Top cop slams “blatant” drink drivers phil dennett News Editor
Drivers showed blatant disregard of drink-driving laws despite a publicised police blitz. That is the view of a top police officer after nearly 200 people were arrested in the crackdown between December 1 and the New Year period. Some drivers face court appearances this month and others have already been before magistrates for alleged drink or drug-related driving offences. Chief Inspector Andy Gooch said: "The volume of arrests we have made in Sussex demonstrates the blatant disregard a lot of people have for the law. "At a time when most people are celebrating and spending time with their loved ones, it is disappointing to see that a number of motorists continue to ignore our safety advice.” Several drivers from the Horsham district were among those arrested and their names have been publicised as part of the crackdown. More motorists were arrested in Sussex on New Year's Day, immediately after the conclusion of the Christmas 2015 crackdown on drink View at
and drug-drivers under Operation Dragonfly, which was Surrey and Sussex Police's Christmas crackdown on drink and drug-driving. Phil Nicholas, Chief Inspector of the Sussex Police Roads Policing Unit, said: "I feel the campaign has been a success in that we have arrested a large number of people who may otherwise have been involved in an accident or ended up causing fatalities on the roads in Sussex. "However, it is extremely disappointing that some people have not taken heed of the message, as is reflected in the statistics with 21more people being arrested for drink and drug-driving related offences in the first three days of 2016 - 10 on New Year's Day alone. It shows that this campaign is not aimed solely at targeting drink and drug-drivers at Christmas; it is a year-round strategy and we will continue to bring offenders to justice." Of the 182 arrests made in December, a total of 27 people have been convicted, and a further 72 have been charged and are due to appear in court. People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug driving or visit www.operationcrackdown.co.uk. Horsham-based Born Free Foundation has £200,000 more for protecting animals after an unusual vehicle sale. A one-off Land Rover Defender sold for £400,000 at a prestigious charity auction at Bonhams, with half of the proceeds donated to the work of the Born Free Foundation. The vehicle, the two-millionth of the iconic Series Land Rover and Defender models to be manufactured at Land Rover’s Solihull plant, was sold to a telephone bidder. The Defender was built in May 2015 by an all-star cast of Land Rover brand ambassadors, including Born Free co-founder and trustee and actress Virginia McKenna, and Born Free Co-Founder and President Will Travers. The Born Free Foundation has a long association with Land Rover, dating to 1966 when Land Rover vehicles were featured in the film Born Free. Land Rovers are used by the foun-
dation to reach wildlife in some of the most remote locations of Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia and India. Virginia said: “Despite being seriously mechanically unskilled, I was given the great privilege of attaching the number plates to this very special Defender. Land Rover has been in our lives since 1964, when my husband Bill and I went to Kenya to film ‘Born Free’. Each day we went out in our vehicle with George Adamson and a lion; out on to the plains for our early morning walk. We are delighted that the money raised from today’s auction will help Born Free’s work with wildlife in the Meru area of Kenya where George and Joy Adamson successfully returned the original Elsa to the wild.” Land Rover’s fellow humanitarian and conservation partner, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, will receive the other half of the proceeds of the sale.

Businesses in West Sussex are being urged to find out more about sharing a £225,000 pot to improve internet connections. A total of £225,000 is available for the new West Sussex pilot scheme to support the installation of a superfast connection for groups of businesses not planned for inclusion in either the commercial or publicly-funded rollouts of broadband infrastructure. Business estates or clusters of businesses in West Sussex have until next Friday to apply to the new Digital Connectivity Grant Programme which will provide up to 40 per cent of the capital costs of getting connected. The funding comes from Coast to Capital’s Local Growth Fund under their ‘Growth is Digital’ project. Ron Crank, chief executive of Coast to Capital, said: “I am pleased to
see the launch of these grant pilots through our Growth Deal funding. It is essential that all our businesses have the best connectivity and access to the fastest and latest digital technologies.” To be eligible, groups of businesses must not have current access to superfast broadband services nor be included in the planned delivery of the publicly funded roll out by Better Connected, a partnership of West Sussex County Council, BT and BDUK. Rural West Sussex Partnership, South Downs National Park Authority, Gatwick Diamond Initiative and Coastal West Sussex Partnership have developed the programme supported by West Sussex County Council. Find out more at www.coast2capital.org.uk or email broadband@ southdowns.gov.uk
A start on the first phase of nearly 600 homes on fields at Southwater has been approved. Applicant Olivia Forsyth has been granted permission for 190 houses and 54 retirement flats in a development spread between two plots of land off Worthing Road. The latest application came after last June’s granting of outline planning approval for 540 houses and 54 flats by Horsham district councillors. These will be built in phases of which the 190 houses and the flats will be the first. Two blocks of flats will form part of the estate, which was given the goahead by councillors on the Development Control (North) committee of Horsham District Council on Tuesday evening at Horsham. One objector said the three-storey flats would spoil the setting of Great House Farmhouse, which should be preserved as at present.
Councillors approved “reserved matters” after a report said: “In conclusion it is therefore considered that the scheme will deliver a high quality development in accordance with the outline planning approval and in conformity with national and local planning policies.” But despite the approval councillors asked for further discussion on some of the conditions which they were not satisfied about. Southwater Parish Council raised no objection but wanted the best solutions found for parking, roads and other issues. About 20 objections were lodged against the development, detailing about 30 points, including loss of agricultural and possible pressures on transport and GP surgery facilities in the village. An application is with the council for replacement sports facilities, under a legal agreement by developers.

