A popular restaurant owner has died at the age of 48 after fighting cancer. Customers of well-loved Mukul Choudhury wept when they heard the news that he had died from complications after unexpectedly developing pneumonia. Mr Choudhury, known as Jay, had been treated for cancer several years ago and appeared to have recovered. But he fell ill after returning home from a recent visit to London and died on October 2 in East Surrey Hospital, Redhill. More than 500 people said farewell to him at a service in Horsham last Saturday, and the chief mourners were his wife Munni and their three children, daughter Morreen, 25, son Tauheed , 19, and daughter Diyana 12. Prayers for him were held at Broadfield Masjid, Crawley after the Zuhr Salah lunchtime prayer session and burial took place at Hills Cemetery, Horsham, Mr Choudhury, of Brook Road, Horsham, was a partner in Horsham’s first curry house, the New Curry Centre in London Road, which he

took over with business partner and lifelong friend Rana Zaman from his grandfather in 1999. He was often seen there, covering for Mr Zaman’s holidays, and also ran the Haldi restaurant in Lintot Square, Southwater. He began working in the business as a teenager in Dorking, started his first restaurant in Brighton and helped run the Saxon Indian restaurant in Steyning. During his lifetime Mr Choudhury, known for his kindness, raised thousands of pounds for various charities, and was sending regular funds to Bangladesh to support nearly 20 families there. Mr Zaman, from Horsham, told the District Post: “He was a really good and well-loved character. People from all over the community were at his funeral, and there were over 500 people there.Customers were asking about him at the restaurant and crying when they were told he had died. “When I saw him in hospital he asked me to delay a trip to Bangladesh for a few days so he could cover for me when he came out. He never thought he was going to die, and neither did I. He was a very generous man. He would help any kind of person, of any colour and religion. If you called him at 2am he would help. His death has left such a hole in our lives.”

The fate of 95 new homes has led to a protest to the Government by district councillors. Horsham District Council originally rejected the proposal at Ifield because councillors agreed it broke planning policy. But their objections have been over-turned by a planning inspector, which means the scheme by Gladman Developments of Congeton, Cheshire, may go ahead. The district council has announced in response that it will not challenge the decision by the planning inspectorate. But it will write to the Government department concerned and some MPs to express its concern. Protestors claimed the scheme would spoil a rural area, possibly bring floods, and create traffic problems. The council said it had sought legal advice on what it called the very disappointing decision made on September

10, and had decided it would not be challenging it in the High Court. Cabinet Member for Planning and Development Cllr Claire Vickers said: “The Inspector chose to give the emerging local plan little weight compared to the demand for housing, and while we think this balance is wrong and not in keeping with the National Planning Policy Framework and local decision making, we accept that the Inspector can make that choice. “We believe we are correct in the considerable weight we, and several other Inspector’s since that decision, have given the Horsham District Planning Framework, and I am writing to the Planning Minister and local MPs to raise our concern.” The site is at Rusper Road, just outside the Crawley boundary, so it was decided by Horsham councillors in February.

Memorial service for modest champion of others

Dr Thwaites, (centre) campaigning with wife Linda (left)

The life of a well-loved doctor and campaigner will be celebrated at a memorial service next month. Dr Ian Thwaites, founder and chairman of Keep Southwater Green, died peacefully on September 30 after losing his battle with prostate cancer. He left a wife Linda, a son Guy, a daughter, Katy, and grandchildren. Born in 1943, and a doctor in Horsham for many years, Mr Thwaites was a member of Horsham Cricket Club. He also devoted a lot of time to the Keep Southwater Green campaign to limit the amount of new housing in Southwater, where he lived. The memorial service will be held at St. Mary’s Church, The Causeway, Horsham, on November 23 at 2pm, with a reception afterwards at Horsham Cricket Club. The Keep Southwater Green group said in a statement: “Ian established KSG in 2010, and remained our leader

until the beginning of this year. Although he decided to take a back seat then, in order to concentrate on his health issues, he continued to be involved, scrutinising documents, attending our meetings, and dispensing wisdom and humour in equal measure. “Ian was held in high esteem by everyone who knew him. “He was a man of integrity, great charm and humility; the epitome of an English gentleman. “He did far more for our community than most are aware of, working tirelessly and determinedly to battle against the tide of housebuilding that threatens to swamp our village. “Ian’s passion for, and unswerving commitment to, protecting Southwater and its countryside for the benefit of future generations means we are all the poorer for his passing. As a community group, we are

indebted to him. As individuals, we each feel it is a great privilege to have known such a genuinely lovely man.” Mr Thwaites was a talented cricketer, good enough to play for Sussex second team and winning a Cambridge Blue, and later playing for Horsham. A former flying doctor in South Africa, he worked at the Orchard surgery in Horsham from 1970 until 1990, when he became a musculoskeletal and sports physician from his home in Southwater. One of many tributes paid to him, from Judith Nesbitt and Guy Claxton, said: “Ian was the epitome of an English gentleman: decent, principled, public spirited. He cared deeply for his community and laboured to protect it. His charm, humour and intelligence touched every encounter. We are all the poorer for his passing. He was the modest champion in our midst.”

