Villagers fight over fields of gold phil dennett
News Editor
Villagers are gearing up to stop developers turning more countryside into fields of gold after a crucial decision by a planning inspector. They believe the approval at top level of planning policy across Horsham district has strengthened their fight to prevent more lands being swallowed up by housing to make big profits for developers. The decision leaves the path clear for parish councils to consult on and complete their own policy, called neighbourhood plans. Leaders of parish councils hope this will give villagers more protection against opportunist planning applications by developers. The next key step in the Horsham District Planning Framework is on November 19, when an extraordinary meeting of the full council will rubber-stamp the policy. Not all residents have been happy with some of the land allocations in the plan, sometimes abbreviated to the HDPF. But Claire Vickers, district cabinet member for planning and development, said: “As I have said on earlier occasions, the pressures on councils to View at
Fight over fields of gold build more houses and bring forward plans that conform to Government demands are enormous and growing, and whether we agree with aspects of this Plan or not, I am glad that it has at long last been approved by the Inspector and we can now concentrate on getting the maximum community benefits from it.” Anna Worthington-Leese, Chairman of Storrington and Sullington
Parish Council said: “I am very pleased that at long last the HDPF is to be put in place. This will now enable us in the parishes to complete our Neighbourhood Plans so that we can protect our villages against inappropriate development. Here in Storrington and Sullington we have been besieged in recent years by developers trying to get permission for unsuitable and unnecessary devel-
opments prior to the implementation of both the HDPF and the Neighbourhood Plan. “In the absence of the HDPF some of these have succeeded at appeal and we are delighted that the whole of the district is now in a position to resist this and have the development it wants and needs in the places it considers appropriate.” Chairman of Henfield Parish Coun-

cil, Ray Osgood said: “Even though the housing numbers are higher than we initially hoped they would be, to have a Plan in place makes the whole district more secure against speculative development coming forward by appeal. “The Inspector’s dismissal of the Mayfield Market Town proposal is welcomed, although the continued threat from that source needs to be guarded against.”

Police have renewed appeals for witnesses to a crash at Broadbridge Heath as a man awaits further questioning. A woman was injured in the crash on the A264/A281 roundabout on June 30 this year. The incident occurred at 6.20pm and involved a collision between a white Ford Transit van and a burgundy red Ford Fiesta. Some witnesses were spoken to at the scene but officers who have been making enquiries believe there may be others who have not yet come forward. The white Transit made off and police are making a further appeal
for witnesses who may have seen the offending vehicle at or just after collision. It turned into Shelley Drive and was found abandoned in Corsletts Avenue, Broadbridge Heath, with severe damage to its front. Anyone who recalls the incident is asked to email 101@sussex.pnn. police.uk or phone 101, quoting serial 1424 of 30/06. A 27-year-old man from Broadbridge Heath, arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, other motoring offences and perverting the course of justice was questioned and bailed until November 11.

Martin Read Sports Reporter A young woman hockey player is heading for Africa to complete a running challenge to help families who have children with cancer. Horsham Hockey Club’s Emma Franks is preparing to compete in Ethiopia in the last of the demanding Great Run Series of 15 long runs this year. She decided on the 2015 fund-raiser after being impressed during her hospital work by the help given by a charity. Emma, 36, from Horsham, works as a senior hospital play specialist on a young children’s cancer ward and in accident and emergency in London. She said: “Every day I see how CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children, helps young people and their families in numerous ways to enable patients to get the most out of life. So I am running over 100 miles for that cause.” Emma usually just runs for fitness,

She said: “I’m not what you’d call a serious runner. I find it hard to drag myself out in the pouring rain for a training run, but at an event I’ll run come wind, rain or shine.” Emma’s charity runs have taken her all over the UK and Ireland, including Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle. Her most memorable run was the Newham 10km, finishing in the Olympic Stadium with friends and families watching. Emma said: “The crowds are amazing. They cheer me on. I have my name on my vest and it really gives me a big lift when I hear my name being cheered.” Emma has signed up for Ethiopia because running in high heat and altitude for the first time will be a huge personal challenge. Emma pays all the travel, food, and accommodation cost of the runs, ensuring that all money raised goes to the charity.

Ex-gym coach guilty of sex offences A former gymnastics coach is awaiting sentence later this month after being found guilty of sexual offences against young girls in Horsham and Southwater. Martin O'Hara, 50, now unemployed, has been convicted of sexually assaulting three teenage girls while working as a gymnastics coach between 1993 and 2001. He was convicted at Brighton Crown Court of eight indecent assaults, to which he had pleaded not guilty, after a trial lasting ten days. Six were offences of indecent assault on a girl then aged between 14 or 15 in Horsham between 1993 and 1995. Two were of indecent assault on another girl then aged 12 or 13 at Southwater, between 1995 and 1997. The names of the victims cannot be
made public. Three of the six offences against the first girl were committed in a gym club, and the other five offences were committed elsewhere in the Horsham area. The jury was unable to agree on a verdict for a separate charge of sexual activity with another girl then aged between 13 and 15 in the Horsham area between 2008 and 2011 and O'Hara was found not guilty of that charge. O’Hara, of Medmerry Hill, Brighton, had been on court bail but on October 23 was remanded in custody for sentencing on November 20. The charges, authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service, come after an investigation by West Sussex child protection detectives.
Detective Constable Nathalie Bundy of the West Sussex Safeguarding Investigations Unit said: "The victims gave evidence in court and we admire both their readiness to do so and the way in which they so clearly described what had happened to them. "Anyone who has information or concerns about sexual offending, whether against them or against others, can contact police at any time via or101@ sussex.pnn,police.uk arrange to speak to specially trained detectives in confidence."
national cancer charity Children with cancer will benefit from the fund raising efforts of students. Weald Sixth Form students at Billingshurst have started a partnership with CLIC Sargent and hope to raise £1500 in a year. Their first fund-raiser was a pyjama session boosted by selling cakes, and £416 was made. CLIC Sargent is a cancer charity for children and young people and their families. Rachel Harvey, member of the prefect team and charity committee
believes that this is a cause that will really engage her fellow sixth form students. Rachel said: “This year we wanted to support a charity that supports people of our own age. Most people know or have known someone affected by cancer, so CLIC Sargent seemed like the perfect fit for us.” Helen Farquharson, CLIC Sargent fundraising manager for Surrey and West Sussex said: The energy and enthusiasm of the students is fantastic and we are looking forward to an exciting year ahead.”

