Southwater man imprisoned for child sex offences Unemployed, former assistant Scout leader jailed for five and a half years following 18 offences Robert Hepburn, 28, unemployed, of The Fieldings, Southwater, has been sentenced over a series of sexual offences against young boys. He was sentenced to a total of five and a half years' imprisonment at Brighton Crown Court on Tuesday, May 5, having been convicted on Monday, March 30, after a trial, of 18 sexual offences. Ten of the offences were of causing or inciting engagement in sexual activity, seven were of possession of indecent images and videos of children, and one was of possessing prohibited images. He will also be a registered sex offender for life and was served

with a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) to run indefinitely, severely restricting his access to children and computers. There was no evidence of direct physical 'contact' offending against children and there is no evidence to suggest that any children are currently at risk. Detective Constable Phil Peadon said: "Hepburn was an Assistant Scout Leader with a local Scout Group. We arrested him in August 2012 after receiving information, and numerous indecent images and videos and some prohibited images were found on a computer we seized from his address. Thousands of Skype and MSN Chat Logs were
also found on the computer and a number of Skype user ID’s and email addresses were created. "He then used these ID's and email addresses to contact young boys and one young girl, some but not all of whom he met at or through the Scouts, befriending them before exchanging indecent images and sexually explicit messages and in some cases watching them carry out indecent acts on webcam. "We have had the fullest co-operation from the Scouts Association and from local authority children's services throughout this investigation, and families of the boys concerned have been kept informed."

Phillip Dennett News Reporter A Horsham couple due to be married next week had their joy blighted when someone shot their cat. The RSPCA is appealing for information after Lola, a two-year-old, longhaired silver tortoiseshell, was shot with a pellet gun. The stricken cat limped returned to her home in Gorringes Brook, with wounds to her front right leg.She was taken straight to a vet who found a new pellet in the elbow, and an old one in her left shoulder. Lola has needed surgery on her elbow, which was shot off by the pellet
and had to be completely rebuilt. The cat, which featured in the BBC's Cat Watch programme last year, is kept by Matthew Starr and his fiancée Lucy Davies, 24, who are due to be married at Horsham on May 16. RSPCA inspector Jodie Gregg said: "Poor Lola would have been in an immense amount of pain from this horrible attack. "Unfortunately this kind of thing more common than we would like. Cats, like wildlife, are more vulnerable to such attacks simply because they are out there in the open, unprotected. “The injuries which result can be horrific - and often fatal. Lola was

actually one of the lucky ones. "We urge anyone with any information about this incident to call us on 0300 123 8018.” Mr Starr told the Post he was keeping an open mind about the incident, which happened on April 27. He said: “We don’t know whether it was malicious or not. “Because of her colouring she looks like a squirrel. “It could have been someone shooting her because they mistook her for one. But even then it’s quite concerning that they do something like this in an urban area. It’s not countryside, and there is no need for it at all.”

Horsham serves up another top young chef For the third year in a row, a youngster from Horsham has been crowned the winner of Young Chef, Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland’s national competition. Lewis Wilson, aged 15, saw off over 5,000 young people to win the trophy after competing in the finals on Saturday, April 25. Lewis was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Horsham, which has produced the winners for the two previous years. The budding chef astounded the judges with his outstanding threecourse menu, which included: Starter: Seared mackerel served with pickled and charred fennel and a blackberry dressing Mains: Roast breast of Gressingham Duck served with wild mushrooms, asparagus and quinoa Dessert: Apple tart served with poached rhubarb and elderflower cream Lewis attends the The Forest School, which is where he first discovered his passion for cooking thanks to the school’s catering teacher Malcolm Day, who also mentored the Young Chef winner from 2013. The competition saw eight finalists competing against each other, all of whom had made it through the local and regional heats to compete at the final, which was held at Coleg Cambria in Deeside. The prizes were donated on behalf of the competition’s sponsor Filippo Berio, and Lewis will now go on the trip of a lifetime to the Filippo Berio olive groves in Tuscany where he will experience real Italian cooking. He will also enjoy a day’s cooking tuition at a Michelin-starred restaurant.
Lewis comments: “I was really surprised when they announced me as the winner, and I never believed I could get this far - it is such a great achievement. The time and effort practicing the recipes during the week obviously paid off. “The hardest part of the competition was managing my time effectively and plating the dishes up perfectly once they were completed, and the prize to Tuscany is like the icing on the cake. I am delighted to be given this lifetime opportunity to learn new cookery skills.”
The competition saw eight finalists competing against each other Rotary in GB&I’s Young Chef competition was created to give young people across Great Britain and Ireland the chance to display their creative talents with food, while discovering the importance of healthy eating. Dave Smith, president of the Rotary Club of Horsham, added: “We’re incredibly proud that as a club we have supported the past three Young Chef winners. They have all displayed incredible talent and flair for cooking, and we wish Lewis the best of luck in the future – I know he’ll go far.” For more information about youth projects in Rotary GBI, contact your local Rotary club or visit www.rotarygbi.org.