Warning as heavy rain floods roads Police tee up for charity Photo by Jane Watson
Flooding at Twineham Fire and rescue crews have been busy responding to flood calls after the recent heavy rain. A warning was issued advising drivers to be careful because of surface water flooding some roads. Jane Watson, of Twineham, near Henfield, sent us this picture and others of flooding in her area after recent heavy rain. Jane said: “They were taken before the river burst its banks at about 6pm.
“If the rain continues then the floods here are likely to get much worse - Reeds Lane and Twineham Lane are flood hotspots. “Wineham Lane, Frylands Lane, Wineham and Mock Bridge at Shermanbury are also likely to make a good picture, especially at high tide). Figures from Sussex Fire and Rescue show that property in the Twineham-Wineham area floods on an annual basis. This was the area Mayfield Market Towns thought may
be a good spot for a new town!” Jane was one of the leading figures in a campaign against proposed building of a new town in her area, which has been rejected. A Billingshurst fire and rescue crew helped a woman whose car was trapped in flooded water on the B2135. Fire crews were kept busy pumping flood water and protecting property, including pumping water from the Windmill Inn at Partridge Green, near Henfield.
Deadline week for school applications Next Friday is deadline day for parents applying for a school for their children. Any with children due to start school for the first time this September must apply for a place before January 15. West Sussex County Council is issuing the reminder as the deadline for applications for children starting primary or infant schools fast approaches. Children born between September 1, 2011 and August 31, 2012 are eligible to start school for the first time in September 2016. Richard Burrett, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for education and skills, said: “Parents no longer receive a letter from the County Council, so it is vital that they remember to submit their
preferences for their child’s school place.” “It is really important that par-
Children born between September 1, 2011 and August 31, 2012 are eligible to start school for the first time in September 2016 ents apply for a school place before the deadline, otherwise their chances of getting their preferred school will be greatly reduced.”
Parents can now search online to find out where their catchment school is before filling in a simple online application form atwww. westsussex.gov.uk. Mr Burrett said: “Applying online is simple, convenient and saves time, plus you get an instant email acknowledgement that your application has been submitted. “If you have no access to the internet at home, you can get internet access for two hours, free of charge at West Sussex Libraries or Children and Family Centres.” Parents whose children are due to move to junior school, into Year 3, should also apply before next Friday. If parents would like further advice or information they can call 033 301 42903.
Leo raises over £1400 for autism charity Young Theo Comber has brought a New Year bonus for a charity. The 12-year-old totted up receipts from his Christmas lights display at his home in Rushmans Road, Horsham and discovered he more than doubled his effort from last year. Leo’s effort will benefit the Ambitious About Autism charity by more than £1400. Last year his lights raised £694 for the National Autistic Society. The money this year was raised from a raffle ,tombola, refreshments and a wishing well, with local firms providing prizes. Leo is pictured by his display.
Sussex Police put out its top drivers for an event that raised £1500 for charity, but there wasn't a blue light in sight. Forty police officers and staff also chipped and putted their way round a private golf course in West Sussex as they enjoyed splendid summer weather back in July raising the money for Help for Heroes. Sussex Police golf captain Rob
McPhilemy said: "We are extremely grateful to our host for allowing us to use the course, which meant that all money raised went towards this extremely important charity." The £1500 cheque was presented to Help for Heroes representative Louise Pye by Sussex Police golf section president, Assistant Chief Constable Robin Smith (right) and captain Rob McPhilemy.

Top garden workers are rewarded More road improvements Going the extra mile has earned workers at a top tourist attraction awards. Paul Reader and Steven Robinson of Wakehurst Gardens have each just been awarded prestigious William Aiton medals for 2015. William Aiton was a Scottish botanist who was made director of the newly -established botanical gardens at Kew in 1759 and the William Aiton Medal was introduced in 2009 to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of Kew. The medal is for individuals whose “achievements or contributions or service to the Gardens at Kew andor Wakehurst are considered of outstanding merit” and is for staff at any stage of their careers. Wakehurst director Tony Sweeney presented the in front of the staff at Wakehurst, in the Elizabethan Mansion. Paul Reader, 48, from Haywards Heath has worked at Wakehurst since 1984 having come straight from school. He is a team leader of the gardens unit and the staff and volunteers thrive under his guidance and support. These include a longterm horticultural volunteer with special needs, who Wakehurst says has grown in self-confidence under Paul’s guiding wing. Over the past 31 years he has given much of his time freely and enthusiastically, providing tours and giving talks. Steven, 47, from Ardingly, has been at Wakehurst for 25 years and

although his official title is Warden of the Loder Valley Nature Reserve, he is said to be a “dab hand” at many other things from hedge-laying to woodworking to climbing trees and placing the light on the very top of Wakehurst’s 120 foot Christmas tree. Paul thanked everyone for nominating him whilst Steven thanked the beauty and wildlife of the Loder
Valley Nature Reserve without which he would not be able to have such a lovely job. Tony Sweeney said: “Since I’ve arrived at Wakehurst I’ve been struck by the passion of our people to go that extra mile. Paul and Steve are shining examples who have consistently shown exemplary commitment over many years and continue to do so to the benefit of visitors and fellow staff alike.”
More traffic improvements are promised for Broadbridge Heath after the opening to traffic of the A264 link road. Traffic calming and junction improvements are in line for consideration this year. Developer Countryside Properties, which opened the new A24 junction at Broadbridge Heath in June with a ceremony, informed West Sussex County Council the road was ready to use and it was opened to drivers just before Christmas. The council said it would now prioritise the remaining road improvements to come from the funding secured in association with these developments. These include traffic calming schemes for Broadbridge Heath and Warnham and more junction improvements on the A24. The 1km link road cost about £4.5m and Countryside has paid for it.It connects the A24 junction to the Newbridge Nursery Roundabout on the A264 Five Oaks Road and also provides access to the Wickhurst Green housing development. John O’Brien, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “This new road will ease pressure on Broadbridge Heath. “It will reduce some of the rush hour traffic and allow traffic to get on the A24 easier.
“I think one of the key things when there is a demand for housing is to have appropriate infrastructure in place, which thankfully we have here now.”The A264 Link Road is part of an infrastructure package designed to cope with 2,000 new

Martial arts enthusiasts have a new venue for their sport from tomorrow. Kenagi Academy of Martial Arts is moving its Saturday classes to Southwater Junior Academy from January 9 and is encouraging the local community to use the move to kick-start a healthy lifestyle for 2016. Because of its convenient location, Southwater Junior Academy is now the home of martial arts for the local area. When Jo Gill helped raise money it was for a cause dear to her heart. J0 lost her father to heart problems and she decided to raise money to help others who have similar problems. Jo is a personal banker at Santander branch in Horsham and she and supporters raised £923 making cakes amongst other efforts. One well-wishing group handed over a £250 cheque. The company matched the fundraising taking the receipts to £1847 for the British Heart Foundation. Jo Gill said: "I asked my branch director Amanda Rousell if I could raise money for British Heart Foundation. It's a charity close to my heart as my father passed away 18 years ago at the age of 47, with heart disease.
“He contributed a lot to the British Heart Foundation himself. So I wanted to do this in memory of him. Amanda is always passionate about helping charities, local and other. So for her and me it was so important to raise as much money as we could and we did." On the day fellow fund raisers Jade Gill and Kira Pickering dressed up and baked many cakes, asking donations for them at Horsham town centre. Inside the Santander branch mortgage advisor Debbie Whittaker rode an exercise bike from 9am to 4pm , taking only a couple of short breaks filled by Jo, Kira and Jade. Debbie rode the equivalent of all the way to Calais achieving 193 kilometres. Gill said: “The team of Santander
and British Heart Foundation shop had an amazing day. The people of Horsham town were good spirited and very generous. One person wrote a cheque for £250, this was the Barns Green stoolball players. “All in all was a great day. We would like to thank Truffles, Waitrose, Sainsburys and Tesco for their kind donations. And a huge thank you to the volunteers of the British Heart Foundation shop in Horsham High Street.” Pictured are the exercise bike session and the fund raisers outside the shop.