Burglars strike Horsham Disabled kids get new swing in the park and Southwater area Burglars have struck in the Horsham and Southwater areas as police run a county-wide campaign to combat them. Detectives appealed this week for information about the two burglaries, which both happened while the residents were out. At 9pm on October 10 a house in Turners Close, Southwater was burgled. It is believed that a group of five intruders entered the property and stole jewellery, and hard discs from the computer. The jewellery consisted of two gold rings - one of which has a central green emerald stone surrounded by smaller diamonds, the other having a central blue topaz stone with diamonds around it. The hard disks are 'Weston Digital Red Drives' . These are distinctive in that they are black shiny boxes with a silver metal panel on one side and label with red writing. These could have been dumped by the offenders as they are of little use to them. Anyone who finds these items or who saw any suspicious behaviour that evening in the area of Turners Close, which is off Cripplegate Lane in Southwater, is asked to contact the police via 101@sussex.pnn.police.ukor call 101, quoting serial 527 of 11/10. You can also contact the
independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. In another theft, a detached property in Wildgoose Drive, off Guildford Road, Horsham, was burgled between 8.30pm and 9.20pm on October 9. It is believed that several intruders entered the house and family jewellery was stolen. Police say the jewellery was very distinctive and very important to the family. It includes a gold Seiko ladies watch which has a fixed gold band strap, several childrens’ gold bangles, a distinctive gold ring with a goats head feature, and a delicate gold necklace and bracelet worn at a wedding which has links in the shape of small upturned castle fortifications-turrets, studded with diamonds. The intruders left the garden over a hedge on to the Guildford Road near to Farthings Vets. This would have been a busy time of night and the area is covered by good street lighting. The serial number for any police contact is 1531 of 09/10. Sussex Police have set up Operation Magpie to combat burglaries in the county. Police Community Support Officers and other organisations, including Neighbourhood Watch, will run activities in hotspots, talking to residents and handing out leaflets throughout West and East Sussex.
Disabled children using wheelchairs now have their own swing in Horsham Park. Local mother Kerry McGivern and her son Dylan are pictured trying out the new swing, which bought by Horsham District Council. Mothers with handicapped children who cannot leave their wheelchairs helped the council draw up plans for the swing. Cabinet member for community and wellbeing Cllr Kate Rowbottom said: “For a long time the council has planned its play areas so that they can be used by children of all ages and abilities.
“This includes easily accessed paths, ground level play, transfer platforms with handrails, nest swings, double width slides and musical play. “More recently, the council has had a desire to go a step further in our strategic play areas and introduce moving play equipment for children who rely on using wheelchairs. I am delighted that this facility is now available in a public play area in the district for the first time.” The introduction of the swing was achieved as a result of collaboration between the council and a group of
local mums with young wheelchair users. In order to meet safety standards, the new swing is located in an entirely fenced area, with a gate only accessible by a RADAR key. Cllr Rowbottom said: “We’re sure that the wheelchair swing will be really well used and will allow families with children of all abilities to play together.” Also pictured are Cllr Rowbottom, Samantha Buck and son Alfie, 9, enjoying the swing, parks and countryside manager and Anna Chapman, parks and countryside services officer.

No fooling when it comes to charity Manage headaches with Cranfold Physio The Chartered Physios at Cranfold see many patients complaining of head and neck pain. “Headaches are very common and most are not dangerous”, reassured Wendyanne Harrison. “During any given year, 90% of people suffer from a headache but very few will have a serious underlying problem, but any headaches with blurred or double vision, vomiting, or weakness of arms or legs should be seen by your doctor”. Prevent headaches by drinking plenty of water throughout the day; avoiding caffeine; getting enough and regular sleep; eating balanced meals at the proper times: avoiding food additives; and reducing stress. Tension headaches are the most common type, responding well to massage, acupuncture, stretches, neck mobilisations, and stress management. Arthritis can be common in the neck, with pain and reduced flexibility but this improves with treatment and can be maintained by an exercise programme. If there is also arm pain, weakness or numbness for long periods, you may need further investigations such as an MRI, to exclude a disc prolapse. Medication overuse headaches, occur in patients with an underlying headache disorder that "transforms" over time from an occasional condi-
tion to a daily headache due to the medication being taken. MOH is now considered the third most prevalent type of headache. It is managed by gradual reduction of medication under a doctor’s supervision. Watch out for signs of concussion if someone complains of a headache after they’ve banged their head or fallen - signs are drowsiness, dizziness or vomiting – if in any doubt take them to A&E. Whiplash is the name given to neck injuries caused by sudden forced bending then stretching of the neck in accidents or falls. It affects muscles, ligaments and joints, and sometimes also the inner ear, leading to dizziness and nausea. Accident victims may have a neck Xray to exclude broken bones. Often in the past, whiplash patients were given a soft collar and told to keep the neck immobile for several days. We now know that this delays recovery and that the key is to keep moving. Warmth can relax the muscle spasm and soothe the nerve endings, reducing pain. Acupuncture has also been found to be beneficial. Most whiplash patients (depending on severity) can expect to be better with good management in about 6 weeks. For further info or advice, call Cranfold Physical Therapy Centre 01403 721050 www.cranfoldphysio.co.uk

A poet who once welcomed Nelson Mendela entertained pupils with his praise poetry. Christ’s Hospital, Horsham, was moving to a Zimbabwean beat when Albert Nyathi, the unofficial poet laureate of Zimbabwe, visited. Albert was a pupil of head of English Stephen Walsh when he was a young teacher in Bulawayo in the early 1980s. He has gone on to a dazzling career in the arts, travelling the world performing music and poetry in both English and isiNdebele. Albert has performed for presidents and was chosen to welcome Nelson Mandela to Harare soon before Man-
dela’s death. During his visit Albert gave workshops on African praise poetry to Year seven pupils. He also spoke in Chapel to update the School about the progress made at Thuthukani, an orphanage garden and community co-op in rural Zimbabwe that the school has supported over several years through the Chapel Charity fund. Mr Walsh said: “Albert’s visit energised the school population.”

reams of the big stage came true for student Dare Haastrup when she got a date to perform a professional set at the Royal Festival Hall at half-term. Though only 13, Dare has won a performance poetry prize for young people up to the age of 18 organized by The Poetry Society, she is one of just seven ‘SLAMbassadors’ for 2015. The award, also includes mentoring from some of the country’s top Spoken Word poets. Dare is a Year 9 pupil at Christ's Hospital, Hospital, which has a Spoken Word group which is entire-
ly run by pupils. Set up by former pupils Kobby Adi and Leeza Awojobi, the group meets every week and members perform regularly at the library’s music and poetry nights. Stephen Walsh, head of English, said: “The pupils do all the organizing of Spoken Word themselves. Dare has been inspired by older pupils and she can now inspire others in turn. It’s been evident for some time that she is a genuinely prodigious talent, and this award bears it out.” Dare's winning entry can be watched on The Poetry Society’s youtube channel.

