New care home set to take flight in Horsham The countdown has begun to the launch of Skylark House, a brand new 82 bed home in Horsham. The home on St Marks Lane is set to open its doors this November, and teams are busy putting the finishing touches to the purpose-built, luxury home. We caught up with Devendra Lallchand, the home manager, to find out more. Luxury meets wellbeing At first glance, Skylark House looks more like a hotel than a care home. Devendra (Dev) explains, “Everything about the home has been designed to ensure that residents will enjoy the very best care along with a superb lifestyle.

“And when we say the very best care, we mean it. We’ll provide round-the-clock residential, dementia and nursing care, as well as palliative and end-of-life care. That means that your loved one will be able to stay with us in a familiar environment even if their needs change. Ultimately everything we do is about ensuring maximum quality of life. “While great care is key, beautiful surroundings do matter,” Dev continues. “Skylark House is one of a number of brand new homes that our company, Care UK, has recently built that are designed to enable residents to continue enjoying a great lifestyle, even if they’re not as mobile as they once were. Skylark House will have its own hair and beauty salon, coffee shop and in-house cinema, yet residents will always have the peace of

mind that care is on hand every minute of the day or night.” With the home almost finished, its now looking impressive. We peek into different bedrooms: each will be individually decorated and furnished and have its own en-suite wet room.

Keeping active and engaged

Excellence and attention to detail Dev and the home’s customer relations manager, Karen, are currently busy recruiting a 120-strong team of top class care, clinical, catering and housekeeping staff who are passionate about delivering the best service to residents. At the top of the list for Dev and Karen is making sure they recruit colleagues that understand the care at Skylark House will be entirely personalised.

Maintaining independence is a vital part of staying happy and healthy as we age, and a fundamental part of Care UK’s – and the home’s – ethos is activity-based care. “If older people keep active and busy they enjoy a much better quality of life,” Dev explains. “So there’ll always be lots going on here, from gardening and day trips, to film afternoons, gentle exercise sessions, quizzes, baking and arts and crafts. Residents will also be welcome to help out

around the home if they wish, maintaining lifelong routines and habits, from folding laundry to watering plants.” Dev and his colleagues will be inviting local groups and schools into the home to spend time with residents and do different activities, and coffee mornings, summer barbecues and Christmas parties will be great excuses to invite loved ones and local people along. “Residents certainly won’t be stuck for things to do!” Dev smiles.

“Every resident is an individual,” Karen explains, “and when a new resident joins us we’ll put together care and activity plans that will be entirely personalised to their needs. We’ll work with each new resident and their family to learn about their life, hobbies and interests, likes and dislikes, so we can help them to feel completely at home.” New team members will also receive experiential dementia training as a priority before they start working at Skylark House to enhance their understanding of what it may be like to live with dementia.

Launch event Skylark House will be holding an official launch event on 19th January 2017 between 2pm and 5pm. There will be Live entertainment from local jazz band Gershwin Gang, a birds of prey demonstration from the Hawking Centre, belly dancers and much more.

Designed for specialist care With dementia on the increase among the UK’s older population, it’s vital that care homes take into account the needs of people living with this condition. Skylark House incorporates dementia-friendly elements throughout, from the way it is divided into smaller units to create a calmer atmosphere, to how it will use elements such as contrasting paintwork,

plain floor coverings, enhanced light levels and signage to enable residents to find their way around independently. Outside each bedroom there will also be a ‘memory box’. These help to preserve residents’ sense of identity by displaying their own keepsakes and photos while providing a visual clue that they’ve found their room if they’ve been walking around the home independently.

Open days Skylark House will be holding some exclusive open days on 19th and 20th November 2016. To reserve your place at our launch event, or for a chance to take a look around Horsham’s newest care home on one of our open days, please call Karen on 01403 887672 or email karen.davies@careuk.com

Parkour roof top runner hits trouble phil dennett News Editor

A man has run into trouble with police for pursuing parkour on roofs in Horsham. He has been given a community resolution by police investigating the continuing issue of free running – also known as parkour – in Horsham. Police officers were on duty in the town centre when they became aware of two men on the roofs of buildings in West Street. One of them was seen to break approximately three tiles as he performed a manoeuvre on the rooftop of The Works, before causing more damage to the same structure shortly afterwards. PC James Munden gained access to the scene, where he spoke to the free runners about the damage he had witnessed, while PCSO Andy Reed watched on from a nearby car park which had been used by the officers as a vantage point. Now a 24-year-old man from Horsham has been issued with a community resolution for criminal damage, and ordered to pay £200 in compensation. As part of the community resolution, he is required to attend a meeting about to discuss the impact free running on businesses and residents in the town. The name of the man involved in the incident in August has not been made public.

PC Munden, of the Horsham Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “While free running is not a criminal offence generally, individuals can be prosecuted if they commit an offence while doing so, such as criminal damage or antisocial behaviour. “The activity is an ongoing issue in Horsham and some other parts of Sussex, and it is extreme-

While free running is not a criminal offence generally, individuals can be prosecuted if they commit an offence while doing so ly dangerous and can result in serious injury or death. It’s an issue which has blighted businesses and residents in Horsham town centre for several years, and a number of retailers have had to fund repairs to their roofs due to leaks caused by broken tiles. “I hope this serves as a warning to others about the risks associated with free running, and sends out the message that we will continue to respond to reports of free running and take robust action against offenders accordingly.” Earlier this year Horsham councillors voted to take action against parkour and other anti-social offences to protect the public and property.

Billingshurst Youth Football Club’s Under 12s team has been given a boost recently; Horsham’s family-run Skoda dealership, Station Garage, has signed a season long sponsorship deal to help put the club in the fast lane. The sponsorship means that the club’s 30 players (divided into two Under 12s teams) have been presented with brand new, professionally branded training tops something that the club has been wanting for some time. The teams compete in the Horsham & District Youth Football League and the South Surrey Youth Football league, as well as many tournaments over the summer months. Richard Pearce, Manager of Billingshurst Youth Football Club’s Under 12s, commented: “We are delighted that Station Garage

has come on board as our official sponsor and cannot thank them enough for their generous donation. The boys are beside themselves with their professional new training tops. It may seem like a simple gesture to some, but for our players, it is a real confidence boost and it really has made all the difference in their game.” James Thorpe, Dealer Principal at Station Garage, added: “When we were presented with the opportunity to team up with the BIllingshurst youth team, we were thrilled. Team spirit means everything, whether you apply that to business or on the pitch, and it is something, as a family-run company, we pride ourselves on. I think all the players look really smart in their new training tops and wish them all the best for the season ahead.”

