Youngsters put MP Jeremy Quin on the spot Students put Horsham MP Jeremy Quin on the spot thanks to the initiative of a first year pupil. After the searching question and answer session at Collyer’s college in Horsham vice principal Steve Nicholls said: “Massive thanks to Esme Cairns, in her first year as a Collyer’s student, for helping to organise the visit. It was certainly a privilege for us to welcome Jeremy Quin to our college. The students clearly enjoyed the session and asked intelligent questions. I’m sure that Jeremy’s visit will inspire them to continue to take an active interest in politics.” Student Hannah Haines said: “It was a great session, really enjoyable. I was particularly fascinated to hear Jeremy’s insight into the House of Commons and the structure of government. It was also interesting to hear about how laws are passed.” Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley said: “We are hugely grateful to Jeremy for giving up his time to speak to our government and politics students today. He dealt with searching questions about education funding and government policy in Syria as well as giving students an excellent overview of life as an MP.”

A charity needs unwanted Christmas gifts to help its work. Charities Aid Foundation research shows three out of five people received unwanted Christmas presents. And St Catherine’s Hospice, which has shops in Horsham and Billingshurst as well as other towns, would like people to consider bring-
ing along unwanted gifts so they can be sold. Each of their charity shops is calling out for donations of clothes, books, DVDs, toys, jewellery and bric-a –brac. To find out more about how you can help St Catherine's, by donating items or volunteering in their shops, please visit: www.stch.org.uk.
More people than ever in the Horsham area are having to live with diabetes. The number of people diagnosed with diabetes in Horsham and Mid Sussex is at a record level despite increasing despite publicity about the problem locally and nationally. Too much sugar-laden food and drink and a lack of exercise, leading to obesity, are among the factors often reported in the problem. There has been a 5.96% rise in three years in the area, according to the latest statistics from Diabetes UK. The number of people diagnosed with diabetes in Horsham and Mid Sussex has now reached a record high of 9,640. The new figures, extracted from GP patient data, show the growth in the number of people with diabetes in Horsham and Mid Sussex. In England the average is a 6 per cent increase in prevalence over the past three years. The news comes at the same time as the number of people living with
diabetes in the UK has tipped beyond the 4 million mark for the first time. This includes the 3.5 million adults who have been diagnosed, which is an increase of 119,965 compared to the previous year. There are also thought to be 549,000 people who have Type 2 diabetes but do not know this as they have not yet been diagnosed. As the number of people living with the condition continues to escalate, Diabetes UK is warning that the need for the NHS to commit to providing adequate care and diabetes education across the UK is more urgent than ever. It says that until this happen large numbers of people will end up experiencing potentially preventable diabetesrelated complications such as blindness, kidney failure and amputation. The charity says at the moment more than 24,000 people a year with diabetes die before their time. To find out more about diabetes education, visit www.diabetes.org. uk/taking-control

Young musician Myrddin hits high note Sewage fraud gang serving jail sentences A sewage fraud gang that struck at victims at Steyning, Upper Beeding and Crawley has been jailed. Crooks conned people into buying specialist sewage treatment equipment after convincing people they were to blame for sewage leaking on to the property of neighbours. The gang struck in 25 towns and villages from West and East Sussex to as far west as Devon. Their network of organised criminals netted £310,000, but was caught after an investigation by the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit. They have been sentenced to a combined total of more than 18 years in jail for fraud and money laundering. The fraud offences involved a total of 34 victims. Operation Knock investigated incidents between October 2013 and September 2014 where victims had been told that their neighbours' property had been flooded with raw sewage originating from under their property. The victims were told that they needed to hire specialist equipment to resolve the issue and to pay a deposit which would then be refunded. Lead investigator DC Matt Wilson said: "Friday's sentences reflect the nature of the offences this sophisticated network took part in by intentionally targeting the most vulnerable people."This should act as a deterrent to anyone else tempted to earn some extra money by turning a blind eye to these crimes, we will investigate and bring them before the court." At the sentencing hearing at Lewes Crown Court George Wickens Junior, aged 24, of Iveagh Crescent, Newhaven, was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment for one count of conspiracy to commit fraud and six years’ imprisonment for one count of conspiracy to launder the proceeds of crime, to run concurrently. George Wickens, aged 52, of Batts Bridge Road, Maresfield, was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment for one count of conspiracy to commit fraud.James Cavanagh, aged 25, of Parklands, Maresfield, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for one count of conspiracy to commit fraud and 30 months’ imprisonment for one count of conspiracy to launder the proceeds of crime, to run concurrently. He was also sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment for money laundering, to run consecutively. Daryl Hayley, aged 23, of Beeches Way, Faygate, received a six months’ suspended sentence and 80 hours unpaid labour for one count of conspiracy to launder the proceeds of crime. Paul Bryson, aged 24, of Old Farm Close, Haywards Heath, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for one count of conspiracy to launder the proceeds of crime. Alfie Robinson, aged 23, of Chanctonbury Road, Burgess Hill, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for one count of conspiracy to launder the proceeds of crime and six months’ imprisonment for breach of a suspended sentences, to run consecutively.
Martin Jones, aged 26, of Newbury Road, Crawley, was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment for one count of conspiracy to launder the proceeds of crime and six months’ imprisonment for breach of a suspended sentences, to run consecutively.
The gang struck in 25 towns and villages from West and East Sussex to as far west as Devon Lee Farrington, aged 22, of Churchill Road, Lewes, was sentenced to 14 months’ imprisonment for one count of conspiracy to launder the proceeds of crime and 14 months’ imprisonment for a second count of conspiracy to launder the proceeds of crime, to run concurrently. Martin Suckling, aged 52, of Churchill Road, Smallfield, near Horley, was sentenced to two years for each of the three counts of acquiring criminal property, to run concurrently. Angelia Wickens, aged 31, of Parklands, Maresfield, received a six months suspended sentence for one count of conspiracy to launder the proceeds of crime.
A promising young musician has won a top scholarship for his work. Myrddin Rees Davis, who left Christ’s Hospital, Horsham, last summer to read music at Oxford University, has been awarded the St Hilda’s Music Scholarship for 201516. Competition for this college’s highly prestigious award was strong but Myrddin’s consistently highstandard of music-making on the French Horn impressed the adjudicator. Andrew Cleary, Director of Music at Christ’s Hospital said: “We are proud to congratulate Myrddin on this fine achievement. “He is an outstanding musician who flourished at Christ’s Hospital. He has a natural flair and his contribution to music here was excellent, particularly in solo performance. He had achieved a Diploma on the tenor horn before starting his GCSEs and since then he has gained Grade eight French Horn with distinction. “He showed incredible commitment to a number of school music ensembles but was also committed to music out of school being a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and, since 2013, a member of the Guildhall Junior Department. “Myrddin’s musical journey will no doubt inspire other young musicians and we always believed he would be an asset to any department.” Myrddin has also just been accepted onto the Oxford Philharmonic's Young Artists Programme, so will perform a free short recital in The Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford on May 21 before their concert.

