Police probe death of 22-year-old phil dennett

News Editor

An inquest will hear details of how a young man from Horsham whose body was found at a rail line died. A schoolboy discovered the 22-year-old’s body last Thursday morning and police officers inspected the scene just before 9am, near a play area in Amberley Close, not far from Littlehaven station. The man’s body was removed for a post-mortem examination, the results of which will form part of a report to West Sussex Coroner Penelope Schofield. Police then began establishing the man’s identity so that relatives could be informed. It is routine for deaths on railways lines or sudden unexplained deaths to be the subject of an inquest, where reports from British Transport Police investigators and any available witnesses will be considered by a coroner. No date has yet been set for the hearing, and at the time of the District Post going to press this week the name of the man had not been released to media.

A spokesman for British Transport Police told the Post this week: “We would not normally release the identity of the deceased person until an inquest is opened. We will be preparing a file for the coroner in this case.” At present the exact circumstances of how the man came to die and why he was in the area are unknown and still being investigated but police have already ruled out foul play based on the information they have already have. Train services were cancelled between Horsham and Three Bridges while preliminary investigations were carried out at the spot where the man was discovered and the body was removed. It is believed the man might have been at the spot for some time before he was discovered, and the post mortem might clarify that. West Sussex Coroner’s Office said earlier this week no inquest had yet been opened into the death. A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “We were called to a foot crossing close to Rowlands Road in Horsham at 8.43am on Thursday, 26 November, following reports of a body close to the line. “Colleagues from Sussex Police also attended and a 22-yearold man from Horsham was pro-

A family which has been running shops in the Horsham area for more than 50 years has opened a new store in Holbrook, Horsham. Owned by father and son team, Phil and Chris Shelley, Shelley’s Budgens of Holbrook marks the first foray into symbol retailing for the pair. Phil and Chris previously ran a Shelley’s News store on the site but took the decision to convert the store to a Budgens when the adjacent unit became available. Their brand new Shelley’s Budgens is now a complete convenience store covering 2,800 sq. ft. which also features an in-store Post Office. Chris said: “I am really excited about opening the doors of our new Shelley’s Budgens, it’s been a real transformation but I feel confident we’re offering a store the Holbrook community can be proud of. We are family business and we’ve been running stores within the Horsham area

for generations. We pride ourselves on providing top quality food, excellent customer service and supporting local suppliers, joining Budgens will help us build on this ethos.” The store was officially opened by Sioux Winn and Pam Day, two of the Shelley’s longest-serving members of staff with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The first Shelley shop was opened in the 1950s in Warnham by Phil's father Norman. It was a traditional village newsagent’s shop with sweets by the quarter pound. The shop was a great success and the Shelley van could be seen across Horsham delivering newspapers to local villages daily and the Evening News as Norman was the agent supplying other shops in the area. Norman went on to open two more shops in the 1960s in Broadbridge Heath. These shops marked the start of a family business and were run by Phil and his brother Tim.

All set for the 10th annual Billifest

Denise Campbell, Chairman of the Billingshurst Community Partnership, with the three winners of the poster competition The 10th annual Billifest Family Fun Day & Christmas Fayre takes place in Jengers Mead in the heart of the village tomorrow from 9am to 4pm. And three outstanding young artists from Billingshurst Primary School have won the top awards in the fayre's poster competition. The top winning picture is featured on the BilliFest poster and on

the cover of the programme flyer. The entries were judged by local artist/potter Terry Griffin and all the works will be on display at BilliFest. BilliFest is the community’s major winter event and attracts more than 1,500 people. According to Ken Johnson, the organizing team chairman from the Billingshurst Community Partner-

ship, it will be bigger and better. Mr Johnson noted that Santa has already confirmed his attendance and emphasised that Santa’s Grotto at BilliFest is always free, and that every child receives a gift. New this year is The Great Gnome Hunt. Children have to find the names of 25 gnomes that will be in Billingshurst shop windows from December 5-15. Participants can collect entry forms from Henry Adams or Fowlers Estate Agents in the High Street. Great prizes include Family Tickets for Cinderella at Worthing Pavilion, and for Beauty and the Beast at the Capitol in Horsham. There are also tickets to Drusilla Zoo Park and Fishers Adventure Park Farm. Mr Johnson said: “There will be lots of family entertainment. The Weald School Sixth Form will be operating Radio Weald and providing the music. There will be animal petting, and performers include George the Sax player, swinging Rob Nichols, Lifestyle Fitness ‘join in’ sessions, the Billingshurst Choral Society, the Billingshurst Ukulele Band, Cotillion Sussex folk group, Horsham Boom Tribe Samba Band, and Punch & Judy. And of course the annual raffle with more than 30 prizes.”

Horsham lose the Sussex cricket festival Sussex Cricket has confirmed that the Horsham Festival of Cricket will not go ahead in 2016, as the festival is financially unviable without third party support. It has been widely publicised that the Horsham Festival has been under threat for the past few seasons, and the event only took place in 2014 due to a private donation at the eleventh hour. Despite continuous focus and effort we have not been able to secure a headline sponsor since 2011. The festival has received limited support from the local business community in recent years. In addition, a large downturn in corporate hospitality has made the staging of five days of cricket (a County Championship match and a Royal London One-Day Cup match) not possible at the outground in 2016.

Jim May, Chairman of Sussex Cricket said, “In recent years we are one of the very few counties that has played two festivals away from our headquarters. “We regret that in 2016, we are unable to make the sums work at Horsham. Staging festival cricket in other parts of the country is helped by a mixture of financial support from tourist boards, local authorities and corporate sponsors who value the benefit that county matches bring to their community and to the local economy. “Zac Toumazi, Chief Executive of Sussex Cricket and his team have worked tirelessly with our partners at Horsham Sports Club to engage the business community.” Zac Toumazi added, “I’m very disappointed that the festival is not taking place. I sincerely hope that this is

a temporary pause in this long tradition. “It should be made clear that Sussex is not closing the door on a return to Horsham. There is no reason why, in a more supportive financial climate, the Festival at Cricket Field Road cannot take place in the future. The Sussex Commercial Team, along with Horsham Sports Club, will continue their efforts to try to find a sponsor for the future. “We remain committed to taking the game around the county and Sussex will hold a festival at the Friends of Arundel Castle Cricket Club between 22nd and 26th June. The Arundel Festival will feature a County Championship and a NatWest T20 Blast fixture taking place against Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire respectively”.

