Tribute honouring forgotten Horsham heroes unveiled phil dennett

News Editor

Overlooked war heroes were finally remembered when more than 40 new names were unveiled at Horsham’s war memorial on Wednesday. Descendants watched on as the chairman of Horsham District Council performed the ceremony for Horsham servicemen and women who gave their lives 65 years ago during WWII but have only just been publicly acknowledged. Cllr Tricia Youtan also laid a wreath of remembrance as part of the annual Armistice service in the Carfax. In addition to Remembrance Sunday, the Horsham Branch of the Royal British Legion and the council organised the short morning ceremony. For local historian Gary Cooper the unveiling was a special moment. More than 20 years of his dedicated research helped trace the missing names. They now join those from World War One, to which a special plaque was put

up seven years ago to acknowledge those who had been left off the original 1914-18 memorial. For some reason lost in the distant past the town’s leaders decided not to list all the fallen after the end of the war in 1945 but instead installed a simple plaque saying: “Also in memory of those who gave their lives in Second World War 1939-1945”. In 1992, a list of those servicemen and women who died in World War Two was drawn up and a plaque was added to the Memorial Wall, which forms a backdrop to the stone obelisk. That list was created by diligent research, and Mr Cooper’s work meant that 43 names have put on the memorial. Cllr Youtan gave the dedication speech before the two minutes silence. Children from St. Mary’s Primary School, Horsham, represented future generations the future and planted 12 remembrance crosses at the memorial. Mr Cooper said of his exhaustive work: “I thought it had to be done, so that’s why I did it. If you do anything like this you just have to be a bit bloody minded, because you can think of all sorts of reasons for not doing it.”

orsham police officers will be working in other areas after the formation of a policing “hub” taking in a wider area. Under new arrangements officers will no longer work just within their usual district boundary, but might be sent to incidents in places outside of Horsham such as Worthing. The changes began under what is known as the new ‘Local Policing Model’. Sussex Police Horsham District Commander Chief Inspector Howard Hodges said in a report: “Officers from Adur and Worthing district will be joining with those from Horsham district to take responsibility for a wider policing area; moving to a model known as

a policing hub. “Officers will continue to work from their relevant locations but in order to asses where the greatest need is across both areas they can now be deployed further afield. “We have begun our merger process this month with consultation through joint meetings to determine what our intelligence led priorities should be and where our resources should go. “We have already carried out joint activities such as executing drugs warrants with positive results. A date has yet to be agreed for this formal transition.” The hub contrasts sharply with the 1950s-style image of the local ‘bobby on the beat’, which was long ago overtaken by technology and changes in the way police work.

services manager at St Catherine's, said: "Our patients created some artwork last November, which was displayed at St Catherine's and uploaded to Facebook. The artwork received hugely positive feedback from our supporters, so we were inspired to create some Christmas cards. This year we asked patients from our Day Hospice, as well as those from our bereaved young children's group, to contribute designs. The public love the concept of it. Our sales have been going well so far and our patients are already making art for our 2016 range." Christmas is a poignant time of year for St Catherine's patients and their loved ones and the hospice is on hand throughout the festive season to continue to provide practical and emotional support to people whenever they need it. This vital support costs £180,000 over the 12 days of Christmas, or more than £30,000 for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day alone.

Cancer patients and children have designed Christmas cards for a hospice this year. St Catherine’s Hospice at Crawley has launched an extra special Christmas card range, as 10 of the festive cards have been designed by patients and children who have received support from the hospice. Lindsay Day, palliative care nurse practitioner, said: "The patients in our day hospice really embraced the Christmas spirit when they designed these cards. Painting and drawing can be very therapeutic and relaxing in itself but to see their artwork sold in our charity shops and online shop is something very special. The families of patients I've spoken to have been overwhelmed and for those who are now bereaved, the cards have been a real act of remembrance." The cards are now on sale in St Catherine's 14 charity shops across Sussex and Surrey as well as online at www.stch.org.uk/christmas. Wayne Stepney, front of house

More escorts for children needed Spielberg script writer to hold Q&A session

Children need more escorts to help them to get to school. The youngsters have special needs and mini buses, taxis and cars are used to take them to classes. West Sussex County Council is looking for more to join a team of school escorts. Joanne Carpenter, pictured, is one of the escorts who enjoys her job and feels she is making a difference. Joanne has been working as a school escort for seven years, starting out as a casual member of staff before being made permanent last year. She said: “I love what I do. This service makes a real difference to children and young people with special needs as well as their families. “Our job is to get them from home

to school, and back again, ensuring they are safe and happy. “It is an early start – I’m met by the driver at around 7.15am, but then we usually finish by 9am and that’s it until the afternoon. “It’s a role that’s very easy to fit around my other commitments and it’s varied. No two children are the same.” The council is currently recruiting casual staff to join the school escort team, to provide support and cover when permanent staff members are unable to work. Jeremy Hunt, the Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “Joanne and her colleagues make a huge difference to the lives of families across West Sussex. “We want to ensure children – all

children – across the county are able to enjoy a good education, and to be able to offer this service is incredibly important. “It gives parents peace of mind that their children are able to travel to school safely. “While we do have permanent staff who work as school escorts, having a strong bank of casual staff is absolutely vital to the smooth running of the service.” To find out more about the role, what it involves and how to apply, please visit www.westsussex.gov. uk/jobs and search ‘school escort’. If you think your child may require assistance for travelling to and from school, information is available at www.westsussex.gov.uk/schooltransport

D-Day looms for crucial Hazel hits the ground council tax decision running People on low incomes in Horsham district could have to pay more towards council tax to help support those even worse off if councillors approve a change next month. Horsham District Council plans to use the extra income to ensure what it calls the “most vulnerable” residents are protected. A decision on whether to proceed with the plan will be taken on December 9 after comments in a consultation that ended this week are considered. The council has been running a public consultation to gather local residents’ views regarding changes to its Council Tax Support Scheme in advance of getting the final scheme approved by January. The council says that over the past few years the council has had a significant cut in the amount of money it gets from its main government grant which includes funding for council tax support. This means that it has to look at the way it spends its money and, wherever possible, think about ways to reduce costs. It says changing the Council Tax Support Scheme is one of the ways it could make these savings. The council is currently considering making changes to its Council Tax Support Scheme from April 2016. This will require some people on low incomes to pay more towards their council tax. The council will use the

money saved to support its priorities of helping the most vulnerable residents in the district. In Horsham district, some 1,350 working age people on low incomes currently only have to pay 10% of their total bill. The council is now considering asking these people to pay 20% of their total bill next year (from April 2016). Pensioners and certain other vulnerable groups, such as the disabled, carers, and lone parents with children under five will remain protected and will not be affected by these changes but this means that a) the majority of working age people who need help will have to pay more towards their council tax, or b) the cost has to be spread across all council taxpayers, or c) a combination of both. Anyone who is currently entitled to council tax support and who is not in one of these protected groups is currently paying a minimum of 10% of their council tax bill. Under the new proposals, they could be expected to pay at least a minimum of 20% of their council tax bill. The payment may be lower for anyone entitled to a single person discount. The council said that once the responses to the consultation have been evaluated, and a final equality analysis has been completed, a report will be taken to the council meeting on December 9 with a formal recommendation.

Film fans at Horsham get the chance to quiz a young script writer from Dragons Green who wrote the hit Steven Spielberg Bridge of Spies film starring Tom Hanks. Matt Charman, 36, a former pupil of Forest School, Horsham, who was brought up as a youngster at Dragons Green, is staging a question and answer session at the Capitol on November 28 to raise money for Horsham Museum and Art Gallery. The film is his first screenplay and has proved a huge box office draw. His father’s side of the family made their home nearly 200 years ago at Great House Farm, Southwater, where Matt attended the local school. When younger he wrote a musical called Falling for Eve that was performed in Horsham and proved to be an important step in his rise to become a top screenwriter. The half-hour question and answer session will take place after a showing of the Cold War thriller. It is similar to an event he did in New York, but this time he has chosen Horsham. The evening will start with a reception at 7.30 pm, followed by an introduction at 8pm and

the screening at 8pm. Tickets are already on sale. Jeremy Knight, museum heritage officer, said: “This is a rare opportunity to celebrate the success of Horsham script writer Matt Charman in his home town in the venue that started his career. How often does Horsham have such an opportunity to celebrate such a success – a film that the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art has declared one of the most important films of the year.” Matt, 36, who now lives in London, told the Hollywood Reporter newspaper of his call from Spielberg: “It was the most exhilarating and nerveracking experience in my life. Suddenly, his voice is there on the phone: "Matt, I heard you've got a great story to tell me. Shoot." I gave him the pitch, and I talked him through the whole story. I got to the end of it, and he said, "How fast can you write it? Because I'd love to direct it."I turned the first draft around in about eight weeks. Next thing I know, I'm at lunch with Steven Spielberg, and he gave me these unbelievable notes — the kind you dream of as a writer.”