meeting people. Back here, it is hard to imagine the sheer volume of people in the cities. Even smaller cities no-one has ever heard of in this country have populations 15 times that of Sussex. Amongst this ceaseless bustle there are plenty of smiles and courtesy. Curiosity too. About us. The Big Noses as they jokingly call we westerners. They gave me quite a complex. Millions of their folk have never seen a westerner up close. This propels mere ordinary mortals like me into totally unjustified celebrity status on the streets. At 6ft 1ins when I keep my back straight, I had several George Clooney moments when beautiful young woman with exotic eyes that I could have got lost in asked to be photographed with me. It would have been impolite to refuse, I explained to my wife. Perhaps my vanity got the better of me when an alluring young woman stood beside me for a photograph. As the shutter clicked she produced a box of socks for the snap. I had become zero contract advertising model

guide told me. I was left wondering what the advertising gurus might do with a picture of a 66-year-old silver haired man posing with a beauty in her early 20s and a box of socks. There are thousands of scooters darting around the streets mostly silent and deadly with electric engines that make no noise. The most people I counted on one machine was a family of four. I was confused by Confucius temples, huffed and puffed at the alarming steepness of the Great Wall and marvelled at the scale and detail of the Terracotta Warriors. My taste buds seared to the heat of Yam soup, and I got used to pork stuffed buns (or small dumplings) for breakfast. And I discovered the confusion that increasing capitalism can cause, albeit in a humorous way. The story goes that a wealthy man could only raised 99,998 yuan for a new car. Finding himself 2 yuan (about 25p) short he asked a beggar for it. The beggar replied: “Here is four yuan. Get me a car too.” Fascinating place, China.

Triplet mum tribute run earns title The squad

THE CATHEDRALS EXPRESS

NOSTALGIC DAY OUT BY STEAM FROM HORSHAM

Lorna and Steve

ELY CATHEDRAL FOR CAROLS

A campaigning mother of triplets who fought for NHS support for her disabled baby daughter has won a title as top fund raiser. Lorna Cobbett and her husband Steve, from Horsham, completed a hospice’s annual run to pay tribute and say “thank you” for the support it provides to their nine-month-old daughter Essie, who suffered a severe brain injury at birth, leaving her severely disabled and needing round the clock care. Now Lorna and her team of first-time runners have been named as the top fundraisers in the Chestnut Tree House 10k run. The couple, from Horsham, successfully fought for NHS care so they could bring Essie home from hospital, and the youngster is now reunited with her family while enjoying sessions at the hospice. Together the pair raised more than £1,600 running as Team Essie and they are planning on taking part in the 10k at Littlehampton every year as part of their daughter’s legacy. Lorna, 37, whose other children are Roman and Eva, said of the hospice: “Whatever we can do for them, from a fundraising perspective, is a small amount compared to what they have done for us. “Essie has stayed at the hospice quite a lot, where she’s known as Princess Essie, and we also have a lot of support from them as a family. They come out and do babysitting for us, we get counselling from the chaplain, who is amazing, and they’re really good at letting us use their hydrotherapy pool – we can’t say thank you enough.” Fellow runners the Horsham Joggers Learn to Run team were named top group fundraisers after collecting donations that totalled more than £2,700. The nine-strong team all crossed the finishing line with personal bests, as the race marked their first 10k, and said the experience was brilliant. Team captain Rachel Detnon added: “It was absolutely amazing and the buzz from everyone else carried us along, especially on the last bit. “It’s something we’ll do next year, it’s a really lovely run to do and we’ll aim to improve our PBs

for 2017.” The Joggers were delighted with their fundraising total, which “smashed” their expectations, and was given a boost after team member Andy Robins had his donations match-funded by his workplace, Aspect Capital. Lorna and Steve, 38, were equally pleased with their total, which they raised through sponsorship from friends and family, and their time of 1:01. “We want to make the 10k the annual fundraising we do in my daughter’s legacy and get together Team Essie every September to take over the streets of Littlehampton,” Lorna added. “And hopefully going forward

we’d like to raise at least a similar amount of money just to say thank you for everything Chestnut Tree House do for us.” Nicky Ifould, Events Fundraiser at Chestnut Tree House, said: “Lorna, Steve and the Horsham Joggers were fantastic fundraisers and we were absolutely over the moon with their totals, every penny of which will go directly to our work supporting seriously ill youngsters. Huge thanks to them and all of our wonderful runners who took part on the day – every donation really does count.” Current opportunities to run for the hospice can be viewed on www.chestnut-tree-house.org. uk/run

More constables coming Sussex Police is ‘good’ at keeping people safe and reducing crime despite losing nearly £100 million from its budget. That is the view of the latest assessment by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary in its “Efficiency” report. The force says it welcomes the independent scrutiny and values being consistently judged as ‘good’ in the service it delivers. Deputy Chief Constable Bernie O’Reilly said: “We have made the HMIC fully aware of our change and investment plans to provide an efficient and effective service against a challenging financial backdrop. “We are changing the way we do things, built on a good understanding of the needs of the public and the skills of our staff. Our plans are

flexible so that we can review and invest where needed in the future. “We have made significant savings of £56m over the last five years whilst fully protecting neighbourhood policing. We have a further £35m we need to save over the next four years. “The force is increasing the number of firearms officers across Sussex and the number of investigators who help protect vulnerable adults and children. “It is by enhancing roles, working differently and collaborating with partners, that we will respond to and resolve issues more quickly, reduce wasted effort and work to provide a more effective and consistent service for victims and the local community as we become a smaller organisation.”

He added: “Our refocused Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) role has only been in place since July, with them working flexibly and providing an effective presence based on where crime occurs. They have been using their new powers and enhanced skills to help reduce crime and antisocial behaviour. “More recently as an example in Tarner Park in Brighton they have brought residents and teenagers who use the park together to come up with solutions to help resolve some of their issues and complaints. Their proactive problem solving skills are brought into effect wherever needed. “To continue to keep people safe and ensure resilience, where there are vacancies, we are actively recruiting. We have recently run a recruitment campaign for police constables and from 14 November PCSO recruitment will go live, with 30 being sought. By January 2017 we will have 196 PCSOs in the force, which will be the full complement under our new model. “Sussex Police is an emergency service and we will be there 24/7, preventing crime by working more effectively, embracing technology and working closely with the community and partners. “It’s important to stress that the number of officers who respond to emergency calls for help remains the same - we will always be there when people need us.”