Sainsbury’s will recycle all collected Christmas cards and make a donation to FSC® UK in 2016 based on the volume collected in all its stores. Sainsbury’s Horsham Deputy Store Manager Richard Lasham said: “We’ve always had a brilliant response from customers in previous years and with their help, we’re hoping to make an even bigger contribution this time. The recycling initiative is a great way to support the invaluable work of the FSC® and help customers to tackle Christmas waste and put it to positive use”.

Protests in West Sussex over a Trading Standards Officers “Dark Ages” crime against women issue scam calls warning The fight against a “Dark Ages” crime that ruins the lives of women is being backed by county councillors. West Sussex county councillors have united in speaking out against the crime of Female Genital Mutilation. A motion, proposed by Cllr Duncan Crow, was passed unanimously at a meeting of the full council. The motion stated: “West Sussex County Council supports the campaign against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and in doing so, asks the Leader to ensure commitment to protecting all girls in West Sussex from all types of abuse by raising awareness of FGM through schools and public information; collaborating across agencies to ensure those affected are provided with the right support, and understanding that lasting change in relation to this issue needs to come from within our communities. “We also call on the Cabinet to approve and adopt a Charter for zero tolerance of Female Genital Mutilation in West Sussex and support ‘UNite to End Violence Against Women’, the United Nation’s General-Secretary’s campaign which aims to raise public awareness and increase political will and resources for preventing all forms of violence

anything against such a brutal attack on any young person is to have the shining light of exposure on it and today, in this chamber, this is what we have done. For it is only when you highlight the corners can you see the dust and sweep it out.” In Britain 16,000 girls under the age of 15 are at risk of FGM and 137,000 women live with the consequences of the crime. The practice, illegal in the UK, refers to procedures that alter female genital organs for non-medical reasons. It can have devastating consequences for its victims including infections, infertility, incontinence and problems in child birth. Some victims can die of blood loss during the procedure. Peter Evans, Cabinet member for Children – Start of Life, said: “To me this is a practice from the dark ages and has no place in a modern society. We must have zero tolerance against this most brutal of crimes and help protect girls from the horrors of FGM.” Summing up the debate, Cllr Crow said he has been humbled by the debate which had seen members from all political parties speak out against the “barbaric” practice. “It shows that we are united in speaking with one voice about this horrible practice,” he said.
People are being conned by bogus telephone scams in West Sussex. Trading Standards Officers are warning residents to be on their guard against the crooks. Fake callers have been conning innocent victims by alleging they have been passed their contact details by West Sussex County Council in connection with a recent accident. The calls are phishing attempts to gather personal details which will be sold on to the highest bidder. Bogus traders often target elderly and vulnerable residents who then suffer significant financial losses after revealing personal bank details. Richard Sargeant, Trading Standards Team Manager, said: “We have been informed that residents are receiving phone calls from someone who is falsely claiming to have received their contact details from West Sussex County Council. “We advise anyone targeted by cold-callers or doorstep traders to hang up or say no, and report it.” Other sham traders claim to work
on behalf of the council offering ‘left over tarmac’ for driveway repairs or claim to be Trading Standards Officers seeking payments in connection with ‘court proceedings’. Rogue traders also exploit residents by carrying out unnecessary and poor quality home improvements while charging extortionate sums for the work. Mr Sargeant said: “Phone, mail and doorstep scammers are typically ruthless, scheming and above all very plausible. “We advise extreme caution if something appears to be too good to be true, like a foreign lottery win or a guaranteed prize, as it will almost certainly be a scam.” Anyone concerned about a potential scam can contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506 for advice or report an incident direct to Trading Standards at www.westsussex.gov.uk/tsreport To help protect against cold-calling scams register with the Telephone Preference Service on 0345 070 0707 or atwww.tpsonline.org.uk.

The tale of Horsham’s lost masterpiece unveiled
The story of the lost Horsham landscaping masterpiece by famous designer Capability Brown is being told in an exhibition at Horsham Museum. One of the great landscape gardeners of Britain, Lancelot Capability Brown visited Horsham and created a miniature masterpiece in 200 acres at Hills. The Duke of Norfolk had it ploughed up for farmland after buying the town about 50 years afterwards. That was 200 years ago and since then Brown’s creation has been forgotten and lost to the world. Now, thanks to two remarkable maps, the museum is telling the story of the ‘lost’ garden in its new exhibition called “Capability Brown in Horsham: Discovering a Lost Garden”, which runs from Saturday until March 12. The exhibition not only includes the original survey done by Lapidge, Brown’s assistant in 1766, but also the original designs that Brown produced two years later. These two documents will be the star exhibits in the exhibition. With the support of Toovey’s Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers, the maps have been enlarged. Hills was a Jacobean mansion that through marriage ended up being owned by the Ingram family of Temple Newsam in Yorkshire. Hills was their southerly outpost. Just as Temple Newsam had a Brown makeover, so did Hills, and it attracted much local comment at the time as a contemporary diary and letters, also on display, describe. Hills Place lies on the outskirts of Horsham and about 50 years after Brown laid out the grounds the Duke of Norfolk ploughed up the gardens to turn them into farmland. He also had the large manor house pulled down, creating a ‘lost’ garden, with the maps being the sole survivors.

Alongside the historic maps and letters, a group of highly talented botanical artists from the Horsham area, taught by Leigh Ann Gale, will be exhibiting their watercolours inspired by Brown’s landscape. The exhibition is made possible by

Head turns tables over tests for 11-year-olds The head mistress at a Horsham school has accused the Government of a lack of trust in teachers in a row over learning tables. Frances Mwale, Prep Headmistress at Farlington School said in a statement to the Post this week: “Is the Government’s latest educational announcement on Times Tables testing another example of a lack of trust? Does Nicky Morgan really think that teachers of primary-aged pupils do not fully appreciate that a sound knowledge of Times Tables is highly desirable and makes so many other algorithms quicker and easier to master? “But why do we need another high stakes test for our young learners? The thing about Times Tables though is learning them is not really about mathematics. Of course it involves numbers, but the sequential learning of numbers requires a rather different skillset to the solving of puzzles and problems or investigating patterns. It boils down to rote learning. “For some children the rote learning of anything, including Times Tables, comes very easily. Most others are usually quick to master the 2s, 5s and 10s because the patterns are simple and repetitive. But for a small number of learners, committing to memory any type of sequence is problematic. “This is why over the past 30 years of my teaching career, so many innovative ideas have been brought to the fore to help children master their Tables: there are some
wonderful Times Table raps and rhymes; there are computer-based drill and practice activities to bolster up the impact of chanting repeatedly through the various Tables, until that repetition makes the numbers stick; there is a plethora of games to put this knowledge into practice. “The learning of Times Tables is undoubtedly very important. Teachers do and have always put a great deal of time into this area of memory learning and for those who find themselves, despite striving, unable to remember, ways and means have been devised so that the answers can be calculated, albeit much more slowly than ‘instant’ recall: many will know the trick with your fingers and thumbs to come up with 9x Table answers. To remember 8 x 8 = 64, just think, ‘I ate and I ate and was sick on the floor!’ “In my school, we already encourage mastery of Tables because they are so very useful. Pupils work hard to gain Certificates for knowing their Tables - usually by the end of Year 4 - and are always keen to come along to be tested for the next: Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum. In this way, we identify strugglers early on too, try to find out reasons for their barriers to success and then put interventions in place to help them move forwards. “The thing that perplexes me most is what the Nation will gain by sitting 10 and 11-year-olds down in front of screens, time-bound and pressured, to see who can recall the numbers quickly and who cannot.”

