Dozens caught in drink-drive blitz face court in New Year phil dennett News Editor
Drivers are facing a New Year in court after dozens of them were caught in a drinks and drugs road blitz. Motorists are risking being over the drinks limit despite warnings of police campaigns, according to arrest figures in a pre-Christmas blitz. More than 100 motorists had been arrested in Sussex since the Christmas 2015 crackdown on drink and drug-driving was launched on December 1. A total of 102 arrests had been made in West and East Sussex as part of Operation Dragonfly, launched by Surrey and Sussex Police, up to the end of Wednesday of last week. Of these, 50 have been charged. It is likely the numbers will increase before the
end of the Christmas period. Among those arrested so far is Richard May, 65, retired, of Bishopric, Horsham, was arrested at Crawley Police Station on December 11 and charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis. He is due to appear before Crawley Magistrates' Court on January 7. Amy Downes, 25, a sales assistant, of Highwood Crescent, Horsham, was arrested in Worthing Road, Southwater, on December 12 and charged with having 78mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system. She is due to appear before Crawley Magistrates' Court on January 15. Juliet Adsett, 34, a youth worker, of Field End, Storrington, was arrested on the A27 at Beddingham on December 12 and charged with having 96mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system. She is due to appear before Brighton Magistrates' Court on January 11. Arlene Mhandu, 31, a commu-
nity worker, of Guildford Road in Chertsey, Surrey, was arrested in Bohemia Road, Hastings, on December 12 and charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis. She is due to appear before Hastings Magistrates' Court on December 30. There have also been arrests for suspected drug-driving offences. People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug driving or visithttp://www. operationcrackdown.co.uk/. You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 (http://www.crimestoppers-uk. org/). To keep up to date with officers looking for drink or drug drivers, follow #opdragonfly on Twitter. If you know someone is driving while over the limit or after taking drugs call 999. Details of the arrests have been publicised by police as a deterrent as part of the campaign.

Three people who have devoted 25 years each to providing housing have been rewarded for their dedication. The trio of Horsham-based workers celebrated an impressive milestone after they were recognised for more than 25 years of long service to Southern Housing Group, one of the south east of England’s largest housing associations. The recognition took place at its annual staff long service awards, which involved more than 100 people who have offered a combined total of almost 1,000 years’ service to the Group. The longest serving employees recognised at the awards included Horsham-based Paul Cotton, head of home management, Liz Hills, regional development manager and Janine Murnane, customer services advisor who have all worked for the Group for 25 years. Paul said: “My job involves co-ordinating our housing service, ensuring we let our homes to those in need and that the services we provide are valued. tomers over the years and it’s clear they appreciate the work we do”. Liz Hills said: “Over the last 25 years I am proud to have worked on a number of new developments and regeneration projects that have provided much needed homes across the south east of England. “Southern Housing Group is a great organisation to work for because it reinvests its profits into building new homes and provides support to residents and communities.” Chief Executive Tom Dacey said: “The housing sector is facing unprecedented changes and we are more passionate than ever to build loyalty and make Southern Housing Group a great place to work. “Our business relies on the skills and experience of talented employees who provide our customers with exceptional service day in and day out. “This annual event is a great opportunity to show our appreciation for our employees and to show just how much we value all the hard work, dedication and loyalty they have shown over the years.” Liz and Paul are pictured.

Gentleman Jimmy Hill remembered
Jimmy Hill
Jimmy, far right, at Ralph’s book launch
District Post news editor Phil Dennett was among those who paid tribute this week to football legend Jimmy Hill, who died on Saturday at the age of 87 after living with Alzheimer’s disease since 2008. Jimmy lived just outside the village of Hurstpierpoint, near Henfield, with his wife and author Bryony until he had to be admitted into care because of his condition. Phil, 65, from Burgess Hill, has interviewed him several times in his journalistic career. When Phil launched a book “Knight of the Whistle” about Horsham referee Ralph Tarratt, who lived in later life at Southwater, to raise money for St

Catherine’s Hospice Jimmy wrote a forward for it. He later launched the book at the Horsham care home where Ralph was living, just before Ralph died. Phil said: “Obviously Jimmy is remembered by millions as former footballer, campaigning players’ union leader, successful manager, club chairman and high-profile football presenter. “Yet the thing I remember about him was that he was, certainly in my dealings with him, a gentleman with old-fashioned manners. He was no pushover, but he was extremely polite and showed great courtesy. “When I asked him to launch the

book about Ralph in Horsham he agreed instantly and drove himself up to the town to perform the ceremony. Because of his help were able to raise several thousand pounds for St Catherine’s Hospice. Ralph, who was in fast-failing health, wanted the book published before he died to raise money for St Catherine’s because he had lost wives to cancer. “But there was more tragedy when the man who started it, Jeremy Gambrill, also died from cancer with the book only part finished. Once I had completed it I was delighted Jimmy generously gave us all a huge boost. “Sadly Ralph, who was in his 90s,

very frail and really clinging on to life to see the book launched, died very soon after the book went on sale. But I shall never forget the look of delight on Ralph’s face when Jimmy walked into the room on that launch day. “Jimmy had seen the hard side of football, both on the pitch and in boardroom politics, but seemed in love with and fascinated by the game for many years. “Out of the limelight, Jimmy helped raise many thousands of pounds for charity, including his golf exploits. He was a man who once met was never forgotten for all the best reasons as far I was concerned.” Jimmy played nearly 300 games for Fulham FC, was a campaigning chairman of the Professional Footballers Association, successful pioneering manager and chairman of Coventry City FC and a famous BBC soccer pundit, including hosting Match of the Day for huge television audiences. In a statement last weekend, his agent, Jane Morgan, said: "It is with great sadness that his wife Bryony Hill and the children of Jimmy Hill have announced that Jimmy passed away peacefully aged 87 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Bryony was beside him." Bryony told Phil Dennett: “I am overwhelmed by the tributes and affection that are coming in from all corners of the world. He would have been so chuffed.”