Kate’s family link in first marathon Farmer Kate Lywood is hoping for a rich harvest for a Horsham charity with a family connection in her first marathon. Kate has chosen the Swiss city of Lucerne for her baptism this weekend. Kate, 27, who manages her family business at Marshalls Farm, Kirdford, was inspired after she completed a half-marathon last year. She has chosen to raise money for Horsham-based charity Action Medical Research with her run. Kate said, "Apart from the excellent work that the charity does for babies and children, there is another reason I selected it.

Be wary of cheap alarms, locals warned People in West Sussex are being warned about buying substandard “fume” alarms on the internet. County trading standards officers found that eight of ten carbon monoxide or CO alarms tested failed British Standards safety tests. Trading Standards team manager Peter Aston said: “We are particularly concerned with the products we bought cheaply on- line and the inconsistency of their performance and would recommend that residents purchase alarms from reputable sources.” Mr Aston said of the eight failed alarms: “All but one went off eventually, and before CO levels became toxic. But the Standard requires more than this level of performance. Enquiries are continuing concerning the alarm that failed to go off as a second sample of the brand passed.” People who use wood burners, boilers, gas heaters and cookers are being urged to check their appliances are properly maintained and working or test CO alarms to alert them to the ‘silent and invisible killer’, which is colourless and does not smell. Anyone having have any consumer issues may call Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506 or using the on-line reporting form at www. westsussex.gov.uk/tsreport.

"Action Medical Research is a charity very close to the family as it was founded by former resident of Amberley, Duncan Guthrie - my stepdad's father." Kate caught the running bug last year, and competed successfully in a half-marathon at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, last year. That experience spurred her on to try a full marathon. "It's a long way to run and the first time I have undertaken a full marathon," she said, "but I hope that with enough training and the beautiful surroundings of Switzerland it is a fantastic opportunity to raise money for a great cause."

As part of her training, Kate spent a week in the Scottish Highlands, where running 20-plus miles over rugged terrain helped with fitness levels. The course of the Swiss City Marathon winds around the shores of Lac Lucerne. It takes place on October 25. Anyone who wants to sponsor Kate can do so at her fundraising page, www. action.org.uk/sponsor/katelywood. Action Medical Research is offering hope to the many thousands of families who are dealing with the trauma of a baby born too early, striving to support a child affected by disability, or facing the challenge of caring for a child with an incurable disease.

Purple Predator inspires Lights on earlier as clocks go back

Students propelled their “Purple Predator” to second place in a national contest of 800 competitors. The youngsters from the Weald School at Billingshurst scored their success in the finals of the Greenpower Car race held at Rockingham Speedway near Corby, Northamptonshire. Although the team did not repeat its title-winning success of 2014 it was delighted with its placing from such a huge field. In the contest, the Greenpower Trust encourages schools to build electric cars which are then driven by students and are powered by two car batteries. Qualifying races took place around the country, and Weald qualified at Goodwood.Students, along with parents, built two cars called “The Purple Predator”

and “The Black Bullet”. Cars qualify by competing the greatest distance over two oneand-a-half hour races. “The Purple Predator” was placed third in both races in the final, and because of the cars it beat, was placed second overall. Year 8 student Alistair Trollope, one of the drivers, said: “Driving the car is really exciting. Although the cars only travel at about 30 mph you are only a few centimetres off the ground. Our car goes very well and so there is a lot of overtaking involved”. Team manager Keith Russell said: “We were thrilled to come second. We were the reigning champions but were beaten by a worthy victor. Second out of 800 cars is still a fantastic achievement”.

Street lights will switch on an hour earlier from Sunday when the clocks go back. West Sussex County Council says that residents up early in the morning have questioned why street lights are not coming on while it is dark. It explains that all street lights in part-night areas come on according to Greenwich Mean Time, known as GMT. In winter, the lights switch on from dusk to the middle of the night and from 5.30am to dawn, although this might vary up to 20 minutes either way depending on the equipment. In summer when the clocks go forward to reflect British Summer Time, known as BST, the lights do not. So during October it appears the lights switch on an hour later. West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, John O'Brien said: “This is an issue which comes up every year. "The timings of the street lights are factory set and cannot be altered. “When the clocks go back near the end of the month everyone will notice the lights coming on earlier." “Part night” lighting in West Sussex runs from dusk to middle of the night and from 5.30am to dawn, and might vary by 20 minutes either way.

Most residential roads in West Sussex are lit to this lighting regime. “All- night” lighting in West Sussex runs from dusk to dawn. All town centres and main dis-

tributor roads are lit to this regime. All night lighting dims by 40% after the middle of the night until 5.30am. It then reverts to full lighting level until dawn.

Christ’s Hospital receives the royal treatment as language centre opens A star Spanish student declared his school’s £9 million language centre “magnifico” in any language as it was opened by a royal visitor. Rufus Jordana watched the Duke of Gloucester admire the language and resource centre at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham and said: “As a linguist, I was excited at the prospect of studying in the centre. I am so glad that the building was completed during my time at Christ’s Hospital as this has enabled me to benefit from these new facilities during my final year. “What instantly hit me was the size and space. There is a great feeling of openness within the building.” Rufus won the top prize for Spanish this year competing against other schools in the annual languages competition hosted by Horsham District Twinning Association. He also

studies Latin and is learning French. The Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, Mrs Susan Pyper, also attended the ceremony.

