Arrests made in drugs blitz phil dennett News Editor

Police raids are hitting illegal drug suppliers in Horsham area. Sussex Police have executed search warrants in and around Horsham as part of what they call a determined drive against dealers. One of those arrested was only 17. On Wednesday of last week officers raided properties in Cook Road, Horsham, and Heath Close, Broadbridge Heath. Two 19-year-old men were arrested; one, from Croydon, on suspicion of money laundering and the other, from Crawley, already wanted on a warrant. The raids followed execution of misuse of drugs act warrants on November 26 at properties in Crawley Road, Forest Road and Honeysuckle Walk, Horsham. Police reported that at Forest Road and at Crawley Road quantities of drugs were seized, together with a pepper spray. Three people were arrested; a 26-year-old woman, a 39-yearold man and a 17-year-old boy,

all from Horsham. They were detained on suspicion of possession of cannabis and cocaine, possession of a weapon which discharges a noxious liquid/gas/electricity and money laundering. All three were bailed until February 5, while enquiries continue. No arrests were made at Honeysuckle Walk. Inspector Clare McKnight, of Horsham's Neighbourhood Policing Team, (pictured) said: "We will continue to use all available methods to disrupt and deter illegal drugs activity in this district. "The cost of drugs misuse to individuals and to the community as a whole cannot be underestimated." Inspector McKnight added: “We are determined to ensure that Horsham becomes a hostile environment for drug dealers and would encourage anyone with information about offenders or suspicious activity to come forward." They can do so by emailing 101@ sussex.pnn.police.uk or phoning 101, quoting Operation Bullhead. Alternatively they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers without having to leave their name on 0800 555 111. (www.crimestoppers-uk.org)

Most youngsters in danger of being homeless in West Sussex find friends or relations to stay with after being given safe accommodation while they sort out their lives. Over the last four years more than 1200 young people in West Sussex have been prevented from being homeless by the work of the Youth Homelessness Prevention Team From May 2011 to March 2015 a total of 1227 young people sought help for homelessness in West Sussex. The council says that of that number, only 138 are still being actively supported by the team, with the majority returning home after receiving assistance. Other individuals have moved in with extended family or family friends, while some have come into care. Around 17%, though, have been guided into supported accommoda-

tion or private tenancies. Clive Mills, team manager, said: “Our focus is to work with the family to see if the relationships can be rebuilt and if the family can be kept together. Supported accommodation is provided for those who cannot go home to ensure they have a safe environment. The aim is to always do what is the best for the young person.” The initiative started in 2008 when Crawley Borough Council and Social Services pooled provided two permanent living locations for homeless youths, with a social worker used to assess their safeguarding concerns. The scheme went nationwide in 2011. One young man said: “It takes a bit of time to settle in, as it does in any place, but I can’t fault it. If you need the staff for anything they do all they can.”

Talented jeweller Melanie Moore will be leading sheep over London Bridge after accepting a top honour for her skill Melanie, from Slinfold, runs Melanie Paul goldsmiths and enamellers in Storrington, and in 2014 was granted the Freedom of Goldsmiths Hall London. She has now received her “Freedom of the City” after a swearing-in ceremony in the Guildhall in Gresham Street, London and hopes to takes part in a ceremony next year where she fulfils her right, with others, to lead sheep over the bridge. Melanie, 36, who lives with husband Simon, told the District Post: “I am pretty sure I will be doing it. Just for the novelty value. It’s not an opportunity that comes up very of-

ten in life, is it? But I am a bit short of sheep to be honest.” Melanie is the newest person to receive the ancient honour. The title has also been given to stars such as Colin Firth and Morgan Freeman and notable people such as Florence Nightingale, Princess Diana and Lord Nelson. Melanie can walk her sheep across London Bridge on certain days, provided they are of the upmost quality, to be traded within the square mile of the City of London a rule which has existed since the 13th century. Melanie, the daughter of James and Fay Moore, undertakes bespoke commissions, remodelling and jewellery repairs.

Students remember talented Tony Crucial 30th anniversary New Year for hospice Students entered a competition in memory of a former pupil who insisted “Don’t Be Boring” as he captured quirky images of English life. Talented Tony Ray-Jones had a self-imposed rule of “Don’t Take Boring Pictures” and his old school named a competition after him. Each year the Art Department at Christ’s Hospital offers pupils the opportunity to enter its annual photographic competition named in memory of Tony, who became a respected photographer after leaving the school but died in his early 30s. Documenting ordinary English life, his images were a startling departure from anything else being produced at the time. After leaving Horsham he later used photographs taken from a taxi window in North Africa to earn a scholarship to Yale University. This year’s Tony Ray-Jones Photography Competition had more 160 entries on the theme of ‘Teenage’, inspired by the work of guest judge,

opes of a new hospice for Horsham, Crawley, and Mid Sussex hinge on a crucial decision by district councillors that will taken on the 30th anniversary of the original hospice opening. If new houses are not approved the hospice scheme will not go ahead, though planners have not yet prepared a report on its merits. Planning officers are studying the scheme submitted for St Catherine’s Hospice and Thakeham Homes developers for land at Pease Pottage. They will later make a recommendation for councillors to make a decision in the New Year on the project for a new hospice, 600 homes and other facilities. The Duchess of Kent opened the current hospice in Malthouse Road, Crawley, in 1986. The scheme that will replace the current facilities is being considered by Mid Sussex District Council, whose planning control area includes the plot of land offered by scrap yard owner Bill Bridges for the hospice, as well as the land for housing, which he also owns. Responding to an inquiry from the Post a spokesman for the hospice told the Post: “We have been

gifted the land but, without planning permission, it won’t be worth very much to us, both in terms of expansion possibilities and monetary value. As the planning application has been submitted by Thakeham Homes and Bill Bridges, with St Catherine’s named as a beneficiary, there wouldn’t be a new hospice without approval for the homes.” With Mid Sussex Council under pressure to find more space for housing and Crawley unable to find more it would appear the application has a good chance of success, especially as a new hospice would be popular with the public. Supporting its case Thakeham says that after updated evidence, Mid Sussex District Council has identified that the “Objectively Assessed Need” for housing in Mid Sussex has increased and a higher amount of housing of at least 800 homes a year should be delivered across the Mid Sussex district. The Pease Pottage site has now been proposed for allocation as a strategic housing site in the emerging Mid Sussex District Plan to provide 600 new homes, and the crucial factor will be whether planning officers and district councillors at Haywards Heath accept that allocation.

Young jailbirds surrender at Carfax after Jail Break fun Jail breakers gave themselves up in the centre of Horsham. The team of youngsters had been on a fundraising ‘Jail Break’ in a wide area covering the coast and inland as far as Burgess Hill and Storrington. Dressed in fancy costumes the pupils from Steyning Grammar School Sixth Form broke out at 8.15am from the school and headed for various points including Brighton, Hove, Shoreham, Southwick, Crawley, Lancing, Storrington, Portslade, Henfield, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath and Horsham. After their escapades they all gathered at the Horsham Bandstand to be recaptured at 1pm, watched by curious shoppers and other passers-by. Sixth Form College musicians played as the students were rounded up by their jailors. The great escape from Steyning Grammar School saw 213 Year 13 students released for a day of fundraising, with the money raised this year going to Cancer Research UK in support of their national campaign for Kids and Teens. They raised about £5,000 and donations may still be made at Just Giving site www.justgiving.com/SGS1/ Pictured are some of the scenes from the jailbreak.