The screening that could save lives Kids take on Reindeer Run Pupils dressed as a familiar Christmas animal in the name of charity. The youngsters at Weald School, Billingshurst took part in the colourful Reindeeer Run. All the proceeds from the run will go to help the Chestnut Tree House charity. Chestnut Tree House is the children’s hospice for East and West Sussex and South East Hampshire and cares for 300 children and young adults from 0-19 years of age with progressive life-shortening conditions.
Manager Dale Whitford (L) with Billingshurst Lions president Ken Johnson at Billingshurst Leisure Centre Fundraising or a heart screening day which saw more than 100 teenagers tested for potentially fatal conditions has been boosted by a donation from Lions. President of Billingshurst Lions Ken Johnson handed over a cheque for £500 to help fund the heart testing day, which was held for pupils of The Weald School. A team of trained staff from the charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) attended the screening day at Billingshurst Leisure Centre in September. Nursing staff, physiologists and a senior cardiologist were on site to go through the results of electrocardio-
gram and ultrasound tests with each pupil. The screening detects certain heart defects that can cause sudden death. Statistics show 12 apparently fit and healthy young people aged from 14 to 35 die from undiagnosed heart defects in the UK every week. Screening is currently the only way to detect these conditions, but at present only a few professional sports bodies and some private schools have introduced regular screening. The event was the first of its kind in the area. Mr Johnson said: “Young people of the Weald are our future. “The Lions Club saw this exercise
as a means of supporting the heart screening programmes and, hopefully, of protecting our local young people. We were pleased to do so.” Billingshurst Leisure Centre staff raised funds to pay for the screening. Manager Dale Whitford said: “We were really pleased to host the heart checks carried out by CRY. “Our staff have worked really hard to raise money for the day and fundraising is ongoing. “It would be great to think we could screen more young people in future and we’re hoping to hold another screening day sometime next year, which would be open to all young people.”

Tree of Light services remember Collyer’s sing in Christmas our loved ones this Christmas
Tree of Light services have been held by St Catherine’s Hospice at various churches to remember loved ones who have been lost. Local residents attended a service at Trafalgar Road Baptist Church and St Mary’s Church, both in Hor-

death and bereavement within the community. People also attended a service at Trinity United Reformed Church, Billingshurst. Pictured are scenes from the services.
The true Christmas spirit rang out loud at St Mary’s Parish Church in Horsham, when it hosted the Collyer’s college annual Christmas Concert. The packed congregation enjoyed an evening of festive music and readings by students and staff. On arrival soloists Beth Adams and Delyth Simons, with a brass ensemble and the congregation, performed ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ and ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’. All then enjoyed a performance of ‘Lully, Lulla and Lullay’, from a vocal quartet of Emily Batchelor, Elizabeth Britten, Henry Purser and Louis Timperley. Arthur Mui’s Piano solo of Deuxieme Scherzo was followed by the Congregation and Brass Ensemble’s ‘The First Noel’. The Collyer’s Choir sang ‘Carol of the Bells’, ‘The Lamb’, ‘White Christmas’ and ‘Silent Night’. A vocal septet of Delyth Simons, Beth Adams, Vicky Robertson, Eric
White, Charlie Ghazi, Thea Elvin and Max Higdon) performed ‘White Winter Hymnal’. Throughout the evening the audience heard readings from Stephen Ottley, Holly Schofield and Principal Sally Bromley. As the evening drew to a close, three members of the Collyer’s String Quartet, Emily Batchelor, Clare Packham and Thea Elvin, performed Haydn’s Presto, Minuet and Trio in B flat before the Congregation with Brass Ensemble came together for a rousing ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’. The Big Band featuring Madeleine Snowdon on vocals and directed by Mike Lavelle rounded-off a special night with superb performances of popular classics including ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’, ‘In the Mood’ and ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’. Some of the performers are pictured. Pictures by Dom Rees, student photographer.

The girls at Farlington School have entered into the spirit of Christmas by raising money for goodcauses, participating in carol services and delivering chocolates to the elderly in the community. Music has also featured strongly in celebrations this year as choirs have sung at Wickhurst Green and Crawley town centre. The Senior School girls have donated and delivered more than 100 boxes of chocolates, some to Age UK’s Lavinia House in Horsham and others to Clemsfold House Care Home in Broadbridge Heath where the girls also sang carols. The remaining boxes have been given to the Salvation Army to distribute. In another fund-raiser the girls left their school shoes at home and wore slippers to class. The fund-