Take another look at housing scheme, say residents Residents had misgivings about the large development proposed north of Horsham when they attended an Extraordinary Parish Council meeting to discuss the issue. Thirty four members of the public attended the Holbrook Tythe Barn on Pondtail Road to consider an initial response to the planning application for the development north of Horsham. And worries about adequate health facilities and the too-low level of “affordable” housing featured in comments. Those in attendance were supportive of the North Horsham Parish Council’s comments which were unanimously agreed and will now be submitted to Horsham District Council. The Parish Council recommended to the developer that strong consideration should be given to re-routing the A264 north of the development site and providing a natural boundary to the development north of Horsham. This would allow the existing A264 to be downgraded to a distributor route. Although costly, it would provide a better solution.

www.placesforpeopleleisure.org

The amount of “affordable” housing was unacceptable and housing to meet other needs appeared to have been omitted. The Parish Council challenged the feasibility of a business park for high value manufacturing and technology, but recognised that the business park was vital for the viability of the development. It was concerned that whilst it appears land is available for a new secondary school, primary school and special educational needs on a school campus, there has been no indication of how the buildings will be provided or who will take responsibility for them in the future. Similarly the Parish Council expressed its disappointment that there is a lack of specified commitment to health within the application and the Parish Council supported the work of the Clinical Commissioning Group and their effort to ensure that an appropriate health facility commensurate to the size and needs of the local population is provided. A copy of the full response is available on the Parish Council website www.northhorshampc.gov.uk .

Footballers and rugby players in the pink Football and rugby players staged a dance spectacular to launch their school’s fund raising event. It was part of the efforts of Steyning Sixth Form College for its annual fundraising event in aid of Breast Cancer Research. The day of fundraising was launched with a ‘Pink Day Dance Spectacular’ where the Sixth Form College first and second football and rugby teams performed a special dance Routine in pink outfits and performed a dance medley. This event forms part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month introduced in 1993 as a Worldwide Campaign by Evelyn Lauder of the Estee Lauder cosmetic family to help support people affected by the disease, raise funds for re-

search and to increase awareness. This charity fundraising day is co-ordinated each year by the Sixth Form College students and involves all year seven to 13 students and staff across the school, who have joined together to wear as many items of pink clothing as possible. The dance spectacular was specially choreographed by Caitlin Cheeseman, Ciara Rosell, Alice Evans and Lizzie Smith, who are all A-level Dance students, assisted by AS Dance students who have dedicated much of their time to the many dance rehearsals. Further performances were given at lunch time for Year nine to 11 pupils. Students reflected on the Wear it Pink campaign: “We will wear

it to stop our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends dying from breast cancer. We will look bold, beautiful and brilliantly silly. We will wear it with passion. We will wear it with pride. We will wear it pink.” All Sixth Form Students were given a presentation produced by Y12 A-level Health and Social Care students; Charlotte Bowbrick, Arvinder Brar and Aliya Stratford and delivered as part of the College Personal Health and Social Education Programme. The total funds raised across the school amounted to £3,852.79 These funds will assist in funding local mammogram screening for early breast cancer detection. Scenes from the fund-raiser are pictured.

Children from two schools have been preparing to join in the Armistice Day service in Horsham today. They will plant crosses this morning (Friday) in memory of those from a distant generation who died in the First World War. In addition to Remembrance Sunday, the Horsham Branch of the Royal British Legion will hold a short ceremony at the War Memorial in the Carfax in Horsham on November 11 for those who wish to remember at the ‘eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month’. carried out. The materials purchased for the task were hazel wands and stakes, plus 30 tonnes of chalk. During the spring and summer our hard working volunteers first learned the skills needed, then put them into practice. This included driving hazel stakes into the side of the river bed and weaving hazel wands between them to make a sturdy barrier, then backfilling with the 30 tonnes of chalk. In all, a stretch of 150 metres has been protected. This project took 10 working parties and countless loads of chalk wheelbarrowed and deposited. It was celebrated with cups of coffee. It is hoped that many walkers will enjoy using the path, now made secure for the future.”

Oil drilling bring benefits

Leisure Centre update Sports fans are a stage nearer getting a new £12.3 million sports centre at Broadbridge Heath after a decision by councillors. Tenders are being drawn up for the building of the centre after Horsham District Development Management (North) Committee unanimously agreed to support the proposals for a new sports and leisure centre. They delegated authority to officers to issue the planning decision at the close of consultation today, November 11. The councils says that the development will deliver the biggest public “dry-side” sports and leisure centre in the district and will see a major new facility built to replace the existing Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre. Gift pays for improvements at club

Help find second man

Steyning FC

Football fans and players will have improved safety and security after a gift to their titlechasing club. Steyning Police has donated £500 to Steyning Town Community Football Club from a special fund to go towards clubhouse safety improvements including fire alarm systems and improved security. Richard Woodbridge, the football club’s chairman, said: “We are very grateful for this donation. The clubhouse will be used by many local people in the community and we needed to make improvements. Our new superb

3G pitch now has a refurbished clubhouse to go with it.” The donation comes from the Police Property Act Fund, which is made up of monies received by the police from property confiscated by order of the court and then sold. Inspector Dave Shepard said: “Steyning Town is a community focused club and we are happy to make this small donation to support them following the improvements they have made to their clubhouse and pitch.” The club’s first team, based at the Shooting Field, Steyning, is chasing the Southern Combina-

tion League Division One title this season. Its greatest season was 1985-6 when it completed an historic treble with a clean sweep of all the major titles in Sussex football, the Sussex County League Division One title, the Sussex Senior Cup and the League Cup. Steyning FC was formed in 1892, as one of the founder members of the West Sussex League. It then played in the Brighton and Hove District League, the Sussex County League, the Wessex League and the Combined Counties Football League before returning to the County League, now known as the Southern Combination League.

Police are appealing for witnesses to a burglary at a house in Hampers Lane, Storrington. The home owners had been out but when they returned home on October 30 at 4pm, they found two men there who immediately fled the scene. Police were called and after a brief search a man was located in nearby woods and subsequently arrested and charged. The second man was not found. He is described in a police statement as white, 6’, slim, aged between 20 and 30 and wearing a dark hooded top and dark trousers. Detective Constable Gavin Percival said: “If you saw any-

thing unusual or any suspicious vehicle, particularly any silver 4x4 that was in the area at the time, please contact us.” Any witness or anyone with information is asked to email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or ring 101 quoting serial 1128 of 30/10. *Joseph Carr, 51, of Brasslands Drive, Portslade, has been charged with committing burglary at a house in Hampers Lane on 30 October and stealing £30 cash. He appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on 1 November and was remanded in custody to appear at Lewes Crown Court on 29 November.

Carers reminded about flu jabs

Carers in Horsham district are being encouraged to get a flu vaccination to protect both themselves and the person they care for this winter. In West Sussex the flu vaccine is available free to groups that are identified as being most at risk, including those aged 65 years and over; people aged 6 months - 64 years with long term conditions; pregnant women; children aged two, three and four and children in school years one, two and three and everyone living in a residential or nursing home. Carers are also entitled to get the jab for free and can get it at their local GP surgery or participating pharmacy. West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Community

Wellbeing Christine Field said: “It is often easy to forget that as a carer there is just as much need to get the flu vaccination for yourself as there is to get it for the person you’re caring for. “The carer’s role is so important and if you catch the flu, it could affect your ability to provide the invaluable support you usually give the person you care for. “So remember, when booking the flu jab for the person you care for, book yourself in as well so that you can both stay well this winter.” You can find out if you are eligible and more information on seasonal flu at www. westsussexwellbeing.org.uk/ fight-flu.

