Horsham train death plea Police appeal to the public to help solve riddle of victim’s last moments phil dennett News Editor
Police investigating the death of a Horsham 22-year-old on a rail line are appealing to the public to help solve the mystery of his last moments. British Transport Police, which is investigating the tragedy, has been trying to trace the final movements of Anthony Ransom as its investigators prepare evidence for an inquest. Anthony died from his injuries after he was hit by a train at a crossing near Littlehaven station in the early hours of November 26. Later that morning a schoolboy found his body and police were called. BTP fatalities investigator Candace Wright said: “While we are satisfied that Anthony’s death is not suspicious we would urge anyone who can help with our enquiries into how he came to be on the railway and his movements leading up
to that time to get in touch. “Understandably, Anthony’s family are devastated by their tragic loss. “Any information that can help us learn more about Anthony’s movements will greatly assist the investigation.” Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who spoke to or saw Anthony from 7pm onwards on November 25. Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on, or text 61016, quoting reference 129 of 26/11/2015. Police were called to a foot crossing close to Rowlands Road in Horsham at 8.43am on November 26, after receiving reports of a body being seen close to close to the railway line. After 999 workers arrived Anthony was pronounced dead at the scene. Instead of preparing for a happy Christmas Anthony’s family are in mourning as the investigators seek reasons for the tragedy. The family has requested to the media through police that they are left alone to come to terms with their loss and grieve privately.

Faulty Xmas hover boards Getting Christmas safe Christmas shoppers are being warned about ‘cheap, unsafe’ hoverboards in the run-up to the festive season. The boards, also called ‘self-balancing scooters’, are one of the “must have” presents this Christmas. But trading standards officers say the demand has prompted a flood of dangerous imports of the product. West Sussex County Council’s Trading Standards Team Manager Peter Aston says major safety issues include plugs without fuses, faulty cabling, unsafe chargers and defective cut-off switches within the product itself. Boards have been known to overheat, explode or catch fire, with very few having any markings or details of manufacturer or importer. Mr Aston said: “We have visited five suppliers in the county so far and one has had its consignment of 35 hoverboards held at Felixstowe while tests are carried out on the plugs. They were due to be sold on eBay. “Another supplier has had 500 held at Southampton docks which we have found to be unsafe and are about to be returned to China. Thankfully the other three suppliers were all compliant.

“However, we would advise people to only buy from known, reputable outlets, and beware of hoverboards that are sold at a ‘too good to be true’ price, particular if it’s an auction site.” Nationally 14,000 scooters-boards have been detained for safety issues so far this year. They include investigations by Barking and Dagenham Council, which provided the Post with a picture of one of the faulty items. David Barling, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Public Protection, said: “Hoverboards are the latest fashion craze, but consumers should be on their guard when purchasing these expensive products as the market is being flooded with cheap, unsafe imports in the run up to Christmas.” Sussex Police Sergeant Philip Badman warned: “Hoverboards are regarded by the Crown Prosecution Service as a ‘powered vehicle’ and as such are illegal to ride on pavements and footpaths. “ If readers know of any unsafe hoverboards they can contact Trading Standards at www.westsussex.gov.uk/ tsreport or by calling Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06.

8. Always switch off and unplug Christmas lights before you go to bed or go out. 9. Never leave e-cigarettes on charge unattended for long periods. 10. If you have lit an open fire or log burner, make sure embers are properly put out before you go to bed. 11. Test your smoke alarm. If it does not work, or you don’t have one treat yourself, it could be the best present you have bought, it could save your life in a fire. 12. Take the time to check on elderly relatives and neighbours this Christmas - make sure they are fire safe. Jackie Boyle, Community Fire Safety Manager for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Christmas is a busy time for many of us and safety is often the last thing on people's mind. Unfortunately, it is also a time when people are at greater risk of having a fire. There may be more people in your home than usual and some may be indulging in a festive drink or two. When you add this to all the other traditional activities of Christmas - trees, festive lighting, wrapping paper, candles and of course lots of cooking the risk of a fire increases."

Fire chiefs have drawn up a 12 days of Xmas safety reminder to avoid the festive period being ruined by damage or tragedy. They warn that although it is a time of enjoyment it also a period when the risk of having a fire in the home increases. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service's 12 Days of Christmas are : 1. Check that your Christmas lights are not damaged or broken before use and look out for loose wires. Also check that they conform to the British Standard. 2. Never place candles near your Christmas tree or materials that can catch light easily. 3. Make sure your family and any guests staying know what to do in the event of a fire - make an escape plan. 4. Decorations can burn easily don't attach them to lights or heaters. 5. Don't overload electrical sockets and take special care with Christmas lights. 6. The risk of accidents, especially in the kitchen is greater after alcohol has been consumed, so take care if you’re having a few festive drinks. 7. Most fires start in the kitchen never leave cooking unattended.

New Year boost for local job seekers
Job seekers have a New Year boost from booming telecoms providers who are increasing their staff by 50 per cent in Horsham. Global 4 and Home Telecom say to meet demand 50 new jobs will be on offer during the next 12-months, which they say will give a muchneeded boost to the local economy. About 20 of the jobs will be available for the start of 2016. The opportunities have arisen due to the exceptional increase in customer demand for both Global 4 and Home Telecom, which between them
now have more than 20,000 clients. Global 4, founded in 1998, which provides telephony and data services to businesses, has recently won several large contracts and needs extra staff to service these and future accounts. It is also the parent company of Home Telecom, which offers broadband, calls and mobiles to the consumer sector. Home Telecom, part owned by the UK’s two largest estate agents, Countrywide and Connells, is expanding to offer additional services to clients moving properties. Global 4 and Home Telecom to-
gether now employ more than 100 people, meaning the new vacancies will expand the workforce by 50 per cent. The companies say they are looking for confident people regardless of age or experience for a number of positions, including 15 people for their telesales teams. Other departments looking to fill vacancies are administration, service desk and technical support. Global 4 managing director Nigel Barnett said: “This is an exciting time of rapid growth for Global 4 and Home Telecom. “We are delighted to be able to offer so many new jobs to the local area. In particular, there are some excellent opportunities for school and college leavers, to whom we owe much of our considerable success. “While other industries are still struggling in the current challenging economic climate, telecoms is an industry that continues to go from strength to strength, meaning it can offer solid career opportunities.” For more information on the full list of vacancies available at Home Telecom, please visithttp://www. hometelecom.co.uk/find-yourcareer.php or email: recruitment@ hometelecom.co.uk. Sports fans will get a £12.3 million leisure centre in Broadbridge Heath, after councillors gave the scheme the go-ahead. Work is scheduled to start next Autumn and it should be open in 2018. Councillors approved the centre in a unanimous decision at a Horsham District council meeting last week. The council says the development will deliver the biggest public “dryside” sports and leisure centre in the district and will see a major new facility built to replace the existing Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre. The new centre will include a six court sports hall, an 80-station gym, a
cycle studio and three fitness studios. It will incorporate a new café and extended catering facilities serving both the leisure centre and adjoining Horsham District Indoor Bowls Club. Other facilities include a sensory room and new changing facilities for indoor and outdoor activity, including a “Changing Places” disabled changing facility. Also provided is a multiuse games facility, a soft play area, climbing wall and treatment room for beauty and sports therapy sessions. The new building will be designed to meet the needs of a population which are set to grow significantly over the next 20 years.
Commenting on the go-ahead plans, cabinet member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: “We are really pleased to have found a vibrant, new multi-purpose scheme that incorporates so many new and exciting facilities and will be more cost effective to manage in the future. “We have worked extensively with partners and local sports clubs to develop a proposal which meets the current and future needs of the district and I look forward to continuing the collaboration with these various partners as we move to the development stage.

