The Elephantastic auction raises thousands for charity martin read News Reporter
Horsham District hoards greatly enjoyed the stellar Elephantastic charity auction in St John’s Church Hall last Saturday, organised by the town’s Rotary Club in conjunction with the Born Free Foundation and Billingshursts’s PMW Communications. 187 model elephants – large and small – were on show, featuring extraordinarily inventive designs. Star War’s Brian Blessed, hot-foot from signing copies of his autobiography Absolute Pandemonium made an impassioned speech saying: “This area is very dear to me – and so are elephants, I’ve done a lot of work with them in Sri Lanka” before welcoming Born Free’s Virginia McKenna with: “she makes God smile!” The auction got off to a cracking start, Bellman’s MD Jonathan Pratt of TV’s Bargain Hunt expertly cajolView at
ing £2500 for Born Free for a woolly mammoth named Ann-Cestor. Rotarian John le Rossignol roundly praised the beautifully decorated elephants as lively bids ensued, each successive creation seemingly outdoing its predecessor. One glowed in the dark while another (Tiger Lellie) was disguised as a tiger. Horsham’s Vicky Tregarthen was delighten to snap up Rosie Periwinkle, traditionally painted by Anna Caunter. Vicky said: “This is my first auction so I was delighted to buy Rosie for a friend who fell in love with Rosie when seeing her on display in a Horsham shop window!” The elephants had been adopted by local businesses and decorated by the district’s incredibly talented artists, including college students and Amanda Holden with help from her daughters. Some had been signed by local celebrities Peter Andre, Sally Gunnell, Julie Walters and Tim Wonnacott. Brian Blessed and Virginia McKenna also appended their autographs... continued on page 2

I’ve always had a particular affection for elephants, many of them have a nightmare life of persecution and the Foundation is busy fund raising to open a sanctuary in Europe. That’s my dream; they need the companionship of other elephants. This has been a truly wonderful event – I’ve seen many elephants but none so colourful!” Virginia appears in a star studded new film Golden Years, released in March. Ex- gym coach jailed Councillors decide to adopt Local Plan over sex offences Horsham district councillors have voted to adopt the Local Plan (the Horsham District Planning Framework) and it will come into effect officially today (Nov 27). Cllr. Claire Vickers, Cabinet Member for Planning and Development said: “Years of work have gone into this Plan and I am delighted that at long last it has now been adopted by the council. "I do realise that there are aspects of this Plan that some people do not like, but we are obliged to have a Plan that conforms to the Government’s rules and has been approved by a Government Inspector.
“The huge benefit is that it now gives us certainty as regards shaping the future of our district in terms of new homes, jobs and infrastructure, within a sound strategic framework. Above all, it gives us the assurance that we can now resist unwanted planning applications from developers right across the district. “The adoption is a crucial step in the process of ensuring that we have got the right services and facilities for our communities for the long-term future of the district.” The Local Plan is a strategic visioning document which sets the
rules for how the district will develop over time. It is a crucial plan covering the Horsham district and, along with the neighbourhood plans which are being produced by many parish councils, sets out the amount, type and location of all major developments – including housing, employment and infrastructure between now and 2031. The Government’s National Planning Policy Framework states that every local planning authority in England should have a clear, up to date Plan and all future planning decisions will now be taken in accordance with this Local Plan .
Theo is shining light again this Christmas
T A gymnastics coach has been jailed for six years over sexual offences against young girls in the Horsham area. Martin O'Hara, 50, of Medmerry Hill, Brighton, now unemployed, was sentenced at Brighton Crown Court for sexually assaulting two teenage girls in West Sussex, while working as a freelance gymnastics coach between 1993 and 2001. He had been convicted at the same court on October 23 after a ten-day trial, of eight indecent assaults, to which he had pleaded not guilty. Six were offences of indecent assault on a girl then aged between 14 or 15 in Horsham between 1993 and 1995. Two were of indecent assault on another girl then aged 12 or 13 at Southwater, Horsham, between 1995 and 1997. Three of the six offences against the first girl were committed in a gym club, and the other five offences were committed elsewhere in the Horsham area. The jury was unable to agree on a verdict for a separate charge of sexual activity with another girl then aged between 13 and 15 in the Horsham area between 2008 and 2011 and O'Hara was found not guilty of that charge. The charges, authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service, followed an investigation by West Sussex child protection detectives. Detective Constable Nathalie Bundy of the West Sussex Safeguarding Investigations Unit said; "The victims gave evidence in court and we admire both their readiness to do so and the way in which they so clearly described what had happened to them. "Anyone who has information or concerns about sexual offending,
whether against them or against others, can contact police at any time via 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or by calling 101 and arranging to speak to specially trained detectives in confidence."

Students learn forensics Oliver named as top apprentice A trainee gas engineer from Horsham has won his company's Apprentice of the Year award. Oliver Crutchfield, 24, who works at SGN’s Sussex depot in Blatchford Road, Horsham, was chosen out of almost 200 of his peers to win SGN’s top Apprentice of the Year accolade. He also carried off a second award for Best Depot Apprentice in SGN’s Southern region. He joined the company in August 2012 and is just about to qualify as a gas engineer. Once qualified, he will work as an emergency engineer at SGN’s Sussex depot. Oliver said: “Doing my training with SGN has allowed me to continue my studies and get more qualifications, while at the same
More than 1000 Sussex students flocked to the Amex Stadium to hear about police forensics. Experts were almost overwhelmed by the reaction to their offer to brief teenage students in Sussex about their work. Students were given a free personal insight into a possible career in police forensics during a special open day. The Surrey and Sussex Forensics team talked to students about the realities of working in police forensics, explained the different career options on offer and the qualifica-
tions needed. Brian Gilbert of the Forensics team said; "The level of interest was a real eye-opener. Students left the event with a clearer idea of what's involved in a career in police forensics and what personal qualities, skills and qualifications are required. "We carry out a range of work, from scenes of crime examination, to fingerprint examination, and photography. This is a very specialised and professional support to the police and I'm sure the students who came along found food for thought."
time gaining really valuable on-site experience. It’s also given me the chance to experience lots of different aspects of the company’s business, from responding to emergency call-outs to replacing gas mains and installing new meters.” Oliver’s mentor, Emergency Team Manager, Christian Bassett, said: “Ollie has shown a remarkably positive attitude over the past 12 months while doing his training as an emergency engineer, and going forward he will be a real asset the Sussex team. I look forward to managing and coaching him on a daily basis as a fully qualified engineer.”
Reduced sugar in West Sussex schools School meals in West Sussex are getting healthier with sugar amounts significantly cut over the past 12 months. A child who eats a primary school meal every day during the academic year now consumes half a kilo less sugar when compared to the autumn 2014 menu. The reduction has been helped by changes to recipes, as well as new desserts containing 30 per cent less sugar than last year. Christine Field, County Council Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said: “We’re very proud to have been commended by Public Health
England for our work on sugar reduction. We know consuming too much sugar can lead to weight gain and related health and dental problems. In West Sussex more than two-thirds of adults and one-in-three children aged 10-11 are above a healthy weight. That is why we must continue this excellent progress.” Around 30,000 children eat school meals in primary schools every day across West Sussex. Work is continuing on projects to promote drinking tap water as an alternative to sugary drinks and the availability of drinking water in