Valley of the Owls opens A proud memory for new air cadets

Youngsters have become fully fledged members of the 1015 (Horsham) Squadron, Air Training Corps. The recruits prepared with months of meticulous study, team building and uniform preparation, and paraded in front of family members, Garden fans will walk through a ‘Valley of the Owls’ at a lantern festival. The valley will be a new feature in December’s ‘Glow Wild Winter Lantern Festival’ at Wakehurst, Ardingly, which has been extended and added new attractions. It will run for six nights on December 4, 5, 6 and 11, 12, 13. Trees will drip with lanterns and in honour of Wakehurst’s resident Little and Tawny Owls the route will include the ‘Valley of the Owls’. Seen from the Himalayan Viewing Point, two dozen giant owl shaped lanterns, about some 100 feet up, will

realistically ‘twit’ and ‘twoo’ up and down the valley. In addition, thousands of lights will be reflected in the lakes around the estate and there will be fire-pits with spectacular displays of flames. The lights of the UK’s largest living Christmas tree will be lit. Iain Parkinson, Wakehurst conservation and woodlands manager, who helped conceive the event said “We’re looking forward to the children’s reaction to our new Valley of the Owls and in addition we’ve added a new calming Garden of Candles, designed to appeal to a wide variety of people.”

Heart to heart could save more lives The Tudor experience

Victims of heart attacks in Horsham district might have a better survival chance after the launch of a new scheme. A new Heartsafe Horsham District Communities initiative was launched at a “workshop” in the Holbrook Cub in Horsham aiming to improve cardiac arrest survival rates across the Horsham district. Hosted by Horsham District Council, the event included participation by a variety of interested community organisations including the Horsham and Mid Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group, South East Coastal Ambulance Service, Sus-

sex Fire Service, Horsham and Mid Sussex Voluntary Action, parish and neighbourhood councils and Sussex Police. This newly established community initiative will work towards raising awareness amongst residents of the importance of good heart health, fundraising to establish more defibrillators across the district and encouraging more community awareness and training in how to use these life-saving pieces of kit. Cllr Kate Rowbottom, cabinet member for community and wellbeing at Horsham District Council

said: “I am delighted that this workshop was able to take place in Horsham and I have every hope that it will begin an exciting year of awarenessraising about heart health across the district. “Approximately 133 people a year have a cardiac arrest in the Horsham district, about two a week, of whom only eight per cent get discharged home. With more CPR training and access to a defibrillator that figure can rise to at least 30%." South East Coast Ambulance Service paramedic and Clinical Operations Manager for Horsham Duncan Jones said: “It was a really positive workshop and an important stage in our ambition to improve cardiac arrest survival rates across the Horsham district. “We’ll be looking to continue the hard work which is already taking place across the region through groups including our dedicated community first responder teams, to raise awareness of the importance of everyone learning life-saving skills and the need for more defibrillators in the community. On behalf of all my colleagues we are looking forward to being a part of this important project.” Local GP and CCG Locality Chair for Horsham Dr Simon Dean said: “Most cardiac arrests happen at home. People can help improve survival rates from cardiac arrest by learning the basics of how to resuscitate someone and by using a defibrillator when available.”

More than 150 young visitors travelled back to Tudor times in Horsham. During the day at Christ’s Hospital school children visited the school’s museum where they were able to delve into its own Tudor history. They re-created recipes of the period in a food and nutrition lesson, investigated practical science in a laboratory and enjoyed a lively session of maypole dancing. After a banquet style lunch, the children joined in with one of Christ’s Hospital’s most famous traditions, ‘Band Parade’ when its

pupils march from their boarding houses into lunch to the accompaniment of the Band. The day finished with a spectacular display in the Quad of the ‘Sport of Kings’, Tudor falconry, by CJ Birds of Prey. Jessica Copley, head of history, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome schools from across the region to Christ’s Hospital to experience our Tudor Living History Day. The variety of different activities enabled the children to draw on Christ’s Hospital’s own Tudor origin and enhance their knowledge generally of this colourful period.”

Harold Nelson Baker one of many heroes in Gary Cooper’s book Among the stories unearthed by Mr Cooper is the story of Able Seaman Harold Nelson Baker, who was drowned in the first British naval sinking of World War2 that involved the total loss of a crew. He was born at Shelley Road, Horsham, on New Year’s Day 1900 and baptised at Holy Trinity Church, the only son of Nelson Charles and An-

nie Marie Baker. Joining the navy at 15 in 1915 he served on a variety of ships and although he had passed his Petty Officer examinations, he remained an Able Seaman until his death. In addition to being an enthusiastic sportsman Harold had a number of varied hobbies. He painstakingly constructed a model of the ill -fated Exeter from

more than 500 matchsticks, and when completed he presented it to his father, a gift which became Nelson’s most treasured possession. A music lover, he always played in the ship’s band. He also was one of a pierrot troupe and a member of a harmonica band. Had he not gone to war he would have taken a pension in 1939, but instead he died at 40 on what was one of

the earliest British naval casualties of the war. On January 21 , 1940, his ship HMS Exmouth, a destroyer, was escorting a merchant vessel, the SS Cyprian Prince, from Aberdeen to the naval base at Scapa Flow in the Orkneys when she was torpedoed off Tarbet Ness, Moray by a German U-boat. Exmouth’s magazine exploded, to-

tally destroying the ship with the loss of her entire crew of 189 officers and men, either fatally injured or drowned. The Exmouth was the first Royal Navy warship to be sunk with all hands lost in the Second World War. A week after the disaster, Harold’s body was among eighteen of drowned crewmen washed ashore at Lybster and he was buried at Caithness, Scotland.

scribed the new book as the “magnificent achievement of a dedicated local and military historian”. He said: “The book is like his much sought after Horsham’s Heroes of the Great War, a true monument to the servicemen and women of Horsham who died during 1939-1945. Not only does the book include the known photographs of those who died, but also short biographical accounts of what they did before they were called up. This adds real

insight in to life in Horsham during the war that for many is seen through the prism of London and other cities who suffered devastation, rather than rural Sussex.” The £35 hardback book will have a limited print run of 300 copies. The book which can be pre-ordered from Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, comes out on December 1. Mr Cooper will be signing copies of the book on December 12 at the museum.

Top marks for village’s nursery Don’t forget free flu jabs West Chiltington Montessori Nursery School has been awarded the highestlevel of achievement after its recent Ofsted inspection. The nursery is celebrating its ‘Outstanding’ report. Many of the children have followed their siblings through the nursery and it says that because of this parents and members of the local community are delighted by the result. Mrs Julia Kirk, nursery manager, said: “We take enormous pride in caring for the children here. We are in the enviable position of really enjoying being with the children and seeing them develop so fantastically.” The inspector said: “Children are highly focused and engaged in activities that truly reflect their individual interests. Staff encourage children to direct their own play and style of learning to achieve excellent outcomes.”

Residents are being urged to take up the offer of free flu vaccination before winter bites. Flu vaccinations are now underway at GP surgeries and pharmacies across the county. Everyone aged 65 or over is entitled for the free vaccine and those in this category in Sussex are generally good at taking advantage of this service. However, families with young children are also being reminded by West Sussex County Council that two, three and four year olds can get free flu nasal sprays. All children in school Years one and two will also get the vaccine through the schools vaccination programme. Christine Field, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said: “We all know children aren’t as good as adults at using tissues or washing their hands when they are ill. Young children can

spread the flu virus easily to their classmates and often to grandparents and other relatives. This can also lead to time off nursery or school which has a big impact on mums and dads.” People who also qualify are pregnant women, those with certain longterm health condition and people in long-stay residential care homes as well as carers. Mrs Field said: “Last year there was a lot of discussion about the effectiveness of the flu vaccine but it really is still the best protection we have against the flu virus. “Flu is unpleasant for anyone, but for certain people, it can cause severe illness or even be fatal. That’s why those people that are entitled to a free jab should get themselves protected as early in the flu season as possible by making an appointment...”

Job seekers reap the rewards from new club Some job seekers appear to be benefiting from a special club in Billingshurst. Fifteen people have been applying for work and at least three have found local work after attending the Work Information and Support Club. The group, based at Billingshurst library, was launched in June and provides help with ‘CV’ writing, applying for jobs and interview techniques. It was set up by Horsham District Council’s Economic Development team working in partnership with Billingshurst Community Partnership and the local ‘Think Family’ community project. Cabinet member for community and well being Cllr Kate Rowbottom said: “I am delighted that this accessible programme has engaged so many local people at such an early stage.

