Search for mystery lottery winner phil dennett News Editor

Someone who bought a lottery ticket in Horsham is holding a ticket worth a small fortune, say organisers. At the time the District Post went to press the lucky holder of a EuroMillions prize worth £58,838.90 had yet to make a claim. Organisers say the winner is holding a ticket bought in the Horsham District. It could be a local person or someone from further afield who happened to be in the town. If they do not claim the money by early April the money will be lost to them. Earlier this week National Lottery players were urged to check and double-check their tickets for the chance to claim the prize. The holder matched the five main numbers and no Lucky Star numbers in the EuroMillions draw on October 9 last year. The winning EuroMillions numbers on that date were 1, 40, 42, 43, 47 and the Lucky Star numbers were 9 and 11. The lucky ticket-holder has until April 6 to claim their prize.. If no-one comes forward with the

winning ticket before the prize claim deadline, then the prize money, plus all the interest it has generated, will go to help National Lottery-funded projects across the UK. A National Lottery spokesperson said: “We’re eager to find the mystery ticket-holder and unite them with their winnings – this amazing prize could really make a huge difference to somebody’s life. We’re urging everyone who bought a EuroMillions ticket in this area to check their old tickets again or look anywhere a missing ticket could be hiding. “Try checking in the pockets of clothing, in wallets, bags and down the back of the sofa – someone out there could literally be sitting on a fortune. We have the champagne on ice and our fingers crossed that the lucky winner comes forward to claim their win.” To help jog EuroMillions players’ memories about what was happening around the date of the draw in question, rugby fans may remember that October 10 saw the final games in England’s World Cup pool. Whilst Australia beat Wales 15-6 to top the group, England’s emphatic 60-3 win over Uruguay at least restored some pride after a lacklustre World Cup campaign. Anyone who believes they have the winning ticket for any of the National Lottery draws within the 180-

entered in advance and lucky winners are notified online if their numbers come up. For further information call 0845 912 5000 or visit www. national-lottery.co.uk. Players can contact Camelot by telephoning the National Lottery Line during its normal operating hours.

Alternatively, players can email Camelot to confirm they intend to claim their prize but this email must be received at help@national-lottery. co.uk no later than the end, before 12 midnight, of the 180-day claim period, and the claim must subsequently be made in person.

Hopes of about 1,000 jobs on the empty Novartis site in Horsham hinge on approval for houses on part of the land. Workers would be employed at a new science park by 2018 under a West Sussex County Council scheme. But the success of the plan depends on money made from building houses to help pay for the conversion work and make it viable. District councillors will decide on the future of the site when the official planning processes start soon. And that will include decisions on whether or not to grant approval for the science park and the houses. Depending on the result the county council hopes to then complete purchase of the site. The county council told the District Post this week: “In accordance with Horsham’s Local Plan, we aim to transform two thirds of the 19.6 acre site into a science park. In order to make the development viable, we have set aside one third of the site for high quality housing. This proposal underlines our focus on developing a business park and retain employment use on the site. Plans are of course subject to planning permission in the usual way. We will be applying for outline consent for the site early in 2016, ahead of the completion of the sale. We are appointing a specialist London agency to assist with the onward marketing and development of the site, ideally to seek a single development partner who can adopt West Sussex’s vision. It is anticipated that formal

The old Novartis site planning will commence soon after the appointment of the development partner and work could start on site in 2017 with the first commercial tenants taking occupancy in 2018.” There were indications this week that Horsham District Council was likely to support the important housing element.

A Horsham District Council spokesperson told the Post: “When we were agreeing our local plan policies, the Novartis site was identified as a higher education facility with other related employment uses. However, that proposal is no longer being progressed as a result of Brighton University’s decision not to proceed with its plans.

The current proposal by West Sussex County Council focuses on ensuring high quality employment use remains on the majority of the site. We are very keen to ensure that a significant employment use is retained on the site and recognise that some housing is likely to be required to secure the successful redevelopment.”

Caring quartet prepare for quest to help charities Four women are preparing for a big fund raiser to help two charities. Their Pink Gift Fair 2016 will raise money for Dame Vera Lyn Children’s Charity and Cancer Research UK , and its website www.pinkgiftfair.co.uk has been created by ex-pupil of Tanbridge School. The fair takes place at Roffey Park which is not normally open to the public, with a preview night on September 30 and fair days on October 1 and 2. The women organising the fair are Kim Kelly, founder and managing director of Employment Plus based in Billingshurst, Sharon Gardener of Slinfold, Lisa Davidson, a stylist and interior designer from Loxwood and Sally Pavey from Warnham. Sally, a volunteer director of the fair, said: “We are very excited to be organising this event in year when Dame Vera Lyn celebrates her 99th Birthday. We look forward to selecting stalls at the end of April to ensure that this fair is not like other fairs, truly offering something exclusive for shoppers whilst benefiting to very worthy causes. “ The pink and blue ribbon gift box logo represents the two colours of the

charities. Helen Bournat, business development manager at Dame Vera Lyn Children’s Charity, said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen as one of the charities to benefit from The Pink Gift Fair. We are a small local charity that relies entirely on voluntary contributions to provide our vital service to children under five with cerebral palsy. We would like to wish The Pink Gift Fair every success with this event”. Sharon Baldwin of Cancer Research UK said: “Cancer Research UK is absolutely delighted to be part of The Pink Gift Fair, raising money for our research into breast cancer. Every day more than 140 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK, which makes it the most common type of cancer in the UK. Thanks to research, more than two thirds of women now survive the disease for 20 years or more. Our work underpins today’s treatments and has helped save many thousands of live. Our life-saving work relies on the money people give us, so it’s thanks to events like The Pink Gift Fair and the team of volunteers who organise it that we can keep improving the odds of

survival for each and everyone.” The fair will feature specific areas for homewards, gifts, food, fashion and beauty, and Lisa Davidson has the task of branding the fair with the pink and blue colours of the charities. Sharon, a volunteer fair director said: “We are currently looking for quality stalls to apply for stands and details can be found atwww.pinkgiftfair.co.uk. We can accommodate over 90 stalls in this wonderful modern venue with large free car parks and a venue that is easily accessible to all. “We will be able to offer full catering throughout the days, and have to thank Roffey Park for their support with staging the fair”. Kim, volunteer treasurer of the fair, said: “Of course I will be making sure that we are able to donate as much as possible to the charities and thus my staff at Employment Plus will be helping

with the event. It has always been our ethos to put something back into the local community and so I am delighted to be part of the team staging, what is hoped, to become a firm fixture on the annual calendar for all.” To apply email pinkgiftfair@gmail.com to receive an invitation or visitwww.pinkgiftfair.co.uk. Potential volunteers to help with the fair may contact the fair via the website www.pinkgiftfair.co.uk, through www.facebook.com/pinkgiftfair or follow them on Twitter @pinkgiftfair.

Jail time for Steyning sexual “predator” Wildlife boss warns against building houses on floodplains

Flooding near Twineham Building houses in floodplains is nonsensical, says a top wildlife expert. Dr Tony Whitbread, Chief Executive of the Sussex Wildlife Trust near Henfield, says he is also concerned that the simplistic messages often promoted on social media that flooding is caused by lack of dredging is causing upset and confusion, with bizarre claims that rivers are being left un-dredged to protect wildlife. He says the opposite is the case, as careful management of river catchments reduces flood risk downstream with the added bonus of encouraging a rich and varied wildlife. Dr Whitbread said:”How we manage river valleys can increase, or reduce, the flood risk to people living downstream. Building hard flood defences, concreting land, woodland removal and river dredging upstream increases flood risk. “But, allowing flood plains to flood, and then slowly releasing water afterwards, reduces the height of a river in flood when we experience huge amounts or persistent rainfall. “Water has to go somewhere. If we defend or dredge one area then the water will just go somewhere else. “If we prevent flood plains from flooding, there’s a clue in the name, then water will move to the next weak point, often an urban area.’ The Government should encourage landowners to carry out more work to reduce flood risk, said Dr Whitbread. He added: “In Sussex, there are now many examples of landowners doing woodland planting, washland creation and river re-naturalisation to reduce flood risk and benefit wildlife. What is needed is good government policy and financial packages to enable it to happen on a large scale. There

is a place for dredging and hard defences but within a far more sophisticated approach to managing the whole catchment.” Last week the Post reported on flooding at Twineham near an area where a huge housing project, since rejected, was proposed.