Politics, war, chocolate and more – 2015 at Horsham Museum horsham museum horshammuseum.org
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times… except that a ‘Horsham Museum Dickens’ could not write that classic statement in 2015. For in 2015, Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum had a fantastic year, beginning with a very popular exhibition on parliamentary history. Included in the exhibition was the remarkable forgotten story that, in the 1930s, the British Union of Fascists had a base in West Street and Denne Road. The exhibition was supported by Toovey’s Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers, who throughout the year, have made a number of exhibitions possible in these tightened times. As the year progressed, other great events were commemorated, as Horsham and the District’s stories were linked to national events. Following the calling of the first parliament and signing of the Magna Carta (750 and 800 years ago), the Museum focused on the Battle of Waterloo where soldiers, based in the forgotten Horsham and Steyning barracks, fought. Then, to change the tone, the Museum and nation commemorated the 150th anniversary of the publication of Alice in Wonderland. The original Alice honeymooned in the town and in 1931 visited the Museum (then in Park house, now in the Causeway): as a
result of all of this, the museum saw over 80,000 visitors. One of the reasons for the increasing number of visitors was the popularity of the Art Gallery and Craft Gallery. With the very rich artistic culture in Horsham and the District, the Museum has opportunities to display some remarkable work by local talent. As a result of their excellence, the museum has sold over £12,000 of their work, as well as holding exhibitions of work not for sale. Behind the scenes, the Museum has acquired a large number of historic documents as the District Council moved offices. Some, dating back to the 17th century, were no longer required due to computerisation; others, dating back 5 years, will help future historians explain how the town and district changed in the noughties. These documents, along with photographs, costumes and social history objects donated by the public, have been scanned and catalogued by a team of loyal volunteers. The volunteers have also contributed to running the successful Reminiscence service and tending the museum gardens, back-cataloguing thousands of objects, and helping with displays. Without the volunteers’ help and support, the museum could not achieve anywhere near the amount that it does. One of the most significant changes during the year, is the one seen most by people not living in Horsham, or the district, yet its impact may be one of the most important to the area. The year 2015
saw the launch of Horsham and District’s first website dedicated to visitors. The website Horshamvisitor.co.uk is written by the staff who work in the Visitor Information Centre, housed in the Museum. Its aim is to provide relevant and impartial information to anyone who is interested in visiting, as well as a resource for the local community. Following on from the success of
Horsham Gingerbread, which this year saw its first national TV outing on Escape to the Country, the Museum also launched Horsham Chocolate. Made by a local company, the indulgence has proved to be a popular addition to the range of souvenirs. This was added to in the last days of 2015 with a stunning tea-towel of the district. The staff and volunteers of the
Museum are actively working on 2016's exhibitions, events, activities and a large amount of ‘back room work’, providing core resources to the local community. With the above account being just a taster of last year's activity, this year is sure to prove a great one! For further information, pop in to Horsham Museum: 9 Causeway, Horsham, or visit their website.

Roffey Cricket Club Panto How did your garden fare in 2015? pulls in a big crowd Cricket Entertainment Martin Read – Sports Reporter After their successful first panto – Cinderella - at Christmas 2014 Roffey Cricket Club’s second venture was even better.
A full house was treated to a highly amusing performances confirming that Premier League Champions Roffey provide rich entertainment A full house was treated to a highly amusing performance confirming that Premier League Champions Roffey provide rich entertainment both on and off the field. A team helped to stage the production, including Assistant Treasurer Toni Jeal and club Chairman Mark Hamilton, but the show was another triumph for the Hendersons – Roffey Secretary Maria scripted and
produced the piece while sons Joe and Sam took leading roles. Experienced actor Joe, no stranger to scoring duties at the club, had the name part while diminutive younger brother Sam played his mother, Widow Twankey. Sam, an ugly sister in Cinderella, enjoys playing football and is a burgeoning all rounder on the cricket field – as proved when, in June 2014, he took five wickets in five balls and scored 43 in the same Roffey U9 match, which he captained. But, whatever he does on the pitch, Sam will never be more entertaining. In a waist length blonde wig he delivered his substantial lines in great style backed up by a strong cast, including a display of Irish dancing from award winning Katie Jeal. The show featured an amusing reworking of The Twelve Days of Christmas and ingenious passages of business involving the magic carpet and Widow Twankey’s laundry. The interval buffet was followed by the appearance of Father Christmas with sacks of presents for the many children in attendance. Maria Henderson told the District Post: “Hard work, but great fun and we’ve been thinking what we might do for next Christmas!” Meanwhile several other cricket clubs have followed Roffey’s lead and put on their own pantos locally.

In the garden, this time of year is traditionally the time to take stock. A time for you to assess where you went wrong and to reward where you went right! Accordingly, it also a time when you should reflect on how lucky you are to have a house, a garden, family and friends. It is, after-all, only a generation ago that many in the UK were using the outside toilet, heating their houses with a single coal fire and having a bath in the middle of the kitchen! As remote and abstract as these ideas are, there are some who still live in extreme poverty. Perhaps you cannot countenance
such a situation in Horsham in 2016? There are stop gaps, funds, benefits. government interventions. You'd be wrong to think it is all taken care of. Have no doubt, there is somebody in your neighbourhood today who is not so lucky. Someone who has no family to check on them, to make sure all is well. Remember, in the UK, 50% of people aged over 75 live alone. Perhaps you think, I am being mischievous to suggest that by offering to help with the garden, we may open the doors to a better society? There are many hidden sides to our country. Whilst the media portrays distinct lines of the haves and have-nots, the 'saints and scroungers', there are sadly some who remain invisible. Those who have worked hard and fallen on hard times as Dickens put it. Those that have outlived their contemporaries. Thus, you may have noticed

your next door neighbour's garden is unkempt or derelict. Every morning you look out and curse their ineptitude. An un-kept garden is indeed a safe-haven for vermin. But think on. Perhaps, despite appearing capable, they are suffering silently from loneliness, depression or some invisible ailment? Perhaps they are too proud to ask for help? Perhaps they are painfully aware that mental illness in our society is seen as a disease to be shunned? If you are reading this column, you are at the very least vaguely interested in gardening. Perhaps as a community, 2016 can be a positive year for all and not just the few lucky enough to be fit and able? Cicero said, “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need." If I may ask, what then of those in our world who are no longer able to read and have nobody to read for them?