Farlington girls take to the water in eight-week programme Ten students at Farlington School have completed an introductory course to kayaking, sailing and paddle boarding. The 8-week programme was conducted at Southwater Watersports Centre. Farlington’s sporting ethos is to encourage girls to participate and enjoy sports, to maintain their interest and develop a healthy life beyond school. In Years 11 and above girls are given the option to try a wide variety of activities from golf to indoor climbing. The instructors - Adrian, CarolAnn and Peter - at Southwater Watersports Centre focused on making the activities enjoyable and informative. The girls found it challenging, yet exciting, to try something outside the normal curriculum. The Farlington students learned how to sail safely in both calm and windy conditions. They worked in pairs with one student taking con-

Under reefed sails in the final week, the girls needed all their newly acquired sailing skills to avoid capsizing in the gusty wind. The exciting afternoon will live long in the memory of all the participants. Farlington’s John Dwyer, who took the students to Southwater, said: “The girls acquired so much from the watersports activities. In addition to the physical benefits of these sports, other skills were also enhanced: teamwork, leadership, communication and confidence. “The sports options which are external to the school are always popular and build on the skills students have gained within the more traditional school sporting activities. A big thank-you must go to the staff at Southwater who made it such an enjoyable experience for the girls.”

Southwater Christmas Festiv W ere you there? Did you see the drama at the Southwater Christmas Festival in Lintot Square? When 'Santa' visited Southwater, he got 'stuck' going down the chimney! And he began to shout… but 'luckily' West Sussex Fire Service was on hand to 'rescue' him; demonstrating to the crowds and public, just some of their skills and equipment. Many thanks go out to West Sussex Fire Service for their attendance at this event. Once Santa had safely landed, visitors were entertained with carols from the Southwater Junior Academy choir; songs by Nathanael Landskroner and Joe Conaboy (both from X-Factor), Jodie Munday and local groups The Unknown, the Seawolves and Red Star Thistles. Sussex Police were out in force - aren’t they all looking so young these days? Local dance schools, KDF Academy and Elsden School of Dance, delighted the crowds with their skills and well choreographed performances, and DJ Dave Summers kept the party atmosphere going with music for all. The library and Southwater Youth Project ran a Nativity Story time. Professor 'Doc' Eclaire and

D'Jon M'Stard from Beauty and the Beast (Capitol Theatre), spread some Christmas sparkle as they entertained young and old. As dusk approached, the Horsham Youth Concert band lit up Lintot Square with their performance of festive music and songs. At 5pm Santa, ably assisted by Chris Andre, switched on the lights on the Lintot Square Christmas Tree. This year, the square's Christmas lights shone even brighter, as Southwater was awarded £1,000 by Blanchere Illuminations, which was spent on additional lights (in a red and white colour scheme) to enhance and highlight the Southwater War Memorial. Southwater Parish Council wanted to provide a reflective environment for the WW1 centenary. Thanks to the hard word of local residents and businesses, Lintot Square was filled with craft stalls, market and food produce and lots more. The event concluded with community carols around the tree and an amazing last set by Chris Andre, which left the crowd dancing home. If you missed the event, then make a note to attend next year's. And if you were there, don’t forget to hand in your 'find the Santa' competition forms.

Beware the dangers of The Christ’s Hospital band shines in the rain at Lord Mayor’s Show 'button' batteries

Button batteries can damage your health, local shoppers have been warned. The batteries are used to power many children’s toys, but are highly dangerous if accidently swallowed. Peter Aston, West Sussex County Council’s Trading Standards Manager, said: “This is not scaremongering. As well as being a choking hazard, if a button battery is swallowed by a child, the electrical charge creates caustic soda inside the body. “This can burn a hole through the throat and major blood vessels and children can bleed to death. We shall be buying a selection of cheap button battery powered toys in the run-up to Christmas to check they are safe.” The warning follows a campaign to raise awareness of the issues by the Child Accident Prevention Trust.

David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “We really urge parents and carers to ensure all toys that use button batteries have the battery compartment properly secured to meet the required toy safety standards. “There are many cheap imports where this is not the case. Before buying, we suggest people check to make sure the batteries aren’t easily accessible to young children.” Parents and carers are also warned not to leave replacement button cell batteries or items powered by button cells within reach of young children. If any readers have bought a toy that allows easy access to button cell batteries you can let Trading Standards know by calling Citizens’ Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506 or by going online to www. westsussex.gov.uk/tsreport

The Christ’s Hospital Band gave a tremendous performance at the Lord Mayor’s Show, London’s most colourful and spectacular parade. The show is always one of the most prestigious engagements in the school’s calendar. This year, the day marked the show’s 800th anniversary, attracting more than half a million spectators and 7000 participants from around the world. The 120 young instrumentalists from Christ’s Hospital played magnificently as they marched three miles in the pouring rain between Bank and Aldwych. Band Captain Max Thomas, aged 17, said: “I am very proud of everyone for their efforts and resilience throughout the day. Marching in the pouring rain wasn’t easy. The Lord Mayor's Show is a highlight of the band's year, and the packed crowds on the London streets always make it worthwhile. I couldn't be prouder of all of us, and I won't forget this for a long time to come.” The Christ’s Hospital Band was first invited to be part of this famous procession in 1981 and so impressed the Lord Mayor that it has been invited to participate ever since. At least four Old Blues (former pupils) have served as Lord Mayor of the City of London. The show marked

the first day of office for the new Lord Mayor, Lord Mountevans who is also a member of CH’s Council of Almoners (Trustee) and a strong supporter of the School. The history of Christ’s Hospital and its important links with the City are included a book published to cel-

ebrate the Lord Mayor’s Show ‘800 Years 1215-2015’.The book provides a portrait of the show across all periods and from a variety of perspectives and some of its fascinating themes, presenting a kaleidoscopic vision of one of the nation’s best loved annual events.