A “predator” who sexually assaulted teenage boys at a Steyning community centre is now serving a 16-year jail sentence. Tim Douglass, 56, who once lived in Steyning, commmited some offences at the villages’s Cuthman Centre community facility when he was a volunteer teaching music, between 2004 and 2009. A court heard other assaults happened at an address at Shooting Fields in Steyning where Douglass then lived, and other nearby locations, between the same dates. Detective Constable Beccy Hopkins of West Sussex CID said: "In sentencing Douglass, Judge David Rennie described him as 'predatory, manipulative and persistent' a description with which I fully agree. He systematically groomed his victims, some over considerable periods of time, without a concern for their age, vulnerability or for any distress caused to them. "All the victims gave evidence in court, and we admired the way in which they did so. Their evidence was key to the case, and demonstrates again that we can help achieve justice for such victims however long ago the offences occurred." Douglass will also serve a further four-year extended sentence on licence, after his sentencing at Hove Crown Court on Thursday of last week. He will also be a registered sex offender for life. Douglass, a caterer, of Upper Market Street, Hove, but previously of addresses at Steyning and Houghton, had been convicted on November 30 at the same court, after a trial, of 11 sexual offences against six boys, and of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. The offences were rape and sexu-

“Predator” Tim Douglass al assault on a 17-year old boy, and rape of another 17-year old boy, on his houseboat on the River Arun at Houghton in 2013; two counts of sexual activity with a boy aged between 14 and 15 between 2004 and 2006; two counts of sexual assault on another young boy between 2005 and 2008; two counts of sexual assault on another young boy between 2006 and 2008; and one count of sexual assault on another young boy between 2007 and 2009. He was also found guilty of conspiring to pervert the course of justice along with his partner, David Long, 21, of the same address. This was in relation to them both agreeing to give

false information to police of David Long's whereabouts at the time of one of the rapes in 2013. Long also appeared in Court on 7 January, and was sentenced to two years imprisonment suspended for two years. He was also ordered to carry out 300 hours unpaid work. None of the offences took place in Hampshire, where Douglass formerly lived in Waterlooville. Douglass ran the Big Pan Paella Co, of Fort Rd, Littlehampton. Police emphasised after the hearing that there are no current safeguarding issues for local young people. The 2004-2009 victims came forward during the investigation of the rapes, which began in 2013.

Art deco building to be saved at Novartis site

An artist’s impression of the centre

An art deco building will be saved when the empty Novartis site in Horsham is re-developed for a science park (see story on page 2). The building is considered a local landmark and the design of the centre and houses will take into account its setting and use it to create homes. West Sussex County Council, which is buying the site, said: “Under the agreement with Novartis, all buildings on the site will be cleared except the locally important 1930s Art Deco building. That will be converted for residential use and the avenue of cedar trees leading to its door will also be protected.” Horsham District Council Leader Ray Dawe said: “The plan to develop a health and life sciences business park in order to protect employment and improve economic growth, alongside some residential development, is important for the district and is also a fitting legacy for one of the largest healthcare groups in the world. “There will be a number of planning and contractual procedures that West Sussex will need to follow and we will work closely with them to support their vision while protecting the Art Deco former HQ building and its setting.” Hugh O’Dowd, Country President and General Manager for United Kingdom and Ireland for Novartis Pharmaceuticals said: “I am delighted to be able to confirm that we are in detailed discussions with West Sussex County Council about purchasing our former Horsham site at Wimblehurst Road. We have agreed initial heads of terms and are now working on full contracts, with the aim of completing negotiations by early summer 2016. This is good news for Horsham and its residents as West Sussex County Council intends to bring high skilled jobs to the area, as well as develop some local housing. If the new campus becomes a health and life sciences hub for the region as West Sussex County Council intend, it will also help to realise our ambition of leaving a scientific legacy at the site.” Mike Hannay, Vice President and General Manager of Horshambased Fisher Clinical Services UK, said: “This is fantastic news for Horsham and West Sussex, building as it does on the scientific heritage of our area. The new Science and Business Park is an important step in enhancing our county’s role in the development of innovative new medicines and healthcare technologies.” Johan Sedihn, Chairman of Elekta Limited, said: “These are exciting times for West Sussex with another strategic investment in the region. Following hot on the heels of the announcement of Elekta’s own Cornerstone development, providing a state of the art technological and customer innovation centre, the county looks to be in fine shape as we maintain our lead in key scientific markets. West Sussex businesses have given the world so many global scientific innovations and it’s wonderful to see private and public sectors standing shoulder to should as we plan for the future.”

Public danger knifeman jailed for Henfield attack Warning for A Henfield man who smashed a car window with his head then stabbed the owner inside has been jailed. Shane Elliott was arrested at his home in Wantley Hill Estate after police received reports of a violent attack in the same street on the afternoon of April 19 last year. The victim had been sat in his parked car at the entrance to the road when he noticed Elliott, whom he recognised, walk past. About 10 minutes later, Elliott returned and approached the vehicle, prompting the victim to lock the doors. He moved across to the passenger seat, at which point Elliott went around the vehicle and smashed the passenger window with his head. He then attacked the man with a large kitchen knife, causing wounds to his left hand and arm. The victim, then aged 29 and from Steyning, managed to escape through the driver's side and ran to a friend's house for safety. Police were called and enquiries led them to arrest Elliott, 33, previously of Horley in Surrey, on suspicion of attempted murder. However, he denied the offence and instead pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm, and was sentenced to 10 years in custody, to serve four years on licence, at Lewes Crown Court last week. He was also ordered to pay a £120 victim surcharge. His partner Virginia Froud, also known as Virginia Kembery, was

convicted at the same court on the same date, of conspiring to pervert the course of justice. Froud, 48, of Wantley Hill Estate, was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment. Detective Constable Laura Sinden said: "This was a nasty attack in which Elliott used his head to smash a car window and then attack the victim with a knife.

Shane Elliott was arrested at his home in Wantley Hill Estate after police received reports of a violent attack "The victim managed to get out of the car and run to a nearby address, where he was treated by paramedics. It is lucky he did not sustain more serious injuries. "Elliott was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder due to the verbal threats to kill he made. However, he pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to commit GBH and was sentenced accordingly. "He is clearly a danger to the public, and by locking him up we are maintaining the safety of the local community."

wood burners Users of wood burners have been warned to take extra care over the winter after two recent house fires. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is urging owners of wood burners to take extra care after attending two house fires involving the appliances. Watch manager at Horsham Fire Station Kieran Smith said: “We would strongly advise people not to stack logs or place any other combustible materials directly next to wood burners and make sure that your fire is extinguished before you go out or go to bed. “We would also like to remind people of the importance of having a working smoke detector on each level of their home and testing them regularly.” West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service offers the following advice: Ensure your fire is fully extinguished before going to bed or leaving the house; make sure your appliance is installed and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions; only burn dry seasoned wood that has been split properly; Don’t use wood that has been rained on or is damp. If it got wet in the rain, take small amounts inside to dry out before putting it on the fire; Chimneys should be swept before the start of each heating season and should also be inspected regularly; do not stack logs or place any other combustible materials immediately adjacent to the stove or boiler; Ensure that you have a working smoke detector installed on each level of your home.

Steve gives a Titanic talk to youngsters Success powers Collyer’s College students into 2016 The Titanic, beers, and bio fuels educated and amused young school pupils. Analytical chemist and robot expert Steve Elliott highlighted them during Farlington School’s third Vive Lecture at Horsham. The lecture focused on how robots are used in science and gave an insight into some of the projects that Steve has worked on. He showed how a large piece of the Titanic had not eroded because of the micro-organisms that were surviving and reproducing in a very hostile environment on the seabed. The students were also given an understanding of how biofuels and beer could be important in modern day science and in the future. The potential of robots to collect data with precision and volume was

discussed, as was the question as to whether we could have robots that could make decisions. The lecture ended with the girls using a small robot and micropipettes to transfer small volumes of liquid. Jean Salt, Farlington’s Head of Learning Support and Challenge, said: “It was an extremely fascinating and informative session. The girls especially enjoyed the interactive part of the lecture. Though aimed at Farlington scholars, we are always keen to welcome interested students from other schools to our Vive Lectures.” The Vive Lectures are part of Farlington’s Scholarship Enrichment Programme. Interesting and engaging speakers help students widen their learning within and beyond the curriculum.