“If you are unemployed and living in the Billingshurst area, I recommend that you drop in and meet the team there and sign up for the programme which is proving so valuable to a wide range of jobseekers of all ages and circumstances.” The sessions take place each Wednesday morning and form a rolling programme of modules. New people are welcome to join the group at any point. The sessions are held by two trained facilitators who are there to provide support, information and to help people in whatever way they can. More details may be obtained on 07500 450458 or emailbhurst.community@btinternet.com. For information about Think Family community projects in your local area please contact Rachel Evans at Horsham District Council on rachel.evans@horsham.gov. uk or call on 01403 215638.

New netball club launched in Horsham Cassie loses five stone and conquers a mountain

A new netball club has been launched in Horsham with the support from Horsham District Council’s sports development team. The Horsham Community Netball Club is providing young netballers in

the town with a great opportunity to improve and have fun. Initially it will be looking to work with eight to 12 year olds but in time it is hoped that this age range will expand. The club’s home is Collyer’s Sixth Form College which has just benefited from improvements to its sports facilities funded by the council, Sport England and other local contributors. It will have the use of two newly floodlit outdoor netball courts and the indoor court in the adjoining sports hall. The college has excellent parking facilities to make it easy for parents to drop off and pick up their children. The head coach is experienced Michelle Peckham, supported by assistant Tracey Giblett. The club will also engage leaders from Collyer's sports student ranks

as part of its growth plans. The council's sports development team is providing the club with initial guidance and support. Cllr Jonathan Chowen, Horsham District Council deputy leader and cabinet member for leisure and culture said: “Local primary schools generate a high volume of netball activity but in the past we have lacked a junior club in Horsham to fully capitalise on it. Everything is now in place with great coaches and facilities to build a set-up that changes that situation.” The club will initially run on Wednesdays5.30-6.30pm in term time only. It started on Wednesday of this week and further information is available fromwww.hdsd.org.uk or by contacting Ian.ford@horsham. gov.uk or 07764 146338.

Mum Cassie Haswell transformed herself from lifeless to walking up Kilimanjaro mountain after losing five stone in weight. She started slimming after a day at work when she walked in and overheard unkind men laughing at her weight and saying they used to like her adding the jibe ‘but now look at it.’ Cassie, from Horsham, had fast become inactive and had lost all confidence. She tried not to go out without her husband and never wanted to get up and get moving. She says over-hearing the cruel comments was the final straw. Cassie jumped from size 10 to almost size 20, but more seriously she knew that if her life style of fast food and high sugar continued her health would suffer greatly. After going on a controlled but manageable diet under supervision she lost all her excess weight. Cas-

sie now teaches others how to tackle their weight problems. Helped by gym classes, she has tackled half marathons, mud runs, and Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Cassie said: “When I joined Weight Watchers I wouldn’t run for a bus. I had no confidence in myself. Now that I have lost this weight I have energy and a great sense of fun within me that was missing.” Carrie first started her quest to lose weight 12 years ago, and has maintained the loss, going on to lead Weight Watcher sessions and win awards. Cassie runs two current meetings in Horsham on Mondays at 9.30am in Salvation Army Hall Booth Way Horsham Tuesday 9.30am at the Cricket club, Cricket Lane. She will start a new meeting on December 10 Horsham Cricket Club at 5.30 pm.

Help for young people with emotional issues Young people with emotional problems are being offered support from a new service in West Sussex. One of the first new centres to offer the service will be in Horsham. The Youth Emotional Support service is aimed at young people aged 11-18 years and will provide support for issues relating to their emotional wellbeing, such as anxiety, isolation and mild depression, amongst a range of other concerns. It will be delivered through current FindItOut centres in Chichester, Crawley, Horsham and Worthing, with expansion to Burgess Hill, Lancing, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis by March 2016. The service will work with young people directly and help them to access face to face counselling and family support as well as creating targeted youth group programmes to help build self-esteem and deal with anxiety and anger. Patients can be referred to the centres by their GP, or alternatively can simply walk in or book an appointment. Dr. Tim Fooks, local GP and clinical lead for children and young people, at NHS Coastal West Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group said: “We are delighted that we are launching the new Youth Emotional Support for young people in Coastal West Sussex.

“As GPs, we are seeing increasing numbers of young people with mental health concerns, and it is vital that we have appropriate help and support available – both for them and their families.”

The service will work with young people directly and help them to access face to face counselling and family support Dr. Sue Torry, local GP and clinical lead for mental health at NHS Coastal West Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group said: “Young people will be able to walk into these centres and get advice and information to help them to manage difficulties they may face, and be supported to live happy and healthy lives.” Peter Evans, cabinet member for children ‘Start of Life’ said: “Mental health is an issue that is brushed aside too easily – this new service will be of enormous benefit to the young people of West Sussex and help them throughout their lives.”

Children tasked to name new gritter

2014 winner ‘Bitterly Gritterly’

Operation Fortress works to save lives Operation Fortress is under way to combat trespass and danger on rail lines. In recent years British Transport Police has seen an increase in trespass and other related route crime during the school holidays. It reminded parents during the recent half term to make sure they know where their children were and to ensure they knew about the potential hazards posed by the railway network. The transport police officers and Network Rail staff work throughout the year to help educate young people that playing on or near the railway could have fatal consequences. Operation Fortress will continue until the end of the year has now begun to further tackle trespass through education, engagement

and crime prevention. It covers London and the South East, including West Sussex. Chief Inspector Tom Naughton said: “The railway is a predominantly safe place and is regularly patrolled by BTP and Network Rail in a CCTV rich environment. Inappropriate use of the railway can have devastating consequences to the individuals involved and others. It can also cause delays to fellow passengers, right across the network. Our main aim is to prevent anyone accessing the network when they shouldn’t be.” Officers have been carrying out increased patrols in a bid to ward off potential trespassers and undertake track walks to identify any damage to fences that need repairing. Darren Cottrell, Network Rail

head of level crossing safety, said: "We have one of the safest railways in Europe but level crossings remain a risk, where the road or a path meets the tracks. We're spending £100m on improving level crossing safety but tragically still a number of young people are injured or killed each year, many seemingly distracted by their mobile phones, music or conversation. This half term we urge everyone to take care and stay safe at level crossings, making sure you stop, look and listen before you cross."

Children in every West Sussex school are being challenged to name a gritter this winter. They have to come up with something at least as witty as previous winners such Bitterly Gritterly, Freddie Salted and Nitty Gritty. West Sussex County Council contractor Balfour Beatty is running the annual contest. It wants to rename three of the yellow gritters in its fleet. The three pupils who come up with the best names will each receive a High Street voucher. Their school will also win a grit bin, grit salt to fill it and snow shovels. The past winners have been 2014 Bitterly Gritterly, Olaf, Freddie Salted; 2013 Nitty Gritty, Gritter Bug, Snow Buster; 2012 Thaw, Gritney Spears, Great Gritain; 2011 Crystal-ator, Mr Gritty, Cosmic Cruncher. As long as you avoid the the names above, you have a chance to win. Schools can email pene.mather@ westsussex.gov.uk for a copy of the entry form to distribute. The deadline for entries is Tuesday, November 24.

A gritter will arrive at the winning schools on Friday, November 27, to show off its new name to everyone. Visitors from Balfour Beatty will also give a talk to the school on how important it is to ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ this winter.

The three pupils who come up with the best names will receive a voucher County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, John O’Brien, said: “This is a great contest which provides some fabulous names from every school that enters. “We need some new ones to join the likes of Gritney Spears and Freddie Salted in keeping our roads safe in winter. “The competition gives us a chance to visit schools and show children how to keep safe during the colder months.”

Rotary raise 5k for Children in Need

The Rotary Club of Horsham recently organised a BBC Children in Need fundraising event at Gatwick Airport. 103 volunteers made up of Rotarians, their family and friends, Forest School students and mascots and their minders descended upon Gatwick airport. The collection and activities covered both terminals of the airport and was carried out around some fun performances from Children’s TV stars Dick n Dom and Dave Benson Phillips who helped draw a crowd and entertain Chestnut Tree House children and their families during a tea party laid

on by Gatwick Airport. Pudsey bear toured the airport throughout, taking the shuttle between terminals, meeting and greeting young and old alike often accompanied by one of the other six large furry mascots, including Horsham’s very own ‘Ringo’, who were all on duty adding to the fun atmosphere. The collection and activities covered over 22 hours with a good number of the volunteers, including Pudsey himself, going through security into the more lucrative shops, restaurants and bars airside. Most importantly £5000 was raised and will be added to Rotary’s overall

total for the year as main partners of BBC Children in Need. Horsham Rotary Club and Horsham District Council also organised a Children in Need party in the Carfax on Thursday October 29 that featured Pudsey, Dave Benson Phillips and a number of Halloween activities. Despite the awful weather hundreds of families had fun and added to the funds raised. The BBC sent a film crew to Horsham and a short clip will be shown on the main BBC Children in Need TV show on Friday November 13; so if you were there in the Carfax tune in and you may see yourself on TV.