raising initiative, run by Shelter, aims to help the 100,000 children in Britain who wake up on Christmas morning without a home. This raised nearly £400. In another attraction, the Christmas story was performed by Nursery, Reception, Prep 1 and 2 children. A varied and poetic Christingle Service at St Mary’s Church in Horsham, brought to life the legend of Babouska’s journey to search for the newborn King. More than £380 was raised from the collection for Barnardo’s. The Senior Carol Service was also held at St Mary’s Church where the congregation enjoyed music played by some of the School’s musical groups - the Clarinet Quartet, Strood Consort, Flute Choir and Telemann Strings
A retiring collection raised more than £1000 for Shooting Star Chase, the children’s hospice. On the penultimate day of term, girls in the reception class toured the school singing carols to the staff and senior girls. For Christmas lunch for girls and staff dressed in Christmas mufti, served by headmistress Louise Higson and assistant headmistress Mandy Higgs. Pictured are some of the activities. No messing for nature Wendy awarded for work with deaf conservation volunteers
Conservation volunteers have been given a non-stick boost in their offroad work. They use four-wheel drive to reach some nature reserves that are out of the way in their work for the Sussex Wildlife Trust. Caffyns motor dealers have helped the Trust by giving them a generous discount on a sturdy Defender 110XS Land Rover. The vehicle will be used daily to take up to six volunteers to its nature reserves all over the county to carry out vital conservation work. The Trust says that without volunteer support, this work would cost the Sussex Wildlife Trust tens of thousands of pounds in fees to contractors each year. Volunteer support is vital to maintain and safeguard habitats and the
wildlife living on nature reserves. The Land Rover’s special features include a ceramic paint coating which prevents mud and grime sticking to the vehicle. The last task of a hard physical day working on the reserves is to wash the vehicle which can now be rinsed clean in a matter of moments. Alex Collins from the Sussex Wildlife Trusts reserves team said: “Having a capable off road vehicle means we can work more efficiently and move teams of volunteers to previously inaccessible areas on our nature reserves.’ To find out more about volunteering with the Sussex Wildlife Trust please ring 01273 497562 or email:lizfrancis@sussexwt.org.uk The new vehicle is pictured with volunteers.
Youngsters living with deafness are inspired in sport by a Henfield teacher who has won a national award for her work. Wendy Russell ensured special sign language was created for deaf hockey players and her system is being introduced nationally. Because of her outstanding work Wendy, Steyning Grammar School PE Teacher and Hockey Coach, is now the holder of the ‘Disability Coach of the Year’ title from Sports Coach UK Awards in Manchester. The awards honour sports coaches and organisations demonstrating outstanding success over the last 12 months, and are seen as one of the most prestigious within the coaching community. This award has been won for revolutionising the way deaf or hard of hearing young people take part in hockey by creating a hockey-specific sign language. This came after discovering that only 11.5% of deaf young people do sport outside of Physical Education. The reason many gave for this was because they had to go to hearing clubs, and a lot of them felt isolated because they needed extra support; and also that people didn’t know how to interact with them. Wendy wanted to set up a hockey club that was for deaf people only so that they could feel included and safe within that environment, so applied for and gained funding to run a Deaf Hockey
Sportivate project in Brighton. This is the first deaf hockey club in Great Britain. In order to communicate with the youngsters a new hockey-specific sign language was developed. Wendy explained: “The only sign I could find was for naming the actual sport hockey, so I needed to create 30 others that would allow me quickly to not only explain what we were doing and working on, but also how to give feedback to the players.” The new sign language has now been ratified by “Remark” and endorsed by the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS). It is now
being introduced by UK Deaf Sport, NDCS and England Hockey, and will be used across the country by teachers and participants. Wendy has also won the Sussex Sports Award Sportivate Project of the Year and was shortlisted in the top five for the ‘Community Award’ in The Sunday Times and Sky Sports News Sportswoman of the Year Awards. Wendy is an England Hockey Level 2 coach and also a regional hockey coach as well as an Active Sussex coach mentor and a Project 500 ambassador for Sussex. Wendy is pictured.

Local churches come together to celebrate Christmas
Horsham rang out with the sounds of Christmas when churches came together to stage a festive event. The spirit and sights of the season were also highlighted in an entertaining programme brought to together by groups in the Churches Together organisation. Choirs sang carols, bands played and people joined in a carol service in an event that provided a good time for people of all ages and also reflected the religious element of the Christmas celebration. To cap off the successful occasion the sky was lit by a display by Aurora Fireworks, based at Wisbor-
ough Green, who were carrying out the duties for the their second year, having provided displays at other local events during the year. Churches Together has more 30 churches from Horsham and the local area, and they pooled their resources together to organise the annual event, which included stalls manned by volunteers from local groups. This year the event had the benefit temperature-wise of one of the mildest Decembers on record. The District Post features some of the seasonal sights from the celebration for readers to enjoy.

Jenna shares pictures of her meals on the social networking site to help inspire others who are also losing weight and in turn has used other peoples meal ideas to help her lose nearly 4 stone in just four months. "I have struggled with my weight from a young age", says Jenna "and always felt the odd one out next to my friends and sisters on nights out and used to avoid the cameras for their selfie moments, I would be the one behind the camera snap-