Housing the school’s ancient and modern language departments, IT suites and library, the building was completed for the start of term Housing the school’s ancient and modern language departments, IT suites and library, the building was

completed for the start of term last month. The project was funded by Christ’s Hospital through a campaign that began in 2013. Through the support of a young Old Blue, former pupil Jamie Arnell, whose major gift was a key factor in moving this project forward, it was completed on time and on budget. The building has been sympathetically designed to fit in amongst the School’s existing architecture which was designed at the end of the 19th century by Aston Webb and Ingress Bell. Christ’s Hospital moved from its original site in City of London to its purpose-built campus in Horsham in 1902. The Duke unveiled an inscribed foundation stone outside the building and the school’s band performed a march past.

A trip to China led to a young Horsham student winning a top photography award. Angel Droth-Vicens, has been awarded first prize in the ‘Changing China’ category of this year’s Young Photographer Competition. Angel, a Year 13 pupil at Christ’s Hospital school, took his winning photos during a trip to China in the summer and he included a short description of his China experience with his entry. He said: “During my visit to China, I saw the many faces of a country undergoing great changes. The old and the new sat side by side. Modern skyscrapers, massive roads and towering electricity pylons, plough through rolling green fields, and sit juxtaposed to ancient Buddhist temples.

“But it is not only the landscape which is evolving; there are also many cultural contrasts. “The young Chinese friends I made on the summer camp embody a highly adaptable and confident youth, both retaining Chinese values and fully embracing Western lifestyles. “The older generations are probably the last ones to ever know an untouched, traditional China.” Katherine Carruthers, director of the Confucius Institute at the Institute of Education at the University College of London, visited Christ’s Hospital to present Angel a with a certificate and £200 Amazon vouchers. His photos along with the runnersup entries are currently included in a gallery exhibition at the main Institute of Education building in London.

Students get a taste of crystals Have a go at being a

Chemistry students from Horsham spent a day experiencing life as Xray crystallographers. The youngsters visited the laboratory of Dr Matt Gold of the Department of Neuroscience, Physiology and Pharmacology at University College

London (UCL). X-ray crystallography is the study of protein structure at the atomic level. Knowledge of protein structure provides key information that allows for the design of therapeutic drugs. The majority of drugs used in mod-

ern medicine have been designed with information gleaned from X-ray crystallography data. After a lecture by Dr Gold on the history and development of X-ray crystallography the Collyers’s College students moved to the wet labs to set up crystal trials in an attempt to grow protein crystals for analysis. Protein crystals can be extremely tricky to grow, but all students were successful in this task and achieved crystals of such high quality that they could have been used for research purposes. The students were later given the opportunity to freeze their crystals using liquid nitrogen, have a tour of the X-ray generator at neighbouring Birkbeck College, followed by a session focusing on the computer modelling of protein-drug complexes.

Youngsters entertain in good cause Pupils at Farlington School, Horsham, invited parents and staff for a coffee to help the fight against cancer. firefighter this Saturday

Potential firefighters get the chance to “have a go” at a session in Horsham on Saturday. It is part of a scheme to attract more part-time fire and rescue crews across West Sussex. Crews at Horsham Fire Station in Hurst Road will stage the session from 10am. The public will be able to have a go at some firefighting activities and use a range of equipment in a safe environment. There will also be an opportunity to find out more about the physical and written entry tests, look around a busy fire station and chat to current retained firefighters about their role. Retained firefighters are men and women who combine their day jobs or duties with being "on call" for the fire service, ready to respond to

emergencies when they are needed. They receive regular training to equip them with the skills to deal with fires, road traffic accidents and a wide range of other emergencies. They also play an important role in community engagement activities. Retained firefighters receive a yearly retaining fee as well as additional payments for any incidents or community safety events they attend. Deputy Chief Fire Officer Lee Neal, who began his career as a retained firefighter, said: “The have-a-goday will be very relaxed and informal. We’re holding the event in Horsham but we are hoping to see people from right across West Sussex. Even if you have never considered being a retained firefighter before, if you’re up for a challenge, come along and see if you’ve got what it takes.”

War vets needed to tell their story

War veterans are being sought for a project to record their experiences. Military Voices Past and Present is run by West Sussex County Council library service and is expected to take three years. Military veterans are needed who are willing to be interviewed about their wartime experiences, together with volunteers to conduct the interviews. What the council describes as a “ground-breaking oral history project” aims to compare the experiences and sacrifices made by Great War combatants with those made by modern day veterans. This has been made possible by grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund and from the Ministry of Defence’s Community Covenant Fund. The key source is the Peter Baker Collection, comprising 32 interviews with 1914-18 veterans recorded over 30 years ago, three of them from the Royal Sussex Regiment. Peter has been teaching History at Our Lady of Sion School for almost 30 years and is now semi-retired. He was inspired to make the recordings because of his own interest in the First World War and also to use in the classroom, a groundbreaking initiative from the 1980s. Creating a new collection of interviews with current military veterans is another key aim of the project. The council hopes to find veterans, living in West Sussex, who experienced any conflict from 1939-45 to the recent wars in the Gulf and Afghanistan. Their experiences and views will then be analysed and compared with those of their First World War predecessors. All material will be digitised, preserved and significant extracts made freely available online. David Barling, cabinet Member for residents’ services, said: “We plan to work with at least 25 volunteers who will be taught new skills and take on a wide range of tasks, including interviewing, historical research, writing and digitisation.” The project will run from November 2015 to November 2018 and results will include a travelling display, new webpages with audio clips and an inventive educational programme involving