Support group gets boost

BREAKING NEWS CLINICALLY PROVEN TO HELP REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF TINNUTUS

People living with the effects of a stroke are looking forward to a day out after their club was granted nearly £500 from a charity fund. The Phoenix Support Stroke Club, based in Horsham, made a bid for £495 to help fund outings for members of the club. House builder Persimmon Homes South East is helping stroke patients plan a day out for members of their support group by giving it money from its Community Champions fund. Ann Wilson, from the group, made the winning bid. She said: “We have been established since 1979 to provide support and stimulation and to restore confidence in a caring and comfortable environment. “To hire a coach that can accommodate more than one wheelchair at a time costs us £495 per day. This year we went to the Wey and Arun canal on two consecutive days which cost us £990 just for transport. “It was worth every penny to enable 42 of our members to have a day out which they would otherwise not have been able to do as a group. “We are now planning our next outing so need to raise funds for the transport. We raise money by doing raffles, applying for grants, from bequests and from general donations,

so this grant will be huge boost to our members.” Tom Wright, managing director for Persimmon Homes South East, said the Community Champions initiative was a way of supporting people across every city, town and village where the company works. He said: “We are so pleased to hand over this donation to the Phoenix Stroke Club. It was clear just how important this group is to its members and their families in restoring confidence and improving communication and mobility and it seemed fitting we did what we could to support them.” The Persimmon Homes Community Champions fund has £2,000 each month to hand out to worthy causes to match their fundraising activities. Tom added: “Persimmon Homes South East has had a fantastic response to its Community Champions scheme and it is always a difficult choice from so many worthy causes. “If people were unsuccessful last month, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next Community Champion.” To nominate and to find out about the terms and conditions people visit www.persimmonhomes.com/charity

Carers get new support group Ready for Race for Life Carers of people with dementia will see a new support group for them launched at West Chiltington next month. Run by Alzheimer’s Society West Chiltington, it will start on February 2. The group will meet at West Chiltington Sports Pavilion, The Recreation Ground off Mill Road on the first Tuesday of the month between 10.30am and 12.30pm. More than 2,000 in the Horsham area live with dementia. Organisers say the new group provides a social atmosphere that aims to help cares of people with dementia to talk to other carers about how dementia affects their lives. Carers can discuss issues they face with others in a similar situation and share practical information. Alzheimer’s Society staff and trained volunteers are on hand to help attendees get the most out of the session. Joy Martin, Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Support Manager for the area, said: “We’re really excited to be launching this new group in West Chiltington. Carers support groups can make a huge difference to people’s sense of wellbeing, helping people to share experiences and knowledge, enabling them to manage the day-to-day challenges and prepare for the future. “There are more than 2,100 peo-

ple living with dementia in the Horsham area. With the right support people can live well with the condition for a number of years.” As well as carers support groups, Alzheimer’s Society in West Sussex has a number of services including Dementia Advisors and Dementia

Support Workers, Dementia Cafes, the Dementia Care and Support Service, Advocacy and the Carers Information and Support Programme. To find out more about the new or existing groups visit alzheimers.org. uk/localinformation or contact our Sussex Helpline on 01403 213017.

Women are invited to enter and start training for the 2016 Race for Life five kilometre fund-raiser at Horsham Park. As the event takes place on Sunday, June 5, organisers say women who enter now will be creating their own goal to aim for later in the year, when the warmer weather makes staying on the sofa less tempting. Jenny Ainsworth, Cancer Research UK’s Horsham Event Manager, said: “Signing up to take part in Race for Life is a great way for women to commit to get a little more active. “Race for Life events are noncompetitive. Taking part is not about being fit or fast and participants can choose to walk, jog, or run around the course. The atmosphere is incredibly supportive. Pledging to take part, alongside thousands of likeminded women, is a great motivation to get fitter. Planning to raise money for life-saving research could prove more of an incentive to get up and get moving than the usual New Year’s resolution to shift the post-Christmas pounds.” One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Survival rates have doubled since the early 1970s. The Race for Life fund-raisers are for women only and raise millions

of pounds every year nationally to help beat cancer sooner by funding life-saving research. Last year 1,300 women took part in Race for Life in Horsham and raised £90,000. This year organisers would like to see 1,500 women and girls stride out to help raise a target of £100,000. Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across Sussex. Jenny said: “Race for Life is an amazing way to celebrate everyone we love who has survived cancer. It’s also an emotional and moving way to pay tribute to those dear to us whose lives have been cut short by the disease. “Our participants make Race for Life a truly uplifting, inspiring experience. That’s why we’re calling on women of all ages to sign up now to their event in Horsham and pledge to stand together, shoulder to shoulder, on the front line against cancer. Together, we can unleash a powerful fighting spirit to stop cancer in its tracks.” Women who sign up for 5k and 10k events in January can benefit from a specially reduced fee of £10.00. Sarah finds support work changes life Have your say on schools On a visit to her local supermarket two years ago, Sarah Sale saw a poster which was to help lead her life in a new direction. And this month a charity hopes to recruit more volunteers like her. Sarah’s story started when local charity Home-Start, working in the Horsham, Crawley, and Mid Sussex area, was advertising its training course to become a family support volunteer and it came at just the right time for Sarah. She said: “I was thinking about getting back to work after having my children and I was interested in working with families, but wasn’t sure how exactly.” “Plus, the training seemed to offer a good way to develop new skills and it would fit around my children. So I got in touch with the HomeStart office”. Sarah’s training built on the skills she already had as a parent and helped give her the knowledge and confidence to take on the role of visiting families in their home, to give them the support they needed to deal with challenging circumstances. Sarah helped four families during her time with Home-Start, giving practical and emotional support during regular weekly visits. Sarah said: “I’d done office work before, so my comfort zone was really pushed sometimes, but it showed me I can cope with more than I realised. Right from the

start, there was support in place for me and I was able to receive a good mix of further training too, covering things like First Aid, Autism Awareness and Business Admin.” Sarah enjoyed making a difference to others and seeing the positive changes she could help the families make. And her time volunteering led to changes for her too. She said: “I was able to get a job with West Sussex Probation service, who said my experiences with HomeStart made me an ideal candidate for the role.” “Volunteering gave me the confidence to

get back into work and being able to put the work and training I’d done on my CV really helped with my job search. I would definitely recommend volunteering with HomeStart to anyone. I got a lot out of it and it was a great experience for me.” For people interested in volunteering Home-Start CHAMS is holding another training course for homevisiting volunteers starting on January 26 and places are available now. To find out more, please visit http://www. homestartchams.org.uk/ volunteering/ , or call them on 01293 416327.

Parents have until February 12 to take part in a second consultation into the organisation of schools in Storrington and the surrounding areas. The STARS area, as it is known locally, is the last remaining location in West Sussex where schools are not organised in line with the Key Stages of the National Curriculum. Across the rest of the county, and most of the country, pupils transfer to secondary schools at the end of Key Stage 2 (11 years old). An initial public consultation took place earlier this year when parents, schools and local communities were asked to give their views on the approach to education in the area and whether there should be a change to the age at which pupils transfer to secondary schools. Now a further consultation on specific proposals for each school in the area is being held by Wes Sussex County Council. The proposals are to: • Increase the age range from age 4–10 (Year R–Year 5) to become age 4-11 (Year R-Year 6) primary schools with effect from 1 September 2017 at Amberley CE First School, Ashington CE First School, St Mary’s CE First School, Washington, Storrington First School and West Chiltington First School. • Increase the Published Admission Number from 14 to15 and increase the age range at Thakeham First School from age 4–10 (Year R–Year 5) to become an age 4-11 (Year R-Year 6) primary school with effect from 1 September 2017 and relocate the school

to buildings appropriate for primary phase education in part of the current Rydon Community College campus in Rock Road, Thakeham. • Close Rydon Community College with effect from 31 August 2017 and open a second site of Steyning Grammar School in part of the current Rydon Community College Campus in Rock Road, Thakeham, providing education provision for the age range 11-12 (Year 7 and Year 8) with effect from 1 September 2017. The consultation was launched on January 4 and will run until February 12. A series of public meetings has also been arranged and held and those remaining are January 20 from 6-7.30pm at Steyning Grammar School and January 26 from 6-7.30pm at Ashington CE First School. Richard Burrett, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “We want to hear people’s views on these proposals and therefore I would urge everyone to take part in this further consultation. “I am keen to secure a sustainable, long-term education system for children in the Storrington area. I would ask people to read the proposals and give us their considered thoughts on how we can all work together in the best interests of the children.” People can respond to the consultation online atwww.westsussex.gov. uk, by emailing schoolconsultations@ westsussex.gov.uk or by picking up a consultation booklet from one of the schools, a local library or at one of the public meetings.