School might drop SATS despite exam success Success, but second thoughts

A Horsham school might drop the controversial SATS examinations because it is unhappy about changes. Controversy over the exams did not prevent pupils at Farlington independent school tackling them with success. But now the school is considering dropping them because the latest reincarnation does not tell staff what they need to know about pupil performance. Year 6 pupils are entered for the Government’s end of Key Stage 2 standard assessment tests, or SATS, in maths, reading and grammar, punctuation and spelling. As a non-state school they are not legally required to do so. The school said: “Despite all of last year’s controversies surround-

ing these, including the revised, demanding and factheavy curriculum, we still went ahead; instructing, supporting and preparing the girls for ‘SATs’, as they are commonly known. “So why exactly did we choose to put girls through a set of tests which, as non-maintained sector pupils, they are not required to undertake? “Sitting SATs has become a ‘rite of passage’ for 10- and 11-year- old children in this country. “Results should give comparable measures of standards, right across the country. Whilst we acknowledge that we do not take part in the moderation of our results, the girls and their parents get a firm indication of just how well they are doing compared to others of their age.

“Students learn how to revise and prepare for the sorts of highstakes testing that they will meet later on, at GCSE and A Level. Preparing for SATs keeps all the girls working hard towards an important summer goal. “It challenges many and, in the past, has allowed the very high achievers to excel. But it added: “With no possibility now of scoring Level 6, however, there is less of a case for taking the tests and we shall need to decide whether to replace the Government tests with an assessment more fit for purpose. Whilst the tests assess children against a national standard, results look different this year from previous years and cannot be compared directly; they have been reported using a scaled score instead of Levels, with a mark of 100 or more meaning, ‘working at or above the expected standard in the subject’. “Despite not taking part in the moderation process, 77.4% of our girls gained above threshold in all three of this year’s SATs tests, comparing very favourably with the national statistic for this same achievement of 53%. “As yet the DFE has published very little information as to their view of the overall results for the new format SATs, but with more than ¾ of our girls gaining above the threshold for all three tests, this certainly must merit congratulations for our Prep School pupils’ and teachers’ fine efforts.”

Extra staff to help those who struggle with life People struggling with combined mental health and physical problems are to be given extra staff from health services serving Horsham. Many people live with a combination of conditions such as diabetes or heart disease and mental health challenges. Now organisations delivering community health services in Horsham, Crawley, and Mid Sussex and other areas have linked with Time to Talk, a West Sussex talking therapies service, to use recently awarded extra funding to help people get psychological therapies to help them. The award will increase staffing levels and help the NHS clinical commissioning groups, as they are known, meet the challenge of developing innovative ways of working. The announcement comes as the three West Sussex NHS groups are rated as Performing Well in Mental Health in the

new clinical commission group Improvement and Assessment Framework for 2016/17, with the NHS Horsham and Mid Sussex group the top performing area in the South East. The framework assesses groups in two key areas of mental health; including recovery from conditions such as anxiety or depression after at least two treatment contacts of talking therapies, and patients starting treatment for a first episode of psychosis within two weeks of referral. Tom Insley, Senior Manager for Mental Health Commissioning for Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex, said: “These targets are about getting assessments done early so we can ensure patients get the help they need early – something that is really important in mental health services. Our local Early Intervention in Psychosis service has recently expanded to include interventions like family therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.”

Horsham Town residents have their say Andrew Cooke, Vice Chair at Horsham Blueprint Neighbourhood Forum, issued a statement to thank participants in a recent interim report survey. Over 300 people completed the survey, either online or by hard copy. With 50 individual questions, the forum explained that the survey will take some time to analyse and assimilate, as they develop the Neighbourhood Plan. However, there are a number of “highlights” from the survey that they are able to share now. Of those respondents who expressed an opinion: 67% say that having a say in decisions affecting Horsham is important to them; 75% say that the Neighbourhood Plan should allocate sites for affordable housing; 84% say all new residential properties should have at least one allocated parking space; 98% support the preservation of existing open spaces and parks; 54% indicated that the cost of car parking influenced how often they went into Horsham; 45% believed that more should be done to promote Horsham as a tourist destination, although 28% disagreed and 27% have no opinion on the matter. When asked, “what do you like about Horsham?” a wide variety of responses were received. The forum offered a few which they think best captures why

people love Horsham: “Sense of community and friendliness/ kindness, the fact that it is clean and generally well cared for, Horsham park and other open spaces, generally feel safe”, “It’s a wonderful town at present, with access to

beautiful countryside”, “Horsham has a good vibe and lots of great events and a great market, these are all amazing!” And in the interest of balance – a few things that people are concerned about: “Waitrose should have remained where it was. The new location makes it too far to get to easily.”, “Exorbitant parking charges in the town centre. Hard to see why

one should have to pay £2.40 to park in Swan Walk car park, even if you are there for 30 minutes. Why does the car park not have a graduating scale of fees... so you only pay for the time you are there, rather than one charge for the first 2 hours? This simply discourages people from coming to town.”; “Ever increasing number of residents/ flats/houses but very little provision for infrastructure to cope with it. The South East is poorly served for a choice of essential shopping, now that Waitrose has moved. I don’t feel the Council puts enough effort into public consultations on issues of planning.” So what does all this information, gleaned by the Survey, mean for the Plan? Andrew Cooke explained: “The analysis is ongoing; but what we’ve reviewed, so far, reinforces the comments and observations, made to the Forum, at the wide range of events and venues across the town over the last couple of years, providing us with a robust body of evidence upon which to develop the Plan. So whilst the Plan won’t be able to address everything that has been raised, it will seek to maintain, and even enhance, what people love about the town, whilst mitigating or even eliminating those issues which cause concern.”