Teens take to the saddle to help charity Four Horsham youngsters hit the saddle to help a group that saves lives. Twins Chloe and Lucy Bleach, Megan Parkes and Ellie Doughton, all 14, use their passion for cycling to raise money for charity. In 2014 the girls, who all attend Millais School, raised just over £600 for the QEII School in Horsham, supporting children with special needs. This year the girls said they wanted to “go bigger” and raise more.

Inspired by the voluntary work the twins’ dad Scot Grant does with ALSAR Search Dogs Sussex and their love of dogs, this year their charity choice was easy, especially after seeing the team be awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service, the equivalent of an MBE for volunteers, as previously reported in the District Post. The girls planned a 40-mile route from Horsham to Mannings Heath, Slaugham. Handcross Wings Museum, Balcombe,

Ardingly, West Hoathly, Sharpthorne and arrive at the half way point at The Bluebell Railway. In total the girls rode 41.4 miles in 7 Hours 55 Minutes and raised £701.30. The group wants to use the money raised to buy two new digital handheld radios, which will enable to the ALSAR team to have better communications when carrying out the vital work it does. The girls attended Edes House in Chichester to present the money to the ALSAR team which was also collecting its Queens Award for Voluntary Service from the Lord Lieutenant for West Sussex Susan Pyper. Some of the riders are pictured presenting the cheque to the chairman of ALSAR Search Dogs Sussex Steve Ball and Mrs Pyper.

Driving under the influence arrests made Dozens of drivers under the influence of drugs or drink are being caught by police in Operation Dragonfly. Some of them arrested include drivers from the Horsham and Crawley. Already some drivers face prosecution after being stopped by Sussex and Surrey police officers and one man from Hungary has become the first to be convicted. Up to Wednesday a total of 45 drivers had been arrested in Sussex since the campaign, run jointly by Surrey and Sussex Police, was launched on Tuesday of last week. Of these, 22 have been charged and bailed to appear at court. The campaign is being with the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, Drive Smart in Surrey and the independent charity Crimestoppers. 133 people were charged with drink or drug-driving in Sussex during last Christmas’s campaign.

Teams are responding to tip-offs from members of the public who see someone they know has been drinking getting into a car to drive. Stop checks are set up across Sussex and Surrey, in particular at locations where there is intelligence that there has been a history of drink or drugdriving. Officers are also tweeting about people stopped on suspicion of drink or drug-driving offences throughout the month, giving brief details such as when and where the motorists were pulled over. Chief Inspector Andy Gooch said: “Officers will be out looking for anyone who has got behind the wheel or got on a motorcycle after drinking or taking drugs. “We will not tolerate drink or drugdriving and would urge anyone who thinks they know someone who is driving over the limit or driving after

taking drugs, to contact us urgently so that we can act.” In a survey conducted last year by Brake and Direct Line, three per cent of UK motorists - the equivalent of a million drivers across the country - admitted driving while on illegal drugs in the previous 12 months. People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug driving or visitwww.operationcrackdown.co.uk. The successful biathlon team Issy Hayes and Amelia Wright have qualified for the GB Biathlon Finals. After competing in eight events over the course of April to September, Gaby Eltham won the South East region championship for girls aged 15-16 years old in her first season competing in Triathlons. Anna Wilson won her competition at the White Rose 2015 diving competition, achieving two 9.5 scores from the judges. This follows her success at the ASA National Finals (Diving) in Manchester where she became the best 12-year-old skills female diver in the country. Other recent successes included Honesty South winning her age group in the regional gymnastics competition at level 3, making her Regional and Sussex champion. Katie Bedwin and her horse, Layla, came 3rd

in a 2-day, 100-mile endurance race across the Black Mountains in Wales and was the youngest competitor by 20 years. Issy Hayes came 3rd at the world’s largest children's triathlon at Hever Castle and won the Crowborough Triathlon. Amelia Wright, Gaby Eltham and Issy Hayes represented the South East of England in the Triathlon England meet. Issy came 2nd, Amelia 4th and Gaby 4th in their respective age categories. Rania Hyde has been invited to take part in the winter development Sussex Track and Field Squad 201516. Fencer Eleanor Harvie trained in Hungary with other top international fencers. In the women’s épée competition, she was knocked out by the eventual winner, finishing 17th.

Horsham-educated Matt Charman raised nearly £1,000 for Horsham Museum with a question and answer session after a showing of Bridge of Spies, for which he wrote the film script, at the town’s Capitol. Former District Post and Johnston Press journalist Ben Morris, from Ashington, a former school pal of Matt and editor of AAH, compered the session. Horsham museum submitted the following report on the evening. “There may have been no red carpet, but there was the baby-sitter, the man who printed the earliest posters for plays, as well as family and friends from across the region to celebrate and acknowledge the work of Matt Charman, scriptwriter for the outstanding Steven Spielberg film Bridge of Spies. The event organised by Horsham Museum also raised nearly £1,000 to help preserve the museum’s outstanding poster collection. What made the evening so special was not only the Q&A session Matt gave at the end of the film, but the genuine sense that this was an event that friends and family could enjoy. Even Toovey’s, who kindly supported the evening by supplying the champagne, has a ‘Charman’ working amongst the staff… the beard gave it away when mentioned, an in-family joke that was commented on at the reception! Ben Morris, of AAH, undertook the compère duties because he went to Forest Boys School with Matt

Our present to you

and this led to a very relaxed atmosphere. Some who had followed Matt’s career from the Capitol theatre where his plays were first performed, through to the West End and TV shows, actively asked questions. Matt thought they were going to be easy, but they actually wanted to know the real processes he experienced, and his innermost thoughts at various points. Matt’s answers highlighted the fun, the pathos and real meaning of the film, which is based on a true, but forgotten story. In fact when in New York, Matt actually saw the film with the real children of the character Donovan, (played by Tom Hanks). He sensed he had an obligation to tell the story correctly and truthfully and wanted them to feel proud of the film too. It was an evening the likes of which Horsham may never see again; though with all the projects Matt is now involved with, we can never say never again, but this was the first, and one that Matt really enjoyed. Horsham may be a bustling town of over 45,000, but on the night it was like a glorious warm-hearted film of the 1930s, with Matt Charman being the James Stewart character! As for the film and Matt’s work: Matt’s name coming second after Steven Spielberg in the credits shows his importance to the story and popular cultural event of 2015. The evening was made possible by collaboration between Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and the Capitol.”