Horsham celebrates the 70th anniversary of VE Day Horsham Museum horshammuseum.org.uk
People in the Horsham area celebrating VE Day 70 years ago feature in an exhibition running at Horsham Museum. The images are being shown until May 23 as part of the 70th anniversary commemoration of the end of the Second World War in Europe, from a period when photographic film was in short supply. On the 8 May 1945 the nation celebrated the end of the war in Europe which had taken place the day before on 7 May with the Nazi surrender. Henfield-based photographer Marjorie Baker created memorable photographs of local men and women. Her portrait images are being complimented with rare scenes of war time in Horsham district and snap shots of VE day celebrations. The museum says that the importance of the day was signified by the use of such a rare commodity as film, because they knew it was an historic event worth recording. The month-long display, which ends on May 23, also features with a costume of the month, focusing on a rare tank uniform. On show will also be an amazing survival, a wooden panel with portraits of the allied leaders drawn by an unknown Canadian soldier, which
was rescued from a barrack before its destruction. Although VE day was celebrated, that was not the end of the War. Many British and other allied troops were still fighting in the Far East. There the war continued until 15 August 1945 when Japan surrendered before formally surrendering on 2 September 1945, giving rise to some confusion when VJ (Victory in Japan Day) Day occurred.

Take two minutes to remember VE Day

West Sussex County Council will fly the Union flag on Friday, May8, to mark the 70-year anniversary of the end of World War Two. The flags will be up on all WSCC buildings to commemorate the anniversary of the moment peace was declared on Victory in Europe (VE) day in 1945. Louise Goldsmith, West Sussex County Council Leader, said: “Sussex has such a rich history and the losses suffered in both World Wars were felt dearly across our county. “I hope communities come together to celebrate this momentous occasion. The 70th anniversary of VE Day is an opportunity to bring people of all ages together to reflect and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.” Councillor Nigel Peters, WSCC’s Military Champion, will be at a beacon lighting ceremony in Littlehampton. He added: “Many younger people will find it difficult today to imagine the impact that the Second World War had on all parts of the community within the country which is why it is important to mark these significant events. “The County Council has extensive information on what happened in the county and I would encourage everyone to visit our website and their local library to have a look.” West Sussex Record Office in Orchard Street, Chichester, has a wealth of information available to
people who might want to trace their military ancestors. The office also holds the archives for the Royal Sussex Regiment and can help people access: • army lists • local newspapers • census returns • absent voters lists • Home Guard muster rolls • soldiers who died in the First World War and Second World War (CDs). The Royal Sussex Regiment Archives consist of documents, photographs, audio-visual records and
printed works. These are derived from both official and private sources covering the history of the Royal Sussex Regiment from its formation in 1701 as the 35th Regiment of Foot to its amalgamation in The Queen's Regiment in 1966. Last month, West Sussex County Council’s Full Council unanimously agreed to support the Veteran’s Interview Programme which guarantees former service personnel interviews with WSCC for jobs if they need the person specification as a way of supporting veterans back into work when they leave the armed forces.

Horsham - the UK’s next digital hub? Could Horsham be the UK’s next Digital Hub? Tanbridge House School is hosting an exciting new event this summer along with key players in the tech industries, in a bid to kick start the development of the town’s digital community. The new Business Breakfast meeting is being hosted by Tanbridge House School in partnership with Hack Horsham, Creative Assembly and Horsham District Council on June 17. As well as a number of exciting presenters throughout the morning, the event will bring together a host of key people from the digital/tech industries in Sussex and the surrounding areas, in order to generate discussion on the creation of a Horsham Digital Hub to support both education and business. Jules White, Headteacher at Tanbridge, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to get involved at the very start of turning Horsham into a Digital Hub. A number of passionate professionals currently working within the digital industries will be presenting and sharing their ideas and expertise which should lead to some interesting discussions. We are also hoping the event will help Tanbridge House School with the creation of a new ‘Futures’ Room for use by the school and the local community, packed with new technologies.” Nicholas Butler of Hack Horsham and Independent Candidate (Rof-
fey North) said: "The Internet has changed the nature, and the location, of how business and education is delivered; there is little reason for Horsham not to reach out and take part in that change. Thanks to the enthusiasm I have witnessed for greater advocacy in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) I believe it is possible for students, parents and local businesses, to take part in accessing those opportunities." Cllr Frances Haigh said: “This a very exciting project for Horsham. It brings together businesses, schools and local residents to help generate the talents and skills needed for our local economy. I am delighted to be involved and I look forward to seeing what we can do to support the amazing Futures Room with all the latest technology.” The event supports some ongoing projects between the team including Coder Dojo workshops (teaching young people how to code with the help of expert teachers and mentors from Creative Assembly) and an innovative design project in Primary Schools, which asked children to re-design Horsham using Minecraft and view it using Oculus Rift 3d headsets. If you would like to find out more about the event or to register your interest, please contact Sally Linsell at Tanbridge House School atslinsell@ths.uk.net or call 01403 755981.
Farlington Charity Golf Day tees off next week
Farlington School’s second Charity Golf Day will be held on Friday, May 15, at Ifield Golf Club, Crawley. The day will be in aid of two very worthwhile charities, Cancer Research UK and the Farlington Foundation. Cancer Research UK has saved millions of lives by discovering new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. The Farlington Foundation was set up in 2005 to further the education of pupils attending Farlington School by the awarding of scholarships, bursaries and prizes. It promises to be a very enjoyable day, with some competitive golf, excellent prizes, a raffle and an auction at the dinner. If you
would like to enter a team for the Golf Day, please contact Nia Cumber by email: cumbern@farlingtonschool.net or call the School office on 01403 254967. Entry is also open to non-Farlington parents. Sara Whittaker, Farlington’s Director of PE and Games, who is organising the event, said: “Our last Charity Golf Day was a tremendous success with some very competitive golf as well as plenty of prizes and an auction. If you are not a golfer, but would like to support the event, you might like to sponsor a hole or be kind enough to donate a raffle prize or an auction item for the day. We raised over £4000 last time and hope to exceed this for our two worthy charities.”