Hear! Hear! For new Haven service A first class Christmas to all our postal workers
A centre recently re-opened after refurbishment will have an extra facility in 2016 Day activities, classes and social care for people aged 55+ are all under one roof for the first time in Henfield after the official opening of the Haven. The new centre is open five days a week with services including, support for people with dementia, support for carers , therapies such as osteopathy, activities and classes including, yoga, crafts and music and a cafe. And West Sussex County Council has announced that a hearing clinic will open in the centre next year and will also offer support with hearing aids. The Haven is a new venture run by
a newly formed Community Interest Company, Henfield Social Enterprise. At the opening, chairman Digby Stephenson said: “Today marks a very significant milestone for the Haven and the community of Henfield. It marks the end of one long journey that started when West Sussex County Council announced that the day care centre was earmarked for closure. Thanks to huge support, funding and effort from many organisations, individuals and our wonderful volunteers, we can now start another journey of delivering first class care and involvement for Henfield and the surrounding areas.” The building was formally Henfield Day Centre and has been handed over
to the community by West Sussex County Council. Work to upgrade the building has been carried out over the past few months, much of it by volunteers. Peter Catchpole, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “This is a great example of the community taking on the running of an important local facility to guarantee its future.” Sussex charity Impact Initiatives has taken the lead in providing services, including a continuation of the current dementia service. More than 80 local volunteers have signed up to support the centre. To find out more about The Haven call 01273 494747.
Have your say in policing and crime Recruitment has now opened for 1425 year olds from Sussex who have an interest in joining the Sussex Youth Commission in 2016. Building on the success of the last two years, the commission wants to continue to give young people from across the county an opportunity to have a voice on policing and crime. Commenting on the recruitment launch, Mrs Bourne said: "I am delighted that I am able to offer another group of young people a unique opportunity to get involved in the issues that matter most to them. "The SYC enables young people to become part of the solution to tackling crime in their area, rather than being seen as part of the problem. I would encourage as many young people as possible to apply.” Chiz Nwaosu, 22, a member of the Sussex Youth Commission said: "I got involved with the Youth Commission as I felt it was a good platform for young people to voice their opinions about policing, which is an issue that can affect their lives. I really enjoyed the experience, especially meeting a wide range of people and getting a behind the scenes look at police work. This is an excellent opportunity for young people to develop their skills and gain hands-on experience working on a project which will make a real difference. We are proactively seeking applications from young people with a wide range of life experiences, including those who have had direct experience of the Criminal Justice System as we want the Youth Commission to reflect a really diverse range of perspectives.

Hundreds of extra technology places Bailey crowned top dog for local students at Central Sussex
Students from Horsham attending college in Crawley will be using new technology facilities next summer. Development of Central Sussex College’s new Advance Technology Centre at Crawley has started and is expected to take about five months, providing more than 700 extra places for students. To celebrate the start the college’s principal Sarah Wright was joined by Henry Smith, MP for Crawley, Heather Binning from Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership, Steve Sawyer from Manor Royal Business Improvement District and Vic Allen, from Allen Wilson Group. Once completed the college says the centre will provide modern, in-
dustry standard learning environments and practical workshops for the next generation of individuals working or aspiring to work in the expanding engineering, technology and environmental technology sectors. The redevelopment and extension of an existing college site is expected to provide an additional 770 places for school leavers, apprentices and adult learners in areas associated with manufacturing, electronics, and specialist areas of environmental technology such as photovoltaic, solar thermal, biomass, wind turbine technology, thermography and insulation. The college says that In the Coast to Capital area high concentra-
tions of advanced manufacturing, engineering and environmental technology businesses make a significant economic impact and are growing. With growth comes a need for a larger, better skilled workforce, and the necessity to train more people in these emerging priority areas is vital to guarantee the long-term profitability of the region. Sarah Wright said: “We’re confident that the new facilities and training on offer will be much sought after as employers in the engineering and technology sector recognise the need to enhance the skills of their current and future workforces.” Pictured is a group celebrating the opening.
A dog from Broadbridge Heath has been crowned a champion fundraiser. RSPCA Sussex North branch is celebrating the success of Bailey, an Akita-Shepherd cross, who has been crowned the highest fundraiser at the RSPCA Big Walkies event, which was held in October at Southwater Country Park. The inaugural event is believed to have raised about £1,000 for the local RSPCA branch which covers Horsham, Crawley and Haywards Heath. Bailey was the top fundraiser, gaining sponsorship of more than £115. In appreciation of Bailey’s, and his family’s, support RSPCA Sussex North presented him with a doggy goody bag donated by RSPCA partnership clinic, Arthur Lodge Veterinary Surgery. Anita Marsland, chair of RSPCA Sussex North branch, said
“I am delighted that Bailey was the highest fundraiser for the branch at Big Walkies this year and to present him with a well deserved goody bag. Well done Bailey.” Bailey, four, was adopted from RSPCA Leybourne Animal Centre, in Kent, by Andrea Grounds and her husband John, from Broadbridge Heath.Andrea said: “Bailey joined our family when he was 18 months old after spending quite a lot of his early life at RSPCA Leybourne. He's a real character and we are so happy to have him with us.” “The whole family supports the RSPCA and my husband used to work there. We admire the work done by the inspectors and the dedicated staff and volunteers at the rescue and rehoming centres as well as the campaigning and lobbying work done at national level.” Bailey is pictured.

KalliKids wins Best Business Award Successful small local KalliKids was named winner of the Outstanding Entrepreneur at the 2015 Best Business Awards. The business harnesses parent power, by bringing together recommendations and up front checking, in one easy to use website. Karen Bach, who set up the Sussex based company three years ago, was recognised by the judges of the award, for turning a good idea into a thriving business. The company now has 37,000 social media followers, 28,000 parent members and works with more than 1,400 providers of children’s services. Commenting on the award to KalliKids, chairman of the judges for The Best Business Awards, said: “As a mother of two, Karen Bach was concerned about sending her children to activity centres, when she wasn’t quite sure if the organisers were properly qualified. Quick to spot a market, she realised that there was a need for professional accreditation. Karen has turned her idea into a thriving business and now has a database of 1,400 approved providers, and is embarking on a massive expansion programme. An accreditation scheme is great news for parents who are always delighted to get reassurance that they are sending their children to independently vetted organisations.” The BBAs pride themselves on having a large panel of over 20 independent expert judges, who select winners according to strict criteria for each category and sector.