Student’s art selected for RBA exhibition Time to enjoy older age
Grayson House 21 Hurst Road, Horsham, RH12 2DS We offer Supported Housing in a safe environment for older people who no longer want the responsibility and worry of maintaining their own home
Farlington student Eleanor Bell has been selected to exhibit at the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) annual exhibition in London next year. Eleanor, 18, from Wisborough Green, completed her Art and Design A Level in the summer. She will have the title ‘RBA Scholar’ next to her work, ‘Seated Angel’, at the show and will be invited to attend a private viewing at the Mall
Galleries in March, in advance of the main exhibition which will run from March to April 2. The work will also be exhibited at The Lloyds Register Gallery in London from February 11 to March 11. Art teacher Ros Sprey, who taught Eleanor in the Sixth Form, said: “Eleanor is an exceptionally talented student with incredible focus and creative awareness. It has been a joy to teach her and see her develop
to such a high standard, and we are thrilled that this is being recognised with such a prestigious award.” Headmistress Louise Higson said: “We are very proud of Eleanor; she is a credit to the school. I must also praise the work of our art teachers, Mr Gibbs and Mrs Sprey, who supported her during her A Level.” Farlington is the only Sussex school to have artwork exhibited in the show.

Ben wins top foster carer award Pay-back for fraudsters A young foster carer from Horsham has received a national award in London. Ben Taylor, 15, was presented with the Outstanding Contribution by Sons and Daughters Award following many years of foster caring. Ben shares his Horsham home with a number of fostered children who have social, physical or developmental needs. He was nominated for the award by a social worker who runs training for foster families. Peter Evans, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children – Start of Life, said: “We would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Ben - his selfless actions are both outstanding and inspiring. His care is quite rightly being recognised on a national level.” The award celebrates Ben’s extraordinary contribution to his fostering family during the last 12 months, which has included contributing to training for potential foster families, talking to groups of children about his experiences and playing an active part in a support group for other children who help foster. Kevin Williams, chief executive of The Fostering Network, said: “Being part of a fostering family isn’t always easy, but Ben has shown enormous compassion in opening his heart and his home to children with a range of challenges. “It’s all too easy to talk about the negative statistics that are often associated with children in care – but if
you show the patience, and give the effort, that Ben has then we can all work together to make the negativity a thing of the past.” The awards are an annual celebration of fostering and were hosted by television star Holly Willoughby,
with HRH The Duchess of Cambridge in attendance. To find out more about fostering in West Sussex visit https://www. westsussex.gov.uk/education-children-and-families/adoption-andfostering/.
A Pulborough pensioner who lost nearly £68,000 to fraudsters will get his money back following an investigation by the Sussex Police Economic Crime Unit. Officers have been successful in securing Confiscation Orders at Lewes Crown Court against an organised crime group of fraudsters and money launderers for more than £250,000. Those confiscated funds were also ordered to be paid in compensation to their victims. The 92 year-old man from Pulborough was one of 16 victims to be compensated. He said: "I would like to thank all of the police who have been involved in this case, who have acted with dogged determination throughout, which has now paid off so successfully. I would like to say a huge thank you as not only have you kept us informed throughout, you have also explained everything in complete, but not complicated, detail. I really am very grateful to you for helping us through this. Fingers crossed now that they all pay up!" The series of frauds which netted £256,000 took place in 2011. The criminals posed as neighbours, couriers and workmen, targeting more than 25 elderly and vulnerable people in Sussex, Surrey, and South and East London with a cold calling scam telling the victims that drains at their homes needed repairing as they were affecting neighbours' properties. Police were on the trail of the of-
fenders from the start and made arrests in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The trial took place in 2014. Detective Constable Fleur Jones said: 'This has been a long and complex investigation, but it is good that POCA has now been used to make criminals pay back what they took, and help redress the damage that these heartless individuals have done to these victims and families lives."
Officers have been successful in securing Confiscation Orders at Lewes Crown Court against an organised crime group of fraudsters and money launderers Remember: • Please don't give or transfer money to people you don't know, no matter how convincing or genuine they seem, • Never give your PIN number and cash card to ANYONE. • Don't believe anyone who cold calls when they tell you your drains are blocked or your roof needs repairing. • Don't be afraid to say 'No', shut the door, put down the phone and check with someone you trust.

A taste of driving for youngsters Big screen win for Fred
Girls from Year 9 at Farlington School got behind the wheel for a Young Driver taster session arranged by Station Garage at Broadbridge Heath. Each girl was given a 20 minute lesson by the instructors from the Young Driver, which specialises in offering driving opportunities for 11-17-year-olds. The girls drove the brand-new Skoda, dual controlled Citigo cars in a designated area set up for them to learn and practise a variety of driving manoeuvres. Instructors Rosina Denton and Tim Bentley from Young Driver said: “We hope the girls take away some
valuable tips from today: respect for the vehicle, the importance of choosing the correct speed, the need to concentrate and awareness of other vehicles.” Ella Bubb, Year 9, said, “The instructors were all very friendly and my favourite part was learning how to reverse the car into a parking space. I had lots of fun and I will definitely be more confident when driving in the future.” Suzanna Mitchell, from Station Garage, said, “We were delighted to organise this event as driving is such a key life skill. Giving 13-14 year olds the opportunity to try driving takes
away future anxiety and embeds some of the key safety messages at an early age." Farlington Headmistress Louise Higson said: “The girls were very excited about their driving lessons and gained a great deal from the skilled instruction. At Farlington we educate for confidence, not just in the academic sphere, but for broader life skills. Events such as this help build this confidence beyond the classroom. A big thank-you must go to Station Garage for facilitating this event.”
Appeal to help vulnerable children Family support charity Home-Start has launched its Snowflake appeal across the district. Last year it supported 355 vulnerable children across Crawley, Horsham & Mid-Sussex. But thee were more local children experiencing hardship or tragedy and in need of the charity’s help who they had to turn away because of lack of funds. They are asking local people to help
make sure they can support every child who needs their help in the future and have launched their Snowflake Appeal as a way for the community to get involved. Liz Roe, Scheme Manager at HomeStart CHAMS said:: “When a child is living in poor or unsuitable housing because of the family’s money problems, or when they don’t get the chance to go out and play because of their mum’s postnatal depression, we
want to be there for them. “We want to be able to reach every child who needs us, as early as we can, so that they can have the best possible start in life. Which is why we are asking people to support our Snowflake Appeal.” Find out more at www. homestartchams.org.uk/ snowflake
A season-long prize draw at Pulborough Bowls Club saw sports and social club manager Fred Bushby pick up the top prize. Members and non-members were encouraged to buy numbers in the draw which was supported by main sponsor Hamilton and Cole of Pulborough, Harwoods of Pulborough and the Chequers Hotel opposite St
Mary's church. Fred's prize was a 40" flat screen TV donated by Hamilton and Cole. More than £200 was raised towards updating the viewing areas for players and members of the public to sit in comfort and watch the matches. It is hoped that work on the project will be completed in time for the start of the new season in April.