Rush for fire service jobs A fun way of sending a serious message

Fire chiefs say response to a recruiting drive has been phenomenal. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service says a maximum of 700 hopefuls quickly inquired into full-time vacancies for community fire-fighters. The online process, open to West Sussex residents only and limited to the first 700 candidates to register, began at 9am on Monday and within 12 hours applications were full. They will have now have until December 18 to complete and submit their application forms. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service area manager for support and development Neil Stocker said: “We anticipated a high level of interest in the role but the response has been absolutely phenomenal. We would like to thank all those who have registered their interest. It’s fantastic that so many people want to join the Service and help make a positive difference to communities in West Sussex. “Of course, we are now looking for

the very best candidates to progress so the recruitment process will be extremely robust and challenging but we are confident that people in West Sussex have the skills, commitment and talent to meet that challenge.” Those who make it through the first stage will then have written tests, fitness tests, physical tests, a formal interview and a medical. The successful applicants, who will begin their training next year, will become the first new whole time recruits to join the service in West Sussex for more than 8 years. The role of the fire service has changed considerably in recent years and fire-fighters now have a much broader preventative role to play within their community, working alongside partner organisations to prevent emergencies from happening. Pupils received some serious interactive advice laced with humour on how to stay safe on the roads. Education in Performance visited The Weald School, Billingshurst, to address new Year 7 students through the group’s interactive performance ‘Streetwise’. The performance provides young people who are starting to use the roads independently with a safe space to explore the risk, responsibility and consequences as a pedestrian. Experts say this enables them to make informed decisions, manage their personal safety and understand how their behaviour affects those around them. It does so by raising awareness of the risks when using the road system as a pedestrian, especially when on ‘automatic pilot’ travelling a route they often take, for example to

school. Tom Brixey, assistant headteacher at The Weald School, said: “This performance is part of a much wider personal development programme that aims to empower students to make informed decisions about their own safety and welfare which is something we strongly encourage here at The Weald.”

Protect your digital legacy with The Soldier’s Box

Three British technology entrepreneurs launch the solution to a problem that now affects us all. What happens to our digital world when we die? The answer lies over a hundred years ago in the trenches of WWI. Soldiers on the frontline kept

their most treasured possessions; personal photos, private letters and important documents in one small box or the tin, given as a Christmas gift by Princess Mary. In the event the soldier lost his life, this box would be passed to his loved ones. His family would receive the items

within, just as he would have wanted them to be seen. This box was nick named ‘The Soldier’s Box’. Founder, Darren Richmond, an IT professional from Horsham, West Sussex, heard this story on the radio and decided to bring the concept of The Soldier’s Box into the 21st

century. The idea is simple: Organise and store most treasured digital possessions; photos, videos, documents, contracts and messages, in one secure, convenient online place. In the event of one's death, loved ones will have easy access to everything he or she wishes them to keep. In essence, a virtual WWI Soldier’s Box. Darren shared the idea with two life long friends, both with years of experience in the technology industry, Lee Rendell and Greg Roffe. Together they designed and developed the new digital version of The Soldier’s Box. “In the last few years, we have radically changed the way we record memories and manage our lives." said Darren, "The Soldier’s Box provides an easy way to ensure our digital legacy lives on and our memories are not lost.” The Soldier’s Box was created by the team with the desire to bring comfort to bereaved families and support with the practicalities of losing a loved one. Anything can be stored in The Soldier’s box: Personal items, including a list of personal messages, video clips or treasured photographs with special friends; Practical necessities, including personal finances, household instructions or birthday lists to help those left behind with everyday tasks. The box is not intended as a replacement for an online back-up

provider. It is designed as a tool to securely organise everything in someone’s life that is important. It is completely protected by using exactly the same security methods deployed by the worlds leading financial institutions. The team describe it as an online safe with the added benefit of having a unique secure mechanism to easily be passed on to loved ones. The Soldiers’ Box can be added to a Will, but does not replace one. An assigned trustee receives a unique initiation code, to start the data inheritance process of the box. It is recommended that everyone has a will to legally record their final wishes. New book on Horsham’s war heroes Trainee Will takes on world after national title launched with author signing

The man whose diligent work brought recognition to Horsham’s overlooked war heroes will be signing his new book in Horsham this weekend. Garry Cooper, author of Horsham’s Heroes of World War II 1939-1945,

will be at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery in the Causeway between 10.30am and 1pm on Saturday. It was Mr Cooper’s work for the book that found many names that had not been put on Horsham’s war memorial. A ceremony was held a few weeks ago to honour the soldiers, sailors, and air crew whose names have now been placed at the Carfax memorial. The book contains fascinating and moving stories, real life dramas and interesting photographs from World War Two. Garry Cooper has donated £5 from the sale of each copy sold to the Museum, to help preserve Horsham’s Horsham Museum has described the book as “the magnificent achievement of a dedicated local and military historian.” It has a limited print run of 300 copies and Saturday’s book signing comes the day after it went on sale. In a ceremony in November 43 names were put on Horsham’s war memorial. Behind the names were stories of bravery and tragedy, and over the course of many years Mr Cooper shed the light on the role played by local people in the often savage conflict. Pictured are Herbert Turk and Harry Jones, who both feature in the £35 hardback book.

A young trainee is taking on the world after capturing a national title for his skill and endeavour. Will Burberry, 19, who works for Gardenscapes landscape gardening firm, is now preparing for the WorldSkills contest in Abu Dhabi in 2017. He won his national award at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. Will was declared as 'Best in the UK' in landscape gardening after winning gold at the Association of Professional Landscapers World Skills UK Skills Competition final. Showcasing his ability, Will had to build a garden by himself, pre-designed by the head judge, in 16 hours over four days at the show which BBC Breakfast filmed live from. Will and four other finalists were marked on elements including block paving, recessed drain covers, wood work, planting and overall appearance. Now Will goes forward as part of the UK Squad of about 150, which numbers around 150, made up from trades from carpentry and car body

repairs to floristry and jewellery making to compete against the world’s best in WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017. Will, who started with Gardenscapes as an apprentice three years ago, said: "Words can’t describe how I’m feeling. I’m completely overwhelmed by it all. It was a really good competition this year as everyone was really equal in standards. I’m really pleased to have qualified for the chance to go to Abu Dhabi in 2017; I didn’t think I would at all." Business partners Ainsley Courten and Neal Markwick of Gardenscapes, which is based at Billingshurst and Horley and has been transforming the gardens of Surrey and West Sussex since 1999, said: “We’re so proud of Will, to have him start as an apprentice and work to this standard, to have him represent us as a company, is more than we imagined when we took him on for a week’s work experience from school.”To get to the final, Will competed in knock out stages, then semi-finals at RHS Tatton Park Flower show in July.

