Ex-priest jailed for sex crimes phil dennett
News Editor
A retired Church of England priest from West Sussex has started a six and a half years jail sentence for sexual offences against four young men in the 1970s and 1980s. And police have released a copy of a letter which they say shows that a bishop knew that the priest was involved in improper behaviour during his employment. Vickery House, 69, of Brighton Road, Handcross, near Horsham, was sentenced at the Old Bailey for five offences on Thursday of last week having been convicted the previous Tuesday after a 12-day trial. He had strongly denied the charges, and was found not guilty of three more. He was found guilty of two offences against a boy then aged 14 and 15 in Devon between 1970 and 1971; one offence in East Sussex between 1983 and 1985, was against another man; one offence was against a man in East Sussex in 1981; and one offence was against another man in East Sussex in 1985. He was found not guilty of one offence in Devon against the second
victim and of one offence against each of two other men, in East Sussex and in London. Detective Inspector Jez Prior of Sussex Police said: "This complex investigation began when we received information from the Church of England in May 2012, concerning one of the victims who he has been found guilty of assaulting. The others came forward during the investigation. "The case was about power that House, who was a priest when all these offences were committed, exercised while he was responsible for ministering to their spiritual needs, and it was about opportunism, as he took advantage of situations in which to sexually assault them. "Our investigation into House began in May 2012 when we followed up information we received from the Church of England about Bishop Peter Ball. This led us to the first of House's victims, three others came forward as a result of publicity about our investigation later that year, and the other victim was traced by police as a result of the investigation. "Ball was sentenced to 32 months imprisonment at the Old Bailey on October 7 as a result of our investigation of his offending. "We had complete co-operation from the Church of England throughout this investigation.

"During the trial the Court heard about a letter written by a senior member of the clergy to a young man in April 1984, expressing concern about 'the affair you were subjected to with Vick'. Now that the trial has
finished we can confirm that the senior clergy member was Bishop Peter Ball. "The letter was handed to us, by the person who received it in 1984, when he contacted us in 2012 having seen

Thieves who lifted 70 slabs from an historic house have been described as repulsive in their actions. They smashed open the electric gates of top tourist draw St. Mary’s House in Bramber during Friday night last week and systematically lifted and stole 70 York-stone paving slabs. The paving, laid out in the 1890s, formed part of the important landscaped frontage of the house, now desecrated by a trail of wanton destruction. Owner Peter Thorogood said: “The stealing of so many stones throughout the hours of darkness has the stamp of a highly organised plan carried out under great stealth.” Curator Roger Linton, who has overseen the 30-year restoration of the 15thC Grade I building of national importance, said: “This repulsive act of selfishness and greed is particularly sad as the house with its lovely gardens is largely supported by some
45 local volunteers, who give so generously of their time and effort.” St. Mary’s, much admired for its typical English character, has earned top 5-star rating on TripAdvisor and is a draw to thousands of visitors to

"There is no evidence they offended against an individual victim at the same time, or that House was aware of Ball's offending. "All the victims were ready to give evidence in court. The statements of two of them were shown by video and the defence did not seek to cross-examine them. House pleaded not guilty throughout, and we admire their resolve and strength of purpose, which has enabled a man who abused his privileged position to be brought to justice."

Abigail beats blues to win award Tom saves Christmas in
A teenager from Horsham who overcame depression is among young people in West Sussex who have achieved national recognition for improving mental health work. Abigail Reeves, 17, from Horsham, and her colleagues created a campaign aimed at improving mental health services for people of their own age group. The Free Your Mind Campaign, supported by West Sussex County Council Young People’s Service, has been awarded the Community Impact Award for the most sustain-
able project in the Positive for Youth Awards. The team was presented with its trophy by Sacha Corcoran MBE, principal of Big Creative Academy, which aims to improve the lives of young people through high quality training and creative industry experiences. Abigail said: “When we collected the trophy, I spoke about how Free Your Mind has helped me with my depression and anxiety. This was a first for me, and I managed the challenge of going stage and speaking in public without having a panic attack.
I was petrified but overcame my fear. “It feels good having done it. I’ve been part of this from the beginning, all the way to hosting a convention, and now winning an award. It’s helped me so much as a person, and I’m so grateful for the opportunities” The team was invited to spend a day at Big Creative Academy in London, making a promotional film using the organisation’s cutting edge film and recording facilities. Positive for Youth is an initiative created to empower and unlock potential in future leaders across the UK. The awards were developed with a focus on recognising outstanding contribution to community, media, arts and performance, encouraging collaboration and sharing of best practice. Free Your Mind, a social action campaign run by West Sussex young people for young people, aims to challenge stigma, taboo and stereotypes and improve mental health services for their peers. Founded by West Sussex Youth MP Kai Moore in 2013, the campaign has grown to include young people from a range of groups throughout West Sussex, including service users. Pictured is Abigail (centre) holding the award with fellow award winners Stephen Gearing, Dominic Marks, Hannah Haines, Abigail Reeves, Claudia Van-Nimwegan and Gulshan Akhtar.
Shopwatch stretching across district A shop scheme to beat criminals is to be widened across Horsham District. Officers from the Horsham Neighbourhood Policing Team have been working alongside Horsham District Council and the local Community Safety Partnership to redesign the town's 'Shopwatch' scheme. The re-launch has seen local town officers signing up more than 200 local shops and they are now developing the scheme to cover other stores within the whole of the district. A new town radio scheme is also in place for both the Shopwatch and Pubwatch schemes. PC James Munden said: "It is a really good system for members to speak with each other so that they can pass on warnings of any suspicious people that they have seen in town or if they have seen anyone on the shopwatch list. This will help to spread the word around the town of any suspicious people." "We are really pleased that the new radio scheme is also up and running but we need more members and are keen to encourage current members to make more use of their radios." The Shopwatch area of the website has a secure section which is only accessible to scheme members and includes pictures of current known offenders. Members can view this and then choose whether to ban those people from their store or just be aware that they have previously offended. PC Munden said: "Shopwatch improves information sharing between police and retail staff, allowing thieves and persistent trouble-makers to be more quickly identified and dealt with." The website also has a section for Pubwatch scheme members to log in where they can view a list of banned
people. The new Community Safety Partnership website also has useful areas for members of the public to view, including safer season's advice and information about the local partnership's priorities. The website has been designed so that it is now viewable on smart phones.
Further information can be obtained from Horsham Neighbourhood Policing Team town officers by emailing horsham.shopwatch@sussex.pnn.police.uk Shopwatch and Pubwatch information along with other useful advice can be found at: www.horshamcsp. org

Vera Lynn Local chefs earn gold Ofsted heaps praise on Steyning Grammar School charity needs and silver medals runners Chefs from Lower Beeding won gold and silver in the Sussex Young Chef of the Year Award as the contest heads for big night in the New Year. They were in a “cook off” at the Amex stadium at Brighton as part of the Sussex Food and Drink Awards 2015/16. Ryan Tomkinson from The Pass at South Lodge Hotel was one of three to be presented with gold medals as they were announced as this year’s “Grand Finalists”, with Stephanie Haywood from Ockenden Manor in Cuckfield, Michael Sutherland from The Sussex Ox in Polegate. Silver medallists included Dan Cotton from The Crabtree Inn in Lower Beeding, Tom Pring from The Galin in Heathfield and Alex Floyd from the Ashdown Park Hotel and Country Club. The chefs were asked to create three courses for a special tenth anniversary menu, showcasing local Sussex producers, farmers and growers, which might be served to the 400 guests at the Sussex Food and Drink Awards banquet, taking place on January 28 at the Amex Stadium. It will be at this ceremony where the overall winner of
Sussex Young Chef of the Year will be presented with the winning trophy. The budget for the ingredients for all three courses was £15 a person and the chefs had 90 minutes to produce two plates of each course to present to the judges. The youngest chef in the competition, Ryan Tomkinson, was also a Grand Finalist in last year’s competition. Ryan is used to high standards working with Matt Gillan, Head Chef at The Pass at South Lodge Hotel, who has enjoyed recent success on the BBC’s Great British Menu with his stunning goat main course served at the WI Banquet. The contest was sponsored by Sodexo Prestige.