Planning appeals lead to council change Arrest made in Horsham Park rape investigation Detectives investigating the rape of a 21-year-old woman in Horsham in August have arrested a man. The 27-year-old Horsham man was questioned on suspicion of rape and released on bail until April 4. At 3.21am on August 8, a woman called police to report that she had been raped in Horsham Park.
Detective Inspector Paddy Mayers of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team said: "We are still appealing for witnesses to the rape and anyone who has any information to contact us." Email police on 101@sussex.pnn. police.uk or ring 101 quoting Operation Akela.
Burglar steals medication
Planning applications that might lead to expensive appeals are being taken out of the hands of traditional committees. Instead they will be debated by the full Horsham District Council after a change in the council’s constitution was approved. Traditionally for decades on councils a select group of councillors sitting on planning committees have decided bigger applications, including the Development Control committees of Horsham. But some Horsham district councillors expressed concern last year about the danger of the council having to foot big bills when the committee decisions were overturned on appeals, some of them involving lengthy and expensive hearings costing many thousands of pounds. In an attempt to head off any potential problems applications that are believed to be finely balanced will go in future before the full council.
A report on the change was before councillors at the Scrutiny and Overview Committee. The report said that the Scrutiny and Overview Committee had recommended to council a change to the council’s constitution so that, in the event of a Development Control Committee proposing a decision that would be likely to have “significant costs implications” for the Council, the decision could be referred for determination by full council. The recommendation had been triggered by discussions and concerns raised initially by members of the Finance and Performance Working Group and subsequently by the Business Improvement Working Group. The councillors were told both working groups were concerned that the council had incurred significant costs in recent years arising from decisions made by both Development Control Committees
that could not be justified on planning grounds. The report said the applicants in these cases had then been successful at appeal, including obtaining significant costs awards against the council. The change came after councillors resolved that Article 4 of the Constitution be revised by the insertion of a new paragraph stating: “To determine planning applications referred to it by the Director of Planning, Economic Development and Property if he is of the opinion that the relevant Development Control Committee is minded to make a decision in which there are likely to be significant cost implications.”
A thief stole a resident’s medication during a burglary. Police have appealed for public information about the break-in, which happened between 1am and 7.30am on January 13. The unknown suspect gained entry to a flat in Burnham Place, probably through a window.
As well as the medication the burglar took a quilt, a DVD player, a Samsung mobile phone and a set of keys. Sussex Police are appealing for anyone with information or who may have seen anyone suspicious in the area to e-mail101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or to call 101 quoting serial 258 of 13/01.

Maxwell Smith, four, has Police issue warning to “show off” shark named after him drivers after teenager’s car seized Police have issued a “zero-tolerance” warning after seizing a teenager’s car when he did deliberate wheel spins on a Horsham road. They have warned that they will not tolerate what they call “antisocial driving” after having to investigate other incidents.

Maxwell, the eponymous shark
Brave Maxwell Smith, four, now has a shark named after him after Sea Life officials heard of his exceptional courage in facing a tough start in life. Sea Life at Brighton introduced a brand new Zebra Shark to its Ocean Display and conducted an official naming ceremony in honour of fish fan Maxwell, who lives with the condition Mitochondrial Depletion. Maxwell was guest of honour at the naming ceremony with his family. Mitochondrial Depletion is an extremely rare and complex muscle wasting disease. Because of this Maxwell is fully ventilated 24 hours per day and is dependent on his wheelchair. His family, from Thakeham, West Sussex, says that despite this he is a very happy and brave young boy. Maxwell loves watching fish and his greatest wish was to visit the Sea Life Centre in Brighton, Children’s charities Merlin’s Magic Wand and Rays of Sunshine, who helped Maxwell, attended the ceremony, along with Sea Life Brighton General Manager Max Leviston. The aquarium’s skilled aquarist team transferred the newly named Zebra Shark from its current home in quarantine into the one million litre Ocean Display, where it will co-habit with other sharks, rays and turtles. A wooden plaque was also unveiled at the aquarium to commemorate Maxwell’s official naming of the Zebra Shark.
Officers were on patrol in an unmarked vehicle one evening when they saw the car wheel spinning in Albion Way, leaving a 30ft mark on the road in the process. The car involved was a Skoda driven by a 19-year-old man from Bognor Regis. The driver had already been issued a “section 59” notice from police warning about his driving on a previous occasion, and the car was consequently seized from him after the Albion Way incident. Police also reported him for alleged careless driving so he could face a court appearance. Sussex Police say its Road Policing Units are working closely with Horsham Neighbourhood Policing Team in response to complaints from the public relating to such behaviour in and around the town. A Sussex Police spokesman said: "This type of driving will not be tol-
erated and any offences will be dealt with accordingly. This does not only include offences committed on the roads, as a lot of road traffic legislation will also apply to public places such as supermarket car parks and other places open to the public. "This type of driving can be dangerous and raises the probability of the driver losing control of the vehicle and causing a serious collision. In addition, it can cause unknown damage to the structure of the vehicle, including the tyres, which can then
render the vehicle to be in a dangerous condition. "It is also known that some drivers are modifying their cars to enable them to perform manoeuvres such as drifting and some of these modifications can be illegal for vehicles used on the road. It should be clarified that if any changes are made to a vehicle, the driver must ensure they comply with legislation and notify their insurance company of the changes, as failure to do so can render their insurance policy void.”

The cast will be performing Robin Hood and the Holey Quail at Holy Trinity Church Hall, Rushams Road at 7.30pm on January 29 and at 2.30pm and 7.30pm on January 30. Proceeds will be split evenly between the "SureStart" charity and Holy Trinity Church funds. Tickets are £6 for adults and £3 for children, available from 01403 268035. Leader Jane O'Sullivan said, "Lynn Andrews and I have been putting on Trinity Church Players pantomimes for 23 years and the group goes from strength to strength. “Numerous people have been involved over the years, all contributing in whatever way they can. As well as a large cast, we're lucky to have teams of writers who can tailor the pantos to our specific
needs. “Some of our younger members are a huge help getting into the loft to find costumes; other members use their technology skills to put together the programme and sound effects; others take the photographs. “On the weekend before the panto, we all work together to build the stage and paint scenery from scratch. We have lots of laughs whilst entertaining our local community and raising good sums for the church and charities.” Pictured is the panto’s cast.