Remember lost loved ones at The Cooperative’s late night shopping event Visitors to Horsham's late night shopping event on Thursday, December 10 will be able to remember lost loved ones at a memorial tree. The memorial tree is to take centre stage at The Co-operative Funeralcare, 36 East Street. The funeral home is open from 5 pm until 9 pm when people will be able to leave memorial cards on the tree and the staff will be serving mulled wine and mince pies whilst The Horsham Pleasure Singers Ladies Choir perform at 7 pm. Last year more than 900 of the Co-operative’s funeral homes housed a memorial tree and activities raised over £13,000 for charity. The Co-operative Group and British Red Cross have joined together to help tackle loneliness and isolation across communities in the UK. Families, can if they wish, leave a small donation to support this work. Natalie Thomas, Funeral Director at Horsham, said: "Christmas can be an extremely difficult and painful time for families and this is the third year we have offered a memorial tree in honour of those no longer with us. It has always proved to be a great help for bereaved relatives and friends. “We know that Christmas and New Year, in particular, are a time when people look back and remember those they’ve lost. We hope our memorial Christmas tree will again help families to make a tribute to their loved ones at this difficult time,”

West Street an important note in the Suffragette movement

Jeremy Knight from Horsham Museum recalls Horsham’s links with suffragettes, whose work was featured in a recent film, in this article. In 1913 a strange shop opened on the second floor of 60 West Street whose existence today virtually forgotten but it represents an important part of the woman’s suffrage movement. The shop was Qui Vive Corps Depot. The only notice that exists today of it in Horsham is a flyer/poster in the museum’s collections. Qui Vive Corps was originally called Marchers’ Qui Vive Corps and founded in 1912 by Mrs Florence De Fonblanque following on from and in the spirit of enjoyment experienced by women who went on the Woman’s March in 1912. The March from Edinburgh to London saw six women in total complete it, of which at least two became founding members of the Corps. The basic aim was to provide an umbrella type organisation which all women suffrage groups could join. Then at a moment’s notice the women could be “mobilised” offering its services impartially whenever extra women were required to achieve a specific purpose. Although not military it was organised on military lines, partly in order to show the men that the women of England were capable of organisation, discipline and comradeship, though they did swear not to enter into any militant action whilst wearing the uniform of brown with green cockade and badge. What were the crises talked about at the start of the poster? Although there had been some movement, by 1908 on granting women the vote the Liberals who were broadly pro suffrage were led by Asquith who hated the thought of it. The Tories were led by Balfour and then Bonar Law who were mildly in favour but whose followers opposed the idea. This led to political stalemate. In 1908 the National Anti-Suffrage League was formed, which countermined its own views by being very well organised. In 1910 General Election there were three suffrage candidates but they only received 696 votes in total, though a 280,000 petition was signed supporting it. By March 1912 things had spiralled out of control with attacks on private property and a rampage in Knightsbridge. The following February Christabel Pankhurst, one of the key pro suffrage organisers, followers smashed the or-

chid house at Kew, set railway carriages alight and bombed Lloyd George’s house. Two months later the Government would pass the bill that allowed hunger-strikers to be released on health grounds only to be re-arrested if they didn’t pledge future “good behaviour”. It was this militancy that the Corps was against as well as the crises they refer to. If anything the poster portrays the key elements of middle class values – the walk or marches to places, the list of products which later in the century would be portray the Women’s Institute, the self-learning through books and publications, the art of debate and public speaking, not how to make banners but how to speak. Whilst the last paragraph which jars today, typifies the concerns of the period, of racial purity - women who love their race, not race as in fellow women, but racial type, for the mention of Empire makes that clear. The reference to White Slave trade was shorthand for issues concerning prostitution. Following the death on the Titanic of the campaigning journalist W. T. Stead, who had done much to make Victorian and Edwardian public aware of the issue which in turn led Scotland Yard to set up the White Slavery Bureau, Parliament in 1912 passed the Criminal Law Amendment (White Slavery) Bill. When Pankhurst Came to Horsham Another perspective on the war effort was shown later on in 1916 when one of the champions of women’s suffrage, Miss Sylvia Pankhurst came to Horsham to promote the repeal of conscription. The account following gives a full flavour of the hostility to the speaker and her cause, a cause that some in Horsham actively engaged in as there was a group calling itself “The Horsham Council Against Conscription”. Unfortunately we have no records of the group and probably after the war the desire to keep records of such a group wasn’t uppermost in people’s minds, if at all. A Carfax Demonstration Protected by about a score of policemen, with others in reserve Miss Sylvia Pankhurst, Mr W. W. Kensett (Hon Secretary to “the Horsham Council against conscription”) and Mr Alec Gossip, Secretary of the Furnishing Trades Union held what the handbills and posters styled “a demonstration in favour of the repeal of the Military Service Acts” in the Carfax last evening. There was a vast crowd, good humoured, but sufficiently hostile to ren-

der the meeting abortive and speaker inaudible. Miss Sylvia Pankhurst arrived on the scene (in company with the Misses Kensett) carrying a bundle of newspapers. Mr Gossip, who was announced to preside, opened the meeting in dumb show, and then the lady speaker fluently addressed the crowds, but could only be heard within a narrow circle. For the most part the rotten oranges and lemons, tufts of grass, cabbage &c &c were badly aimed, but all too soon her white straw hat was dirtied and presently a nasty whack on the forehead stopped the flow of speech. At times the crowd cheered, either to thoroughly drown the remarks or to kindly give needful rest. Then there was booing and hooting, varied with the singing of “Rule Britannia.” And all the while, now ebbing and now flowing came a gentle stream of missiles into the circle, the general public often getting the benefit. No wonder Mr. Kensett persisted in a permanent smile. At 8.35 there was an ugly rush, and the impromptu platform and speakers were overturned. However the police came to the rescue and Miss Pankhurst, who also had the support of Mr E. E. Lawrence J.P., and Mr. Townsend, came through unscathed. The constabulary charged back and widened the circle, and then Mr. Kensett, all smiles, spoke briefly. At 8.40 the meeting broke up. Some of the policemen escorted Mr. Kensett southwards to East Street, but the bulk of the vast crowd followed Sgt. Wareham and several constables in the opposite direction. They had charge of the lady. In the upper and wider part of North street, where there was an ample supply of “ammunition” loosened by the recent rain, tufts of grass of varying sizes an weights were thrown, and the scene was a lively one. Near the upper entrance to Horsham Park a cab met the fugitive. She was hurried into the vehicle, which turned, and, with a policeman on the box, went off at full speed, followed by nimble pedestrians anxious to “keep the pot boiling”. To their chagrin the “cabby” eventually whipped up over the railway bridge. Apparently, the chief demonstrator was not booking from Horsham station. She was certainly favoured. Not only were the police in remarkably strong force, but Horsham for last night only had been placed “out of bounds” to those in Roffey Camp. Pictured are reminders of the historic time including one of Sylvia Pankhurst.