Warning over dodgy meat sales Comedian Dom Joly has serious health message
A butcher told West Sussex investigators: “Well, goat is the same as sheep isn’t it?” The response came from one of the butchers quizzed in an investigation by West Sussex Trading Standards Service. The check revealed that some of the county’s butchers are selling meat described as “goat” which is actually from sheep. Trading Standards Officers went undercover to make test purchases after a consumer complained the goat meat he bought was sheep. Peter Aston, Trading Standards team manager, said: “The results were concerning. 11 samples of what was described as goat meat were purchased covertly from out-
lets in the county. In eight cases, DNA tests on the meat found it to be from sheep.” Initial enquiries have shown that in the majority of cases (six), the problem is with the wholesaler/abattoir rather than the retailer. However, in one case the butcher concerned told the Trading Standards Officer, “well goat is the same as sheep isn’t it?” Mr Aston added: “Once butchered, goat meat is very difficult to tell from mutton or lamb which is why proper traceability and labelling is vital. “Goat meat can sell for around £1 per kilo more than equivalent cuts from a sheep, so there is some financial advantage to be gained.”
David Barling, the County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Protection said: “This work shows how important it is for the public to let us know of their concerns. “From a single consumer complaint, a widespread problem has been identified that won’t just be affecting West Sussex. “Our Trading Standards Officers will certainly get to the bottom of what has been going on and are sharing their findings with the Food Standards Agency.” If you want to let Trading Standards know of a case of suspected meat substitution you can do so by calling Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06 or online atwww.westsussex.gov.uk/tsreport
TV prankster Dom Joly is giving people some winter laughs but getting home a serious message after a visit to Horsham. On line audiences are enjoying him swap his “I’m on the phone” catchphrase for “call 111” in support of a new campaign launched today across Sussex to raise public awareness of when to use the 24-hour NHS 111 helpline this winter. Best known for his giant-phonecarrying character from ‘Trigger Happy TV’, Dom recently took time out from rehearsing for a new project in the area to create a ‘not QUITE an emergency’ campaign film for the local NHS, using his trademark style of comedy and an undercover film crew. Shot on location in Horsham, the film shows a heavily disguised Dom blighted by various minor ailments that he refuses to accept aren’t worthy of being considered a medical emergency. Hidden cameras capture him seeking support from unsuspecting members of the public, before pretend paramedics arrive on the scene and NHS staff dressed as giant blue figure
Our present to you
“1s” appear walking about in the background. Dom said: “We used real-life examples of non-emergency conditions people have gone to A and E or called 999 for – a toothache, a blister, an insect bite and even a hangover. While it was obvious the people I spoke to didn’t think my plight was a 999 emergency, hardly anyone suggested calling 111 instead. One chap even suggested calling 999 to find out the right number to call – he knew a non-emergency NHS number existed but couldn’t remember what it was.” National research carried out for the NHS has revealed low public awareness of NHS 111 across the country. Dr Minesh Patel, Clinical Chair of Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG said: “We know that 1 in 3 visits to local A&E are for conditions that could be dealt with outside of hospital. With Dom Joly’s help, this campaign has been designed to reach out to local people this winter – especially those aged under 35 who we know have the lowest awareness of NHS 111 – and encourage them to call 111 when they need urgent medical help but it’s not a 999 emergency

Deadly diet pill warning after inquest The Coroner for West Sussex has issued a warning about danger from a diet pill, after conducting a Horsham inquest into a young woman’s death. Penny Schofield spoke about the hazards of Dinitrophenol, also known as DNP, which is an unlicensed drug is freely available to buy on the internet. Earlier Ms Schofield heard evidence about the death of Rachael Cook, 25. The inquest found Rachael died of fatal Di-nitrophenol toxicity and ruled that Rachael's death was an “accidental consequence", of taking DNP in relation to her eating disorder. Ms Schofield said: "I know there is pressure on young people to be slim and many will take drastic action to achieve this but this is not the way to do it. I would urge them to look at the almost inevitable fatal consequences of taking this fatal drug. "Let not another family lose a young person to such painful and unnecessary death." Racheal died at Worthing Hospital on May 15 this year after taking the
tablets to lose weight. In her ruling, Ms Schofield said: "Rachael Cook died aged 25 years old having ingested the slimming drug Dinitrophenol (DNP). DNPis a poison and can lead to fatal toxicity. "The drug is marketed as a slimming aid, fat burner and food supplement and is readily available on the internet. "However, Public Health England in October issued warnings to the public about the use of this drug. It is a poison. "There have been 24 cases of DNP toxicity since January 2007, five of which have been fatal. Three of which took place in 2013 alone. "There was a reduction in 2014 but this year there has been a rise. Some 20 cases have been referred to National Poisons Agency of which five have been fatal. Most have been teenagers and young adults. "DNP is not a licensed drug. DNP is an industrial chemical unfit for human consumption. It is illegal for use in foodstuffs.
"One of the dangers of DNP is that it accelerates the metabolism to a dangerously fast level. Speeding up the metabolism may burn fat but it can trigger a number of dangerous side effects and may be fatal. "Other Coroners have tried to alert the Public to the danger of this drug. I urge those currently taking the drug or considering doing so to think again." DNP, which is also available as a powder, is not a controlled substance despite being linked to several previous deaths in the UK and overseas. The industrial chemical used by Rachael, from Worthing, , which is unfit for human consumption, was the subject of an Interpol warning notice issued to 190 countries in May this year.
An award-winning charity shop has become a victim of its own success. Demand is so great from customers at Cancer Research UK in East Street, Horsham, that it needs more items to sell. Spokeswoman Victoria Godfrey
said: “We have been so busy we are now running out of items to sell. “We desperately need jumpers, tops, boots, handbags, homeware and jewellery. A lovely bag of items could raise £30 for our charity”. The staff are pictured outside the shop

His family says he is extremely passionate about his karting and is aiming to emulate his hero Fernando Alonso’s success in F1. Success is also following at the other circuit that Louis races at in Sittingbourne at the Bayford Meadows circuit, where Louis has started taking many pole positions and several podium finishes including his first win in an equally competitive field, with support from Extech. The karting weekends are a family event, with mum, dad, younger brother Marco and Fizzy the whippet travelling down in the old motorhome on the Friday evenings from Loxwood, staying overnight for the Saturday testing and then the Sunday qualifying and races. His dad Ken is mechanic, mum Frankie provides catering, and brother Marco compares race notes and kart set-up. Marco also competes in the entry level Bambino class and has starting winning races. Louis has now moved up to the Honda Cadet class with faster engines and increased competition and in the first couple of meetings is already battling at the front of the field, with a heat win and several 2nd positions already attained. Dad Ken said: “Even with a limited budget, Louis has proved he has the talent, focus and determination to succeed and would greatly like to hear from organisations wishing to promote their brand awareness and support what his family feel is an up and coming Formula 1 star of the future, through company name branding, regular progress reports for media publication etc.” Louis would be delighted to hear from anyone via email: racing@extech. co.uk.
for being Antarctica aware
Katie with Jane Rumble Recognising the importance of Antarctica has won student Katie Banks the ‘Young Geographer of the Year 2015’ title. Katie, a pupil at Millais School in Horsham, took the 14-16 age group title in a national competition run by the Royal Geographical Society from
thousands of entries. To mark the centenary of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s “Endurance” expedition and to support the education of school pupils on Antarctica and its importance, Katie and other pupils were asked to design posters on Antarctica and express why it matters. Judges were so impressed by the impact of Katie’s entry that they awarded her the title. Please find three photos of Katie attached (next to Jane Rumble and John Shears). The winners of ‘Young Geographer of the Year 2015’ were announced on Friday 4 December at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG). To celebrate the centenary of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance Expedition, pupils nationwide were asked to respond to the question ‘Why does Antarctica matter?’ The awards were presented to pupils by Jane Rumble, Deputy Commissioner of the British Antarctic Territory, and Dr John Shears. of Scott Polar Research Institute, in a ceremony at the Society’s headquarters in Kensington, London. 2015 marks 100 years since Shackleton’s ship, Endurance, sank beneath the ice of the Weddell Sea. Shackleton’s expedition is recognised today as an incredible feat of endurance, and is credited with increasing public fascination with Antarctica. Dr Rita Gardner CBE, Director of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), said: “Shackleton’s amazing story of leadership and survival is part of the UK’s great Antarctic heritage and tradition of scientific endeavours. And Antarctica is still vitally important today, not least for its role in helping us understand climate change. We asked school children to consider the importance of Antarctica and have had a fantastic response.”