Fire walkers are sought to help raise money for a family charity. Home-Start is offering the opportunity to take part in a ‘Fire Walk’ at its fundraising at Horsham Rugby Club on March 11. The walk is one of the new challenge activities that the charity is organising in 2016, as itasks local people to get involved and show support for vulnerable young children and their families. Home-Start manager Liz Roe said: “It’s a great chance to do something completely different and unforgettable. “I’m taking on the challenge myself and we’re inviting other brave and daring people to join me. It will be a fun evening for friends and family too, who can come along to give the walkers encouragement and en-
joy the food, drink and other activities.” Last year Home-Start helped 355 local children, with their team of trained volunteers offering unique support in the family home. Liz said: “We are passionate about our work and want to make sure we can continue helping local families in the future. The Big Lottery Fund has given us great financial support over the last two years, but more is needed for us to meet demand for our service, so backing from our local community is also vital for us. And we want to offer as many different ways as we can for people to support us”. Horsham Rotary continues to Make New laws used to help combat domestic violence a Difference in our community The Oaktree Farm Day Centre recently received some help from The Rotary Club of Horsham’s Making a Difference scheme. Oaktree Farm is situated in Copsale and is a centre for young adults with learning difficulties. The aim of the centre is to assist the young people attending to lead an independent and fulfilling life while allowing them to be involved in the decision making at the centre. When the centre had funding problems in purchasing two wheelchairs some of the staff decided to ask Horsham Rotary if they could help. Horsham Rotary has run a scheme called Making a Difference for the past five years. The scheme gives local individuals, families or organisations the opportunity to apply for financial help in cases where there are no other sources of funding or the funding available leaves a shortfall. In the case of Oaktree Farm staff member Kaz Barnett applied for the financing of the two wheelchairs and Horsham Rotary were pleased to help. The wheelchairs will be used to take those with limited mobility on wheelchair walks in the country allowing some of the young people to experience views of nature and their surroundings that they would otherwise not have been able to enjoy. Horsham Rotaty member, Rever-
Oaktree Farm’s Amanda Churcher and Kaz Barnett with Horsham Rotary’s John Du Bois and four of the centre’s young people end John Du Bois, attended the centre to present the two wheelchairs to the centre director, Amanda Churcher and the instigator of the request for help, Kaz Barnett. Applications for help from Hor-
sham Rotary Club’s Making a Difference scheme can be made by clicking on the ‘Contact us for Making a Difference applications’ on the front page of the club website www. horshamrotary.org.uk.
Lose Pounds, save £’s
Front line officers are ready to use new domestic violence laws, says Sussex Police. Training had started before the new laws were brought in from December 29, when the Home Office announced that the new domestic abuse offence of Controlling or Coercive Behaviour took effect. Detective Chief Inspector Ali Eaton of the Sussex Police Public Protection Branch said: "Sussex Police and our domestic abuse partners welcome this new legislation. It closes a gap in the law around patterns of controlling or coercive behaviour. The new law is powerful and will send a strong message to perpetrators as it is arrestable and can carry a sentence up to five years' imprisonment. "Domestic abuse in a relationship can take many forms and while most people can see the results of physical violence, there can also be mental, emotional and exploitive behaviour, depriving victims of their independence by regulating their everyday behaviour. "It is insidious and manipulative and designed to destroy a victim's confidence. Quite often taking place behind closed doors, the emotional abuse may be invisible, but the damage to victims is significant. This new legislation will allow the authorities to tackle this crime and arrest abusers. "We have already invested in the
training of our frontline officers to ensure they understand the new legislation and to highlight the damage controlling and coercive behavior can inflict upon a victim. The report by HM Inspector of Constabulary on 15 December recognises the hard work that is put in by Sussex Police and our partners to tackle vulnerability including domestic abuse in all its forms.
The new law is powerful and will send a strong message [...] as it is arrestable and can carry a sentence of up to five years "Our Operation Ribbon campaign is currently ensuring dedicated police patrols are available over the Christmas and New Year period to respond to calls about domestic abuse, but our efforts are unceasing all through the year and officers will be ready to use this new law whenever the circumstances justify it." For advice and support in Sussex visit www.sussex.police.uk or call 101.

Village welcomes faster broadband Going the extra mile Nearly half of the residents in a village have taken up faster broadband after a scheme to improve the connection speeds. In all 55,000 more West Sussex homes and businesses have access to faster broadband because of a multi million pound partnership. The village of Wisborough Green is enjoying the benefits of highspeed fibre broadband with nearly half of all homes and businesses taking up new services. One local business owner has hailed the “amazing” faster internet speeds. Alan Self, of Wisborough Green Stores, said: “I was one of the first to be connected and I get an amazing download speed of 70Mbps. My tills are connected to the internet, I order my stock online and I’m also looking into taking orders from customers online as well. “There are also no more family arguments about who is going to use the internet anymore, as everyone can get online at the same time. Fibre broadband has rapidly become one of our five a day for us.” Better, faster broadband became available to the village through the Better Connected West Sussex Broadband partnership between West Sussex County Council, BT and the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK initiative. Nearly half of the villagers have already taken
up the faster broadband service. Across the county, the multi million pound Better Connected broadband partnership has already made high-speed fibre broadband available to more than 55,000 homes and businesses in West Sussex.
David Barling, cabinet member for Residents’ Services at West Sussex County Council, said: “The aim of the Better Connected project has always been to bring better, faster broadband to West Sussex and it is fantastic to see the Wisborough Green businesses and community continuing to benefit.” Stacey King, BT’s regional part-
nership director for the South East, said: “We’re delighted that highspeed broadband has been a success for Wisborough Green. Faster broadband has proved that it helps local businesses grow, attracting investment and boosting the local economy. Fibre broadband is also an integral part of everyday life as people interact more frequently with the internet for transactions, social engagement and education.” The Better Connected project builds on BT’s on-going commercial fibre deployment across the county, which has already given more than 300,000 homes and businesses access to the highspeed fibre technology. West Sussex Council is investing £6.26m in the project, BT £7.6m and the government’s Broadband Delivery UK programme £6.76m. The new fibre-based network is open to all broadband providers on an equal wholesale basis, so local households and businesses can benefit from competitive products and pricing from a wide range of broadband providers. The technology will boost the competitiveness of local businesses, helping them to find new customers and operate more efficiently, whilst opening up a host of new learning, entertainment and development opportunities for households.