Concern about tree killer Tony tries tallest tree for size

The spread of the Ash Die Back tree killer is concerning conservation volunteers. The Storrington Conservation Group says in its latest news note: “A real concern is Ash Die Back, which is now within the parish. It has spread from continental Europe then from Kent right across East and West Sussex in the last two years. It is caused by a fungus. This could be as greater threat to our native trees as Dutch Elm disease was in the 1980s. Information about it can be found at Forestry Commission Website. Sighting can be reported on their Tree Alert. See www.forestry.gov.uk/ashdieback.” Ash dieback, also known as Chalara, is a disease of ash trees caused by a fungus. Chalara causes leaf loss, crown dieback and bark lesions in affected trees. Once a tree is infected the disease is usually fatal, either di-

rectly, or indirectly by weakening the tree to the point where it succumbs more readily to attacks by other pests or pathogens, especially Armillaria fungi, or honey fungus. The first signs of Chalara in Britain were found in a nursery in Buckinghamshire in February 2012. As well as regular work parties on the first Saturdays of each month, the group is seeing if afternoon work parties on the third Thursday of each month at Fryern Dell prove to be a good idea. It said: “The hope being to make quicker progress. We had five people at the first one in November and achieved some good work. The next one is on January 21 meeting by the stone bench on at 2.00pm.” The next Saturday work party is January 2 at Fryern Dell, starting at 10am, and for those who wish, to continue into the afternoon.

No stranger to being up in the air having bungee jumped recently from 440 feet, Wakehurst Gardens’ new director, Tony Sweeney, has never been this far up a tree before. The Giant Redwood tree at Wakehurst, near Ardingly, is the UK’s tallest living Christmas tree and has been lit for the past 23 years to celebrate the festive season. It takes a team of Wakehurst aboriculturalists, suspended from ropes and two cherry pickers from dawn until dusk to put up over 1,800 LED bulbs. Since Tony’s lofty visit the tree has been being decorated and tested for its switch-on to mark the start of Wakehurst’s annual ticketed Glow Wild Lantern Festival and it will then stay on over Christmas until Twelth Night. Tony Sweeney said the latest measure height of the tree was the 36.60 metres about 120 feet. He said: ““I’m delighted to be here at Wakehurst right near the top of up such a magnificent tree. The new height shows the tree has great vitality and that it will continue to grow at an impressive rate for many more years to come. I’m looking forward to growing Wakehurst alongside it.” From December 4 to mark the start of Wakehurst’s annual ticketed Glow Wild Lantern Festival, the lights will be turned on from 6am-8am and 3.30pm – 12midnight every afternoon and will then stay on over Christmas until the twelfth night. Each year the tree provides a beacon for planes coming into Gatwick Airport.

New Post Office opens Sir Tim Rice visits Christ’s Hospital Residents in the Caterways area of Horsham have their first Post Office after a baroness gave it the official stamp of approval. Parliamentary Under Secretary of State and Minister for Intellectual Property Baroness Neville-Rolfe cut the ribbon at an opening ceremony. It is the Post Office’s 5000th modern branch to be opened in its biggest investment programme, totalling £2billion, and will be run by R a m e s h Shingadia and his family, who run the Londis store in Southwater. Last year they took on Southwater Post Office to safeguard the community service, and this year they opened a Londis store in The Parade, Caterways and later agreed to also run a new Post Office there, where son Amish is the manager. Mr Shingadia said: “I am delighted to open a Post Office at my Caterways store. It is a marriage made in heaven having a Post Office and convenience store combined. My existing customers and the whole

community were thrilled to hear the news they were getting a Post Office. It will make their lives much easier having a Post Office which is open seven days a week from early until late, with lots of free parking. The new branch removes the need for customers to travel into town to do most of their Post Office transactions.” The Governmentfunded initiative is to modernise up to 8,000 agency branches, to support rural community branches and to maintain a UK network of 11,500 Post Offices. With two new housing developments nearby The Post Office says it identified an opportunity to expand its branch network. Baroness Neville-Rolfe said: “The Government is helping the Post Office to modernise its network, bringing about benefits for customers and postmasters while securing its future. We have invested nearly £2 billion to sustain and transform the network and I am pleased to open this branch, particularly to celebrate reaching the 5,000 modernised post offices milestone.”

Christ’s Hospital Theatre was the unlikely venue for a visit from a legend of British song writing, Sir Tim Rice. Sir Tim, who along with Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, has written hit musicals, including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Evita, came to speak to pupils at the School on the surprising topic of ‘The Importance of Failure’. The triple-Oscar-winning lyricist gave the audience a fascinating, self-deprecatory, and humorous account of his career and of how the pathway to success is anything but a smooth one. During his talk, CH pupils sung some of his favourite songs live, including ‘I Don’t Know How To Love Him’, sung by Charlotte Willcock, ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina’, by Mattie Slade, and ‘Another Suitcase in Another Hall’, by 13 year-old Phoebe Weir. Phoebe said: “I was privileged enough to perform during the talk. I was super nervous because on top of singing to all the senior pupils, I was singing to the man who wrote the song I was performing. After the talk which was so interesting and funny, I was introduced to Sir Tim Rice, which was so incredibly amazing because I'm such a huge fan of his work and to meet him and have him compliment my singing was a dream come true.” Sixth Former Georgia Koronka, a member of the senior choir, said:

“I was apprehensive when he introduced my song, ‘Any Dream Will Do’ as his favourite from ‘Joseph and the Techni-coloured Dream-coat’ - it's a very famous, lovely moment in the production. I was lucky to have my song made complete by backing vocals from fellow pupil, Joseph Bryant.” Sir Tim stayed on afterwards to answer individual questions, sign autographs, and pose for the inevitable selfies. He may well have heard stories about the School from his father, Hugh Rice, who was educated at Christ’s Hospital

Oaklands Park

in the 1920s. Overall, it was a wonderful and unforgettable evening and the members of the audience went away with both the glow from a great night of musical entertainment and food for thought from what had been said. This was the final lecture in an inspirational season of visiting speakers for the CH pupils, with topics including ‘The View from No. 11’ by Lord Lawson; Caroline Criado-Perez ‘Why Feminism Matters’; Dr Lars Kjaer’s History lecture ‘Why the Middle Ages matter’ and Erwin Jones ‘A Life Inside’.

Band shines in the rain Has your garden felt the chill? How at the Lord Mayor’s Show to prepare your lawn post-Christmas Photo by Helene Carter

The Christ’s Hospital Band gave a tremendous performance at the Lord Mayor’s Show, London’s most colourful and spectacular parade. The show is always one of the most prestigious engagements in the school’s calendar. This year, the day marked the show’s 800th anniversary, attracting more than half a million spectators and 7000 participants from around the world. The 120 young instrumentalists from Christ’s Hospital played magnificently as they marched three miles in the pouring rain between Bank and Aldwych. Band Captain Max Thomas, aged 17, said: “I am very proud of everyone for their efforts and resilience throughout the day. Marching in the pouring rain wasn’t easy. The Lord Mayor's Show is a highlight of the band's year, and the packed crowds on the London streets always make it worthwhile. I couldn't be prouder of all of us,

and I won't forget this for a long time to come.” The Christ’s Hospital Band was first invited to be part of this famous procession in 1981 and so impressed the Lord Mayor that it has been invited to participate ever since. At least four Old Blues (former pupils) have served as Lord Mayor of the City of London. The show marked the first day of office for the new Lord Mayor, Lord Mountevans who is also a member of CH’s Council of Almoners (Trustee) and a strong supporter of the School. The history of Christ’s Hospital and its important links with the City are included a book published to celebrate the Lord Mayor’s Show ‘800 Years 1215-2015’.The book provides a portrait of the show across all periods and from a variety of perspectives and some of its fascinating themes, presenting a kaleidoscopic vision of one of the nation’s best loved annual events.