The case followed an intelligenceled investigation by the Paedophile On-Line Investigation Team (POLIT) of Sussex Police. None of the images are believed to be of local children and there was no evidence of contact offending, whether directly or on-line. Detective Constable Helen Curtis of POLIT said; "Iebba used Skydrive, a 'cloud storage' medium, and Skype, a medium for video and audio calls from a computer, to help carry out his offences. This type of offending is committed using many different media, but this case again demonstrates that we are able to adapt our investigations in order to continue to bring these child sex offenders to justice."
Hit the ground running for hospice St Catherine's Hospice is looking for runners to join its team and take part in next year's Brighton Marathon on April 17. Each year, St Catherine's cares for more than 2,000 people at their hospice sites or patients’ own homes. All the care the hospice provides is free but with less than one third of its running costs being provided by the NHS the fundraising efforts of people such as those running marathons is

A national charity is launching a new tea party group for older people in Horsham. UK charity Contact the Elderly is launching the group for people aged 75 and over to provide a regular and vital friendship link every month. To help support the newly founded group, the charity is urgently appealing for volunteers in the local community to help by sparing just a few hours each month to help with the running of local tea parties – and enjoy a cuppa and cake themselves. The charity aims to relieve the loneliness of isolated older people who live alone, by organising monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local communities. Each older guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver, and is taken to a volunteer host’s home where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship. To help kick-start the new group in Horsham, Contact the Elderly is looking for volunteer hosts to welcome the group into their homes for
tea once or twice a year. Contact the Elderly’s Regional Development Officer Julia Rivas said: “It’s not a big commitment, and our volunteers genuinely get as much out of the experience as our older guests so I’d encourage any-
one interested in giving something back to their community to please get in touch with us as soon as possible.” Those interested should call Julia on 01273 401569 or email Julia. rivas@contact-the-elderly.org.uk
Choosing care checklist
The checklist is also available to download on www.westsussexconnecttosupport.org/choosingcare, from Age UK branches and Carers Support West Sussex. Peter Catchpole, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “Making a choice about care is one of the biggest decisions people have to make. It can be a lot of information to take in all in one go so we hope these checklists prove a valuable source of information with prompts about questions to ask.”
A handy house-shaped checklist about choosing care is now available across the district. The checklist, has information to help people if they are choosing a care home or care in their own home. It has a list of prompts and questions such as ‘Check the current Care Quality Commission report for the service’ ‘Can a care plan be agreed
and changed easily to suit your needs and preferences?’ and ‘What are the costs?’ The checklist, which was trialled in the Crawley area over the summer, can be downloaded at www. westsussex.gov.uk/choosingcare or is available from libraries, GP surgeries, pharmacies, Citizens Advice and social workers.

Mum Sarah backing a Top award for giving a good time out change for the better Horsham company Woods For Learning has scooped the top accolade in the 3rd Annual KalliKids UK Best Awards. It beat off competition from more than 1,200 providers to be named Overall Provider in the Best Time Out or Holiday Club category. Gary Marlow, of Woods for Learning said: “To win KalliKids Best Holiday Club in the UK was an extreme honour for us, especially as we have only been going a short while, but then to find out we won Overall Best Provider in the UK was unbelievable. “There were some great finalists and we would like to congratulate all the other providers as I know what lengths they go to in order to ensure children and families get the very best.
Horsham mum Sarah Buck is backing a campaign for fully accessible toilets for the disabled to be installed in public places. She is a campaigner for Changing Places, which has launched a map showing the location of all Changing Places toilets for the 250,000 people nationwide who need these facilities, including those with profound and multiple learning disabilities. Sarah, whose son Alfie, 9, has cerebral palsey, said: "As the mother of Alfie, who has a disability, I am delighted by the announcement of a Changing Places map. It will make a world of difference when it comes to planning days out, which can be stressful when you have to consider the needs of a loved one with a disability. "As Alfie gets older the map will become more important, not just to me
but to his future carers, schools and colleges. Without Changing Places, Alfie would have to be changed on a filthy toilet floor, so it is reassuring to know the exact location of our nearest facility when we need it." The UK is a world leader in provision of specialised toilets designed for people whose toilet needs are not met by standard accessible toilets, with more than 770 available across the UK. The web based map will feature all of these facilities, making the lives of people with a disability and their families and carers much simpler. Changing Places toilets are larger than a standard disabled toilet and include a height-adjustable bench, a hoist and room for a wheelchair and up to two carers. You can find the new Changing Places map at: www.changingplacesmap.org.uk

Strictly flamenco at Collyer's College Prize-winning display
from former pupil Lucy
Collyer's students were kept on their toes with flamenco dance lessons. Professional dancer Ana Dueñas led some lively Flamenco Workshops at Collyer’s, as part of the college’s annual Rag Day. Margarita Mortimer, Subject Leader for Spanish at Collyer’s, said: “Ana’s an incredibly talented and charismatic dancer, who is always so generous with her time. Her sessions have really helped to give the students a vital insight into Spanish culture, which is something that has been the key to the success of the course. The students loved working with Ana and thoroughly enjoyed the workshops. I was incredibly impressed that they were able to dance quite a challenging choreography by the end of the sessions!”

Swim membership is a great low cost way to stay healthy.
Former pupil Lucy Parsons returned to Farlington School to present certificates and prizes at the annual GCSE and A Level Certificate Presentation and PrizeGiving Evening. Lucy delighted the invited guests with her witty, well-observed and very timely speech. She said ‘I was initially honoured. What a wonderful opportunity to pass on some ‘words of wisdom’. This honour was swiftly replaced with the crippling thought ‘well, why the heck are they asking me?!’ Neither Lucy nor the audience need have worried as she spoke
both eloquently and with passion about her career at school and beyond. Lucy left Farlington in 2006 and went on to study Sociology at University. After graduation she was unsure which career to pursue, but knew one thing for certain - she wanted her own business. After a couple of different marketing and events roles, sourced through social media and contacts and providing invaluable experience, Lucy decided to take the plunge and go solo. She now runs her own up-and-coming Creative Marketing Co. and works with brands including Rolls-Royce plc.