Unknown stories see the light of day War history fans got a treat with an event at Horsham museum. They met the man who shed new light on the overlooked war heroes from the town. Historian Garry Cooper chatted to them and signed copies of his detailed book Horsham’s Heroes of
George Whitehead
World War II 1939-1945, which took him years of research to complete. Last Saturday’s session came the day after the book was officially launched in a 300-copy limited edition. As a result of Mr Cooper’s work for the book 43 names were added to the town’s war memorial in the Carfax in

George Hampshire
Book on local heroes proves popular A book on Horsham war heroes has proved so popular that its author is attending another signing session this weekend. Gary Cooper, author of Horsham’s Heroes of World War II 1939-1945, will be at Horsham Museum in the Causeway from 10am until noon on Saturday. Mr Cooper was at the museum last Saturday, and the museum said that by popular demand he would return tomorrow. Mr Cooper has donated £5 from the sale of each copy sold to the Museum. The book has a limited print run of 300 copies. Among the many stories in the meticulously researched book are three stories which illustrate the vastly different ways in which men lost their lives. Gunner George Whitehead joined the Royal Artillery in November 1940 and was posted to 231 Sound Locating Training Regiment, Blandford, Dor-
set. He was taken ill and, as a serving soldier, died of pneumonia in February, 1941, at a Military Hospital in England aged 31. George had been born in 1909, to George Whitehead senior and his wife, Louisa Margaret (formerly Greenfield). Louisa came from Horsham where she was born in 1880 and married George at the local Parish Church of St. Mary's. George, who was single, had been a familiar sight for 15 years in the Carfax, Horsham, selling evening newspapers and also delivering papers in the morning until he joined the forces and ultimately perished. He is buried in Horsham Hills Cemetery. Private George Hampshire died in April 1941, aged 20, in North Africa, only a month from his 21st birthday. He had joined the army before the war at 16 after working at a brickworks, and was killed fighting with the Royal Sussex Regiment in the North African Desert Campaign against Italian
troops. As the Allied troops advanced on the Red Sea port of Massawa George was killed by tank fire. He was buried in a war cemetery in Eritrea, and was one of eight children from a family in Roffey Village. The Massawa attack proved successful. Pilot Sgt Robert Denyer was another who died young after he also joined the forces before the war, entering the Royal Air Force Volunteer Force. At only 19 he was flying dangerous missions over enemy occupied countries in Havoc fighter-bombers that carried a crew of two. Having survived these sorties Robert was killed on home ground while flying a Havoc in England, his plane crashing near Ford airfield. Only a few days before had had enjoyed a visit home to Horsham with his gunner. Both had escaped death before their visit by parachuting from a stricken plane, but there was to be no reprieve in the Ford crash. He is buried at St Marys Church, Clymping.

NHS promises to transform urgent Collyer’s students hear about apprenticeships treatment with improvements
Patients from Horsham have been promised “transformed” urgent treatment in changes to a hospital serving the area. Visitors from Horsham were among those given a tour of the Urgent Treatment Centre at Crawley Hospital by the Sussex Community NHS Trust. Evelyn Rock, of Mannings Heath, Horsham said: “The staff were very helpful, talking about what was happening and why. Going from two to six beds for clinical assessment makes a huge difference to the downstairs area, and upstairs, in sub-acute ward,

there is quite a significant change.” The centre is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to treat most injuries or illnesses that are not life threatening including sprains and strains, broken bones, minor burns and scalds, minor head and eye injuries. It covers Horsham, Crawley, and nearby areas. NHS Crawley Clinical Commissioning Group, which purchases and plans the majority of local health services, is spearheading improvements. Clinical Chief Officer Dr Amit Bhargava said: “People have been very clear with us that they want as many

health and wellbeing services provided locally that are safe, easy to access and provide high patient satisfaction - our commissioning plans and intentions have always reflected this ambition. “A planned increase in urgent care beds and service expansion of the Urgent Treatment Centre at Crawley Hospital, subject to approval, will help save hundreds of patients each year from travelling to hospitals much further afield.” The Open Day at the hospital last Friday saw people given a virtual tour of how an expanded and refurbished centre might look using computer generated images. It showed an enlarged Clinical Assessment Unit with more beds to greatly increase capacity and scope of service. A new treatment area for children and a larger reception area will ensure the best possible experience for local patients, according to the NHS. The plans, which are subject to final approval, also include a new ward with 26 beds for people who need hospital care but are not so unwell they need treatment at a bigger, acute hospital such as East Surrey Hospital. The ward includes an art therapy unit, gymnasium and assisted kitchen facilities to prepare patients for the transition back to their home.

Students who might take a different path in life other than university got a glimpse of the world of apprenticeships. More than 50 at Collyer’s college in Horsham students attended presentations where speakers illustrated the range available, including the Diplomatic Service and NHS. A-level student Mae Kenealy said: “I found the session very useful because it gave an insight into apprenticeships and where to find them.
There are certainly more jobs and apprenticeship opportunities in different companies than you would think.” Lucy Hargreaves, from the ‘Progression Directorate’ at Collyer’s, said: “I’m delighted that so many students attended to hear about some exciting apprenticeship opportunities. The speakers were excellent and it was great that they could take time out from their busy schedules to help our students.”

Buy ball tickets to help kids like Henry Horsham lit up for Xmas
The personal charity of former “forces sweetheart” Dame Vera Lynn is hoping supporters will snap up special gifts for Christmas and the New Year. The West Sussex-based Dame
Vera Lynn Children’s Charity, which supports babies and children under five, is holding its annual Spring Ball on March 19 at the Felbridge Hotel and Spa in East Grinstead.
All the funds raised will help children like Henry Maxwell, aged 3, pictured. He and his twin sister were born as an emergency in July 2012 because he was very ill, his heart rate dropping and the doctors very worried. He was placed in an Intensive Care Unit when nine days old where he was given a special medicine to help his pancreas function and not given the all clear until his first birthday. It was then discovered that he had been born with a brain injury that caused Cerebral Palsy in all four limbs. While he struggles to keep up with his able-bodied sister at home in East Grinstead, at the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity near Billingshurst, he is able to do the same things as all of his friends. The ball is being run to provide money to continue the work to help youngsters like Henry. At the ball guests will enjoy a drinks reception followed by a delicious three course meal and musical entertainment by the band “Fever” the Swingtime Sweethearts and Katherine Samuelson. There is the chance to win good prizes at the raffle and auction. Tickets are £75* per person and to book go online at www.dvlcc.org.uk or call 01403 780444 or email Catherine. bristow@dvlcc.org.uk*£1.50 booking fee applies if booked online or via card.