The Best Business Awards are one of the UK’s highest profile awards and winning this accolade speaks volumes about the quality of an organisation. Owing to its high profile, the Awards attract a wide range of entries from across all sectors from large international PLCs and public sector organisations to dynamic and innovative SMEs. The winners all have one thing in common – they are truly excellent at what they do and KalliKids have proved this, by winning a Best Business Award. Upon winning the award, Karen Bach, Founder of KalliKids, who lives in Cowfold, said: “This is a great accolade and testament to the ongoing
hard work and commitment of everyone on the KalliKids team. “I came up with the idea for KalliKids after spotting a gap in the market. I was searching for tutors and sports clubs for my two daughters and felt there was no way of telling whether the provision was good or bad. There was a need for an industry standard. Some parents place more emphasis on recommendation, whereas others look at evidence. So I decided to combine the two.” For more information and to find out how to register your business for the next round of the Best Business Awards, visit http://www.bestbusinessawards.co.uk/index.asp
For this year’s Small Business Saturday, the local Branch of the Federation of Small Businesses highlighted two successful (and well known) independent small family businesses, that will celebrate 20 and 25 years, respectively, in 2016. FSB member, Beeches Buffet in Piries Place, will celebrate their 20 anniversary and are well known for their outside catering, as well as their coffee shop. They have provided the catering at the annual Microbiz, since that important event (for any local micro or potential micro-business) began. Beeches owner, Sue Brown, commented: “Beeches offers the personal approach to customer service, so we not only play a role as a retail outlet, but also a bringing together of the community; regular customers meet, become involved and enjoy their time with us. Over the years we have diversified our product range and approach to the market place and will continue to do so. Value for Money remains our watchword.” Owned by Vic Jannels and his son Dale, AToM, based in the Carfax, will be celebrating its 25th anniversary next year, a significant achievement for a firm in the mortgage sector, having survived two major downturns in the housing market. According to Vic Jannels: “We have steadfastly endeavoured to look at

Home ownership is the largest and most important investment our customers make and we seek to make the process as simple as possible for them. We do All Types of Mortgages, for all types of people, from the seemingly straightforward house purchase, through re-mortgages and assistance for those with less than perfect credit. Our offering also includes commercial mortgage lending and buy to let business.” Last week AToM won the award for being the Best Distributer of Residential Mortgages in the specialist market place. They have also just been notified that they are shortlisted for both Best Mortgage Broker (UK) and for Best Specialist Mortgage Distributer, at the Mortgage Strategy event in London, February 2016. The clear message from both of these successful small businesses, is that continued hard work, putting the customer first and offering a quality product that meets the customers needs, will support success. Beauty and the Beast is classic panto fun Davey pearson The District Post Director
So it's Christmas time again and with all the traditional goings on, the obligatory Panto visit hit the Pearson household last Friday. With four kids in tow, my wife and I could hardly contain our excitement (when I say I...) This year's festive treat is Beauty and The Beast at The Capitol Theatre in Horsham. Wrapped in coats, hats and scarfs, we braved the 16 degree weather and made it to our destination. Our seats were in the circle at the very top at the very back, nothing to do with me booking the tickets late, I just like a full panoramic view of the stage... ahem. As we sat, ready for commencement, a sudden burst of sound rang out across the auditorium: What was this? The Star Wars theme tune? Had my inner wishes come true? Had we booked the wrong tickets and were, in fact, about to witness the the masterpiece that is Star Wars: The Force Awakens? No, this was the first of many star wars related puns which would occur throughout the performance - hurrumph! The audience found it hilarious and I gave a reluctant titter. The cur-
tains lifted and we were off. I could see the kids' excited faces from the glow of their flashy, spiny, lighty things, which we'd purchased from the kiosk earlier. The opening scene began to tell the story of how the Beast became and within seconds we were gripped. We were then introduced to the cast, one by one, and the French town of Ors-Ham. Next, came a request to participate (as is the panto tradition) by shouting BONJOUR, every time a character said hello,
and WEE WEE, when D'Jon (played by Mike Goble) asked 'Are you alright, gang?' The kids found the latter, hilarious. It wasn't long before we were all screaming and shouting at the stage. All actors were great, with DC (played by Olly Pike) providing entertainment, with his star wars gags and high pitch voice, and the dame, Mademoiselle Renee Tasse De The (pronounced 'Tay', played by Alex Wadham) giving us, parents, the grown up humour. I won't say

too much about the half naked male dancers, but they all seemed like very nice chaps. In one scene, the Beast (played by Tom Senior) sang a sad solo piece very well, so much so, my four year old had a tear in her eye - a sure sign of approval! The dancing and singing was on point and the flame juggling and fire pyrotechnics gave the play a real west end flare... I thank you. A great evening was had by all and we look forward to next year's Aladdin.