Snapper Ben, 23, opens Former priest convicted of sex crimes first photo exhibition A now retired Church of England priest in West Sussex has been convicted of five sexual offences against four young men in the 1970s and 1980s. Vickery House, 69, of Brighton Road, Handcross, was convicted on Tuesday after a 12-day trial at the Old Bailey, during which he entered not guilty pleas. The case was adjourned for sentencing and House remained on court bail. House had been charged in January 2014, on the authority of the Crown Prosecution Service following an investigation by detectives from Sussex Police over the previous 18 months.
He was arrested in November 2012 and had been on police bail until Crown Prosecution Service authority was given for him to be charged. He was found guilty of two offences against a boy then aged 14 and 15 in Devon between 1970 and 1971; one offence in East Sussex between 1983 and 1985, was against another man; one offence was against a man in East Sussex in 1981; and one offence was against another man in East Sussex in 1985. He was found not guilty of one offence in Devon against the second victim and of one offence against each of two other men, in East Sussex and in
London. Detective Inspector Jez Prior of Sussex Police said; “This complex investigation began when we received information from the Church of England in May 2012, concerning one of the victims who he has been found guilty of assaulting. The others came forward during the investigation.”The case was about power that House, who was a priest when all these offences were committed, exercised while he was responsible for ministering to their spiritual needs, and it was about opportunism, as he took advantage of situations in which to sexually assault them.”
The colours of Autumn captured in sound A young Southwater photographer inspired by watching adventurer Steve Irwin and crocodiles on television has his first exhibition of his work in Horsham museum. Benn McIntyre, also a fan of Spring Watch, was so enthused that bought a camera learned how to use it properly through forums then published his work on Facebook. Horsham Museum and Art Gallery at The Causeway is featuring 16 of Benn’s photographs in its photography gallery in an exhibition called British Wildlife from November 2 to December 24. the museum is open from Monday to Saturday from 10am-5pm. Benn took the photographs locally over the last 18 months, revealing the richness of local wildlife. The museum bosses say they capture the character and inquisitiveness of the animals. This is the first public display of Benn’s images, seen only previously on the internet. Benn said: “At the age of 23, I am holding my first exhibition. I am over the moon to be able to show people my photos in print form as many people still don't have access to the internet.”
A school Autumn concert captured the colours of the music spectrum. Everything from Slavonic Dance and Vivaldi to Wallace and Gromit and the Beatles was performed at Farlington School, Horsham. Well over half of Farlington school’s pupils sing in a choir or play an instrument, and performers were aged from seven to 18. The rich tones and colours of the season were perfectly represented by the variety on offer, from the concert orchestra’s Slavonic Dance to the training orchestra’s “Wallace and Gromit”, and from the swing rhythms of Razzmajazz to the pulsating beat of the Samba Band. Ensembles of flutes, saxophones, guitars, recorders and ukuleles performed to the highest level and
strings gave a polished performance of Vivaldi’s Triple Concerto. The many choral items, including a delightful Junior Choir, the everpopular Glee and SKATZ! and the beautifully harmonising members of Aristoskatz, entertained with classics. They ranged from “What a wonderful

Prime Minister congratulates Christmas charity cards at village libraries ‘magnificent’ fund raisers
Prime Minister David Cameron has described the efforts of a local fund-raising group as magnificent and an inspiration. Mr Cameron presented a special award to the Arundel and South Downs Conservative Association and congratulated it for consistently achieving its target contribution for national funds for 20 years.
In a letter to association chairman Peter Griffiths Mr Cameron said: "This is a magnificent achievement and I congratulate your committee and each and every one of your members who helped and worked so steadfastly and conscientiously over the years to make this possible" "The contribution made by Arundel and South Downs Conservative
Association is a fine inspiration and example, and I am grateful for all your efforts". The award was collected by Mr Griffiths and honorary treasurer Bruce Henderson. Arundel & South Downs Conservative Association was formed in 1995 and is one of five so-called 'Premier League' Associations in the country. Organisers say that not only has the association maintained its place in the ‘Premier League’, it has climbed to become the third highest contributing association, helped by an increase in membership last year and savings made to expenditure. As a ‘Premier League’ association, Arundel and South Downs raises money locally to help the Conservative Party’s campaigning throughout the United Kingdom. MP for Arundel and South Downs Nick Herbert said that he was delighted that the hard work of local Conservative Party members had been acknowledged. He said: “It’s a fantastic achievement and a great honour for our officers to have been thanked personally by the Prime Minister. “Our activists work hard with fundraising events throughout the year and I’m so pleased that their efforts over such a long period have been recognised.”
Villagers can buy charity Christmas cards from their library. Cards for Good causes is once again opening the outlets at Billingshurst, Storrington, Steyning, and Rustington offering 28 national charities. Judith O’Sullivan, regional organiser, said: “Our seasonal outlets are a great way to prepare for Christmas while at the same time providing an important source of funding for charities. “In keeping with the Christmas spirit, sending charity Christmas cards allows you to give twice, once to friends and family, and again to worthwhile causes of your choice.” In the past five years, charities have received £20 million from Cards for Good Causes - represent-
ing at least 70p in every pound out of which charities had to pay for the production and distribution of their Christmas cards and any VAT. The local seasonal outlets are part of the Cards for Good Causes’ national network of over 300 shops, selling cards for around 275 charities and staffed by more than 6,000 volunteers. Billingshurst and Storrington are open, Steyning and Rustington will open on November 3,all selling until Christmas. Larger outlets can be found in St Paul’s Arts Centre in Worthing and The Council House in Chichester. These shops will be selling cards for additional local charities as well as traditional advent calendars, advent candles, wrappings and small gifts.

A taste of life in Hong Fundraiser launched for Horsham Rugby Club’s new changing facilities Kong for Horsham pupils
The changing rooms at Horsham Rugby Club have not been upgraded since they were built almost 43 years ago and the Club is raising £100,000 to upgrade them by creating four new changing rooms. As part of its fundraising campaign, Horsham RUFC is making donating as easy as possible. Texting ‘HRFC15 £10’ (without the speech marks) to donate £10 will make a real
difference by adding to the overall total and help it steadily build towards the goal. Keen supporter of the Club, Robert Crawford Clarke of main sponsor Henry Adams, said: “This is such an active Club who welcome players of all ages, both at Senior level where three sides turn out regularly, and at Mini and Junior levels which have around 400 youngsters keen to get
out on the pitch, so the club plays a big part within the community. Work was carried out last year to update and improve the Clubhouse and now the Club is turning its attention to the changing rooms which desperately need an overhaul after so many years and lack facilities expected of modern clubs such as those for women and disabled players.” Horsham Rugby Club also has a FIT Touch section and plans to start a dedicated Women’s contact rugby team once the new changing rooms are in place. Grants have been sourced from Sport England, Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council, and an application is pending with the RFU, but more is still needed. Robert added: “The Club’s players give their all every weekend in the season, which last year saw the 1st team gaining promotion to the London 2 South East league, the highest level they have played at for twenty years, and the 2nd team moving up to play in the Sussex League One. Now we just need the facilities to also be ‘promoted’. Every donation is extremely welcome and very much appreciated by all the Club’s players and supporters, both present and future.” To donate, text ‘HRFC15 £10’ or visit the Club’s JustGiving page.
Stunning sea views and cutting edge technology are enjoyed by students in Hong Kong, and landlocked Horsham pupils heard all about them. Collyer’s College welcomed speakers from the prestigious Hong Kong University of Science andTechnology. Carl Tang, from the undergraduate recruitment and admissions office, and Andrian Chu, an economics and business exchange student, spoke to international students about opportunities at the university. Collyer’s admissions manager, Frances Boulter said: “Many of our international students will continue on to higher education by studying at a range of top universities in the UK, but for those returning to Hong Kong, attending the prestigious Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
may now be a very real and attractive option.” Carl and Andrian spoke about the structure and facilities at their university’s purpose built campus, which boasts stunning sea views and cutting edge technology. After an informative and entertaining presentation, the students also had the opportunity to take part in a question and answer session. Collyer’s vice principal Steve Nicholls added: “Many of our international cohort travel a great distance to attend Collyer’s and it is our pleasure to help shape their future by running a rich programme of progression activity. These include talks from international and domestic universities, alongside employability lectures and job skills workshops throughout the year”.