Preventing homelessness in young people in West Sussex Most youngsters in danger of being homeless in West Sussex find friends or relations to stay with after being given safe accommodation while they sort out their lives. Over the last four years more than 1200 young people in West Sussex have been prevented from being homeless by the work of the Youth Homelessness Prevention Team of West Sussex County Council. From May 2011 to March 2015, a total of 1227 young people sought help for homelessness in West Sussex. The council says that of that number, only 138 are still being actively supported by the team, with the majority returning home after receiving assistance. Other individuals have moved in with extended family or family friends, while some have come into
care. Around 17%, though, have been guided into supported accommoda-
Over the last four years more than 1200 young people in West Sussex have been prevented from being homeless by the work of the Youth Homelessness Prevention Team tion or private tenancies. Clive Mills, team manager, said: “Our focus is to work with the fam-
ily to see if the relationships can be rebuilt and if the family can be kept together. Supported accommodation is provided for those who cannot go home to ensure they have a safe environment. The aim is to always do what is the best for the young person.” The initiative started in 2008 when Crawley Borough Council and Social Services pooled resources to provide two permanent living locations for homeless young people, with a social worker used to assess their safeguarding concerns. The scheme went countywide in 2011. One young man said: “It takes a bit of time to settle in, as it does in any place, but I can’t fault it. If you need the staff for anything they do all they can.”
Campaigners frustrated over Gatwick wait
BREAKING NEWS CLINICALLY PROVEN TO HELP REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF TINNUTUS
Campaigners against Gatwick Airport expansion say they are frustrated over delay in confirming Heathrow should take an extra runway. CAGNE, Communities Against Gatwick Noise and Emissions, have reacted to the Government’s delay on a decision, saying it put residents of Sussex, Surrey and Kent “in limbo” yet again having had the Airports Commission announcement in July not to expand Gatwick. The group’s chair Sally Pavey said: “We have spent three years participating in the Airports Commission independent report, the gathering of facts which has cost the taxpayer £20m and yet the Government is turning it into a political travesty, something we understood the Commission was set up to avoid. “The announcement illustrates that those with money speak louder than those that live, work and pay taxes, as Gatwick have spent millions lobbying parliament which residents can never compete against. No reports have been undertaken by Climate Change or Environmental bodies into the pollution Gatwick would cause with a second runway as it would be larger than Heathrow with no infrastructure, nor has the true cost to the taxpayer of Gatwick expanding been accessed as Gatwick
2 will cost the taxpayers billions and can never be the answer for the UK economy or aviation. “They may think Gatwick is the easy option because this is the story that Gatwick has sold, but if the Government had read the truth, ie Gatwick’s proposals, they would have
CAGNE have reacted to the Government’s delay on a decision, saying it put residents of Sussex, Surrey and Kent ‘in limbo’ seen, as Sir Howard Davies did, they are very flawed, a fact that 12 local authorities, numerous councils and the many senior MPs have who oppose Gatwick 2 who they are fully aware of the deficit, lack of unemployment that surrounds Gatwick, the fact it can never be anything more than a leisure airport, and how it would destroy affluent areas of Sussex, Surrey and Kent.”

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT... We have been using the Resident and Clive G Hancocks subsequently, The District Post for Director advertising since the launch of the paper. Whilst it is difficult to quantify results, I would say that as a free paper, delivered around the whole Horsham District and picked up from selected places in the area, they are friendly to deal with, professional, very helpful with design and swift to print. Deadline is Wednesday for a Friday print and they have NEVER let us down! We use this paper exclusively. Because it is a free paper and the best known for that around the area, the circulation is getting bigger by the week/month and therefore I would recommend highly as THE advertising vehicle to use.

Pearls, diamonds and Horsham’s small business Saturday stars more at Sakakini
There was a definite shimmer and a sparkle in the Horsham Carfax, last Thursday evening, as award winning Sakakini Jewellers hosted their diamonds and pearls event. The guests enjoyed a unique preview of their Christmas range and an opportunity to handle some very special diamonds. On arrival, guests were greeted with a glass of sparkling wine, a tray of nibbles and a huge array of gorgeous pearl strings to peruse, before being entertained and educated by owner and local personality, Dominic Sakakini. Representatives from Ping Ping (pearl merchants) had brought along a staggering selection of different pearls (not normally available for retail) for the guests to enjoy before being whisked around the globe from Russia, to India, China and South Africa, via a fascinating explanation of the diamond markets of the world, by Dominic. Guests were then invited to join Dominic at the back of the shop, as he handed round diamonds for them to examine, then were offered the chance to buy a £60,000 (retail price) diamond for just £22,000. Dominic has gained a reputation in the region for selling diamonds, at wholesale rather than retail prices, and for his passionate belief that, with returns of up to 30% a year, diamonds are one of the best forms of investment. The evening didn’t stop there, as Dominic went on to explain how he can customise new and existing pieces of jewellery (so that clients get the chance to love, wear and enjoy their investment) and guests handled, admired and learnt about the different diamonds and pearls. Sakakini Jewellers hosts quarterly events at different venues and also runs The Sakakini Diamond Club, which offers all members the chance to buy diamonds and jewellery at wholesale prices, take advantage of some fantastic investment opportu-
nities, as well as enjoy invitations to some of the Sakakini Jeweller’s exclusive events. The next event will be held at Denbies on February 4, 2016. For more information about diamonds, jewellery, or the Sakakini Diamond club, contact Dominic at info@sakgems.com or visit www. sakgems.com
December 5 saw many of Horsham’s small businesses showing just what makes Horsham as a market town, special, as they celebrated Small Business Saturday in style. There was a fantastic range of one day only promotions, special displays and demonstrations across the town, adding to the excitement of a busy Christmas trading day. There was something for everyone in Horsham town centre, from French delicacy sampling in Marion de Montfort, Sicilian Olives in Panino’s Cafe and free handmade gift tags in The Linen Shop, to a chance to meet Batman at Gobsmack Comics and free reusable shopping bags from Guy Leonard Estate Agents. La Vida Boutique was rewarding their High Street Hero customers with a fee gift for a qualifying spend. Horsham’s virtual business community also came to the fore with lots of successful online trading on the day, many offering click and collect services. Pop Up Horsham, the independent retail ‘start up to stay up initiative’, had chosen the day to celebrate five months of successful trading and was a hive of activity all day long - and not just because the ‘now famous’ Bee Cosmetics were back in store. With everything from professional photographer packages through to gluten free pet foods and gorgeous children’s wooden toys, Pop Up Horsham is becoming an essential source of original gift ideas. On the Saturday afternoon, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Gordon Lindsay, made a whistlestop tour of small businesses tak-
ing part, learning more about them and taking the opportunity to pick out a few Christmas gifts on route. Cllr Lindsay was accompanied by Adam Worley, from the National Association of Town and City Centre Management, who are advisors to the Government on policies affecting our high streets, as well as local members of the Federation of Small Businesses.
Pop Up Horsham, the independent retail ‘start up to stay up initiative’, had chosen the day to celebrate five months of successful trading The businesses visited included, Pop Up Horsham, Cocoa Loco, Embargo Cargo and La Vida in Swan Walk, Forget Me Not Plants, Crates and the recently award winning All Types of Mortgages in the Carfax and Beeches Buffet, and Gobsmack Comics in Piries Place. Cllr Lindsay commented afterwards: “I was really impressed by the small business owners I met. Their businesses make a significant contribution to business in both the town centre and the district as a whole, for example Cocoa Loco manufactures its chocolate in Shipley. I was also impressed by how these small businesses are using the internet to support their busi-
nesses and, in some cases, generating sales from overseas countries. Pop Up Horsham is a great idea as it gives budding retail entrepreneurs experience in live High Street retailing without having to sign up to long term property leases. I would like to thank Swan Walk Shopping Centre and especially its manager, Gill Buchanan for her support to Pop Up Horsham and to the council which is fully behind this initiative. “I am greatly impressed by the quality of our small businesses and the personal service they offer their customers. We are very fortunate to have such a passionate and inspiring group of entrepreneurs running our town businesses and it was great to meet so many of them ‘in action’ on such a busy Saturday. I am especially pleased that the council’s support for the Pop Up Horsham initiative is delivering on its promise to give aspiring retailers just the sort of experience they need to progress to being our shop keepers of tomorrow.” Horsham’s small business community continues to evolve, with the introduction of a number of new original or local franchisee owned stores opening in just the last few weeks, all adding to the appeal of the town as an excellent pre-Christmas destination. New businesses include: Tina and Ann - South Street, Gobsmack Comics – Piries Place, Embargo Cargo – Swan Walk, Pop Up Horsham – Swan Walk (always something original in store) all great for gift shopping. Additionally some great new eateries include: Muffin Break and Cocoa Loco’s Hot Chocolate Bar in Swan Walk and La Piazzetta in the Bishopric.