From little ones with their mums and dads, to runners up against the clock, there’s something for everyone, on this special day.” The national Sport Relief campaign will take place from March 18-20. Fire alarms save lives Explore West Sussex’s green gems Residents are being reminded to test alarms that could save their lives. A new national smoke alarmtesting campaign has been launched, which fire-fighters hope will change the way we feel about what they call the ‘unsung heroes’ in our home and help save lives. Statistics show people are four times more likely to die in a house fire when there is no working smoke detector. While most homes now have a smoke detector, many people do not carry out a regular test to ensure they are working. Recent research into people’s attitudes towards their smoke alarms revealed that many people do not like their detectors because they sometimes go off when the toaster is being used, or beep in the middle of the night when the battery is low. In fact, the research revealed that the proven life-savers are less popular than TV journalist Piers Morgan. The new national campaign aims to change people’s relationship with their smoke detectors by encouraging them to see them as unsung heroes in their home and pay them more attention by giving them a regular test. Jackie Boyle, Community Fire Safety Manager for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We know that smoke detectors are life-savers, but there is a temptation to fit them and then
forget about them. We are asking people not to ignore their detectors and get in the habit of testing them regularly. A test only takes a few seconds and gives you the peace of mind of knowing that you are protected. "Please don't forget about those members of your family or neighbours who may need a little help testing their smoke alarms. We offer free Home Safety Visits where we give advice and, where appropriate, fit smoke detectors or other specialist fire detection equipment. We give priority to those who are elderly or more vulnerable." West Sussex Fire Rescue Service advises: • Make sure you have smoke alarms on every level of your home. • Check your smoke alarms work by pressing their ‘test’ buttons once a month. • Change the batteries once a year if your smoke alarms have removable batteries. • After 10 years it's best to get a whole new alarm. • Clean the casing around your smoke alarms twice a year to ensure dust isn't blocking the sensors. • Make sure everyone in your home knows what to do in a fire and knows the escape route. Would you or someone you know benefit from a Home Safety Visit? Call on 0845 872 9719 or visit www. westsussex.gov.uk/fireto find if you are eligible.

Is there a bohemian rebellion going on in Horsham? Perhaps I am wrong and I have no doubt there are many who will contradict me, but I have seen a certain amount of Christmas decorations remaining in situ long after twelfth night! (I can hear the chattering classes coughing into their morning cups of espresso as I write. It is simply not done to go against tradition in leafy conservative Horsham! Certainly not when Easter eggs are now on display! Think of the confused children. etc. etc.) We, as a modern 21st century society should celebrate the creative challenge and be bolder with our gardens. What we do in our spaces
to brighten an otherwise dull couple of months is a great example of human individuality. Well done to all concerned be it intentional or not. Whilst on the subject of inspiration, Horsham is awash with artists. How about colourful murals on the blank gable ends to truly upset the staid traditionalists? As we are now firmly in 2016, (the 'old new year' now having passed us by with a good drunken wassail), I suggest you sneak out and explore West Sussex's quietly unsung green gems. This time of year is oft ignored by the garden glitterati, but I know you are made of sterner stuff. In Barns Green for example there is a wonderful arboretum hidden in plain sight. Named 'Julia and Emma's Arboretum', it is situated just above the football field. Locals no doubt already know of this wonderful space, so it is only fair to share the knowledge of it here. It is free to enter and even
in the depths of winter, holds interest for the ardent plantsman. I must admit, I don't know the history of the plot, but recommend you visit. Another small plot to see is the Diamond Jubilee Gardens in Loxwood. As I say it isn't a big space but offers a welcome difference of style for the aficionado. For those of you who want a little more than a quick stop, I would recommend buying an ordnance survey map of either Worthing or Chichester, plotting a course and visiting, on foot, as many small parks as possible in one day. I recommend going on foot precisely because you will have the time to meander and explore, so see things that those in cars rarely get to notice. Both urbs offer a variety of green spaces - many of which are commonly overlooked and are delightful in their own individual way. My tips? Try and find the Warrior Birds Memorial and the Yarn Bombing garden, both in Worthing.

It’s a new year - time for a new plan?
This month, our business expert and author Janette Whitney gives her six simple steps to help make 2016 a prosperous year for you Janette Whitney

As the business and personal bills left from the festive season and Christmas shutdown come in, some people face the New year with uncertainity, so taking positive action to redress the balance will make 2014 wealthier and happier. Here are a few ideas to help get your business off to a flying start this year. Face up to your debt problems Contact the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) if you are worried about your debt. Their advice is both free and confidential unlike debt management companies that charge a fee for their services. www.citizensadvice.org.uk Beware of Pay day Loans (as advertised on TV and the internet) as short term loans can cause long term problems. They may get you through to pay day for the first month, but what happens the next month? You are likely to still have the same ‘money
gap’ plus you have to find the interest on the loan. So you have to take out another loan – and so the cycle goes on. The County Council’s Trading Standards are warning consumers to think carefully before taking out a ‘payday’ loan http://www.westsussex.gov.uk/living/consumer_advice/ consumer_support_and_communit/ short_term_pay_day_loans.aspx Get New Customers! Sometimes we can spend too much time looking after our existing customers that we forget that a percentage of customers will always drop off and before you know it your customer numbers and sales are down. Never forget there is a new batch of clients out there who need your products and services. All you have to do is ask for their business! So gear yourself up for a renewed campaign. Look at your Expenses This is set to be a challenging year for businesses so a keen eye on your outgoings could help you. When did you last review your monthly expenses? Check out each expense – can you get a better deal from an alternative supplier? Don’t forget to look at your Bank Charges too. Keep your Eye on the Cash
This year resolve to watch your cash flow. With a continuing tightening of available credit in the market you may find your larger customers squeezing you on payment dates. Make sure you get your invoices out on time and that overdue payments are promptly chased. If you are facing a liquidity crisis make sure you are making full use of credit terms offered by your suppliers. Have a Radical re-think Are you hanging onto something in your business in the hope it will improve this year? It usually doesn’t! Do you have suppliers who are constantly delivering late or have quality problems? Search for new suppliers. Are your staff pulling together, or are changes needed? Do you have slow-moving products which you are sure will take off this year (for the 3rd year running)? Commit to a Plan Whatever actions you have decided to take write them down to give you focus and something to aim for. Remember to review your action plan every month. Pete Orr has been thrilling audiences, throughout the U.K. and Europe, for the past three decades, mashing up classic riff based rock anthems with the energy and style evocative of their time. His jaw drop-
ping solos and epic vocal styling’s have wowed all those lucky enough to have seen this true virtuoso inject new life into the classics. John Tonks is a leading U.K. session drummer. His superlative touring and recording credits include: Duran Duran, Fish, Thunder, The Streets, Steve Winwood, Lulu, Chris Difford, Paul Young, Thea Gilmore and Tricky. When John is not available he is covered by Pete Turtle or Tony Kiley. Both are superlative drummers,

