Eastbourne Town are one point and one place below them in the league and unbeaten in all competitions going into the match. The Hornets came away from the South Coast with a win and a place in the next round of the Peter Bentley Cup. Both teams made a number of changes to their line ups with Eastbourne Town having one eye on their FA Cup tie tomorrow at Didcot Town. Despite the wet and slippery surface caused by a pre kick off deluge both teams came out with the inten-

to deal with a 32nd minute corner resulting in the poor clearance falling to Ashley Jones to slam the ball past Town’s reserve ‘keeper Young. The second half proved to be much of the same with both sides matching each other and cancelling out

Ashley Jones celebrates his goal with Joe Shelley each other’s opportunities. In the 70th minute Town’s Ryan Paul was given a straight red card for a poor challenge on Kieran Pamment and that signalled the end of any hopes the home side had of getting back at Horsham.

On the increasingly difficult playing surface the Hornets safely saw out the remainder of the match to keep their own momentum going ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday Oct 10) visit of Chichester City to Gorings Mead for a league fixture.

Ollie Gill equalises for Loxwood Tuesday October 6 - Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup First Round Horsham YMCA 1 – 2 Loxwood Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter A 98th minute Mark Cave penalty helped in-form Loxwood come from behind to narrowly beat Horsham YMCA 2-1 in the first round of the Sussex Senior Challenge Cup on Tuesday evening. On a wet evening at Gorings Mead, Dave Brown’s coolly curled free kick found the far corner to give the hosts the lead seven minutes ahead of half time, but Loxwood quickly levelled as Ollie Gill fired home to make it 1-1 just before the break. The home side created the better chances during a plain second period, but the game’s late drama favoured the visitors as Cave confidently slammed home from the spot after Michael Wood was brought down in the box by Dan Evans, seven unexplainable minutes into added time. The loss marks YM’s third cup exit in less than a week, after crashing out of the FA Cup away at Aveley last

week and then losing in the FA Vase against Croydon last Saturday. The impressive Magpies, meanwhile, were recording their ninth win on the spin as they avenged August’s 3-1 league defeat to YM at Plaistow Road. Assistant YM manager, Dean Potter, commented: “I’ve got mixed emotions. I thought that was probably our best performance this season. We played some good football. It’s always disappointing conceding in the ninetieth minute, especially when we had the ball up the other end and one ball in behind undoes us, but that’s football. I don’t think that there should have been eight minutes of injury time, but you can go on and on about it and at the end of the day we’ve lost the game 2-1. I’m upbeat because I think the performances haven’t been there recently, but today we came out and we showed some great energy. I wouldn’t say that we bossed the whole game, but we played really well.” Horsham YM: Lockwood, Carden, Gathern, Pollard (Crane 60), Evans, Gedling, Dugdale, D. Brown, Hibbert (Hunter 63), White (D. Sullivan 63), Schaaf. Unused subs: Fox, Wood.

On a damp miserable evening the hardy souls who turned out at the Crowborough Community Stadium for this Sussex Cup match probably needed cheering up and this long drawn out thriller was not going to disappoint. The first half contained only one goal but the second half, extra time and subsequent penalties contained goals aplenty to keep the supporters buzzing. Heath went behind after a few minutes to an absolute screamer from Boro’s Josh Bidd who beat Heath ‘keeper Chester from 45 yards out. That is how it remained as the

wet and muddy teams went in for the break. Early on in the second half the hosts made it 2-0 when their captain Sam Carrington took advantage of a Heath defensive error. This signalled a fight back and as Heath came more

Amazingly Heath pulled it round and it fell to Adam Wicking to slot the winning penalty into the game Ollie Moore pulled one back in the 52nd minute. Four minutes later and it was 2-2 Tiago Andrade grabbing the equaliser. Then, with a minute remaining, Heath looked to have won it when Merve Bhujun gave them the lead

for the first time in the match. However right on the final whistle Heath ‘keeper Chester brought down Carrington and received a straight red. Carrington picked himself up and levelled to take the match to extra time. The influential ‘Boro skipper and striker Carrington again looked to have turned the match in his teams favour when he completed his hattrick in the first period of extra time that saw a bad injury to ‘Boro’s Josh Bidd. One more twist was to come in normal play however when Scott Weller popped up in the 120th minute to once again pull Heath level. And so to penalties - with Heath without their goalkeeper. When they went 2-0 down on penalties it looked all over but as with the match it seesawed and amazingly Heath pulled it round and it fell to Adam Wicking to slot the winning penalty and bring to an end an exciting, if not very wet, night of football.

Sunny day for Slinfold’s Alf Shrubb Race Athletics Dave Smith – Sports Editor The number of runners was slightly down this year for this year’s Alf Shrubb 5 Mile Memorial Cross Country Race due to the large number of races being held locally at the same time; competitors and spectators alike still enjoyed the Sunday morning sunshine and stunning Slinfold Countryside. The first runner home was local athlete Maxwell Dumbrell in a time of 27.04 followed by Simon Manning of South London Harriers and Paul

Cates from Eton Manor AC. The ladies race was won by Laura Manning of South London Harriers in a record time of 34.31 a second faster than the previous record. Laura was followed home by the previous record holder Lucinda Potten of Horsham Joggers and in third place was Joanna Terry. The organisers give thanks to Slinfold Cricket Club, Slinfold Cub Scouts and all the other sponsors and helpers for their support in putting the race on. The National Autistic Society and Chestnut Tree Children’s Hospice both received donations from the proceeds of the race.