Rotary young musicians hit top note High Sheriff to be a guest at the Storrington fayre

On Wednesday November 25 students gathered at the Forest School for the first round in the Rotary National Young Musician competition sponsored by the Horsham Rotary Club. There are two categories in the competition, vocal and instrumental. Each student performed two pieces of contrasting music within a 10 minute period. The winner of the Vocal competition was Eleanor Harvie with

Elizabeth Elliott winning the Instrumental competition playing a treble recorder. Both Eleanor and Elizabeth, students from Farlington School, will compete in February 2016 in the District final. The judges, Mrs Alison Sutton, head of music at Rikkyo School and Steve Dummer, conductor of the Horsham Sympathy Orchestra praised all the contestants on their performance and gave helpful hints on where each one could improve even further.

Gordon McConnell from the Rotary Club of Horsham said this was the third year the club had run this event, the first in 2012/2013 when a very young Rosie Sutton from Millais School moved through the heats and became the youngest National Winner of this competition. Call for more firefighters Top award for Bramber gardens The historic St Mary’s House and Gardens in Bramber has been awarded ‘Highly Commended’ in the prestigious Tourism South East 2015/16 Beautiful South Awards. St Mary’s was up against fierce competition, with more than 120 entries in 16 categories, out of which 62 finalists have been chosen from the the South East’s tourism businesses. The Highly Commended Award is a significant achievement, and is particularly appropriate as owners Peter Thorogood and Roger Linton have this year completed 30 years of restoration. Through their hard work and dedication, and a small army of nearly 60 volunteers and helpers, St. Mary’s has become a major tourist attraction in the south-east, and an important part of our national heritage.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is recruiting for the first time in more than eight years. Potential applicants can visit its website to complete the online application process. Lee Neale, Deputy Chief Fire Officer for West Sussex, said: “Becoming a firefighter in West Sussex offers a fantastic career opportunity. Our firefighters are professionally trained to respond to fires and a range of other emergencies including road traffic collisions, chemical accidents, flooding and other natural disasters. “They also spend an increasing amount of time working to prevent emergencies. They do this in a variety of ways from visiting vulnerable residents in their homes, educating and inspiring young people, advis-

ing businesses and engaging with people in the heart of our communities.” David Barling, West Sussex County Council's Cabinet Member for Residents' Services, added: “This is an exciting opportunity to join a dedicated team of firefighters who are committed to delivering the best possible service to people in West Sussex. We are anticipating a high number of applications and a robust and highly competitive recruitment process. “Applications are welcomed from all members of our diverse communities. Ideal applicants will be physically fit, have excellent communication skills and be passionate about protecting people whether that is through operational activity or prevention and education work.”

Learning to speak out with confidence Water meter success

Students from local schools had a chance to hone their rhetorical skills at a public speaking competition organised by the Rotary Club of Horsham..

The event was held this year at Farlington School and the standard was exceptionally high at both intermediate and senior levels. Topics were challenging - and

ranged from the Farlington intermediate team on colonising space to an entertaining take on modern parents from the Millais girls. All the speakers showed great assurance and put across their points with a combination of humour and passion. Farlington senior team made their topic of horse ballet informative and enjoyable, and they will proceed to the next round, together with the Farlington intermediate team. All of the participants were offered helpful feedback from the expert speakers, Tony Turner and Mel Leddy, who judged the competition. Credit to the Rotary Club for the effort they put in to promote not only individual presentation skills but also goodwill and cooperation between the local schools.

The installation of meters has saved millions of litres of water in the district over the last five years. Southern Water’s five-year programme to install nearly 450,000 meters ends this month. The programme was launched in 2010 and in that time it has led to: • A saving of 27 million litres of water a day – enough to meet the daily water needs of towns the size of Worthing and Hastings combined • An average reduction in water bills of £162 a year for 62 per cent of metered households • Reductions in energy bills too as heating water in the home makes up around 30 per cent of the average household’s energy bill. But this isn’t just a Southern Water success. Explained Richard Price, Southern Water’s Director of Engi-

neering and Construction: “It’s very much a triumph for our customers, many of whom have changed the way they use water to make huge savings. “This might be something as simple as turning off the tap when brushing your teeth, using a water butt instead of a hosepipe or not switching on the dishwasher until it has a full load. Adopting these and many other water efficiency measures today will help us to ensure that there will be water available when we turn the tap on in the future. “Indeed, our customers have worked hard to reduce their consumption by 16.5 per cent, against a national average of 10 per cent when having a water meter installed. With nearly 90 per cent of all households now metered, our customers must be amongst the most water efficient in the country.”

New food at The Malt Shovel is smokin’ If you are a fan of American food shows, such as Man V Food or Diners drive ins and dives, or a fan of slowly cooked smoked barbecued meat, served with a pint of real ale, or indeed a fan of independent traders getting things spot on, then you need to get yourselves down to The Malt Shovel in Horsham

The story began when Sam paid his weekly visit to Horsham’s Carfax market and satisfied his hunger pangs with a slowly smoked pulled pork roll, bought from The Soul Street market stall Landlord, Sam Clayton and Owner/Executive Chef for Soul Street Kitchen, Charlie Boud - both desperately passionate about food and drink - have recently joined forces to bring the hungry residents of Horsham a taste of US/UK fusion. The story began when Sam paid his weekly visit to Horshams Carfax market and satisfied his hunger pangs with a slowly smoked pulled pork roll, bought from The Soul Street market stall... Whilst savouring this delectable

delight of sweet smokey meatiness, Sam had an Epiphany. A rambling conversation ensued with Charlie and an agreement was made for Soul Street to take on the Malt Shovel Kitchen. Soul Street Kitchen prides itself on quality, freshly prepared food. "All of our free range locally sourced meats are prepared on site and left in the Soul Train (a cast iron smoke oven on wheels), for hours, to smoke perfectly," says Charlie "we also prepare our fresh sesame seed slaw, daily, along with our famous herb and chilli sauces". The Malt Shovel has moved on leaps and bounds, since Sam's arrival 2 years ago, and with the new addition of Soul Street Kitchen, can only continue to provide its customers with a great experience. "I am in the comforting knowle d g e that the food, at The Malt Shovel, is being cooked by someone who shares my exact-

ing standards for quality and service" adds Sam. So if you are looking for a pint and lunchtime snack, or an evening meal, packed with flavour and not too hard on the pocket, look no further than The Malt Shovel, Horsham.