Can you feel it coming in the air tonight? To have chart-topping success as a solo artist and as a member of a group, is something that not many musicians have achieved. Over a period of 40 years though, that is a perfect description of the career of Phil Collins. On the day that Phil reaches retirement age, tribute act No Jacket Required are to perform over two hours of those hits, as they return to The Hawth, Crawley, in January. “It’s the show that he never performed”, said No Jacket Required frontman, Dave Whitehouse, “We will be playing over 20 hit singles by both Phil Collins and Genesis in the same concert. Every song on the show is a hit – and there are so many, we’ll be on stage for more than two hours!”. Phil Collins turns 65 on January 30 and the only UK 12-piece tribute to the Genesis frontman will be celebrating his birthday in style, by showcasing both sides of his award-winning career. When you look back at the catalogue of hits, it’s easy to see why the voice of Phil Collins provided a constant soundtrack to the 1980s and early 1990s. Collins came from behind his drum kit to take on vocal duties in Genesis, for their 1976 album ‘A Trick Of The Tail’, following the departure of Peter Gabriel. ‘Follow You Follow Me’ became the band’s breakthrough hit in 1978 and was to become the first of 20 Top 10 hits, by either Phil Collins or Genesis, over the next 20 years. The music has enduring appeal and saw the recent Genesis ‘R-Kive’ compilation reach the Top 10 of the UK album charts, on its release at the end of 2014. When Phil Collins released his first solo single in 1981, few would have thought that he would match the suc-
cess of Genesis – yet ‘In The Air Tonight’ became a worldwide hit and his solo career would go on to achieve even greater heights. From that point onwards, Collins would alternate between solo and group projects, with hit singles produced at every turn. Yet apart from a short charity appearance in 1990, his solo band and Genesis never performed together. Dave Whitehouse spoke of Phil Collins' unique vocal talent: “Phil Collins’ voice identifies not only his own songs, but also those of Genesis and in fact many people often confuse the two," adding, "We have always performed a Genesis medley in our shows, but once again this year, we are going to perform Genesis songs in their entirety. It really is the best of both worlds – Phil Collins and Genesis in the same show!” No Jacket Required were the UK’s first twelve-piece tribute to the solo career of Phil Collins and have been performing since 2003, building up an appreciative following of their own over that time. Based in West Sussex, the band features a live brass section and backing vocalists. Lead vocalist Dave Whitehouse has performed as Phil Collins for 19 years and is wellprepared for the new show, having previously fronted a Genesis tribute and meeting Phil back in 2005. The band even follow in Phil’s footsteps by raising money for the homeless. They have been supporting a small charity called the Bridge Trust for many years and recently passed the £20,000 mark for their donations. Dave commented: “Another Day In Paradise is a classic Phil Collins track in that it has a message which connects with the listener on a personal level, like so many of his
songs. We perform it at every show and it seemed apt for us to collect for a homelessness charity too. Phil has done so much for charity over the years and it’s a cause which he is well-known for supporting. We are proud to support the vital work of The Bridge Trust and hope that this show will raise even more funds to support the homeless. The people of Crawley have always been very generous and it is hugely appreciated by the Trust and by the band.” “Name a hit single by Phil Collins or by Genesis and we’ll probably be playing it”, enthused guitarist Vic Chase, “It’s a spectacular show and we are excited about taking it out on tour this year. We’ll be playing tracks
from albums between ‘A Trick Of The Tail’ and ‘Dance Into The Light’ – hence the name of this year’s tour – and there’s a lot to choose from! We have played at The Hawth many times and we are really looking forward to returning again with this new show - it’s always a special night.” With this show combining such songs as Against All Odds, Easy Lover and Sussudio with Genesis hits like That’s All, I Can’t Dance and Invisible Touch, it promises to be a unique concert not to be missed. Performance: January 30, 2016 at 7.30pm. Tickets: £20, which can be purchased by contacting The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting www.hawth.co.uk.

PETs POST Sponsored by
Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about protecting pet primates. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.
Protecting pet primates in the UK abbi moon RSPCA
There are around 5,000 primates kept as pets in the UK. The typical species kept are marmosets, capuchins and squirrel monkeys. But can these highly intelligent, complex animals really have their needs met if kept as pets? Like humans, primates rely on their mothers, often until adulthood and beyond. Primates for the pet trade are often removed from their mothers at just a few weeks old to be hand-reared by humans, a distressful and cruel practice. Many animals may be taken from the wild; a practice which often leads to the death of mothers, who try to defend their young. Many of the young don’t survive the transportation process, often being smuggled in inappropriate containers. Once these animals enter the pet trade, there is very regard for how a buyer may actually care for the animal. The commonly kept primates can live for up to 46 years. They need a spacious and enriched environment that challenges their intelligent brains and allows for them to behave like primates should. Often primates are kept in entirely inappropriate housing such as parrot cages, aviaries and sheds. These types of environments can’t provide for their complex physical and social needs which can lead to abnormal behaviour and self-harm. Every single pet primate taken in by a Cornwall monkey sanctuary arrived with behavioural problems. These include teeth-grinding, self-biting and constant pacing - evidence of the mental distress they experienced as pets. Inappropriate diets and little or no access to sunlight are common and lead to nutritional disease
and deficiencies. Many develop Metabolic Bone Disease, leading to fractured or deformed bones, painful abscesses and tooth decay. The condition is common in primates weaned too early from their mothers. Primates can spread disease to humans and vice versa, like measles and herpes. Human company is not a replace-
Pet Profile: Marley At 18-months-old, Marley the marmoset was bought for £900 over the internet and confined to a small parrot cage the majority of the time. He was given no access to essential ultraviolet light, absorbed from sunlight. Instead, we were told the cage was pushed up to an open doorway for a few hours once or twice a week. The cage contained potentially harmful objects and
lacked hiding spaces, so Marley was always in full view of the house occupants and their two dogs. As Marley was living a miserable life, unable to exhibit normal primate behaviour, he was taken by police. Marley was taken to a specialist primate centre, where he was taught how to socialise with other marmosets and live with other primates in his new, more natural surroundings.
ment for being with your own kind. Primates are highly social beings; so isolated primates endure a life of torment. Not only can they become depressed, but they can selfmutilate, pluck out their own hair, or display behaviour such as rocking and self-hugging. All of these symptoms suggest suffering. Primates were kept alone in 60 per
cent of the cases the RSPCA has investigated in England and Wales. Current regulations do not adequatley protect pet primates. The RSPCA beleives that the only way to protect these animals is to ban the trade of and keeping of primates as pets. We strongly believe that primates, as highly intelligent and complex wild animals, are not suit-
able pets. 15 European countries have already introduced a ban on keeping primates as pets, for either all or some species. It’s about time the UK followed in their footsteps. SIgn the petition at www.rspca.org.uk If you are worried about a primate being sold or kept, call the national RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.

Christmas can be very stressful for us. Rushing around doing the big Christmas food shop, getting those last minute presents and making sure the house is spotless in time for the relatives... but the festivities can also be stressful for our pets. In light of this, Arun Veterinary Group would like to provide you with some helpful tips to make sure those special members of our family stay out of mischief and in good health! Some of us choose to decorate our houses with beautiful arrangements of flowers and other plants at Christmas time. However, many of them such as poinsettia, lillies, holly and ivy can be fatal to cats and dogs and can cause symptoms from vomiting and diarrhoea to kidney disease. Do check that your plants are compatible with your pets! Presents under the tree can be very inviting to cats and dogs, with their rustling and glittery holographic papers, bows and ribbon. Curious pets can accidentally ingest pieces of wrapping material which can cause intestinal blockages. The same goes for tinsel and tree decorations. Contact your vet immediately if you think your pet has swallowed something they shouldn’t have. Fireworks, party poppers, crackers and loud guests can be very upsetting to cats and dogs and can lead to unwanted behaviour such as spraying, aggression and scratching furniture. There are effective products for both cats and dogs available over
the counter which are proven to help with stressful situations, some of which are on special offer throughout December. Telephone or drop in to the practice and speak to one of our lovely team if you need any additional information. We all want to treat ourselves and our pets at Christmas but foods such as Christmas pudding and chocolate can cause your pet to become very unwell. Bones, especially cooked ones, can splinter and cause intestinal damage. If you wish to give them a Christmas treat we suggest offering some of the yummy festive food items we have included within the stockings our nurses have put together! For some pets, having all that extra attention at Christmas can be pure bliss but for others it may be very stressful. Houses start to fill up with all sorts of new things including trees, presents, decorations, food and strange visitors. Any type of celebration can bring about change, so taking the time to think about it from a pet’s point of view can make these periods more enjoyable for all. The best piece of advice that we at Arun Vets can give is to remember to keep a close eye on your pets, and not to overlook them during the festivities. Do feel free to contact us if you would like any advice. We provide our own out of hours service so you can be reassured that your pet will be cared for day and night by familiar faces. From all at Arun Veterinary Group, have a very Merry Christmas!