Beauty and the Beast breaks pantomime record at The Capitol With just over a week to go until The Capitol’s pantomime, Beauty and the Beast, ends on January 3, Nick Mowat, General Manager, is thrilled to announce that the show has already become the most successful pantomime in the theatre's history. The previous record holder, Peter Pan staged in 2013 has already been overtaken. Nick said: “This magical family show full of love, laughter, singing and dancing, has really captured the hearts of everyone who has seen it. Our fantastic cast, including TV’s Andrew Hayden-Smith and Olly Pike from CBBC’s Trapped, are doing a wonderful job and the comedy, in the hands of Mike Goble, is proving to be incredibly popular. This new show, created especially for Horsham, has real heart and people have commented on how all the characters have their own story. So whilst there’s all the favourite panto elements, like slapstick, audience participation and song and dance, I think audiences have been taken on a proper journey with each character, thereby giving everyone just that bit more than they were expecting.”

Produced by leading children’s theatre team, Fiery Light, in partnership with licensor Entertainment One, this brand new show marks the seventh consecutive year of Peppa Pig live theatre tours (first tour in 2009) and the fourth Peppa Pig stage production in total. It’s a lovely day and Peppa is playing outside with her friends. Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig have got a surprise for her and her younger brother George, but no matter how hard they try, they cannot guess what it is. In Peppa Pig’s Surprise, audiences will enjoy interactive fun, games and, of course, surprises. This charming, colourful new show features new songs and new life-size puppets. The production promises to be the perfect theatre show for all pre-schoolers. Suitable for ages 3+. Currently one of the most popular shows on the UK and Ireland theatre
touring circuit, Fiery Light’s Peppa Pig live stage show experience, has now gone international, with a production running in Australia and another opening in the US in autumn 2015. There are also licensed productions of the show in Spain, Italy and Latin America Richard Lewis, once again, has adapted for stage, episodes from the Astley Baker Davies' hit TV show and will be directing, as has done for all three Peppa Pig live stage shows: Peppa Pig’s Party (2009 - 2011), Peppa Pig’s Treasure Hunt (2011 - 12) and Peppa Pig’s Big Splash (2013 - 2014). His most recent works include other Fiery Light top-selling children’s theatre productions: Octonauts Live (currently on tour) and Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom (first tour in 2012 and now back on tour again in 2015). Cast are Melanie Ann, Emma Grace Arends, Liam Farrow, Auriol Hatcher, Emma Hilts, Lauren Martin and David Sandham. New sing-along songs and mu-
sic will again be provided by BAFTA award-winning Mani Svavarsson. Matt Lewis is lyricist, Simon Scullion is designer, Matt Haskins is lighting designer, Helen Atkinson is sound designer and Andy Booth is music director. Richard Lewis commented: “It hardly seems like six years since we first started on the first Peppa Pig live stage show and we had no idea we’d now be working on our fourth touring theatre production. It’s been an incredible experience seeing the children’s reactions, not only in the UK but throughout the world and it just confirms that Peppa really is a worldwide phenomenon.” Performance Dates: January 27 (1pm & 4pm); 28 (10am & 1pm). Tickets: £17. Child: £15. Ages 12-24 months: £11.50, Family of Four: £60. Groups: 1 in 10 free. Premium seats: £21. Child: £19 Tickets can be purchased from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting www.hawth.co.uk.

Take to the kitchen this season
With the festive season now in full swing, restaurants and bars in West Sussex are enjoying their busiest time of year, but contemporary property layouts mean it has never been so tempting to host friends and family at home… In recent years, thanks to the likes of Nigella Lawson, Jamie Oliver and Tom Kerridge, an open plan layout with a beautiful kitchen, as seen on our favourite TV programmes, has come to be the most sought-after feature of a modern home. The kitchen has become not only the heart of the home, but also the stage from which to showcase one’s cookery skills. Beyond the kitchen, fluid open plan living spaces really come into their own in the presence of guests, so it’s no surprise people are increasingly choosing to celebrate in the comfort of their home rather than hitting the town. Large flexible entertaining spac-
es create the ultimate backdrop for festive parties, as through-flowing zones work to maximise the infectious atmosphere. Ben Annetts, Sales & Marketing Director, Berkeley Homes (Southern), comments: “Open plan living has been a popular design trend for many years due to the flexibility it provides. The layout style has been particularly popular since the boom in celebrity chefs made home entertaining a lifestyle choice. “Gone are the days when the host is stuck alone in the kitchen when guests come over, and a meal is served in a formal dining room. In many cases, thanks to the demand for glamorous kitchens and open plan living, cooking for friends is all part of the entertainment. “With the cost of visiting restaurants and bars constantly increasing, people are now much more inclined to stay in and entertain at home. With the desire for a home
that has a great entertaining space now a prerequisite amongst many of our customers - our properties in West Sussex have been designed to offer flexible and practical living accommodation. “At our developments in Horsham and Barns Green for example, many of our family homes boast a generous open plan living zone perfect for entertaining guests. Contemporary styled kitchen by designer brand Alno, and spa-like bathrooms complete the luxury experience for visiting friends and family,” Ben concluded. The Berkeley Homes development, Highwood in Horsham, is a collection of luxurious apartments and houses conveniently situated a short walk to amenities, good local school and transport links. Offering a range of different properties, these high quality homes cater for a variety of lifestyles. The Ashmiles in Barns Green is