Gardening superstition and beliefs Auntie seeks funds for nephew’s new leg guy deakins Gardening

With Halloween, Guy Fawkes, All Souls and All Saint's past we now only have the Feast of Brian on December 10th (He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!) and Christmas to look forward to. But lo, look to the calendar and there are other portents. We are amongst a Friday 13th! That most unlucky of days where all manner of badness occurs. Except it isn't. This odd numerical invention - like the fashion of the Christmas Tree - can only be traced back to the Victorian era and no further. Thirteen is actually a very lucky number. There were always thirteen in Mr J. Nazareth's troop. So is thirteen evil? With certainty hardly any mention of thirteen was required for a pagan coven. Indeed thirteen before the reformation was required for church convents and according to Judaism, God has thirteen attributes. There are thirteen planting moons a year, the 'Blue' lucky to some. Not forgetting, there are the 'Thirteen' in Game of Thrones too, charged as they are with the protection of Quarth. Of course, fiction aside, the number is also of great import, being one of the Fibonacci number's - that holy grail in the golden section of design and a number that reoccurs throughout nature. But why is all this important to you the humble gardener? Because the garden

May pearson

is awash with superstition! At this time of year, for example, it is said to be very lucky to catch a falling leaf. "But", I hear you say, "What, if I stand under an oak with a net. Will I win the lottery?" One source is decidedly in favour of multiples, stating you will have a happy month for each one caught. Perhaps thirteen would be auspicious? The evergreens are another source of delight and misfortune. It is lucky to plant a holly near your house (now is the time to plant evergreens.) However, do not bring holly into your house before Christmastide for fear of bringing death with it. If and when you do bring some in, the type will dictate who is the master of the house. If the holly be smooth, the wife is in charge. If the holly is prickly then the man is master of all. Mistletoe that most Christmassy of plants, actually has only vague men-

tion. It is certainly mentioned as lucky, but only accompanied by holly. Kissing under a sprig was an invention of the early 1800's and may bring pregnancy to the unwary. The British Druids never had any connection according to Pliny's writing - any reference relating to the Gaul's of Asterix fame. But let's leave Christmas luck, as it is barely November. Parsley is an unlucky plant all year round and should not be transferred for fear of bringing death. Primroses should not be grown indoors for the same reason. Nor should one ever carry a spade on one's shoulders. "If in your house a man shoulders a spade, on you or your kinsfolk a grave is half made." All that said, it is all just the words of men without trust in science. Being a rational man, I now only follow one rule. If you have machinery, tie a sprig of lucky fennel to it. I am assured, it will never, ever need a mechanic.

A Horsham Aunt, in a quest to help raise funds for her nephew, will tomorrow, be fundraising at Tesco Broadbridge Heath. Gemma Lee, together with a band of volunteers, will be offering to help pack customers' shopping, in return for small donations to Billy's fund. Billy Lee, who now lives in Cambridgeshire, was diagnosed with aggressive bone cancer, in November 2014. His only chance of surviving was to have an immediate full leg and half hip amputation. Without help, he would spend the rest of his life on crutches or in a wheelchair, as the NHS is unable to fund a prosthetic limb for an amputation of this kind. After extensive research, a prosthetic limb and a UK clinic, that are able to give Billy his life back, were found. The ‘Helix 3D’ leg and hip prosthetic will be an initial cost of £78,000, with 5 yearly servicing and part replacements, costing £18,500. Mrs Lee, of Broadbridge Heath, comments: "Since Billy is the sole beneficiary of the 'Billy's back on his own 2 feet Fund', this renders the fund as ineligible for charitable status. This, in turn, means that charity giving websites, such as JustGiving,

can not be used. However, donations can be made online at GoFundMe" adding, "Please come along and show your support. Any donation, no matter how small, is very gratefully received!

Brian Blessed to play leading role at Elephantastic auction With under two weeks to go until the much anticipated Elephantastic auction, the campaign’s organisers are delighted to announce that renowned actor Brian Blessed will play the leading role of the auctioneer. He will be alongside TV’s Bargain Hunt’s Jonathan Pratt, who is also the Managing Director of Bellman’s Auctioneers and Valuers of Wisborough Green. Taking place on Saturday 21st November at St. John’s Church in Horsham, the auction will see 187 elephants (in 135 lots) being sold off at the event to raise vital funds for over 65 charities and local good causes. However, for those unable to attend the auction event, a specialist online bidding site has been set up at www. elephantastic.org.uk and interested parties should submit their bids by 10pm on Wednesday 18th November (which will be allocated as starting bids at the live auction event). Highest current bids for each elephant together with their pictures will be found in the ‘ Our Elephants’ section. Alternatively, for those who can’t bear to see their desired elephant fall into the hands of a competitive

bidder or who cannot be present at the auction, maximum bids can be emailed to horshamrotary@btconnect.com by Thursday 19th November…… full details of the bidding and auction process can be requested by emailing Horsham Rotary. In order for potential elephant owners to view the stunning creations that require a loving home the organisers - The Rotary Club of Horsham, wildlife Charity The Born Free Foundation and Billingshurst’s

creative marketing company, PMW Communications - have gathered up the herds in the ex-‘Cloth Shop’ in the Carfax giving visitors the opportunity to pick their favourites. The elephant creations will be available to view at this location until Thursday 19th November. This week we spotlight : Elephant Name/Nickname: Hope & Inspiration / Marmalade Current Owner: Holbrook Club Charity: Hope for Emily Artist: Zoe Keable - an extremely talented young local artist who studied BTEC Art and Design at Collyers Sixth Form College and is now studying at the Arts University Bournemouth. The Milner family from Horsham is fundraising in order to raise money so that two-year-old Emily Milner can travel to America and have a life changing operation. Emily was born prematurely at 29 weeks and suffered brain damage at birth. She has cerebral palsy and is tube fed,

cannot sit, crawl or walk and is the size of a 10-month-old baby. Emily’s mother, Nickie, says that Emily is a determined little princess and is hoping to raise £65,000 so that Emily can have a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) operation to be able to walk. Nickie says: “Emily needs to be aged three to four to have the operation and we need £6,000 just for her to be assessed to see if she will be eligible. We have a year or so to fundraise so we’ve just thrown ourselves into it. The NHS doesn’t provide everything and the equipment often needs adapting. The operation isn’t available in the UK so we are aiming to go to America for it.’ Elephant Name/Nickname: Art and Colours of Africa / Mumbo Jumbo Current Owner: Horsham Artists Open Studios (HAOS) Charity: HAOS will use the funds raised from their elephants to help budding young artists and promote their work.

Artist: Angela Brittain and HAOS artists Once again the fantastic local artists who comprise ‘Horsham Artist Open Studios’ were the first to promote elephantastic when they created their family of elephants in full public view in Swan Walk….. and what colourful elephants they are, truly catching the spirit of Africa. Elephant Name/Nickname: Kandula / Kandy Current Owner: La Source Charity: Air Ambulance Artist: Martin Nee The design inspiration for ‘kandy’ came from the chosen name KANDULA…a famous elephant from history attributed with unifying Sri Lanka, so Martin wanted to create the idea of a ceremonial elephant in all it’s finery. The Howdah ( the thing on top) gives it, not only a bit of added interest, but is just the right height to sit at the end of a sofa and place a glass on! By the way…. it glows in the dark ! Charged by UV many of La Source’s customers have testified to it’s eerie glow in the evenings. Please bid high and keep the Air Ambulance guys in the air.