Worm infestations and your dog: out of sight and out of mind?
W
orm infestation is a common but often unseen problem in dogs. Over 10 types of parasitic worm are able to infect dogs in the UK and most dogs are exposed to and likely to carry a worm burden at some point. Low burden causes few outward signs but the risk of infection gives a good reason for effective worm control. Increased international travel gives more reason than ever to keep your dog protected.
Animals pick up worm infections in many ways. Most infection comes from the environment 10 per cent of soil samples in public parks can be positive for round worms. Roundworm eggs are particularly resistant and can remain infective for years. Infection occurs via ingestion of eggs The two major groups of dog worms include: Roundworms -. The majority of puppies become infected before birth with roundworms. The Toxocara roundworm passes from the bitch to her puppies in the womb as well as via her milk. Signs of infection range from poor growth and coat condition, to stomach upsets and severe disease, even death, especially in young puppies. Other dog roundworms also infect the skin and small bowel (hookworms), large bowel (whipworms), lungs (lungworms) and even heart and blood vessels (heartworms). Tapeworms - Can be caught from
eating contaminated meat or infected fleas or lice during grooming. Signs vary from mild irritation as live tapeworm segments are passed in faeces to anaemia and weight loss with larger burdens. Animals pick up worm infection in many ways. Most infection comes from the environment - 10 per cent of soil samples in public parks can be positive for roundworms. Roundworm eggs are particularly resistant and can remain infective for years. Infection occurs via ingestion of eggs. Hookworm larvae can burrow into the skin and tapeworms are picked up through eating fleas when grooming or from eating or scavenging raw meat, rodents or rabbits. Lungworms are picked up by eating the intermediate host – a slug or snail. Collecting dog faeces and regular worming are major factors which will reduce the risk of passing on infection to other dogs. You may not be able to tell if your dog is infected. Signs may be absent or mild if your dog is fit and healthy but can become more significant in young or unwell dogs or those with a large parasitic burden. It is important to worm your dog even if you cannot see external signs as damage may be occurring on the inside. Human infection is a potential risk with several worms affecting dogs. Generally, children have increased risk of infection often with closer dog and environmental contact and greater susceptibility to infection. Once infected, Toxocara larvae migrate causing damage to the organs they travel through, with the eye being particularly susceptible. Tapeworm disease in humans involves tapeworm larvae causing cysts in the body. An important tapeworm from the human health aspect is Echinococcus. One form in the UK (E.granulosus) occurs most commonly in upland sheep areas in the UK. E.multilocularis is an even more serious threat to human health. Whilst currently absent in the UK, it does occur in mainland Europe. Infected humans can get severe disease with 95% risk of death if untreated. Animals travelling under the PETS travel scheme are wormed for this before return into the UK. For more information talk to your vet.

Hawks gain revenge over Crusaders Horsham cruise through to Sussex Cup semi-final
Hawks U16 team gained revenge over Crawley Crusaders U16 Crawley Crusaders 43 – 66 U16 Horsham Hawks Youth Basketball Horsham Hawks U16 team gained revenge over Crawley Crusaders to make amends for their home defeat earlier in the season. Despite Hawks missing nearly half their squad, the front 5 started the game with high intensity and the defence completely shut out Crusaders for the first 8 minutes. Josh Raby led the way with outstanding ball hustling forcing several turnovers against the home team. Kieran Lee opened with back to back outside shots and was soon followed on the score sheet by Will Putner finding space inside to convert. Good work from their team mates with excellent control of the ball en-
sured Hawks were rampant leading 15 nil after 7 minutes. The excellent start allowed the bench to be spun with George Makin, Teagen Holden, Tommy Strange and Mo Bangura all getting early court time and maintaining the good start Hawks had achieved. Leading by 12 going into the second quarter, Hawks continued where they left off with Sam Devine grabbing back to back buckets. George Makin was then on the end of an outstanding fast break before Will Putner drilled 3 consecutive baskets. With 8 seconds remaining in the half, Mo Bangura produced a dazzling reverse dribble before hitting from near the half way line just as the buzzer sounded and Hawks in complete control 34-15. Coach Nick Probin used the third quarter to practice Hawks set plays
which his team put to good effect leaving the Crusaders defence in bemusement with the quality of Hawks passing and movement. James Maclean, Putner, Bangura and Makin all executed inside as the Crawley team struggled to slow the rate of scoring. The period ended with Hawks up a commanding 53-31 looking to protect their margin of victory in the final 10 minutes. Despite the comfortable lead the team restricted Crusaders to 12 points in the final period. The team were particularly pleased that the final score of the game came with a great 3 point shot from 13 year old Tommy Strange to ensure Hawks finished comfortable winners 66-43. Hawks U16 team and points scored: Will Putner 31, Kieran Lee 9, Mo Bangura 7, Sam Devine 6, George Makin 6, Tommy Strange 3, Josh Raby 2, James Maclean 2, Teagen Holden.

and fearless attacking basketball to put together a 10-0 run led by Josh Lea-Clayton and Josh Tavolieri with Horsham taking a narrow 15-13 advantage to close the first quarter. Two strong drives to the basket from Horsham’s Fin Bennett extended the Hawks lead to 19-15 to start the second quarter before Crawley fought back with six unanswered points of their own to go ahead 21-19. A huge 13-5 Hawks run then threatened to blow the game open with Lea-Clayton and Bennett adding to their totals while Amy Willcox sank a long range three pointer. A determined Cagers
team however refused to quit and finished the half with five straight points cutting the deficit to 32-30. Crawley’s momentum continued into the second half as they regained the lead at 40-38 before back to back three point baskets from Horsham’s Antonio Lozzi put the visitors narrowly back in front. With the game tied at 53-53 and three minutes remaining, Horsham demonstrated great composure with strong defensive pressure and clinical execution from Lea-Clayton and Lozzi to go ahead 58-56 inside the final minute of the game. With just seven seconds remaining and a slender two point deficit Crawley had a final chance to send the game into overtime or take the lead but a Hawks steal courtesy of Harry Rose and subsequent Crawley foul with one second remaining put Lozzi on the free throw line where he calmly converted both shots to seal a 60-56 Horsham victory. Hawks U13 team and individual points scored: Josh Lea-Clayton 17, Antonio Lozzi 13, Fin Bennet 13, Josh Tavolieri 12, Amy Willcox 3, Harry Rose 2, Charlotte Willcox, Meghan Stevens, James Lowe, Miguel Venturini, Oliver Brooker.
Emma Shingles scored in Horsham's cup win Saturday December 12 - Sussex Cup Quarter Final Burgess Hill Ladies 1st XI 0 - 2 Horsham 1st XI Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham overcame an early start at Burgess Hill to breeze through to another semi final in the Sussex Cup with a confident win. The two first half Horsham goals came from straight strikes from short corners, Emma Shingles (former captain Emma Whipps) and Charlotte “CJ” White doing the damage, Emma’s celebration being especially memorable. Twin sisters Elle Blakesley and Lauren Keefe en-
joy playing together and relished the win, Elle saying: “We played well as a team, putting Burgess Hill under pressure by earning plenty of short corners and they had only one real attack.” Lauren added: “They packed out the D in the second half, ultra defensively to prevent us from scoring again, but the result was never in doubt.” Before returning to league action on Saturday January 30 with a home game against leaders Surbiton, in the New Year Horsham play in the annual national indoor tournament at Whitgift School. Horsham’s Sussex Cup semi final opponents and the date and venue for the contest await confirmation from Sussex Hockey.