Moving from blues to jazz Andy was influenced by players, such as Jaco Pastorius, and this love of jazz led him to study at the Royal Academy of Music, graduating in 1997. His stunning bass technique and sublime groove is making him the first call for visiting U.S. artists,
such as the late Ben E. King, Rodriguez, The Emotions and Leon Ware. He has also featured on recording sessions with Micheal Kamen, Sir George Martin and Alfie Boe. When touring commitments prevent Andy being available Steven Oates or John Currie take over bass duties. Both are amazing players who have played with Big Boy Bloater, The Drifters, plus many more. Matt’s journey from Horsham Capitol to the showbiz capital of the world Horsham-educated script writer Matt Charman is off to the Oscars next month after being nominated for an award. Last year Matt raised nearly £1,000 for Horsham Museum with a question and answer session after a showing of Bridge of Spies, for which he wrote the film script, at the town’s Capitol. The cold war thriller, starring Tom Hanks and directed by Steven Spielberg, has six Oscar nominations and, and among them is one for best original screen play. Bridge of Spies was Matt’s first screenplay and has proved a huge hit with critics and the public. Matt was brought up at Dragons Green, near Billingshurst, and attended Forest School, Horsham. His first efforts at writing plays
were performed at the Capitol. Matt’s father’s side of the family made their home nearly 200 years ago at Great House Farm Southwater, where Matt attended the local school. When younger he wrote a musical called Falling for Eve that was performed in Horsham and proved to be an important step in his rise to become a top screenwriter. Matt said of the nominations: “I checked on the Oscars web site and saw a live screening of the nominations. It got to the best screenplay category and they announced Bridge of Spies and then my name and I just thought ‘Wow. We
are going to the Oscars.’ It’s very exciting.” Matt, now based in London, is up against Ex Machina, Inside Out, Spotlight, and Straight Outa Compton for the best original screenplay award.

FIRST LADIES OF SONG Friday 5 February 7.30pm
Dublin Legends, formerly of The Dubliners, are coming to The Capitol on February 12 at 7.30pm. In 2012, The Dubliners celebrated 50 years on the road, but following the sudden death of founding member, Barney McKenna, and John Sheahan's decision to retire, it was
agreed that The Dubliners, as a touring band, would come to an end and the DUBLIN LEGENDS were born. Sean Cannon, Eamonn Campbell, Paul Watchorn & Gerry O’Connor, have over 60 years of performing with The Dubliners between them and will play all the classic songs and ballads
known the world over; Whiskey in The Jar, Dirty Old Town, The Wild Rover, Seven Drunken Nights, The Rare Auld Times, Molly Malone, The Irish Rover, Black Velvet Band & many more. To see Dublin Legends, Irish Folk Music at its very best, contact The Capitol Box Office.

A variety of food will also be on sale, including vegetarian, vegan options and soft drinks. This year, all the beer will be cooled throughout the festival. This means that it should be in the same excellent condition on the Saturday evening as it is when we open on Thursday.
Opening times and prices:Thursday 5.00pm - 11.00pm £9 Friday 11.00am – 3.00pm £5 5.00pm - 11.00pm £9 Saturday 12.00 – 8.00pm* £8 3.30pm – 8.00pm* £3 ** (**on door only & with NUS card) *or until the beer runs out If you are lucky enough to look under 25 years old, please bring photo ID and note that you must be over 18 to gain admission. A minimum of 150 tickets for each session will be available on the door, 20 minutes after the start of each session. So those who buy their tickets in advance will enter the venue first. The ticket price includes a souvenir glass and programme. Card-carrying CAMRA members can also obtain beer tokens worth £2 at the CAMRA membership stand. If you join CAMRA on the day, you will also receive £2 beer tokens and a copy of the Good Beer
Guide. Please bear in mind that the popular beers sell very quickly, and, as it takes at least 48 hours for beers to settle, cannot be replaced. Advance tickets will be available from Monday 11 January to Friday 11 March from the following outlets: Evening Star, Brighton; Gardener’s Arms, Lewes; Duke of Wellington, Shoreham-by-Sea; Selden Arms, Worthing; and Beer Essentials, Horsham. All bars will operate a token system. Token refunds will be given for whole £’s only and before ‘time’ is called at the bar. Surplus tokens may be deposited in the charity box and will be passed on to our Festival Charity SERV Sussex (Service by Emergency Rider Volunteers). The venue is fully wheelchair accessible. Jenna Instagrams her way to success with help from Slimming World
M
um of three Jenna Ayling has gone from shying away from the cameras to using them as part of her slimming success. Jenna shares pictures of her meals on the social networking site Instagram to help inspire others who are also losing weight and, in turn, has used other people’s meal ideas to help her lose just over five stone. She stated: "I have struggled with my weight from a young age and always felt the odd one out next to my friends and sisters on nights out and used to avoid the cameras for their selfie moments I would be the one behind the camera snapping moments of our time out. I was happy to be the one with the camera as I was miserable in the plus size clothes I'd squeezed in too. The last straw for me was a picture my mum showed me from a night out with my husband. I thought I looked amazing until that moment and knew I had to do something." Jenna joined the Slimming
World group in Henfield in June 2015 and received a warm welcome when she first walked through the door. This was just the first part of her life changing journey - the groups support and encouragement has meant they are all like family and Jenna has become a big part of that. “Along with my new group friends, I also decided to use Instagram to share the meals I was enjoying and have found many like minded people to follow. It is a great community and another added bonus to my success." Jenna has used her Instagram page (@slimmingworld_jenna89) to let everyone know she has now become a Slimming World Consultant and relaunched the Henfield group on December 29 2015 to help others achieve their slimmer dreams. The group meets every Tuesday at 9:30, 5:30 & 7:30 at The Church Hall, Tanyard, off Church Lane, Henfield. Come and join Jenna or call 07894306481 or you can find her on Facebook by searching for Slimming World Henfield.

Transforming a cattle holding into a stylish Tuscan courtyard garden 2016 has started with a bang! We have some really exciting landscape design and build projects lined up over the next few months. These include a roof top garden situated eight stories up in a modern London apartment building – so lots to keep us busy!
Panorama of existing courtyard One of the design and builds I’m particularly excited about is a converted farm in Sussex. The owners want to transform their outdoor car park, which used to be a cattle holding, into a Tuscan style courtyard. This will be no mean feat, but we’re eager to take on the challenge.
Vista that will mirror the steps and path
The courtyard space is 20m x 30m. At the moment, it’s a totally blank canvas - a flat gravel area with man-made concrete cattle troughs around the side. As with any design, before our build begins we want to make sure our client is 100 per cent happy with their garden design. To make it easier for them to envisage what the final garden will look like, Mike Walker, our Landscape Architect, created accurately scaled 3D rendered images of the garden.
Existing water troughs
If you would like to talk to the Landscape Design team or me about a new garden design, now is the perfect time! Contact design@jackdunckley.com to arrange a free consultation.
The garden will be on two different levels. From outside the converted barn, where our clients live, they will be able to walk up stone steps onto a path made of Breedon gravel and up to a sunken water feature with a brick parquet surround. Surrounding the path will be a rich green lawn and lush, colourful Mediterranean plantings.
Agapanthus
The first step will be to completely clear the space and then start with the hard landscaping; this includes knocking down any walls not needed and creating the path. We will be lowering the front area of the garden by 200mm, so drains and manholes at that level will also need to be dropped. There will need to be drainage on the patio, which will be put in before this is laid. We will be using ACO drains and the pipework will be installed afterwards. To give the garden a real Tuscan feel, we will be planting a line of large Cupressus Sempervirens trees, a species of cypress native to the eastern Mediterranean region, along the back border of the garden along with a rockery style border of large Horsham stone. Large 4ft Yew hedges will be planted at the very end of the garden. This will enclose the space and make it feel more private. The plantings will then go in last, just before the lawn. We will be planting agapanthus, Tuscan olives and more. 3d Artwork of the Storrington project