Capturing the future Technology and gardening hand in hand Photo by Toby Phillips

A time capsule has been sealed at Christ’s Hospital School and will not be opened until 2065. There was an air of excitement at the school as Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Alan Yarrow and the Lady Mayoress, Gilly Yarrow performed the ceremony. Pupils, who have enjoyed collecting items for the metal cylindrical capsule, have catalogued a list of the contents. Items have been selected at 50 year intervals from 2015, 1965, 1915, 1865 and 1815 for this miniature archive. There has been a focus on heroic Old Blues (former pupils). There is a letter from John Septimus Roe describing the challenges he faced on the High Seas in 1815, items reflecting Edmund Blunden's war service in 1915 and present day news articles and items concerning Joshua Leakey's VC and Joe Launchbury's participation in the Rugby World Cup.
There are official documents and more informal perspectives from current pupils. The ‘Housey’ Tudor coat and the familiar yellow socks are also included along with other items of the School’s distinctive uniform. As the boys’ uniform has hardly changed since the School’s foundation in 1552, so it is quite likely that the pupils will still be wearing it in 2065. Headmaster John Franklin said: “We were delighted to able to share this important moment with the Lord and Lady Mayoress. The capsule will be opened 50 years on and includes current and historical items we hope not only to give a flavour of CH life in 2015 but also some idea of the continuity and change that has occurred over the past centuries and contributed to the School's evolution.” The Time Capsule has been buried adjacent to the school’s new Language and Resource Centre.
Technology is coming to the garden! O, rest ye, brother gardeners, we will not wander more! According to a recent psychological study mixed with future tech trends, as a job, gardening will be taken over by artificial intelligence within the next ten to fifteen years. The BBC has followed this train of thought and if you so wish, you too can see what the chances are of you being in employment by 2030. Go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-34066941 for more info. One has to admit, my instant reaction to the news was one of derision. How can an unthinking machine do what I do? But then I looked at the what the majority of 'jobbing gardeners' do and realised the writing is most certainly on the wall. Of course, gardening today isn't really the romantic ideal of old. The days of a junior working on a small estate to become a journeyman or foreman, then studying to become a head gardener have long gone. Those skills are no longer desirable - being expensive to maintain. Judging by the age of people one sees at the garden centres, combined with the quality of talent leaving the horticultural colleges, I don't think the world will stop when gardens are not
tended by people. I am sure there are some reading this article who will be seething at my stance. They will be saying, gardening is a highly skilled profession. Indeed it is, in the purist form. To know botany, biology, meteorology, climatology, psychology, history, have a smattering of Latin all mixed with visual creativity is indeed a rare commodity. But, be truthful to yourself, how many of those who strim and mow today's gardens, understand any of those t h i n g s ? How many builders, handymen, landscapers and 'men with mowers' are there in the modern world of the garden? I am after-all speaking from a position of vulnerability being a professional gardener myself, but to own a garden is an expensive liability. £30 a week to mow and tend a garden adds up over the 6 months a year you employ the gardener. Multiply that by a number of years and that's a fair few holidays spent looking at your striped patch of grass. The truth be told, I am already rec-

ommending that my clients buy robot lawnmowers. Admittedly, much of what you see currently on the high street is pretty poor. Battery life is not long enough and there are complications with demarking lawn from borders, but the technology has come on in leaps and bounds in past few years. In 2010 the first autobot mower that was guided by satellite was successfully trialled and is now in the early stages of production. A client of mine who is a tech specialist is adamant the prices for the 'good' stuff will c o m e down as the boundaries of our understanding in artificial intelligence expand further. Thus, I am now happy to work alongside a robot who mows whilst I prune. At some point, in the next ten years, I have no doubt much of my pruning with be done by 'bot' and I am keen to involve myself in the process. If there are any tech companies who want to collaborate, give me a call. If it saves me a job and the client money what's wrong with that?

Lucky Horsham has Paula’s Polish treats!
Business News Martin Read – Business Reporter Horsham now has a traditional Eastern European grocery – and it’s very special! Paula’s Bishopric shop is packed to the rafters with a glittering array of truly enticing Polish food and refreshments. And, very conveniently it’s open 7 days a week; from 7.30 to 10pm (10 – 8 on Sundays). Paula arrived in the UK eight years ago; what compelled her to open a Polish grocers? “I just love the variety and flavour of the food! It’s the taste of
home and is treasured by those from my part of the world living around Horsham. And I’m very keen to give local people the opportunity to try it, too – it’s proving very popular!” Paula’s partner Zak adds: “Horsham is an historic market town and customers say they really love the unique service and products that we provide – so it’s great to be here!” What delights are on offer? 30 different types of sausages, a huge variety of delicious cooked meats, dairy products and smoked cheese to die for. Also there are speciality treats like Pierogi (dumplings) and
Katarzynki (gingerbread fondants) and an exceptionally wide range of teas. Knowing what you are buying is not a problem because Paula and Zak go out of their way to explain and demonstrate their products, always encouraging customers: “Try some – then you’ll know it’s fresh – that’s why we had a free barbecue in the summer!” And fresh it certainly is: rolls and cakes are made in house daily. Many other items are delivered direct from Poland several times a week while artisan breads and authentic Polish patisseries are produced in Sussex.
Every staple food is available in addition to a wide range of biscuits and sweets. There are particularly intriguing items, such as jars of pickled fish and caviar, sauerkraut and gherkins by the score and a village section full of Eastern European pickles, marinated pear, creamy lard delicacies, sauces and – at 39p - numerous herbs. Health products such as Kefir abound and, despite the high quality, prices are remarkably reasonable - and there is currently a 10% discount for those spending more than £10. Many types of juices are on offer, fresh fruit arrives twice a week and
even dog food is stocked. Romanian goulash and Czech items have been added to the repertoire and Zak says: “For Christmas we’ll be selling typical Polish festive fare, such as fresh trout and carp. We’re applying for a licence to sell famous Polish beers and vodka, too. We’re delighted to have a lot of repeat customers giving us excellent feedback. And of course we also love welcoming new people - of all nationalities!” Horsham is very fortunate to have the delicacies at Paula’s. But, be warned – visits are addictive!

With spring, comes new life and a new set of interior trends. Gill Burn, owner of Sussex based company, Lady Decorators, gives her predictions on spring 2016 interior trends, which include vivid brights and classic whites. Keep it white: The use of white, brings many benefits to a room, including the illusion of space and a sense of relaxation. This spring, utilise white to also create a fresh blank canvas, which will allow you to experiment with accents of colour in your furniture or soft furnishings. Adding colour this spring: Deep and decadent hues, such as mustard and magenta, add drama and punchiness to your walls, creating a contemporary feel. In contrast, using fresh, pretty pastels with white, gives a vintage and sophisticated feel. Both these colour themes are set to be very prominent trends in spring 2016. Be brave with colour and paint: Feature walls are very much making a comeback and will be even bigger this spring. By adding bold and vivid pops of colour, a touch of individuality can be created. Bold yellow, for example - which is set to be huge this spring - instantly brightens up a room and shows a playful, fun personality. Nature inspired wallpaper such as birds, butterflies or foliage, is great for bringing the outdoors in, while