Fun and games at Rusper May Day The organisers of this years Rusper May Day Celebrations are pleased to report another record breaking attendance for this ever popular and traditional village event. Chris Hill, organiser said: “This has been our biggest and boldest event yet! In addition to all of the returning attractions, 2015 has seen the very successful launch of Rusper’s Fun Dog Show. “We set out to raise £1600 towards the purchase of a public access defibrillator and largely thanks to the support of local businesses and huge support from visitors it looks as if our raffle alone has helped us smash this target" The annual event took place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 4.

Sussex Folklore: Exotic animals roaming the Sussex countryside Neil arnold Sussex Folklore
I’ve often wondered just how many weird and wonderful nonnative animals have established themselves in the wilds of the United Kingdom. We often scoff at such possibilities and yet the reports and hard evidence continue. For instance, I’ve spoken of the wallaby populations before and many people think that such sightings are recent and yet in 1943 people were spying unusual, hopping creatures throughout the county. An article from The Age of October 2, that very same year reports on how inhabitants of Lower Beeding were in fact dining on such marsupials. The wallabies had previously been kept on land owned by Sir Edmund Loder who had imported such animal four decades previous but numbers increased so rapidly that many were destroyed. Others of coursed escaped, or were possibly intentionally released into the wilds of England where they have established themselves as breeding colonies. In 1943 Lady Loder was quoted as saying that she and her tenants often fed on wallabies and that should one come across such an animal in the wilds then one must kill it and eat it as “food is so short”. Of course; animals are often known to escape from local zoo parks and private menageries – some are recaptured; often due to their size such as the two bears which briefly went on the rampage
in 1983 after escaping from their compound at Bognor. The animals, a male said to weigh 45-stone and a slightly lighter female at 30-stone were shot dead by police marksmen (surely tranquillisers would have been better?) after they were reported to have terrorised a café and eaten several chickens. In the 1930s it was said that a strange creature was on the loose in East Sussex and was blamed for attacking a local man. The man; who was employed by a local estate stated that he’d come face to face with a creature resembling a monstrous rat that was “the size of a fox terrier” but having “four tusk-like teeth” and stranger still, “webbed rear feet”. The creature may sound like something rom some far flung foreign land or even the manifestation from a horror film but whereas many so-called encounters remain vague on this occasion the creature was actually killed. The body of the animal was taken to Tunbridge wells whereupon it was stuffed and then later identified by curators from the local museum. They named the beast as a coypu; a South American semiaquatic rodent which over time has been introduced to Europe. In non-native climes the animal is seen as a pest although the live near rivers and feed on plants. Where this particular coypu came from nobody knows; at the time this specimen was described as the only one in England apart from one exhibited at the British Museum. At the time it was believed that the coypu had escaped from a private zoo and the grounds of the estate were thoroughly searched in order to make sure that no other individuals were present. None were found.

Itchingfield School Governing Body Itchingfield Itchingfield school has been at the heart of the education in the Itchingfield parish for over 160 years since it opened as a National Society School. A 1854 church document shows the school was intended to ‘educate the children of the poorest inhabitants’ whilst the playing fields are glebe lands for ‘enjoyment of retired clergy’. Now this iconic village school – the only split-site primary school left in West Sussex - is embarking on one of its most historic moments and moving to brand new facilities in Barns Green. To mark this occasion, the school is planning to host both closing and opening ceremonies to recognise, appreciate and celebrate its impor-
tance to the village community. The closing ceremony is Saturday 20th June at 2.00pm on the school premises. Everyone with any association with the school including previous headteachers, former Governors and PTA members and any former pupils are most welcome to attend the afternoon’s festivities. Memorial activities will include a celebratory service on the playground led by the Diocese and Itchingfield church and the sealing of a Time Capsule. There will also be a stand to show any memorabilia and everyone is encouraged to bring along books, trophies and photographs of their time at this landmark school. If you are considering attending the closure festivities on June 20, please ring 01403 790204 or email on office@itchingfield.w-sussex.sch.uk.

Gardening: Horsham is a horticultural paradise Guy deakins planetpr.co.uk
I may not be Horsham born and bred, but I am glad I chose to live here From what I know of the local towns and villages there are a number of small but vital horticultural groups (all in need of new members to keep traditions alive). For a small yearly fee you have advice, organised visits and decent lecture programmes at your disposal. You may even see me. (I am incidentally available and a list of
my talks can be found on my website). We have a wealth of nurseries and garden centres in the district. If you are willing to look carefully, you may just find a gem like Charles Hurst Plants at Ifold . A superb nursery teeming with the unusual for the horticultural connoisseur. But there are others. As Shaw Taylor said, keep 'em peeled. Might I suggest to the newly incumbent council members that this theme could be a key strategy for branding Horsham in the future? Of course maintenance is key to this and with ever restricted budgets, it would be short-sighted to allow things to become disheveled and unkempt. Unlike other towns Horsham has a grand tradition of making sure our streets are green and verdant -it would be a shame to follow other towns into a bland oblivion of sameness. I may not be Horsham born and bred, but I am glad I chose to live here. By the way, Dorking has its Cockerel, we have our giant Sprout - the theme is already in our consciousness so with the impending development of the Bishopric and whatever cuts the next five years bring, let's keep the momentum going for a positive future for all.