Glimpse Horsham’s past in “Originals Framed” exhibition

A photographic exhibition at Horsham Museum reveals stories from the town’s Horsham’s past. The original photographs are on show until February 27 and admission is free. Horsham Council says it is the first time such an exhibition of originals has been staged. This small exhibition has what the museum describes as a remarkable photograph of the Prince of Wales sitting in a carriage in front of Horsham station, with the station festooned with yards of fabric, covering every inch of brickwork. The Prince had just arrived from London to Horsham to lay the foundation stone of Christ’s Hospital school.

Despite its present historical value the photograph was not used as a record of the event, but as an advertising and marketing ploy by a town saddler who boasted that he made the harness. Later research revealed that was an exaggeration, as he had bought much of the harness already made. The museum says that the small but select display repays the time taken to view the images, as they show Horsham people in various activities. The solemn unveiling of the highly contentious war memorial enabled the photographer Copnell to create a fascinating rich panoramic shot, suggesting the pathos and sense of hurt three years after war ended.

Contrast that with the opening of the Horsham Bowls club in 1906, which is a rare record of an event that is barely recorded in the town’s history. In fact, the recent move to its new location and discussion over its re-development caused more comments than its opening 109 years ago. Whilst the photographs freeze time, time does not stop for the photographs or the chemicals in the photograph. The fragility of some frames and mounts mean that for conservation reasons most of the museums extensive collections are not in frames. However, some have been kept in their original frames. It is these that are on display in Originals Framed. Two of the pictures are shown.

Hospital staff show off work to MP Busy year as 50th

Staff at Horsham Hospital hosted a visit from Horsham MP Jeremy Quin to give him an idea of the work they do. The workers from the Sussex Community NHS Trust were from community, nursing and therapy

teams based at the hospital. They support people to live healthy, independent lives in their own homes as well as support people to get back home after a period of hospital stay. The service includes a Time to Talk self-referral service which provides

talking therapy treatments to help people with stress, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, low self-esteem and relationship difficulties. Mr Quin saw the Horizon Unit, a 38-bedded unit for people who need short-term rehabilitation or palliative care. He heard that the unit is seeing more elderly people with multiple, complex conditions including dementia. The hospital also has a minor injuries unit, which includes treatment of fractures the people of all ages. Mr Quin said: “Horsham Hospital is held with enormous affection by local people. The range and quality of services provided is impressive as is the dedication of all who work there. I greatly enjoyed meeting the staff and management at the hospital, which I hope can be the centre for increased services as we continue to provide for a growing population.”

Front line police officers using new weapon to combat domestic violence Front line officers are ready to use new domestic violence laws, says Sussex Police. Training had started before the new laws were brought in from December 29, when the Home Office announced that the new domestic abuse offence of Controlling or Coercive Behaviour took effect. Detective Chief Inspector Ali Eaton of the Sussex Police Public Protection Branch said: "Sussex Police and our domestic abuse partners welcome this new legislation. It closes a gap in the law around patterns of controlling or coercive behaviour. The new law is powerful and will send a strong message to perpetrators as it is arrestable and can carry a sentence up to five years' imprisonment. "Domestic abuse in a relationship can take many forms and while most people can see the results of physical violence, there can also be mental, emotional and exploitive behaviour, depriving victims of their independence by regulating their everyday behaviour. "It is insidious and manipulative and designed to destroy a victim's confidence. Quite often taking place behind closed doors, the emotional abuse may be invisible, but the damage to victims is significant. This new legislation will allow the authorities to tackle this crime and arrest abusers. "We have already invested in the training of our frontline officers to ensure they understand the new legislation and to highlight the damage controlling and coercive behavior can inflict upon a victim. The report by HM Inspector of Constabulary on 15 December recognises the hard work that is put in by Sussex Police and our partners to tackle vulnerability including domestic abuse in all its forms. "Our Operation Ribbon campaign is currently ensuring dedicated police patrols are available over the Christmas and New Year period to respond to calls about domestic abuse, but our efforts are unceasing all through the year and officers will

be ready to use this new law whenever the circumstances justify it." For advice and support in Sussex visit www.sussex.police.uk or call 101. To join in the Twitter debate, use #talktous.

anniversary celebrated

Retired and semi-retired people had a busy year as their Probus club celebrated the organisation’s 50th anniversary. President of Horsham Probus Graham Ticktum reports that 2015 was another very successful year for the members, who have participated in many varied activities. The club is aimed at retired and semi-retired people with a background in business, commerce, industry or the public sector who are keen to continue with an active lifestyle and indulge their range of interests with others at a similar stage in life. The ethos is based on camaraderie, friendship and care for other members. The programme of events offers members the choice of everything from regular country walks, golf, and bridge to indoor bowls, ten pin bowling and frequent outings to places of interest. Recent visits have included RHS Gardens at Wisley, a Windsor river trip and Chichester Theatre, and

members are looking forward to a guided tour of BBC studios. There have also been several lunches arranged at various venues in the local area. Partners are welcomed to all activities and events, and the club organises short holidays in the UK in spring and autumn. The club holds its monthly meetings for members on the second Monday morning of the month at the Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre. The business part of the meeting includes reports on current and forthcoming activities followed by an entertaining talk on all manner of topics of general interest. This is rounded off with an optional inexpensive lunch at the adjacent bowls centre. The club says it has a limited number of vacancies, and anyone interested in finding out more should visit the website at https://sites. google.com/site/probushorshamweald/ or contact the membership secretary on probusweald@gmail. com.

Horsham Music Circle preview of the 74th Season concerts in 2016 Local music enthusiasts have a splendid choice of concerts going in the coming months. The Horsham Music Circle continues its 74th Season in 2016 and hopes to entice some new members with its subscription package of four fantastic concerts. The Circle is delighted to be working in association with The Capitol Horsham, in presenting the classical guitarist Miloš Karadagli , on March 2. Milos is one of today’s ‘superstars’ and hugely popular. He has achieved international recognition as one of the most exciting and communicative classical guitarists of today, hailed as “probably the biggest classical-guitar phenomenon since John Williams and Julian Bream”. Also featured are two chamber music groups; the Manchester Piano Trio (Due to perform in February 12 at The Drill Hall) has a star line up of players with well established careers as soloists, chamber music specialists and orchestral players; Jeremy Young, piano, Adi Brett, violin and Nicholas Trygstad, cello, include popular trios by Beethoven and Mendelssohn, together with John Ireland’s Piano Trio, written in 1917, which reflects Ireland’s emotional response to World War 1: the award winning Aurea Quartet (May 21 -The

Drill Hall) has studied with many of the country’s renowned string quartets and were first prizewinners of the St. Martin’s Chamber Music Competition 2014. They have also won all the chamber music prizes at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and prizes in other prestigious competitions. They now take up residencies in Scotland, St John’s Smith Square and the Wye Valley Chamber Festival. In contrast, an audience will be treated to a grand tour of the baroque era by flautist and recorder player Annabel Knight with harpsichordist Robin Bigwood (April 16 - St Mark’s Church). They are passionate about bringing ‘old’ music to life again! Apart from their duo concerts they both work with the best of the early music ensembles in the UK. They are also husband and wife and live near Dorking, so will enjoy having a concert engagement together on their doorstep, for a change! To get the best deal, an attractive subscription ticket is available for all four concerts or individual tickets can be obtained in advance or on the door. Acoustic Strawbs at The Hawth Studio FOREVER IN BLUE JEANS Saturday 30 January 7.30pm