Rudgwick regeneration project provides for the whole of West Sussex Just over two years old, the regenerated Rudgwick Brickworks site is brining jobs to the north of the county and brewery-fresh lager to the South Coast. The regeneration project, led by Harrison Rural Partners, is now nearing completion and has transformed a derelict site, into a thriving hub for local businesses. The project also provides valuable employment to the area; first tenants, Firebird Brewing, have already begun to expand their team and the site continues to create local jobs.
The regeneration project... is now nearing completion and has transformed a derelict site, into a thriving hub With staff additions, comes greater reach, and Firebird’s arrival in Brighton, has been cemented by the introduction of brewery-fresh Bohemia Pilsner, to the Temple and the Seven Stars - both of which have recently reopened. Renovated by local pub group Indigo, the pubs boast a dazzling array of craft beer, both from local and more established brewers. "It’s a big deal for a micro-brewery, like us, to be invited to provide our lager in bars like the Temple and Seven Stars," said Firebird cofounder, Richard Peters "and we’re
delighted that Indigo are showing their support for local brewers: It’s very much in keeping with our focus on our own local community." Brewery-fresh beer is becoming more and more popular in Brighton, with several breweries providing beer, via this method, to a range of pubs. The beer, which is pumped into pressurised vessels in the pub, comes directly from the brewery vessels. Firebird’s co founder, Bill King, a fifth-generation brewer of rich local heritage, explains: "Brewery Fresh Beer is unpastuerised and unfiltered and it is actually still lagering in the pub. The beer is as fresh as physically possible, as though it had just been poured in the brewery." Whilst the impact of the Rudgwick Brickworks regeneration continues to be felt across the county and beyond, Bill and Richard stressed the importance of the Brickworks, and its new businesses, as community assets. Bookham and Harrison (makers of the famous Sussex Charmer cheese) have already opened a café and deli on the site, and the Firebird directors hope that their brewery shop, indoor beer garden and regular brewery tours, will help to ensure engagement with the local community and visitors from across Surrey and Sussex. And now the Brickworks is coming alive for Christmas with Firebird’s Winter Brewfest. Mr Peters explained: "We’ve got a great party planned; We have a huge selection of our beers on, local ciders and gins, music, dancing and loads more. It really should be a great community day!"

The District Post reviews 4DX Cinema Box Office 01403 750220 www.thecapitolhorsham.com THEATRE
CINEMA
CAFE
STEVE AND LEE – BOTH SIDES NOW Sunday 29 November 7.30pm
MAy pearson Contributing Writer
Designed to draw audiences into a film, like never before, 4DX cinemas have been in the UK since January. Cineworld opened it's newest in Crawley, last week, and invited The District Post to a presentation screening. I felt a little anxious, as my husband and I arrived on the first floor of Cineworld, in Crawley. Canapés and Prosecco were generously served to the guests, who mingled a while before being led to the ground floor, where the 'all new cinema experience' awaited. My first thought, as I entered the auditorium, was that the cinema still looked pretty much as one would expect. Then I noticed that the seats resembled those of a theme park ride and my inner child began to dance. As I settled into my seat, my eyes were immediately drawn to a glowing button on my right. This was a toggle switch, which gave me a choice between 'Water on' and 'Water off'. I assumed that it referred to the spray element of the experience and I selected off, on this occasion. As far as cinema seats go, the 4DX chairs are comfortable, a decent size and fully upholstered, with the exception of the cupholder, footrest and, of course, the little button panel. The idea of introducing special effects, to accompany a film, is not new, so I wondered what to expect from the evening. Although my dancing inner child was imagining all sorts of thrilling possibilities, I couldn't help but conjure in my mind, an image of a 1950s movie theatre, in which, discretely placed fans and nozzles blew talcum powder and water spray over a motionless audience. After a short introductory speech, the film was run... and what a ride my inner child was taken on! To quote Cineworld's own words, 4DX 'stimulates all five senses through high-tech motion seats and special effects such as wind, fog, lightening, bubbles, water, rain and scents'. Barring bubbles, our screening had them all! During action scenes, air jets hissed from my headrest and from somewhere in front. Elsewhere, lights flashed and scents were released and, at one
point, fog emerged from the bottom corners of the screen. I was occasionally sprayed with the slightest mist from far away. This stirred curiosity: Just how much water would have landed on me, had I opted for 'Water on'? With the film being 3D, would wet 3D glasses have become a bit of an annoyance, or added to the fun?...
Before I realised just how sophisticated the seats were, I believed, for a moment, that an unruly audience member was kicking me in the back! Before I realised just how sophisticated the seats were, I believed, for a moment, that an unruly audience member was kicking me in the back! The seats' versatility is impressive. Through a combination of 3 basic movements: Heave (Vertical movement of the seats), Roll (Sideways tilting of the seats) and Pitch (Forward and backward rocking of the seats), they can be programmed to 'mimic the action on the screen'. In case you're wondering who, if anyone, works the special effects: A company in South Korea (where
4DX originates) painstakingly runs through each new film, frame by frame, and programs in every scent, spray, vibration, jolt and flash. All that programming is put to use in the cinema's 'plant room', which houses the effects. It's important to note that 4DX comes with certain warnings and restrictions. For instance, it is not suitable for pregnant women or people who suffer from high blood pressure, heart conditions, back or neck conditions. There are height and weight restrictions, and the experience is unsuitable for children under the age of 4. The list in full, is available via the Cineworld website. Crawley is the third cinema in the UK to receive the 4DX treatment. With a host of celebrity guests, such as Ella Eyre, Jameela Jamil and Russell Kane, the launch of the first 4DX cinema, in Milton Keynes, attracted the nation's media. Cineworld then launched a second in Sheffield, before heading south, to West Sussex. Home cinema installations are fairly commonplace, making it possible to recreate a decent 'traditional' cinema experience, in one's own home. Even the added 3rd dimension has been available for some years. As yet, 'smell-o-vision' and rocking seats don't appear to be in the running for tomorrow's home viewing. There's no telling what the future holds for 4DX cinema either, but I'll hazard a guess that it's here to stay. For further information and 4DX bookings, contact Cineworld Crawley.

Located in East Street, this restaurant has been totally transformed and features artwork paying tribute to Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the major Romantic poets, who was born in Horsham. Each PizzaExpress restaurant is individually designed
– often using well known places, people or historical events from the area as the basis. The interior of the Horsham restaurant has a range of collage artworks inspired by Shelley’s poetry and his story. The artworks combine pieces of text and imagery that give a contemporary interpretation of his work.

Countryside wins landscape design award for St Irvyne’s
Countryside’s St Irvyne’s, which forms part of Wickhurst Green near Horsham in West Sussex has received a Best Landscape Design silver award at the What House? Awards 2015. The glittering awards ceremony was held on 20 November at the Grosvenor House Hotel, in London, hosted by comedian David Walliams. The awards are judged by a panel of property experts, from architects to property writers. Now in their 34th year, the What House? Awards are considered the ‘Oscars’ of the housebuilding industry, rewarding the very best achievements from Britain's housebuilders. The What House? Awards judges commented: “The landscape vi-
sion of Wickhurst Green – which will eventually provide 963 homes, a new primary school, a neighbourhood centre and facilities, and formal and informal open spaces – has three core elements; to retain and enhance the existing vegetation and biodiversity; to use the established flora and fauna water networks to create an immediate mature character; and to provide play and recreational facilities.” The judges added: “At St Irvyne’s, the architecture and landscape combine to create an attractive and pleasantly relaxing atmosphere. With St Irvyne’s, Countryside has successfully recreated the village environment, complete with a sense of tranquillity and calm.”