Ready for Halloween? Plant a Tree! Guy Deakins Gardening
A couple of things you should be aware of on the eve of All Hallows. Fact One. October is International Sarcasm Month. Yes, it was very well marketed wasn't it? Fact Two. This year is going to be the biggest 'Halloween' celebration yet in the UK. I have to say, I hadn't honestly noticed what with all the Christmas stuff loitering with intent. Bah and humbug. In celebration of the great pagan festival - a pre-Christian ancestor worshipfest that is over 3000 years old - might I suggest you plant a tree? With the dreaded Ash Die-back disease now officially surrounding Horsham, along with Pythophthera fungus, 'Oak Decline' nearby and a multitude of other deadlies paused at the furniture showrooms, our woodlands are possibly going to look remarkably different in the next 100 years. One only has to look at the great North American forests for evidence of what is headed our way. Many of you will baulk at this fact, declaring that you'll long be pushing up the daisies. Well, somebody once said, "You are only immortal as long as your name is remembered." (It is such a shame I can't remember his name). With that in mind, think beyond your own coiled boundaries. Think on how we, you and I can help our future generations, so that they can honour us too - rather than be-
moan the fact we ruined the climate by driving German diesels! If we start with what we shouldn't plant, that may help. Don't plant apples or pears. In order to fruit they need a spell of cold to awaken the flower bud and our future climate here in the south - it is suggested will be too warm and wet for such an event to occur. Also remove, Horse Chestnut, Oak, Sweet Chestnut, Ash, Birch, Beech, Larch and many pines from the list. Instead look to the 'non-natives' for inspiration. Magnolias were a particular favourite of our local hero Millais and are pretty bombproof. Possessing the very first 'true flower', it is a tree that the dinosaurs certainly saw and has survived all the multitude of climates in-between. Imagine Horsham planting an entire forest of Magnolia. What a splendid sight that would be! (No that isn't sarcasm). The Saphora's are another choice to go for. Being native to Japan, they have in-built resistance to the new invasive pests. Phellodendron's are another good choice, their bark it is said are too 'corky' for many pests to penetrate. My last choice would be the Gingko biloba. Another survivor of the dinosaurs it is certainly another robust species and is rather unusual as it is a deciduous pine. If you do want to plant a fruit tree, try a black Mulberry. Beautiful, long lived and again a native of China, they have seen off many a pest our 'British trees' are only just getting a taste of. Of course, all that said, I could be simply teaching you to suck eggs, for you are far too wise for me to teach you anything aren't you?
First Heron Way PTA 10k run a great success
On Sunday 4th October, the first ever Heron Way PTA 10k trail and fun runs were held with 150 runners and 60 children taking part. The challenging and scenic 10k route took the runners from Heron Way Primary School up into St Leonards Forest. The children ran on a course around the school grounds. One runner said after finishing “It was a lovely run, great route, friendly marshalls, really well organised and a fantastic atmosphere – and the tea and cake at the end just made it!” The run was a great success, and the organisers are already planning for next year. In first place was Mark Firth from Henfield Joggers with an impressive 40min:44sec. The first female finisher was Carol-Anne Davies Jones (Horsham Joggers) with a time of 48min:04sec. James Crump, Headteacher at Heron Way Primary School said, “Heron
Way Primary School is very fortunate to have such an amazing PTA. The 10K run is testament to their commitment to try and find new and ambitious ways to raise crucial money for the school. I would particularly like to thank Andy Brown and Amanda Hannan for the time they dedicated into making the run such a success.” The organisers would like to thank the marshalls and volunteers who helped on the day and a special mention to the generous sponsors who helped to support the event; Redwood Financial who sponsored the medals, BritWeb for the prizes, ICA Digital for printing, Up and Running in Horsham for providing the goody bags, Strategic for the race numbers, Freisland Campina for providing bottles of Yazoo drinks for all runners, along with donations from RSA and Green People. Also thanks to the 5th/10th Horsham cubs who manned the drinks station.

Awe and wonder at The Big Bang Science Fair From rocket powered cars to Boa constrictor snakes, hundreds of students and their teachers attended Pennthorpe’s first ever fully interactive Science fair on October 16. Everyone there was left in no doubt about the diversity and endless possibilities of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers. Students experienced science outside the classroom. They were able to learn from each other through projects such as ‘How do eggs save lives?’ or ‘Can temperature be used to move things?’ and they also learnt directly from STEM Ambassadors and representatives from Industry. One such team were Bloodhound, who are designing a car to break the World Land Speed Record. Children were left in awe, as they absorbed the latest developments and innovations first-hand. Alan Read and Chris Rickard explained their motivation: “inspiring those who follow us in life is made even greater when you meet people who share the same passion.” Engagement and enthusiasm was indeed in abundance. As one student attendee stated: “It was so exciting, because so many things were happening at once.” There were also demonstrations by Jaws and Claws, who brought along many wild and wonderful amphibians, reptiles, birds and insects. The power of animals to captivate the youngsters was evident, with gasps of delight and giggling, as millipedes, frogs and a huge Boa Constrictor
snake were gently handled, and key information about each species was highlighted. Along with workshops from other professional bodies and local employers such as Doosan, GSK, Pfizer, Elekta, Exxon and Mobil, in all, this vibrant event enabled students to think about a future in STEM subjects. The Big Bang at Pennthorpe School was attended by local MP Jeremy Quin, who was be lending his support to raising the STEM profile in the local community and praised the school for taking part in the nationwide Big
Bang Programme. Along with the Sponsor, Doosan Babcock, Jeremy presented winning teams with their awards in a range of age-related categories. The winners included Seb Taylor, James Studer, Hannah Hadfield and Tayla Philips. They gained a share of the £500 prize money for their school and automatic entry to the National Science + Engineering Competition (NSEC) in June 2016. Jeremy Quinn MP was impressed: “It is fantastic to see the engagement of children in STEM subjects, arising from The Big Bang Programme. It is

an inspirational project which opens the eyes of students to a whole range of opportunity.” The main Big Bang celebration event for the South East, the Big Bang Fair South East, will take place at the South of England Showground on June 29, 2016. Organised by STEM Sussex, the STEM outreach support department at the University of Brighton, is the biggest single celebration of STEM for young people, in the UK, and around 7,500 students and their teachers, from across the region, are expected to attend.