Horsham blown off course by bruising Purley Photos by Nick Evans
hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Saturday December 12 – South League Premier Div. 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 3 - 4 Purley Walcountians Horsham’s four game winning run ground to a halt in a howling gale with a disappointing defeat against lowly but brutally thrusting Purley Walcountians. Noah Chinn and skipper Duncan Howarth were unavailable following surgery and coach Dom Male was sidelined with his hand in plaster. Yet Horsham scored first – in the second minute - when Cirdec Atkinson launched a short corner into the top netting. Purley immediately responded, equalising from their second short corner. Jack Dean then notched up his tenth goal of the season, coolly slotting home a penalty flick. After Horsham hit the post Purley continued passing well and built up a wave of strikes, making it difficult to understand why they were tenth in the table with just two wins, especially when they levelled from an open play strike
Cirdec Atkinson opened the scoring against Purley and then went ahead, albeit fortuitously, to lead 3-2 at the break. Purley looked the better side in the second half but Horsham’s acting captain Freddie Campbell spearheaded several surging forays, one of which was latched onto by Richard Blakesley to even the honours.
But the defining moment came when Horsham keeper Andy Isaacs was sent off for a sliding tackle, Purley scoring the winning goal from the resulting set piece. Post match scars exhibited by Jack Dean and Joey Humphreys confirmed the bruising nature of the encounter.
Dom Cohen in action during the surprise defeat by Purley Team Manager Al Campbell said: “That must be Purley’s best showing of the season and not the result we wanted! We missed Dom Male organising our defence and couldn’t get the ball in the net in the second half when it just didn’t run for us.” Now half way through the season
Horsham, fourth with 20 points just two behind the chasing pack, return to league action on Saturday January 16, entertaining Woking at Broadbridge Heath. Meanwhile, on January 9 they have a cup semi final versus Lewes, venue to be confirmed.
Beckenham too strong for Horsham Aylesford end Borough’s unbeaten home run rugby Richard Ordidge - HRUFC
Saturday 12 December 12 - London & SE Division London 2 Beckenham 18 – 8 Horsham Not since the 1998-99 season have Horsham competed in a league as high as Beckenham but despite their recent resurgence the London side were again too strong for them. Horsham coach Nick Stocker was sanguine in defeat; “We haven’t become a bad side overnight. We’re just going through a bad patch. We’ve lost a bit of form and we will recover it. We’ve got good depth this season and I’m not afraid to make changes if necessary.” The floodlights were on from the outset in the gloom and the game was affected by the strong wind with flowing rugby at a premium. From the kick off the physicality of the Beckenham defence, which is one of the tightest in the league, was evident. When the Green and Whites were penalised for offside at the scrum the hosts calmly slotted the kick to secure an early lead. With Horsham playing into the elements they only made sporadic
breakouts and when Joe Wilde, Will Bell and Mike Watts linked up they briefly looked threatening but too often the attack was snuffed out by a combination of handling errors and strong tackling by the home side. Mills was putting more pace on his game with sniping runs from quickly taken penalties when the chance arose but it was Beckenham who scored next with a well worked try in the corner. Liam Yeates made an isolated break but with both sides receiving yellow cards it was Beckenham who finished the half on top, taking an 8-0 lead into the interval, wondering whether it would be enough as they faced the wind in the second half. “The third quarter turned it”, Stocker commented, “We went off the boil and made mistakes at key moments whereas they tightened up their game and scored a try”. Rather against expectations Beckenham made light of the adverse conditions and applied the early pressure after half time. Beckenham continued to attack with an effective rolling maul and Horsham were defending their try line for long periods. Beckenham incurred another yellow card giving Bell the chance to narrow the deficit from the half way line with the wind at his back but his attempt sailed narrowly wide. Johnny Ordidge made a strong break toward the Beckenham line
and when the hosts infringed at the breakdown, Bell made no mistake in front of the posts to narrow the deficit to 8-3 as Horsham fought to get back into the game temporarily against fourteen men. The revival however was short-lived and after strong runs by their winger and prop, Beckenham scored a try under the posts which was converted. When Beckenham scored another penalty to take their lead to 18-3 after 68 minutes, Horsham were running out of time to overhaul the deficit and their attacks became increasingly desperate. Horsham finally crossed the line in the final minutes when Richard Tredgett scored having linked with his brother Mike, who had made a powerful break off the back of the scrum. Stocker went on: “We did well to go into half time only 8-0 down playing into a tough wind but we didn’t execute effectively, gave up the ball too cheaply and our kicking game was not good enough. We created some good opportunities but coughed up the ball at critical times, but credit to Beckenham, they have a good scrum and driving maul and made it difficult for us.” Horsham’s next fixture is at home to Old Alleynians on 19 December. Horsham Team: Watts; Sheppard (N Bell), Ordidge, Yeates, Wilde; W Bell, Mills; Barber, Grantham-Hill (Price), Brady (Harcus); R Tredgett, Whiting; M Tredgett, Thompson, Gray.

Borough lost their unbeaten home record to Aylesford Saturday December 12 – London 3 South East Pulborough 5 - 17 Aylesford Bulls Rugby Martin Read – Sports Reporter Pulborough finished a very tough run of games against the top four sides with a defeat – their first home loss of the season – against second placed promotion chasing Aylesford Bulls. As expected, the Kent side came with a strong side, but Borough were by no means disgraced. Unusually refereed by a lady official, the game was played in gale force conditions. The visitors led 12 nil at the break but honours were shared in the second half after Borough left
winger Ewan Calloway was given room to cut in to get over the try line. Head Coach Clayton Saunders told the District Post: “We’ve been up against the strongest opposition for the last month and did exceptionally well to beat Bromley. We were almost at full strength against Aylesford and could have opened them up a bit if we’d been able to get the ball out wider, but they did enough to win. Park House are on a par with us so if we can take something approaching our top team over to Kent tomorrow (Saturday December 19) in our last game before the Christmas and New Year break then I’m hopeful that we’ll pull off our first away win.” Park House, heavily beaten last week by Eastbourne, are fifth, one place above Borough.