I honestly think we missed a trick with West Street. Horsham should be rebranded Hortsham. With the wealth of horticultural history in the area we could have benefitted from the tourism. If you look at our glorious green spaces, we are indeed lucky. The park is well loved and has some interesting features such as the maze and human nature garden. The museum in my opinion has a better display than the Garden Museum in London as well as a well thought out garden - perhaps not with Tradescant or Bligh interred but Hills Cemetery was built on a Capability Brown landscape, so beat that mister smarty pants Whittington! Denne Hill, Warnham and Chesworth farm are also interesting spaces to explore as is St Leonard's. To our east we have Nymans, Sheffield park, Borde Hill and Kew at Wakehurst Place. To our south, South Lodge, Leonardslee, the Downs and Parham House at Storrington. To our north we have another set of Downland not to for-
get Poulsden Lacey, Buchan and Tilgate. To our west we have Winkworth, Clandon (sadly charred but set to reopen ), Uppark, Petworth, Stoke Park, Loseley Park and all the Jekyll gardens that open once a year. Of course I have only mentioned a small amount of what is within easy reach, just google Open Gardens and see what I mean. I am lucky in my work that I get to see some real gems, tucked away in secluded spots that really are national treasures - or will be once I have restored them.

Background The right for communities to prepare Neighbourhood Plans was established through the Localism Act 2011, and gives the power for the whole community to develop a shared vision for the future. It provides a mechanism by which local residents and businesses can influence the planning of the area in which they live and work. Southwater Parish Council is preparing a Neighbourhood Plan, as it was felt that a Neighbourhood Plan would assist in managing future challenges in order to obtain the best possible result for the parish. A Steering Group was formed to lead the process. Why are we calling for sites? As part of its work in assessing development needs, the Southwater Parish Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group is required to call landowners and agents for land within the parish for expressions of interest in applying for future development permission. This will be an informal opportunity for land owners and agents to propose sites within the parish of Southwater for possible development. Putting a site forward does not guarantee that the Steering Group will support its development in the future, as all sites need to be judged against relevant planning policies and other considerations. We will consider proposals for a wide range of development uses. The site suggestions will be used to guide and inform the preparation of the Neighbourhood Plan. The deadline for submitting sites for consideration is 12 noon Friday 29 May 2015.

named winner of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, the UK’s highest accolade for business success, for the second time. The Queen’s Award was awarded in the category of Continuous Innovation in recognition of its success in bringing innovation to the wiring accessory market and, in particular, for its technological development in designing dimmer switches for LED lighting. Varilight’s LED dimmer technology have brought significant growth to its business over the past two years. New show format for Julian Lloyd Webber a big success Martin Jeremiah Review: An Evening with Julian Lloyd Webber Capitol Theatre Horsham 23rd April 2015 Enjoying some pre-performance drinks in the Capitol’s foyer, it was clear that the audience was approaching the evening with some trepidation. It had not been that many months since the people of Horsham had witnessed another virtuoso performance by the great man and his wife Jiaxin in this very same venue. The news that Julian Lloyd Webber had been forced to stop playing the cello in public due to injury last year had been devastating. Could the audience make the somewhat scary journey to the new format? Perhaps some doubted it. They needn’t have worried however. Revealed, was a scintillating blend of video clips, stills, readings, fascinating anecdotes, questions and answers and of course – some superb musicianship featuring pieces such as father William Lloyd Webber’s ‘In the HalfLight’ and brother Andrew’s ‘The Music of the Night’. Each of the many twists and turns added up to a roller-coaster ride to enjoy rather than be frightened by. Being a master of the instrument over the years was of course a serious business, yet the
audience quickly learned, or were prompted to remember, the gentle warmth and humour of the great man behind the cello. The video clip of teaching Kenny Everett’s Sid Snot the cello, Julian’s joke about once sharing the same hairdresser as Cleo Lane and the hilarious reading from his book ‘Travels with my Cello’ all spring to mind as immediate examples. Another thing which came across in the video clips, sometimes overlooked in the shadows of his solo ability over the years, was the musical leadership of Julian – his ability to inspire the other great musicians he performed with, or even whole orchestras. The clip of the performance of the South Bank Show theme tune by ‘greats’ from across the musical spectrum demonstrated this quality with aplomb. As above, mix in some amazing live performance by Jiaxin Lloyd Webber on cello and pianist Pam Chowhan at cleverly placed intervals. Finish with a ‘feel good factor’ performance on cello by young James. Follow it up with some advice to this plucky, up-and-coming young musician from the great man and a short performance by himself as an encore. The package was thus complete. Will the nation of music lovers be able to make the transition to the new format? You bet! A happy Horsham audience will be just some of those spreading the word!