Connells Estate Agency raises nearly £3,000 for the NSPCC
National estate agency Connells is delighted to have raised £2,670 for its chosen charity, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). The amount makes up the company’s yearly donation to the NSPCC, which is raised at the annual Connells Partner’s Ball by senior members of staff. Connells Estate Agency Chief Executive David Plumtree recently presented the NSPCC with a cheque for the donation at Connells’ head office in Leighton Buzzard: “We are proud to have raised this impressive amount and to yet again support such an important cause. Year after year we continue to support the NSPCC, whose work is so important to the lives of many children around the UK and we are delighted to be able to contribute to the cause in this way.” The NSPCC is the UK’s leading charity specialising in child protection and the prevention of cruelty to children. The charity runs a range of locally based services for children and families; campaigns to help change and improve the lives of children; runs a helpline for adults to call if they are concerned
about a child; and provides ChildLine, the UK’s free, confidential 24-hour helpline and online service for children and young people to call if they need help or advice.
The amount makes up the company’s yearly donation to the NSPCC, which is raised at the annual Connell’s Partner’s Ball Jacqui Venters, Community Fundraising Manager at the NSPCC says: “We are very grateful to Connells for their wonderful support. The NSPCC is here to help prevent abuse and neglect and donations like this help to make that possible. On behalf of the charity and all of the children that will be helped I want to say a huge thank you to all of Connells’ employees and clients.”

Set4Success awards available for local sporting talent Junior Sport Are you the best in your field? Do you have the ambition to get to the next level? Do you live or go to school or college in the Horsham District? Set4Success supports young talented sportspeople from the Horsham District to achieve their potential. The costs involved in training and competing at a high level are often a deterrent to the fulfilment of ambition and capability. As a result an individual may lose interest and the nation a potential champion. S4S was set up in 2011 as a charitable partnership between The Rotary Club of Horsham, Horsham District Council, Horsham District Schools and local businesses including Ringway Ltd, Spofforths, AToM, Wakefields Jewellers and Tree Top Design & Print. Young people can apply for an award which will provide some limited funding, give concessionary access for a year to local sports facilities across the District (provided by
Places for People Leisure) and create public awareness of the achievements of the winners. Over 100 Awards have been made in the last 5 years covering around 30 sports with Past Set4Success winners including up and coming stars such as Lucy Wood (winner of Silver Medal in 2014 Commonwealth Games playing for England Hockey) Marco Penge (under-18 European top ranked golfer), and Charlie Piper (Harlequins rugby player) . Anyone who participates in either an individual or a team sport, can demonstrate past excellence at their age and level and are considered to have the long term potential to succeed at national or international level can apply for a Set4Success Award by visiting www.set4success. org and completing the application form. The closing date for the Spring 2016 Award Panel is the end of January. Further information is available from John Le Rossignol at Horsham Rotary Club on 01403 754005 or at horshamrotary@btconnect.com

To play, or not to play – Joggers complete testing challenges that is the question Athletics Philip Liberman – Horsham Joggers
Sometimes a match postponement is obvious, other times less so
sport
Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Postponement of matches can cause havoc with fixture lists having to be hastily renegotiated. Last weekend both Horsham hockey and Pulborough rugby were victims of the weather. And, sometimes decisions to call off games can be contentious – as Horsham Rugby Club discovered when, in a previous season, their game at Folkestone was postponed during Horsham’s journey, because of unfit conditions. On arrival at the ground Horsham saw matches on neighbouring pitches in progress, raising speculation as to alternative reasons for the postponement. Last season Horsham Men’s hockey team travelled to Marlow to be greeted by a clearly unplayable pitch and no sign of the opposition. In such instances leagues can impose
penalties – financial and otherwise. To prevent wasted journeys when clubs have to travel long distances to away games, early decisions have to be made by home club officials if the match referees or umpires are far away. This is not ideal, especially when conditions subsequently improve; rendering pitches playable by the scheduled start time. League hockey is played on “all weather pitches” – a misnomer because these can flood or be made dangerous by freezing. Cricket seasons are crowded with league and cup fixtures and rearrangement of league matches is impractical, each side being awarded 10 points when games are abandoned – rough justice, especially at the business end of the season when points are at a premium. As emphasised in recent local football postponements, trying to be consistent and fair to all parties in adverse weather conditions, including teams not involved in postponed matches but affected when in contention for promotion or relegation, can be a thankless task.
As the weather turned colder Horsham Joggers were not deterred and went to some extraordinary places to run! After many parkrun performances on Saturday in the cold and ice, including a double first finish at Horsham parkrun (1st Male Neil Boniface 16.25 & 1st Female Carol Anne Davies-Jones 21.56) Sunday saw a 10 mile race at Denbies vineyard in Dorking. On a hilly course and with snow on the ground there were some great performances Gavin Aslin was first Jogger home in 1.26.58 followed by Holly Wanless 1.39.37 Amanda Sullivan 1.56.03 Helen Woods 1.56.03 Caroline Bransden 2.02.50 Elizabeth Scott 2.02.58 Amanda Avery 2.12.22 Fiona Lear 2.12.31 Stephanie Charman 2.13.09 Lorraine Hunter 2.13.09 Deborah Weller 2.22.28 Paul Chandler 2.22.28. In addition Claire Bur-
Graham Clarke rows claimed a half marathon best of 2.33.22 at the Four Villages half in Lancashire. The craziest challenge of the weekend went to Paul Burgess and Graham Clarke as they tackled Fan Dance: Ex-
Paul Burgess ercise High Moon, a fully way marked challenge across the Brecon Beacons at night following SAS selection routes. With heavy snow fall and sub zero temperatures they both completed the challenge intact.
Young talent at Horsham Cricket Club Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham Cricket Club has some excellent young emerging talent and 15 year old Forest schoolboy Sam Bushby is an outstanding example. In the 2015 season Sam captained Horsham’s U15s and also played for the U16s, the club 2nd, 3rd and 4th elevens, the Thursday side and made his debut for the first team. He also plays football for Roffey Robins, but cricket is Sam’s bag – for Horsham teams last season he took 65 wickets, mostly against adults, including two against the MCC on President’s Day. And, just for good measure he got 62 not out – his first 50 – against RAM and is a good fielder, too. Sam’s father Mick told the District Post: “He’s been bowling leg
breaks since he was a five year old and the end of the season came too soon for Sam. He really enjoys his cricket and helping ‘the little legs’ (the 4-7 year olds) at Horsham Cricket Club with their induction programme. Apart from his wickets for the club he took two 5-fors and a 6-for, including a hat trick, at school and Forest won the District Cup.” Sam told us: “Bowling spin started by accident – as a laugh because
I couldn’t bowl pace!” Sam clearly possesses prodigious talent, so what does the future hold in store? “Next year my target is 70 wickets and more runs and I hope to play regularly for the thirds and occasionally the twos.” Longer term Sam’s ambition is to be a fully-fledged member of Horsham’s first team – and to work towards some sort of sport-related job. Watch this space! The future looks bright for all-rounder Sam Bushby