FIRST LADIES OF SONG Friday 5 February 7.30pm

Dave Cousins, along with lead guitarist, Dave Lambert, and the astonishingly versatile, Chas Cronk, who together formed the frontline of the classic 1970s line-up of Strawbs, head to Crawley for one night only January 30. In the USA and Canada, Strawbs sold more records per head of population, than in any other country. In the USA, the band can boast seven consecutive albums in the Billboard Top 200. The band’s most successful album, Hero And Heroine, was certified gold in Canada many years ago, but since its re-release on CD in the late 1990s, the album has sold over 20,000 copies in Canada alone – an

extraordinary figure. Strawbs are often mentioned in the same breath as progressive rock bands like Yes, King Crimson, and the Moody Blues. It is well documented that Rick Wakeman left Strawbs for Yes, but he returned, to join Dave Cousins onstage at the band’s 40th Anniversary Celebration. Strawbs have a unique component in their intricate prog-rock music they emerged out of the British Folk Movement of the mid-1960s. The band started life as the Strawberry Hill Boys, playing bluegrass, before moving into the mainstream, by making the first Strawbs album, All

Our Own Work, with Sandy Denny in 1967, a full year before she recorded her first album with Fairport Convention. The album attracted the attention of A&M Records in Hollywood, who signed Strawbs as their first British band. Strawbs has a devoted fan base that continues to grow on the strength of albums like Grave New World, Bursting At The Seams, Hero And Heroine and Ghosts, and classic songs such as Lay Down, A Glimpse Of Heaven, and Benedictus. Tickets: £16.50, can be purchased from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting www.hawth. co.uk.

Obesity Awareness Week 11-18 January Overweight? Don’t suffer in silence - weight loss support is available Help is at hand for people who are struggling to lose weight and are perhaps trying to cope with an added health pressure, such as diabetes or arthritis. One in four of the population is obese, which creates a greater risk of life-threatening conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and some cancers including breast cancer and bowel cancer. Free programmes are available through your local Wellbeing Hub, aimed at people who may have tried to lose weight on their own but need support from health experts and dieticians. For people who have tried these sessions but have not achieved their weight loss goal there is more intensive weight management support accessible via GPs. The weight loss programmes range from 12 weeks to a year or more, depending on individual

programmes work is by helping to break a cycle where a person feels unable to exercise due to a related difficulty. For example, arthritis, which has a knock-on effect on weight. “Through the guidance of health, exercise and dietary experts you can get down to a weight that is more manageable. Dual Strength and Fitness launches Last Saturday saw the long awaited launch of Horsham’s newest fitness facility, Dual Strength and Fitness, which opened doors to freshly enlisted members and those wishing to take a tour of the new facilities. Owners Matt Young and Olly Melcio have spent two years researching a new concept that can cater to everyone. Having spent much of their careers working in gyms and providing personal training, both Matt and Olly identified a need for something new - a low cost, no contract gym designed for those of all fitness levels, from beginners to more experienced sportsmen, for the next level of fitness. Naturally, the gym is fitted out in the latest high-quality equipment. Discussing the gym, Matt Young said: “Dual Strength and Fitness is your new and exciting low cost functional training facility, catering for all levels of physical ability. We offer top of the range strength and conditioning equipment, the very best in customer service, and onsite highly-qualified personal trainers to help you reach and exceed your goals. We're passionate about offering you the right training environment, at the right price without compromising on service.” I took a preview on Friday before the opening to see for myself what exactly was on offer. I was im-

pressed with the layout, offering a cardio area with treadmills, cross trainers, rowing machines and even a grassed training area with ropes, slam balls and sleds. There is an area for classes which is equipped to offer group training, from circuit

and bring the most current fitness trends, research and experience to Dual members. Being independent gives us the flexibility to offer our members what they are looking for, we have listened to our clients and have achieved the first task. Dual Fitness is unique and brings all the best elements together, we have a fantastic network of consultants in all areas of performance, whose services will be on offer privately. Alan Dean is our resident sports therapist, already a hit with our members, and alongside Alan our members have the option to engage with personal trainers, undertake rehab and talk to professionals in nutrition and lifestyle. We welcome new comers looking for a friendly welcoming atmosphere with qualified staff on hand to ensure every benefit is gained from your workout.” Memberships are very competitive at just £19.99 a month, or £199 for an annual membership. Dual offer a trial day for just £5 so you can come and try it out before signing up. Corporate membership deals are also available. Opening hours are 6am to 10pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 8pm Saturday and Sunday. For more information you can visit their website www.dualstrenghandfitness.co.uk call 01403 260707 or pop in to their premises at Blatchford Road for a tour.

Both Matt and Olly identified a need for something new - a low cost, no contract gym designed for those of all fitness levels, from beginners to more experienced sportsmen, for the next level of fitness training to boxercise. The weights area is similarly impressive, again equipped to cater for all needs starting at 1 Kg up to 50 Kg for the more experienced. Speaking further, Matt stated: “It doesn’t stop here, we have not just designed a gym with the latest equipment, we continue to provide the best service to our members

Farlington girls take a short course in self-defence Farlington Sixth Formers have recently undertaken a short course in self-defence in their Friday afternoon ‘fitness for life’ sessions. Two instructors from SAMA Karate spent time with the girls, teaching them valuable skills and strategies, to help them, should they ever find themselves under attack. “We learnt several different skills and manoeuvres which would help us if we ever got into a dangerous situation, for example, being attacked from both front and side, being pinned to the ground and being dragged away,” said Isabelle Speight, Upper Sixth. Rebecca Briggs, Upper Sixth, said: “We were paired up in order to practise these moves on each other and tried to imagine that we were in a real life situation. Whilst this was difficult at first, we soon got over our initial giggles and began to really act out or play attacks, of course, always screaming ‘fire!’ Everyone thoroughly enjoyed these sessions and we are very grateful for this opportunity and know that we will take this important knowledge with us to university and beyond.” Sara Whittaker, Director of PE and Games at Farlington, said: “These lessons are practical and important for the girls. It is all part of our wider aim to build the girls’ confidence, whether it is on the hockey pitch or learning something, which hopefully, they may never have to use, such as how to defend oneself.”

Following on from last week, we saw Chrissy start her new detox and fitness challenge. Speaking about the challenge, Chrissy stated: “I have survived the first week and, to be honest, the task is not as impossible as I first thought. Mitzi provided me with a detox eating plan which I have followed and, through basic educating on the concept of detox and clean eating, it really wasn’t that hard. “I have stuck to the basic rules of no diary, meat, wheat, caffeine and alcohol. Anything processed is a big no, however it’s hard to even find anything when you are sticking with the clean detox rules. I have not gone hungry - I have had oats, fruit, nuts and live yogurt for breakfast, salads, lentils, beans, fish and soups for lunch and dinner with all my portions heavy on super greens. I used to consume above the wom-

en’s weekly units in alcohol and I thought I would struggle here but I have succeeded without any problems. I have broken that habit and after 8 days I don’t even miss it (too much).” Mitzi explained: “When it comes to body cleansing, detox is about more than just diet, although that is an important place to start. Toxins build up in our blood but also on our skin and in our hair. Toxins affect the body's natural ability to burn fat, leading to weight gain. Diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure are directly linked to weight issues. Detoxing rids the body of toxins stored in fat cells and increases metabolism.’ Chrissy’s fantastic results this week is the result of both the detox and her introduction to exercise. Water retention is the first to be attacked - a common misconception

is that water retention should not be taken seriously, yet the term water retention (also known as fluid retention) signifies an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the circulatory system or within the tissues or cavities of the body. Water is found both inside and outside the body's cells. This is the first vital stage to becoming healthier as now her body will be able to work on fat burning. Chrissy said: “The dreaded exercise has been close to enjoyable, which I never thought would go in the same sentence. Mitzi has been great in helping me and I have been feeling really good. I still find it embarrassing as my fitness levels are so poor but I know it will improve and I am thriving in the challenges I am facing. I am doing a circuit training class this week which will be the first class I have taken in about 10 years… here it goes!”