Students boarding at Steyning Grammar School enjoy outstanding facilities, according to an Ofsted report. The school believes it is the first state boarding school to have its boarding provision judged as ‘Outstanding’ in all four areas’ under the new Ofsted Inspection criteria introduced in April 2015. Ofsted inspects outcomes for boarders, the experience and progress of children and young people, quality of boarding care and support and the impact and effectiveness of leaders and managers. The school has been identified as outstanding in all these categories, the highest grade inspectors can give. Of particular note from the inspectors was the comment: “The inclusive community they have is a model for the world on how we can
live in peace and harmony with each other.” Head teacher Nick Wergan said: “I am extremely proud of our boarding staff and students. For the third time running we have been officially judged as outstanding with no recommendations for improvement.” Pupils seemed to agree. Head girl Vivienne Onamusi said: “Being a part of the school’s boarding is a once in a life time experience. I’ve met so many great people from all over the world which gives me an opportunity to go travelling in the future. I have learnt so much about different cultures and ways of life, but at the same time I have learnt to become more independent and give a helping hand, especially to my younger siblings. When it is time to say goodbye, I know the tears won’t hesitate to fall.”
The West Sussex-based Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity is looking for runners to fill places in the Brighton Marathon next year. It says they can participate with friends, family and even create their own teams. The charity, based at Five Oaks, near Billingshurst, said: “You’d be helping support families of children with Cerebral Palsy and other motor learning difficulties, through the valuable work of the DVLCC School for Parents who support families and educate children through the vital work they do at a crucial time in their child’s life. Contact Marielle Birks on either 01403 780444 or via email at marielle.birks@dvlcc.org.uk. The Brighton Marathon takes place on April 17 2016. The charity was formerly known as The Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy, but re-launched itself in September under the name 'Dame Vera Lynn Children's Charity'. The charity provides a specialist service for families of young children with cerebral palsy and other motor learning difficulties. Parents and children learn daily living skills together at its ‘School for Parents’ using the principles of Conductive Education. All the services are provided free.

Big honour for Andrew Stuckey, 17 Super heroes on show An air cadet has been given the honour of being named the Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet of the Year. Cadet Flight Sergeant Andrew Stuckey received his award at a ceremony at the Hawth Theatre, Crawley, presided over by the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, Susan Pyper. Andrew,
17, lives in Billingshurst and is a member of 1015 (Horsham) Air Cadets. A student at Collyers College in Horsham, he joined the Air Cadets to follow his interests in the military and its skills and says he was amazed at the wide range of activities available to air cadets. His most memorable experience was taking part in the Air Cadet Leadership Course which he found extremely demanding, both physically and mentally. Modest Andrew said: “I am truly humbled. I never expected such an award and I am extremely grateful for the nomination and hope to live up to it”. Commanding Officer of 1015 (Horsham) Air Cadets Flight Lieutenant Richard Foster said:
“Andrew has an infectious enthusiasm for all activities and demonstrates commitment and initiative and his ‘can do’ attitude singles him out as a role model to all those around him.” Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet of the Year Award marks the achievement of outstanding service by an individual to their Cadet movement. A Certificate is awarded, together with a LordLieutenant’s Badge which the recipient is entitled wear when in uniform. Each year the LordLieutenant appoints a number of cadets from the Combined Cadet Force and each of the community cadet forces (Army, Sea and Air) to provide support on official engagements during the year that they are appointed. Horsham Air Cadets is recruiting. Any interested aged 12-17, may contact them on 1015@aircadets.org
Concern over teenage neglect People in West Sussex are being asked to be alert to young people suffering from neglect. The plea comes from the NSPCC, which says few adults contact the charity’s helpline with concerns about teenagers suffering from neglect. The charity made the appeal after studying the mix of calls to its helpline. More than 23,000 children were referred by the NSPCC helpline to police or children’s services across the UK because of serious concerns about neglect according to new figures from a report by the charity, Hurting Inside. Only 15% of the children referred to the authorities in West Sussex were aged 12-17 Across the UK only 16% of referrals
about neglect were regarding children aged 12-18. At the same time, less than one per cent of the children who contacted the NSPCC’s ChildLine service last year directly indicated that they were being neglected by their parents or carers, despite it being the UK's biggest child protection concern. The NSPCC believes its figures corroborate concerns shared more widely amongst child protection professionals that there may be an underreporting of older children suffering from neglect and therefore thousands of adolescents may not be receiving the support they need at a crucial time in their lives. Peter Wanless, NSPCC chief executive said: “Our data shows that while
the general public are more alert and confident about reporting concerns about neglect in younger children, they are less so as they become older. However, unless there has been a positive intervention within the family unit, children are very unlikely to stop being neglected as they get older. In fact, in many cases the issue can become worse as children learn to fend for themselves out of necessity, give up on anything changing, often disguising the abuse they are suffering and are reluctant to approach services for help
Batman and Supergirl were in the cast as a school celebrated its own super heroes. Reception girls at Farlington School, Horsham, looked the part in style with a range of colourful costumes. Young at heart staff entered into the spirit of the occasion, too. The day was part of pupils’ transition into new topic ‘people who help us’. After discussing the importance of
helping others, the class decided it would be a lovely idea to help the nursery department in some new activities. After planning these activities with a partner, the girls carried out their helping ‘hero’ duties in their Superhero costumes. The children in nursery enjoyed being supported in activities such as wrapping pinecones with rubber bands and using the abacus to count.

Coronation meadow
Children and horses answered a plea from Prince Charles to create new wild flower meadows to celebrate the Queen’s 60th anniversary of her Coronation. In a typical autumnal scene with seasonal mists they helped plant seeds for a new meadow in West Sussex that will be used by the public next summer. Working horses were used to prepare the area by chain- harrowing the ground to expose up to 50 per cent of bare earth on the land at Wakehurst Gardens, Ardingly. The seeds, which were brush-harvested over the summer from Bedelands Nature Reserve, were then scattered by pupils from Woodlands Meed
School for pupils with special needs. About 40g of wild-harvested meadow seeds were scattered on a field that has been part of the estate for generations, but unseen to Wakehurst visitors. After the sowing by the children horses from the Working Horse Trust helped to roll in the seed. The creation of the Coronation Meadow at Wakehurst was in response to a call from Prince Charles for the creation of new wild flower meadows to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation. After sowing and rolling has taken place, hedgerows will be planted to reinstate historic boundaries from 1808 when the field was split into four smaller fields.