Dartfordians pip Horsham in another close encounter rugby
Richard Ordidge - HRUFC
Saturday January 16 - London 2 South East Horsham 8 – 12 Dartfordians Horsham remain fourth after losing another epic encounter with fellow promoted side Dartfordians, who stay third. The spoils have been evenly shared over the last couple of seasons and the result remained in doubt until the final whistle. Horsham coach Nick Stocker felt the marginal calls did not go his team’s way: “I am disappointed to have lost. We have had some good games with Dartfordians over recent years settled by a single score and today was no different. It was a close match decided by fine margins I feel aggrieved by a couple of the decisions and you just hope that in a game of such fine margins that they do not influence the result which today perhaps they did.” Dartfordians had the better of the early exchanges. Centre Connor Sutherland made a good break off an inside pass and it required a double tackle from Will Bell and Will Johnson to send the opposition winger into touch. Horsham came back and after good phase play resulted in the award of a penalty Bell kicked the Green and Whites into a 3-0 lead after 11 minutes from in front of the posts. Bell ran a great line to open up the Dartfordians defence, which was carried on by Johnson, and Dartfordians lost flanker Si Briggs to the sin bin for entering the break-

down at the side and prevent the try scoring opportunity. Despite being a man short Dartfordians upped their game and Number 8 Sam Allen made a great break but a try saving tackle from Johnson forced him to make a forward pass to the supporting Liam Brencher when a try looked certain. Dartfordians remained in the ascendancy and after going through several phases flanker Alfie Collins forced himself over the line from close range. Again what looked a simple kick was missed and Dartfordians led 5-3. The Green and Whites responded with waves of attacks. Following some direct running and good phase play, Mike Watts after a typical weaving run was stopped just short of the line but in the next movement captain Paul Talbot stormed over the line.
Johnson for Horsham was stupidly yellow carded for throwing the ball in a puddle and Dartfordians took advantage with strong runs from Brencher and Jake Taylor who was tackled into touch just short of the try line and Horsham went into the break with a narrow 8-5 lead. After the restart Horsham showed some good passages of back play with fluent handling but were rebuffed by some strong defence. Dartfordians centre Tom Tuley was then yellow carded for a spear tackle on Bell but the visitors made light of being a man down and with Allen to the fore, took the game to Horsham. Then on 70 minutes, with the half having been scoreless so far, Dartfordians conjured up a moment of brilliance. Mike Briggs drifted right and then made a lovely inside pass into the gap he had created for

blind side wing Brencher to storm through untouched to score from 25 yards under the posts. Briggs converted the try for Dartfordians to take a 12-8 lead. Horsham attacked incessantly throughout the last ten minutes but the Dartfordians defence held firm. Horsham’s pressure saw the award of a succession of penalties but the deficit meant that they declined kicks at goal as they sought the winning try. Matt McCabe was tackled into touch just short of the line and then the referee’s patience ran out from the repeated infringements when Dartfordians incurred their third yellow card of the match as hooker Sam Cooksley went into the sin bin, but Horsham ran out of time. Stocker summarised after the game: “Both sides gave away few penalties in kickable positions and
they shaded the scrum, especially in the last 30 minutes. I can’t fault the endeavour of our players. We are two evenly matched teams but we just lacked a little composure in try scoring areas. We didn’t get our big runners over the gain line running from depth enough and as a result much of our back play was too lateral. We were also guilty with our tactical kicking of going straight down the throat of their back three.” Horsham’s next fixture is away to Thanet Wanderers on January 23, who are presently having a difficult season. Horsham: W Bell; W Johnson, Watts, Ordidge, Wilde, J Johnson, Mills; Talbot, Grantham-Hill, Brady (Fairs); Harcus (McCabe), Whiting; Smith, Gray, M Tredgett (N Bell).
Southwater’s Will Palmer joins Top sides face crunch Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup match in early March Motor Sport Dave Smith – Sports Editor Southwater’s Will Palmer had a successful year in 2015 that culminated in him becoming BRDC F4 Champion and McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner. Now in 2016 Palmer will graduate to Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 with the ART Junior Team and will also compete in the Northern European Cup series with the French squad in 2016. The Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 season features seven events at a number of Europe’s most well-known circuits including four contemporary Grand Prix tracks in Spa-Francorchamps, Monza, the Red Bull Ring and a showpiece race around the streets of Monaco supporting the F1 Grand Prix in May. The Northern European Championship additionally visits the Hungaroring, Nurburgring and Hockenheim in a seven-event calendar and also includes a home round for Palmer, at Silverstone on May 14/15. forward to racing in Europe next year for the first time, especially in a series as competitive as Formula Renault Eurocup, which has produced many great drivers in the past.”
The second meeting of Division C of the Horsham District Primary Schools Netball League provided another set of excellent matches. Castlewood and St Robert Southwell won both of their matches to preserve their unbeaten records and set everything up for a winner takes all third and final meeting to come in early March. Castlewood will go into this encounter as marginal favourites courtesy of their superior goal difference and another seven goals on their second outing helped towards this, bottom-placed Warnham conceding four of them and William Penn seeping three although they did manage to register one of their own. Robert Southwell were similarly ruthless to the tune of 5-1 against mid-table Greenway but found lower placed Jolesfield a much more awkward obstacle only beating them 1-0. Their comparative lack of goals in comparison to Castlewood means a draw when the