I have been trying therecipes out for some time and I am finally ready to share with more than just my friends and family. I really wanted to grow a business which my wife and kids can be proud of. “I am focussed on sourcing all my produce locally and ethically and creating exciting gourmet steak sandwiches worth coming back for time and time again.” Grahame says Great Expectation’s menu is all about show-casing the meat, served up in craft breads withhomemade sauces and fantastic salads. How Much Should You Charge Your Customers??

janette whitney Business Consultant www.whitneyassocs.co.uk

This month our Award Winning business expert and author Janette Whitney gives advice on how to choose the right price for your product or service. One of the most difficult, yet important, issues you must decide as an entrepreneur is how much to charge for your product or service. While there is no one single right way to determine your pricing strategy, here are some important points to bear in mind. Your price sends out strong messages to your customers and affects the way they view the quality of your product or service. Many small businesses make the mistake of undervaluing their product, and starting out at too low a price simply to ‘get a foot in the door’. If you do this, it can cause 3 main problems for your business: 1. It stops you making as much

profit as you could. 2. It establishes you as lower quality in your customers’ eyes 3. Once you are established, it is very difficult to change customers’ perceptions of you as ‘cheap’, and to get them to accept price increases. Conversely, if your customers value your product at below the price you need to charge to make a profit, you have some serious thinking to do. Beware the trap of pricing to match or undercut your competitors. This too, has its problems; it can start destructive price wars and again has nothing to do with actual customer needs and perceptions. It’s absolutely vital to know your competition in order to sell your products to their best advantage, but don’t just learn about their products and pricing. Whatever you use to sell your offering is important – the level of service, how it is sold, any customer loyalty devices etc. What are their weaknesses? This all helps to justify your price position

or change it if necessary. It is also important to know if there are any new entrants to the market to ensure you retain your unique selling point (USP) – which may actually be your price. Your price must contain 3 elements: 1. Cost to produce 2. Cost of time/people to get it to the customer 3. Your profit margin Remember price is a marketing issue because it sends your customers a strong message about your image and branding. For example, people might pay a couple of pence extra to have a ring-pull on their can of baked beans, and many will pay a few pence more on top of that for the fact that its Heinz brand. You may vary your pricing, depending on your goals. For example, you might charge a lower introductory price for a short period of time to attract a large number of new customers. If in doubt, price on the high side. It’s always easier to discount prices than to raise them. The most important point is that your clients perceive that they are getting value for money. Local entertainer, Stephen Foster, from Billingshurst, best known for his stand up comedy as seen on Sky1s ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, sadly lost his father to cancer in October of last year, and has wanted to do something special, in his memory, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, ever since. Stephen has been performing a tribute to David Bowie for a few years now and, in March this year, he put on a one-off show in Billingshurst, which raised just short of £1000 for the charity. This time round, the 26 year old wanted to take the show a bit further, performing at 4 local Sussex venues, with the aim to quadruple the figure made in March. Having already performed at Pulborough Village Hall, the remaining venue details are as follows: Fri 11 Nov: Horsham Sports and Cricket Club (tickets from sports and cricket club, Party Shop Hor-

sham and online at www.wegottickets.com) Fri 18 Nov: Horley Archway Theatre (tickets from www.archwaytheatre.co.uk) Sat 26 Nov: Billingshurst Centre (tickets from Austens Home Hardware Billingshurst and online at www.wegottickets.com) Stephen will be performing all of David Bowie’s biggest hits from his extensive career, including Space Oddity, Changes, Life On Mars, Starman, Rebel Rebel, Fame, Heroes, Ashes To Ashes, Under Pressure, Lets Dance and Absolute Beginners - to name just a few! There will also be some fan favourites and songs from Bowie’s critically acclaimed 2016 album ‘Blackstar’. The show promises to be a real glam rocking night out and fun for all the family. There will be prize raffles and licenced bars at each venue with all proceeds to Macmillan.

Celebrating 25 Years of T.Rextasy Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era. With Bolan’s special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs throughout the 1970s, including ‘Telegram Sam’ and ‘Jeepster’, he was able to obtain what would be yet another Top 20 record, in 1976, that has since become one of the most memorable and everlasting signature tunes, ‘I Love to Boogie’. T.Rextasy have been performing all over the world for 25 years, a career that ironically out-lives Marc’s very own T.Rex. In 2017, the band returns to venues across the UK, to transport audiences back to the ‘70s, for the Marc Bolan 40th commemorative anniversary tour. Accepted as the world’s only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan & T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan’s family, estate, original ex-mem-

bers of T.Rex, and Bolan’s catalogue management, T.Rextasy have been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’. The skilled musicianship of Danielz (Vocals & Lead Guitar), Neil Cross (Rhythm Guitars, Backing Vocals), Rob Butterfield (Bass Guitar, Backing Vocals) and John Skelton (Drums) lets the timeless music and legacy of Marc Bolan and T.Rex live on. This full-on concert showcases all the big hits and more, with both electric and acoustic performances, faithfully recreating the energy and performance of Marc Bolan and T.Rex. Bringing audiences to their feet across the globe, the whole family will enjoy the experience of being transported back to the ‘70s to re-live the experience of attending a Marc Bolan live concert. Performance: Friday 20 January at 7.30pm, The Capitol Horsham. Tickets: Available by visiting The Capitol Box Office: www.thecapitolhorsham.com or calling: 01403 750220

The Railway pub in Billingshurst held a Macmillan Cancer Relief Joke Club, which featured Britain’s Got Talent finalist Danny Posthill, with Rudi Lickwood, Sarah Iles and Phil Reid.

This very entertaining evening, together with a raffl, raised £132.80 for local Macmillan Cancer Support. The local Macmillan fundraising group said it would like to thank

all who attended and The Railway for hosting the event. Pictured are Nathan King from the Railway, Terri Ashpool and Shenna Taylor from Macmillan, Danny Posthill and Sarah Isles.

BARNSTORMERS BIG SUNDAE Sunday 20 November 7.30pm

November sees the Barnstormers’ annual sojourn into the main auditorium at the Horsham Capitol, in order that they might present a bigger show - hence the name. It provides an opportunity to showcase stand-ups with more prominence in relation to the circuit and beyond (i.e. TV and radio credits). It’s an impressive line up and one not to be missed. The acts are: the star of the recently released and highly acclaimed Ken Loach Palme D’Or winning movie, ‘I, Daniel Blake’, Dave Johns, ‘He shifts from the sublime, to genius, to uproar in the blink of an eye - An extremely entertaining hour’ - The Guardian; talented topical stand-up, as featured on - amongst others - ‘Mock the Week’, Ian Stone, ‘one of the top ten stand-ups in Britain’ - The Independent; and, as seen on ‘Live at the Comedy Store’, the delightfully offbeat Markus BIrdman, ‘Birdman is the all-round package; witty, controversial, hip, topical, silly. A master of timing and physical comedy, he made me laugh so hard, it hurt’ - BBC. As ever, resident Barnstormers’ MC, Kevin

Precious, will be on hand to oversee the whole kit and caboodle. For dates and booking infor-

mation, please call The Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220 or visit: www.thecapitolhorsham.com