Lucy never felt more like singing The Blues Music Martin Read – Entertainment Reporter Singing is in Lucy White’s blood and she loves nothing more than reeling off one of her favourite jazz or blues standards. Lucy told the District Post: “My dad loved jazz so I was brought up listening to it and I inherited his record collection. The wonderful compositions and lyrics - and the beautiful arrangements really excite me and I like doing my bit to keep the iconic big band swing and jazz standards going.” Lucy’s first song was her cover version of Peggy Lee’s Black Coffee. Julie London’s Cry Me A River was soon added to Lucy’s repertoire and she is also a big fan of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Judy Garland describing them as: “All very special singers with their own distinctive styles and phrasing.” Broadbridge Heath based Lucy honed her art performing with a band and is constantly develop-
ing her skills with assignments at weddings and birthday parties and singing with a friend’s band in local halls and pubs, recently adding Nancy Sinatra’s These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ to her ever growing song list. Lucy adds: “On my mother’s side of the family my gran used to sing, accompanied by her sister on the piano – their duo entertained the troops, so it’s appropriate that I’m continuing the music from that time. My sister is musical, too – she sings in a choir in Alabama!” Gardening is the other string to Lucy’s bow – she runs her own design, supply and garden maintenance business, which she greatly enjoys but says: “I’ve just been to see the BBC Concert Orchestra and Big Band playing together at the Hackney Empire and they put on a real masterclass of the powerful music with the really full sound that I love – this was such
an inspirational experience and has encouraged me to keep practising numbers like Fever, Night and Day and The Man That Got Away. I’m writing a few lyrics of my own and have come up with some melodies, too, but I’m so passionate about the fabulous music from my father’s era and just want to sing more and more of it!” Effervescent Lucy White is available for local engagements and can be found on Facebook and Twitter – lucywhite007@ googlemail. com

La Piazzetta in Bishopric makes a great impression Restaurant Review Christine Doyle Last week Horsham welcomed the new opening of La Piazzetta in Bishopric. It is a delight to learn that after 8 years of running their first restaurant in Petersfield that Horsham was chosen to open La Piazzetta 2. Dino, the restuarant owner, said: “We are very proud of our success in 8 years of opening our first La Piazzetta Restaurant, we have been looking at West Sussex for our new venture and Horsham felt like home for us, a lovely historic town still welcoming Independent businesses, the community has a real family feel, that we feel proud to be part of.” Dino and his team are looking forward to building their reputation of great Italian food at great prices. Having been invited with my colleagues to the opening last week, we sampled some lovely dishes and met the team. I was looking forward to experiencing a visit here and it went top of the list for this week’s restaurant review. Advertising the lunch time menu, I thought I would give this a try for a change. Dino had mentioned his other restaurant is always full for lunch with both business and social diners. I took my Director Davey Pearson for the lunch date, on offer was full al a carte and a set lunch menu, offering a choice of a starter and main or main and a glass of red
or white house wine, beer or a soft drink for a fantastic price of £8.95. Midday was a little too early for us both to indulge in wine so we opted for the 2 courses of starter and main. A good selection on offer, Davey and I managed to pick identical dishes, with no arguments; I decided I would change my selection as he is my boss after all. I was really pleased I did as I went for some-
thing I wouldn’t normally. I started with the firm favourite Soup of the day, ‘roasted vegetable’ served with toasted garlic bread followed by Goats Cheese and Spinach Risotto. Both dishes were faultless, vegetable soup if always a hit and miss with me as find it can be bland, this was not the case here, so much flavour and piping hot, really tasty. The main course was a real bonus, having sacrificed my choice to
Davey; I was presented with one of the nicest risottos I have had. The goat’s cheese and spinach was a wonderful combination making this dish light but perfectly filling with such flavour. Davey was served my starter choice, Bruschetta topped with smoked salmon and mascarpone cheese “surprisingly tasty and a good choice as not too much to distract my appetite from the plentiful portion of the great Italian
Penne forno-beef ragu, fresh chilli & mozzarella, superb!” The service was a pleasure and the all Italian team add to experience here. Lunch is paced to the individual diners need, business, social or an express lunch break, all catered for at La Piazzetta. Full menu and reservations at www.italian-restaurant-horsham.co.uk or call 01403 273133. Christmas booking are now also being taken.

‘A modern interior design which pays homage to the countryside location’ will be showcased when the stylish new show home opens at The Meadows on Saturday 31st October. This is the latest phase of 50 new homes at Marringdean Acres in Billingshurst from FABRICA by A2Dominion. Created by boutique consultancy Suna Interior Design with a sophisticated and fresh design, the show home will also cleverly incorporate comfortable elements reflecting the location on the rural fringes of Billingshurst yet within a walk of the station. “We designed the interiors of this home to be a smart modern space with a sense of sophistication but that was still ultimately comfortable and inviting,” said Ellen Leedham, interior designer for the show home at The Meadows. “I particularly love the study design with the large trestle desk, behind which hangs an insect themed art gallery. We included a blackboard wall for any musings. The colour palette in this show home comprises neutrals, grey and navy blue, which all work really well together.” Susan Wadsworth, head of new homes at selling agents, Henry Adams, added: “This new phase has such a wide and interesting variety of homes that we are anticipating strong interest. The show home will reflect the high quality of finish and specification and may even inspire viewers to add their own interior design flair once they move in.” The Meadows comprises a selection of luxuriously appointed two bedroom semi-detached homes to substantial five bedroom detached family houses that will be ready to move into from late 2015. Each home has been thoughtfully designed and offers a designer fitted kitchen, contemporary bathrooms and high quality wool blend carpets throughout with ceramic floor tiling to the wet areas. “Unusually, we will also be marketing some two bedroom bungalows in this phase and the sheer variety and scope of homes here will help The Meadows grow quickly and naturally into a community for which the village of Billingshurst is already so well known,” said Susan. FABRICA is part of an awardwinning property business creating thoughtfully designed homes from luxury developments to starter homes. Backed by one of the UK’s largest developers, the A2Dominion Group, FABRICA not only builds developments, it manages and maintains them ensuring each new home is designed and built to enjoy for many years to come. Prices currently range from £325,000 for a thoughtfully designed two bedroom semi-detached house with garage and parking space to £550,000 for a substantial luxuriously appointed five bedroom detached house with garage and two parking spaces. Countryside champions at the British Homes Awards
Developer Countryside has continued its recent awards success by picking up Development of the Year at the Sunday Times British Homes Awards 2015 for St Irvyne’s, which forms part of Wickhurst Green near Horsham in West Sussex. The award ceremony took place on Friday 16th October at the London
Marriot Hotel. The award winning and commended designs demonstrate that enlightened homebuilders and developers are working with the UK’s leading architects to create inspirational homes and places to live. St Irvyne’s, which is part of Wickhurst Green in Broadbridge Heath,
won Development of the Year in the 26-100 homes category. St Irvyne’s offers a collection of family friendly homes arranged in a picturesque village style development, set within mature landscaping and well served by local amenities. With traditionally inspired architecture, the homes combine colonial and traditional ar-
chitecture with contemporary styling, while quality and attention to detail are evident throughout. Exuding luxury and opulence, the executive 4 and 5 bedroom detached homes in the Colonial Collection have been expertly designed with timeless style and features that include a grand entrance hall, impressive oak staircases and feature glazing to front and rear elevations. St Irvyne’s offers a tranquil environment with homes positioned along attractive tree-lined avenues, together with extensive planting, ponds and mature oak trees. Speaking about the awards, Graham Cherry, Chief Executive of the New Homes & Communities division at Countryside comments: “We were delighted to receive this Sunday Times British Homes Award, which recognises the design quality of St Irvyne’s. We know that our customers want homes that offer excellent design, high quality finishes, convenient locations and great amenities, and those are the key elements that underpin all of our schemes. St Irvyne’s is a fantastic example of us succeeding in what we set out to achieve.” St Irvyne’s provides an ideal location for those who are looking to enjoy the countryside lifestyle without losing the connections to London and the continent. By road, the A24 provides direct access into London to the north and Worthing to the south.