Clipper Race features in Ridley Scott commercial The UK company behind the Clipper Race, the world’s longest ocean adventure, sailed by trained amateurs and known as one of the planet’s toughest endurance challenges, is to feature in 'Exporting is GREAT', a new government initiative which launched on Monday. Clipper Ventures Chief Executive, William Ward, features in one of twelve separate films, produced in partnership with Ridley Scott Associates, showcasing real, live export opportunities that are waiting for UK businesses overseas. “I am very proud that the Clipper Race can help to showcase the opportunities for UK companies to export overseas,” commented Ward, “Travelling 'round the world on the Clipper Race, I know the demand is out there, and want other UK businesses to know that too.” Exporting is GREAT aims to inspire and support 100,000 additional UK businesses to sell their goods and services overseas by 2020. Conrad Bird, Director of the GREAT Britain Campaign, said: “Exporting is GREAT is our most ambitious exporting campaign ever. It reflects both the Government’s and the wider business community’s commitment to increasing the number of UK companies exporting. Exporting is good for businesses – those that do so are more productive, innovative and resilient – and this is critical to the UK economy.” Ward created the Clipper Race as a

platform for global business, alongside the sporting competition countries and companies participate in a ‘floating’ trade mission, which visits 14 ports on six continents, over the best part of a year on the 40,000 nautical mile circumnavigation. The GREAT campaign is in the midst of its second race partnership, with one of the twelve identical 70foot Clipper Race yachts branded GREAT Britain, as a focal point for promoting the UK around the globe. Destinations on the Clipper Race route include Brazil, South Africa, Australia, Vietnam, China, the USA and Europe. The unique global platform positions the UK as the best place to do business with, invest in, study in and visit. The campaign aims to turn the UK into the world’s greatest exporting nation, capturing the imagination of the public, boosting business confidence and national pride and empowering more UK companies to go out and succeed in global markets. “By highlighting the huge appetite that exists, for UK goods and services throughout the world, and identifying thousands of specific opportunities, we are aiming to create a step change in awareness among UK businesses and ultimately get many of them to export for the first time,” added Bird. Filmed around the world in locations as varied as Qatar, France and Malaysia, Ward is in good company with other films in the series, fea-

turing some of the UK’s high profile export champions and entrepreneurs including Kelly Hoppen MBE, Ron Dennis, Professor Brian Cox, and Ken Hom. Ward was filmed when the tenth edition of the biennial Clipper Round the World Yacht Race reached Rio de Janeiro last month, talking about marine engineering opportunities for UK businesses available right now in Brazil. The British owned Clipper Race was founded by Ward in 1995, with legendary yachtsman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. He was named a GREAT Britain Ambassador by the Prime Minister at No 10 Downing Street last year, in recognition of his personal support and contribution to the GREAT campaign. Ward spoke of how he welcomed the new exporting initiative: “The UK is a trading nation, it's in our heritage, and people trust us. I had my first major exporting experience when I went to China, aged 19 on a business trip. I can't tell you how frightened I was but I soon discovered the people there were friendly and they wanted to do business. I ended up making some great relationships which I still hold valuable to this day." and added: “I learned early on that to run a successful business you have to get out there and try. It might feel like there are too many barriers but you can probably double, or even treble your business, if you extend beyond your

comfort zone. There are markets all over the world that are desperate for something from the UK, the UK brand means quality." The new campaign will highlight hundreds of live business opportunities, which will be available on a new Government platform www.exportingisgreat.gov.uk with a range of content to help exporters. The television campaign will run throughout the rest of November,

‘Both Sides Now’ is a brand new show from two very talented musical theatre performers and singers, Stephen Rahman-Hughes and Lee Mead. It promises to be a night of music from many great artists, who have influenced the guys’ love of music over the years. It’s the music they have grown up with – inspired them – as well as songs which have featured throughout their careers in the music business. This is not a show of West End classics, which has been done so many times before. It’s a show about two guys who are very best friends, who have had amazing experiences throughout their extensive careers. They now come together to share a night of friendship, fun, some great stories and their favourite music with you. Come on a musical ride of wonderful arrangements, with elements of jazz, soul, pop and more – the music of Stevie Wonder, Billie Holiday, Tony Bennett - with their take on more current songs and artists too. Performance takes place on November 29. To book, please contact The Capitol Theatre, Horsham.

This week the Chartered Physios at Cranfold discuss common knee problems and how to look after them. Ligament strain. This is usually caused by overstretching the knee in a sideways direction – such as being caught in a rugby tackle. There will be a gradual swelling of the knee joint and pain on weight bearing, particularly when you move the leg sideways. This responds well to ice, anti-inflammatories, gentle quads exercises and ultrasound. It will take about 6 weeks to heal fully and the knee should be protected from sideways stresses during this time with gradual return to sport beginning with straight line activities only. Cartilage (meniscal) tears. These are caused by a rotational twist on knee. There may be a click, followed by fairly immediate swelling and pain on weight bearing. Many of these minor meniscal injuries settle with physiotherapy, but if the knee is locking then an operation might be required to remove the piece of torn cartilage via keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery. Recovery times are around 7 weeks depending on the severity of the tear. Anterior (or posterior) cruciate ligament injuries. This often happens in sport where the lower leg or foot is blocked and the upper body continues to travel forwards through momentum. The ligaments, situated in the centre of the knee joint become ruptured with a characteris-

tic “pop” sound. There is immediate swelling and a feeling of instability in the leg, which will often give way. Initial treatment is ice, strengthening exercises and restoring full mobility of the knee before any surgery to repair the ligament is considered.

There are many different causes all with differing treatments. For further advice on your knee problem, please call Surgical options vary, but is often by using a piece of the patient’s own hamstring muscle as repair tissue for the ligament. Rehabilitation is long, however most patients would expect to return to running at about 3 months with full return to sport in 6-12 months. Anterior knee pain syndrome is felt around the kneecap. It is usually made worse by sitting for prolonged periods, playing sports or by climbing stairs. It is commonly caused by a combination of poor muscle strength, tight iliotibial band (outside of the thigh) and poor biomechanics of the foot. All these should be addressed with stretches, exercises, and orthotics if applica-

ble, with physios often using tape to help re-programme the knee’s biomechanics. Osteoarthritis In older people, repeated attacks of knee pain are likely to be “wear and tear” arthritis. Osteoarthritis causes damage to the protective surface of the knee and swelling of the tissues in and around the joints. Osteoarthritis can sometimes affect younger people, especially those who are overweight. Treatment is to regain full knee movement, strengthen supporting muscles, ice to control pain and swelling and advice on lifestyle and weight loss if necessary. Anti inflammatories for short periods can be useful. Osgood-Schlatter's disease Swelling and tenderness over the bony bump just below the kneecap is known as Osgood-Schlatter's disease. This is a common cause of knee pain and swelling in children, particularly teenage boys who are very sporty and overstress the tendon attachment while in their growing phase. Treatment is rest, footwear assessment, stretches, strengthening and local ice treatment. It will settle as the child matures but will need to be managed to allow these sporty people to continue to play in the meantime. There are many different causes – all with differing treatments. Located in East Street, this restaurant has been totally transformed and features artwork paying tribute to Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the major Romantic poets, who was born in Horsham. Each PizzaExpress restaurant is individually designed

– often using well known places, people or historical events from the area as the basis. The interior of the Horsham restaurant has a range of collage artworks inspired by Shelley’s poetry and his story. Sponsored by

Welcome to our monthly ‘Pets Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about the commitment of buying a puppy. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.

RSPCA

Have you decided to buy a puppy? How exciting for your family to be making the long-term commitment to get a dog. Have you thought about what type of dog is right for your lifestyle? You’ll need to make sure the puppy will be happy where you live and you have the space for an adult dog. Puppies need exercise, training, play and company. Does your lifestyle mean you can offer an active dog the time they’ll need? If you've decided to buy from a dog breeder ensure that you’re buying a happy and healthy puppy. A Puppy Contract (available from www.rspca. org.uk) can help you avoid becoming another victim of the puppy trade. Before you visit, phone and ask some questions, like did they breed the puppy and are they kept where they were bred? Have the puppies or their parents had any health problems? Have the puppies been treated for worms and given their first vaccinations before going home? Have the parents been screened for any inherited problems known to be a problem in that breed? Do the puppies have any form of identification, such as microchips? When you meet the puppies, make sure the mum looks healthy. Look for clues that the puppy was actually born there. Ask to see certificates of screening for problem diseases, vaccination and microchipping records. Check for any signs of illness; look for a happy interactive puppy. Spend plenty of time with the dog and don't feel rushed, they'll be your responsibility for many years to come. Don't buy on the first visit. Never buy a puppy if you have doubts about the breeder or situation - buying the puppy will only fund their illegal operation. Puppy trafficking is big business with dealers getting rich and leaving a trail of dead puppies and heartbroken families in their wake. Huge numbers of sick, under-age and dying puppies are being illegally trafficked into the UK each year. These puppies have had a very unpleasant start to life. Many are born on puppy farms across Europe, their mothers used as breeding machines to keep up with the high demand for puppies in the UK. In many cases the puppies are too young to be away from their mothers when they are loaded onto vans before travelling hundreds of miles. Just imagine for a second how frightening that would be. When you’ve chosen your puppy, you’ll need to get everything ready at home. You should find a vet and book them in for a check up. You'll need to make sure you guide and train your puppy to develop into happy and much loved companion. If they aren’t trained and socialised early, they could end up being afraid of strangers, unfamiliar dogs and even their own shadow! Gwen Bailey’s The Perfect Puppy book is useful for helping you to enjoy your new puppy. This is just the beginning of the exciting adventure of dog ownership. Check out rspca.org.uk/dogs for lots of helpful advice on dog ownership.