Beautiful homes at Beaufort Place

Sales are off to a strong start at the new Barratt Homes development of Beaufort Place in Ifield. The show house, which opened recently, has inspired buyers to make their move to the brandnew homes from one of the UK’s best known housebuilders. “Family living was the inspiration behind this design,” says Katie Pilgrim of The Real Image which created the interior design scheme. “We wanted to show how the house is ideal for family, young and old, and how the space could be used while making sure the interior design was likeable for the majority of visitors of all ages.” Katie chose to base the colour theme on natural taupe with accents of ‘tangerine’ as she explains, “The warm earthy colours

of the taupes and greys give a warm, sophisticated feel whilst the tangerine bought colour and impact without dominating the design. Using the copper pieces and contrasting them with black and chrome kept the design modern as copper is the new chrome!” Whilst Katie and her colleagues are delighted with the finished show home, she particularly highlights the piece of wall art and mirror in the lounge for special interest based on its blend of modern styling mixed with added sophistication. Beaufort Place provides a wide choice of homes to suit different preferences, including one and two bedroom apartments alongside 2, 3 and 4 bedroom terraced, semi-detached and detached

houses, many with garages. Susan Wadsworth of appointed selling agents Henry Adams adds, “We’re delighted with the response of buyers to the show home here at Beaufort Place which has really captured buyers’ imaginations. As a result, many of the homes in the first release have already been reserved. “New homes offer efficient, modern design for today’s lifestyles with everything brand new from the kitchens & bathrooms to all the decor. With such a wide range of well-designed homes to choose from and financial schemes such as Help to Buy on offer, it’s easy to see why buyers are attracted to a home at Beaufort Place.” With the first phase of prop-

erties quickly snapped up, the new release of homes are priced from £344,995 for a thoughtfully designed three bedroom detached house to £369,995 for spacious three bedroom townhouse, both with garages and parking. Barratt Homes also offer Help to Buy, the government backed scheme designed to help secure a new home with a 5% deposit plus a 20% equity loan from the government. The Beaufort Place show home is open from Thursday to Sunday from 10am to 5.30pm and on Mondays from 12 to 5.30pm (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays). To arrange an appointment to view please call Henry Adams New Homes on 01243 521833 or visit www. henryadams.co.uk.

Horsham Ladies deliver strong away win South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Woking Ladies 0 - 2 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham began strongly with a full press unsettling Woking’s young side and pulling off a much needed clean sheet win, moving them four points clear of ninth placed Staines. Alexandra Malzer scored two excellent first half field goals, giving Horsham a useful cushion

at the break - 16 year old Alexandra from Warnham is on England Hockey’s radar and has played in every Horsham game so far this season. Horsham’s Sam Stares told the District Post: “Our new coach, former England player Lewis Morgan, tested us out, assessing our ability by playing some of us in unaccustomed positions, which was a challenge! They had a big crowd of noisy supporters who spurred them on and we did well to keep them out in the second half.” Gee Humphreys, another 16 year old, added: “Woking haven’t been

Alexandra Malzer scored twice for Horsham

playing well but they stepped up their game after Alexandra’s great goals. Our Captain Hannah Simpson had another outstanding game as keeper and we defended well. In this league our new side has been playing against experienced women twice my age but we’re really coming together as a team now.” Surbiton top the table with 17 points, narrowly shading Barnes. Horsham Ladies are back on the road again tomorrow (Saturday) with a trip to fourth in the table Wimbledon who beat Oxford University Ladies 1-0 last week.

Horsham Cycling is riding high Hawks teams maintain their winning ways

Horsham Cycling continues to thrive

Basketball Dave Snith - Sports Editor

Cycling Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Cycling are having another good year with membership over the 250 mark, the highest ever level, enjoying a rich variety of events. Horsham Cycling is open to riders of all abilities and interests with a range of social activities including the summer post ride lunch, regular pub get-togethers and the forthcoming Christmas dinner and awards night at Rookwood Golf Club – on December 8, when prizes will be presented to the winners of thirteen categories. Sunday morning rides are the lynch pin of HC’s calendar with seven groups of differing capabilities setting off at 9am – and to satisfy demand from members, Saturday rides have been introduced, meeting at the Conservatory Café in Horsham Park. Away weekends have also proved popular – with a trip to Winchester in

April, the Isle of Wight in September, attended by 21 members, and Belgium in October when the local club joined the Horsham visitors. July’s Dunwich Dynamo – a 112 mile night ride through London’s east end out to Suffolk was another highlight for HC riders with guests from Cranleigh CC and Crawley Wheelers, mini bus support and an accompanying van to ferry cycles back to Sussex. . Twenty time trials were staged over multi terrains between April and October, more newcomers than ever before participating, including inaugural inter-club events with Cranleigh and Dorking counterparts. Some members enjoy road racing enabling them to move up through the national categories to compete at higher, faster levels. And, in July, there was the Social Group’s Downhill Challenge near Dial Post, followed by post challenge celebrations at Stan’s Bike Shack at Partridge

Boro sneak eighth straight win – just! London 3 South East Ashford 24 - 25 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter On paper this should have been a straightforward win for high flying Pulborough, six points clear on top of the table, against penultimate Ashford, but, with 11 second teamers on the pitch Boro only snatched victory at the very death. Injuries and perhaps a reluctance to travel to mid Kent for a potentially one sided game almost cost Boro dear. They trailed 15-10 at the break and were never in the lead until a decisive last ditch penalty gave them the game. Earlier, Boro’s tries came from Will Akers, Al Ryan, Chris Whyte and Ewan Calloway, George Lee kicking the hardest conversion – and the crucial penalty. Clayton Saunders, a mighty relieved Boro

Head Coach, told the District Post: “A win’s a win and we got a bonus point but, for the first time this season, we lacked team cohesion – hardly surprising when we had so many changes. Ashford were in London SE 2 last season so, although we’re on top of the table there’s no need for us to be complacent. It was disappointing that we had to raid the seconds so heavily because they’ve been going well and are hoping for promotion, but with a heavily weakened side they lost this week.” Boro are in cup action tomorrow (Saturday) when they host Battersea Ironsides in the second round of the RFU Senior Vase. Ironsides are currently fifth with a tight points difference in the corresponding London 3 SW League. Then, on November 19 Boro have a top of the table home league clash with current runners up Thanet Wanderers.

Green. Then, in October came the hill climb at Denbies. Members are enjoying another year of Cyclocross having recently competed at Sumners Pond, Barns Green. HC Chairman John Chaplin again organised his “long Johns”, explaining to The District Post: “For the last three years I’ve done monthly rides of 100-125 miles and it’s been great because there are over 20 members interested, so I’ve never ridden alone. Each year I’ve picked a theme – such as castles, palaces and cathedrals, ensuring that such places are visited. Another theme was water – encompassing rivers, canals, lakes, the sea and reservoirs and I’m mulling over where I might go next year – forests and hills may be the concept!” Horsham Cycling members have completed sessions of guidance for ride leaders and another programme of winter indoor training is under consideration. There will be four Reliability Time Trials over the winter, firstly on Sunday November 20, to Newhaven, Shoreham and Cranleigh. John Chaplin sums up by saying: “Horsham Cycling welcomes new members – further details of our rides and activities can be found on the website www.horshamcycling.co.uk and my email address is john.chaplin@horshamcycling. co.uk”.