It was a hard fought but outstanding finish to the season for Sam Osborne in the final round of this year’s Thundersport GB Championship at Cadwell Park. As well as returning home with an armful of trophies, including a first place, Osborne also set a new lap record for his class. And despite missing four out of the nine rounds across the season, after breaking his wrist at Donington Park, he ended up ranked seventh in the Pre-National Sport 600 championship, a field of 55 racers. Determined to progress through the ranks, he also entered a race in the class above his, the Elite Formula 600, and swiped a cheeky third place. These are amazing achievements for Osborne who was spotted as
a rookie last year by top race-tune outfit MSG Racing and asked to ride their Suzuki GSX-R 600 in the fiercely competitive Thundersport championship this sea-
son. This was the first time he’d been out on new tyres instead of scrubs – part used tyres – which at £400 a set made all the difference.
Osborne’s weekend got off to a flying start, qualifying 2nd on the grid. In Race 1, after a hard fought battle for first place, he finished second, his efforts earning him his record breaking lap time of 1.34.4 minutes. He took first place in Race 2, and then in pole position on Sunday, in Race 3 he battled hard for second all the way round and got pipped into third on the finish line. In the last race in the rain Osborne fought a close battle for first place all the way round, only to highside and crash out. But he’s thrilled with his results. Sam, 23, a carpenter from Billingshurst, says: “I’ve had the time of my life, roll on next season – if I can afford the rubber I know I’ll be making that top step.” Sam is looking for sponsorship call 07743 931964 or see his Facebook page Sam Osborne Racing. Lancaster takes short mat bowls title Short Mat Bowls Dave Smith – Sports Editor
Champion of Champions Marc Lancaster
Marc Lancaster of The Martlets Short Mat Bowls Club, based in Billingshurst, has won the West Sussex County Champion of Champions. The county's club singles champions all competed for the title at Westergate's Six Villages Sports Centre from where Marc emerged victorious from the finals. Marc beat Southwater’s Kathy Bennett in the quarter final and Ant Bull from Southbourne in the semi final. In the final against Peter Whale from Lavant Marc found himself 1-6 before mounting a comeback to become the 2015/16 West Sussex County Champion of Champions. Since the Martlets club was formed
in 2006 they have grown to become one of the dominant clubs in Sussex Short Mat Bowls. They have competed in the West Sussex County League since 2007 earning divisional promotion every season and wining a number of competitions in addition to competing at National level. Short Mat Bowls was originated as an easy way to play the well known outdoor variety of bowls. To play bowls indoors requires a very long building in order to near replicate the length of an outdoor green. Due to there not being many buildings of this nature, short mat bowls was born as it can be played in locations such as village and church halls. The game is played on high quality green matting which is rolled out down the length of the hall.

Horsham pay the price for lack lustre first half Saturday October 24 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Horsham Ladies 0 - 1 Woking Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham never recovered from going a goal down after ten minutes, Gill Adams, injured Horsham captain sidelined for the season said: “They were all over us in the first half and we were perhaps a little fortunate to go to the break just one down, but it was great to see us bounce back fighting strongly.” Horsham battled hard and had short corner opportunities in the second half but were unable to convert.
Team Manager Jane Denman told the District Post: “It’s half term and we were without four core players but that gave us a chance to blood some youngsters,” match captain Hannah Simpson adding: “We gave a good account of ourselves and don’t want to use absences as an excuse, we’re looking to build a strong enough squad to cope with these eventualities.” A third of the way through the season Horsham drop to fifth with eight points. Surbiton remain top on 16 with five wins from six starts while Havant – beaten five times – are bottom with a single point. Tomorrow (October 31) Horsham Ladies travel to Chichester with a challenging 10am start in the first round of the Sussex Cup.

Horsham suffer first reverse of the season Saturday October 24 – South League Premier Div. 2 Horsham Men 1 - 2 Tulse Hill & Dulwich Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham’s unbeaten record disappeared, sliding them to fourth in the table, after neither team found the net in the first half, Horsham short corners going unconverted and Tulse Hill shots saved, home keeper Andy Isaacs having an outstanding game. The umpire called both captains together in an endeavour to calm matters but despite stern talk during the interval Horsham were subsequently reduced to nine men for questioning decisions. Five minutes into the second half Tulse Hill broke through to open the scoring with a high strike. Horsham attacked immediately, only to see the ball cleared off the line – but they equalised through Jack Dean ten minutes later. However disaster soon struck when a Tulse Hill forward lurking by the post prodded home. Then a Horsham short corner was kept out and a Jack Dean shot was somehow averted before late thrusts came to nought. But Horsham’s display was far from their finest, Team Manager Al Campbell saying: “We paid the price because we were ill-disciplined and we’re finding goals hard to score.” Pre season Horsham entertained real-
Jack Dean equalised but Horsham went on to lose istic hopes of winning the league but in this tough competition they can only afford one or, at most, two more upsets. Tomorrow (Saturday 31) Horsham
are at home again for a 12.00 start in a tough encounter with top team London Edwardians (with four wins out of four and more goals than any other team).
YM and Sparrows form a partnership Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor YM`s Sam Schaaf stopped by Hailsham `keeper Ben Head Saturday October 24 - SCFL Premier Division Hailsham Town 0 – 5 Horsham YMCA Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter Horsham YMCA made it three wins on the spin to move up to fifth in the Premier Division standings, as they comfortably overcame lowly Hailsham Town 5-0 at the Beaconsfield last Saturday. Anthony Hibbert’s second goal in as many games gave YM an early lead, before Luke Gedling doubled the visitors’ advantage from the penalty spot midway through the first period. Gedling saw a second spot kick saved by Stringers’ goalkeeper Ben Head four minutes after the restart, but striker Sam Schaaf spared the midfielder’s blushes as he made it 3-0 shortly after. Two goals in as many minutes then put further daylight between the sides as new signing Luke Donaldson and then substitute Nick Sullivan, returning from four games out, completed the rout, as home defender Simon Stevens was
sent off in added time. Assistant YM manager Dean Potter commented: “I thought that it was a really good performance from start to finish. It was professional. We said to the players beforehand that you can look at the league table and the fact that they’ve only won two games, but we’ve still got to come and do the business. The last two games we have played well and we did so again today. I thought that we started excellently. We looked in control and when we did lose the ball we won it back quite quickly. I’m over the moon, it was a great performance. Everyone played their part today. You need a squad. It’s not about having a starting eleven. The new shape seems to suit us. It was a great team performance, 5-0 away from home. But we set targets. Out of the four games against Eastbourne United, Arundel, Hailsham and Hassocks, we said that we wanted twelve points.” YM Team: Fox, D. Sullivan, Pollard (Crane 67), Zydonik, Evans, Gedling, Dugdale (c) (White 74), Hibbert, Donaldson, Schaaf (N. Sullivan 71), Wright. Unused subs: Carden, Gathern.
A partnership between two of Horsham’s leading football clubs has recently been launched and plans are being put in place for lots of opportunities that will benefit both clubs. Horsham Sparrows and Horsham YMCA are looking forward to working together and representing the interests of senior and youth football in Horsham. Southern Combination Football League Premier side Horsham YMCA have a long history in the town having been founded in 1898 and moving to its present home at Gorings Mead in 1923. In the early years YM played in the Horsham District League before moving to the Crawley League and subsequently to the Mid Sussex League. Their rise through the later two leagues was swift and led to the club's entry into the Sussex County League in 1959. In a long history of memorable matches long standing YM supporters would no doubt highlight the day Chelmsford City visited Gorings Mead for the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup in front of a crowd 940. Horsham Sparrows are the town’s only Community Charter Club and recently won the prestigious SCFA
YM & Sparrows players at a recent YM match Community club of the year award. With a history stretching back to 1967, Sparrows have been an ever present feature of youth football in Horsham and this season has 17 teams. Players from 4 years old can enjoy football in a safe and encouraging atmosphere and Horsham Sparrows can boast a wealth of qualified coaches, courtesy of the proactive stance taken by running in house coaching courses for its volunteers. Today, the range of teams has evolved from mini soccer and boys teams to include girls and a Women’s team and the club is
proud of its status as a Girls League founding member. Many exciting opportunities are being put in place to promote growth between the two clubs and recently, representatives from the Sparrows younger teams were welcomed as mascots for one of YMCA’s cup games. This is just one initiative amongst many such as mutually arranged social events, tournaments, matches as well as opportunities for senior Sparrows players to feed into the YM set up. www.horshamsparrows.co.uk and www.horshamymcafc.co.uk