local schools. A book of the interviews will be supplied free to all West Sussex schools, public libraries, colleges, universities and veteran associations. Key partners in the scheme are the Royal British Legion, Royal Sussex Regimental Association and Queen Alexandra Hospital Home in Worthing. For further information please contact Alison Musk on 033022 22399 or email alison.musk@westsussex.gov.

Italian Master Chef comes to Horsham Christine Doyle Restaurant Review Chef and culinary advisor Salvatore Fararra, opens La Piazzetta as the second notch on Dino belt. Dino is already the successful owner of La Piazzetta Restaurant in Petersfield - voted the towns best Italian Restaurant 2014 and winning 'Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence'

Horsham is not short of Italian eateries, however the selective menu choices and presentation of dishes all cooked in order demonstrates the personal touch here Dino and Salvatore have worked together for many years as colleagues and business partners, together they believe in the simple concept of fresh Italian food, from bread and pasta to the delicious desserts are made on the premises from fresh local produce. Having been invited to the opening

last Thursday, I was privileged to taste a selection from the menu, and I must confess to being prisoner to Salvatore the next day when popping in to say thanks for the evening, both Dino and I were given desert dishes one by one, the only thing from the freezer was the delicious italian ice cream, everything was made from scratch, perhaps a dainty taste of each dish to savor, however this was not the case as it was all too delicious - the chocolate cake was my winner, bitter and light with a sweeter sauce, yum! Horsham is not short of Italian eateries, however the selective menu choices and presentation of dishes all cooked to order, demonstrates the personal touch here. Pizzas are light, not overloaded and tasted Italian. The menu offers a fantastic selection of fish, meat, pasta and mouth watering deserts. Dino prides his success on best food at the best price and you can not argue that, set dinner menus at £13.50 for 2 courses, 3 for £15.50. Its no wonder to his 8 years of popularity with the locals at Petersfield. In true Italian family life, lets not forget the children, always welcome and have their own special menu. Its noticeable from the outset the wonderful Italian family welcome you receive, I already feel part of it and cant wait to take my family to dine there. Please visit www.italian-restauranthorsham.co.uk for menus and reservations.

Club in home hunt to avoid closure Trick or Treat returns to Horsham Town Centre As part of Horsham’s Autumn Half Term festivities, Horsham Rotary Club supported by Horsham District Council, are once again bringing back the old custom of Trick or Treating to the Town Centre over the Half Term Holiday from Saturday October 24th until Sunday November 1st. Accompanied pre-teenage Children are invited to visit participating shops where they will draw Halloween Cards to discover whether they have won a treat or will have to perform a ‘trick’. Naturally the tricks are not too nasty or onerous. The event keeps the children occupied for a few hours and, as well as being a A clay pigeon shooting club that has raised tens of thousands of pounds for charity faces closure after nearly 50 years after losing its grounds. The Countryman Gun Club near Horsham says it faces shutdown if new grounds cannot be found. The 100-strong club has given money to charities such as The Chestnut Tree House and St. Catherine’s Hospice, but it can longer continue at the Knepp Estate, near Shipley. With scoring records dating back to 1971, the club hosts two open shoots each year, six skeet and 12 sporting mornings plus one have-a-go shoot to complete the season. It has also set up and run the clay shooting at the

annual West Grinstead and Ploughing Match for many years. Membership is drawn from all ages from Horsham to Worthing. The non-profit club says it offers “very low cost” shooting thanks to a dedicated group of shooters. Club chairman David Meadows said: “After 46 years on the Knepp Estate our members are desperately saddened by the decision which puts the future of the club in serious jeopardy. Some of the original members are still shooting today and some, unfortunately, are treasured memories. “Newer members, especially the younger generation, will be sadly unable to progress with this countryside

tradition. “At our dinner in February, at the Countryman Inn, we will be presenting 43 Trophies perhaps for the last time. “We now have to face the future and search for another site close to our area of Shipley. We must thank Sir Charles Burrell for his support since the stewardship of the Knepp Estate passed to him from Sir Walter Burrell in 1985.” Mr Meadows may be contacted 01403 741379 or d.meadows377@ btinternet.com Pictured are original member Barry Anscombe (left) with youngster Daniel Lewis.

Get ready for the big seed swap Gardening fans are invited to take part in a seed swap. First of all they are being reminded that this is the time of year to save any vegetable or flower seed before everything dies back. The swap session will take place at Horsham’s annual Seedy Saturday on February 20 from 10am to 2pm at the Friends Meeting House in Worthing Road. Maggie Weir-Wilson of community environment group Transition, which is organising the swap said: “ If you have saved your seed you need to keep it dry and cold, then pop into a small envelope, labelled with what it is, variety if possible, when and where collected. “You will then be able to swap this, packet for packet, for some of the tempting and unusual varie-

ties other people have brought. Of course you can pick up seeds for a donation as well.”