Young mother highlights importance of local hospice A young mother from Horsham who lost her husband to cancer has told her story to show how vital the work of her local hospice is in times of crisis. St Catherine’s Hospice at Crawley hopes to move to a new site offered at Pease Pottage. Naomi Davies, 29, from Horsham shares her experience about how St Catherine's helped her and her husband during his illness. Her comments are unedited. "My husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer in March 2013. He had an Osteosarcoma in his jaw, a very rare form of cancer which had been removed in 2012 and then grew back. “With two sons, Jamie who's now eight and Lucas who's four, it was a terrifying time for us as a young family. We were anxious and heartbroken; nobody our age should have to go through anything like it. “We were referred to St Catherine's after meeting with Ken's oncologist. We'd never had anything to do with a hospice before and hearing the word made everything feel much more real. Soon after, Ken met a nurse at St Catherine's to discuss what they could offer him and our family in terms of physical and emotional support. “I really didn’t like the thought of going to St Catherine's as my impression of a hospice was that it'd be a dark, gloomy, depressing place and would make our situation feel even more awful. At first, I refused to visit. It took me a few months to realize that perhaps I should go and see and experience the hospice.
“When I walked in my whole impression of what I thought it'd be like changed completely. Myself and Ken were greeted by a welcoming receptionist, into a lovely homely, light, spacious building. I couldn’t have been more wrong about what a hospice was - I wish I'd gone there sooner. “During my husband's illness we were offered counselling sessions and support on how to talk to our young sons. The care we received was like nothing I've seen before. Ken was helped to make memory boxes for our sons by the hospice's Art Therapist and he regularly came in to work on them with her. “My husband was a real man's man and he'd never been interested in art before but he really enjoyed working on the boxes. At a time when so much had been taken away from him, it gave him something to focus on. He even encouraged another patient to make a memory box for his loved ones. “Ken spent about three weeks as an Inpatient at St Catherine's in February 2014 for help with pain relief and medication. This was when we really saw what St Catherine's care was like. One thing that particularly struck me was how much time the nurses and doctors gave to talk to us. “I was always worrying that Ken would be on his own if I couldn’t visit, but he said whenever he needed, there was always someone to chat to. Having the Octagon room, a lounge area where patients and families can sit, meant if he was bored he could go and spend time there or in the coffee shop. He
wasn't confined to one room and four walls like he had been in hospital. “When our family and friends visited, they were always surprised to discover there was a beautiful garden and coffee shop we could all relax in and, when the tea trolley came round the wards each day, I was always overwhelmed with how the staff would offer me a drink too, not just my husband. “St Catherine's weren't only a fantastic support for Ken and me but also for our young children. Our boys would get excited about visiting, which we were so pleased about as we wanted them to have a good experience. “Even now, the boys are happy to come into the hospice and it's not a scary place for them. One memory that stands out for me is when we were making paper aeroplanes with the boys in the Octagon. One of the nurses saw us and asked the boys if they would like to fly their aeroplanes from the balcony. “It was just amazing to see the attention the nurses gave to small details like these and their care has meant our boys have fond memories of visiting their Dad. Wherever we were at the hospice, we always felt so welcome. “We never felt like we were in the way. The hospice became our second home and it really did feel like home there. St Catherine's also taught us how to live the best life we possibly could. I remember one of the staff saying to me and Ken: ‘You're not dying of cancer, you're living with it.’
“It was such a strong statement and stuck with us the whole way through his illness. It changed our way of dealing with our situation; this was our life now and we needed to enjoy every moment we had, which we did. “If it hadn’t been for St Catherine's, I don’t know how we would have coped. We certainly wouldn’t have had the special moments together that we did. Whenever we had any queries, worries or issues there was always somebody we could contact and the doctor who looked after Ken was the most caring doctor we've ever seen. “She always went above and beyond what we could have asked. In the last few days of my husband's life, when I received the call that his death would come soon, I became very anxious. “However, the minute I
walked through the doors at St Catherine's I felt safe, secure and at peace. Ken felt the same. The hospice provided family rooms where I and other family members could stay overnight to be near my husband. It meant I was around whenever I needed to be. “The staff talked us through exactly what was happening and were able to provide comfort when we needed it. One thing I appreciated, and that has stuck with me since, is how even though we were in the hospice the nurses still allowed to me to look after my husband. “With their help, we had really special moments in the last couple of days there. I'm really passionate about supporting St Catherine's and now volunteer at the hospice on reception and with the fundraising Team. Everyone is so friendly and despite everything, I still really enjoy coming here. Our experience of St Catherine's was just amazing. I'll always be grateful to the hospice for everything they've done for me and my family."

Ex-Chancellor put on spot by pupils Former flyers mark 50 years milestone at home Photos by Toby Phillips
Youngsters put a man who was once one of the most powerful politicians in the UK on the spot after he urged them to take an interest in democracy. They responded at the session in
Horsham by giving him some tough questions to answer. Lord Lawson of Blaby, a former Conservative Chancellor of the Exchequer, gave a lecture called ‘The View from No. 11’ to Year 13 pupils
as part of Christ’s Hospital school’s visiting speakers programme. Afterwards student Will Goddard, 17, said: “He spoke first about the importance of political engagement and democracy, relating it to his own experience of getting involved in politics in the 1970s out of a desire to bring about change. “Lord Lawson devoted the vast majority of his talk to audience questions on a wide variety of current issues and on his time as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the 1980s. “Two issues which featured heavily were the European Union, which Lord Lawson supports leaving, and climate change, of which Lord Lawson is a well-known sceptic. He eloquently expressed his opposition to the European Union, framing the issue in terms of national sovereignty and control, while also calling for global action on issues currently affecting Europe such as the migrant crisis. “On global warming, he argued that it would be uneconomical to consider renewable energy sources at present and instead suggested alternative energy sources such as shale gas. “That Lord Lawson was willing to answer questions challenging his positions in a direct and frank way and hearing the perspective of these issues from a different side was a refreshing and enjoyable experience which made for an interesting talk, no matter the opinions of those attending the talk.”

residents, and there was a display of photographs of the home. Sussexdown was first opened as a care home in 1965 by the Air Chief Commandant, her Royal Highness the Duchess of Gloucester. The home was originally owned by RAFA until 2007, when it was acquired by Care South, a provider of high quality residential and home care services across the South of England. RAFA continues to be involved in the home, regularly raising money to provide activities, entertainment and outings for the residents of Sussexdown – many of whom are RAF veterans. Heather Rogers, home manager at Sussexdown, said: “We really enjoyed our celebration. It gave our residents, their families and our staff the chance to socialise together and to celebrate this much loved care home.” Paula Keene, chairman of The Friends of Sussexdown, said: “This event to mark 50 years of RAFA support at Sussexdown pays tribute to all the people who make and have made the home such a special, caring place.” Visitors will also be able to view photos from the opening at the home’s Christmas Fayre, which will be held on December 5. Museum offers a glimpse into forgotten Horsham Industry
The quiet picturesque backwater that is Horsham’s Causeway was once the home of a thriving industry that used animal bones as its key tool. Lying next to the church some 500-600 years ago there was a busy industry churning out metal pins and needles for possibly the town’s leather trades or for skilled craftsmen and women in the surrounding area and booming London. This forgotten trade, silent in the documents, was only discovered when houses were built in the Vicarage Garden. Years after the archaeological excavation Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery were recently given the finds
and have put the animal bones on public display . The bones, stained green and brown have groves cut in them used to draw the wire through to shape the pins. Along with the relics of a forgotten Horsham industry, the museum has managed to create space to show off a diverse range of Horsham souvenir ware. These small white glazed items with the town crest were collected in their thousands by tourists who came to the town on market and fair days in the late Victorian and Edwardian period. Why someone would want a miniature coal scuttle with a crest of Horsham, leaves today’s visitor perplexed, but not the Edwardian
collector. With more than 40 such items and other late 19th and early 20thcentury town souvenirs on display it makes for an unusual and intriguing show. The new displays compliment and add to the very popular Horsham room, enabling the museum to showcase other parts of the Horsham story including 17th century trade tokens, issued by the town traders when there was a shortage of money, through to a hat brush, something every Edwardian gentleman needed emblazoned with the proprietor’s shop. The museum and art gallery is open MondaySaturday from 10-5pm. Admission is free.