Horsham Hawks U14 89 - 51 Crawley Crusaders U14 After a big win away to Brighton the Horsham Hawks U14 came home to beat Crawley Crusaders 89-51. The Hawks got off to a strong start scoring the first eleven points of the game before a 6-4 Crawley response closed the gap. Fin Bennett came off the bench after three months out with an injury to score and toughen up the defence as Hawks ended the first quarter 19-8 ahead. Horsham extended their lead to 32-10 in the second quarter that they held to take a 40-18 advantage into the interval. The third quarter was a more even affair but a series of defensive errors gifted Crawley eight points as the deficit was reduced to 65-41. Horsham then finished in style to seal the tremendous 89-51 victory.

Horsham Hawks U16 97 – 52 Brighton Cougars U16 A spectacular display from Horsham Hawks U16 against Brighton Cougars saw them to their third successive victory with an impressive 97 - 52 win. With an array of offensive options Hawks took the early imitative and finished the first quarter with a 25-12 lead. The furious pace of the first quarter continued into the second as Hawks maintained their attacking style. Despite the onslaught Cougars remained a threat but a half time 50 - 28 lead for Hawks was a fair reflection of the home team’s dominance. The third quarter was much more even with both sides trading baskets which allowed Hawks to keep their advantage and finish he quarter with a 70 – 47 lead. The final quarter saw Hawks back to their dominant best outscoring Cougars by 27 to 5 and finishing just short of the 100 point mark with a 97 – 52 victory.

Horsham disappointed to lose after taking lead South League Premier – Division 1 London Edwardians 2 - 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham dropped three places to tenth, following the concession of two second half goals after being one nil up at the break. Horsham’s Sam MacDonald opened the scoring mid-way through the first half when he converted John Burroughs’s cross. With sound defence and consistent command, Horsham main-

tained the narrow advantage up to the break. But, superiority can change quickly at Horsham’s new level and although they continued to enjoy good second half possession, an opportunist goal put London Eds on level terms when a cross came over from a seemingly impossible angle to be finished off with a soft tap in. Then, almost immediately, came heartbreak for Horsham when a failed clearance was latched onto to give Eds the lead, Tim Craven firing home from close range. Horsham responded positively but were frustrated when Eds successfully closed the game down to take the

points. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “We need to maintain concentration for the whole game. We were in Eds’ D at least 20 times but only earned 2 shorts. It’s good that we’re getting close but we need to convert and avoid the sort of mistakes that we made today”. Horsham return home tomorrow (Saturday) to welcome another side from Battersea – London Wayfarers, 11th in the table with just one win from six starts. Wayfarers lost 4-1 to Oxford Hawks last week.

Horsham battle through to tough win Will Bell kicked 3 conversions and 2 penalties

London 2 South East Old Alleynians 32 - 37 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham (sixth) have had series of close games and this one was no different - against Old Alleynians, one below them in the table when the team took the field on Dulwich Common. But, Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker told the District Post: “It

was tighter than we hoped – we had dominance in the scrum but with no reward. OAs are good in open play situations and good leaders on the park so we needed to starve them of the ball, but initially we fed them too much. But, there’s still a long way to go and we’re a handily placed, sixth in the table on level points to fifth club Beckenham.” Horsham took an early lead but OAs fought back and by half time Horsham had their noses just in

Joggers host last fixture of the season Athletics Phil Liberman - Horsham Joggers Last weekend was Horsham Joggers home fixture in the West Sussex Fun Run League and also the last fixture of the season. The brand new course was run over the Denne hill and Chesworth farm areas covering a four and a half mile cross country course. There was a fantastic turnout of 355 runners and the home team rounded off the season with a creditable 6th place out of the 18 teams, a fine achievement as so many Joggers were volunteering to help the run go

off without a hitch. Matt Mason was first Jogger home in 11th place in 28.41, followed by Alex Evans 29.30, John Willcox 31.23, Sam Lloyd Smith 34.24, Lin Whiting 35.42, Steve Wilson 36.14, Beck Howard 36.27, Paul Thornton 38.05, Derek Buckman 38.20, Jo Hopkins 39.51, Tom Ikin 39.58, Dave Dawson 40.19, John Booker 41.00, Fiona Dalrymple Hay 42.24, Dawn Filson 43.28, Vikki Stevens 43.30, Jamie Carter 44.28, Fiona Clifton 45.46, Jade Wilkinson 45.48, Carol Brown 53.19 and Hannah Munden 68.43.

kicking three conversions and two penalties. Previously eliminated from the cup, Horsham have no game this weekend and will take the opportunity to re-group. They return to league competition with a home fixture against tenth in the table Heathfield & Waldron next Saturday, November 19, when senior players will have returned from holiday. ted first for Chesworth followed shortly by Finlay Ellis who tapped home before Vipers pulled one back. The first 10 minutes of the second half saw 4 Chesworth goals from Toby Shepheard, Callum Palmer and a brace from Josh Hayes. Vipers then netted twice before Regan Hiller and Callum Palmer extended the lead before Vipers hit a late consolation. MOM Callum Palmer. Chesworth Rovers U13 6 - 0 Three Bridges U13 Chesworth were in action again on Sunday in the Sussex Cup against Three Bridges. Regan Hiller bagged himself a first half hat-trick and the man of the match award. Finlay Ellis ten scored a wonderful individual effort before Josh Hayes made it five and then finally Toby Shepheard scored with a screamer to send Chesworth through to the next round. Steyning Town Community U16 2 - 2 Chesworth Rovers U16 Chesworth Rovers and Steyning Town fought out a pulsating draw on Town’s new 3G pitch, the Chesworth ‘keeper Matt Eades making at least four outstanding saves and a penalty stop to keep the score at 0-0 at the break. Steyning took the lead with 12 minutes to go but then Chesworth scored twice through Morgan Hayward and Michael Murray but were denied by a last-minute equaliser. Lancing Rangers U18 0 – 4 Roffey U18 Roffey booked their place in the semi-finals of the U18 cup with this comfortable win over Lancing Rangers. Harry Lord opened the scoring with a chip from the corner of the penalty area. Alex Barker then scored a brace and Ben Gibbs blasted home the rebound from Dom Glossop’s solo effort to secure the win.

Returning ‘keeper Smith earns YM a point SCFL Premier Littlehampton Town 1 - 1 Horsham YMCA Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham YMCA fought out a hard earned point at Littlehampton Town; however ‘keeper Sam Smith – making a return to the club after signing from Loxwood – had to be at his very best to make the draw possible. The first half hour was pretty uneventful with both sides cancelling each other out but midway through the half both teams seemed to click into gear and chances came the way of both forward lines. Phil Johnson, playing wide on the right, caused endless problems for the home defence while at the other end Smith was alert to thwart George Gaskin after the Town forward was put in on goal by a poor back pass.