MILKSHAKE! ‘PARTY PARTY’ LIVE Last week, over 200 students, friends and family attended a red carpet evening at the ninth annual Collywood Film and Television Awards Ceremony, held at The Capitol, Horsham. Collywood celebrated the achievements of Collyer’s most skilled and creative Media and Film Studies students and gave proud teachers the chance to show some incredible student work on the big screen. Teachers and other college luminaries presented a range of awards and the evening culminated in a paparazzi photo call! Students George Grammer-Taylor and Tahnee Lovegrove did a superb job presenting a lively and entertaining evening. Categories on the night included ‘Best A2 Film’, ‘Best Performance’ and the ‘People's Choice’ award. Jonathan Nunns, Subject Leader for Media Studies, commented: “It was a terrific evening in celebration of the talent and hard work of our media and film students, we couldn’t be more proud. “Special thanks to George Grammar-Taylor and Tahnee Lovegrove for hosting the show and helping to make the event such a success. Thanks also to Elliott Godden and Matt Ide for marvellous editing and design work, which was fundamental. Final thanks to our ex-student Beccy Skinner, for returning on the night to help us with technical support for the show.” Mark Ramey, Subject Leader for Film said: “Aside from the exceptional work produced, a highlight was George our compare dancing on stage to cover a pause in proceedings.” During a fun and glitzy night of high drama, the ‘Best A2 Film’ was won by Elliott Godden, Alice Monk and Lucy Tebb for their production of “Error 4”, while ‘Best A2
Film Script’ was awarded to Katie Witchell for “Folie À Deux”. ‘Best Performance’ went to the cast of media A2 project “Meet the Housemates”: Beth Dixon Cave, Louise Lord, Luke Sparling and Lucy Tebb. ‘Best A2 Media Audio Visual’ prize, for “Don’t Wear a Stereotype”, was awarded to Joely Frost. Matty Cepowicz (‘Broken Bond’ film posters) and Oli East (‘Ingranaggio’ fashion advertising) won ‘Best A2 Media Print & Web’ and Angus Davidson was thrilled to walk away with ‘Best AS Film’ for “Gemina”; while ‘Best Editing’ went to Alec Rychlik for “Awolnation Sail”. ‘Best Cinematography’ was awarded to Ross Keeley, Andee Lasham and Nikki Pankrashchenko for “The Change”. ‘Best AS Media Magazine’ went to Matt Compton for “Moda” and ‘Best AS Media Music Video’ was awarded to James Hoult, Tom Sou-
thon and James Zimmerman. The highly anticipated ‘People's Choice’ award, voted for by the Collyer’s public, was won by Jacob Hamilton, Hugo Vickers and Sam Winser for “Help I’m Alive”. Finally, the ‘Best Commissioned Project’ went to the Horsham Police awareness film “Is This Normal?” by Maddie Beeby, Emily Benstead, Jess Hart, Lucy Keeling; Nas Lamnouar, Lydia Railton, Liam Ruff, Louise Stanley; Arnold Thornton-Rice, James West and Hannah Williams. Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley was delighted, stating: “Collyer’s has an outstanding Faculty of Arts and Communication and Collywood is an excellent opportunity for our students to showcase their creative talent. We are grateful to the Capitol Arts Centre team for their support; a superb venue which gives a professional edge to the ceremony.”

How to avoid mould - and a dispute with your landlord/tenant Leaders - Horsham www.leaders.co.uk As we gladly leave another long winter behind us, many home owners, landlords and tenants up and down the country will be all too aware of the range of problems the cold weather has inflicted on their property. One of the most common is mould. It might not sound like a particularly serious issue, but for thousands of landlords and tenants in the UK it is a major headache. Capable of growing anywhere from carpet to clothing, inside walls, on pipes and above ceilings, mould causes more disputes between landlords and tenants than any other issue. Not only can it be extremely expensive and difficult to fix, it can damage the health of people living with it through the allergens, irritants and toxins it produces. Jane Wilkinson, Leaders’ regional director for Sussex, said: “Mould can seemingly appear out of nowhere and very quickly become a huge concern in many properties. “We often see landlords and tenants pointing the finger at each other when mould appears, with the former suspecting its presence is the result of the lifestyle of the latter. However, tenants often believe their landlord should have done more to prevent it. “Most cases we are alerted to are the result of high humidity rather than any faults with a building, so the most effective approach to take is to implement measures that reduce moisture within a home.”
Leaders has compiled five practical tips to help both landlords and tenants reduce the likelihood of their property being affected by mould. - Identify problem areas in a property: While it is impossible to entirely mould-proof a property, you can strengthen its defences. Think about which areas are at most risk. For instance, does the bathroom flood or does condensation form around the bedroom window? Preventing mould in these places could be as simple as treating them with the right products or making minor repairs. - Focus on ventilation: The growth of mould can be accelerated by some everyday activities. Cooking dinner, taking a shower or doing the laundry releases moisture into your home, so make sure you have effective ventilation systems in place to ensure it does not stick around. - Divert water away from your property: If the terrain around your home does not naturally slope, allowing water to flow away, it could gather and eventually seep into your basement or walls. Find a way to push it as far away as possible. - Monitor humidity: Indoor humidity should be between 30 and 60 per cent. A good hardware store will sell a device that allows you to measure your exact level, and if you find it is too high you can take action in troublesome spots, such as areas where condensation builds. - Dry wet areas: It is impossible for mould to grow without moisture, so it is crucial that you dry any area that becomes wet immediately. Whether your bath water has spilled on to the floor, a pipe has developed a leak or there has
been heavy rainfall, aim to dry it as soon as you can. Mrs Wilkinson added: “We believe these simple tips will help landlords and tenants avoid becoming embroiled in a dispute and, most importantly of all,
keep properties free of mould and the damage it causes.” For advice you can trust on all aspects of renting, letting, selling or purchasing property please contact your local Leaders branch – www.leaders.co.uk.