Children in Need Halloween party The town centre Children in Need Halloween Party, organised by Horsham District Council and The Rotary Club of Horsham attracted and entertained hundreds of young families thanks to the participation of businesses and partners from around the town. The event was a great example of HDC partnership including activities by Horsham Rotary, the Horsham Urban Family Centre (WSCC), Horsham Churches Together and local businesses including Horsham Markets, Ceramic Shack and the Non Stop Party Shop. It was obvious from the huge numbers of families getting involved in all of the activities that had been arranged – in spite of the atrocious weather - that the event has won a loyal and very enthusiastic following. Children of all ages delighted in showing off their best Halloween costumes at the fancy dress competition, organised by The Rotary Club of Horsham and sponsored by Non Stop Party Shop. Dave Smith from Horsham Rotary Club said “Although the weather was very disappointing those that braved the rain all looked like they enjoyed themselves. The standard of the fancy dress costumes was incredible and we again thank the many shops and businesses that supported the Trick or Treat trail. All the Halloween costumes were fantastic but the win-
ners on the day were India Randis in the age 3-5 category, Santiago Miguel Silva Reis in the age 6-8 and Paris Fortune in the 9 – 11 age group.” The fun activity marquees, with Horsham Urban Family Centre and Horsham Churches Together and pottery painting by Ceramic Shack from Piries Place were full of excited children all day.
Children of all ages delighted in showing off their best costumes With Dave Benson Phillips and storytelling on the bandstand, roaming entertainment with a spooky skeleton and bubble fun with Bubble Jo, plus a variety of foods from around the world from Horsham Markets, there were lots to keep the whole family entertained and fed. Add to this Rotary’s efforts in attracting national BBC TV to record material from Horsham which will be screened as part of the Children in Need night TV show on Friday November 13, for the fourth successive year, and there is a formula here which fully justifies its role as an essential date in the Horsham Time Well Spent calendar.

Gatwick film released in Slinfold Just ask the neighbours
Residents campaigning to stop a second runway at Gatwick Airport released a film at the weekend to back up their case. The opponents say they are fed up with Gatwick’s efforts to lobby MPs
and local councils, whilst ignoring community concerns. They released a film on Sunday at the Red Lyon public house in Slinfold, an area which they say is badly affected by changes to flight paths,
to highlight the plight of local people. Earlier this year the Airports Commission released its finding into airport expansion, and recommended that expansion should take place at Heathrow Airport. Before a final decision is taken, Gatwick Airport management has continued its fight for expansion, to the annoyance of the Communities Against Gatwick Noise and Emissions The film, called ‘What does a new runway at Gatwick mean to you?’ can be seen at vimeo.com/144304640 The group says aim of the film is to highlight residents and local businesses concerns, to let them have a say about how a second runway would affect them in Sussex, Surrey and Kent as it is not just about a runway but so much more.
Sports groups get boost from public Scouts, rugby players and cricketers are among groups to share a payout of £174, 725 in from the public purse. West Sussex county councillors approved the grants for special projects. They include gifts of £12,400 to Horsham scouts for Weald Scouts headquarters, £10,000 to Horsham Rugby Club and £17, 800 to Steyning Cricket Club.
Altogether 17 clubs received grants across West Sussex. Projects have to be supported by the relevant local county councillor to be in line for funding. They also have to show they will have a lasting benefit to the local community. To find out more about the grants go to www.westsussex.gov.uk and search ‘Members’ Big Society Fund’.
Michael Brown, Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “They will help communities throughout West Sussex to grow and be of lasting benefit for future residents to enjoy.” Projects have to be supported by the relevant local county councillor to be in line for funding. They also have to show they will have a lasting benefit to the local community.
Hold it right there!
The knowledgeable neighbours got the edge when Horsham staged a charity quiz. About 80 people supported Horsham District Council's Chairman's Trust Charity quiz night at the Drill Hall in Denne Road, Horsham. They raised more than £1,500 for the elderly and young families who may be in need of financial assistance during school holidays and over Christmas. The winning team was led by Cllr Peter Reed, chairman of Mid Sussex District Council, which is a neighbour of Horsham district. Sec-
ond was the team of Tom Crowley, chief executive of Horsham District Council and third the squad of Cllr Christian Mitchell, of Holbrook West ward on the district council. Local businesses that supported the event included the Akash Restaurant, East Street, The Capitol Theatre, Ray Bailey Photographers, Bax Castle in Southwater as well as local councillors, who kindly donated raffle prizes. Cllr Tricia Youtan, Chairman of Horsham District Council is pictured presenting Mr Reed with the award.

After a truly amazing adventure, Directors of Lines & James Lettings Agent, Pat James & Abie Sweatman, have safely returned from the Chestnut China Challenge. The pair were amongst a group of 50 people who embarked on the 8 day trip, which saw them spend 5 consecutive days trekking parts of the Great Wall of China, to raise money for Chestnut Tree House – the incredible children’s hospice based in Arundel. The mother and daughter duo found the trekking itself surprisingly enjoyable, however, with endless undulations and temperatures hitting 25 degrees, it was certainly challenging. When asked about the intenseness of the trek, Abie said: “The daily updates we received from Chestnut Tree House, with news on the children in their care, really spurred us on and brought meaning to the words on our T-shirts, ‘Making Every Step Count”. Chestnut Tree House is the only Children's Hospice, in Sussex, caring for children with life limiting illnesses and providing much needed support
to their parents. Currently, the hospice cares for over 300 children, which costs in excess of £6000 a day. There are many more children that the hospice would love to reach, but with less than 8% of funding from the government, this marvellous charity relies heavily on donations and support from local people and businesses. Pat & Abie are delighted that they exceeded their fundraising target of £6000 and would like to thank everyone who has supported them. When the trekkers left for China, the aim was to raise enough money between the group to cover the running costs of the hospice for the duration of the 8 day trip. The group didn’t just manage this; Collectively in total, they have raised a massive £93,000 which has given each member a greater sense of achievement and happiness. Now back in the routine of their busy lettings office, life feels a little flat in; however, the memories made will last a lifetime and hopefully mean more families are able to make their own memories at Chestnut Tree House.

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT... We have been using the Resident and Clive G Hancocks subsequently, The District Post for Director advertising since the launch of the paper. Whilst it is difficult to quantify results, I would say that as a free paper, delivered around the whole Horsham District and picked up from selected places in the area, they are friendly to deal with, professional, very helpful with design and swift to print. Deadline is Wednesday for a Friday print and they have NEVER let us down! We use this paper exclusively. Because it is a free paper and the best known for that around the area, the circulation is getting bigger by the week/month and therefore I would recommend highly as THE advertising vehicle to use.