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT... We have been using the Resident and Clive G Hancocks subsequently, The District Post for Director advertising since the launch of the paper. Whilst it is difficult to quantify results, I would say that as a free paper, delivered around the whole Horsham District and picked up from selected places in the area, they are friendly to deal with, professional, very helpful with design and swift to print. Deadline is Wednesday for a Friday print and they have NEVER let us down! We use this paper exclusively. Because it is a free paper and the best known for that around the area, the circulation is getting bigger by the week/month and therefore I would recommend highly as THE advertising vehicle to use.

The myth of the “quickie” divorce Specialist childrenswear Marwa Hadi Rawlison Butler
As a family solicitor, one of the first questions a client asks at our first meeting, regarding the divorce, is “how long is this process going to take?” They are then surprised to learn it can take up to six to seven months to conclude a divorce. The media does little to help and there are often headlines reporting that celebrities have had a “quickie divorce” - in some cases, that this took 90 seconds! What this does actually mean is that the divorce was not defended. The 90 second reference would refer to the time it took for the Judge to pronounce a decree nisi, which is the first stage of the divorce. What these references fail to factor in, is the time it takes from the beginning to the end of the process as a whole. It is no secret that, owing to cut backs, there are significant backlogs within the Courts. The centralisation of the divorce courts and creation of specific divorce centres was intended to increase their efficiency, but in reality, solicitors are finding that there are still significant delays. Notwithstanding this, if you seek divorce, there is still much that you and your representative can do to
try to ensure the divorce proceeds as quickly as possible: Do ensure you obtain legal assistance when completing the divorce paperwork. Any errors, however minor, can result in the divorce petition being rejected and sent back to be amended. If amendments need to be made further down the line, you may have to pay an additional Court fee. An experienced solicitor can also often pre-empt any issues down the line. Do have your marriage certificate ready. The original needs to be sent to Court and if the original is not available, a certified copy needs to be obtained from the place of marriage. If you married abroad and your marriage certificate is not in English, it will need to be translated. Try not to include anything in the divorce petition that is likely to antagonise your spouse. For example, if you are issuing on the basis of your spouse’s adultery, try not to name any third party. Similarly, if you are issuing on the basis of your spouse’s
unreasonable behaviour, try not to include incidents which you feel your spouse would strongly object to. If your spouse is unhappy with the petition, he or she is more likely to defend the proceedings which will slow down the process significantly. Do not confuse the divorce with resolution of financial matters. Even where the divorce itself is undefended, couples can find they cannot agree over financial matters and sometimes have to attend Court to deal with that. It is fairly common for the Decree Absolute (which is the final stage of the divorce) to not be applied for until financial matters are resolved. The family team at Rawlison Butler can assist you during this process and we also offer a fixed fee option. If you would like to discuss the options available to you, please contact Marwa Hadi by emailing Marwa: mhadi@rawlisonbutler.com or by calling her on +44 (0)1293 527744.

The thriving setting of Horsham Market has been the lure for returning childrens dress designer and Market Trader, Molly Coddle Childrenswear. Owner of the Sussex based business, Tracey Edwards, makes the children’s clothing and specialises in quirky fabrics, simple styling and vintage looks, for babies and children up to seven years. Tracey comments: “I am excited about returning to Horsham, after a few busy months away, as customers tell me they really appreciate the uniqueness of my designs; I try hard to not have just pink for girls or just blue for boys. One of my biggest sellers at the moment is the Tweedy style cape for girls – it’s such a classic design!” Molly Coddle Childrenswear prides itself on quality, durability and individuality and Tracey’s designs have been sent all over the world to customers, but she says Horsham is a great place to sell her items. Tracey chose to return to Horsham Markets, as she has a loyal customer base. She is now hoping to meet more, as Saturdays have become her new trading day (instead of Thursdays) and states: “the market is such a great mix of quality traders and I have forged lasting relationships with many of them and learnt so much from their extensive experience.
“I spent three years trading on Thursdays at Horsham and after a break away I am really looking forward to starting 2016 Saturday trading” Come along to see Tracey in Horsham every Saturday from 9am4pm, commencing January 9. Sussex Service Stars awards now open for nominations Sussex based print, design and marketing specialist, Evonprint, is delighted to announce that it will be continuing the search for the customer service heroes of the county with its Sussex Service Stars awards. Priding themselves on their first class reputation for customer service, Evonprint launched the awards in May 2015 to reward those who go above and beyond the call of duty in the Sussex area. Both the first and second rounds received remarkable responses from the public and Evonprint were thrilled to award Pets Corner’s, Sophie Cook, and owner of Lady Decorators, Gill Burn, after they were both nominated for their exceptional customer service. Steve Rowland, Managing Director at Evonprint, commented: “We have all experienced good customer service at some point in our lives, but rarely do we mention it when we do, although many of us are quite rightly quick to complain when we experience poor service! It’s been fantastic to award both Sophie and Gill with their certificates and luxury hampers and I look forward to rewarding the next winner.” Every quarter, the nominee with the best customer service story, will be presented with a hamper of prizes worth over £75, whilst the nominator will receive a £20 Love to Shop Voucher. They can be, for example, a server in a restaurant, a shop as-
sistant who has gone out of their way to help or a local taxi driver that has gone that extra mile (so to speak). Whoever they are, Evonprint wants to hear about them! This year's nomination deadline is February 14. To nominate someone for Evonprint’s Sussex Service Stars Awards, simply email sussexservicestars@pmwcom.co.uk, call Lottie Dove at PMW Communications, on 01403 783 400 or write to Evonprint’s Sussex Service Stars, c/o PMW
Evonprint launched the awards in May 2015 to reward those who go above and beyond Communications, Stane Court, Stane Street, Billingshurst, West Sussex RH14 9HP. Nominations should include the name of the nominee (if known), where they work and a brief explanation of why they deserve to win. Contact details for the nominee’s place of work are preferable, but not compulsory, however, nominator details must be included. This award will be presented next month, so get nominating, to ensure customer service workers get the recognition they deserve.