Shape code of practice for commercial dog walkers The Kennel Club, the UK’s largest organisation dedicated to the health and welfare of dogs, is seeking the views of all dog walkers around the UK, to help shape a nationwide code of practice for commercial dog walkers (CDW). In 2016, the Kennel Club will publish its first Code of Practice for Commercial Dog Walkers, for people who walk other people’s dogs for payment, and to ensure that it is as effective and relevant as possible, the Kennel Club wants to know the views of commercial dog walkers, their clients and people who walk their own dog(s). The Kennel Club has launched a questionnaire, which will run until February 5, for anyone who walks a dog. The Code of Practice for Commercial Dog Walkers aims to: help dog owners employ the most responsible CDWs; increase professionalism by all CDWs; improve dog safety and welfare; help CDWs be ambassadors for responsible dog ownership; minimise any problems for wildlife, livestock and other greenspace users; help land managers deal with irresponsible dog walking. Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: “With the number of com-

mercial dog walkers ever increasing, we want to provide a concise and effective code of practice to help them operate professionally, with safety and consideration at the core of their services. This will help to ensure that dog owners who wish to use their services can do so knowing that their dog is in good hands, the dogs themselves will be kept happy and safe, and that everyone who uses public places can do so harmoniously. “We would encourage as many dog owners as possible to have their say by spending a few minutes filling out the survey, to ensure that the code of practice is as effective and beneficial as possible, to dogs, dog owners and commercial dog walkers.” Visit www.dogwalkingsurvey.org. uk to complete the survey. Responses to the questionnaire will remain confidential and results will only be disclosed in summary form. After completing the survey, participants can opt in to be kept up to date about the code of practice and enter a prize draw to win one of three pairs of day tickets to Crufts, the world’s biggest and best dog show, held at the NEC in Birmingham from March 1013, 2016. Visit www.crufts.org.uk for more information on the show.

Arthur Lodge - Tips for Getting Your Cat to the Vet

There are more cats in the UK than dogs, yet despite their popularity, there are reports that cats are brought to the vet less often than dogs. Why is this true? Don’t cat owners love their pets as much as dog owners do? Of course they do, so why the discrepancy? Anyone with cats will tell you that they don’t go as often as they should because their cats hate going to the vet. Some cats become so stressed that they vomit or defecate from fear. Others transform into hissing and spitting balls of fury. You know you should be taking your cat to the vet for their routine health examination and vaccinations at least once a year, and more frequently if you have a senior cat, but the mere thought of it probably makes your blood pressure rise. Is there anything you do to make the visit less stressful for you and your cat? Here are a few tips to make the visit a more pleasant experience for you and your cat.. 1. Bring out the carrier out a few days ahead so that your cat can become accustomed to it. Leave the door of the crate open so they can come and go and explore as they please. 2. Spray the interior of your cat carrier with a synthetic feline pheromone product. These products have been shown to prevent and decrease stress in cats 3. Use lots of treats. Put some your cat’s favourite treats inside the carrier so that your cat associates the carrier with a positive experience. Avoid treats if your cat is being fasted for anaesthesia 4. Make the carrier more inviting

by placing a blanket from home or favourite toys inside. Putting familiar objects inside will make the carrier more inviting. 5. Practice makes perfect. Go on mock trips to the vet. Even if you just drive around the block, the idea of these practice runs is to accustom your cat to being in a carrier and in a car. Always reward them with their favourite treats so they associate positive experiences with the car drive. 6. If these steps don’t help and your cat still becomes very stressed during their visit, ask your vet if a sedative (given prior to the visit) to calm your cat might be helpful for future visits. 7. Finally, if all else fails; consider having your vet come to you. Ask if your vet makes house calls or if they can refer you to someone who does. Many cats that become stressed at the vet’s surgery feel more confident at home and do much better on their home territory. Routine examinations are important because your vet can pick-up the early signs of disease, which is especially important in cats, since they are very good at hiding illness, and also discuss preventative care. By following these tips, visits to the vet will hopefully be less stressful and therefore it will be easier to take your cat to the vet regularly, so your feline companion lives a long and healthy life. If you have any questions or concerns, you should always visit or call your vet – they are your best resource to ensure the health and well-being of your pets.

Arun Veterinary Group - Diabetes in Cats and Dogs

Diabetes Mellitus is a reasonably common disease in cats and dogs just as it is in people, and here at Arun Veterinary Group we have diagnosed several new cases within the last few months. What is Diabetes? When a healthy animal eats, glucose from the food is absorbed into the bloodstream from the small intestines. This glucose is used by the animal to produce energy. A hormone called insulin, produced by the pancreas allows the glucose to leave the blood and enter the cells of the body where it is converted into energy. The main by-product of this process is carbon dioxide, which is exhaled. In a diabetic animal, the pancreas may not be producing enough insulin, or the cells may not be able to respond to the insulin, therefore the glucose is unable to leave the blood and enter the cells and the level of glucose in the blood continues to rise (hyperglycaemia), and eventually will become present in the urine as well. The animal's body will compensate for this by converting fat into energy instead of glucose. This is fine in the short term, but the main by-products of this process are called ketones which acidify the body causing a condition called ketoacidosis. This can be a serious and life-threatening emergency. Importantly, diabetes is a treatable condition and should not affect your pet's quality of life or

life-span. Some animals (cats in particular) will even go into remission once treatment has started. Once a diagnosis has been made, it is likely that the vet will start your pet on insulin therapy. There is no set dose of insulin - it is all dependant on the exact requirement of the individual animal (and this can change over time too). The vet will start your pet on a very small dose of insulin, and several blood glucose readings will be taken over the course of the day (a glucose curve) to see how your pet responds. Glucose curves are repeated until the vet has ascertained exactly how much insulin your pet needs. This can seem frustrating as it can take several attempts. Once the dose has been established, further glucose curves are not usually required unless any problems arise. Giving insulin at home can seem like a daunting prospect at first but our vets and nurses will be on hand every step of the way for help and advice. In time, most owners establish a routine that becomes second nature to them and their pet - indeed, we have even heard reports of pets 'reminding' owners when it's time for their injection! Could your pet be diabetic? The clinical symptoms of diabetes in cats and dogs are much the same as they are in people, and include increased hunger, thirst, urination, lethargy, weight loss and vomiting. Please contact the surgery if you notice any of these signs in your pet.

Located in East Street, this restaurant has been totally transformed and features artwork paying tribute to Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the major Romantic poets, who was born in Horsham. Each PizzaExpress restaurant is individually designed

– often using well known places, people or historical events from the area as the basis. The interior of the Horsham restaurant has a range of collage artworks inspired by Shelley’s poetry and his story. Leaders: Property market set for strong and steady growth in 2016

The new year looks set to mark the start of an extremely busy period for the property market, with both landlords and sellers having plenty of reasons for optimism. Local property specialist Leaders believes consistent growth, high demand and remarkably quick sales and lets will be features of the sector throughout 2016. Kathy Taylor, senior branch manager at Leaders in Horsham, says: “2015 was a year of exceptionally strong demand in the property market and, having got off to a very busy start in January, we expect

more of the same in 2016. “Tenant demand is sure to remain extremely high, with renting a home always a popular option among those who either cannot afford to buy or simply value the flexibility it offers. This will help landlords to achieve a good return on their property and encourage more investors to the market.” A spike in buy-to-let activity is also forecast for the early months of the new year, following confirmation of a three per cent stamp duty on investment properties in the government’s recent Autumn

Search 1,000s of mortgages...

Statement. Kathy explains: “The additional stamp duty will be charged from April 1st, so there is sure to be a rush in investors pushing through property purchases ahead of this date in order to avoid the levy. “Regardless of the stamp duty changes, we are confident the buyto-let market will remain strong and appealing in the long term, as investors know it still delivers a very attractive return in comparison with other types of investment. “We are already working with a number of investors looking to expand their property portfolios ahead of the stamp duty changes and we are delighted to offer a bespoke property selection and purchase service to other people aiming to do the same.” Kathy is similarly optimistic about the sales market’s prospects for the next 12 months. “The sales sector looks set to be

extremely busy in 2016, with pentup demand likely to transform into a rise in activity over the coming months. We believe a shortage of properties to buy during 2015 discouraged some people from moving last year, but many will use the new year as a chance to get their plans back on track,” she explains. “High demand will always push prices up, and right now demand is booming. I expect house prices to continue to rise over the coming months, albeit at a slower pace than they did last year. It means people who opt to sell in 2016 can expect to achieve a great price for their home.” The new year is the ideal time for anybody thinking of selling or letting a property to do so as it provides an invaluable opportunity to take advantage of a surge in demand. For advice on all matters relating to selling or letting, please contact your local Leaders branch or visit leaders.co.uk.