Arun Veterinary Group say bye to a very special cat We recently had to say goodbye to a very special cat. Fred found his owners Father Keith and Margaret in 2004. He quickly wrapped them round his paw and became the king of the house. All had been well until they noticed him drinking more than usual. He had always been a very large cat and on his first appointment with us, Fred weighed in at a whopping 10kg. In 2005, he was diagnosed with diabetes and managing such a strong willed cat proved inherently tricky. Indeed, Fred was soon nicknamed 'Freddie Kruger' due to his desire to show the nurses and vets his claws!! Fred required several visits to have 2 hourly blood tests, enabling us to monitor his glucose levels Stabi-

lisation did not prove easy, especially with his daily desire for fresh cooked fish. In 2009, Father Keith noticed that Fred was showing signs of lethargy as well as anorexia (he would not even eat his fish!) and further tests diagnosed him with triaditis. Feline triaditis is commonly seen in conjunction with diabetes and is a term used to describe the concurrent presence of inflammatory disease of the liver, the pancreas, and the intestines. He was admitted to hospital and it took a while to see an improvement in his condition. Fred had extensive eye lid surgery in 2012 to remove a cutaneous hemangiosarcoma (a form of skin cancer). Although the cause of cutaneous hemangiosarcoma is unknown, we are aware that light coloured and short coated cats are more predisposed than others. In addition to his ailments, Fred also had treatment for dental disease, pancreatitis and further skin tumours. Following a period of stabilisation Fred was subsequently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid glands) in 2013. This is a very common disorder of older cats, caused by an increase in production of thyroid hormones from the thyroid glands, which are situated in the neck. The affected thyroid gland was removed and all seemed well, until... Fred's blood test revealed he had gone from a hyperthyroid state, to normal to subsequently becoming hypothyroid. Although hypothyroidism is a common condition for humans, hypothyroid-

ism in cats is quite uncommon. The symptoms of hypothyroidism may come on slowly and be misinterpreted as signs of natural aging in elderly cats. Further medication was required to stabilise his thyroid hormone levels. In the same year we also diagnosed Fred with chronic renal disease, which leads to a gradual and irreversible deterioration of kidneys over a period of months to years. Chronic kidney disease is commonly encountered following a period of stabilisation related to hyperthyroidism. Sadly Fred also battled against acromegaly, a condition which results from excessive secretion of growth hormone. Acromegaly in cats is caused by a growth hormone–secreting tumour of the anterior pituitary gland These tumours grow slowly and may be present for a long time before clinical signs appear. Fred was blessed with fantastic, dedicated owners who along with our help, tackled eight different conditions! We were all grateful that Father Keith and Margaret's daughter in law is a veterinary specialist in diabetes. He was one lucky cat. On the 24th September 2015 at the grand age of 20, we all had to say a tearful goodbye to Fred. We all miss him dearly but look back with fondness in remembrance of his spirited and amazing character. We would like to pay tribute to Father Keith and Margaret for enabling Fred to live a life of luxury that he had grown accustomed to despite all his illnesses.

Could your dog be suffering from hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is a condition which typically affects middleaged, medium to large breed dogs. It is caused by a decreased production of thyroid hormone (thyroxine) from the thyroid gland located in the neck. Thyroid hormone plays a very important role in the body – it regulates your dog’s metabolism and affects many different areas of the body. In hypothyroidism there is too little thyroid hormone which causes changes in metabolism and a wide range of signs. These signs develop gradually, and may sometimes be missed or attributed to old age. What are the signs of hypothyroidism? - Dogs with hypothyroidism tend to be lethargic or sluggish and reluctant to go for walks. They are said to have a tragic facial expression. Hypothyroid dogs usually gain weight even though their diet has remained the same and some of these dogs will fail to lose weight despite having their food intake reduced. Dogs with hypothyroidism may become more sensitive to the cold e.g. lie close to the central heating to stay warm. Changes in the skin and hair coat are very common signs of hypothyroidism. Affected dogs can have dry, dull coats and patchy areas of hair loss. The hair loss is often first noticed in

places undergoing friction, such as the neck in dogs wearing collars. Often the signs of hypothyroidism are quite varied and can mimic lots of other illnesses How is hypothyroidism diagnosed? - The condition is usually diagnosed by a combination of clinical signs and blood tests. Finding a lower than normal level of thyroid hormone (thyroxine) in the blood can point towards hypothyroidism although additional tests may be required to confirm the diagnosis as some other conditions can affect thyroid hormone level How is hypothyroidism treated? - Hypothyroidism can be easily managed but needs lifelong treatment and consists of hormone replacement with synthetic thyroid hormone. Initially your dog will require regular visits to the practice for monitoring and possibly blood tests which are vital if treatment is going to be successful. Your dog’s thyroid hormone level will need to be measured to determine if the dose of medication needs changing. Once the appropriate dose has been determined, visits will not be required as often. If you think your dog is showing any of the signs above or may have hypothyroidism book a check up with your vet now.

Atkinson’s hat-trick Confident Horsham clean up Staines fails to clinch win Saturday November 7 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Div. 1 Staines Ladies 2 - 5 Horsham Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter

Buoyed by their emphatic cup win last week Horsham move up to fourth, making short work of Staines with some strong attacking play, condemning them to the penultimate spot in the table. Staines found the net just before half time but Horsham led 2-1 at the break and then dominated the second half to run out comprehensive winners. For Horsham Suzy Clapp scored two open play goals with good strikes before Steph Dent also bagged a pair from close range. Then Lauren Keefe put the icing on the cake, winning a great one to one battle with the opposition keeper. Elle Blakesley told the District Post: “This was an excellent win for us – the team’s best performance to date. Staines got both of their two goals from breakaways against the run of play. We had the majority of the action so they were a bit lucky, really!”

Lauren Keefe scored in Horsham’s win at Staines Horsham are back at Broadbridge Heath tomorrow (Saturday November 14) for a 13.30 pushback against Havant, rooted to the bottom with just one point having lost six of their

seven games and drawn one, scoring four goals and conceding 25 in the process – both statistics being by far the worst in the league. Meanwhile unbeaten Surbiton remain top.

Honesty South heads an impressive medal haul for Horsham Gymnastics Artistic Gymnastics Six members of Horsham Gymnastics Centre Women's Artistic Squad competed at the English Bronze and Silver Championships in Leicester last weekend with all achieving a top 10 placing on at least one apparatus. In the Bronze 11-12 year section, which had over 40 competitors, Millie Craven finished in 22nd place overall with a 10th place on the asymmetric bars. Charley Bargman competed well claiming 7th place overall, 7th place on vault and received a bronze medal for her 3rd place on the floor. Saturday November 7 – South League Premier Div. 2 Marlow Men’s 1st XI 5 - 5 Horsham Fortunes fluctuated throughout but after leading 3-1 Horsham should have won yet Marlow snatched an ill-deserved draw at the death. A recent lack of goals has inhibited Horsham’s progress so to net five times was most welcome, yet frustrating that it did not secure a much needed victory. John Burroughs promptly scored the first goal and Horsham were soon two up, courtesy of a Matt Hough penalty. Marlow reduced the deficit but Cirdec Atkinson put Horsham further ahead with a win surely beckoning. Marlow, though had other ideas, equalising and going on to

lead 4-3, benefiting from Horsham defensive errors - until Cirdec completed a fine hat-trick, first by overcoming a pair of defenders and then back sticking a high, pin point Freddie Campbell supply. With Horsham back in front chicken counters were celebrating a Horsham win – only for Marlow to hatch another egg to draw 5-5. Exasperated Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “It irks to see us playing good hockey again, getting in front and then allowing the opposition to muscle in on our rightful win. This is a very competitive league with few easy pickings so we need to make sure that we close games down rather than letting them slip through our fingers.” Tomorrow (November 14) Horsham, now fifth, play Eastbourne at Broadbridge Heath with a 12 noon push back. After losing all six games Eastbourne are marooned pointless at the bottom of the table with an embarrassing goal difference.