St Irvyne’s offers a collection of family friendly homes arranged in a picturesque village style development, set within mature landscaping and well served by local amenities. With traditionally inspired architecture, the homes combine colonial and traditional architecture with contemporary styling, while quality and attention to detail are evident throughout. Exuding luxury and opulence, the executive 4 and 5 bedroom detached homes in the Colonial Collection have been expertly designed with timeless style and features that include a grand entrance hall, impressive oak staircases and feature glazing to front and rear elevations. St Irvyne’s offers a tranquil environment with homes positioned along attractive tree-lined avenues, together with extensive planting, ponds and mature oak trees. Speaking about the awards, Graham Cherry, Chief Executive of the New Homes & Communities division at Countryside comments: “We are thrilled to have won the silver award in the Best Landscaped Design award at the What
House? Awards. We understand that creating a strong landscape design for our developments is essential for creating vibrant places which residents can enjoy for many years to come.” St Irvyne’s provides an ideal location for those who are looking to enjoy the countryside lifestyle without losing the connections to London and the continent. By road, the A24 provides direct access into London to the north and Worthing to the south. Gatwick is only 17 miles away and Heathrow just under an hour. There are regular bus routes from Broadbridge Heath into Horsham, where frequent rail services operate from Horsham to London Victoria and London Bridge in around 55 minutes. The 4 and 5 bedroom houses at St Irvyne’s are currently available from £699,950 to £975,000. Parkrun founder Paul meets Jogger Rob in the United States Athletics Dave Smith – Sports Editor
L
ast weekend Horsham Joggers parkrunner’s once again reached far and wide across the globe as Rob Crocker ran in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge at the Chrissy Fields parkrun, San Francisco, finishing sixth in 19.31. He also bumped into Horsham parkrun friend and parkrun creator Paul Sinton Hewitt CBE.
Paul Sinton Hewitt last visited Horsham in September to take part in the town’s first year anniversary parkrun where he signed the parkrun elephant ‘Bolt’; a part of the successful Rotary Elephantastic trail. Closer to home Dean Heneghan had a superb performance finishing 8th in the high quality Sussex cross country fixture at Bexhill and Claire Burrows achieved a personal best by over three minutes in the Wimbledon half marathon.

Jolyon Palmer and Pascal Wehrlein at the Race of Champions Motor Sport Dave Smith – Sports Editor Lotus F1 Team Third and Reserve Driver Jolyon Palmer competed with the biggest names in world motorsport last weekend at the Race of Champions which was staged in London's former Olympic Stadium. In an event which featured champions from the worlds of F1, touring cars, rallycross, IndyCar, and GT racing, Jolyon made it to the QuarterFinals in Friday's Nations Cup team
competition before suffering a narrow defeat in the opening round of Saturday's individual Champion of Champions event. The Southwater driver was paired with current DTM Champion Pascal Wehrlein in the Nations Cup to represent Team Young Stars. In the opening round, the up and coming duo defeated the pairing of Olympic cycling legend-turned racing driver Sir Chris Hoy and Romain Grosjean, the man Jolyon will replace in the Lotus F1 Team's race driver line-up
next season. In the next round they met three-time world touring car champion Andy Priaulx, and British touring car championship legend Jason Plato, who were representing Team England. Priaulx edged out Wehrlein in the opening heat, but Jolyon pulled one back for the young drivers by defeating Plato in the second heat. The two winning drivers were then pitted against each other and despite a valiant effort from Jolyon to close down Priaulx's early advantage; he fell agonisingly short of progressing to the next round. In Saturday's individual Champion of Champions competition, Jolyon was drawn against Blancpain GT Champion Alex Buncombe in the opening round with Jolyon just three-tenths-of-a-second short of victory in both heats. Jolyon said: "I am a bit disappointed not to have gone further. It was very close between me and Andy Priaulx in the Nations Cup. I had the beating of Jason in the first match of the Quarter Finals but Andy beat me and that's two touring car guys who are very experienced. I think the stadium has been really good and it’s a great event to be a part of and I hope to be back!"