Johnson brace helps YM beat Loxwood Photos by Cliver Turner
YM`s Dave Brown and Loxwood`s Joe Holvey in action Saturday December 19 – SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 3 – 0 Loxwood Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter Horsham YMCA completed the Premier Division double over near neighbours Loxwood last Saturday, as goals from Phil Johnson and Dave Brown secured a significant 3-0 win
at Gorings Mead. The fixture was the first of three local derbies for YM during the festive period, with games away to Horsham and at home to Broadbridge Heath to follow over the next two weeks. New signing Johnson, who is on loan from Burgess Hill Town, broke the deadlock with an excellent finish just before the quarter hour mark, before top goalscorer Brown doubled
YM’s advantage right on the stroke of half time. The visitors enjoyed a large share of the second half possession, but they failed to make their dominance count, and Johnson sealed all three points with another neat finish in added time to mark his sixth goal in two starts. Assistant YM manager, Dean Potter, commented: “I’ve got only praise for all of the lads because they worked their socks off. We knew
YM`s Sam Schaaf and Loxwood captain Eddie French battle for the ball that it would be tough because Loxwood are a good side. They play football and we knew it was going to be a battle. I thought that in the first half an hour, we edged it. The last fifteen of the first half we were a bit under the cosh to be fair and we managed to get the second goal against the run of play. Suddenly you’re going in at half time from 1-0 up to 2-0 up and it probably put them on the back
foot and on a bit of a downer. In the second half, although we were second best for the last fifteen minutes, I thought that we did well. We did our jobs. Everyone kept their discipline and we saw it out. Not many teams will beat Loxwood 3-0.” YM Team: Fox, D. Sullivan, Gathern, Dugdale, Carden, Hibbert, Gedling, Brown, Wright, Johnson, Schaaf (Donaldson 80). Unused subs: Pollard, Wood.

Horsham and Roffey first meet on June 25
cricket
Martin Read - Sports Reporter
At the half way point between the end of last season and the start of the forthcoming campaign local cricket fans will be heartened by the release of the 2016 fixtures. The 2016 Premier League will run from May 7, when Horsham entertain Brighton & Hove and Billingshurst host Bexhill, while Roffey travel to Cuckfield. The intriguing crop of local derbies include Horsham v Roffey on June 25 (when a Beer Festival is proposed at Cricketfield Road) – and the return fixture at Roffey on August 27, the week after Horsham visit Billingshurst seeking revenge for two defeats at the hands of last season’s newcomers. Roffey
will be aiming to notch up a consecutive hat trick of titles, achieved only twice in the 45 year history of the Premier League. There will be cup games prior to commencement of the Premier League on Sunday April 24 in Round 1 of the ECB National Club Championship Knock Out Cup Horsham go to Sutton and Billingshurst to Reigate Priory (Roffey having a bye). And on April 30 in Round 1 of the Gray-Nicolls T20 Sussex Cup Billingshurst play Brighton and Hove, while Roffey and Horsham both visit Division 2 opposition (Roffey at Lindfield and Horsham at Ifield). Although there will be no Horsham Festival in 2016 there will be the customary programme of Sussex 2nd XI fixtures and representative matches – and, it is hoped, a much coveted game against Lashings in August.
The appointment of John Burroughs to head up Collyer’s new Sport Academy confirms the college’s commitment to provide the very best facilities and coaching for the district’s budding sports stars. John, well known for performing at a high level in cricket and hockey for Horsham, now aims to take standards at Collyer’s to the next level. There will be three sports integrated into the new academy format: Rugby, Netball and Basketball. Others will follow in an ambitious strategy that plans to see the college attract more and more talented and elite performers from across the region. John Burroughs explained: “The students will have hours committed to their sport made part of their overall study programme, so it doesn’t
get in the way of their other subjects. It’s imperative that we find the right balance, so that students can excel both academically and in their chosen sport”. The key for Collyer’s will be to use their outstanding facilities and excellent coaching team to help them stand out from other educational establishments across the south of England. John added: “There aren’t many colleges in the region that can offer a high quality of sport, alongside the superb academic reputation we have at Collyer’s. Students can be part of a sports academy alongside academic subjects, or with the addition of the new triple BTEC in sport, now have the option to study an exclusive sport programme”. Palmer’s Lotus taken over by Renault Motor Racing Dave Smith – Sports Editor After being confirmed a few weeks ago as one of F1’s main drivers for the 2016 season Jolyon Palmer now finds himself, not surprisingly, a member of a team other than the one he was originally down to drive for. Lotus, who Palmer was reserve driver for last season and was named as a part of their main driving team for 2016, was on the brink of insolvency and has been negotiating a takeover for months. Palmer will now drive for French manufacturing giant Renault who have finally completed the takeover of the Lotus F1 team after a long drawn out negotiation that has been blighted with
numerous disputes and disagreements; the biggest of which being with Bernie Ecclestone over prize money. These issues have all been settled and the takeover has now gone through allowing Renault to make its return as a constructor for the first time since 2009. Renault has won four world driver and constructor doubles as an engine supplier to Red Bull from 2010-2013. However a falling out between the two - due to Renault’s failure to produce a competitive turbo hybrid engine over the past two seasons - has led to Renault decid-
ing to again enter the world of F1 with its own team. Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado and Southwater’s Jolyon Palmer were the two drivers signed by Lotus while the Renault takeover was still in doubt and they will now both take their place as Renault’s main team drivers for 2016. J o l y o n Palmer will now drive for Renault