Horsham Gymnastic Centre’s artistic squad had a great competition

13 year Silver category. Scarlett had a few errors on the day but finished in 11th place overall and 9th place on the asymmetric bars. Fran finished in overall 16th place and achieved 4th place on the vault, just 0.1 away from the bronze medal. The Silver 10-11 years saw Poppy Griggs and Honesty South both compete extremely well, with Poppy placing 11th overall and 9th on the asymmetric bars. Honesty had a fantastic day, coming away with 5 English Championship medals. Honesty placed 2nd overall, 3rd on the vault and floor, 2nd on the bars and was crowned the English Silver level beam Champion with a score nearly 2 marks ahead of the silver medallist.

Gary Moore seriously injured by horse Horse Racing Martin Read – Sports Reporter Local horse racing trainer Gary Moore is recovering after being kicked several times in the back by one of his own charges. The accident happened last Thursday (November 5) at 59 year old Gary’s Cisswood Stables when he was helping his wife Jayne up onto another horse. He was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit at East Surrey Hospital, Redhill with broken ribs, a punctured lung and bruised spleen. None know more about horses than the Moore family, the accident underlining the dangerous unpredictability of the animals. Gary’s father Charlie trained at Brighton and Gary himself rode over 200 winners before becoming a top trainer both on the flat and over fences, notably sending Sire de Grugy victorious in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham. Sons Ryan, Jamie and

Gary Moore is recovering from his injuries Joshua are jockeys and daughter Hayley is an amateur rider. Ryan has been champion flat jockey three times in addition to winning prestigious titles abroad, including the iconic Melbourne Cup, but was also injured earlier this year – sidelined with a neck problem at Newmarket a hitherto happy hunting ground.

Speaking last weekend Joshua had encouraging news of his father, saying: “He’s having a lot of antibiotics and pain killers and is a bit groggy but nothing worse than that.” Gary Moore has been released from hospital and is now recuperating at home.

Horsham rattle league favourites Sevenoaks Photos by Trish Barber

Saturday November 7 - London 2 South East Horsham 19 – 25 Sevenoaks Horsham came close to causing the shock of the day until they conceded a late try against promotion favourites Sevenoaks. The Kent side currently boast a 100% winning record and top the table but this was their narrowest margin of victory in the season to date. Horsham head coach Nick Stocker summed up the game by saying: “It was two really evenly matched sides going at it hammer and tongs and the result could have gone either way.” On a wet and windy day Sevenoaks kicked off into the elements and the pattern of the game was soon established. Horsham were exerting pressure in the tight but were conceding scrum penalties when seemingly having the upper hand. Horsham were conceding penalties regularly and when finally penalised after 26 minutes for not rolling away within kicking range Isaac Winter made no mistake. Ollie Harcus was the first to fall on the ball following a clearance kick and passed to Johnny Ordidge who moved the ball out to Mike Watts who dummied his man on the outside and then sliced open the Sevenoaks defence by cutting in on an inside angle to score under the posts with the try converted by Joe Wilde. The lead however was to be short lived because Sevenoaks responded immediately. The visitors kicked long from the restart and from Horsham’s exit play Johnson cleared

diagonally to the half way line which Wilde chased hard but the Sevenoaks left winger, Dom Saunders, chipped him as he approached and as the ball bounced kindly he kicked again and showing dexterous footballing skills to kick the ball over the line to score a superb individual try in difficult conditions and regain the lead. The touch line conversion from Winter saw Sevenoaks take a 10-7 lead into half time. The second half was as thrilling

On a wet and windy day Sevenoaks kicked off into the elements and the pattern of the game was soon established. Horsham were exerting pressure in the tight but were conceding scrum penalties when seemingly having the upper hand and keenly contested as the first. Sevenoaks extended their lead with a penalty as a Matt McCabe was yellow carded for persistent offences but Horsham made light of their numerical disadvantage. Jonny Whiting made the crucial injection of pace and found Wilde who cut in to beat two men from 15 yards and score under the posts and then convert his own try to regain a 14-13 lead. Michael Tredgett made a wel-

Declan Nwachukwu’s try gave Horsham a 6 point lead come return on 60 minutes to replace Ollie Harcus for his first game for nine months having recovered from a broken wrist. With Horsham back to full strength Johnson kicked ahead and from the next phase Horsham spun the ball left for McCabe to straighten the line and send Declan Nwachukwu over to extend the lead to 19-13. Horsham then switched off defensively as within a minute of the restart, Sevenoaks moved the ball wide for full back Rob Streather to score a well taken try which was unconverted to reduce the deficit to 19-18. Then with ten minutes remaining one of the Sevenoaks back row players made a storming 30 yard run upfield before he was hauled down to create the position for Winter to step between two tacklers and score. This set up an exhilarating finale as Horsham’s attacks became increasingly frantic as they eschewed penalty kicks at goal needing to score the winning try but without success. Stocker concluded, “I felt we dominated in the scrum and Arun Thompson put pressure on them in the line-out. Declan looked sharp and beat his winger every time and Mike Watts was also making line breaks. We were hurt by the penalty count against us, especially in the first half when we had the wind and didn’t capitalise on our dominance. The lack of penalties gained when we were on top in the scrums kept them in it. The penalties conceded and handing errors stopped us building momentum but it was a still a tough visit for them.” Horsham’s next game is away to struggling Ashford on November 14. Horsham Team: Watts; Wilde, Ordidge (Hart 65), McCabe, Nwachukwu; J Johnson, Mills; Barber (Fairs 65), Stone, Talbot; Whiting, Harcus (Tredgett 60); Smith, Thompson, Gaynor.

Horsham gave Sevenoaks their toughest game so far

Win maintains Borough’s 100 per cent home record Saturday November 7 – London 3 South East Pulborough 34 - 10 Uckfield Rugby Martin Read – Sports Reporter Pulborough won the toss and fully capitalised on the benefit of the slope - and the wind and rain at their backs - to put up an unassailable early lead enabling them to run out strong winners after keeping a clean sheet before the break. Ben Miller scored two tries in the first 10 minutes, one converted by Frazer Oliphant-Hope, then skipper Simon Burfiend burst through a gap to get over the line from the 22, Frazer again obliging. Ben was subsequently tackled round the neck resulting in a penalty try. Uckfield

came out more determinedly in the second half, making minor inroads but the result was never in doubt, especially when Borough Club Captain Guy Baxter juggled the ball over a defender’s head to score a converted try under the posts. Simon Burfiend told the District Post: “We were expecting it to be closer - this was a brilliant bonus point win for us securing our 100% home record. Pre season we set out our stall to be strong contenders and we’re fourth now, where we want to be. We’ve got some tough games coming up and now need to replicate our home form when we go away.” Tomorrow (Saturday November 14) Borough are back on the road with a visit to Heathfield & Waldron, third in the table despite losing their last two games.

Lions continue winning run after a solid victory Saturday November 7 - Sussex Spitfire 1 Horsham Lions 32 – 12 Hellingly Rugby Dave Smith – Sports Editor Horsham Lions continued their recent run of good form with a tough fought win played in very poor weather conditions over East Sussex side, Hellingly. The visitors opened the scoring with an unconverted try that was matched shortly after by the Lions when Andy Carvell dived over a ruck to score. Sam Shepherd then put Horsham in front with a try after a good individual run, again the try went unconverted and the teams went in at 10-5 to Horsham at the break. After a few minutes of the restart Shepherd got his second try after a powerful run; this time completing the conversion for 17

- 5. Now in the ascendancy Lions quickly added to the score through Scott Price putting the score to 225. A further Price try and Shepherd conversion was followed by a fine piece of handling and turn of speed from George Palmer to put Horsham lions into a comfortable 32 – 5 lead. In the last minute Hellingly grabbed their second try of the game which was converted leaving the Lions to celebrate a 32 – 12 victory. Lions manager Andy Layzell said, “Hellingly was a tough nut to crack, an experienced team with strength and power up front and the weather conditions in the first half played into their hands, but the Lions superior handling, pace and stamina told in the end with the Lions running in 6 trys. My man of the match was Sam Shepherd for his all round game and influence on the game that proved the difference for us today.”