Great News – Horsham’s Bridal Room Re-Launches Business News Martin Read – Business Reporter The Bridal Room in Horsham’s Piries Place has re-opened and is providing an even more impressive service. Earlier this year they endured a set back when a shipment of faulty dress bags reacted adversely with dresses, causing a temporary closure of the business, vividly recalled by Shop Manager Laura Pidgeon: “It was unbelievable – I couldn’t imagine how anything like that could possibly happen!” The company’s Reigate shop, after being open for 13 years was similarly affected, but has also bounced back with premier service – and iconic, beautiful dresses by Pronovias & Atelier. The cloud most definitely had a silver lining because the gorgeous shops now look even more stunning than ever. Laura says: “The great thing was that despite what happened we fulfilled every order and made doubly sure that nobody was let down. Everyone remembers their wedding day – it’s such a special event. It’s fantastic to be open again in Horsham, we’re running a unique service and we pride ourselves on providing something truly special, it’s so rewarding to do that!” Breathtaking wedding dresses from the collections of top English and continental designers, including
Mori Lee and Diane Legrand combine timeless tradition with modern flair. Brides receive expert personal attention, right through from the initial trying on stage to the final fitting with one of the Bridal Room’s professional seamstresses relishing in adapting and customising gowns to meet exact requirements - in sizes ranging from 8 to 30. Bridesmaids dresses from six months upwards are also very much part of the service, as are every imaginable accessory from shoes, clutch bags, tiaras, veils, bespoke jewellery, underwear and gifts right down to boxes of confetti. College prom dresses are also a very popular speciality. Laura has been in the business for ten years, starting at the Reigate shop and her infectious enthusiasm is echoed by her friendly assistants Hayley and Georgina. Brides are happy to travel long distances to experience The Bridal Room’s outstanding service and dresses from the business star in overseas weddings, too. Whether it’s a bride looking for last minute help within a budget or planning an exceptionally lavish wedding Laura says: “Every bride is so different and we’re determined to make their big day a success. They put their faith in us and it’s great to be trusted. We’re proud to be part of their big day and love a challenge. We’re able to recommend photographers and make-up artists and will do absolutely everything not to be defeated!”

Blues Night: Ben Tyzack & Guy Tortora Box Office 01403 750220 www.thecapitolhorsham.com THEATRE
CINEMA
CAFE
JETHRO Friday 6 November 7.30pm
DAVID WALLIAMS’ GANGSTA GRANNY Tuesday 10 – Thursday 12 November The Hawth Studio, Crawley, proudly presents an evening of Blues on December 4, ourtesy of duo, Ben Tyzack and Guy Tortora. One could say that Ben Tyzack and Guy Tortora were formed in the 'blue' heat of the Crawley Blues Festival, as these two outstanding musicians, who live within a stone’s throw of each other in London, had been threatening to get together for a number of years. The festival was the catalyst, when Ben sat in on Guy’s set, and the rest as they say, is history. Solo performances by the two artists are sublime in themselves, however combine their outstanding talents and you run out of superlatives.
Don’t miss this rare performance by the two together. Ben was born in London, but raised in the deep south of the United States, and his musical style reflects these experiences. His guitar playing is an intoxicating blend; from the raw delta blues of Robert Johnson, to the powerful soundscapes of Jimmy Page. This, combined with a soulful voice and commanding stage presence, completes the picture of a very unique artist. "..hard picking, sinuous baritone guitar and growling vocals.." (Blues Revue USA) Guy was born and raised in Pasadena, California, and is currently based in London. What he does as a
songwriter and performer, is what people like to call 'Americana' these days… a hard term to define, as it seems to mean different things, depending on who you're talking to. If to you, it means original songs, wellconstructed and well performed, in some of the various musical styles that originated in the USA (as well as interpreting the work of other writers with depth and feeling), then you should check him out now. “Excellent songwriting. Subtle, beautiful . . . and lovely slide guitar!" (Paul Jones) Tickets at £14 can be purchased from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting www.hawth. co.uk.

THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC Saturday 14 November 8pm
Angela East to perform solo cello suites Hawth Studio to host Angela East's afternoon performance of Bach solo cello suites. Widely respected as one of the most brilliant and dynamic performers in the period instrument world, Angela East is praised in The Times, London, for the “elemental power” of her cello playing. She comes to The Hawth with Bach Solo Cello Suites, on December 6. Angela showed her talent from an early age, winning the Arts Council’s Suggia Award at the age of 14 and continuing her studies at the Royal Academy of Music. In 1979, after a number of years performing on the modern cello, Angela was inspired by the new early music movement, to acquire a baroque instrument. She became co-principal cello with the English Baroque Soloists, under Sir John Eliot Gardiner. She performed in Handel's birthplace (Halle, East Germany) on the tercentenary of his birth and in 1989 undertook a world tour visiting the USA, Australia, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong. She also played Principal Cello in the first performance on original instruments at Glyndebourne with Sir Simon Rattle. She has given numerous con-
certo performances in London's Queen Elizabeth and Wigmore Halls and has performed as soloist, and continuo cellist, with many of Europe's leading baroque orchestras. Among her impressive list of concert credits, are La Scala, Milan, Sydney Opera House, Versailles and Glyndebourne. In 1991 Angela formed 'The Revolutionary Drawing Room', whose CDs have r e ceived glowing reviews, world-wide. Angela is a founder member of the baroque group Red Priest, with whom she has given several hundred concerts, in many of the world’s most prestigious festivals, and in most European countries, Japan, Australia, and throughout North and Central America. Bach’s sublime Cello Suites exploit the full emotional depth of the solo cello and have been requested 38 times on Desert Island Discs by castaways, including Sir Tom Courtenay, Dr Rowan Williams, Miranda Hart, Dame Janet Suzman and Sir Simon Rattle.
Tickets are on sale at £16.95 (child: £5) and can be purchased from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting www.hawth. co.uk.

HAODS dreaming of an all-singing, all-dancing, white Christmas
Priniple cast of White Christmas
Bob Wallace (Kevin Summers), General Waverly (Howard Collis), Phil Davis (Martin Bracewell)
Judy Haynes (Rachel Farrant) and Phil Davis (Martin Bracewell) HAODS have caught the festive bug in style this year and while the bookies are predicting a White Christmas, there is a 100% chance of snow at The Capitol. Christmas is starting off with allsinging, all-dancing sparkle in Horsham this year, as HAODS (Horsham Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society) bring the classic Irving Berlin musical, ‘White Christmas’ to the stage. Based on the 1954 Paramount movie of the same name, ‘White Christmas’ brings you the story of two ex army - turn Broadway stars; workaholic Bob Wallace (Kevin Sum-

Phil Davis (Martin Bracwell), Judy Haynes (Rachel Farrant), Betty Haynes (Alicia Marson), Bob Wallace (Kevin Summers)
mers) and serial womaniser Phil Davis (Martin Bracewell), who team up with sister act Betty and Judy Haynes (Alicia Marson and Rachel Farrant) as they try to save their old army commander General Waverly’s (Howard Collis) ski lodge in Vermont. It’s a story filled with colourful characters, including ex-superstar turn receptionist Martha (Tess Kennedy), the General’s smart-aleck granddaughter Susan (Ellie Attfield & Emily Falkner), and sexy, but ditsy, chorus girls Rita & Rhoda (Daisy O’Sullivan & Jackie Shepherd). Packed with mischief, misunder-
standing and a whole lot of Christmas romance, and set to a backdrop of exciting energetic dance routines, with classic musical numbers, including ‘Sisters’, ‘Blue Skies’, ‘The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing, and of course the legendary ‘White Christmas’! The show is one close to director Stacey James’ heart: “White Christmas is my Mum’s favourite film, so when HAODS approached me about directing the classic, how could I refuse? No pressure then! The cast have been working hard tapping their way through big dance numbers and per-

fecting the harmonies for the well known Irving Berlin hits. As a director, I love to push the cast to create believable and relatable characters and I always have to get the comedy out of a show, so expect to meet some hilarious characters.“ As Christmas arrives in Horsham, the cast have been singing about snow and glistening tree-tops since May! You can catch a preview of the show, as they perform on the Carfax bandstand, on November 14 and 21 from 12pm- 2pm. Stacey says it perfectly: “This fantastic show is a great way to start off
your celebrations, put a smile on your face and warm your heart. If you are looking for a romantic date night, a treat for your nan or a girls night out, you will not be disappointed!” Start your festive season with HAODS’ White Christmas at The Capitol, November 24-28, every evening at 7:30pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2:30pm. Tickets are disappearing faster than snow in Florida, so call the box office on 01403 750 220 or visit www.thecapitolhorsham.com For more information on HAODS visit www.haods.co.uk, or on Facebook and Twitter @HAODSHorsham.