Welcome to the Carnevil 21st Anniversary Tour
T
he show that stormed into the finals of Britain's Got Talent and now a West End smash, is back at The Hawth, this month, to mark its 21st Anniversary in spectacular style. The last few of years has seen the profile of The Circus of Horrors jump tremendously, after rampaging into the finals of Britain's Got Talent and, to this date, it is still the only circus ever to reach the finals. Its appearances on various subsequent TV shows have turned (what set out as) a cult show into a household name. Taking the extreme to the mainstream, its TV credits now boast The X Factor, The Slammer, Daybreak, Fairground Attractions, Who wants to be a Millionaire, Body Shockers, Fake Reaction, This Morning, Ant & Dec, The One Show and A Royal Command Performance. Last year saw another giant leap for the show, when it began a series of dates in London’s West End, becoming the first circus to appear in a West End Theatre for 100 years and the show returned to The Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. The Circus of Horrors started it’s gruesome beggings at the 1995 Glastonbury Festival and became an instant hit, touring all over the world, from Chile to Chatham, Argentina to Aberdeen, Japan to
Jersey - including festival appearances with Alice Cooper, Eminem, Motley Crue, Oasis, Iron Maiden, The Manic St Preachers, Foo Fighters and many more. The latest incarnation, Welcome to the Carnevil, is set in Victorian London in 1899. Jack the Ripper was still at large and this was the age of the Freakshow. A young girl dreams of running away to join the Circus only to see her dream become a nightmare in a decrepit and corpse ridden Carnevil, plagued by a swamp of Killer Klowns, Sword Swallowers, Demon Drawfs, Death Deifying Aerialists, A Guiness World Record holding Hairculian Diva - swinging solely from her hair, back flipping and fire limboing acrobats and lots more: A show ruled by the undead and climaxing in an awesome flaming apocalypse. The story twists and turns with grisly murders and sensational shocks – all interwoven with some of the greatest and most bizarre circus acts on earth, performed by an almighty cast with a forked tongue firmly in each cheek and the devil driven rock n’ roll of Dr Haze and The Interceptors from Hell. Performance: January 21 at 7.30pm Tickets: £23 (Discounts: £19), can be purchased from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting www.hawth.co.uk.

The biggest Rock 'n' Roll party in town Four giants of the Rock ‘n’ Roll world come together for the first time in Be Bop a Lula, a great show, coming to The Capitol on January 16, which will take your breath away, from the first chord, to the explosive finale. The Capitol invites you to come along for the biggest rock n roll party in town with a live band, to celebrate the music of Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Billy Fury and Roy Orbison. Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent first came to the UK in the legendary 1960 tour. Eddie tragically never made it back home, after dying in a car crash on April 17, but his musical genius paved the way for future artists, such as The Beatles. Dance along to ‘Summertime Blues’, ‘Jeannie Jeannie Jeannie’ and ‘C’mon Everybody’. Gene Vincent was an instant Rock ‘n’ Roll rebel, who fans simply loved, with hits such as Be Bop A Lula, Say Mama and Race With the Devil. Billy Fury is known as Britain’s true rocker, having written his own first album, The Sound Of Fury, and hit songs, Half Way To Paradise, When Will You Say I Love You and Wondrous Place. Roy Orbison needs no introduction. With songs such as In Dreams, Crying, Mean Woman Blues and Only The Lonely, he is a big addition to the already amazing line up. Backed by some of the UK’s finest musicians, Gavin Stanley and Lars Young recreate these legends with passion and a very real ‘feel’ of the artists and their music. “Well... Be Bop A Lula, she’s my baby....” You know you want to sing along! For information and bookings, please contact the Capitol Box Office.
Jack & The Beanstalk panto goes sky high The Hawth’s pantomime for 2015/16, Jack and the Beanstalk, attracted 30,000 people to the Crawley venue during it’s three week run, with audiences taking up 90% of the available seats for the show. The show starred EastEnders’ bad guy, Steve McFadden, as Fleshcreep, the Giant’s henchman, alongside CBeebie’s Rebecca Keatley, as Fairy Sugarsnap. The success of this hit pantomime is perhaps down, in no small part, to the perfect blend of ingredients for a festive family treat – produced, once again by Evolution Productions (who brought Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty to Crawley), audiences were treated to comedy, audience participation, amazing sets, special effects and of course HUGE giants and a break dancing cow! There was high praise from all quarters, with The Crawley and Horley Observer reviewer commenting: “The Hawth Theatre and Evolution
Productions have done it again with another fun-filled pantomime for all the family. Jack and the Beanstalk has everything you want in a festive show”, while The Argus called it “an absolute Christmas Cracker” of a show. The praise continued with The Crawley News stating that “Jack and the Beanstalk delivers on all counts” and The Stage calling it “energetic and colourful”. Feedback from audiences throughout the run was incredibly positive, with many taking to Facebook and Twitter, with feedback like, “Absolutely fantastic show. The cast is superb!! Can't wait to see it again”, “Best panto we have ever seen” and “Brilliant panto can't wait for next year”. Although there’s nothing we can do about the wait for Peter Pan in December 2016, you can book your tickets now, by calling: 01293 553636 or visiting www.hawth.co.uk.

Bodywise Gym and Studios - The District Detox Our very own Christine Doyle takes on the 2016 Detox and Fitness Challenge sonal Trainer at Bodywise, this was to discuss advertising and yet when talking to her and having a show round her studio, I felt as comfortable as I ever have in a Gym. Mitzi has a lovely way about her, I spoke of my weight, diet and fitness and she went through the benefits of a having a Personal Trainer, especially when someone is at the age and poor fitness I am and can’t face the journey again or alone. I thought this is my chance to change for the better, I thought if I shared it with our readers then I can give inspiration... It is the most gutsiest thing I have ever done, the photos are awful. I hope that I will feel prouder at the end of my journey in 3 months. I will keep you all updated.

I warmed Chrissie up on the bike to settle her into her workout. Here is Chrissie’s workout programme: Bike on manual programme, level 5 resistance with an RPM of 75 for the first 4/5 minutes, once she felt warmed up and less nervous we went into interval training on the bike. Interval Training: A 30 second burst at high speed, Chrissie reached 125 RPM with the level at 5, followed by 1 minute of active rest at 80 RPM. Chrissie continued this for 10 minutes. When assessing somebodies individual circumstances the first thing that we do at Bodywise Gym and Studios is have a one to one consultation where we spend some time getting to know and understand the lifestyle of the person by asking relevant questions. These questions are geared towards us establishing certain key areas which we need to understand in order to compose a bespoke programme that will work for the individual. As part of our initial assessment we aim to understand how your energy levels are affected throughout the day, we do a digestion check, a detox check and a pain check. From these results I was able to design a diet to help Chris-

and then again in the evening. We all have a moment when we realised that moment of NO MORE, I was running to catch a train, not only did it nearly kill me but then sat red faced with my reflection in the glass doors. I was embarrassed (not as much as I am now with these photo’s) as we all had to run and no one was as and puffed as me, I was even over taken by a lady well in her 60’s. I sat thinking what condition I will be in at 60. Anyone who knows me, knows I love socialising, good meals, good laughs and a glass of wine in hand. The weight has crept up on me. I know gyms didn’t work for me and was searching for a new diet and DVD to leave to collect dust. I met with Mitzi, Owner and Per-
Christine Doyle
So here goes, I have polished off all the Christmas left overs and threw in a curry too as a farewell to my bad habits and unhealthy lifestyle. I was determined that I would be fit at 40 and failed , I yo-yoed through my 30’s as this was baby time and always had an excuse to hold that extra weight. I had done all the fad diets, high protein, low fat, low carb, eat, starve and so on. Some had some good results but only temporary. I joined about 6 gyms in 3 years and never completed the 6 week induction with any! Now 41, with the addition of a puppy to add to my already busy lifestyle, I was thinking this would be my means to a trimmer fitter me... No, my partner gets up early and does the walk