Neil Boniface smashes Atlantis sibling duo win top girl and Parkrun course record boy awards at Spring Open Meet Swimming Dave Smith – Sports Editor
Sister and brother Ellie and Jamie Smith scooped the Top Girl and Boy awards at the Atlantis Spring Open Meet. Ellie, already an experienced campaigner at the age of 11 scored big points in seven events ranging from 50 to 200 metres on all strokes, while nine year old Jamie was competing in his first open
meet and he accumulated his points from eight races over the same range of events as his sister. The pair’s mother and father Jo and David Smith of Billingshurst were justifiably proud of the achievements of their young swimmers who both impressed Coach Bill Penny, who commented: “This was a big swim meet and for a brother and sister to win the two Top Swimmer awards is something special.”
Top swim award winners Ellie and Jamie Smith
West Chiltington duo set sights on Lombard Trophy glory at Gleneagles Golf Dave Smith – Sports Editor Neil Boniface smashed the Parkrun record Athletics Dave Smith – Sports Editor At last weekend’s 5k Horsham Parkrun two of the quickest runners in the area, Neil Boniface and Max Dumbrell, both recorded exceptional times with Neil Boniface smashing the course record. Neil finished in a time of 15.05 to
create a new course record, however Max’s time of 15.33 would have broken the previous course record if Neil had not already finished. The 5k Horsham Parkrun takes place every Saturday at 9:00am in Horsham Park and is open to all abilities and is free to enter. Runners should register prior to running to ensure of a recorded time.
Kevin Williams, a 43 year old from Storrington, and his West Chiltington PGA Professional partner, Jonathan Groves, are one step away from following in the footsteps of Europe’s Ryder Cup heroes with an appearance in the Lombard Trophy final at Gleneagles. Williams teed up a chance to tread the fairways of the PGA Centenary Course, venue for the dramatic matchplay win over the
United States last year, when he won his club qualifying competition with a score of 38 points. He and Groves now advance to the regional final of what is the biggest pro-am in Europe at Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club on July 20, where they will compete against up to 70 other clubs for the chance to secure one of 16 prized spots available for the 36-hole grand final. Ian Isaac, head of sales at Lombard, said: “After a record number of entries in 2014, this year’s Lombard Trophy promises to be anoth-
er exciting competition. It’s great to once again be working with The PGA to offer the opportunity for professional and amateur golfers to play some fantastic courses.” The tournament attracts entries from upwards of 700 clubs across Great Britain and Ireland. Lombard originally sponsored the tournament from 1995 to 2006 before returning as headline sponsor in 2013. The PGA National Pro-Am Championship has a total prize fund of £80,000, with the winning professional at the grand final taking home a cheque for £12,000.

Successful start for Pulborough Cold start for the Billingshurst bowlers
Pulborough got their season off to a good start Bowls Jane Gray – Pulborough BC Pulborough’s week started with a chill, as they played the Worthing Grasshoppers in very cold temperatures on Tuesday evening. 5 triples played and 3 were victorious. The top rink for Pulborough went to skip and Club President, Mick Ralph, with number 1 Kay Piper and number 2 Mick Ayling 22/12. Skip Ivan Salmon and team won 12/9 and John Brown and team
came in with a respectable 10/8 win, with the overall score of 64/55 to Worthing. Both teams decided to call it a day after just 14 ends when they could no longer feel their fingers. The only home match for Pulborough this week was last Saturday May 2, in a local Derby against Billingshurst BC. The weather held and by half way, Pulborough had already edged into the lead by 4 points. Top rink went to skip Joyce Broadribb, number 1 Melvin Green
and number 2 Malcolm Gray, who had the game of their life, only allowing their opponents 8 points to their 24.Three ends with a score of 4 points showed the quality of play. Other wins went to skip John Brown, with number 1 Jane Gray and number 2, Chris Etherington 24/11, skip John Piper and team, 23/12 and skip Mick Ralph and team, 18/14, with a final score of 99/66 to Pulborough. After a morning’s rain, the cloud over Henfield lifted long enough to produce a fantastic match on Sunday afternoon. Six rinks played in chilly conditions and by tea at halfway it was a 50/50 split with close scores throughout. The top rink for Pulborough was in no doubt, with a score of 30/9 to skip Len Adsett, number 1 Kay Piper, number 2 Joyce Woods and number 3 Colin Andrews, after only allowing their opponents to score on 6/21 ends, with a 6 on end 20 putting the final nail in the coffin. The hospitality was, as always, fantastic and the final score was not a reflection on the closeness of the game at 131/91 to Pulborough. The Branch Shield, at home on Saturday May 9 at 2pm, is follow by Pulborough’s first match in the West Sussex Bowls League (WSBL) against Bognor, on Sunday at 2pm.
Busy summer ahead for Horsham bowlers Bowls Dave Smith – Sports Editor Already this early in the season the keen bowlers at Horsham Park have played eight friendly matches as well as enjoying their weekly club night each Monday evening and the internal Peters League every Friday evening. The club are preparing for the competitive County Leagues in
which they have a mixed team in the Mid Sussex League, a team in the men's Border League and a team in the ladies' Nellie Mercer League. A planned programme of friendly mixed matches will continue throughout the season, until late September, as well as all the club competitions. Other bowls-linked social events such as the Strawberry Tea, Annual Barbecue, Fish and Chip supper and Candlelight Bowls
are also all scheduled in for what promises to be a busy summer of bowling. On Saturday May 16 the club will be holding an open afternoon from 2 p.m. and would welcome anyone, either experienced or a complete novice, that are interested in finding out more about bowling to come along to the open afternoon at the club which is situated in Horsham Park next to the tennis courts.

Christ’s Hospital girl’s success makes history Fives Dave Smith – Sports Editor Christ’s Hospital girls produced one of their most successful performances yet, winning four of the eight titles and trophies available at the National Girls Fives Championships. One pupil, Louise Mathias, has become the most successful girl Fives player in the history of the sport with her record-breaking performance by becoming the first girl to win all four singles titles – U13 in 2010, U14 in 2011, U16 in 2013 and U18 in 2015.To add to Louise’s incredible achievement at national level, Aisyha Alli won the U13 Singles, Angelina Green the U14 Singles, Angelina and Jordanna Joseph the U14 Doubles. Instead of hitting a ball with a bat or a racquet, the ball is hit with the hands; so it is a kind of handball, often explained as ‘like squash but played with gloved hands’. In its modern form Fives is played as Singles or Doubles. Ed Hatton, teacher and Fives
coach congratulated all the girls on their success: “CH girls competed strongly in all categories – in the U13s, U16s and U18s they were runners up in the Doubles.