Hornets go top after defeating battling Hassocks

Saturday December 12 – SCFL Premier Division Horsham 2 – 1 Hassocks
Striker Terry Dodd was starved of any service
Horsham were pushed all the way by a Hassocks team that played above their lowly league position. Two first half goals from Evan Archibald, after the visitors had taken an early lead, gave the Hornets the three points that put them back to the top of the table. In addition the match saw the return of injured pair Darren Boswell and Kevin Keehan who both claimed a place on the bench as did late arrival Mark Knee who was replaced in the team by Jack Rowe-Hurst making it his first ever start for the Hornets. The opening quarter of an hour set the tone of the match as far as Horsham’s performance was concerned,
Man of the match Kieron Pamment beats a Hassocks defender a lot of huff and puff but little creative play, leaving striker Terry Dodd with little or no service throughout. The visitors then took a surprise lead in the sixteenth minute after a poor pass from Charlie Farmer put Ashley Jones in trouble from where the Horsham man lost the ball to Bradley Bant who crossed for James Westlake to beat keeper’ Gareth Williams for 0-1. Just a minute later ex Hornet Michael Death could have made things far worse for his former side when he blasted a first time effort over the bar. With visiting keeper’ Harris previously unworried by any Horsham attempts it came as a shock when just three minutes later Horsham equalised. Pamment’s cross was deflected to Archibald who stretched out a leg to wrong foot Harris and bring the scores level. Archibald, buoyed by the goal, nearly grabbed his second just minutes later but Harris got the better of the Horsham forward and snubbed out the danger. An incident between Hassock’s Dan Jacques and Kieron Pamment in which the visiting defender appeared
to stamp on Pamment led to some ugly scenes that saw yellow cards for Jacques and also for Ashley Marsh and Joe Shelley who clashed over the incident. Three minutes before the break however Archibald, following a fine solo run and finish, did grab his second of the match that saw his side go into the break with the 2-1 advantage that they would hold until the end. The second half was a rather flat affair; both sides did have efforts on goal and chances to add to the scoreline but all to no avail and the referee’s final whistle signalled with some relief for the home side a hard earned three points. With Eastbourne Town in FA Vase action – they lost 3-2 at home – the three points propelled Horsham back to the top of the division ahead of the testing Christmas and New Year series of local matches. Horsham Team: Williams, Hunt, Duncan, Martin, Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Archibald, Dodd, Pamment, Rowe-Hurst. Subs: Lewis, Boswell, Keehan, Knee, Storrie.
Heath record seventh win Farlington excel in a variety of sports in the last eight games Junior Sport
Saturday December 12 – SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 5 - 1 Wick & Barnham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor The very soggy playing surface at the Leisure Centre passed a late morning pitch inspection allowing Heath to attempt to continue their recent good form and Wick & Barnham, who have won their last three away games including a 4-2 victory over leaders Eastbourne Town, to attempt to continue theirs. Heath had the strong wind at their backs in the first half and took full advantage of it. Jake Holmes opened the scoring after 6 minutes with a superb half volley following an Andy Waddingham cross field pass. Three minutes later it was 2-0 when after Ollie Moore’s goal bound effort was blocked the ball came out to Stuart Chester who curled a left foot shot wide of keeper’ Billy Nash. Wick & Barnham responded straight from the restart when Michael Frangou met a right wing cross for an easy tap-in from close range to reduce the deficit. Heath regained their two goal lead
in the 12th minute through Stuart Chester’s second of the game and five minutes later Rob Godfrey made it 4-1 to put Heath in a comfortable position. Ben Gray did fire just wide for the visitors but Heath continued to have the better of it with Moore, Flack and Chester all going close to stretching their sides advantage. After such an action packed first half the second period had a lot to live up to, unfortunately the remainder of the match failed to reach the heights of the previous 45 minutes. Wick, now playing with the wind behind them, did have a chance after 70 minutes when Danny Towers headed over when he probably should have at least hit the target. In the 85th minute an off the ball incident resulted in two red cards, Scott Towers for Wick and Heath’s Dom Ozga; the latter had only been on the field for 11 minutes before the referee signalled his exit. Heath completed the scoring with 3 minutes left on the clock when Jake Legrange played in Ollie Moore who ran through and chipped over the advancing Nash for 4-1. Heath Team: M.Chester, Wicking (Ozga 74), Robinson, Howard, Flack, Chester, Waddingham, Godfrey, Moore, Holmes, Legrange.
As 2015 nears its end, Farlington School can look back with a lot of pride at the sporting achievements of its students. Issy Hayes, Amelia Eltham, Amelia Wright, Lilly Cherriman, Gaby Eltham, Gemma Cumber and Lauren Pedel were all in the medals at the Sussex Counties Winter Swimming Championships with Issy picking up an incredible 10 individual medals and top girl in her age category. Anna Wilson, who is ranked best 12 year old female diver in the country, competed at the White Rose 2015 diving competition and finished up as the winning finalist, scoring two 9.5 marks from the judges in the process. Honesty South won her age group in the regional gymnastics competition in the level 3 category, making her Regional and Sussex Champion. Katie Bedwin and her horse, Layla, came 3rd in a 2-day, 100-mile endurance race across the Black Mountains in Wales and was the youngest competitor by 20 years. Issy Hayes came 3rd at the world’s largest children's triathlon at Hever Castle and won the Crowborough Triathlon Fencer Eleanor Harvie trained in Hungary with other top international fencers. In the women’s épée
Farlington Gymnast Honesty South competition, she was knocked out by the eventual winner, finishing 17th overall. Sophie Kitson won the U14 and U16 girls’ singles at her club tournament and represented her club in the Sussex League, in both the girls’ and ladies’ teams. Finally Gemma Cumber has had outstanding results in open water swimming: winning the Bell Water
and the River Arun Festival (women and junior categories); coming 4th in the juniors at the Eastbourne Sea 2k event and winning the juniors section (2nd in women’s) at the River Adur event. With such a talented group of girls the school and its array of budding sports stars will be looking to achieve greater success in the coming year.

Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter Horsham YMCA bounced back from successive Premier Division defeats in some style on Saturday, as they beat bottom of the table St Francis Rangers 15-0 at the Colwell Ground. The thrashing was the struggling hosts’ heaviest loss of the season so far, and heaped further misery on a winless Rangers side that have scored just once in nineteen league games. Visitors’ debutant Phil Johnson made the perfect start to life as a YM player following his move from Burgess Hill Town this week, with four well taken goals that included a first half hat-trick. Defender Dan Evans and striker Nick Sullivan both netted a hat-trick a piece, with the former’s three strikes all coming from the
New signing Phil Johnson (No.10) scores for YM penalty spot, Dean Wright grabbed a brace, whilst further efforts from Matt Crane, Anthony Hibbert and Dave Brown completed the rout. YM assistant manager, Dean Potter, commented: “Every single one of the players was superb and I’m delighted. Before the game you look at St Francis’
record and you say to the players that the main thing is three points. What I was proud and pleased with was that we kept our discipline. We played for the full ninety minutes. We won 15-0, but it could have been another ten, and I’m not being horrible, with the missed chances we had. Whoever you play
Nick Sullivan scores as the static St Francis defence looks on against, when you’ve lost two games on the trot, you need to win straight away if you can, just to get that winning feeling back again. If you go a long time without winning a game, suddenly the morale can start to go. We needed this win. Whoever you play against, to win 15-0 takes a lot and some real class and
the players have been that today, right from the warm up. We were very professional and disciplined.” YM Team: Fox, D. Sullivan (Carden 65) Crane (Pollard 70), Gathern, Evans, Hibbert, Gedling, Brown, Johnson (Donaldson 65) Wright, N. Sullivan. Unused subs: Gannon, Dugdale.
Rivalries to be tested in Xmas fixtures Horsham Hockey elated Southern Combination Football League Premier by Alexandra’s call up Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor
Tomorrow, Saturday December 19, sees the start of a busy period of local derbies for the four highest ranked of our local football clubs. Over the Christmas and New Year period Horsham FC, Horsham YMCA FC, Broadbridge Heath FC and Loxwood FC will all play each other in Southern County Football League fixtures with all four clubs competing for honours this season in the Premier Division. Broadbridge Heath and Loxwood currently sit in mid table safety – the bottom three sides of Hailsham, East Preston and St Francis are well adrift of the others already – and both will be looking to gather points for a push into play off places, and of course to steal some local bragging rights. For Horsham YMCA it will be a chance to move into the top two, they currently sit in fifth place a few points short of league leaders and tenants Horsham who themselves will be looking to collect a good haul of points from their local rivals over Christmas to help them live up to the label they carry of league championship favourites. Whatever allegiances you have, or do not have, towards our local clubs it will be a fantastic time to get some fresh air and watch some highly competitive football as an alternative to sitting through another showing of an old movie. All the clubs will make you most welcome; the Christmas and New Year fixtures for our local clubs are listed below. Saturday December 19 Broadbridge Heath v Horsham –

Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham Hockey Club are delighted with 15 year old Warnham girl Alexandra Malzer’s selection for England Hockey’s Futures Cup in Cannock. The selection confirms Alexandra’s identification as a talented player and the round robin tournament included training days and competitive matches against regional age group teams, especially designed to provide firsthand experience of an international style tournament. Defender and midfielder Alexandra from Ardingly College was Vice Captain of Saxon Tigers U16 who beat their contemporaries Wessex Leopards, Pennine Pumas and Mercia Lynx. And, as a result of her assessment at Cannock Alexandra was called up to the National Hockey Centre at Lilleshall, Shropshire for further coaching and examination. Alexandra comes from a sporting family, her twin Isabel plays in the same regional hockey team, and they are tennis partners and enjoy netball, too. Alexandra has also played county football and basketball but now concentrates on hockey, telling the District Post: “It was a brilliant opportunity playing in the Futures Cup. I loved the camaraderie and made so many like minded friends. It was an amazing experience – unforgettable! Lilleshall was tough but positive, requiring lots of commitment from me and the family to get me through the assess-
Alexandra Malzer is delighted with her call up ment process.” Proud mother Sarah added: “Alexandra played a little hockey at Primary School and then started competitively when she was 11. She has worked really hard to earn national attention and if she keeps progressing as I think she will then I look forward to seeing her playing for England U16 next year!”