Sink or swim? - Why small businesses fail This month, business expert Janette Whitney explains how to avoid business failure janette whitney www.whitneyassocs.co.uk

Now is the time for planning your business strategy for next year, but will your business be sinking or swimming in 2016? Businesses are at the greatest risk of failure in the first few years of trading – fairly obvious you might think? Although chances of survival increase the older and more experienced a business and its management become, 50% of VAT registered businesses still fail within 5 years. It may take up to 10 years for a business to stabilise. The main reason for the high failure rate of small, recently established businesses is that the owner lacks experience in managing all aspects of a business at the same time. It is easy to be distracted by solving one problem and miss others until it is too late. A business must be kept in balance, even when it is growing rapidly. A manager must, for example, realise that a business can fail as much through achieving too many sales as it can through too few sales. Most failure can be avoided if the right measures are taken. COMMON REASONS FOR FAILURE In surveys of small businesses, the biggest problems identified by owner/managers are: • Lack of sales/low turnover • Debtors/obtaining payment/

cashflow Competition from bigger firms Professional business advisers take a different view, looking at the bigger picture of running a successful business. Common reasons for failure are: • Businesses are often undercapitalised • Managers believe that more capital would solve their problems and don’t address deeper seated issues. • They don’t set and review targets. • They don’t regularly monitor •

Horsham’s Abbeyfield champions independent living for the elderly Business News Martin Read – Business Reporter Abbeyfield House in Horsham’s Hurst Road promotes independent living for a very fortunate group of elderly residents. The house provides individual bespoke accommodation for male and female occupants in the thirteen single rooms. Manager Kristina Elliott says: “Like most of the residents, I’m from Horsham and I really love my role at Abbeyfield. We dedicate our time here to the wellbeing, comfort and safety of our charges and really revel in seeing them enjoy themselves together. And it’s great that they integrate into the community, too – we’ve got all of the amenities close at hand!” The Abbeyfield Society is a well established not for profit charity, providing affordable accommodation in over 500 houses around the UK. Abbeyfield have an exceptional understanding of the experience of getting older and fund academic research to keep society abreast with social developments affecting the UK’s ageing population. A thoughtful, caring approach is taken to ensure that residents appreciate their older age avoiding isolation and loneliness, Kristina adding: “Every

newcomer has their needs assessed and we help with laundry, cleaning and personal care if required.” 94 year old resident Hilda Craven has an incredibly sharp and interesting recall of life around Horsham, telling the District Post: “It’s like being in a nice, small family! Everyone is very pleasant: we are all treated like important people. Abbeyfield was recomm e n d e d to me by a neighbour when I was living near Cowfold so I tried it for a fortnight and several years later I‘m still here! Being a country girl the garden took my eye and the food is very good – we get excellent lunches and teas and always meet in the conservatory lounge for a coffee and a chat in the mornings. I’m lucky, my room overlooks the garden so I see the antics of the squirrels among our lovely flowering shrubs and we sit outside as of-

ten as we can.” Hilda keeps herself busy tending the indoor plants and helping other residents. At Abbeyfield there are regular activities including armchair exercise and Scrabble sessions, visits from volunteers at nearby Collyers and a forthcoming Christmas evening. Residents have their own doctors, some of whom visit the home and there is a 24 hour care line. With her popular, intelligent dog Buddy entertaining the residents, Kristina sums up saying: “It’s good for everyone here to feel valued. We give them a friendly environment and warm service. I find it really rewarding being here and the residents seem to be happy, too!” Abbeyfield have clearly found the ideal blend of individual independence coupled with quality, stimulating support and good neighbourliness.

Alexandra Burke dazzles in ‘The Bodyguard’

T

hree-time Brit nominee and X-Factor winner, Alexandra Burke, dazzled audiences at Crawley's Hawth Theatre, last week, with her portrayal of Rachel Marron, in the hugely sucessful West End hit, The Bodyguard. Alexandra rose to fame, after winning the fifth series of The X Factor. Her debut number one single, Hallelujah, sold over one million copies in the UK - a first for a British female soloist. Her first album, Overcome, saw the release of her subsequent number one singles Bad Boys and Start Without You. In 2011 she embarked on her first solo tour and was invited by Beyoncé to support her I Am... Tour. Her second album, Heartbreak on Hold, was released in June 2012 and later this year sees the release of her third album. Based on Lawrence Kasdan’s 1992 Oscar nominated Warner Bros. film, The Bodyguard starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, and was nominated for four Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical and Best Set Design, and won Best New Musical at the Whatsonstage Awards. In all matinee performances, Rachel Marron was played by Zoe Birkett - probably best known as the highest placing female contestant in ITV’s Pop Idol, 2002. Since then she has appeared in the West End productions of Priscilla Queen of the Desert and originated the female lead in Thriller Live. Her other theatre credits include the Acid Queen in Tommy and Maureen in Rent.

Fans will have thought there were two Bon Jovis on stage that night, so much does lead singer, Tony Pearce, resemble the star! Tickets are £17.50 and can be purchased from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting: www. hawth.co.uk.

Remastered: Bosch to Bellotto – a new exciting exhibition at Petworth House The art collection at Petworth House & Park, is the most important in the care of the National Trust. Remastered: From Bosch to Bellotto, is the first exhibition to bring together its key early European paintings in a well-lit, modern gallery setting. Several of the works have been cleaned, reframed and all feature new interpretation. This exhibition follows the hugely successful Mr. Turner show and further echoes Constable’s description of Petworth as ‘that house of art’. A notable inclusion is the famous 16th-century full-length portrait of Henry VIII, from the studio of Hans Holbein. Usually displayed high in the panelling of Petworth’s Carved Room, it returns from its celebrated inclusion in the Real Tudors exhibi-

tion (National Portrait Gallery and Paris Museums), to be hung at a height to enthral visitors and enable close sight of its fine detail. 'Remastered' additionally includes previously unexhibited works of international importance, from the private rooms of Petworth House. These include Andrea del Sarto’s Madonna and Child, with Saint John, and Paris Bordone’s Portrait of a young woman. These works were not accepted by HM Government in the 1950s, when a portion of Petworth’s art collection became the first to be given in lieu of inheritance tax. They are now considered worthy of inclusion within a national collection. These extraordinary paintings will be displayed alongside exciting and rarely seen contextual treasures from

Petworth, including a first edition of Shakespeare and his contemporary Thomas Harriot’s drawings of the moon’s surface, which pre-date those of Galileo, and are the earliest in existence. In addition to their modern exhibition gallery, visitors can enjoy three historic state rooms, within Petworth House. These will be rehung and re-lit to offer a refreshingly new experience of the famous mansion, and a valuable opportunity to explore the great collectors behind the ‘house of art’ and their outstanding acquisitions of 17th and 18th century masterpieces by Teniers, van Dyck, Claude, Bellotto and many others. The exhibition will run between January 9 and March 6 of next year.