Five minutes before the break it was the home side that took one of the chances when Ben Gray latched onto a goal-line clearance to send the ball back past Smith for a slender half time lead. YM started the second half the livelier of the teams and their energy produced a quick equaliser when Sam Schaaf got on the end of a Johnson free kick to restore parity. The match then took an ugly turn with Town’s manager involved in an incident with Alex Gathern and referee Barrie Small producing 3 yellow cards as the home side allowed their frustrations to spill over. The remainder of the match once again saw the sides trading efforts on goal without adding to the score but it took man of the match Smith to pull off another great stop in the last minute to leave the team with something from the match.

Dominant Hornets coast into round three Liam McDevitt slots home Horsham’s first goal

Horsham’s second goes in through a crowd of players

Sussex Senior Cup 2nd Round Newhaven 2 – 5 Horsham Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham made light work of reaching the third round of the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday evening by recording a big victory at Newhaven’s wet and windy Trafalgar Road ground. Newhaven, who sit mid-table in the Southern Combination Football League Premier, were overrun by their higher league opponents in a match where the

Hornets could have reached double figures if they had not taken their foot off the pedal when 4-0 up with less than 25 minutes played. Liam MacDevitt started things off by scoring after 9 minutes, before Horsham doubled their lead through a Scott Edwards own goal in the 17th minute. Straight from the restart George Branford continued his good form in front of goal by hitting rampant Horsham’s third. If that was not the match done and dusted then it certainly was when Tom Lawley made it 4-0

with only 24 minutes played. Five minutes into the second half Ollie Gill scored the fifth and with the match won Dom Di Paola made a number of changes and as Horsham understandably relaxed the match became a bit of a non-event as both sides for different reasons looked to the final whistle. The Hornets relaxed a little too much however and the host’s scored twice through Ryan Walton and Lee Robinson in the final ten minutes to give the score a closer look than the balance of play and Horsham’s superiority reflected.

Photos by John Lines Ryman Football League South Division Horsham 4 - 3 Faversham Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham braved out a second half goal fest with a well-deserved win in an entertaining, fast, well-matched encounter, fortunes fluctuating throughout. The game began with strong exchanges, continuing in similar vein right to the final whistle. Horsham pressure earned two unrewarded early corners but Faversham were attacking, too, Alex Duncan’s clearance off the goal line keeping them at bay. But, it was the visitors who scored first in the 23rd minute, when Mobolji Dawodu’s back header eluded keeper Josh Pelling’s grasp. The

score remained 0-1 at half time,

We deserved to win but I wasn’t best pleased when it was 3-3 after we’d been two goals up but only after Horsham had dominated play with three more corners and a series of attacks with speedy Tony Nwachukwu invading the visitor’s defence. After the break Faversham narrowly avoided conceding an own goal, only for Horsham to equalise with a powerful George Branford strike when another corner was

played out to the right. Then, following unsuccessful Faversham forays, Nwachukwu burst through to supply Tom Lawley, who gave Horsham the lead with assistance from Faversham Captain Ryan Cooper. Two minutes later Nwachukwu celebrated with a double backflip after putting Horsham 3-1 up. Stung into action, Faversham unleashed a barrage, reducing the deficit when Dawodu fired home. Suddenly, Horsham lost momentum and pacey Dean Grant found space to crash the ball in to level the scores. Mysteriously, Faversham went unsanctioned when their keeper handled the ball beyond the area but Horsham were not done, Branford latching on to Lawley’s cross to seal victory in the dying seconds of normal time. Faversham responded with a desperate last ditch attack but it was Horsham’s day. Relieved Horsham Manager Dom di Paola told the District Post: “We deserved to win but I wasn’t best pleased when it was 3-3 after we’d been two goals up!” George Branford added: “We shouldn’t have conceded the equaliser when we were well on top so it was good to get the game back.” Horsham, still 15th, welcome 22nd placed strugglers Chatham Town to Gorings Mead tomorrow (Saturday) – only one team in the league has conceded more goals. Then, Horsham have a tough away game against top of the table Dorking Wanderers on Tuesday, November 15.

Eastbourne United are third in the league – four places above Horsham YMCA - and they beat YM in the league in August, but this cup clash was a different story - after a stalemate first half YM romped home in style. Preliminary skirmishes were even but as the game developed YM had the lion’s share of possession and attacks, earning three corners. A Dave Brown strike was saved before Nick Sullivan broke through and shot wide. Eastbourne had chances, too but YM had more opportunities, yet the first half finished goal-less. On resumption both sides had probing forays but just when a goal seemed unlikely YM’s Matt Simpson broke through down the left to enable Charlie Cooke to volley home in the 69th

minute. Then, promptly, Simpson was in action again – dummying for Dave Brown to increase YM’s lead. A point blank Eastbourne strike went straight to Lewis Blaney followed by corners at each end, until in the 85th minute a movement from the right opened up the seasiders’ defence for Dave Brown to blast into an open goal. An Eastbourne corner was parried and kicked clear ahead of YM blasting over, only for YM to put the icing on the cake with substitute Sam Schaff’s goal to deliver a thoroughly convincing 4-0 win. Delighted YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “This was a slow burner of a game! We hung in there in the first half and built up a real head of steam in the second to bring us an impressive win.” YM await news of the next round draw, meanwhile they return to Southern Combination action tomorrow (Saturday) with an away game against Lancing. 16th in the table Lancing have won three of their 14 matches to date.

Heath’s charge halted by lowly Peacehaven SCFL Premier Peacehaven & Telscombe 3 - 2 Broadbridge Heath Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC Heath travelled to Peacehaven & Telscombe FC hoping to pick up points to close the gap on the top teams, but things did not go to plan as the home side put on a display that belied their league postion. Peacehaven started very well and had an early chance when Joshua Marshall shot just wide of Michael Chester’s goal while at the other end Jake Holmes setup Ollie Moore who drilled a shot just wide. The pressure from the home-side was now relentless and Chester was forced to make the first of several saves, pushing a shot from distance over the bar. However from the corner the ball came of the crossbar and fell kindly to Acer Wake who netted the rebound. With 11 minutes played it was 2-0 when Chester got a hand to a cross but the

ball fell to Marshall who rifled it back into the goal. The home side went on to dominate the first half and their play was again rewarded 2 minutes before the break when Ellis Cowd played a cross to the far post for Marshall to score his second of the match for a commanding 3-0 lead. Steve Painter brought on Piers McDermott and Tiago Andrade after the break and gradually Heath started to threaten. Jamie Robinson crashed a shot against the crossbar but the home-side still threatened on the break and Chester was forced to make another point blank save to deny the hosts a 4th. Heath finally pulled a goal back in the 67th minute when Stuart Chester bundled a cross from Jamal Sultan into the net. With 15 minutes remaining it was 3-2 when Sultan drilled in a right foot shot from 18 yards and suddenly the home-side were a bit nervy but the Peacehaven defence held out and on the balance of play they thoroughly deserved the victory.