Pizza Express is celebrating the launch of its exciting new look restaurant in Horsham. Located in East Street, this restaurant has been totally transformed and features artwork paying tribute to Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the major Romantic poets, who was born in Horsham. Each PizzaExpress restaurant is individually designed
– often using well known places, people or historical events from the area as the basis. The interior of the Horsham restaurant has a range of collage artworks inspired by Shelley’s poetry and his story. The artworks combine pieces of text and imagery that give a contemporary interpretation of his work.

Solus Décor - Fire for your Room Outside Fire pits are a relatively new feature in the UK design and gardening world. They came over from warmer regions such as California, where the trend started, and are a luxury accessory that can easily be incorporated into garden designs in the UK as they are perfect for generating some warmth in our chillier alfresco lifestyle.
products all over the world to continents including Asia, Australia, Africa, North America and Europe. They launched the British arm of the business at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show this year and hope to expand their business all over Europe, the Middle East and Northern Africa in early 2016, with plans to include Australasia in 2017.
Solus Décor is a Canadian company founded 17 years ago by Brad Carpenter. They are unique in that their products are crafted almost entirely by hand and their ethos is very much geared towards sustainability. “The design is obviously a key feature of our fire pits,” says Brad, “but it’s also really important to us that they are sustainable. We strive for a small footprint – we use certified lumber, recycled materials and draw the bulk of our energy from human power. We believe sustainability and longevity go hand-in-hand.”
After the discovery of fire many hundreds of thousands of years ago, it’s believed that fire pits were created by our ancestors to control the flames and the output of heat. They were initially holes dug in the ground, fuelled by wood and were designed for warmth, to ward off predators, to be a signalling beacon and later to cook food on. Fire pits in 2015 are – as you would imagine – far more sophisticated. Solus Décor fire pits can be fuelled by natural gas and bio fuel and are products of real beauty. They don’t need to be fixed into the ground and can be moved.
From humble beginnings, Solus Décor have now shipped their

really taken with his products. He is now incorporating them into some of his landscape designs. “The British are world renowned for their garden design, however the one thing we don’t tend to do is incorporate heat into our gardens, which is surprising considering our climate!” says Jack. “I think they are a great conversation starter, providing atmosphere and warmth and can really add a dimension to a garden. According to the ASLA (American Association of Landscape Architects), fire pits are the number one design feature sought by clients for outdoor living spaces in America – who knows, in the next few years BALI (British Association of Landscape Architects) might be saying the same! Natural Stone Daniel Barber
How to give a garden character with the use of natural materials by Dan Barber The use of natural stone is an everpresent feature of many successful garden designs. With its wide variation of patina, texture and colour there is a large choice to suit many a garden style.
Stone stacked tiles facia One such technique is the use of stonework not only for the conventional patio but to allow for the opportunity to face a tired or plain looking wall. With the development of fascia stone-stacked tiles, there is now the option to create a feature wall that offers so much more than just a change in colour. If you decide to implement lighting within your design, stone-stacked tiles can also add to texture and nuances that the lighting can create. However, if a more traditional look is required, you can always be confident that there is a wide choice of stones to look at.
Beltrami paving
Chilstone Coping on low wall and Beltrami paving Over our past projects we have experimented and discovered new ways in which to use stonework. This has partly been due to our suppliers offering and developing new installation techniques, but also as designers we like to stretch what these group materials can offer you.
Beltrami next to brick edging
Basalt edging
When you are considering what material to use make sure that you find a selection of samples that give you some ideas as to the character of the stone as there can be quite a difference between two types of limestone for example, let alone between stone types. If you would like to use natural stone and you feel your budget cannot stretch to a limestone, basalt or granite why not consider ethically sourced Indian sandstone. Currently we are experiencing a boom in the trade of Indian sandstone partly down to its unit cost, but also because it offers so much variety in colour and texture. It is a great material to use for both traditional and contemporary styling but be careful and make sure it is being sourced sustainably and ethically.

Atlantis dominate County Championships Swimming Richard Hayes – Atlantis SC
Some of the Atlantis swimmers with their medal haul
Atlantis Swimming Club have comfortably finished the final weekend of the Winter County Championships in first position. There were some outstanding performances from the Atlantis swimmers in the competition with the club scooping an impressive 40 gold medals. The 100-meter individual medley championship was the climax of the competition and was contested between all the top swimmers. Atlantis hotshot, 16-year-old Beth Britton, came away with the junior title. One of the clubs younger swimmers Issy Hayes picked up five gold medals along with the Top Girl age group trophy. The junior boys performed superbly with some great gold medals from freestlye specialist Daryan De Klerk,
breast stroke hotshots Jacob Davis and Ryan Gant and the formidable Michael Pallister. Talented 10 year old Amber Ranson picked up several gold medals along with her training partner Olivia Round Pitman who was still swimming out of her skin despite picking up an injury. The ever dependable regional and national girls’ squad were well represented with multiple gold medals won by, Rebecca Barber, Beth Britton, Eve Clark, Lily Davis, Jade Stocker and Amelia Wright with some phenomenal breast stroke swims. Not to be outdone, James Hartley won an impressive set of gold medals making sure the girls didn’t get all the bragging rights. Atlantis now looks forward to a busy winter schedule of competition hoping to continue with its winning ways.
The Sporting Life at Collyer’s College Hawks win at Eastbourne U16 Eastbourne Lions 59 - 75 Horsham Hawks U16 Youth Basketball Dave Smith – Sports Editor
Collyers Football team - Sussex League Cup winners Junior Sport Martin Read – Sports Reporter Sport is really taking off in a big way at The College of Richard Collyer. It has always been a significant part of life at the college but ambitious plans are nearing fruition following receipt of a sizeable grant from Sport England and a substantial boost in facilities, equipment and coaching. Every Wednesday minibuses set off from Collyers taking players to represent the college against schools in the region, competing in county and regional cups and leagues. And, the new regime is certainly paying dividends with students delivering success across a range of sports. Sports Development Officer John Burroughs told the District Post: “We’ve had a particularly strong start to the academic term – the
Rugby team have won all of their eight games and are through to the third round of the NatWest National Cup, having just walloped their Redhill counterparts 67-14, and the footballers have also made it to the third stage of the English Schools National Knockout competition. The basketball, netball and hockey teams are flourishing, too, former Collyers student Lucy Wood featuring in the England hockey squad amid our growing “Hall of Fame” gallery.” Collyers have developed close ties with both Horsham and Dorking Rugby clubs and will soon be launching a full blown Rugby, Netball and Basketball Academy with other sports to follow. It is hoped that by raising its profile, Collyers will encourage sports minded students to join the college and make full use of what is on offer, including rugby and football for
girls, facilities for disabled sports, a lunchtime 5-a-side football league and Swim, Jogging and Badminton Clubs, John Burroughs, who represents Horsham at the highest local level of cricket and hockey, adding: “Students can train as part of their syllabus, participating in our specialist programmes. We’re developing the variety of sports on offer and are encouraging all of our 1800 students to take an active part in Collyers sporting life. “Our aim is to act as feeder system ensuring that our best sports players join local clubs and play for them – as is already happening, for example with Noah Chinn who is now a regular in Horsham Hockey Club’s Men’s first team. We’re also keen to open up our facilities for community use.” For details of sport at Collyers please see http://www.collyers.ac.uk/collegesport/10846.html