Atlantis make a noise at Christmas Cracker Swimming Richard Hayes – Atlantis SC Atlantis swimming club hosted their annual Christmas Cracker swimming gala over last weekend. This year Atlantis welcomed 15 swimming clubs from across the South East of England. The gala took place over a hectic two day period at Pavilions in the park with over 20 hours of swimming. Swimmers aged from nine to 36 years of age raced in all four competition strokes over distances ranging from 50 meter sprints to 400 meter endurance events. There were some amazing performances from the Atlantis swimmers. This weekend the boys smashed it! Some of the outstanding performers were Aiden Spalling totting up six gold medals and a

whooping 268 points, Daryan De Klerk with six golds, nine year old flyer Jamie Smith with four golds and a phenomenal score of 297 from Toby Van Der Hut, making him the top Atlantis scorer. Top scoring girl from Atlantis was the talented Ethel Whyman with 238 points and four gold’s; in form Millie Weeden notched up five golds with junior club captain Freya Fulcher weighing in with four golds. Ever dependable Beth Britten was taking it easy racing in only four events but netted gold in all of them. Atlantis once again came away as top club with a score of over 8500 more than 1000 points ahead of the second place team. Training continues on a daily basis for the Atlantis athletes ready for a busy season of competition.

Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter In a superb display – the best performance most have seen – Horsham totally dominated high flying Winchester, inflicting their first defeat of the season and reducing them to bickering ball chasers.

Horsham came out hard, creating early chances, but Winchester somehow held them at bay until Matt Hough converted a short corner Horsham's Steph Dent Saturday November 28 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Div.1 Horsham Ladies 2 - 1 Barnes Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham continued their fine run of form with an excellent win over second placed Barnes after holding them to an away draw earlier in the season. The conditions were miserable, with squally showers sweeping across the pitch, but Horsham really lifted the spirits of their loyal supporters. Steph Dent opened the scoring after 10 minutes, her goal following one of Horsham’s three short corners earned in the first half. On the resumption Horsham continued to pass and defend well but Barnes finally managed to break through and equalise. Further Horsham pressure

resulted in two more short corners, CJ White clinching the well-deserved win from the second set piece. Horsham Team Manager Jane Denman told the District Post: “Our coach Dan Shingles gave the girls clear instructions, emphasising that they must come out really wanting to win – and they certainly did! It’s great to go into the break with another three points.” At just past the halfway stage of the season ,the ladies’ league now takes a Christmas and New Year break. Horsham – still fourth, on level points with third placed Southgate, but with an inferior goal difference - return to league action on January 30 with a tough home game against current leaders Surbiton. Meanwhile, the ladies travel to Burgess Hill for a Sussex Cup quarter final on December 12 followed by the annual indoor national tournament – at Whitgift School in January.

Horsham came out hard, creating early chances, but Winchester somehow held them at bay until Matt Hough converted a short corner in the 20th minute before promptly repeating the dose. It was all Horsham for the remainder of the half, three further short corners drawing excellent saves from the opposition keeper. Amid a flurry of cards against Winchester they continued to verbally contest umpiring decisions, the score remaining 2-0 at the break. Horsham increased their lead in the second half when John Burroughs found the net after another short corner before Matt Hough completed his hat trick with an open play goal. Then Cirdec Atkinson put the icing on the cake with Horsham’s fifth. Winchester scored a consolation goal from a set piece with the last hit of the match but this was unquestionably Horsham’s day, with no team in the league for them to fear if they keep playing to their full potential.

Cirdec Atkinson scored in Horsham's impressive win Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “That just shows what we can do! We’ve been threatening that sort of showing – the only difference this week was that we kept getting the ball in the net.” Captain Duncan Howarth added: “The best we’ve played for years!” While Matt Hough said: “A great performance. Everyone had a good game and it was fantastic to see us all really clicking together.” After thrashing Holcombe 7-1 last week, London Edwardians remain

top with Winchester (18 points) slipping to third behind Tulse Hill & Dulwich, now the only unbeaten team in the league. Horsham stay fourth on 17 points and tomorrow (Saturday December 5) visit tenth in the table Oxford Hawks. Horsham have maintained a settled side but the Oxford game will necessitate several changes because of unavailability, including knee surgery awaiting skipper Howarth and a serious looking hand injury likely to thwart player coach Dom Male.

Horsham win after disappointing performance Saturday November 28 - Intermediate Cup Round 2 Horsham 20 – 14 Andover Rugby Richard Ordidge – Horsham RUFC

Horsham took a step nearer Twickenham with their win

Horsham were not at their best but won

Horsham took one more step towards a possible final at Twickenham with a second round Intermediate Cup win at home to Andover. The Hampshire side, who like Horsham were promoted last season from the parallel London South West league, were spirited opposition. With a very young side, the majority of whom have recently progressed through their Mini and Junior section similarly to the Green and Whites, Andover certainly have a bright future. Unfortunately, the game did not live up to the expectations of the good sized crowd who were well fortified following a Vice President’s lunch. Horsham head coach Nick Stocker said, “It was a frustrating day at the office. We are pleased to get to the next round but the players did not achieve the standards they have set themselves.” Horsham started quickly and crossed the try line in the first minute. Following a poor clearance kick from Andover, Mike Watts went on a weaving run and set the ball up when tackled and from the next phase the ball was spun right to Andy Gray who powered through several tackles to score from 20 yards. Johnson added the conversion and when Andover were caught offside in front of their own posts after 7 minutes, Johnson slotted the penalty and the Green and Whites were already 10-0 up. Andover bounced back immediately when they stole possession from the back of the Horsham scrum and crossed the line

after a powerful run from their inside centre, then Mike Watts scored a superb try off first phase scrum possession gliding in and out, and with the try converted by Johnson, Horsham were leading 17-7 after 13 minutes. Despite having several more opportunities to score Horsham failed to add to their tally for the remainder of the half due to handling errors in the wet conditions and wrong options being taken. Sam Shepherd, Declan Nwachukwu and Watts looked a threat whenever in possession but there was a lack of continuity to Horsham’s play. Johnson kicked another penalty to extend the lead to 20-7 after 52 minutes but this was to be the last time that Horsham troubled the scoreboard. With neither side establishing any fluidity, the scoreline remained unchanged until - on 75 minutes Horsham failed to secure their own line out ball on their 22, and when a clearance kick was charged down, the defence was indecisive and Andover were the first to follow up and score. Stocker went on to say, “At least we secured a win when playing well below par. Richard Tredgett was my man of the match, Sam Shepherd had a good game on debut and Mike Watts always looked dangerous ball in hand.” Horsham’s next game is at home to Deal & Betteshanger on December 5. The Kent side lie fourth in the league and will undoubtedly provide tough opposition. Horsham Team: Watts; Nwachukwu, Yeates, Ordidge, Shepherd; Johnson, Mills (McCabe 60); Barber, Stone (Grantham-Hill 40), Talbot; Tredgett, Whiting; Smith (Harcus 26), Thompson, Gray.