Course specialist Nick Holman still weighing in Horse racing

Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Southwater’s Nick Holman just loves horsing around, it’s in the blood. 62 year old Nick was brought up around horses so it was inevitable that his life would be spent around his favourite animal. Nick told the District Post: “My grandfather was a jockey and later bought and sold racehorses and my mother’s brother (Tony Grantham) rode for the Queen Mother on horses owned jointly by her and the Queen.” Nick attended Nuthurst Primary School and then the now defunct St John’s College just outside Horsham before, at age 16, riding as an amateur in a point to point race. From there he became an established National Hunt jockey, a contemporary of John Francombe, Josh Gifford and Steve Smith-Eccles. Nick rode at the Grand National meeting and in the Scottish and Welsh Nationals, fondly recalling his cherished memory of a double at Plumpton among 26 winners over fences. Sadly a wood working injury inflicted serious damage to Nick’s left hand and arm, terminating his burgeoning riding career.

The untimely death of his father brought about a change of direction when Nick took over as landlord of the Tabby Cat pub (now the Orchard restaurant) at West Grinstead. But after six years the lure of horses saw Nick appointed as Head Lad at John Jenkins’s yard. From there he became involved in racing security

Nick rode at the Grand National meeting and in the Scottish and Welsh Nationals, fondly recalling his cherished memory of a double at Plumpton among 26 winners over fences and for the last 17 years has been using his knowledge and experience as an Equine Welfare Integrity Officer (EWIO), mostly at southern tracks – both jumping and flat, like Ascot, Lingfield and Sandown - for the British Horse Racing Authority (formerly the Jockey Club). EWIOs are responsible for the se-

curity of the stable yard and monitoring horse welfare at race meetings. Their role is to identify all horses - by scanning, they are all now chipped - and people entering the stable yard. Horses are monitored as they arrive on course for any health or welfare issues. Vaccination records are checked and pre and post race samples are collected from horses selected by the stewards - sometimes triggered by unusual betting patterns - for analysis regarding prohibited substances. Horses are also checked post race for any signs that give concern as to their welfare and EWIOs gather information that may assist in the regulation and good governance of racing. Nick says: “I do 210 days a year often including Sundays and Bank Holidays but, apart from the travelling, driving around 25000 miles a year, it’s a great job for me and I love it!” Special assignments have included equestrian testing for the Olympics and Para Olympics, staying up at Greenwich for a month. Nick adds: “It is great being on duty at the big meetings – I’m really looking forward to going back to Cheltenham in March.” Cycling and running are hobbies for Nick Holman but horses are his passion and he still enjoys riding out on his cousin’s point to pointers.

Joggers off to a good start Nuthurst and Billingshurst promoted in the Fun Run League Netball Dave Smith – Sports Editor

Favourites St Andrew’s, Nuthurst and Billingshurst schools confirmed their promotions from Division B of the Horsham District Primary Schools Netball League with victories over Northolmes and Kingslea

respectively. Both can now plan to do battle in the tougher company of Division A. Nuthurst ended up as top team and completed a full house of victories in the division with a tight 6-4 win over a battling Northolmes team. Billingshurst’s efforts over the three meetings have been nearly as im-

pressive so lowly Kingslea will take some comfort from restricting them to only four goals in their last match. Leechpool also saved their best performance until last in going toe to toe with mid-table Heron Way in a battle that ended 2-2. Heron Way’s Joe Bensusan was their main man scoring both their goals.

Finally more Global exploits on the parkrun front saw Chris Yeomans completing the St Peter's parkun in Sydney, Australia, finishing the 5k route in 26.09.

Horsham’s Captain James Johnson is not surprised that Worcestershire have snapped up paceman Matt Henry. The Captain stated: “I played with him for Christchurch in New Zealand and he was head and shoulders above our team mates, so I recommended him to Horsham and he came to the club as our overseas player in 2011. His career has followed the best possible path and I’m very pleased for him.” At Horsham Matt took 40 wickets in Premier League and cup games, with a best of 5-15 against Chichester, one of his two five wicket hauls. He also scored 345 runs with a highest score of 99 not out – against Eastbourne. Horsham Vice President Kevin Bethell added: “Matt’s progress into county cricket is excellent news. He was always very pleasant and popular at Horsham and enjoyed playing at the club for the Thursday XI, too – I particularly remember his unbeaten 197 out of Horsham’s 239 total when he opened the batting against Sussex Martlets”

Horsham's Matt Henry has signed for Worcestershire Apart from his three tests, 20 ODIs and four T20s for New Zealand Henry was contracted for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and also played in the 2015 World Cup semifinal and final. He says: “I hope I can play my part in getting Worcester off to a good start in trying to regain that Division 1 spot – as well

as having another successful run in the NatWest T20 blast. Experiencing county cricket will be good for my all-round development as a player.” Worcester Coach Dusty Rhodes added: “Matt Henry is a fine young bowler and he’ll be a huge asset to the club, leading our attack.”

Lacklustre Horsham beaten in South London

Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter In a powerful competitive display Horsham battled through to a well deserved win, keeping a clean sheet against higher league Lewes, the former powerhouse of Sussex hockey. With player coach Dom Male still sidelined with a hand injury, Horsham were kept at bay in the goal-less first half despite earning five short corners, all negated by outstanding goalkeeping. Urged on by substantial vociferous supporters Lewes came out hard after the break, soon having a dangerous attack turned round the post. But Horsham went ahead after five minutes when a strong Freddie Campbell probe was deflected into the net by Rob Turnbull. In a fast and furious session Lewes were awarded their second short corner drawing an excellent save from Andy Isaacs, in a quality performance matching his opposite number. Sustained Horsham pressure resulted in two more short corners, both repelled, until another foray enabled Captain Duncan Howarth to slot home Horsham’s second goal. Lewes attacked to the end but were unable to penetrate Horsham’s determined defence. Duncan told the District Post: “This was very pleasing, especially as we’ve been unable to train and are still missing Dom Male – a great testament to our strength in depth.” Team Manager Al Campbell added: “We put two great goals past their excellent keeper – he was leaping

Horsham captain and scorer, Duncan Howarth like a salmon!” The win takes Horsham through to their first final in the 47 year history of the Sussex Cup - at East Grinstead on Sunday April 24 - against Eastbourne (currently languishing at the bottom of the same league). Tomorrow, Saturday 16 Horsham,

now fourth, two points behind Tulse Hill & Dulwich and Winchester and six adrift from leaders London Edwardians, return to league action with a home game against seventh in the table Woking. Horsham beat Woking 4-2 in the away fixture earlier in the season.

Strong comeback ensures Borough win Saturday January 9 – London 3 South East Pulborough 21- 13 Old Dunstonians

Rugby Martin Read – Sports Reporter After trailing at the break Pulborough fought back well against Old Dunstonians to pull off a strong win, avenging the away defeat against the same opposition last September. Borough Captain Simon Burfiend said: “Had we scored an earlier try it would have put them under pressure but I was not too worried when we were 13 nil down at half time because we’d have the benefit of the wind and the slope in the second half.” Borough certainly took full advantage of the conditions in the second session with tries from Ewan Calloway, George Steere and Dan Paige – all converted, the first by full back Frazer Oliphant-Hope and, after Frazer was forced off with an injury, by Tom Hoey. Frazer told the District Post: “This was a brilliant fight back, great for our morale. We should have a strong side out at Cranbrook

Try scorer George Steere (No. 20) ready for an attack from the line out and now just need an elusive away win to boost our confidence.” Coach Clayton Saunders told us: “A win is a win and of course I’m happy with that but it’s all about performance and if we can get that right throughout games then we’ll keep winning.” While Simon Burfiend added: “The way we were

attacking I knew we could win this one and in the end we richly deserved our victory.” Tomorrow (Saturday 16) Pulborough, now sixth, travel to ninth in the table Cranbrook who they beat 35-28 at home in October. With five wins from 12 starts, Cranbrook lost 33-12 at Eastbourne last week.