The swap session will take place on February 20 from 10am to 2pm Transition says there are several good reasons for taking part. They include the fact that only those seeds registered on the National List, now combined with the EU lists, are able to be sold legally and many old varieties have not been included, or not identified, or just overlooked. New varieties are more profitable

for the seed companies than the old, and the new F1 hybrids do not grow true to type. Transition says keeping a good genetic variety is really important for resilience to disease. If varieties are too genetically similar they can all get wiped out by pests or diseases. Genetic variety is also really important for maintaining and increasing biodiversity. Think of all the butterflies, moths, insects and now the bees, which are struggling for survival and disappearing from our gardens. They need a variety of food sources and habitat, we can help. For any queries contact Maggie Weir-Wilson, Transition Horsham, 07891 818808 or check out website www.transitionhorsham.org.uk for more information.

We have been using the Resident and Clive G Hancocks subsequently, The District Post for Director advertising since the launch of the paper. Whilst it is difficult to quantify results, I would say that as a free paper, delivered around the whole Horsham District and picked up from selected places in the area, they are friendly to deal with, professional, very helpful with design and swift to print. Deadline is Wednesday for a Friday print and they have NEVER let us down! We use this paper exclusively. Because it is a free paper and the best known for that around the area, the circulation is getting bigger by the week/month and therefore I would recommend highly as THE advertising vehicle to use.

Horsham company amongst finalists Superb location for in 2015 KalliKids Best Awards offices on business park

Woods For Learning has been shortlisted in the Best Time Out/Holiday Club category of the National KalliKids Best Awards. The Horsham based company, who specialise in encouraging and motivating children through outdoor experiences, have been shortlisted, along with Apollo Lasertag, in Burgess Hill, and Barracudas Activity Camps, in Nottingham, for the respected award.

Gary Marlow, Director of Woods For Learning, said: “It is a great honour to make the final, especially as we have only been going a short while. To have recognition for the work we do, cannot be underestimated. Hopefully it shows that what we offer, is something children enjoy coming to, with the parents understanding that learning can take place.” Woods For Learning was set up 9 months ago and already has 1500

participants. These include children from holiday clubs, schools, family centres, nurseries, disability groups and families. “We are a community interest company, so all our profits are reinvested into the community. As part of this we offer free sessions to different groups in the area,” said Mr Marlow. The awards, which recognise businesses and providers for family and children, were launched by KalliKids two years ago. KalliKids is the UK’s stamp tick of approval and accreditation service for children’s activities and services. To earn accreditation, providers have to be referenced, and recommended, by families. Proof of qualifications, training and other documentation must be provided. Karen Bach, KalliKids Founder, said: “Our aim is to arm families with trusted information to help inspire young people to get involved in a wide range of activities." To be nominated in one of the 18 categories, each company had to have a certain number of recommendations on the KalliKids’ website. Out of 1200 providers, 190 were nominated. The finalists are those with the most votes in each category. For more information, visit www. KalliKids.co.uk

Head of commercial agency, Andrew Algar, describes the unit: “The open plan unit extends to just under 900 square foot, and is extremely well presented with Cat II lighting, storage heating, a kitchenette and toilets so is completely self-contained. “The business park itself is one of the smartest around with electric

gated entrance and site CCTV, all set in an attractive courtyard environment within Newhouse Farm and with landscaped grounds and views over open countryside.” Road communications are excellent with the A264 nearby linking to the A23/M23 less than six miles away. photographers, Sims Images Limited, the business has a pool of talented local photographers and their mission is to provide beautiful local photos which are unique, but also capture the essence of Horsham and

its community. Every Day Art offers a choice from an extensive range of local images, or, on a more personal note, a client can request a specific shoot, to their exact specification. Images can

be provided on canvas, in frames, as JPG files for websites or in a wide range of other printed options - all at wholesale prices, offering an affordable service for local businesses and families alike. Parent company, Sims Images, has over 30 years’ experience of providing the highest quality images for blue chip companies worldwide. They also specialise in providing commercial images for events and launches and have a reputation second to none. With a passion for the unique, Managing Director, Georgia Fox, explains the vision behind this new venture: “I’m really excited about the launch of Every Day Art. Our team have worked together for years and our strengths lie in creating images that are unique and exceptionally good quality. But as individuals, all of us enjoy a real sense of being part of our local community where we live and work and as such, we realised we have something really special to offer others. I am well aware how important it is for a business to make a really good first impression and our artwork can help with that. And because we’re part of the bigger Sims Images organisation, we can make it really affordable too.” To view some of the Every Day Art Images, visit: www.everydayart. co.uk or contact: everydayart@simsimages.co.uk.

Film crew begin filming documentary

West Sussex production company, Fact Not Fiction Films, began filming their latest production at Gatwick Aviation Museum on Saturday, October 10. Aerotoxic is a feature length documentary that will be targeted at the Academy Awards. It follows Pilot Captain Tristan Loraine on his 15- year campaign to expose a dangerous health and flight safety issue that affects the air you breathe.