Buckland seeks persistence after fourth straight win Tuesday October 27 - SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA V Hassocks Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter Horsham YMCA’s recent return to form continued on Tuesday evening, as they saw off Hassocks 4-1 in Premier Division action at Gorings Mead. On his return from suspension, Dave Brown opened the scoring just before the half hour mark when he showed greater desire to win the ball than Hassocks goalkeeper Reece Wickwar, and headed past the onrushing visitors’ stopper before slamming into an empty net. An unfortunate Josh Hawkes own goal doubled the hosts’ advantage five minutes later as after Wickwar had parried a low Dan Evans drive, Dan Jacques’ desperate attempt to clear his lines rebounded off his skipper and into the net. Former Robins midfielder Anthony Hibbert netted his third goal in as many games as he converted a low Luke Donaldson cross from close range to extend YM’s lead shortly after the restart,
before Jamie Hillwood’s low twentyyard drive reduced the deficit midway through the second period, kickstarting a spell of sustained pressure from the visitors. A resolute YM defence coped well however, and the home side added late gloss to a battling performance when a marauding Evans run and exchange with substitute Dean Wright allowed the fullback space to rifle the ball into the roof of the net to make it 4-1. YM manager Peter Buckland commented: “We targeted twelve points out of twelve from the last four games and we’ve done it. But we can’t ever settle for where we are at. We’ve got to keep pushing the boundaries all the time in the lead up to Christmas, when we can turn the corner well in contention. Hassocks will always give you a good game, so 4-1 overall has got to be a satisfying result. It wasn’t a vintage YM performance and at 3-1, for ten or fifteen minutes, they really came at us and we had to regroup.” YM Team: Fox, D. Sullivan, Gathern, Crane, Evans, Gedling, Dugdale, Hibbert, D. Brown, Donaldson (White 72), Schaaf (Wright 62) Unused subs: Pollard, Zydonik, Lockwood.

Adam Hunt in action for Horsham Saturday October 24 - SCFL Premier Division Horsham 2 – 0 AFC Uckfield Town Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor Horsham got back to winning ways with a goal at the start and one in the dying seconds to overcome a resolute and hardworking Uckfield team at Gorings Mead last Saturday. Ex Hornet John Kirby was standing in as first team manager for the visitors but they got off to a bad start as the Hornets took the lead in the 6th minute. Aaron Hopkinson played a defence splitting pass through to Terry Dodd who survived an offside appeal to fire past Uckfield ‘keeper Nick Collick. Uckfield could
have been level from the restart as a mistimed punch from Gareth Williams sent the ball to Elliot Wood who lobbed just wide. Horsham pressed to double their lead but despite decent efforts from Hopinkson and Evan Archibald they failed to make an impression with both teams’ defences being on top. Keeper Collick did have to work however when a superb cross from Adam Hunt was met by the head of Hopkinson only for the impressive visiting keeper to pull off a wonder save and deny a second goal. Just before the break Horsham had a let off when Ashley Jones appeared to have brought Jonathan Hamson down in the area but the referee gave it as outside and the free kick came to nothing.
Terry Dodds celebrates his opening goal with Aaron Hopkinson The second half turned out to be another period dominated by the defences, with little in the way of clear cut chances. Nathan Crabb and the lively Hopkinson both had efforts but again, not on target. Nick Collick was again called upon to keep the contest alive for Uckfield when he saved well from Mark Knee’s free kick. As the match entered injury time it seemed that Dodd’s early goal would be the only score of the match but a fortuitous goal from Ashley Jones – his cross hit the inside of the post and then ‘keeper Collick before just crossing the line – wrapped up the points for Horsham. Horsham are back in cup action tomorrow (Saturday 31) when they visit Steyning Town in the FA Vase.
Heath’s run of decent league form – one defeat in seven – came to an abrupt end at the new look Eastbourne United last Saturday. Heath were without Dan Sandell, Martin Flack and Lee Wragg while in addition ‘keeper Michael Chester was suspended which gave a debut in goal to Stuart Goodwin. The first 40 minutes of the match was a scrappy affair with little in the way of constructive football being played by either side although United did see more of the ball. Then with 5 minutes of the half remaining the game took a turn that sealed the eventual outcome. Heath failed to properly clear and United’s Tom Saunders hit an unstoppable 25 yarder into the top corner. Heath’s Jamie Robinson and Scott Weller both picked up injuries within a minute of each other and had to be replaced. Then just before
the break the home side doubled their lead when Dean Stevens hit a low drive into the bottom corner for a 2-0. Heath looked a bit more purposeful in the second half and substitute Timmy Martin was denied by a desperate goal line clearance. The match was put beyond any doubt in the 66th minute when Tom Saunders netted his team’s third goal; chipping Stuart Chester before beating Goodwin.
A late own goal by Howard completed a miserable afternoon for Heath A late own goal by Howard completed a miserable afternoon for Heath who now do not have a match until November 3rd by which time manager Painter will hope that he can put out a full strength side and get back to winning ways. Heath Team: Goodwin, Wicking, Robinson (Moore) Chester, Howard, Waddingham, Mutangi (Burchell) Godfrey, Andrade, Bhujon, Weller (Martin).
Junior Football round up Junior Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor Wick & Barnham 9 - 1Broadbridge Heath Youth Heath fell behind in the 25th minute and conceded another two minutes before half time. A goal from Ronnie Burchell 5 minutes into the second half gave some hope to Heath however they were overrun in the remainder of the half as Wick hit another six goals to complete a miserable day.
Royal Utd U12 1 - 6 Chesworth Rovers U12 Top of the league Chesworth Rovers were put under early pressure by Royals with ‘keeper Leo having to pull off two saves. Fletch opened the scoring before Regan doubled the lead with a 25 yard thunderbolt. Toby then hit two goals to give Rovers a 0-4 half time lead. After the break Toby secured his hat-trick and Regan finished the scoring for the away side. Royal scored a late consolation goal.