Time to enjoy older age

guy deakins Gardening

Now that Christmastide is almost over, you are no doubt looking out of your window at the forlorn lawn that adorns your garden and thinking of all things Easter. Should you patch it, feed it, dig it up and re-turf or simply replace it with plastic? Well, there is an answer, but it may not be simple. First you must

assess the environmental and climatological impact of your lawn. Will you decide whether 'tis nobler to continue the path of localised man-made dictatorship or instead decide to democratise your garden by use of brute force? First let's address 'the natural'. A standard sward of grass typically contains twenty to thirty species of plants. It also plays host to a multitude of invertebrates and provides a feeding table for birds and mammals. It is, they say, relatively easy to maintain if you know your botany. However, think on this. The petrol mower you use is not made

up of easily replaceable resources. Nor is the engine included in EU emissions policy - a recent lab test showed that both two stroke and four stroke garden engines release vast amounts of 'illegal' toxin levels into the local atmosphere. Then there is the cost of a labourer coming to mow (in both emissions and money). If we feed or colour the lawn, the cost of those chemicals and their manufacture has to be included. Perhaps you have thought of a lawn of different construct? Camomile, Thyme or Pennyroyal. All admirable, but all short lived and complicated to keep in top condition. So, the alternative is perhaps plastic. A composite material, made by the petrochemical industry and produced in vast, polluting FarEastern factories - one assumes no positives can be found. Indeed a plastic lawn is an unnatural desert, offering very little to local nature. But, think on the wider implications. No machinery spewing out toxins. No need for extra spending on manpower or unnatural chemicals poisoning our drinking water. A green garden, that looks remarkably like the real thing and one that will last for thousands of years. Dare I say it, a garden that even Ozymandius would be proud of. Indeed, given our modern need to de-stress, a plastic lawn is very zen if one considers the only tool needed is a natural besom. Become one with your broom and allow the chi to flow. Notwithstanding, there is one revolutionary and ultimately sensible thing you can do with that odd patch of perennial Poa. Well, yes you can sell it for housing - that is perhaps a worthy alternative. But, for those that live with planning restrictions, to be truly world friendly, turn it all into raised vegetable beds. With the rise in counterfeit pesticides being used globally on our imported food, we now have a very real threat to our health from sources we are supposed to trust. Add the 'food miles' and it really is a no-brainer. Go, dig over the garden this winter. Not so much a paradise lost, but a paradise re-imagined? Happy Hannukah!

St Petersburg Classic Ballet Tour presents Giselle and The Nutcracker St Petersburg Classic Ballet has won plaudits across Russia, Scandinavia and the United States, and Crawley audiences now have the opportunity to experience the superb artistry of this acclaimed company on its first UK tour. The company will be performing at The Hawth with Giselle on January 18 and The Nutcracker on January 19. Combining classical training and technique with the best-loved Russian ballets, Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet’s performances have an air of magic, along with outstanding male soloists who will take your breath away! One of the few 19th century Romantic ballets to survive intact, Giselle tells of a village girl, whose everlasting love saves her beloved from a wretched dance to the death. The Nutcracker is a delightfully festive tale, and the perfect introduction to ballet, as Clara is whisked away on a fairytale adventure by her Nutcracker prince. Tickets: £34.50 (Discounts: £32.50/ Groups of 10+: £29.50). See both ballets for £55. To purchase, contact The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting www.hawth.co.uk.

Natural Christmas decorations from the garden We’re getting excited about Christmas at the nursery, and enjoy hearing our customer’s stories of how they are decorating their homes this year. This got us thinking: what is the best natural decoration for adding a splash of colour to your garden, or some festive flourishes indoors? Here are some of the nursery’s favourite natural indoor or outdoor Christmas decorations: Robert Dunckley, Director “Viburnum tinus 'Eve Price' is a tough shrub, which has a terrific display of pinkish-white flowers from December to April, followed by dark blue-black fruit. This popular form of laurustinus is denser and more compact than the species. It thrives in sun or shade and its shiny, dark green foliage provides an excellent evergreen backdrop for ornamental and feature plants.” Viburnum tinus 'Eve Price' is available at the nursery: 7.5 litre £19.95.

Tom Halliburton, Nursery Manager

Jack Dunckley, Director and Principal Landscape Designer

“After spruces and firs (also known as Christmas Trees!) Holly is probably one of the most recognizable evergreen shrubs at this time of year. Its proper name is Ilex aquifolium and is well known for its sharp, shiny leaves and rich red berries, which are produced in the autumn and winter on pollinated female plants. In spring and summer, it has small white flowers. It’s great for bringing inside and hanging over door frames or placing on the mantelpiece.”

“At Christmas, Helleborus Niger, better known as the ‘Christmas Rose’, produces round, flat, white – and occasionally pink-flushed – flowers. Set against leathery, deep-green foliage, which provides year-round interest, it’s a lovely little perennial and probably my favourite at this time of year. Don’t be fooled into thinking it will definitely flower at Christmas though, as they sometimes don’t bloom until spring. However, you can ensure December blooms by buying a plant at Christmas already in flower, which will last you through until spring.” Robbie Stringer, Manager

Ilex aquifolium 'Argentea marginata' is available at the nursery: 3 litre £9.99.

Maintenance

Shen Neville-Clarke, General Manager “Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ is a lovely compact shrub with deep green elliptic leaves. Dark red flower buds are produced in autumn and last through winter until white fragrant flowers open in spring. This is a great shrub for growing in a pot or for filling in gaps in the garden border. It prefers a shady spot, which helps the leaves to stay green.”

“Sarcococca confusa is a great compact evergreen shrub with simple, leathery-like leaves and tiny, white flowers in winter or spring, followed by red, purple or black berries, which may carry on into the following winter. It also smells nice!” Sarcococca confusa is available at the nursery: 2 litre £9.99

Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ is available at the nursery.

Johann Roignant, Senior Landscaper Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ Cornus alba ‘Elegantissima’ and Cornus alba ‘Gouchaullii’ – These Dogwoods are deciduous shrubs that have oval leaves and produce small flowers in May and June. Grown for their beautiful bright, coral-red stems that are revealed when the leaves fall, they’ll grow in many different conditions but for best results plant in large groups in full sun. They work particularly well with orange or purple-stemmed varieties of dogwood or planted with the stunning white trunks of the Himilayen birch (Betula utilis jacquemontii). Sibrica’ is on offer at the nursery in December: £6.95 each or 2 for £10.