Big crowd expected for Horsham vs YM Football
Dave Smith - Sports Editor
The biggest crowd at Gorings Mead for many a year is expected on Bank Holiday Monday, December 28, when Horsham have a ‘home’ fixture against their landlords Horsham YMCA. Both clubs are having excellent seasons and both are very much in the running for promotion to the Ryman League. Going into the match Horsham are in third place on 45 points and YM sit in fifth spot on 44 points. Amazingly, with history at both clubs going back to the nineteenth century, this is the first league clash between the two Horsham clubs. They last met in a competitive fixture on October 25, 2011, when the Hornets beat YM 3-2 in a tight Sussex Senior Cup tie. The eagerly awaited league match on Monday kicks off at 2.00pm and represents a great opportunity for Horsham families to take in some fresh air, and to perhaps also take in their first ever local football match. All supporters are invited to a light buffet in the clubhouse after the match.
On the same day Loxwood host Broadbridge Heath FC at their Plaistow Road ground. The kick off for this match is 11.00am enabling football fans to take in both games. Following these matches another two local derbies take place on January 2.

Declan blows away Old Alleynians with four tries rugby
Richard Ordidge - HRUFC
Saturday December 19 – London 3 South East Park House 46 - 40 Pulborough
Saturday Dec 19 - London 2 South East Horsham 38 – 25 Old Alleynians In the first meeting between the two clubs, Horsham returned to winning ways against Dulwich based Old Alleynians. Horsham head coach Nick Stocker said, “Declan Nwachukwu will take the headlines for his four tries but my man of the match goes to Will Bell, for setting up one of Declan’s tries, upon his return to the back three, and for his all round attacking play and defensive work.” Old Alleynians kicked off with a strong wind at their backs but it was Horsham who were on top from the outset. Will Bell sliced through the opposition defence only to be hauled down just short of the try line but Josh Mills showed quick thinking to dive over the prostrate bodies to score from two yards. Fred Parker then calmly slotted a penalty for Old Alleynians and after 6 minutes the Green and Whites were leading 5-3. On 27 minutes Bell and Mills combined to find Declan Nwachukwu who ran 70 yards to score a superb solo counter attack try evading the clutches of several defenders; the try was converted by Bell. Stocker continued, “We have always known that Declan has raw finishing power but I was particularly pleased that five of our six tries came from our back three.” Old Alleynians Parker missed a penalty attempt from in front of the posts and the Green and Whites were quick to exploit the opportu-

Declan Nwachukwu's power and pace tore Old Alleynians apart nity with Bell making the incisive break through the defence before passing to the supporting Nwachukwu to score his second try under the posts; McCabe stepped up to make the conversion. Parker narrowed the deficit to 19-6 when Horsham were penalised for handling on the ground then the Green and Whites scored their fourth and bonus point try on the stroke of half time when Mills found Watts on his outside to jink past a couple of defenders to score. The try was converted by Bell and Horsham entered the break leading 26-6. Horsham brought on their bench players for the second half but it was Old Alleynians who looked reinvigorated and scrum half Tom Unwin made no mistake early in the half from a sniping run from the side of a ruck. Aled Price made a great
Nwachukwu scoring one of his four tries for Horsham tackle when Old Alleynians looked likely to score but from the next phase with the Horsham defence stretched, the ball was passed wide for prop Hiren Sharma to cross the line for an easy score. Old Alleynians had narrowed the deficit to 2618 after 60 minutes and the home supporters were starting to become worried, but their fears were eased when Smith found Nwachukwu who completed his hat-trick by running in to score from inside his own half. Michael Tredgett was yellow carded after an aggressive tackle and Horsham had to play out the game with fourteen men. Old Alleynians put some good phases together to open up Horsham for Ali Henderson to score unchallenged, and after the conversion by Parker the lead had narrowed to 31-25 with four minutes remaining.
Horsham then sealed the win when McCabe fired out a long pass to Nwachukwu to cross for his fourth try. Stocker lamented, “Having scored four tries by the break, I was disappointed that our performance levels dropped off in the second half and we took our foot off the gas. It was however important to get back to winning ways. I thought Will Bell was outstanding throughout, and that Josh Mills and Ollie Harcus also had good games.” Horsham’s next fixture is way to Crowborough on January 2; a game that if they win will lift them to third in the league. Horsham Team: Bell; Watts, Ordidge (A Price), Johnson, Nwachukwu; McCabe, Mills; Barber, Grantham-Hill, Brady; Harcus, Whiting; S Price, Thompson (Smith), Tredgett (Gaynor).
Although Pulborough narrowly lost this high scoring game at Bromley they had good reason to be pleased with their performance, especially their six tries and accurate kicking – and two bonus points. The game got off to a blistering start with five tries in the first 20 minutes; for Borough Nick Haynes from Loughborough University scored with his first touch of the ball before both Captain Simon Burfiend and Dan Bullock got over the line, yet Borough trailed 31-19 at the break. The second half was marked by a Will Scrase hat trick – his third try earning high praise from Head Coach Clayton Saunders: “He caught the ball, ran round the opposition to score a really stunning try – as good as any you’re likely to see!” Full back Frazer Oliphant-Hope’s boot was as reliable as ever with a penalty and regular conversions but Park House were not to be denied, Clayton adding: “We had a strong team out but the big Kent forwards kept running hard lines and pushing us back. We’ve had a tough series of matches against top table teams and while the New Year fixtures may look kinder there are few easy pickings in this league.” Pulborough, down one place to seventh, next take the field on January 9 in a home match against Old Dunstonians. Old D’s are now 11th, but amid strong early season form beat Borough in September.