Mickel extends his lead despite an eventful weekend Motor sport Dave Smith – Sports Editor
John Mickel and the crew travelled to Croft near Darlington last weekend for their furthest destination on the 2015 UK Legends Championship schedule. In what was an event filled meeting for John and his Mickel Motorsport team but the Faygate racer still managed to hold on to, and even extended, his Championship lead. Race one saw him starting 10th on the grid but on the dry surface he fought his way through the field to finish second.
Race two took place in the wet race and without a perfect set up, John struggled to find grip in his KSeal Legend car. He had managed to force his way through a busy field to 6th pace but when the caution flag came out John lost places and then struggled with the car in the wet conditions finally finishing eleventh. In race three, the last of the day, John, with a new set up on the still wet track, started back in 16th on the grid but cut through the field before crossing the line in third. His points put him fifth place overall on the day but he only gave up 5 points on his Championship lead to second placed Ben Power. On the Sunday, in race one, the sun came out and the track was dry
and set for some fast racing. John did not disappoint and after starting 4th on the grid he took the lead within the first lap and then defended off his rivals to take the win. Race two saw John continue his fine form and once again he stormed through to catch the leader Paterson but could not find a way past and so had to settle for second. The final race of the day ended in disappointment for John who had to retire with an electrical problem which meant he collected no points. Luck was with him however as all his top championship rivals all suffered similar fortunes. John finished another 5th place on the day but extended his Championship lead to 305 points ahead of Ben Power in second place.

Kieran Vernon makes A fantastic double for Ryan Moore stunning F3 Cup debut Horse racing Martin Read – Sports Reporter
Kieran Vernon dominated at Donnington Park Motor Sport Dave Smith – Sports Editor West Chiltington F3 driver Kieran Vernon raced his way to a trio of victories at Donnington Park as the 25 year old dominated the third, fourth and fifth rounds of the F3 Cup championship. Experienced racer Vernon had never driven an F3 machine prior to the weekend, but shocked series regulars by securing pole position in qualifying by nearly one second. In the first race of the weekend Kieran had a troubled start, stalling on the grid, but quickly chased down and passed rivals Aaron Steele and Stuart Wiltshire to take victory in his first ever F3 race. The excellent start by Kieran was built upon on Sunday, when the second race of the weekend again saw him again start from pole position. With a much better start this
time Kieran led from start to finish, crossing the line five seconds ahead of second placed Aaron Steele. In the final race Kieran again started on pole but made a sluggish start allowing Stuart Wiltshire and Daniel Tapinos to pass him on the opening lap. However their advantage was short lived and by lap two Kieran was back up to second and on the tail of team-mate Wiltshire. The pair ran around together until Vernon pulled a decisive overtaking move to guarantee a hat-trick of victories. It was a totally dominant weekend from Kieran who had qualified on pole, won all three races, set the fastest race lap and set a new F3 Cup lap record - all of this having never driven an F3 car before. Attention now shifts to Brands Hatch on May 16/17 where Kieran will be looking to repeat his success at Donnington Park.
Local jockey Ryan Moore pulled off a rare double, winning two classic races at Newmarket, the headquarters of British horseracing last weekend. On Saturday he piloted 4-1 favourite Gleneagles to a convincing win in the 2000 Guineas, then on Sunday he rode 13-2 Legatissimo to victory in the 1000 Guineas. Unbeaten in five races as a two year old Gleneagles’ impeccable pedigree shone through as he held off other competitors to cruise home, Ryan saying: “I’m looking forward to him for the rest of the year. He’s a very exciting horse!” In the fast run 1000 Guineas fillies classic Legatissimo was last at the half way stage but her superior stamina enabled her to win impressively, Ryan commenting: “It’s the first time I’ve sat on her but she’s obviously got plenty of ability. They went a proper gallop – she’s got speed and really got up the hill well – I think she’ll probably go further.”
Ryan Moore won both the 1000 & 2000 Guineas The longer Epsom Oaks race next month is in prospect. Meanwhile there is seemingly no end to 31 year old Ryan Moore’s achievements, fresh from winning the highly prestigious Melbourne Cup his major wins keep steamrolling in. His British triumphs have included the Ascot Gold Cup, the Coronation Stakes, the Eclipse, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the
Oaks. But, Ryan is equally well known abroad having won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the Prix du JockeyClub in Paris and top races in Ireland, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, United Arab Emirates and United States. Racing is in the blood – father Gary training at Cisswood Stables and jockey brothers Jamie and Joshua and sister Hayley no strangers to the winner’s enclosure.

New signing Ben Manenti stars in Roffey win Cricket
Martin Read – Sports Reporter
Gray-Nicholls T20 Cup Roffey 147-8 Brighton & Hove 92 All out (18.3 overs) Roffey won by 55 runs Skipper Josh Fleming led from the front, top scoring with 35 on the way to Roffey’s 147-8, a total he described as: “Competitive” before adding “We should have got a few more off the last few overs but there was a bit in it for the bowlers so we felt we’d got enough if we could take some early Brighton wickets.” New overseas signing Ben Manenti got 32 and Matt Davies and
Dan Smith chipped in with valuable twenties. In reply only three of the host’s batsmen made double figures, wickets falling at regular intervals as the seasiders staggered from 17-3 to 71-6 before finally subsiding to a well below par 92 with nine balls unused. Rohit Jagota took 2-22 and Leigh Harrison, Dan Smith and Alec Collins one apiece but teenage Aussie off spinning allrounder Manenti, one of the youngest players to play first grade cricket for Sydney, was the pick of Roffey’s frugal bowlers, his 4-14 winning praise from Josh Fleming: “He’s an exciting prospect and is going to be a great addition to our side.” Tomorrow (Saturday May 9) in their first league match of the new season Roffey entertain always competitive recent champions Preston Nomads, against whom they have a good track record.