Horsham Hawks U16's travelled to Eastbourne Lions at the weekend looking to improve on recent back to back home losses. With 3 of the 10 man squad delayed en-route, the front 5 of Josh Raby, Will Putner, Sam Devine, Kieran Lee & James Maclean started slowly struggling to find their natural rhythm at both ends of the court, finding themselves 7-3 in the early stages. However excellent ball hustling from Raby forced a number of turnovers and swung the momentum in favour of the Horsham team. Hawks rate of scoring improved rapidly with Lee, Putner, Devine and Raby all contributing in an impressive 17- 4 run. Another late arrival Mo Bangura added further dynamism with consecutive power drives to the basket late in the opening period as Hawks built a commanding 24-13 lead.
The second quarter was an even contest as both teams rotated their benches with Teagen Holden, George Makin and Tommy Strange all contributing as Hawks matched Lions bucket for bucket. The hugely impressive Putner stamped his authority scoring 12 consecutive points with an array of mid range shots and inside plays and Lee capped a fine first half with a long range 3 as Hawks went into the break 43-32 ahead. In the 3rd quarter Hawks restricted Lions to 8 points whilst adding 18 points of their own through Holden, Bangura Lee and another 12 points for Putner. With a 21 point lead going into the final period Hawks were able to control the clock and although Lions tried their best to narrow the gap Hawks looked comfortable with Putner scoring the final basket of the afternoon to take his personal tally to 35 points in the 75-59 Hawks victory. Horsham Hawks U16: Will Putner 35, Kieran Lee 14, Sam Devine 12, Mo Bangura 6, Josh Raby 4, Teagen Holden 2, Hayden Brock 2, Tommy Strange, James Maclean, George Makin.
Become a Keenager today!
Arun Badminton Club's over 45 section, the Keenager’s Senior Badminton Martin Read – Sports Reporter Remaining active in sport in advancing years is not a problem – become a Keenager! Keenagers is a section of Horsham Arun Badminton Club with excellent facilities at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre where their friendly group of members meet on Mondays and Fridays from 9.30 to 12.30 to play singles and doubles matches. Organiser Marianne Hobby tells the District Post: “Keenagers provides the opportunity to tune up our reflexes and keep
involved in sport and we always make time after matches for coffee, biscuits and a chat in our clubroom and enjoy socialising together. Serious players have competitive matches while others just relish keeping fit in the fun environment and it’s very satisfying to stay supple and in control of our waistlines!” The Keenagers welcome anyone over 45, especially experienced players, and coaching is available on Friday evenings for beginners. Badminton has been appreciated for many years, contested in the Olympics with participants worldwide, and Sports Minister Tracey Crouch backs a hugely popular programme taking badminton round schools, engaging 40,000 enthusiastic pupils. Marianne adds: “That’s great, but don’t let the kids have all the fun! We love playing against familiar faces and it’s always refreshing to make new friends, so come and meet the Keenagers – you’ll be sure of a warm welcome and can have two free taster visits before joining!” Marianne can be contacted on Horsham 258086 or mar.ros@btinternet.com

Horsham’s Pam Goodall cycled the World cycling
Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Pam with a back drop of the Taj Mahal on her epic ride Saturday October 31 – South League Premier Div. 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 1 2 London Edwardians Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham’s defence negated highflying London Edwardians and then outplayed them in the second half but ended pointless, dropping to fifth in the table. First half Horsham attacks lacked venom but they held Edwardians at bay, clearing short corners and benefiting from a disallowed goal until just before the break the visitors hammered a fast high shot into the corner of the net. Seven minutes after the resumption Jack Dean broke through and, skirting the keeper, equalised with an outstanding goal. Energised Horsham then delivered a sustained purple patch with wave after wave of attacks, John Burroughs scything
through. But, with three short corners unrewarded and, crucially, Cirdec Atkinson shooting just wide before Freddie Campbell’s send off for pushing on a highly promising solo charge, the score remained level. Then, suddenly Edwardians looked menacing with two short corners before pulling off an opportunist killer goal just before the final whistle to sneak off with the points their fifth win from as many starts. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell said: “We were by far the better side in the second half and were a bit unlucky.” Horsham defender Dom Cohen added: “In such an intensive game against strong opposition we needed 15 players to call on so it was galling that a warm up injury denied us the services of Duncan (Howarth – Horsham captain)”. Tomorrow (Saturday November 7) Horsham travel to Marlow, on equal points but seventh because of an inferior goal difference.
Retirement can be unfulfilling, but not for Pam Goodall. Pam had joined Horsham Cycling and enjoyed group cycling holidays - but with her sixtieth birthday beckoning she set off from Horsham to cycle round the world alone on a bespoke red bike, named Alchemy to reflect their close companionship. The enormity of her challenge soon surfaced, until a thousand flat, safe miles through Danubian countries quelled doubts. Despite constant warnings about neighbouring countries being dangerous Pam encountered surprisingly few problems. True, she went over the han-
dlebars in India, landing in a bloody heap. Damaged Alchemy was fixed for a few pence and she appeared on breakfast TV - yet was never asked about her battered and bruised appearance. Pam was also chased by dogs, ambushed in Romania, threatened in Vietnam and visa problems were routine but after riding through 22 countries, speaking at Horsham Library, she said: “I was frequently overwhelmed by endless unsolicited acts of kindness from people who would never see me again. Complete strangers did my laundry, gave me meals and provided accommodation. I was invited to an arranged marriage, the bride and groom only having met once before, and was befriended by a poor Muslim community in Pakistan. It was a huge learning experience to fit in with so many different cultures. I’m a vegetarian
but had to be polite when generously presented with meat dishes.” Wasn’t Pam apprehensive about travelling alone? “I’d never previously fixed a puncture but haven’t got the imagination to be frightened! My intuition protected me and no nervous companion held me back. I lost two stone but gained so much more by meeting so many wonderful people.” After a year away was it difficult settling back in West Sussex? “The worst thing was adjusting to riding back on the left again!” And, ironically, after returning unscathed, a seemingly minor freak accident promptly sidelined Pam in plaster for six weeks. Would she undertake another long ride? “No - I’m a beekeeper now and can’t abandon them!” Pam Goodall’s round the world exploits are described in her light hearted book “Riding It Out”.