Emily eats her way to weightloss at her local Slimming World Local Southwater resident, Emily Joy, ate her way to losing 2st 7 lbs at her local Slimming World group. Emily, 25, joined the Southwater Slimming World group in January 2015 with her mum. She shares how with the support of her mum and the group, she was able to lose weight, all by eating her favourite foods. “On that first night as I walked into group, I was nervous but knew I needed to be there. I had made up my mind that I didn't want to carry on feeling worthless because of my weight and how I looked.” She had previously tried lots of other diets without any success, and with a stressful job and low self esteem, was turning to food more and more as a form of comfort. Upon seeing a picture of herself last Christmas and being horrified with what she saw, she decided to take action. “A leaflet for Slimming World came through my door, and it was like a sign! I had a look at the website and saw that I could still eat proper food - I was thrilled!” Since joining her local Slimming World group, Emily has eaten her way to success, losing 2st 7 lbs enjoying curries, spaghetti bolognaise and pizza, all guilt free. “I couldn't believe all of the choice I had and how easy it all was! Being a vegetarian is so simple at Slimming World, and I never have to go hungry.”
By being a part of her weekly group, Emily has learnt how to Food Optimise and cook delicious meals, all whilst socialising with her new found friends. Nearly a year down the line, and with a sparkling new confidence, Emily is relaunching the Southwater Slimming World group as their new consultant.
By being a part of her weekly group, Emily has learnt how to Food Optimise and cook delicious meals, all whilst socialising with her newfound friends “I'm no longer hiding away and gaining weight, I'm now gaining a new career helping others to reach their dreams.” Emily's group of Slimming World is relaunching on Thursday 31st December 2015 at 5.30pm at Southwater Village Hall Southwater, RH13 9HX and will run every Thursday at 7.30pm thereafter. Please contact Emily on 07913398330 for more details or any enquiries.

London Salsa Club launches in Horsham Learn Salsa dancing, make new friends and get fit in the New Year!
A
successful Salsa club from London is expanding and will now be offering classes and club nights in Horsham from 12th January. Miguel Mayana, run by former UK professional Salsa Champions and top awarded UK teachers, will be teaching the trendy and popular ‘Cross Body New York Style On 1 Salsa’ at the Chameleon Club, Horsham Leisure Centre every Tuesday from the 12th January onwards. “Learning to dance Salsa can be great fun, a lovely way to meet and make new friends and a real alternative to joining the gym to get fit and lose weight,” Miguel has enthused. “We are really impressed with Horsham and the cosmopolitan feel of the town and have only heard good things from the people from the area who already come up to our London classes and club and were encouraging us to launch one there. We are so glad we have ! “We are very much looking forward to bringing the London Salsa scene to Horsham and the surrounding areas. From beginners through to advanced, there will be something for everyone.” For further information on the launch party and lessons, please visit www.miguelmayana.co.uk.
About Miguel and Mayana Miguel and Mayana are the 2007 and 2008 UK Professional Salsa Champions. They also went on to be awarded the title of Top U.K Salsa Teachers in 2009 & 2011. Miguel Rico became Corona Salsa Champion in 2001, Scala Latina Sal-
sa Champion in 2003 and UKA Salsa Champion in 2006. His musical interpretation comes from his parents who are musicians and combined with his knowledge and considerable experience makes him stand out in both performances and teaching. Miguel’s personality and smile is
simply contagious and makes learning easy and fun. Mayana’s love for dance started at an early age where she followed her heart attending one of the best Russian Dance Academy where she studied from traditional dances to ballet & contemporary.

Ten buyers per property Lines & James letting agent achieves excellence Supply dipped and demand grew, as number of sales made to first time buyers (FTBs) fell in November, reveals the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) November Housing Market Report1. After a promising period from July to October in which the number of sales made to FTBs grew, in November, the percentage of sales made to the group fell by 10%. Sales as a whole are down by one percent – which is typical of this time of year – but sales to FTBs have nose-dived dramatically – and estate agents believe it will only get worse. The Chancellor outlined plans to help FTBs get on the housing ladder during his Autumn Statement at the start of last month, but over half (53%) of NAEA members think the group will continue to feel squeezed out of the market, due to the lack of affordable housing. Supply and demand The lack of supply and growing demand for housing continued to drive the market in to the ground, as the number of house-hunters grew by 20% and available stock fell. In October, there were 336 house-hunters on average registered per branch, rising to 403 in November. Available housing decreased marginally in N o v e m ber, from 43 properties managed per branch last month, to 41 this month – meaning there are now 10 prospec-
tive buyers battling it out for each property. Mark Hayward, Managing Director, National Association of Estate Agents, said: “It’s very normal at this time of year that demand is high and supply is low. House hunters hoping to find their dream property in the New Year have registered interest with agents, whilst those hoping to sell are holding off putting their properties on the market before January. However, supply is outweighing demand so heavily now that it can’t solely be attributed to seasonality. “It’s clear that we’re faced with a crisis here: the housing market needs addressing as a matter of urgency. Our recent Housing 2025 report2 compiled with Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) and Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) found that by 2025, house prices are set to rise by 50% - and if we don’t act now, this will impact FTBs, second steppers and last steppers, forcing many out of home ownership. “The Government has made efforts to address the issue of supply and demand, with Osborne outlining plans to build 200,000 new starter homes in his Autumn Statement, but four fifths of our agents think it simply isn’t enough. It’s all very well planning to build houses, but we need to move to action and get and the bricks and mortar on the ground, if we’re to solve the crisis we’re faced with.”

Lines & James achieves NFoPP QCF Level 3 Technical Award in Residential Letting and Property Management. Kylie Packham, a letting agent at Lines & James in Horsham, has achieved the National Federation of Property Professionals (NFoPP) QCF Level 3 Technical Award in Residential Letting and Property Management. The Technical Award, which is a nationally recognised industry qualification, meets the Association of Residential Letting Agents’ (ARLA) membership requirements for those looking to join the Association as a member agent. ARLA is the UK’s foremost professional body for letting agents. It aims to promote better regulation and higher practice standards in the UK private rented sector. Kylie has been working as a letting agent at Lines & James for 3 years. Kylie Packham of Lines & James comments: “It was important for me to secure this recognised qualification as a letting agent. It is not only a professional achievement but also a mark of professionalism and trust; it provides reassurance to tenants dealing with Lines & James that the agency adheres to the highest professional standards, and that employees are qualified and knowledgeable letting agents.” Lines & James is among a growing number of agents across the UK working with ARLA and the NFoPP
Awarding Body to become qualified and raise standards within the industry. Melfyn Williams, Chair of the Governing Body, adds: “ The NFoPP QCF Level 3 Technical Award is a regulated qualification ideal for candidates wanting to improve existing knowledge in the key areas related to the residential letting and property management. The NFoPP Awarding Body is committed to raising standards within the residential letting and property management sector through the provision of accredited, nationally recognised qualification, such as the Technical Award Lines & James has achieved.” David Cox, Managing Director of ARLA concludes: “ I congratulate Kylie on her achievement of the Level 3 qualification and hope to welcome her to full ARLA membership in the near future. “ARLA strives for better regulation in the private sector; with the support of letting agents across the UK recognising the need for higher standards and integrity in the sector, gaining an NFoPP qualification counts as a real stamp of professionalism and supports the drive for better practice within the industry.” For more information about NFoPP QCF Level 3 Technical Award please visit: www.nfopp-awardingbody.co.uk/qualifications/ For more information about ARLA please visit: www.arla.co.uk