Maddy Dunckley, Cloudtree Coffee Shop Proprietor “It’s not really a plant as such, but a Christmas wreath is a great natural way to spruce up your front door or use as part of your indoor decoration at this time of year. Looking online, there are lots of fun contemporary designs, which will last you for years however I prefer a natural wreath, which uses garden foliage, dried fruit, berries, cinnamon sticks, pine cones and so on – they look beautiful, smell amazing and really get me in the Christmas mood!” Maddy

Beautiful Christmas wreaths, handmade and produced on site by Maddy Dunckley, are available at the nursery: £24.99 each.

A property spending review Neil Moore of Guy Leonard Estate Agents looks at the Autumn Spending Review and assesses its effects Are things finally going to change for the better in the world of UK housing? Chancellor George Osborne certainly says that they are. In his autumn spending review he announced plans to “end the crisis of home ownership in our country.” Fine words. But what do they mean? The housing budget will be doubled to £2 billion a year and 400,000 new homes built across the country. The new building spree will be funded by public money and developers will be encouraged to build 200,000 starter homes. Funding will also go to build 135,000 shared ownership homes allowing for an initial buy-in from purchasers and then the acquisition of more shares as they can be afforded. The government will also widen the Help to Buy Scheme so that it will be open to all households earning less than £80,000. Londoners will get extra help with a new London Help To Buy scheme and the Right to Buy is also being revised and tenants in five housing associations will be able to buy their homes immediately. Young families will also benefit from the Chancellor’s decision to hold back the proposed cuts to tax credits by delaying implementation of these unpopular cuts. He is, however, capping housing benefit for new tenancies. Other measures include 10,000 new homes to be built to rent out at a rental value which will allow tenants to save for a deposit while they rent. Also, 8,000 specialist homes are to be built for older people or those with disabilities. The homebuyers that will lose out this time around are those purchasing second homes and buy to let properties. They will now be asked to pay a higher rate of stamp duty of 3 per cent above usual levels. Many will be greatly

put out by this. But those non buy to let purchasers at the lower end of the market may feel that they have won back a slender financial advantage over commercial investors. Those about to enjoy the pleasures of a second home will also pay more for this luxury opportunity. Again, whether this will deter buy to let or second home buyers in the long run remains to be seen, but meanwhile the Chancellor will raise an extra £1 billion by 2021 through this measure.

The homebuyers that will lose out this time around are those purchasing second homes and to let properties... They will now be asked to pay a higher rate of stamp duty How all this will help the overall housing situation is hard to gauge. Certainly even small steps forward are positive ones. Yet the elephant in the room remains. This is the inexorable rise of house prices – forecast by some to be between 6% and 10% next year. With so few properties coming onto the market now prices are being driven ever higher. The new home surge announced by George Osborne will provide some help in the long run. But in the short term it will only be a significant leap in the numbers of second hand stock that will put a brake on price rises and allow many buyers the vital time they need for their earnings to reach home purchase affordability.

Chilts overcome bogey team Downsmen Short Mat Bowls Dave Smith – Sports Editor West Chiltington short mat bowls team played against the strong Littlehampton based, Norfolk Bowls Club, in the County Knockout Cup. The Captains team of Sylvia &

Brian Woolcott and Jenny & Roland Naldrett, had a good 22-11 win but the opposition proved too strong on the day and the Chilts lost the match 37 – 28. The Chilts have always found the Crawley based Downsmen team difficult to beat so the away match

against them did not give the Chilts too much confidence in a victory. The Downsmen took an early lead but the Chilts fought back with the Captains team running out 27 – 18 winners Chilts ended up with an overall 47 – 40 win and 4 wellearned points.

Lacklustre Green & Whites beaten at home Saturday December 5 - London & SE Division 2 SE Horsham 28 – Deal & Betteshanger Rugby Richard Ordidge – Horsham RUFC There was a wakeup call for Horsham as they were beaten at home by a sharper, hungrier looking Deal & Betteshanger side that now climb above them to third in the table. Visiting captain and scrum-half Adam Michael must take the plaudits with four well taken tries as Horsham were slow to react to quickly taken tap penalties several times. Horsham head coach Nick Stocker was disappointed saying; “Our defence around the rucks and fielding kick offs was disappointing. We had a lack of focus and concentration at key moments and we were not clinical in attack and defence. They played a simple game and they did it effectively.” Horsham started the more quickly of the two sides and when Deal & Betteshanger were penalised for not rolling away at the breakdown, Joe Wilde slotted the penalty. From a penalty Deal & Betteshanger kicked for a line out 20 yards out and visiting captain Michael ran though some weak tackling by Horsham’s half backs to score his first try. Following a Deal yellow card the Green and Whites kicked for the corner and the ball was moved wide to Gray who with a direct run scored under the posts.

Following the conversion from Wilde, Horsham lead 10-7 after ten minutes. Horsham defended resolutely through several phases until they were penalised for offside and Michael took a quick tap five yards from the line to score unopposed as Horsham retreated. Horsham responded immediately when the visitors were penalised for coming

Horsham started the more quickly of the two sides and when Deal & Betteshanger were penalised for not rolling away at the breakdown, Joe Wilde slotted the penalty in at the side and Wilde kicked the three points as Horsham retook a 13-12 lead after 25 minutes. Then when Horsham were penalised for feeding at the scrum they took a quick tap and from the next breakdown Michael completed a first half hat-trick of tries to leave Horsham 17-13 down at the break. Jonny Whiting made a powerful break at the start of the second half which was finished off by Gray who bumped off a couple of attempted

tackles to score his second try to regain an 18-17 lead. Deal & Betteshanger responded immediately when their number 8 picked up from the back of the scrum to run blind and feed Michael to round the tackle and run in his fourth try with devastating simplicity. Although the conversion was missed, Horsham were never to regain the lead, and Deal & Betteshanger were 22-18 in front. Wilde narrowed the gap with a penalty but then visiting winger Luke Armstrong scored a superb individual try and put his side more than a score ahead at 29-21 with the try converted. As Horsham’s attacks became increasingly frantic Johnson delayed his pass to send Gray over for his hat-trick. The try was converted by Wilde to narrow the deficit to 29-28 with two minutes remaining. However Horsham’s defensive frailties were again exposed when from the restart fly-half Connor Moss kicked long but Horsham full back Mike Watts was indecisive and Deal & Betteshanger were the first to follow up and dive on the ball to score. In the end the scoreline flattered Horsham as the visitors only managed to convert two of their six tries. Horsham’s next fixture is away to Beckenham tomorrow, December 12. Hawks beat champions in thriller Pulborough sixth after U13 Horsham Hawks 75 – 67 U13 Worthing D&D

another frustrating defeat

Youth Basketball Dave Smith – Sports Editor

Saturday December 5 – London 3 South East Folkestone 23 - 5 Pulborough

The U13 Horsham Hawks claimed victory over the reigning Sussex league and cup champions for the second time this season in a home thriller featuring fifteen lead changes and seven ties. It was Worthing who struck first scoring twice inside the opening minute to go ahead 4-0 before the Hawks responded with two baskets from Josh Tavolieri to level the contest. This pattern repeated for much of the first quarter with Worthing edging ahead and Horsham clawing the score back until the Hawks managed to take their first lead of the game in the eighth minute with two converted free throws from Fin Bennett. A late 6-0 Horsham run saw the Hawks go ahead 21-20 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Worthing edged ahead again opening up a five point cushion before Horsham clawed the score-line back to 31-33 with less than a minute to go in the first half. Another late 6-0 Hawks run to end the quarter gave Horsham a 37-33 advantage going into the halftime interval. Horsham exploded out of the gates to start the third quarter extending their lead to nine at 49-40 with baskets from Bennett, Tavo-