Late Wright strike secures Horsham YMCA a point Photos by Clive Turner
Newhaven `keeper Jake Buss under pressure from YM`s Phil Johnson Saturday January 16 - SCFL Premier Div. Horsham YMCA 2 – 2 Newhaven Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter Substitute Dean Wright’s 88thminute equaliser helped Horsham YMCA twice come from behind to draw 2-2 with fourth-placed Newhaven at Gorings Mead last Saturday. Unlike their opponents, who sat five points above YM prior to kickoff, the hosts had not played competitively for almost three weeks with waterlogged pitches forcing consecutive postponements. Premier Division top goalscorer Lee Robinson opened the scoring for the visitors seven minutes before the
break, only for YM to respond right on the stroke of half time when Luke Donaldson’s misplaced pass hit the outstretched leg of visitors’ defender Ryan Knight and flew into the net. The ever-dangerous Robinson doubled his tally for the afternoon to restore the away side’s advantage nine minutes from the end, but again it took the home side just seven minutes to hit back as substitute Wright slammed home from close range to share the spoils. YM manager Peter Buckland commented: “My heart was in my mouth for the whole ninety minutes if I’m being honest, but I thought that it was a good advert for Sussex football. I don’t think you could separate the teams really. I think a draw was about right. They could have had a penalty and we could have
YM's Dean Wright's scoring his late equaliser
had a penalty. They missed one or two good opportunities and so did we. They are a very strong side in the way they play. They are well coached, they’re well disciplined and it’s one of the hardest systems to try and counter measure. Dean Wright really shouldn’t have been on the pitch (through injury), but we decided when we went 2-1 down to take the gamble and put him on and it was an inspired substitution because he scored. It was a really tough game, but looking at the bigger picture, when all the maths is done, today’s point may prove pretty valuable.” YM Team: Fox, Burgess, Dugdale, Crane, Evans, Hibbert, Gedling, Brown, Johnson, Donaldson (Wright 84), N. Sullivan. Unused subs: Zydonik, Gathern.

This week’s Junior Football round up League leaders Lancing given a scare by Heath Saturday January 16 - SCFL Premier Div Lancing 3 - 2 Broadbridge Heath Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor
Horsham Sparrows Ladies team played against the British Army Junior Football Horsham Sparrows Under 15 – One game that managed to beat the weather was played at Ashurstwood where the Sparrows Under 15 team ran out 3-1 winners. I n difficult conditions Sparrows took a 2 -0l lead into the break courtesy of goals from George V and Harry M. Another from George in the second half secured the points with Ashurstwood getting a consolation goal from the penalty spot. A great team performance was under-
lined by man of the match Benedict C. Horsham Sparrows Women’s Team – The Sparrows ladies travelled to play against the army reserve at the main army ground in Aldershot and it was an extremely entertaining game, played in excellent spirit. The army reserve is a team incorporating players brought together from all over the UK, they were very fit and strong, but the Sparrows ladies battled hard and held their own until the last minute of the
first half. The game changed midway through the second half when Georgina B ran though the home defence and fired in unstoppable shot past their keeper. With Fran playing all over the pitch battling hard, Sparrows had the much better of the early part of the second period with specific mention for Sami and her strong tireless running. On another day, and facing a less capable keeper, Sparrows would have scored 6, but as legs tired the army scored 2 late goals which flattered the army side.
Heath travelled to division leaders Lancing for their first league game of the year and their first ever competitive match on a 3G pitch. Steve Painters side quickly adapted to the artificial surface and started strongly, almost taking the lead in the opening minutes when Tom Lyons pounced on a back pass but was unable to find the net. The Lancers opened the scoring on seven minutes when Ross Adams found space between three Heath defenders to head home a right wing cross. Straight from the restart Lyons found Piers McDermott who powered in a shot from 20 yards which the Lancing keeper did well to tip over the crossbar. Heath didn’t have to wait too long to get the equalizer and it was Lyons who was again involved. The Heath new signing’s shot rebounded off a defended straight to Jake Holmes who hammered the ball into the roof of the net. The game continues to flow from end to end and 15 minutes before the break the Lancers again took the lead in somewhat controversial circumstances. Piers McDermott ap-
peared to be fouled on the half way line but the referee allowed play to continue and Alexander Fair went on to score prompting complaints from the Heath players and dug out. Again Heath came back at Lancing and when Scott Weller got behind the defence he crossed to the far post where Piers McDermott bundled the ball over the line to take the sides in all square at the break. The thrilling first half was not matched in the second period with the standard of play dropping from both teams. Painter was forced into two substitutes through injury, Stuart Chester and McDermott both having to leave the field. Lancing sealed the win and their position at the top of table with a superb goal with eight minutes to go. Substitute Toby House received the ball 20 yards from goal and hit a right foot shot that went in off the inside of the far post giving ‘keeper Michael Chester no chance. Although Heath came away pointless they gave the league leaders a fright and matched them head to head throughout which bodes well for the second half of the season and a push up the table. Heath team: M.Chester, Godfrey, Robinson, Flack, Howard, Waddingham, S.Chester (J,Lyons 50), McDermott (Findlay 70), T.Lyons, Holmes (Sandell 65), Weller.

Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor After this impressive display and result, Horsham look extremely well placed for promotion back to the Ryman League. Although things can go very wrong, as football teams have shown at all levels in the past, this Horsham side look full of talent and confidence and have now in Dom Di Paola a manager who knows how to make them tick. Hornets promotion rivals Eastbourne Town surprisingly lost at home to Chichester City and it could have been even better for Horsham if, despite a great effort, Broadbridge Heath had not narrowly lost at leaders Lancing. Shoreham actually started the better and Gareth Williams needed to be alert to save Michael Belli’s somewhat tame effort and then moments later the same player fired just wide of the Horsham goal. The early pressure from the hosts was answered in
the best way by Horsham when after eight minutes they took the lead. Despite looking a yard offside when he collected a pass, Terry Dodd played in Evan Archibald who slotted the ball past home ‘keeper McLoughlin. Dodd was causing problems and went close on a number of occasions before on 27 minutes the Horsham striker eventually found the net. Darren Boswell played in Kieron Pamment who hit a low ball across the area that Dodd side-footed in from a few yards. The travelling band of Horsham supporters did not have long to wait to cheer the third goal. Barely four minutes had passed when, after some great play from Adam Hunt, Boswell’s perfect control left him clear of the defence to round the ‘keeper and put the ball into the empty net. Shoreham had a rare attack that William’s dealt with at ease while just before the break Boswell could have made it four but his shot had the sting taken out of it by a deflection and McLoughlin gathered the ball. As with the first half Shoreham had a productive first few minutes in the second period and it took a good
save from Williams from a Bobby Webb free kick to maintain the three goal lead. Dodd and Boswell went close for Horsham while efforts from Carlton Murray-Price and Brad Curtis kept Williams on his toes. If the match result was in any doubt then that doubt was completely removed in the sixty fourth minute when, put through one on one, Adam Hunt beat McLoughlin to open his goal scoring account with the Hornets. Twelve minutes later the rout was completed when Harry smith, who had returned to the club a few days before, made it 5-0 from a Jack Rowe-Hurst cross. The last quarter saw no further goals but it was not for the want of trying. Shoreham were unlucky to not get a consolation when Harvey Dunk saw his effort come back off the crossbar and in the dying minutes Evan Archibald somehow managed to lift his effort over the bar with an open goal in front of him. At the final whistle the assured and triumphant Horsham players were applauded off by the happy band of travelling supporters; a situation that last year at about this time was the complete opposite.