Josh Mills in action during Horsham's big win Saturday October 24 – London 2 South East Hove 14 – 53 Horsham Rugby Dave Smith – Sports editor It has been an impressive return to higher league rugby by Horsham so far this season and this thumping victory over Hove goes to prove the huge improvements on and off the field that the Green & Whites have made. The victory over Hove was achieved by some intense and competitive rugby that led to four tries in each half, propelling them up to third in the league table. Horsham were dominant from the start, taking only 6 minutes to edge in front through a Tom Johnson penalty. After 15 minutes Johnson accelerated on to an offload by Matt McCabe to score and convert his own try. Johnson’s own personal dominance again came to the fore in the 27th minute when he outpaced the defence to score and again convert to make the score 17-0 and put his name against all 17 points. Hove had a man yellow carded and finally someone else got
their name on the scoresheet when Arun Thompson burst through some weak tackling to score. The final action of the half saw another score for Horsham as Johnny Ordidge powered through several defenders to score from 30 yards, allowing Horsham to go into the break 31-0 up having already secured the four try bonus point. Horsham came out with the same drive and effort and it was against the run of play when Hove reduced the deficit to 31-7 with a Martyn Woodhead try, converted by Sam Whiting. Horsham extended the lead again in the 49th minute through Andy Gray and again a few minutes later when Ordidge put McCabe in to score. More was still to come from the rampant Green & Whites as Thompson scored from the back of a scrum with the try converted by James Johnson. Hove made a dent in the big Horsham lead when Massimo Hiller made a darting run to score under the posts to make the score 48-17 after 70 minutes before Mills capped a great win for Horsham by scoring on the left touch line in the final minute. Horsham coach Nick Stocker was delighted with the result. “We haven’t
Richard Tredgett catching one handed in the line-out beaten Hove for a long time. I asked for a performance of accuracy and intensity and the players delivered. We dominated the set piece areas of scrum and line-out, and our intensity generated quick ball. I felt that the two tries we conceded were from our errors which gave them field position which to their credit they converted. Otherwise they didn’t look like scoring. We have now have a balanced side that can play through the forwards or play expansively as necessary. My joint man of the match went to Richard Tredgett for his control and leadership, his carries, hits and line out work, and to Josh Mills for the quick ball he generated and his fine try.” Horsham have no game tomorrow (Saturday 31) and their next fixture is at home to league leaders Sevenoaks on November 7 when they will have to be at their very best against the inform Kent side. Horsham Team: Watts, Ordidge, McCabe, T Johnson (Hart 42) Crook, J Johnson, Mills, Barber, GranthamHill, Brady (Harcus 54) Whiting, Tredgett, Smith (Gray 40) Thompson, Gaynor.
Horsham will be home to a Formula 1 driver for the 2016 season as the Lotus F1 Team have announced that Jolyon Palmer has been promoted to one of the two main Lotus drivers. Palmer - the son of former F1 driver Jonathan Palmer - was the team’s third and reserve driver for this season and will now join the Lotus driver line up alongside Pastor Maldonado. Palmer, 24, has driven for the team in the majority of this season's free practice 1 session’s, and was scheduled to be back in the E23 Hybrid at this weekend's United States Grand Prix until bad weather stopped any on track running in FP2. He joined the Lotus F1 Team in January this year, following an outstanding GP2 campaign in 2014 where he won the championship in dominant fashion, becoming the first British driver to win the GP2 Series since Lewis Hamilton in 2006. An exited Palmer said "I'm obviously delighted that I'll be racing in Formula 1 next year. Lotus F1 Team gave me a tremendous opportunity this season and I thank them for assisting my development to a level where they have put their trust in me for a crucial season in their evolution. I've enjoyed and learnt a lot from my year as third and reserve driver so I'm looking forward to putting this into practice as a race driver in 2016. I can't wait for next season to get un-
derway!" Lotus has been dogged with financial trouble all season and they are currently hoping Renault will complete a long-awaited takeover of the team. Gerard Lopez, Chairman and Team Principal of the Lotus F1 Team added "We are very pleased to announce that exciting British racing talent Jolyon Palmer is promoted to a race seat with the team for next season. We've seen Jolyon's hard work and talent this season in the way he's approached his third driver role and he is a really popular choice for the team. As well as having a great future ahead of him behind the wheel, Jolyon is an intelligent and highly marketable asset to the team. He deserves this opportunity, and everyone at Enstone is excited to see what he can achieve next year." 2016 F1 Driver Jolyon Palmer
Pulborough earn yet another win at home Saturday October 24 – London 3 South East Pulborough 17 - 14 Burgess Hill Rugby Martin Read – Sports Reporter Pulbororough’s impressive home record was enhanced with an unexpectedly tight win against lowly Burgess Hill. Boro skipper Simon Burfiend telling the District Post: “It was a good win, but a bit too close for comfort – we made hard work of it! They were much better than their results suggest and their big boys up front put us on the back foot. But we held firm and are pleased to have signed a new lock - Hugo Baldwin. He’s played London 1 rugby and should be a good asset.” Frazer Oliphant-Hope scored Borough’s first try and Will Scrase the second, Frazer converting once
to give a 12-5 lead at half time. Tom Hoey got over the line in the second half and although the visitors added nine points, Borough were not to be denied. Simon Burfiend added: “We’ve targeted ourselves to finish in the top half of the table, hopefully as high as third or fourth and we think that is a realistic aim.” Pulborough, now sixth on 14 points – narrowly shaded by Eastbourne - return to action on November 7 with a home game versus Uckfield, 11th with one win to date. Aylesford Bulls (24) top the table, while Burgess Hill surprisingly remain bottom with just a single point. Pulborough Team: Clay, Denman, Blunden, Baldwin, Nicholls, J.Ledra, Bullock, Hodgkins, Hoey, Oliphant-Hope, Perry, Burfiend, Miller, Scrase, Paige. Subs:T.Ledra, Steere, Baxter.