Fact Not Fiction Films Production Team Member, Beth Moran said: “The first day of shooting can sometimes be the hardest. The film industry can be very unpredictable, but everything went smoothly. I think it’s a good sign for things to come.” While a number of scenes for the film are going to be shot internationally, Aerotoxic began production in Sussex, at the Gatwick Avia-

tion Museum. The Fact Not Fiction Films team used the location to conduct an interview with Dr Susan Michaelis who is the world expert on the contaminated air issue. Dr Michaelis is also the head of research for the Global Cabin Air Quality Executive (GCAQE), an organisation that represents over 750,000 workers around the world. Aerotoxic Director, Tristan Loraine said: “We are delighted that Dr Michaelis would allow us to interview her. She is one of the leading experts on aviation cabin air quality and currently holds a PhD on the subject. “We are very fortunate that she was willing to help support our work.” Dr Michaelis is also well known in Sussex for her charity work. At the beginning of this month she was part of a team who raised over £850 for Macmillan Cancer Support by running a charity coffee morning at Sedgwick Park House. Aerotoxic is currently scheduled for completion by December 2016. For more information or if you would like to help support the documentary, visit Aerotoxicfilm.com

Hoover's salute to Sinatra in Crawley 100 years since the birth of Frank Sinatra, Grammy-nominated Louis Hoover celebrates the life and music of the legend with, Sinatra 100 - The Centennial Gala World Tour. Star of the West End Smash Hit show ‘The Rat Pack’ and Grammy nominated for his solo album And This Is Me, now Louis, along with his 17 piece orchestra, will bring an atmospheric spectacle reminiscent of Sinatra’s finest years to audiences at The Hawth this November. “ L o u i s brought back memories of great times I spent with Ol’ Blue Eyes. I’m sure if Frank had heard him

sing he’d have said 'hey great pipes kid!'” - Sir Roger Moore. Louis’ dream began at 17, when he found himself stunned and overwhelmed by Sinatra’s performance at the Royal Albert Hall. Leaving the auditorium, he knew that he had a mountain to climb to fulfil his dream of one day singing Sinatra’s excellent songs. 28 years later, Louis has fulfilled this dream, by performing in amazing venues worldwide, including the Royal Albert Hall, where, in 2012, he received a ten minute standing ovation for his thrilling Salute To Sinatra show. Louis is no impersonator of Frank Sinatra, he does not attempt

to fool his audience through disguise. Louis uses Sinatra’s world famous songs, his smooth voice and his enchanting band, to create an atmosphere that transports his audience

Louis uses Sinatra’s world-famous songs, his smooth voice and his enchanting band, to create an atmosphere that transports his audience to a time where swing and big band reigned to a time where swing and big band music reigned and Sinatra’s dreamy baritone soothed those missing their loved ones at war. See the woods from the Quiet and stylish house in a delightful, quiet area trees at Billingshurst

Rydon Homes have been helping purchasers see the wood from the trees at their desirable new development coming soon to Billingshurst, where the homes have been astutely designed to fit in with their wooded surroundings. Aptly named ‘ Woodland Place’, this will be a unique collection of two, three, four and five bedroom quality family homes harnessing traditional architectural features to help the properties to fit in comfortably with this rural setting. This is in contrast to the practical and modern specifications within. This distinctive mix of history and modernity has seen huge appeal from buyers with 25% of the homes reserving off-plan in short succession. Stephanie Briggs for Rydon Homes comments: ”The design of the homes themselves has proven a huge draw for buyers who have been enticed by attractive period features such as tile hung walls and gabled porches. The use of natural materials within the construction will also help the homes to blend seamlessly with their environment, nestling in ancient woodland.“ She continues: “In sharp con-

trast to this though, the interiors of the homes will offer all that’s best about contemporary living, with practical and thoughtful layouts, light and airy rooms, and all the modern conveniences one would expect from a new home. This heady combination has helped 25% of the homes reserve off-plan. I would therefore encourage potential buyers seeking an attractive traditionally-designed home to contact us at the earliest opportunity in order to secure the plot of their choosing.” Despite its rural setting, Woodland Place is just a five-minute walk from the mainline station with direct connections into London Victoria. It is also perfectly placed to enjoy the South Downs National Park and a host of countryside pursuits on the doorstep. Built for the needs of modern living, each of the homes is well proportioned with generous living spaces. The properties also benefit from fully-fitted designer kitchens and opulent bathrooms and offer private parking and generous gardens. For more information and to view the sales particulars please contact Fowlers estate agents in Billingshurst on 01403 786787.

Trojan horseplay thwarts Horsham Saturday October 17 – South League Premier Div. 2 Trojans Men 1 - 1 Horsham Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter After drawing against Trojans at Eastleigh Horsham forfeited their top of the table spot to London Edwardians, winners of all three of their opening games of the season. Trojans came out really aggressively

but despite Horsham having most of the possession – and five short corners - neither side had scored by half time. In the second half Horsham changed their short corner routine and Cirdec Atkinson promptly found the net, but Trojans equalised within three minutes. Then the Trojans keeper up-ended Cirdec giving Horsham a penalty but after this was missed the scores finished level on one apiece. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “In total we

had ten short corners and they had two yet we scored a goal each. Heaven knows how we didn’t score - we had ten shots on goal and their keeper kept getting in the way. Some days the ball just doesn’t run for you but we’d rather get those days out of the way early in the season whilst everything is still in our hands.” Tomorrow (Saturday Oct 24) Horsham entertain Tulse Hill & Dulwich. The visitors - are 5th in the table with one win and two draws from three starts.