Eastbourne Town end Joggers battle on at Dunsfold track Heath’s winning run Saturday November 28 - SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 1 – 2 Eastbourne Town Football Andrew Crisp – Football Reporter Broadbridge Heath’s four match winning run came to an end against the team it started with when Eastbourne Town visited the Leisure Centre on Saturday. It looked as if Heath would cause another shock result following their 4-2 victory earlier in the month but it wasn’t to be as a late strike from Eastbourne’s Aaron Capon in the 88th minute gave the visitors the victory that saw them move to within one point of leaders Horsham FC at the top of the table. It was an entertaining first half, with some good football played by both teams and both defenses looking rock solid. As a result, the chances were few and far between with only one notable shot on target from Eastbourne’s Jason Taylor which Michael Chester saved quite comfortably. Heath took the lead five minutes into the restart when Piers McDermott slipped the ball through to Ollie Moore who chipped a right foot shot that deflected off Eastbourne

keeper Greg Nessling into the goal. Wes Tate came close for Eastbourne three minutes later but his shot from a free kick went just over the crossbar and from another free-kick midway through the half Nathan Crabb hit a shot a yard wide of Chester’s righthand post. The visitor’s attacks were coming more frequently with Heath sitting back trying to keep what they had but on 74 minutes Daniel Bowell picked the ball up and ran at the Heath defence slipped past a couple of challenges and rifled in a left foot shot that nestled into the bottom left corner out of Chester’s reach bringing his team level. The visitor’s threw everything at Heath in search of that winning goal and were rewarded when Capon attacked down the right hand side cut inside and hit a beauty with his right that flew past Chester to earn his team an important victory in their search for a return to Ryman League football. Heath Manager Steve Painter was disappointed not to get anything from the game but was pleased that his team competed well against a very good Eastbourne Town side. Heath Team: M.Chester, Robinson, Ozga (Wicking 80), Howard, Flack, Chester, Moore McDermott 60, Sandell, Purkis (Holmes 75), Weller.

Depleted Heath overcome League Champions Tuesday December 1 - SCFA RUR Charity Cup Round 4 Littlehampton Town 0 – 2 Broadbridge Heath Football Andrew Crisp – Football Reporter Midweek away games have become a real burden for Heath Manager Steve Painter this season and this was no exception. With eight of his regular first team players unavailable for the game, it was always going to be difficult. To come away with victory against the current League Champions was a fantastic achievement by his players who were applauded off the field by the travelling Heath supporters after the game. As you would expect from a team who have won nine of their last ten matches, the home-side created a number of openings in the first period but for once the finishing of their prolific strikers George Gaskin and George Landais was lacking,

with both wasting good opportunities by blasting them high or wide of goal and a couple that were on target went straight into the arms of Heath keeper Michael Chester. Heath may not have had the same number of chances as their hosts but when they did the home-side were grateful for the alertness of their own keeper Jon Hendrick who saved a header from Jake Legrange, came off his line quickly to smother a shot from Kieron Purkis and then denied Legrange again when the striker thought he was through. However, the keeper was helpless in first half injury time when Legrange rifled a shot at goal from 25 yards that crashed against the underside of the crossbar and out to safety. The combination of Gaskin and Landais were again in action at the start of the 2nd period with the latter’s effort comfortably saved by Chester but the game changed midway through the half when a long Heath free-kick was played into the penalty area where Jake Holmes

was wrestled to the ground by a defender and the referee had an easy decision to award Heath a penalty kick and a second booking for the defender immediately followed by a red card meant his team were reduced to 10 men. Ollie Moore coolly slotted from the spot to give The Bears the lead. Heath never looked in danger with the extra man and almost added a second when Stuart Chester burst into the penalty area but again Hendrick was out like lightning to block the shot. With five minutes remaining, Legrange broke away down the left flank and picked out Moore arriving late on the edge of the box and the Heath midfield player hammered a right foot shot past Hendrick to complete an unexpected 2-0 win to take Broadbridge Heath to their 3rd RUR Cup semifinal in 4 years. Team: M.Chester, Robinson (Ozga 55), Wicking, Attwater, Flack, Chester, Moore Wragg (Clark 88), Purkis (D Robinson), Holmes, Legrange.

League winner’s trophy Changing of the guard at Horsham CC for improving Horsham Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter

Horsham tennis ladies league winners Mars Schellevis and Lorraine Burlinson

Tennis Dave Smith – Sports Editor At the recent Tennis Sussex Awards, held at the Amex Stadium, Horsham players Mars Schellevis and Lorraine Burlinson received their Women’s Tennis Sussex Summer Doubles League 4 winner’s trophy. The Ladies team at Horsham have shown continued improvement over the last few seasons, having finished runners-up in the Summer League Division 6 in 2014, they were promoted two leagues and played in division 4 this summer, and took the title of league winners. Horsham Ladies Captain, Tessa Walder, said: “from a small core of seven match players we have built a brilliant team spirit, and winning the league title this year has been well deserved. My job would be so much harder without their enthusiasm, thanks to all the team, Gail Burlinson, Linda Lewis, Donna Copeland,

Veronika Lang, Mars Schellevis and Lorraine Burlinson” Playing in a league of seven, against other clubs from across the county, Horsham finished the season with four wins, one draw and one loss, enough to win the league by two clear points. Tessa Walder, added “we are really enjoying our tennis at the moment and that is reflected in our results, currently we’re playing our winter league matches and so far have two wins from two. Next summer we shall be competing in the Sussex Leagues and in the Aegon Team Tennis Sussex competition. I’m also really excited as we have some junior players coming up that I’m sure will be vying for a place in the team very soon. We would love to be able to enter a second team into the leagues, so are always on the lookout for ladies who want to play some competitive tennis.” For more details please see the club website www.horshamsportsclub.com