Saturday January 9 - London 2 South East Old Colfeians 21 – 18 Horsham Having got back to form with two good wins and climbed to third in the table Horsham’s inconsistency returned as they lost a hard fought encounter with Lee based Old Colfeians. In difficult, sticky conditions underfoot, neither side was able to display much fluency, and running rugby was at a premium. Horsham head coach Nick Stocker was frustrated that his side did not play to his expectations. He said: “If we play to our patterns and potential then I absolutely believe that no team in the league can live with us. I was disappointed with our intensity, the penalty count, our discipline and our lack of energy. We showed little glimpses of what we can offer when we started running directly sending Johnny up the middle but too often passes were not going to hand and we lacked the mental alertness to take those opportunities. There was a lack of appetite and focus.” With the wind at their backs, Jack Potter was the first to pounce on a loose ball and score a converted try. Horsham were under pressure conceding penalties and were fortunate when Old Colfeians missed a kick at goal to extend their lead. The Green and Whites then responded against the run of play when Matt McCabe chipped the ball over the defensive line for Mike Watts to hack on from the half-way line and touch down under the posts. The conversion from Will Bell levelled the scores at 7-7. Horsham continued to absorb pressure and Ollie Harcus was yellow carded as a result of the cumulative penalty count. After a long period camped on the Horsham try

line, Steve Howard crashed through to score for Old Colfeians. Horsham rallied and Johnny Ordidge was sent crashing up the middle to win the penalty for Bell to narrow the deficit at half–time to 14-10. Old Colfeians again started the second half better than Horsham and following a high tackle, Potter kicked for the corner and from the line-out impressive prop Chris O’Malley bustled over to score to take a commanding 21-10 lead. Horsham immediately bounced back with Will Johnson scoring a great try in the corner, his first upon his return to the club following a sojourn at Chippenham. The conversion was missed but the momentum was now with Horsham as the deficit was narrowed to 21-15. With Horsham camped on the Old Colfeians try line they lost a player to the sin bin from cumulative offences and when awarded a penalty, Bell slotted the kick off the inside of the upright to take the score to 21-18. With Old Colfeians playing out the final minutes with fourteen men, Horsham were applying all the pressure and Harcus made a powerful break to win a penalty. Captain Richard Tredgett asked Bell to go for goal but the kick went wide and Old Colfeians hung on for a 21-18 win. Stocker added: “Old Colfeians are a side that are used to playing this level of rugby having always been in this league or higher. In London 2 each team can beat each other but we just did not turn up. Too many individuals did not play to the level expected and my man of the match went to Richard Tredgett who was one of the few who did not let his standards slip. I expect to see a reaction at training and in next week’s game.” Horsham’s next fixture is at home on January 16 to fellow promoted side Dartfordians, who are presently one place higher in the league. Horsham Team: Bell; W Johnson, J Johnson, Ordidge, Watts, McCabe (Wilde), Mills; Talbot, GranthamHill, Brady (Fisher); R Tredgett (capt), Whiting; Harcus, Gray, M Tredgett (Gaynor).

Whitehawk too strong for gallant Horsham Football

Dave Smith - Sports Editor

Tuesday January 12 - Sussex Senior Cup – Round 3 Whitehawk 4 – 0 Horsham Horsham’s involvement in the Sussex Senior Cup came to an end against Whitehawk on Tuesday night who now take a step nearer retaining the cup they won last season. Whitehawk, who play their league football three divisions higher than the Hornets in the National League South, had a little too much class on the night although Horsham put in a tremendous effort and the final score line was a little flattering. Fresh from their recent exploits in the FA Cup where they came close to upsetting Football League 2 side Dagenham and Redbridge – taking them to a replay and then extra time in front of the TV cameras – Whitehawk dominated the early exchanges. David Martin and

Scott Nelson both had efforts that flew narrowly wide before on thirteen minutes the pressure told and the hosts took the lead. Ex Crawley Town star Sergio Torres tore through the Horsham midfield and found Sam Deering who hammered a long range shot into the net despite ‘keeper Gareth Williams getting a hand to it. Whitehawk continued to press with midfielder Torres pulling the strings but Horsham’s well drilled defence held firm. Horsham had a rare foray up-field leading to Darren Boswell firing just wide after some good neat passing between himself and Terry Dodd. Immediately after Horsham’s attack however Whitehawk doubled their lead when another forceful run ended up with the ball reaching Arnaud Mendy who fired past Williams for a 2-0 half time lead. Immediately from the restart Horsham nearly grabbed a goal back when Hawks defender Chris Sessegnon cleared Charlie Farmer’s header off the line. But, as in the first half, the glimmer of hope was quickly diminished by the hosts as three minutes after Farmers effort Whitehawk made it 3-0 when a ball

into the box from David Martin hit Ashley Jones and gave Williams no chance. Still Horsham battled and again were very unfortunate not to score; Joe Shelley’s long range effort hitting the bar with ‘keeper Craig Ross beaten. If the game was not already over as a contest then it certainly was in the seventieth minute when Jordan Rose smashed the ball past Williams from a couple of yards following an in-swinging corner. The home side comfortably played out the last twenty minutes dominating the possession apart from one late attempt from Kieron Pamment that was easily saved by Ross. The performance and experienced gained by the players and staff from this match will stand Horsham in good stead if they can achieve their much hoped for return to higher league football next season. A trip to Shoreham tomorrow (January 16) is next up for the Hornets in the quest for that promotion. Horsham Team: Williams, Duncan, Knee, Hunt, Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Archibald, Dodd, Pamment, Boswell. Subs: Keehan, Lewis, Atkinson, Burfiend, Charles.

Darren Boswell and Adam Hunt celebrate the first goal with scorer Terry Dodd

Horsham moved up to second in the table following this victory over a defensively set up Littlehampton Town team; the match being played out in a bad tempered and niggly fashion that saw two red cards and numerous yellows. Both red cards, shown to Hornets Terry Dodd and Town’s Peter Beadle, were a bit harsh and many of the seven yellow cards shown by referee Nick Blogg gave little consideration towards the awful playing conditions. The match from start to finish was hardly a football classic, the sodden pitch and second half downpour put paid to that, but it was another three hard fought points for Dom Di Paola’s Hornets who after this win sit a point behind leaders Lancing, but with three games in hand. The opening exchanges produced little of note and it wasn’t until the 20th minute that any form of excitement could be found and that came from a half hearted penalty appeal by Town following an alleged handball by Alex Duncan. However three minutes after the appeal was turned down Horsham went ahead. Prolific Hornets front man Terry Dodd took Darren Boswell’s pass

in his stride and despite the attention of two visiting defenders and ‘keeper Jon Hendrick’s best efforts he planted a low drive into the Town net. Amazingly, given the conditions and the niggly nature of both sets of players, the referee had managed to keep his cards in his pocket up to

The match from start to finish was hardly a football classic, the sodden pitch and second half downpour put paid to that, but it was another three hard fought points this point. However Town’s Ryan Bell soon became the first to be cautioned after a foul on Dodd that led to both players becoming involved in a skirmish. Visiting ‘keeper Jon Hendrick then kept his side in the match when he produced a wonder save to prevent Dodd notching up his second goal and to keep the score at 1-0 going in at the break. The second half started amid a torrential downpour that only made the pitch more difficult to play on. With fifty six minutes played the

ugly nature of the match came to a head when after a sliding tackle from Dodd on George Gaskin referee Nick Blogg, after consulting his assistants, showed the Hornets striker a straight red. Without the vociferous protests of the visiting players and officials the referee would have probably deemed it a yellow. The parity in numbers was re-established on eighty one minutes when Peter Beadle got his marching orders from referee Blogg after a late challenge on Alex Duncan. This time it was the Horsham players and officials turn to berate the referee, seemingly influencing the match official to turn what looked a caution into another straight red. Deep into added time - as all in the ground were waiting for the final whistle - a long up kick from ‘keeper Williams found Bradley Lewis who put a cross into the box that defender Josh Bates failed to deal with which allowed Kieron Pamment to score off the post from close range and seal the win. Not a classic match but three more points for the Hornets towards the season’s target of promotion back into the Ryman at the first attempt. Painter said “The poor weather we’ve had in recent weeks has resulted in a number of postponements and we will be playing twice a week from now until March so it was important that we could add more strength to the squad”. Horsham have also added to their options by re-signing former youth attacking midfielder Harry Smith.