Horsham battle back strongly Gymnast Izzy Hilliard represents England to draw against Southgate

Steph Dent scored Horsham’s equaliser Saturday October 17 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Div. 1 Southgate Ladies 2 - 2 Horsham Ladies

Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham remain fourth with eight points after battling back to draw at Southgate’s Snakes Lane ven-

ue after going two goals down. Southgate also have eight points, but with a game in hand. The hosts went ahead with a reverse stick shot from the top of the D and increased their lead with a deflection from a short corner. But Sam Stares reduced the deficit with a back hander from a short corner, Horsham trailing 2-1 at the break. Horsham came back strongly after the re-start, holding Southgate at bay until Steph Dent equalised with a rebound shot on the half volley following a short corner. Elle Blakesley told the District Post: “Southgate had the upper hand in the first half with Horsham making some silly mistakes but we upped the tempo hugely in the second half, showing our passion for a win. Yvonne Grout in centre defence was our Player of the Match because she defended solidly with great distribution, making the right decisions and passing the ball on very well.” Tomorrow (Saturday Oct 24) Horsham ladies are playing at home against Woking (fifth after beating Havant last week, their second win from five starts). Surbiton top the table with 13 points.

Scarlett Tidy, England’s Isobel Hilliard and Evie Lamb Gymnastics Dave Smith – Sports Editor Horsham Gymnastics Centre Artistic Squad had three gymnasts - Izzy Hilliard, Scarlett Tidy and Evie Lamb - competing at the Rushmoor Rosebowl International last weekend. Horsham’s trio of gymnasts recorded excellent results in a competition that included teams from Spain, England and the Great Britain National Squad. Izzy Hilliard competed in her full

England colours for the first time while making her England debut at this competition. Izzy’s England team finished third overall and she finished an excellent 19th individually competing against very strong and experienced International gymnasts. She also qualified for the floor final where she finished in 10th place. At the same competition Horsham’s Scarlett Tidy and Evie Lamb competed for the Sussex County team that earned 4th place in the Regional County section.

Scaling and timing with Horsham Cycling cycling

Martin Read - SportsReporter

The weekend after returning from their annual trip to Belgium Horsham Cycling experienced something very different – the Forbes Hill Climb Competition, named after Competitions Secretary and race starter Stewart Forbes, co-founder of HC. Denbies Wine Estate kindly provided the terrain again, 15 riders competing with many more fresh from Sunday morning rides officiating and offering encouragement. There was a strong battle for the coveted trophy, combatants being timed to 100th of a second amid much hearty shouting and cheering. Neil Clarke came in first – his sixth

victory in this competition – in 5 minutes 32.2 seconds with Matt Andrews a close second and Stephen Copeland third. Sabina Hickmet led the ladies home in 8.09.1 – 30 seconds faster than her winning time last year. On completion of the Hill Climb this season’s points were tallied with Greg Turner winning the Peter Delve Points Trophy to add to his Scratch and 25 Trophy successes, ahead of Jon Fry and Tim Peters. Rebecca O’Hara took the ladies’ award from Sabina Hickmet (2nd) with the ladies Scratch Trophy winner Angela Radden – Rutt third. Time Trial successes have also been achieved for Tim Peters as winner of the Ian Hiscock Handicap Trophy and Tony Brown in the Veterans competition. On the following Sunday (October 18) HC staged their Autumn Reliability Trial with a choice of three rides

ranging from 33 miles to the 63 mile Goodwood Gallop in a time chosen by the rider. Competitors navigated to a set destination and had to be back at Forest School – event HQ – to complete the challenge by returning within 10 minutes either side of their nominated time. 63 riders participated, 51 from Horsham Cycling, the remainder coming from four other cycling clubs - Cranleigh, Crawley, Dulwich and South Hams. 30 riders chose the Goodwood route, while the Wealden intermediate ride (45 miles) attracted 24 and 9 competed on the Hurstpierpoint trip. Members are looking forward to the Christmas dinner and awards presentation on December 10. Meanwhile a variety of rides from the Carfax will continue every Sunday morning. Horsham YMCA returned to winning ways last Saturday, as they eased to a comfortable 5-1 Premier Division victory at home to Eastbourne United AFC. Despite playing over half the game with ten men following defender Dean Carden’s 37th-minute red card, a hard working YM proved too strong for United and stopped the rot following four straight defeats. Skipper Ashley Dugdale’s early header was cancelled out by visitors’ striker Liam Painter midway through the first half, before Carden was dismissed for raising a hand in the face of United midfielder Toby Clifford. Dean Wright restored YM’s lead after capitalising on a defensive error four minutes before the break, and the home side then dominated after the restart. Dave Brown curled home a twenty-yard free kick eleven minutes into the second period, debutant Luke Donaldson headed in after his initial shot was saved, before Sam Schaaf poked home from close range in added time to round off a resounding win. Manager Peter Buckland commented: “Going down to ten men often galvanizes a team. It doesn’t make a phenomenal amount of difference to your shape if you all work five percent harder. That makes up for the man you’re missing. With the sending off at 1-1, I thought that our bad luck was continuing, but the players really did us proud all over the pitch. The four defeats are a monkey off our back. If we had chiselled out a 2-2 draw with ten men we might have been excused for thinking we had done well, but we weren’t going to accept that. We didn’t want a point. We switched to 4-4-1 and I promised the players at half time that if we worked hard we would win the game 4-1 or 5-1.