Lively Borough see off second placed Bromley Photos by Clare Steere
rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Saturday November 21 – London 3 South East Pulborough 29 - 19 Bromley
Team Manager Roger Hunt described Pulborough’s convincing victory over second in the table Bromley as: “The best I’ve seen the boys play – a proper good win!” Boro again had some principal faces missing but their replacements stepped up exceptionally well. Frazer Oliphant-Hope opened the scoring with a penalty for Borough, only for Bromley to take the lead with an unconverted try – but that proved to be the only time that they were ahead. Frazer successfully converted his own try before a new signing, South African Keith Chenoweth, got over the line, Frazer again obliging with the kick to
Borough's win keeps the promotion push going give Boro a 17-5 advantage at the turn. Then, with wind and slope in their favour Bromley promptly notched up another converted try before George West added a further five
points for Borough. Rewarded pressure from the visitors put them just three points behind Borough until, with two minutes remaining substitute Harvey Strudwick, recently rejoined after university, drove
Pulborough remain fourth through and pushed over, Frazer’s boot closing out the game 29-19. Roger Hunt adding: “We were very controlled throughout with no mistakes. It was an end to end game played in good spirit”.
Pulborough, still fourth, next play on Saturday December 5 with a long trip for a league game against fifth placed Folkestone. The Kent side have equal points but inferior scoring statistics.
Horsham lay siege at fortress Holcombe Horsham stay fourth with gritty draw against Oxford Photo by Nick Evans
Saturday November 21 – South League Premier – Div. 2 Holcombe 0 - 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter
Jack Dean kept up his impressive goal scoring
Horsham consolidated their fourth in the league position with an assured win, inflicting Holcombe’s first defeat at their North Kent stronghold this season. The close-looking scoreline wrongly suggests a tight game whereas Horsham maintained control throughout on a seemingly attractive but deceptively bouncy re-laid pitch, still awaiting bedding down. The match defining event was Jack Dean’s goal – his seventh from eight starts – converting a deadly accurate Matt Hough sup-
ply with an online tap in. Horsham keeper Andy Isaacs excelled with professional saves when called upon without being sufficiently tested to call the result into question. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “With greater tightness in close quarters, and perhaps a bit more of the rub of the green, we might well have scored several more, but we’re pleased to notch up three points at Holcombe. We’ve got second placed Winchester at Broadbridge Heath tomorrow (Saturday November 28) with a 12 noon push back. They’re one of just two sides remaining unbeaten. If we can win that one then we’ll be back in contention.” Last Saturday London Edwardians won again - their seventh win from eight games - and remain top, clear by three points.
Broadbridge Heath’s winning run continues Saturday 21st November 21 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division St Francis Rangers 0 - 3 Broadbridge Heath Football Andrew Crisp – Football Reporter November has been a good month for Heath with four wins from four games and three clean sheets, the latest saw Steve Painters side travel to strugglers St Francis Rangers and come away with a comfortable win against the divisions’ bottom side. The hosts hopes of avoiding relegation wasn’t helped by not having a recognised goalkeeper for the game and so the task to keep out ‘The Bears’ fell to midfield player Mark Barnard and as is often the case in such circumstances he then went on the make a string of saves to keep the score respectable. Heath started brightly with Kieron Purkis making his first start of
the season due to the unavailability of Tiago Andrade and Merv Bhujun. Early Heath pressure saw Tim Martin volley just over the crossbar, Barnard saved twice in quick succession before Heath opened the scoring in the 4th minute when Scott Weller played a short corner to Purkis who took the ball to the goal-line and then picked out Stuart Chester who poked the ball through a crowded penalty area into the goal from 12 yards. Barnard then denied Ollie Moore a goal with a superb save that saw the keeper dive across his goal and acrobatically push the goal bound effort wide of the post but the reprieve was short-lived when Purkis combined well with Weller on the edge of the box to make it 2-0 after 14 minutes. The game then became quite scrappy with too many misplaced passes from both teams and the half ended without further incident. The second period followed a
similar pattern to the first, Martin again went close with a shot just wide of Barnard’s left hand post and then had another shot saved by the keeper. Stuart Chester saw his right foot shot from distance deflected wide of the goal and Heath finally added a third midway through the half when Martin played the ball into the path of Ollie Moore who hammered a right foot shot from 12 yards that flew past Barnard for the midfield player’s 14th goal of the season. The quality of play again became rather scrappy in the closing stages and one or two heavy challenges by the home-side were not appreciated by the Heath contingent but another victory for Steve Painters side which sees them move up one place to 10th in the division. Heath Team: M. Chester, Godfrey, S. Chester, Howard. Flack, Waddingham, Moore, McDermott, Weller (Robinson 55), Purkis (Wragg 65), Martin (Sandell 65).
Charlotte White scored for Horsham Saturday November 21 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Div. 1 Oxford University Ladies 1 - 1 Horsham Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter With a gritty Horsham performance against one of the tightest defences in the league (only bettered by Surbiton and Barnes, the top two teams) Horsham shared the points to maintain their fourth spot in the table. Both teams started with intensity featuring much positive movement and accurate passing. Initial honours were even but Horsham edged in front midway through the first half when England mixed team’s defender CJ White impressed her
team mates with a well executed goal. Determined Horsham kept the university side at bay for most of the second half until sustained Oxford pressure rewarded them with a late equaliser. Horsham fought on in pursuit of the three points but despite their best efforts were unable to clinch victory. Speaking to the District Post Elle Blakesley said: “We gave it our all and were unlucky not to get the winning goal in the closing minutes of the game. Yvonne Grout was our Player of the Match – she saved a goal off the line! We’re back at Broadbridge Heath tomorrow (Saturday 28) for our must win league game, the final one before the Christmas and New Year break.” Then on Saturday December 12 the Ladies travel to Burgess Hill in the Quarter Final of the Sussex Cup.

Pamment’s stunning free kick salvages a point for Hornets Photos by John Lines
Hornets goal scorer, Kieron Pamment was in short supply with the usually prolific Terry Dodd having a rare off day. The best opportunity of the half fell to Dodd when the Hornets striker was put through by Pamment but his usually reliable left boot let him down and his weak effort allowed visiting ‘keeper James Broadbent to simply pick up the ball. At the other end a long shot from Peter Cooper and a deflected effort from Nik Chamberlain failed to work Horsham ‘keeper Williams. The visitors finished the half the stronger of the two teams without really looking a threat and the half time whistle gave both players and supporters the chance of a warming cup of tea. Early second half attempts from both sides – Liam Painter firing over for Eastbourne and Alex Duncan hitting his shot straight at Broadbent – failed to break the deadlock but minutes after Duncan’s chance the visitors finally did find the net. United’s Tom Saunders fell in the box under a challenge but before the claims for a penalty could influence referee
Lee Martin-Cramp’s decision Peter Cooper slammed the loose ball into the net from a few yards out. The goal failed to spur Horsham on and they continued to struggle to find any fluency in their play, luckily it also failed to lift the visitors and they could not find the second goal that would have killed the game off. Dodd continued his off day by volleying wide from Pamment’s cross and Joe Shelley had a header cleared off the line but the Horsham equaliser did come through Dodds good play if not from his boot. With 78 minutes gone Dodd’s run at goal was abruptly brought to an end by Adam Davidson’s crude foul 25 yards out that earned the visiting captain a booking. With Horsham’s dead ball expert Kieron Pamment over the free kick there was always a good chance of a goal and Pamment did not disappoint, curling his kick around the wall and into the top corner. The final ten minutes continued in the same vein as the previous eighty with both sides seemingly content to

tled down to keep the score 1-0 at half-time. A good start to the second half was needed and the girls delivered with lots of pressure, shots and corners. Ella T hit the bar and Alice, Charley and Ellen also went close but the equaliser would not come. Worthing then broke and got a second goal and then followed this up with a third. The girls kept going but were not rewarded and it ended 3-0. Girl of the game was Bella who was strong in defence and brought the ball out well. Women’s Team – Sparrows dominated against hitherto unbeaten Crawley Town on a bumpy pitch in the park, winning 3-0. The home team playing with high tempo and neat football, scored once in the first half through Hannah D and twice in the second through Charlotte and Amber. The defence were very strong restricting the visitors to long range efforts which rarely troubled Hope in goal.

Dave Smith - Sports Editor
Saturday 21st November 21 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Horsham 1 – 1 Eastbourne United AFC League leaders Horsham failed to take advantage of second placed Newhaven’s cup involvement to open up the gap at the top after being held at home by mid table Eastbourne United AFC. On a day that saw the temperatures plummet - made all the more biting by a strong North wind - the usually fluent and free scoring Hornets stuttered and had Kieron Pamment’s superbly hit free kick to thank for salvaging a point. In a pretty uneventful first half chances and goalmouth excitement
Junior Football Dave smith – Sports Editor Eastbourne United Association 4 0 Loxwood Youth Loxwood Youth’s County Cup run ended with defeat by a strong Eastbourne United Association side from division one of the Mid-Sussex League. Despite holding their own in terms of possession, Loxwood fell to two brilliant counterattacking strikes in the first half and two soft goals from a defensive error and a penalty early in the second period which killed the game as a contest. Loxwood pressed the Eastbourne goal throughout the rest of the game but couldn’t break through and all in all it was just one of those disappointing days at the office for the young Magpies, who next week seek to continue their 100 per cent league record when they play Hollington United. Chesworth Rovers U12 6 - 1 Storrington Vipers U12 Top of the league Chesworth Rovers hosted Storrington Vipers looking for a win that would see them remain top. Toby Shepheard bagged a magnificent hat-trick and Regan, Finlay and Fletch scored one each
around a solitary Storrington goal to give Rovers a convincing victory. Some great team football all morning also saw a 2 - 0 win for Chesworth in the warm down match with Nyke and Finlay both netting for the Rovers. Horsham Sparrows FC Under 15 – The team travelled to East Grinstead and on a heavy pitch took the lead with a penalty scored by Luke M. East Grinstead recovered to take a 3-1 lead before Sparrows scored again with a close range effort from George V. After a couple missed opportunities to level the game, East Grinstead struck on the break again to end the Sparrows five match unbeaten run, 4-2. Man of the Match was Jordan M. Under 13 Girls – Sparrows girls faced Crowborough Athletic away last Sunday and turned in a strong performance to win 4-0. Girl of the Match was Jess N who scored one goal with Erin H scoring her second hat-trick of the season. Anna W marshalled a solid defensive effort. Under 14 Girls – After two weeks of postponed matches the under 14 girls travelled to Worthing for a cup game. The girls were a bit rusty at the start and conceded a goal after a couple of minutes but quickly set-
Kieron Pamment's free kick gave Horsham a point
Horsham celebrate the equaliser sit back and create very little; the referee’s final whistle signalling what was a fair point a piece. This was certainly two points dropped against a side that Horsham in their current form should have disposed of comfortably, it might however turn out to be a wakeup call to some who think the league is already wrapped up. Dom Di Paola’s