An unprecedented number of changes in senior officials were voted in at Horsham CC’s AGM, the club fortunately having exceptional candidates to replace former incumbents. Colin Mitcham continues as Hon Treasurer and Ed Clark as Cricket Manager but but the holders of all other major posts have changed. After 54 years at the club as an outstanding player and administrator, President Hugh Thomas stands down because of ill health, wih Barry Peay stepping up. Richard Marshall takes over from Barry as Ground Manager and becomes Chairman following the resignation of respected ex-wicketkeeper batsman John Carter. After 22 years on the committee, John said: “It has been a great honour but now is the right time for someone else to inject fresh ideas.” Richard Marshall’s father had set up the colts training programme with former long term President John Dew before Richard became very successful club captain. His son Luke also became skipper, piloting Horsham to national Cockspur Cup victory at Lord’s in 2005. Kate Huddlestone is the new Secretary following the untimely death of Karen Marshall, while Clive Noblett becomes Fixtures Secretary, a role previously filled for 40 years by Hugh Thomas. Additionally, James Johnson takes over from Sam Attfield as 1st XI Captain. Playing down his enormous contribution, Hugh Thomas said: “This

Horsham Cricket Club has many changes at the top is a great club and that is the important thing – it is not so much about the individuals.” He also paid tribute to his successor, Barry Peay reminding members that apart from being an outstanding player, much respected senior umpire and serial Festival organiser, Barry has just been recognised by Sussex with a life time achievement award. Barry, who recently returned from playing in tests for England Over 70s in Australia, responded saying that as a student he first met newly installed Life Patron Hugh at Collyers when the outgoing President

was teaching there, saying: “Hugh has been a wonderful steadying hand at the tiller of the club for so many years and we are all greatly indebted to him.” Other Horsham CC news – Jamie Morgan, formerly at Roffey CC is the new groundsman, Michael Munday won the league bowling award for the fourth consecutive year, Will Beer has signed a new two year contract with Sussex and George Garton has been added to the England U19 squad. Meanwhile, the fireworks event was a huge success, raising some £19, 000.

YM hit for six at Eastbourne Tuesday December 1 - SCFL Premier Division Eastbourne Town 6 – 2 Horsham YMCA Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter Horsham YMCA missed the chance to go top of the Southern Combination League Premier Division on Tuesday evening as they were beaten 6-2 away at Eastbourne Town. Three hosts’ goals inside the opening 22 minutes ended YM’s hopes of reaching the league summit, as Town put the fixture beyond all doubt during a first half to forget for visitors’ goalkeeper Simon Lockwood. James Taylor fired the home side ahead after just four minutes, before a woeful Lockwood free kick found Aaron Capon 25 yards from goal and the youngster rounded the ‘keeper and tapped in six minutes later. Taylor doubled his tally midway through the half when Lockwood could only block a Capon shot into the path of the midfielder, who slotted into an empty net. Dave Brown reduced the deficit just after the half hour mark with a

curled effort from 20 yards, but Town captain Kenny Pogue made it 4-1 just before the break when another Lockwood error in the box allowed the striker to slam home. The hosts’ front man then completed his hatrick in the second half, netting either side of a consolatory Anthony Hibbert header. YM manager Peter Buckland commented: “It was very, very disappointing. I have just said to the players that we all enjoy the good days, but we’ve all got to man up now on a bad day. “We just seemed a yard slower than them. We didn’t win any seconds, we were stretched all over the pitch and no one kept their shape. “I don’t think it would have mattered who we were playing tonight, we would have been beaten playing like that. It was a big game and a big occasion, but all that’s been lost is three points. There are no medals handed out at the end of November. What it’s about now, is how we react Saturday.” YM (4-5-1): Lockwood (Fox 46), D. YM`s No.6 Anthony Hibbert scoring Horsham Sparrows Under 12 – Sparrows kept a clean sheet due to some good, organised defending and yet another penalty save by Kane. Ollie gave Sparrows the lead midway through the first half and Arthur added a second with virtually the last kick of the game. Man of the Match: George. Under 15 – A close game played at The Needles saw players from both Horsham Sparrows and Greenway start the match by observing a minute silence in memory of Mick Browning. The first half finished goalless with Greenway taking the lead in second half. Thanks to some great saves from both keepers this was the only goal to separate sides with Greenway taking the plaudits and a deserved 3 points. Man of the match for Sparrows was Paul G.

Horsham Ambassadors U12 3 - 6 Chesworth Rovers U12 The cold weather was back this weekend as Chesworth travelled the short distance to Horsham Ambassadors for a league match that would see Chesworth stay top of the A league. Chesworth started the scoring with Finlay hitting the mark twice for the Claret and blue. Josh then scored an audacious back flick over the keeper for 0 – 3. Ambassadors were not going to lie down for a beating and pulled 3 goals before Tom made it 3 – 4. Fletch and Seb then finished the game off for Chesworth hitting a strike each for a 3 – 6 score line. Game 2 was 1 – 7 to the Chesworth Rovers with Josh scoring 2 more, Ben L scoring 2, Fletch also scoring 2 and Nyle rounded the match off.

Saturday November 28 - SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 5 – 3 AFC Uckfield Town Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter Horsham YMCA moved up to third spot in what is now a tightly packed Premier Division top six, following a 5-3 win over AFC Uckfield Town on an emotional day at Gorings Mead on Saturday. Players from both sides wore black armbands and observed a minute’s silence in commemoration of YM Chairman, Mick Browning, who sadly passed away last week following a lengthy battle with leukaemia. Alex Gathern’s fourth-minute header handed the hosts the per-

fect start, but the visitors levelled when Scott Taylor struck low into the net midway through the first half. Buckland introduced Martin Smith at the interval and the dual-signed Dorking man proved the difference between the sides as he played a hand in three YM goals in ten second half minutes. Smith’s cross from the right first teed up defender Dan Pollard, who sweetly struck into the corner from the edge of the area, before the forward raced through and coolly slotted home three minutes later. Dangerous Uckfield midfielder Taylor halved the deficit shortly after, but the influential Smith helped reinstate the home side’s two goal advantage less than ninety seconds later when another cross from the right found Dave Brown who rifled into the corner. Buckland’s side added a fifth

five minutes from time when Anthony Hibbert headed in a Dan Sullivan cross, before the YM midfielder found himself on the Uckfield score sheet two minutes later when a corner bounced off his shin and into his own net from four yards. YM manager Peter Buckland commented: “I really wanted to win for obvious reasons. Football doesn’t actually pale into insignificance today, because Mick was all about football. I was even more animated than usual because of the tension and all of the emotions building up, so I was relieved when the final whistle went and we got the three points.” YM: Fox, D. Sullivan, Gathern, Pollard, Horner (Smith 46), Hibbert, Gedling, Evans, Gannon (Lockwood 82), Brown, Wright (Hyett 75). Unused subs: Carden, Burgess.