Dave Smith - Sports Editor

Tuesday October 20 - SCFA RUR Charity Cup Round 2 Haywards Heath 3 – 1 Horsham (AET) Horsham’s participation in the RUR Cup came to an end for this season on Tuesday night as they were knocked out by Division 1 side Haywards Heath. Two extra time goals from the home side were enough to make the

Hornets the second Premier League team to exit at the hands of Haywards Heath this season; Loxwood being their victims in the previous round. Although it was not the strongest Hornets side possible it certainly was not the weakest and despite some very poor refereeing decisions Dom Di Paola will be disappointed his team were unable to overcome a battling and physical Heath team. Horsham had a very early scare when Williams was called upon to produce a superb save from a free kick. Evan Archibald and Ashley Jones had decent chances that went begging but the half turned into a

New signing Nathan Crabb had a good game

scrappy affair as the host’s hard working midfield stifled any attempts Horsham made to grab a hold of the game. The referee made the first of many controversial calls when he waved away a blatant hand ball by Heath in their penalty area, leaving things as a goalless stalemate at the break. Coming out for the second period Horsham looked a little livelier and were rewarded with a goal in the 58th minute. Alex Duncan put in a superb cross that was met by a diving header from Archibald that left home ‘keeper Simon Lehkyt with no chance.

Any thoughts of a goal spree following the opener did not materialise and on 72 minutes the home side were level. Williams saved a free kick but the rebound was followed up by Heath’s Freddie Barker who had the simple job of finding the net. Some nasty challenges went unpunished by the referee who seemed more interested in waving his yellow card for dissent. Extra time followed and as so often happens it was an old boy who inflicted the damage. Ex Hornet Max Miller hit a low drive from the edge of the area that nestled into the net past Williams to give the home side

the lead with 14 minutes of extra time played. Worse was to follow when 11 minutes later a 40 yard effort from Carl Dunk flew into the Hornets net; if he meant it then it was a goal worthy of winning any match. Back to league action on Saturday (Oct 24) when Horsham host AFC Uckfield Town when Di Paola will be looking to get back to winning ways after two consecutive defeats. Horsham Team: Williams, Duncan, Lewis, Keehan, Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Hunt, Dodd, Pamment, Archibald. Subs: Chadwick, Hopkinson, Crabb.

Horsham YMCA recorded their second Premier Division win in four days with an impressive 2-1 victory away at Arundel on Tuesday evening. Defender Dan Pollard’s tenth minute volley gave the visitors a deserved lead at the break, following a dominant first half display. Injuries to Dean Carden and Sam Schaaf resulted in forced YM changes at half time, after which the Mullets posed a much improved attacking threat. Niall O‘Hagan finished from close range to restore parity midway through the second forty-five, but the spirited visitors responded superbly as Anthony Hibbert converted Dave Brown’s cross to net the winner fourteen minutes from time, before Arundel midfielder Liam Da Costa was sent off for a second booking late on.

YM manager Peter Buckland commented: “It was a really good win. I reckon that is our best win of the season, I really do. I always keep my ear to the ground and that was the first time Arundel have been fully stacked. We know that they are a good side down here. It’s a good three points. We’ve switched our formation around a bit. We’re playing 4-3-3, but with the wide men of the three alternately tucking in, and it seems to be working well. There is intensity about our play now that hasn’t been there all season. That result really needed to be dug out though. It was a little bit of a soft goal that we gave away to allow them back in, because at half time I couldn’t see them scoring. But they did, and so we had to show a bit of character then. We showed good shape during the game, which must have been good to watch for the neutral. It was very competitive and a great advert for the league.” YM Team: Lockwood, Carden (Gathern 46), Pollard, Zydonik, Evans, Gedling, Dugdale, Hibbert, D. now settled into an even matched end to end battle in which both sides had chances to take the lead. Brad Lewis, Joe Shelley and Adam Hunt for Horsham and Matt Darby and Ben Billings for Town all had decent opportunities to give their team the advantage. It was the home side that did grab the all important next goal; a goal that proved to be the winner. The normally safe hands of Hornets ‘keeper Williams let him down when he allowed a fairly harmless cross to escape him leaving Town’s striker Pogue to score from a few yards out. Town saw out the remaining 10 minutes taking all 3 points and Horsham’s unbeaten status along with it. It was unfortunate that when Horsham had so many players missing that the opponents were one of the top sides. It does show however that even with a weakened team Horsham are up there with the best in the division and will surely make it a one year stay at this level. Horsham Team: Williams, Duncan, Knee, Hunt, Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Lewis, Hadi (Hackett 48) Pamment, Boswell (Keehan 53) Subs: Storrie, Bull, Jarman.