QUOTE OF THE WEEK It wasn’t a very enjoyable game to watch, to play in or to manage, but we got the points and we’re going home happy Peter Buckland
Football mourns the death of local football legend Mick Browning Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor The District Post is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Horsham YMCA FC Chairman Mick Browning and our thoughts are with his wife Pat, and his family. Mick passed away on Monday following a lengthy battle with leukaemia. Despite his illness, the popular and much-loved local man carried out his duties as YM Chairman and remained heavily involved at a club held extremely close to his heart. Mick lived in Horsham his entire life and was a stalwart of Sussex football with his fifty-year plus career being celebrated earlier this month at Gorings Mead with ‘An Evening with Mick Browning’. The Southern Combination Football League have led the early tributes to the football legend, commenting: “It is with great sadness that today we have been told of the passing of Mick Browning, Chairman of Horsham YMCA FC. A true gent of football. RIP.” Mick started out at YM as a fourteen year old centre forward and went onto play for Horsham, Reading, Tooting & Mitcham, Lewes, Maidstone and Worthing. Mick made 49 appearances for Sussex and in 1964 earned two amateur international caps, playing against Scotland and New Zealand and scoring in both games. Before opting to move from Horsham FC to Reading Mick had
attracted the interest of a number of top clubs including Tottenham, Nottingham Forest and Manchester City; the then Spurs boss Bill Nicholson wrote to Mick three times asking him to sign. During a playing career that lasted over 20 years true gent Mick was never booked or sent off and scored over 600 goals. Off the field, Mick managed Horsham, YM, Pulborough, Sun Alliance and Horsham Olympic. He later spent fourteen years as Chairman of Horsham FC, before taking on the same role at YM in 2004. Horsham YMCA FC President and dear friend, Ron Moulding, commented: “Mick was a lovely man. He was extremely easy to get on with and was very easy going. I will always have fond memories of me and him, often just the two of us, travelling to away games in Kent when YM played in the Ryman League, not returning home until gone midnight, and then having to sort the kit out. A lot of the views of the future of the YMCA and things that have happened at the club were planned during our travels. We have carried out a lot of work at the club in recent years and one of the disappointing things for me is that he didn’t get to see it all finished.” Horsham FC Life President and lifelong friend, Frank King, said “I am so sad to hear about Mick, he was a great lad. I knew Mick as a youngster and his passion for sport, especially football and cricket, stayed with him through-
Mick Browning with his two England amateur international caps out his life. When he could not play anymore his contribution off the field to Horsham FC, Horsham YMCA and Sussex football was immense. In the last few years, despite his illness, he never complained and always praised his doctors and nurses; Horsham has
Mick with goalkeeping legend Alex Stepney, a former team mate at Tooting & Mitchum
lost a huge community figure with Mick’s sad passing.” After being diagnosed with leukaemia, Mick became a frequent fundraiser for Cancer Research UK, and with the help of numerous events held at the club, he was able to donate more than
£3000 to the charity in recent years. YM will hold a minute’s silence before this Saturday’s home league fixture with AFC Uckfield Town and the players will wear black armbands to commemorate the great man. The club’s flag is flying at half mast.
Tough opposition for Hornets and Bears Depleted YM edge to victory Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor Both Horsham and Broadbridge Heath have been given tough draws in the third round of the Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup. Horsham have been drawn away to Vanarama National League South team Whitehawk FC, who won 4-1 away at Horsham’s league rivals Lancing in the last round. Brighton based Whitehawk are currently fourth in the Vanarama South division and well set for a place in the play offs for promotion to the Vanarama National League. Horsham would have been hoping for a kinder draw after knocking out higher league opposition in Ryman League Peacehaven & Telscombe in the last round. Broadbridge Heath, who disposed of Ringmer 4-0 in the previous round, will have to be at their very best if they are to progress into the Quarter Finals after being drawn at home to Ryman Premier Burgess Hill Town. Burgess Hill are currently mid-table in the Premier after being promoted following their runaway league performance in Division 1 South last season. All round three matches are to be played on or before December 9.

Dom di Paola's Hornets face a tough test
Horsham YMCA overcame player unavailability and torrid match conditions to record an important three points on Saturday, as they narrowly beat Wick & Barnham United 1-0 at Crabtree Park. Dan Sullivan’s volley nine minutes before half time was all that eventually separated the two sides, although YM spurned several chances to extend their lead following the sending off of Wickers’ midfielder Ben Anderton for violent conduct midway through the second period. The victory lifts Peter Buckland’s side up to fourth in the Premier Division standings, four points behind league leaders Horsham, but with a game in hand over their local rivals. The YM boss commented: “It wasn’t a very enjoyable game to watch, to play in or to manage in, but we got the points and we’re going home happy.
It’s one of those where you’ve just got to come down, smash and grab three points and get out. And it could prove to be a very big three points. It was effectively our game in hand over a lot of teams.” A cold, swirling wind and an appalling outfield made life tough for both sides, although the visitors, without four first team regulars, adapted well. “It was hard fought under difficult circumstances.” Buckland added. “We were missing Ash (Dugdale, unavailable), Dean Carden (injured), Craney (Matt Crane, unwell) and Luke Gedling (also unwell), who are four key players. Then we lost Luke Donaldson to a really bad ankle injury in the first half, and being thin on the ground already, we had to shuffle the pack on what was a very difficult pitch. It could so easily have been three or four. But that happens in football, and sometimes they will go and sneak a late equaliser, as we know only too well of late. So we did well to keep our shape and discipline, and I’m glad to go home with the three points.” YM Team: Fox, D. Sullivan, Pollard, Gathern, Evans, Hibbert, Wright, Donaldson (Burgess 31) Brown, Schaaf, N. Sullivan. Unused subs: Lockwood.