Worthing continued to battle hard and responded with a 15-7 run of their own to close the score-line to 57-53 as the third quarter ended setting up an exciting finale. Despite an early well taken basket from Amy Willcox, Worthing had the better start to the fourth quarter exploiting a tired Horsham defence with a 10-4 run that put the visitors ahead 63-60 with five minutes remaining. A resilient Hawks team refused to quit and strong attacking basketball from Harry Rose pulled the lead back to a single point with four minutes to go and all to play for. Worthing scored another two

baskets extending their advantage once more before Bennett and Tavolieri again cut the lead to a single point with just two minutes remaining. A Horsham timeout settled the nerves as the Hawks went onto close out the contest in a calm and intelligent manner with well executed scores from Bennett and Charlotte Willcox while holding Worthing scoreless for the remainder of the game to seal a hard fought victory 75-67. In gale conditions during the first half, Charlie Mears got over the line for severely depleted Borough but they conceded two unconverted tries and two penalties to trail 16-5 at the break. Although having the wind in their favour in the second half Borough were unable to boost their score, Folkestone adding a converted try to run out comfortable winners. Coach Clayton Saunders, obliged to play himself because of senior absences, told the District Post: “The Folkestone pack dominated but Ewan Calloway returning from a prolonged injury and colt Luke Kilford played well for us. Yet, it was frustrating to see our lack of control, especially in the first half. “We were more disciplined in the second session but non availability for away matches is a problem – we’ve lost all four away games, whereas with our full side

out we’ve won all five at home, including a great win over Bromley who are now top. We’ve got strong contenders Aylesford Bulls at home tomorrow (Saturday December 12) – they’ve won eight of their nine games to date, including a narrow victory against Eastbourne last week. But I’ve got a

In very windy conditions, Sparrows took the lead against the run of play from a free kick converted by Benedict C. Some resolute defending and a missed penalty meant Sparrows hung on to take all 3 points. Man of the match was Tom D. Under 16 boys - Horsham Sparrows U16 played their return league game away to Ashington Cougars on a windy Saturday morning at Steyning. Nathan P. opened the scoring early for Sparrows, and after several near miss attempts at goal and solid goalkeeping from Ashington, Alex C clinched Sparrows second shortly before the half time whistle blew. Aerial balls were bouncing in the high winds yet Horsham were constructing some good passing moves before, with a combined build up from Joey Humphreys and John Burroughs and with only

Chesworth Rovers U12's 7 - 0 Royal Utd Saturday saw Hurricane Toby sweep into North Horsham as Chesworth Rovers were looking to extend their lead on the top of the A Division. A frenetic start in high winds saw a scoreline of 2-2 after just nine minutes and the teams were still level at 3-3 early in the second half before Loxwood begun to pull away with some strong and skilful play in the conditions. Although

Jarvis Brook managed another couple of goals, six second half strikes for the visitors wrapped up a very good win. Michael Murray (4), Jamie Maunder (2), Ben Peppercorn, Tim Bennett and Archie Talbot were on target for the Young Magpies. Roffey Robins Athletic U16 2 – 1 Copthorne U16. Robins worked hard to earn this vital home win against tough opposition. As a result they rise to 3rd in the U16 Div C table. Athletic created numerous chances but were denied by the crossbar and a string of saves by Copthorne’s keeper. However, it was Copthorne who came closest in the first half but were denied by keeper Sam Chantrill’s brave point blank save. Ben Gibbs opened the scoring for Robins when he pounced on a loose ball. Shortly after, Copthorne equalised through Owen Lawrence. The game seemed destined for a draw, but the deadlock was finally broken when a high back-pass, assisted by the wind, sailed into the Copthorne net.

Four goal Hornets keep promotion push on track football

Dave Smith - Sports Editor

Saturday December 5 – SCFL Premier Division Horsham 4 – 0 Pagham After two weeks without a game, Horsham quickly got back into their stride with a four goal demolition of Pagham at Gorings Mead last Saturday. The visitors - a team with promotion hopes of their own – were blown away by four goals in a frantic 24 minutes of the second half putting a dent in their play-off aspirations while maintaining the Hornets drive for automatic promotion. Having paid their own tribute to club servant Mick Browning before kick-off Horsham put in a determined display against a well organised side who had previously only lost four league matches this season. The first half, although goalless, was an entertaining affair with chances aplenty for both sides with both goalkeepers’ needing to be alert to maintain parity. Pagham’s best chance of the half fell to ex-Hornet Scott Murfin who, following a good strong run, slammed his effort against the post and the Horsham defence were able to clear the danger. Pagham keeper’ James Binfield then had to be at his best to save a close range header from Terry Dodd and then Joe Shelley’s header was frantically cleared by the visiting defence before Charlie Farmer fired over when he should

have hit the target. The last action of the half saw the lively Dodd through on goal but the Horsham frontman fired his shot high over Binfield’s goal. The second half continued its end to end pattern with Kieron Pamment forcing a save out of Binfield and then Johan Van Driel picked out Dan Simmonds who forced Hornets ‘keeper Gareth Williams to push his fierce effort away for a corner. Minutes later the deadlock was finally broken when Dodd’s cross was met by Pamment who saw his deflected shot fall to the feet of substitute Jack Rowe-Hurst who had the simple chance of scoring his first Horsham goal. Five minutes later it was 2-0. Captain Joe Shelley set out on a run that took him past a number of Pagham players before cleverly playing a disguised pass to Dodd whose shot found the net despite the best efforts of ‘keeper Binfield. With 72 minutes gone the game was killed off as a contest as Horsham hit their third and best goal through a superbly timed Dodd volley, and then with eight minutes left and after good play from RoweHurst, Luke Huggett got his first for the club by smashing a loose ball past Binfield. Tomorrow (Saturday December 12) Horsham host lowly Hassocks at Gorings Mead and with leaders Eastbourne Town on cup duty the Hornets have a chance to regain top spot in the Premier. Horsham Team: Williams, Duncan, Knee, Martin, Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Hunt, Dodd, Pamment, Archibald. Subs: Storrie, Rowe-Hurst, Huggett, Hadi.