Nomads prove too strong Horsham’s Johnson steals the show Gray-Nicholls T20 Cup Preston Nomads 171-4 Billingshurst 125 All out (20 overs) Preston Nomads won by 46 runs Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter Electing to field at Fulking, Billingshurst found it difficult to make inroads into the strong Preston Nomads batting line up. Captain Ben Williams was the pick of the bowlers with 2-21while Shane West and Kelly Russell took a wicket each but an unbeaten 60 from opposition skipper Jeremy Green, 46 from Ollie Gatting and 34 from Robert Wakeford enabled Nomads to put up a challenging 171. Yet at 56-1 Billingshurst were nicely placed with Dhanushka Mitipo-
laarachchi – who finished on 68 not out with 8 fours and a six off 46 balls - going well, until wickets tumbled. Evergreen Carl Simon, the 41 year old former professional cricketer from Antigua, took 3-22 and Gatting grabbed four stumpings as Billingshurst’s middle and lower order faded, only Shane West reaching double figures. Ben Williams told the District Post: “To be honest they were more alert and looked a bit better than us. We were rather thin on batting and at times could have bowled tighter. We missed a couple of chances but we’ve deliberately played some strong sides in our pre season warm games and have had two tough opening cup fixtures. We should be stronger for our first Premier League game”. (East Grinstead , Saturday May 9).
Gray-Nicholls T20 Cup Horsham 209-7 St James’s Montefiore 85 All out (19.4 overs) Horsham won by 124 runs Horsham completely overwhelmed their Division 2 opponents from Keymer. Sussex’s Will Beer’s 67 was the highest score of the match and Horsham’s new signing Nathan Roberts and Ben Shore each took three St James’s wickets for just nine runs, all highly significant performances, yet it was Tom Johnson’s brutal spectacular innings that stole the show. Horsham batted first after winning the toss and pressed on undeterred by the loss of an early wicket to reach 112-2. Enter Tom Johnson. He bombarded the terrified tennis players with 6 massive sixes ricochet-
ing around the courts, his 55 coming from just 18 balls. The onslaught put Horsham in an unassailable position,
It was Tom Johnson’s brutal spectacular innings that stole the show especially after a late flurry carried them to 209-7 with St James’s bowling analyses best left unscrutinised. Recent arrival from South Africa, Nathan Roberts, quickly removed three of St James’s top order and Francois Hurley another new recruit
grabbed a fourth reducing the visitors to 17-4. It got worse when 35-5 became 567, Horsham fielding tigerishly, Johnson pouching three catches starting with a diving stunner before completing a miraculous leaping overhead snatch. Horsham skipper Sam Attfield said: “We really enjoyed that win. TJ is a remarkable player – a superb innings, fantastic catches and he gives us bowling options, too!” Tom added: “I don’t worry too much about being technically correct – if it’s up there I try to hit it. It’s boring to block it!” Tomorrow (Saturday May 9) Horsham begin their league campaign with a visit to Eastbourne and will host local rivals Roffey in the next round of the T20 on June 7.
Horsham get the better of Brighton Sussex League Cup Final U15 Brighton 14 – 19 U15 Horsham Rugby Dave Smith – Sports Editor
The Horsham U15 squad with their medals
After losing in the final to Brighton for the past two years Horsham Rugby Club’s under 15 team finally overcame their south coast rivals to be crowned County Champions. Despite early territorial advantage, that saw Horsham forwards Sam Jewell and Max Wright applying early pressure, the Green and Whites were unable to convert territorial advantage into points. A run through the midfield from one of Brighton’s speedsters caught Horsham out of position and he raced in under the posts for the game’s opening try that was converted to put Brighton 7-0 ahead. The Horsham players rallied and
as the Blues conceded a penalty for being offside at the ruck, Horsham scrum half Aaron Linfield spotted a weakness on the narrow side and raced towards the try line. As the defenders converged on him he passed to George Cook who crashed over the line to reduce the deficit to just 2 points. Captain Joseph Blake narrowly missed the conversion from the touchline. Brighton asserted increasing pressure for the remainder of the half but in defence Horsham’s Eddie Grogan and Ricardo Vasconcelos remained strong and the first half finished with Horsham 5-7 down. The second half saw a confident Horsham take the game to Brighton and before long fullback Charlie Best jinked his way towards the try line and seemed to have been enveloped by a swarm of blue jerseys until the determined Horsham pack drove
him over the line. Blake duly added the extra 2 points to give his team a 12-7 lead. The now buoyant Green and Whites surged forward and from one of the numerous attacks Vincent Everitt hurled himself through a gap in Brighton’s defence, fended off despairing would-be tacklers, and scored at the foot of the posts. Blake again tapped over the conversion, and Horsham were now 19-7 ahead with 12 minutes remaining. Brighton were not finished however and one of their quick forwards collected the ball before racing over the line for a late try which was converted reducing the Horsham lead to five points. Horsham showed good determination and held out to the final whistle and a 19-14 score line that meant they had finally overcome their East Sussex rivals.