Hawks dazzle Worthing in a high-scoring thriller U16 Horsham Hawks 82 – 78 Worthing D&D Basketball Dave Smith – Sports Editor Following on from their impressive away victory to Eastbourne 10 days previously a confident Hawks U16 squad hosted Worthing D&D Dazzlers at Tanbridge. Dazzlers took an early 10-4 lead only for Hawks to respond with an 8 zip run courtesy of Will Putner, Ellie Hutchinson and Kieran Lee to go ahead 12-10. The remainder of a high scoring first quarter saw play ebb and flow with each team taking and then losing the lead in turn but Worthing just edged it going into the second

quarter leading 26-25. The hectic scoring slowed slightly mainly due to some poor shooting from the Hawks that saw them miss 5 free throws. James Maclean and Hayden Brock added two good scores but the hosts went into half time five points adrift at 40 – 45. Dazzlers quickly doubled their lead to 10 points at the start of the second half but Hawks fought back with Hutchinson, Maclean & Josh Raby doing a great job of beating the Dazzlers full court press and feeding forwards Putner and Sam Devine. Gradually Hawks narrowed the Dazzlers lead until at the end of the third quarter the match was tied at 63 – 63. Now with the momentum Hawks quickly built a 6 point lead only for

Dazzlers to narrow it to just 2 before the prolific Putner eased the pressure with 2 from 2 from the line. Dazzlers again came back and with 2 minutes remaining had closed Hawks lead to just 3 points. After Coach Nick Probin called two quick time outs to calm his team Kieran Lee finished off a good move and Putner scored 2 more from the line only for Worthing to hit back with 3 points of their own. Despite the late surge from the visitors Hawks held out for a terrific 82 – 78 victory and a lot of credit to both sides for an exceptional game. Hawks Team: Putner (42 points) Lee (11) Hutchinson (8) Maclean (7) Devine (7) Brock (3) Lea Clayton (2) Makin (2) Miller, Raby, Le Rossignol, Holden.

Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter Horsham YMCA manager Peter Buckland was left unusually lost for words on Saturday, after a stoppage time Lancing winner inflicted a cruel 2-1 defeat on his side at Gorings Mead. The visitors sat a single point and one place above YM in the Premier Division standings prior to kickoff, although it was the fifth-placed hosts who dominated large parts of a tight and often cagey affair. Following a goalless first fortyfive minutes, the game suddenly sprang into life after the restart. Luke Donaldson coolly slid YM in front midway through the second

period, only for Lancing midfielder Lewis Finney’s measured lob to restore parity two minutes later. After both sides then squandered good chances to score, the visitors completed their comeback two minutes into added time, as Mike Williamson’s long range effort was fumbled into the net by YM goalkeeper Simon Lockwood. Although the disappointing defeat marks only YM’s second loss of the campaign, Buckland’s side have dropped to sixth spot, and now sit eight points behind league leaders Newhaven. A visibly disappointed YM boss commented: “I don’t know what to say. Sometimes I just think that the footballing Gods decide you are going to get nothing out of a game, and that’s it. I’m never stuck for words, but I am today. I’m just so disappointed. I really am, for the first

time, at a loss. It isn’t the end of the world. We’re still there or there about. It was one that we definitely should have got three points out of, but we haven’t, it’s as simple as that. I can’t be analytical at a time of great disappointment. I’d like to say that we were the better team, but how can I when we’ve just lost 2-1? The players will be gutted, absolutely gutted, as am I. It’s just a case of lifting them now for the next game.” The next game is Tomorrow (Saturday November 14) when YM host Shoreham Town in a league match after the scheduled away fixture at Wick & Barnham on Tuesday evening was cancelled due to floodlight problems. YM Team: Lockwood, D. Sullivan, Gathern, Crane, Evans, Gedling, Dugdale, Hibbert, Donaldson, Wright (Hill 86), Schaaf. Unused subs: Fox, Pollard

Junior Football - Horsham Sparrows

Horsham Sparrows U12 team Only a handful of games across all age groups in the Horsham & District Youth Football League and cup competitions took place last weekend due to the appalling weather conditions. U12 Horsham Sparrows 2 – 2 U12 Kirdford (Sparrows win 3-1 on

penalties) Playing in atrocious conditions, Sparrows had the better of the first half away to Kirdford but went in 0 – 0 at half-time. Kirdford re-grouped in the second half and Sparrows found themselves 2 – 0 down with just five minutes left to play. Ollie

pulled one back for Sparrows and then Arthur equalised with virtually the last kick of the game. Kane saved three of Kirdfords’ spot-kicks whilst Liam, Ollie and Louis netted to send Sparrows through to the next round of the Plate competition. Man of the match went to Ollie.

Tuesday November 10 - Sussex Senior Cup Horsham 3 – 1 Peacehaven & Telscombe Horsham have lost their last two cup matches to lower league sides but turned the tables on Tuesday night by fighting back to knock Ryman South Peacehaven & Telscombe out of the Sussex Senior Cup.

The visitors, managed by former Hornets boss Simon Colbran, led at half time but a terrific second half performance from Horsham saw them run out worthy winners. Although Peacehaven are in a poor run of form - having failed to win in their last eight matches – Horsham comfortably held their own and looked the better side against the kind of opposition they hope they will be toe to toe with next season. Horsham got off to a good start looking the most likely to score but after 15 minutes the visitors took the lead in their first attack. Jack Rowhurst was given far too much time by the Hornets defence and his first

time effort flew past Gareth Williams into the net. The goal did not knock Horsham out of their stride and twice visiting ‘keeper Alieu Secko was called upon to keep his side in front by saving well from both Darren Boswell and Mark Knee. Despite having more of the ball and efforts on goal the referee’s whistle brought the first half to an end with Horsham still trailing from Rowhurst’s early goal. It could and should have got a lot worse for the Hornets when immediately after the restart Josh Marshall, with only Williams in front of him, hit a quick shot straight at the Horsham keeper instead of taking time

Kieron Pamment clips the ball over the Peacehaven keeper for number 2 and a few more strides that would surely have resulted in doubling his sides lead. Horsham kept playing their football and were rewarded in the 52nd minute when after a fine move Kieron Pamment’s excellent ball into the box was met by Evan Archibald who gave Secko no chance from close range. Peacehaven could have regained the lead soon after but ex Hornet Jamie Brotherton’s fierce effort from distance was tipped over by Williams. Then on 75 minutes Horsham deservedly took the lead with a superb goal from Pamment who chipped the keeper to score in off the post. The match, and fine victory, was sealed with 7 minutes left

on the clock through Terry Dodd’s header that Secko failed to keep out despite getting his hands to the ball. Horsham will now turn their attention to league matters when the biggest game of the season so far away to league leaders Newhaven – takes place tomorrow (Saturday November 14). Newhaven are one place and two points above second placed Horsham and after Tuesday evenings encouraging performance Di Paola’s team will be looking to take over top spot. Horsham Team: Williams, Hunt, Storrie, Lewis, Jones, Knee, Shelley, Archibald, Dodd, Pamment, Boswell. Subs. Duncan, Jarman, Waller.

Heath breeze past Ringmer Horsham grind out win in Worthing mud

Worthing sit a place and a point behind Heath Heath return to league action tomorrow (Saturday November 14) when Worthing United visit the Leisure Centre. Worthing sit a place and a point behind Heath in the league so manager Steve Painter will be looking for all three points from the match and to climb a few slots in the table. Heath Team: M. Chester, Ozga, Robinson, Attwater, Howard, Waddingham, Moore, S. Chester, Martin, Andrade, Weller, McDermott. Subs: Wragg, Holmes, Purkis.

Having been knocked out of two cup competitions in their previous two away games Horsham made no mistake in picking up all three league points at Worthing last weekend. The victory also lifted the Hornets up to second place in the table following Eastbourne Town’s shock home defeat to Wick & Barnham. The windy and wet weather and sodden pitch did not present ideal conditions for a footballing treat however and Horsham had to slog it out in a scrappy encounter to ensure the season’s goal of an immediate return to Ryman League was kept on track. The opening first 15 minutes were pretty unforgettable as both teams struggled to adapt to the pitch, and remain on their feet, but on 17 minutes the first piece of meaningful play resulted in the opening goal. A fine performance against SCFL Division 1 side Ringmer saw the Bears into the next round of the Sussex Senior Cup in emphatic style with two goals in each half being enough to see off the visitors. However it could have been made awkward for Heath had Ringmer’s Dominic Clarke taken the simple chance presented to him after 2 minutes. Heath striker Tiago Andrade opened the scoring for the home side after 17 minutes with a powerful header that gave ‘keeper Tom Betts no chance. The Premier league side never looked back although it took a very late first half goal for Heath to gain a two goal cushion. Scott Weller netting his teams second deep into stoppage time to send his team in with a more comfortable two goal advantage at the break. The game was effectively over

when after 55 minutes an own goal extended Heath’s lead although at 3-0 Heath ‘keeper Chester had to twice be alert to stop the visitors pulling a goal back. In the end another very late goal scored by substitute Kieron Purkis – this time a minute into second half stoppage time – sealed a resounding 4-0 win and a place in the next round.