In-form Chichester inflict Horsham Heath back to winning Young Men’s second defeat in a week ways against Shoreham Saturday 5th December 2015 Chichester City 3 – 0 Horsham YMCA Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter Horsham YMCA slipped to fifth spot in the Southern Combination League Premier Division standings on Saturday, after they were beaten 3-0 away at in-form Chichester City. Blustery winds and a heavy Oaklands playing surface made life tough for both sides, but it was the more clinical hosts who secured all three points thanks to a first half brace from Jimmy Wild and a controversial Dan Hegarty strike three minutes after the restart. YM manager Peter Buckland commented: “It was what I expected, a really tough game on a meadow. But we could easily have been 3-0 up in the first quarter of an hour and at that point I thought, ‘here we go’.”

YM winger Dave Brown fired an early effort off target and Sam Schaaf shot straight at home goalkeeper Dave Hook, before City defender Dan Hegarty flicked wide of the near post and Hook denied Schaaf again moments later. Dean Wright then sliced over and Chichester forward Graham Bush’s deflected shot flew wide, before Wild broke the deadlock when he latched onto a George Way through ball and coolly finished. Brown squandered two further YM chances, before they were dealt a devastating blow just prior to the break, as Wild was released again and he made no mistake in sliding the ball home. The only noteworthy moment in the second period came as the hosts contentiously extended their lead, Hegarty volleying in unopposed from close range, much to the frustration of a remonstrative YM defence who felt the goalscorer should have been flagged offside. Buckland concluded: “If our

chances had gone in, it completely changes the complexion of the game. I’m not down. The attitude was great and even at 3-0 we kept going and never threw the towel in. Again, it’s about how we react now.” YM Team: Fox, D. Sullivan, Crane, Gathern, Evans, Wright (Gedling 46) Dugdale, Hibbert, Brown, N. Sullivan, Schaaf (Gannon 81). Unused subs: Carden, Donaldson. Saturday December 5 – SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 2 – 0 Shoreham Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor Heath’s good run of form continued last Saturday at the Leisure Centre with a well-deserved win over Shoreham. This latest success notched up an impressive statistic of 6 wins from their previous seven matches: the only loss being to league leaders Eastbourne Town by a narrow 2-1 score line. A strong wind down the pitch and a playing surface that looked more like a ploughed field meant that both teams had to work hard to play any decent football. Shoreham had adjusted to the conditions quicker than the home team and Michael Chester in goal was called on to make a couple of point blank saves before two goals in quick succession changed the game. The first was a candidate for goal of the season when Rob Godfrey struck a fierce left foot shot from 25 yards into the roof of the net. Within two minutes Heath had doubled their lead after a great ball

from Jake Holmes released Kieran Purkis down the left who picked out Ollie Moore coming in at the far post to slot home. The second half favoured Shoreham as they had the wind at their backs but Heath were very solid and

Great sadness over loss of Horsham’s Cricket Festival Photos by John Lines

How long will it be until Sussex walk out at Horsham again?

cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Sussex County Cricket Club’s announcement that there will be no county cricket festival at Horsham next season has been greeted with dismay by Horsham CC, its members, local and more distant cricket lovers, the Council, the media and the county club, too. Horsham CC has an outstanding record of organising successful festivals, the award-winning wicket often producing Sussex wins. Players and officials love coming to

the club, where in over 100 years of county cricket famous names Jack Hobbs, Viv Richards and many more - have enjoyed playing there. Among outstanding performances in recent years was Steve Magoffin’s bowling demolishing Somerset, exceptionally high scoring from Ian Bell and James Taylor and centuries from Alec Stewart, Graham Thorpe, Mike Atherton and Kevin Pietersen. Horsham Cricket Club is especially disappointed and would love the Festival to continue but Sussex CEO Zac Toumazi told the District Post: “Horsham are great to work with and we love coming there but despite all of their tireless work no sponsor has been found. It costs a

huge amount to bring the Festival to Horsham and we need five days of good takings to spread the set up costs.” This year the lucrative Sunday game was completely washed out and the four day game only lasted three, curtailing income. No sponsor was found in 2014 but an anonymous benefactor stepped in and the weather was kind, ensuring good attendances and a healthy profit, 12,000 attending, just a short walk from the town centre. Jonathan Chowen, responsible for Leisure and Culture on Horsham District Council said: “Horsham has a unique ground and the Festival is a great, historic event in the cricket calendar, so the news is very sad and we’re very sympathetic.” Town

Matt Machin's in action for Sussex at this year's Horsham Festival Centre and Events Manager Garry Mortimer-Cook commented: “Everything in Horsham is on the up so it’s very disappointing” and Swan Walk Manager Gill Buchanan added: “Personally I’m very sad and it would be great if it could be saved.” Ironically Sussex’s announcement coincided with the launch of the Sussex Cricket Foundation, MD Tim Shutt saying: “Our aim is to create a lifelong passion for cricket in the heart of every community.” Professional cricket on grounds away from county HQs is an endangered species and, after enjoying the Horsham Festival, Alan Lee (former Times Cricket Correspondent) said: “County cricket must

go the extra mile to preserve such venues, too many have perished already. Any further erosion will be calamitous for public support. It must not be allowed to fade.” Simon Heffer writing in the Telegraph adding: “If we had more cricket festivals, as we used to have, the game might be more popular.” Notwithstanding Sussex’s cancellation Zac Toumazi told us: “If a committed sponsor comes forward we’d listen and see if anything could be done.” The Arundel Festival continues with a sponsor to be announced. Meanwhile Eastbourne with Council backing is actively seeking the return of county cricket to The Saffrons.

Will Palmer wins motorsport award Motor Sport Dave Smith – Sports Editor Will Palmer, the 2015 BRDC Formula 4 champion, was announced as the winner of the prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC Award (MABA) at the end-of-season Autosport Awards ceremony held at Grosvenor House in London. The 18-year-old from Southwater claims a coveted prize package which includes a cash sum of £100,000 and an invitation to test a McLaren Grand Prix car. The MABA was established in 1989 to help progress the careers of outstanding young British racing drivers, with previous winners including

David Coulthard, Jenson Button, Anthony Davidson and Dario Franchitti. Will was nominated for the award after becoming the 2015 BRDC Formula 4 Champion, along with five other drivers including Formula Renault 2.0 racers Jack Aitken, Ben Barnicoat and Jake Hughes. Ricky Collard and Toby Sowery, who both competed in MSA Formula this year, completed the line-up. Will said, “Every year I see the six finalists on stage and dreamt of one day taking part, it's an amazing opportunity. Now that I'm here as the winner, it's absolutely unbelievable. The first day was my first experience of all the cars, which are a lot quicker than my BRDC Formula 4 car, so I went

away after that, thought about where I could improve and managed to pull out some laps that I was very happy with. I need to say a massive thank you to all my family, especially my Dad as he puts so much effort into it and he has been a massive support throughout my career. Also to HHC Motorsport who have guided me for the last four years and to my sponsors, including Comma. In the future, the goal is obviously Formula One and this is a massive step in achieving that." BRDC President Derek Warwick added, "He impressed all of us and it was almost unanimous after the last run on the last day, it was almost decided there and then before the final interviews."

Will Palmer’s award has capped off a superb season