Brothers unite to earn Horsham the points Saturday January 2 - London 2 South East Crowborough 0 – 31 Horsham Rugby Richard Ordidge - HRUFC The game in hand turned out to be a comfortable victory for the Green and Whites who now go into 2016 laying in third place in the league table after gaining promotion last season. The fixture was postponed from November, when Crowborough’s pitches were waterlogged, which again proved to be the case following the heavy rain over Christmas and the New Year, so the game was switched to Horsham. Even then large parts of Horsham’s 1st XV pitch were under water so that play was changed to the sloping roadside pitch, and then moved again to a further pitch when a Crowborough player suffered a serious injury with what looked to be a broken ankle and the thoughts of everyone at Horsham go out to him for a speedy recovery. With what is certainly a first in Horsham’s playing history, five of the starting line-up came from two sets of brothers with Richard and Michael Tredgett playing as well as Will, James and Tom Johnson, son’s of Andy Johnson who lead Horsham to historic league and cup success in the early 1990’s when Horsham were briefly the top side in Sussex. The watching Sussex President, Dewi Vaughan, who faced this Horsham line-up in their pomp when playing for Lewes said “If I could watch Horsham every week I would.” “This is the performance we have been waiting for”, said Horsham
Horsham's Andy Gray fending off a Crowborough tackle head coach Nick Stocker. “It has been eluding us for the last few games and I asked for increased focus and intensity. We put the effort in by training over Christmas and the New Year and by taking ownership the players delivered the result.” Despite making six changes to their starting line-up either tactically or due to injury, Horsham looked the more fluid of the two teams. The Green and Whites opened the scoring after 10 minutes when after a period of good intensity over several phases involving breaks by Liam Brady, Will Johnson and Michael Tredgett the ball was spun out wide for Declan Nwachukwu to cross the line. Horsham kept up the pressure only for the final pass to go down in the wet and sticky conditions and then the Green and Whites scored a fine try
from a first phase scrum on the halfway line and following excellent handling by the backs, good ground was made by Will Johnson and Will Bell and then finished by inter-passing between Andy Gray and James Johnson before Johnson scored. The half come to an end with a Gray try following a strong run and fine multiple phase play, and Horsham entered the break with a 19-0 lead following two conversions from Bell. For the second half play switched to another pitch following the injury to the Crowborough hooker. There was no let up from Horsham as they scored their bonus point fourth try after 45 minutes when after a fine set piece and multiple pick and go plays, space was created for James Johnson to put Gray into space to dummy his man and power through to score his
In appalling conditions Liam Brady is tackled in the fine win second try. Good power play at close quarters then saw Gray dive for the line for his hat-trick which was converted by Bell after a wave of attacks involving Jonny Whiting, Bell and James Johnson. Despite having their scrum-half yellow carded towards the end of the game Crowborough never gave up and prevented Horsham from adding to their tally. Stocker concluded, “I was most impressed with the set piece which was good throughout and we were also excellent at the breakdown. We hit the rucks and cleared players out providing our scrum-half with go forward ball which got our back line moving. I’m very happy with this performance which has seen us reach the half-way mark in third place. We
now need to maintain this level of intensity for the rest of the season. It was great to have Will Johnson back. Johnny Ordidge made an impact at half-time and Giles Barber added momentum. Ollie Harcus made some big carries on his debut at six, and Andy Gray looked a natural seven with a pick and go and then he drove the player back for one of his tries and then a show and go for another. The potency of our back row was there for all to see.” Horsham’s next fixture is away to Lewisham based Old Colfeians on January 9. Horsham Team: Bell; W Johnson, J Johnson, McCabe, Nwachukwu, T Johnson (Ordidge), Mills; Talbot (Barber), Grantham-Hill (Fisher), Brady; R Tredgett, Whiting; Harcus, Gray, M Tredgett.

Usually reliable Santa has been disappointing this year with local sporting wish lists remaining unfulfilled. Sharing top billing on the list has been a new football ground for Horsham Football Club and the retention of the Horsham Cricket Festival but neither have yet materialised. Horsham is a sporting town with much coveted facilities for a wide range of sports so it is sad that the town’s contribution towards our national game, football, takes place under ground sharing arrangements. And there is no place – in 2016 at least – for the Festival showcasing our summer game, cricket, previously attended by far the biggest crowds for professional sport in the district. Administrators work tirelessly to stage events at their clubs so it is to be hoped that the Council, businesses and the community recognise the value of these activities to work with the clubs to make sure that the best possible opportunities are provided, encouraging the healthy involvement of young participants and followers. Meanwhile, without being too
Local, national and world cricket is reeling from the shock announcement of the sad death of popular Sussex fast bowler Matthew Hobden. He took 5-62 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston in his second game for Sussex and was widely regarded as a future international prospect, having been selected for this winter’s forthcoming England Performance Programme. Many tributes have come in from local clubs and the world of cricket and players in England’s Cape Town test match wore black arm bands as a mark of respect. Eastbourne-born Matthew would have been 23 in March and had come up through the ranks of representative Sussex cricket, making his debut for the county in 2014. Last season he played against Nottinghamshire at the Horsham Festival when he dismissed their opener Brendan Taylor and centurion Captain Chris Read. Sussex were due to resume pre season training but Head Coach Mark Davis has confirmed that the players will be given as much time as they need to overcome the un-
Horsham FC's hunt for a ground continues in 2016 after the Hop Oast Site was refused greedy, but realistically perhaps, among other aspirations, but not exclusively, let us hope that 2016 will be an outstanding sporting year for the district with promotion for

expected death of their team mate, recalling painful memories of both Sussex all rounder Umer Rashid who drowned on the 2002 pre-season tour to Grenada and Surrey’s Tom Maynard who died in an accident shortly after he had appeared at the Horsham Festival in 2012.
Eastbourne-born Matthew would have been 23 in March and had come up through the ranks of representative Sussex Cricket England Lead Fast Bowling Coach Kevin Shine said: “Matthew’s potential was huge. He was improving rapidly and I’m certain he would have played for England.” While Mark Davis added: “We are all devastated by the news because Matthew was such a big character – a gentle giant, genuinely liked by everyone.”