Despite being without seven first team players for the tie, a depleted YM took the lead six minutes after the break when Dave Brown’s low cross from the left was turned into his own net by Lillywhites defender Jamie Horncastle. But two City goals in as many second half minutes turned the game on its head midway through the second period, as midfielder Dan Hegarty first poked home from close range to restore parity, before Jimmy Wild’s low strike less than sixty seconds later made it 2-1.
The YM boss commented: “Basically we got bullied today. It’s as simple as that. With the players that we had available, we got bullied. We were just out-muscled. We couldn’t settle into a rhythm of playing football at all because we were second to every ball. They were just about within the rules of the game on their physicality and we just never had the players to stand up to that. We could have put a team out with the players that weren’t available. We did not have a single forward. We were just too lightweight up top. There’s no question about that, the ball just kept coming back and it just didn’t happen in the last third of the field. But it is what it is. I’m not going to lose any sleep over it and I’m not just saying that after the event, I’m truly not. I learnt a bit today. I was very disappointed in some of the players. I don’t mind losing a game of football, but we were outmuscled and outfought today and I’m not used to that.” YM Team: Fox, Gathern, Pollard, Zydonik, D. Sullivan, Gedling, Dugdale, White (Gannon 72), Hibbert, Donaldson, D. Brown. Unused subs: Ribul-Conte.
Saturday September 31 - Sussex Cup Round 1 Chichester Priory Park Ladies 1st XI 1 - 7 Horsham 1st XI Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Unfazed by an inconveniently early start in Chichester, Horsham romped home despite the hosts scoring first. Horsham fielded a combined first and second XI team against the lower league opposition with keeper Jo Humphreys saying: “After 15 minutes we really gelled, dominating from there on. We led 3-1 at half time and in the second half I didn’t have too much to do. It was great to be able to relax and watch us play some good hockey!” Lauren Keefe scored Horsham’s equaliser, the subsequent six goals coming from Sam Stares and Shiv Aherne (two each) and one apiece from Tiff Male and Louisa Denman. Lauren telling the District Post: “All of our youngsters played well and
we voted one of them, Jemma Murphy, Player of the Match because of her tackling and the way she carried the ball.”
Lauten Keefe scored Horsham’s equaliser, the subsequent six goals coming from Sam Stares and Shiv Aherne (two each) In the next round, the quarter final stage, on December 12 Horsham travel to Burgess Hill. Meanwhile, tomorrow (November 7) Horsham, pressing to improve on their current fifth spot, return to league action with a trip to Staines (eighth with one win from six starts).

YM fight back to progress into next round Tuesday November 3 - Peter Bentley League Challenge Cup Second Round Horsham YMCA 5 - 3 Crawley Down Gatwick (AET) Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter Horsham YMCA required extra time to move into the third round of the Peter Bentley League Challenge Cup on Tuesday evening, after they came from behind to beat Division 1 Crawley Down Gatwick 5-3 at Gorings Mead. Trailing 3-1 at the break, a much improved hosts fought back following the restart and after equalising late on to force a further thirty minutes at the end of normal time, secured a deserved win to set up a home tie with Hassocks in the next round. Manager Peter Buckland commented: “I’m really pleased with the result, but more importantly
the response. It proved to me that they are a really good bunch of players that care and they went out and did the club proud in the second half.” Luke Donaldson’s eleventh minute header was immediately cancelled out by Gatwick striker Oli Leslie, before Ben Brooker put the visitors in front midway through the first period and Harry Lowe’s twenty-five yard thunderbolt made it 3-1 right on the stroke of half time. Dan Pollard headed a Luke Gedling corner into the net unmarked to halve the deficit, before substitute Nick Sullivan fired home from eight yards to equalise three minutes from time. Extra time proved one way traffic and two first half strikes in quick succession from Sullivan and then Sam Schaaf made it 5-3. Buckland concluded: “The old cliché is a game of two halves and tonight it was definitely a game of

Sam Schaaf completed the comeback for YM two halves. We were as good in the second half as we were poor in the first. They were a very good side, who were well disciplined. It shows that they’ve been together for a
while now and it was nice to see some of the lads back down here, it really was. I’m not just saying that after a victory.” YM Team: Lockwood, D. Sullivan,
Gathern, Pollard (Zydonik 97), Evans, Gedling, Dugdale (c), Hibbert, Donaldson, Wright (N. Sullivan 68), Schaaf. Unused subs: Fox, Crane, White.

Saturday October 31 – FA Vase Round 1 Steyning Town 1 – 0 Horsham Horsham suffered their third defeat in the last four matches at Steyning Town last weekend in a result that ended their involvement in the FA Vase for another season. This was the Hornets second cup exit at the hands of lower league opposition in as many weeks and it will be of no consolation to manager Dom Di Paola that his team dominated possession against a side set up to defend. In credit to Steyning they did what they set out to do extremely well and Horsham found their resolute defence frustratingly difficult to breach with no real clear cut chances falling their way. The first half efforts on goal - al-
though all tame or high and wide - came from Horsham but nothing amongst them caused Steyning ‘keeper Ben Rose any major worries. Just before the break the ball did pass Rose and hit the net when Terry Dodd’s header from a corner looked to have given Horsham the lead. Dodd was however penalised for a push on a defender and referee Hughes instantly awarded the home side a free kick. After the restart Dodd carried on from where he and his team mates left off by sending a long range effort high over the Town crossbar. In a rare piece of action at the other end Horsham had a let off when the underworked Hornets ‘keeper Gareth Williams allowed the ball to escape his grasp only for Town’s Rod Clark to somehow miss an open goal. The miss seemed to spur the home side and they started to become a little more adventurous. The usually safe hands of Williams again let him down when he dropped a harmless cross that very nearly crossed the goal line. At the final whistle neither Hor-
Aaron Hopkinson in front of Horsham's travelling support sham’s dominant possession nor Town’s growing confidence had produced a goal so extra time was required. Extra time was much the same, Horsham huffed and puffed and had a few long range wayward efforts while the increasingly adventurous home side continued to see more of the ball. The only difference in extra time was that the elusive goal finally came. With five minutes of the additional 30 remaining the second of two successive Steyning Town corners found Jordan Peskett who crossed to the far post where Lee Garnham’s header left Williams flat footed and send Town surprisingly into the second round. Horsham now visit Worthing United tomorrow (Saturday November 7) for a league match in which manager Di Paolo will be looking to right this current blip in form. Horsham Team: Williams, Hunt, Duncan, Jones, Clark, Farmer, Shelley, Lewis, Dodd, Pamment, Boswell. Subs: Hopkinson, Crabb, Storrie, Archibald, Chadwick.
Broadbridge Heath will now travel to Littlehampton on December 4 in the next round after an impressive victory over high flying Eastbourne Town. After a goalless first half the game shot into life within 6 minutes of the restart when Scott Weller gave Heath the lead. Two
goals in a minute from Kenny Pogue and Wes Tate put the inform visitors in front before Ollie Moore restored parity in the 65th minute. The impressive victory was sealed with goals from Andy Waddington and Tiago Andrade in the final 20 minutes. Heath are back in league action tomorrow (Saturday Nov. 7) when they host Hailsham Town at the Leisure Centre. Heath Team: M.Chester, Ozga, Robinson (Wicking 75) Attwater, Howard, Waddingham, Moore (Wragg 80) S.Chester, Andrade, Weller, Martin (Holmes 80)
Junior Football round up Perrywood U15 3 - 5 Chesworth Rovers U15 Chesworth Rovers made hard work of beating Perrywood after letting the Horley side back into the game from Rovers’ dominant position. After a goalless first half hour, Chesworth scored three in quick succession through Tim Bennett, Harry Bryant and Michael Murray, and Perrywood pulled one back before half time. The home side added a second soon after the restart and although Bryant restored the two-goal lead Perrywood came back again to make it 4-3 with five minutes to go. Bennett’s second goal made the result safe a minute later. Horsham Sparrows Under 14 – Sparrows played a friendly away at Billingshurst. Sparrows started strongly with goals
from Jacob and Alex giving them an early lead but Billingshurst pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time. Sparrows continued their good form in the second half with goals from Alex and Rob giving 4 - 1 to Sparrows at the end. Man of the Match went to Alex for his 2 goals and an impressive performance. Under 15 – The team continued their unbeaten run by securing a 3-3 draw against table toppers Copthorne. Goals from George, Benedict and Harry and a man of the match performance from Jordan were the highlights of closely contested game. Women’s Team – A last minute goal saw the team secure the points against a resilient Mile Oak team. Final score Horsham Sparrows 3 Mile Oak 2
